A tiny HBCU that always seems to end up as a big topic of debate during football season is in big trouble.

Virginia University of Lynchburg, an HBCU located in Lynchburg, VA was placed on probation by the Transnational Association of Christian Colleges and Schools (TRACS) late last month.

The probation status stems from VUL’s significant non-compliance with TRACS Standards 11.2 (Financial Operations) and 17.12 (Title IV Participation), which question the institution’s ability to fulfill its mission and provide a quality educational experience. To address these issues, VUL is required to submit its June 30, 2023, audit and provide a plan for operating under restricted cash flow conditions, documenting available reserves.

Additionally, VUL must submit regular progress reports to TRACS, detailing their efforts to comply with the specified standards. An updated Compliance Report, addressing the deficiencies and any other required information, must be submitted by September 1, 2024, for review at the October meeting.

TRACS has outlined several possible outcomes depending on VUL’s progress: removing the probation if compliance is achieved, continuing probation, extending probation (with a strict six-month limit), imposing a more severe sanction (Show Cause), a less severe sanction (Warning), or taking adverse action. The next steps for VUL are crucial as it works to rectify its non-compliance and ensure it meets the accreditation standards to maintain its accredited status.

VUL football is a member of the NCCAA – the National Christian College Athletic Association – but it often plays against FCS level opponents – HBCU and otherwise. It is currently scheduled to play Texas Southern, Morgan State and North Carolina Central at the Division I level as well as Livingstone College at the D2 level.

HBCU homecoming season has ended and alumni and students packed their stadiums to support their schools. Tuskegee, Jackson State, Alabama A&M, Norfolk State and Florida A&M lead all HBCUs in homecoming football game attendance, but many schools experienced great turnouts.

Jackson State leads the SWAC with nearly 30k. That’s an impressive number, but it is a significant drop from its 2022 number. Norfolk State got a slight bump as it led the MEAC. North Carolina A&T got another sellout it’s first season in the CAA.

Here are the numbers of attendance at each HBCU homecoming game. All numbers were taken from official box scores from each school’s athletic website.

South Carolina State had an impressive start to the game against Virginia-Lynchburg on Saturday afternoon, scoring a quick 21 first quarter points. They kept that momentum going, ultimately winning 36-0.

Rakim White led the South Carolina State attack through the air with 110 receiving yards and two touchdown catches. SC State put an emphasis on valuing the ball, as they did not commit any turnovers all game. On top of that, South Carolina State’s secondary locked in. They held Virginia-Lynchburg to just 2.6 yards per pass attempt.

Virginia-Lynchburg struggled to sustain long drives, only controlling the ball for 25 of the game’s 60 minutes. Losing 77 yards to penalties certainly also played a role in their struggles. Cincere Clark was a bright spot for the offense, putting up 20 yards receiving on the day to lead Virginia-Lynchburg’s pass-catchers.

South Carolina State snapped a three game losing streak with today’s win. Can the good fortunes continue pushing ahead to next week’s game? It was more of the same for Virginia-Lynchburg as the losses continue to add up for the season. The Dragons’ current losing streak dates to September 1. Each team will get its next chance on October 22. South Carolina State will have a tough matchup at home next weekend, taking on North Carolina Central the no. 3 ranked HBCU team at this point in the season. The Dragons face the potential of double trouble next weekend. They’ll be playing in a hostile environment at A.W. Mumford Stadium while facing Southern, one of the top teams in HBCU football.

While most of the college football world is eagerly anticipating the start of the football season, one HBCU is putting its basketball programs on the shelf and hoping to use its football team to bring financial stability.

Virginia University of Lynchburg announced on Wednesday that it is suspending its men’s and women’s basketball programs.

VUL restarted its athletics program in 2011 after years of inactivity. New athletic director Kyle Reichley says that things shouldn’t have jumped so quickly six years ago.

“It was too much. They should have phased it in,” he told NewsAdvance.com.

Football is the most expensive sport to support financially, but also the most lucrative. VUL has made its living the past few years as a homecoming/money game punching bag for HBCUs and other small schools. Two years ago the NCAA ruled that games against VUL were “non-countable” because the school was not accredited and not in a conference.

Now a member of the National Christian Coaches Athletic Association, VUL is scheduled for an 11-game season, including games against Mississippi Valley State and Tennessee State, and all of those games will count. The school is also seeking a 12th guaranteed game to bring in even more money.

“By and large, football is the king and that’s where your money is coming from,” Reichley said. “Football will carry the athletic program for us.”

The school has applied for a loan from the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Loan Program to build an on-campus basketball arena as it hopes to bring the sport back in 2019 or 2020. VUL says that it will honor the scholarships who remain enrolled in the university, according to the report.
