As HBCU football gears up for the 2025 season, the ‘Brick x Brick’ rebuild of the Johnson C. Smith University (JCSU) football program continues to be one of the top HBCU storylines. The Golden Bulls are entering year four under head coach Maurice Flowers and are coming off of back-to-back winning seasons for the first time in a decade, with Coach Flowers’ first recruiting class maturing into veteran team leaders. One of those veteran leaders is senior wide receiver Brevin Caldwell, who is already setting the tone for his senior season during the final spring football camp of his career.

The 2024 season was a rollercoaster for JCSU football. The Golden Bulls started 8-0 and quickly became one of the hottest teams in HBCU football, drawing national attention with their dominant defense and explosive offense. However, the team stumbled down the stretch, losing their final two games and narrowly missing both the CIAA championship game and a potential NCAA Division II playoff berth. The late-season heartbreak has only fueled the returning players. Guys like Brevin Caldwell, who knows the Golden Bulls’ 2025 campaign is his last chance to bring a championship back to the Queen City for JCSU.

WATCH: Brick x Brick with JCSU Football | Spring Ball ’25 | First Day Out

The Charlotte, NC native stars in the premiere episode of the new spring season of Brick x Brick with JCSU Football. HBCU Gameday’s behind-the-scenes docuseries has covered the HBCU football program’s rebuild during Maurice Flower’s tenure in Charlotte.

In the mic-’d-up portion of the episode, Caldwell showcases his determination and professional mindset. He gives viewers a glimpse into the work ethic of a top HBCU football player, as he’s one of the first players on the field before practice in the “First Day Out” episode of the series.

HBCU to NFL

“I’m aspiring for a professional opportunity,” said Caldwell on Brick x Brick. “So it’s just being a pro at everything I do, man. The way that I train, the way that I practice, the way that I live, the way I eat. Taking that professional mindset, applying it here while I’m a senior, and just dominate. So that’s all I can do. And then I try to spread that energy to my teammates.”

That drive is a defining trait of the former West Charlotte High School standout, who arrived at JCSU with big goals and has steadily grown into a leader both on and off the field. Since joining the Golden Bulls, Brevin Caldwell has developed into one of the CIAA’s premier receivers. Over the past two seasons, he has posted multiple 100-yard games and has consistently been one of the top targets in the conference thanks to his route discipline, sure hands, and ability to stretch the field.

“I feel like we pieced it together (last year), man. We found ways to beat really good opponents, obviously let two slip away at the very end. But, you know, that’s what this year is for.” Caldwell has some unfinished business on the personal side too, as his omission from the AFCA DII All-America team is also fueling the 6 foot 1, 185 lb receiver during the offseason. “I feel like I missed out on All-American last year. I was AFCA All-Region. One out of eight guys and four guys got selected for All-American. I wasn’t, you know, a part of the cut.”

CIAA’s Best

During his time at JCSU, Caldwell has built a reputation as one of the top wideouts in the conference. Known for his precise route-running and strong hands, he’s been a consistent threat in the Golden Bulls’ offense. In his career, Caldwell has totaled 180 receptions for 2,286 yards and 14 touchdowns. His standout 2024 performance earned him First team All-CIAA honors and Team Offensive MVP.

But this spring, with a new quarterback under center, the stakes—and potential—are even higher. Enter Fort Valley State transfer Kelvin Durham, one of the top Division II HBCU football quarterbacks in the country. The dynamic dual-threat veteran brings a versatile skill set and big-play ability to the JCSU offense. Caldwell and Durham have already begun to develop chemistry. Developing a connection could be the key to unlocking the full potential of the Golden Bulls’ passing attack in 2025.

Brevin Caldwell on Brick x Brick with JCSU Football | Spring Ball ’25 | First Day Out

“I’ve taken it upon myself to hone in on that chemistry. All the hours that aren’t seen behind closed doors. As soon as he got here, he hit me up. And, you know, we’ve been working ever since. He’s a great natural passer, man, the touch on the deep balls. I mean, I don’t think it gets too much better.”

Caldwell’s attitude seems to resonate with his coaches and teammates as well. He sets a standard for what it means to be a senior leader at an HBCU football program.

“This year, you know, especially this spring is just focusing on the little things that I feel like I could have done better last season. Everybody’s trying to fine-tune their game before the fall. But, you know, I’m here on a mission. Like I said, it’s a professional mindset, and so I’m trying to get myself ready for the pro level, you know. And I know taking those little steps, you know, everything every day is our is our motto. That’s how I’m going to get there. ” Caldwell says in the premiere episode of a special four-episode Spring Ball ’25 season of the ‘HBCU Hard Knocks’ style series on HBCU Gameday.

Brick x Brick, produced by Filmmaker and HBCU Gameday Partner Wali Pitt, gives fans an all-access look into the culture, grind, and brotherhood of JCSU football. As Caldwell anchors the first episode, his journey reflects the dedication, resilience, and pride found within the HBCU sports community. New episodes of Brick x Brick with JCSU Football premiere weekly on the HBCUGameday.com homepage, the Gameday app, and the HBCU Gameday YouTube Channel. Brick x Brick will also air on Fox Soul, Sundays at 7 PM as part of on HBCU Gameday’s flagship show on the Fox affiliated network.

Albany State head coach Quinn Gray is on a mission. Last season, the Golden Rams just didn’t finish like he or the team felt they should have. In 2023, they would make it to the SIAC conference championship, where they would fall to Chennis Berry’s Benedict Tigers.

With a hoard of re-aligning, transfers, and coaching changes, the SIAC is virtually wide open this season. Albany State wants to stake its claim on the title by rebuilding and improving the program. With a solid core of veterans, Quinn Gray could be in a position to return Albany State to the pinnacle of the SIAC, which was last reached by Gabe Giardina.

The ASU Coliseum was the site of the Blue & Gold game. It was a festive atmosphere as the university was hosting an open house for visiting families interested in attending the plush southern Georgia campus. With a full squad of cheerleaders and an impressive 346-member band playing, it was the perfect opportunity for the players to display what they had worked on for 15 days.

The first half belonged to the “Dirty Blue” defense. Led by cornerback Deven Foster, the defense thwarted most attempts by the offense. It would lead to the offense only scoring on field goals in the first half. Foster picked off a pass and ran it down to the offense’s one-yard line before being tackled.

Albany State Quinn Gray SIAC
All-SIAC Quarterback Isaiah Knowles

The second half belonged to the offense. All-SIAC quarterback Isaiah Knowles got things in gear, and the offense scored some touchdowns. Uncharacteristically, Quinn Gray had all quarterbacks except Knowles as live targets in the game.

Albany State senior kicker Kyle Wright was spot-on all game. He nailed every field goal attempt and did a great job performing in swirling wind conditions. “Kyle has done a tremendous job for us in the kicking game when it comes down to field goals and putting points on the board when we aren’t able to put the ball in the end zone,” Gray said. “He understands situations and what his role is when it comes down to putting points on the board. We call him Mr. Automatic.”

Gray commended the play of his team as he used the Spring to evaluate the talent and what holes might need to be filled for the Fall. “Defense played a tremendous first half today and rightfully so. We’ve been at each other all spring and, and here in the Blue and Gold game we really just simplified a lot of things and didn’t, really call everything that we could simply because it is on national TV but at the end of the day, we had enough in that we can put on a good show for the folks and then also get the work that we were trying to get, but defense flew around, pretty good,” Gray said.

ASU Defense hones in on quarterback
ASU Defense hones in on quarterback

Gray went on to explain the live quarterbacks in the game. Knowles wore a white jersey to indicate that he was not live, but backups were in play. “We wanted to make the quarterbacks besides Isaiah live because you’re talking about, Jayden Kenney who played his last meaningful snap in high school in fall of 2023. So with that you’re talking about a guy who hadn’t really seen or felt the hit in a year and a half. So we wanted to make those, those two guys live just to see how they react and what they do with the football in terms of decision making. It was fairly good for us obviously there’s some things we need to clean up, but overall I’m happy with the way it turned out most importantly we’re healthy,” Gray said.

Quinn Gray has overhauled his defensive line position with a coach he experienced at both Delaware State and Alcorn State. “Damon Francis came over from, Fort Valley, who was, who was with myself, Coach Cash, and Matt Brown at Alcorn State, back in 2021. Francis has been doing this for the last 30 plus years. His mindset and the way he coaches and the way he teaches our guys has our guys playing with a different mindset in terms of how we attack and I think we did too much thinking versus reacting and attacking last year and I and it’s evident in what you see on the field now,” Gray Concluded

With the era of coaches and players moving around fluidly on all NCAA levels, the landscape of college football has rapidly changed, and that holds true for Division II as well. Gray has a philosophy in dealing with all that is going on. “As the cliche, you gotta focus on you, right? We can’t necessarily focus on what’s going on in and around the SIAC. We can only handle what we’ve got in front of us, and that’s an opportunity for us to get better as a team with our spring season,” Gray concluded.

The annual Circle City Classic will include two new teams when the HBCU battle takes place in September.

Morgan State and Miles College will clash on Sept. 27 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. It marks the first time both teams will play in the longtime HBCU classic. The bands — Purple Marching Machine and the Magnificent Marching Machine — will also join their respective teams for the popular HBCU showdown.

Alice Watson, the president and CEO of Indiana Black Expo, said that it is important “now more than ever to bring HBCU talent and exposure to the Midwest.”

“We hope that alumni and new fans alike will come out to Lucas Oil Stadium to support not only the tradition of the HBCU football game but also celebrate the talented bands,” Watson said in a press release.

In the 2024 campaign, Morgan State finished 6-6 and 3-2 in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play while Miles notched an unprecedented season. The Golden Bears finished 14-3 including a perfect 12-0 mark in Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action. Miles made a second round appearance in the NCAA Division II playoffs and finished with a national ranking for the first time in program history.

This season, former NFL’s Indianapolis Colts player Chris Goode will enter his first year at the helm of the Golden Bears’ program after former head coach Sam Shade departed Miles to become the football coach at Alabama A&M.

North Carolina Central played in the last two editions of the Circle City Classic. Last season, NCCU defeated Norfolk State 37-10.

Florida A&M University (FAMU), one of the top HBCU football programs in the country, has filled a big hole in its football coaching staff by hiring Kenwick Thompson as its new defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. The news was first reported by the Tallahassee Democrat.

Kenwick Thompson Coaching Career

Thompson brings a wealth of experience to the Rattlers, having previously served in coaching roles at various FBS-level institutions. This won’t be Kenwick Thompson’s first foray into HBCU football. He spent 1994-2001 performing various coaching roles at Texas Southern University. Including assistant head coach, Recruiting Coordinator, and Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach.

Most recently, he was the assistant head coach and linebackers coach at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) during the 2023 and 2024 seasons under former NFL quarterback Trent Dilfer. His extensive coaching career includes positions at UNLV, Fresno State, East Carolina, Vanderbilt, San Jose State, California, and Texas Southern. Notably, Thompson was the defensive coordinator at East Carolina in 2016. ?

FAMU’s head coach, James Colzie III, emphasized the importance of hiring a coordinator with a proven track record and strong linebacker coaching skills. “When searching for our defensive coordinator. It was important to bring a coach in who had successful coordinating experience but also a bonafide linebackers coach. Coach ‘Wick’ checks both of those boxes. He’s had success at the FBS and FCS levels.” Colzie told the Democrat.

Thompson expressed enthusiasm about joining FAMU in a recently released statement. “I am honored to be a part of a rich history of excellence on and off the field. I’m excited to get to work contributing to that rich history.” Thompson continued, “I want to thank Coach Colzie for this outstanding opportunity to work with these great young men.”

The Rattlers will conclude their spring practice schedule with the Orange and Green Spring Game on Saturday, April 12, at 4 p.m. They will kick off their 2025 season on August 30 against Howard University in the Orange Blossom Classic at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium.

The Johnson C. Smith University (JCSU) football program has its eyes set on another groundbreaking HBCU football season, as its 2025 football schedule has been finalized. The Golden Bulls are set to begin the season with two historic matchups. One is historic because of where it’s played, and the other, because of who the Golden Bulls are playing against.

A Historic First: HBCU Football at Harvard

Following a 2024 campaign that saw JCSU go 8-0 before falling short of the CIAA championship game. The Golden Bulls look to build on its first back to back winning seasons in over a decade by facing opening the season against Morehouse College in the HBCU Kickoff Classic at Harvard University on August 30, 2025. This will be the first-ever football game played on Harvard’s campus by two HBCU football programs. In 2019, Harvard hosted Howard University in Boston for its first game against an HBCU. A game that has grown into the Truth and Service Classic. A yearly matchup between the Crimson and the Bison at Audi Field in Washington, DC.

Last year, JCSU opened its season at the Red Tails Classic with a nationally televised 21-13 win over Tuskegee University. The next week, JCSU headed down to Atlanta on a short week for a big road win over Morehouse. This season, the Golden Bulls start with Morehouse in its week zero Classic, but instead of a big road game to follow, JCSU football will host the 2024 NCAA Division II runner-up, Valdosta State.

