The details of Michael Vick’s first head coaching contract at HBCU Norfolk State University are out.

The former no. 1 overall pick in the NFL draft has a base salary of $400k, according to a report by The Virginian-Pilot. That salary is $160k more than what his predecessor, Dawson Odums, was being paid by the school.

And that is just the starting point. Vick is eligible for performance bonuses for Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference regular-season championships ($10,000), Football Championship Subdivision playoff victories ($15,000) and coach of the year honors (ranging from $2,500 to $5,000).

The bonuses get bigger, however, if Vick can lead the HBCU program to new heights. A win in the Celebration Bowl earns him an additional $25,000. An FCS national title win would net Vick a $100,000 raise.

Michael Vick, HBCU, Norfolk State University
Michael Vick was introduced at Norfolk State in December.

It is important to note, with these bonuses, that as a MEAC member Norfolk State University is bound to the Celebration Bowl should it win the six-team MEAC. The conference does not have an automatic bid to the FCS playoffs, but Norfolk State could make it as an at-large team if its record is good enough and it doesn’t win the MEAC.

Vick is due an automatic one-year extension if his squad can get into the top half of the conference and he’s also allotted an SUV, according to the contract.

Prior to Michael Vick’s hire, Chennis Berry had the highest reported salary amongst HBCU coaches in the MEAC with a base salary of $300k. North Carolina Central head coach Trei Oliver, the MEAC’s longest tenured head coach, has a listed salary of $289,224 according to the UNC system salary database. Morgan State’s Damon Wilson had a salary of $274k in 2023 according to open payrolls. Howard University is private and head coach Larry Scott’s salary is not listed. Former Delaware State head coach Lee Hull had a salary of $220k prior to being fired and replaced by DeSean Jackson.

Sam Shade, a former Alabama football standout and national champion, has been named the new head football coach at Alabama A&M University. The announcement, made by Director of Athletics Dr. Paul Bryant on the From the Hill Podcast, positions Shade to lead the Bulldogs in their quest to return to prominence within the FCS and the HBCU football landscape.

Shade, who played a pivotal role in Alabama football’s success during his collegiate career, brings a wealth of experience as both a player and coach. A native of Birmingham, Alabama, Shade helped the Crimson Tide capture the 1992 national championship before embarking on an eight-year NFL career with the Cincinnati Bengals and Washington Redskins.

“People love people who have played and went to Alabama,” Dr. Bryant said. “He’s going to have another fanbase that is going to be able to support some of the efforts that we need to have supported at Alabama A&M.

Since transitioning from playing to coaching, Shade has built an impressive resume. He served on the staffs of Samford University, Georgia State University, and the Cleveland Browns. At Pinson Valley High School, he guided the program to a state championship, showcasing his ability to build winning teams. Most recently, Shade transformed Miles College’s football program, taking a 1-9 team in 2022 to a 10-3 record and a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) title in 2024. Under his leadership, the Golden Bears also advanced to the NCAA Division II playoffs.

Alabama A&M, Sam Shade

Shade’s ties to Alabama football and the state itself played a key role in Alabama A&M’s decision. Dr. Bryant highlighted Shade’s ability to recruit top talent throughout the region. “Sam has deep connections across Alabama and a proven track record of identifying and developing players. His background with Alabama football and his work at Miles College show he understands what it takes to build a championship program.”

In addition to his football expertise, Shade’s experience at HBCUs was a critical factor in his hiring.

For Sam Shade, taking over the Alabama A&M program represents an opportunity to make his mark in the FCS. With the Bulldogs looking to return to their winning ways, Shade’s leadership and Alabama football pedigree bring a renewed sense of optimism to the program.

“The resources, the hold in the state of Alabama is what sold us as well,” Bryant continued. “He has vast resources in the state of Alabama, where he recruits all across the state. And he has connections everywhere. And then not only in the state, but all across the country.”

Alabama A&M fans and alumni are eager to see what the future holds under the leadership of the former Alabama football star, as Shade prepares to bring his championship mentality to Huntsville.

Delaware State University’s new head football coach, DeSean Jackson, didn’t waste any time making waves in the recruiting world and snatching up another HBCU player. Officially hired on Friday, Jackson has already secured his first transfer portal commitment: running back Kobe Boykin from Jackson State, the reigning 2024 HBCU National Champions.

Both Jackson and Boykin hail from Los Angeles, creating a natural connection between the two. Boykin, a freshman, is a 5-foot-8, 165-pound standout with a decorated high school career. He played at Orange High School in California and Miami Edison in Florida, earning accolades such as Orange Coast League MVP, First Team All-State, and MaxPreps All-American honors.

HBCU, Kobe Boykin, Delaware State

Boykin announced his decision to enter the transfer portal at 12:01 PM on Sunday. He announced his decision to commit to DSU at 4:08 PM on Twitter,“ @DeSeanJackson10 #Jaccera long way from 6th ave! Let’s do it.”

DeSean Jackson, a Crenshaw district native and former NFL star, is determined to transform Delaware State’s football program. His hiring has generated excitement around DSU, and landing Boykin, from a championship culture is an early sign of progress.

Boykin’s addition strengthens Delaware State’s roster and shows Jackson’s ability to attract talent as he begins his tenure. DSU is set to welcome Boykin to campus soon, with hopes he can bring the same level of success he experienced at Jackson State.

The journey for Delaware State football under Jackson’s leadership has officially begun.

A week after former two former NFL stars were hired as HBCU coaches, Ed Reed may be next.

The Pro Football Hall of Famer is reportedly one of the finalists for the head coach opening at Alabama A&M, according to Football Scoop. The SWAC school is looking to replace Connell Maynor, who was fired after seven years at the helm late last month.

If he is named the new head coach at the HBCU, it would be a job more than two years in the making. He was chosen as Bethune-Cookman’s head football coach in late 2022 but never coached a game. His offer was eventually rescinded following several profanity-laced social media posts where he berated conditions in the aftermath of a major hurricane that caused damaged to the Daytona, FL school.

Ed Reed, HBCU
Ed Reed’s short stint at Bethune-Cookman hasn’t kept him from talking to HBCUs about football jobs.

“I was to be the coach – I was never the coach,” Reed told former Miami teammate Edgerrin James earlier this year on the “Create The Life Podcast.” “I never signed a contract. I never got fired like everybody said.”

Since then, Reed’s name has popped up in multiple HBCU football searches, but he has yet to officially be named and introduced as a head coach. Alabama A&M and Mississippi Valley are the only two remaining HBCU Division I football jobs opening after NFL stars were hired in the past week. Michael Vick was hired by Norfolk State University and DeSean Jackson was named head coach at Delaware State University.

Former NFL star Desean Jackson is officially the head coach at HBCU Delaware State University.

The school formally announced the news on Friday.

“DeSean Jackson is a perfect fit for our institution – incredibly competitive, optimistic about the prospects for our collective future, and focused on the fundamentals of the institution: STUDENTS FIRST,” said Tucker.

Jackson, a Los Angeles native from the Crenshaw district, played 15 seasons in the NFL with notable stints in Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington, all of which are areas of primary recruiting emphasis for Delaware State University. Jackson began his career as a big-play wide receiver for the Philadelphia Eagles and continues to hold the record for most 60+ and 80+ yard catches in NFL history. A three-time Pro Bowler, Jackson also played for the Los Angeles Rams, the Las Vegas Raiders, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Jackson emphasized the rich tradition of HBCU student-athletes that largely transformed professional sports in the latter half of the 20th century.

“HBCUs have much to be proud of in creating a more representative America. But that story is not simply a historical one. It continues to be written and includes the elevation of HBCU scholars and scholar athletes in every field of human endeavor,” said Jackson.

“The opportunity for me to help write another chapter here at DSU is a once-in-a-lifetime moment consistent with my journey as a young boy finding his way to manhood through mentorship, accountability, achievement, and discipline,” Jackson continued. “If we build that kind of culture at Delaware State University, we will attract the right talent and radically change the trajectory of this program. I cannot wait to get started.” Amazon Prime will release a documentary on Jackson’s life this fall.

Andy Reid, a three-time Super Bowl Champion and Head Coach of the Kansas City Chiefs, was emphatic in his support for Jackson. Reid was Jackson’s coach during their time with the Philadelphia Eagles.

“DeSean is like a son to me – a fierce competitor on the field, without rival, and a quality leader off of it,” said Reid. “I could not be more supportive of his desire to coach Division I football and would stake my career on his success at Delaware State University. We are bound at the hip and are forever family. I cannot wait to see where he takes the University and where the University takes him. This is a win-win for everyone, particularly the young men that get to learn from him and the incredible staff he will assemble – many football aficionados who have been with him since the very beginning.”

Many others have offered their support, including Super Bowl Champion Head Coach Sean McVay, who noted Jackson’s love of the game as well as his three-phase football acumen.

“I could talk about this guy all day, but the short of it is that you get a high-character leader of men, a student of the game, and an authentic passion that will inspire new supporters to Delaware State University football,” said McVay.

Three-time Super Bowl champion and Delaware State University alumnus John Taylor, who played for the San Francisco 49ers throughout his career and who was a 2019 Black Collegiate Football Hall of Fame inductee, also happens to be DeSean Jackson’s uncle.

“Having played football for many different coaches throughout my career, each one has added a unique dynamic to my game. I’m excited to see the new direction Coach Jackson will take the team – his vision and leadership are sure to bring fresh energy and opportunities for growth,” said Taylor.

The hiring of DeSean Jackson concludes an exhaustive search that emphasized the University’s renewed commitment to athletic transformation. Two years ago, the HBCU began its Athletic Transformation project focused primarily on football with a $1MM gift by former scholar-athlete Steve Ewing (c/o 1983) and $9MM in support from the State of Delaware. The centerpiece of the effort is an indoor training facility for all scholar-athletes at the University, and key upgrades to Alumni Stadium. The overall project is expected to cost $25MM – $30MM.

“We no longer dream big dreams. We are in execution mode, which means having the right vision, the right talent, and a set of inspirational leaders who can see the road ahead for a university whose time has come. DeSean will be one of those leaders throughout our institution,” said University President Tony Allen.

Delaware State University has ranked in the top 5 public HBCUs and top 10 HBCUs overall since Dr. Allen began his tenure in January 2020. The University is also now the #1 choice for students of color in Delaware and home to the state-sponsored Inspire Scholarship, a fully funded, tuition-free scholarship for any Delaware-graduating high school senior with a 2.75 GPA and a commitment to public service at the University. More than 70 percent of incoming, in-state, first-year students are Inspire Scholars.

