According to a report by On3sports, Tennessee State defensive lineman Eriq George, son of former Tennessee State head coach and Heisman Trophy winner Eddie George, has decided to leave the Nashville, Tennessee, HBCU and enter the transfer portal.

Eriq George’s Collegiate Career at TSU

Standing 6 feet 2 inches and weighing 280 pounds, Eriq George emerged as a formidable presence in HBCU football over the past two years. In the 2024 season, George finished with 57 tackles, 5.5 sacks, and a forced fumble, leading the team with 12.5 tackles for loss and showcasing his ability to disrupt opposing offenses. His performance earned him second-team All-Big South-OVC honors.

High School Recruitment and Commitment to TSU

Before his collegiate career, Eriq attended Montgomery Bell Academy in Nashville, Tennessee. His decision to commit to Tennessee State was influenced by the opportunity to play under the guidance of his father, Eddie George, who was appointed TSU’s head coach in April 2021.

Eddie George’s Transition to Bowling Green University

In March 2025, Eddie George accepted the head coaching position at Bowling Green State University (BGSU), marking a return to Ohio, where he reached legendary status as a Heisman Trophy-winning running back at Ohio State. His tenure at Tennessee State ended with a 24-22 record over four seasons, including leading the Tigers to their first FCS playoff appearance since 2013.

Speculations on Eriq George’s Transfer to BGSU

Following his father’s move, speculation has naturally begun about Eriq’s potential transfer to BGSU to continue his football career under his father’s mentorship. A move that would not only reunite the father-son duo but likely bolster BGSU’s defensive line with proven talent. On March 19th, Eqiq posted on his x.com account that he had received an offer from Bowling Green. Adding a layer of validity to the speculation of the father-son reunion in Ohio.

BGSU’s Defensive Line Roster Movements

BGSU has been active in the transfer portal, enhancing its defensive front. Notably, redshirt freshman defensive lineman Marcus Moore, who stands at 6-foot-3 and weighs 310 pounds, committed to the Falcons. BGSU has also secured commitments from defensive linemen KJ Brown and Ashton Yeager for the 2025 season. The program has experienced departures at the position as well. Including defensive lineman Bam Booker entering the transfer portal.

Eriq George’s exit from TSU and the possibility of reuniting with his father at BGSU present an intriguing storyline. Especially as he continues to develop into an NFL prospect. As the situation develops, the HBCU community and college football enthusiasts alike await official announcements regarding Eriq’s next steps.

The landscape of HBCU football is shifting after Eddie George departed from Tennessee State University (TSU). Standout linebacker Sanders Ellis has entered the NCAA transfer portal, according to a social media post from Pete Nakos of On3sports. This development follows George’s exit from TSU after accepting the head coaching position at Bowling Green State University.

Sanders Ellis: A Rising Defensive Star

Sanders Ellis, a Nashville native, emerged as a defensive force in his freshman year at Tennessee State University. His 2024 season statistics are a testament to his defensive prowess:

  • Tackles: 86
  • Tackles for Loss: 15.5
  • Sacks: 2.5
  • Pass Deflections: 2
  • Fumbles Recovered: 3

These impressive numbers earned Ellis a finalist spot for the prestigious Jerry Rice Award, recognizing the top freshman at the FCS level.

Eddie George’s Departure and Its Impact

Eddie George, a former Heisman Trophy winner and NFL standout, served as TSU’s head coach for four seasons. Under his leadership, the Tigers clinched a share of the OVC-Big South Conference championship in 2024 and made an appearance in the NCAA Division I Football Championship. George’s contributions were acknowledged as he was named the Big South-Ohio Valley Conference Coach of the Year and was the runner-up for the Eddie Robinson National Coach of the Year award.

George’s decision to transition to Bowling Green was influenced by multiple factors, including financial challenges at Tennessee State University and his aspirations for long-term coaching at a higher level. He expressed mixed emotions about leaving the HBCU community, acknowledging the systemic underfunding at TSU and other public, land-grant HBCUs.

“Not everything was great, and that’s ok,” said Eddie George to the Tennessean. “It allowed me to grow and be a part of my sport again and it really challenged me as a man through and through. My love for this school, this institution, extends beyond what you could ever imagine for affording me this opportunity.

Potential Reunion at Bowling Green

Ellis’s entry into the transfer portal opens up the possibility of reuniting with Coach George at Bowling Green. Such a move would bolster the Falcons’ defensive lineup and provide Ellis with continuity under a coach familiar with his capabilities. Since announcing his entry in the transfer portal, Ellis has announced two FBS offers from Purdue and Virginia Tech. Signaling that he may be moving onto opportunities outside of his relationship with Eddie George.

Eddie George’s and Sanders Ellis’s departure from TSU highlights the challenges and opportunities within HBCU football. As Ellis explores new avenues for his athletic career, the prospect of rejoining his former coach at Bowling Green remains a storyline to watch, reflecting the interconnected nature of coaching decisions and player movements in college football.

Michael Vick just offered his former NFL teammate’s son, Donovan McNabb Jr., a spot at his HBCU program.

Donovan McNabb Jr. is a rising sophomore and is a three-star wide receiver. The 6-foot, 170-pound wide receiver from Brophy College Preparatory in Phoenix, Arizona, has also received several scholarship offers from Power Four programs such as Arizona, Iowa State, Minnesota, and Syracuse University, his father’s alma mater.

Additionally, he has been offered scholarships by Northern Arizona, Temple, Sacramento State, and Southern Mississippi.

Vick and McNabb are forever linked not only as two quarterbacks who changed the face of the quarterback position in the NFL but also as brief teammates.

Donovan McNabb, HBCU Michael Vick

When Michael Vick joined the Philadelphia Eagles in 2009, he entered a quarterback room led by Donovan McNabb, one of the franchise’s greatest passers. McNabb, a six-time Pro Bowler and the face of the Eagles for over a decade, was coming off a season where he led the team to the NFC Championship Game. Meanwhile, Vick was returning to the NFL. The Eagles took a chance on him, and McNabb played a key role in mentoring him during his transition back into professional football.

Though Vick played a limited role in the Eagles’ offense in 2009, often used in gadget plays and wildcat formations, he has credited McNabb for helping him regain his confidence and understanding of the game after two years away. McNabb publicly supported Vick’s comeback, even lobbying for the Eagles to sign him. Their time together lasted just one season, as McNabb was traded to Washington in 2010. With McNabb gone, Vick took over as the Eagles’ starting quarterback and had an MVP-caliber season, proving he still had elite talent. Their brief stint as teammates marked a unique moment in NFL history, as one great quarterback helped another resurrect his career.

Now Vick is making sure he gets an early run at Donovan McNabb Jr. to add to his HBCU football roster.

Duncan Powell’s basketball journey has been one of resilience and redemption. Once a top-100 recruit, he made headlines as the highest-ranked American-born player to sign with an HBCU when he committed to North Carolina A&T. However, injuries sidelined him for two years, casting doubt on whether he would ever return to the court. After overcoming those challenges, Powell has emerged as a top player in the ACC, scoring 20 or more points in five games this year for Georgia Tech University and earning the prestigious Lute Olson National Player of the Week award.

From HBCU Commitment to Collegiate Stardom

In November 2020, Duncan Powell, a 6’8″ forward from DeSoto, Texas, made headlines by committing to North Carolina A&T State University (NC A&T), choosing the HBCU over other prominent programs. Rated as a four-star recruit by ESPN, Powell’s decision was seen as a significant boost for NC A&T and highlighted the potential of HBCUs to attract top-tier talent.

During his tenure at NC A&T, Powell faced challenges, including injuries that limited his playtime. Despite these setbacks, he showcased his resilience and talent. Powell played in 30 games, starting four of them. He averaged 8.0 points and 5.7 rebounds per game, with a field goal percentage of 42%. Notably, in the season’s final five games, Powell’s performance peaked as he averaged 16.0 points and 9.6 rebounds per game, including double-doubles against Hampton (16 points, 15 rebounds) and Towson (18 points, 10 rebounds). His contributions earned him a spot on the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) All-Rookie team.

His commitment to the team and the broader HBCU community was a major part of his choosing to play at an HBCU, and his journey was chronicled in the HBCU Gameday Original documentary titled “Mid-Major,” which provided an intimate look into his experiences and aspirations.

Transitioning to New Horizons

After his stint at NC A&T, Powell sought new opportunities to further his basketball career. He transferred to Sacramento State for the 2023-2024 season. Powell played in 29 games, starting 23 of them. He led the team with an average of 12.1 points and 7.0 rebounds per game. Powell shot 49% from the field and 69% from the free-throw line. He also contributed 2.0 assists per game, averaging 26.5 minutes on the court. Unfortunately, his season was cut short due to injury, causing him to miss the final five games. His performance caught the attention of Georgia Tech, leading to his transfer to the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) team in June 2024.

Dominating the ACC and National Recognition

Powell’s impact at Georgia Tech has been profound. In a recent week of ACC play, he delivered standout performances that solidified his reputation as a formidable player. He averaged 24.5 points and 6.5 rebounds per game, leading the Yellow Jackets to victories over Pittsburgh and NC State. Notably, Powell set a career-high with 26 points against Pittsburgh, including six three-pointers and two rare four-point plays—a feat achieved only 23 times in Division I this season. He followed this with a double-double, recording 23 points and 10 rebounds in a commanding win over NC State.

These stellar performances earned him the Lute Olson National Player of the Week award, a testament to his hard work and dedication. The award, named after the legendary coach Lute Olson, recognizes outstanding players in Division I basketball, and Powell’s achievement highlights his significant contributions to the sport.

Reflecting on the HBCU Influence

Powell’s journey from NC A&T to national prominence underscores HBCUs’ vital role in developing athletic talent. His initial commitment to an HBCU set the foundation for his growth, resilience, and success. As more top recruits consider HBCUs, Powell’s story serves as an inspiring example of the opportunities and platforms these institutions provide.

In conclusion, Duncan Powell’s recent accolades are not just personal triumphs but also a celebration of the enduring legacy and potential of HBCUs in shaping athletes who excel at the highest levels.

In the ultra-competitive world of college football recruiting, contrasting philosophies can often emerge, especially between HBCU football programs and their Power Four Conference counterparts. An example of the difference in recruiting tactics between HBCUs and PWIs ([redominantly white institutions) involves recently hired Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU) head football coach Tremaine Jackson, who recently critiqued the recruiting tactics of big-time PWI schools, bringing up LSU’s head coach Brian Kelly and his viral internet moment from 2022.

In a candid discussion about his recruiting philosophy with Dave Campbell’s Texas Football, Coach Jackson emphasized authenticity and straightforwardness. He stated, “We don’t wine and dine guys in recruiting. We give it to you straight up because I don’t have time to de-recruit you.” Jackson further distinguished his approach by referencing a viral video in 2022 where Brian Kelly was seen dancing with a recruit who ultimately committed to Alabama. Jackson remarked, “You’re not going to catch me on Twitter with my hat backward and dancing on the 360 with guys. Brian Kelly did that, and he ain’t won a championship yet.”

This critique underscores a broader conversation about the authenticity and effectiveness of recruiting methods. Jackson’s commitment to a no-nonsense approach reflects his desire to build genuine relationships with recruits, focusing on substance over spectacle. This philosophy is deeply rooted in the values of many HBCU programs, where personal development and cultural affirmation are paramount.