Coach Flowers on historic matchup in Boston

“Well, the 25 golden Bulls schedule, wow, it’s really a competitive one. We’re approaching it knowing that every team on the schedule is going to be better (than last year). We are making sure that we do our part by preparing ourselves to be a better football team. The first game of the season with Morehouse at Harvard Stadium in Boston, Massachusetts, so I mean amazing opportunity that came about from both schools from Morehouse and Johnson C Smith, both have Strong alumni in that area, and so that’s how the game came about and we’re just glad to be able to be the first two HBCUs to play a football game in Massachusetts.”

High-Stakes Home Opener

For its home opener on September 6th, JCSU football hosts NCAA Division II runner-up Valdosta State. The Golden Bulls’ matchup with Valdosta State gives JCSU a prime opportunity to test itself against one of the top DII programs in the nation early in the season. Valdosta State has long been a dominant force in Division II football, including knocking off CIAA champion Virginia Union in the playoffs last year. This will be a critical measuring stick for the Golden Bulls as they aim to build themselves into one of the top HBCU programs and one of the top teams in Division II football.

Coach Flowers on hosting Valdosta

“Our philosophy on scheduling really has grown as we have grown as a football program. We speak often about the process of just doing the things that make you better as an individual on doing the things that make you better as a team and we realize that that becoming a championship program does not happen overnight and so in our process of building the JCSU Football program, we knew that we could not just start scheduling top teams,” said JCSU football head coach Maurice Flowers. As he heads into his fourth season at the helm of HBCU football in Charlotte, NC, Coach Flowers believes his program is finally ready to take on some of the top DII teams in the country. Including one from their own backyard, as JCSU prepares for another spring scrimmage against Wingate University.

HBCU JCSU
JCSU head coach Maurice Flowers with Wingate head coach Rashaan Jordan before 2024 spring scrimmage.
Working with Wingate

“You know Wingate was just coming off of the schedule when we were hired and we were asked to renew, but we knew our program wasn’t ready at that time so what we wanted to do was make sure we were building for that. And so that’s what we did and like even the scrimmage with Wingate last year came at that time when our program had been growing to be able to compete with better teams. And Wingate is a team that is gonna compete for the championship in the region every year. Wingate is going to be a top 25 team, Wingate is going to be a team that’s going to go to the playoffs and so you know that’s those are measuring stick opportunities. So that’s what we’re taking the Wingate scrimmage as is a measuring stick opportunity.

“The game with Valdosta State, you don’t step out there in that deep water if you don’t feel like you’re ready, and so, when I say that deep water, that means to play against a team that is a perennial division II power. When you look at division II championship programs that’s one of the first two teams that you look at for the last couple of decades and so you know great opportunity for our program and then for our university to be able to host the game with them on campus so we’re looking forward to it.”

Building on a Historic 2024 Season

JCSU’s status as a true championship contender was solidified during the 2024 season when the Golden Bulls made history with an unprecedented 8-0 start. Their success garnered national attention, leading to multiple features on ESPN’s College GameDay. The program’s resurgence has also been chronicled in the HBCU Gameday Original series Brick x Brick. Which has been covering the program since Coach Flowers’ first win in 2022. The “HBCU Hard Knocks” series provides an inside look at the team’s journey, challenges, and triumphs. The documentary-style series resonated with fans in the HBCU football landscape and is now aired nationally on Sundays at 7 pm on Fox Soul as part of HBCU Gameday’s flagship weekly show on the network.

A Season of High Expectations

With the momentum of their historic 2024 season propelling them forward, JCSU enters 2025 with aspirations of a championship run. The two high-profile matchups to begin the season provide an opportunity for the Golden Bulls to showcase their brand of football on a national stage. Whether making history at Harvard or facing off against one of Division II’s elite programs. JCSU is prepared to prove it on the gridiron in 2025.

Gregg Williams brings decades of NFL experience to Tennessee State, having served as a defensive coordinator and head coach at multiple NFL franchises. Most notably, he was the defensive coordinator for the New Orleans Saints when they secured victory in Super Bowl XLIV. His coaching resume also includes stints with the Buffalo Bills (head coach, 2001-2003), Washington, the Tennessee Titans, and the Cleveland Browns.

Williams’ aggressive defensive schemes have long been recognized for their effectiveness. He previously worked in Nashville as the Titans’ defensive coordinator, making this return to the city a homecoming of sorts. “Gregg Williams, who’s an all-time NFL coach and defensive coordinator, has done a great job wherever he’s gone,” said Barlow. “He was a defensive coordinator here in Nashville for the Tennessee Titans, and we play in that same stadium. And he’s coming.”

Barlow and Williams have a well-established professional relationship, having worked together during the 2023 XFL season with the D.C. Defenders. Barlow was the head coach, and Williams served as the defensive coordinator, helping the team reach the XFL Championship Game. Their collaboration was highly successful, making this reunion at Tennessee State an exciting prospect for the program.

“I think it’ll be good for our student-athletes just to be able to learn and hear from him,” Barlow told Mosley in an exclusive interview. “Greg is one of the smartest guys I’ve ever been around from a football standpoint. His intelligence, his knowledge, just the things that he knows about the game—we’ve learned a lot from him over the years. Coach is also a really good coordinator.”

Williams is expected to officially take over his role following the conclusion of the UFL season. Where he is currently coaching. “We just got to let them finish the product off that we built with this team [Defenders],” Barlow added. “So our guys are staying back [in Washington]. And then at the [UFL] championship, June 14, after they win that, they’ll be heading their way here to Tennessee State.”

A Bright Future for TSU Football

Tennessee State University is poised to continue elevating its HBCU football performance, with Williams now leading the defense. His experience and proven track record at collegiate and professional levels are invaluable to the Tigers’ program. Reggie Barlow replaces Eddie George as head coach, who departed for Bowling Green after leading the HBCU to one of its most successful seasons in recent history. Tennessee State will open its 2025 season at the John Merritt Classic against North Carolina A&T on August 30. It’s a game that will mark the beginning of an exciting new era for TSU under the leadership of Barlow and Williams.

The Michael Vick era of Norfolk State football is off and running. The Spartans completed their first spring practice of 2025, marking an important milestone in Coach Vick’s HBCU football career on the sideline.

“It was great to be out here playing some football,” Vick said. “The players had a lot of energy; they were enthused. They were just ready to come out here and compete, and they did a real good job of that. We just have to keep getting better every day; that’s the message.” Attending the final stretch of the practice, media outlets received their first peak at some of the Spartans’ elite newcomers. Norfolk State bolstered its roster with 30 additions on National Signing Day, bringing in a healthy mix of prestigious transfers and local high school standouts.

Spartans speak

Offensive lineman Guan Price II, an offseason transfer from Hampton, said that his head coach has transitioned well as a leader. “Ultimately, he’s a football great,” Price said. “We have to respect him, but he’s made us feel like we’re family. He’s very welcoming, and he always takes time to talk to us.”

Linebacker Khalib Gilmore emphasized the Spartans’ step-by-step approach to building an HBCU football foundation. “It’s one day at a time for us,” Gilmore said. “We’re looking at it as quarters: we just finished our first quarter, spring training, getting into shape. Now we’re going into our second quarter. We’re not looking at anything ahead of this quarter.”

USF transfer quarterback Israel Carter felt right at home in his first spring practice with his new team. The California native poured in praise for his head coach, learning from one of the best athletes to ever play the position. “It’s everything a young quarterback wishes for,” Carter said. “I’m following his path; he led the way for us. All I’m trying to do is build off what he did and implement my game into that.

Michael Vick and the Spartans will hold 14 official practices leading up to the highly anticipated spring game, slated for Saturday, Apr. 19. Fans can purchase tickets to the event here or in-person at the NSU Ticket Office.

Delaware State football is on a mission. Under new head coach DeSean Jackson, the Hornets are trying to build a program that can compete at the highest level. But building something great doesn’t happen overnight, and former NFL star, Hugh Douglas, made sure the players understood what it takes for success in HBCU football.

During a recent practice, Douglas, a Central State University legend and former first-round NFL draft pick, spoke to the Hornets about the importance of unity and discipline. His message was simple but powerful: “Rome wasn’t built in a day.”

Douglas talked about his journey from a small Division II HBCU to becoming an NFL Pro Bowler. He explained that it all started with building a strong foundation and paying attention to the little things. He stressed that Delaware State’s players have a unique opportunity because they have good coaches with NFL experience guiding them.

Words from a pro

“It’s like building a house,” Douglas told the team. “You start with the foundation. This is the foundation. And then you build from there.”

Douglas didn’t hold back about what he saw during practice. He noticed players yelling and pointing fingers when things went wrong. That, he said, was not the way to grow. Instead, he urged them to pick each other up, pat each other on the back, and get ready for the next play.

“You all are brothers. Every dude you see out here right now, you’re gonna walk with them for the rest of your life,” he said. “Pick each other up, man. If you don’t hear nothing else I say today, listen to that.”

Douglas made sure to emphasize that success doesn’t come from shortcuts. “You can’t cut corners and expect to be great,” he added. “The NFL is watching, and they want to see players who are disciplined, committed, and willing to put in the work.”

He also reminded the Hornets about the importance of staying focused on the big picture. “This is just the beginning,” he said. “You’ve got good coaches, you’ve got talent, and you’ve got a chance to be special. But it starts with the details.”

Douglas’s speech wasn’t just motivational—it was a blueprint for success. His journey from Division II HBCU Central State to the NFL showed Delaware State’s players that their dreams are possible if they work hard and stay disciplined. And with DeSean Jackson at the helm, the Hornets are putting in the work to lay a solid foundation.

The team still has a long way to go, but the message was clear: Building something special starts with unity and discipline. If the Hornets can master that, the sky’s the limit.

In the ever-evolving world of HBCU football, Tennessee State University made a bold move to continue its upward trajectory by naming Reggie Barlow as its 23rd head football coach. Barlow, a former Super Bowl champion and seasoned HBCU leader, steps into a role recently vacated by Eddie George, who departed TSU for Bowling Green following a landmark 2024 season that saw the Tigers reach the FCS playoffs for the first time in over a decade.

Standing before alumni, fans, students, and media in Nashville, Barlow’s message was clear: he’s here to build, to serve, and to win.

“This is a beginning of a new Tennessee State Day,” he said. “God has given us this day to use as we will… and we’re going to use it to move forward.”

Barlow brings a wealth of HBCU experience with him, both as a player and a coach. He starred at Alabama State University before carving out a successful NFL career. He later returned to the HBCU ranks as head coach at both Alabama State and Virginia State, earning a reputation for molding disciplined, competitive teams. His most recent stint came in the professional ranks with the DC Defenders, where he also built a coaching staff filled with TSU alumni and connections.

Tennessee State, HBCU

That deep understanding of HBCU culture and community is what made Barlow’s hiring resonate so strongly at a time when Tennessee State is striving to reaffirm its identity in the HBCU landscape. During the press conference, Athletic Director Dr. Mikki Allen emphasized that Barlow was chosen for more than just his resume.

“He believes in what we’re doing here at Tennessee State University. He believes in this city. He believes in the fan base. And he believes in his ability to continue our momentum,” Allen said.

The momentum Allen referenced was built under Eddie George, the former NFL star who led the Tigers to a resurgent 2024 campaign. In a heartfelt message announcing his move to Bowling Green, George expressed mixed emotions, calling his time at TSU “transformative” and acknowledging the unique impact of coaching at an HBCU.

“Tennessee State and the HBCU experience taught me more about leadership, culture, and tradition than I ever imagined,” George said.

Barlow’s mission now is to expand on that foundation.

“We’re going to recruit,” he promised. “We’re going to get good players, good coaches. We’re going to support all sports. You’ll see the football team at volleyball games, basketball games—we’re part of the whole TSU experience.”

With a legacy of HBCU success behind him and a community eager to maintain its place in the national spotlight, Reggie Barlow begins his tenure not as a replacement, but as the next chapter in TSU’s storied history.

Delaware State University’s football program is getting a fresh start under new head coach DeSean Jackson. With new energy, accountability, and a determination to build something special, Jackson and the Hornets are ready to make their mark on HBCU football. Showing fans and players that he means business.

The practice was loud and intense, with coaches and players fully locked in. It was the kind of energy that Delaware State football hasn’t seen in a long time. Jackson, known for his electrifying playmaking ability during his NFL career, is now trying to transfer that to the Hornets’ football program.

Culture is changing

“I like the energy so far. You can see a lot of guys that are hungry for change, and the culture is changing,” Jackson said. “It’s just breaking old habits. A lot of guys are used to it being a certain way in past years. I don’t continue to try to talk about the past, but we have to address the elephant in the room. Guys are holding themselves accountable. They’re being asked to do things they’ve never done before.”

DeSean Jackson is fully embracing his new role in HBCU football, even if the transition from player to coach comes with challenges. He acknowledges that one of the biggest challenges is just getting used to everything involved in coaching.

