In another historic milestone for HBCU gymnastics, Fisk University’s Morgan Price has once again captured the national spotlight. The standout junior gymnast claimed her second consecutive all-around title at the Women’s Collegiate Gymnastics National Invitational Championships (WCGNIC) on Friday night, scoring an impressive 39.350 to defend her crown.

Formerly known as the USA Gymnastics Collegiate National Championships, the WCGNIC showcases top-tier talent from across the nation. Price, competing for the only HBCU gymnastics team in the field, stood tall against elite competition. She outpaced SEMO’s Taylor Ingle, who finished as the runner-up with a 39.225, and Bridgeport’s Abigail Kenney, who took third with a 38.95.

The HBCU star qualified for all four individual event finals with top-eight finishes across the board, further underscoring her dominance. But Price won’t be representing Fisk alone in the next round. Her teammate Aliyah Reed-Hammon delivered a breakout performance of her own, finishing in the top two on both vault and beam to secure spots in both event finals.

Fisk gymnastics star Morgan Price launches off the beam at UGA.

Price’s repeat performance is not just a personal triumph — it’s another powerful chapter in the growth of HBCU gymnastics. Since joining Fisk, she’s been a trailblazer for the sport at historically Black colleges and universities, proving that excellence knows no boundaries. Earlier this year she became the first gymnast from an HBCU to record a perfect score.

“I know that that a lot of little gymnasts, whether they’re a minority or not, look up to us because they see a whole team full of black and brown gymnasts doing the sport that they love, and it can show that you can also do (college gymnastics) as well, as long as you keep working hard and putting your mind to it,” she told Forbes after repeating as champion.

With both Price and Reed-Hammon advancing to the event finals, Fisk University is once again proving that HBCU programs can shine on the national stage in gymnastics. The duo’s success highlights the continuing evolution of a program that has broken barriers and redefined what’s possible in collegiate athletics.

Talladega College has made strides in restoring its financial stability after overcoming multiple economic hurdles in the last 10 months at the longstanding HBCU, according to university leaders.

The recent news comes after Talladega College underwent a self-imposed legal audit to rectify its financial struggles, which included the university missing payroll, a decline in enrollment, and the private four-year institution tackling its deferred payments to vendors.

“We just saw a period where we sort of got off track from the thing that we have done historically,” said Talladega College interim president Walter M. Kimbrough during the school’s recent “State of the College” news conference last week. “The DNA is still there to me. We just got to get back and start being true to the DNA of Talladega College, and if we do that, we’ll be in a good situation.”

Bold Decision

In 2024, Talladega College’s operating budget was only $34 million. In September, Sara Weissman of Inside Higher Ed reported that enrollment decreased by 24% in recent years, the college faced a “significant” amount of debt, and issues with the school’s payroll delayed students’ receipt of financial aid refund checks.

Kimbrough and board chairwoman Rica-Lewis Payton made some “bold” decisions to improve the university’s financial trajectory. In February, the college announced that it was cutting its acrobatics, men’s volleyball, tumbling, men’s and women’s golf, and indoor track programs.

HBCU Talladega College

As a result, those cuts have allowed the school to save between $300,000 and $400,000 a month, according to WBRC-TV in Birmingham, Alabama. Kimbrough also stated that the college received a $15 million Hope Credit Union loan to strengthen its financial position and steer a more improved revenue model in the future.

“We have to trust but verify that accountability piece,” Lewis-Payton said, per WBRC-TV. “So, it’s not enough to just tell me; I need to see it. And we’re now putting into place those internal controls and accountability systems and processes.”

As the 157-year-old HBCU continues to progress financially, Kimbrough does not plan to raise tuition rates for students. However, if the rates increase in the future, he said the costs would remain cost-effective for students to earn an excellent education.

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Penn Relays Carnival is gearing up to celebrate a new class of legends. It is announcing the inductees for its prestigious 2025 Wall of Fame. This year’s honorees comprise four exceptional individuals and two remarkable relay teams, including a record-breaking HBCU relay team from Morgan State. Their contributions to the Carnival have left an indelible mark on the event’s rich history.

The formal induction ceremony is set to be a highlight of the 2025 Penn Relays. It will take place on the final day, Saturday, April 26th, at the iconic Franklin Field. Providing a fitting stage to recognize and celebrate these athletes’ outstanding achievements.

Morgan State’s fabled 1950 record-breaking 4×440 yard Championship of America relay team will be inducted into the Penn Relays Wall of Fame. The HBCU foursome consisted of Samuel LaBeach, Robert Tyler, William Brown, and George Rhoden.

HBCU Penn Relays Morgan State
Record Breakers

In 1950, Morgan’s sensational quartet ran off with the prize race at the Penn Relay Carnival in the record-breaking time of 3:13.6, breaking the previous Penn Relays record of 3:14.8 that had stood since 1939. The team featured LaBeach (49.9), Tyler (48.7), Brown (47.5), and Rhoden (47.5), giving Morgan its first victory at the Penn Relays and vindicated themselves for a disqualification that had deprived them of the same honor in 1949.

In 1949, the Morgan foursome’s track prowess was undeniable, having decisively outpaced a formidable field, including Cornell, NYU, Georgetown, Army, Manhattan, and Villanova. However, a controversial ruling snatched victory from their grasp. Despite finishing behind the Morgan team. NYU was awarded the win based on a claim that LaBeach, a member of the Morgan quartet, had illegally used his hands on the initial turn. Allegedly jeopardizing his team’s qualification. The sting of the decision was amplified by the significant margin of victory. NYU, timed at 3:15.6, trailed the Bears by approximately 20 yards. Giving rise to the presumption Morgan must have done close to a 3.14 for their triumph.

After Morgan’s 1950 breakthrough victory, the Bears established a dynasty, claiming four more 4×440 titles over the next 32 years. This period solidified Morgan’s reputation as a sprinting relay national powerhouse in collegiate track throughout the 1950s.

Nationwide Attention

The HBCU team continued to win at the prestigious Melrose Games in New York City and other meets throughout the country. The historic four ran a 3:09.4 at the Los Angeles Coliseum Relays, two seconds off the World Record. Morgan State College gained widespread recognition. Sports Illustrated, Time Magazine, Ebony Magazine, and the Afro-American Newspaper featured the team in their publications. The foursome became goodwill ambassadors for Morgan, both nationally and internationally.

The Penn Relays Wall of Fame was created in 1994 to celebrate the Carnival’s 100th running. The class of 2025 brings the number of inductees to 130 individuals and 117 relay teams. This year’s individuals and relay squads were selected by a panel of Penn Relays experts. Inductees are honored solely for their accomplishments at the Penn Relays; achievements in any other meets are not considered. The Penn Relays office will accept nominations of relay teams and individuals at any time and from any interested party.

The bats were alive and well across SWAC baseball this weekend, as 12 of the 15 games played saw the winning HBCU team score double-digit runs. From Thursday through Sunday, offensive explosions were the theme, with several programs putting up football-like scores in key conference matchups.

Alabama State led the way with a jaw-dropping 25-9 win over Alabama A&M in a seven-inning game on Saturday, capping off a sweep in which the Hornets scored 49 runs in total across three games. Bethune-Cookman also showed consistency at the plate, defeating Mississippi Valley State with double-digit outputs in two of three games, including a 15-5 victory on Saturday.

Florida A&M swept Jackson State while scoring 11 runs in back-to-back games after a more modest 7-3 win to open the series. Texas Southern erupted for 20 runs in one of its two wins over Alcorn State, showcasing serious offensive depth.

Runs show up in Rivalries

Even one of the top HBCU rivalries—Grambling State vs. Southern—was packed with fireworks. Southern edged out Grambling in two high-scoring affairs, 15-14 and 16-12, solidifying the Jaguars as one of the hottest hitting teams in the league. Southern’s Cardell Thibodeaux is the second-leading batter in NCAA Division I baseball with a .470 batting average.

There were only three games where the winning team didn’t reach double figures: Florida A&M beating Jackson State 7-3, Texas Southern with a 5-1 win over Alcorn State and Bethune-Cookman’s 6-5 win over Mississippi Valley State.

Four of the top 50 NCAA D1 teams in batting average are from the SWAC: Alabama State (13th, .322), Mississippi Valley State (33rd, .310), Southern University (40th, .308), Bethune-Cookman (41st, .308).

With SWAC play heating up, this weekend’s scoring spree signals a shift in momentum toward teams with elite hitting depth—and serves as a warning to any pitching staff not on top of its game.

The annual Circle City Classic will include two new teams when the HBCU battle takes place in September.

Morgan State and Miles College will clash on Sept. 27 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. It marks the first time both teams will play in the longtime HBCU classic. The bands — Purple Marching Machine and the Magnificent Marching Machine — will also join their respective teams for the popular HBCU showdown.

Alice Watson, the president and CEO of Indiana Black Expo, said that it is important “now more than ever to bring HBCU talent and exposure to the Midwest.”

“We hope that alumni and new fans alike will come out to Lucas Oil Stadium to support not only the tradition of the HBCU football game but also celebrate the talented bands,” Watson said in a press release.

In the 2024 campaign, Morgan State finished 6-6 and 3-2 in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play while Miles notched an unprecedented season. The Golden Bears finished 14-3 including a perfect 12-0 mark in Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action. Miles made a second round appearance in the NCAA Division II playoffs and finished with a national ranking for the first time in program history.

This season, former NFL’s Indianapolis Colts player Chris Goode will enter his first year at the helm of the Golden Bears’ program after former head coach Sam Shade departed Miles to become the football coach at Alabama A&M.

North Carolina Central played in the last two editions of the Circle City Classic. Last season, NCCU defeated Norfolk State 37-10.

The initiative began as a club-level team with aspirations to attain NCAA Division I status. By April 2024, the HBCU had appointed Duanté Abercrombie as the inaugural head coach. Marking a significant step forward for the program. The team is set to commence its first season in 2025. ?

Ben Crump, widely recognized for his work in civil rights law, has represented families in high-profile cases such as those of Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, and George Floyd. His dedication to justice and equality has earned him national acclaim.?

Crump expressed his enthusiasm for supporting TSU’s groundbreaking hockey program, saying, “I am honored to support Tennessee State University as they break barriers and bring diversity to the sport of hockey.” He emphasized that the team’s formation is about more than just competition; it is also about expanding opportunities and challenging stereotypes.

“This team represents more than just competition on the ice — it’s about expanding opportunities, challenging stereotypes, and paving the way for future generations of Black athletes in hockey. I encourage others to join me in this important cause and help TSU make history.”

Morgan State wrestling made history with its first-ever appearance in the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) Championships, marking a significant milestone for the only HBCU competing in Division I wrestling. Returning to the sport after nearly three decades, the Bears entered the EIWA Championships looking to make an impact against some of the toughest competition in collegiate wrestling.

Morgan State Earns Three EIWA Place Winners

Competing against powerhouse programs like Lehigh, Army, and Navy, Morgan State finished 11th out of 12 teams but walked away with three EIWA place winners, setting the stage for future success.