Who is Tremaine Jackson

Born on August 30, 1983, in Houston, Texas, Tremaine Jackson played collegiate football as a defensive tackle at Texas Southern and later at Louisiana-Monroe.

His coaching career began in 2006 at Texas A&M–Kingsville, followed by positions at Trinity Valley Community College and his alma mater, Texas Southern University. Jackson further honed his coaching acumen with roles at Evangel University, the University of Sioux Falls—where he served as defensive coordinator—Abilene Christian University, and Texas State University.

In 2020, Jackson accepted the head coaching position at Colorado Mesa University, leading the team until 2021. He then transitioned to Valdosta State University in 2022, where he maintained the Blazer’s status as a Division II football powerhouse, with an impressive 13-0 season and an appearance in the NCAA Division II National Championship game in 2024.

His accomplishments at Valdosta State earned him the AFCA Division II National Coach of the Year award.

HBCU Tremaine Jackson Prairie View A&M

In December 2024, Tremaine Jackson was appointed as the head football coach at Prairie View A&M University. His return to an HBCU setting is particularly meaningful, reflecting a full-circle moment from his days as a Texas Southern player to leading a prominent HBCU football program. Jackson’s vision for PVAMU centers on fostering a culture of discipline, obedience, and grit—a philosophy he encapsulates with the acronym ‘DOG.’ He aims to cultivate a program that excels not only on the field but also in academic achievement and community engagement.

Coach Jackson’s emphasis on straightforward recruiting and his critique of more flamboyant tactics resonate within the HBCU community, where authenticity and cultural integrity are highly valued. His leadership at Prairie View A&M is anticipated to reinforce these principles, contributing to the rich legacy and continued prominence of HBCU football programs.

Delaware State football is at a crossroads. After a 1-11 (0-5 MEAC) season in 2024, the Hornets were outscored 446 to 212, struggled in the trenches, and lacked offensive firepower. But with new head coach DeSean Jackson at the helm, change is coming. Jackson’s first recruiting class is one of the most promising in Delaware State football history, blending FBS transfers and high-upside high school recruits. But can this group turn DSU into a competitive force in HBCU football?

One of the biggest questions is: Who replaces star running back Jaden Sutton, and can Jackson find the missing pieces to elevate the program?

HBCU DeSean Jackson Delaware State

Replacing Jaden Sutton: Can Kobe Boykin Be the Next Star RB?

The biggest loss for Delaware State heading into 2025 is Jaden Sutton, the team’s most productive offensive weapon last season.

Jaden Sutton’s 2024 Stats:

  • 1,220 rushing yards, 12 TDs, 6.6 yards per carry
  • 70% of the team’s total rushing yards
  • Longest run: 72 yards

With Sutton gone, DeSean Jackson and Delaware State must find a new RB1 to carry the offense. Enter Kobe Boykin, a transfer from Jackson State, who is expected to take over as the lead back.

Why Kobe Boykin Could Be Delaware State’s Next Star:

  • Played in a competitive HBCU football environment at Jackson State.
  • Brings speed, power, and versatility, making him a great fit in Jackson’s system.
  • Will run behind a much-improved offensive line, which should create more opportunities.

Will Marquis Gillis Bounce Back?

  • 2022 MEAC Rookie of the Year but struggled with injuries in 2024.
  • Only played two games last season but has the talent to compete for the top spot.
  • Could form a dynamic 1-2 punch with Boykin if he returns to form.

If Boykin lives up to expectations and Gillis regains his freshman-year form, Delaware State could have one of the most dangerous rushing attacks in HBCU football.

Offensive Line Overhaul: Fixing the Biggest Weakness

2024 Issue: Poor Protection & Blocking

  • 45 sacks allowed (worst in the MEAC).
  • Averaged just 309.3 total yards per game (compared to 432.3 YPG by opponents).
  • Struggled in short-yardage and red-zone situations.

2025 Solution: Bigger, Stronger Linemen

  • Elijha Payne (OL, Arizona, 6’7”) – FBS experience at left tackle.
  • Rodney Leaks (OL, Houston Christian, 6’5”) – Strong interior lineman.
  • Keyshawn Ross Jr. (OL, Huguenot HS, 6’3”) – A promising high school recruit.
  • Blake Brown (OL, East St. Louis HS, 6’4”) – Adds much-needed depth.

With these additions, expect a major improvement in both pass protection and run blocking, allowing Boykin and Gillis to thrive.

Delaware State’s Defensive Line Revamp: Bringing the Pressure

2024 Issue: No Pass Rush, Weak Run Defense

  • Only 7 sacks in 12 games (worst in the MEAC).
  • Opposing quarterbacks threw for 2,911 yards and 26 TDs.

2025 Solution: A More Physical Defensive Front

  • Alexander Cobbs (DE, San Jose State, 6’3”) – FBS transfer with pass-rushing experience.
  • Malik Jacques (DE, Venice HS, 6’5”) – A high-upside athlete who adds size on the edge.
  • Julius Valentine Jr. (DE, Charles H. Flowers HS, 6’4”) – Strong pass rusher with potential to start early.
  • Chris Trumbull (EDGE, Red Lion Christian Academy, 6’4″)Productive homegrown Delaware talent.

These additions should help Delaware State generate pressure and improve its run defense, two critical areas that cost them games in 2024.

Playmakers at Wide Receiver: Can DSU’s Passing Game Take Off?

2024 Issue: Lack of Big Plays at WR

  • No wide receiver had more than 600 yards.
  • Passing game averaged just 164.1 yards per game.

2025 Solution: New Weapons in the Passing Game

  • Antonio Gates Jr. (WR, Michigan State, 6’2”) – A former FBS player with great hands and size.
  • Jadyn Robinson (WR, Junipero Serra HS, 3? recruit) – The highest-rated recruit in DSU history.
  • Ezekiel Orozco (WR, Long Beach Poly HS) – A speedster who adds a much-needed deep threat.

With these new playmakers under the tutelage of DeSean Jackson we should expect Delaware State’s passing attack to be much more dynamic in 2025.

A New National Recruiting Pipeline for Delaware State

One of the most promising aspects of Jackson’s tenure so far is his ability to recruit across multiple regions. Instead of relying only on local talent, Delaware State is now pulling players from top football states across the country.

  • California (Long Beach Poly, Junipero Serra HS) – A pipeline for elite wide receivers and defensive backs.
  • Midwest (Michigan State, East St. Louis HS) – Bringing in FBS transfers and big offensive linemen.
  • Southeast (Georgia, Florida, Texas) – Adding speed and athleticism across multiple positions.
  • Maryland/DC Area (St. Frances Academy, Charles H. Flowers HS) – A hotbed for defensive talent.

By expanding its recruiting footprint, Delaware State is becoming a more attractive option for high-level prospects looking to play HBCU football.

Morgan State University football is building something special, and this 2025 recruiting class feels like a big step toward making the Bears a real HBCU football powerhouse. After finishing 6-6 last season, Morgan State showed flashes of what it could become, but there were still gaps to fill. Head coach Damon Wilson wasted no time addressing those needs, bringing in 29 new players, a balanced mix of 15 transfers and 14 high school signees. With a deeper roster and new talent at key positions, this team has a chance to take the next step and push for a MEAC championship in 2025.

A New Quarterback Could Change Everything

One of the most exciting battles this offseason will be who takes over at quarterback. Last season, Morgan State’s passing game had its struggles, finishing with just 11 passing touchdowns in 12 games. The Bears needed a leader who could open up the offense, and they may have found him in Raeden Oliver.

Oliver, a transfer from Rutgers and Monroe College, brings the kind of big-play ability that Morgan State has been missing. He threw for 1,429 yards and 13 touchdowns in just nine games last season, showing that he can push the ball downfield. He’s got the arm strength to stretch defenses and the mobility to extend plays, something that could bring a new dynamic to this offense. But he won’t have the job handed to him. Josiah Bushnell, a transfer from Air Force Prep, will also be in the mix, competing alongside returning quarterbacks Duce Taylor and Tahj Smith. Bushnell comes from an option-heavy system, so if he wins the job, expect more designed quarterback runs.

Whoever wins the battle will have more weapons than Morgan State University has had in years.

Bigger, Faster, Stronger at Wide Receiver

Morgan State made it clear it wanted to get bigger and faster on the outside, signing seven wide receivers, including some serious HBCU football playmakers. The Bears averaged just 10.74 yards per catch last season, struggling to create explosive plays in the passing game. That should change with the arrival of Malachi Bryant (6’3”, 210), Cam’ron Jones (6’3”, 184), and Williams Johns (6’3”, 182).

Bryant is a strong, physical receiver who will be a red-zone threat from Day 1. Jones is a true deep threat who can take the top off a defense. Johns has great body control and reliable hands, giving the Bears a balanced group of targets for their new quarterback.

For Morgan State to compete at the highest level of HBCU football, it needed to become more explosive offensively, and this class gives them the pieces to make that happen.

The Trenches Are Ready for a Fight

Football games are won and lost in the trenches, and Morgan State invested heavily in its offensive and defensive lines. The offensive line gave up 29 sacks last season, and the run game never found the consistency needed to dominate late in games. The solution? Bring in three experienced transfers—Evan Cooke (Kent State), Adorian Favors (Tennessee-Chattanooga), and Jerrod Burrell (Akron)—who can step in and contribute right away.

On defense, Morgan State lost Elijah Williams, its top pass rusher, who led the team in tackles for loss and sacks. The Bears didn’t hesitate in finding replacements, signing Christopher King (Monmouth), Logan Martinez (Texas), and De’Marion McCoy (Lafayette). These three bring a combination of power and speed, making Morgan’s defensive line stronger and more aggressive heading into next season.

Rebuilding the Secondary with Size and Speed

The secondary took a hit with the graduation of Carlvainsky Decius, one of the team’s best cornerbacks. He was a shutdown presence, and replacing him was a must. Morgan found the answer in Hiroshi Carr (Air Force) and Kimani Stafford (College of San Mateo). Carr is 6’2” and plays with physicality, while Stafford is a smooth, athletic corner who can run with anyone.

Last season, Morgan’s defense allowed 2,050 passing yards, and teams found success attacking the secondary in key moments. With these new additions, the Bears have a chance to be much stronger against the pass in 2025.

The Right Blend of Transfers and Young Talent

The beauty of this HBCU football recruiting class is how it blends immediate impact players with long-term development pieces. The 15 transfers bring experience and leadership, while the 14 high school signees provide the future foundation of the program. This approach allows Morgan to compete now while also building for sustained success.

Some of these new faces will need to make an impact right away, including:

  • Raeden Oliver (QB, Monroe College/Rutgers) – Likely to be the starting quarterback and bring a new dimension to the offense.
  • Malachi Bryant (WR, 6’3”, 210) – A big, physical receiver who could be a go-to target in the red zone.
  • Cam’ron Jones (WR, 6’3”, 184)Deep threat who will help improve the passing game’s explosiveness.

  • Hiroshi Carr (DB, Air Force, 6’2”, 190) – A physical corner who can match up with bigger receivers.