“The biggest challenge I think for me is just getting acclimated with everything… Just not letting it be overwhelming.” Jackson seems determined to take things one step at a time, learning as he goes and keeping his passion for the game alive. “I wake up every day, and I love it, I enjoy it, I never thought being a player and playing all these years that I would be a head coach. But, you know, so far so good. I’m waking up rejuvenated and just giving back to these young men.”

The first open practice featured some explosive moments, particularly from HBCU transfer Kobe Boykin, out of Jackson State, and returning player Marqui Gillis. Boykin and Gillis both showed flashes of their potential. Jackson praised their efforts, saying, “Kobe Boykin showed up and showed out. Marqui Gillis is doing a great job. We’ve got talent here to work with.”

Speed and unpredictability

Jackson’s offensive philosophy, guided by offensive coordinator Nemo Washington, is built around speed and unpredictability. “He’s going to catch a lot of defenses off guard. I think we’ll score a lot of points; we’ll have a lot of yards. The biggest thing is keeping defenses off guard,” Jackson said.

One interesting twist during the practice was the fact that players were practicing without numbers on their jerseys. That made it difficult to identify players, but the energy and effort were unmistakable.

Earlier in the week, the Delaware State team also heard from motivational speaker Inky Johnson and NFL star Hugh Douglas before practice. Johnson is known for his powerful messages of perseverance and leadership. Hugh Douglas, a Central State University legend and former Philadelphia Eagle, brought his own words of encouragement to the team as a former HBCU player himself.

HBCU DeSean Jackson Delaware State

Jackson’s commitment to building a strong team culture is clear. He understands that discipline and passion must go hand in hand. “Allowing the players to be their self… You gotta manage them as well too because they’re young men. So, at times they get out of hand, but you like the passion.” His approach encourages players to be themselves while maintaining control and accountability.

While DeSean Jackson acknowledges there is still a lot of work to be done, he remains optimistic about the future. “Today was the first day we moved in the right direction. Every day you’re going to build, but I think today we really took a step. The offense made some big plays, but defensively, we still have work to do.”

In response to circulating rumors about his potential appointment as head coach of Tennessee State University’s (TSU) HBCU football program, Jeff Fisher has firmly denied any such intentions. He stated, “Let’s clear this up right now; there was never interest by either party regarding the coaching vacancy at Tennessee State.” Fisher further emphasized his dedication to his current position: “I am 100 percent committed to my current job as commissioner of Arena Football.”

Jeff Fisher’s career in football

Jeff Fisher boasts a distinguished coaching career in the National Football League (NFL) over two decades. He began as an interim head coach for the Houston Oilers in 1994, a team that later became the Tennessee Titans. Fisher led the Titans to a Super Bowl XXXIV appearance in 1999, narrowly losing to the St. Louis Rams. He remained with the franchise until 2010, becoming the winningest coach in its history. In 2012, Fisher took the helm of the St. Louis Rams (later the Los Angeles Rams), coaching there until 2016. After a brief hiatus, he returned to coaching in 2022 with the Michigan Panthers of the United States Football League (USFL), now known as the American Football 1 (AF1) league, where he continues to contribute his expertise.

These rumors originated from a tweet by W. Keith Friedman, who identified himself on X.com (formerly Twitter) as a freelance journalist. However, investigations into Friedman’s credentials reveal a lack of verifiable journalistic work or affiliations, casting doubt on the legitimacy of his claims. This incident underscores the growing concern over misinformation spread by unverified sources on social media platforms.

Tennessee State University is actively seeking a successor to Eddie George, who recently accepted the head coaching position at Bowling Green. Among the potential candidates is Reggie Barlow, the head coach of the D.C. Defenders in the United Football League, known for his extensive experience and success in HBCU football.

This episode reminds us of the importance of verifying information through credible sources, especially regarding prominent figures and their interactions with HBCU institutions. It highlights the necessity for due diligence and reliance on established news outlets when assessing the validity of such claims.

According to a recent report by FootballScoop.com, Reggie Barlow has emerged as the leading candidate to succeed Eddie George as the head football coach at Tennessee State University (TSU). Barlow’s extensive experience as both an NFL player and an HBCU football coach. Coupled with his recent success in the XFL, positions him as a strong contender for the role.?

NFL Playing Career

Barlow’s professional football journey began when the Jacksonville Jaguars drafted him in the fourth round of the 1996 NFL Draft. His NFL career spanned eight seasons, during which he played as a wide receiver and return specialist for the Jacksonville Jaguars, Oakland Raiders, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Over 82 career games, Barlow recorded 39 receptions for 522 yards and one touchdown. ?

Barlow’s most significant contributions came on special teams. He returned 80 kickoffs for 1,855 yards, averaging 23.2 yards per return, and scored one kickoff return touchdown. Additionally, he returned 158 punts for 1,639 yards, averaging 10.4 yards per return, and scored two punt return touchdowns.

In 1998, Barlow led the NFL in punt return yards, amassing 555 yards on 43 returns, and was named a Pro Bowl alternate. His performance that season remains among the top single-season punt return yardage totals in league history. ? Barlow’s tenure with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers culminated in a Super Bowl XXXVII victory, earning him a championship ring.

In 2013, Barlow was inducted into the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Hall of Fame in recognition of his collegiate achievements.

Coaching Career and HBCU Contributions

Transitioning from player to coach, Barlow returned to his alma mater, Alabama State University, where he served as quarterbacks coach before being promoted to head coach from 2007 to 2014. He achieved a 49-42 record during his tenure, mentoring players like Super Bowl champion Tarvaris Jackson.

In 2016, Reggie Barlow took the helm at Virginia State University (VSU), another prominent HBCU football program. Under his leadership, the Trojans experienced significant success, notably an undefeated regular season in 2017—the first in the school’s history. This achievement led to a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Championship, and Barlow was honored as the CIAA Coach of the Year. Over six seasons, he compiled a commendable 34-16 overall record at VSU.

XFL Achievements

Barlow’s coaching prowess extended to the professional ranks when he accepted the head coach position with the DC Defenders of the XFL in 2022. In the 2023 season, he led the Defenders to a league-best 9-1 record. Earning recognition as the XFL Coach of the Year. His team excelled offensively, leading the league in rushing yards (1,490) and rushing touchdowns (18). Defensively, the Defenders were formidable, ranking second in sacks (29) and first in defensive touchdowns.

Potential Transition to Tennessee State University

Should Barlow assume the head coaching role at TSU, he would be succeeding another NFL luminary, Eddie George. George, a former Tennessee Titans running back and Heisman Trophy winner, brought significant attention to TSU during his tenure. Barlow’s appointment would continue the tradition of integrating high-profile NFL experience into the program. His deep roots in HBCU football and his professional playing and coaching experience make him a fitting choice to lead TSU’s football program into its next chapter.?

Reggie Barlow’s career trajectory showcases a consistent commitment to excellence on the field and from the sidelines. His potential move to Tennessee State University underscores the institution’s dedication to fostering a competitive and dynamic football program within the HBCU community beyond Eddie George’s tenure.

The hopes and dreams of student-athletes often depend on how well they can perform on their direct opportunity to impress professional scouts. For FAMU, it is known to have one of the largest Pro Days of any HBCU. This week would be no different. With about 16 scouts representing both the NFL and CFL. The showcase commenced on Ken Riley Field at Bragg Memorial Stadium.

In all, 14 Rattlers were weighed, measured, jumped, ran, shuttled, and drilled their way through the workout. It is the interview of a lifetime. Most football players dream of making it to the NFL, and Pro Day is the opportunity to see if the athletes are as advertised.

One player who helped his stock with a good Pro Day was on hand to cheer on his former teammates. Now, with the New England Patriots, Terrell Jennings stood on the sideline as encouragement for the auditioning Rattlers.

“Your job is to put on a great show for the scouts out here and make a lot of money.” Jennings said. “It feels good, man, to see I’m putting my family in a better position and gonna continue to do that as I continue on my journey on in the league. It feels good to see all my hard work is paying off and it’s still gonna pay off because I’m still putting the work to this day.”

The top FAMU players on the radars of the scouts were Kendall Bohler (defensive back), Jalen Goss (offensive lineman), Jamari Gassett (wide receiver), and Daniel Richardson (quarterback). However, much like the past, the scouts are there to recruit talent. Professional scouts are given much more credit for finding a “diamond in the rough” than they are for obvious professional prospects. For HBCU athletes, Pro Day offers the opportunity to audition in the same way that the top players experience in the NFL combine.

Big opportunity

FAMU head coach James Colzie III watched closely as his players with exhausted eligibility went through the gauntlet of drills and prodding. “You’ve got 15 or 16 NFL teams and two CFL teams. It’s an amazing opportunity for these guys, Colzie said. “It’s a credit to the guys we’ve had in the past that have come from this program and have flourished at the NFL level. There’s an opportunity. The reason these scouts are here is primarily because of what these guys have done in their careers and what the guys in the past have done,”

Jennings complimented the skill level in HBCU football. “I say HBCU football is good football as well. Football on the next level, it may be a little faster, but other than that. The guys on the HBCU level have a good chance of playing in the NFL and can play in the NFL because as you can see you got Markquese Bell, and Xavier Smith, and a couple other guys. Those guys are from my school, but it’s a lot of guys out here balling in the NFL right now. So you can’t just shut them out and I feel like everybody can ball on every level. It’s just about the right person to see you.”

Tuskegee football announced Wednesday that former SWAC championship-winning player and Lane assistant John Carter will be the Golden Tigers’ linebackers coach for the 2025 HBCU football season.

After serving two years as the Dragons’ linebackers coach and video coordinator, Carter comes to Tuskegee. Lane’s linebackers’ group played a key part in the team’s success defensively. Last season, the Dragons’ defense tallied 644 total tackles, 65 tackles for loss and 23 sacks. The unit also forced eight fumbles while recovering seven and intercepted six passes.

In 2023, Carter anchored a defensive group that registered 633 total tackles, with 68 tackles for loss and 20 sacks. The unit also forced six interceptions and seven fumbles.

Before Lane, Carter — a former Grambling State football standout — gained a wealth of experience from other high school and collegiate stops in his career. Those include serving as the assistant defensive line coach at SWAC HBCU Texas Southern, helping the Tigers elevate to No. 2 in the FCS in interceptions.

Carter served as the defensive coordinator and strength and conditioning coach at Franklin High School. At Franklin, Carter’s defense led Class 2A in takeaways. He also served as the defensive coordinator at Pro-Vision Academy, helping the team capture its first state championship in program history.

The Houston native is no stranger to success. He gained recognition from the community as he was responsible for mentoring two high school All-Americans and multiple Division I prospects.

Before he entered the coaching ranks, Carter played for GSU from 2005 to 2009, helping the program secure a SWAC title and Black College Football national championship in 2005 under the leadership of Melvin Spears and a second SWAC title in 2008 under Rod Broadway’s leadership.

Former Tennessee State defensive coordinator Brandon Fisher is following Eddie George to Bowling Green to serve as the Falcons defensive coordinator. The news of Fisher departing the Nashville-based HBCU was first reported by FCS Football Central’s Zach McKinnell. Fisher, the son of former NFL’s Tennessee Titans and Los Angeles Rams coach Jeff Fisher, served as the Tigers’ defensive coordinator for four seasons under George’s leadership.

Fisher released a statement on X — formerly known as Twitter — confirming that he was joining George’s staff.

“Big Blue. 4 years went by fast. It was truly an honor. To the players – only we know what happened inside the walls of our locker room. Your endurance and perseverance was unmatched in college football – and you walked away champions. Thank you for always being THE STANDARD!,” Fisher wrote in the message.

Defense played a critical role in Tennessee State’s improvement on the gridiron as the HBCU increased its win totals each season in the four-year span. In the 2024 campaign, TSU finished 9-4, secured a portion of the Big South/Ohio Valley Conference championship, and earned a spot in the FCS playoffs for the first time since 2013.

Even more, TSU finished the 2024 season fourth in the Big South-OVC in scoring defense, allowing 24.2 points per game. The Tigers also ranked third in total defense (337.5 yards allowed per game) while leading the league in passing yards allowed (189.5) per contest.

Fisher played college football at Montana as a linebacker. He later transitioned into coaching with the elder Fisher, serving in roles with the Titans and Rams. After acquiring some NFL coaching experience, he later coached at Southern Utah and Auburn.

Bowling Green hired George on March 9. George led the Tigers to a 24-22 record in four seasons and the program’s first Big South-OVC title since 1999.

Now, Fisher joins Eddie George’s staff on a Bowling Green team that finished 7-6 last season, ranked fourth in total defense (333.3 yards) and scoring defense in the Mid-American Conference.

Carson Vinson, a standout HBCU football offensive tackle from Alabama A&M University, has been making big strides in his pursuit of an NFL career. Standing at an imposing 6-foot-7 and weighing 314 pounds, Vinson’s physical attributes have garnered attention from scouts and analysts alike. After standout performances at the Senior Bowl and NFL Combine. Vinson participated in the pro day with Alabama football, one of the top NFL-producing programs in the country. Giving scouts a more intimate look at one of HBCU football’s best alongside some of the top prospects in the 2025 NFL draft.

