As No. 6 seed Ole Miss prepares to face No. 2 seed Michigan State on Friday in the Sweet 16 of the men’s NCAA Tournament, the 6-foot-4 senior guard hopes to help the Rebels continue their Cinderella run in March Madness. Friday’s contest marks Ole Miss’ first Sweet 16 appearance since 2001. In his lone season with the Rebels, Barnes is averaging five points and 3.2 rebounds, shooting 38.4% from the field and nearly 73% from the free-throw line in 20.3 minutes per game off the bench.

In the Rebels’ 91-78 second-round victory over No. 3 Iowa State, Barnes contributed four points, four rebounds, and one assist in 16 minutes off the bench. If Ole Miss can pull off an upset against the Spartans, the Rebels will advance to their first Elite Eight in program history.

Barnes’ HBCU Roots: Texas Southern Success

Before landing at Ole Miss, Barnes made a name for himself at Texas Southern, one of the most competitive HBCU programs in college basketball. A Memphis, Tenn., native, he played two seasons (2021-2023) at TSU, helping the Tigers win back-to-back Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Tournament championships and securing consecutive NCAA Tournament berths.

During his time at Texas Southern, Barnes started in 32 of 50 games, averaging 9.6 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game while shooting 43.7% from the floor. His strong performance at the HBCU level made him a key player for the Tigers, proving he could compete nationally.

A Brief Stop at Sam Houston Before the SEC

After his time at Texas Southern, Barnes transferred to Sam Houston State for the 2023-24 season, where he elevated his game further. He averaged 13.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game, showing his scoring ability against strong competition. His impressive season caught the attention of Ole Miss, leading to his move to the SEC.

Now, as Barnes competes in the NCAA Tournament once again—this time with Ole Miss—he carries the experience and grit he developed as an HBCU basketball player.

Tip-off for Friday’s matchup between Michigan State and Ole Miss is set for 7:09 p.m. ET at State Farm Arena in Atlanta.

Coppin State, the last of the four HBCU women’s basketball teams competing in the postseason tournament, lost to Cleveland State 72-70 in overtime. Angel Jones led the Eagles (19-15) in scoring, finishing with 27 points, followed by Cire Worley and a 10-rebound performance from Laila Lawrence.

While all of the HBCU programs—Alabama A&M, CSU, Howard, and Texas Southern—have been eliminated, three of the four schools won at least one game among the 48 teams competing in the event. Chattanooga defeated AAMU 53-49 in the first round of the WNIT tournament.

Coppin State

CSU defeated Colgate 58-48 on Saturday to advance to the second round. However, the Vikings ended the Eagles’ season on Tuesday with the victory. The Eagles finished the 2024-25 season at 19-15 overall. 

Howard

HU defeated Siena 72-62 behind a strong third-quarter performance from the Bison. Four Howard players notched double-figure point totals in the contest. Zeenia Thomas led the way for HU with 19 points, followed by Saniyah King with 16 points and five assists, while Kaiya Creek and Destiny Howell finished with 11 points, respectively.

However, Charleston defeated Howard 76-56 in the tournament’s second round. Thomas led all Bison scorers with a double-double performance, finishing with 15 points and 10 rebounds in the loss. Howell, HU’s second double-digit scorer, tallied 13 points in the contest. The Bison finished the 2024-25 campaign at 22-12 overall.

Texas Southern

TSU defeated Saint Mary’s 54-50 in the opening of the tournament. Tigers’ Aylasia Fantroy delivered a double-double performance, finishing with 16 points and 10 rebounds as well as four steals and three assists in the victory. Treasure Thompson finished one rebound shy of a double-double, totaling nine to go along with 10 points for TSU.

Louisiana Tech defeated TSU 71-64 on Monday in the second round of the tourney, despite committing 27 turnovers. Four TSU (17-16) players finished in double figures. Fantroy led the way with 16 points, followed by a double-double from Jaida Belton of 12 points and 11 rebounds, Daeja Holmes with 11 points, and Thompson rounding out the team’s double-digit scorers with 10 points.

Houston, TX—In a historic WNIT victory, the Texas Southern Lady Tigers defeated the Gaels of Saint Mary’s by a final score of 54-50 for the first WNIT win for the HBCU and its first postseason victory since 1981.

The Lady Tigers set the tone early with their intense defense, completely shutting down the Gaels’ offense initially. Despite this strong start, Texas Southern trailed 18-21 at halftime. However, they quickly regained momentum at the beginning of the second half. A layup and a successful free throw immediately tied the score, setting the stage for a thrilling second half.

Key Players

Nya Harmon emerged as a key player in the third quarter, showcasing her skills by dominating the boards and scoring crucial points. Her efforts and the Lady Tigers’ immaculate defense forced multiple turnovers from the Gaels, leading to significant scoring opportunities. A highlight of the quarter was a three-pointer from Aylasia Fantroy, followed by two made free throws from Anela Thomas, which stretched the margin to 33-23 in under a minute. By the end of the third quarter, TSU had established a solid 40-30 lead.

In the fourth quarter, the Lady Tigers were determined to seal the victory. They maintained their defensive intensity and continued to score effectively. With just 3 minutes left in the game, they led 51-44. However, the Gaels mounted a fierce comeback, cutting the deficit to just 3 points with 13 seconds remaining. Despite this late surge, the Lady Tigers held their ground and secured the win.

Leading the charge for Texas Southern, Aylasia Fantroy finished with an impressive 16 points, 10 rebounds, and 4 steals. Treasure Thompson made significant contributions with 10 points and 9 rebounds, while Daeja Holmes added 9 points. Jaida Belton and Nya Harmon both added 7 points each. Harmon was named impact player of the game by her teammates for her spark in the third quarter. Their combined efforts were instrumental in the historic first WNIT victory for the HBCU.

Coach Skeete commented, “We got to get this money. We are there; we have to perform. There is no running now. That’s what life is about, that’s what I hope to teach in every element…we got to get this money.”

The WNIT committee awarded Howard (21-11) and TSU (16-15) automatic bids as they were the highest regular-season finishers in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and Southwestern Athletic Conference, respectively, that did not earn a bid into the women’s NCAA tournament or the Women’s Basketball Invitational Tournament (WBIT). CSU (18-14) and AAMU (21-10) received at-large bids in the field of 48 teams competing in the tournament.

Texas Southern

TSU will begin first-round WNIT action on March 20 when the HBCU host Saint Mary out of the West Coast Conference at 7:30 p.m. ET at H&PE Arena. The winner of the Tigers-Gaels clash will play Louisiana Tech in the second round of the tournament. Texas Southern enters the tournament after losing to Alcorn State 65-55 in the semifinals of the 2025 SWAC Tournament.

Howard

HU will battle MAAC opponent Siena (17-13) in the first round of the tournament on March 21 at 7:30 p.m. ET at Burr Gymnasium. The winner of the Bison-Saints contest will go to battle against the College of Charleston in the next round. Howard enters the Women’s National Invitational Tournament tournament field after losing to Norfolk State 68-56 in the 2025 MEAC Tournament championship game.

Alabama A&M

AAMU will go on the road to face SoCon foe Chattanooga (16-14) on March 22 at 2 p.m. ET at McKenzie Arena. The winner of the Bulldogs-Mocs’ contest will face Troy in the second round of the tournament. Alabama A&M enters the tournament after a 56-53 loss to Alcorn State in the quarterfinals of the 2025 SWAC Tournament.

Coppin State

CSU will travel to Hamilton, N.Y., to face Patriot League foe Colgate (23-9) on March 22 at 5 p.m. ET at Cotterell Court. The winner of the Eagles-Raiders’ clash will play Cleveland State in the tournament’s second round. Coppin State enters the tournament field, coming off a 72-33 loss to Norfolk State in the semifinals of the 2025 MEAC Tournament.

HBCU Roots: Texas Southern Standout

Before embarking on his coaching journey, the Houston native was a three-year starter at cornerback at Texas Southern University, an HBCU program in Houston, Texas. As a defensive back, he earned All-Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) honors in both his junior and senior years (2009-2010). As an HBCU football player, Orphey developed the skills and football acumen that would later define his coaching style. His time at TSU instilled in him a passion for the game, as well as an understanding of what it takes to develop talent at the collegiate level. Playing in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC), Orphey faced high-level competition that prepared him for the rigors of coaching.

Coaching Journey: From HBCU Roots to the Power Five

Orphey’s coaching career began soon after his playing days ended, with a trajectory that saw him climb through various college football ranks. His early coaching stops included roles at Texas Southern and other smaller programs before gaining experience at higher-profile schools. Over the years, he developed a reputation as a strong recruiter and defensive strategist.

Before joining Texas, Orphey spent time coaching at Rutgers, where he served as the cornerbacks coach. His defensive units were known for their discipline and physicality, earning him recognition among coaching circles. Prior to Rutgers, he also had stints at Mississippi State, Utah State, and Montana State, working with defensive backs and contributing to several successful defenses.

In 2021, Orphey worked in the SEC on head coach Nick Saban’s staff at Alabama, helping to develop the defensive game plan and assisting with defensive backs. The Crimson Tide won the SEC Championship Game over Georgia, defeated Cincinnati in the Cotton Bowl Classic, and advanced to the CFP National Championship Game.

