Travis Scott delivered a high-octane performance at Coachella on April 12, 2025, marking one of the festival’s most anticipated moments. Joining him during his set were two iconic HBCU Bands, The Marching 100 from Florida A&M and the Sonic Boom of the South from Jackson State.

Taking the stage late Saturday night, the Houston rapper transformed the desert into his own Astroworld, complete with elaborate visuals, a towering stage setup, and a mosh-pit-ready crowd. Opening with “HYAENA” from his Utopia album, Scott wasted no time sending his fans into a frenzy.

The Marching 100 and Sonic Boom of the South performed an original arrangement of Travis Scott’s “4X4” for his Coachella intro. The record features a sample from Tennessee State University and the Aristocrat of Bands, and features The Marching Storm from Prairie View A&M in the music video. Both FAMU and Jackson State responded to Scott’s open invitation in February for an HBCU band to perform a horn arrangement for Coachella.

It was quite the day for the Marching 100, our Vaughn Wilson reports that the other half of the band was at Bragg Stadium on campus Saturday night performing with line dance king “Cupid.”

Back in the desert Scott blended fan favorites like “SICKO MODE,” “goosebumps,” and “Antidote” with newer tracks, including unreleased snippets that sent fans into a frenzy. Pyrotechnics, fire bursts, and surreal lighting elevated the experience, while guest appearances—rumored to include Don Toliver and Playboi Carti—added to the hype.

Scott also paid homage to the late Virgil Abloh with a heartfelt shoutout and visuals honoring the iconic designer. The crowd, a sea of phones and raging fans, stayed locked in for the entire set, proving his grip on festival culture is as strong as ever.

Hip-hop legend Boosie Badazz has found himself at the center of controversy following his announcement of the Caleb Wilson Memorial Scholarship during his sixth annual Boosie Bash Festival at Louisiana HBCU Southern University. The scholarship was intended to honor Caleb Wilson. A Southern University student and band member who tragically died in February in an alleged hazing incident. ?

Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill has threatened legal action against Boosie. Asserting that Wilson’s family was neither informed nor gave consent for the use of Caleb’s name and image in promoting the event. Murrill stated, “Caleb Wilson’s parents have advised me that they have not given consent and know nothing about their son’s name and image being used to promote this event.”

In response, Boosie took to social media to express his frustration and intent to counter the legal threats. He emphasized that his event had been planned and promoted well before Wilson’s untimely death, making it impossible for him to have exploited the tragedy for promotional purposes. Boosie stated, “MY EVENT WAS PROMOTED ON EVENTBRITE SINCE NOV 14. THIS INCIDENT HAPPENED A WEEK BEFORE MY EVENT WAS TO TAKE PLACE?? HOW THE F*CK CAN I CAPITALIZE OFF SOMEONE DEATH FOR A CONCERT. ”THAT AINT ME.”

Boosie further claimed that he had attempted to contact Wilson’s family to offer financial assistance but faced obstacles in establishing contact. He posted, “IVE BEEN TRYIN TO GET YALL 20k SINCE IT WAS BROUGHT TO MY ATTENTION ??T HE UNIVERSITY, NOONE WANTS TO PUT US CONTACT??

Boosie Defends His Impact on the Community

Beyond defending himself against the legal threats, Boosie also highlighted his positive influence on Baton Rouge and the surrounding community. In a passionate response directed at Murrill, he wrote:

“GENERAL LIZ MURRILL U CAN CALL ME TOO. THE REVENUE I BRING TO THE CAPITOL CITY IS UNMATCHED. THE FUN N EXCITEMENT IS UNMATCHED. NO VIOLENCE 6 YEARS IN A ROW AT MY EVENTS. NOT EVEN A FIGHT N A CITY THAT MURDERS EVERY WEEKEND. INSTEAD OF TRYING TO BRING ME DOWN N TAKE FROM ME. MAYBE YALL SHOULD ALLOW ME TO BE PUT N POSITIONS TO MAKE A CHANGE N THE CITY.”

Boosie emphasized that his annual festival, which attracts thousands of attendees. Has remained violence-free for six years—something he sees as a stark contrast to the crime rate in Baton Rouge. His remarks suggest that rather than facing legal challenges. He should be recognized as a force for positive change in the city. Especially for HBCU students and alumni who benefit from the event’s economic and cultural impact.

A Divisive Debate in the HBCU Community

The controversy has sparked a wider discussion on social media, particularly within HBCU circles. While some argue that Boosie’s intentions were honorable. Others believe he should have obtained explicit permission from the Wilson family before using Caleb’s name in connection with the event.

No formal lawsuit has been filed as of the publication of this article, but the situation underscores the importance of communication and consent when honoring individuals posthumously.

Apple TV+’s Severance wrapped up its Season 2 finale with an unforgettable tribute to HBCU marching band culture. Jackson State University alumnus Tramell Tillman (’08) delivered a performance that had viewers buzzing and comparing the moment to Beyoncé’s HBCU-inspired Coachella performance.

“I graduated from Jackson State University, and their band is the Sonic Boom of The South, the best marching band in the entire world,” Tillman told TV Guide. “This is an opportunity to highlight my culture, to highlight the significance of HBCUs — the marching bands, the showmanship, the pageantry, the discipline, the excellence, the Black joy.”

Tillman’s passion for authenticity was evident in his dedication to making the scene as true to HBCU culture as possible. “I’m a perfectionist. I kind of grind, because I want to get it pristine,” he said during Severance’s PaleyFest panel in Los Angeles. “I picked up on it very, very quickly.”

HBCU inspiration

The inspiration came from years of watching bands like Jackson State University’s Sonic Boom of The South, Bethune-Cookman, and Florida A&M. “I was in the marching band in high school. It is different from HBCU. But because I went to Jackson State University, I had the Sonic Boom of the South. Spent so much time watching them. I had to go back and look at the tapes,” Tillman told Us Weekly. “I was watching Bethune-Cookman and Florida A&M to get inspiration, and I hope I did them justice.”

Tillman’s journey to Jackson State University began after transferring from Xavier University of Louisiana following Hurricane Katrina. He switched his major to mass communication and graduated summa cum laude in 2008. His time at JSU, surrounded by the excellence of the Sonic Boom of the South, became the foundation for the sequence featured in Severance’s finale.

“These are stories that I dealt with myself being in corporate America or just being Black. So I wanted to bring credence to it and be very cautious of how we did it. It was a risk, and I’m glad that we had the license to be free and explore and let it be authentic,” he told Us Weekly.

The performance was more than a scene; it was a declaration of HBCU culture’s excellence. As Tillman continues his acting journey. He remains committed to uplifting his roots and honoring the legacy of institutions like Jackson State University.

UPDATE: Boosie responds to HBCU band scholarship controversy

Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill has announced her intention to pursue legal action against hip-hop legend Boosie Badazz for allegedly misusing the name and image of HBCU band member Caleb Wilson. The Southern University student died earlier this year in an alleged hazing incident. Boosie, a Baton Rouge native, had planned to honor Wilson by establishing a scholarship in his name. Funded by proceeds from his annual Boosie Bash music festival.

According to Murrill. Wilson’s parents were unaware of their son’s association with the event and did not consent to the use of his name or image in promotional materials. They have requested the removal of all references to Caleb from the event’s promotions. Murrill emphasized that the family’s understanding was that Boosie intended to contribute to an existing scholarship fund at Southern University. Without linking it to the for-profit event.

Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill speaks to WBRZ

“They have requested that his name, image, and any reference to a scholarship for him be removed from all promotional materials,” Murrill said, as Louisiana First News reported on behalf of Caleb Wilson’s parents. Murrill continued to say that the late Southern University student’s parents did not consent to their son’s likeness being used in “for profit” promotion.

WBRZ spoke with Murrill and reported that the family’s understanding was that Boosie wanted to start a band scholarship fund at the HBCU. Stating that he wanted to put money into starting a scholarship more than a week ago. And the discussion did not include the event.

HBCU Boosie Caleb Wilson Southern University

“All of this apparently came together in a very short order. And I think the promoters saw an opportunity to promote the event on the backs of people who just suffered an unimaginable loss,” Murrill told WBRZ. “It is just disgusting; they owe the family an apology. If they wanted to do this, the first people they should have asked was the family. Nobody has made any effort to put money in the scholarship, Boosie hasn’t even funded any of it.”

Additionally, WBRZ reached out to Boosie’s camp for a response to the statement released by the AG’s Office. WBRZ reported that Boosie’s camp stands by the interview that they gave to the ABC-affiliated television station in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on Friday.

Boosie Bash

Boosie, whose real name is Torence Hatch Jr., announced the Caleb Wilson Memorial Scholarship during the sixth annual Boosie Bash. A three-day rap festival held at Southern University. The event featured artists like GloRilla and DaBaby and was promoted as a fundraiser for the scholarship. In an interview, Boosie stated that he collaborated with Wilson’s father and others to establish the scholarship. Aiming to support future band students at the HBCU.

However, Murrill contends that connecting Wilson’s name to the event without the family’s consent constitutes a “dramatic misrepresentation and misappropriation” to support a for-profit endeavor. She criticized the promoters for exploiting the family’s tragedy for promotional purposes. Stating that Boosie had made no efforts to fund the scholarship. Murrill asserted that legal action is warranted due to the misappropriation of Wilson’s name and image.

