As HBCU football gears up for the 2025 season, the ‘Brick x Brick’ rebuild of the Johnson C. Smith University (JCSU) football program continues to be one of the top HBCU storylines. The Golden Bulls are entering year four under head coach Maurice Flowers and are coming off of back-to-back winning seasons for the first time in a decade, with Coach Flowers’ first recruiting class maturing into veteran team leaders. One of those veteran leaders is senior wide receiver Brevin Caldwell, who is already setting the tone for his senior season during the final spring football camp of his career.

The 2024 season was a rollercoaster for JCSU football. The Golden Bulls started 8-0 and quickly became one of the hottest teams in HBCU football, drawing national attention with their dominant defense and explosive offense. However, the team stumbled down the stretch, losing their final two games and narrowly missing both the CIAA championship game and a potential NCAA Division II playoff berth. The late-season heartbreak has only fueled the returning players. Guys like Brevin Caldwell, who knows the Golden Bulls’ 2025 campaign is his last chance to bring a championship back to the Queen City for JCSU.

The Charlotte, NC native stars in the premiere episode of the new spring season of Brick x Brick with JCSU Football. HBCU Gameday’s behind-the-scenes docuseries has covered the HBCU football program’s rebuild during Maurice Flower’s tenure in Charlotte.

In the mic-’d-up portion of the episode, Caldwell showcases his determination and professional mindset. He gives viewers a glimpse into the work ethic of a top HBCU football player, as he’s one of the first players on the field before practice in the “First Day Out” episode of the series.

HBCU to NFL

“I’m aspiring for a professional opportunity,” said Caldwell on Brick x Brick. “So it’s just being a pro at everything I do, man. The way that I train, the way that I practice, the way that I live, the way I eat. Taking that professional mindset, applying it here while I’m a senior, and just dominate. So that’s all I can do. And then I try to spread that energy to my teammates.”

That drive is a defining trait of the former West Charlotte High School standout, who arrived at JCSU with big goals and has steadily grown into a leader both on and off the field. Since joining the Golden Bulls, Brevin Caldwell has developed into one of the CIAA’s premier receivers. Over the past two seasons, he has posted multiple 100-yard games and has consistently been one of the top targets in the conference thanks to his route discipline, sure hands, and ability to stretch the field.

“I feel like we pieced it together (last year), man. We found ways to beat really good opponents, obviously let two slip away at the very end. But, you know, that’s what this year is for.” Caldwell has some unfinished business on the personal side too, as his omission from the AFCA DII All-America team is also fueling the 6 foot 1, 185 lb receiver during the offseason. “I feel like I missed out on All-American last year. I was AFCA All-Region. One out of eight guys and four guys got selected for All-American. I wasn’t, you know, a part of the cut.”

CIAA’s Best

During his time at JCSU, Caldwell has built a reputation as one of the top wideouts in the conference. Known for his precise route-running and strong hands, he’s been a consistent threat in the Golden Bulls’ offense. In his career, Caldwell has totaled 180 receptions for 2,286 yards and 14 touchdowns. His standout 2024 performance earned him First team All-CIAA honors and Team Offensive MVP.

But this spring, with a new quarterback under center, the stakes—and potential—are even higher. Enter Fort Valley State transfer Kelvin Durham, one of the top Division II HBCU football quarterbacks in the country. The dynamic dual-threat veteran brings a versatile skill set and big-play ability to the JCSU offense. Caldwell and Durham have already begun to develop chemistry. Developing a connection could be the key to unlocking the full potential of the Golden Bulls’ passing attack in 2025.

Brevin Caldwell on Brick x Brick with JCSU Football | Spring Ball ’25 | First Day Out

“I’ve taken it upon myself to hone in on that chemistry. All the hours that aren’t seen behind closed doors. As soon as he got here, he hit me up. And, you know, we’ve been working ever since. He’s a great natural passer, man, the touch on the deep balls. I mean, I don’t think it gets too much better.”

Caldwell’s attitude seems to resonate with his coaches and teammates as well. He sets a standard for what it means to be a senior leader at an HBCU football program.

“This year, you know, especially this spring is just focusing on the little things that I feel like I could have done better last season. Everybody’s trying to fine-tune their game before the fall. But, you know, I’m here on a mission. Like I said, it’s a professional mindset, and so I’m trying to get myself ready for the pro level, you know. And I know taking those little steps, you know, everything every day is our is our motto. That’s how I’m going to get there. ” Caldwell says in the premiere episode of a special four-episode Spring Ball ’25 season of the ‘HBCU Hard Knocks’ style series on HBCU Gameday.

Brick x Brick, produced by Filmmaker and HBCU Gameday Partner Wali Pitt, gives fans an all-access look into the culture, grind, and brotherhood of JCSU football. As Caldwell anchors the first episode, his journey reflects the dedication, resilience, and pride found within the HBCU sports community. New episodes of Brick x Brick with JCSU Football premiere weekly on the HBCUGameday.com homepage, the Gameday app, and the HBCU Gameday YouTube Channel. Brick x Brick will also air on Fox Soul, Sundays at 7 PM as part of on HBCU Gameday’s flagship show on the Fox affiliated network.

Albany State head coach Quinn Gray is on a mission. Last season, the Golden Rams just didn’t finish like he or the team felt they should have. In 2023, they would make it to the SIAC conference championship, where they would fall to Chennis Berry’s Benedict Tigers.

With a hoard of re-aligning, transfers, and coaching changes, the SIAC is virtually wide open this season. Albany State wants to stake its claim on the title by rebuilding and improving the program. With a solid core of veterans, Quinn Gray could be in a position to return Albany State to the pinnacle of the SIAC, which was last reached by Gabe Giardina.

The ASU Coliseum was the site of the Blue & Gold game. It was a festive atmosphere as the university was hosting an open house for visiting families interested in attending the plush southern Georgia campus. With a full squad of cheerleaders and an impressive 346-member band playing, it was the perfect opportunity for the players to display what they had worked on for 15 days.

The first half belonged to the “Dirty Blue” defense. Led by cornerback Deven Foster, the defense thwarted most attempts by the offense. It would lead to the offense only scoring on field goals in the first half. Foster picked off a pass and ran it down to the offense’s one-yard line before being tackled.

Albany State Quinn Gray SIAC
All-SIAC Quarterback Isaiah Knowles

The second half belonged to the offense. All-SIAC quarterback Isaiah Knowles got things in gear, and the offense scored some touchdowns. Uncharacteristically, Quinn Gray had all quarterbacks except Knowles as live targets in the game.

Albany State senior kicker Kyle Wright was spot-on all game. He nailed every field goal attempt and did a great job performing in swirling wind conditions. “Kyle has done a tremendous job for us in the kicking game when it comes down to field goals and putting points on the board when we aren’t able to put the ball in the end zone,” Gray said. “He understands situations and what his role is when it comes down to putting points on the board. We call him Mr. Automatic.”

Gray commended the play of his team as he used the Spring to evaluate the talent and what holes might need to be filled for the Fall. “Defense played a tremendous first half today and rightfully so. We’ve been at each other all spring and, and here in the Blue and Gold game we really just simplified a lot of things and didn’t, really call everything that we could simply because it is on national TV but at the end of the day, we had enough in that we can put on a good show for the folks and then also get the work that we were trying to get, but defense flew around, pretty good,” Gray said.

ASU Defense hones in on quarterback
ASU Defense hones in on quarterback

Gray went on to explain the live quarterbacks in the game. Knowles wore a white jersey to indicate that he was not live, but backups were in play. “We wanted to make the quarterbacks besides Isaiah live because you’re talking about, Jayden Kenney who played his last meaningful snap in high school in fall of 2023. So with that you’re talking about a guy who hadn’t really seen or felt the hit in a year and a half. So we wanted to make those, those two guys live just to see how they react and what they do with the football in terms of decision making. It was fairly good for us obviously there’s some things we need to clean up, but overall I’m happy with the way it turned out most importantly we’re healthy,” Gray said.

Quinn Gray has overhauled his defensive line position with a coach he experienced at both Delaware State and Alcorn State. “Damon Francis came over from, Fort Valley, who was, who was with myself, Coach Cash, and Matt Brown at Alcorn State, back in 2021. Francis has been doing this for the last 30 plus years. His mindset and the way he coaches and the way he teaches our guys has our guys playing with a different mindset in terms of how we attack and I think we did too much thinking versus reacting and attacking last year and I and it’s evident in what you see on the field now,” Gray Concluded

With the era of coaches and players moving around fluidly on all NCAA levels, the landscape of college football has rapidly changed, and that holds true for Division II as well. Gray has a philosophy in dealing with all that is going on. “As the cliche, you gotta focus on you, right? We can’t necessarily focus on what’s going on in and around the SIAC. We can only handle what we’ve got in front of us, and that’s an opportunity for us to get better as a team with our spring season,” Gray concluded.

The post Ex-HBCU hooper plays Chess with NBA Draft, transfer portal entry appeared first on HBCU Gameday.

]]>
Former HBCU hoops star Duncan Powell just wrapped up a career season in the ACC and has entered both the NBA Draft and the NCAA transfer portal simultaneously. In a move that may be more Chess than Checkers. Powell’s entries into both the draft and the portal utilize a unique position of leverage available for NCAA basketball players. One where NIL money via the transfer portal might outweigh an NBA rookie contract or two-way deal. This leaves players like Powell with more options than ever when it comes to making the leap to the next level.

As a top-100 recruit from DeSoto, Texas. Powell made headlines by committing to North Carolina A&T, becoming the highest-ranked American-born player to sign with an HBCU. His freshman year (2021-22) was marred by injuries, leading to a redshirt season. Returning in 2022-23, Powell earned a spot on the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) All-Rookie team. He averaged 8.0 points and 5.7 rebounds per game in his first season back on the court in over two years. ?

Mid-Major

During his tenure at North Carolina A&T, Powell starred in the HBCU Gameday Original Documentary “Mid-Major.” A collaboration with Duncan’s NIL agency, TLS Sports. Mid-Major gave an in-depth look at his time with the Aggies and showed fans his passions for dogs, music, and HBCU basketball.?

Powell played his only season at NC A&T without the coach who recruited him to the East Greensboro HBCU. Then-head coach Will Jones was let go a month before his freshman season was scheduled to begin. Powell transferred to Sacramento State for the 2023-24 season. As a redshirt Sophomore, he started 23 of 29 games, leading the Hornets with 12.1 points and 7.0 rebounds per game.

In June 2024, Powell committed to Georgia Tech, taking his talents to the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). Throughout the 2024-25 season, he showcased the skillset that made him a top 100 player in his class. Powell averaged 12.2 points and 5.4 rebounds per game. Earning accolades like the Lute Olson National Player of the Week award along the way. Powell scored 20 or more points in five games. Including a standout performance against NCAA Tournament top seed Duke in the ACC Tournament. He tallied 24 points against the Blue Devils after a 24-point effort in a win against Virginia in the previous round.

Chess Move

In March 2025, Powell declared for the NBA Draft while simultaneously entering the transfer portal. Keeping all of his options open in an era of college basketball where anything can change at any given moment.

In today’s college basketball landscape, NIL deals have significantly altered the decision-making process for high-level transfers like Duncan Powell. Top-tier players in the transfer portal can command substantial NIL compensation, often rivaling or even exceeding the earnings of an NBA rookie deal or a two-way contract. A late second-round NBA draft pick or an undrafted player on a two-way contract may earn between $500,000 and $600,000 annually. Some high-profile college transfers have secured NIL packages worth over seven figures.

