Hip-hop legend Boosie Badazz has found himself at the center of controversy following his announcement of the Caleb Wilson Memorial Scholarship during his sixth annual Boosie Bash Festival at Louisiana HBCU Southern University. The scholarship was intended to honor Caleb Wilson. A Southern University student and band member who tragically died in February in an alleged hazing incident. ?

Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill has threatened legal action against Boosie. Asserting that Wilson’s family was neither informed nor gave consent for the use of Caleb’s name and image in promoting the event. Murrill stated, “Caleb Wilson’s parents have advised me that they have not given consent and know nothing about their son’s name and image being used to promote this event.”

In response, Boosie took to social media to express his frustration and intent to counter the legal threats. He emphasized that his event had been planned and promoted well before Wilson’s untimely death, making it impossible for him to have exploited the tragedy for promotional purposes. Boosie stated, “MY EVENT WAS PROMOTED ON EVENTBRITE SINCE NOV 14. THIS INCIDENT HAPPENED A WEEK BEFORE MY EVENT WAS TO TAKE PLACE?? HOW THE F*CK CAN I CAPITALIZE OFF SOMEONE DEATH FOR A CONCERT. ”THAT AINT ME.”

Boosie further claimed that he had attempted to contact Wilson’s family to offer financial assistance but faced obstacles in establishing contact. He posted, “IVE BEEN TRYIN TO GET YALL 20k SINCE IT WAS BROUGHT TO MY ATTENTION ??T HE UNIVERSITY, NOONE WANTS TO PUT US CONTACT??

Boosie Defends His Impact on the Community

Beyond defending himself against the legal threats, Boosie also highlighted his positive influence on Baton Rouge and the surrounding community. In a passionate response directed at Murrill, he wrote:

“GENERAL LIZ MURRILL U CAN CALL ME TOO. THE REVENUE I BRING TO THE CAPITOL CITY IS UNMATCHED. THE FUN N EXCITEMENT IS UNMATCHED. NO VIOLENCE 6 YEARS IN A ROW AT MY EVENTS. NOT EVEN A FIGHT N A CITY THAT MURDERS EVERY WEEKEND. INSTEAD OF TRYING TO BRING ME DOWN N TAKE FROM ME. MAYBE YALL SHOULD ALLOW ME TO BE PUT N POSITIONS TO MAKE A CHANGE N THE CITY.”

Boosie emphasized that his annual festival, which attracts thousands of attendees. Has remained violence-free for six years—something he sees as a stark contrast to the crime rate in Baton Rouge. His remarks suggest that rather than facing legal challenges. He should be recognized as a force for positive change in the city. Especially for HBCU students and alumni who benefit from the event’s economic and cultural impact.

A Divisive Debate in the HBCU Community

The controversy has sparked a wider discussion on social media, particularly within HBCU circles. While some argue that Boosie’s intentions were honorable. Others believe he should have obtained explicit permission from the Wilson family before using Caleb’s name in connection with the event.

No formal lawsuit has been filed as of the publication of this article, but the situation underscores the importance of communication and consent when honoring individuals posthumously.

Aniya Gourdine never played in a women’s NCAA tournament game until Southern University’s landmark victory over UC San Diego in its first-ever NCAA Tournament victory. A victory that led the No. 16 seed HBCU into battle with No.1 overall seed UCLA in the Spokane 1 region first-round action of the women’s NCAA tournament. Before the Jaguars’ leading scorer stepped on the hardwood inside Pauley Pavilion for the 16 vs 1 matchup, Gourdine received an encouraging message from her former teammate and WNBA’s Chicago Sky star Angel Reese. Gourdine and Reese grew up in Baltimore and played basketball at St. Frances Academy, a private Catholic high school in the city.

“It’s your very first tournament and I’m super excited for you,” Reese said in a March Madness video on social media. “…We literally grew up together, literally were best friends growing up from third grade to high school. We was learning how to play basketball together, to winning championships together, to playing at high school together, to you going to college and I’m super proud of your growth on and off the court.”

While the Bruins defeated the Jaguars 84-46 in the opening round game, Gourdine finished with 10 points, two assists and one rebound. Prior to Southern’s first-round appearance in the tournament, the 5-foot-9 senior guard helped the Jaguars defeat the University of California San Diego 68-56 in the First Four round.

She also helped Southern defeat Alcorn State 64-44 to capture the program’s second Southwestern Athletic Conference tournament crown in three seasons and earned MVP honors in the event.

Like Gourdine, Angel Reese played her final two seasons of college basketball at LSU — roughly 16 miles away from the Baton Rouge, Louisiana-based HBCU — and helped the Tigers win the 2023 women’s NCAA tournament national championship.

Southern finished the season 21-15 overall and 15-3 in conference play.

UPDATE: Boosie responds to HBCU band scholarship controversy

Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill has announced her intention to pursue legal action against hip-hop legend Boosie Badazz for allegedly misusing the name and image of HBCU band member Caleb Wilson. The Southern University student died earlier this year in an alleged hazing incident. Boosie, a Baton Rouge native, had planned to honor Wilson by establishing a scholarship in his name. Funded by proceeds from his annual Boosie Bash music festival.

According to Murrill. Wilson’s parents were unaware of their son’s association with the event and did not consent to the use of his name or image in promotional materials. They have requested the removal of all references to Caleb from the event’s promotions. Murrill emphasized that the family’s understanding was that Boosie intended to contribute to an existing scholarship fund at Southern University. Without linking it to the for-profit event.

Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill speaks to WBRZ

“They have requested that his name, image, and any reference to a scholarship for him be removed from all promotional materials,” Murrill said, as Louisiana First News reported on behalf of Caleb Wilson’s parents. Murrill continued to say that the late Southern University student’s parents did not consent to their son’s likeness being used in “for profit” promotion.

WBRZ spoke with Murrill and reported that the family’s understanding was that Boosie wanted to start a band scholarship fund at the HBCU. Stating that he wanted to put money into starting a scholarship more than a week ago. And the discussion did not include the event.

“All of this apparently came together in a very short order. And I think the promoters saw an opportunity to promote the event on the backs of people who just suffered an unimaginable loss,” Murrill told WBRZ. “It is just disgusting; they owe the family an apology. If they wanted to do this, the first people they should have asked was the family. Nobody has made any effort to put money in the scholarship, Boosie hasn’t even funded any of it.”

Additionally, WBRZ reached out to Boosie’s camp for a response to the statement released by the AG’s Office. WBRZ reported that Boosie’s camp stands by the interview that they gave to the ABC-affiliated television station in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on Friday.

Boosie Bash

Boosie, whose real name is Torence Hatch Jr., announced the Caleb Wilson Memorial Scholarship during the sixth annual Boosie Bash. A three-day rap festival held at Southern University. The event featured artists like GloRilla and DaBaby and was promoted as a fundraiser for the scholarship. In an interview, Boosie stated that he collaborated with Wilson’s father and others to establish the scholarship. Aiming to support future band students at the HBCU.

However, Murrill contends that connecting Wilson’s name to the event without the family’s consent constitutes a “dramatic misrepresentation and misappropriation” to support a for-profit endeavor. She criticized the promoters for exploiting the family’s tragedy for promotional purposes. Stating that Boosie had made no efforts to fund the scholarship. Murrill asserted that legal action is warranted due to the misappropriation of Wilson’s name and image.

Southern University has made history with a landmark victory in the NCAA Tournament, with the HBCU becoming the first SWAC women’s basketball program to win a game on this stage. Their 68-56 triumph over UC San Diego not only secured their first-ever NCAA Tournament victory but also marked the first win for any SWAC women’s basketball team in tournament history.

