Salisbury, NC | Livingstone College opened its first Home Depot Innovations Lounge on March 26 in the W. J. Walls Student Center. Livingstone President Dr. Anthony J. Davis welcomed HBCU students into the new space, which was the College’s former student center. The space is outfitted with new furniture and technology and has dedicated spaces for student collaboration.

“I am moved, truly moved to see the students here today…this is what it’s all about,” Davis said. “On the campus of Livingstone College, one of the things that we are definitely being intentional about is making sure that our students are our first priority.”

One of Few

According to Dr. Orlando Lewis, Livingstone’s Vice President for Student Affairs, “this is the first year that Home Depot offered its student innovation lounge program grant. We were one of a few colleges to receive it.” The $59,000 grant included $34,000
for renovations – including new flooring, doors, and freshly painted walls – and a $25,000 furniture package.

This is not the first time the HBCU has received funding from Home Depot’s “Retool Your School” program grant. In 2018, the college received $30,000 to renovate its campus pavilion and another $30,000 in 2021 to develop and implement a high-profile Podcast
Café, the first of its kind in the State of North Carolina.

Lewis added that this year’s grant guarantees student internships and scholarships, providing them with opportunities for growth and learning. “This will become a lounge for students to innovate, ideate, and collaborate,” Lewis said.

The space also features a commissioned mural painted by artist Phillip Osborne to represent all sides of the student experience at Livingstone.

“I just wanted to embody the many different elements within the innovation center as well as the college itself,” said Osborne, who incorporated some of the most important experiences of HBCU student life: academics, football, civic engagement, Greek life,
and extracurricular activities.

Former Livingstone sprinter Quanera Hayes has added another world championship to her resume. The former HBCU standout at Livingstone College won a world championship in the women’s 4x400m relay at the World Athletics Indoor Championships Nanjing 25.

The event began as a competitive race but quickly turned into a showcase of dominance by the United States. The American quartet of Quanera Hayes, Bailey Lear, Rosey Effiong, and Alexis Holmes stormed to victory, securing the final gold medal of the championships with a commanding time of 3:27.45 — nearly five seconds ahead of their closest competitors.

Poland, which briefly led after the opening leg, claimed the silver medal in 3:32.05, while Australia, competing in this event at the World Indoors for the first time since 1999, took bronze.

USA Takes Control After Early Challenge

Poland’s Justyna Swiety Ersetic, the most experienced member of her squad, gave her team an early lead with an impressive 52.18 split on the opening leg, narrowly edging out Hayes. However, Lear quickly erased that deficit, handing over to Effiong with the USA in control.

Effiong widened the gap before passing the baton to 400m silver medallist Alexis Holmes, a proven anchor leg specialist in major championships. Holmes delivered a strong 51.47 split to seal the victory for Team USA.

Podium Finishers and Host Nation’s Effort

Behind the dominant Americans, Poland held on for second place, while Australia’s impressive return to the event resulted in a well-deserved bronze. The home crowd cheered loudly as China fought valiantly to secure a fourth-place finish.

Holmes Reflects on Team Chemistry and Success

“We’ve been running with each other since college, so we definitely know each other well,” Holmes said after the race. “We don’t get to see each other much during the year, but every time we come together, the goal is to win. That’s the highlight of the week for sure — another medal for Team USA.”

With this emphatic performance, the United States capped off the championships on a high note, reinforcing their dominance on the global stage.

Quanera Hayes is an accomplished American sprinter specializing in the 400 meters. As an HBCU runner in the CIAA at Livingstone College she was a 12-time NCAA All-American and a four-time National Champion in the 200 and 400 meter dashes. She rose to international prominence by winning gold in the 4x400m relay at the 2017 World Championships and securing bronze in the individual 400m at the 2016 World Indoor Championships.

Hayes claimed the 400m title at the 2021 U.S. Olympic Trials, earning a spot at the Tokyo Olympics, where she helped Team USA secure gold in the 4x400m relay. Known for her consistency and strong finishes, Hayes has been a key contributor to the U.S. relay success on the world stage and remains a top competitor in her discipline, showcasing the talents that were developed at her HBCU.

]]>
SALISBURY, NC – Livingstone College has received another transformative $10 million donation, marking the second such megagift in less than a year for the North Carolina HBCU. President Dr. Anthony Davis announced that the anonymous benefactor, who contributed $10 million last summer, has once again invested in the institution’s future. The funds will continue supporting the “Miracle on Monroe Street” construction initiative.

The latest gift will allow Livingstone College to advance to phase three of its renovation efforts, which include upgrades to Goler Hall and Honors Hall.

“We are humbled that Livingstone received a philanthropic investment of this nature, which will enable us to provide environmentally sensitive residential spaces for our students,” Davis said.

Goler Hall, Livingstone College, HBCU
Goler Hall is one of the most historic buildings on Livingstone College’s campus.