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Trail Blazers and Alaska Airlines are once again teaming up to transform this year’s HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) to the Pros Night into a celebration of the HBCU experience across the Portland community. Members of the Howard University Showtime Marching Band and Auxiliary Units will fly to Portland, courtesy of Alaska Airlines, for a weekend of community interaction, celebration, and education. The highlight of the weekend will be the annual HBCU to the Pros game on February 22 when the Trail Blazers take on the Charlotte Hornets.

In alignment with the NBA, the Trail Blazers prioritize highlighting the traditions and impact of HBCUs and the contributions of Black leaders who belong to historically Black fraternities and sororities and alumni of Historically Black Colleges and Universities. HBCUs have served as cultural and intellectual hubs, fostering a sense of identity, pride, and leadership development. They have contributed significantly to Black culture, literature, arts, and sciences and we are excited to showcase those contributions to Rip City throughout the weekend. As the NBA team the farthest from an HBCU, bringing the HBCU experience to Portland invites the local community, specifically Black youth, to get a taste of the rich history, traditions, and culture that HBCUs embody.

HBCUs play an important role in Alaska’s commitment to contributing in a meaningful way to the communities it serves. Driven by the belief that education has the power to transform the lives of young people, Alaska supports programs like United Negro College Fund (UNCF), the nation’s largest and most effective minority education organization. To date, the airline partnered with UNCF to launch a special aircraft livery to symbolize a joint commitment to creating opportunities in education and established UNCF as a CARE Miles partner, which allows Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan members to donate their miles to students flying out for college tours or flying home to be with their families on summer and holiday breaks. As part of the aircraft’s mission, Alaska has also supported several college tours and career and leadership development events. This spring, Alaska will support Portland area students from UNCF and the Portland Opportunities Industrialization Center as they go on HBCU tours.

“Howard University and the “Showtime” Marching Band are thrilled to take the national stage at the Portland Trail Blazers’ HBCU to the Pros Night.,” said Denise Saunders Thompson, Assistant Dean for Administration, Howard University College of Fine Arts. “We are excited to bring our dynamic energy, powerful stereophonic sound, and unmatched showmanship to the Pacific Northwest. As cultural ambassadors of Howard University, this moment is more than just a performance—it’s an opportunity to share our legacy of excellence while embodying our institution’s core values of “truth and service.” We believe this opportunity will strengthen the connection between our historic university and the vibrant Portland community. Under the direction of Chancellor Mills, the Showtime Band promises an exhilarating performance that will leave a lasting impression. Get ready, Portland—we’re coming to show up and show out!”

“We’re thrilled to once again partner with Alaska Airlines to bring a taste of the HBCU experience to the Pacific Northwest with the Howard University Showtime Band,” said Michelle Jalali, Senior Director of DEI, Portland Trail Blazers. “Bringing the culture and traditions of Historically Black Colleges and Universities to Portland is a meaningful way to inspire and inform our Black and brown youth on the tremendous opportunities that these schools offer, helping to strengthen the pipeline of young people attending and graduating from HBCUs. We look forward to a weekend of celebration, education, and show-stopping entertainment.”

On Friday, February 21 the Trail Blazers and Alaska Airlines will host a community event at Portland Community College Cascade Gym (600 N Killingsworth St., Portland OR, 97217) beginning at 4 p.m. The event will be open to the public and feature performances from local dance and music groups, tabling from community groups, and the HU Showtime Marching Band’s first performance in Portland. On Saturday, February 22, both organizations will put on a private pregame mixer for local youth featuring a college and career exploration event made up of current professionals who are HBCU alumni and members of fraternities and sororities of the Divine 9. The weekend will close out on Sunday with another special community event featuring another show stopping performance from HU Showtime Marching Band.

Fans will have multiple opportunities to enjoy the incredible experience of the HU Showtime Marching Band throughout the game night. Prior to tip, catch the band participating in Blaze’s Pregame Parade presented by Polar Beverages throughout the 100 and 300 Level concourses. At halftime, stay in your seats for an epic halftime performance with the band taking over the Moda Center court with the sounds and choreography that make HBCU marching bands iconic. In addition to the band, the BlazerDancers will be joined by special guest dancers for a performance out on the court during a break in the game action.

Travis Scott debuted his new single “4×4” on Monday, performing it live at the College Football National Championship game. On Friday he dropped the music video to the song which prominently features the Prairie View A&M marching band. The song itself however contains a sample from an entirely different HBCU marching band. According to whosampled.com, the band melody that appears at the beginning and throughout the song is a sample from the Aristocrat of Bands at Tennessee State University.

The sample was reportedly taken from a 2016 performance from the AOB performing “Say Sum” by Migos. The video of the performance that was referenced was posted to YouTube on Sept. 11, 2016 by HBCUbands.com, a day after the Southern Heritage Classic. The SHC is traditionally one of the premiere HBCU football classics. It would appear that the performance was part of the ‘fifth quarter’ showdown between Jackson State and Tennessee State after the game.

Several users flocked to the comments section to discuss the performance being sampled in the song, which can be heard at the 1:17 mark of the performance.

A Fever Dream with HBCU flavor

In the music video, released on Friday, Scott uses “The Marching Storm” from Prairie View A&M. Scott grew up in Houston which is 52 miles away from the city of Prairie View.

“You might want to head on over to TravisScott.com right now and check this out! You may see somebody you know…. #4×4,” the band posted on its official Instagram account.

The video, directed by Gabriel Moses, is best described as a fever dream of visuals featuring Travis Scott. In addition to performing his lyrics in front of the HBCU band from the SWAC, Scott appears in a rodeo, as a professional wrestler, and in an OJ Simpson-style police chase. The video ends with a monkey listening to the music with headphones on as if the entire video was the primate’s thoughts.

The song debuted at No. 4 on the US Spotify Chart with 1,495,236 American streams on Friday, January 24.

Our Vaughn Wilson reminds us why the event is bigger than the narrative.

A lot has been made of Mississippi Valley State University’s Mean Green Marching Machine accepting an invitation to play at the Presidential Inauguration Parade of President Donald Trump. Most of the comments have been on the negative side. The question is how could the university and marching band support this divisive president? How can the university and band support a political party that is destroying many of the things that helped propel our Historically Black Colleges and Universities?

The answer to me is simple. I remember Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2009, like it was yesterday. I was a media person covering the FAMU Marching “100” in the inaugural parade of President Barack Obama. It was freezing cold, slightly raining at some points, long delayed because of a medical emergency, and historic at the same time.

I remember sitting in formation for nearly two hours after leaving the various security clearing positions. Because of the long line of parade performers, we were not able to go back to a warm shelter because of the medical delay at the swearing-in ceremony. We ran in circles, huddled up, and told jokes to pass the time away.

Mississippi Valley State Presidential Inauguration Parade Donald Trump

I also remember looking around during that time. We were in Washington, D.C. at one of the most sacred events on Earth. It was a historical moment. It was a moment that only happens once every four years and not everyone has been invited to participate in the historic event. That performance ending near Pennsylvania Avenue with the President of the United States and the first family saluting our band is one of the most patriotic things I’ve ever taken part in.

Not every band has on their resume that they have marched in an inaugural parade. It is an honor not to be taken lightly. It will forever be a part of the history of the university.

Most importantly, for the college students who march in the band, it will be an unforgettable adventure. First, I must admit that the bus ride from Ita Bena, Mississippi will be a long one. A Google map search indicates the ride will be over 15 hours. However, college students bond and pass the time. With the little time this younger generation spends actually socializing, it is much-needed face-to-face interaction. It will be a time they will never forget.

The anxiety of the security measures will be exciting once they are done. Going through the Pentagon parking lot they will have to disembark their bus, let the police dogs on, walk through a very sensitive metal detector, and then reload the bus. They will all have to attain Secret Service clearance in advance. There will be no doubt they will be at an official presidential event.

The entire parade route will be littered with military, federal agents, and every law enforcement officer known to man. They will be staggered two-deep and about six feet apart for the duration of the parade route. Additionally, military snipers will be on most federal buildings to prevent any attacks. That left a lasting impression on the gravity of the event that remains to this day.

Finally, when they walk past the president’s grandstand with bulletproof glass, they will realize how integral a part they will play in our country’s history. That can’t be taken for granted and can never be taken away from either the band members or the university.

While some still contend that Mississippi Valley State should not attend the Presidential Inauguration Parade and support President Donald Trump, I offer this suggestion. Mississippi is one of the lowest-funded higher education systems. Even the larger schools like Mississippi State complain of the deficiency in funding. If that school is complaining about its deficiencies, imagine the plight of the little HBCU in western Mississippi. One thing we do know about President Donald Trump, he is known to support his supporters. This could result in a shot in the arm that Mississippi Valley State sorely needs.

Itta Bena, MS— The celebrated “Mean Green Marching Machine” HBCU marching band from Mississippi Valley State University (MVSU) has received an invitation to participate in the 60th Presidential Inauguration Parade in Washington, D.C., on January 20, 2025. This historic invitation highlights the band’s legacy of excellence and cultural significance, showcasing the university and Mississippi’s rich heritage globally.

This invitation continues MVSU’s tradition of groundbreaking national performances. In 1965, the band became the first Historically Black College or University (HBCU) ensemble to march in the Tournament of Roses Parade. They returned to Pasadena in 1968 and performed in President Richard Nixon’s inaugural parade on Jan. 20, 1969. These milestones reflect the band’s enduring legacy as cultural ambassadors for Mississippi and the HBCU community.