Under NCAA regulations, college basketball players can declare for the NBA Draft and participate in pre-draft activities to assess their professional prospects. If they do not sign with an agent or maintain their amateur status. They have the option to withdraw from the draft and return to college basketball, provided they adhere to the NCAA’s withdrawal deadlines. This process allows players like Duncan Powell to explore professional opportunities while retaining the possibility of continuing their collegiate careers.?

For Powell, staying in college another year could allow him to maximize his earnings while further developing his skills and improving his draft stock. With the increasing financial opportunities in college basketball, many players now view the transfer portal as a strategic alternative to entering the NBA prematurely. Ensuring they are in the best position—both financially and developmentally—when they make the leap to the professional ranks.

Powell’s journey from HBCU to ACC reflects the evolving landscape of college basketball. Highlighting the trend of HBCU programs nurturing top-tier talent and creating dynamic pathways for student-athletes to navigate their professional aspirations.

Delaware State football is on a mission. Under new head coach DeSean Jackson, the Hornets are trying to build a program that can compete at the highest level. But building something great doesn’t happen overnight, and former NFL star, Hugh Douglas, made sure the players understood what it takes for success in HBCU football.

During a recent practice, Douglas, a Central State University legend and former first-round NFL draft pick, spoke to the Hornets about the importance of unity and discipline. His message was simple but powerful: “Rome wasn’t built in a day.”

Douglas talked about his journey from a small Division II HBCU to becoming an NFL Pro Bowler. He explained that it all started with building a strong foundation and paying attention to the little things. He stressed that Delaware State’s players have a unique opportunity because they have good coaches with NFL experience guiding them.

Words from a pro

“It’s like building a house,” Douglas told the team. “You start with the foundation. This is the foundation. And then you build from there.”

Douglas didn’t hold back about what he saw during practice. He noticed players yelling and pointing fingers when things went wrong. That, he said, was not the way to grow. Instead, he urged them to pick each other up, pat each other on the back, and get ready for the next play.

“You all are brothers. Every dude you see out here right now, you’re gonna walk with them for the rest of your life,” he said. “Pick each other up, man. If you don’t hear nothing else I say today, listen to that.”

Douglas made sure to emphasize that success doesn’t come from shortcuts. “You can’t cut corners and expect to be great,” he added. “The NFL is watching, and they want to see players who are disciplined, committed, and willing to put in the work.”

He also reminded the Hornets about the importance of staying focused on the big picture. “This is just the beginning,” he said. “You’ve got good coaches, you’ve got talent, and you’ve got a chance to be special. But it starts with the details.”

Douglas’s speech wasn’t just motivational—it was a blueprint for success. His journey from Division II HBCU Central State to the NFL showed Delaware State’s players that their dreams are possible if they work hard and stay disciplined. And with DeSean Jackson at the helm, the Hornets are putting in the work to lay a solid foundation.

The team still has a long way to go, but the message was clear: Building something special starts with unity and discipline. If the Hornets can master that, the sky’s the limit.

Delaware State University’s football program is getting a fresh start under new head coach DeSean Jackson. With new energy, accountability, and a determination to build something special, Jackson and the Hornets are ready to make their mark on HBCU football. Showing fans and players that he means business.

The practice was loud and intense, with coaches and players fully locked in. It was the kind of energy that Delaware State football hasn’t seen in a long time. Jackson, known for his electrifying playmaking ability during his NFL career, is now trying to transfer that to the Hornets’ football program.

Culture is changing

“I like the energy so far. You can see a lot of guys that are hungry for change, and the culture is changing,” Jackson said. “It’s just breaking old habits. A lot of guys are used to it being a certain way in past years. I don’t continue to try to talk about the past, but we have to address the elephant in the room. Guys are holding themselves accountable. They’re being asked to do things they’ve never done before.”

DeSean Jackson is fully embracing his new role in HBCU football, even if the transition from player to coach comes with challenges. He acknowledges that one of the biggest challenges is just getting used to everything involved in coaching.

“The biggest challenge I think for me is just getting acclimated with everything… Just not letting it be overwhelming.” Jackson seems determined to take things one step at a time, learning as he goes and keeping his passion for the game alive. “I wake up every day, and I love it, I enjoy it, I never thought being a player and playing all these years that I would be a head coach. But, you know, so far so good. I’m waking up rejuvenated and just giving back to these young men.”

The first open practice featured some explosive moments, particularly from HBCU transfer Kobe Boykin, out of Jackson State, and returning player Marqui Gillis. Boykin and Gillis both showed flashes of their potential. Jackson praised their efforts, saying, “Kobe Boykin showed up and showed out. Marqui Gillis is doing a great job. We’ve got talent here to work with.”

Speed and unpredictability

Jackson’s offensive philosophy, guided by offensive coordinator Nemo Washington, is built around speed and unpredictability. “He’s going to catch a lot of defenses off guard. I think we’ll score a lot of points; we’ll have a lot of yards. The biggest thing is keeping defenses off guard,” Jackson said.

One interesting twist during the practice was the fact that players were practicing without numbers on their jerseys. That made it difficult to identify players, but the energy and effort were unmistakable.

Earlier in the week, the Delaware State team also heard from motivational speaker Inky Johnson and NFL star Hugh Douglas before practice. Johnson is known for his powerful messages of perseverance and leadership. Hugh Douglas, a Central State University legend and former Philadelphia Eagle, brought his own words of encouragement to the team as a former HBCU player himself.

HBCU DeSean Jackson Delaware State

Jackson’s commitment to building a strong team culture is clear. He understands that discipline and passion must go hand in hand. “Allowing the players to be their self… You gotta manage them as well too because they’re young men. So, at times they get out of hand, but you like the passion.” His approach encourages players to be themselves while maintaining control and accountability.

While DeSean Jackson acknowledges there is still a lot of work to be done, he remains optimistic about the future. “Today was the first day we moved in the right direction. Every day you’re going to build, but I think today we really took a step. The offense made some big plays, but defensively, we still have work to do.”

Sydney Bellamy, an HBCU senior at Florida A&M University (FAMU), felt compelled to do something in light of the passing of Southern University student Caleb Wilson. Wilson, who died in what is being termed a result of hazing, was pledging Omega Psi Phi. A member of the collective of black Greek letter organizations known as the Divine Nine.

Bellamy’s why

Bellamy, herself a member of the Divine Nine and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Felt in her spirit that she would not just remain helpless but had to do something to show solidarity.

“Well, after the tragedy happened. I was just thinking on ways that our university, our campus could reflect on this and show our support for Southern University as well as Caleb and his family,” Bellamy said. “The only way that I could really think of was a walk where we could bring all ‘D-9s’ together. That way it could be more effective and more transformative.”

The Walk

Starting from FAMU’s Efferson Student Union, the group of about 100 combined Greek-letter organizations walked peacefully around the HBCU to the main student services building. The Center for Access and Student Success, or CASS Building, is a trademark venue on the FAMU campus, with its huge bronze snake in front of it.

After completing the walk from the top of the campus to the bottom, a brief ceremony was held. Victor Culpepper, Jr., an Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity member, read some brief comments after a short prayer.

The HBCU connection between FAMU and Southern University came in the form of a member of FAMU’s Delta Sigma Theta Sorority who knew Caleb Wilson’s brother. She called him during the brief ceremony, and over the phone, he thanked those for participating and how much it meant to him and his family in this difficult time.

Bellamy admitted that she had serious anxiety about stepping out of the box to form the event. It was squelched when all of the people showed up to participate. “It really does warm my heart just to have everyone here. All the different sororities and fraternities and just Greek life as a whole at FAMU.”

Culpepper felt the walk should be a new beginning for cohesion among Greek-letter organizations. “I think that we should have that type of fellowship throughout the year. Throughout the fraternal year, sorority year.” Culpepper said. “I think that it’s tragic, to say the least that we have to come to this this type of measure, but I think that like I said, the impact that its having on the immediate people who it was affected was shown today.”

RALEIGH, NC — The NCAA Tournament has long been a proving ground for underdogs, and Norfolk State is no stranger to the role. As the Spartans prepare to face No. 1 seed Florida—an overwhelming 28.5-point favorite—head coach Robert Jones is embracing the moment, fueled by a familiar chip on his shoulder.

“I’ve been a little angry,” Jones admitted. “And I’m angry about the way the point spread is and things like that. I know Florida’s really, really good, and they’re a great program with great players. But are we that bad that the point spread is like that?”

Jones and his Spartans have thrived in these moments before. He was an assistant in 2012 when Norfolk State stunned the college basketball world by knocking off No. 2 Missouri. Seven years later, in 2019, they took down Alabama in the NIT. Now, facing one of the most dominant teams in the country, Jones knows the blueprint for an upset.

“Any upset I ever had—2012 Missouri, 2019 Alabama—those were all close games in the first half,” he said. “And it gave us the confidence to kind of push it through the second half. That’s what we’re hoping for tomorrow as well.”

Robert Jones, Norfolk State, HBCU Gameday, NCAA

The Spartans are more than just another HBCU team happy to be in the NCAA Tournament. Jones has built a program that has won 20-plus games in four consecutive seasons and that expects to win, no matter the opponent.

“We’re starting to show that it’s not just about the MEAC or HBCUs — that we’re really one of the best mid-majors in the country,” Jones said.

Norfolk State has tested itself against top competition all season.

“We played Tennessee pretty close. We played — and we beat — High Point. We played Alabama State and a couple of those schools,” Jones noted. “This shouldn’t be a shell shock to us. We have to withstand that first blow. Because I know Florida’s playing for a national championship. But I told my team — we’re one of the 68 teams here—we’re playing for a national championship too.”

That mentality resonates throughout the Norfolk State locker room, especially with veterans like Christian Ings, a rare four-year Division I player in today’s transfer-heavy era.

“Christian Ings is like a dinosaur—the last remaining four-year guy in Division I,” Jones said. “There are kids averaging four points a game transferring, but he’s stuck with us, and he’s been good to Norfolk State. I know he’d love to cap off his career with a win.”

While many see this matchup as a David vs. Goliath story, Jones refuses to accept that narrative.

“A lot of times in the MEAC, we’re always the hunted,” Jones said. “But out of conference, we’re the hunters. And that’s when we try to prove ourselves, to show that it’s more than just the MEAC, more than just being an HBCU.”

As the Spartans prepare for tipoff, Jones has one message for his team.

“No one in the locker room is scared. No one in that locker room is afraid,” he said. “We’re excited about the challenge of playing the University of Florida.”

Norfolk State is set to tip off against Florida in the NCAA Tournament on Friday at 6:50 PM. The HBCU will look to once again show that it can be a giant killer against the odds.

The MEAC Women’s Basketball Championship is set, and for the fifth straight season, Howard University will compete for the conference title against an HBCU rival. Standing in their way? A familiar foe—Norfolk State, the two-time defending champions looking to cement their place as an HBCU basketball dynasty.

These two MEAC powerhouses have faced off in the championship three times before, with Norfolk holding a 2-1 edge. The Spartans are chasing a historic three-peat, while Howard is trying to break through after falling short the last two years.

“It’s like your sister—you live with them every day, but they just annoy you so much,” Howard head coach Ty Grace said about the rivalry. “We know each other inside and out. It’s about who steps up.”?