Impact at Texas

With the Longhorns, Orphey will take charge of the safeties, a critical role in Texas’ defensive scheme. Under Sarkisian, Texas has been striving to build an elite defense, and Orphey’s expertise in secondary play will be vital. His recruiting ties, particularly in Texas and the Southeast, are expected to boost the Longhorns’ ability to attract top-tier defensive backs.

Six home games and a trip to the West Coast highlight the 2025 Texas Southern University HBCU football schedule.

TSU’s six home games mark the most since the 2012 season.

The second year of the Cris Dishman era begins at home on Saturday, Aug. 30 as they’ll host Prairie View A&M in the 40th edition of the Labor Day Classic inside Shell Energy Stadium. One week later on Sept. 6, TSU ventures to the West Coast for a match-up against the University of California of the ACC in Berkeley, Calif. The trip also marks the first time since 2008 that the Houston, TX HBCU will make an appearance in the state of California.

On Sept. 13, Texas Southern University is back inside Shell Energy Stadium for a contest against Lamar as it’ll mark the Cardinals’ first appearance against TSU in Houston since 1980. The Tigers will have a bye weekend on Sept. 20 and hit the road for the second time in the month on Sept. 27 against Mississippi Valley State in Itta Bena, Miss. as they’ll play the Delta Devils for the first time since 2019.

TSU kicks off the month of October at home against Arkansas-Pine Bluff inside Shell Energy Stadium on Oct. 4. They’ll travel to Grambling State on Oct. 11 before returning home to host Virginia University of Lynchburg for the second straight year for its HBCU Homecoming on Oct. 18. TSU has a bye the weekend of Oct. 25 and returns to action at home on Nov. 1 against Alcorn State at Shell Energy Stadium.

TSU will have two consecutive road games for the first time all season starting in mid-November. Alabama State returns to the schedule for the first time since 2022 as TSU will face the Hornets in Montgomery, Ala. on Nov. 8. On Nov. 15, TSU heads to Baton Rouge, La. to face Southern University before wrapping up the 2025 regular season at home against Alabama A&M.

The 2025 TSU Football Spring Game is scheduled for Saturday, April 12 with spring practice scheduled to begin March 17.

“This is a well-balanced schedule which we plan to take full advantage of,” said head coach Cris Dishman. “Having multiple bye weeks at critical points of the season will help us tremendously while also having the opportunity to host six home games is big for our student-athletes and our fans. We open the season and end the season at home as our goal is to put the best product on the field and win a championship.”

The Texas Southern women’s basketball team secured a significant HBCU women’s basketball victory against Jackson State as they set the tone early en route to a 69-54 home win on Thursday night.

Maintaining an undefeated streak in conference play, the win places TSU at the top of the SWAC standings snapping Jackson State’s undefeated conference record. TSU also ended Jackson State’s 35-game SWAC Regular Season winning streak dating back to 2023 and it marked the first win over JSU since 2019 as JSU had a 10-game winning streak.

Head Coach Vernette Skeete emphasized how having HBCU women’s basketball fans in the gym really gave the ladies some extra juice.

“It feels good to win!,” she said. “Obviously, we haven’t been in this space historically since I’ve been here to beat Jackson State, so that’s been a long time coming so it’s great to pull that off for the fans.” 

With the students back on campus for the first time this semester, Texas Southern fed off their energy and started strong, ending the first quarter with a 22-13 lead. The Lady Tigers maintained their momentum in the second quarter and outscored JSU 14-4 over the final six minutes as TSU extended their lead to 41-25.

The third quarter saw continued dominance from Texas Southern, with the team holding a 63-38 lead by the end of the quarter. Jackson State struggled to keep up, despite efforts from their top scorers.

Alaysia Fantroy led the charge with 20 points and six rebounds, while Treasure Thompson contributed nine points and five rebounds.

The Lady Tigers look to stay undefeated in SWAC play as they host Alcorn on Saturday at 3 p.m. inside the H&PE Arena.

IRVING, Texas – The National Football Foundation (NFF) & College Hall of Fame announced today that HBCU Football legend Michael Strahan of Texas Southern University will be a part of the 2025 College Football Hall of Fame Class.

Strahan, the first-ever NFF College Football Hall of Famer from the HBCU, was an unstoppable force and sack machine on the defensive line at Texas Southern, dominating the Southwestern Athletic Conference and leaving an indelible mark on the Tigers’ program. The Houston, Texas, native now becomes the first person ever from Texas Southern to enter the College Football Hall of Fame.

A First Team All-American in 1992, Strahan was the kind of player that kept opposing offensive coordinators up at night. He was more often than not double-teamed by opposing offensive linemen, which his coaches referred to as “Strahan rules.” He recorded a school record 19 sacks while amassing 32 tackles for losses for 142 yards in his senior season, claiming 1992 Division I-AA Defensive Player of the Year and Black College Defensive Player of the Year honors.

As a junior in 1991, Strahan led the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) with 14.5 sacks. His career total of 41.5 sacks remains a Texas Southern record. He was a two-time First-Team All-SWAC pick and was twice named SWAC Player of the Year (1991, 1992).

Selected in the second round (40th overall) pick in the 1993 NFL Draft by the Giants, Strahan played 15 seasons with the Giants, twice leading the NFL in sacks (including setting the record for sacks in a single season with 22.5 in 2001) while earning four First Team and two Second Team All-Pro selections. He was a member of the Super Bowl XLII-winning team, finishing his career with 141.5 sacks.

Inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2014, he has also been inducted into the Black College Football Hall of Fame, the Southwestern Athletic Conference Hall of Fame, Texas Sports Hall of Fame, and the Texas Southern Sports Hall of Fame. His number has been retired at his HBCU, and he received an honorary doctorate of humane letters from his alma mater in 2013. He was named to the Senior Bowl 75th Anniversary Team in 2024. The Giants retired his No. 92, and his name appears in the Giants Ring of Honor.

Deivejon Harris posted a double-double as four Texas Southern Tigers scored in double figures in an 85-74 win over reigning SWAC champion Grambling State in HBCU women’s basketball to begin conference play.

 After a 14-all first-quarter tie, Texas Southern broke the game open in the second quarter as they went on an 11-2 run which spanned nearly four minutes. By the time the dust cleared, TSU was ahead 27-16 but Grambling State managed to cut into the deficit with a 7-1 run to trail 28-23. TSU managed to end the half with momentum as Tiana Mathis’ trey coupled with a GSU turnover gave them a 31-23 lead.
 
Grambling State would get within six after an early jumper to begin the second half but Courtlyn Loudermill outscored the entire Grambling State team over the next six minutes as her 11-point outburst fueled a 25-10 surge which gave TSU a 56-35 lead. TSU would end the quarter ahead comfortably 62-44.
 
The turnover bug would infect TSU early in the fourth quarter as Grambling State used the bug to its advantage early. GSU opened the quarter on a 12-4 run which was fueled by five TSU turnovers as they trailed by 12 at 68-56. TSU would push its lead back to 18 on several occasions from that point but the bug once again would stay with TSU over the next 2:39. Grambling State was perfect from the field and free throw line while generating four steals as they inched closer once again during s 14-2 run to trail 78-72 with 1:52 left.
 
TSU would flip the game after the scare as Aylasia Fantroy scored four points over the next minute while the defense forced several turnovers to secure TSU’s first SWAC opener win since 2020.

 Harris, who started her career at Grambling State, had a solid night with 17 points, 12 rebounds and five assists. Loudermill had 17 points and five rebounds while Fantroy scored 14 with seven rebounds. Treasure Thompson added 11 points with six rebounds.

Texas Southern University (TSU) celebrates an extraordinary gift from Janet and Jeff Share, esteemed supporters of the Houston, Texas HBCU whose dedication continues to elevate TSU’s mission. The Shares have generously donated a condominium to the University. The condominium is located on Houston’s west side roughly two miles away from the Galleria Mall.

The gift follows the family’s March 2024 establishment of a first-of-its-kind $54,000 endowment for KTSU, TSU’s on-campus radio station. The Shares also donated their entire jazz and blues collection to the station as jazz aficionados and longtime KTSU listeners. These acts of generosity underscore their commitment to fostering student success and creating lasting opportunities for growth at TSU.

Formerly Beyonce Knowles, now Beyonce Carter, she is from Houston and offered her services on Christmas Day for the hometown Texans.  She headlined the Super Bowl halftime in 2013 and performed with Coldplay and Bruno Mars in 2016, so she is no stranger to the big stage at NFL games. 

For this show, she reached out to local HBCU Texas Southern University for the services of their marching band “The Ocean of Soul.”

Carter was joined in the performance by Post Malone and Shaboozey.  She also opened with black female country singers Reyna Roberts, Tanner Adell, Brittney Spencer, and Tiera Kennedy. While Carter’s country album “Texas Hold Em” broke airplay records, it was overlooked completely by the CMA’s and Carter struggled to get notoriety for her work.  Billboard, however, recognized Beyonce’s work for the airplay and streams it garnered.

Blue Ivy Carter, Beyoncé’s eldest daughter, joined in as a featured dancer.  The younger Carter was a fan favorite on Beyonce’s last tour.

Dressed in all white, the “Ocen of Soul” was sharp with their moves and fit nicely into the show.  Netflix, who broadcast the game, did not immediately report numbers, but said that millions tuned in beginning with the pregame show.

The show was touted as a very solid performance.  Some have even said it has put pressure on this year’s Super Bowl performer Kendrick Lamar to bring a top notch performance.