The total cost of this historic trip, including travel, accommodations, meals, and equipment, is approximately $350,000. MVSU is committed to ensuring that every student can participate regardless of financial circumstances. The university asks alums, supporters, and the community to support this monumental endeavor.

“This is not just a moment of pride for our university but for the entire state of Mississippi,” said Dr. Jerryl Briggs, MVSU President. “It is an opportunity to showcase our legacy, celebrate our culture, and invest in the future leaders of our community.” This participation allows students to engage in the peaceful transition of power and gain global exposure while celebrating the university’s 75th anniversary,” Briggs added.

ATLANTA — The ESPN Band of The Year — a show case for HBCU marching bands — turned a corner on Friday night as it returned for the second year.

The event brought what appeared to be a much larger crowd than the inaugural event, and the HBCU Band Heads who showed up got an entertaining show from start to finish.

The ESPN Band of The Year brought a new element in 2024, adding a competion of two local high school bands. Jonesboro High School edged out Southwest DeKalb High School as both marching bands — well known for being feeders of HBCU bands around the country — both showed up ready to show they were more than a novelty act.

It was also a night for new blood in the competition between HBCU bands. Both the Division II and Division II championships featured bands that competed in the inaugural event last December. The North Carolina A&T Blue and Gold Marching Machine arrived back in Mercedes-Benz Stadium as not only the reining champion, but the number one team in the ratings from September through November — a clean sweep.

Virginia State University’s Trojan Explosion showed back up in Atlanta looking to redeem its second-place finish in the Division II ranks. Band Director Dr. Taylor Whitehead made it clear from band camp that he wanted to get back to Atlanta and finish the job.

“From Day One of band camp I told my students and their families that we would be here today,” he said during Thursday’s pre-event press conference. “That we were gonna work hard and we would return to this event and we wanted to shine as one of the top bands in the country.”

ESPN Band of The Year, HBCU Bands

Those programs competed against bands making their first appearance in the showcase — Florida A&M at the Division I level and Miles College at Division II.

FAMU, one of the more storied marching bands in all of college football, returned to a familiar place. Dr. Shelby Chipman, the band director at FAMU, estimated that 40 to 50 members of his band were from the Atlanta area. Last year the band finished ranked no. 7 in Division I.

Those band members and their teammates showed up and showed out, edging out NC A&T to take home the Division I national title as the championships were announced on Friday night after the inaugural event’s results weren’t revealed until the next day. That was another improvement from Year One to Year Two.

And then there was Miles College. The small, private HBCU based in Fairfield, AL stood out amongst its larger, land grant contemporaries. Just getting to the competition was a sacrifice as it required an initial investment from the school to house its band members during the Christmas holiday leading up to the championship. Miles College Purple Marching Machine Band Director Professor Willie Snipes said just getting the the ESPN Band of The Year meant he and his band had already won.

Miles College, ESPN Band of the Year,
Miles College took care of business in its inaugural trip to the ESPN Band of The Year.

“I’m thankful for this opportunity because a lot of my students are from backgrounds where it’s not safe,” Snipes said on Thursday. “And I’m from a background where it’s not safe. So one of my biggest prayers when they go home for break is pray that they come back And I thank you guys for this opportunity to show my students there’s more to life than the things that goes on in everyday life.”

Snipes and Miles College didn’t just show up, they showed they belonged. The Purple Marching Machine put its best foot forward and took home the Division II national title for a storybook ending.

Snipes accepted the trophy proudly and then wept briefly and then proudly carried the trophy back to his band as it hooped and hollered from the stands.

It’s safe to say that the ESPN Band of the Year has made getting to Atlanta just as important for HBCU marching bands as it is for football. It’s even more opportunistic when you consider that it is open to all HBCUs — not just the MEAC and SWAC like the Celebration Bowl. With Red Lobster coming on as a sponsor, it appears that this showcase for these rhythmic symbols of HBCU pride will continue to grow in the near future.

About the judges

No adjudicator is allowed to judge (Musicality, Pictures, Drill and Design, Percussion, Drum Majors, and Auxiliary) in a category more than once in a regular season. In summary, each of the five major adjudication areas will all have different judges for each month of the regular season. For example, if a committee member judges Musicality in Division I in September, he/she will not be able to judge that category in October or November. They will move to a different category in the next month. This has been a standard practice of the committee since the inaugural BOTY.

Other than the BOTY Committee Chairs, none of the adjudicators know the final results of the “overall” monthly rankings until they are made public by ESPN and HBCUGameday. Once adjudicators have reviewed videos, they submit scores individually and electronically without group or committee conversation. Any discussion or conversation regarding the rankings must be conducted through our chairs prior to reviewing or scoring the bands.

Auxiliary scores are based on the median or “average” of the combined totals. If the majorettes score 29, the flags 30, and dancers 31, the total auxiliary score is 30. If the dancers score 29 and the flags score 30, the total auxiliary score is 29.5. If a team only has one auxiliary unit that scores 30, their final score is 30. The units with multiple auxiliaries do not get extra points.

Adjudicators (thus far) for the College/HBCU and High School BOTY include:

Dr. Julian White, Florida A&M University, Director of Bands Emeritus
Professor Dowell Taylor, Jackson State University, Director of Bands Emeritus
Professor Lawrence Jackson, Southern University, Director of Bands Emeritus

What’s Next for ESPN Band of the Year?

With just a few months until the final showdown in Atlanta, the 2024 ESPN Band of the Year competition is closer than ever. Each performance now counts as bands refine their shows and push for a spot in the top rankings. The top two Division I bands will compete on December 13 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, right before the Cricket Celebration Bowl, for the ultimate title.

The Top five band bands at the top of our cumulative rankings in November will all be in the running to come to Atlanta for the BOTY competition. Their ranking position in the polls will be the number one factor in receiving an invitation to Atlanta. However, the BOTY committee can also consider other intangibles as it relates to the selection of the final two bands. The goal for every band is to make it to the Top 5 in November, so they can be a part of the conversation to come to Atlanta.

“This season’s BOTY promises to be one of the best yet,” said Professor Dowell Taylor, Jackson State University Director Emeritus and ESPN BOTY Chair. “Even at this early stage in the process, the renewed emphasis on the halftime field experience and the overall musical presentation has been phenomenal and very encouraging. Because most bands are so very close in the ratings. this will be a grueling process and labor of love for the adjudicators. And this is what it’s all about.”

BALTIMORE — In the follow-up to a momentous performance in France as the first-ever HBCU band to participate in the annual D-Day memorial parade, Morgan State University’s Magnificent Marching Machine marching band will add another historic first to its already impressive list of achievements. During a special halftime presentation at Morgan’s 2024 Homecoming football game, the Magnificent Marching Machine, led by Director of Bands Jorim E. Reid Sr., D.M.A., announced before thousands of attendees and supporters that the band has been selected by the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association to perform in the 137th Rose Parade in 2026.

Each year, the Pasadena Tournament of Roses selects unique and exceptional bands worldwide to march in the Rose Parade. With Morgan’s selection to participate in this time-honored tradition, the University adds to a legacy and becomes an HBCU band member of the Pasadena Tournament of Roses family. The Association’s volunteer members select participating bands based on various criteria, including musicianship, marching ability, and entertainment or special interest value.

“The selection of Morgan’s Magnificent Marching Machine to participate in the 137th Rose Parade is a major achievement, not just for our band but for the entire Morgan community. This historic opportunity allows us to showcase the exceptional talent, energy and spirit of our students on an international stage,” said David K. Wilson, president of Morgan State University. “This is an extraordinary moment of pride for Morgan, and I do not doubt that the world will be as captivated by the Magnificent Marching Machine as we are every time they take the field.”

The Rose Parade is watched by an estimated 50 million people worldwide. It is broadcast in more than 170 countries and has an estimated live audience of 1–1.5 million. In comparison, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade draws a viewing audience of nearly 30 million. The band was selected to lead and perform in the 2019 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, another first for the University. For many marching bands, the goal is to be invited to perform in the “Triple Crown” of parade events, consisting of the Macy’s and Rose Parades and the U.S. Presidential Inaugural Parade. Few HBCU bands achieve the goal of participating in the three high-visibility, exclusive events, and hitting this trifecta has proven even more challenging for HBCUs. Morgan has been selected for two of the three, and this happens to be an election year, with the next Inaugural Parade taking place in January.

“There’s no bigger event in the marching band world than the Rose Parade. When you perform on New Year’s Day, the eyes of the world are watching,” said Dr. Reid. “It is an honor for our university to be invited, and a great opportunity for our students and marching band program to be highlighted globally. We look forward to our turn to participate in what’s known as ‘The Granddaddy of Them All.’”

HBCU band Rose Parade Morgan State University Magnificent Marching Machine Pasadena Tournament of Roses

Dr. Reid is believed to be the first and only band director to take different university bands to participate in the Rose Parade. When he last directed a band in the iconic parade, North Carolina Central University, it was only the seventh HBCU band in Tournament of Roses history to receive the honor.

For its Homecoming halftime performance, the Magnificent Marching Machine wove the Rose Parade announcement into a special performance of hit music from R&B sensation Usher. The band also executed intricate formations on the field, including using band members to form the words “Usher,” “Rose” and “Vote.” Between song renditions, a video message from Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association President Mark Leavens played to announce the selection to Homecoming attendees. The Association will release its official announcement and line-up of invited bands in March 2025.