With a trip to the NCAA Tournament on the line, expect a high-intensity battle between two teams that know each other well.

Season Recap: Norfolk’s Dominance vs. Howard’s Resilience

 • Norfolk State (28-4, 14-0 MEAC): The Spartans ran through the MEAC undefeated, sweeping Howard in the regular season (69-53 at home, 68-56 on the road)??. Their defense has been their calling card, allowing just 56.6 points per game.
 • Howard (20-10, 12-2 MEAC): The Bison are making their fifth straight MEAC championship appearance but haven’t won since 2022. Their only two conference losses this season came against Norfolk, and they’re eager to flip the script?.

Destiny Howell, MEAC, Howard University
Howard University’s Destiny Howell takes a 3-pointer.

Players to Watch

 • Howard’s Destiny Howell (15.1 PPG): One of the MEAC’s top scorers, Howell knows the stakes. “I wanted to be known as a better passer, a better leader. Now it’s time to show it,” she said?.
 • Norfolk’s Diamond Johnson (19.1 PPG, 6.1 RPG): A lethal scorer who thrives in big moments?.
 • Norfolk’s Kierra Wheeler (15.3 PPG, 9.0 RPG): A dominant post presence aiming to lead the Spartans to three straight titles. “We’ve done it two years in a row, but now we want to make it three,” Wheeler said?.

Game Plan: Howard’s Ball Control vs. Norfolk’s Pressure Defense

If Howard wants to win, they must limit turnovers. Norfolk forces nearly 22 turnovers per game, and in their two regular-season meetings, Howard struggled to handle the pressure?.

“We have to be smarter with the ball,” Grace said. “They thrive off our mistakes. If we can play our game, we can win.”?

For Norfolk State, the formula is simple: high-pressure defense and rebounding dominance. They are one of the top defensive teams in the country and rarely give up second-chance points.

“We don’t take possessions off,” Norfolk head coach Larry Vickers said. “We’ve built our program on defense, and we’re not going to change that now.”?

A Historic MEAC Showdown

This game is about more than just a title—it’s about legacy.

For Norfolk State, a victory would make them three-time MEAC champions, solidifying their dynasty.

For Howard, this is a chance to prove they can win on the big stage and avoid another heartbreaking finish.

“We’ve been here before. Now, we need to finish,” Howell said?.

A five-time finalist vs. a team chasing a three-peat.

Two HBCU rivals. One MEAC championship on the line.

Who will come out on top?

HBCU phenom and Howard University freshman guard Blake Harper entered his first MEAC tournament post-game press conference, playing and sounding like a college basketball veteran instead of a freshman ending his first year.
Harper, the newly-minted MEAC Player of The Year, put up a valiant effort in his team’s 91-90 loss to Morgan State.

The 6’7 guard scored 27 points and grabbed eight rebounds while playing 37 minutes in the MEAC Tournament semifinal. He keyed a run that saw Howard go from a 10-point deficit to a one-point lead on a 3-pointer from teammate Cameron Shokley-Okeke with 16 seconds remaining. Morgan State would answer with a Kameron Hobbs layup to re-take the lead with 10 seconds to go. Howard was unable to answer and saw its season end with its first loss in the MEAC Tournament since 2022.

“Just trying to do anything to make my team win. You know, my team is is finding the right spots, and being able to execute,” Harper said of his performance and his team’s late run. “But we came up short.

The Boy Wonder showed why he was named the conference’s top player as well as its top rookie, a first in the 54-year history of the HBCU conference. He scored better than his average of 19.3 points and 6.3 rebounds in the loss. Despite his obvious talent, many people questioned whether or not he should have won the honor due to Howard having just 12 wins on the season. Those doubters may or may not have been convinced, but that doesn’t matter to Blake Harper.

“I’m not really worried about the outside noise. But player of the year…like I work. I worked my tail off all season,” Harper said after the game. “That’s what came with it. But to me, I just wanted to come out and win. But we came up short.”

Harper has gone from a towel boy — literally — to possibly the second most talked about freshman in college basketball (behind Duke’s Cooper Flagg) .

“Nobody really believed in us when the preseason player of the year went down and I still feel like we broke the barriers for sure,” Blake reflected. “And personally, I feel like nobody believed in me — just coming in here — other than our Howard University circle, especially this man on my right and really took me in when I was a chubby senior. And really having no experience playing on this big stage. And I trusted him and got me where I’m at now. And I’m just forever grateful for the coaching staff of the program.”

Harper’s coach, Kenneth Blakeney couldn’t say enough about his superstar freshman. His words mostly remarked who Harper is as a young man moreso than as a basketball star.

“I think for me, it’s the character of who he is, is huge. When you talk about how all the things that he’s accomplished on the court, the type of young man that he is allows him the opportunity to be able to do that. His nuclear household family, and the the way that his loving family raised him. The love and support that the community gives and the love and support that the DC gives him.”

Blake Harper’s size and production have made him the constant target of the financial apparatus that surrounds college basketball in 2025. With the NIL and year-to-year transfer portal, Harper will have every chance to transfer out of Howard and play at some bigger name basketball school for more money. That means everyone from opposing coaches to agents to plane ‘ole leeches see themselves with something to gain from a player that was on very few people’s radar a few years ago.

“I watched him handle things that were very challenging in his life the right way. But he’s also handled success the right way. And going from a person that was undervalued and under looked the majority of his life in the basketball space to having everything that he’s worked his butt off and positioned himself for,” Blakeney said. “He’s never changed. So that’s a great testament to the people in his life, that have supported him, raised and loved him and guided him the right way. He’s, to his credit, accepted all of those things. And is a wonderful young man.”

The chubby kid that no coach wanted and was as recently as last summer a towel boy is now one of the most sought-after players in college basketball. Harper hasn’t said definitively whether or not he’ll stay at the HBCU for another year or hit the transfer portal. He wasn’t asked about it in the post-game press conference at the Scope. But he and his teammates — seniors Marcus Dockery and Anwar Gill — were asked to give final remarks.

The Boy Wonder sounded just as contemplative and reflective as his older teammates as he spoke last.

“For me personally. It’s just a lot of personal growth. And I remember, like, one of the first practices, Coach took me to the side and said, you got to be able to receive your blessings. And I really just been keeping them in my mind throughout the whole season for real. Just to see our team fight, fight, fight and never really give up and never pay attention to what people say bad about us.

“I mean, I’m just so proud of my guys and I’d do it again. I’d do it again in a heartbeat,” he said with the undertone of a man at the crossroads.

“I mean, this was a legendary, ride,” Harper said. “I’ll never forget it — for sure.”

And so, The Boy Wonder went back into the dark night with his college basketball fate only known to him.

Destiny Howell’s triumphant return to the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Tournament has been a beacon of resilience for Howard University’s women’s HBCU basketball team. After being sidelined for the 2023-2024 season due to an ACL injury. Howell’s comeback game in the opening round against Delaware State has invigorated the Bison and underscored her indomitable spirit and unwavering commitment to the game.

Starting things off right

In the 2025 MEAC Tournament quarterfinals, Howard University, seeded second, faced off against the seventh-seeded Delaware State Hornets. The Bison dominated the game, securing a decisive 85-39 victory. Howell led the charge with a stellar performance, contributing 15 points and 3 assists. Her shooting accuracy was noteworthy, hitting 4 of 7 attempts from the field and a perfect 5-for-5 from the free-throw line

Throughout the season, Howell has consistently demonstrated her prowess on the court. In a recent matchup against South Carolina State, she delivered a game-high 21 points, leading four Bison players who scored in double figures. This performance was instrumental in Howard’s commanding 89-39 victory over SC State

Howell’s contributions have not gone unnoticed. She was honored with a spot on the 2025 All-MEAC First Team, a testament to her skill and dedication. This accolade is particularly significant given her previous recognition as the 2023 MEAC Player of the Year and the 2022 MEAC Tournament Most Outstanding Player

Reflecting on her HBCU basketball journey, Howell expressed gratitude and determination. “Just last year I didn’t have this experience of being out there on the floor,” she said during the post game presser. “It feels good to be back, it feels really good to be back, just being in that dark place, not being able to play basketball was really tough fore me the entire year.”

As the Bison advance in the MEAC Tournament, Destiny Howell’s leadership and performance will be pivotal. Her journey from injury to excellence embodies the spirit of perseverance and the pursuit of greatness within HBCU women’s basketball.

Eddie George, former Tennessee Titans running back and Heisman Trophy winner, has officially accepted the head coaching position at Bowling Green State University after a four-year tenure at Tennessee State University (TSU). George led the Tigers to a 9-4 record in 2024 and the first FCS playoff appearance for the HBCU since 2013.

In his official statement regarding the transition, George expressed mixed emotions about leaving TSU but emphasized his commitment to advancing his coaching career: “My love for this school, this institution, extends beyond what you could ever imagine for affording me this opportunity.” George told the Tennessean. He acknowledged the challenges faced during his tenure in HBCU football, noting that while he had hoped for improvements in certain areas, the current timeframe necessitated his decision to move forward.

“Not everything was great, and that’s ok,” said Eddie George to the Tennessean. “It allowed me to grow and be a part of my sport again and it really challenged me as a man through and through. My love for this school, this institution, extends beyond what you could ever imagine for affording me this opportunity.

“There is never a good time for retirement or making a transition, moving on to a new coaching position. I had to really weigh my options and look at what I was walking away from and where I was going toward. There’s a lot of reasons why I made this decision. My intentions were really to stay here at Tennessee State with hopes that things would definitely get better and so forth. And they will, eventually. But just not in this time frame. And I understand that.”

Eddie George at TSU

George’s departure from an HBCU program at the FCS level to an FBS school like Bowling Green of the Mid-American Conference underscores an evolving dynamic in the world of college football coaching. His journey reflects both the progress and the ongoing challenges facing coaches, specifically in HBCU football, looking to land leading roles across the various levels of college football. Highlighting the broader narrative of coaching mobility and the impact that a positive leadership transition can have on collegiate athletic programs.

“I am truly excited to be the head coach at Bowling Green State University,” said George about his move to Bowling Green. “Bowling Green is a wonderful community that has embraced the school and the athletics department. We are eager to immerse ourselves in the community and help build this program to the greatness it deserves. I am overwhelmed with excitement and joy for the possibilities this opportunity holds. I’m also thrilled to be back in the great state of Ohio, where I played my college football. I look forward to meeting the team, the coaches, everyone in the athletics department, and everyone in the BGSU and Bowling Green community.”

Duncan Powell’s basketball journey has been one of resilience and redemption. Once a top-100 recruit, he made headlines as the highest-ranked American-born player to sign with an HBCU when he committed to North Carolina A&T. However, injuries sidelined him for two years, casting doubt on whether he would ever return to the court. After overcoming those challenges, Powell has emerged as a top player in the ACC, scoring 20 or more points in five games this year for Georgia Tech University and earning the prestigious Lute Olson National Player of the Week award.

From HBCU Commitment to Collegiate Stardom

In November 2020, Duncan Powell, a 6’8″ forward from DeSoto, Texas, made headlines by committing to North Carolina A&T State University (NC A&T), choosing the HBCU over other prominent programs. Rated as a four-star recruit by ESPN, Powell’s decision was seen as a significant boost for NC A&T and highlighted the potential of HBCUs to attract top-tier talent.