Jackson replaced Gary Goff in 2022, who left to be the head coach at McNeese State.  Jackson’s ascension into the position also made him the first black head football coach for a Gulf South Conference football program, traditionally one of the toughest conferences in D2 football. But change could be in the air, now that the Gulf South Conference will lose four of its eight members heading into 2025.

In 2023, his second season at VSU, he led Valdosta State to the Gulf South Conference championship, becoming the first black coach in conference history to win the title.

VSU was the second head coaching opportunity for Jackson. He left the same position at Colorado Mesa University, a Division II school out of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC).  At CMU, Jackson engineered an 8-2 record during the 2021 season, and the Mavericks finished just outside of the playoffs in Super Region 4.  CMU also upset national semifinalist and rival Colorado School of Mines during the regular season. 

Jackson built his career as a defensive coach. He was defensive coordinator at the Division II (University of Sioux Falls) and FCS (Abilene Christian, Texas Southern) level. He was the defensive line coach at TSU when it won the SWAC title in 2010.  That year, TSU led the country in total defense, sacks, and tackles for loss.

Jackson has rare opportunity for non HBCU coaches

Black head coaches at the Division II level rarely get an opportunity to lead a premier program.  The best performances by black head coaches have occurred at HBCU institutions. In contrast, Valdosta State has been a school that has knocked HBCUs out of contention, mainly because of the significant gap in scholarship and money available for coaching resources.

In this year’s playoffs, Valdosta State, the No. 1 overall seed, defeated both HBCU schools that qualified for the postseason.   VSU defeated Miles College in the second round 33-17 before defeating Virginia Union 49-14 in the quarterfinals.

Valdosta State defeated two HBCU schools during the regular season. Albany State fell in a 42-10 game to open the season, while Fayetteville State traveled to VSU and was blanked 34-0.

Only two other black head coaches have coached in the DII National Championship game before. Connell Maynor took Winston-Salem State to the 2012 title game, losing to Valdosta State. Billy Joe took Central State to the championship game in 1983 but lost to North Dakota State.

Jackson played on the defensive line at Texas Southern for two years after transferring from the University of Louisiana-Monroe. He is a 2006 graduate of the University of Houston.

Three players posted career highs as the Houston-based HBCU women’s basketball program at Texas Southern University rolled over College of Biblical Studies 119-27 Tuesday afternoon.
 
Aylasia Fantroy was a one-woman wrecking crew as she scored 19 points in the first quarter as the Tigers shot 59 percent from the field while forcing 13 turnovers. TSU would record a first-quarter shutout for the first time in program history en route to a 44-0 lead.
 
TSU would increase its shutout to 50-0 before CBS would score its first points of the game in the second quarter. However, the Tigers continued to force the issue as they forced eight turnovers while eight players would score over the final 8:04 en route to a 74-13 halftime lead.
 
Nya Harmon’s two free throws helped TSU cross the century mark late in the third quarter as TSU would continue to cruise en route to its first victory of 2024.
 
Fantroy scored a career-high 25 points and grabbed a career-best 13 rebounds while Courtlyn Loudermill tied a career-high with 23 points. Aaliyah Henderson scored a career-best 18 points along with a career-best 10 steals. Deivejon Harris posted a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds for her HBCU in the huge win.

 
TSU will have extended rest as they’ll travel to Baylor on Wednesday, Dec. 4 at 7 p.m.

Jaida Belton 2024-2025 All-SWAC

Texas Southern University women’s basketball junior forward Jaida Belton was named to the 2024 Southwestern Athletic Conference Preseason All-SWAC Second Team as the league held its media day festivities.
 
A native of Baltimore, Md., Belton was TSU’s top rebounder with seven boards per game while also averaging 8.2 points per contest. She has emerged as one of the top shot blockers in HBCU women’s basketball with 48 blocks last season. Belton made national headlines last year after a 24-point, 18-rebound performance against Alabama A&M as she finished the year with five games of 10-plus rebounds.
 
As a team, TSU was picked to finish ninth.

CINCINNATI, Ohio – Xavier University out of the Big East conference went on an 11-0 run midway through the second half to break open a tight contest as HBCU basketball powerhouse Texas Southern dropped its season opener in a tight 78-69 on Monday night.
 
Tied at 10 in the first half, the trio of Kolby Granger, Oumar Koureissi, and Kavion McClain sparked an 8-0 run as Texas Southern opened an 18-10 lead. Xavier cut it to 18-14 but TSU kept the pressure on its Big East foe as they upped the margin back to eight (24-16) at the 9:01 mark. The Musketeers cut the lead to 24-21 but the HBCU hoops squad continued to take their best punch as Granger’s three-point play and Alex Anderson’s trey moved the lead back to 30-21.
 
Xavier did its best to try and chip away but the Tigers held their ground en route to a 38-34 halftime lead.
 
Xavier would take the lead early in the second half as they upped it to 45-40 nearly three minutes in. Down 49-48, Kolby Granger’s three-pointer moved TSU back ahead 51-49 but Xavier tied it at 51. McClain’s trey moved Texas Southern back on top 54-51 as there were two more ties from that point.

Xavier would hit three consecutive baskets while TSU would miss its next three during a 2:19 span as the Musketeers moved ahead 65-55. Texas Southern would get within eight on several occasions down the stretch but couldn’t overcome the deficit as Xavier won for the second time in series history.
 
McClain finished with 21 points off the bench while Granger followed with 15. Kenny Hunter led Texas Southern with six boards. Grayson Carter chipped in with 10 points.
 
Texas Southern is back in action at home on Wednesday against Texas A&M-San Antonio at 6 p.m.

The Department of Athletics at Texas Southern University, (TSU) an HBCU located in Houston, Texas hosted a ribbon cutting for its new Athletic Strength and Conditioning Facility.

The 6,600 square foot facility, which is located behind Alexander Durley Stadium on the Texas Southern campus, features new state-of-the-art weights and weight machines, offices for strength and conditioning staff, and additional space for physical therapy and other services to support student-athletes.

“It gives us the opportunity to compete with anybody,” said Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Dr. Kevin Granger. “One of the things that these new student-athletes are checking out is your facilities. So, when you don’t have top notch facilities, a lot of times they’re not going to come to your school. Now when we have recruits visit our campus, we can bring them into facilities that will match up with anybody’s in the state.”

There are 16 intercollegiate athletics programs at the University. In addition, the Ocean of Soul Marching Band, TSU Cheer team, TSU Sensations, and the mascots fall under Athletics. Until the opening of this new facility, all student-athletes utilized a strength and conditioning space in H&PE Arena that is about half the size of the new facility.

“Having this bigger space, like this bigger weight room provides more motivation,” said TSU baseball player Errick Lewis. “We can definitely get stronger, bigger, faster here. I think it’s just going to be a great environment. The team’s going to love it. It’s going to be great.”

The facility represents a $3.5 million investment into the future success of Texas Southern Athletics.

For the second straight year in the SWAC, Texas Southern and Southern came down to overtime and SU prevailed with a field goal to claim an emotional 22-19 HBCU football win Saturday night inside Shell Energy Stadium.

 
The game belonged to the defenses early on as Texas Southern’s defense struck first as MJ Hinson picked off the SU quarterback in the second quarter and ran in it from 18 yards out to lead 7-0 after Christian Avelar’s PAT.
 
Late in the second quarter, TSU’s Javius Williams sacked and stripped the SU quarterback, and defensive end Michael Akins pounced on the ball to claim the ball at the SU 28. One play later, Trenton Leary rushed in from 28 yards out to give TSU a 14-0 lead following the PAT entering halftime.
 
SU had some offensive success to open the second half with two consecutive field goals to trail 14-6. On SU’s third offensive drive, the Tigers were on the verge of getting off the field at their own 39 but TSU was whistled for roughing the kicker which extended the drive. SU would eventually score but missed the two-point conversion as they trailed 14-12 entering the final quarter.

 
Texas Southern added a 38-yard field goal from Avelar midway in the fourth quarter to move ahead 17-12. Both teams would trade punts after but the TSU defense came up with a potential game-clinching play as Damarcus Thompson forced SU’s Noah Bodden into an intentional grounding and safety in the endzone with 1:26 left.
 
Ahead 19-12, TSU couldn’t get the game-clinching first down and had to punt but ended up shanking the punt which gave SU possession at the TSU 16 with 18 seconds left. SU scored on the opening play via the pass and converted the PAT to force overtime.
 
Texas Southern missed a field goal attempt on the opening drive in overtime and SU converted its field goal attempt to claim the SWAC win.

 
TSU finished with 239 total yards of offense in the HBCU football contest while Jace Wilson passed for 90 yards. Athean Renfro rushed for 49 yards while Leary caught seven passes for 59 yards. Umar Yaro had 11 tackles and a tackle for loss while breaking up a pass.

Joirdon Karl Nicholas had a remarkable college basketball career, marked by perseverance and achievements across multiple programs. He began at the University of Montana, where he played in 30 games as a freshman and helped the team win a Big Sky Conference championship. After transferring to Stephen F. Austin for a season, he finally found his stride at HBCU Texas Southern University (TSU). At TSU, Nicholas became a key player, contributing to multiple SWAC championships and NCAA tournament appearances. His standout moment came when he helped TSU secure a historic win over the Florida Gators, the first SWAC victory over a ranked SEC team.