Each year, approximately 20–25 bands are selected to perform, including a mix of high school, college, and community bands and military and international groups. Since the Tournament of Roses began including bands in its parade lineup in 1890, the tradition has grown to international fame. Over the course of its history, thousands of bands have applied, but only a fraction have been selected, making the acceptance a prestigious achievement.

Annually, only one or two college or university marching bands not associated with the football teams playing in the Rose Bowl are chosen to perform in the Rose Parade. The acceptance rate for college and university bands remains around 10–15% of those who apply.

Since its launch, the Rose Parade has been a New Year’s Day tradition. The parade extends nearly 5½ miles down Colorado Boulevard in Pasadena, California. It features four types of entries: floral-decorated floats entered by participating corporations, non-profit organizations or municipalities; equestrian units; bands; and Tournament entry vehicles carrying the parade grand marshal, the mayor of Pasadena, the Tournament of Roses president, and other VIPs.

The Jackson State University Sonic Boom of the South, one of the top HBCU bands in the nation, has selected the fourth woman in its history, Senior Ariel Woods from Dallas, Texas, as one of its drum majors for the 2024-2025 band season.

The 300-member Sonic Boom is led by five drum majors every year collectively known as the “Jackson Five.” Ariel Woods will be just the fourth woman to lead the historic HBCU band whose roots go back to the 1920’s.

As one of the top HBCU bands, the Jackson State University Sonic Boom does far more than perform at halftime of games. The Sonic Boom of the South is one of the most in-demand acts in the music industry today, performing at multiple NFL halftime shows, the Motown 30th anniversary special, and was the surprise guest for the opening night of Drake and J. Cole’s It’s All A Blur — Big as the What? Tour.

“Everything kind of just started happening in slow motion. Everybody started coming and started cheering me on and was just really excited that I was going to be the next drum major,” Ariel Woods told Brooklyn Joyner of 19 WAPT News in Jackson, Mississippi.

“I’m getting the crowd hyped. I’m getting the crowd riled up. I’m getting people excited for the band and the football team… A drum major is someone who is a natural born leader, someone who has a real passion to lead the others and make concrete decisions,” Woods continued in the interview.

Ariel Woods is the first woman to be a drum major for the Jackson State University Sonic Boom of the South since DeyShaun Roberts held the role in 2017, where she was the first woman drum major since 2006.

I’m a figure for women. I’m a figure for little girls coming up who are in band and who want to be in this position as a drum major,” Woods told WAPT news.

Becoming one of the leaders of the Sonic Boom wasn’t an easy process for Ariel Woods. With no previous ties to Jackson State University of the Sonic Boom of the South, Woods became enamored with the HBCU band by watching videos on YouTube and decided that she wanted to become part of the band history at Jackson State.

“This position is something I’ve been dreaming about for the last seven years now. I’ve always had doubts along the way, but I never gave up. I never said I can’t do this… This is my second time trying out to be a drum major, so it’s nothing short of an honor. It’s nothing short of a blessing being placed in this position as a woman. I just know how prestigious this is. It’s not something that I really can just put into words.”

Something Woods was able to put into words was her desire to further the legacy of female drum majors, “I really want to instill more women being in these prestigious and male-dominant roles because I just love seeing women and female drum majors in middle schools, colleges, and universities.”

Watch one of the premiere HBCU bands in the nation, the North Carolina A&T Blue and Gold Marching Machine, as they perform at halftime of the Aggie Eagle Classic rivalry game between North Carolina A&T and North Carolina Central University.

About the Blue & Gold Marching Machine

The North Carolina A&T State University band program was started in 1918 with about a 50-piece band. During then, the band was the backbone of the music department. By the 1930s, the band was offered as an extracurricular activity. During this time, A&T was the only black college in North Carolina with a band. But when the 1960s rolled around, the administration changed and the music department was combined with other divisions besides the band. Since then the size of the band has increased to numbers as large as 210 members.

As one of the premier HBCU bands in the nation, the Blue and Gold Marching Machine is synonymous with high stepping performances, precise drills, powerful, yet melodic sounds, and energy! As the premier band of North Carolina and ranking high among the top HBCU Marching Bands, the Blue & Gold Marching Machine of NC A&T State University is a force to be reckoned with!

Under the leadership of visionary, Dr. Kenneth Ruff, “The Blue and Gold Machine” brings crowds of fans to their feet year after year. The hard work of band members has lead to numerous recognitions such as winners of the Honda Battle of The Bands, the 2003 Defeat the Beat Champions, official band of the Carolina Panthers NFL franchise, the lead band for the 2012 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City and a top 10 band as reported by Sports Illustrated.

The position of Drum Major in an HBCU Band is a role that holds one of the highest distinctions on an HBCU football game day. Even with record enrollments and increased diversity at historically black colleges and universities, the Drum Major of an HBCU band is a role that is still commonly occupied by African-American males. According to a report by the Savannah Tribune, Savannah State University’s Powerhouse of the South Marching Band will come into its 2024 football season with its first-ever white Drum Major in Hinesville, Georgia native Christopher Taylor.

Taylor, in his third year as a member of the Powerhouse of the South Marching Band told the Tribune, “I am just very honored to be a part of Savannah State’s history. I aim to make the school proud and paint a bright future for not only the band program but for the city of Savannah as well.”

Taylor initially tried out for Drum Major in the spring but wasn’t chosen, he tried out again for the Fall season and was picked for the position. “I didn’t want to give up. Becoming drum major was a goal I set out for myself when I first came to SSU and I wanted to see it through to the end,” Taylor said.

Chris Taylor will be one of three Drum Majors for Savannah State this year, joining Aaron Franklin and head drum major Shai McKenney in leading the 125-member band.

Savannah State director of bands Dr. Gabriel Arnold told the Savannah Tribune that seven others tried out for the position but that Taylor’s marching and communication skills got him the job over the other candidates. “He is an outstanding marcher and gives 1000 percent each time he is on the field…He also has great communication skills and he won over a lot of the members because of that,” said Dr. Gabriel.

Aubrey Simmons, a former Drum Major at North Carolina Central University was Chris Taylor’s band director in high school at the Bradwell Institute in Hinesville, Georgia, and has been an assistant band director for the Powerhouse of the South since 2021, working closely with Taylor as he has transitioned from the corps style of marching band of his high school to the flashier showtime or HBCU style of marching band in college.

“He joined the marching band his sophomore year (of high school) and began to work really hard on becoming a great bandsman. He worked hard to become section leader his senior year and did an amazing job of leading a great group of students… Chris is the first collegiate drum major to come out of one of my band programs. I am hoping that he will not be the last. I do know that he will be great at SSU leading the band this coming year.” Simmons says in the article.

HBCU Band Savannah State Drum Major

While Chris Taylor isn’t the first white Drum Major of an HBCU band, it is still rare to see a white person in the leading role of an African-American musical institution like an HBCU Band, but with Taylor being local to the region and a fan of the HBCU style of play, his connections to the area and music make him a perfect fit for the role, regardless of race. “I would say Bradwell had a huge impact on my decisions not only because of style but because of Mr Aubrey Simmons. He encouraged SSU as an option and knowing he was also involved with SSU’s band I felt comfortable with the decision…Savannah isn’t too far from home and the tuition compared to other schools seemed a lot more manageable. The band also grabbed my attention and I knew I wanted to be apart of this style and culture in Savannah.”

Taylor will take the field for his first game as a Drum Major against Central State University on Sept. 14 at Theodore A. Wright Stadium in Savannah, Georgia.

TORRANCE, Calif. – Honda Battle of the Bands (HBOB) fans have made their voices heard, casting votes online to select the final two HBCU bands to perform at the live event: Hampton University and University of Arkansas Pine Bluff.

The full HBOB 2025 lineup includes:

 • Alabama A&M University – Marching Maroon and White Band
 • Alabama State University – Mighty Marching Hornets
 • Hampton University – The Marching Force
 • North Carolina A&T University – Blue and Gold Marching Machine
 • Southern University – Human Jukebox Marching Band
 • University of Arkansas Pine Bluff – Marching Musical Machine of the Mid-South

Honda will provide an institutional grant to each of the six HBCU schools for their respective music education programs and support the bands’ travel expenses to the Invitational Showcase in Los Angeles. All 52 bands that participated in the voting process will also be awarded an HBOB Legacy Grant from Honda.

“Honda is thrilled to continue our longstanding support of the HBCU community through HBOB which is a core part of our Drive the Legacy initiative,” said Jasmine Cockfield, the project leader for Honda Battle of the Bands at American Honda Motor Co., Inc. “We congratulate each of this year’s participating HBCU bands and are confident that they will put on a memorable show for HBOB fans that promises to be a showcase for the ages.”

Honda has supported HBCUs for over 35 years, recognizing their critical role in providing higher education and opportunities for advancement to the Black community. This support includes scholarships, programming, and initiatives that celebrate the dreams and potential of HBCU students, helping shape them into future leaders. Through HBOB and the Honda Campus All-Star Challenge, Honda has awarded over $14 million in grants in support of HBCU education programs and facilities improvements, impacting the lives of more than 300,000 students.