A New Chapter for Morgan State Football

This isn’t just another recruiting class—this is a class built to compete for a MEAC championship. With a quarterback battle that could change the offense, bigger and faster receivers, an improved offensive line, and a stronger defense, Morgan State is building a team that can make noise in HBCU football.

The pieces are in place. The talent is there. Now, it’s all about putting it together on the field. If these newcomers step up the way the coaching staff expects, Morgan State could be one of the most dangerous teams in the MEAC next season.

HBCU football fans, keep an eye on the Bears. Morgan State University is coming.

Michael Vick’s tenure as head coach at Norfolk State began with a strong statement on National Signing Day, as the Spartans unveiled a 30-player recruiting class filled with talent from across the country — and a rival HBCU.

The former NFL star and Virginia native wasted no time using his connections and football pedigree to bring in a mix of high school prospects and seasoned transfers, many of whom arrived from other HBCU programs. With this class, Vick made it clear that he intends to position Norfolk State as a major player in HBCU football.

Vick’s recruiting strategy emphasized strengthening the roster with experienced college players. Out of the 30 signees, 22 were mid-year enrollees, giving them the opportunity to integrate into the program ahead of the fall season. Transfers from across the HBCU landscape bolstered Norfolk State’s depth, including linebacker Jaden Kelly from Arkansas-Pine Bluff and wide receiver Kymari Gray from Hampton. Gray was one of five players to make the move from Hampton to Norfolk State, a development that adds extra fire to the Battle of the Bay rivalry.

Offensive linemen Tyler Leinberger and Guan Price II, along with defensive back Armand Vinson and wide receiver Abe Williams, also left Hampton for Norfolk State, giving Vick’s team key reinforcements on both sides of the ball.

Vick’s focus on recruiting talent within Virginia was evident, as 11 players from the Commonwealth signed with the Spartans. However, his reach extended well beyond state lines, pulling in transfers from programs like Syracuse, William & Mary, Youngstown State, and South Florida. The Spartans also secured a new quarterback, Israel Carter, a former three-star recruit from USF who brings athleticism and potential to Vick’s offensive system.

The importance of building a strong defensive front was evident in the recruitment of multiple defensive linemen, including Florida Memorial transfer Kahlil Bradford and Chowan’s Major Dillard. Norfolk State also added depth at linebacker with the addition of Alcorn State’s Stemarion Edwards, a proven tackler with HBCU experience.

UPDATE: This story was originally reported that Chris Trumbull had flipped his commitment from Jackson State to Delaware State. Since the original reporting, we have seen credible commentary online to suggest that there may not have been an offer in place from Jackson State, despite the player’s posts suggesting otherwise. We have updated the information in the post to reflect this new information.

Chris Trumbull, a standout defensive player from Red Lion Christian Academy in Bear, Delaware, has decided to stay in his home state to play for Delaware State and first-year HBCU head coach DeSean Jackson.

Trumbull’s Decision

Trumbull announced his commitment to Jackson State on February 2. However, just a few days later, he reconsidered his decision and officially decommitted on February 5 with a post on X (formerly Twitter):

After talking with my family, coaches, and friends, I have made a decision to decommit from Jackson State University. This decision wasn’t easy for me to make. I want to thank the JSU coaches for believing in me and giving me this opportunity. I am truly grateful and thank the JSU fans for showing me love. This decision is what’s best for me moving forward. Please respect my decision.”

On February 6, Trumbull announced that had committed to the Hornets, stating:

“Change of plans, I’m staying home! LET’S WORK!”

A Key Addition for Delaware State

Trumbull is considered one of the top defensive players in the state of Delaware and he played a major role in Red Lion Christian Academy’s success, helping the team reach the Delaware 2A State Semifinals. As a senior he compiled 120 total tackles, 27 tackles for loss, and 13 sacks, making him a key defensive presence. His decision to play for Delaware State strengthens the team’s defensive line and adds a proven playmaker to the Hornets’ roster.

The Growing Influence of HBCU Football

Trumbull’s desire to play for DeSean Jackson at Delaware State while having offers from schools like Syracuse, Toledo, and Memphis, highlights the increasing competitiveness of the HBCU football brand.

ORANGEBURG, SC – South Carolina State head coach Chennis Berry announced Wednesday (Feb. 5th), the signing of sixteen (16) HBCU football prospects to national letters of intent (NLI) on National Signing Day. The class includes eight (8) transfers and eight (8) newcomers. This year’s class features five (5) signees from South Carolina, seven (7) Georgia, two (2) from Florida, one from Kentucky and one from North Carolina.

Three defensive backs, two running backs, three defensive linemen, three offensive linemen, three wide receivers, one quarterback, and one place kicker, make up the 2025 National Signing Day class.

“Go Dogs! It’s a great day to be a Bulldog,” said Berry. “As a staff, we were very intentional about this 2025 signing class as we blanketed the states of South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, and Florida to find the right fit of student-athletes for our culture.

“Our coaching staff did an amazing job of building relationships with the coaches in those areas, and from that time, we were able to sign a really good class that we feel super excited about as we prepare for the 2025 season”, continued Berry. “We are pleased with our start, as we signed eight dynamic high school players, as well as eight explosive transfers, all of whom fit our culture, our vision, our discipline as well as our process. “But, we are not done yet! This is only the beginning! Let’s get it. Go Dogs!”

Along with the new recruits, Berry will return All-MEAC performers on both sides of the football, including wide receiver Justin Smith-Brown, and defensive lineman Ashaad Hall, who ranked among the top players in the nation at his position.

In his first year at the helm of the Bulldog football program, Chennis Berry became the only coach in school history to guide his team to a conference championship in their first season. Along with making his mark in SC State Football history, Berry earned numerous accolades along the way, among them AFCA Coach of the Year, MEAC Coach of the Year, and a third straight selection to the HBCU Legacy Bowl coaching staff. His achievements included coaching the MEAC Offensive Lineman of the Year, MEAC Offensive Player of the Year, and HBCU+ National Player of the Year. The Bulldogs finished the season ranked #24 in Stats Perform FCS Top 25 poll, and compiled the top academic mark, — a 3.04 overall G.P.A — during the fall semester.

Jackson State University football program continues to reload its roster with talent after winning the 2024 Celebration Bowl. Their latest high-profile transfer is former University of Southern California (USC) and San Diego State (SDSU) running back Kenan Christon. Known for his elite speed and versatility, Christon’s decision to join the Tigers is another major win for head coach T.C. Taylor and the reigning HBCU national champions, who have already signed a handful of former FBS talent.

Elite Speed Meets HBCU Excellence

Before making his mark at the collegiate level, Christon was one of the top high school athletes in the country. The San Diego native was a four-star recruit by ESPN and ranked as the No. 30 running back nationally in the 2019 recruiting class. However, his biggest claim to fame was his track speed, where he dominated California’s track and field scene.

At Madison High School, Christon won both the 100m (10.30) and 200m (20.65) titles at the 2019 California State Championships, becoming just the third athlete in history to achieve the sprint double. His track dominance earned him the 2019 Gatorade Boys Track and Field Athlete of the Year for California. On the football field, he racked up over 3,000 rushing yards and 36 touchdowns, making him one of the most dynamic playmakers in his class.

From USC to SDSU to Thee I Love

Christon initially committed to USC, where he showed flashes of brilliance in 2019, rushing for 373 yards and two touchdowns while adding 126 receiving yards and three receiving scores. He also earned Pac-12 Freshman of the Week honors after a 103-yard rushing debut against Arizona.

After limited opportunities at USC, Kenan Christon transferred to San Diego State, where he led the Aztecs with 910 all-purpose yards in 2024. A true dual-threat back and return specialist, Christon was named an All-Mountain West Honorable Mention as a kick returner.

HBCU Jackson State University Kenan Christon
Why Jackson State?

Jackson State is fresh off a dominant 28-7 Celebration Bowl victory over South Carolina State and is reloading for a run at back-to-back Celebration Bowl championships. Coach T.C. Taylor has made it clear that the Tigers will continue to attract top-tier talent, and Christon’s arrival only reinforces that message.

What This Means for Jackson State and the SWAC

With Kenan Christon in the backfield, Jackson State University now has a home-run hitter to replace Irv Mulligan, who racked up 1,919 yards and 18 touchdowns in two seasons as the Tiger’s bell-cow running back. Christon’s ability to impact the game as a rusher, receiver, and returner makes him a nightmare for SWAC defenses.

Jackson State is not resting on its Celebration Bowl title—they are reloading for another HBCU championship run. Below is a list of some of Jackson State’s top transfers heading into the 2025 season.

DB Vernorrious Chaney, Macon, MS – Southern Miss
CB Khmauri Rogers, Lexington, MS – Mississippi State

South Carolina State University, a cornerstone program in HBCU football, has turned to transfer quarterback Amari Jones to guide them into a new era. After finishing as runners-up in the 2024 Celebration Bowl, the Bulldogs are rebuilding their roster with hopes of returning to the top of the HBCU football world. Jones, a 6’3”, 225-pound redshirt junior, is expected to step into the leadership role left vacant by the departure of standout quarterback Eric Phoenix.

Jones joins South Carolina State after transferring from FIU, where he spent two seasons without seeing game action. While his collegiate experience has been limited, his high school career at Bradford High School in Starke, Florida, highlighted his potential. As a senior, Jones threw for 2,287 yards and 19 touchdowns while rushing for 371 yards and seven scores. His standout season earned him Florida 1A Player of the Year honors, along with school records for single-season and single-game passing yards.

HBCU South Carolina State University

Now at South Carolina State, Jones has an opportunity to make his mark at one of the most respected programs in HBCU football. Known for their strong defense and physical style of play, the Bulldogs have long thrived on balanced, disciplined football. For Jones, stepping into the MEAC and leading this championship-caliber program comes with significant expectations. His size, athleticism, and dual-threat capabilities make him a strong candidate to fill the role and help the team compete at the highest level.

The Bulldogs, under the guidance of Head Coach Chinnis Berry, remain focused on returning to the Celebration Bowl and reclaiming their championship status. As Jones takes on this challenge, he has the chance to cement his place in South Carolina State University’s storied history. Fans across the HBCU football community will be watching closely to see if Jones can rise to the occasion and lead the Bulldogs back to glory.

William Davis, a standout safety from Virginia Union, has transferred to West Virginia University, making the leap from HBCU football to the FBS Power 4. The South Boston, Virginia native brings a proven track record of production and versatility to the Mountaineers’ secondary.

Davis, a 5-foot-10, 195-pound junior, excelled during his time at Virginia Union, an HBCU competing in Division II football. Over his two seasons as a starter for the Panthers, Davis amassed 115 tackles, 25 for loss, nine interceptions, four sacks, and two forced fumbles. In 2024, he earned all-conference honors with 56 tackles, 11.5 tackles for loss, two interceptions, and a sack, further solidifying his reputation as one of the top defenders in the CIAA.

On December 21, 2024, Davis entered the NCAA transfer portal and quickly drew interest from FBS programs. He took an official visit to West Virginia on January 10, 2025, and committed to the Mountaineers shortly afterward. Davis is part of a transfer class aimed at bolstering depth in the secondary. He joins three other safeties as part of the 2025 recruiting cycle, giving the Mountaineers 14 scholarship players at the position. However, only two have significant game experience, leaving room for Davis to make an immediate impact.