This historic moment is the culmination of a season filled with perseverance and dominance. Southern, now 21-14 overall, claimed both the SWAC regular season and tournament titles to earn their spot in March Madness.

Their performance against UC San Diego showcased the depth and tenacity of the HBCU squad, led by standout contributions from Aniya Gourdine (17 points, 7 rebounds) and Soniya Reed (24 points, 3 three-pointers).

HBCU, Southern University, NCAA Tournament

From the opening tip, Southern set the tone, jumping out to a 40-20 halftime lead. Their efficiency from beyond the 3-point line (6-of-10 from three) and defensive pressure held UC San Diego to just 34% shooting, proving that HBCU teams belong on the national stage.

This victory isn’t just a win for Southern—it’s a statement for the SWAC and HBCU women’s basketball. It highlights the talent, coaching, and competitiveness of SWAC programs and sets a precedent for future teams looking to make their mark in the NCAA Tournament.

Southern University now advances to face No. 1 seed UCLA on Friday at 9 p.m. ET on ESPN. The challenge is a big one, but after breaking through this historic barrier, the Jaguars have already proven they can defy the odds. HBCU basketball is rising, and Southern University is leading the way.

The Southern University women’s basketball team will take its talents to Los Angeles as the HBCU conference champions head to the West Coast to battle a Big West foe in the University of California San Diego on March 19 in the First Four round of the women’s NCAA tournament.

The NCAA women’s selection committee awarded both the Jaguars and the Tritons a No. 16 seed on Sunday in the Spokane I regional. The winner of the Jaguars-Tritons’ clash will face the tournament’s No. 1 overall seed, UCLA, at 10 p.m. ET on March 21 at Pauley Pavilion, an arena located in the Westwood Village district of Los Angeles.

The HBCU women’s basketball program will make its second women’s NCAA tournament appearance in the last three seasons under head coach Carlos Funchess and the program’s seventh since 2002. Southern (20-14) defeated Alcorn State 64-44 on Saturday in the Southwestern Athletic Conference women’s championship game to punch a ticket to this year’s field of 68.

SU by the numbers

Southern enters Wednesday’s matchup averaging 57.2 points per game while only allowing its opponents 58 points per contest—ranked 40th in the country—due to its stifling pressure on the ball throughout games. According to HerHoopsStats, the Jaguars sit in the top 25 nationally in turnover rate for their opponents (24.4%) while their steal rate (13.6%) ranks 16th in the country.

Aniya Gourdine and Soniyah Reed lead Southern in scoring. However, Funchess’ squad contains a plethora of players who contribute off the bench, a unit that averages 22.2 per game (46th nationally).

Strength in numbers

“We continually put pressure on you with depth,” Funchess said after Southern’s win in the SWAC tournament title game. “I mean, we can go 11 deep every game with quality players. …That’s the difference between us and a lot of other teams.”

Gourdine, who earned MVP of the 2025 SWAC women’s tournament, averages 12.2 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 2.9 assists per contest. The Temple University transfer finished with nine points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals in the Jaguars’ win against the Braves.

Reed, a key contributor off the bench, averages 9.2 points and 2.9 rebounds while shooting 38.7% from beyond the arc, second-best on the team behind Jocelyn Tate. The women’s All-SWAC tournament team selection tallied 11 of the Jaguars’ 28 bench points in the contest.

Like Southern, UC San Diego (20-15) has a stout defense. The Tritons only allow 59.1 points per contest—ranked 57th nationally—and sit 28th nationally in defensive rating (82.5), 23rd in steals per game, and 26th in forcing their opponents to commit turnovers (19.6 per game).

While Sumayah Sugapong leads the team in scoring, assists, and steals (14.9 ppg, 3.5 assists, 2.6 steals), the Tritons have a bevy of other players who provide key contributions to their on-court success. Gracie Gallegos (9.9 ppg) and Sabrina Ma (9.9 ppg) nearly average double digit point totals. Ma also creates havoc defensively, averaging 1.8 steals (third best on the team) while also shooting a team-best 34.3% from three-point range.

Other notable Triton players to watch for include Parker Montgomery, Kayanna Spriggs, and Junae Manhan.

The HBCU women’s basketball team will tip off in the First Four matchup of the NCAA Tournament on Wednesday, March 19, at 9 p.m. EST on ESPNU.

ATLANTA — Aniya Gourdine ran to find her cell phone moments after the scoreboard lit up with triple zeroes as Southern defeated Alcorn State 64-44 to capture the Southwestern Athletic Conference tournament championship on Saturday at Gateway Center Arena.

While Gourdine’s mother watched her celebrate with her teammates after the championship win, the first person Gourdine called was her father, Jerome.

Before Saturday’s contest, Jerome told Gourdine that the Jaguars’ contest against the Braves was the moment — playing for a chance to compete in the women’s NCAA tournament — she had been waiting for her entire life.

“I’ve been dreaming of this [playing in March Madness] since I was a little girl,” Gourdine told HBCU GameDay.

When the All-SWAC women’s tournament selection dialed her father’s number, he answered the phone with a simple message. But for Gourdine, who finished the game with nine points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals in the victory, it was one that was much deeper than winning Saturday’s SWAC title game.

“I am so happy for you,” Gourdine recalled the statement from her dad. “It just meant everything. He was really the one who really worked me out, got me to play [basketball]. …It was only right that I called him [after Jaguars’ win].”

During the regular season, Alcorn defeated Southern 59-55 in overtime on Feb. 1 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Gourdine, who finished with 13 points, six rebounds and two assists in that contest, never forgot the feeling of losing the previous contest. Even more, a year ago, the Braves eliminated the Jaguars 59-52 in the quarterfinals of the 2024 SWAC Tournament.

But according to Gourdine, Southern didn’t view the game as a “rematch.”

“…We just locked in,” Gourdine said. “We didn’t want to take it personal and try to do too much. We treated it [the game] as a regular game and came out on top.

Gourdine, who transferred to Southern last season after two years at Temple, found a home in playing for Jaguars head coach Carlos Funchess. However, the process of Gourdine aiding Southern to win its second SWAC tourney title in the last three seasons and the program’s seventh since 2002 was not easy.

“A lot of people don’t see them [players] spending hours in the weight room in the summer or running suicides or line drills,” Funchess said in the postgame news conference. “Getting up 400 or 500 shots … getting in early in the morning, at 5:30 to get some extra shots in. People don’t see that. …They think you just throw a jersey on and go out and practice a few times and go win a game. …When you start doing this from June 3 until [now], it’s a lot of man hours that’s been put into this.”

With the Jaguars’ win, Gourdine fulfilled one of her goals this season to capture a SWAC tournament title. In the process, she captured her dream of earning a chance to feel the taste of March Madness in women’s basketball. The Baltimore native has never played nor attended a women’s NCAA tournament game.

On Sunday, Gourdine, along with her teammates, will find out which team Southern will face in the women’s NCAA tournament with the last four at-large teams — programs sitting at 65 through 68 — on March 19 and March 20 before the first round of the tournament begins on March 21. Gourdine has waited patiently to play on the national stage. However, the preparation for the bright lights on the hardwood started when she was 8 years old, competing against he two older sisters and her male cousins. She credits them for her toughness on the court

“That’s where the dog and the roughness come from,” Gourdine said.

That grit and determination has served Gourdine well. As of Saturday night, Southern is projected to play in a First Four matchup as the No. 16 seed in Region I Birmingham. If the Jaguars win that game, they will face the projected No. 1 seed South Carolina.

With the SWAC tourney behind her, the Jaguars leading scorer will seek to help Southern continue its trail of magic in March and earn a win in the NCAA tournament.