During his tenure at NC A&T, Powell faced challenges, including injuries that limited his playtime. Despite these setbacks, he showcased his resilience and talent. Powell played in 30 games, starting four of them. He averaged 8.0 points and 5.7 rebounds per game, with a field goal percentage of 42%. Notably, in the season’s final five games, Powell’s performance peaked as he averaged 16.0 points and 9.6 rebounds per game, including double-doubles against Hampton (16 points, 15 rebounds) and Towson (18 points, 10 rebounds). His contributions earned him a spot on the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) All-Rookie team.

His commitment to the team and the broader HBCU community was a major part of his choosing to play at an HBCU, and his journey was chronicled in the HBCU Gameday Original documentary titled “Mid-Major,” which provided an intimate look into his experiences and aspirations.

Transitioning to New Horizons

After his stint at NC A&T, Powell sought new opportunities to further his basketball career. He transferred to Sacramento State for the 2023-2024 season. Powell played in 29 games, starting 23 of them. He led the team with an average of 12.1 points and 7.0 rebounds per game. Powell shot 49% from the field and 69% from the free-throw line. He also contributed 2.0 assists per game, averaging 26.5 minutes on the court. Unfortunately, his season was cut short due to injury, causing him to miss the final five games. His performance caught the attention of Georgia Tech, leading to his transfer to the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) team in June 2024.

Dominating the ACC and National Recognition

Powell’s impact at Georgia Tech has been profound. In a recent week of ACC play, he delivered standout performances that solidified his reputation as a formidable player. He averaged 24.5 points and 6.5 rebounds per game, leading the Yellow Jackets to victories over Pittsburgh and NC State. Notably, Powell set a career-high with 26 points against Pittsburgh, including six three-pointers and two rare four-point plays—a feat achieved only 23 times in Division I this season. He followed this with a double-double, recording 23 points and 10 rebounds in a commanding win over NC State.

These stellar performances earned him the Lute Olson National Player of the Week award, a testament to his hard work and dedication. The award, named after the legendary coach Lute Olson, recognizes outstanding players in Division I basketball, and Powell’s achievement highlights his significant contributions to the sport.

Reflecting on the HBCU Influence

Powell’s journey from NC A&T to national prominence underscores HBCUs’ vital role in developing athletic talent. His initial commitment to an HBCU set the foundation for his growth, resilience, and success. As more top recruits consider HBCUs, Powell’s story serves as an inspiring example of the opportunities and platforms these institutions provide.

In conclusion, Duncan Powell’s recent accolades are not just personal triumphs but also a celebration of the enduring legacy and potential of HBCUs in shaping athletes who excel at the highest levels.

The Albany State Golden Rams finished last season 6-4 with a 20-15 win over the Fort Valley State Wildcats in the Fountain City Classic. That game represented a line in the sand that ASU plans to use to assert itself in HBCU football as a contender for the 2025 SIAC crown. “We return all 11 starters on offense from last year and nine on defense,” head coach Quinn Gray said.

“The experience we got with those guys last year and the way that we played in the Fountain City Classic, defensively, is the ‘Dirty Blue’ defense that we know. To take the momentum from that game and take it into this spring, hopefully, we’ll have a tremendous spring in terms of competition and turn that page from last year moving forward.”

The Golden Rams topped the SIAC in offense. If there was an area that needed some bolstering, it was the defense. If ASU can continue its progress on defense and expand its capabilities on offense. it should be in the position it desires at the end of the season. The Blue and Gold could look to be a top contender in the highly-competitive SIAC.

Gray returns to Bragg Stadium as opposing coach

The Golden Rams will play SWAC HBCU Florida A&M (FAMU) early on. The Sept. 13 game will be Gray’s homecoming. He is in the FAMU Sports Hall of Fame for his record-setting passing under legendary HBCU football head coach Billy Joe. Gray says he will be focused on the task at hand.

“It’s really a tremendous opportunity for us at Albany State to come down and play a good football team. We’re really trying to make sure we understand the magnitude of it. We’re going down to win a ballgame,” Gray said. “All of the outside noise with me coming back and all that good stuff. We really want to test and see where we are as a football team. To come down here and play well and hopefully come out of here with a victory is what it’s all about.”

This year, two Quinn Grays will be on the Albany State sideline. Quinn Gray Jr, who graduates from Tallahassee’s Lincoln High School this year, will be playing for his father this season. After a standout career with the Trojans, Gray Jr. decided to take his talents to where his father is coaching. Gray’s other som, Ashton Chaney-Gray. also graduates from Lincoln High School and will attend ASU as well. This is an honor for his sons to choose to play for him, but they get no favoritism from Quinn Sr.

“Quinn (Gray Jr.) and Ash (Ashton Chaney-Gray) signed to play for me. As a father, you just want to see your boys succeed. If the next level is afforded to them, then it’s afforded to them. Fortunately, they are good football players, and it’s not like I’m doing them a favor. I told them that, at the end of the day, if you’re not playing good football, then you can go somewhere else. Having them with me is a blessing in itself.

Shaqir O’Neal, son of NBA legend Shaquille “Shaq” O’Neal, continues to make significant strides in his HBCU basketball career at Florida A&M University (FAMU.) On February 17, 2025, during a home game against Alcorn State, Shaqir recorded his first double-double, contributing 12 points, 10 rebounds, and 2 blocks to the Rattlers’ 85-76 victory.

Shaqir transferred to FAMU from Texas Southern University in July 2024. He played 20 games at Texas Southern during the 2022-2023 season, averaging 1.4 points per game. His move to FAMU was seen as an opportunity to further develop his skills and an opportunity for “Baby Shaq” to make a more substantial impact on the court.

In the game against Alcorn State, Shaqir was one of five Rattlers to score in double digits. Milton Matthews led the team with 26 points, followed by Ja’Derryus Eatmon with 16 points. Shaqir’s 12-point contribution and his defensive prowess played a crucial role in securing the win. The Rattlers maintained a lead throughout the game, ending the first half ahead 42-34 and continuing their dominance in the second half.

This achievement not only highlights Shaqir’s growth as a player but also underscores the competitive spirit and talent nurtured within HBCU basketball programs. His decision to continue his collegiate career at an HBCU, despite the opportunities available as the son of an NBA legend like Shaq, reflects a growing trend among athletes recognizing not only the rich history and opportunities these institutions offer but also as a hub for developing talent.

HBCU Shaqir O'Neal shaq FAMU

Shaqir’s journey at FAMU has been marked by consistent improvement. Earlier in the season, he delivered a standout performance against Trinity Baptist on November 22, 2024, scoring a career-high 26 points, grabbing nine rebounds, and blocking four shots, leading the Rattlers to a decisive 110-68 victory.

Throughout the season, Shaqir has maintained solid averages of 7.5 points and 3.1 rebounds per game, with a commendable field goal percentage of 51.4%.

As the season progresses, Shaqir O’Neal’s development will be closely watched by fans and analysts alike. This performance is a testament to both Shaqir’s development and FAMU’s remarkable turnaround this season. After a challenging start, the Rattlers have achieved a balanced 12-12 overall record, with an impressive 9-4 standing in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). Notably, the team has secured a four-game winning streak and boasts a strong 8-2 record on their home court.

This past weekend, teams from across the country gathered at HBCU Florida A&M University’s Hansel Tookes Sr. Student Campus Recreation Center for the annual Seminole-Rattler Wrestling Invitational. The NCAA Wrestling event, a collaboration between FAMU and Florida State University, brought together collegiate wrestlers eager to test their skills on the mat.

Among the participating teams were The University of Alabama, Clemson, LSU, Florida State, The University of Georgia, The University of Florida, and The University of Miami. They were joined by Florida Gulf Coast University, UCF, The University of North Florida, Florida International, Kennesaw State, Louisiana Tech, San Jose State, and Troy University in a highly competitive meet.

The legacy and challenges of collegiate wrestling

While only 77 Division I schools sponsor wrestling as an NCAA sport, many more carry it at the club level. Wrestling, one of the oldest recorded sports, has origins dating back 15,000–20,000 years, as depicted in ancient cave drawings.

FAMU, like many colleges, once sponsored wrestling as an NCAA sport but discontinued the program. Following the passage of Title IX in 1972, many schools dropped wrestling to achieve gender equity in athletic programs. Despite this, wrestling remains a thriving club sport at several universities.

The Seminole-Rattler Invitational featured a full day of wrestling, with men’s and women’s divisions competing across various weight classes. The event showcased FAMU’s brand-new, logo-embossed mat, with three matches running simultaneously in the Tookes Recreation Center. Competitors ranged from the 125-pound weight class to the 245-pound division, making for an exciting display of athleticism and skill.

Overcoming NCAA sponsorship barriers

Many conferences seeking to maintain NCAA recognition for wrestling have partnered with affiliate teams. For example, the Big 12 Conference merged with the Western Wrestling Conference to meet NCAA requirements. Similarly, the Big Ten and ACC have had to strategize their conference alignments to sustain wrestling at the collegiate level.

HBCU FAMU

Delaware State to launch women’s wrestling program

In an exciting development for HBCU wrestling, Delaware State University is set to introduce a women’s wrestling program in the 2025-2026 season. This initiative is being supported by HBCU Wrestling, a foundation that has donated $1.25 million to help launch the program.

HBCU Wrestling is dedicated to re-establishing wrestling programs at Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Their mission, as stated on their website, is to “restore and establish Women’s and Men’s wrestling programs at HBCUs, ensuring up to a 10-year commitment to NCAA-sanctioned wrestling programs, scholarships, competitive coaching salaries, and operating budgets.”

Additionally, Morgan State University is expected to be the next institution to benefit from HBCU Wrestling’s expansion efforts.

HBCU FAMU

FAMU’s Wrestling legacy is rich with tradition

FAMU has a proud history of wrestling excellence. In the early 1970s, before the program was discontinued, the school produced standout athletes, including Harold and Carroll Roberts. The twin brothers, both state champions, regularly defeated competitors from Florida State, The University of Florida, and The University of Miami. They remain honored in the FAMU Sports Hall of Fame.

In more recent years, Roland Pitts emerged as one of the greatest wrestlers in FAMU’s history. Competing in the 197-pound weight class, Pitts was a multi-time All-American and an Academic All-American. He later served in the U.S. Armed Forces, achieving the rank of Captain and excelling as a Ranger and member of a brigade combat team. Pitts played a crucial role in keeping wrestling alive at FAMU, despite its status as a non-NCAA sport.

The Future of Wrestling at HBCUs

With renewed interest and financial support, HBCU wrestling is experiencing a resurgence. The efforts of organizations like HBCU Wrestling and the passion of athletes, coaches, and alumni continue to push for the return of wrestling as a fully sponsored NCAA sport at FAMU and other historically Black institutions.

The Seminole-Rattler Invitational was a testament to the resilience and competitive spirit of collegiate wrestling, proving once again that the sport has a home at FAMU.

Watch highlights from an epic primetime MLK Day HBCU hoops showdown between North Carolina A&T (NCAT) and Hampton. Check out the comments from NCAT head coach Monte Ross on the Corbett Center environment courtesy of NCAT Athletics.

“I can’t fault the passion, the effort these guys play with every single night,” North Carolina A&T coach Monté Ross said after the 74-73 loss to their HBCU rivals in front of a season-high crowd of 4,218 at Corbett Sports Center. “It’s a joy to coach them every day. Every night, they just lay it out there on the line. If we keep doing that, we’ll get the Ws that we so desperately desire.”