Collegiate Career at Alabama A&M

Vinson’s tenure at Alabama A&M was marked by consistency and excellence. As a four-year starter at left tackle, he anchored the Bulldogs’ offensive line, participating in 48 career starts. His performance in the 2024 season earned him First-Team All-SWAC honors. Solidifying his status as one of the best in HBCU football.

Senior Bowl Performance

Vinson’s invitation to the 2025 Senior Bowl allowed him to showcase his skills against top-tier talent. Throughout the practices, he impressed observers with his physicality and technique. “I’m not some charity case, just happy to be here.” Vinson told reporters after the first day of practice at the Reese’s Senior Bowl. “One big thing was my competition and my weight… And I came here and weighed in at a good weight, and that brings confidence. And when you have to strengthen your focus and strengthen your hands when you come here to basically compete against the best. So it was great to show NFL scouts what my skill set was.”

NFL Combine Results

At the NFL Scouting Combine, Vinson continued to display his athleticism and strength.

 • 40-yard dash: 5.12 seconds
 • Vertical jump: 28.5 inches
 • Broad jump: 9 feet 3 inches
 • Bench press: 24 reps
 • Three-cone drill: 7.85 seconds

Draft Projections

Analysts have noted Vinson’s potential as a developmental tackle in the NFL. His size, length, and athleticism position him well for the next level. While some projections have listed him as the 37th offensive lineman, suggesting a sixth-round selection. His recent performances could elevate him to a mid-round pick. Jordan Reid, former NCCU quarterback turned NFL analyst, reported, “Scouts were complimentary after his performance at the Senior Bowl and Combine with mid-round grades.”

Participation in Alabama’s Pro Day

In a strategic move to further elevate his visibility, Carson Vinson participated in the University of Alabama’s Pro Day on March 19, 2025. This event attracted a significant number of NFL scouts, coaches, and general managers, providing Vinson with a broader platform to demonstrate his capabilities. His decision to work out at a larger program’s pro day underscores a growing trend among HBCU players seeking increased exposure with NFL scouts.

HBCU Representation at Pro Days

Vinson’s participation at Alabama football’s Pro Day highlights the need to increase visibility for HBCU athletes who want to hear their names called at the NFL Draft. By attending pro days at larger programs, these players can demonstrate their skills to more scouts and get more one-on-one time with pro evaluators. Giving them a chance to form a personal connection with NFL decision-makers beyond just the bullet points of individual measurables. This approach is a strategic effort to bridge the exposure gap between HBCU athletes and those from more prominent programs. Potentially improving their draft prospects.

Carson Vinson’s journey from Alabama A&M to the cusp of an NFL career. Speaks to the determination and strategic planning of HBCU football players looking to go pro. His collegiate achievements and strong performances at the Senior Bowl and NFL Combine have positioned him as a notable prospect in the 2025 NFL Draft. But Vinson continues to leverage opportunities like Alabama’s Pro Day to further his chances of advancing his career to the next level. A process that future HBCU athletes may follow.

According to a report by On3sports, Tennessee State defensive lineman Eriq George, son of former Tennessee State head coach and Heisman Trophy winner Eddie George, has decided to leave the Nashville, Tennessee, HBCU and enter the transfer portal.

Eriq George’s Collegiate Career at TSU

Standing 6 feet 2 inches and weighing 280 pounds, Eriq George emerged as a formidable presence in HBCU football over the past two years. In the 2024 season, George finished with 57 tackles, 5.5 sacks, and a forced fumble, leading the team with 12.5 tackles for loss and showcasing his ability to disrupt opposing offenses. His performance earned him second-team All-Big South-OVC honors.

High School Recruitment and Commitment to TSU

Before his collegiate career, Eriq attended Montgomery Bell Academy in Nashville, Tennessee. His decision to commit to Tennessee State was influenced by the opportunity to play under the guidance of his father, Eddie George, who was appointed TSU’s head coach in April 2021.

Eddie George’s Transition to Bowling Green University

In March 2025, Eddie George accepted the head coaching position at Bowling Green State University (BGSU), marking a return to Ohio, where he reached legendary status as a Heisman Trophy-winning running back at Ohio State. His tenure at Tennessee State ended with a 24-22 record over four seasons, including leading the Tigers to their first FCS playoff appearance since 2013.

Speculations on Eriq George’s Transfer to BGSU

Following his father’s move, speculation has naturally begun about Eriq’s potential transfer to BGSU to continue his football career under his father’s mentorship. A move that would not only reunite the father-son duo but likely bolster BGSU’s defensive line with proven talent. On March 19th, Eqiq posted on his x.com account that he had received an offer from Bowling Green. Adding a layer of validity to the speculation of the father-son reunion in Ohio.

BGSU’s Defensive Line Roster Movements

BGSU has been active in the transfer portal, enhancing its defensive front. Notably, redshirt freshman defensive lineman Marcus Moore, who stands at 6-foot-3 and weighs 310 pounds, committed to the Falcons. BGSU has also secured commitments from defensive linemen KJ Brown and Ashton Yeager for the 2025 season. The program has experienced departures at the position as well. Including defensive lineman Bam Booker entering the transfer portal.

Eriq George’s exit from TSU and the possibility of reuniting with his father at BGSU present an intriguing storyline. Especially as he continues to develop into an NFL prospect. As the situation develops, the HBCU community and college football enthusiasts alike await official announcements regarding Eriq’s next steps.

The landscape of HBCU football is shifting after Eddie George departed from Tennessee State University (TSU). Standout linebacker Sanders Ellis has entered the NCAA transfer portal, according to a social media post from Pete Nakos of On3sports. This development follows George’s exit from TSU after accepting the head coaching position at Bowling Green State University.

Sanders Ellis: A Rising Defensive Star

Sanders Ellis, a Nashville native, emerged as a defensive force in his freshman year at Tennessee State University. His 2024 season statistics are a testament to his defensive prowess:

 • Tackles: 86
 • Tackles for Loss: 15.5
 • Sacks: 2.5
 • Pass Deflections: 2
 • Fumbles Recovered: 3

These impressive numbers earned Ellis a finalist spot for the prestigious Jerry Rice Award, recognizing the top freshman at the FCS level.

Eddie George’s Departure and Its Impact

Eddie George, a former Heisman Trophy winner and NFL standout, served as TSU’s head coach for four seasons. Under his leadership, the Tigers clinched a share of the OVC-Big South Conference championship in 2024 and made an appearance in the NCAA Division I Football Championship. George’s contributions were acknowledged as he was named the Big South-Ohio Valley Conference Coach of the Year and was the runner-up for the Eddie Robinson National Coach of the Year award.

George’s decision to transition to Bowling Green was influenced by multiple factors, including financial challenges at Tennessee State University and his aspirations for long-term coaching at a higher level. He expressed mixed emotions about leaving the HBCU community, acknowledging the systemic underfunding at TSU and other public, land-grant HBCUs.

“Not everything was great, and that’s ok,” said Eddie George to the Tennessean. “It allowed me to grow and be a part of my sport again and it really challenged me as a man through and through. My love for this school, this institution, extends beyond what you could ever imagine for affording me this opportunity.

Potential Reunion at Bowling Green

Ellis’s entry into the transfer portal opens up the possibility of reuniting with Coach George at Bowling Green. Such a move would bolster the Falcons’ defensive lineup and provide Ellis with continuity under a coach familiar with his capabilities. Since announcing his entry in the transfer portal, Ellis has announced two FBS offers from Purdue and Virginia Tech. Signaling that he may be moving onto opportunities outside of his relationship with Eddie George.

Eddie George’s and Sanders Ellis’s departure from TSU highlights the challenges and opportunities within HBCU football. As Ellis explores new avenues for his athletic career, the prospect of rejoining his former coach at Bowling Green remains a storyline to watch, reflecting the interconnected nature of coaching decisions and player movements in college football.

The 2025 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) men’s basketball tournament has begun in Norfolk, Virginia, and the host HBCU, the Norfolk State Spartans, secured a hard-fought victory against the Maryland-Eastern Shore Hawks. The game at the Norfolk Scope Arena saw the top-seeded Spartans narrowly avoid an upset, edging out the Hawks in a contest that kept fans on the edge of their seats. Adding to the excitement of the evening was the presence of Michael Vick, the newly appointed head football coach of Norfolk State University. Vick, a native of Newport News, Virginia, and a former NFL quarterback renowned for his electrifying playing style was seen sitting courtside, fervently supporting the Spartans.

Statistics 1 2 OT Total

Vick’s journey to this point has been one of football’s most remarkable stories. Born and raised in the Hampton Roads area, he first gained national attention as a standout quarterback at Virginia Tech, leading the Hokies to the BCS National Championship Game in 2000. His collegiate success propelled him to the NFL, where he was selected first overall by the Atlanta Falcons in the 2001 draft. During his 13-season career, Vick earned four Pro Bowl selections and became the league’s all-time leader in quarterback rushing yards, “redefining the term dual-threat quarterback.”

Vick’s new challenge

In December 2024, Michael Vick embraced a new challenge by stepping into the role of head football coach at Norfolk State University. This appointment marked a homecoming for Vick, allowing him to give back to the community that had been instrumental in his development. His hiring has invigorated the culture of HBCU football and has injected optimism into the Spartans’ fan base, with many anticipating a revitalization of the MEAC football program under his leadership.

During the first-round MEAC tourney game, Vick expressed his enthusiasm about being part of the Norfolk State community. “It’s amazing,” Vick said. “I’m a part of the Norfolk State culture now, so I felt it was only right to come and sit courtside. We’re winning, most importantly, but the atmosphere is amazing, and I’m just excited to be part of the Norfolk State tradition and culture.” Vick told Marc Davis of WTKR News 3 in Hampton Roads, VA.

“This has been fun, to be acclimated and back involved in football, coaching, having the team that I get to coach for days on end is the most exciting thing that I’ve encountered in a long time since playing the game,” Vick continued.

Vick’s presence at the MEAC tournament underscores the unity and mutual support among the athletic programs in the HBCU sports world. His engagement with the basketball team shows his commitment to fostering a cohesive athletic community at Norfolk State, and his presence is likely to inspire student-athletes across all sports.

Vick’s first Spring

As Norfolk State’s football team prepares for the upcoming HBCU football season, the anticipation surrounding Michael Vick’s impact continues to build. His unique blend of professional experience and personal resilience positions him as a transformative figure capable of guiding the Spartans to new heights.

“We have the opportunity to grow as a team,” Vick said when asked about starting his first spring practices in Norfolk. “Unfortunately, everybody can’t make the team so it’s going to be competition at the highest level and we’ve got to evaluate, but at the same time we get to finally get a chance to touch on one another, have a chance to hit and put forth that best effort.”

“There’s a lot of rules and regulations, there’s a lot of things you have to pay attention to and I get it, but being a first-time head coach, I’ve got to keep my head on a swivel and understand what’s happening around me. It’s been amazing. It’s been a good time.”

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Bethune-Cookman Football is set to begin its third season of the Raymond Woodie Jr. era with a challenging 2025 football schedule that includes five home contests at Daytona Stadium, six away games, concluding with the annual Florida Blue Florida Classic matchup against its fiercest HBCU football rival, the Florida A&M Rattlers.

The Wildcats will open the 2025 football schedule on August 30 at Pitbull Stadium against Florida International. The last matchup between the Wildcats and the Panthers occurred in 2014 when B-CU claimed a 14-12 win over the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) opponent – the second of its kind in as many years against the Panthers. The Panthers are looking for a fresh start under new head coach Willie Simmons. Before spending the 2024 season as an assistant coach at Duke, Simmons spent six years (2018-23) at the helm of Florida A&M, where he owned a record of 45-13 overall, culminating with a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) and Cricket Celebration Bowl title in 2023.

Week two sees the Wildcats return to Miami for the second time in as many weeks. They will take on the University of Miami in what will be the eighth installment of the series against the Hurricanes since 2011. The last time the Wildcats played the Hurricanes was in 2023.

Bethune-Cookman stays on the road in week three for a trip to the “Palmetto State”—facing an old HBCU foe in the form of South Carolina State for the first time since 2022. B-CU has a storied history with former conference mate South Carolina State, dating back to their time in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC). The teams have played 58 times since 1959, with SCSU owning a 34-24 edge all-time.

Schedule breakdown

The 2025 home opener is set for Saturday, Sept. 20, against the Tigers of Edward Waters. The last time the Wildcats faced off against EWU was back in 2010, ending in a 70-10 win for the Wildcats at home.

The Cats open SWAC play the following week, hosting the Bulldogs of Alabama A&M. Bethune-Cookman claimed a 31-14 win over AAMU in the Bulldogs’ last trip to Daytona Stadium in 2023.

After a bye week, B-CU plays seven consecutive weekends to close the campaign, beginning with a visit to Alabama State (October 4).

On October 11, Southern (La.) will come to Daytona Beach for the first time since 1988 when the Jaguars descend upon Daytona Stadium. Last season, the two teams participated in the second-longest game in Wildcats history—a five-overtime thriller that saw the Cats fall 25-23 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Homecoming 2025 features Bethune-Cookman hosting Arkansas-Pine Bluff (October 25) to Daytona Beach for the first time as a member of the SWAC and the first time since 2005, when the Cats downed the Golden Lions, 31-17.