New Band Selection Process for the 2025 Event

In addition to hosting its first-ever West Coast showcase, HBOB also reimagined its approach to the band selection process. In July, the Honda Legacy Council selected North Carolina A&T University and Southern University to perform at HBOB 2025. From there, each university issued a challenge to one other eligible HBCU marching band to perform at the upcoming live event, with North Carolina A&T University challenging Alabama A&M University, and Southern University challenging Alabama State University.

Honda launched a public voting phase on July 16 and invited fans to help determine the final two bands in the lineup. Fans could vote for their favorite band once per day through August 15. The two bands receiving the highest number of votes from a roster of 52 eligible schools were awarded the final two spots in the HBOB 2025 lineup.

Jackson State University has introduced a new policy requiring media outlets to purchase credentials to record their famous marching band, the Sonic Boom of the South, during home games. According to the guidelines, media outlets looking to exclusively capture footage of the band or the visiting band must pay for proper access, with regular credentials costing $300.

For media outlets intending to stream the footage live, the fee rises to $500. Failure to comply with this policy may result in immediate dismissal from stadium grounds.

The policy outlines strict rules regarding media interaction with the band. Media members are not permitted to film within the band or disrupt performances, including interactions with banner carriers, drum majors, dancers, and directors. Filming is allowed from designated areas in the “horseshoe” and cannot take place on the field. Field-level footage is restricted to outside the press box, and media must maintain a 5-foot distance from the sidelines without encroaching on the band’s space.

Jackson State University’s Sonic Boom of the South emphasized that the policy aims to support their students while also providing financial benefits to the program. They noted that their program brings significant viewership and revenue to media outlets, justifying the new fees. Jackson State University hopes this new initiative will be embraced by the media as they explore opportunities to further support the band and showcase the hard work of their students. Payments must be received three days before the event to secure credentials.

The post HBCU Band Battle: Morgan State vs Hampton University appeared first on HBCU Gameday.

]]>
Let me set the stage: I’m no band enthusiast, and I’m definitely not qualified to judge a battle of the bands. I’ve been around HBCU band culture long enough to know a good show when I see one, but my focus has always been more on the field than the halftime performance. When I started working for HBCU Gameday, I wasn’t exactly impressed with Morgan State’s band, the Magnificent Marching Machine. To be honest, I thought they had one of the worst bands in the HBCU scene. But I have to give credit where it’s due—over the years, they’ve been on a steady path of improvement, and this was evident during halftime the against Hampton University Marching Force.

Fast forward to this past weekend when I was at the Morgan State vs. Hampton football game. Hampton University’s band, known as The Marching Force, made its entrance into the stadium first, marching in with that unmistakable Hampton regality that can make an alum’s heart swell with pride. They had the precision and traditional flair that you expect from Hampton.

Then came the surprise. As I was shooting the game, suddenly, the sound of horns blasted through the air. I turned around to see the Magnificent Marching Machine making its entrance, and it was a whole different vibe. They marched in with a swagger and a sound that you’d expect to hear below the Mason-Dixon line, not in Baltimore. Their presence was loud and in-your-face, and for a moment, it felt like they were stealing the show right out from under The Marching Force.

The Marching Force seemed caught off guard, almost like they weren’t sure how to react. They just stood there, looking at Morgan’s band like, “What just happened?” It reminded me of those intense band showdowns between North Carolina A&T and South Carolina State, where the competition level is through the roof. But this time, The Marching Force didn’t seem to have a response ready, and the Magnificent Marching Machine took full advantage, carrying that energy right into the halftime show.

HBCU band Morgan State Hampton University

If we’re talking purely about sound quality, The Marching Force might have had the upper hand. Their performance was polished and refined, living up to the high expectations of Hampton’s band legacy. But the Magnificent Marching Machine brought something different to the table—raw energy and a swagger that was impossible to ignore. They’ve come a long way since I first started covering them, and their performance showed that it’s not just about playing the notes perfectly; it’s about bringing the kind of energy that makes you turn your head and take notice. This battle of the bands was more than just a musical contest; it was a statement that the Magnificent Marching Machine is no longer content to sit quietly in the background.

This Saturday’s MEAC vs SWAC matchup in Tallahassee, FL will not only feature two traditional football rivals, the Florida A&M (FAMU) Rattlers and South Carolina State (SC State) Bulldogs, but it will also feature a top-tier HBCU band battle at halftime. The FAMU Marching 100 will square off against the SC State Marching 101. Starting with the names, it already brings about a mythical comparison.

Dr. William P. Foster took over the marching bands at FAMU in 1946. At the time, FAMU’s band was a military band, much like many in HBCU. It was very stiff and precise. Foster developed and patented 30 new moves for the marching band that have become standard in most marching bands, especially an HBCU band. Dr. Shelby Chipman currently leads the Marching 100.

In 1918, South Carolina State University began its marching band. It began with military drills and assisted with Sunday school. Dr. William H. Jackson was the school’s first director of bands. Currently, Dr. Patrick Moore leads the band. He took the reigns in 2018.

The story of Marching 100 and Marching 101

The interesting thing about the name Marching 100 is that the band never had 100 members. The band was smaller than 50 pieces when Foster took over. His goal was to get up to 100 musicians, thus the name Marching 100 came to fruition. However, the band went from about 80 members to about 115 members and has grown at times to over 400 members. Never did it stop at 100 members.

Talking with several sources, the name difference is not pinpointed to one scenario, but two major ones. The first scenario centers around two brothers. Longtime FAMU band arranger Dr. Lindsey Sarjeant, who also serves as chairman of the FAMU Department of Music, has a brother who was band director for SCSU from 1976 to 2004. This period saw a rise in the profile of the band. Dr. Ronald Sarjeant would claim that the SCSU band was one step above FAMU’s renowned band, so he gave them the name Marching 101.

The second scenario is that SCSU’s band had 100 members. When they added a lone majorette to the squad, it took on the name Marching 101.

Moore laughs at the number of stories he’s heard about how the name came about. “I’ve even heard some more stories recently. I am not sure anyone can nail down a definitive answer,” he said.

However, research finds that Southern University previously was named the Marching 132 and Marching 150 before settling on their current and most popular name “The Human Jukebox.”

She taught the band to dance

HBCU HBCU band FAMU Marching 100 Marching 101

In the late 1950s, Foster went to the Dean of the School of Music and announced sweeping new additions to the band. One of which has defined marching bands to this day. Breaking from the pure precision nature of the military bands, Foster would garner the assistance of the school’s dance instructor, Dr. Beverly Barber. She would teach the band dance moves while Foster picked and chose what he wanted them to perform. This was documented by Ebony magazine and is considered the first time a band would break traditional marching precision to perform jazz and popular dancing.

Many North Carolina A&T fans wanted a homecoming game against an HBCU – and it got that against Hampton University.

However, the Oct. 19 matchup with its lone HBCU counterpart in the Coastal Athletic Association will not feature a competing band in the stands.

Dr. Thomas L Jones, Director of Bands at Hampton University, posted a statement on his Facebook page that got the people going on Tuesday morning.

Dear Family, Friends, Fans, and Foes of The Hampton University Marching Force, as you probably would have figured, the band will not be making the trip to Greensboro for the game against NC A&T. Their athletics department does not allow visiting bands to attend GHOE, since they prefer to sell those seats to accommodate the Homecoming crowd.

We will have to wait until 2026 to make the long-awaited return to Aggie Stadium.

North Carolina A&T, HBCU

The policy of not inviting opposing marching bands to perform at its homecoming – billed as the Greatest Homecoming On Earth (GHOE) by its alumni and administration – reportedly goes back for the better part of a decade. The lone exception to that ruling was when North Carolina A&T hosted then-MEAC foe Norfolk State for homecoming 2018. The NSU Spartan Legion did take up precious real estate in then-Aggie Stadium, which lists its capacity at 21,500.

NSU’s rivals from across the bay won’t be afforded the same opportunity to face off against the Blue and Gold Marching Machine. The NC A&T band did travel to Hampton last season when it was the homecoming invitee.

Should HBCUs be expected to extend the opportunity to perform at halftime to other HBCUs during homecoming?

Jackson State University’s Sonic Boom of the South, one of the country’s top HBCU bands, is on a mission to raise funds for its highly anticipated performance at the 136th Rose Parade in Pasadena, California, on January 1, 2025.

The Sonic Boom, renowned for its electrifying shows, has earned a spot in the Rose Parade, a significant milestone for the band and Jackson State University. Last summer, Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association President Ed Morales was surprised to learn that the band had never participated in the parade before. This selection has given the Sonic Boom ample time to prepare and raise the necessary funds for the trip.

To cover travel expenses, Jackson State University has launched the “Give the Boom Their Roses” fundraising campaign. The campaign has gained momentum with community support and recent events. Supporters can donate online to help send the band to California. Jackson State University recently held a “Give the Boom Their Roses Day,” featuring performances, community activities, and speeches to boost fundraising efforts.

Jackson State University band has been on fire. The Sonic Boom of the South has been making waves with its performances for decades, particularly within the last year. It participated in the inaugural Band of the Year competition, which delivered outstanding performances but fell short of North Carolina A&T.

It also opened for Drake and J. Cole’s concert, showcasing its talent to a wider audience. The HBCU band performed with Usher at the 2024 Super Bowl and remains focused and determined to shine at the Rose Parade.