“The stakes of just trying to get a W in the CAA right now,” Ross said. “We’ve come close. We’ve battled, rumbled. We’ve just got to keep that same type of mentality. We’ll break through.” “That’s what I tell our guys: We signed up for 40 (minutes),” Ross said. “So we’re going to play until that buzzer goes (off). Once that tip-off, we’re committed to 40 minutes.”

“I’d like to thank the fans, the students specifically,” Ross said. “That was a truly raucous crowd. I’m just sorry we couldn’t pull through.” “Sometimes it’s hard to go next-man-up when there’s no man there,” Ross said. “We’ve run into some bad luck here with injuries, but I won’t allow these guys to make any excuses.” “We’ve asked guys to step up, especially our guards, and to rebound the basketball,” Ross said. “Seventeen rebounds is just outstanding. It’s a testament to his work ethic and trying to help us wherever he can.”

Elijah Williams’ journey to becoming the MEAC Defensive Player of the Year and one of the top 2025 NFL Draft prospects in HBCU football was built on hard work, faith, and leadership. During a one-on-one interview, the Morgan State star reflected on his path and what it will take to make a name for himself in the NFL.

Coming out of high school, Williams faced challenges with academics that nearly derailed his football dreams. “Coming out of high school, grades was really cheap, really bad,” Williams shared. “I had my senior year, I was doing my work, and I was able to bring my GPA to where I was college eligible. When it really showed me, I’m like, dang, school is actually this easy? I should have just been doing my work the whole time.” A late call from Morgan State, however, changed everything. “I didn’t know where I was gonna go per se,” he said. “I was probably gonna try the Juco route, prep school route. And then out of nowhere, my coach calls me and says, yeah, Morgan State’s gonna call you. They wanna give you an offer. I’m like, that’s crazy. And then Morgan State called me. I wind up committing the next week.”

As Williams arrived at the Baltimore HBCU, his relentless work ethic quickly set him apart. “I’m always going hard at practice,” he explained. “You can ask anybody. Sometimes the players will be like, ‘Yo, Eegs, you want to chill a little bit?’ I’ll be like, nah, bro, gotta go hard. Even on the Thursdays, you know? Just out there grinding.” That determination paid off in his senior year when he broke Morgan State’s sack record with 11 sacks. Reflecting on the moment, he said, “I didn’t get a sack until overtime. Then the time came, he held the ball a little longer, worked the move, went through the back. I’m like, ah man, let’s get it. And then everybody was hyped. It was real genuine happiness. My D-line guys, linebackers, everybody was happy for me.”

Williams credits his father for building his foundation of hard work and his faith for guiding him through challenges. “My father was definitely a big part of my success,” he said. “He really set the foundation. Even though he’s not the Babe Ruth or anything or the best at any sport, he understood what it took. During the summer, I had to stay 105 so I wouldn’t be a heavyweight on the D-line. We’d be down at the park grinding. Then we’d walk across the street, go to the pool, get another pool workout. He made it fun for me. And that’s how I really view grinding now. Like, it hurts, but it’s fun at the same time.” Faith also played a key role in his journey. “Keep God first in everything you do,” he emphasized. “He’s really gonna put you in the situations that you need to be in, not necessarily the places you want to be.”

Over his four years at Morgan State, Williams grew into a team leader. “The team is really leaning on me to perform every day, day in, day out,” he said. “To give a certain effort that’ll set the tone for the rest of the team. Coach Vaughn always says, ‘Elijah, you don’t gotta make every play. You gotta trust your teammates.’ I really understood how to play a specific role, and my greatness can come through the scheme.”

Reflecting on his time in the MEAC, Williams spoke about the intensity of HBCU rivalries. “I’m not gonna lie, I love playing Howard though,” he said. “Great atmosphere every time. It’s never gonna be a dull game.” He also expressed pride in Morgan State’s growth during his time there. “Morgan State invested in itself,” he shared. “Now we have new Thurgood, a new cafeteria. It’s just been a lot of growth here. And I’ve been able to grow as a person as well, not just on the football field but off the football field. It’s really taught me a lot.”

Looking ahead to the NFL Draft, Williams is focused on preparing for the next chapter. “I know I got to really lock in on my craft,” he said. “The things I did in college, that doesn’t matter here. I have to create a whole new name for myself. That can only come about through prayer and hard work.”

From an underdog to a record-breaking player, Elijah Williams’ journey at Morgan State is a testament to resilience and faith, as he prepares himself to possibly be one of the handful of players to hear their names called at the NFL Draft.

What if I told you that one of the top scorers in Division I HBCU basketball averaged just over 10 points at the Division II level only a season ago?

Meet KC Shaw

Charlotte, NC native Kentron “KC” Shaw is averaging 18.5 points per game in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore after transferring from Division II HBCU Winston-Salem State. The Junior guard followed his head coach, Cleo Hill Jr., who took over in the same capacity at UMES in June of 2024.

Despite limited shots during his freshman season, he provided the Rams with energy, starting every game, which paid off with the WSSU winning the 2023 CIAA Championship.

Shaw averaged 10 points a game as a sophomore and had multiple games with over 15 points while also being a great defender and rebounder. The Rams came up short of being back-to-back CIAA champs and once coach Hill decided to take the head job at the UMES, so did KC.

Now, KC Shaw has followed his coach to a new home and is one of the top players in the conference. With his profile growing in the MEAC. I sat down to interview KC Shaw before the Hawks game in Durham against North Carolina Central about his journey from DII to DI HBCU basketball.

“It’s been a great experience so far actually. Great strength and conditioning coaches, Great teammates, great basketball, with a lot of focus and a lot of resources… It was a great transition, I definitely give credit to all my coaches. Coach B and them for always working with me from Day One and seeing something that I didn’t see within myself.”

I also got a chance to speak to his younger brother and teammate freshman guard Kyrell “Ky” Shaw and asked him how about his transition from high school to Division I basketball.

“It’s a big turnaround for real. Coming from high school to going to college you not the man no more,” Shaw said. “Everybody that’s on your team was the man at the school so you just gotta adjust for real.”

KC spoke about traveling to different states and playing in different arenas with his younger brother.

“It’s definitely been great, definitely tougher than high school. From running around, throwing alleys to each other but now it’s through a system with harder teams.”

While the Shaw brothers are enjoying being teammates again, the elder KC understands where his brother is as a freshman and both have their eyes set on a different set of goals.

“Win player of the year and win the MEAC.”

“Keep progressing as a player and keep finding out my role,” Ky Shaw said.

KC and Ky are still getting their feet wet as Coach Hill and the Shaw brothers navigate their first season in the MEAC.

With conference play in full swing, HBCU basketball has taken notice of KC’s scoring abilities and the former DII hooper is no longer flying under the radar, as he and the new regime at UMES look to establish themselves as we get into the thick of the conference schedule.

Stan Waterman is no stranger to success, and now he’s bringing that winning mindset to HBCU basketball at Delaware State University. In an engaging interview on 1-on-1 with Cobi, Waterman reflected on his journey from being a Delaware basketball legend to transforming DSU basketball into a competitive force in the MEAC.

“When I got here, the culture wasn’t about winning,” Waterman shared. “We had to shift everything—mindset, work ethic, discipline. Winning had to become the expectation, not just the hope.”

Waterman’s journey began long before Delaware State. As a standout player and later a championship-winning coach at Sanford School, he built a reputation for excellence. His success extended to the international stage when he coached the USA U-16 and U-17 Junior National Teams, leading them to two gold medals.

“Coaching USA Basketball was a career highlight,” he told Cobi. “I worked with future NBA stars and some of the best coaching minds at the high school, college, and NBA levels. It shaped how I approach the game today.”

Despite his success, Waterman admitted that transitioning to college coaching presented challenges, particularly with the impact of NIL deals and the transfer portal. Last season, three of his top five players, including the MEAC Rookie of the Year, transferred to larger programs.

“At first, I took it personally,” Waterman said. “I wondered if I wasn’t doing enough to keep them. But then I realized, this is just part of today’s game. The portal isn’t just a loss; it’s also an opportunity to bring in new talent.”

Delaware State has made significant strides under Waterman’s leadership. Last season, the Hornets reached the MEAC championship game, coming within minutes of an NCAA tournament berth.

“We had the lead with two minutes to go against Howard,” Waterman recalled. “It didn’t end the way we wanted, but that experience is a springboard for this season.”

Recruiting has also been a focal point for Waterman. He praised the support of DSU’s president, Dr. Tony Allen, and the momentum the university has generated as a leading HBCU.

“Our president always talks about being unapologetically HBCU,” Waterman said. “The energy on campus is incredible, and when recruits visit, they see that. It’s not a hard sell when you combine that with our plans for new facilities and our growing reputation.”

Waterman takes great pride in leading a program in his home state.

HBCU Delaware State University

“It’s a dream job,” he told Cobi. “I grew up here, played here, and now I get to coach here. It means everything to me.”

As the MEAC season continues, Waterman is focused on keeping Delaware State University competitive in a tough conference.

“From Howard to Norfolk State to Central, every night is a battle,” Waterman said. “But that’s what makes this league special. You have to bring your best every single game.”

Looking ahead, Waterman remains clear about his goals.

“We’ve laid the foundation,” he said. “Now, it’s about taking that next step—winning the MEAC, making the NCAA tournament, and putting Delaware State on the map as a force in HBCU sports.”

With Waterman at the helm, the Hornets are poised for continued growth, proving that success starts with vision, hard work, and a belief in what’s possible.

Women’s basketball takes center stage as HBCU Gameday releases the latest iteration of its ‘Brick x Brick’ Original Series. Taking the action to the hardwood in 2025 with the women’s basketball program at Johnson C. Smith University (JCSU).

The first two seasons of ‘Brick x Brick’ followed the football program at JCSU as head coach Maurice Flowers took over a 2-win program and turned them into one of the top teams in HBCU football. Now, the show follows the JCSU women’s hoops program and coach Monterika Warren. The second-year Golden Bulls head coach leads a team of nine players and two coaches into their 2025 CIAA season.

Brick x Brick with JCSU Women’s Basketball

The HBCU Gameday Original Series continues to give viewers unprecedented behind-the-scenes access to JCSU athletics, this time covering HBCU women’s basketball like never before. From Practice to shootaround and inside the locker room during games, HBCU filmmaker Wali Pitt combines these elements with in-game highlights to create a compelling narrative that tells the story both on and off the court.

“I’ve wanted the chance to tell an HBCU women’s hoops story for a while now,” said Pitt. “When I met Coach Warren last year, it felt very similar to meeting Coach Flowers back in 2022, the CIAA is one of the toughest leagues in women’s basketball and I think fans will appreciate how hard this team competes as underdogs in a tough conference.”

The first two episodes follow JCSU as they look to get two big conference wins over Lincoln University and Virginia Union the week before Winter Break. The Golden Bulls came into both games with only nine active players but still believed they had what they needed to win. Delaware State University football is undergoing a major transformation under new head coach DeSean Jackson, and one of the first players to join this new era is wide receiver Anthony James Jr. The former HBCU wide receiver from Morgan State player has transferred to conference rival Delaware State, drawn by the chance to learn from Jackson, a former NFL star known for his elite skills and game-breaking ability.