The HBCU community is mourning the tragic loss of Southern University student Caleb Wilson, a 20-year-old mechanical engineering student and member of the famed Human Jukebox marching band. His passing on February 27, following an unsanctioned off-campus fraternity event, has sparked grief, outrage, and urgent action from both the university and law enforcement officials.

Southern University has taken swift steps to address the circumstances surrounding Wilson’s death. In an official statement, the university reaffirmed its commitment to student safety and accountability. The administration has issued a Cease-and-Desist Order to the Beta Sigma Chapter of Omega Psi Phi fraternity and placed an immediate halt on all membership intake for campus Greek organizations for at least the remainder of the academic year. Additionally, an internal investigation is underway, and those found in violation of the university’s Code of Conduct will face disciplinary action.

Law enforcement is actively pursuing justice for Wilson. Caleb McCray, 23, surrendered to Baton Rouge police on Thursday and has been charged with manslaughter and criminal hazing. Authorities have obtained arrest warrants for at least two other individuals involved in the hazing incident, and police are coordinating with their attorneys for their surrender. Baton Rouge Police Chief TJ Morse emphasized that further arrests remain a possibility as investigations continue.

Caleb Wilson, Southern University

Reports indicate that Caleb Wilson suffered fatal injuries during a hazing ritual at a warehouse several miles away from where fraternity members initially claimed he had collapsed while playing basketball. According to an affidavit, McCray and at least two other Omega Psi Phi members, wearing boxing gloves, struck Wilson and eight other pledges. Wilson was punched four times in the chest, causing him to collapse and become unresponsive. Witnesses say he appeared to suffer a seizure before losing control of his bodily functions. The affidavit also notes that Wilson had visible bruising on his chest.

This heartbreaking incident has reignited conversations about hazing and accountability within HBCU Greek life. While Southern University has expressed its full cooperation with law enforcement, the administration is also urging students, faculty, and staff to utilize the university’s 24/7 mental health services during this difficult time.

In addition to the investigation into Wilson’s death, Southern University remains engaged with authorities regarding an on-campus shooting on March 2. As a precaution, external visitors are no longer allowed in dormitories.

As the HBCU community continues to process this tragedy, Southern University has vowed to provide updates as more information becomes available. Anyone with information regarding the ongoing investigations is encouraged to contact the Southern University Police Department or use the Jags Safe app.

TALLAHASSEE, FL – Southern University edged Florida A&M 73-70 on Monday night at the Al Lawson Center, securing at least a share of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) regular-season title. The Jaguars improved to 19-10 overall and 14-2 in conference play, capping off a season defined by resilience and steady improvement.

Southern built a 10-point halftime lead behind the sharpshooting of Jordan Johnson, who finished with 17 points, knocking down five three-pointers. The Rattlers, however, mounted a furious second-half rally, fueled by Sterling Young’s 20-point effort. The game saw six ties and 11 lead changes, but key buckets from Michael Jacobs and clutch free throws from Cam Amboree in the final seconds sealed the win for the Jaguars.

Southern University, SWAC
Southern University claims at least a share of the 2024-2025 SWAC basketball title.

Southern’s season has been a story of perseverance. The Jaguars navigated a challenging non-conference schedule, taking tough losses to Iowa, Texas A&M, and Nebraska before hitting their stride in SWAC play. They remained undefeated at home (10-0) and put together signature road wins, including a hard-fought victory at Grambling State.

With two games remaining, Southern University looks to lock up the outright SWAC title and build momentum for the conference tournament in Atlanta. A deep tournament run could punch their ticket to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2016.

The Jaguars will now turn their focus to their final regular-season home games against Alabama State and Alabama A&M. If they win out, they’ll secure the No. 1 seed in the SWAC Tournament and cement themselves as the team to beat.

New details are emerging from Baton Rouge, Louisiana in the wake of the death of Caleb Wilson of Southern University while attempting to pledge the Omega Psi Phi chapter at the HBCU.

Wilson was pronounced dead on Feb. 27 after being taken to Baton Rouge General Hospital. He was 20 years-old, and a member of the Southern University Human Jukebox Marching Band.

The story that was initially told to authorities was that Wilson collapsed at a local park before being taken to the hospital. A new report by WAFB’s Chris Nakamoto cites sources that claim he collapsed after being punched in the chest at a warehouse in Baton Rouge. Caleb Wilson, according to the source, was one of nine pledges who were forced to take hits. Wilson reportedly collapsed and had a seizure after being struck.

The source says the Omega Psi Phi fraternity brothers got together after taking Wilson to the hospital and concocted the story of him collapsing in the park as none of the pledging rituals were done in the park.

Caleb Wilson was a member of the Southern University Human Jukebox.

Wilson’s family released a statement following his death.

“On behalf of the Wilson family, we want to express our deepest gratitude to everyone who has offered their love, support, and prayers during this incredibly difficult time. The loss of Caleb has left an unimaginable void in our hearts, but your kindness and compassion have provided some solace.

Caleb was a bright and talented young man with a promising future ahead of him. His passion for life, his dedication to his studies, and his love for music and the Southern University “Human Jukebox” Marching Band were just a few of the many qualities that made him an extraordinary person.

We are committed to seeking the truth about the circumstances surrounding Caleb’s passing and ensuring that no other family has to endure such a tragedy. We appreciate the efforts of the Baton Rouge Police Department, Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office and the Southern University community, in their ongoing investigation and support.”

The Beta Sigma Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Incorporated was founded on the HBCU campus in 1937. The school is set to hold a vigil for him on March 5.

The post HBCU world loses legendary player, coach to cancer appeared first on HBCU Gameday.

]]>
Sean Wallace, a revered figure in the HBCU football community and a former standout for Southern University A&M College, passed away after a courageous battle with Stage IV pancreatic cancer. His sister, Antoinette Wallace, made the announcement via Facebook on Thursday morning.

He was 52 years old.

A native of New Orleans, La., Wallace’s journey through HBCU football was one of excellence, resilience, and inspiration. He made his mark as a dominant defensive force at Southern, leading the Jaguars to the #1 defense in the country during legendary coach Pete Richardson’s first season. His efforts helped Southern capture both the 1993 SWAC Championship and the Black College National Championship, cementing his legacy in HBCU history.

Wallace’s accomplishments on the field were extraordinary. He was a two-time All-SWAC selection, SWAC Defensive Player of the Year, Bayou Classic MVP, two-time Sheridan Black College All-American, Walter Camp All-American, and Kodak All-American. His success earned him a stint with the Arizona Cardinals in the NFL and, in 2011, induction into the Southern University Football Hall of Fame.

He also left an impact on the young men he coached.

Sean Wallace, Southern University, HBCU

Beyond football, Wallace dedicated himself to mentorship, ministry, and business. He spent over a decade coaching high school football in Baton Rouge before returning to his alma mater as a safeties coach, bringing his passion for the game back to the HBCU ranks. Remarkably, he also returned to Southern to complete his degree after more than 25 years, setting an example of perseverance and commitment.

His greatest joys were his family. Wallace was a devoted husband of 28 years to Venio Wallace, a proud father to Tonyatta, Abraham, and Sadijah, and a loving grandfather to Tiana and DJ.

Sean Wallace’s impact on Southern University, HBCU athletics, his community, and his family will be felt for generations. His fire, faith, and leadership will never be forgotten.

The HBCU Legacy Bowl and its adjoining combine give players like Jamarius Brown a chance to show NFL scouts what they have got.

The Southern University defensive back was one of about 50 players who participated in the combine in New Orleans on Monday. For Brown, a chance to display his skills in front of all 32 NFL teams was something he has been looking forward to.

“Sometimes you know you have the talent — you never really had the platform,” Brown said. “To be here is really big.”

Brown, who played safety at the SWAC HBCU, showed off an impressive 35.5 inch vertical leap in front of the NFL scouts.