Davis’s ability to play multiple roles in the secondary adds valuable flexibility to the West Virginia University defense. Known for his tackling and disruption behind the line of scrimmage, he is expected to compete for playing time in his final collegiate season at a Power 4 school, the biggest stage in college football.

The transfer marks a significant step for Davis, transitioning from HBCU football at Virginia Union to the national stage of the FBS. His journey highlights the talent pipeline between HBCUs and larger programs, showcasing the impact of players like Davis on both levels of college football.

Delaware State University football is undergoing a major transformation under new head coach DeSean Jackson, and one of the first players to join this new era is wide receiver Anthony James Jr. The former HBCU wide receiver from Morgan State player has transferred to conference rival Delaware State, drawn by the chance to learn from Jackson, a former NFL star known for his elite skills and game-breaking ability.

James explained that his decision to transfer was about more than just football. “I want to learn the way he thinks,” James said. “How does he look at the defense? How does he know what’s going on? Everybody has different ways of coaching, and I just want to see how he thinks about his routes.” For James, it’s about personal growth and development, and he is eager to compete in his new environment.

Other members of DeSean Jackson’s first recruiting class include some of the most talented players Delaware State has seen in years. Wide receiver Jadyn Robinson, a three-star recruit from Junipero Serra High School in Gardena, CA, is among them. Robinson, who had scholarship offers from Grambling, Texas, Arizona State, and Syracuse, is more than likely the highest-rated recruit in recent history for the program. His decision to join Delaware State over schools with long-established football traditions is a testament to the excitement Jackson is building around the Hornets.

The recruiting class also includes running back Kobe Boykin from Los Angeles, a three-star talent transferring from Jackson State, and 6’7” offensive lineman Elijah Payne, who started his career at Arizona. Both players bring size and skill to key positions. Running back Derek Boyd from Crenshaw, CA, and safety Tracy Foe Jones from Long Beach Poly High School round out a group of athletes Jackson is bringing to Delaware State from the West Coast, establishing a new pipeline for the HBCU program.

James, Robinson, and the rest of this talented group are part of Jackson’s vision to elevate Delaware State football and raise the program’s profile in HBCU sports. “He’s going to bring attention. He’s going to bring exposure,” James said about Jackson. The new head coach’s ability to recruit top-tier talent, coupled with his NFL pedigree, has created a sense of optimism around the program.

HBCU DeSean Jackson Delaware State University

With a revamped roster and a fresh approach, Delaware State University is poised to turn heads in the MEAC this season. The combination of experienced transfers and high-caliber recruits like Robinson is a clear sign that the Hornets are ready to compete at a higher level. HBCU football fans will be watching closely as Delaware State’s new chapter unfolds.

Norfolk State University head coach Michael Vick has his first quarterback commitment as an HBCU coach— and its a former Alabama football star from the prep ranks.

Earl Woods III, who started his career at Kennesaw State, has committed to Norfolk State University. He made his announcement via Twitter/X on Sunday.

“Locked in,” Woods tweeted with a photo of him in a Norfolk State jersey, mentioning his new coach.

The dynamic dual-threat quarterback from Hueytown, Alabama, made a name for himself during a stellar high school career.

At Hueytown High School, he earned Gatorade Alabama Football Player of the Year honors in 2021 after a record-breaking junior season with 3,072 passing yards, 32 touchdowns, and 2,123 rushing yards with 35 scores. He led his team to the state title game, earning First Team All-State recognition, the Class 6A Back of the Year Award, and a finalist spot for Alabama’s Mr. Football.

His senior year saw continued success, with 1,825 passing yards, 24 touchdowns, and 1,527 rushing yards with 22 scores. Woods starred in the Alabama vs. Mississippi All-Star Game, securing a comeback win with his versatility. He had offers from Army, Middle Tennessee, Navy, Austin Peay and Central Arkansas.

At Jacksonville State in 2023, Woods transitioned to the college level, appearing in three games and recording 24 rushing yards. In 2024, he entered the transfer portal, landing at Norfolk State University where he will be coached by Michael Vick.

Listed at 5’10, 180 pounds, Woods isn’t the biggest quarterback around. Then again, neither was Michael Vick. We’ll see what this duo can do in the HBCU ranks.

The collegiate football journey of South Carolina State playmaker Caden High is a testament to perseverance and ambition, as the once Division II HBCU football player has reportedly committed to the University of Stanford, an ACC school, after a standout season for the MEAC champion Bulldogs.

From his early days at Division II HBCU Benedict College under Coach Chinnis Berry to moving with his head coach to the FCS level at South Carolina State, and now transferring to Stanford in the ACC, High’s journey from Division II HBCU to Stanford reflects the popular addage that “you can go anywhere from an HBCU.”

Standing at 5’10” and 160 pounds, the junior from Loganville, GA, and graduate of Grayson High School, will now have an opportunity to shine on one the biggest stage in college football.

Foundation at HBCU Benedict College

Caden High began his collegiate career at Benedict College, an HBCU in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC). As a freshman in 2023, he recorded 781 receiving yards and nine touchdowns on 47 receptions, showcasing his ability to be a game-changer. Highlights from his time at Benedict include:

  • 156 receiving yards against Albany State:
  • 70-yard touchdown against Shaw:

Coach Chinnis Berry saw High’s potential and made him a cornerstone of the offense. When Berry became head coach at South Carolina State, another prominent HBCU football program, High followed, continuing their successful partnership.

Thriving at South Carolina State

At South Carolina State, High elevated his game further. In the 2024 season, he became one of the top offensive players in HBCU football and the FCS, recording 908 receiving yards and seven touchdowns on 62 catches. His standout performances included:

  • 152 receiving yards and a touchdown vs. North Carolina A&T: A career-best game that highlighted his dominance.
  • 70-yard reception vs. Tennessee Tech: His longest catch of the season, showcasing his explosiveness.
  • Two touchdowns vs. North Carolina Central: A clutch performance in a critical MEAC matchup.

Caden High also contributed on special teams, further proving his versatility. His growth under Berry’s guidance solidified his reputation as one of the most dynamic players in HBCU football.

A Leap to the ACC with Stanford

After another stellar season, High announced his decision to enter the transfer portal, in an emotional tweet. High thanked South Carolina State and its fans:

“First and foremost, I want to extend my deepest gratitude to Bulldog Nation for the unwavering support I’ve received during my time here. It has truly been an honor to wear the Bulldog uniform. After much prayer and thoughtful conversations with my family, I’ve made the decision to enter the transfer portal with two years of eligibility remaining.”

Stanford offers High the chance to compete against some of the nation’s top programs in the ACC. Known for his speed, precision route running, and ability to make big plays, High is expected to become a key part of the Cardinal’s offense.

Career Highlights

High’s journey through college football is filled with memorable achievements:

  • 2023 at Benedict College (HBCU):
    • 47 receptions, 781 yards, 9 touchdowns
    • Career-best game: 156 yards vs. Albany State

Two-sport stars are rare in HBCU sports, but it looks like North Carolina A&T might have a live one.

MyKell Harvey, a basketball and football star at Northside High School in Roanoke, Virginia has committed to North Carolina A&T in and is hoping to play both sports.

Harvey played both wide receiver and running back at Northside High School on the football squad and is a 6’2 guard for the basketball program.

North Carolina A&T football offered Harvey under previous head coach Vincent Brown Sr. and continued to recruit him as the program transitioned to new head coach Shawn Gibbs. NC A&T assistant Nathan Poole, a member of the staff under Sam Washington as well as Vincent Brown, has remained on as recruiting coordinator through the change.

MyKell Harvey, North Carolina A&T

Harvey says he plans on walking on to the men’s basketball program at North Carolina A&T.

We asked him why he chose the HBCU and this is what he said:

“I know they haven’t had a winning record the past two Years and the fans haven’t been too happy and I wanted to bring back that winning mentality for them. The coaches told me I reminded them of their best player when they were watching my film and I could be a big time playmaker in their offense. The coaches seemed like they really wanted me there and coach (Shawn) Gibbs told me he wouldn’t mind me playing basketball after the season is over and that was something that I’d like to do.”

Harvey says he plans to walk on to the basketball program.

One of the most recent two-way players in HBCU sports also competed at North Carolina A&T. Denzel Keys was a star wide receiver during the school’s football run under Rod Broadway and was also a solid contributor on the men’s basketball squad.

The post DeSean Jackson creating a West Coast to HBCU pipeline appeared first on HBCU Gameday.

Less than a week after being officially named head coach at Delaware State, former NFL star DeSean Jackson is creating a pipeline from the West Coast to the HBCU.

Jackson, who hails from Los Angeles, has received multiple commits from California since his hire was announced. Travis Clark, who coached with Jackson at Long Beach Wilson High School this past season has been instrumental in securing the commitments.

First there was running back Kobe Boykin, a Los Angeles product who spent last season at Jackson State. Boykin hit the portal over the weekend, and committed to Delaware State shortly after announcing his entry into the portal. Boykin is from Los Angeles.

Boykin was considered a three-star talent, and getting him to jump from the newly-minted HBCU national champion to a team that has won two games in two years.

A few days later Jackson came up with another commit from out west — this time a big man. Offensive lineman Elijah Payne is a 6’7 player who started his career at Arizona. The Las Vegas, Nev. native prepped at Sierra Canyon High School in Chatsworth, Calif. He Played guard and tackle as a member of the 10-5 overall and 4-1 in conference varsity team in 2022. Payne was a three-star prospect with offers from Arizona State, Arkansas, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Miami, Nevada, Oregon, Oregon State, UNLV, and Utah State.

DeSean Jackson, HBCU, Delaware State University
DeSean Jackson and Travis Clark have hit the transfer portal running.

Another commitment came in from former Hawaii running back Derek Boyd, who hails from Crenshaw, CA.

“Today, I proudly commit to Delaware State University, a place where I’ll grow as both an athlete and an individual,” Boyd wrote. “I’m excited to join a program with a rich history, led by hall-of-fame coach DeSean Jackson, whose legacy inspires me to push myself every day.”

Another addition is Tracy Foe Jones, a free safety out of Long Beach Poly High School.

It’s quite clear from his short time at he helm at Delaware State that DeSean Jackson is creating an HBCU pipeline to the west coast — something that has historically been difficult to do. It will be interesting to see how it works out moving forward.

Just a few years ago, it was unheard of for players from Florida State University (FSU) to “cross the tracks” and come to play football at Florida A&M University (FAMU). However, with the advent of the transfer portal, it has gone from taboo to normal.

The most high-profile player to transfer from FSU to FAMU was offensive lineman Jalen Goss. Goss was an All-SWAC selection at tackle and played a leadership role on the Rattlers once he settled in.

The newest name to the “Tallahassee Transfer Portal” is defensive lineman Xavier Perkins. Perkins played sparingly for Florida State in 2024 but remains a highly respected talent after his stellar high school career. The Tampa, FL native is a graduate of Berkeley Prep, where he was an All-American. He was invited to the 2023 Blue-Grey All-American Bowl and Georgia vs. Florida High School Showcase. At Berkeley, Perkins recorded 63 tackles, including 21 for loss with 13 sacks, three fumble recoveries, one forced fumble, and nine quarterback hurries while playing 30 varsity games at Berkeley Prep.