B-CU opens the month of November with a visit from Mississippi Valley State (Nov. 1) and new head coach Terrell Buckley. The Wildcats have won three consecutive contests against the Delta Devils, with a pair of victories coming on the road in Itta Bena, Mississippi, including last year’s 20-10 triumph on an MVSU Homecoming weekend.

The HBCU football season concludes with trips to Grambling State (November 8) and defending SWAC and Cricket Celebration Bowl champion Jackson State (November 15). The Florida Blue Florida Classic against FAMU is scheduled for November 22 at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Florida.

In a recent interview on the Dan Patrick Show, Michael Vick, the newly appointed head coach of Norfolk State University’s football team, was enthusiastic about the possibility of his team facing off against Deion Sanders’ Colorado Buffaloes in what would be a blockbuster HBCU vs Power 4 matchup. Vick spoke on Sanders’ impact on HBCU football during his tenure at Jackson State University, stating, “What Deion did at Jackson State was monumental. He brought national attention to HBCUs and elevated the program to new heights.”

“It’s a possibility. But..you know what? It would have to make all the sense in the world.” Vick responded to Patrick’s question about the possibility of this matchup. “You know, I spoke to Deion Sanders about those type of games and scheduling big-time games for the school, you just want to be cautious when you’re doing that, you know, you don’t want to put the kids in a bad situation, you know, obviously it helps the school out and we’ll pick and choose our spots in what’s the right team to play before I put them in a situation where it’s a detriment to them. And, when we do…when we finally schedule that game, we’ll be ready to play that game and be competitive in that game.”

Deion Sanders HBCU tenure

Deion Sanders began his coaching career at Jackson State in 2020, leading the Tigers to an impressive 27-6 record over three seasons. Under his leadership, Jackson State secured consecutive Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) titles in 2021 and 2022, with Sanders earning the SWAC Coach of the Year award both years. His tenure revitalized the football program at Jackson State and shone a national spotlight on the rich history and talent within HBCU football.

In December 2022, Sanders accepted the head coaching position at the University of Colorado, a move that surprised many but was consistent with Sanders’ ambition to take on and tackle new challenges. His inaugural season with the Buffaloes in 2023 concluded with a 4-8 record, but the subsequent 2024 season saw a remarkable turnaround, with Colorado finishing 9-3 and 7-2 in conference play.

Michael Vick’s path

Michael Vick’s journey into coaching mirrors Sanders’ path in several ways. Appointed as the head coach of Norfolk State in early 2025, Vick transitioned from a celebrated NFL career to collegiate coaching, aiming to leverage his experience to inspire and develop young athletes, especially in the Tidewater region of Virginia, where he grew up. Upon his hiring, Vick expressed his commitment to mentoring and transforming the football program at Norfolk State, stating, “I am blessed and humbled by this opportunity to lead, mentor, and transform the football program at Norfolk State University.”

The potential matchup between Norfolk State and Colorado symbolizes more than just a game; it represents the potential bridging of the gap between traditional HBCU programs and larger NCAA institutions from the Power 4 conferences. This game would provide invaluable exposure for Norfolk State University and its football program, an opportunity for Deion Sanders to stay connected to his HBCU football roots, and a big payday for the Norfolk State football program.

The prospect of a Norfolk State versus Colorado football game under the guidance of Michael Vick and Deion Sanders speaks to the evolving landscape of college football and the influential role that high-profile coaches can play in this progression. As both coaches continue to build their programs, fans and analysts eagerly anticipate this landmark matchup’s possibility.

WASHINGTON – Spring may be a little over a week away, but the focus of Howard University’s football team is set on the fall as the squad has released its 2025 HBCU football schedule. The announcement came Tuesday.

The slate of games on the football schedule, which includes a Labor Day Weekend clash with Florida A&M University, the battle for “the real HU” against Hampton University and the second of a two-game series with Tennessee State University, looks to make for an exciting season for the Bison, who hopes to rebound from last season’s 4-8 (1-4 MEAC) finish.

The Bison will open the 2025 season against Florida A&M in the Orange Blossom Classic on Saturday (August 30). The two teams played in the inaugural 1933 Orange Blossom Classic and have faced off 40 times over the last century in regular and postseason play. The game, the Bison’s first time back in the Orange Blossom Classic since 1974, will be played at the Hard Rock Stadium, home to the NFL’s Miami Dolphins. The game is the first of the three consecutive weeks when the Bison play in NFL stadiums. On September 6, the Bison will travel to Philadelphia to play Temple University at Lincoln Financial Field (Philadelphia Eagles), followed by September 13 when Howard takes on Morehouse College in the HBCU NY Classic at MetLife Stadium (New York Jets and New York Giants).

Participating in high-profile games like the Orange Blossom and HBCU NY Classics or facing programs like Temple on their home field do a lot for helping to raise the profile of Howard football, in general, and HBCU football overall, said Bison Head Coach Larry Scott.

“We are excited about the upcoming season and the opportunity for our student-athletes to be on big stages to demonstrate the competitive excellence that we know they are capable of,” Scott said. “We have been diligently working during this offseason and will continue to do so this spring to ensure that our team is ready to make our alumni and fans proud. We are determined to bring a championship mindset each week and bring a title home.”

The second half of the 2025 schedule features fierce contests against Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) rivals, including Delaware State University and Norfolk State University, both now led by first-year coaches, who had electrifying NFL careers – DeSean Jackson and Mike Vick, respectively.

The Bison, who were back-to-back MEAC champions (2022 & 2023) and participated in the 2023 Celebration Bowl in Atlanta, have been dedicating a lot of time to off-season training. The public will be able to get a glimpse of what they can expect once the regular season starts during the annual Spring Game, which will take place at Greene Stadium Saturday (April 12).

Howard Director of Athletics Kery Davis says that Bison fans have a lot to look forward to this season, from the away games in Miami and the New York metropolitan area to a visit to Nashville, where they will be the homecoming opponent for Tennessee State University. The schedule will help reinforce Howard’s commitment to providing a high-quality experience for student-athletes while showing the public that Howard students are capable of excelling both in and outside of the classroom.

“For the last several years, Howard University has seen a renaissance within our athletics programs, with our student-athletes winning championships in multiple sports,” Davis said. “Of course, we are proud of Howard’s rich and highly respected history of academic and leadership excellence. But we also have a phenomenal athletics program with incredibly talented student-athletes and this schedule will allow people in different regions to see the caliber of student-athletes we have and hopefully inspire students to consider coming to Howard where they can get a great education and compete in high-quality NCAA competition.”

MOBILE, Ala. – South Alabama head football coach Major Applewhite has announced the hiring of Broderick Fobbs as the program’s new running backs coach. Fobbs was an HBCU football head coach at Grambling State University from 2014-2021.

No stranger to the Sun Belt Conference, Fobbs comes to South Alabama by way of ULM where he coached the Warhawks’ running backs in 2023 and 2024. Fobbs’ star pupil at ULM was running back Ahmad Hardy, who was named the 2024 Sun Belt Freshman of the Year. Hardy ranked 12th in the nation and first in the conference with 1,351 rushing yards, and his 13 rushing touchdowns were the most in the league.

Prior to his time in Monroe, Fobbs was the head coach at Grambling State for eight seasons. In 2017, Fobbs led Grambling State to an overall record of 11-2, ending the season with an appearance in the Celebration Bowl. The Tigers repeated as SWAC Champions, beating Alcorn State, 40-32, and enjoyed classic wins over Clark Atlanta, Prairie View A&M and rival Southern. The four-time SWAC Coach of the Year and three-time Fritz Pollard award winner led the Tigers to a final ranking of 14th in the FCS Coaches Poll and 16th in the STATS FCS Top 25 Poll.

In 2016, Fobbs led the Tigers to an overall record of 12-1, ending the season as SWAC Champions, Air Force Reserve Celebration Bowl Champions and HBCU National Champions. After repeating as SWAC Western Division champions, winning the 2016 SWAC championship game and defeating North Carolina Central University 10-9 in the Air Force Reserve Celebration Bowl, the Tigers were recognized as one of the top teams in FCS football. Grambling finished the 2016 season on an 11-game winning streak, earning the program’s 25th SWAC title (the first since 2011) and 15th HBCU Football National title – its first since 2008. The Tigers finished the 2016 season ranked 15th in the final FCS Coaches Poll and 16th in the final FCS STATS poll.

In his first three years as a head coach, Fobbs won three SWAC Coach of the Year awards and led the Tigers to a 25-2 regular-season conference record – including back-to-back undefeated conference regular seasons. In addition to being named SWAC Coach of the Year in 2016, Fobbs was also named the Sheridan Broadcasting Network Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year, HERO Sports FCS Football Coach of the Year, BOXTOROW Co-Coach of the Year, 3x Fitz Pollard Coach of the Year and was a finalist for the FCS Eddie Robinson Award.

In 2014, Fobbs was named SWAC Coach of the Year, Louisiana Sports Writers Coach of the Year, Black College HOF Sports Writers Coach of the Year, and Sheridan Broadcasting Network Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year and was named a FCS Eddie Robinson Award Finalist. The success continued into Fobbs’ second year at Grambling as he guided the team to an undefeated regular season conference record (9-0) – the first undefeated regular-season record by a SWAC school since Grambling finished 7-0 in 2008 – and a western division championship.

Before earning the head coaching job at Grambling, Fobbs was the tight ends coach at McNeese State in 2013 before working there as the co-offensive coordinator and receivers coach from 2007 to 2011. Between stints with the Cowboys, Fobbs spent the 2012 campaign at Southern Miss as receivers coach.

Fobbs started his coaching career at Louisiana as a graduate assistant in 2000. He then earned his first full-time job at Northwestern State as a tight ends coach in 2003. Fobbs spent two seasons in that role before being promoted to co-offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach in 2005. During his time at NSU, Fobbs completed an NFL Minority Internship with the Buffalo Bills.

Fobbs was a two-time team captain at Grambling, where he won the 1992 HBCU National Championship, defeating Florida A&M 45-15 in the Heritage Bowl. Grambling State was also a co-champion of the SWAC in 1994. He led the conference in yards per carry, averaging 7.1 yards/carry his senior year. He racked up more than 1,500 rushing yards during his college football career. He earned his Bachelor’s degree from Grambling in 1997.

Fobbs is married to the former Kimbia Jones. The couple has two children, Kyndal and Rylee.

Michael Vick just offered his former NFL teammate’s son, Donovan McNabb Jr., a spot at his HBCU program.

Donovan McNabb Jr. is a rising sophomore and is a three-star wide receiver. The 6-foot, 170-pound wide receiver from Brophy College Preparatory in Phoenix, Arizona, has also received several scholarship offers from Power Four programs such as Arizona, Iowa State, Minnesota, and Syracuse University, his father’s alma mater.

Additionally, he has been offered scholarships by Northern Arizona, Temple, Sacramento State, and Southern Mississippi.

Vick and McNabb are forever linked not only as two quarterbacks who changed the face of the quarterback position in the NFL but also as brief teammates.

Donovan McNabb, HBCU Michael Vick

When Michael Vick joined the Philadelphia Eagles in 2009, he entered a quarterback room led by Donovan McNabb, one of the franchise’s greatest passers. McNabb, a six-time Pro Bowler and the face of the Eagles for over a decade, was coming off a season where he led the team to the NFC Championship Game. Meanwhile, Vick was returning to the NFL. The Eagles took a chance on him, and McNabb played a key role in mentoring him during his transition back into professional football.

Though Vick played a limited role in the Eagles’ offense in 2009, often used in gadget plays and wildcat formations, he has credited McNabb for helping him regain his confidence and understanding of the game after two years away. McNabb publicly supported Vick’s comeback, even lobbying for the Eagles to sign him. Their time together lasted just one season, as McNabb was traded to Washington in 2010. With McNabb gone, Vick took over as the Eagles’ starting quarterback and had an MVP-caliber season, proving he still had elite talent. Their brief stint as teammates marked a unique moment in NFL history, as one great quarterback helped another resurrect his career.

Now Vick is making sure he gets an early run at Donovan McNabb Jr. to add to his HBCU football roster.

Markquese Bell’s journey from Florida A&M University (FAMU), a prominent Historically Black College and University (HBCU), to securing a substantial NFL contract with the Dallas Cowboys epitomizes resilience and determination. Recently, Bell agreed to a three-year deal valued at up to $12 million with the Cowboys.

Contract Details

The agreement ensures Bell’s continued presence in the Cowboys’ defense through the 2028 season. The contract, averaging $4 million annually, includes a prorated signing bonus, effectively managing the team’s salary cap. This extension reflects the Cowboys’ confidence in Bell’s abilities and their commitment to retaining key defensive talent. Patrik Walker of DallasCowboys.com reports that as a restricted free agent, the Cowboys could have placed a tender on him before allowing him to take offers from other teams. Giving them the right to match any offer and receive compensation for their loss if the tender was of the second or first-round variety.