“I want to prove that I’m able to be on this stage,” Brown told reporters on Monday. “That I have the talent to make it in the NFL and I want to hopefully be a big name that comes out of HBCU football.”

Jamarius Brown — like every other player at the HBCU combine — is also playing for more than just himself. He told reporters he was playing for Southern University assistant coach Sean Wallace, who is battling cancer.

“That’s a great coach. He gives us his all,” Brown said. “ He came out, even whenever he was sick, he still did what he could to be around us and give us some key things that we need to grow and be big in this ball game. I just want to do it for him.”

In a thrilling HBCU showdown at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome, Alabama State shocked the SWAC by snapping Southern University’s ten-game winning streak with a narrow 82-81 victory. The Hornets’ win handed the Jaguars their first conference loss of the season and tightened the SWAC standings as the race toward the postseason intensifies.

From the tip-off, the game was a battle of wills. Southern University, the SWAC’s top team, showcased its usual dominance early, but Alabama State refused to back down. The Hornets held a slim 39-36 lead at halftime, led by Amarr Knox’s electrifying 26-point performance. Southern fought back behind Cam Amboree’s 17 points off the bench, but Alabama State’s resilience proved decisive in the final moments.

Southern University, HBCU

With seconds left, Southern’s late three-pointer cut the deficit to one, but Alabama State held firm at the free-throw line, sealing the win and shaking up the HBCU basketball landscape. Antonio “TJ” Madlock added 18 points and eight rebounds for the Hornets, while CJ Hines chipped in 19 points, including clutch three-pointers that kept Alabama State ahead.

The loss was a rare setback for Southern (10-1 SWAC, 15-9 overall), which remains atop the standings but now faces growing pressure from Bethune-Cookman (8-3), Jackson State (7-3), and a trio of 7-4 teams—Florida A&M, Texas Southern, and Alcorn State. Alabama State (6-5) remains in the mix, now just a game back from the pack.

HBCU basketball fans are in for an exciting finish as the SWAC’s top teams jockey for position down the stretch. With Alabama State proving that even the conference’s best can fall, the battle for SWAC supremacy is far from over.

Czavian “Zae” Teasett, one of the most promising quarterbacks in HBCU football, has announced his transfer from Southern University to Grambling State University. This high-profile move adds fuel to the already intense SWAC rivalry between the two storied programs and positions Grambling for a potential resurgence in the 2025 season with a veteran signal caller.

Teasett, a 6-foot-2, 200-pound redshirt sophomore from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, made a significant impact during the 2024 season with Southern. Known for his dual-threat abilities, Teasett completed 71 of 129 passes for 941 yards, six touchdowns, and two interceptions. On the ground, he added 217 rushing yards and one touchdown on 39 carries. His impressive early-season performances earned him the title of SWAC Player of the Week in Week 2 and an Honorable Mention for the Stats Perform FCS National Freshman Player of the Week in September.

Despite his achievements, Teasett’s time at Southern took a turn late in the season when the coaching staff shifted their focus to freshman quarterback Jalen Woods. Woods led the Jaguars to a 24-14 victory over Grambling in the 51st Annual Bayou Classic, a hallmark event in HBCU and SWAC football. Following this, Teasett entered the NCAA transfer portal in December, seeking a fresh start.

A Rivalry Rekindled in the SWAC

The move to Grambling State not only gives Teasett a chance to showcase his skills in a new environment but also heightens the stakes in the legendary Southern-Grambling rivalry. Southern dominated the SWAC West in 2024 with a 7-1 conference record and emerged as one of the top programs in HBCU football. Grambling, on the other hand, struggled with a 2-6 conference record, underscoring the need for a game-changer like Teasett.

Coach Mickey Joseph at Grambling is rebuilding the Grambling State University program, and Teasett’s arrival could be a cornerstone for their future success. His ability to make plays with both his arm and legs aligns well with the Tigers’ need for a dynamic leader on offense.

HBCU Football Landscape Shifting

Teasett’s transfer highlights the growing competition within HBCU football and the SWAC conference. The transfer portal has become a pivotal tool for programs to bolster their rosters and compete at the highest level of HBCU athletics. For Grambling, landing Teasett signals their intent to return to the top tier of the SWAC.

Looking ahead, the 2025 Bayou Classic is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated games in HBCU football. With Teasett now wearing the black and gold of Grambling, the stage is set for an unforgettable showdown against his former team.

Teasett’s journey is more than a personal comeback—it’s a reminder of the excitement, talent, and passion that define HBCU football and the SWAC. His transfer is poised to make waves in the conference and elevate one of the greatest rivalries in college sports to new heights.

]]>
On Tuesday night, the HBCU Southern University Jaguars head into hostile territory to face the 17th-ranked Ole Miss Rebels, a team boasting a 9-1 record and a dominant +18.5 scoring margin this season. While Southern, standing at 5-4, is a significant underdog—Bet MGM has the spread at Ole Miss -24.5—the Jaguars’ recent history of shocking ranked SEC opponents gives bettors reason to take notice. Just last season, the HBCU stunned then-No. 21 Mississippi State on December 3, 2023, showcasing their potential to thrive in high-pressure games.

Southern’s offense has been its strongest weapon this year, averaging 84.9 points per game, an impressive figure compared to Ole Miss’ 82.7 points per contest. The Jaguars’ shooting efficiency, with a 47.0% field goal percentage, can keep them in games when they find their rhythm. Guards Jordan Johnson (11.3 PPG) and Michael Jacobs (11.1 PPG) lead the scoring effort, with the team hitting an average of 7.9 three-pointers per game at a respectable 34.8% clip.

The problem, however, lies on the other side of the ball. Southern has struggled defensively, allowing 69.8 points per game, and they will need a near-flawless effort to slow Ole Miss’ elite attack. The Rebels’ offense is led by sharpshooter Sean Pedulla, who averages 14.4 points per game while hitting 46.7% from deep. Ole Miss as a team shoots 46.5% from the field and averages nearly 10 made threes per game. If Pedulla and fellow guard Jaylen Murray (13.2 PPG, 44.0% 3PT) get hot early, the Rebels could easily pull away.

HBCU, Southern University

Another challenge for Southern is Ole Miss’ rebounding prowess. The Rebels average 35.5 rebounds per game, while Southern grabs 38.3 boards, fueled by forward DaMariee Jones, who leads the Jaguars with 4.8 rebounds per game. Southern’s ability to capitalize on second-chance opportunities and limit Ole Miss’ offensive rebounds will be key.

Still, bettors should remember that HBCU programs like Southern often thrive in the underdog role. Last season’s upset over Mississippi State happened because of clutch shooting and a scrappy defense. The same formula could allow Southern to stay within the 24.5-point spread or, with a perfect storm, pull off another monumental upset.

While a straight-up win would be seismic, Southern’s offense and confidence make them a sneaky pick to cover the spread—keeping hope alive for another HBCU miracle.

JACKSON, Miss. | The records are thrown out the window when teams reach the first weekend in December with the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) championship and a bid to the 2024 Celebration Bowl on the line. That is what is at stake on Saturday afternoon when SWAC East Division champion Jackson State hosts West Division champion Southern at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium. The HBCU football championship matchup is set to kick off at 1 p.m. on ESPN2.

No. 15/18 Jackson State (10-2, 8-0 SWAC), winners of eight consecutive games, faces Southern (8-4, 7-1 SWAC) for the second time this season, having played on Sept. 14 in Jackson in non-conference action. The Tigers won that game 33-15 by jumping out to a 20-point first-half lead behind a balanced offense although Southern was able to pass for 387 yards in the loss.