During his time at TSU, Nicholas earned All-SWAC honors and became known for his consistent double-double performances at the perennial HBCU power. In his senior season, he averaged 10.7 points and 8.9 rebounds per game, helping lead TSU to another SWAC championship. Following his college career, Nicholas played in the NBA G League for the South Bay Lakers and earned a spot on the Los Angeles Lakers’ 2024 Summer League roster, showcasing his talent on a bigger stage.

Now he will look to latch on with the College Park Skyhawks of the G League to see if he can get a call-up.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis men’s basketball head coach Penny Hardaway announced two additions to the team’s staff on Wednesday, with former HBCU head coach Mike Davis and Nolan Smith joining the program as assistant coaches for the 2024-25 season.

Davis comes to Memphis after spending the last six seasons as head coach at Detroit Mercy (2018-24). His coaching resume touts 35-plus years of experience on the sideline, including 24 years of head coaching experience with 14 postseason trips. His squads have recorded at least 20 wins nine times while posting a winning record in 15 of his 24 campaigns.

“I am excited to have coach Davis as part of our program,” said Penny Hardaway “He is a veteran coach and brings a winning mentality to the team with an impressive resume to back it up, both on and off the court.

“Mike has won at the highest level, achieved great success and is a proven leader of young men. He will serve our program in the office, on campus and in the community. We are happy to have Mike and his family in Memphis.”

MIKE DAVIS | ASSISTANT COACH

Mike Davis, who most recently spent six seasons as the bench boss at Detroit Mercy, has compiled a 412-360 overall record with nine NCAA Tournament appearances in 24 seasons as a head coach with stops at Indiana, UAB, Texas Southern and Detroit Mercy. He earned four trips to the Big Dance with Indiana, one with UAB, and four with Texas Southern. Now he joins Penny Hardaway on the staff at Memphis.

Davis is perhaps best known as the successor at Indiana to legendary coach Bobby Knight, leading the Hoosiers to the national championship game and Big Ten regular-season title in 2002.

Davis’ long list of accolades also includes being named Conference USA Coach of the Year in 2011 while at UAB and earning Southwestern Athletic Conference Coach of the Year honors in 2013, 2015 and 2016 while at Texas Southern, an HBCU located in Houston Texas.

He won five regular season titles with UAB (2011) and Texas Southern (2013, 2015-17), and also brought home four SWAC Tournament titles in 2014, 2015, 2017, and 2018.

While at Detroit Mercy, Davis coached his son Antoine Davis for five seasons, who ended up being one of the greatest scorers in college basketball history. The younger Davis wrapped his career as the 2nd-leading all-time scorer in Division I history with 3,664 points, just three shy of LSU’s “Pistol” Pete Maravich (3,667).

In his six seasons at Texas Southern (2012-18), he posted a 115-89 (.564) record, including an 88-20 mark in conference play. His teams won four HBCU regular-season titles and four conference tournament championships advancing to four NCAA Tournaments. In his final season at the helm, the Tigers won their first-ever NCAA Tournament game defeating fellow HBCU North Carolina Central in the First Four.

Under his leadership, five Tigers were named the SWAC Player of the Year, a feat which had never occurred in the league and was the fourth-longest streak in the history of the NCAA. In addition, 11 earned All-League honors, three were tabbed the Defensive Players of the Year, two were selected the Newcomer of the Year and one was picked the Freshmen of the Year.

The win not only marked Dishman’s first as an HBCU head coach but also ended a nine-game losing streak against Prairie View, making it Texas Southern’s first victory over their rival in a decade. In a matchup filled with NFL pedigree, Dishman’s team knocked off the reigning SWAC West Champions, coached by his former Houston Oilers teammate Bubba McDowell.

Dishman’s defensive expertise was on full display, with the Tigers stifling Prairie View’s offense, limiting them to just 21 rushing yards and forcing critical turnovers. Running back Danny Green, Jr. powered Texas Southern’s offense with two rushing touchdowns, while quarterback K.J. Cooper added a key passing touchdown to seal the victory.

This win is a significant milestone for Texas Southern under Dishman’s leadership, signaling a potential shift in the balance of power within the SWAC. The victory over McDowell’s squad, the defending SWAC West division champions, underscores the impact of Dishman’s NFL experience on his team’s performance. Now the the two former All-Pro defensive backs are head coaches at rival HBCU institutions in the Houston area.

Dishman will be making his college head coaching debut for Texas Southern in Saturday night’s game at Prairie View A&M. He was hired to take over the Houston-based HBCU in January. 

“Bubba and I are always going to remain friends, no matter what the outcome of this game is,” Dishman said on Monday’s SWAC football coaches call. “Coach McDowell has been very instrumental in me having this job, so I could never see us not being friends.”

McDowell is headed into his third season as head coach at Prairie View A&M University. 

“We’ve got two brothers who love each other, but this game is not about Cris Dishman or Bubba McDowell; it’s about Texas Southern and Prairie View and the product we need to put out there on the field come Saturday night,” said McDowell, who played safety in the Oilers backfield behind Dishman, who was a cornerback. 

After spending his time as an assistant coach, McDowell has led his program to a 12-11 record in those two seasons, including a SWAC West title in 2024. Dishman will be looking to resurrect a Texas Southern program that hasn’t produced a winning season in over a decade. The two remain close, despite now being on opposite sides of the Texas HBCU football rivalry.

“It’s fun to have him in the SWAC right now. We talk every other week just to stay in contact and catch up with each other,” McDowell said. “If he’s got any questions about how things are run in the SWAC, I’m always willing to share with my brother. I know he’s going to have these guys going, put his stamp on the program and have these guys running free and playing good football pretty soon.”

During his senior season he averaged 10.7 points and 8.9 rebounds per game for a very balanced Tigers team that won the SWAC Championship. The 2023 team finished with a loss to Fairleigh Dickinson in the NCAA Tournament.

His agency posted the news on social media Friday congratulating their client on his success.

Teaming with Bronny

The summer league appearance will offer a huge spotlight for Joirdon Karl Nicholas to showcase his skills to the world. One of his teammates will undoubtedly be Bronny James, the son of Lebron James, and this year’s second round draft pick for the Lakers.

The NBA released the full Las Vegas Summer League schedule and as usual, they gave the Lakers some of the premiere games. The Lakers will face the Houston Rockets on Friday, July 12 with a potential matchup versus this year’s No. 3 overall pick Reed Sheppard.

L.A.’s second game will be on Monday, July 15 against the rival Boston Celtics. To close out the Summer League, the Lakers will take on the Atlanta Hawks and No. 1 overall pick Zaccharie Risacher on Wednesday, July 17 and finally the Cleveland Cavaliers on Thursday, July 18. The Texas Southern University Board of Regents has approved a five-year contract extension through 2029 for Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics Dr. Kevin Granger.

Dr. Granger, who has served as TSU’s Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics since 2018, has been affiliated with the university for 31 years as a student-athlete, coach and administrator.

“I would like to thank our Board of Regents and President Crawford for having the trust and belief in me to guide our athletic department,” said Dr. Granger. “Texas Southern has played a pivotal part in my life and I’m honored to have the opportunity to keep building on the foundation. We are coming off another history-making season both academically and athletically and my goal is to continue elevating TSU to another level as I want to also thank the student-athletes, university faculty and staff and athletic staff for working together as a cohesive unit to ensure TSU remains at the forefront in this era of college athletics.”

Under Dr. Granger’s watch, the department has continued to maintain its high standards academically in the Academic Performance Rate (APR) and Graduation Success Rate (GSR) categories with record scores during his tenure. For the second time in three years, TSU has won the SWAC’s Academic Success Award which is an award decided upon each member institution’s collective ranking in the categories of highest four-year Academic Progress Rate (APR) average, highest single year APR average, and highest Graduate Success Rate (GSR).

On the playing fields, TSU made history this past semester by capturing the 2023-24 Southwestern Athletic Conference C.D. Henry Award, which is presented to the top men’s program in the SWAC. This also marked the second time TSU has been presented with the award since its inception in 1969.

As TSU’s Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics, Granger has had the opportunity to witness success firsthand as the men’s track and field program completed the SWAC trifecta with championships in cross county, indoor and outdoor seasons this past year. The TSU baseball team won its first SWAC Western Division title since 2018 this spring while the men’s basketball program wrapped up its seventh straight season with a postseason tournament appearance. Also under Dr. Granger’s watch, the men’s basketball team has won three consecutive SWAC Basketball Tournament Championships and a pair of NCAA First Four wins along with back-to-back SWAC Women’s Golf Titles in 2022 and 2023. TSU has also won SWAC Championships in men’s golf (2022) and men’s cross country (2019) as both programs participated in the NCAA Regionals.

Several years ago, the famed Texas Southern University Ocean Of Soul Marching Band, TSU Cheerleaders and Dance Team (Tiger Sensations) were placed under the watch of Dr. Granger and the Department of Athletics. Since the transition, all programs have flourished as the band has made several nationally televised appearances across the country while TSU Cheer made history as the first Division I HBCU to win a national title in 2023 while the Tiger Sensations earned a bronze bid to the National Dance Alliance (NDA) College Nationals in 2024.

Dr. Granger has also played a major role in upgrading the athletic department’s facilities as Durley Stadium (new turf) and the H&PE Arena (Jumbotron) has received major enhancements in addition to the new Athletic Strength and Conditioning Facility which is the first on-campus athletic venue to be constructed at TSU since the 1980s. In the spring of 2024, TSU unveiled its state-of-the-art golf simulator room inside the H&PE Arena which allows the TSU golf teams to practice year-round despite weather conditions. Also in the works are new baseball and softball facilities courtesy of the team’s partnership with the Houston Astros.