James explained that his decision to transfer was about more than just football. “I want to learn the way he thinks,” James said. “How does he look at the defense? How does he know what’s going on? Everybody has different ways of coaching, and I just want to see how he thinks about his routes.” For James, it’s about personal growth and development, and he is eager to compete in his new environment.

Other members of DeSean Jackson’s first recruiting class include some of the most talented players Delaware State has seen in years. Wide receiver Jadyn Robinson, a three-star recruit from Junipero Serra High School in Gardena, CA, is among them. Robinson, who had scholarship offers from Grambling, Texas, Arizona State, and Syracuse, is more than likely the highest-rated recruit in recent history for the program. His decision to join Delaware State over schools with long-established football traditions is a testament to the excitement Jackson is building around the Hornets.

The recruiting class also includes running back Kobe Boykin from Los Angeles, a three-star talent transferring from Jackson State, and 6’7” offensive lineman Elijah Payne, who started his career at Arizona. Both players bring size and skill to key positions. Running back Derek Boyd from Crenshaw, CA, and safety Tracy Foe Jones from Long Beach Poly High School round out a group of athletes Jackson is bringing to Delaware State from the West Coast, establishing a new pipeline for the HBCU program.

James, Robinson, and the rest of this talented group are part of Jackson’s vision to elevate Delaware State football and raise the program’s profile in HBCU sports. “He’s going to bring attention. He’s going to bring exposure,” James said about Jackson. The new head coach’s ability to recruit top-tier talent, coupled with his NFL pedigree, has created a sense of optimism around the program.

HBCU DeSean Jackson Delaware State University

With a revamped roster and a fresh approach, Delaware State University is poised to turn heads in the MEAC this season. The combination of experienced transfers and high-caliber recruits like Robinson is a clear sign that the Hornets are ready to compete at a higher level. HBCU football fans will be watching closely as Delaware State’s new chapter unfolds.

When Kenny Gallop Jr. arrived at Washington D.C. HBCU Howard University, he had one goal in mind: to make the most of his opportunity. Fast forward to 2024, and the star safety has done just that. With a long list of accolades and a reputation as a leader on and off the field, Gallop is making a strong case as an NFL prospect.

“I’ve always believed in myself,” Gallop said. “When you write your goals down and work for them, there’s no better feeling than seeing it all payoff.”

Gallop’s journey to this moment is a story of determination, resilience, and staying true to his roots. Hailing from the 757 area—a region known for producing legendary athletes like Michael Vick and Allen Iverson—he grew up with a chip on his shoulder. “We don’t get the most exposure, but if you know, you know,” he explained. “We’re hungry, and that mindset drives us.”

In 2023, Gallop’s hunger was on full display. He was named MEAC Defensive Player of the Year and helped Howard win their first MEAC title in over three decades, a monumental achievement for an HBCU football program. His standout performances included eight solo tackles against Morgan State to secure a Celebration Bowl berth and a season-high 11 tackles with a game-clinching interception during homecoming against Norfolk State. “Big-time players make big-time plays,” Gallop said. “I just trust myself and go out there believing I’m the best player on the field.”

Gallop’s achievements didn’t stop there. In 2024, he earned preseason recognition across the board: MEAC Preseason Defensive Player of the Year, a third Preseason All-American accolade, and spots on watch lists for the Reese’s Senior Bowl and Buck Buchanan Award. His dominance has put him firmly in the conversation as a top NFL prospect from an HBCU. “It’s all a blessing,” he said. “It shows the work you’ve put in and the sacrifices you’ve made.”

Off the field, Gallop’s leadership has been just as impactful. When he first arrived at Howard, he described himself as quiet and observant. But over time, he grew into a vocal leader who inspired his teammates by example. “I’d get there early, leave late, and put in the extra work,” he said. “Younger guys watch you, so I wanted to be someone they could look up to.”

Gallop’s decision to stay at Howard University, despite the lure of the transfer portal, speaks volumes about his character. “Howard was my only scholarship offer,” he said. “It felt like home. I made a 40-year decision, not a four-year one. The brotherhood, the culture, and the support—it all means more than money.”

For Gallop, the NFL dream began to feel real after his sophomore year when coaches and teammates started telling him he had a shot. “I’ve always wanted to go to college and not have my parents pay for it,” he shared. “But when people started saying I had NFL potential, I started believing it too.”

As his name surfaces in NFL discussions, Gallop remains focused on the legacy he’s building at Howard University and within the broader HBCU community. “I want to be remembered not just for what I did on the field, but for the kind of person and leader I was,” he said. “When you talk about Howard, I want Kenny Gallop Jr. to be a name that lasts forever.”

With his impressive resume, tireless work ethic, and undeniable talent, Kenny Gallop Jr. is well on his way to leaving a lasting mark at Howard, in the HBCU community, and, perhaps soon, in the NFL.

Virginia Union University’s Jada Byers is no ordinary athlete. With his sights set on the NFL, Byers reflects on the remarkable journey that took him from his hometown to breaking records at an HBCU, all while staying humble and focused on the future.

“I took three days of rest after the season,” Byers said, already preparing to take the next step toward the NFL. His drive to succeed is evident, fueled by an impressive HBCU football career where he set the Panthers’ all-time record for rushing yards (5,311) and touchdowns (70). This season alone, he shattered the single-game record with an eye-popping 324 rushing yards and six touchdowns against Bowie State.

Despite these accomplishments, Byers remains grounded. “To leave a legacy like that feels great, but it’s really not about me,” he said. “It’s about the kids looking up to me and believing they can be great at any level.”

Faith has been a cornerstone of Byers’ life and career. “Every day, I wake up and thank God,” he shared. “Everything I’ve been through—good and bad—is part of His plan. Even this interview is part of my journey.”

HBCU NFL Virginia Union

His journey hasn’t been without challenges. Byers opened up about his daughter’s illness during his time in HBCU football, an experience that strengthened his resolve. “If she can push through, so can I. If I gave up, it felt like I’d be letting her down,” he said. “That connection we have motivates me every day.”

Much of Byers’ success can be attributed to the mentorship and support he received at Virginia Union. He spoke highly of the guidance he received from his coaches, including head coach Alvin Parker and running backs coach Diego Ryland. “Coach Parker gave me the opportunity to shine, and I ran with it,” he said. “Coach Ryland taught me how to be a man. I could call him anytime—3 a.m., midnight—and he’d be there to talk.”

When asked about his mindset heading into NFL preparation, Byers kept it simple. “Just be you,” he said. “Don’t try to change yourself for anyone. If they give me a chance, I’ll give them everything I’ve got.”

Byers also highlighted the role his community played in shaping him. “I want to give my community something because they gave me so much,” he said. “When I come back home, it’s special. The kids look up to me, and I want to make sure I’m giving them hope.”

As he prepares for the next chapter, Byers draws inspiration from his family, particularly his daughter. “My daughter motivates me every day,” he said. “I want her to see that her dad worked hard and never gave up.”

Jada Byers is more than just a record-breaking running back. He’s a testament to perseverance, humility, and faith. With his NFL dreams within reach, Byers’ story is one of resilience and inspiration—a legacy that will continue to motivate those who follow in his footsteps. “Just be you,” he repeated. “Trust the process and never stop working.”

Coppin State women’s basketball secured a historic 74-68 overtime victory against Arizona State on December 5, 2024. The win marks the first time any Coppin State athletic program has defeated a Power 4 opponent, making it a milestone for the HBCU. Angel Jones and Laila Lawrence combined for 43 points as Coppin State’s women’s basketball team knocked off Big 12 opponent Arizona State, 74-68 in overtime on Thursday night at PEC Arena.

Coppin State’s starters carried the load, scoring all 74 points. Angel Jones led with 23 points and key free throws in overtime, while Laila Lawrence added 20 points and 9 rebounds. Their combined efforts outpaced Arizona State’s defense.

“We executed the game plan,” said Jones. “If we’re confident in our abilities, we can succeed.”

Head coach Jermaine Woods credited the win to disciplined defense. The team forced 20 turnovers and limited Arizona State’s bigs by doubling in the post and forcing outside shots.

“Our goal was to make them uncomfortable,” said Woods. “The players executed the plan perfectly.”

HBCU

Despite being outrebounded, Coppin State minimized second-chance opportunities, holding Arizona State to just ten offensive rebounds.

Jones and Lawrence highlighted why they are key players for the Eagles. Lawrence emphasized the team’s focus on effort and preparation.

“We work hard every practice, no matter how tired we are,” she said. “It’s about giving our best every time.”

This victory goes beyond a single game, showcasing the strength of HBCU athletics. Woods highlighted the importance of such wins in bringing recognition to Coppin State and other HBCUs.

“We are a Division I program, and on any day, we can compete,” he said.

As Coppin State heads into MEAC play, this win fuels momentum and confidence. It’s a clear statement: HBCU basketball can compete on the national stage.

BALTIMORE, Md. (Nov. 2, 2024) — The Morgan State defense and special teams unit overcame early issues with the offense and fought back from an early three touchdown deficit to overwhelm Norfolk State 38-37 in overtime to win their first MEAC game of the season.

Coming into this game, Morgan State was looking to snap a two-game skid and put themselves into the MEAC Championship race.

The Bears got into some trouble early. Three plays into the game, MSU quarterback Duce Taylor fumbled on a run up the middle. That turnover led to a 45-yard field goal by Brandon Willcox, giving the Spartans an early 3-0 lead with 11:32 left in the quarter.

Morgan (4-5, 1-1 MEAC) then went on a 12-play drive that ended inside the red zone. That resulted in a 35-yard field goal by freshman Sahr Gbundema that tied the game at three with 5:21 left.

Norfolk State (3-7, 1-2 MEAC) then scored twice in 16 seconds. The first was on a one-yard “tush push” of Jalen Daniels into the endzone with 12:52 remaining. Then another Morgan fumble by Taylor led to a 27-yard touchdown run by Daylan Long with 12:36 remaining. Norfolk State pulled ahead 17-3.

On the next Morgan possession, Taylor fumbled again inside Norfolk territory. Two plays later, a 23-yard touchdown pass from Daniels to Jacquez Jones pushed the Spartans’ lead to 23-3. The extra point from Wilcox extended the Spartan advantage to 24-3 with 11:10 left in the first half.

Tahj Smith stepped onto the field to take over from Morgan on the next drive, injecting a sense of urgency into the Bears’ game plan. The play unfolded seamlessly as Smith engineered a 16-play, 75-yard drive that was capped by a pitch to Collins, who powered his way through the defensive line, diving into the end zone from just a yard out. Following the touchdown, Gbundema lined up for the extra point, and as the ball sailed through the uprights, the Bears found themselves with a glimmer of hope, narrowing the Spartan lead to 24-10 with just 2:35 left to play in the first half.

The Bears used a trick play with the end round from Andre Crawley to Smith for a TD with 31 seconds left. The extra point was missed by Gbundema. Morgan trailed with a score of 24-16. That would be the halftime score.

Morgan’s special teams unit stepped up huge for the Bears in the second half. The Bears started the second half when Myles Miree scored on a one-yard plunge with 1:45 left. The two-point conversion pass was no good. The Bears pushed to within 24-22.

In a thrilling turn of events during the closely contested game, Bryan Stukes came up big for Morgan as he lunged to block a crucial 34-yard field goal attempt. Jadon Carter scooped up the ball from the turf and raced 66 yards for a touchdown with 11:20 left, placing Morgan firmly in the lead with a score of 28-24.