As an undrafted player, the original round tender was not in play for Bell, technically, making use of a simple Right of First Refusal — the equivalent — a likely outcome in lieu of a deal landing, seeing as the Cowboys never had any plans of letting Bell leave.

From FAMU to the NFL

Bell’s path to the NFL was unconventional. After transferring from the University of Maryland, he joined FAMU in 2019. During the 2021 season, Bell recorded 95 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, and an interception over 12 starts, earning first-team all-conference honors. Despite his collegiate success, Bell went undrafted in the 2022 NFL Draft but secured a spot with the Cowboys as a free agent.

HBCU NFL Dallas Cowboys Markquese Bell
NFL Career Progression

Bell’s rookie season in 2022 saw limited action, with appearances in five games and one recorded tackle for the Dallas Cowboys. However, the 2023 season marked a turning point. Transitioning from safety to linebacker due to team needs, Bell played all 17 games, starting eight. He amassed 94 tackles, including 60 solo tackles, four pass deflections, and two forced fumbles, contributing significantly to the Cowboys’ NFC East title. His performance earned him the NFL’s HBCU Spotlight Player of the Year award for 2023.

Significance of HBCU Representation

Bell’s achievements highlight the talent emerging from HBCU football programs like FAMU. His journey underscores the importance of these institutions in nurturing athletes who excel at professional levels, inspiring future generations from similar backgrounds. Markquese Bell’s story is a testament to perseverance and the impactful role of HBCUs in shaping athletes ready to compete on the NFL stage.

Eddie George, former Tennessee Titans running back and Heisman Trophy winner, has officially accepted the head coaching position at Bowling Green State University after a four-year tenure at Tennessee State University (TSU). George led the Tigers to a 9-4 record in 2024 and the first FCS playoff appearance for the HBCU since 2013.

In his official statement regarding the transition, George expressed mixed emotions about leaving TSU but emphasized his commitment to advancing his coaching career: “My love for this school, this institution, extends beyond what you could ever imagine for affording me this opportunity.” George told the Tennessean. He acknowledged the challenges faced during his tenure in HBCU football, noting that while he had hoped for improvements in certain areas, the current timeframe necessitated his decision to move forward.

“Not everything was great, and that’s ok,” said Eddie George to the Tennessean. “It allowed me to grow and be a part of my sport again and it really challenged me as a man through and through. My love for this school, this institution, extends beyond what you could ever imagine for affording me this opportunity.

“There is never a good time for retirement or making a transition, moving on to a new coaching position. I had to really weigh my options and look at what I was walking away from and where I was going toward. There’s a lot of reasons why I made this decision. My intentions were really to stay here at Tennessee State with hopes that things would definitely get better and so forth. And they will, eventually. But just not in this time frame. And I understand that.”

Eddie George at TSU

George’s departure from an HBCU program at the FCS level to an FBS school like Bowling Green of the Mid-American Conference underscores an evolving dynamic in the world of college football coaching. His journey reflects both the progress and the ongoing challenges facing coaches, specifically in HBCU football, looking to land leading roles across the various levels of college football. Highlighting the broader narrative of coaching mobility and the impact that a positive leadership transition can have on collegiate athletic programs.

“I am truly excited to be the head coach at Bowling Green State University,” said George about his move to Bowling Green. “Bowling Green is a wonderful community that has embraced the school and the athletics department. We are eager to immerse ourselves in the community and help build this program to the greatness it deserves. I am overwhelmed with excitement and joy for the possibilities this opportunity holds. I’m also thrilled to be back in the great state of Ohio, where I played my college football. I look forward to meeting the team, the coaches, everyone in the athletics department, and everyone in the BGSU and Bowling Green community.”

Tennessee State University head coach and NFL star Eddie George has reportedly been offered the head coaching position at Bowling Green University, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel. The former Heisman Trophy-winning running back has revitalized the HBCU program since taking over in 2021, leading the Tigers to their first conference championship since 1999 and their first FCS Playoff berth in over a decade.

George, a finalist for the Eddie Robinson Award, guided Tennessee State to a 9-4 record this season, marking the program’s first nine-win campaign since 2013. Under his leadership, TSU was recognized twice as the Stats Perform HBCU Team of the Week and remained ranked in the national FCS Top 25 polls entering the postseason.

The former Tennessee Titans legend took the reins of the HBCU program despite having no prior coaching experience, signing a five-year contract worth $400,000 annually. His transition from the NFL to the sidelines was met with skepticism, but his ability to develop talent and instill a winning culture has changed the perception of the Tigers on the national stage.

After a 5-6 finish in his first season and a 4-7 mark in 2022, George’s team took a significant step forward in 2023. Competing in the newly formed Big South–OVC Football Association, Tennessee State finished 6-5 but struggled in conference play with a 2-4 record. However, in 2024, George’s squad dominated the competition, winning nine games while excelling on both sides of the ball.

Hbcu

Tennessee State’s defense ranked among the nation’s best, averaging 7.3 tackles-for-loss per game and forcing three defensive touchdowns. The Tigers boasted the conference’s top kickoff return unit (26.79 yards per return) and led in key defensive categories, including passing defense and turnover margin. Offensively, they scored 40 points in four different games and avoided consecutive losses all season.

If George accepts the Bowling Green job, he would become the latest former NFL player to leverage his success at an HBCU into an opportunity at the FBS level. His departure would be a significant loss for Tennessee State, but his tenure has left the program in a much stronger position than when he arrived.

Delaware State football is entering a new era under head coach DeSean Jackson, and his first major quarterback commitment at the HBCU may offer a clue about his offensive vision. Former Michigan quarterback Anthony Arnou, a 6’2”, 234-pound pro-style passer, is headed to Delaware State, an HBCU competing in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC).

The MEAC has been dominated by dual-threat quarterbacks for years, but Jackson’s decision to recruit a big-bodied pocket passer suggests a pro-style shift for Delaware State. However, Arnou isn’t walking into an empty quarterback room. Marqui Adams, who showed flashes of potential last season, is still in the mix. With the HBCU program looking to improve from a 1-11 season, the battle for QB1 will be one to watch.

A Pro-Style Quarterback in a Dual-Threat League

The MEAC has traditionally seen mobile quarterbacks thrive. Recent stars like Davius Richard (North Carolina Central) and Corey Fields Jr. (South Carolina State) used their legs as much as their arms to lead their teams to championships.

Anthony Arnou, however, is a different type of quarterback.

His college career began at Fresno State, where he redshirted and then transferred to Pasadena City College. He threw for 620 yards and four touchdowns in just four games. His standout performances earned him a spot at Michigan, where he was a Scout Team Offensive Player of the Week, helping prepare the Wolverines’ defense for the Ohio State game.

As Arnou arrives at Delaware State, the big question is: Does Jackson’s quarterback choice signal a major offensive shift for the HBCU program?

Delaware State, HBCU DeSean Jackson
Building a Pro-Style Offense at Delaware State

If DeSean Jackson is committed to a pocket-passing offense, he needs the right offensive line and playmakers to make it work. That’s why Delaware State’s recruiting overhaul is just as important as Arnou’s commitment.

Offensive Line: Protecting the Quarterback

The biggest weakness for Delaware State in 2024 was its offensive line:

 • Allowed 45 sacks (worst in the MEAC)
 • Averaged just 309.3 total yards per game
 • Struggled in red-zone situations

Jackson has made significant upgrades by bringing in bigger, more experienced linemen:

 • Elijha Payne (OL, Arizona, 6’7”) – FBS experience at left tackle.
 • Rodney Leaks (OL, Houston Christian, 6’5”) – Strong interior lineman.
 • Keyshawn Ross Jr. (OL, Huguenot HS, 6’3”) – Promising high school recruit.
 • Blake Brown (OL, East St. Louis HS, 6’4”) – Adds much-needed depth.

With these additions, Delaware State’s offensive line should improve—an essential factor for a pro-style quarterback like Arnou to succeed.

Finding a New Lead Running Back

The Hornets must replace Jaden Sutton, who was the engine of Delaware State’s offense last season, rushing for 1,220 yards and 12 touchdowns. Jackson brought in Kobe Boykin (Jackson State transfer) and will also look to Marquis Gillis (2022 MEAC Rookie of the Year) to handle the rushing attack.

If Boykin and Gillis provide a strong backfield, it will take pressure off Arnou and open up the passing game.

Revamping the Wide Receiver Room

For Delaware State’s passing offense to improve, Arnou will need playmakers at wide receiver. Jackson has already made key additions:

 • Antonio Gates Jr. (WR, Michigan State, 6’2”) – FBS talent with size and hands.
 • Jadyn Robinson (WR, Junipero Serra HS) – The highest-rated recruit in Delaware State football history.
 • Ezekiel Orozco (WR, Long Beach Poly HS) – A speedster who adds a much-needed deep threat.

With these additions, Delaware State’s passing attack has a chance to be far more explosive in 2025.

Is DeSean Jackson Changing Delaware State’s Football Identity?

Delaware State has struggled offensively for years, relying on a run-heavy system and mobile quarterbacks. But Jackson’s recruiting moves, particularly landing a pro-style quarterback like Arnou, suggest a more balanced, vertical passing attack.

However, two key factors will determine whether this shift is successful:

 1. Can the offensive line give Arnou the time he needs to operate in the pocket?
 2. Will the new receivers and running backs provide the offensive firepower to complement a passing attack?

With five months until kickoff, Jackson’s first recruiting class at Delaware State is shaping up to be one of the best in HBCU football this offseason.

And it may all start with Anthony Arnou.

]]>
The route for HBCU and other non-Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) college football players seeking to achieve their NFL dreams could become even harder in the future due to the impact of the transfer portal and lack of access to the annual NFL combine, according to a recent ESPN report.

Some of the greatest NFL players like Walter Payton, Jerry Rice, Aeneas Williams, Shannon Sharpe and Michael Strahan played at HBCUs – today’s Football Championship Subdivision level programs – before dominating at the NFL level. However, when the Pro Football Hall of Famers played in college, they didn’t have access to name, image and likeness nor were they forced to deal with the impact of the transfer portal.

Only seven (FCS) players were invited to the 2025 NFL Combine nearly a week ago in Indianapolis. With the seismic changes to the transfer portal that took place ahead of the 2021 college football season, along with last year’s amendment to the transfer rule of allowing programs unlimited players to transfer without penalties (barring they met academic obligations), it has resulted in fewer FCS players receiving an invite to the NFL’s weeklong showcase at Lucas Oil Stadium due to the perception of more NFL-ready talent at the FBS ranks.

NFL red flags for non-transfers?

Zach McKinnell, editor and owner of FCS Football Central, reported Tuesday on X (formerly known as Twitter) that multiple scouts from professional football teams who attended the Senior Bowl and HBCU Legacy Bowl revealed that FCS prospects who choose to remain at the FCS level instead of darting for FBS programs are labeled as “potential red flags” at the next level.

“Were they scared of better competition, are they not good enough to play at that level?” McKinnell tweeted.

ESPN’s Kalyn Kahler reported that an average of 20.5 players from smaller non-FBS programs received invites to the combine between 2016 to 2021, prior to changes to the transfer portal. However, the mean number of players has dropped to 14.5 since 2022, the lowest mark in the last decade.

Even more, no players from the Division II or the Division III ranks earned invites to the last two combines. But prior to changes to the transfer rule, an average of 3.5 sub-FCS players earned combine invites from 2015 to 2021, per the report.

The report also indicated that 126 of the 330 players who received invites to the combine transferred at some level of college football at least once, with many of the players taking their talents to programs on the same level. Additionally, 28 of those 330 have transferred no less than once from a non-FBS program. Compare that to the 2018 combine, an event where only two players among 336 invited players transferred to a higher-level college football program – meaning NAIA to D-II or FCS to FBS – after playing at a non-FBS program.

Some of the higher-profile HBCU prospects hoping to hear their names called in this year’s NFL draft include Alabama A&M’s Carson Vinson and Donovan Eaglin, Jackson State’s Irv Mulligan and Robert McDaniel, Florida A&M’s Kendall Bohler, Howard’s Jarrett Hunter, Virginia Union’s Jada Byers, Hampton’s Elijah Burris, South Carolina State’s Aaron Smith and Alabama State’s James Burgess, to name a few.

The 2025 NFL draft will take place April 24-26 at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

In the ultra-competitive world of college football recruiting, contrasting philosophies can often emerge, especially between HBCU football programs and their Power Four Conference counterparts. An example of the difference in recruiting tactics between HBCUs and PWIs ([redominantly white institutions) involves recently hired Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU) head football coach Tremaine Jackson, who recently critiqued the recruiting tactics of big-time PWI schools, bringing up LSU’s head coach Brian Kelly and his viral internet moment from 2022.