Delaware State University will hold its first press conference with Coach Jackson on campus at the University’s Athletic Hall of Fame in the MLK Student Center on Wednesday, January 8, 2025.

RALEIGH, NC – A familiar HBCU football coaching face will once again lead the Shaw University football program as Greg Ruffin has been tabbed to lead the Bears program for a second stint the university announced Tuesday morning.

“We are thrilled to welcome Coach Ruffin back to Shaw University,” said George Knox, Shaw University’s Athletic Director. “His energy, experience, and vision for the future of our football program align perfectly with our mission. Coach Ruffin’s commitment to developing student-athletes and building a championship culture makes him the ideal leader for the Bears.”

Ruffin is no stranger to Shaw University, having served as head coach in 2002 when he re-established the football program, leading the team to an impressive 7-3 record in its inaugural season. With over 30 years of coaching experience at various collegiate levels, including his most recent role as running backs coach/recruitment coordinator at SWAC member Alabama State, Ruffin has demonstrated a unique ability to motivate players and elevate programs to new heights.

HBCU Shaw University

“I am honored to return to Shaw University and lead the Bears football program,” said Ruffin. “This is a special place with a rich history, and I look forward to building upon its legacy. Together, we will strive for excellence on the field, in the classroom, and within the community.”

The university will hold a press conference on January 7 at 11 AM to formally introduce Coach Ruffin. Members of the community, alumni, and media are invited to attend.

About Gregg Ruffin

Greg Ruffin joined the Alabama State coaching staff in 2022 as the running backs coach and recruiting coordinator. He was officially hired as the 14th head football coach in the stories HBCU football history of the Edward Waters College football program in 2017 (December 14). His 20+ years of experience in turning programs around as a head coach at the Division II and NAIA levels and a position coach at the FCS level made him the perfect selection for EWC. Ruffin spent one season at Bethune-Cookman University, as the tight ends coach before taking over Edward Waters. His most recent head coaching job was at fellow NAIA HBCU Texas College in 2016. However, prior to his stint at Texas College, Ruffin was head coach for Paine College in the school’s resurgence of football in 2013, after the program was dormant for more than 50 years.

GREENSBORO – North Carolina A&T has a new head football coach and a new schedule. A&T’s 2025 schedule has been released, and newly minted head coach Shawn Gibbs will make his Division I-FCS head coaching debut on Saturday, August 30, 2025, in Nashville, Tenn., against historic HBCU football rival Tennessee State.

Here is a breakdown of the remaining 2025 football schedule. No game times have been announced except for 1 p.m., Saturday, October 11, versus HBCU foe South Carolina State University (SCSU) in the Greatest Homecoming On Earth.

North Carolina A&T at Tennessee State
Date: August 30, 2025
Series: Tennessee State leads, 19-6-1

Breakdown: These two HBCU squads who play in non-HBCU conferences will meet for the first time since the Tennessee State Tigers defeated A&T 37-7 in the Circle City Classic in Indianapolis, Ind. The last time the two teams played in Nashville was November 27, 1999, when the Aggies defeated the Tigers 24-10 in the first round of the NCAA Division I-FCS playoffs.

The Tigers were the No. 1 team in the nation at the time, and the game still stands as A&T’s only playoff win.

North Carolina A&T at UCF
Date: September 6, 2025
Series: First meeting

Breakdown: A&T’s game against the University of Central Florida Knights will stand as the Aggies lone game against a Division I-FBS opponent. The Aggies had some success with FBS programs when he served as the Aggies running backs/special teams coordinator from 2011-21. During that span, the Aggies beat Kent State, Charlotte, and East Carolina.

Hampton at North Carolina A&T
Date: September 13, 2025
Series: Hampton leads, 29-18-2

Breakdown: The Aggies have struggled against the Hampton Pirates since leaving the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC). The Aggies are 0-3 against the Pirates since both HBCU institutions left the MEAC, including one loss in a Big South Conference game and two in Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) contests. Hampton defeated the Aggies 59-17 during the 2024 homecoming game, the most points ever scored in the series.

This season’s game will stand as A&T’s home and conference opener between the CAA’s only HBCU members.

N.C. Central University (NCCU) at North Carolina A&T
Date: September 20, 2025
Series: A&T leads, 54-37-5

Breakdown: Two head coaches might not know each other better than Shawn Gibbs and NCCU head coach Trei Oliver. The two were teammates at NCCU in the mid-90s. They were on the same staff at Grambling State from 2007-10 and the same staff at A&T from 2011-15. They will face one another for the first time as head coaches when the historic HBCU rivalry occurs at Truist Stadium on the east side of Greensboro. In the forefront leading to the game that week will undoubtedly be NCCU’s 66-24 win over A&T in 2024.

North Carolina A&T at Maine
Date: September 27, 2025
Series: First Meeting

Breakdown: These two schools have absolutely zero history together. It will, without doubt, be the Aggies’ farthest trip north in the more than 100 years of the program’s history. After playing the Black Bears on the 27th, there will still be three teams the Aggies have yet to play in the CAA – Stony Brook, UAlbany, and New Hampshire. They have played Monmouth and Bryant, but not as CAA opponents. They played both of those opponents in Big South Conference games. They will take Stony Brook off that list later in the season.

HBCU North Carolina A&T

North Carolina A&T at William & Mary
Date: October 4, 2025
Series: William & Mary leads, 1-0

Breakdown: The Tidewater area is way more familiar to the Aggies than Maine, without question. Even though A&T has spent plenty of time in the area playing the likes of Norfolk State and Hampton, they have never traveled to Williamsburg, Va., to play at William & Mary’s Zable Stadium. In the first-ever meeting between the two teams during the 2024 season, William & Mary ran for 213 yards in a 45-7 win at Truist Stadium.

S.C. State University (SCSU at North Carolina A&T
Date: October 11, 2025
Series: SCSU leads, 32-24-2

Breakdown: The SCSU Bulldogs emphatically ended a seven-game losing streak to the Aggies with a 45-25 win at Oliver C. Dawson Stadium last season. In 2025, the Bulldogs will visit the Greatest Homecoming On Earth. Two former A&T football assistants will match wits when reigning MEAC coach of the year Chennis Berry faces first-year Aggies head coach Shawn Gibbs. Berry served as an assistant in Aggieland from 2003-05 and 2009-10. The Bulldogs will come in as the defending MEAC champions. The Aggies will try to end a three-game homecoming game losing streak.

Campbell at North Carolina A&T
Date: October 25, 2025
Series: Campbell leads, 2-1

Breakdown: The schedule gods gave the Aggies a week away from competition after homecoming. Plus, it will allow fans and alums to regroup before playing consecutive home games. The Fighting Camels will make their third trip to Truist Stadium in four years. The last time Shawn Gibbs saw the Camels was part of an epic comeback during homecoming in which the Aggies overcame an 18-point first-half deficit to win 45-38. Campbell has won the last two meetings over the Aggies, including last season’s 21-7 win at Barker-Lane Stadium in Buies Creek, N.C. Gibbs will be the third different A&T head coach to have faced the Camels in the series.

Towson at North Carolina A&T
Date: November 1, 2025
Series: Towson leads, 2-0

Breakdown: A&T has not succeeded much against the Tigers since joining the CAA. In their two meetings, the Tigers have scored 73 points and compiled 949 yards of offense. The last time Towson came to A&T, they defeated the Aggies 42-32 during the 2022 Homecoming Game. The Aggies have never led against the Tigers in their two previous meetings. Like against other CAA teams, the Aggies will look for a better result against Towson this season.

North Carolina A&T at Stony Brook
Date: November 8, 2025
Series: First meeting

Breakdown: A&T will get their first shot at the Stony Brook Seawolves, leaving the Aggies with only two CAA opponents they have yet to face – New Hampshire and UAlbany. The Seawolves made one of the best turnarounds in Division I-FCS last season, going 8-4 and falling just short of making the NCAA playoffs. Stony Brook went a combined 2-19 in 2022 and 2023, including 0-10 in 2023 before its dramatic turnaround. That should give hope to the Aggie fans looking for a positive step in the right direction during the 2025 season.

Monmouth at North Carolina A&T
Date: November 15, 2025
Series: Monmouth leads, 1-0

Breakdown: Monmouth returns to the schedule and Truist Stadium in 2024. The last time the Aggies faced the Hawks was during the 2021 A&T Homecoming Game, and it counted as a Big South Conference game as Monmouth drove away from the east side of Greensboro with a 35-16 win. In 2025, the two schools will face each other as CAA schools for the first time. Monmouth went 6-6 last season but ended the season on a two-game winning streak against two nationally-ranked teams – Villanova and Stony Brook.

North Carolina A&T at Elon
Date: November 22, 2025
Series: A&T leads, 8-6

Breakdown: The Aggies will end the regular season against Elon for the second straight season. The Aggies are 0-2 against the Phoenix since joining their Piedmont brethren in the CAA. Elon is another team that ended the 2024 season on an impressive winning streak. The Phoenix won its final four games a year ago, including a 31-13 win at Truist Stadium against A&T in each team’s season finale. The series could get fun and become a rivalry if both Piedmont teams are playing for something like a playoff berth or a championship at the season’s end.

Former Philadelphia Eagles star DeSean Jackson appears to be the next former NFL star to take over at an HBCU.

Jackson is expected to be named the next head coach at Delaware State according to multiple reports. The news was first reported by Jeff Lightsy, Jr. on Thursday afternoon.

Delaware State is an FCS HBCU that plays in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC). The school recently fired head coach Lee Hull after two seasons and a 2-21 record. DSU has not had a winning season since 2012 and hasn’t won a MEAC title since 2007.

Desean Jackson, NFL, HBCU, Philadelphia Eagles

DeSean Jackson had a long, successful NFL career, primarily with the Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Redskins. From 2008 through 2022 he caught 641 passes for 11,263 yards and 58 touchdowns, earning three Pro Bowl nods. He had two 1,000 yard plus seasons with the Washington franchise before his numbers began to decline as he hopped to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, back to the Eagles and had stints with the Raiders and Baltimore Ravens before his career ended in 2002.