FAMU Florida State transfer portal

Head coach James Colzie III, a Florida State graduate, is rebuilding his defense, which was lacking in the ability to stop the run last season. Prior to last season, the Rattlers’ “Dark Cloud” defense was ranked No.2 nationally. After the departure of defensive coordinator Ryan Smith, who was the mastermind of the defense, the defense is being rebuilt by new defensive coordinator Milton Patterson. A big part in the success of the defense will be putting the talent on the field and Perkins could play a pivotal role in that effort.

Standing at 6-4, 237 lbs, Perkins, known as a fierce edge rusher, could be the missing piece for the Rattlers getting a significant pass rush. Not since the departure of Indianapolis Colts edge rusher Isaiah Land have the Rattlers possessed that threat. Marshall Transfer Davion Westmoreland began to show signs of being that guy at the end of last season. Adding two threats to harass quarterbacks is a key component of the Rattlers bouncing back from their 7-5 season.

Trayvis Hunter, younger brother of Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter, has now received two offers from HBCUs — including Jackson State, where his brother made history.

The younger Hunter announced via X that he received his first offer from Tennessee State University earlier on Monday. TSU is coached by former Heisman Trophy winner and NFL star Eddie George. Shortly after, Trayvis reported another offer — this time from Jackson State. JSU is coming off a thrilling win in the Celebration Bowl to claim the HBCU national title, adding even more intrigue to Trayvis’ recruitment.

Trayvis Hunter is a sophomore at Effingham County High School in Springfield, GA. He plays wide receiver and stands at 5’7, 140 pounds.

Trayvis’ Jackson State offer carries an extra layer of significance. His older brother Travis Hunter famously committed to JSU under then-head coach Deion Sanders, shocking the college football world by flipping from Florida State. Travis Hunter, the second-highest-rated prospect in the class of 2022, played one season at Jackson State, helping lead the Tigers to a SWAC championship and a 12-1 record before transferring to Colorado alongside Sanders.

Trayvis recently visited Florida State University, a program that once seemed destined to land his brother. Reflecting on his decision to choose an HBCU over a Power Five school, Travis Hunter explained his motivation during an appearance on *The Pivot* podcast.

“I know it’s a bit of sacrifice,” Hunter said. “But one day my brothers and sisters might not go D1. So I still got to shine a light on someone else. And that was my main focus and that’s what I did.”

While Trayvis Hunter does not yet have the national profile his older brother did, he’s still early in his high school career. With offers from Tennessee State and Jackson State already in hand, he has an opportunity to carve out his own path and shine a spotlight on HBCU football once again.

NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State men’s basketball team signed the first recruit of its 2025 class and a highly-touted New York City guard prospect is headed to HBCU basketball in the MEAC. 2025 combo guard Ahmad Torrence made things official with Norfolk State on Thursday, maintaining a high standard for the future of Norfolk State basketball under head coach Robert Jones.

https://twitter.com/Showout__ahmad/status/1850977391658561547

“To get a player of Ahmad’s caliber, three-star rated recruit and a highly ranked player in the state of New York, it’s a huge get for us,” Jones said. “Ahmad’s versatility and size combined with his IQ being a coach’s son should help him have an outstanding career as a Spartan! He should be an impact player from day one.”

Like his future head coach, Torrence is a product of New York City attending the Thurgood Marshall Academy for Learning and Social Change. Measuring in at 6-5, 195 pounds, he’s wowed HBCU scouts with his versatility and composure. Rated as a three-star recruit and the seventh-ranked player in New York by 247sports.com, Torrence stands as one of the top prospects of Jones’ recruiting resume.

Torrence touted offers from the likes of Northern Illinois, Fordham, and Manhattan before selecting the Spartans.

Across his junior season, Torrence averaged 17.9 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 5.3 assists per game. Reaching the 500-point mark in just one year, he led Thurgood Marshall to a Manhattan Borough Championship title.

About Ahmad Torrence

Ahmad Torrence is a 6-foot-5 combo guard out of Harlem. N.Y., native, who also suited up for the NY Lightning AAU program, held offers from Manhattan, Norfolk State, Fordham, Northern Illinois and Chicago State, per VerbalCommits.com.

Plus, Torrence held an offer from the now-defunct St. Francis Brooklyn Terries, who no longer have an athletic program.

Torrence averaged 17.85 points, 6.35 rebounds, and 5.3 assists per game in 14 regular-season Public School Athletic League (PSAL) contests. He added 15.75, 5.50 boards, and 6.25 helpers per tilt in four postseason games.

Norfolk State emerged as the favorite late in the recruiting process. Torrence’s skill set aligns well with the Spartans’ style, and he’ll benefit from the New York-to-Norfolk connection already in place. With strong upside on both ends of the court, this commitment holds exciting potential for both the player and the program.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Under the direction of Head Coach Reggie Theus, Bethune-Cookman Men’s Basketball announced a significant roster overhaul for the fast-approaching 2024-25 season, announcing a total of 11 new players while retaining four contributors from last year’s squad that qualified for the 2024 Ro College Basketball Invitational (CBI) in Daytona Beach, Florida. It marked the second postseason berth for the Wildcats in program history, and the first since 2011, when B-CU participated in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT).

Head Coach Reggie Theus, who also serves as the university’s athletics director, has assembled a diverse group of talent, blending together experienced transfers who look to bolster the Wildcats’ lineup.

Theus expressed optimism about the team’s potential for the upcoming year, hoping to stem from last year’s success both in and out of the conference.

“We’ve brought in a mix of experience and young talent that we believe will elevate our program,” commented Theus. “Our program has improved with each year that I have been on campus, but our goal remains the same — to build on last season’s success and compete for the SWAC championship. And I believe this crop of young men will bring exactly what we need in order to try and do just that — win a SWAC title.”

The new signings include the following:

    • Brayon Freeman, a 6-foot-2 guard from Washington D.C., transfers from Coastal Carolina. The three-level scorer averaged 7.0 points this past season after stints at Rhode Island (14.3 PPG in 22-23) and George Washington (10.3 PPG in 21-22).
    • Gianni Hunt, a 6-foot-4 graduate student transferring in from CSUN, is a versatile point guard that started 21 games last season for the Matadors, averaging 10.2 points per game, 4.4 rebounds and 4.0 assists across the campaign. The leader on the floor brings real Division I experience to B-CU, led by a solid foundation defensively.
    • Trey Thomas, a 6-foot-2 guard from Washington, D.C., transfers from Hampton University (6.6 points per game in 23-24), bringing a scoring threat with experience, leadership, and a hyper-competitive spirit to the backcourt.
    • Antwann Jones, a 6-foot-6 athletic scoring wing originally from Orlando, brings Power Five experience after playing at UCF this past season (4.3 points per game) along with Memphis, Creighton, and Louisiana, respectively. Jones is a matchup nightmare who has the ability to play multiple positions on either side of the ball.
    • Kalil Camara, a 6-foot-7 forward transferring in from West Virginia State, arrives as a graduate student with size out of the Bronx, New York. In addition to his length, Camara shot 46.1 percent from beyond the arc this past season.
    • Jarrell Love, a 6-foot-7 athletic forward from Fort Worth, Texas, transfers from Baton Rouge CC where showcased his versatility with 10.8 points per game and 5.3 rebounds at the JUCO level.
    • William Gonzalez, a 6-foot-5 small forward from Chicago, brings great upside with his shooting as he arrives as a freshman from Curie High where he turned in double-digits scoring average as a senior.
    • Jesus Carralero-Martin, a 6-foot-7 Spanish forward, joins after stints at Campbell (10.6 points, 5.2 rebounds and 2.6 assists in 22-23) and most recently Missouri. The point forward brings an understanding of the game with the ability to contribute in a number of ways with his scoring, passing, and basketball IQ.
    • Daniel Rouzan, a 6-foot-8 junior forward from Las Vegas, is a back to the basket and face-up threat that arrives to Daytona Beach from Manhattan College, where he played and started in 27 games a season ago averaging 11.4 points per game with 4.6 rebounds while shooting 52.7 percent from the field. His ability to contribute from multiple positions adds another level of versatility to the floor for B-CU.
    • Jerome Beya, a 6-foot-9 five-man from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, transferring in from Tennessee Tech, brings international experience and shot-blocking ability to the frontcourt. The hyper-athletic Beya also adds a talented lob threat to the Wildcats arsenal.
    • David Onanina, a 6-foot-8 center from Yaoundé, Cameroon, is transferring into Bethune-Cookman from Eastern Kentucky after two seasons with the program, adding height and rebounding ability on the inside. The strong, athletic Onanina also brings an excellent touch around the rim for a big man.

Bethune-Cookman basketball also returns senior guard Reggie Ward Jr., after the Chicago native amassed 9.6 points per game last year, arriving from Riverside CC. It will be a reunion, of sorts, with incoming freshman Gonzalez from their days at Curie High. Seneca Willoughby, a rising junior from Philadelphia, also returns to the Wildcats backcourt, along with Simeon WomackMason Dorsey also returns for the Maroon and Gold, as the 6-foot-5 guard from Los Angeles saw limited time as a true freshman in 2023-24.

Reggie Theus and Wildcat basketball aim to improve upon their performance from the previous season, where they secured a spot in the semifinals of the SWAC Tournament for the first time in school history.

“We entered the offseason tasked with essentially retooling our entire roster,” Reggie Theus said. “Our staff has worked incredibly hard to address a number of different areas this summer, and I think we have been able to bring in what we need in these key areas. The opportunity to coach this team with the talent we’ve brought in, it’s exciting to think about, and I can’t wait to get out on the court with these guys.”

    ]]>
The Florida A&M University (FAMU) football team roster provides valuable insights into the program’s recruiting strategy, highlighting key geographic regions, high schools, and the types of players the coaching staff targets. Here’s a breakdown of the recruiting patterns based on the current roster:

    1. Geographic Focus

    Florida Dominance:

    • Home State Emphasis: FAMU’s roster heavily leans on in-state talent, with a significant number of players hailing from Florida. Key cities like Miami, Tampa, Orlando, and Jacksonville are well-represented, which aligns with the program’s strategy of tapping into the rich football talent within the state. This approach not only strengthens local ties but also reduces recruiting costs and fosters a strong fanbase.
    • Regional Hotspots: Miami leads the way with a notable presence on the roster, including standout players like Jalen Rogers and Kelvin Dean. Tampa and Orlando are also key recruiting areas, with players like James Ash and Aric Horne. These cities are known for their competitive high school football programs, making them prime recruiting grounds.

    Out-of-State Reach:

    • Georgia and Alabama: FAMU extends its recruiting efforts into neighboring states, particularly Georgia and Alabama. Atlanta and Griffin in Georgia, along with Bessemer in Alabama, have provided talented players like Jeremiah Pruitte and Jaylen Ward. This indicates a targeted approach to recruiting in the Southeast, where football talent is abundant.
    • Expanding Nationwide: While the roster is predominantly Southeastern, FAMU also recruits players from further afield, such as California, Ohio, and even international locations like Budapest, Hungary. This broader reach suggests the program is looking to diversify its talent pool and bring in players with different experiences and skill sets.