In a candid discussion about his recruiting philosophy with Dave Campbell’s Texas Football, Coach Jackson emphasized authenticity and straightforwardness. He stated, “We don’t wine and dine guys in recruiting. We give it to you straight up because I don’t have time to de-recruit you.” Jackson further distinguished his approach by referencing a viral video in 2022 where Brian Kelly was seen dancing with a recruit who ultimately committed to Alabama. Jackson remarked, “You’re not going to catch me on Twitter with my hat backward and dancing on the 360 with guys. Brian Kelly did that, and he ain’t won a championship yet.”

This critique underscores a broader conversation about the authenticity and effectiveness of recruiting methods. Jackson’s commitment to a no-nonsense approach reflects his desire to build genuine relationships with recruits, focusing on substance over spectacle. This philosophy is deeply rooted in the values of many HBCU programs, where personal development and cultural affirmation are paramount.

Who is Tremaine Jackson

Born on August 30, 1983, in Houston, Texas, Tremaine Jackson played collegiate football as a defensive tackle at Texas Southern and later at Louisiana-Monroe.

His coaching career began in 2006 at Texas A&M–Kingsville, followed by positions at Trinity Valley Community College and his alma mater, Texas Southern University. Jackson further honed his coaching acumen with roles at Evangel University, the University of Sioux Falls—where he served as defensive coordinator—Abilene Christian University, and Texas State University.

In 2020, Jackson accepted the head coaching position at Colorado Mesa University, leading the team until 2021. He then transitioned to Valdosta State University in 2022, where he maintained the Blazer’s status as a Division II football powerhouse, with an impressive 13-0 season and an appearance in the NCAA Division II National Championship game in 2024.

His accomplishments at Valdosta State earned him the AFCA Division II National Coach of the Year award.

HBCU Tremaine Jackson Prairie View A&M

In December 2024, Tremaine Jackson was appointed as the head football coach at Prairie View A&M University. His return to an HBCU setting is particularly meaningful, reflecting a full-circle moment from his days as a Texas Southern player to leading a prominent HBCU football program. Jackson’s vision for PVAMU centers on fostering a culture of discipline, obedience, and grit—a philosophy he encapsulates with the acronym ‘DOG.’ He aims to cultivate a program that excels not only on the field but also in academic achievement and community engagement.

Coach Jackson’s emphasis on straightforward recruiting and his critique of more flamboyant tactics resonate within the HBCU community, where authenticity and cultural integrity are highly valued. His leadership at Prairie View A&M is anticipated to reinforce these principles, contributing to the rich legacy and continued prominence of HBCU football programs.

Bhayshul Tuten’s journey from HBCU football at North Carolina A&T to excelling at the Power Four level at Virginia Tech earned him an invite to the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine. After a standout performance in front of scouts from around the NFL, Tuten has positioned himself as a potential steal in the upcoming NFL Draft.

Early Career at North Carolina A&T

Tuten began his collegiate career at North Carolina A&T, an esteemed Historically Black College and University (HBCU). As a freshman in 2021, he showcased his versatility by rushing for 215 yards and three touchdowns on 37 carries, averaging 5.8 yards per carry. He also contributed as a receiver, recording 10 receptions for 230 yards and a touchdown, and as a return specialist, leading the Aggies in kickoff return yards with 330 yards on 18 returns.

His sophomore year in 2022 marked a significant leap, as he amassed 1,363 rushing yards on 208 carries and scored 13 touchdowns. Tuten’s dynamic performances earned him recognition within the Big South Conference and underscored the competitive talent within HBCU football.

Transition to Virginia Tech

Tuten transferred to Virginia Tech in 2023, seeking to compete at a higher level. In his first season with the Hokies, he started all 13 games and rushed for 863 yards and 10 touchdowns on 173 carries.

He continued his upward trajectory in 2024, recording 1,159 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns on 183 carries, averaging an impressive 6.3 yards per carry. Tuten finished 4th in the ACC in rushing yards and tied for 2nd in touchdowns, including a game in which he set a new school record at Virginia Tech for most yards in a game by rushing for 266 yards against Boston College.

NFL Combine Performance

At the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine, Tuten delivered a remarkable performance that caught the attention of scouts and analysts alike. He recorded the fastest 40-yard dash time among running backs, clocking in at 4.32 seconds, which is the fourth-fastest in combine history for his position. His 4.32 40-yard dash is also faster than Jahmyr Gibbs and Saquon Barkley, two of the top active running backs in the NFL.

Additionally, he led all running backs with a 40.5-inch vertical jump, showcasing his exceptional athleticism. NFL scouts were notably impressed by Tuten’s blend of speed and power. His 40-yard dash time demonstrated his breakaway speed and solidified his potential as a game-changing running back at the professional level. Analysts have suggested that his combine performance could elevate his draft stock, transforming him from a potential day-three pick to an early-round selection.

Some projections even link him to teams like the Los Angeles Chargers, who may seek to bolster their backfield with a player of Tuten’s caliber.

Bhayshul Tuten’s progression from a standout at an HBCU to a top performer at a Power Five school, culminating in an exceptional NFL Combine showing, exemplifies his dedication and talent. His journey reflects the rich legacy of HBCU football in nurturing NFL-caliber players and underscores the diverse pathways athletes can take to professional success. As the NFL Draft approaches, Tuten’s unique blend of experience, athleticism, and performance positions him as a compelling prospect for teams seeking a dynamic running back.

MACON, GA | On Saturday, February 22, 2025, Terance Mathis, one of Georgia’s most accomplished athletes, was officially inducted into the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame during a ceremony in Macon. Mathis, currently the head HBCU football coach at Morehouse College, has built a legacy of excellence from his high school days to his professional and coaching careers.

Mathis’ journey to football greatness began at Redan High School in Stone Mountain, Georgia. As a standout multi-sport athlete, he excelled in football, showcasing the talent that would later define his career. His high school performance earned him a scholarship to the University of New Mexico, where he became one of the most dominant receivers in NCAA history.

During his time at New Mexico, Mathis shattered multiple NCAA records, finishing his collegiate career with 263 receptions and 4,254 receiving yards. His dominance on the field earned him consensus All-American honors in 1989, and in recognition of his achievements, he was inducted into the New Mexico Sports Hall of Fame in 2011 and the College Football Hall of Fame in 2023.

Following his college success, Mathis entered the NFL in 1990, drafted by the New York Jets. He played four seasons with the team before joining the Atlanta Falcons in 1994, where he became a franchise legend. That year, Mathis made history with 111 receptions, making him just the eighth player in NFL history to surpass 100 catches in a single season. Over his eight seasons with the Falcons, Mathis amassed 573 receptions, 7,349 receiving yards, and 57 touchdowns—ranking third in franchise history for both receiving yards and touchdown receptions. His performance earned him a Pro Bowl selection in 1994.

After retiring as a player, Mathis transitioned into coaching, beginning as the offensive coordinator at Savannah State University in 2011. He later became the head coach at Pinecrest Academy in Georgia, focusing on player development and community engagement. In February 2024, Mathis was named head football coach at Atlanta-based HBCU Morehouse College, where he continues to inspire and mentor young athletes.

Mathis’ induction into the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame marks yet another milestone in his storied career, honoring his contributions to sports in the state. He was recognized alongside fellow inductees such as Marquis Grisson (brother of current Morehouse Head Baseball Coach Antonio Grissom), Tim Hudson, Leo Mazzone, and Dennis Scott during the 69th Annual Induction Ceremony in Macon.

Reflecting on the honor, Mathis expressed gratitude to his family, coaches, and the Atlanta Falcons organization, which celebrated his achievement on social media. “Georgia sports legend, @coachmathis81. Congratulations on your @GAsportsHOF induction!” the Falcons tweeted.

Now leading Morehouse College’s HBCU football program, Terance Mathis continues to shape the future of the sport. His induction into the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame, along with his previous inductions into the New Mexico Sports Hall of Fame and the College Football Hall of Fame, highlights his incredible impact on the game. It is a testament to his dedication, skill, and lasting legacy in football. For up-to-date athletic information on the Maroon Tigers, follow them on social media or online at www.morehouseathletics.com.

BALTIMORE — Morgan State University’s Board of Regents has approved the University’s decision to opt into the House v. NCAA settlement, a landmark resolution addressing past restrictions on student-athlete compensation. By opting in, Morgan joins other institutions committed to a more sustainable and equitable model for collegiate athletics while securing protections from future litigation related to name, image, and likeness (NIL) restrictions. Morgan State is a is a Carnegie-classified high research (R2) HBCU located in Baltimore, Maryland.

The House v. NCAA settlement, valued at over $2.7 billion, is designed to compensate former and current college athletes who were denied NIL opportunities before the NCAA changed its policies in 2021. The settlement also establishes a revenue-sharing framework, allowing institutions to allocate resources directly to student-athletes while maintaining competitive and compliant athletic programs.

“Morgan’s decision to opt into the House v. NCAA settlement reflects our unwavering commitment to student-athlete success and our proactive approach to navigating the evolving landscape of collegiate athletics,” said David K. Wilson, president of Morgan State University. “With the full support of our Board of Regents, we believe this decision is in the best interest of our institution, ensuring compliance, stability, and new opportunities for our student-athletes moving forward.”

As part of the settlement, the HBCU will contribute an estimated $231,227 to the payout fund and adhere to the new roster and scholarship limits. While adjustments will be made to team sizes—including reducing the football roster from 130 to 105 players—the University will have the flexibility to expand opportunities in Olympic sports under Title IX compliance. Additionally, Morgan will have institutional control over NIL revenue-sharing and access to alternative funding sources, such as foundation and university-driven revenue initiatives, to enhance student-athlete support. Other team sports to experience roster limits include men’s and women’s basketball and tennis teams.

“Opting in ensures that we remain competitive while continuing to prioritize the well-being and success of our student-athletes,” said Dena Freeman-Patton, vice president and director for Intercollegiate Athletics at Morgan. “This decision allows us to leverage institutional resources strategically, invest in our programs, and create pathways for financial support beyond traditional NIL opportunities. Ultimately, this strengthens our ability to recruit, retain, and support the next generation of Morgan Bear athletes.”

Under the settlement’s provisions, Power Five conference schools were automatically included, while other Division I institutions had until March 1 to opt in individually or through their athletic conferences. The Baltimore HBCU is a member of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) and made the independent decision to opt in, recognizing the opportunity to maintain compliance, strengthen athletic programs, and invest in the overall student-athlete experience.

As collegiate athletics continue to evolve, Morgan remains committed to fostering a transformative student-athlete experience, prioritizing compliance, and ensuring long-term program viability.

TUSKEGEE, Ala. — Tuskegee University is pleased to announce the appointment of O.C. Williams II as the new Defensive Coordinator for the Golden Tiger HBCU football program. Williams brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record of defensive excellence to Tuskegee.

Prior to joining Tuskegee, Williams served as the Assistant Head Coach, Defensive Line Coach, and Recruiting Coordinator at Fort Valley State University during the 2022 season. Fort Valley State’s defensive unit evolved into one of the premier defenses in the SIAC from 2022 to 2024, showing consistent improvement each season in key areas such as pass rush, run defense, and forcing turnovers.

Their ability to limit opponents’ scoring and dictate the tempo of games was instrumental in shaping the team’s identity and keeping them competitive in the conference. Stopping the run became a hallmark of Fort Valley State’s defensive identity, with opponents struggling to establish a ground game against their front seven. By 2024, they had developed into one of the best run-stopping units in the SIAC.

The continued improvement of Fort Valley State’s defense was a major reason for their competitiveness in the SIAC. By 2024, they had solidified their reputation as a physical, disciplined, and aggressive unit that dictated games. Their ability to consistently stop the run, pressure quarterbacks, and create turnovers allowed them to control field position and give their offense more opportunities to score.

HBCU Tuskegee

Before that, he was the Cornerbacks and Special Teams Coach at HBCU Alabama A&M University in 2021. Williams spent four years (2017-2020) at Reinhardt University, where he contributed to four Mid-South Conference titles and an NAIA National Championship runner-up finish.

His tenure at Reinhardt included roles as Defensive Line Coach, Run Game Coordinator, Recruiting Coordinator, and Defensive Coordinator. Under his leadership, the defense consistently ranked among the nation’s best, producing multiple All-Conference players and All-Americans. Williams’ coaching career also includes positions at the University of West Florida, University of North Carolina-Pembroke, McPherson College, East Mississippi Community College, and the Canadian Football League’s Edmonton Eskimos.

A graduate of Alcorn State University, Williams played as a defensive back and long snapper. He also played defensive back at Holmes Community College in Mississippi. Williams is set to begin his role immediately, aiming to elevate the Golden Tigers’ defense in the upcoming season.

The Albany State Golden Rams finished last season 6-4 with a 20-15 win over the Fort Valley State Wildcats in the Fountain City Classic. That game represented a line in the sand that ASU plans to use to assert itself in HBCU football as a contender for the 2025 SIAC crown. “We return all 11 starters on offense from last year and nine on defense,” head coach Quinn Gray said.

“The experience we got with those guys last year and the way that we played in the Fountain City Classic, defensively, is the ‘Dirty Blue’ defense that we know. To take the momentum from that game and take it into this spring, hopefully, we’ll have a tremendous spring in terms of competition and turn that page from last year moving forward.”