Promoting Texas Southern University to the local community has been another area Dr. Granger has made strides in as the department hosted its inaugural community fan fest in August of 2023. He has also revamped the department’s fundraising initiatives with the implementation of the AD’s Legends Club in addition to securing and renewing additional corporate partnerships with area businesses.

A Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Hall of Famer, Dr. Granger holds a Bachelor’s degree in Business from Texas Southern (2000) as well as a Master’s degree in Health Education (2014). He received a Doctor of Education (EdD) degree in Curriculum and Instruction from TSU in May of 2022.

Jones won his 100th game at Texas Southern this past February, and captured his 400th overall win in March. In 2024, Jones also served as a co-head coach of Team Ben Wallace in the third annual HBCU All-Star Game in Phoenix, Ariz.

“Coach Jones has done an outstanding job in maintaining and enhancing the tradition of the men’s basketball program at TSU,” said Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics Dr. Kevin Granger. “Since arriving at TSU six years ago, the college basketball landscape has evolved quickly, and Coach Jones has successfully navigated TSU through these changes both on-and-off the court and has us well-positioned to remain as one of the top programs in the SWAC and region.”

Staff changes

Jones will be moving forward into the next season without one of his top assistants. Stacy Hollowell, an assistant who came to TSU having led Loyola University of New Orleans to a championship, has left. Hollowell was named the head coach at the University of New Orleans on Thursday.

Jones was happy to see his now former assistant move back into the head coach’s seat.

“The neighborhood kid across the street who I drove to our basketball camps in the eighties. I have followed his career path with great interest and pride. He has succeeded at every level. His national title at Loyola speaks for itself. Stacy has taken no short cuts to get to his dream job. He is ready for this, and I look forward to watching UNO’s future success,” said Jones.

Listed as 6’7, 201 pounds, Shaqir O’Neal was a  three-star prospect in the Class of 2021 out of Union Grove Senior High School in Georgia. He redshirted the 2021-2022 season and made his college debut against San Francisco in Nov 2022.  He played in 20 games during the 2022-2023 season, averaging 1.4 points per game in just over seven minutes of action per contest. The best game of his young career so far came against North American when he scored 12 points with 7 rebounds and 4 assists in 28 minutes. 

TSU head coach Johnny Jones, who has close ties to Shaq, talked about how much Shaqir had improved heading into this season. 

“One of the new guys that we’re really happy and excited about is Shaqir O’Neal,” Jones said. “I think people that hadn’t had an opportunity to see his offseason workouts – I think he’s done an awesome job in transitioning in the last two years and we’re looking forward to him making an impact with us and for us as well.”

Shaqir averaged 1.8 points and 1.8 rebounds per game in 20 appearances this season. He played a season-high 23 minutes against Creighton and had his best game against Biblical Studies when he scored nine points and hit two three-pointers.

The Texas Southern University Sports Hall of Fame, which was reinstated recently, has announced its first induction class since 1996 with the selection of 24 former student-athletes, coaches and contributors. The star-studded class features a mix of current professional, collegiate and statewide hall of famers in addition to trailblazers in the sports of baseball, bowling, softball, women’s basketball, volleyball and administration.

The Texas Southern University Sports Hall of Fame is an organization founded to promote a program of recognition for great athletes, coaches and supporters of the University Athletic Program. The organization works cooperatively with, and provides leadership for the administration of the University in a realization of basic beliefs and for improving the programs of intercollegiate athletics. The hope of the University is that the honorees will serve to keep alive the memories of the men and women who have brought fame and recognition to the University, City, State and Nation.

The 2024 class will be inducted during Homecoming week in October of 2024.

NORFOLK STATE VS DELAWARE STATE

Norfolk State snapped Delaware State’s two-game win streak on Saturday afternoon, handing it a 65-51 loss at Memorial Hall. The Spartans went into halftime with a 40-22 lead and were able to hold off the Hornets for the final 20 minutes.

Diamond Johnson scored 20 points to lead the way for Norfolk State. Johnson was particularly effective from three-point land, knocking down 4-of-7 attempts. The transition game was a big factor in the Spartans’ success, as 12 of the team’s points came on the fast break. Efficiency metrics evaluated the offense at an average of 1.01 points scored per possession on 51% true shooting.

Savannah Brooks scored 18 points, while Deyonce Thompson added another 13 to lead the way for Delaware State. HOWARD VS MARYLAND EASTERN SHORE

Howard earned an impressive MEAC win on Saturday afternoon, taking down UMES by a score of 64-48. The Bison got out to a 36-31 lead by halftime, and then came out and outscored the Hawks again in the second half to come away with the victory.

Iyanna Warren and Kaiya Creek scored 18 and 17 points, respectively, to lead the way for Howard. The transition game was a big factor in the Bison’s success, as 13 of the team’s points came on the fast break. Efficiency metrics evaluated the offense at an average of 0.93 points scored per possession on 51% true shooting.

Ariana Seawell scored 16 points, while Ja’la Bannerman added another seven to lead the way for UMES. Collectively, the Hawks were inefficient on offense. They converted on just 28% of field goal attempts and 20% of three-point attempts. From the free throw line, UMES went 13-of-18.

NORTH CAROLINA CENTRAL VS COPPIN STATE

North Carolina Central ended its three-game losing skid, defeating Coppin State in a 52-44 contest on Saturday afternoon at Physical Education Complex. The Eagles went into halftime trailing 20-18 but outscored the Eagles by 10 points in the second half to come back and win.

Morgan Callahan scored 19 points to lead the way for North Carolina Central. That performance included an impressive 14 points in the second half to ignite the team down the stretch. North Carolina Central’s offense as a whole came out of the break with new energy. They shot 46% from the field in the second half, scoring 1.04 points per possession. This was a big improvement from their 25% shooting and 0.56 points per possession in the first half.

Angel Jones recorded 13 points and six rebounds, and Mossi Staples contributed another nine points to pace Coppin State. Collectively, the Eagles were inefficient on offense. They converted on just 25% of field goal attempts and 11% of three-point attempts. From the free throw line, Coppin State went 11-of-13.

MORGAN STATE VS SOUTH CAROLINA STATE

Morgan State broke its streak of five consecutive losses, defeating South Carolina State in a 61-29 rout on Saturday afternoon at Hill Field House. The Lady Bears went into halftime with a 61-29 lead and were able to hold off the Lady Bulldogs for the final 20 minutes.

Laila Fair and Nakilah Johnson each scored 12 points to lead the way for Morgan State. As a whole, the Lady Bears were less than impressive on the offensive side of the ball, scoring just 0.94 points per possession on 32% shooting from the field. However, they did maximize their opportunities, turning the ball over just 11 times (12% of possessions).

South Carolina State was led by Jada Morgan, who scored eight points while collecting five boards. As a team, the Lady Bulldogs had some offensive struggles, scoring just 0.45 points per possession on 21% shooting from the field. Even the uncontested attempts were not falling, as the team went a paltry 11-of-19 from the free throw line.

SOUTHERN VS BETHUNE-COOKMAN

Southern defeated Bethune-Cookman in a 65-59 overtime thriller at the F.G. Clark Activity Center on Saturday afternoon. Southern went into halftime with a 27-23 lead, but Bethune-Cookman fought back to tie things up at the end of regulation. The Wildcats could not finish the job though, as they were outscored 15-9 in overtime.

Raven White and Aniya Gourdine led the scoring for Southern, each contributing 11 points. As a whole, the Lady Jaguars were less than impressive on the offensive side of the ball, scoring just 0.76 points per possession on 32% shooting from the field. Their shooting woes were alleviated by a relentless pursuit on the boards. Their 13 offensive rebounds led to 14 big second chance points.

Karianna Woods scored 16 points, while Kayla White added another 14 to lead the way for Bethune-Cookman. As a team, the Wildcats had some offensive struggles, scoring just 0.72 points per possession on 36% shooting from the field. Those numbers include 17-of-45 on two-pointers, 3-of-11 on three-pointers, and 16-of-24 on free throws.

ALABAMA A&M VS ALABAMA STATE

Alabama A&M handed Alabama State its eighth consecutive loss in a 58-47 contest at the Event Center on Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs went into the break leading by two points, and then outscored the Lady Hornets 34-25 over the final 20 minutes to secure the win.

Darian Burgin scored 14 points while grabbing a season-high six boards to lead the way for Alabama A&M. Despite Burgin’s performance, the team collectively struggled shooting the ball. They shot 30% from the field while scoring just 0.83 points per possession. They found an advantage on the fast break though, accumulating 16 points in transition.

Solangelei Akridge scored 15 points, while Cordasia Harris added another 10 to lead the way for Alabama State. Collectively, the Lady Hornets were inefficient on offense. They converted on just 35% of field goal attempts and 32% of three-point attempts. From the free throw line, Alabama State went 7-of-10.

• AAMU’s defense buoyed their offense, scoring 17 points off of 23 Alabama State turnovers
• Alabama State scored below 50 points for the 17th time this season

GRAMBLING STATE VS FLORIDA A&M

Grambling State recorded its seventh straight win, handing Florida A&M a 65-54 loss at the FCH Assembly Center on Saturday afternoon. The Lady Tigers went into the break leading by one point, and then outscored the Lady Rattlers 31-21 over the final 20 minutes to secure the win.