Norfolk fought back with a 9-yard pass from Daniels to Elyja Mitchell with 7:46 left in regulation to give the Spartans the lead back. The extra point was good, making it 31-28 in favor of the Spartans.

What could’ve been a punt return for a touchdown from Malique Leatherbury with 3:38 left was waived off due to a running into the kicker penalty. A few plays later, Smith fumbled on a fourth down play with 2:15 left, which was recovered by the Spartans’ AJ Richardson.

With the stakes high and the scoreboard tightly contested, the Bears faced a crucial test after conceding a turnover. Instead of allowing the mistake to dictate the outcome, the defense rallied together, even though the Bears had to go through all three of their timeouts to help keep time on the clock.

Morgan was down to their last possession at their own 20 with 1:45 left in regulation. They drove 49 yards in 11 plays. It led to Gbundema converting a 47-yard field goal with 22 seconds left in regulation to help force overtime at Hughes Stadium.

Morgan head coach Damon Wilson’s praise for kicker Sahr Gbundema underscores the significance of seizing opportunities.

“Sahr has never kicked in college before,” Morgan head coach Damon Wilson said about Gbundema. “Our kicker went down in walkthrough practice and he showed up. He took advantage.”

“This is the point where you say when preparation meets opportunity, it equals success,” added Wilson. “That’s what he did today. He is always the first on the field to practice and the last one to leave. He’s been preparing for this opportunity and he gave us a chance to win.”

In a thrilling turn of events during the first play of overtime, Smith showcased his pinpoint accuracy and poise under pressure. He found an open Jaden Coffen streaking down the field, delivering a crisp 25-yard touchdown pass that ignited the crowd.

Then on the defense, Elijah Williams sacked Daniels in overtime, which gives him 29 in his career. This broke the Morgan record held previously by Christopher Robinson, who compiled 28.5 sacks. Despite what happened, the Spartans found the endzone when X’Zavion Evans ran it in from three yards out on a direct snap to pull within 38-37.

Morgan State Norfolk State MEAC

With the clock ticking down and the stakes higher than ever, the decision was made to risk it all and go for a two-point conversion instead of settling for a tie. The pass from Daniels into the corner of the endzone sailed over the outstretched hands of the receiver and sealed the Bears’ triumph.

Next week, the Bears take their show on the road for the last time in the MEAC regular season when they head to Dover to take on the Delaware State Hornets. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.

NCCU welcomed Morgan State to its 2024 Homecoming for a hard-fought October HBCU football showdown. Watch the highlights here and check out the game recap courtesy of NCCU Athletics below.

DURHAM, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University (NCCU) football team celebrated Homecoming with a 16-7 victory over Morgan State on Saturday at O’Kelly-Riddick Stadium, holding the Bears to just over 200 yards of total offense.

The No. 20/21 Eagles (6-2, 2-0 MEAC) have won five straight games.

The Eagles got on the board first when quarterback Walker Harris connected with Markell Quick on a deep pass up the middle for a 49-yard touchdown to take a 7-0 lead. That play, at the 7:06 mark of the second quarter, capped a 4-play, 76-yard drive.

That score held at the half.

Midway through the third quarter, after the Eagles went 52 yards on eight plays, Kaleb Robison made his first career field goal from 21 yards to grow the lead to 10-0.

Morgan State made it a one-possession game with the 9:58 mark of the fourth quarter, taking advantage of a rare Harris interception when Jason Collins, Jr. capped an 8-play, 34-yard drive with a 2-yard score to trim the Eagles’ lead to 10-7.

The Eagles answered on the ensuing drive. On the sixth play of a drive that started on the NCCU 27-yard line, J’Mari Taylor kept his touchdown streak alive with a 50-yard run to the end zone. With 6:37 to play, the Eagles led 16-7.

The Bears (3-4, 0-1) had one more chance, but Thomas Jackson sacked quarterback Tahj Smith on 4th-and-10 with 4:24 remaining to end the drive and give the ball back to the Eagles.

Morgan State never touched the ball again, and the Eagles ran out the clock.

NCCU will hit the road this coming Thursday, heading to Orangeburg, S.C., to take on South Carolina State. The HBCU football game will air live on ESPNU at 7:30 p.m.

Watch HBCU football highlights from Hampton’s trip to Greensboro, NC for the Greatest Homecoming on Earth (GHOE) against North Carolina A&T, and see how Hampton walked away with a 40-point win in front of a sold-out Aggie crowd. Read what North Carolina A&T head coach Vincent Brown had to say about the game in the recap courtesy of NC A&T Athletics.

GREENSBORO – It was going to be the greatest story of North Carolina A&T’s 2024 season so far.

Or so it looked for about 15 minutes.

But Hampton interfered, spoiling the football part of the Greatest Homecoming on Earth on an otherwise glorious mid-October Saturday afternoon for HBCU football. The 59-17 result stung for the Aggies, whose occasional highlights get muted by penalties and turnovers.

There were no celebrations within the football facility despite the clamoring noise in the parties surrounding the stadium, where more than 23,000 fans had gathered earlier.

“That was an abject failure in every form and fashion,” Aggies coach Vincent Brown said. “We looked like a poorly coached team, and I own that.”

A&T’s good moments came early in its first game at Truist Stadium in more than a month. The Aggies led 14-3 early in the second quarter when there was a brief delay because of a drone over the field. The momentum’s shift had already begun and there was no reversing it.

“I am utterly sick,” said Brown, whose team dropped to 1-6 overall and 0-3 in the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA). “The way we started (with such promise), it’s so disappointing.”

Homecoming heroes were lining up for the Aggies, and some were first-time participants in A&T’s annual HBCU football showcase of Aggie Pride. Freshman Tre Mittman intercepted a pass to shorten Hampton’s first possession of the game. Mittman’s efforts were followed two plays later by Cameren Dalrymple’s 5-yard touchdown run. A&T’s momentum grew when Wesley Misenheimer recovered a Hampton fumble. The Aggies converted on freshman Daniel Coles’ 17-yard catch from quarterback Justin Fomby for a 14-0 lead.

“I’m thinking maybe this is our breakout moment offensively,” Brown said.

HBCU football North Carolina A&T homecoming Hampton

It unfortunately was not.

The only points A&T could muster the rest of the way came on Andrew Brown’s 31-yard field goal in the final minute of the third quarter. The Pirates rattled off 31 consecutive points. Later, they outscored A&T by 28-0 in the fourth quarter.

The Pirates (4-3, 1-2) snapped a two-game skid just days after Trent Boykin was elevated from Hampton interim coach to head coach. Some locals on the Hampton roster had their own homecoming action, with Grimsley alum Chris Zellous firing a touchdown pass and Randleman graduate Ja’Quan Snipes running for two touchdowns and a game-high 71 yards.

“We knew that they were going to be ready to play,” Boykin said. “They were going to be excited. We didn’t panic.”

The Pirates went back to Virginia, leaving the Aggies to ponder how they’ll pick up the pieces. A&T’s defense surrendered 231 rushing yards. Fomby threw for 240 yards, though he was intercepted twice. Ger-Cari Caldwell made five catches for 98 yards, approaching his 130 yards from the previous game at Richmond.

On defense, Kade Moledor was in on 10 tackles. A&T has five games remaining, five more times to figure it out. Brown pointed to what have been months of establishing a foundation, and he is not ready to stop building on that foundation.

“There will be many people on the outside looking to tear down,” Brown said. “… I see the big picture.”

Brown said that in his football career as a player and coach, he has learned that challenging times are what have helped him along that way. “We’re going to need tremendous leadership from our players,” he said. “The lessons for our players are going to be about resiliency.”

Game Recap

Johnson C. Smith University (JCSU), one of the oldest HBCU football programs in the country, continued its remarkable season by defeating Virginia State 21-17. This victory allowed JCSU to remain undefeated at 6-0, marking its best start since winning the CIAA title in 1969. Check out the HBCU football highlights from a big-time road win for the NCCU football program as the Eagles dominate Campbell University on their home turf. Game recap courtesy of NCCU Athletics.

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The NCCU football team picked up its third straight win on Saturday, upending Campbell University 45-14 at Barker-Lane Stadium.

The Eagles improved to 4-2 overall on the season.

The Eagles took their second drive of the game 94 yards for the first score, when quarterback Walker Harris connected with Joaquin Davis for a 5-yard touchdown pass to give N.C. Central an early 7-0 lead.

On the ensuing drive, NCCU defense forced a three-and-out by the Fighting Camels, then wide receiver Darryl Taylor took the punt 68 yards for a touchdown and put the Eagles up 14-0.

It was the Eagles’ second score on a punt this season; Trey Goodriddge recovered a blocked punt in the end zone two weeks ago against North Carolina A&T.

Special teams came up big again for the Eagles, following a botched snap on a Campbell punt, giving N.C. Central 1st-and-goal from the 1-yard line. On the ensuing play, J’Mari Taylor ran in for a touchdown, giving the Eagles a 21-0 lead.

NCCU took their final drive of the opening half 66 yards for a touchdown in just nine plays. Harris recorded his second rushing touchdown of the season from three yards.

NCCU football

The Eagles took a 28-0 lead into the locker room for the half.

The Camels got on the board in the third quarter, going 83 yards in four plays, ending in a 55-yard rushing touchdown by VJ Wilkins at the 6:19 mark to cut the lead to 28-7.

The Eagles responded to Campbell’s score in the final minute of the quarter, when Harris connected with Chauncey Spikes for a 10-yard pass, completing a 75-yard, 10-play drive that extended the Eagles’ lead to 35-7.
Juan Velarde added three more points to the Eagles’ total with a 43-yard field goal after N.C. Central notched a turnover on a fumble recovery by Matt Leavelle.

The Camels cut into the lead again after a rushing touchdown by Mike Chandler II for 72 yards to cap off an 80-yard, 2-play drive with 13:36 left in the contest.

But the Eagles rebutted the Camels’ score with a two-play drive of their own. Christian Mosley scored on a 57-yard run with 12:55 remaining to extend N.C. Central’s lead to 45-14.

North Carolina Central will return to O’Kelly-Riddick Stadium this coming Saturday for HBCU football action, as the Eagles welcome Virginia-Lynchburg to Durham, N.C. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. and the game can be seen live on ESPN+.

The Charlotte, North Carolina HBCU is amid a football resurgence, and HBCU Gameday cameras have captured the turnaround at Johnson C. Smith under head coach Maurice Flowers since his first win in 2022. Season 1 of Brick x Brick showed the Golden Bulls increase their win total from two to seven games, the most at the HBCU in over a decade.

Season 2 follows a currently undefeated JCSU football program as they have gone from upstart to usurper, by beating the defending CIAA champion Virginia Union Panthers at the Irwin Belk Complex in Charlotte, North Carolina in an emotional rollercoaster of a game that wasn’t decided until the final moments of the fourth quarter.

The title of the latest episode, ‘Refuse to Lose’, is about a portion of the team’s mantra that appears throughout the series. After the hard-fought victory, Coach Flowers repeated the “refuse to lose” portion of the mantra a few extra times to emphasize the team’s grit in the win.

“I knew when I heard him repeat it about three extra times that it would be the title of the episode,” said series producer Wali Pitt. “That was the biggest win for Smith in the three years that I’ve been covering them, it was a signature win for the program and a signature episode for the series.”