As HBCUs navigate the challenges of fluctuating federal funding, private investments have become essential for sustaining and expanding these institutions. Livingstone’s recent gift is the second-largest outright donation in the college’s history and follows a $3 million contribution announced in January. These philanthropic commitments reinforce the institution’s ability to enhance campus infrastructure and academic opportunities.

Under Davis’ leadership, Livingstone College is approaching $40 million in private gifts raised over the past two fiscal years. This financial momentum has coincided with a significant rise in student enrollment, with the college experiencing a 13% increase this academic year—outpacing even its public HBCU counterparts across the state.

These investments position Livingstone College to continue thriving as an HBCU on the rise, ensuring that future generations of students have access to high-quality facilities and educational experiences.

SALISBURY, NC — Livingstone College, a private HBCU in Salisbury, NC, is starting off 2025 like it did 2024.

President Dr. Anthony J. Davis revealed in a speech to his faculty and staff that its anonymous donor from previous gifts has added a new one.

“Over the vacation — over the paid time off — I received notification that Livingstone College will kick off this academic year with another anonymous gift from our anonymous donor to the tune of $3 million,” Davis told the school’s faculty and staff.

The money will be used for capital renovation projects on the campus, including renovating its cafeteria and multiple residence halls. The school said, unofficially, that it has received $23 million from the donor over the course of the fiscal year, including a $10 million gift in July.

“We don’t receive philanthropy at this level because of a president who gets up and makes an eloquent speech,” Davis told his faculty and staff. “This happens because all of you have been committed to this miracle approach. It’s because of the work that you’re doing, and it’s making us the fastest growing HBCU in North Carolina.”

Dr. Davis touted the university’s 13 percent growth number which would eclipse North Carolina Central’s highest growth number amongst the state’s five public HBCUs. Livingstone is one of five private HBCUs in the state, and is the only private one in the midst of a comprehensive campus revitalization project.

“Which means that the world is watching,” Dr. Davis said. “ World wants to know. — ‘wait a minute, Livingstone? They’re getting philanthropic contributions like Morehouse and Spelman. We are. It’s because of the work that you’re doing.”

The AME Zion-backed HBCU is looking at slow growth, Davis told the media afterwards.

“When we talk about slow control growth, it’s about capacity,” Dr. Davis said. “We could not function above 1200 students right now, physically on campus. So right now we’re at 941. We’re almost close to capacity.”

The 2024 football season in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) thrilled fans with a showcase of talent. This talent came from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). The season featured standout performances. Records were broken. There were unexpected twists. It highlighted the strength and competitiveness of HBCU football programs within the CIAA. Here’s a comprehensive team-by-team evaluation, incorporating key statistics, notable games, and standout players.

Virginia Union University (Grade: A+)

  • Preseason Rank: 2nd
  • Final Standing: 1st (6-1 conference, 7-3 overall)
  • Offensive Ranking: 1st in Total Offense (479.4 yards/game, 61 TDs)
  • Defensive Ranking: 4th in Total Defense (295.2 yards/game, 22 TDs allowed)

Highlights:

  • Jada Byers, the CIAA Offensive Player of the Year, dominated the field, amassing 1,497 rushing yards and 23 touchdowns. He set school records with 5,311 career rushing yards and 70 touchdowns. This includes a single-game record of 324 yards and six touchdowns against Bowie State.
  • Virginia Union clinched the CIAA Championship, defeating Virginia State in a decisive victory.
  • The Panthers secured a spot in the NCAA Division II playoffs, representing HBCUs on the national stage.
  • VUU’s loss to Johnson C. Smith University (JCSU), did not count as conference defeats due to CIAA scheduling rules impacted by St. Augustine’s absence from football this year.

Summary: Virginia Union showcased exceptional prowess on both offense and defense, leading the CIAA. This reinforced its status as a powerhouse among HBCU football programs.

JCSU, CIAA, HBCU Gameday
Johnson C. Smith started the season hot but ended ice cold.

Johnson C. Smith University (Grade: A)

  • Preseason Rank: 4th
  • Final Standing: 2nd (5-2conference, 8-2 overall)
  • Offensive Ranking: 3rd in Total Offense (378.4 yards/game, 32 TDs)
  • Defensive Ranking: 1st in Total Defense (246.2 yards/game, 17 TDs allowed)

Highlights:

  • Head Coach Maurice Flowers was named CIAA Coach of the Year after leading the Golden Bulls to an impressive season.
  • Benari Black, the CIAA Defensive Player of the Year, led a stout defense with 113 tackles. He spearheaded the top-ranked defense in the conference.
  • JCSU achieved significant victories over Tuskegee and Morehouse from the SIAC, and delivered Virginia Union their only on-field CIAA loss.
  • Despite their strong performance, they suffered a crucial conference loss to Fayetteville State.

Summary: JCSU exceeded preseason expectations. They solidified their reputation within the CIAA and HBCU football. The team combined a formidable defense with strategic coaching. This made them one of the season’s standout teams.