    2. High School Pipeline

    Florida Powerhouses:

    • Miami Northwestern: This high school is a critical pipeline for FAMU, producing several players on the current roster, including Michael Marshall and Ricky Taylor. Miami Northwestern is known for its storied football program, and FAMU’s ability to recruit from this school indicates strong relationships and a focus on proven talent.
    • Tampa Area Schools: High schools like Tampa Bay Tech and Hillsborough High have also been productive sources of talent. Players from these schools, such as James Ash, contribute to the team’s strength, particularly in the trenches.

    Diverse High School Backgrounds:

    Brian Norris, FAMU, Recruiting
Brian Norris is a transfer from the University of South Florida that hails from Chiefland, FL.
    • Small Town to Big Time: FAMU also taps into smaller communities and lesser-known high schools, bringing in players like Brian Norris from Chiefland, Florida, and Corey Collier Jr. from Miami Palmetto. This approach shows the coaching staff’s ability to identify and develop talent that may be overlooked by larger programs.

    3. Transfers and Their Impact

Strategic Use of the Transfer Portal:

    • Experienced Transfers: FAMU has effectively utilized the transfer portal to bolster its roster, bringing in experienced players from Power Five conferences and other competitive programs. Notable transfers include Demorie Tate from Florida State, Jeremiah Pruitte from Colorado State, and Jalen Rogers from Tulane. These players bring high-level experience and often step into key roles on the team.
    • Position Strengthening: The transfer portal has been particularly useful in strengthening positions of need, such as defensive backs and wide receivers. The addition of players like Corey Collier Jr. (Nebraska) and Quan Lee (UCF) has added depth and competition, which is crucial for FAMU’s defensive and offensive schemes.

    4. Position Group Analysis

    Focus on Skill Positions:

    • Wide Receivers and Defensive Backs: FAMU’s recruiting emphasis on wide receivers and defensive backs is evident, with these position groups being the most populated on the roster. The depth in these areas suggests a focus on speed, athleticism, and playmaking ability, which are critical in both offensive and defensive strategies.
    • Quarterback Depth: The team has also prioritized quarterback recruitment, with multiple players vying for the starting role. The mix of homegrown talent like Trey Fisher and transfers like Daniel Richardson indicates a balanced approach to building this key position.

    Line Play Development:

    • Offensive and Defensive Line: FAMU has placed significant emphasis on developing its lines, both offensive and defensive. Recruiting larger linemen from strong high school programs, such as Cesar Reyes from Tampa and Davion Westmoreland from Griffin, GA, suggests a focus on building a strong foundation in the trenches.

    5. Recruiting Outlook

    Retention of In-State Talent:

    • Strengthening Florida Roots: FAMU’s ability to recruit and retain top talent from within Florida will continue to be crucial for its success. Maintaining strong relationships with high school coaches and being a top choice for local players will help FAMU remain competitive in the SWAC and on a national level.

    Expanding Out-of-State Influence:

    • Targeting Key Regions: While Florida remains the primary focus, expanding recruitment efforts in talent-rich areas like Georgia and Alabama, and even further afield, will diversify the roster and bring in a wider range of skills and experiences.

    Leveraging the Transfer Portal:

    • Immediate Impact Players: Continuing to utilize the transfer portal effectively will allow FAMU to address immediate needs and bring in players who can make an instant impact, particularly from Power Five programs looking for more playing time.

Overall, FAMU’s recruiting strategy reflects a balanced approach that capitalizes on Florida’s rich football talent while also reaching into neighboring states and beyond to bring in diverse and experienced players. This strategy is poised to keep the Rattlers competitive in the SWAC and position them for long-term success.

Norfolk State University has been one of the better HBCU and mid-major basketball programs of the last few years, so there is no shortage of players looking to land there.

So over the weekend, a young man name Antoine Silvers posted a commitment to the HBCU program.

“With long thoughts and dreams of playing for my hometown school I will be committing to Norfolk State University,” the initial tweet read. “Thank God, my family and everyone support on this amazing journey.”

It appeared to be the typical commitment statement, complete with the hashtag #AGTG (All Glory To God).

However, a few hours later, it was apparent that this wasn’t quite what it appeared to be.

Norfolk State University head coach Robert Jones posted a tweet on X stating that he and his staff didn’t know the young man.

“Social media is super crazy now! We don’t even know this young man, so if anyone does please let him know . SMH. I know everyone wants the song and dance of D1 but run your own race. Also FYI: you shouldn’t block the head coach of the school you “committed” too. Wow!”

HBCU, Antoine Silvers, Norfolk State University

In an interview with Dallas College, Silvers reveals that he’s from the Tidewater area but moved to Texas in high school.

“I’m from Newport News, Virginia, where growing up amidst violence made it easy to get distracted. Wanting a better future for myself and my family, we decided to move to Texas for a new start,” Silvers said. “Despite a lack of stability in high school, a close relationship with Coach Phillips at Mountain View helped me focus, and now, as a freshman, I’m trusting the process.”

Shortly after Jones posted his tweet, another tweet came from Silvers’ account, apparently looking to clear the air.

“My Name Is Ty, I trolled Antwan As a Joke by posing as Colleges coaches over a situation that me and him got into it about a while back I didn’t mean for any harm shamefulness or hate to get thrown towards him it was simply a joke,” the tweet read.

Whether it was a joke or not, it definitely caught a lot of people’s attention. Either way, it’s an unfortunate circumstance for all involved. But it wasn’t the first time and it won’t be the last time.

Patton, a 5-6 running back from Atlanta, Georgia committed to the University of Oregon in 2019 out of Woodward High School where he was an Honorable mention All-Region 4-AAAA selection as a senior.

After taking a redshirt year in 2019 and playing sparingly in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. He played in five games in 2021 but only saw action on special teams, finishing his career at Oregon having played in seven games and recording one tackle.

Cross Patton transferred to the University of Oregon in 2022 where he played in 10 games in two seasons, gaining 68 yards on 23 carries as a member of the Wolfpack.

With one year of eligibility remaining, Cross Patton heads back east to play HBCU football for head coach Raymond Woodie at Bethune-Cookman University.

By his side as always will be his No. 1 fan and father Big Boi, one-half of the legendary hip-hop duo Outkast. Big Boi was a regular at University of Nevada home games the past two seasons and he also traveled to road games at Hawaii and Iowa to show his support for his son.

“He’s been a part of my journey ever since I started playing football,” Cross Patton told Nevada Sports Net about his father’s ongoing support. “I don’t think he’s ever missed more than maybe four games my whole life. He’s been there all the way.”

Bethune-Cookman went 3-8 in 2023 and finished 5th out of 6 teams in the SWAC East. Head coach Raymond Woodie spoke to the school’s media department during the 2024 spring ball program and emphasized his focus on filling position holes with the transfer portal and his commitment to the run game. The signing of Cross Patton checks both boxes and his father’s commitment to his career will add another celebrity to the already awesome atmosphere of HBCU football in Florida.

Former Florida A&M defensive lineman Gentle Hunt has been one of the hottest names in the HBCU football transfer portal, after a back-and-forth offseason of deciding if he wanted to stay at FAMU or commit to one of his over 20 FBS offers. Hunt has made his decision and is heading play with the University of Illinois of the Big Ten Conference.

Gentle Hunt, a 5-foot-11 290-pound graduate senior from High Springs, Florida has had an active transfer portal season. His first foray into the portal came only weeks after winning an HBCU national championship with Florida A&M. Rumors of then-head coach Willie Simmons having been offered a position coach role at Duke University became red hot when Hunt dropped a “Please Respect My Decision” post on social media indicating that he was transferring from FAMU.

HBCU Gentle Hunt Big Ten FAMU HBCU football

After an infamously rocky road to naming James Colzie III as the new head coach of Florida A&M, all seemed well at FAMU as Gentle Hunt and other Rattlers decided to exit the portal and stay with the new regime in Tallahassee. But by March, he was back in the portal, looking to take his game to the next level.

“What made me enter the portal is more exposure on a bigger platform along with more resources from whichever institution I decide to transfer to,” Hunt told 24/7 Sports. “My top priority is getting to the next level I am looking to play on big stage to showcase my skill set and I want to go with a winning culture.”

While Hunt was a highly sought-after prospect at the FBS level, he was still looking for that big-time Power Four conference offer. The Second Team All-SWAC selection had offers from Kent State, Ohio, and Liberty to name a few but went into May still waiting on a P4 offer.

On May 9 reports surfaced of Gentle Hunt committing to Rice University of the Americal Athletic Conference, only to see that three days later, Hunt was said to be taking an official visit to the University of Illinois. Three days after that, on May 15, Gentle Hunt put all the rumors to rest by posting “Committed 🧡 Last Ride…” with images of himself wearing the blue and orange of the Illini.

During his three seasons playing HBCU football at FAMU, Gentle Hunt had 89 tackles, 24.0 tackles for loss, and 11.5 sacks with 69 quarterback pressures. Although he’s considered undersized for his position at the Power Four level, his high production at the FCS level makes the staff at Illinois believe he can play in the Big Ten.

Recruiting in college football all comes down to a decision. Camron Douglas and Malik Ganaway wanted to play football in the SEC. The Volunteer State natives passed on scholarship offers from HBCU football programs to walk on with the University of Tennessee in 2022. Now, the defensive duo is not only staying in their home state but is embracing their opportunity to play at the HBCU level for head coach Eddie George and Tennessee State University.

Camron Douglas and Malik Ganaway’s football careers have been mirror images of one another for the past two years. They turned down scholarships at other schools for a priority walk-on opportunity at the University of Tennessee.

Cameron Douglas, a defensive lineman from Haywood High School in Brownsville, Tennessee had offers from Vanderbilt, Memphis, and an offer from in-state HBCU Tennessee State University. But all it took was a visit to Rocky Top to make him want to stay in-state and play in the SEC.

“It’s always been a school I’ve watched and loved,” said Douglas in a 24/7 article about his commitment. Ranked as the No. 189 defensive lineman in the 2022 class and the No. 52 senior from Tennessee, the thought of Saturday afternoons in orange was too much to pass up.

The same proved true for Malik Ganaway. The 6-foot-2, 185-pound defensive back had scholarship offers from UT Martin, Alabama A&M, and Lane College. Still, visiting a Power Five football facility swayed the Trenton, Tennessee native to walk on in Knoxville.

“I went up there for a visit on (Saturday), and they showed us new improvements they are adding to (their) rehab facilities, training facilities, and the stadium. At the moment, I knew I wanted to be a part of the Vols,” Ganaway told 24/7 Sports.

Since signing to Tennessee in 2022, neither Douglas nor Ganaway saw any action on the field. They head to Nashville to join head coach Eddie George and the resurgent Tennessee State University Tigers hoping to make an impact on the field at their in-state HBCU.

After signing with TSU, Malik Ganaway sent a post on social media showing his excitement to join the culture at Tennessee State, “What we building here at TSU isn’t for everybody!!! This is where winners win at 🐅.”

If you thought the NCAA Transfer Portal was overrun already, you may want to hold on to your hat.

Athletes will soon be immediately eligible to transfer as long as they are academically eligible and in good standing at their previous school no matter how many times they have transferred, according to a tweet put out by the NCAA.

The decision is not final until the NCAA meeting ends Thursday, and it must be ratified by DI Board on Monday.