Jazmyne Jackson scored 24 points to lead the way for Grambling State. Jackson was dangerous from three-point land, connecting on 4-of-7 attempts. The Lady Tigers’ offense was able to overcome shooting struggles in this one, accumulating their 65 points on 30% shooting from the field. Their cold shooting did not stop them from attacking, though. They drew 25 fouls on the defense, which ultimately led to 26 points on 81% shooting from the free throw line.

Olivia Delancy recorded 24 points and eight rebounds, and Nashani Gilbert contributed another 10 points to pace Florida A&M. Collectively, the Lady Rattlers were inefficient on offense. They converted on just 25% of field goal attempts and 6% of three-point attempts. From the free throw line, Florida A&M went 19-of-23.

By the end of the season, it was apparent that Texas Southern would be parting ways with Clarence McKinney after more than half a decade at the helm with zero winning seasons. The separation was announced at the end of the season, but the process of getting a new head coach would be anything but linear. Several coaches were rumored as possible candidates, including then-Benedict College head coach Chennis Berry and former North Carolina Central head coach Jerry Mack. 

Grambling State University pulled the plug on Hue Jackson a few days later after just two seasons at the helm. The former NFL head coach was eventually replaced by Mickey Joseph, who once served as interim head coach at Nebraska and had previously served as an assistant at Grambling State as well as LSU. 

By the time Celebration Bowl week rolled around, it appeared that Texas Southern had zeroed in on Fred McNair as its next head coach. The long-time Alcorn State mentor had been rumored to have shown interest in outside jobs previously, but it had never gotten this close. All signs pointed to Dec. 15 as the red letter date, as the Texas Southern Board of Regents was set to meet to approve a contract for a head football coach – presumably Fred McNair. But it didn’t happen that day. Or that month.

Alcorn State decided it would not sit idly by with McNair all but saddled up in his cowboy hat and spurs head for Texas. It ended up moving on, naming defensive coordinator Cedric Thomas as its next head coach, meaning there would be AT least four programs with new head coaches in 2024. 

Meanwhile, Texas Southern had ANOTHER meeting and came out of it on the other side without a head coach. It looked to have a slam dunk case for the craziest HBCU coaching process of the season – if not all-time. 

Then Florida A&M, fresh off its first outright conference title since the George W. Bush Era, told the entire SWAC to hold its proverbial beer

FAMU gave us a January to remember, and Texas Southern is glad we forgot

Just two weeks after beating Howard in the Celebration Bowl, rumors began to circulate that Willie Simmons was mulling an offer from a Power Five program. Simmons had been known to flirt with P5 jobs before, but this time the was a connection. He was offered the running back coach position by Duke’s Manny Diaz, whom he had previously worked with and whose son had worked under Simmons.

FAMU alumni put up a valiant effort after being called on by AD Tiffani-Dawn Sykes to sweeten the pot for the coaches salary pool, hoping to keep the gang together. But not long after the clock struck 12 on Jan. 1, Simmons proceeded to leave the SWAC and HBCU football on top and pursue his ultimate goal of becoming a Power Five head coach. The FAMU faithful echoed Simmons’ parting sentiments that the next head coach was already on campus and took every chance it could get to voice that opinion.

At that point, the question was which SWAC program would have a head coach first – Texas Southern or Florida A&M?

The answer would be Texas Southern, but only due to an insurgency in the FAMU coaching search.

Sykes and President Larry Robinson had signed off on Fort Valley State head coach Shawn Gibbs by mid-month. News of the impending selection was leaked and all hell broke loose. Weeks after raising money at Sykes’ request after talking with Simmons, the FAMU National Alumni Association conducted overwhelming ‘no confidence votes’ on both Gibbs and Sykes. The following week it was announced that Gibbs would be staying at Fort Valley State. 

Finally, while the entire HBCU world was watching the Trouble in Tallahassee, Texas Southern announced a coach. It wasn’t Fred McNair. It wasn’t former NFL All-Pro Andre Johnson. It was – Chris Dishman. The former All-Pro defensive back was hired as a head coach for the first time in his career. It was somewhat of a head-scratcher, but by this point, not many people outside the program had much to offer. 

Meanwhile, a near-two hour long meeting between Sykes and the Board of Trustees resulted in the recommendation of a search committee on top of Sykes’ plans for a search firm. The committee was quickly formed and selected five potential candidates for Sykes and Robinson to choose from. The list of candidates was asked to remain confidential – and then leaked to the entire internet by Friday.

Former Alcorn State University head coach Fred McNair was initially considered a shoo-in for the job back in mid-December. The board met on Dec. 15  in an attempt to approve a contract for a head coach, but could not reach quorum. On Dec. 19, the BOT was set to meet again when, according to HBCU Legends, two members either failed to attend or disagreed with the selection, reportedly holding out in favor of former Houston Texan great Andre Johnson. Another meeting of the BOR was held in late Dec., but that meeting failed to result in the hiring of a new coach. 

Dishman will replace Clarence McKinney, whose contract was not renewed by Texas Southern University following last season. He compiled a 12-35 record since being hired following the 2018 season. He never had a winning season, with a 5-6 record in 2022 as the peak of his time in Houston. In fact, 5-6 is the best record the program has had over the last decade, recording the same record in 2014 prior to his arrival.

Cris Dishman played in the NFL from 1986 to 2000, mostly for the Houston/Tennessee Oilers, where he was a teammate with current Prairie View A&M head coach Bubba McDowell. He has spent the last 20 years coaching, including a stint with the San Diego Chargers – but he has never been a head coach.

NORFOLK STATE VS NORTH CAROLINA CENTRAL — WOMEN

Norfolk State recorded its fifth straight win in dominating fashion, handing North Carolina Central an 81-60 loss at McDougald-McLendon Arena on Monday evening. The Spartans started by building up an eight-point halftime lead and sealed the game by outscoring the Eagles 48-35 over the final 20 minutes.

Da’Brya Clark led the way for Norfolk State, putting up a season-high 18 points. The Spartans’ offense was able to overcome shooting struggles in this one, accumulating 81 points on 37% shooting from the field. The transition game was a bright spot though, as 20 of the team’s points came on the fast break.

Kyla Bryant scored 17 points, while Aniya Finger added another 11 to lead the way for North Carolina Central. As a team, the Eagles had some offensive struggles, scoring just 0.74 points per possession on 34% shooting from the field. They were heavily challenged on field goal attempts in the paint, scoring just 37% of their total points on those shot attempts near the hoop.

Southern recorded its third straight win in dominating fashion, handing Prairie View A&M an 84-56 loss on Monday evening. The Lady Jaguars started fast, accumulated a 15-point lead into the break. They didn’t let up in the second half either, increasing their lead to as large as 34 points.

Genovea Johnson led the way for Southern, putting up 18 points to go along with five boards. The Lady Jaguars made a concerted effort to absorb contact and convert it into points. They drew 20 fouls on the defense, which led to a season-high 21 points on 78% shooting from the charity stripe. Efficiency metrics evaluated the offense at an average of 1.03 points scored per possession on 55% true shooting.

Ryann Payne scored 14 points, while Jada Roberson added another 12 to lead the way for Prairie View A&M. Collectively, the Lady Panthers were inefficient on offense. Alabama A&M handed Mississippi Valley State University its 12th consecutive loss in an 83-67 contest at Harrison HPER Complex on Monday evening. The game was tied at halftime, but the Bulldogs outscored the Devilettes 46-30 over the final 20 minutes to come away with the win.

Victoria Dixon secured their first 20-point scoring game of the season, putting up 21 points to lead Alabama A&M. The Bulldogs made a concerted effort to absorb contact and convert it into points. They drew 23 fouls on the defense, which led to a season-high 22 points on 69% shooting from the charity stripe. Efficiency metrics evaluated the offense at an average of 1.06 points scored per possession on 55% true shooting.

Sh’Diamond McKnight scored 23 points while dishing out five assists to lead the way for Mississippi Valley State University. The Devilettes shot 24-of-54 from the field and 5-of-14 from behind the arc. That netted out to an average of 0.88 points per possession.

Texas Southern ended its 10-game losing skid, defeating Grambling State in a 72-67 contest on Monday evening at the FCH Assembly Center. Texas Southern went into halftime with a 13-point lead. Despite being outscored 41-33 in the second half, they were able to fend off the Grambling State and hold on for the win.

Taniya Lawson, Anela Thomas, and Nya Harmon led the way for Texas Southern, contributing 17, 16, and 13 points, respectively. The Lady Tigers made a concerted effort to absorb contact and convert it into points. They drew 23 fouls on the defense, which led to a season-high 22 points on 79% shooting from the charity stripe. Efficiency metrics evaluated the offense at an average of 0.86 points scored per possession on 56% true shooting.

ALABAMA STATE VS ARKANSAS-PINE BLUFF — MEN

Alabama State recorded its third straight win, handing Arkansas-Pine Bluff an 83-72 loss at H.O. Clemmons Arena on Monday evening. The game was tied at halftime, but the Hornets outscored the Golden Lions 46-35 over the final 20 minutes to come away with the win.

CJ Hines scored 21 points to lead the way for Alabama State. Hines was particularly effective from three-point land, knocking down 4-of-8 attempts. The transition game was a big factor in the Hornets’ success, as 25 of the team’s points came on the fast break. Efficiency metrics evaluated the offense at an average of 1.01 points scored per possession on 53% true shooting.