The Golden Rams topped the SIAC in offense. If there was an area that needed some bolstering, it was the defense. If ASU can continue its progress on defense and expand its capabilities on offense. it should be in the position it desires at the end of the season. The Blue and Gold could look to be a top contender in the highly-competitive SIAC.

Gray returns to Bragg Stadium as opposing coach

The Golden Rams will play SWAC HBCU Florida A&M (FAMU) early on. The Sept. 13 game will be Gray’s homecoming. He is in the FAMU Sports Hall of Fame for his record-setting passing under legendary HBCU football head coach Billy Joe. Gray says he will be focused on the task at hand.

“It’s really a tremendous opportunity for us at Albany State to come down and play a good football team. We’re really trying to make sure we understand the magnitude of it. We’re going down to win a ballgame,” Gray said. “All of the outside noise with me coming back and all that good stuff. We really want to test and see where we are as a football team. To come down here and play well and hopefully come out of here with a victory is what it’s all about.”

Quinn Gray Jr joins the Golden Rams squad

This year, two Quinn Grays will be on the Albany State sideline. Quinn Gray Jr, who graduates from Tallahassee’s Lincoln High School this year, will be playing for his father this season. After a standout career with the Trojans, Gray Jr. decided to take his talents to where his father is coaching. Gray’s other som, Ashton Chaney-Gray. also graduates from Lincoln High School and will attend ASU as well. This is an honor for his sons to choose to play for him, but they get no favoritism from Quinn Sr.

“Quinn (Gray Jr.) and Ash (Ashton Chaney-Gray) signed to play for me. As a father, you just want to see your boys succeed. If the next level is afforded to them, then it’s afforded to them. Fortunately, they are good football players, and it’s not like I’m doing them a favor. I told them that, at the end of the day, if you’re not playing good football, then you can go somewhere else. Having them with me is a blessing in itself.

PINE BLUFF, AR.- The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB) head coach Alonzo Hampton has announced the promotion of Jeff Burrow to Defensive Coordinator/Safeties. Burrow will step into the Defensive Coordinator role after serving last season as the program’s co-defensive coordinator and safety coach. During that time, he had two HBCU student-athletes, Ja’Marlin Green and Quintin Sterling, finish in the top 16 in tackles in the SWAC Conference. Under his guidance, the Golden Lions also ranked fourth in interceptions on defense.

Before his four seasons in HBCU football with the Golden Lions, Burrow previously spent three years at the University at Buffalo (UB). He joined UB as the Bulls’ director of player personnel and transitioned to coaching the defensive backs in 2021 after previously coaching the safeties.

In 2020, Burrow’s safeties played a significant role in helping the Bulls achieve the top ranking in total defense in the Mid-American Conference. Safety Cory Gross ranked second on the team in tackles with 42, while Tyrone Hill ranked fourth with 31 tackles and was second in pass breakups with 6.

Burrow made an immediate impact in his first season coaching safeties. Both starting safeties, Joey Banks and Tyrone Hill, received All-MAC honors. Banks, a first-team selection, led the Bulls in tackles (85) and interceptions (3), while Hill earned second-team honors with 70 tackles and a team-best 10 pass breakups.

Before his time at UB, Burrow served as the safeties coach at Kent State from 2011 to 2017, where he was later promoted to co-defensive coordinator in 2017. He contributed to the Golden Flashes’ MAC East title run in 2012 and their first bowl appearance in 40 years. In each of Burrow’s first five seasons, a Kent State safety earned All-MAC honors, including the two-time first-team All-MAC selection Nate Holley.

During his tenure at Kent State, Burrow also coached several Academic All-MAC players, notably Jordan Italiano, who became the first football player in the school’s history to be a three-time Academic All-American. In 2015, he was the only position coach in the nation with two Academic All-Americans.

HBCU Arkansas at Pine Bluff

Before his time at Kent State, Burrow spent a season as the secondary coach at Indiana State and the year prior as the assistant secondary coach at Marshall. From 2007 to 2008, he coached wide receivers at Jacksonville State.

Burrow’s coaching career began as a defensive graduate assistant at Notre Dame from 2005 to 2006 and at Minnesota from 2003 to 2004.

As a player, Burrow was a four-year starter at cornerback for the University of Cincinnati from 1995 to 1999. Following his college career, he signed with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League and played one season with the team.

The Sylvester, Georgia, native earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Cincinnati in 1999 and a master’s degree in education from Minnesota in 2004. He and his wife, Janea, have three daughters: Jazmyne, Jaelyn, and Jayda.

Virginia Union University, from the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association, will face Miles College, from the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, in the 2025 Black College Football Hall of Fame Classic in Canton on Aug. 31. For the first time in the six-year history of the Labor Day weekend game, the newly dubbed “Clash at The Classic” will feature the defending HBCU football champions from the CIAA and SIAC — two athletic conferences primarily composed of Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

“Clash at The Classic”

Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium on the campus of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. NFL Network, which will provide coverage of the game, announced the teams and new conference arrangement today during its broadcast of the 2025 Allstate HBCU Legacy Bowl in New Orleans, La.

“We are grateful to the commissioners and teams of the CIAA and SIAC for their commitment to playing in the Black College Football Hall of Fame Classic game,” said Jim Porter, president & CEO of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. “The format of bringing in the defending conference champions sets up the ‘Clash at The Classic’ as an entertaining, well-matched game annually, with top-tier players representing their historic universities.”

HBCU Black College Football Hall of Fame Classic

Virginia Union head coach Alvin Parker and the Panthers are making their second appearance in Canton; they defeated Morehouse College 45-13 in the 2023 Black College Football Hall of Fame Classic. In 2024, the Panthers posted a 10-4 record that included two wins in the Division II NCAA tournament before falling to the eventual national runner-up Valdosta State Blazers in the quarterfinal round.

The 2025 “Clash at The Classic” will serve as Miles head coach Chris Goode’s first game at the helm of the Golden Bears. The program finished a historic 2024 season with a 10-3 record that included school records for most victories, most consecutive wins in a single year (10), and its first NCAA Division II playoff victory. The Golden Bears’ season also ended at the hands of Valdosta State, one week before the Blazers ousted Virginia Union.

Fans can purchase their seats now to see the game and energizing band performances featuring the Virginia Union Ambassadors of Sound Marching Band and the Miles College Purple Marching Machine. Tickets, starting at $40, are available here.

Delaware State University’s football program has added another NFL great to its HBCU football coaching staff. Newly hired head coach DeSean Jackson has appointed Clinton Portis as the team’s running backs coach. A move that will add another layer of excitement to the 2025 Delaware State football season. The announcement was made on the program’s official Instagram account.

About Clinton Portis

Clinton Portis, a Laurel, Mississippi native, made a name for himself during his nine-season NFL career. He began his collegiate career at the University of Miami, where he rushed for 2,523 yards, ranking fourth in the school’s history. Portis was instrumental during one of the most successful eras in the history of “The U,” including a national championship victory.

His professional career started with the Denver Broncos selected him in the second round of the 2002 NFL Draft. Portis’ skills quickly translated to the professional level, surpassing 1,500 rushing yards in each of his first two seasons. In 2004, he was traded to the Washington Redskins, where he continued to be a top running back in the league, averaging 81.2 rushing yards per game over seven seasons. Contributions of which earned him a spot among the “80 Greatest Redskins.”

The professional paths of DeSean Jackson and Clinton Portis have intertwined over the years. Jackson, a dynamic wide receiver, played for the Washington Redskins from 2014 to 2016, overlapping with Portis’s tenure. This shared history in Washington is likely part of the reason that Portis is now in charge of the running game in Jackson’s first season in HBCU football.

Since retiring from the NFL, Clinton Portis has faced some personal and legal challenges. Despite these issues, Portis has remained connected to football, sharing his experiences and insights through various media appearances. His journey underscores the difficulties athletes may face in transitioning to life after the conclusion of their playing careers. Giving Portis a unique insight into life after football that could be life-changing for the HBCU athletes that Portis will mentor.

According to multiple reports, The University of Texas has hired Mark Orphey as its new safeties coach, bringing a seasoned defensive mind with deep ties to HBCU football. Orphey, a former standout at Texas Southern University, has built an impressive coaching career that now lands him in the heart of SEC country under head coach Steve Sarkisian.

HBCU Roots: Texas Southern Standout

Before embarking on his coaching journey, the Houston native was a three-year starter at cornerback at Texas Southern University, an HBCU program in Houston, Texas. As a defensive back, he earned All-Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) honors in both his junior and senior years (2009-2010). As an HBCU football player, Orphey developed the skills and football acumen that would later define his coaching style. His time at TSU instilled in him a passion for the game, as well as an understanding of what it takes to develop talent at the collegiate level. Playing in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC), Orphey faced high-level competition that prepared him for the rigors of coaching.

Coaching Journey: From HBCU Roots to the Power Five

Orphey’s coaching career began soon after his playing days ended, with a trajectory that saw him climb through various college football ranks. His early coaching stops included roles at Texas Southern and other smaller programs before gaining experience at higher-profile schools. Over the years, he developed a reputation as a strong recruiter and defensive strategist.

Before joining Texas, Orphey spent time coaching at Rutgers, where he served as the cornerbacks coach. His defensive units were known for their discipline and physicality, earning him recognition among coaching circles. Prior to Rutgers, he also had stints at Mississippi State, Utah State, and Montana State, working with defensive backs and contributing to several successful defenses.

In 2021, Orphey worked in the SEC on head coach Nick Saban’s staff at Alabama, helping to develop the defensive game plan and assisting with defensive backs. The Crimson Tide won the SEC Championship Game over Georgia, defeated Cincinnati in the Cotton Bowl Classic, and advanced to the CFP National Championship Game.

With the Longhorns, Orphey will take charge of the safeties, a critical role in Texas’ defensive scheme. Under Sarkisian, Texas has been striving to build an elite defense, and Orphey’s expertise in secondary play will be vital. His recruiting ties, particularly in Texas and the Southeast, are expected to boost the Longhorns’ ability to attract top-tier defensive backs.

Orphey’s journey from Texas Southern to one of the most prestigious programs in college football highlights the growing influence of HBCU football in the broader landscape of the sport. His hiring is another testament to the talent pipeline that HBCUs continue to produce, both on the field and in coaching ranks. As he takes on this new challenge, Texas fans will be eager to see how Orphey molds the Longhorns’ safeties into one of the best units in the SEC and beyond.

CARROLLTON, Ga. – After promoting his offensive line coach to offensive coordinator, University of West Georgia head football coach Joel Taylor has announced the hiring of Na’Shan Goddard as the Wolves’ new offensive line coach. Goddard, an NFL veteran and experienced collegiate coach, comes to Carrollton by way of HBCU South Carolina State.

“I’ve known Na’Shan for years and I’m happy to finally get a chance to work with him. He brings an abundance of experience and championships, winning two Super Bowls at the professional level,” said Taylor. “He is a tremendous relationship builder and coach and UWG is proud to have him and his family join ours.”

After seven years at South Carolina State, Goddard is thrilled to join the Wolves’ staff to continue the transition to Division I and the FCS.

“I’m excited for this opportunity here at West Georgia, and I’m thankful for the opportunity to continue to mold young men on and off the field,” said Goddard.

At SCSU, Goddard was a part of three Mid-Eastern Athletic (MEAC) titles and a 2021 Cricket Wireless Celebration Bowl Championship where the Bulldogs were crowned HBCU National Champions. In 2023, the offensive line was ranked fifth (5th) in FCS National rankings in rushing average of 220 yards per game, with over 2600 rushing yards for the season. Last season, the Bulldogs won the MEAC title and advanced to the Cricket Wireless Celebration Bowl and had three HBCU BOXTOROW All-Americans, and four First Team All-Conference selections on the offensive line with the Offensive Lineman of the Year, Nick Taiste.

Prior to joining the Bulldogs, Goddard was with Newberry for two seasons. His first season was marked by the Wolves’ third SAC championship in program history and a berth in the NCAA Division II Football Championship. Goddard’s unit was instrumental to the team establishing new school records for scoring (436 points), passing yards (3,536), completions (287), passing touchdowns (30), completion percentage (67.8), total offense (5,462 yards), all-purpose yards (6,496), and total touchdowns (61).

Goddard’s unit followed up that exceptional season with another strong showing in 2017, led by senior center, and All-Super Region selection, Dakota Mozingo. He was also named the SAC Scholar-Athlete, given to the top-performing student-athlete in the conference in academics, athletics, and community service and leadership.

A native of Dayton, Ohio, Goddard began his NFL career as an undrafted free agent with the New York Giants. He was there for three years, then had a brief stint with the New York Jets before being traded back to the Giants. He later played with Seattle and closed out his NFL career with the New Orleans Saints. He earned Super Bowl rings with the Giants in 2008 and the Saints in 2010.

Goddard also played professionally with the Calgary Stampeders in the Canadian Football League and the Florida Tuskers and Virginia Destroyers of the United Football League. He retired from pro football following the 2014 CFL season and is married to Stacy. The couple has two sons, NaSean and Naiden.