Jackson’s hire comes less than a week after Michael Vick, another former Philadelphia Eagles star, was officially named head coach at Norfolk State University, another HBCU in the MEAC. They are the latest former NFL stars to be hired as HBCU head football coaches with little to no head coaching experience. Deion Sanders kicked it off in 2020 when he was named head coach at Jackson State. Eddie George was hired at Tennnessee State a few months after that and Eddie Robinson Jr. was hired at his alma mater — Alabama State — despite having never coached prior to accepting that job in Dec. 2021.

]]>
NORFOLK, VA — Michael Vick held his inaugural press conference at Norfolk State University on Monday after being introduced as head coach of the FCS HBCU college football program. He offered a compelling glimpse into his vision for the program. From tackling recruitment challenges to setting ambitious goals, here are five key takeaways:

Recruitment and Player Development Are the Cornerstones

Recruitment is central to Vick’s vision for success at Norfolk State. With a focus on tapping into the talent-rich 757 area, he explained, “We know the type of talent we produce. You’ve got to take the talent and bring it out of them.” Vick’s approach to coaching emphasizes simplicity and clarity: “Sometimes less is more… We’ll make sure our kids are prepared and ready to go.”

By prioritizing player development and tailoring strategies to maximize their potential, Vick aims to build a program capable of sustained success.

Pressure Is a Positive Force

Vick embraces the pressure that comes with leading a college football program, viewing it as a motivator rather than a burden. “If there’s no pressure, then what are we doing it for?” he said. Reflecting on his personal drive, he added, “I put pressure on myself to be better than I was the day before.”

This mentality sets the tone for both his players and the program as a whole, encouraging a culture of excellence and self-improvement.

The Celebration Bowl Is the Goal

Vick made it clear that reaching the Celebration Bowl, the matchup between HBCU conference champions of the MEAC and SWAC, is a primary target for the program. He expressed excitement about pursuing milestones Norfolk State has yet to achieve: “Norfolk State has never made it to the Celebration Bowl… Now we’ve got some goals and got some things we set out for and some things to aspire to do.”

By aiming for this prestigious game, Vick sets an ambitious benchmark that reflects his commitment to elevating the Spartans to national prominence.

College Sports Is About Money—But It’s Not Everything

Vick candidly addressed the financial realities of modern college football.

“As of right now is about money. I mean, let’s just be candid,” Vick said straight-forwardly. “But it is what it is, you know, that it’s great for the student athletes, it’s great for the young men and women who have the opportunity to do great things. And so I got to look at this, situation as some of these kids might develop into, the players that they want to develop into and still have some eligibilty and make it go on to a big school and get what they deserve.

This practical approach underscores Vick’s commitment to success through strategic development, even in a financially driven environment.

Building a Legacy and Inspiring the Community

For Vick, coaching at Norfolk State is about more than football—it’s about creating a lasting legacy that uplifts the university and its community. “This is really not about me. This is about the legacy that I can leave,” he said. Rallying the fan base, he declared, “Turn up and show out. It’s a new day. We’re not cutting any corners.”

Through a focus on uniting the community and elevating Norfolk State’s football program, Vick aims to make a lasting impact both on and off the field.

### Conclusion

Michael Vick’s first press conference as Norfolk State’s head coach revealed his passion, ambition, and strategic mindset. With goals like reaching the Celebration Bowl and a commitment to development over finances, Vick sets a high bar for the program’s future.

“We’re turning the corner. It’s going to be a great ride.”

Michael Vick made his first appearance on Fox NFL Kickoff on FS1 since accepting the head coaching job at Norfolk State.

Vick, a member of the Fox NFL Kickoff show since 2017, was overtaken with emotion as co-hosts Charissa Thompson, Charles Woodson and Julian Edelman showered him with love and donned Norfolk State gear in solidarity.

“This wasn’t easy. Bittersweet,” Michael Vick said of having to leave the show to take over as head coach at Norfolk State. “But when you get an opportunity to go lead young men in your community where I grew up — watching his team. I wanted them to be assured that they wanted me to be the head coach with no experience. But I got what it takes. I got all the right people around me. And I’m ready to embark on a new journey.”

A grateful Vick thanked the network as well as his colleagues.

“So I know y’all will be there right with me, but this will forever be home,” Vick said. “And I’ll never forget that.”

Former Heisman Trophy winner and Pro Football Hall of Fame Charles Woodson spoke glowingly of his colleague while wearing a Norfolk State hat.

“You see the emotion. That’s what it means to him and he’s going to pour all of that into you. Anybody that’s out there undecided about what you’r going to do — I’ve been around this man for a few years now. You’re going to get the best knowledge you can get.”

Michael Vick will be announced as Norfolk State’s head football coach on Monday at 10 AM EST.

Prairie View, Texas – Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU) has named former HBCU football player Tremaine Jackson as the new head football coach for the Panthers, effective January 1, 2025. With a legacy of excellence and a commitment to student-athlete success, Coach Jackson brings a wealth of experience and an unrivaled passion for the sport to the university. Joining Prairie View A&M fresh off being named AFCA Division II National Coach of the Year, Jackson served as head coach of the Valdosta State University Blazers’ football team from 2022-24, amassing an overall record of 30-9 in his three seasons.

He guided the Blazers to an undefeated regular season in 2024 en route to the NCAA Division II National Championship game.

In his second year with Valdosta State, Jackson led them to the Gulf South Conference championship, becoming the first Black coach in conference history to win the title, with the team ranked in the top 15 nationally in passing offense, first downs, completion percentage, passing efficiency, net punting, and fumbles recovered. Additionally, the team achieved the highest grade point average in program history.

Before taking over Valdosta’s program, Jackson was head coach for the Colorado Mesa Mavericks; defensive line coach at Texas State, and a defensive coordinator at Abilene Christian. He also spent time as assistant head coach at the University of Sioux Falls, helping lead the Cougars to a combined 32-5 record in four seasons.

Jackson began his coaching career at Texas A&M University-Kingsville, as the Javelinas’ defensive line coach. He served as defensive coordinator at Houston, TX HBCU Texas Southern University from 2008-2011 helping that team win the 2010 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) title. Jackson also had stops at Trinity Valley Community College and Evangel University.

PVAMU athletic director, Anton Goff expressed his enthusiasm for the arrival of Coach Jackson, stating, “Coach Tremaine Jackson is a natural fit for Prairie View and for what we want to see our program become. His experience, leadership, and dedication to student-athlete success align perfectly with our university’s values and goals. We expect excellence and we’re very confident that Coach Jackson will deliver. We’re looking forward to the positive impact he will have on our football program and the entire Prairie View community.”

Named by ESPN as one of 45 minority coaches under 45 to watch and to FootballScoop’s 2022 Minority Watch List, Jackson was twice selected to participate in the NFL’s Bill Walsh Minority Fellowship, spending a week in June of 2023 with the Pittsburgh Steelers and part of training camp in 2024 with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He also completed NFL internships with the Houston Texans and San Diego Chargers.

Jackson is vice president of the Minority Coaches Advancement Association, has served on several AFCA committees, and was recipient of the 2022 Harry Butler Community Service Award for dedicated community service and outstanding volunteerism. He has been recognized throughout his coaching career for his ability to build winning teams, while cultivating a culture of excellence both on and off the field.

Coach Jackson, shared his excitement in joining PVAMU, saying, “I am grateful for the opportunity to serve as the next head coach at Prairie View. In our program, we strive to build champions, both on and off the field, and that’s something I truly believe can be accomplished…I’m excited to come home and have our team be an active part of the community.”

Jackson added, “I want to thank President Tomikia P. LeGrande and Director of Athletics Anton Goff for their belief in me to lead the Panthers. Aligning athletics with the campus culture of excellence is something that is extremely important to me, and I feel confident that can be accomplished with their leadership and vision. I am eager to get to work.”

A former HBCU student-athlete, Tremaine Jackson played on the defensive line at Texas Southern for two years after transferring from the University of Louisiana-Monroe. He is a 2006 graduate of the University of Houston, where he obtained a bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies. The Houston, Texas native has one daughter, Harmony.

Prairie View A&M was supported in its HBCU football coaching search by Collegiate Sports Associates, a leading national executive search firm.

Four years after Deion Sanders took over an HBCU program at Jackson State, Michael Vick is preparing to do the same thing at Norfolk State.

The newly named head coach at the FCS HBCU says he recently had a conversation with the former Jackson State head coach and current Colorado head coach.

Deion Sanders, Jackson State
Deion Sanders during his Jackson State days.

“I reached out to Deion just to have a conversation with him,” Vick said in a recent interview with FoxSports. “The conversation was more so about philosophy and the most important steps to get started. He reminded me I’d have a bunch of people pulling for me.”

Deion Sanders, of course, led Jackson State to back-to-back SWAC titles and won the Eddie Robinson Award for the best coach in the FCS. He left following the 2022 season to take the Colorado job. Jackson State recently won the HBCU national title by defeating South Carolina State in the Celebration Bowl.

Michael Vick,

Michael Vick also talked about why he picked Norfolk State over Sacramento State as both programs were interested in him taking over.

“Sacramento State had a great situation. They had tons of NIL money and tons of opportunity,” Vick said. “But I didn’t want to make my decision based on money. I wanted to make it based on what I could do and who I could sincerely help. And I think, you know, I can help on both sides. But I felt like it was great to go back home and do it in my backyard. And that was probably the deciding factor, having the chance to do it back where I grew up.”

Michael Vick will have his work cut out for him at Norfolk State. The program has had just one winning season in the last decade, a 6-5 finish under his predecessor, Dawson Odums.

Vick is scheduled to be introduced as Norfolk State’s head coach on Monday at 10:00 AM EST.

Former NFL quarterback Teddy Bridgewater has turned himself into a championship-winning high school coach — and HBCUs are taking notice.

Bridgewater says he’s been contacted by multiple HBCUs recently.

“A new HBCU reached out to interview me today, and a couple of NFL teams have also offered coaching jobs. This is a cool process, no lie,” Bridgewater posted via Twitter/X.

The former Lousiville star led his high school, Miami Northwestern, to a state 3-A championship earlier this month in his first season as a head coach. His team outscored playoff opponents 262-12 and won the championship game 41-0.

Despite the interest from HBCUs, Teddy Bridgewater has made it clear that his goal is to return to the NFL.

Teddy Bridgewater, HBCUs

“That’s the plan. My team knows that’s the plan. We wanted to win a state championship and then coach goes back to the league, see what happens, and then come back February in the offseason, continue coaching high school football. We’ll see how it plays out.”