Kylen Milton recorded 16 points and 11 rebounds to lead the way for Arkansas-Pine Bluff. The Golden Lions shot 24-of-62 (39%) from the field in this one, including 7-of-27 (26%) from the three-point line. That netted out to an average of 0.89 points per possession.

Alabama State’s win is a great start to its season series with the Golden Lions. The Hornets’ next test is a matchup with Jackson State, which also won its last game, at Dunn-Oliver Acadome on Jan. 11. This evening’s defeat was another tough result for Arkansas-Pine Bluff. It had lost in its last outing against Alabama A&M and was looking to rebound. The Golden Lions will travel to Health & Physical Education Arena for their next chance at a win, a Jan. 13 battle with Texas Southern.

ALABAMA A&M VS MISSISSIPPI VALLEY STATE — MEN

Alabama A&M handed Mississippi Valley State University its 15th consecutive loss in a 78-70 contest at Harrison HPER Complex on Monday evening. The Bulldogs’ lead was as large as 19 points in the first half, but they weren’t able to extend it any further. After a rough start, the Delta Devils played a competitive second half.

Dailin Smith was an efficient machine, contributing 17 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field to lead the way for Alabama A&M. Smith was not the sole contributor though. The Bulldogs’ offense delivered from many fronts, pouring in 1.18 points per possession on 50% shooting from the field. Their aggressive play paid off, as they drew 18 fouls on the defense, which led to 18 points on 72% shooting from the charity stripe.

Offense was not the issue for the Delta Devils. They scored their 70 points on 42% shooting from the field. Rayquan Brown led the way, putting up 23 points to go along with five boards. Despite shooting well overall, Mississippi Valley State University dug themselves an early hole. The team went down as much as 19 in the first half, and were ultimately unable to catch back up and push past Alabama A&M.

The new year allows us to evaluate where we are and provides an opportunity to seize the moments that are before us. Although we have faced many challenges throughout our University history, we are now at a crossroads, and every decision will either move the University forward or continue to perpetuate the negative stereotype that is constantly placed upon Texas Southern University.

Since Coach Mckinney’s departure, the Athletic Director, along with our interim president, conducted the necessary steps to interview and select a final candidate to present to the Board of Regents for contract approval. As of today’s date, there have been unexpected obstacles that have prevented a final candidate from being named. I can assuredly say that I, along with my fellow tens of thousands of alumni, are disappointed that we have entered into a new year without a football coach being confirmed. Alumni are strongly encouraging the Texas Southern University Board of Regents to expeditiously vote on our next football coach. We have missed the Division I Football Early Signing Period. We are on the cusp of missing the Division I Football Midyear Junior College Transfer Signing Period, and with the beginning of the Division I Football Regular Signing Period soon approaching on February 7, 2024, TSU not having a football coach is placing the football program at a deficit in recruiting quality student athletes. In addition, we have current football players who have entered the transfer portal due to the uncertainty of the status of the coach.

It is always our goal as the alumni association to work with the University to ensure stability and growth for our University. As stakeholders, we all want what is best for our beloved Texas Southern University and want to ensure every decision made propels us to further greatness. With that said, alumni would like for the University to publish a target date on when we can expect the new football coach to be named in an effort to keep the TSU community informed.

That same day Alcorn State announced that Fred McNair would not be coming back as head coach. 

“The Alcorn State University family deeply appreciates Coach McNair for his exceptional leadership to the University’s student-athletes and his commitment to excellence on the field, in the classroom, and community,” the university said in a statement. “The University is especially appreciative of his unique legacy as a player and a coach in elevating not only the football program but also the University. The University wishes Coach McNair well in his future endeavors.”

McNair’s chair was immediately filled at Alcorn State by defensive coordinator Cedric Thomas. 

Texas Southern University has not had a winning season since 2010 when it claimed a SWAC title that was later vacated.

The TxSU Board of Trustees has called an emergency meeting regarding the position of head football coach. The university is looking to find a replacement for Clarence McKinney, whose contract was not renewed.

Former Alcorn State University head coach Fred McNair emerged from a pool of candidates as the front-runner for the position as Texas Southern looks to pull itself out of the cellar of the SWAC on the gridiron. HBCU Sports reported in mid-December that McNair was expected to hired for the job. A special meeting was set for Friday, Dec. 15 to resolve the issue. But that resolution never came as quorum could not be reached among the board.

Former Houston Texans star Andre Johnson is a name that has been floating around the TxSU head coaching position over the past few weeks. The Pro Football Hall of Fame nominee has never been a head football coach before, but there is reportedly some support for him amongst board members.

TSU was expected to hire former Alcorn State University head coach Fred McNair on Tuesday, but the contract negotiations have slowed. And almost on cue, the Pro Football Hall of Famer and short-lived head coach at Bethune-Cookman University posted a tweet aimed at Texas Southern.

Ed Reed has been in the name of HBCU coaching searches in recent years. He was recently on the Pivot Podcast where he talked about Deion Sanders attempting to get him a leg up on the the Jackson State job when he was departing at the end of the 2022 season. 

“He’s like, I want to give this to you man,” Reed said Sanders told him. “I can’t think of nobody else who love them kids like this.”

Ed Reed said he even sat down with Jackson State University AD Ashley Robinson about the job.

“I was like, I gotta go visit there too. I went to visit BCU, and I’m leaning to BCU because – if it’s about the culture, our culture – why not help the other one get up? That’s why I chose BCU over Jackson State. “Ashley and them (JSU) –  the bells and whistles was there. I was just like let’s build up another brother, sister HBCU while we’re here.”

Reed eventually had his offer rescinded at Bethune-Cookman after controversial comments he made regarding the conditions of the school on social media many times. 

Another former NFL star and Miami Hurricane, Andre Johnson, has already shown interest in the job.

Texas Southern broke its streak of eight consecutive losses in dramatic fashion, needing late heroics to defeat Howard 79-78 on Sunday afternoon at Michelob Ultra Arena. The Tigers trailed by as many as 11 points in the second half but made an improbable comeback to win the game.

PJ Henry scored 26 points to lead the way for Texas Southern. That performance included an impressive 14 points in the second half to ignite the team down the stretch. Texas Southern’s offense as a whole came out of the break with new energy. They shot 61 percent from the field in the second half, scoring 1.43 points per possession. This was a big improvement from their 37 percent shooting and 0.89 points per possession in the first half.

Offense was not the issue for the Bison. They scored their 78 points on 45 percent shooting from the field. Seth Towns led the way, putting up 16 points to go along with six boards. Dom Campbell also contributed, adding another 13 points.

Texas Southern finally put an end to its recent struggles. The Tigers’ next test is a matchup with Samford, which also won its last game, at Health & Physical Education Arena on Dec. 21. This afternoon’s defeat was another tough result for Howard. It had lost in its last outing against Jackson State and was looking to rebound. The Bison will take on UC Santa Barbara, which is coming off a win, at The Thunderdome on Dec. 20.

LAS VEGAS —  When Texas Southern University’s (TSU) Zytarious Mortle stole the ball from North Carolina A&T guard Camian Shell and turned it into a super creative dunk on the other end to give the Tigers an 18-point advantage Saturday night at the Chris Paul HBCU Challenge at Michelob ULTRA Arena, things started looking bleak again for the 0-9 A&T men’s basketball.

But over the final 17 minutes of the game, the bleakness gradually subsided, the creative slams disappeared and the Aggies celebrated in Vegas with their first win of the season, 85-79, over the Tigers. The 18-point come-from-behind win also marked Montè Ross’s first win as A&T’s head coach. TSU dropped to 0-8. 

“I’m just happy for the guys,” said Ross. “They work so hard, and again, it’s going to be an overused term from me, but they were committed to the process of what we’re doing without being emotionally attached to the results, and it showed. I told them it showed heart to get back in the game; now let’s show the smarts to finish this thing off.” 

Sophomore Landon Glasper led the way with 31 points, seven assists and three steals, marking the second time he has exceeded 30 points in a single game this season. He went 9-for-16 from the floor, made three 3-pointers and was 10-for-13 from the free throw line. 

“Landon was really selective about the shots he took tonight,” said Ross. “One of the biggest differences in his game tonight is that he pulled up from 30 (feet) tonight like he normally does, but it went in, and it really got him going to where they started to really press up on him, and he was able to get some drives to the basket because of it.”

After Mortle’s dunk, Glasper’s 3-pointer got the Aggies headed in the right direction, cutting the Tigers’ lead to 56-41. Glasper cut TSU’s lead to single figures, 69-61, on a pull-up jumper with 10:09 remaining. Four minutes later, Glasper’s three cut A&T’s deficit to 76-71. 

Freshman Jalal McKie got the Aggies to within three before the final media timeout by following his miss. After the media timeout, Glasper hit two free throws before he turned a Shell steal into a 3-pointer that gave the Aggies a 78-76 lead with 2:40 remaining. It marked the Aggies first lead of the game. 

After two Grayson Carter free throws ended A&T’s 11-0 run and tied the game at 78. Shell, who had to sit and gather himself after some second-half turnovers, returned with a vengeance as he drove to the basket and scored on a huge bucket to give the Aggies an 80-78 lead with 1:55 to play. Ninety seconds later, freshman Nikolaos Chitikoudis followed his miss with a not-so-much creative dunk but a massive one to seal the game for the Aggies.  