The two legendary HBCU football programs met two years ago in the championship game at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium with the Tigers winning their second consecutive conference championship with the victory. The two teams have met three times in the championship game with Southern leading 2-1 in those meetings.

The 2024 Bayou Classic had a bit of everything — including some Boosie and the Southern University Human Jukebox band.

The Baton Rouge native made a halftime appearance with the Human Jukebox on a day when

Southern University claimed its third straight Bayou Classic victory, defeating Grambling State 24-14 at Caesars Superdome on Saturday. The Jaguars, who had already clinched the SWAC West title and a spot in the SWAC Championship Game, showcased their dominance on both sides of the ball.

Southern struck early with CJ Russell’s one-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. They added a second-quarter field goal by Joshua Griffin to extend their lead to make the game 10-7 at halftime.

After Boosie and the Human Jukebox cleared the field, the game was on and things got interesting.

Southern University, Bayou Classic

Grambling State’s Tylon Williams provided a spark with a thrilling 94-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, but Southern responded decisively in the third quarter. Quarterback Jalen Woods connected with Chandler Whitfield for a spectacular 41-yard touchdown pass, shifting the momentum back to Southern.

In the fourth quarter, Grambling narrowed the gap to 17-14 after Keilon Elder’s touchdown run. Southern sealed the victory with a game-clinching 45-yard touchdown run by Kendric Rhymes, who finished with 110 rushing yards and was a key figure in the Jaguars’ offensive success.

Defensively, Southern University dominated the trenches, forcing critical mistakes and limiting Grambling’s offensive output. Vincent Page Jr. led the charge with eight tackles and two tackles for loss, helping stifle Grambling’s attempts to mount a comeback.

With the win, Southern University moved to 8-4 and capped off another successful Bayou Classic and now sets its sights on Jackson, MS, where it will face SWAC East champion Jackson State next Saturday. The SWAC Championship Game will determine who advances to the Celebration Bowl to take on MEAC champion South Carolina State in a battle for HBCU football supremacy.

No word on whether or not Boosie will be accompanying Southern to Jackson.

Southern University clinched the SWAC West Division title with a decisive 31-9 victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Saturday at A.W. Mumford Stadium. This win secures Southern’s spot in the SWAC Championship Game against Jackson State on December 7, with the winner advancing to the Celebration Bowl to represent the SWAC against MEAC champion South Carolina State.

Under the leadership of first-year head coach Terrence Graves, Southern dominated UAPB in front of a crowd of 17,740 fans. The team showcased a balanced offense and a tenacious defense, limiting UAPB to just nine points while generating over 400 yards of total offense. The victory also sets the stage for an electrifying finish to the season as Southern prepares for its annual Bayou Classic rivalry game against Grambling State before heading to the conference title showdown.

This year’s SWAC Championship Game is a rematch of the 2022 battle, where Southern fell to Jackson State. The Jaguars are determined to rewrite the narrative under Graves , an assistant on that squad, and claim their place among HBCU football’s elite. The two teams met earlier this year in Jackson, with JSU coming up with a 33-15 win. This matchup promises high stakes and added drama, with both teams eyeing the coveted Celebration Bowl berth.

Southern University

HBCU football fans can expect an intense clash as Southern University seeks redemption against a formidable Jackson State team. Meanwhile, Southern will also use the Bayou Classic as a platform to fine-tune their game plan and continue building momentum.

For Southern, this season represents a resurgence in HBCU football prominence, with Graves leading the charge. A victory in the SWAC Championship would not only avenge last year’s loss but also solidify Southern’s position as a powerhouse in HBCU athletics. December 7 will undoubtedly mark a pivotal moment for the Jaguars and their devoted fanbase.

Florida A&M (FAMU) bounced back in a big way, securing a 24-6 victory over Southern University at Bragg Memorial Stadium, marking its 22nd consecutive home win. In front of an energized home crowd, FAMU showcased dominance on both offense and defense, controlling the game from start to finish.

The game began with Southern striking first. Kicker Joshua Griffin nailed a 50-yard field goal, putting the visitors on the board early. However, FAMU quickly retaliated with a dynamic punt return from Jamari Gassett, who sprinted 43 yards to the end zone, shifting momentum in the Rattlers’ favor. Gassett’s impact continued into the third quarter when he caught a 53-yard pass from quarterback Daniel Richardson, pushing FAMU’s lead to 14-3.

Southern struggled to keep up offensively, managing only another field goal from Griffin as FAMU’s defense kept the rushing game in check. FAMU’s offense took control in the fourth quarter, with Richardson connecting on a 16-yard touchdown pass to Kelvin Dean. A late 34-yard field goal from Cameron Gillis sealed the victory, widening the lead to a comfortable 24-6.

FAMU

FAMU’s defense was formidable, limiting Southern to just 205 yards, including a mere 83 through the air, while forcing several punts and effectively ending scoring opportunities. Offensively, Richardson completed 25 of 32 passes for 274 yards and two touchdowns, delivering an impressive and efficient performance. The win lifts FAMU’s season record and builds momentum as it aims to capitalize on its undefeated home streak, keeping Bragg Memorial Stadium a fortress.

With this victory, FAMU (4-3, 2-1) continues its historic dominance at home, pushing its streak to an impressive 22 straight wins on its own turf, further fueling aspirations for a strong season finish.

BATON ROUGE, La. – Legendary HBCU football coach Pete Richardson to be inducted into the SWAC Hall of Fame for his time at Southern University.

The Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) has announced its 2024 SWAC Hall of Fame Class which is set to be enshrined on Friday, December 13th, 2024. The enshrinement ceremony is slated to begin at 7:00 p.m. EST at the Omni Hotel in Atlanta, Georgia.

The newest members of the SWAC Hall of Fame were chosen from a list of nominees who were submitted by their respective institutions and selected by the SWAC Hall of Fame Selection Committee.

The 2024 Hall of Fame Honorees include Alcorn State’s Fred McNair, Grambling State’s Hillary Matthew Bossier (Legend), Southern’s Pete Richardson, Arkansas-Pine Bluff’s Earl Goldman (Legend), and Charlie Neal (Contributor).

Upon his arrival in Baton Rouge in 1993, Richardson ushered in the golden era of Southern University Football compiling 134 wins during a 17-year career. He is currently the second winningest coach in Southern football history in wins and winning percentage.

Richardson, affectionately known as “Coach Pete” led Southern football to five Southwestern Athletic Conference titles (1993, 97, 98, 99, and 2003), including a three-peat from 1997-99 (the school’s first consecutive SWAC titles since 1959-60). His teams also claimed four Black college national titles (1993, 1995, 1997 and 2003) in route to birthing one of the greatest fan bases in college athletics, The Jaguar Nation.

Richardson’s teams won four Heritage Bowl titles and went 12-5 in the Bayou Classic. He owns the distinction of being the only coach to go undefeated against Grambling’s iconic coach Eddie Robinson. He was also named the SWAC Coach of the Year five times (1995, 97, 98, 99 and 2003).

His winning percentage of 68.4 percent in 17 seasons (134-62) at the school is second behind only College Football Hall of Fame coach A.W. “Ace’ Mumford’s 70.4 percent (176-60-14). Prior to his arrival, Southern had last won the SWAC in 1966 and 1975.

Mumford Stadium was re-named Pete Richardson Field. The first Southern University home football game of every season is designated the “Pete Richardson Classic,” making him a bonidied HBCU football legend on many levels.

For the second straight year in the SWAC, Texas Southern and Southern came down to overtime and SU prevailed with a field goal to claim an emotional 22-19 HBCU football win Saturday night inside Shell Energy Stadium.