The 32-year-old clearly wants to try his hand at the NFL again — for good reason. In nine NFL seasons — he missed all of 2016 due to injury — he has thrown for more touchdowns (87) than interceptions (75) and has a 33-32 record as a starter. And there will likely be several NFL teams interested in his services.

But it also makes sense that he would be on the radar as a potential HBCU coach, especially given the success of Deion Sanders and Eddie George, along with the hire of Michael Vick at Norfolk State. HBCUs have shown a willingness to take a chance on an unconventional candidate, and Bridgewater has shown the ability to lead a team to a championship, albeit at the high school level.

There are currently four HBCUs without a head coach named at the FCS level — Alabama A&M, Prairie View A&M, Mississippi Valley State and Delaware State.

Just a few years ago, it was unheard of for players from Florida State University (FSU) to “cross the tracks” and come to play football at Florida A&M University (FAMU). However, with the advent of the transfer portal, it has gone from taboo to normal.

The most high-profile player to transfer from FSU to FAMU was offensive lineman Jalen Goss. Goss was an All-SWAC selection at tackle and played a leadership role on the Rattlers once he settled in.

The newest name to the “Tallahassee Transfer Portal” is defensive lineman Xavier Perkins. Perkins played sparingly for Florida State in 2024 but remains a highly respected talent after his stellar high school career. The Tampa, FL native is a graduate of Berkeley Prep, where he was an All-American. He was invited to the 2023 Blue-Grey All-American Bowl and Georgia vs. Florida High School Showcase. At Berkeley, Perkins recorded 63 tackles, including 21 for loss with 13 sacks, three fumble recoveries, one forced fumble, and nine quarterback hurries while playing 30 varsity games at Berkeley Prep.

FAMU Florida State transfer portal

Head coach James Colzie III, a Florida State graduate, is rebuilding his defense, which was lacking in the ability to stop the run last season. Prior to last season, the Rattlers’ “Dark Cloud” defense was ranked No.2 nationally. After the departure of defensive coordinator Ryan Smith, who was the mastermind of the defense, the defense is being rebuilt by new defensive coordinator Milton Patterson. A big part in the success of the defense will be putting the talent on the field and Perkins could play a pivotal role in that effort.

Standing at 6-4, 237 lbs, Perkins, known as a fierce edge rusher, could be the missing piece for the Rattlers getting a significant pass rush. Not since the departure of Indianapolis Colts edge rusher Isaiah Land have the Rattlers possessed that threat. Marshall Transfer Davion Westmoreland began to show signs of being that guy at the end of last season. Adding two threats to harass quarterbacks is a key component of the Rattlers bouncing back from their 7-5 season.

NORFOLK, Va. – Norfolk State University, the largest Historically Black College and University (HBCU) in Virginia, has made a historic hire, naming Michael Vick as the 19th head football coach of its program. This milestone decision brings one of the most electrifying athletes in sports history back to Hampton Roads, where his legendary football journey began.

Following unanimous approval by the Board of Visitors, NSU Director of Athletics Dr. Melody Webb announced that Michael Vick, a four-time Pro Bowl selection and former No. 1 overall NFL draft pick, will lead Norfolk State’s football program into a new era.

“Today marks a historic day for Norfolk State University,” Webb said. “I am thrilled to welcome Michael Vick and his family back to the Hampton Roads area to lead our football program. One of the greatest athletes the region has ever seen, Coach Vick’s leadership, knowledge, and dedication will pour into the fundamental layers of the foundation we hope to build for Norfolk State football.”

Michael Vick’s appointment underscores Norfolk State’s commitment to elevating its football program and enhancing its stature within the HBCU community. Dr. Webb highlighted how Vick’s story of triumph and his stature in the sport align with Norfolk State’s mission of empowering student-athletes.

“Coach Vick is not just one of the most dynamic athletes ever produced in Virginia; he is a beacon of inspiration for our student-athletes,” Webb said. “We believe his prominence and credibility will open doors for Norfolk State in recruiting, building a brand that stands tall in the competitive landscape of HBCU athletics.”

Michael Vick, Norfolk State

A Newport News native, Michael Vick’s illustrious 13-year NFL career featured standout seasons with the Atlanta Falcons and the Philadelphia Eagles, as well as stints with the New York Jets and Pittsburgh Steelers. His leadership, honed at every level of his career, is now poised to inspire the next generation of student-athletes at Norfolk State, an HBCU proud of its rich heritage and athletic achievements.

“Coach Vick joining the Norfolk State family is another example of this truly being our time,” Norfolk State president Dr. Javaune Adams-Gaston said. “We are excited that he is bringing his experience and talents to help develop the next generation of student-athletes right here in Hampton Roads. This is an exciting time for the University and this community, and we look forward to a bright future.”

In accepting the role, Michael Vick expressed his gratitude and vision for the future of Norfolk State’s football program.

“I am blessed and humbled by this opportunity to lead, mentor, and transform the football program at Norfolk State University,” Vick said. “A prestigious HBCU with a rich athletics history, NSU provides a tremendous environment for students to reach their full potential on the field and just as importantly, in the classroom. I am honored to join the Norfolk State family and welcome your support as we embark on this journey together. BEHOLD THE GREEN AND GOLD.”

Michael Vick will be formally introduced at a press conference on Monday at 10 a.m. EST, which will be live-streamed via YouTube, Facebook, X, and Instagram. Media members must apply for credentials by 12 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 22.

Norfolk State University, an HBCU that has long been a cornerstone of excellence in Virginia, is ready to usher in a new era under the leadership of Michael Vick, a name synonymous with greatness, innovation, and inspiration. BEHOLD THE GREEN AND GOLD!

FORT VALLEY, Ga. — Division II HBCU Fort Valley State University (FVSU) has announced Kenny Ray as the interim head coach of Wildcat football. He previously held the position prior to the hiring of former head coach Shawn Gibbs, who left his post at Fort Valley State University on December, 6th 2024 to become the head coach at North Carolina A&T.

Ray, who has been with FVSU since February 2020, most recently served as the associate head coach, offensive line coach, and run game coordinator. During his tenure, Ray’s offensive line played a pivotal role in the team’s success, paving the way for the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference’s (SIAC) top rushers, including current Green Bay Packer Emanuel Wilson and standout Brandon Marshall. Under Ray’s leadership, the 2024 offensive line allowed the fewest sacks in the SIAC.

Ray’s extensive coaching career spans over two decades, including 15 seasons at Division I HBCU programs such as Tennessee State, Howard, Alabama State, and North Carolina A&T. He also has experience at the FBS level, having coached at the University of Louisiana-Monroe from 1999 to 2003. Before joining FVSU, he spent seven seasons as the offensive line coach and assistant head coach at Gardner-Webb University.

A national search is currently underway to identify the next head coach for Wildcat football.

HBCU Fort Valley State University Kenny Ray

About Kenny Ray

Kenneth Ray started his first season with Fort Valley State as the Assistant Head Coach/Offensive Line/Run Game Coordinator in February 2020. He comes to FVSU after spending the past seven seasons as the Offensive Line/Assistant Head Coach at Gardner-Webb University.

Coach Ray spent time as Offensive Coordinator at North Carolina A&T and his line cleared a path for running back Michael Ferguson to finish his career with 2,524 yards and 27 touchdowns – including a 1,000-yard season in 2007. Ferguson finished his career as the sixth-leading rusher in school history.

As a player, Coach Ray was a three-year starter from 1992-1994 at the University of Southern Mississippi, where he helped the Golden Eagles to a pair of winning seasons. USM defeated LSU, 20-18, on the road in his final college game in 1994. During his time at USM, Coach Ray was a teammate of future NFL Hall of Famer Brett Favre.

The City of Jackson will host a parade honoring the Jackson State University Tigers football team for their awe-inspiring HBCU national championship victory in Atlanta, where they defeated South Carolina State 28-7 to win their first Celebration Bowl. The parade, organized in partnership with Jackson State University, kicks off tentatively at 3 p.m. on Friday, January 17, 2025.

The event will feature appearances by Head Coach T.C. Taylor and the national championship-winning Tigers. Taylor is a former JSU quarterback and receiver who set records during his matriculation at the HBCU. The Pike County native wins the Celebration Bowl in his second year, solidifying himself as the first Jackson State coach to snag the history-making title in Atlanta.

“This national championship is for the City of Jackson and won by a Mississippi-grown Jackson State alum. I can’t think of a better way to honor the accomplishments of this team than with a parade in our city. I want to thank the City of Jackson for spearheading this campaign to honor our football program, and I can’t wait until January 17,” said Vice President and Director of Athletics Ashley Robinson.

The Tigers’ Celebration Bowl victory reflects the heart, hustle, and unmatched excellence of JSU. A parade is a means for every fan who cheered from the stands, streamed the games, or repped the blue and white with pride.

Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba said the parade is his response to multiple requests from supporters wanting a tribute to the monumental accomplishment of the JSU Tigers Football Team, who made history by snagging the Celebration Bowl win after their third trip to Atlanta.

“Jackson State’s victory is a win for our entire city. This parade is our way of showing gratitude to the players, coaches, and everyone who contributed to this unforgettable season. We invite everyone to join us in celebrating this historic achievement,” said Lumumba.

Jackson State University etched its name in HBCU football history with a commanding 21-point victory over South Carolina State in the 2024 Celebration Bowl. This triumph not only secured Jackson State’s first Celebration Bowl title but also tied the largest margin of victory in the game’s history. The 21-7 win was a moment of redemption for the Tigers, who lost to the Bulldogs in the 2021 matchup by the same margin.

The SWAC champions, led by quarterback Jacobian Morgan, showcased their offensive and defensive prowess. While the first quarter remained scoreless, Jackson State struck in the second quarter, scoring 14 points to take control of the game. Morgan was efficient under center, throwing for 219 yards and one touchdown, with wide receiver Joanes Fortilien hauling in a 4-yard scoring pass to open the Tigers’ account.

Dominance from Start to Finish

On the ground, running back Irv Mulligan delivered a standout performance with 71 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Jackson State outgained South Carolina State 367 yards to 135, including a staggering 148-16 advantage in rushing yards. The Tigers’ dominance in the trenches set the tone for the game.