JSU Band Director Roderick Little and Dr. Lisa Beckley-Roberts, chair of Jackson State University’s music department, have emphasized the band’s rigorous preparation. The Sonic Boom will begin its training with physical exercises every morning before sunrise, followed by marching and practicing in formation.

The Sonic Boom’s journey has united the Jackson State University community. Local businesses and alumni associations are organizing fundraisers and donating to support the band’s travel expenses. The campaign includes a video titled “Give the Boom Their Roses,” where band members share what the band means to them.

Join the movement and support the Sonic Boom of the South on its road to the Rose Parade. Your donations will help make this dream a reality. To donate, visit their fundraising page.

The 30th annual Florida A&M University (FAMU) Band Camp brought high schoolers from across the country to play with one of the top HBCU bands in the country. Musicians from California to Washington, D.C. flew in to take part in a week-long crash course into marching band techniques as taught by FAMU Director of Marching Bands, Dr. Shelby Chipman, and his entire staff.

The week ended with performances. Friday, the bands performed in a parade across the FAMU campus. The path was nearly identical to the path of the annual FAMU Homecoming parade. Saturday was the finale with a big show in the Al Lawson Center.

ESPN Events has been involved with HBCU football for nearly 20 years since the inception of the MEAC/SWAC Challenge. That involvement increased with the creation of the Celebration Bowl in 2015 and got even bigger last year with the ESPN Band of The Year competition in 2023.

In an insightful conversation at SWAC Media Day, Steven J. Gaither, founder of HBCU Gameday, sat down with John Grant, the Executive Director of ESPN Events. Their discussion provided an in-depth look at the excitement and preparation leading up to the second annual HBCU ESPN Band Of The Year competition.

HBCU Football kicks off college football

With the football season approaching, the atmosphere was electric. Grant remarked on the palpable energy at SWAC Media Day, a sign that the football season was truly underway.

“You can smell the football, the pigskin in the air,” he said, emphasizing the anticipation building up to the MEAC/SWAC Challenge featuring Florida A&M University and Norfolk State University. This year marks a historic first as the reigning national champions, the Florida A&M Rattlers, will open the season, setting the stage for an unforgettable event.

Norfolk State Spartan Legion could get back to Atlanta for Band of The Year.

ESPN Band of The Year Grows

One of the highlights of the conversation was the announcement of the Band Of The Year competition. Last year’s inaugural event at Mercedes-Benz Stadium set a high standard, and both Gaither and Grant were eager to see how the competition would evolve. “We’re thrilled because this is the first time that we have a reigning national champion,” Grant noted, referring to the excitement of seeing the Marching 100 along with Florida A&M football in town to take on Norfolk State football and the Spartan Legion in Atlanta.

The Band Of The Year competition, which debuted last year, showcased the incredible talent and spirit of HBCU bands. North Carolina A&T won the Division I bracket, beating out Jackson State University. And either of this season’s MEAC/SWAC bands could be back in December as well.

“People don’t get to see the Spartan Legion as much, so being able to have them in Atlanta on the stage is significant,” Grant said.

The competition has garnered immense excitement, with schools like Winston-Salem State University vying for a spot in the national championship at the Division II level. Florida Memorial won last year’s competition at that level.

Reflecting on the first year of the competition, Grant emphasized the importance of laying a solid foundation.

“Year one for us was really about laying the groundwork,” he explained. The event was not only entertaining but also a success in terms of television production and viewership. With lessons learned from the first year, ESPN Events plans to make significant tweaks to enhance the experience.

The conversation wrapped up with anticipation for the Celebration Bowl, an event that continues to grow each year. Despite changes brought about by the expanded College Football Playoff, the commitment to protecting and enhancing the experience for fans and participants remains strong. Grant highlighted the importance of adapting to new schedules and ensuring that the bowl season opens with high-quality, competitive games.

As the second annual HBCU ESPN Band Of The Year competition approaches, the excitement is palpable. With the support of HBCU Gameday and the commitment of ESPN Events, this year promises to be a spectacular celebration of the musical talent, cultural heritage, and competitive spirit that define HBCU bands.

HBCU marching bands have a unique star power that’s almost impossible to replicate. So much so that they’ve become stars in their own right, frequently booking more paid traveling performances in a year than they have football games. The Magnificent Marching Machine of Morgan State University will become the first HBCU marching band to perform at the annual D-Day Memorial Parade in Paris.

“This is huge for Morgan State University and huge for an HBCU,” the band’s director Jorim Reid told WBALTV-11 in Baltimore. “This is huge for Morgan State, one, being that there are Morganites that served. There are Morganites that served after World War II that will be traveling with us that are near and dear to us,” Reid also said in the interview.

Reid also talked about his family ties to World War II as his grandfather served in the army during World War II. “He entered Europe through Normandy, went to England and that’s where they trained,” Reid recalled.

The significance of the D-Day Memorial Parade is not missed by the students in the band either. Drummer Kyra Scott told WBALTV-11, “My great-grandfather actually fought in World War II as well and met my great-grandmother. That’s important for me, as well, and (to) honor everybody else in America.”

Head Drum Major Tory James spoke about the impact this trip to Paris will have on him, “Going across the country, (I) never thought I would do that in my band career. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. (I’m) glad that I can be a part of it,” James said.

The performance will also honor the United States of America as the Morgan State Magnificent Marching Machine is set to perform “Stars and Stripes” and “Tribute to America.”

“When we think of the historic events that have shaped the 20th century and the decades thereafter, the courageous moments that took place on the beaches of Normandy, France nearly 80 years ago, are among them. The opportunity to have our students not only represent our University but also our nation on such a grand world stage in recognition of such a monumental occasion is truly an honor,” said David K. Wilson, president of Morgan State University.

“Our thanks to the event organizers for their recognition of the talented student performers we have at Morgan, and for providing them with this lifetime experience allowing them to touch history.

The band is scheduled to leave for Paris on June 6 and stay through June 12.

The hip-hop beef between rappers Drake and Kendrick Lamar may be over for the artists – but it is very likely to carry over into HBCU band season.

The face-off between Los Angeles’ favorite son and Toronto’s King hit a fever pitch over the weekend as the artists exchanged diss songs in a battle that had been simmering for weeks.

One track, in particular, has lovers of HBCU bands already thinking of what the arrangement will sound like. Kendrick Lamar’s ‘Not Like Us’ not only served to attack Drake, it also has turned into a viral dance track and is being declared a club banger.

Rapper Joe Budden, host of the Joe Bidden Podcast, immediately thought of HBCU marching bands when he heard the track.

“YOU BETTER THANK YOUR F&&KING HEAVENS UP ABOVE THAT IT IS NOT HBCU SEASON!” Budden exclaimed. “YOU BETTER THANK GOD THAT THEM BANDS…”

Budden and his co-hosts instinctively hopped up and imitated HBCU marching band members.

“They gonna kill it!!!

The highly-anticipated Super Bowl halftime show featuring Usher had a surprise – the Jackson State University Sonic Boom of The South.

The marching band accompanied Usher on the field in Las Vegas as he performed some of the biggest hits of his 30-year career on Sunday night on the Super Bowl halftime stage.

Jackson State University Director of Bands Dr. Rodrick Little posted a letter about the performance.

Jackson State University, Super Bowl

Usher, NFL, Apple Music, and Roc Nation for the opportunity to share the world’s largest stage with one of the most iconic performers of our time! We had a blast! The past 10 days in Vegas have been rewarding for our students and program in preparation for a show that won’t be forgotten.

Over the years, the Jackson State University Sonic Boom of the South has shared the stage and screen with stars like Drake, Lil Boosie, Ciara, Cedric the Entertainer, Lil Jon, Big Krit, Pastor Troy, Jon Batiste, J. Cole, Yo Gitti, Dear Silas, F.L.Y. and more. From Motown’s 30th Anniversary to the NBA AlI-Star Game to the NAACP Image Awards to the Inauguration of President Joe Biden, we are always honored when given the opportunity to represent our University, City, and HBCU community on the global stage.

In November of last year, our students were hand selected to join Usher on the field for halftime at Super Bowl LVIII. This honor adds to the Boom’s legacy of iconic performances and moments that help elevate our University’s name and brand.

I want to give a special shoutout to our students, staff, campus community, and administration for holding one of the best kept secrets in Jackson State history. And thank you alumni and friends for all you do to support the Sonic Boom of the South! Stay tuned for more to come in 2024!

The Jackson State University Sonic Boom made headlines earlier in the month when it helped bring Drake out at the start of his new tour. It is planning on going to the 2025 Tournament of Roses Parade.

Saturday’s matchup between Columbia neighbors and rivals Allen University and Benedict College has been dubbed “The Battle for Taylor Street” and it lived up to the hype.

The day had everything you want from your rival games as the women brought the drama with Allen’s 65-53 come-from-behind win over Benedict and the men allowed the home crowd to brag as Benedict College defeated Allen University 81-62.

The women’s game was close throughout with Benedict (3-15, 1-10) leading at the half 30-27. Allen (5-10, 2-8) took a 48-46 lead with 7:38 left in the fourth quarter after a Victoria Zidor steal and score off of an errant Benedict Collegeinbound pass, followed by a Kashay Hankerson fastbreak layup. The Yellow Jackets were able to get separation down the stretch and ended with a dagger three as time was about to expire.

It was pure jubilation at the final buzzer as the Yellow Jackets got a much-needed win according to first-year head coach LaToya Jones.