The game belonged to the defenses early on as Texas Southern’s defense struck first as MJ Hinson picked off the SU quarterback in the second quarter and ran in it from 18 yards out to lead 7-0 after Christian Avelar’s PAT.

Late in the second quarter, TSU’s Javius Williams sacked and stripped the SU quarterback, and defensive end Michael Akins pounced on the ball to claim the ball at the SU 28. One play later, Trenton Leary rushed in from 28 yards out to give TSU a 14-0 lead following the PAT entering halftime.

SU had some offensive success to open the second half with two consecutive field goals to trail 14-6. On SU’s third offensive drive, the Tigers were on the verge of getting off the field at their own 39 but TSU was whistled for roughing the kicker which extended the drive. SU would eventually score but missed the two-point conversion as they trailed 14-12 entering the final quarter.

Texas Southern added a 38-yard field goal from Avelar midway in the fourth quarter to move ahead 17-12. Both teams would trade punts after but the TSU defense came up with a potential game-clinching play as Damarcus Thompson forced SU’s Noah Bodden into an intentional grounding and safety in the endzone with 1:26 left.

Ahead 19-12, TSU couldn’t get the game-clinching first down and had to punt but ended up shanking the punt which gave SU possession at the TSU 16 with 18 seconds left. SU scored on the opening play via the pass and converted the PAT to force overtime.

Texas Southern missed a field goal attempt on the opening drive in overtime and SU converted its field goal attempt to claim the SWAC win.

LSU football only needed to look as far as its neighboring HBCU to find a new member of its staff. Rick Jackson, most recently director of football operations/player personnel at Southern University in the SWAC, has joined LSU football as its assistant director of football operations.

Jackson came to Southern from Prairie View A&M where he spent four seasons in the same role for that HBCU program. He has served in that role at Southern since 2022.

He was responsible for the team budget, managing home and away travel, coordinating summer camps and coaching clinics, and serving as the pro scout liaison. He also oversaw the daily operations of the football program.

A Los Angeles native, Jackson played under head coach Rod Broadway at Grambling State. In his first season at Grambling State in 2008, GSU claimed both the Black College National Championship and Southwestern Athletic Conference title. He was named team captain as a senior. As an offensive lineman, he helped pave the way for running back Frank Warren, who became the school’s all-time leading rusher with 3,910 yards.

With his playing career over, Rick Jackson worked as the director of football operations and as a graduate assistant coach at Grambling under head coach Doug Williams. As a graduate assistant, his responsibilities included serving assistant offensive line coach, scouting future opponents or potential recruits, breaking down and evaluating film, and coordinating day-to-day interactions between coaches and players.

After spending nearly two decades in the SWAC, Jackson is now headed to LSU football.

The post HBCU coaching legend explains why he left alma mater appeared first on HBCU Gameday.

]]>
Fred McNair was the head coach at Alcorn State University a year ago – today he’s the tight ends coach at rival HBCU Southern University.

That might sound like a step back – but it doesn’t appear that McNair feels that way. He recently opened up about his transition from his alma mater, and a school he led to two SWAC titles, in an interview with “Locked on HBCU.”

“When you’re at a place so long, a place that you love and you’re a two-time graduate of the university – getting an opportunity to get my BS and my Masters – You tend to love the place that you graduated from. Your alma mater,” McNair said. “But I think, at the same time, your alma mater has to love you too. The things that you’ve done in the past, the winning tradition that we’ve had and the championships that we’ve brought in as a coaching staff. But I think some of the things that I really expected to happen – didn’t happen. Just coming from the leadership, things that wasn’t done right.”

McNair didn’t elaborate on exactly what things weren’t done right. But he said he knew it was time to make a move when it cost him his peace.

Fred McNair
Fred McNair led Alcorn State to back-to-back SWAC titles and four division titles in his first four years as a head coach.

“Sometimes you lose a lot of sleep at night with some of the things you can’t control. When that stuff started happening, and you’re not really happy anymore – it’s time to move on and find your happy place. The biggest thing for me – it was bittersweet but I had to do something for myself to kind of make myself happy and unstressful. I’m at a place now where I can sit back and enjoy myself, being a position coach. And hopefully one day I’ll have the opportunity to be a head coach again.”

It looked like he wouldn’t have to wait long to get that shot. McNair was reportedly the front-runner for the Texas Southern University job opening in December. McNair says he interviewed for the job and hoped to get it, but after several highly publicized board of trustees meetings, Cris Dishman – not McNair – was named as head coach.

The even-keeled McNair has taken the events of the last year in stride.

“I understand the business process of everything,” McNair said of the Texas Southern University job. “As a head coach and as a position coach – things happen. It’s really nothing to cry about. You just have to roll your sleeves up and find other employment.”

That other employment came from the HBCU in Baton Rouge, whom McNair often battled as a player and a coach. He said he always admired the program and its fan-base, even as an opponent.

“Thank God that Southern reached out to me. Coach (Terrence) Graves, and coach Mark Fredrick reached out to me one day and asked about this job here here. So I was head over heels when they called me.”

There’s no telling how long Fred McNair will be in Baton Rouge. While calling Southern his ‘happy place’ he also stated he hopes to be a head coach once again. For now, he’s in the Columbia Blue and Gold and loving it.

The HBCU Odyssey of Quay Davis continues.

The former Jackson State and Texas Southern receiver has committed to Southern University. This comes just months after he committed to defending HBCU champion Florida A&M.

Davis, a four-star recruit from Skyline High School, was highly rated as the 23rd-best wide receiver in the 2021 class by 247Sports’ Composite rating system. His college journey has seen multiple commitments, reflecting a quest for the right fit to fully utilize his potential. His physical attributes, standing at 6’0 and weighing 193 pounds, combined with his on-field skills, make him a solid target for any quarterback.

Quay Davis

Davis began his college career at Jackson State under the legendary Deion Sanders. Despite high expectations, his playing time in the 2022 season was limited, with just six receptions for 33 yards on the SWAC championship team. Seeking more opportunities, Davis transferred to Texas Southern for the 2023 season where he was expected to team up with quarterback Andrew Body. He showcased his abilities, recording 384 receiving yards and one touchdown. This performance caught the eye of Florida A&M University (FAMU), and Davis committed to the Rattlers in 2024.

But Quay Davis is once again headed back to the SWAC West, where he will join a Southern University offense looking to help get back to SWAC championship level under new head coach Terrence Graves.

He values champions on his staff, aiming for success.

The Southern University football program has entered a new era under the leadership of Terrence Graves, a seasoned veteran of the HBCU ranks.

With nearly 35 years of experience as both a player and coach, Graves is no stranger to the landscape of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). His extensive career includes stints at various HBCU institutions, and his commitment to the SWAC (Southwestern Athletic Conference) is unwavering.

Graves’ journey began in the mid-90s when he joined Southern University under the legendary head coach Pete Richardson. Graves played for Richardson at Winston-Salem State University, helping WSSU win back-to-back CIAA titles in 1990 and 1991. After cutting his teeth as an assistant at his alma mater for a season, he joined Richardson’s staff at Southern and helped turn into a multiple-time HBCU champion.

“The SWAC is really home for me. I’ve coached at four institutions, and it’s been a great experience,” Graves told HBCU Gameday at his first-ever SWAC Media Day. “I never thought I’d be in the conference this long, but I’m glad I am.”

Since then he has worked at Mississippi Valley State, Norfolk State and Grambling State before returning as an assistant under Eric Dooley in 2022. He was named interim head coach at Southern following Dooley’s firing late last season and was named the head coach following the season.

As he steps into his new role, Graves is not intimidated by the challenge of adding former head coaches to his inaugural staff. In fact, he sees it as a strategic advantage.