A Relentless Defense

Jackson State’s defense was the backbone of their success, holding the MEAC champion Bulldogs to a mere 16 rushing yards on 18 attempts. Defensive standout A. Petty recorded a pivotal interception, while A. Taylor added a crucial sack as the Tigers repeatedly stifled South Carolina State’s offense. The Bulldogs, led by quarterback Eric Phoenix, struggled to find consistency, converting just one of 10 third-down attempts.

The defense also forced five three-and-outs and consistently pressured the Bulldogs’ offensive line, showcasing why Jackson State has become a force in HBCU football.

A Balanced Legacy

Jackson State’s Celebration Bowl victory is a defining moment for HBCU football, highlighting the program’s growth and determination. The Tigers’ ability to avenge their 2021 loss to South Carolina State demonstrates their evolution into a powerhouse program.

However, the game also underscores the competitive spirit of HBCU football, with South Carolina State continuing to represent the MEAC with pride. While the Tigers celebrate this historic win, both programs have elevated the profile of HBCU athletics, proving that the Celebration Bowl remains a premier showcase for Black college football on the national stage.

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – South Carolina State quarterback Eric Phoenix and Morgan State defensive lineman Elijah Williams have been named the 2024 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year. The announcement was made during the 66th Annual National Football Foundation (NFF) Hall of Fame Press Conference, broadcast live on ESPN+ from Las Vegas, Nevada.

“Congratulations to Eric and Elijah on being named the MEAC Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year,” said MEAC Commissioner Sonja Stills. “These exceptional student-athletes have demonstrated excellence on the field and are outstanding representatives of South Carolina State University, Morgan State University, and the MEAC. It is an honor to recognize their achievements and celebrate their well-deserved accolades.”

MEAC Eric Phoenix Elijah Williams

Phoenix (QB, Gr., 6-3, 210, Savannah, Ga.) delivered an outstanding performance during the 2024 season, leading the MEAC with 2,460 passing yards and 20 touchdowns. Over 10 games, he completed 170 of 261 pass attempts, achieving an impressive 65.1% completion rate. His efforts earned him three MEAC Offensive Player of the Week honors.

Nationally, Eric Phoenix stands among the elite in several key statistical categories. He ranks seventh in passing efficiency (164.2) and passing yards per completion (14.47), and 11th in total offense (2,685 yards). Additionally, he is 15th in passing yards per game (246.0) and 26th in total passing yards (2,460) and 25th in touchdown passes (20).

Phoenix’s leadership was pivotal in guiding the Bulldogs to the 2024 MEAC Championship and a No. 18 ranking in the final AFCA Coaches Poll of the regular season. His remarkable achievements extended beyond the conference, as he was named the inaugural HBCU+ National Player of the Year by Stats Perform and was a finalist for the prestigious Walter Payton Award, which honors the top offensive player at the Division I FCS level.

Williams (DL, Sr., 6-3, 270, Jersey City, N.J.) was named the 2024 MEAC Defensive Player of the Year after leading Morgan State to its best season in a decade. The Bears finished 3-2 in MEAC play and 6-6 overall. Williams became Morgan State’s all-time leader in career sacks with 31.0 and ranked eighth nationally this season with 11.0 sacks. He also recorded 15.0 tackles for loss, placing him second in the MEAC and 20th nationally.

This season, Elijah Williams delivered an impressive stat line with 11.0 sacks, 32 total tackles (22 solo), 15.0 tackles for loss, three interceptions, one pass breakup, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery. He recorded a season-high eight tackles against Towson and tallied seven tackles in games against Stony Brook and Norfolk State. Williams also registered two sacks in three different games (Towson, Virginia-Lynchburg, and North Carolina Central).

A First Team All-MEAC honoree, Williams was also named a finalist for the 2024 Buck Buchanan Award, presented annually by Stats Perform to the top defensive player in Division I FCS football. Over his career at Morgan State, Williams has amassed 218 total tackles, including 128 solo stops. His career-high performance came in 2023 when he recorded 12 tackles in a double-overtime game against the University of Albany.

Less than one year after leaving an HBCU championship squad at FAMU to join Duke University as an assistant coach, Willie Simmons is now the coach at an FBS program.

Simmons joined a small group of former HBCU coaches to become head coach at an FBS program. He is just the fifth man to do so — but the second this week.

Jerry Mack
Former NC Central head coach Jerry Mack is now the head coach at Kennessaw State.

Simmons’ hiring comes less than a week after former North Carolina Central head coach Jerry Mack was hired as head coach at Kennessaw State.

Those moves came fairly close together compared to the previous three former HBCU coaches that got FBS jobs.

Willie Jeffries had a red-hot career at South Carolina State in the 1970s before being hired as head coach at Wichita State.

Jay Hopson coached four seasons at Alcorn State, leading it to back-to-back SWAC championships in 2014 and 2015. After making history as the first white coach in SWAC history he was then hired as head coach at Southern Mississippi.

Deion Sanders, Willie Simmons, HBCU Gameday, FBS
Deion Sanders chats with Willie Simmons at SWAC Football Media Day 2022. (091721)

And then there was Deion Sanders. The Pro Football Hall of Fame took the HBCU and greater college football world by storm at Jackson State, winning back-to-back SWAC titles in 2021 and 2022. Sanders was quickly hired away to Colorado where he has turned that program around in a matter of two seasons.

Unlike the previous three coaches Simmons and Mack had to leave the HBCU space to get their goals accomplished.

Mack spent four seasons at North Carolina Central from 2014 through 2017 before joining Rice and later Tennessee as an assistant before spending a year with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Simmons talked about his decision to leave on top of the HBCU world to take a job as an assistant with a Power Four school.

“There guys before me that have made similar decisions to leave head coaching jobs at HBCUs to get to that level and try to navigate these these know these waters, of minorities being in positions of leadership,” Simmons told HBCU Gameday’s Vaughn Wilson. “130 plus FBS programs in America, less than 20 are led by hate by minority head coaches. Not saying that it couldn’t be done at FAMU. I have full confidence in myself and my abilities. But again, everything in life is about decisions — the tough decisions that have to be made. And for me I roll the dice, to make this move.”

Simmons’s dice roll has paid off in less than a year. FIU isn’t a Power Four job, but it is an FBS job — one step closer to what he says his goal is. Hopefully, the next star HBCU coach won’t have to make that move.

GREENSBORO – Shawn Gibbs will return to Aggieland. Only this time, he returns as the 23rd head football coach in North Carolina A&T State University (NCAT) football program history. A&T Director of Athletics Earl M. Hilton III announced Gibbs’ hiring on Friday. Gibbs, 49, replaces Vincent Brown, who spent two seasons at A&T. An introductory press conference for Gibbs is scheduled for Wednesday, December 18, at 11:30 a.m. in the Deese Ballroom inside the campus Student Center at the Greensboro, NC HBCU.

A native of Black Mountain, N.C., Gibbs spent 11 seasons at NCAT as the football program’s running backs and special teams coach under head coaches Rod Broadway (2011-17) and Sam Washington (2018-2021) before taking his first career head coaching position at Division II HBCU Fort Valley State University (FVSU) on February 10, 2022.

Gibbs posted a 22-9 record in three seasons with the Wildcats. In 2023, he led the Wildcats to the Florida Beach Bowl in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., where Fort Valley State earned a 23-10 win over Johnson C. Smith. During Gibbs’ tenure there, FVSU went 17-6 in Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) play.

“I want to welcome back Coach Gibbs to North Carolina A&T State University,” said Hilton. “We are excited for his return. A&T fans certainly have fond memories of the outstanding job he did coaching some of the best players in our school’s history while also maintaining a high level of respect from those same players. Shawn’s coaching history is very impressive.

“It is obvious he finds a way to get the best out of his players. Coach Gibbs understands the challenge ahead and has great enthusiasm and passion for North Carolina A&T. I know he can’t wait to get started.”

During Gibbs’ time as an assistant coach, the program earned a national reputation as Running Back U. The Aggies won Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) championships in 2014, 2015, and 2017-19 with Gibbs as a key member of the HBCU championship-winning coaching staff. He also served as the position coach to one of the most historic players in program history, running back Tarik Cohen.

HBCU North Carolina A&T NCAT Shawn Gibbs

Cohen became the MEAC’s all-time leading rusher, MEAC Rookie of the Year, and a three-time MEAC Offensive Player of the Year. In addition, Cohen was drafted in the fourth round by the Chicago Bears in 2017 and eventually became an NFL All-Pro. Cohen is the only player in MEAC history to win Offensive Player of the Year three times.

Shawn Gibbs also coached 2011 MEAC offensive player of the year Mike Mayhew, two-time first-team all-conference back and 2017 Celebration Bowl offensive MVP Marquell Cartwright, and Jah-Maine Martin, who owns the program record for single-season touchdowns (23).

The list of return specialists under Gibbs’ tutelage is also impressive. It includes such names as NCAA record-breaking punt returner Kris Gardin, former NFL standout Tony McRae, and record-breaking kickoff returner and Celebration Bowl hero Malik Wilson.

“It is a dream come true for me to accept the position as head football coach at North Carolina A&T State University,” Gibbs said. “My family and I are thrilled to return home to Greensboro, a community with such a special place in our hearts.

“Thank you to Chancellor James R. Martin II, Director of Athletics Earl Hilton, and the Board of Trustees for the opportunity to lead this prestigious and historic university’s football program. It is an opportunity I do not take for granted and a challenge I eagerly accept.”

FVSU had back-to-back eight-win seasons in 2022 and 2023, marking the first time in 24 years that has occurred in the HBCU program’s history. Gibbs brings with him 20 years of coaching experience. Before his time at NCAT he served 2007-10 as Grambling State University’s running backs coach under Broadway. Gibbs also served as running back coach at his alma mater, North Carolina Central University (NCCU), under Broadway from 2003-06. During his time there, NCCU won consecutive CIAA titles (2005-06).

Shawn Gibbs has a B.S. degree in behavioral and social sciences from NCCU.

HBCU North Carolina A&T NCAT Shawn Gibbs

He attended Owens High School and left it in 1992 as its all-time leading rusher (4,655 yards). As a standout back at NCCU (1993-97), he rushed for 1,687 career yards and averaged 5.1 yards per carry. Gibbs tied the school record for longest rushing touchdown from scrimmage in 1996 when he went 89 yards against Fayetteville State.

JACKSON, Miss. | The records are thrown out the window when teams reach the first weekend in December with the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) championship and a bid to the 2024 Celebration Bowl on the line. That is what is at stake on Saturday afternoon when SWAC East Division champion Jackson State hosts West Division champion Southern at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium. The HBCU football championship matchup is set to kick off at 1 p.m. on ESPN2.