Xavier Doolin (285 lbs) led the way with a 4th-place finish, becoming Morgan State’s highest placer in the tournament. Doolin showcased his strength early, securing a decisive 8-1 victory over Navy’s Jake Lucas before falling to Lehigh’s Owen Trephan in the semifinals. He battled through the consolation bracket before dropping a 10-4 decision to Army’s Brady Colbert in the 3rd-place match. Doolin’s top-four finish is a strong sign that Morgan State’s heavyweight division is ready to compete at the highest level in the EIWA.

HBCU Morgan State EIWA

At 125 pounds, Julian Dawson secured an 8th-place finish, reaching the placement rounds but falling in his final match to Navy’s Nick Treaster by tech fall (15-0). Similarly, Cooper Lockhart (165 lbs) placed 8th, displaying resilience throughout the tournament before losing by fall to Drexel’s Cody Walsh (2:00) in the 7th-place match.

A Strong First Step for Morgan State Wrestling

Although the Bears did not produce any NCAA qualifiers, their first showing in the EIWA Championships proved they could compete at the Division I level. With three place winners, including a top-four heavyweight, Morgan State is laying the foundation for a program that can elevate HBCU wrestling on the national stage.

Morgan State wrestling’s journey is just beginning, and with continued development, the Bears are poised to make even greater strides in future EIWA Championships.

BALTIMORE, Md. — Morgan State University’s HBCU wrestling program is bolstering its coaching staff with a familiar face. Head Coach Kenny Monday announced today the appointment of his son, Kennedy Monday, as an assistant coach.

This addition brings a fresh perspective and a wealth of experience to the Bears’ program. Kennedy, a decorated wrestler in his own right, is expected to contribute significantly to the team’s training regimen, recruitment efforts, and overall strategic development.

“We’re extremely excited to add Kennedy to our Morgan State wrestling staff as a competition analyst and performance breakdown specialist, said Monday. “He has been instrumental in the team’s preparation as we head into the EIWA conference tournament March 6-7.”

Monday added to Kennedy’s accolades that extend beyond collegiate wrestling. “Kennedy is also competing on the USAW Senior Level Circuit, an Olympic hopeful training for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.”

]]>
The route for HBCU and other non-Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) college football players seeking to achieve their NFL dreams could become even harder in the future due to the impact of the transfer portal and lack of access to the annual NFL combine, according to a recent ESPN report.

Some of the greatest NFL players like Walter Payton, Jerry Rice, Aeneas Williams, Shannon Sharpe and Michael Strahan played at HBCUs – today’s Football Championship Subdivision level programs – before dominating at the NFL level. However, when the Pro Football Hall of Famers played in college, they didn’t have access to name, image and likeness nor were they forced to deal with the impact of the transfer portal.

Only seven (FCS) players were invited to the 2025 NFL Combine nearly a week ago in Indianapolis. With the seismic changes to the transfer portal that took place ahead of the 2021 college football season, along with last year’s amendment to the transfer rule of allowing programs unlimited players to transfer without penalties (barring they met academic obligations), it has resulted in fewer FCS players receiving an invite to the NFL’s weeklong showcase at Lucas Oil Stadium due to the perception of more NFL-ready talent at the FBS ranks.

NFL red flags for non-transfers?

Zach McKinnell, editor and owner of FCS Football Central, reported Tuesday on X (formerly known as Twitter) that multiple scouts from professional football teams who attended the Senior Bowl and HBCU Legacy Bowl revealed that FCS prospects who choose to remain at the FCS level instead of darting for FBS programs are labeled as “potential red flags” at the next level.

“Were they scared of better competition, are they not good enough to play at that level?” McKinnell tweeted.

ESPN’s Kalyn Kahler reported that an average of 20.5 players from smaller non-FBS programs received invites to the combine between 2016 to 2021, prior to changes to the transfer portal. However, the mean number of players has dropped to 14.5 since 2022, the lowest mark in the last decade.

Even more, no players from the Division II or the Division III ranks earned invites to the last two combines. But prior to changes to the transfer rule, an average of 3.5 sub-FCS players earned combine invites from 2015 to 2021, per the report.

The report also indicated that 126 of the 330 players who received invites to the combine transferred at some level of college football at least once, with many of the players taking their talents to programs on the same level. Additionally, 28 of those 330 have transferred no less than once from a non-FBS program. Compare that to the 2018 combine, an event where only two players among 336 invited players transferred to a higher-level college football program – meaning NAIA to D-II or FCS to FBS – after playing at a non-FBS program.

Some of the higher-profile HBCU prospects hoping to hear their names called in this year’s NFL draft include Alabama A&M’s Carson Vinson and Donovan Eaglin, Jackson State’s Irv Mulligan and Robert McDaniel, Florida A&M’s Kendall Bohler, Howard’s Jarrett Hunter, Virginia Union’s Jada Byers, Hampton’s Elijah Burris, South Carolina State’s Aaron Smith and Alabama State’s James Burgess, to name a few.

The 2025 NFL draft will take place April 24-26 at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

JACKSONVILLE, FLA. – USTA Florida awarded its first-ever HBCU Tennis Program Grant to Edward Waters University (EWU), marking a significant milestone in both the university’s and USTA Florida’s history.

Held at the Edward Waters University Tennis Complex on October 7, 2024, this event signified the official launch of USTA Florida’s HBCU Tennis Program Grant, which aims to provide critical funding to HBCU institutions in Florida.

The grant, worth $100,000, will help EWU, the first Historically Black College in the state, further develop its tennis program, which played in its inaugural tennis season at the beginning of 2024.

Laura Bowen, Executive Director of USTA Florida, highlighted the significance of the grant and USTA Florida’s commitment to HBCUs and the Black tennis community. “This grant is more than just money,” she said. “Today marks an important shift in USTA Florida’s history of service to our state and to the beautiful sport of tennis.”

This grant is designed for immediate impact. EWU can apply the funds toward various needs, including court improvements, tennis equipment, scholarships for Florida students, and additional coach education. Bowen emphasized that this flexibility was shaped by conversations with Dr. Ivana Rich, Associate Vice President and Director of Athletics at EWU, and other HBCU leaders in Florida.

Dr. Rich shared her vision for the growth of the university’s tennis program and the opportunities it will create for student-athletes. “We are deeply grateful to USTA Florida for awarding Edward Waters University this HBCU College Tennis Program Grant,” she said. “It represents a significant step forward for our newly established women’s tennis program and reinforces our commitment to providing quality athletic opportunities for our student-athletes. This support will enable us to enhance our tennis offerings, provide an exceptional experience for our student-athletes and engage more of our community in the sport of tennis.”

The team is looking forward to putting the grant to use and Head Coach Marc Atkinson is excited to see the impact of the grant. “This HBCU Tennis grant will have a transformative effect on our tennis program and the student-athletes it serves,” he said. “With this grant, we will be able to purchase new equipment and training tools for our players, offer additional scholarships to attract talented student-athletes, and enhance our travel budget to compete in more tournaments.”

Many of the players expressed their thanks to USTA Florida and are ready to get to work as the 2025 season approaches. “These improvements will not only benefit our current tennis players but will also help us attract and develop future talent, elevating the entire program to new heights,” Coach Atkinson added.

Bowen closed out the event restating USTA Florida’s commitment to growing HBCUs and supporting EWU in any way possible. “This grant comes with a promise that we will continue to be your partner in growing this program for as long as it is in existence. We will stay connected with you, and together, we will develop more ways to support Edward Waters tennis.”

Howard University, the nation’s only historically Black college and university (HBCU) with an NCAA Division I swim program, has once again made history. On February 23, 2025, the Howard Bison men’s swimming and diving team clinched the Northeast Conference (NEC) Championship title for the second time in three years. The four-day competition in Geneva, Ohio, saw the Bison maintain a consistent lead, culminating in a decisive victory secured by their performance in the final event, the 400 Free Relay.

The championship meet showcased exceptional performances across various events. In the 200 Free Relay, graduate student Tristan Stevens, seniors Tai Afrik and Darin Johnson, and junior Taj Benton delivered a strong performance, finishing with a time of 1:21.88.

The Bison divers also made a significant impact, sweeping the podium in the 3-meter dive. Senior Zay Swilley led the group with a score of 270.55, followed by NEC standout Jordan Walker with 242.84 points, and freshman Zion Wilson securing third place with 233.90 points.

Howard University’s swimming program holds a unique position in collegiate athletics. Since 2016, following the discontinuation of North Carolina A&T University’s women’s swim team, Howard has been the sole HBCU offering an NCAA Division I swimming and diving program.

The program has a rich history of promoting diversity in aquatics and challenging stereotypes about Black swimmers. Under the leadership of Head Coach Nic Askew, the team has seen a resurgence, breaking numerous school records and achieving significant milestones, including their first conference title in over three decades in 2023.

The 2025 NEC Championship victory not only underscores the team’s dedication and hard work but also highlights Howard University’s commitment to excellence in athletics. As the only HBCU with a swim program, the Bison continues to inspire and pave the way for future generations of Black swimmers, demonstrating that with determination and support, they can excel at the highest levels of competition.

On March 13-15, several Bison will travel to Ocala, Fla., for the CSCAA National Invitational Championships.

Corrinne Tarver is out as head coach, according to a release by the university. Assistant coach Nuriya Mack has been named the interim coach.

Details of Tarver’s departure were not indicated in the release, but the university noted it will soon begin a national search for the next head coach. Tarver was the first black woman to win an NCAA championship.

“We thank Coach Tarver, who joined Fisk to lead the first HBCU women’s gymnastics program,” the release read. “Under coach Tarver and a partnership with Black Girls Gymnastics, a strong foundation for the gymnastics program was cultivated. Fisk looks forward to a continuation of excellence in academics, athletics, and gymnastics.”

Mack was hired by Tarver as Meet Director and Social Media Manager in 2023 for the program. She has contributed significantly to the team’s success. Nuriya brings a wealth of experience in coaching, athlete development, and event management to the role of interim head coach.

]BALTIMORE, Md. — The Morgan State Acrobatics & Tumbling team is set to make history on Saturday, February 15, as they travel to the West Coast for the first time in the history of the HBCU program.

The Bears will take on the No. 4-ranked University of Oregon in Eugene, marking a pivotal moment in their journey within the National Collegiate Acrobatics & Tumbling Association (NCATA).

The Bears enter the matchup following a hard-fought battle against No. 2 Quinnipiac, where they fell 270.565 to 246.745. Despite the loss, Morgan made waves in the sport by becoming the first team to successfully execute a split during an acrobatics and tumbling routine.

Freshman Lauren Perkins stood at the center of the groundbreaking moment, flawlessly pulling the split and helping cement Morgan’s reputation as an HBCU program on the rise.

With this milestone performance, the Bears have set the tone for the rest of their season. The team remains focused on refining their routines, building on their strengths, and pushing the boundaries of what they can accomplish in NCATA competition.

Awaiting them on the West Coast is a powerhouse Oregon squad, led by head coach Taylor Susnara. A former Oregon All-American and assistant coach, Susnara has helped maintain the Ducks’ legacy as one of the sport’s top programs. Known for their skill, strategy, and precision, Oregon finished last season with a 4-4 record and is looking to establish dominance early in 2025.