A benefit for the Aggies on Saturday was the A&T debut of 6-foot-9 center Jason Murphy. After waiting out his appeal from the NCAA, the Frostburg State and NJIT transfer played his first game in an Aggies uniform. The Aggies, who have lacked size all season with the absence of Murphy and injured 6-9 center Will Felton, were even in rebounding (34-34) and points in the paint (28-28) on Saturday. Murphy finished with nine points and eight rebounds. 

“He was tremendous,” said Ross. “I was nervous about the jitters he may have because it was his first game back. I told him, ‘Just do what you do in practice.’ And that’s the biggest compliment I can pay him. He practices at a high level every day, so I knew the game speed would not be a problem because that’s how he practices. The bigger concerns were his wind and his stamina. But he handled himself and the situation well.”

Murphy thanked his coaches, his teammates and his family for being uplifting while he waited to play. Murphy also said his presence adds depth to the Aggies lineup going forward. 

“I think we get a little bit more aligned to our true positions, and it gives J-Rob (Jeremy Robinson) and Niko (Chitikoudis) more versatility to play on the perimeter and not the five (center) when I’m in the game,” said Murphy. 

Chitikoudis’s putback dunk was his only two points of the game, but he did add nine rebounds. Three other Aggies joined Glasper in double figures as Shell finished with 13 points. Robinson connected on all four field goal attempts, including two 3-pointers to finish with 10, and McKie came off the bench to score 10. 

Carter led the Tigers with 19 points. North Carolina A&T will close out the Chris Paul HBCU Challenge against Jackson State on Sunday at 8:30 p.m. Eastern Standard Time at Michelob ULTRA Arena.

Howard, Jackson State, North Carolina A&T and Texas Southern will be competing at Michelob ULTRA Arena at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas. 

The Chris Paul HBCU Challenge follows the HBCU Tip-off to make up the HBCU basketball showcases presented by the Chris Paul Foundation and the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. Both showcases give HBCU basketball programs exposure in front of a national audience. The experience is great for the players and the coaches recognize the importance of the opportunity.

Let’s take a look at the matchups.

North Carolina A&T vs Texas Southern

North Carolina A&T and Texas Southern both return for the second straight year. Last year both teams left Las Vegas with one win and one loss. Texas Southern suffered a heartbreaking 67-66 loss in overtime to North Carolina A&T but rebounded the next day with an 82-77 win over Hampton. After defeating Texas Southern, North Carolina A&T lost 70-66 to 2023 MEAC runner-up Norfolk State, who was undefeated in the first two years of the HBCU Challenge.

North Carolina A&T is coming into this year’s challenge without a win this season. The Aggies are now on a nine-game losing streak after a 67-62 loss to North Carolina Central. The Aggies will depend on Landon Glasper, who averages 18.1 points per game. Right beside him, Camian Shell will be a factor in their matchup as he averages 8.9 points and 6.6 assists per game. Recently, Shell had seven points, four rebounds, five assists, and three steals in their loss to NCCU. Shell also recorded a double-double of ten points and 11 assists in their loss to High Point. Defending should be the focus for North Carolina A&T as their have allowed an average of 87.3 points per game against their opponents

Texas Southern, like North Carolina A&T, enters the challenge winless on the season. The 2023 SWAC champion has started the year off 0-7, but they are looking to turn things around this weekend. The Tigers are well rested as this will be their first game in over two weeks. The Tiger’s leading scorer, PJ Henry, scored ten points in their last game against Purdue but scored 27 points in the previous game versus Drake. Although Henry struggled against Perdue, Zytarious Mortle picked up the slack with 25 points off the bench. The Tigers come in with season averages of 3.1 blocks per game and 5.7 steals per game. The offense will need to step up as the Tigers only average 55.9 points per game. Texas Southern averages 36.1 rebounds per game compared to North Carolina A&T’s 28.3 rebounds per game. Texas Southern’s key to victory will be to take advantage of the rebounding convert to second-chance points.

Howard vs Jackson State

Howard and Jackson State will make their HBCU Challenge debut this year. Jackson State enters the weekend 2-7 on year. Their last game ended in a loss to #4-ranked Houston. Ken Evans Jr. averages 18.8 pointers per game and is expected to bounce back after scoring six points against Houston. Evans has scored 20 points or more in five of nine games this season including two 30-point games. If he can get into a rhythm, he can be the difference-maker against Howard. The Tigers steal the ball from their opponents on average 6.9 times per game. Keiveon Hunt has 14 steals on the season. Howard has not had a problem scoring, so Hunt and Jackson State will have to put on an all-around defensive effort to get the win.

Coming off an 88-49 blowout win over Regent, Howard arrives with a record of 4-6 . The 2023 MEAC champion will be led by Seth Towns, Bryce Harris, and Marcus Dockery. The three all average double figures in scoring with Towns averaging 17 points per game. Towns has scored more than 25 points twice and shot 44% from three. Howard averages 37.2 rebounds per game including an average of 27 defensive rebounds per game in their last five games. The Bison have always been a second-half team this season as they average 40.4 second-half points per game. Continuing to score 77.5 points per game and rebounding are the keys to a Bison victory.

The Chris Paul HBCU Challenge will tip-off on Saturday, December 16th, 8:30 PM ET with Texas Southern and North Carolina A&T. Jackson State and Howard will follow at 11:00 PM ET. Sunday’s games will begin at 6:00 PM ET with Texas Southern and Howard. Jackson State and North Carolina A&T will be the last game of the HBCU Challenge at 8:30 PM ET. All games will air on ESPN+.

• Texas Southern runs a deliberate, slow-paced offense. The team averages just 68.3 possessions per 40 minutes, which ranks as the second-slowest in the SWAC. The Tigers score approximately 0.81 points per possession in their methodical offensive approach.

It would be a huge loss for Alcorn State. McNair came to the program in the late 1980s as a star wide reciever-turned-quarterback with the nickname “Air McNair.” His younger brother, Steve McNair, famously took on the mantle a few years later, writing a legendary college career of his own before being drafted by the Houston Oilers.

Fred McNair served as quarterbacks coach for three seasons under Jay Hopson before taking over the head coaching position before the 2016 season. He led Alcorn State to SWAC East titles in each of his first four seasons, and SWAC titles in 2018 and 2019. 

McNair’s career mark stands at 48-33, with a 37-13 mark in SWAC play. Texas Southern has not had a winning season in over a decade.

But not so much now. It’s a new day and HBCUs are finding wins against some of those big named PWIs. These victories are becoming a trend with success in this season and last season’s matchups.

Here are some notable games that HBCU squads have won against PWIs this season.

Women’s Basketball

Grambling State 70, Arizona State 67. DeMaya Young scored a season-high of 23 points to hand Arizona State their first loss of the season in the second annual PAC-12/SWAC Legacy Series.

Jackson State 60, St. John’s 56. Daphne White scored 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds.

Arkansas-Pine Bluff 78, Southern Methodist 76. Zaay Green starred in the game with 23 points, nine assists and eight rebounds.

North Carolina A&T 56, Wake Forest 51. Maleia Bracone posted a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds. 

North Carolina A&T 56, Liberty University 47. Chaniya Clark recorded a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds.

Coppin State 61, Pittsburgh 56. Laila Lawrence led the way with a double-double of 16 points and 12 rebounds.

Men’s Basketball

Southern 85, UNLV 71. Tai’Reon Joseph exploded with 22 points.

Jackson State 73, Missouri 72. Ken Evans Jr. sealed the victory with scoring 20 points

Southern 60, #21 Mississippi State. Tai’Reon Joseph scored a season high of 27 points to upset Mississippi State and knock them out the AP Top 25 Poll.

Norfolk State 63, VCU 60. Jamarii Thomas scored 17 points to secure the win.

The trend is growing, but HBCUs experienced these types of victories last year during the inaugural PAC-12/SWAC Legacy series. SWAC men’s basketball teams won three of the matchups in the series. Grambling State defeated Colorado, Texas Southern defeated Arizona State and Prairie View A&M defeated Washington State.

The SWAC women’s basketball teams did not have the same success as they were all defeated in their matchups. Jackson State could have increased the SWAC’s odds of winning one of the matchups in the women’s games but they did not participate in last year’s series.

Jackson State women’s basketball has been a powerhouse program in the SWAC since 2021. They are no stranger to taking down PWIs in their road to postseason tournaments. Before defeating St. John’s last month, last season Jackson State won games over Texas Tech and Louisiana to finish the season 21-10 (17-1) and an invitation to the NIT. In the 2021-2022 season, Jackson State defeated Nicholls State and won the SWAC tournament before losing in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to LSU to finish the season 23-7 (18-0).

HBCU basketball is growing and improving every year. As the matchups against big PWIs continue, it should not be a shock to see HBCU victories continue too.

Andrew Body started the first game of his junior season in September against Prairie View, but did not play after that. He went 18-for-38 with three interceptions and three touchdowns in the season-opening loss.  He eventually made the decision to sit out the rest of the 2023 season.

The Corpus Christi, TX native burst on to the scene as a freshman when he finished the 2021 season as the Texas Southern University single-season record holder in total offense with 265.9 yards per game while finishing second in the SWAC and fourth-all time in single-season passing at TSU with 2,017 passing yards. He threw for better than 1,600 yards and 11 touchdowns while rushing for 554 more and four scores during the 2022 season.