No. 15/18 Jackson State (10-2, 8-0 SWAC), winners of eight consecutive games, faces Southern (8-4, 7-1 SWAC) for the second time this season, having played on Sept. 14 in Jackson in non-conference action. The Tigers won that game 33-15 by jumping out to a 20-point first-half lead behind a balanced offense although Southern was able to pass for 387 yards in the loss.

The two legendary HBCU football programs met two years ago in the championship game at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium with the Tigers winning their second consecutive conference championship with the victory. The two teams have met three times in the championship game with Southern leading 2-1 in those meetings.

Annually at the end of the season, and even before the end of the season in some cases, the HBCU football coaching carousel begins. It’s as certain to happen as the sun rises. In fact, it is not unique to HBCUs. It is a way of life for coaching at the college level. HBCU Gameday accumulated the names of some of the top candidates to fill the open Division I (FCS) head coaching vacancies. In a few cases, we’ve indicated where they might be a good fit to land, but that information is purely speculative.

HBCU

Alvin Parker (Currently: Head Coach Virginia Union University) – Parker has elevated his alma mater to the crest of the CIAA. With a 10-3 record (6-1 CIAA), the Panthers were the strength of Division-II, going three games into the NCAA playoffs. The won their first round game against Wingate )34-12), their second round game against Lenoir-Rhyne University (44-12) and will face Valdosta State on Dec.7.

HBCU

Sam Shade (Currently: Head Coach Miles University) – Shade really came to the attention of the college football world when he defeated the Alabama State Hornets in 2023. This season, the Golden Bears went a perfect 8-0 in SIAC play en route to a 10-3 season. They defeated Carson-Newman 14-13 in the opening round of the NCAA playoffs and eventually fell to the Valdosta State Blazers in the second round.

Teddy Keaton (Currently: Head Coach Clark-Atlanta University) – Keaton lifted the Clark-Atlanta football team from irrelevance to contender in just once season. Building his career at Allen University, he had already been successful in the SIAC. The CAU Panthers finished 7-3-1, with probably their crowning moment being their defeat of Bethune–Cookman on Sept. 21. The Panthers pushed the Wildcats to a 38-37 loss in Daytona Beach’s Municipal Stadium. It was a statement win for the Panthers seen on HBCU GO.

HBCU

Henry Frazier III – (Currently: Head Coach at Virginia State University) – Frazier led the Trojans to a 7-4 record (6-1 CIAA). They defeated the VUU Panthers 35-28 on Nov. 9 in the final regular season game of the season, before falling to them 17-13vin the first round of the NCAA playoffs. Frazier is no stranger to the HBCU realm as he had great success as the head coach of the NCCU Eagles during their transition from NCAA D-II to D-I.

Shawn Gibbs – (Currently: Head Coach at Fort Valley State) – Gibbs is no stranger to success. As a member of Rod Broadway’s NCA&T staff, Gibbs was a major part of the dynasty built in Greensboro, NC. The FVSU Wildcats finished 6-4 on the season (6-2 SIAC). Gibbs has been rumored as a choice for NCA&T’s head coaching position after the dismissal of Vincent Brown.

HBCU

Matt Leone – (Currently Offensive Coordinator at NCCU) – Leone has constructed one of the most prolific offenses in the MEAC. This season the Eagles scored at a 35.5 points=per-game clip with over 4,200 yards of total offense. The Eagles lost to eventual MEAC Champion South Carolina State by only three points in their Oct. 3 game in Orangeburg, SC. Leone previously served as offensive coordinator at Southern University.

Jordan Odaffer – (Currently Defensive Coordinator South Carolina State) – Odaffer has been the defensive coordinator for head coach Chennis Berry since his days at Benedict. Benedict won back-to-back HBCU national championships and attained Benedict’s first-ever top-5 ranking. This season, the MEAC champions Bulldogs allowed only 230 points the entire season. The Bulldogs will play the SWAC champion in the Celebration Bowl on Dec. 14

Maurice Flowers – (Currently Head Coach Johnson C Smith) – Flowers is no stranger to the HBCU realm. The miraculous turnaround of JCSU under Flowers has been nothing short of amazing. With an 8-2 record (5-2 CIAA), JCSU had two losses to end the otherwise dynamic season, which eventually cost the Golden Bulls a playoff spot. He has revived the Golden Bulls posting their best record since 1975.

Anton Sewell – (Currently Defensive Coordinator/Assistant Head Coach at Morgan State) – Sewell has been a staple on the defensive side for the last several years. Coming with Damon Wilson from Bowie State, Sewell’s defenses have been dominant. Sewell was also a part of Henry Frazier’s success along the way. He helped Bowie State to four straight conference titles. This season the Bears allowed under 150 yards rushing per game.

HBCU

Brian Jenkins – (Currently Offensive Coordinator/Assistant Head Coach Edward Waters University) – Jenkins is the only coach available in this pool with a D-I HBCU national championship under his belt. Jenkins’ Bethune-Cookman Wildcats were dominant from 2010-2014 going to three NCAA playoffs. As coach, he also defeated FIU of the FBS. He also served as head coach of Alabama State University.

HBCU

Torey Woodbury – (Current Special Teams Coordinator/ Tight Ends Howard University) – Woodbury was named assistant coach for the Bison in 2024. After a professional career where he played for the New York Jets, Buffalo Bills and New Orleans Saints, he returned to the college. He spent stints at Delaware State, Johnson C. Smith and at the Los Angeles Rams. He is abreast of the HBCU culture beginning with his record-setting career at Winston-Salem State.

HBCU

Quinn Gray – (Currently Head Coach Albany State University) – Gray has an offensive mind that is capable of putting up points. His Golden Rams combined for nearly 4,000 yards of total offense this season. Gray came to Asu after serving as offensive analyst for the University of Memphis.

Terry Sims – ( Currently Director of Football Operations Alabama State ) – Sims had success as head coach of the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats along with being an assistant on the B-CU staff for their three NCAA playoff games. As head coach, Sims had four winning seasons in his five years as head coach of the Wildcats. Sims is known as an aggressive recruiter.

Mississippi Valley State University (MVSU) has parted ways with head football coach Kendrick Wade after two seasons, according to reports from Football Scoop. Wade, an alumnus of MVSU, leaves with a 2-21 overall record. Despite the struggles, his tenure included a historic HBCU upset—a victory over Florida A&M that ended the Rattlers’ 23-game home winning streak.

Wade, who returned to MVSU in January 2023, was the 18th head coach to lead the Delta Devils. Known for his exceptional recruiting and motivational skills, Wade inherited a program in need of rebuilding. His first season saw the team produce two All-Americans and a finalist for the Jerry Rice FCS Freshman of the Year Award. Tight end Jaxson Davis and defensive back Omar Emmons earned All-American honors, while quarterback Ty’Jarrian William garnered national attention for his performance.

Prior to taking over at MVSU, Wade had built a reputation as one of the nation’s top wide receiver coaches. His coaching journey included successful stints at Delta State University, where he helped lead the team to an explosive offensive season and an 11-2 record in 2022, and Fort Valley State University, where he developed NFL talent like Shemar Bridges. Wade’s experience extended to Briar Cliff University and multiple high school programs, where he consistently elevated offensive playmakers.

As an HBCU graduate, Wade’s ties to MVSU and his passion for developing talent made his hiring a significant moment for the Delta Devils. However, the challenges of competing in the highly competitive Southwestern Athletic Conference proved insurmountable.

While the wins may have been few, Wade’s impact as a recruiter and developer of young talent underscores the complexity of coaching at the HBCU level. MVSU now begins the search for a new head coach to lead the program forward.

Less than two years after being announced as head coach at the nation’s largest HBCU, Vincent Brown Sr. has been fired as its head coach.

Brown posted the following message on Twitter on Wednesday morning, referring to the program as “their.”

“Thank you for the opportunity to serve the young men in the A&T football program. I have nothing but the highest hopes for their success,” Brown tweeted. “Not the results on the field that anyone expected, but my faith in how we went about our work and how we were building it is rock solid.

Shortly thereafter, North Carolina A&T released a statement from Earl Hilton III on Brown’s departure.

North Carolina A&T

This tweet comes one day after HBCU Gameday posted a story regarding a push from alumni and boosters to unseat him as the program’s head coach after back-to-back one-win seasons.

Vincent Brown was appointed as the head football coach at North Carolina A&T State University on January 6, 2023. He succeeded Sam Washington, becoming the 22nd head coach in the program’s history. He signed a five-year deal with a base salary of $365k per year.

In his inaugural season in 2023, Brown led the Aggies through their first year in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA). The team concluded the season with a 1–10 overall record and an 0–8 mark in conference play. Its lone win came against fellow HBCU and former MEAC rival Norfolk State.

The 2024 season saw North Carolina A&T striving for improvement under Brown’s leadership. They secured a notable victory against Winston-Salem State University, winning 27–20 in overtime before a sellout crowd of 21,500. This game marked Brown’s first home win and was a significant morale booster for the team.

However, that excitement was short-lived as the program continued to stumble. Those stumbles included humbling losses including a trio of HBCU football programs: a 66-24 blowout by archrival North Carolina Central, a 45-25 thumping by South Carolina State and a humbling 59–17 homecoming loss to Hampton University, which intensified scrutiny of the program’s direction. Ultimately, the team came up with an even worse record of 1-11 during Brown’s second season.

Despite these setbacks, Coach Brown remained optimistic, emphasizing the importance of progress and development within the team. He expressed confidence in his coaching staff and the players’ commitment to improvement. Earl Hilton, the North Carolina A&T AD, expressed his confidence in Brown as the losses mounted. However, others in East Greensboro felt otherwise and began pushing for Shawn Gibbs, according to HBCU Gameday sources.

HBCU Gameday will update the story as necessary.

Connell Maynor’s time at Alabama A&M is done.

The school announced on Monday that it has “relieved” Connell Maynor of his head coaching role after seven seasons at the helm.

“We want to thank Connell Maynor for his seven seasons at Alabama A&M University,” AAMU AD Dr. Paul Bryant said “We wish him well in all his future endeavors.”

Mayor went 40-32 during his tenure at Alabama A&M. He led the team to one SWAC title during the abbreviated spring season in 2021.