This past weekend, teams from across the country gathered at HBCU Florida A&M University’s Hansel Tookes Sr. Student Campus Recreation Center for the annual Seminole-Rattler Wrestling Invitational. The NCAA Wrestling event, a collaboration between FAMU and Florida State University, brought together collegiate wrestlers eager to test their skills on the mat.

Among the participating teams were The University of Alabama, Clemson, LSU, Florida State, The University of Georgia, The University of Florida, and The University of Miami. They were joined by Florida Gulf Coast University, UCF, The University of North Florida, Florida International, Kennesaw State, Louisiana Tech, San Jose State, and Troy University in a highly competitive meet.

The legacy and challenges of collegiate wrestling

While only 77 Division I schools sponsor wrestling as an NCAA sport, many more carry it at the club level. Wrestling, one of the oldest recorded sports, has origins dating back 15,000–20,000 years, as depicted in ancient cave drawings.

FAMU, like many colleges, once sponsored wrestling as an NCAA sport but discontinued the program. Following the passage of Title IX in 1972, many schools dropped wrestling to achieve gender equity in athletic programs. Despite this, wrestling remains a thriving club sport at several universities.

The Seminole-Rattler Invitational featured a full day of wrestling, with men’s and women’s divisions competing across various weight classes. The event showcased FAMU’s brand-new, logo-embossed mat, with three matches running simultaneously in the Tookes Recreation Center. Competitors ranged from the 125-pound weight class to the 245-pound division, making for an exciting display of athleticism and skill.

Overcoming NCAA sponsorship barriers

Many conferences seeking to maintain NCAA recognition for wrestling have partnered with affiliate teams. For example, the Big 12 Conference merged with the Western Wrestling Conference to meet NCAA requirements. Similarly, the Big Ten and ACC have had to strategize their conference alignments to sustain wrestling at the collegiate level.

HBCU FAMU

Delaware State to launch women’s wrestling program

In an exciting development for HBCU wrestling, Delaware State University is set to introduce a women’s wrestling program in the 2025-2026 season. This initiative is being supported by HBCU Wrestling, a foundation that has donated $1.25 million to help launch the program.

HBCU Wrestling is dedicated to re-establishing wrestling programs at Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Their mission, as stated on their website, is to “restore and establish Women’s and Men’s wrestling programs at HBCUs, ensuring up to a 10-year commitment to NCAA-sanctioned wrestling programs, scholarships, competitive coaching salaries, and operating budgets.”

Additionally, Morgan State University is expected to be the next institution to benefit from HBCU Wrestling’s expansion efforts.

HBCU FAMU

FAMU’s Wrestling legacy is rich with tradition

FAMU has a proud history of wrestling excellence. In the early 1970s, before the program was discontinued, the school produced standout athletes, including Harold and Carroll Roberts. The twin brothers, both state champions, regularly defeated competitors from Florida State, The University of Florida, and The University of Miami. They remain honored in the FAMU Sports Hall of Fame.

In more recent years, Roland Pitts emerged as one of the greatest wrestlers in FAMU’s history. Competing in the 197-pound weight class, Pitts was a multi-time All-American and an Academic All-American. He later served in the U.S. Armed Forces, achieving the rank of Captain and excelling as a Ranger and member of a brigade combat team. Pitts played a crucial role in keeping wrestling alive at FAMU, despite its status as a non-NCAA sport.

The Future of Wrestling at HBCUs

With renewed interest and financial support, HBCU wrestling is experiencing a resurgence. The efforts of organizations like HBCU Wrestling and the passion of athletes, coaches, and alumni continue to push for the return of wrestling as a fully sponsored NCAA sport at FAMU and other historically Black institutions.

The Seminole-Rattler Invitational was a testament to the resilience and competitive spirit of collegiate wrestling, proving once again that the sport has a home at FAMU.

COLUMBIA, SC – Senior North Carolina A&T (NCAT) indoor track and field women’s hurdler/sprinter Lucheyona Weaver headlined the day at the University of South Carolina’s Gamecock Challenge on Saturday by beating Olympian Gabbi Cunningham in the 60-meter hurdle final at the Carolina Indoor Track and Field Complex. In addition to Weaver’s outstanding showing, the A&T men’s and women’s HBCU indoor track and field teams found a sea of success with numerous top-three finishes.

Weaver went toe-to-toe with Cunningham, who appeared in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games for the 100H. Weaver fell behind Cunnigham in the preliminaries as she crossed in 8.36 to qualify second, but in the finals, she overtook the Nike-sponsored athlete by posting an 8.16 to Cunninham’s 8.31.

The two-time Coastal Athletic Association 60H champion has six career 60H wins, including two this season. Weaver is ranked No. 12 nationally in the women’s 60H.

On the men’s side, junior Thomas Smith IV (7.95), sophomore Isaiah Taylor (7.97), and junior Jason Holmes (8.20), respectively, qualified first, second, and fifth in the 60H. Later in the day, Holmes and Smith IV battled it out in the finals, finishing milliseconds apart.

Both marked a 7.8 on the official’s sheet, but Holmes (7.772) placed first and Smith IV (7.777) took second while claiming a new personal record. Taylor finished sixth in 8.37.

Senior Spirit Morgan made her second appearance and took her second win as an Aggie, conquering the women’s high jump in 5 feet, 8 inches.

Another HBCU track and field newcomer, sophomore Dyimond Walker, made his Aggie debut Aggie in the men’s 600 meters. Walker is a transfer from New Mexico Junior College, and in his first Division I race, he managed to finish second in 1:19.76.

The other top runs of the day came from senior Fajr Kelly (2:07.76), who placed second in the women’s 800m, and sophomore Serenity Brazell (56.62) who placed second in the women’s 400m.

Taking some more top spots in the women’s field events included graduate student My’Khiyah Williams (5 feet, 6 inches) claiming second in the high jump; junior Olivia Dowd (38 feet, 5 ½ inches) finding third in the triple jump; and graduate student Julieth Nwosu (48 feet, 4 ¾ inches) and junior Taylor Reagor (44 feet, 6 ¾ inches) took second and third in the shot put.

Freshman TyHeak Buie placed second in the men’s triple jump at 51 feet, 2 ¼ inches. Buies previous personal record was 49 feet, 3 ¾ inches from the Corky Classic at Texas Tech University last month.

Next week, the HBCU track teams at North Carolina A&T will be headed north to Lynchburg, Va., for Liberty University’s Liberty Opener. The teams will compete February 7-8 at the Liberty Indoor Track Complex.

Fisk University gymnast Morgan Price has been a history maker since she stepped on campus at her HBCU, and she made more history on Saturday night.

The junior gymnast scored a perfect 10 in the uneven bars — making her the first gymnast from an HBCU to record a perfect score.

The meet took place in Philadelphia at Temple University.

Morgan Price, born in Lebanon, Tennessee, in 2005, began her gymnastics journey at the age of two. She trained at Texas Dreams Gymnastics and was a standout at Coppell High School in Texas. Initially committing to the University of Arkansas, Price made a pivotal decision in 2022 to join Fisk University, contributing to the establishment of the first-ever gymnastics program at a historically Black college or university (HBCU).

Morgan Price, Fisk University

In her freshman year, Price’s exceptional talent was evident. She secured First-Team All-American honors at the 2023 USA Gymnastics Women’s Collegiate National Championships, placing third in the floor exercise and finishing in the top ten in the all-around category.

The following year, Price made history by becoming the first gymnast from an HBCU to win a national title. She clinched the all-around championship at the 2024 USA Gymnastics Women’s Collegiate National Championships with a score of 39.225.

Beyond her athletic achievements, Price has embraced her role as an ambassador for Fisk University and HBCU gymnastics. She has been featured in national media, including an interview with Gayle King on CBS Mornings, where she discussed her commitment to representing and uplifting HBCUs in collegiate gymnastics.

Saturday’s history-making performance was the latest, but it is unlikely to be her last.

JACKSON, Miss. | Jackson State University Vice President/Director of Athletics Ashley Robinson announced Rob Ford II as the new head coach of the Tigers’ HBCU golf programs.

“This is an exciting time at Jackson State,” Robinson said. “We are bringing back one of our winningest programs back, and not only bringing both back, but we are bringing them back with an alum leading the way. We are excited to have Robert (Ford), a two-time Jackson State graduate, lead the way and build this program.”

Ford returns to Jackson State where he earned his degree in Health & Physical Education with a minor in Mass Communications. He also finished with a Master’s in Sports Science.

“I am excited to be back home,” Ford said. “I am excited to get the chance to challenge the minds of our student-athletes and change their lives on and off of the golf course.”

He comes to Jackson State University after a stint as the head coach of the golf programs at Andrew College (Cuthbert, Ga.) for the last year where he oversaw and managed all aspects of the team, while also developing and implementing training programs to enhance the skills of the athletes. Prior to his stop at Andrew College, Ford served as the assistant coach at Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) member, Prairie View A&M. He also served as the second assistant golf professional at Annadale Golf Club in Madison (Miss.) where he provided lessons and clinics to golfers of all skill levels.

Ford looks to revitalize the HBCU golf programs that have been dormant since 2017. Prior to that, the women (started in 1994) won 14 SWAC championships and became the first HBCU to appear in the NCAA Tournament. Meanwhile, the men won 25 SWAC titles, including 23 straight from 1989 to 2011, and became the first HBCU men’s team to appear in the NCAA Tournament.

UNCF is proud today to announce a $100,000 gift from tennis champion Coco Gauff to provide scholarships for historically Black college and university (HBCU) students playing competitive tennis.

“We are incredibly grateful to Coco Gauff for her generous $100,000 gift to UNCF, which will significantly impact the lives of HBCU students aspiring to excel in competitive tennis,” said Maurice E. Jenkins, Jr., executive vice president and chief development officer, UNCF. “Her commitment not only showcases her dedication to education and athletics but also inspires the next generation of student-athletes to pursue their dreams. This gift reinforces the importance of supporting our young leaders and ensuring they have the resources necessary to succeed both on and off the court.”

The Coco Gauff Scholarship Program will be administered by UNCF and scholarships will be awarded to eligible students who play competitive tennis starting in May. Details will be forthcoming on UNCF.org/scholarships.

As one of UNCF’s youngest major gift donors, Gauff, who is 20, says she supports HBCUs because she recognizes their value and the role they play in the community. Several members of Gauff’s family have attended or currently attend HBCUs.

“My family has a deep-rooted history with HBCUs, going all the way back to my great, great grandfather. From aunts and uncles to cousins, HBCUs have played a huge role in shaping who we are. Supporting UNCF in creating opportunities for student-athletes in tennis means a lot to me. As a young Black athlete, I understand how impactful it is to see people who look like me thriving in both sports and education. I want to help the next generation of student-athletes continue pursuing their passion for tennis while reaching their academic goals. My hope is that this scholarship gives more young Black players the confidence to chase their dreams, knowing they have a strong community behind them and a bright future ahead.”

In recognition of Gauff’s 2023 U.S. Open victory, the United States Tennis Association (USTA) committed $3 million to refurbishing tennis courts across the country. North Carolina Central University was granted $21,000 as a part of this initiative.