“Regardless of this being a rivalry game, we had been seeking a win for a long time,” she said. “We hadn’t experienced a win since before Thanksgiving and we had been working hard and coming close, working hard and coming close. I think this win really just solidified our confidence. We kept our confidence and we didn’t come down to what our record said.”

“This means a lot because this was a team win, this was a grit win against a great team, a team with a rich history of championships,” Jones added.“It was a rivalry so I knew it was going to be tight, but I knew that if we kept our heads and we stayed in the fight, we were going to be ok.”

Nari Coe led the way for Allen University with 19 points and five rebounds, followed by Hankerson with 13 points and two rebounds.

Alaysia Nash was the leading scorer for Benedict College, finishing with 13 points and four rebounds. Madison Golden was next with 10 points and eight rebounds.

The men’s game was decided early as the Benedict Tigers (15-2, 9-2) jumped out to an early 16-9 lead and never looked back. Allen (9-9, 5-6) made a 20-9 run in the third quarter to cut the lead to 13, but that was as close as they would come as the Tigers closed it out.

Asanti Prince led the Tigers in scoring with 25 points, followed by Time Moore with 14. Malachi Moore posted a double with 11 points and 13 rebounds. Gob Gabrial was the final Tiger in double digits with 11 points.

For Allen, Jordan Edmond was the high-point man with 25, followed by G’Shan Aldridge with 12.

The Tigers have been playing with heavy hearts in January after the passing of JV player Garry Cappers II, affectionately known as Deuce. Benedict has dedicated this season to him and is currently on a two-game winning streak after recording the only two losses of the season. Head coach Artis Maddox credited his team for their resiliency as well as the community for their support. It’s one of the best starts in the last 25 years and Maddox said he’s pleased with what they’ve accomplished so far.

“I’m very happy, I’m very pleased with where we are. If somebody had told me 17 games in, we would be 15-2, I’dda took that before the season started,” he said. “We’re right where we need to be and now we just have to take it one game at a time and try to go 1-0 each game.”

Round two of The Battle For Taylor Street will be Saturday, Feb. 17 at 1 and 3 p.m.

The 2024 Denny’s Orange Blossom Classic is slated for Sept. 1 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Fla. It will pit the Alabama State Hornets of the SWAC against the North Carolina Central Eagles (NCCU) of the MEAC. Both teams finished in the Top 10 of polling of HBCU Division-I teams in 2023. The Eagles were HBCU national champions in 2022.

The Denny’s Orange Blossom Classic restarted in 2021 with a three-game series between the Florida A&M Rattlers and Jackson State Tigers. The game would be a direct determining factor in the SWAC championship as the winner of the game would go on to win the conference from 2021-2023.

Long held as the Black national championship in the golden era of HBCU football, the game brings a wealth of energy, entertainment, tradition, and culture to South Florida. Both ASU and NCCU will enjoy the opportunity to play in front of the hotbed of football talent in the country.

Under head coach Trei Oliver, the Eagles finished 9-3 (4-1 MEAC) last season, tied for first in the MEAC with eventual champion Howard University. Alabama State’s Eddie Robinson Jr. guided the Hornets to a 7-4 season (4-3 SWAC).

Bulluck excited to host the Orange Blossom Classic in South Florida

Kendra Bulluck, Executive Director of the OBC, shares her enthusiasm: “The Orange Blossom Classic has always been a beacon of opportunity and unity in the HBCU community. This year, we present the talents of North Carolina Central University Eagles and Alabama State University Hornets, offering an exciting experience. We welcome both teams with open arms and are excited about the unique energy and competition they will bring to the classic.”

Orange Blossom Classic Alabama State

Dr. Louis “Skip” Perkins, Director of Athletics, NCCU shares his anticipation: “It’s very exciting to have NCCU football playing in the Orange Blossom Classic to kick-off the 2024 season on Labor Day weekend. The Orange Blossom Classic has a deep history with HBCUs from the MEAC and SWAC and with Coach Oliver’s connections to both conferences, North Carolina Central University is proud to now take part in that tradition for an event that will bring both national exposure and scholarship fundraising to both our campus and HBCUs. NCCU football has played in numerous high-profile games in recent years under Coach Oliver, including marquee venues and postseason games, and the Eagles taking the field inside Hard Rock Stadium on September 1st will only continue to grow that legacy.”

Dr. Jason Cable, Director of Athletics, ASU expresses his excitement: “Alabama State University Athletics is thrilled to be a part of the Denny’s Orange Blossom Classic (OBC) and its long-standing tradition. I want to thank Kendra Bulluck and the OBC committee for the invitation. This game enhances our overall student-athlete experience and gives our young men the opportunity of a lifetime, including national exposure and playing in a professional venue. The OBC also provides a great opportunity to strengthen our brand in South Florida. We look forward to bringing the Hornet Nation to Miami Gardens to kick off the 2024 football season.”

ATLANTA – Celebration Bowl has become a fixture in the HBCU calendar, and this year a sister event was added – the ESPN Band of The Year.

Florida Memorial took home the Division II Band of The Year, while North Carolina A&T took home the award on the Division I level. The results were announced on Saturday, just over 20 hours after the event itself.

ESPN Events’ John T. Grant, executive director of the Celebration Bowl as well as the MEAC/SWAC Challenge, came to the HBCU Gameday Studios to talk about the event with our Tolly Carr and Steven J. Gaither. Grant said the purpose of the event was to create something that both showcased HBCU bands AND compensated them properly.

“Changing the mindset was great. Putting economics behind it,” Grant said. “At the end of the day it’s going to come down to – you don’t pay a bill, signed with exposure. And if you can get both and we can help facilitate both, then we’re getting the best of both worlds. And that’s what this event was about.”

Band of The Year, Jackson State,

Friday’s event took place at 6 PM on Friday, with fans spread all over the massive Mercedes-Benz Stadium in the shadow of downtown Atlanta. Grant said he anticipates having all the fans on one side of the stadium next year as the event continues to grow. And he does expect it to grow.

“This event is going to be as big as the Celebration Bowl – if not bigger. And you’re hearing it here first,” Grant said on the HBCU Gameday set. “This was just Year One. It was Year One for everyone – including us. This has never been done before.”

Grant said that the judges began scoring at 10 PM and worked into the morning. He said the plan, all along, was to announce the winner after halftime at Saturday’s game. That decision was two-fold – giving the judges time to audit the scores and to make sure to give Florida A&M and Howard University their moment to shine on the field at halftime of the Celebration Bowl.

“We didn’t want to announce the champion ahead of halftime,” Grant said. “Then it takes the air out of the sails of the bands that are performing at the Celebration Bowl. And we felt the appropriate time was to do it then.”

Grant said that there would be some modifications from Year One to Year Two. Some would be slight, like moving all the fans to one side of stadium. The ESPN Band of the Year trophies, like the Celebration Bowl trophy, will go on a traveling tour as well. He also revealed hopes for an additional event

“I believe it is something we can implement, and that is having a parade with the competing bands in a parade prior to the competition that night,” Grant said. “They’ll be in a parade down Main Street here in Atlanta. And then that night they’ll be cued up to be in actual championship mode. So we do see that being a part of it. Creating our own Tournament of Roses parade, so to speak.”

ATLANTA – The inaugural ESPN “Band of The Year” competition could be described many ways, but the best term may have been “organized chaos.” That’s to be expected for a first-of-its-kind event that was band competition-meets-football-game-meets corporate-check cashing showcase.

Four HBCU bands filed into the cavernous Mercedes-Benz Stadium in downtown Atlanta looking to bring home one of two national titles. But none of them did.

The inaugural “Band of the Year” winners for both Division I and Division II were not crowned on Friday night. Instead the result will be announced during Saturday’s broadcast of its ESPN Events parent event – the Celebration Bowl. That announcement was made after two hours of performances on the field and an endless array of check presentations to the four bands who made it to the turf over dozens of others.

A rumbling of murmurs rolled through the crowd once the announcement that the postponement of the announcement of the winners rolled through the loudspeakers.

North Carolina A&T’s Blue and Gold Marching Machine, vying for the Division I title against Jackson State’s Sonic Boom of the South, issued what appeared to be a response to the ruling. The band had already had its “Fifth Quarter” stands performance after the official competition, and was told to load onto its busses. Instead, the BGMM broke out into another song, provoking the Sonic Boom to prepare an impromptu response of its own.

Officials quickly shut that down, reiterating that the bands needed to get to their busses as instructed and that the next band would be docked 30 points on their performance.

“Don’t even think about it,” barked Don Roberts, one of the organizers of the ESPN Band of the Year and a long-time fixture in the Atlanta band world.

Both A&T and Jackson State, as well as the Virginia State “Trojan Explosion” and “The Roar” from Florida Memorial – will have to wait with the rest of the world to see who will bring home the hardware as the judges tabulate the scores.

Fans and bands were politely but firmly ushered out of the dome as preparations had to get underway for the Celebration Bowl, which was set to kick off in just over 15 hours.

As the stadium workers prepared to work into the night to make the magic happen, spectators filed out of the stadium and onto the concourse of the dome with anxious energy and a tinge of bewilderment at the course of events.

North Carolina A&T, ESPN Band of The Year

A group of North Carolina A&T supporters expressed a mix of excitement and confusion after witnessing the event – particularly with no announcement of winners.