He had four winning seasons in a row to start his career, including the abbreviated spring season. However, the program has gone 15-19 since 2022, including a 6-6 record during the 2024 season.

Maynor arrived in Huntsville in 2018 following a four-year stint at Hampton University.

In 2014, Maynor was hired as the head coach at Hampton University, where he guided the Pirates in their final years in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) before the program transitioned to the Big South Conference. During his time at Hampton (2014–2017), Maynor led the team to a competitive record and helped develop talent while navigating the challenges of conference realignment.

Maynor’s head coaching career started off in a big way at Winston-Salem State University. He led the program to a 45-6 record during his time at WSSU, winning back-to-back CIAA titles in 2011 and 2012, going undefeated in both regular seasons — and culminating in a 2012 national championship game appearance.

A national search for the program’s next head coach will begin immediately, according to Alabama A&M’s release.

VALDOSTA, Ga. — The end to a historic 2024 HBCU football season for Miles College came on Saturday afternoon at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium as No. 22 Miles lost to No. 1 Valdosta State 33-17. The loss snapped the Golden Bears’ 10-game win streak but did not put a damper on a campaign that saw the team reach several significant milestones, including most victories, most consecutive wins in a single year, and a first-ever win in the NCAA Division II Playoffs.

Statistics 1 2 3 4 OT Total

Miles College (10-3) had several opportunities early to make the game a lot closer early. But the Golden Bears never got in the end zone in the first three quarters, being held to a 28-yard field goal by Roderick Smith over the first 30 minutes. After driving from its own 1-yard line to get the ball to midfield late in the second quarter, Kamren Ivory threw an interception that VSU (11-0) converted into a field goal at the end of the half for a 16-3 advantage.

The HBCU football champions of the SIAC held serve through most of the third quarter before VSU took control. Facing a third-and-goal from the Miles 18, the Blazers got the benefit of a personal foul penalty that gave them new life. Blake Hester punched it in from three yards out with 37 seconds left to extend the lead. On the ensuing kickoff, Miles was unable to recover the kickoff and VSU recovered at the Miles 13. After a penalty, Hester scored his third touchdown of the game on an 18-yard run, giving VSU two touchdowns in nine seconds and a 30-3 lead with 27 seconds left in the third.

Miles got touchdown passes from Ivory to Jaih Andrews (six yards) and Franck Pierre (20 yards) in the fourth quarter but the hole was far too steep from which to climb back even. Ivory finished with 224 yards passing, Jonero Scott was the top rusher (54 yards on 17 carries) and Jaquel Fells led the receivers with 92 yards on seven receptions.

HBCU Miles College NCAA Division II Playoffs

Defensively, Jeremiah Hudson-Davis had a team-high seven tackles and Lashon Young added six stops. Jamichel Rogers (five tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss) and Zion Sharpe (three tackles, sack) were strong on the line of scrimmage as well for the Golden Bears in the NCAA Division II Playoffs.

The 2024 Bayou Classic had a bit of everything — including some Boosie and the Southern University Human Jukebox band.

The Baton Rouge native made a halftime appearance with the Human Jukebox on a day when

Southern University claimed its third straight Bayou Classic victory, defeating Grambling State 24-14 at Caesars Superdome on Saturday. The Jaguars, who had already clinched the SWAC West title and a spot in the SWAC Championship Game, showcased their dominance on both sides of the ball.

Southern struck early with CJ Russell’s one-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. They added a second-quarter field goal by Joshua Griffin to extend their lead to make the game 10-7 at halftime.

After Boosie and the Human Jukebox cleared the field, the game was on and things got interesting.

Southern University, Bayou Classic

Grambling State’s Tylon Williams provided a spark with a thrilling 94-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, but Southern responded decisively in the third quarter. Quarterback Jalen Woods connected with Chandler Whitfield for a spectacular 41-yard touchdown pass, shifting the momentum back to Southern.

In the fourth quarter, Grambling narrowed the gap to 17-14 after Keilon Elder’s touchdown run. Southern sealed the victory with a game-clinching 45-yard touchdown run by Kendric Rhymes, who finished with 110 rushing yards and was a key figure in the Jaguars’ offensive success.

Defensively, Southern University dominated the trenches, forcing critical mistakes and limiting Grambling’s offensive output. Vincent Page Jr. led the charge with eight tackles and two tackles for loss, helping stifle Grambling’s attempts to mount a comeback.

With the win, Southern University moved to 8-4 and capped off another successful Bayou Classic and now sets its sights on Jackson, MS, where it will face SWAC East champion Jackson State next Saturday. The SWAC Championship Game will determine who advances to the Celebration Bowl to take on MEAC champion South Carolina State in a battle for HBCU football supremacy.

No word on whether or not Boosie will be accompanying Southern to Jackson.

Virginia Union University, one of the top programs in Division II HBCU football, delivered a commanding performance with a 44-12 win over Lenoir-Rhyne in the second round of the NCAA Division II playoffs. Playing at Helen and Leonard Moretz Stadium in Hickory, North Carolina, the Panthers controlled the game from start to finish and secured a spot in the quarterfinals against top-ranked Valdosta State.

Virginia Union set the tone early, jumping out to a 20-6 halftime lead. Jada Byers scored the first touchdown on a powerful run, establishing the Panthers’ dominance on the ground. Quarterback RJ Rosales added a rushing touchdown, while Brady Myers contributed with two field goals to extend the lead. The Panthers’ rushing attack was a key factor, totaling 345 yards on 59 carries. Byers led the effort with 185 yards and two touchdowns, showcasing why he’s one of the most dynamic players in HBCU football. Curtis Allen added 132 yards and two touchdowns, including an electrifying 65-yard run.

Rosales provided balance with his efficient passing game, completing 10 of 17 attempts for 179 yards and a touchdown. A 74-yard connection highlighted his ability to stretch the field when needed. Defensively, Virginia Union stifled Lenoir-Rhyne, allowing just 54 rushing yards and forcing two interceptions. Jabril Norman and Javon Earley each grabbed a pick as the Panthers’ defense controlled the game and held the Bears to a mere 3-of-13 on third-down conversions.

Despite Lenoir-Rhyne quarterback Jalen Ferguson’s 252 passing yards and two late touchdowns, the Panthers never let the outcome come into question. Virginia Union’s combination of explosive offense and relentless defense has solidified them as a serious contender in the playoffs. As they prepare to face Valdosta State, the Panthers aim to continue their strong run and represent HBCU football with pride on the national stage.

The Alabama A&M University Bulldogs traveled to Tallahassee to face the Florida A&M Rattlers (FAMU) in a makeup game that was delayed from the original date of Sept. 28 because of category 4 hurricane Helene that hit just east of Tallahassee, FL on Sept. 26. Heavy on the hearts of the players, coaches, and fans was the recent passing of HBCU football player Medrick Burnett, Jr.

Burnett passed on Wednesday from injuries sustained in the Magic City Classic on Oct. 26 in Birmingham. He was pronounced dead by the Jefferson County Deputy Coroner on Wednesday evening at UAB Hospital.

At just 20 years old, it was an even tougher loss for such a young and talented student-athlete.

The Bulldogs rolled into Tallahassee, obviously distracted from the events of the two days leading up to Friday’s game. Nowhere was it more evident than head coach Connell Maynor.

“I am just glad these young men were able to play today. The last 48 hours have been extremely difficult. Hearing the news that Medrick had passed, then hearing that he hadn’t and then finally getting the final news that he had passed was really tough. I applaud our team for even wanting to play this game at this time,” Maynor said.

HBCU Medrick Burnett FAMU Alabama A&M

The HBCU community showered an outpouring of love on Alabama A&M. During the fourth quarter, the FAMU announcer called for a moment of silence to salute Medrick Burnett, Jr. You could hear a pin drop at Bragg Stadium as the fans paid homage.

The game drew over 10,000 fans for an after-Thanksgiving game that could have been even more sparse. With temperatures in the low 50s, drizzles of rain throughout the game, and the biggest shopping day of the year, it was an impressive crowd under the circumstance that most students had returned to their homes to celebrate the holidays with their families.

FAMU would pull off a 28-20 victory in the final game of the season, ending with a 7-6 (5-3 SWAC) record. AAMU would finish the season at 6-6 (4-4 SWAC).

The Valdosta State Blazers and Miles College Golden Bears are set to clash in the second round of the NCAA Division II Football Playoffs on Saturday, December 30, at 1 PM.

Valdosta State comes into the game with one of the most dominant defenses in Division II football, allowing just 9.1 points per game and holding opponents to 245.3 yards per game. Offensively, the Blazers average an impressive 43.1 points per game, led by quarterback Sammy Edwards, who has thrown for 2,449 yards and 23 touchdowns. Running backs Blake Hester and Alfonso Franklin have combined for 1,325 rushing yards and 22 touchdowns, providing a balanced attack. Receiver Rodney Bullard is a key target, amassing 766 yards and nine touchdowns this season.

NCAA, Miles College

Miles College, riding high after its historic 14-13 win over Carson-Newman, has been a surprise contender this postseason. That victory marked the first NCAA playoff win for the HBCU program, showcasing their resilience.

The Golden Bears are averaging 29.8 points per game while holding opponents to 16.9 points. Their defense, which has forced 24 interceptions this season, will be critical in slowing down Valdosta State’s high-powered offense. Offensively, quarterback Kamren Ivory has thrown for 1,476 yards and 14 touchdowns, while running back Javonta Leatherwood has tallied 393 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns .

This matchup pits Valdosta State’s explosive offense and stifling defense against Miles College’s scrappy and opportunistic style. The Golden Bears will look to build on their momentum, but they face a formidable challenge against a Valdosta State team with championship aspirations. Expect a hard-fought battle with playoff intensity as both teams vie for a spot in the quarterfinals.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.– On Friday, November 8th the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) was made aware of allegations regarding the potential unauthorized usage of practice film. After conducting a comprehensive review of the information received, which included an IT analysis provided by DVSportINC, both oral and written statements, written statements from both institutions, individual interviews, along with the consultation of legal counsel, the Conference Office does not have enough substantial evidence to prove any allegations of unethical conduct by Jackson State University.

The Southwestern Athletic Conference has officially concluded its investigation but reserves the right to review any additional information received on this matter.

The Southwestern Athletic Conference upholds an extremely high standard of integrity with all aspects related to athletic competition and we will continue to take proactive steps to ensure fair competition within all sponsored sports.