Coco Gauff has won nine Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) – tour level singles titles including the 2023 US Open and the 2024 WTA Finals. She has also won nine doubles titles including the 2024 French Open.

MONTGOMERY, Ala.- On the afternoon of February 1st, 2025, Huntingdon College played host to HBCU Alabama State University in the first intercollegiate Women’s Flag Football game within the state of Alabama.

Led by head coach Angela Rowe, the Hawks controlled the field on both sides of the ball, passing for 304 yards and forcing 4 turnovers in a dominant 42-0 victory over the Division I HBCU Alabama State Hornets.

Deferring to the second half, the Hawks started strong, forcing a turnover on downs. Huntingdon’s offense took the field on the ensuing possession and wasted no time finding their rhythm. Freshman quarterback Mary Wade Latham completed a strike down the middle of the field to Megan Connor on the Hawks’ first play before finding wide receiver Kelis Russell 22 yards downfield for the first touchdown in program history.

Following two Hornet rushes, Tierra Russell jumped a route, recording the program’s first interception, and took it 49 yards down the field, setting the Hawks up with a first and goal on the other end. It took Huntingdon just two plays to find the endzone again, with Latham completing her second touchdown pass of the quarter, this time to Naimah Rahmaan from 6 yards out, upping the Hawks lead to 12-0 entering the second quarter.

After forcing yet another turnover on downs as the second quarter began, Alabama State University intercepted Latham, nearly taking it the distance of the field to provide the Hornet offense with a first and goal of their own. With their backs against the wall, the Hawks stood strong, with Russell recording her second interception of the half to flip possession back to the Hawks. Huntingdon’s offense would be forced to punt on the following possession, but another turnover on downs for Alabama State held the Hawks lead at 12-0 entering the halftime break.

Starting the second half with possession of the ball, the Hawks wasted no time finding the endzone again, this time on a 59-yard catch and run from Hiryaunna Mays. A successful two-point conversion brought Huntingdon’s advantage to 20-0. Mays followed up with a 23 yard punt return on the following possession to put Huntingdon’s offense back in positive field position for another drive.

For her fourth touchdown throw of the afternoon, Latham connected with Naimah Rahmaan for the second time, this time from 8 yards out, to bring the score to 28-0 midway through the third quarter.

Following another turnover on downs for the HBCU Hornets, quarterback Emily Stricklin led the Hawks on a drive that resulted in yet another touchdown for Rahmaan, raising the lead to 36-0 entering the fourth and final quarter.

Alabama State’s opening possession of the fourth quarter would come to an abrupt end once again, with Ashley Sajous recording the Hawks’ third interception of the afternoon. Stricklin took advantage of the opportunity, finding De’Aysia Williams from 8 yards out to push the lead to 42-0.

As the game drew near, Huntingdon continued to dominate defensively, with Azariah Greer’s interception putting a stamp on the Hawks’ emphatic Women’s Flag Football victory.

ARLINGTON, TEXAS – All season long, freshman Victorya White has been the headliner and the compass pointing toward a bright North Carolina A&T future in collegiate bowling. On Saturday, during the second day of the Prairie View A&M University Invitational at the International Training and Research Center (ITRC), A&T freshman Jasmine Hall gave reason to believe the HBCU bowling program is in good hands in years to come.

Hall knocked down 1,168 total pins on Saturday during traditional play for a five-game average of 233.60 to place third overall as an individual. Meanwhile, the Aggies, the 10th-ranked team in the nation according to the National Tenpin Coaches Association (NTCA) Coaches’ Poll, finished 5-0 for the second consecutive day.

The Aggies had a total pinfall of 5,520 on Saturday. Through 10 games at the PVAMU Invite, the Aggies have totaled 10,745 pins for an average of 214.9 in five games.

Preseason Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) bowler of the year, Maya Avilez placed fifth on Saturday with a 1,160 total pinfall and an average of 232.0. It puts her and Hall in a position to earn all-tournament honors.

White, a four-time winner of MEAC weekly awards, had her typical weekend. White bowled four games, but they were all magnificent, posting 247, 236, 257, and 243 in the games she bowled. White did have the second-highest average of any player at the tournament, with four or more games bowled (245.75).

Junior Julianna Sams stepped in during the first matchup against Texas Southern, where she bowled a 203 pinfall in a 1,098-840. The other four Aggies who bowled against Texas Southern also went over a 200 pinfall, led Avilez’s 237. Hall added a 230, followed by senior Laura Garcia. Senior Chloe Newberry completed the domination with a 201.

A day after defeating top-ranked Vanderbilt and third-ranked Nebraska, the HBCU got a chance to face defending NCAA national champion Jacksonville State, the second-ranked team in the nation. White stepped in with her 247, and Avilez added a 221. Hall contributed with a 214, and Garcia posted a 210 total pinfall.

HBCU North Carolina A&T bowling

Garcia finished the day with a 1,055 total pinfall, averaging 211.0 over five games.

Fifth-ranked Arkansas State would face the HBCU squad next but could not slow down the Aggies rhythm. Hall flirted with a perfect game as she posted a 289 total pinfall to lead the Aggies to a 1,141-1,066 win over the Red Wolves. White’s 236 contributed to the win, along with Avilez’s 225. A&T’s matchup against fourth-ranked Youngstown State gave the Aggies a chance to beat the top five teams in the country in one weekend of action, and that’s what they did.

North Carolina A&T defeated the Penguins 1,155-1,067. White led the way with a 257, and not far behind was Avilez’s 254 in the monster win. Hall and Garcia bowled 223s. A&T closed out the day with a 1,060-976 win over Duquesne as White led the way with a 243. Avilez had a 223 total pinfall, followed by Hall’s 212.

Aggie bowling will enter bracket play on Sunday in best-of-seven Baker matches.

NEW ORLEANS — The Xavier University of Louisiana Rowing Club, which launched in September 2023 in a partnership with New Orleans Rowing Club (NORC), is thrilled to announce that XULA rowing is being elevated to varsity status for the 2025-26 academic year. This milestone breaks barriers as the first-ever varsity-level rowing program for men and women at a Historically Black College and University (HBCU), bringing equality and access to the sport at the collegiate level.

NORC members Elizabeth Manley, Ph.D., professor of history and chair of Xavier’s history department, and Chloé Jobin, the club’s head of community outreach and diversity initiatives, lead the fast-growing sport at the HBCU.

Since its formation, the club has immediately attracted attention nationally from leaders in the rowing community. It has also earned sponsorships and donations from the sport’s national governing body, USRowing, Mr. Cooper’s A Most Beautiful Thing Inclusion Fund, and other major players in the sport, including Vespoli USA, JL Athletics and Concept2.

In a joint statement, Dr. Manley and Ms. Jobin said: “We could not be prouder to work with Xavier Rowing as we launch this historic debut as an official varsity sport. The passion and dedication of our athletes, combined with the support from esteemed national figures including Olympic rower David Banks, former Division I coach Kevin Harris, rowing luminary Arshay Cooper, and Brannon Johnson of BLJ Rowing, who have all visited to inspire and coach our students, truly exemplifies the spirit of Xavier. Launching this team of athletes onto the competitive national stage is not just about rowing — it’s about building a community, inspiring our students, and creating opportunities for growth both on and off the water.”

“The Xavier Rowing Club has offered me the opportunity to find a family outside of my Xavier family and get involved in a sport that allows me to be part of a team and also work on my own individual goals. . . [and] it allows us to shatter negative stereotypes and false perceptions,” said rower and junior political science major Kamryn Days.

Olympic rower David Banks said: “It’s truly impressive that the push to start the first co-ed HBCU varsity program was initiated internally by the Xavier students, staff, and faculty. It’s another testament to the outstanding students at Xavier; in that they seek out new challenges and opportunities and strive for excellence in whatever they do. It’s not easy being the first few to do something that may seem so very different and even daunting. But I’m confident and hopeful that these students will realize that this sport is theirs to make their own and that they will be an inspiration to many people to take their own new steps. I can’t wait.”

HBCU Xavier University of Louisiana rowing

Arshay Cooper said: “For so many young people in our rowing community, Xavier has the potential to enhance their lives both academically and athletically and to provide an opportunity that has not existed before now. Excitement for the program has been building around the country as young men and women are realizing that they may soon be able to fulfill their dreams of attending an HBCU and rowing in college.”

Brannon Johnson, founder of the sport’s first black-owned and operated club, said: “Rowing can be a vehicle to a better life. It certainly was for me. But rowing can also be a vehicle for change. Xavier, like so many other HBCUs, is steeped in the rich tradition of creating change for its students. Xavier’s rowing team is a wonderful example of what that looks like now, and it’s vital that we lean in and support this program and the students at its center.”

Said Pat Kendrick, Xavier University of Louisiana’s executive director of athletics and recreation: “This is an exciting time for Xavier Athletics in welcoming the rowing team to our family. We are so proud of each and every one of these athletes and look forward to seeing them excel in their sport and bring the spirit of Xavier to the water and beyond.”

LUBBOCK, Texas – The HBCU men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams from North Carolina A&T saw a school record fall on Day One of the 2025 Corky Classic at Texas Tech University’s Sports Performance Center.

Junior Jason Holmes has officially won all three of his 60-meter hurdles finals this season and now holds the North Carolina A&T 60H program record. Nine months earlier, Holmes broke the record at the HBCU in the 110H at Penn Relays by running a 13.43.

Championing the final at the Corky Classic, Holmes marked a personal best of 7.54 to topple the old Aggies record of 7.55, held by Leonard Mustari from the Tiger Paw Invite at Clemson University on Feb. 12, 2022.

On Tuesday, Holmes was honored as the Coastal Athletic Conference (CAA) men’s track athlete of the week – making it the second time he received the award this season after competing in only two previous meets. His recent run currently ranks him as the No. 2 runner in the country, behind Johnny Brackins (7.49) from the University of California (rankings are updated after weekend competitions are completed).

Joining Holmes in the hurdles, sophomore Isaiah Taylor crossed second in Heat 1 of the semifinals and finished with a personal record of 7.74. He placed fifth overall after posting a 7.75 in the finals.

On the women’s side, senior Lucheyona Weaver also saw a good day in the 60H. In the semis, she placed first in the second heat while running a personal-record 8.11. In the finals, she finished fifth in 8.14. After moving to No. 9 on the NCAA Div I list this past week, her new PR could bump her back up to No. 5.

Senior Fajr Kelly took home a second-place title for the women in the 800m, coming in just behind Texas Christian University’s Tabitha Ngao, with a time of 2:09.8. And sophomore Serenity Brazell placed sixth in 2:15.16.

While competing in the 800m for the men, junior Dawson Grogan ran a personal-record 1:53.23 to shave one second off his indoor record of 1:54.3, and freshman Elijah Thomas followed up with a run of 1:54.35.

On Day Two of the Corky Classic, the Aggies will compete in 200m and several field events at the Texas Tech Sports Performance Center.

Kyrstin Johnson made a bold statement in her latest gymnastics performance, opening her floor routine with Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us.” The electrifying routine highlighted her powerful artistry and athleticism, setting the tone for her first season at Temple University. Johnson’s transfer comes after the closure of Talladega College’s gymnastics program, which marked a significant moment for HBCU gymnastics as a whole.