FRED MCNAIR ALCORN STATE SWAC MEDIA DAY, SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY

“Iron sharpens iron,” Graves said. “If you want to be great, surround yourself with great leaders and great people. I don’t coach looking over my shoulder. This is a blessing and an asset to have a coach of Fred McNair’s caliber, along with Willie Totten, who’s also been a head coach.”

McNair and Totten bring a wealth of experience and success to the program, having led teams in the SWAC to numerous victories. Graves’ respect for them is evident.

“Fred and I have known each other for a number of years. We have a great respect for one another. I’ve always admired how he ran his program and how he won. Bringing him on board was a no-brainer.”

Terrence Graves is committed to building a staff that embodies a winning mentality.

“Every coach on our staff has been a champion as a player or a coach,” he emphasized. “When you start building your staff with winners and guys who know what it’s like to win, it gives you an opportunity to be successful.”

The anticipation for the upcoming season is palpable, especially as Graves prepares to lead the Jaguars onto the field in Baton Rouge.

“I haven’t given it much thought, but I know I’m going to be excited and fired up because I’m competitive. I want to win,” he shared.

Southern University, known for its high expectations and storied legacy, is ready to embrace this new chapter under Terrence Graves’ leadership. His dedication to the HBCU community and his vision for the future of the Jaguars promise to bring renewed energy and success to the program.

“The SWAC is home,” Graves said, “and I am eternally grateful for the opportunity to represent Southern University as the head football coach.”

Which school has the biggest brand in all of HBCU football?

The conversation recently came up online – and a debate followed. The question was posed by several accounts on Twitter and discussed on HBCU Overdrive with Doc Holliday.

We decided to ask an unbiased source – ChatGPT– who has the biggest brand in HBCU football. Here’s what we got.

The distinction of having the most prestigious brand in HBCU football is often attributed to Grambling State University. Several factors contribute to this prestigious branding:

 1. Legendary Coach Eddie Robinson: One of the most prominent figures in HBCU football, Eddie Robinson coached at Grambling State for 55 years. His tenure resulted in over 400 victories, making him one of the winningest coaches in college football history. His influence extended beyond the field, mentoring numerous players who went on to professional careers and advocating for the integration of sports.
 2. NFL Talent Pipeline: Grambling State has produced numerous NFL players, including Hall of Famers like Willie Brown, Buck Buchanan, and Charlie Joiner. This pipeline to professional football has significantly bolstered the program’s prestige.
 3. Historic Rivalries and Games: Grambling State’s games, particularly against Southern University in the Bayou Classic, are highly anticipated events that draw significant attention and media coverage. The Bayou Classic is one of the most celebrated events in HBCU sports, showcasing the rich tradition and competitiveness of HBCU football.
 4. Marching Band Excellence: The Grambling State University Tiger Marching Band is renowned for its performances, adding to the school’s football game day experience and overall brand appeal.
 5. Media Presence: Over the years, Grambling State has received substantial media coverage, further cementing its brand in the public consciousness. The team’s success and the legacy of Coach Eddie Robinson have been highlighted in various documentaries and sports features.

While other HBCU programs such as Southern University, Florida A&M University, and Jackson State University also boast rich histories and significant achievements, Grambling State’s combination of historical success, legendary coaching, and impact on professional football helps position it as the HBCU football program with the most prestigious brand.

So how did AI determine the biggest HBCU football brand? Go to Page Two for the answer.

Baton Rouge legend and rap artist Boosie stopped by to check out the home team on Wednesday. The Southern University basketball team posted the visit on social media .

But it was the Southern basketball team who came bearing gifts. The team is shown on the video giving Boosie a classic Southern University warmup jersey.

“I might wear this as one of my outfits to the game,” he said while trying on the top.

While he enjoys fame across the world Boosie is no stranger to the Southern University campus, having performed in the FG Clark Activity Center before. On top of that Boosie is no stranger to the SWAC at large, having performed on several of the campuses throughout his career.

But the gift giving wasn’t done for the day, on social media at least. Boosie posted on Instagram the same day a special moment with his mother Connie.

The rapper surprised his mother, who was wearing a Southern t-shirt at the time, with a brand new Cadillac Escalade that had a bow across the hood. It wasn’t clear exactly when this exchange occurred but it was posted on social media Wednesday along with several other videos that showed Boosie making media appearances, talking to school children and at an Atlanta Hawks game.

 • Jackson State recorded a new season-high eight blocks
 • The game had zero lead changes and one tie

Here's how we got to every coaching position being filled in the conference.

Nearly two months after FAMU ended the SWAC season with a win in the title game in Tallahassee, it ended a long, strange SWAC coaching carousel.

Southern University was the first SWAC school to officially have an opening as it parted ways with Eric Dooley in November after less than two full seasons. It was also the first to make a hire as it made interim head coach and long-time assistant Terrence Graves its new head on Dec. 12.

By the end of the season, it was apparent that Texas Southern would be parting ways with Clarence McKinney after more than half a decade at the helm with zero winning seasons. The separation was announced at the end of the season, but the process of getting a new head coach would be anything but linear. Several coaches were rumored as possible candidates, including then-Benedict College head coach Chennis Berry and former North Carolina Central head coach Jerry Mack.

Grambling State University pulled the plug on Hue Jackson a few days later after just two seasons at the helm. The former NFL head coach was eventually replaced by Mickey Joseph, who once served as interim head coach at Nebraska and had previously served as an assistant at Grambling State as well as LSU.

Fred McNair, SWAC

By the time Celebration Bowl week rolled around, it appeared that Texas Southern had zeroed in on Fred McNair as its next head coach. The long-time Alcorn State mentor had been rumored to have shown interest in outside jobs previously, but it had never gotten this close. All signs pointed to Dec. 15 as the red letter date, as the Texas Southern Board of Regents was set to meet to approve a contract for a head football coach – presumably Fred McNair. But it didn’t happen that day. Or that month.

Alcorn State decided it would not sit idly by with McNair all but saddled up in his cowboy hat and spurs head for Texas. It ended up moving on, naming defensive coordinator Cedric Thomas as its next head coach, meaning there would be AT least four programs with new head coaches in 2024.

Meanwhile, Texas Southern had ANOTHER meeting and came out of it on the other side without a head coach. It looked to have a slam dunk case for the craziest HBCU coaching process of the season – if not all-time.

Then Florida A&M, fresh off its first outright conference title since the George W. Bush Era, told the entire SWAC to hold its proverbial beer

Willie Simmons, FAMU, Celebration Bowl
Willie Simmons led FAMU back to glory before heading to Durham to chase his Power Five dreams.

FAMU gave us a January to remember, and Texas Southern is glad we forgot

Just two weeks after beating Howard in the Celebration Bowl, rumors began to circulate that Willie Simmons was mulling an offer from a Power Five program. Simmons had been known to flirt with P5 jobs before, but this time the was a connection. He was offered the running back coach position by Duke’s Manny Diaz, whom he had previously worked with and whose son had worked under Simmons.

FAMU alumni put up a valiant effort after being called on by AD Tiffani-Dawn Sykes to sweeten the pot for the coaches salary pool, hoping to keep the gang together. But not long after the clock struck 12 on Jan. 1, Simmons proceeded to leave the SWAC and HBCU football on top and pursue his ultimate goal of becoming a Power Five head coach. The FAMU faithful echoed Simmons’ parting sentiments that the next head coach was already on campus and took every chance it could get to voice that opinion.

At that point, the question was which SWAC program would have a head coach first – Texas Southern or Florida A&M?

The answer would be Texas Southern, but only due to an insurgency in the FAMU coaching search.