The Golden Bulls have grabbed the attention of the HBCU football world with their 4-0 start to the 2024 season, and the brick x brick motto has become an integral part of the identity of the team. “like we always say, day by day, brick by brick, just gotta keep going, keep the momentum going,” said all-CIAA linebacker Benari Black during the postgame press conference after the win against VA Union. “But like I said, we’ll celebrate tonight but tomorrow, we’re right back at it,” the Charlotte, North Carolina native continued.

Watch the highlights from one of the fiercest rivalries in all of HBCU football, the Aggie Eagle Classic, where North Carolina Central (NCCU) put up 66 points on its arch rivals, North Carolina A&T. Game recap courtesy of NCCU Athletics.

DURHAM, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University football team got back into the win column in an emphatic way Saturday evening at O’Kelly-Riddick Stadium, upending HBCU football rival North Carolina A&T 66-24 in the Aggie-Eagle Classic.

The Eagles (2-2) snapped a two-game skid and picked up their first home win of 2024.

The Aggies struck on the opening kickoff, when Aaron Harris went the length of the field–100 yards–to give North Carolina A&T a 6-0 lead after a failed PAT.

But NCCU immediately responded, marching 65 yards in eight plays before Walker Harris connected with Joaquin Davis from 14 yards out to give the Eagles a 7-6 lead.

NCAT took a 9-7 lead at the 7:16 mark of the first quarter after Andrew Brown kicked a 27-yard field goal.

That was the Aggies’ last lead of the night.

On the ensuing drive, J’Mari Taylor scampered 66 yards for the touchdown with 5:51 left in the frame, and in the first quarter’s final minute, Harris threw a second touchdown pass–this one a 60-yarder to Markell Quick.

The Eagles led 20-9 after 15 minutes.

Special teams got in on the action early in the second quarter, when Trey Goodridge blocked a punt in the end zone to put the Eagles up 27-9. Taylor added a 5-yard touchdown run at the 7:36 mark to open a 34-9 lead, before the Aggies got another Brown field goal.

Harris added a 2-yard scoring run of his own with 58 seconds left in the half, capping off a 5-play, 75-yard drive to send the Eagles into the locker room with a 40-12 lead.

Harris threw his third touchdown pass of the night, a 6-yarder to Chauncey Spikes, with 5:10 left in the third quarter to give N.C. Central a 46-12 lead. Justin Fomby got the Aggies back on the board with a 3-yard run, before Malcolm Reed got the Eagles defense involved with an 11-yard fumble return at the 1:37 mark of the period.

At that point, NCCU led 53-18.

Javion Martin and Joshua Jones both threw their first career touchdown passes in the second half. Martin’s came at the 1:08 mark of the third quarter, a 46-yarder to Mekhi Wall, and Jones had a 15-yard strike to Aleni Mageo in the final two minutes.

The Eagles will open conference play this coming Saturday, Sept. 28, when they head to Indianapolis, Ind., for the Circle City Classic against Norfolk State. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. ET, and the game will air on ESPNU.

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Sept. 21, 2024) … The 100th HBCU football meeting between Hampton (3-1) and Howard (2-2), affectionately called the Battle of the Real HU was one for the books. Although Hampton never trailed, the game went down to the final few minutes before the Pirates notched a 27-20 win for their eighth consecutive win in the series.

A crowd of 16,813 at Washington, D.C.’s Audi Field saw Hampton score the first two touchdowns. But the Bison battled back to tie the game in the third quarter. Hampton’s Ja’Quan Snipes took control and scored a touchdown late in the third quarter and another midway through the fourth quarter as the Pirates prevailed.

It looked like Hampton might pull away for an easy win.

Following a missed 39-yard field goal attempt in the first quarter by Howard, Hampton starting quarterback Chris Zellous engineered a nine-play, 79-yard drive culminating in a six-yard touchdown pass from Zellous to Tyler Hatcher with 3:51 to go in the first quarter. Brian Csehoski booted the extra point to give Hampton a 7-0 advantage.

Pirate coach Trent Boykin inserted quarterback Malcolm Mays into the line-up in the second quarter. He immediately moved the Pirates 65 yards and, after a fake handoff, rambled 34 yards up the middle for Hampton’s second score. The extra point boosted Hampton’s lead to 14-0 with 10:31 before halftime.

Hampton drove inside the five-yard line midway through the second quarter but came away empty after a fumble. Howard engineered its only drive of the first half and drove 93 yards in seven plays. The Bison scored with 1:51 to go in the half on a trick play when Tolbert pitched the ball to Kasey Hawthorne in an apparent reverse. But Hawthorne tossed a 24-yard pass to an open Richie Ilarraza in the end zone to give Howard its first points of the game making it 14-7 at halftime.

Howard fought back to tie the game midway through the third quarter. The Bison drove 77 yards and had a first-and-goal at the five-yard line. But the Pirate defense stiffened and Hampton’s Xavier Marshall forced a Bison fumble at the one-yard line and Brandon Murphy recovered. On the next possession, Eden James ran 16 yards for a score with 3:04 left in the third quarter to make it 14-14.

Snipes took control for the Pirates. Taking over on the 25-yard line, Snipes broke through the line and dashed 53 yards for a score, putting the Pirates back ahead 21-14 after three quarters. Snipes struck again in the fourth quarter. The Pirates drove 87 yards in nine plays with Snipes finding the end zone on a five-yard run. The extra point attempt failed but Hampton led 27-14.

HBCU football Battle of the Real HU Hampton Howard

Howard wasted no time to mount a comeback. The Bison efficiently moved the ball downfield and capped a 75-yard, 12-play drive when Tolbert ran around end for the score cutting Hampton’s lead to 27-20 with 4:22 to go. Inexplicably, the Bison decided to go for two and the conversion attempt failed, leaving Hampton with a 27-20 lead. Neither team threatened to score in the game’s final minutes. Giving Hampton its eighth straight win in the Battle of the Real HU.

The Pirates open Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) play on Sept. 28 when Hampton travels to Williamsburg to take on William & Mary. Hampton will play its final HBCU football game of the regular season when the travel to Greensboro, NC to face North Carolina A&T at its homecoming on Oct. 19.

The 2024 HBCU football season is in full swing and the HBCU Gameday Original series ‘Brick x Brick with JCSU Football’ is in mid-season form delivering back-to-back episodes on the eve of the biggest Johnson C. Smith University (JCSU) football game in recent memory, when JCSU hosts VA Union in Charlotte, NC on Saturday, Sept 21 at 6 pm.

Brick x Brick began in 2022 as a segment on JCSU football head coach Maurice Flowers’ first win over Elizabeth City State University. From there, HBCU Gameday and JCSU partnered on a documentary of the Golden Bulls’ spring ball program, highlighted by a trip to Bank of America Stadium, home of the Carolina Panthers for a special spring practice. That project bloomed into a five-part series, culminating with an all-access episode where filmmaker Wali Pitt traveled to Fort Lauderdale, FL with JCSU football on their trip to the inaugural Florida Beach Bowl.

Episodes four and five of season two of ‘Brick x Brick’ follow the Golden Bulls to Atlanta for a ‘Business Trip’ against Morehouse and take you behind the scenes of the JCSU football home opener against Lincoln where Smith was looking to ‘Protect the Crib.’

Brick x Brick SzN II | JCSU vs Morehouse | Business Trip

Follow JCSU football as they load the team bus in Charlotte, NC, and head for Atlanta to take on Morehouse College at historic B.T. Harvey Stadium. After a win over Tuskegee in the Red Tails Classic, the Golden Bulls look to prove they can handle business on the road against a tough non-conference opponent.

Brick x Brick SzN II | JCSU vs Lincoln | Protect the Crib

After going 2-0 on the road to start the season, JCSU football returned to Charlotte, NC for its home opener against CIAA foe Lincoln University. The Golden Bulls’ packed the Irwin Belk Complex and showed what type of atmosphere you can expect in Charlotte with a winning football team.

JCSU vs VA Union

The Golden Bulls are 3-0 and welcome the defending CIAA champion Virginia Union (VA Union) Panthers to Uptown Charlotte and the Irwin Belk Complex for a 6 pm kickoff. Union is coming off a tough 33-21 loss to Virginia HBCU rival Hampton and has had a long road to becoming a CIAA football champion.

The Panthers come to Charlotte with an all-CIAA running back and one of the first two HBCU Legacy Bowl selections of 2025. Brigton, NJ native Jada Byers has been one of the top backs in the CIAA for a few seasons and he’s continuing his dominance in 2024 averaging 158 yards per game and scoring five touchdowns on the year.

The Golden Bulls will counter Virginia Union’s steady dose of Jada Byers with the three-headed backfield of Quavaris Crouch, Kamarro Edmunds, and Avante George, who collectively average 164 yards per game.

The JCSU football program’s 3-0 record shows they have gone from rebuilding to resurging. Still, the matchup against VA Union will show if they are already a CIAA championship-caliber team in year three under head coach Maurice Flowers.

The 102nd Aggie Eagle Classic is going down this Saturday in Durham, North Carolina. This is the first time the HBCU football rivals have matched up in Durham since 2018. North Carolina Central University (NCCU) versus North Carolina A&T is one of, if not the biggest rivalry in HBCU Sports, especially in football. The 2024 edition of the Classic is sure to be exciting this year with all of the new faces for both schools this season.

North Carolina Central is looking to continue its two-game win streak over the Aggies, but this year they’ll have to do it with a new quarterback in the command of the offense. Walker Harris is the new starting quarterback for the NCCU Eagles and has the team sitting currently at a 1-2 record. Harris was injured during the Eagles matchup against UNC and has been listed as day-to-day by NCCU HC Trei Oliver.

The Eagles’ two losses have come from an FCS-ranked Elon team of the CAA Conference and the UNC Tar Heels of the ACC. NCCU football’s only win came against Alabama State in the Orange Blossom Classic, the team picked in the preseason to win the SWAC in 2024.

The Aggies are looking to come into O’Kelly-Reddick Stadium and end its current losing streak to the Eagles. This is the first matchup at O’Kelly-Reddick stadium in Durham, NC since 2018, where the Aggies put up a dominating 45-0 win.

The Aggies and Eagles have both faced ACC opponents in their 2024 nonconference schedule, with both schools having promising takeaways from their matchups with big-time FBS schools. North Carolina A&T took a trip to Wake Forest for its season opener and showed glimpses of what their offense can be. The Aggies showed up to Winston-Salem with a solid run game and moved the line of scrimmage up front, creating holes for their talented backfield of Kenji Christian and Wesley Graves. The North Carolina A&T defense also showed signs of being able to stop the run game while making plays on the ball in the air as well.

The Eagles took on a different ACC opponent, the UNC Tar Heels, taking a trip to Chapel Hill, NC, and giving UNC all it could handle for three quarters. The Eagles and their new starting quarterback Walker Harris came out early and proved they could move the ball through the air. While also moving the chains with the run game and scoring a touchdown on the ground on the first possession of the game, playing the Tar Heels close until the 6-minute mark in the 4th quarter. The Eagles had only allowed 17 points in a one-possession game with 3 minutes left in the 3rd when UNC was able to figure out the NCCU schemes on offense and started firing under all cylinders, scoring 28 points in the fourth quarter.

Both schools have shown signs of improvement that should make for an amazing HBCU football matchup on Saturday, Sept. 21 in the 102nd Aggie Eagle Classic at 7 pm.