HBCU Gymnastics Legacy: From Fisk to Talladega

Fisk University holds the distinction of being the first HBCU to establish a gymnastics team, paving the way for increased representation in the sport. Talladega College followed as the second HBCU to sponsor a gymnastics program, providing opportunities for talented athletes like Johnson. However, Talladega’s program was recently shut down due to a lack of funding, underscoring the challenges HBCU athletic programs often face.

During her time at Talladega, Kyrstin Johnson excelled as a four-time First Team All-American and the 2023 USAG National Vault Champion. Her accomplishments cemented her status as one of the top gymnasts in collegiate competition and showcased the level of talent developed within HBCU programs.

Thriving at Temple University

At Temple, Johnson has brought the same determination that made her a star at Talladega. Her recent floor routine, paired with Kendrick Lamar’s anthem “Not Like Us”, captivated audiences online and demonstrated her ability to perform at the highest level. Now majoring in Biology, she balances academic rigor with her athletic career, embodying the values of perseverance and excellence.

Honoring and Advancing HBCU Gymnastics

The loss of Talladega’s gymnastics program is a blow to HBCU athletics, but athletes like Johnson continue to carry the legacy forward. By thriving at Temple, she ensures that the contributions of HBCU gymnastics programs remain recognized and celebrated.

Kristin Johnson’s journey highlights the significance of supporting and expanding gymnastics at HBCUs. Through her performances, she honors her roots while paving the way for future generations of Black gymnasts. Her story is a testament to the resilience of HBCU athletes and the lasting impact they have on the sport.

HAMPTON, Va. – The NCAA Division I Committee on Infractions has approved a Negotiated Resolution Agreement with Virginia-based HBCU Hampton University following a collaborative investigation into academic certification errors. Rather than engage in an adversarial process, Hampton and the NCAA enforcement staff worked together to resolve the matter, resulting in strengthened support for the university’s academic certification process.

“From the moment these violations were discovered, Hampton took this investigation seriously,” said Hampton University President Darrell K. Williams. “I am proud of how we cooperated with the NCAA and reached a collaborative agreement. Hampton University will continue to operate with the highest ethical standards and absolute integrity.”

The investigation determined that some HBCU student-athletes competed while academically ineligible due to unintentional errors in the academic certification process. These errors occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic, a time of significant staffing turnover in key leadership positions responsible for academic certification. Once new leadership was in place and operations stabilized, Hampton promptly identified the infractions and took immediate steps to address them.

To prevent similar issues in the future, Hampton has invested in additional positions to strengthen its academic certification process and implemented comprehensive best practices to ensure continued compliance.

“Hampton University has instituted a robust certification model to ensure compliance moving forward,” said Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Anthony D. Henderson, Sr. “I am also pleased that our student-athletes and programs will continue to compete at the highest level, as no postseason bans, scholarship losses, or recruiting restrictions were imposed.”

This resolution highlights Hampton University’s proactive response, commitment to compliance, and dedication to maintaining its student-athlete’s academic and athletic success.

One year ago, HBCU graduate and Carolina Panthers cheerleader Brandi Hopson was pregnant. Today, she’s not only back on the sidelines of the NFL — she’s been selected to a huge honor.

The former WSSU cheerleader and current member of the TopCats Dance squad has been selected to represent the franchise in the Pro Bowl.

“Woke up in tears because I can’t believe this is real!” Hopson wrote on her Facebook page following the announcement. “So honored to have been selected as the Topcats 2025 Pro Bowl Cheerleader.”

The fact that Hopson is even back on the sidelines is amazing itself.

After spending her time at WSSU on the Powerhouse Cheer squad in the early 2010s, she tried out for the Carolina Panthers’ squad in 2015 but didn’t make it. She continued to work towards her goal, and in 2021 earned a spot on the TopCats team, balancing work and family with the demands of being on the squad.

This January, Hopson and her husband welcomed a son into the world prematurely. Both mother and baby recovered, and Hopson got back in the gym as the cheer and dance squad for the Carolina Panthers prepared for tryouts this spring. When the dust cleared, not only did she earn a spot on the squad again — she was named a captain.

This fall, Hopson’s worlds collided as the TopCats paid a visit to her HBCU, showing up to Bowman Gray Stadium to perform at halftime of the WSSU-Shaw game.

“It was a full-circle moment,” Hopson told HBCU Gameday after the performance. “Just happy to have both my families at my home — Winston-Salem State University — it’s’ the best feeling ever.”

Last week, Hopson got the chance to do it again — this time in Bank of America Stadium as the WSSU Powerhouse performed with the NFL squad once more.

“Sometimes I wonder what I’m doing,” Hopson said on her quick snap back into the life of an NFL cheerleader while balancing being a mother, a wife and an employee. “But it’s my passion, so I’m happy to be here.”

Now she’s headed to the Pro Bowl!

As a former HBCU football player, I remember every single coach that coached me. While my head coaches at FAMU were Rudy Hubbard and Ken Riley, I remember every single assistant coach. In fact, we would come in more contact with an assistant than the head coach. That is the way it is supposed to be. There were 8-10 assistants, thus their impact was greater.

I was blessed to have one of the best special team coaches in FAMU history and I would argue with the number of all-conference and All-Americans under his tutelage, Anthony “Tony” Messina was one of the best-ever in HBCU football. He was passionate, coached with precision and cared about us as people.

On Thursdays before each game, we would forego our meals on campus and he would take the specialists out for pizza. Those conversations lasted for hours. He wanted to know how we were doing in school, how our families were doing, and most importantly how we were doing mentally. It wasn’t just about football, but how we were progressing and coping in life.

HBCU
Former NCA&T coach Rod Broadway

Walter Highsmith is one coach who is still loved by his players

My defensive coordinator was Walter Highsmith. He is one of the biggest characters ever in HBCU sports. He had a larger-than-life personality and one of the top-ranked defenses in the country. He knew how to get the best out of us and demanded it at all times. He was also known to play spades with us on long bus trips. He and assistant defensive coordinator Rick Kravitz would enter our worlds on those long bus rides and in those moments reaffirm to us that they were one of us. However, we knew when they put on the coach hat that they were to be respected as such.

They were hard on us when they needed to be. They knew when to pull back if our mental was at a breaking point. We could go to them for advice on anything. Whether it was an issue at home, an issue with a girlfriend, or coping in class, these wise coaches never steered us wrong. This is why so many college student-athletes look back at their coaches as father and mother figures.

While everyone doesn’t have the platform of Coach Prime or Dawn Staley, there are coaches up and down the HBCU realm who are being that father figure that these robust but fragile athletes need. College football players are taught and raised to be rough on the football field. However, underneath those pads and helmets are young black men trying to find their way in a society that is not necessarily geared toward their natural being.

Vanessa Blair-Lewis personified leadership in HBCU women’s basketball

Former Bethune-Cookman women’s basketball coach Vanessa Blair-Lewis comes to mind as one who fits this description. She was tough as a coach and got results from the Lady Wildcats winning MEAC championships. However, she was also known to care deeply for her student-athletes and had a sensational graduation rate.

Vanessa Blair-Lewis HBCU

Corporate America bans many of the creative hair designs that are popular with young black men. The use of slang words in a public setting often puts a young black male in a position to be categorized. It’s no secret that it is tougher for HBCU grads to prosper in the general society because of the image placed on its cultural traits. Visible tattoos, which are very common, are not always a plus for a young student-athlete heading into the world.

Riley was a stickler for education. He was pushing his entire time coaching at FAMU for someone to follow in his footsteps as a Rhodes Scholar candidate. He had several All-Americans and sent players off to the NFL, but there is no doubt in my mind that if one of us had been able to attain that Rhodes Scholar recognition, he would have regarded it as his greatest achievement as a coach.

When student-athletes are away from home, they need someone they can respect for advice. They also know that they need someone to tell them the truth about things, not just be a listening board as friends often are. Coaches shoot straight and it draws the student-athletes closer when they can get a real analysis of a situation from someone who has been there.

Pam Oliver remembers her coach giving her great life advice

Fox Sports sideline reporter Pam Oliver once spoke of the impact of her track & field coach at FAMU, Bobby Lang. “Coach Lang did not like my boyfriend at all…in the end, he was correct, he was correct that my boyfriend at the time was not the best,” she said. While that fatherly judgment had nothing to do with Oliver’s record-setting career on the track at FAMU, it did help her along in her life’s journey. It was so impactful that she has never forgotten it.

Former FAMU special teams coach Anthony “Tony” Messina

Some coaches that come to mind as those great mentors were Eddie Robinson, Jake Gaither, Pete Richardson, Rod Broadway, Bill Hayes, Larry Little and so many more. The job of father or mother figure comes with the title of coach. Nowhere is that more important than in our illustrious HBCUs.

Savannah, Georgia-Savannah State University Athletics has announced the hiring of Florentino “Tino” Burgos as the new head coach of the Tigers’ HBCU baseball program.

Burgos comes to “ The Marsh” with a wealth of experience as a head coach, with his most recent post coming at Florida Memorial University, where he spent eight seasons, leading the Lions to their most successful era of baseball in program history. “Becoming the head baseball coach at Savannah State University is more than an opportunity, it’s a calling to lead, inspire, and elevate young men both on and off the field,” remarked Coach Burgos. “Together, we will build a culture of excellence, resilience, and pride that represents the very best of Tiger Nation.”

During Burgos’ tenure at the Miami Gardens, Florida-based HBCU, the FMU baseball program developed into one of the best baseball teams among Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and grew to be a highly competitive program in The Sun Conference, often referred to be the toughest baseball conference in the NAIA.
In 2023, Burgos won the Black College World Series championship, defeating fellow SIAC school Albany State 5-4 in the title game.

“We are excited to have someone of the caliber of Tino Burgos to lead our baseball program,” remarked SSU Director of Athletics Opio Mashariki. “Our search for a new coach required us to do a deep dive to find someone who will continue the success of the program, and I am confident that we have found that person in Coach Burgos.”
Burgos takes over a Savannah State team that finished 2024 with an impressive 31-17 overall record and represented the SIAC at the 2024 NCAA Division II Baseball Tournament.

In addition to the many FMU players selected for the Sun Conferences’ All-Conference Team since 2018, more than 10 FMU players have received the Sun Conferences’ All-Academic Team honors each year, demonstrating the culture of academic excellence that Burgos has established.
In 2019, FMU Baseball achieved a No. 1 ranking in the Black College Nines National HBCU Baseball Poll for the first time in their history and Burgos was named HBCU Coach of the Year by Black College Nines. That year, FMU finished the season tied for third in the Sun Conference and reached the Sun Conference Tournament for the first time in over 15 years.

The Florida A&M (FAMU) Lady Rattlers, fresh off their third SWAC volleyball championship in four years in the league, were selected to travel to Nebraska to face the Cornhuskers in the first round of the 2024 NCAA Tournament. FAMU, coming in at 27-6 and a perfect 16-0 in conference play, swept three games in the SWAC Championship en route to receiving the HBCU conference’s automatic bid for the championship tournament.