Sykes and President Larry Robinson had signed off on Fort Valley State head coach Shawn Gibbs by mid-month. News of the impending selection was leaked and all hell broke loose. Weeks after raising money at Sykes’ request after talking with Simmons, the FAMU National Alumni Association conducted overwhelming ‘no confidence votes’ on both Gibbs and Sykes. The following week it was announced that Gibbs would be staying at Fort Valley State.

Finally, while the entire HBCU world was watching the Trouble in Tallahassee, Texas Southern announced a coach. It wasn’t Fred McNair. It wasn’t former NFL All-Pro Andre Johnson. It was – Chris Dishman. The former All-Pro defensive back was hired as a head coach for the first time in his career. It was somewhat of a head-scratcher, but by this point, not many people outside the program had much to offer.

Meanwhile, a near-two hour long meeting between Sykes and the Board of Trustees resulted in the recommendation of a search committee on top of Sykes’ plans for a search firm. The committee was quickly formed and selected five potential candidates for Sykes and Robinson to choose from. The list of candidates was asked to remain confidential – and then leaked to the entire internet by Friday.

Less than a week later – on a Saturday afternoon while most HBCU basketball games were going on – FAMU announced interim head coach James Colzie as its 19th head football coach.

If this SWAC coaching cycle has taught us anything, it is that nothing is official until it’s official. And this has officially been a coaching cycle for the ages.

Nearly 30 years after coming to Southern University to work under Pete Richardson, Terrence Graves is now the head man in Baton Rouge.

Graves has been hired as the head coach at Southern, according to WAFB. He fills the seat vacated by Eric Dooley, who was fired back in December. Graves served as Assistant Head Coach/Special Teams Coordinator/Linebackers Coach under Dooley when the former took over in 2021.

While he is a first-time head coach, Terrence Graves is a veteran coach. He previously served as linebackers and special teams coordinator under Broderick Fobbs at Grambling State, where he coached GSU to a win in the Bayou Classic in 2021. Graves served as assistant head coach and linebackers coach at Mississippi Valley State after spending 15 years and an assistant under Pete Richardson at Southern University.

Southern University, Terrence Graves

Graves played as a true freshman at Wake Forest University before transferring to Winston-Salem State University, where he was a part of two CIAA Conference Championships (1990 and 1991). He was an HBCU Pre-season All-American and a 1st Team All-CIAA Defensive Back in 1992. He finished No. 2 in the conference and No. 5 nationally in interceptions. Graves finished his career with 12 interceptions. Graves is a 1994 graduate of Winston-Salem State University. He earned a degree in Political Science/History and is currently finishing his Master’s Degree in Social Science at Grambling State.

Graves has been a member of the American Football Coaches Association since 1995. He is also a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.

Historically, non-conference basketball games have been a struggle for HBCUs, particularly at the Division I level. Often they are matched with PWIs from the top conferences that often result in lopsided defeats.

But not so much now. It’s a new day and HBCUs are finding wins against some of those big named PWIs. These victories are becoming a trend with success in this season and last season’s matchups.

Norfolk State, VCU

Here are some notable games that HBCU squads have won against PWIs this season.

Women’s Basketball

Grambling State 70, Arizona State 67. DeMaya Young scored a season-high of 23 points to hand Arizona State their first loss of the season in the second annual PAC-12/SWAC Legacy Series.

Jackson State 60, St. John’s 56. Daphne White scored 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds.

Arkansas-Pine Bluff 78, Southern Methodist 76. Zaay Green starred in the game with 23 points, nine assists and eight rebounds.

North Carolina A&T 56, Wake Forest 51. Maleia Bracone posted a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds.

North Carolina A&T 56, Liberty University 47. Chaniya Clark recorded a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds.

Coppin State 61, Pittsburgh 56. Laila Lawrence led the way with a double-double of 16 points and 12 rebounds.

HBCU

Men’s Basketball

Southern 85, UNLV 71. Tai’Reon Joseph exploded with 22 points.

Jackson State 73, Missouri 72. Ken Evans Jr. sealed the victory with scoring 20 points

Southern 60, #21 Mississippi State. Tai’Reon Joseph scored a season high of 27 points to upset Mississippi State and knock them out the AP Top 25 Poll.

Norfolk State 63, VCU 60. Jamarii Thomas scored 17 points to secure the win.

Jackson State HBCU

The trend is growing, but HBCUs experienced these types of victories last year during the inaugural PAC-12/SWAC Legacy series. SWAC men’s basketball teams won three of the matchups in the series. Grambling State defeated Colorado, Texas Southern defeated Arizona State and Prairie View A&M defeated Washington State.

The SWAC women’s basketball teams did not have the same success as they were all defeated in their matchups. Jackson State could have increased the SWAC’s odds of winning one of the matchups in the women’s games but they did not participate in last year’s series.

HBCU
2023 SWAC Basketball Tournament – Wednesday, March 8, 2023 – Bartow Arena – Women’s Quarterfinal #2 – Grambling State vs Jackson State

Jackson State women’s basketball has been a powerhouse program in the SWAC since 2021. They are no stranger to taking down PWIs in their road to postseason tournaments. Before defeating St. John’s last month, last season Jackson State won games over Texas Tech and Louisiana to finish the season 21-10 (17-1) and an invitation to the NIT. In the 2021-2022 season, Jackson State defeated Nicholls State and won the SWAC tournament before losing in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to LSU to finish the season 23-7 (18-0).

HBCU basketball is growing and improving every year. As the matchups against big PWIs continue, it should not be a shock to see HBCU victories continue too.

Mississippi State basketball entered its game with Southern University stinging from a loss to Georgia Tech.

The 60-59 loss at home to a Southern team that entered the game with just one win stings even more.

“We’ve had plenty of time to stew on it and dissect it, learn to grow from it,” Mississippi State head coach Chris Jans said after the game. “I didn’t expect this, certainly. I don’t think anyone in that room would’ve expected this. We thought Tuesday was tough, and it’s going to pale in comparison to this.”

The Jaguars held the 21st ranked team in the nation scoreless during the final four minutes of play.

“We weren’t as aggressive looking back as we probably should’ve been against the press and trying to score and maybe get them out of it. We were almost satisfied to break it, and it’s a tough style to play against. Kudos to Coach (Kevin) Johnson, their staff and their players. They played really hard, and we expected them to play hard. They never gave up, and they stuck around. They found a way to win on the road.”

Now his team will look to pick up the pieces moving forward.

Southern University, Tai'Reon Joseph

This is going to stay with us all year long, and there’s no way around it,” Jans continued. “We’re going to have to figure out how we move forward as a group, and it’s going to be hard. It’s going to be tough, and it’s going to challenge the fabric of our program.”

Southern got a big scoring boost of its own from Tai’Reon Joseph, who scored a game-high 27 points and also came away with the game-winning block.

“Tai’Reon Joseph is a very good player. Not only that, he’s a competitor,” Johnson told the media after the game. “You know a guy where we’re his fourth stop. But I’m a Louisiana guy, I watched him all through high school. He’s always been talented, and I’m just hoping him being at home gives him a chance to have a really good finish for his career. But there’s no question about his talent.”

Johnson is in his first year as head coach at Southern University after taking over for Sean Wood. He got his first win of the season over UNLV in the first week of the season, but nothing has come easy for him and his team.

“I’m so proud of them. We preach to them all the time to stick with it. We go down to Arizona — stick with it. We go down at Illinois — stick with it. Lose in overtime to Western Illinois, don’t hang your head, be ready for the next opportunity. Lose a tough game to Valparaiso. I mean think about these guys, eight road games in a row, those guys never once quit. So, that’s how proud I’m of our players.”

The win moved Southern University up to no. 206 in the NCAA Net Rankings. That puts it highest amongst SWAC schools and third amongst HBCUs behind Howard University (188) and Norfolk State (201).