“I mean, some of us are coming to Celebration Bowl but other people aren’t,” one Aggie supporter in a letter jacket shared.

“Facts,” a gentleman with a BGMM (Blue and Gold Marching Machine) shirt interjected. “It’s anticlimactic.”

“And none of the bands are performing at the Celebration Bowl so…

“They bout to go home tomorrow,” a friend added.

“Yeah, so they’re going to find out through social media,” she concluded.

“For an inaugural event – It was quite special,” Barry Harrison said. “Still trying to work out the mechanics of the judging. But the four bands were all excellent in their own way. They all known for their own particular stylings and musicianship. But it was it was quite an event, quite an event. And I’m glad I made the trip from New Orleans to be here to see it.”

Harrison proudly wore a vintage Southern University letterman’s jacket. He revealed he was a percussionist for the marching band under the tutelage of legendary band director Dr. Issac Greggs. Even though his beloved Human Jukebox didn’t make the cut this round, he still felt the need to come support the ESPN Band of The Year.

“Well, when you when you reach a certain age and a certain level, you just want to see all of us succeed. So like I said, I came all the way from New Orleans,” Harrison continued. “I have come here before for the Honda. I’ve come for the Heritage Bowl. I’ve come for the Pioneer Bowl between the CIAA and SIAC. And I’m just that HBCU guy who just would like to see all of us succeed.”

Now it is set to compete for an HBCU national title in Atlanta.

The Florida Memorial University Band, known as ‘The Roar,’ is set to introduce itself to the HBCU world this week when it hits the ‘Band of the Year’ competition.

That’s quite an accomplishment for a 116-member band that is less than half a decade old.

The journey began four years ago when Dr. Jaffus Hardrick approached Dr. Richard Beckwith with the idea of starting a band alongside the football program he was planning.

“Our president had a vision four years ago to start a bad program when he wanted to bring football to the university. And in our long history, we’ve never had a band program that was established here,” Beckwith told HBCU Gameday. “I was honored that he selected me or interacted with me to get the position. However, this has been like a baby that had to be born. Once we gave birth to the program, the opportunity to just put Florida Memorial and South Florida on the map was, I think, in our hands.”

“And for us to have grown in the four years that we’ve been here to what we’re doing now and to even be recognized by the organization is a great honor. I’ve seen people come up and cry at games because they never expected Florida Memorial to get this kind of notoriety. And we’re very, very grateful as a bandstand to be able to bring this kind of attention to South Florida and to our university.”

It wasn’t easy. The first football season was set for 2020 – which brought along the COVID-19 pandemic. FMU was the only HBCU to play football that season, playing a handful of games before being shut down.

The band continued to improve out of the purview of many in the HBCU world. Florida Memorial University competes in football at the NAIA level, and only faces a handful of HBCUs per year because of that. Even when the Band of The Year concept was announced, there wasn’t much of a buzz about FloMo, but the proof was in the rankings.

FMU ranked second in September, turning heads with its selection over marching bands in the Division II/NAIA category with much more extensive history. It maintained top three status in each of the the three months. Co-Chair Dowell Taylor, Band Director Emeritus at Jackson State University, talked about what impressed him the most.

Florida Memorial University, Band of The Year

“I was impressed with their mannerisms, the way they carried themselves, the way they handled their instrument carriage, the way they handled their total body form,” Taylor told HBCU Gameday. “And I was very impressed with the fact that everybody was in tune with each other. Everybody knew, and I recall seeing some adjusted steps in some of your maneuvers. I saw some curvilinear forms in your maneuvers.”

Florida Memorial will be competing against one of the oldest HBCU bands, Virginia State University, for the national title at the D2/NAIA level. Whatever happens, Dr. Beckwith is proud of what his band has accomplished in such a short amount of time.

“From the day that I was handed the position, we declared that one day we were going to be amongst the best,” he said. “Like we literally said it in the interview, and I’m just grateful for the opportunity to be able to actually showcase what we’re doing more than anything.

And I’m grateful to God for, you know, the prophecy and just being able to speak it out, walk in it every day and tell the students every day, listen, do it the right way, do it with integrity. Go hard every single time, show your your effort and good things will come. So this is a manifestation.”

The Band of The Year competition is set for Dec. 15 in Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

The post Band of The Year 2023 Finalists Announced appeared first on HBCU Gameday.

]]>
After months of anticipation and intrigue, the Fabulous Four have been chosen for the inaugural ESPN Band of The Year to award the top HBCU marching bands in Division I and Division II/NAIA.

The two finalists at the Division II level are Florida Memorial’s “The Roar” Marching Band and Virginia State University’s “Trojan Explosion.”

The two finalists at the Division I level are the North Carolina A&T “Blue and Gold Marching Machine” and the Jackson State University “Sonic Boom of the South.”

The four institutions were extended invites on Monday evening after being among the ten marching bands considered, five at each level. All four bands finished ranked in the top two in their respective categories, but the Band of The Year committee needed to make sure that the bands would get the support they needed from their institutions. All four confirmed support from their administration, including housing the students over part of what is traditionally winter break.

North Carolina A&T and Jackson State University are no strangers to the national stage as both have performed in Mercedes-Benz Stadium in the Celebration Bowl. NC A&T in 2017-2019 and Jackson State in 2021 and 2022.

Jackson State University Director of Bands Dr. Roderick Little says Atlanta is also a heavy contributor to the Sonic Boom.

“Atlanta is a hotbed for us, I would dare to say probably in the 50 percent, maybe a little bit over of the students that we get in our program are from Atlanta,” Dr. Little said. “We have a large alumni base there. And so they are always seeking an opportunity to see their band program. We always like to have an opportunity to go and perform for them as well.”

Florida Memorial, The Roar

It’s a different story for the bands in the Division II/NAIA category.

Virginia State University hasn’t performed in Atlanta in quite some time, and Director of Bands Dr. Taylor Whitehead is ecstatic about the opportunity.

“Too often and this is why even Mr. Grant, that I’m just excited that Division two bands were considered for this, because most people only consider Division one bands to be the good bands,” Dr. Whitehead said. “However, my band director, Earl Horton, long ago told me it wasn’t about the quantity, it was about the quality. And so we deliver on that promise that while we might lack in numbers, we promise that we will still compete with the best of them from a quality standpoint. And that’s what we’ve focused on all year long.”

And then there is Florida Memorial. Not only is it the smallest band in the field – it is the newest HBCU Marching Band. The program debuted in 2020 as the school launched its football program that fall before the season was cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Richard Beckford has been at the helm since the beginning and he was ecstatic to find out his program would be featured in the the Band of The Year competition.

“Once we gave birth to the program, the opportunity to just put Florida Memorial and South Florida on the map was, I think, in our hands,” Dr. Beckford said. “And for us to have grown in the four years that we’ve been here to what we’re doing now and to even be recognized by the organization is a great honor. I’ve seen people come up and cry at games because they never expected for more to get this kind of notoriety. And we’re very, very grateful as a bandstand to be able to bring this kind of attention to South Florida and to our university.”

The ESPN Band of The Year title will be determined Dec. 15 in the Mercedes-Benz Dome in Atlanta, GA with the show starting at 6 PM EST. It will be simulcast on ESPN3 and ESPN Plus.

Performances are judged on an individual basis, with judges giving scores for specific areas only. Bands are encouraged to submit a performance to be judged monthly. The committee is co-chaired by Jackson State Director of Bands Emeritus, Professor Dowell Taylor, and Dr. Julian E. White, FAMU Director of Bands Emeritus.

The November ranking will list the top five in each division. The final ranking will award the top two teams in each division a shot at the ESPN Band of The Year title, which will be determined Dec. 15 in the Mercedes-Benz Dome in Atlanta, GA with the show starting at 6 PM EST. It will be simulcast on ESPN3 and ESPN Plus.

Homecoming at North Carolina A&T – better known as GHOE – is right around the corner. That means hundreds of alumni from A&T’s Blue and Gold Marching Machine will be returning to reconnect with the program that holds some of its fondest memories.

While in years past this may have included dropping in on rehearsals or joining the band on the track – that won’t be the case this year. A recent communication dropped by North Carolina A&T Director of Bands Dr. Kenneth Ruff outlined some changes they wanted alumni aware of.

For starters, the band room will be closed for all rehearsals.

“The band is significantly larger as you know. There is no room for additional people in the space. The staff is also bigger. There is no space in the office for additional people.”

The memo also made it clear that there is no entering into Truist Stadium with the marching band.

“There is no entrance into the stadium with the band. To enter the stadium with the band, the band and staff must be in full uniform. Staff must also have their athletic sanctioned credentials.”

We all know folks will attempt to finesse their way onto the track. But the memo makes it clear there is a ‘no-hook up’ policy.

“Please do not ask any member of the staff to get you “on the track. That area is closed to only credentialed personnel. The staff is not allowed to grant access for that.”

This apparent change in policy, or more solid enforcement of the policy. It is in line with a recent attempt to cut down on the number of people on the sidelines and track at the stadium that saw the creation of the North Carolina A&T Gameday Ambassador program for former players.

“Enjoy the game and the band from your seats in the stadium,” Dr. Ruff wrote. “Please do not use your relationships and loyalty to ask staff to do things that are against what the university and university band program is requesting. We love you all and appreciate the alumni that assist when asked. That is much appreciated, however, assist without expectation. Let’s have a safe and fun homecoming.”