The new rules have been made to fall in line with a recent court order.

Transfer windows will remain in place and require undergraduate athletes to enter their names into the NCAA Transfer portal at certain times to be immediately eligible at a new school.

Last fall a group of attorneys put together a legal challenge to rules that forced athletes who wanted to transfer multiple-times as undergraduates to sit out a season with their new school. Previous laws allowed players to transfer once without having to sit out a year without a waiver. The lawsuit alleged the NCAA transfer rule’s waiver process violates federal antitrust law.

There is no doubt that this rule change will impact all of college athletics – including HBCUs. Just how remains to be seen.

That included five consecutive 11-plus total tackle games and 33 tackles in a two-game stretch against UT Martin and Kennessaw State. He set a single-game TSU record for tackles in a game with 19 against UT Martin (9/30) and won OVC Defensive Player of the Week honors for his performance. Beard was named 2023 All Big South-OVC First Team Defense following the season despite missing the final two games.

Monroe Beard started his college career at UAPB in 2018 where he redshirted. Beard made his impact felt as a redshirt freshman as he recorded 37 tackles, 2.0 sacks, 4.5 tackles for loss, team-high three fumble recoveries and two pass breakups. He finished with 138 career total tackles at Arkansas-Pine Bluff, including a (then) career-high with 78 tackles (eight-and-a-half tackles for loss) and five sacks during the fall of 2021.

HBCU Alabama A&M has secured a commitment from a basketball star from Taiwan – Warren Yeh.

Yeh announced his commitment to the SWAC school on April 2 after spending a post-graduation year at Bridgeton Academy in 2023-2024.

“Thank you to my family for supporting me all the way, allowing me the opportunity to step onto such a special stage. During this special year at @BridgtonHoops, I have learned a lot from @WhitLesure and am very grateful for his guidance throughout this year,” Yeh tweeted with a graphic announcing his commitment.

Warren Yeh grew up in a basketball home in Taiwan as both his parents played basketball.

“My mom is a shooter and I learned a lot from her,” Yeh told Pro Insight late last year.

Warren Yeh went on to say that environment and fit were two factors he was considering in finding a college moving forward. He admits he’s still learning English, but he’s well-versed in basketball. The 6’5 guard will now be taking his talents to an HBCU, looking to help Alabama A&M compete in the SWAC. AAMU won 11 games in the 2023-2024 season, but did win a game in the College Insider.com Tournament following the SWAC Tournament last month.

The 6’4 guard had a very good season and a solid career for UAPB, averaging 17 points and six rebounds per game. His scoring was super-efficient as he shot 50.5 percent from the field while hitting 35 percent of his 3-point attempts. Those numbers included 34 points against Missouri and 24 points against Oklahoma in the non-conference season. He scored 19 points or better 14 times this season and scored less than double-figures just six times for UAPB.

Two years after choosing Memphis football over Tennessee State and FAMU, Tevin Carter is heading to an HBCU.

The Memphis native is taking his talents to Nashville as he has committed to Tennessee State University.

Carter announced his decision to commit to TSU on Tuesday, just ahead of national signing day. He entered the transfer portal in late November.

“I do not take this decision lightly as I have so much love and respect for the team and the city of Memphis, but I am excited and ready to embrace new opportunities God has given me to step into the next chapter of my career,” Carter wrote in his statement.

    Memphis football, Tennessee State

Carter was a three-star prospect in the 2022 class according to 247Sports, which named him the 45th-best quarterback in his class and the 26th-best prospect in his class. He had offers from Power Five programs like Florida State, Auburn, Arkansas, Georgia Tech and LSU. He also was offered by Willie Simmons and FAMU as well as Tennessee State, which was transitioning from the leadership of Rod Reed to Eddie George.

Before committing to Memphis football he talked about what he was looking for in a school.

“A school that’s going to best prepare me for the league,” Carter told The State (SC). “A school that’s going to have me ready for the world after college. I’m talking about good education that’s going to put me in a good job placement after college.”

Carter redshirted in 2022. He appeared in three games in 2023, completing three of his five passes on the season. One of them was an 85 yard touchdown pass that helped Memphis defeat USF.

Less than a week after the Florida A&M Rattlers defeated the Prairie View A&M Panthers 35-14 on Ken Riley Field at Bragg Memorial Stadium for the SWAC Championship, all Florida eyes were back on the stadium looking for champions. The recently renovated stadium was awarded the Florida High School Athletic Association football state championships. Every state championship was being played on the Rattlers’ home turf.

Every coach in the country knows the importance of Florida talent and the sidelines are chock full of scouts. That includes HBCU coaches, and they made their way to check out the athletes. Representatives from FAMU, Alabama A&M and Edward Waters were all keeping a close eye on the talent thus. More schools were expected the for weekend games where the larger class schools sought their titles at Bragg Stadium. In addition, University of West Florida head coach Kaleb Nobles returned to Ken Riley Field for the first time since his University of West Florida Argonauts faced the Rattlers on Sept. 16, falling 31-10.

Fresh off his three-year extension at Edward Waters University, head coach Toriano Morgan and offensive coordinator Brian Jenkins took in the action. Morgan was pleased to see all the talent in one place.

“Oh, man, it’s a great collection of talent. This is like the buffet and the combination of high school football here,” Morgan said. “We’re just here out, evaluating some talent. We got our eyes on some guys and it’s really some other guys that are just jumping off the radar at us. So it’s just been a good experience thus far this year.”

FAMU Director of Recruiting Devin Rispress, labeled as one of 2023’s best recruiters, was all eyes as well as a contingency of FAMU coaches. While no formal contact is allowed with players as the state championship venue is considered a neutral site, it was still convenient for FAMU’s coaches to step out of their offices and take in some of the best talent in the entire state.

Among the attention grabbers on Thursday was Mainland High School defensive end LJ McCray. McCray was not hard to find. At 6’6 and 265 lbs., he towered over both teammates and opponents. Mainland won the Class 3S championship defeating the St. Augustine Yellowjackets. Smartly, St. Augustine took no chances running on McCray’s side. Virtually every play was railroaded away from the menacing presence.

McCray is a University of Florida commit, but we know how recruiting works in today’s landscape. Until a kid signs, there’s not much placed on their early commitments.

Mainland has a strong HBCU connection. Head coach Travis Roland is a former Bethune-Cookman star. There are six former Bethune-Cookman players on the coaching staff. Roland is known for wearing a B-CU t-shirt under his Mainland polo.

    ]]>
Two years ago, head coach Willie Simmons brought in a dedicated recruiting coordinator for the first time in FAMU’s history. Previously, recruiting was assigned to an assistant coach, but with today’s required attention needed to attract the country’s top talent, most schools have created a dedicated Director of Recruiting position. In walks Devin Rispress.

Rispress is from Tallahassee but coached in Simmons’ home of Gadsden County. He came directly from Gadsden County High School with a passion for interacting with prospects. His penchant for recruiting is truly second to none.

On Sept. 23 when the Rattlers hosted Alabama State University, FAMU hosted possibly its highest caliber of prospects in school history. Featured in the group were 4 and 5-star senior prospects. Among them were two in particular. One from Daytona’s Mainland High School and the other from Jacksonville’s Mandarin High School.

Rispress is fearless in recruiting against anyone in the country

Jaime Ffrench, a University of Alabama commit, ranks as a 5-star and the country’s No.5 receiver was on hand to watch the Rattlers take on the Hornets. Ffrench has been courted by several top Power Five schools including Alabama and Auburn. “I’m just here checking out the Rattlers,” Ffrench said in pregame.

Jaime Ffrench on a visit to FAMU

Zavier Mincey is a 4-star-rated defensive back out of Daytona Beach. He is a dual sport athlete who also plays basketball. At 6’3 and 190 lbs, Mincey is high on the ranking chart of Florida State and the University of Miami. “I am considering coming to FAMU. I’m from Mainland High School in Daytona Beach. There’s nothing like an HBCU,” Mincey said.

Another big-time recruit that visited FAMU was Wakulla athlete and 3-star Nememiah Chandler who is committed to Georgia Tech. Devin Rispress has been interested in Chandler for some time and feels he could help the program.

Devin Rispress sees going after top-tier talent now as a norm as opposed to an anomaly. “What I like most about my job is that I run my own department and I do it my way. Coach Simmons isn’t a micro-manager so I have the freedom to do things my way. Building relationships with these young men and their families is something that I enjoy. Probably the thing that I like the most is competing against other schools on the recruiting trail. I was a fierce competitor as a player, a coach and I brought that same energy and attitude to recruiting.”

    FAMU

Zavier Mincey on a visit to FAMU

In the big SWAC East showdown against Alabama State, for the second consecutive week, FAMU had massive official and unofficial visits. At the ASU game, Rispress entertained over 140 prospects. Under the previous model where an assistant coach added those responsibilities to his already full plate, that would not have been possible.

Simmons admires the passion of Rispress to recruit top talent

Simmons is pleased that Rispress has dedicated himself to recruiting and not coaching at FAMU. “It’s good to have a guy on your recruiting team who understands how to coach but has given up that passion to help the team by concentrating on recruiting. He has never tried to coach while at FAMU and that is rare to have someone that dedicated to what they are doing that they forfeit what you know they love,” Simmons said.

While the Rattler coaching staff is concerned with finishing this year strong, Devin Rispress is determined to reload the squad with as much talent as possible for next year. That also means ensuring that FAMU football recruiting is represented in the social media world. There is absolutely no way to attract top-tier talent from high schoolers without being active and effective in the social media realm.

The challenges of recruiting at HBCUs

It does not come without its own challenges. Recruiting against larger schools with seemingly unlimited budgets has its fallbacks. “The biggest challenge recruiting 4and 5-star athletes are the facilities. Also the advent of NIL and young men wanting to live out their dreams they have had since they were kids to play at the bigger schools. I came up with the same dreams, but the game has changed now. Kids don’t have to chase logos, here at FAMU we receive the same exposure as the Power 5 schools in many respects. We play in NFL stadiums and NFL scouts are beating down the door to see the talent here. In the past two years Markquese Bell, Xavier Smith, and Isaiah Land made NFL rosters and the scouts rave about how smart they are. Coach Simmons and staff do a great job getting our players prepared to play on Sunday if the opportunity presents itself,” said Rispress.

He hails from Tallahassee’s Rickards High School and attended college at Bethune-Cookman University. That experience at the college level gave him an understanding of the beauty of college football. His coaching aspirations have been put aside for the enjoyment of the hunt. “As much as I loved coaching running backs, I love recruiting just as much or more. The chance to return to the college level was something that I worked for and prayed for and I couldn’t pass up the opportunity when coach Simmons made the offer,” Rispress concluded.

FAMU just landed a commitment from a local receiver who initially committed to Oklahoma football.

Keyon Brown, a member of the class of 2023, announced his commitment to FAMU on Wednesday.

“I’m coming home,” Brown tweeted in his announcement on X.

The Tallahassee native was a four-star, the No. 48 wide receiver and No. 65 player in Florida in his class, with a 0.8982 prospect grade. according to the industry-generated 247Sports Composite. He had nearly 20 offers, including Alabama, Nebraska, Tennessee and Florida State, but chose Oklahoma football and enrolled in the program early. He left the program in May.