How It Unfolded

According to sources, the allegations emerged when a UAPB player informed the coaching staff on Oct. 31 that a Jackson State player mentioned Tigers’ defensive personnel were watching UAPB practice footage in their team facility. Alarmed by the claim, UAPB head coach Alonzo Hampton reviewed the team’s video-sharing software and discovered that practice film had been accessed by the account of a former walk-on who was cut from the team in the spring.

Responses from Both Sides

Coach Hampton, along with UAPB athletic director Chris Robinson, contacted the former player, who denied providing Jackson State with access to the film. Speaking to ESPN, the player insisted that he did not share his credentials with anyone at Jackson State but admitted to previously sharing login information with former UAPB teammates. He also revealed that he was unaware his access to the system was still active.

Jackson State’s athletic department did not respond to ESPN’s requests for comment but did later respond to Blake Levine of WJTV.

“We are aware of the allegations brought to the attention of the conference,” officials told Levine. “After working with the conference office and having full transparency into our program, no violations were found and the matter was closed.”

Meanwhile, a UAPB spokesperson confirmed awareness of the investigation but declined further comment at the time.

Odums went 15-31 during his four years at the helm of Norfolk State University, including a 4-8 record in 2024. His best season was his first as he finished 6-5 after coming over to the Virginia HBCU from Southern University.

Odums had a much more successful stint at Southern, going 63-32 and recording winning seasons in eight of his last nine years at the SWAC school. He left in the spring of 2021, signing a five-year deal worth $240k annually.

Norfolk State University is set to start a national search for its next head coach. The program has struggled to find a long-term solution at head coach for decades, as Odums becomes the seventh consecutive coach to end his tenure in Norfolk with a .500 record or less and has one conference title since coming to Division I in 1997 — a 2011 MEAC title that was vacated due to the use of ineligible players.

The 2024 Eddie Robinson Award finalists have been announced by Stats Perform, and three HBCU coaches are among the 15 honored for their exceptional leadership in Division I FCS football. Named after legendary Grambling State coach Eddie Robinson, this award recognizes the national coach of the year and has celebrated excellence since 1987.

This year’s HBCU finalists include Chennis Berry of South Carolina State, Eddie George of Tennessee State, and T.C. Taylor of Jackson State. Each has made a profound impact on their programs, solidifying HBCU football’s presence on the national stage.

In his first season at South Carolina State, Berry led the Bulldogs to a 9-2 record, a perfect 5-0 mark in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, and a spot in the Celebration Bowl. His transformative leadership has reestablished SC State as a powerhouse.

Eddie George led Tennessee State to a 9-3 record and a share of the Big South-OVC title.

Eddie George, the fourth-year head coach at Tennessee State, guided the Tigers to a 9-3 record and a share of the Big South-OVC title—marking the program’s first conference championship since 1999. Tennessee State also secured its first playoff berth in over a decade, showcasing George’s ability to revitalize the historic HBCU program.

T.C. Taylor of Jackson State continued the Tigers’ dominance, achieving a 10-2 record and sweeping the SWAC East Division with an 8-0 conference mark. Jackson State will host the SWAC Championship Game as they aim for another Celebration Bowl appearance.

The Eddie Robinson Award winner will be announced on December 5, with the honor presented on January 4 at the Stats Perform FCS National Awards Banquet in Frisco, Texas.

With three HBCU coaches among the finalists, this year’s list underscores the vital role of HBCU football in shaping the future of the sport and upholding the legacy of Eddie Robinson, one of the most influential figures in college football history. Previous HBCU winners include Henry Frazier (Prairie View A&M), and Deion Sanders (Jackson State).

The first Division I HBCU football coaching search of the season is officially underway at Prairie View A&M as a former NFL defensive back’s time has run out.

Bubba McDowell has parted ways with Prairie View A&M, relieving him of his head coaching duties after three years at the helm. The news was first reported by Football Scoop and later confirmed by the school.

PVAMU athletic director Anton Goff thanked McDowell for his leadership and mentoring of the university’s student-athletes over the past three seasons in the statement.

Bubba McDowell was an NFL star before going on to coach in the HBCU ranks.

“Coach McDowell’s commitment to helping our student-athletes succeed in life both personally and professionally is admirable and a true reflection of his character.”

McDowell went 17-17 in his three seasons, including a SWAC West title during the 2023 season. PVAMU went 5-7 during the 2024 season — its worst record under McDowell.

The former University of Miami star and later NFL Pro Bowler with the Houston Oilers was a long-time assistant at the Texas-based HBCU prior to taking over following the departure of Eric Dooley to take over Southern University.

The University’s priority will be identifying a head coach who has the vision and leadership skills to move the program into the upper echelon of SWAC and FCS football, according to its statement.

Tennessee State University (TSU), an HBCU, will face Montana on Nov. 30 at 10:15 p.m. EST in the first round of the 2024 FCS playoffs. This marks TSU’s first postseason appearance since 2013 and the first under head coach Eddie George. The Tigers, who finished the season 9-3, will aim to secure their place in the second round against a tough Montana squad.

TSU has been a balanced team this year, averaging 340.7 total yards per game. Quarterback Draylen Ellis leads the offense with 2,747 passing yards and 22 touchdowns. Wide receiver Karate Brenson has been his top target, amassing 884 yards and four touchdowns. Defensively, the Tigers’ pass rush is spearheaded by Eriq George, who has recorded 12.5 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks this season.

Tennessee State University, FCS football

Montana, 8-4 on the season, brings a dynamic offense averaging 423.1 yards per game. The Grizzlies rely heavily on the ground game, led by Eli Gillman, who has rushed for 956 yards and 13 touchdowns. Quarterback Logan Fife complements the run game with 1,793 passing yards and 14 touchdowns. Montana’s defense is aggressive, particularly linebacker Ryan Tirrell, who has totaled 99 tackles and two sacks this year.

Key matchups include TSU’s defensive front against Montana’s rushing attack, which averages 201 yards per game, and Montana’s secondary against the playmaking ability of TSU’s Karate Brenson. TSU’s ability to pressure Fife and force turnovers could also be a decisive factor, as Montana has thrown six interceptions this season.

The winner will advance to face top-seeded South Dakota State on Dec. 7. This game offers Tennessee State University a chance to make a statement as an HBCU program on the rise under Eddie George’s leadership.

North Carolina Central, the other HBCU thought to have a shot at the FCS playoffs, will miss it with an 8-3 record.

GREENSBORO – The North Carolina A&T (NCAT) football team had its positive moments on Senior Day, including a 99-yard touchdown drive and a 97-yard kickoff return, but those sparks were not enough to overcome the five fumbles forced by the Elon Phoenix in the 31-21 season finale loss at Truist Stadium on Saturday.

The defeat marked the second consecutive season in which the Aggies won just a single game. Second-year head coach Vincent Brown is still searching for his first conference win since taking over the A&T program. After Saturday’s game, he said there is little margin for error in the ultra-competitive conference and acknowledged that the Aggies are still missing a few key pieces. He challenged the younger players on the team to remember what the disappointment of this season felt like as they go forward in their careers.

“I (told them) not to forget what this season looks like, what it feels like, and how we got here – that it should leave a very bad taste in all of our mouths if football is really important to you,” Brown said. “I told them I love them, I appreciate everything and all of their efforts from this season, that they fought to the very end. There’s not one game, even the one that got out of hand (William & Mary), in which they laid down.”

NCAT allowed their opponent to score first nine times this season, but they seemed to have a solid start after the defensive unit forced a three-and-out on the opening drive and the offense, led by graduate quarterback Justin Fomby, marched the ball down to the 37-yard line. However, A&T opted to punt on 4th-and-5.

Freshman DJ Page’s punt landed in the end zone, giving the Phoenix a 1st-and-10 from its 20. Elon then went 80 yards in six plays, ending with a 30-yard touchdown reception from quarterback wide receiver Jamarien Dalton.

A couple of drives later, the Aggies scored the equalizer after starting from the one-yard line. On 3rd-and-9 from their own two, Fomby hit Cameren Dalrymple with a short pass that turned into a 35-yard gain down the left sideline. A personal foul on Elon that occurred shortly after the tackle advanced the ball into Elon territory.

Despite the crucial penalty, three plays later, forced an A&T punt. Luckily for NCAT, Elon ran into Page on the punt, keeping the drive alive at the Elon 39. That’s when sophomore running back Shimique Blizzard broke away down the right side for a 39-yard touchdown, and the extra point tied the game 7-7.

Blizzard finished the day with 97 yards on 18 carries, his second-highest total of 2024. The Aggies could not get much going at all for the remainder of the second and third quarters, however, as Elon scored 24 unanswered points. The Phoenix were propelled by a monster performance from receiver Chandler Brayboy, who hauled in 12 catches for 118 yards and a touchdown.

He was the preferred target of quarterback Matthew Downing, who threw for two scores and ran in another en route to taking a 31-7 lead late in the third quarter on a 5-yard touchdown pass to Brayboy. Downing also completed 16 of his 21 pass attempts for 203 yards.

Brayboy’s score was followed promptly by a 97-yard kickoff return from freshman Cortez Lane that cut the lead to 18 points after a missed two-point conversion. The Phoenix missed two late-game field goals, the latter of which A&T’s Aaron Harris blocked on his Senior Day.

A thunderous 33-yard catch and run from senior tight end Nicholas Dobson, playing his final game at Truist Stadium, set up a two-yard touchdown run from freshman Daniel Coles and a successful two-point conversion pass to Ger-Cari Caldwell with a minute to play to cut Elon’s lead to 10.

NCAT

But NCAT ultimately ran out of time. Elon recovered the subsequent onside to secure the victory partly thanks to three lost A&T fumbles, two occurring in the second half. Fomby ended with a modest stat line of 190 yards for a touchdown and no interceptions. Dobson was the team’s leading receiver with four catches for 49 yards, and Lane followed him with three catches for 29 yards.

Freshman inside linebacker Jayden Williams led the team with eight tackles, and he partnered with senior defensive end Henry Daniel on a sack in the second quarter. Daniel tallied seven tackles, 3 1/2 for loss, and added another solo sack for his final NCAT game at Truist.

“The priority is recruiting,” Brown said. “We’ll be doing our postseason exit meetings beginning Monday. We have holidays coming up, but then we’ll be recruiting. We’re on the road trying to find the next crop of Aggies that can come in and help us win games.”