The Lady Rattlers gathered in the FAMU Senate chambers to watch the NCAA Selection Show and were featured on a live feed of the show.

In several past years, the Lady Rattlers had participated in first round tournament in Gainesville, at the University of Florida. With the Gators nor Miami Hurricanes being ranked high enough to host, the Rattlers were forced to travel cross country.

“We knew we would hit one of the top seeds and none of the teams in the south were selected to host and ironically, FSU (Florida State) and us are going to the same regional,” said FAMU head volleyball coach Gokhan Yilmas. “We’re excited to play, that’s why we play the season. We want to be in the NCAA Tournament and it’s going to be a fun match.”

The Nebraska Cornhuskers tout one of the best volleyball programs, facilities and fanbases in the entire country. The Rattlers and Cornhuskers have only faced once, with the arguably FAMU’s best volleyball team ever defeating the Cornhuskers 3-1 in a historic victory for the HBCU. At the time, 20 years ago, Nebraska was the No.2 ranked team in the country and the game was in front of a sellout crowd of over 4,100 fans.

FAMU All-SWAC outside hitter Brooke Lynn Watts is excited to be returning to the NCAA tournament for her second time. “We’re all super excited. This is my second tournament. I don’t think anybody on the team has been to Nebraska, so the atmosphere is going to be great. It’s going to be really loud and something we’ll have to adjust to early. But, I think we’re ready for it and this team is really fun to play with,” Watts said.

Senior middle hitter Isis Williams is appearing in her third NCAA Regional. “I think the kind of team we have with a big senior class..they will be leaning on us. I’m super, super excited to see al the people are that are going to be there and the overall vibe of the place is going to be amazing,” Williams concluded.

The HBCU champion Rattlers will face Nebraska on Friday at approximately 8:00 PM EST.

HBCU Wrestling and Delaware State University (DSU) have announced a landmark partnership, launching the first-ever Division I women’s wrestling program at an HBCU, made possible by a $1.25 million donation from HBCU Wrestling. This historic program will expand opportunities for women athletes at DSU and set a standard for representation in collegiate sports.

“This partnership gives our women student-athletes a platform to compete, grow, and inspire,” said Dr. Alecia Shields-Gadson, Delaware State University Director of Athletics. “We are thrilled for the impact this program will have.”

DSU is currently searching for a head coach, with the women’s wrestling season set to begin in 2025-26.

Founded in 2021, HBCU Wrestling has been committed to bringing wrestling back to HBCUs, starting with a $2.7 million gift to Morgan State University that revitalized its wrestling program. DSU’s new women’s team marks another step in its mission to create opportunities for Black athletes.

Earlier last year, HBCU Wrestling hosted a wrestling clinic at DSU, led by Olympic medalist Toccara Montgomery, which sparked enthusiasm among participants and the university’s athletic community. Seeing the excitement around that clinic, Montgomery, the first Black woman to win a World Championship for the U.S. in wrestling, expressed pride in DSU’s new program.

“Seeing DSU launch the first-ever Division I women’s wrestling team at an HBCU is monumental,” Montgomery said. “This program will inspire young women of color to chase their dreams and know they belong.”

With a legacy of wrestling dating back decades, Delaware State University was the last HBCU with a Division I wrestling program until it was discontinued in 2009. Now with more support DSU is reviving its program with a commitment to gender equity and Title IX standards, creating a sustainable platform for young women athletes to excel.

“This announcement isn’t just about wrestling—it’s about creating life-changing opportunities,” said Jahi Jones, Executive Director of HBCU Wrestling. “We are building a foundation where young women feel seen, valued, and loved while achieving their athletic dreams.”

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. –– Florida A&M University (FAMU) Athletics is pleased to announce a $115,000 gift from Tola Thompson to establish The George & Alice Thompson endowed scholarship, designed to make a major, ever-lasting, positive impact on FAMU Athletics and the student-athlete experience.

The endowed scholarship honors Thompson’s parents, George “Godfather” and Alice Thompson, who were both deeply involved with FAMU Athletics. George Thompson, known affectionately as the “Godfather,” served the department for 49 years as the athletic trainer and equipment manager. His legacy is memorialized in the football locker room, which bears his name.

Alice Thompson, who passed away in 2018, played a pivotal role in supporting student-athletes in the late 80s as a tutor and was the president of FAMU Athletics’ first all-female booster club, “The Tight Ends Club.”

“FAMU, and FAMU Athletics means a great deal to our family,” said Thompson. “FAMU has given so much to my family. My parents, my brother, my sister, and I all got a great education here. I count it a big honor for me to be able to give back in such a small way. This endowed scholarship is just one way I can say thank you.”

“I’m excited about our athletic program and can’t wait to see how future Rattlers will make their mark on our legacy,” Thompson added.

“On behalf of FAMU Athletics, I extend our heartfelt thanks to Tola for his generosity and support of our athletics program. This level of commitment exemplifies the immense pride our alumni have in our program,” said Vice President and Director of Athletics Angela Suggs. “We are proud to have this fully endowed athletics scholarship, and we hope it will be one of many to come. This gift will undoubtedly inspire future generations of Rattlers to achieve greatness and uphold the proud tradition of excellence at FAMU,” Suggs added.

The interest from the endowment will cover the full tuition of one FAMU student-athlete each year and help to ensure that they have the resources they need to succeed both on the field and in their future endeavors.

Alcorn State University, an HBCU located in Lorman, MS has had its women’s soccer season canceled and is facing accusations of possible Title IX violations.

The Clarion Ledger reports that the HBCU doesn’t have enough players to field a team.

“Our previous interim head coach left the university, and we had a short period of time to recruit additional players after the new soccer coach arrived,” Alcorn State interim vice president of marketing and communication Maxine Greenleaf said in an email to the Clarion Ledger.

Ken Kabiru was hired as the Alcorn State University Soccer coach on July 22.

Unfortunately, that’s not the worst of the news.

Alcorn State, HBCU
Jaylin Ward, the preseason SWAC Defensive Player of The Year, will not get to play this season.

Key issues include inadequate facilities—such as showers with bats and snakes, and the absence of hot water—as well as unfulfilled promises of soccer equipment like cleats. The training room was reportedly understaffed and poorly equipped, with unqualified students performing medical treatments.

These allegations came to light in a letter signed by 15 current and former players at the HBCU. Additionally, the head coach, Ken Kabiru, who was hired just before the season, has a history of legal troubles that further complicate the situation.

The SWAC says it is aware of the current status of the Alcorn State program.

“The Southwestern Athletic Conference has been formally notified that Alcorn State University will cancel the 2024 Women’s Soccer season,” the SWAC wrote. “Alcorn State University has been sanctioned in accordance with the SWAC Constitution, Bylaws and Sports Regulations. We look forward to the return of Alcorn State Lady Braves Soccer as one of ten participating member institutions in the sport of Women’s Soccer within the Southwestern Athletic Conference.”

The program has won just 39 games since the HBCU established it back in 2003.

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – HBCU West Virginia State University (WVSU) has been awarded $250,000 by the Kanawha County Commission to help build a new track and field complex at the university. The funding comes from American Rescue Plan (ARP) funds and was approved by the commission at its Wednesday meeting.

“We are grateful to the Kanawha County Commission for their support to build a track and field complex at West Virginia State University,” said WVSU President Ericke S. Cage. “This new facility will not only be a tremendous asset for our university and our student-athletes, but for the entire Kanawha County community giving local middle school and high school students an opportunity to also practice and train here. Since relaunching our track and field programs we have been actively working to raise the funds necessary to build a facility on our campus and this commitment from the Kanawha County Commission is a tremendous boost to that work.”

WVSU brought back its men’s and women’s track and field teams last year. Since their return, the teams have been practicing at off-campus facilities in the Kanawha Valley.

“This is another remarkable display of the commission’s dedication to not only supporting our student-athletes at West Virginia State University but all the youth in Kanawha County,” said WVSU Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Nate Burton. “This new facility will provide championship caliber resources for our track and field student-athletes, while also supplying an additional track that the community can use. Similar to the way all of our athletic facilities are used, we envision high schools, middle schools, and area youth organizations using the facility to train and host meets.”

In addition to being the future home of Yellow Jackets track and field, once completed the facility could also help to recruit larger track and field events to the region, Burton said, similar to the large events that the nearby Shawnee Sports Complex has been able to attract.

The HBCU track will also be open to area residents to come and walk and run when not in use.

Fundraising for the construction of the new track and field complex is ongoing. For those interested in giving, donations may be made online at https://connect.wvstateu.edu/foundation/athletics.

Tennessee State University (TSU), a leader in the HBCU community, is facing a significant financial challenge as it prepares to launch the first Division I men’s ice hockey program. According to a report by Meredith Turits of Front Office Sports, the program’s future is at risk due to pressing financial concerns that demand immediate attention to ensure its success.

Set to debut in the 2025-2026 season, the Tigers’ ice hockey team represents a groundbreaking moment in HBCU athletic history as the first ever ice hockey team for HBCUs. In April, the university made history by appointing Dominique Abercrombie as the first Black head coach in NCAA Division I hockey. Despite this milestone, TSU is grappling with severe financial instability, largely attributed to budget mismanagement, as noted by Turits.

The university has been struggling with a range of issues, including a structural budget deficit and a staggering $2.1 billion in underfunding by the state over the past 30 years. Mismanagement of federal COVID-19 relief funds, poor scholarship offerings, declining enrollment, and outdated financial systems have further exacerbated the situation.

A feasibility study conducted by the NHL Industry Growth Fund highlighted the financial challenges of building a new athletic program. The Nashville Predators have stepped in to support the effort, offering the use of one of their Ford Ice Centers and other resources. However, apart from head coach Abercrombie’s salary, which is fully funded by TSU, many aspects of the program remain underfunded.

As the team prepares to travel to the Midwest and northern cities for games, the athletic department will need additional financial resources to cover travel, lodging, and logistical expenses. TSU has garnered the support of partners such as MKurtz Consulting and College Hockey Inc., but the program still faces a significant financial gap.

With an initial investment of nearly $2.5 million on the line, TSU must work diligently to build a competitive men’s ice hockey team capable of attracting sponsors and securing the long-term funding necessary for the program’s sustainability.

Hurricane Milton which roared to Category 5 status before making landfall as a Category 3 caused the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) to alter its weekend HBCU volleyball schedule. With Daytona Beach in the eye of probability as Milton is predicted to cross the state still at hurricane strength, the weekend’s slate of games have been moved to Florida A&M (FAMU). The Lawson Center will host all SWAC games in the state of Florida.

Alcorn State and Southern University are the competitors for this weekend. The Wildcats arrived in Tallahassee on Tuesday to play the Rattlers in a regularly scheduled match and then remain in Tallahassee at least through Monday.

The Rattlers defeated the Wildcats 3-0 today and will now accommodate their HBCU arch-rivals as the low-lying Daytona Beach is susceptible to flooding and the rotation of Hurricane Milton is expected to dump both rain and storm surge onto the eastern coast of Florida.

Hurricane Milton HBCU FAMU

Three days on the job, FAMU Vice President and Director of Athletics, Angela Suggs, announced the schedule change at the Eddie Jackson 220 Quarterback Club today.