    FAMU

“When I first got there, man, it felt like I was home,” Brown said. “I knew Coach [Jeff] Lebby for like two or three days before I went to camp, but the environment, it was exciting. There was never a dull moment. Coach Lebby said they needed a receiver like me. They like big and fast receivers, and that’s what they need. So, I’m gonna [be] that for them…I’m going to be honest. Alabama’s a great school, but I feel like Oklahoma’s the best fit for me. I’m not saying I can’t play at Alabama, because I can. But I just felt like Oklahoma’s the best fit. Their offense–all they need is a go-getter, a route-runner with speed, a person who will attack the ball.”

Keyon Brown landed at Garden City Community College in Garden City, Kansas after leaving Oklahoma. He was re-offered by FAMU in August and it looks like he will be taking his talents back home in 2024.

WASHINGTON (July 18, 2023) — Howard University men’s basketball team welcomed eight new faces to The Mecca from six states and across the Pacific Ocean. “This class is the deepest and most diverse since I have been at Howard,” said Head Coach Kenneth Blakeney.

“It is a healthy mix of older transfers and true freshmen with tremendous upside. Most importantly, this class is full of ‘Howard Men’ players I believe will enhance #TheDreamFactory culture we have created here. I am excited to add these players to our roster and start coaching them in the fall.”

Here is more information on the eight newcomers:

Jordan Atkins (Somerset, N.J. / Rutgers Prep) — 6-foot-2, Guard — Freshman Atkins arrives at The Hilltop after a four-year career at Rutgers Prep (Somerset, N.J.), playing in 86 games for the Argonauts. In his final season, he guided the program to a 23-8 mark. “As a basketball player, Jordan brings a relentless competitive spirit to our program,” said Blakeney. “As a man, Jordan is even more impressive as he founded the Black Student Union at Rutgers Prep, a school that was founded in 1766, leaving his mark for generations to come. His history of activism will fit seamlessly in our program.” In his four years, he produced over 300 assists and nearly 150 steals.

Quinton Booker (Alexandria, Va. / Bishop Ireton H.S.) — 6-foot-2, Guard — Freshman Booker comes to Howard University after playing in the DMV at Bishop Ireton (Alexandria, Va.) where he led the program to an 18-14 record in one of the nation’s toughest high school conferences (Washington Catholic Athletic Conference). “Quint is a local standout that has been one of the best wing scorers and three-point shooters in the DC-area over the past few seasons,” Blakeney explained. “The opportunity to add a potent offensive weapon like him this late in the recruiting process is a major get for our program.” The combo guard guided the program to a 12-win improvement from his junior (6-15) to senior (18-14) year in high school.

Dom Campbell (Scarborough, Maine / Phillips Exeter Academy [N.H.]/Notre Dame) — 6-foot-9, Forward — Sophomore Campbell brings his talents to The District after playing 10 games for the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame. The Maine native looks to provide a low-post presence to the frontcourt. “Dom is a player that we recruited heavily out of high school,” Blakeney explained. “When he entered the transfer portal, we started the process of re-recruiting him. He was our first official visit after our season ended and first commit in this class. His inside/out versatility offensively and sheer size will make him a mismatch problem on each night.” Coming out of high school, Campbell was a four-star recruit, according to Rivals.com and 247 Sports. He played three years at The Wynflete School in Portland, Maine before enrolling at Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire.

AJ Magbegor (Australia / Diamond V.E.) — 6-foot-7, Forward — Freshman Magbegor arrives to The Mecca from Australia after playing last season with Diamond V.E. The Aussie native comes from a basketball family, being the younger brother of WNBA All-Star Ezi Magbegor from the Seattle Storm. “Someone sent me game film of AJ and I was immediately sold on his talent,” Blakeney stated. “He is the type of versatile hybrid forward that teams at every level of basketball crave. I see him becoming a Swiss Army knife on the floor for us because he can switch across all five positions on defense and has burgeoning offensive ability combined with high level athleticism. AJ’s upside is off the charts and I cannot wait to start coaching him.”

    Dylan Metoyer, Howard University

Dylan Metoyer (Chatsworth, Calif. / Sierra Canyon H.S.) — 6-foot-1, Guard — Freshman Metoyer joins the Bison Family after a successful high school career at Sierra Canyon. He will be reunited with high school teammate Shy Odom (Roxbury, Mass.), 2022-23 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year. “I have been following Dylan closely for the last two seasons at Sierra Canyon, after Shy’s commitment to our program,” Blakeney expressed. “Dylan is the consummate pass first point guard who is also a very capable three-point shooter. As Dylan continues to get stronger and fill out his body, I anticipate him becoming a very solid player for us.” During his time at Sierra Canyon, he guided the program to national recognition, ranking in the top 3 on multiple occasions.

Seth Towns (Columbus, Ohio / Northland H.S. / Harvard / Ohio State)— 6-foot-9, Forward — Graduate Student Towns arrives at Howard after playing at Ohio State during the 2021-22 campaign. Before his time with the Buckeyes, he competed at Harvard where he won the 2018 Ivy League Player of the Year. “When I found out that Seth was interested in continuing his basketball career, I made it an immediate priority to bring him to our program,” said Blakeney. “Irrespective of Seth’s immense accomplishments on the floor, he is exactly the type of person I want at Howard. He is one of the most civic-minded student-athletes in the country, having been at the forefront of the fight for racial equality in the wake of George Floyd’s murder in 2020. Seth will be a seamless fit into the culture we have here and I look forward to our staff helping him return to form on the court.” In his sophomore season at Harvard, he was named an Associated Press All-America honorable mention, the fourth-player in program history to earn the honor.

Isiah Warfield (Monaca, Pa./Central Valley H.S./Liberty) — 6-foot-5, Guard — Graduate Student Warfield comes to The Hilltop after spending the past three years at Liberty, competing in over 80 games for the Flames. “When we recruit players in the transfer program, I want to target players that come from winning programs,” Blakeney stated. “There are few better mid-major programs in the country right now than Liberty. Isiah was part of three regular season championships, one conference tournament championship and an NCAA Tournament appearance during his three seasons with the Flames. His defensive versatility, feel for the game and winning pedigree will pay immediate dividends for our program.” Last season, Liberty reached the NIT Seminal Round before falling to Big Ten foe Wisconsin.

Elijah Williams (Washington, D.C. / Sidwell Friends H.S. / Gettysburg College) — 6-foot-6, Forward — Graduate Student Williams joins Bison Nation after playing three seasons at Gettysburg College. This season, he will be playing alongside his brother, All-MEAC selection Jelani Williams (Washington). “After coaching his brother, Jelani, last season and seeing his leadership skills, when Elijah indicated his interest in joining Howard, it was a no brainer for our program,” said Blakeney. “We are thrilled to add a player with his experience and he immediately becomes one of the best athletes on our team.” At Gettysburg, he played 75 games (56 starts) for the Bullets.

Jackson State football hasn’t named a starter for its season opener in 2023, but it does have a commitment from a talented quarterback in the 2024 class.

Ethan Terrell, a quarterback Lewisville (TX) High School, committed to Jackson State on Saturday.

“The legacy continues…,” Terrell tweeted when making his commitment. Terrell tweeted when he was offered by Jackson State in May that his grandfather would have been proud.

Ethan Terrell heads into the 2023 season with a record of 23-4 as a starter. He had offers from Air Force and Jacksonville State along with Texas Southern.

Jackson State QB room already full

As for Jackson State football’s quarterback situation this year, record-setting quarterback Shedeur Sanders is long gone, as he followed his father Deion Sanders to Colorado. That leaves a big hole to fill at Jackson State. The candidates include Jason Brown, Zy McDonald, JaaCobian Morgan and Phillip Short.

New head coach T.C. Taylor said in the spring that the competition was open for 2023.

“You’ve got new coordinators, new coaches and everything in here. So I just wanted to see them first of all, break the huddle. And I thought they did an excellent job of that, getting other ten guys lined up and Jason, Zy and Philip, all three did some good stuff out there, made some big-time throws for us today,” Taylor said in March.

However things work out next season, Terrell figures to be waiting in the wings in 2024.

When freshman quarterback Josh Jones arrives in Durham later this month, there should be no doubt that he wants to be with the defending MEAC and HBCU champions.

Jones received over $3 million in combined academic and athletic scholarship offers from a wide-range of schools. But North Carolina Central is where he decided to plant his flag.

“It was kind of a difficult process to think through,” Jones told HBCU Gameday’s Symone Stanley. “But in the end, I ended up going to the school that I felt most comfortable with and that I knew was going to be able to provide for me and my future.”

Air Force, Navy and Dartmouth along with NCCU’s arch-rival HBCU North Carolina A&T were in the running for the signal-caller from Westover High School in Fayetteville, NC.

Jones said he ultimately decided the military wasn’t for him, so Air Force and Navy were out. Dartmouth was nice, but there was something missing.

So how did he choose between NCCU and A&T? Jones said it was about relationship and connection.

“It all came down to communication and the bonds that I’ve made with the coaches,” Jones said. “And that’s what put Central over A&T.”

Those relationships include offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Matt Leone and head coach Trei Oliver.

“Any advice, anything that Coach Leone, Coach Oliver, they tell that I need to work on – that’s what I’m going to do to get myself better and be able to play to that level,” Jones said.

A four-year starter in high school, Jones enters North Carolina Central with Davius Richard already entrenched as the guy on campus. He knows this and is ready to learn from him.

“Knowing that I’m going to be able to learn under a great quarterback that has put a high name for himself, and what he’s going to be able to do for the future – potentially going to the NFL,” Jones said. “Being behind that guy and learning from him, I feel that it will better me so that when my time is to come to get on the field – I’m ready.”

Alcorn State University has a long history of producing talented quarterbacks that wreak havoc on defenses in the SWAC. It looks like it may have another as it has reeled in a commitment from Chris Martin.

Martin is rated as a three-star prospect by on3.com heading into his senior season this fall. He has offers from Georgia Tech and UConn as well as Troy and Georgia Southern.

The 6’1, 185 quarterback excels both on the football field and in the classroom, as noted by Lee County High School head coach Dean Fabrizio.

“Chris Martin might be the hardest-working player we have ever had come through here at Lee County,” Fabrizio told the Albany Herald. “And that says a lot because we have had a ton of hard-working kids come through this program. In addition, he is a 4.0 student. He had a great year for us last year. He is the first sophomore starter we’ve ever had, but he has worked on himself and he has gotten so much better, bigger and stronger. He is more confident and we are expecting a huge year out of him this year.”

    Alcorn State University, Chris Martin

A member of the national honor society as well as a participant in the Elite 11 Quarterback Regional Combine, Martin told HBCU Gameday what won him over about Alcorn State University.

“The tradition, the history, my relationship with the coaches – and their track record of putting their guys in the best position to succeed,” Martin said. “I want to be a successful black man in America and they can help me grow into that. I have aspirations to play football at the highest level, however, the ball goes flat for everyone whether that be in 5 years or 40 years. I wanted to be in a place that would help me succeed in all facets of life.”

It will be at least a year before Martin hits the field in Lorman, but if he continues to mature and ASU can keep bigger schools at bay, he’ll have his shot to write his name in with the all-time greats in school history.