“We’re playing (Bethune) Cookman tonight and they’ll be with us until Monday.” Suggs said. “Alcorn and Southern were the switch teams for Sunday and Monday. Southern would have come to us on Sunday and Alcorn here on Monday. As opposed to them traveling down to Daytona, we’re going to host all those teams.”

She went on to say that the SWAC was involved in making the accommodations for the switch in venue as well as the FAMU Athletics Department and FAMU Administration.

“That’s family and it’s all about safety, SWAC love and SWAC support. It going to be like a big old tournament. We’ll have three SWAC sister institutions with us. Support is important. For our visiting schools even to see orange and green in the stands, especially for our young ladies is important. Bethune-Cookman was especially appreciative of us and we just want to do our part,” she concluded.

We look forward to welcoming athletes and fans nationwide to enjoy our outstanding facilities and warm hospitality. We truly value the collaboration with UNF and Visit Jacksonville to make this dream a reality. I take immense pride in representing the NCAA Division II membership on this stage and look forward to providing these student-athletes with a world-class experience.”

The championships are anticipated to yield numerous benefits for Edward Waters University, including:

 • Increased national visibility for the institution
 • Enhanced recruitment opportunities for both athletes and non-athletes
 • Improved campus facilities to meet NCAA standards
 • Strengthened partnerships with local businesses and organizations
 • Economic benefits for the surrounding community

“These events will serve as a catalyst for our ongoing growth and development,” Dr. Faison added. “They exemplify our commitment to excellence in all aspects of university life and will inspire our students, faculty, and staff to achieve new heights. As we prepare to welcome the nation’s top Division II athletes, we are also ready to present Edward Waters University as a rising star in higher education.”

By successfully hosting these championships, Edward Waters University aims to solidify its position as a leader among HBCU and Division II institutions, further advancing its mission of emerging prominence in both academic and athletic spheres.

BALTIMORE – Coppin State head baseball coach Sherman Reed has announced that Wayne Franklin, a former MLB pitcher for seven seasons, has been hired as the pitching coach at the Baltimore HBCU.

“We were fortunate to land a pitching coach of the caliber of Coach Franklin,” said Reed who is entering his 15th season at the helm of the CSU program. “The guys play this game in hopes of reaching the Big Leagues someday. Under the tutelage of a former Major League Baseball pitcher, the guys are getting instruction at the highest end. They have done a great job putting on the breaks of the past and buying into Coach Franklin’s pitching philosophy. I am excited to see what the future holds for our young and talented pitching staff.”

In Franklin’s own opinion, his entire Major League career has prepared him for this moment – to come back to his home state of Maryland as a college coach, and it will be at an HBCU for the upcoming season.

Born in Wilmington, Del., yet raised in North East, Maryland, Franklin was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 1996 MLB Draft out of the University of Maryland and was picked up by the Houston Astros in the 1999 Rule Five Draft. Franklin made his big league debut with the Astros in 2000, forcing Hall of Famer Ken Griffey, Jr., the first batter he faced, to ground out.

Franklin spent his first three seasons with the Astros as a reliever before the Milwaukee Brewers converted him into a starter. He ended the 2002 season with a 2-1 record while recording a 2.62 ERA for the Brewers before winning ten games the following season, striking out a career-high 116 batters.

HBCU MLB

Over his professional career in Major League Baseball, Franklin was a teammate of several all-time great hitters, including Barry Bonds, Alex Rodriguez, Derek Jeter, Jeff Bagwell, Chipper Jones, Andruw Jones, Jason Giambi, Robinson Cano, Bernie Williams, Craig Biggio and Jorge Posada, and on the same pitching staffs as Mariano Rivera, Randy Johnson, Mike Mussina, John Smoltz, Tim Hudson, Kevin Brown and Billy Wagner.

A person whom Wayne attributes greatly to his knowledge of baseball is the late author and sports psychologist, H.A. Dorfman. Franklin says that Dorfman’s contributions to the mental game of baseball will never be quantified.

Following his MLB career, Franklin played three years at the International and Independent League levels before starting his collegiate coaching career at San Francisco State, then as the manager of the San Diego Jets, a Collegiate summer league team in 2019. That summer, he led the Jets to a League Championship. In 2021, he managed the Lake Mills 94’s of the Dairyland Collegiate League, losing in the league championship.

Franklin has also spent time in recent years as a pitching coach at Menlo College and Holy Names University.

Anna Cockrell didn’t go to an HBCU, but the Charlotte, NC native and Olympic Silver Medalist has strong ties to Johnson C Smith University (JCSU), her hometown HBCU. Cockrell was spotted on campus talking with the JCSU track team less than 60 days after winning silver in the 400m at the Paris Olympics.

Anna Cockrell is the daughter of Kieth Cockrell, the vice chair of the board of trustees for Johnson C. Smith University, and had a hall of fame high school track career in Charlotte at Providence Day under current Johnson C Smith University track coach Carol Lawrence.

Johnson C. Smith University’s social media accounts were ablaze with images and video of the Olympian’s visit taken by JCSU biology major Jay Smarr. Cockrell met with the team at the school’s track and football field, the Irwin Belk Complex. Wearing an official Team USA jacket and sporting her Olympic silver medal, the 2021 NCAA champion in the 100m hurdles and 400m hurdles spoke to the team about the sacrifices she made during her collegiate career that ultimately led to her Olympic success.

“Nothing was going to stop me from what I had to do like that’s really how I felt,” Cockrell says in the video. “I mean Coach Lawerence knows this, I’ve sacrificed a lot,” she tells the HBCU track squad. ” I was in LA for college, then I left LA to move to Texas when I went pro, my coach took a job at Arkansas, and the last thing I wanted to do was move to Arkansas.”

Those sacrifices helped her go from NCAA National Champion to the women’s 400m hurdle final at the Tokyo Olympics and eventually become an Olympic Silver Medalist in Paris in the summer of 2024.

The Irwin Belk Complex at Johnson C Smith University features an Olympic-sized track and has been the site of several major track and field events including the US Paralympic Track and Field trials and the AAU Summer Games. Positioned just beneath the skyline of the city of Charlotte it had to imagine Cockrell didn’t run a race or two on the HBCU track during her 6-time All-American high school career.

Cockrell ranks No. 1 all-time in North Carolina history in three events: 100m hurdles (13.17), 300m hurdles (40.42), and the 400m hurdles (55.20). She was a 16-time NCISAA state champion in the 100m (2013-16), 200m (2016), 100m hurdles (2013-16), 300m hurdles (2013-16), 4x100m (2013) and 4x400m (2014-15) and was a 2-time World Junior Champion in the 400m hurdles and 4x400m relay as a high school senior and the Pan Am Champion in the 400m hurdles as a junior.

The Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA), the nation’s oldest wrestling conference, has officially added Morgan State as its newest member. With this move, Morgan State becomes the 12th member of the EIWA and the only HBCU with a Division I wrestling program.

Gene Nighman, the EIWA Executive Director, welcomed Morgan State with open arms: “We are proud to have Morgan State as part of our conference. The EIWA has a long history of advancing wrestling, and having the first HBCU program join us is a significant milestone. We look forward to seeing them compete in our 121st season and at the 2025 EIWA Championship at Lehigh University.”

HBCU Morgan State EIWA wrestling

For Morgan State, this is a big step forward. Dena Freeman-Patton, the school’s Director of Athletics, expressed her excitement: “Joining the EIWA is a perfect fit for our wrestling program. Our student-athletes are ready to compete at a high level and continue their success in the classroom and on the mat.”

Morgan State’s wrestling program has a rich history. After a 24-year hiatus, the program was revived in 2021 with a $2.7 million gift, the largest in school history. This donation was led by Mike Novogratz and the HBCU Wrestling Initiative, which aims to bring wrestling back to HBCUs. Morgan State, which first dominated the sport in the 1950s and ’60s, is now the only HBCU in Division I wrestling.

Kenny Monday, hired as head coach in 2022, has brought a wealth of experience to the program. A three-time NCAA All-American and Olympic gold medalist, Monday sees this EIWA membership as a turning point. “This is a monumental milestone for our program,” Monday said. “We’re excited to elevate our competition and make an impact in collegiate wrestling.”

The Bears will debut their talents at the Blue vs. Orange intrasquad dual on October 18, with their first EIWA match at Lehigh on November 15.

With this historic move, Morgan State is set to make waves in the wrestling world, continuing to build on its proud legacy as an HBCU.

Tamia Casey, a proud alumna of Lincoln University and former cheerleader for the FeFe’s, has transitioned from HBCU cheerleading to the big stage of the NFL where she has started her sixth season as a cheerleader for the Philadelphia Eagles. Her journey, from cheering on the sidelines at HBCU football games to performing on an NFL field, showcases her dedication, resilience, and passion for the sport.

Casey cheered for the FeFe’s at Lincoln University from 2015 to 2019, where she became a standout performer and served as the 45th Miss Lincoln University of Pennsylvania during the 2018-2019 academic year, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in biochemistry and molecular biology.

The FeFe’s, known for their energetic routines and strong connection to Lincoln’s legacy, helped shape Casey into the athlete and performer she is today. “They are some of the best times, some of the toughest times, but in the end, it made me a stronger athlete, stronger woman, and stronger performer,” Casey said about her time with the team in an interview with HBCU Gameday in January.

After graduating, Casey set her sights on the professional stage. Her hard work and passion led her to audition for an NFL cheerleading squad, where she successfully earned a spot, bringing her talent from HBCU football fields to the NFL’s national platform every Sunday.

Outside of cheerleading, Casey remains deeply involved in her community. As a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, she helps high school seniors with the college admissions process and organizes an annual 5K scholarship run to support aspiring students. She also volunteers at an All-Abilities cheer clinic, welcoming children of all abilities and making sure they feel included.

In 2019, Tamia joined the Philadelphia Eagles organization and thousands of others from the community to ride, run, or walk in the Eagles Autism Challenge. This event was dedicated to raising funds for research and programs to address the complex issues presented by the condition of autism. All participant-raised funds b went directly towards autism research and/or programs at beneficiary partners.

Tamia Casey’s story highlights the impact of HBCU experiences and the opportunities they provide. From her time at Lincoln University to her current role with the NFL, Casey’s journey exemplifies the values, skills, and strength that HBCU programs instill in their athletes.

BALTIMORE, Md. – Morgan State University is deeply saddened by the loss of George Rhoden, an HBCU Olympian and former track and field legend who passed away on August 24, 2024, at the age of 97. Rhoden, a native of Jamaica, attended Morgan State (1950-52) where he excelled in track and field. He was hailed by many as the best quarter-miler to have ever represented Jamaica.

In 1952, Rhoden represented Jamaica at the Olympic Games in Helsinki, Finland, where he won a gold medal in the 400-meter race and was a member of the Golden Quartet that won the 4x400m. a silver medal in the 800-meter race. He became the first Jamaican to win an Olympic gold medal in track and field and was hailed as a national hero.

Born on December 13, 1926, in Kingston, Jamaica, Rhoden’s journey to Olympic greatness began in the late 1940s, when he emerged as one of the leading long sprinters of his era. Alongside his compatriots Arthur Wint and Herb McKenley, Rhoden helped establish Jamaica as a dominant force in athletics during the post-war period.

Rhoden first competed in the 1948 London Olympics, where he participated in the 100m and 400m events. Although he did not secure a medal in London, it was a precursor to the greatness that would follow. Rhoden and his teammates were expected to perform strongly in the 4x400m relay, but a muscle injury to Wint during the final dashed their hopes of a medal.

Rhoden continued to emerge in the world of track & field. On August 22, 1950, he shattered the world record in the 400m, setting an astonishing time of 45.8 seconds in Eskilstuna, Sweden. His dominance in the 400m was further cemented by his victories in the AAU championships from 1949 to 1951 and the NCAA championships while at HBCU Morgan State University, where he claimed titles in the 220-yard (200m) and 440-yard (400m) events.

At the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki, Rhoden’s athletic prowess soared to new heights. As a pre-race favorite in the 400m, Rhoden’s every stride was fueled by anticipation. In a race that kept spectators on the edge of their seats, Rhoden emerged victorious, narrowly edging out his close friend and fellow Jamaican, Herb McKenley, to claim the gold medal. But Rhoden’s Olympic glory did not end there. As the anchor leg of Jamaica’s 4x400m relay team, he led his team to victory, securing a second gold medal and setting a new world record of 3:03.9. This victory was especially sweet, as it came against the United States, the country where Rhoden had made his home after moving to San Francisco.

Rhoden’s legacy is one of perseverance, excellence, and national pride. His achievements paved the way for future generations of HBCU and Jamaican athletes, setting a standard of excellence that continues to inspire.

As the last surviving member of that legendary 1952 relay team–comprising George Rhoden, Herb McKenley, Arthur Wint, and Les Laing–his passing marks the end of an era for Jamaican athletics. Rhoden’s contributions to the sport, both on and off the track, will be remembered as a cornerstone of Jamaica’s rich sporting heritage.

George Rhoden is survived by his family, friends, and a grateful nation that will forever honor his contributions to Jamaica’s sporting legacy.

In addition to his athletic achievements, Rhoden was a dedicated HBCU educator and mentor. He taught physical education and coached track and field at Howard University and the University of the District of Columbia. He also served as the president of the Jamaican Amateur Athletic Association and was a member of the International Olympic Committee.

Rhoden’s legacy will continue to inspire generations of student-athletes and track and field enthusiasts. He will be remembered as a true pioneer and a champion who represented Morgan State University with pride and distinction.

Johnnie Barnes
Football

The most prolific receiver in Hampton history, Johnnie Barnes went on to play four seasons in the NFL with the San Diego Chargers and Pittsburgh Steelers. Barnes played with the Pirates from 1988-91 and finished as Hampton’s all-time leading receiver with 3,090 yards. He was the team’s leading receiver in each of his four HBCU football seasons (1988: 941 yards, 1989: 584 yards, 1990: 621 yards, 1991: 924 yards). He had 219 receiving yards vs. Livingstone in 1988, the third most in school annals, and had 176 receiving yards against Virginia State, 10th most in Hampton history. A four-year letterman, he was named All-CIAA three times. Barnes was a seventh-round draft choice by the Chargers in 1982 and played three seasons with the Chargers before finishing his NFL career with the Steelers. A standout track athlete, Barnes also earned Indoor All-America honors in 1988-89, 1989-90, and 1990-91 in the 400m dash and outdoor recognition in 1989, 1990, and 1991 in the 400m dash as well as the 400m hurdles in 1991.

Bruce Foxworth
Men’s Tennis

A four-year HBCU letterman from 1975-78, Bruce Foxworth teamed with Roger de Santis Guedes to win the 1976 NCAA Division II doubles championship. He played in the USTA (21 and under) circuit in 1976 and 1977. He won the National Amateur Clay Court Championship in 1977 and advanced to the semifinals of the singles competition at the 1977 NCAA Division II National Championships. He played at No. 2, helping Hampton win the 1976 NCAA Division II national championship. The Pirates advanced to the championship in 1978, finishing second. Foxworth finished his Hampton career with a 71-11 record in singles play and a 50-18 record in doubles action. During his career, he made the main draw at the French Open, Wimbledon, and U.S. Open. He passed away in 2021 after a two-year battle with prostate cancer. “Next to Arthur Ashe, I believe that Bruce Foxworth is the finest Black tennis player in America,” Dr. Robert Screen said.

Fred Freeman
Football

One of Hampton’s most successful football coaches, Fred Freeman spent two seasons as defensive coordinator for the Pirates (1981-83) before being elevated to the head coaching position, replacing Ed Wyche. He served as head coach from 1984-91 and his teams posted a 49-31-4 record in eight HBCU football seasons. Freemans’ 49 wins place him third on Hampton’s all-time wins list behind legendary Joe Taylor and Gideon Smith. His 1995 Pirate team finished with a 10-2 mark, won the CIAA crown, and advanced to the NCAA Playoffs. From 1987-89, Hampton compiled a 24-7-1 record including finishes of 9-3, 7-3, and 8-1-1. Freeman played his collegiate football at Mississippi State and was drafted by the New York Giants in the 1967 NFL Draft.

Francena McCorory
Women’s Track & Field

Francena McCorory won the gold medal in the 4x400m at both the 2012 and 2016 Summer Olympics and at two World Championships. She also took home the bronze in the 400m at the 2011 World Championships. “Francena is the greatest female track & field athlete to ever come out of the Hampton Roads Area,” said Coach Maurice Pierce. While attending HU, she won three national titles. Those included the 2009 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championship and both 400m titles in 2010 (both indoor and outdoor). When she crossed the finish line in the 400m at the 2010 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championship, McCorory set the NCAA and American record with a time of (50.54). She attended Bethel High School where she set a National High School Indoor Record in 2006 with a 400m time of 51.93. She was inducted into the MEAC Hall of Fame in 2017, and the Hampton Roads Sports Hall of Fame in 2023.

Edward Tomlin
Football

Edward Tomlin played football at Hampton from 1965-67. He led the team in scoring all three years (30 points in 1965, 66 points in 1966, and 67 points in 1967). Tomlin played under Coach Mel Labat and helped lead the Pirates to a 6-3 record in 1966. The Pirates were 11-15 during Tomlin’s career. A native of Ocala, Fla., Tomlin was a star HBCU halfback at
Howard High where he was also a standout baseball player. He was a 10th-round (270 overall) pick in the 1968 NFL draft by the Baltimore Colts but signed with the Montreal Alouettes after a bidding war between the Alouettes and Colts. He played for Montreal until an ankle injury sidelined his career. After his retirement, Tomlin became active in the civil rights movement. His son, Mike Tomlin, is the highly successful head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Tomlin passed away on Jan. 16, 2012.

Lifetime Achievement
Donovan Rose

Donovan Rose has worn many hats at Hampton since first arriving on campus in the fall of 1975. A former HBCU student-athlete, NFL player, football coach, and executive director of JET (Job Education Training) Corps, and the H.O.P.E. program (Hampton Opportunity Program for Enhancement), Rose currently serves as Assistant Director of Athletics for Event Management. Rose served as an assistant football coach and was head coach of the Pirates from 2009-13. The 1979 Hampton graduate was an All-CIAA performer and was named the league’s Defensive Player of the Year as a senior. He signed to play in the NFL with the Kansas City Chiefs in 1980, and also played for championship teams in the Canadian Football League, winning the Grey Cup with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 1984. In 1986, Rose joined the Miami Dolphins and led the team in interceptions, before retiring in 1988. In 2003, he was awarded the AFCA Assistant Coach of the Year in Division I-AA and the All-American Football Foundation Mike Campbell Top Assistant Coach Award.

Team of Distinction
1972 Hampton Baseball

Hampton’s 1972 baseball team was highly motivated and determined. They were a team on a mission. The reason was simple. They had been informed that the team would be disbanded at the end of the season. Playing with a chip on their shoulders, the Pirates would go out winners by capturing their first CIAA Championship in nearly half a century. The Pirates would finish the season with a 10-2 record in CIAA play. Hampton clinched the CIAA title by defeating Virginia State in Petersburg in the final game of the season. Among the highlights of the season was a 6-2 victory over Division I William & Mary. Bobby Martin was named CIAA Coach of the Year and outfielder David Neverson, second baseman Doug Palmer, and pitcher Al Barley earned All-CIAA honors in HBCU baseball.

North Carolina — Barber-Scotia College, a private HBCU in Concord, North Carolina is excited to announce its membership in the New South Athletic Conference (NSAC), unanimously approved by the Board of Trustees, during their June 2024 meeting. The inclusion of Barber-Scotia in the NSAC is expected to enrich the conference’s competitive landscape and provide new opportunities for student-athletes and the broader college community.

About Barber-Scotia

Established in 1867 as Scotia Seminary for African American women in Concord, North Carolina, the HBCU underwent several name changes and mergers before adopting its present name, Barber-Scotia College, in 1932. The charter was later amended in 1954 to admit students regardless of ethnicity or gender.

Barber-Scotia began as a female seminary in 1867. Scotia Seminary was founded by the Reverend Luke Dorland and chartered in 1870. A project by the Presbyterian Church to prepare young African American southern women (the daughters of former slaves) for careers as social workers and teachers, it was the coordinate women’s school for Biddle University (now Johnson C. Smith University).

It was the first female HBCU established after the American Civil War. The Charlotte Observer, in an interview with Janet Magaldi, president of the Piedmont Preservation Foundation, stated, “Scotia Seminary was one of the first black institutions built after the Civil War. For the first time, it gave black women an alternative to becoming domestic servants or field hands.”

HAMPTON, Va. — Hampton University graduates and former HBCU roommates Edose Ibadin and Chidi Okezie wrapped up competition for Nigeria in the Paris Olympic Games in early August.

“Our two former Pirates, Edose Ibadin and Chidi Okezie represented themselves, their family, their country, and the university well at the Paris Olympic Games,” said Hampton head coach Maurice Pierce. “Competing in the Olympic Games is our sport’s highest honor and we are very proud of them”.

Pierce coached both HBCU athletes during their time at Hampton. Ibadin competed in the men’s 800m race.

“What it meant to be able to compete at the Olympics is that my hard work has not only paid off but the people who have invested in me over the years got a huge return,” said Ibadin. “I may have been competing on the track individually but I was not alone. There have been so many people who have been a part of my journey and I couldn’t have done it without them.”

Ibadin continued, “This has been a dream come true and I know I’ll be able to carry this experience with me for the rest of my life. Who I have become on this journey to the Olympics will for sure help me in many other areas of my life.”

Okezie also ran for Nigeria in the mixed 4x400m, the men’s 400m, and the men’s 4x400m.

“It’s definitely a great experience,” said Okezie. “Being able to run on the track in multiple events, the 400m and the 4x400m relay. I didn’t get the results that I wanted, but the experience to get on the track and seeing my daughter watching me run was amazing. Watching her face light up after the race, couldn’t have asked for more.”

Okezie also explained that running on the track at the Paris Olympic Games was sensational. “Coming from the tunnel, hearing the crowd, 80,000 from the stands…it was like a dream come true.”