Virginia State University (Grade: B)

  • Preseason Rank: 1st
  • Final Standing: 3rd (6-1 conference, 7-4 overall)
  • Offensive Ranking: 2nd in Total Offense (385.7 yards/game, 43 TDs)
  • Defensive Ranking: 2nd in Total Defense (283.5 yards/game, 19 TDs allowed)

Highlights:

  • The Trojans secured a notable win against Benedict from the SIAC.
  • Bruno Onwuazor earned CIAA Lineman of the Year, contributing to an offense that averaged 6.3 yards per play.
  • Defensive Rookie of the Year, Marquis Edmond, bolstered an already strong defense.
  • Virginia State’s only victory over a team with a winning record was against Benedict, limiting their impact against top-tier opponents.

Summary: Virginia State showed statistical strength. However, they fell short in securing wins against leading teams within the CIAA. This impacted their overall grade. This happened despite their perfect conference record adjusted by CIAA rules.

HBCU fans are watching closely as the 2024 CIAA football season enters its final stretch. The race for the championship is down to the wire as Johnson C. Smith, Virginia Union and Virginia State position themselves for a spot in the CIAA Championship Game. With only two weeks left, the stakes are higher than ever, and every game counts.

The Top Contenders

Johnson C. Smith has put together a flawless season so far, boasting an 8-0 record overall and 5-0 in the CIAA. They’ve claimed wins over the conference’s top teams, including Virginia Union, Virginia State, and Winston-Salem State. However, their victory over Virginia Union was not counted as a conference game, which leaves Virginia Union technically undefeated in the CIAA as well.

Virginia Union, currently 5-0 in conference play and 6-2 overall, is hot on Johnson C. Smith’s heels. They’ve also displayed strength, particularly with a key win over Winston-Salem State. Their final regular-season matchup is against Virginia State, a game with massive implications for both teams.

Virginia State stands at 4-1 in the CIAA, with a 5-3 overall record. It faced Winston-Salem State but took a loss in a game that didn’t impact its conference standings. This gives Virginia State an extra boost in their run for the title. Their season-ender against Virginia Union will be one of the most anticipated games of the season, as both teams are fighting for a top-two finish.

Winston-Salem State is not technically out of contention with a 4-2 conference record and a 6-3 overall record. While it has had a strong season, a recent loss has put them just a step behind the top three contenders. It would need the three teams ahead of it to end the season with two conference losses as its win at Virginia State earlier in the season didn’t count as a loss for VSU.

Remaining Challenges and Final Games

Johnson C. Smith faces Fayetteville State next, a team with a strong championship history, having been a staple in the CIAA Championship Game for the past few seasons. This could be Johnson C. Smith’s toughest game yet, as Fayetteville State is known for delivering under high-stakes situations. After that, Johnson C. Smith closes their regular season against Livingstone in a classic rivalry game that could add one final twist to their undefeated run.

Johnson C. Smith, HBCU Gameday, CIAA

For Virginia Union and Virginia State, their season-ending showdown could be a de facto playoff. If both teams maintain their records, this game will likely decide who earns a championship slot. The potential for an intense battle adds further excitement to an already competitive season.

CIAA Championship Hopes on the Line

As the 2024 CIAA season races toward its conclusion, these HBCU teams are each pushing to secure their place in the championship. With only two spots available, every play, every drive, and every game could shape the final outcome. While Johnson C. Smith and Virginia Union are currently in control, the unpredictable nature of college football means that anything can happen in these final weeks.

Whoever prevails will not only earn the CIAA title but also bring pride to their HBCU, representing the top level of talent and competition in the conference.

SALISBURY, NC —Winston-Salem State (WSSU) traveled 40 minutes down I-85 and made itself at home at its nearby HBCU rival, beating Livingstone College 31-17 on Saturday at Alumni Memorial Stadium.

WSSU’s defense dominated Livingstone, forcing three turnovers and holding its run game to just 64 yards on 33 attempts.

The game kicked off with Winston-Salem State scoring first, as Trevon Hester’s 1-yard touchdown run capped a brief two-play drive following an 83 yard punt return, putting WSSU up 7-0. Livingstone responded late in the first quarter when De’Angelo Alston connected with Davontay Deloatch for a 10-yard touchdown pass, tying the game at 7.

Winston-Salem State pulled ahead in the second quarter, with Gilberto Lorenzana nailing a 36-yard field goal, followed by a 35-yard touchdown pass from Daylin Lee to Kaleb Washington, giving the Rams a 17-7 lead at halftime.

In the third quarter, Livingstone managed to close the gap with a 31-yard field goal by Jason Zapata, but Winston-Salem State’s defense stepped up. Dante Bowlding’s 18-yard interception return for a touchdown pushed WSSU’s lead to 24-10.

The Rams’ offensive line dominated the fourth quarter with a grinding 13-play, 68-yard drive, culminating in a 1-yard touchdown run by Lee, sealing the game at 31-10. Livingstone managed a late touchdown, but it wasn’t enough to change the outcome.

The win gives WSSU a 6-2 record overall, and 4-1 in CIAA play, securing the first winning season since 2018 for the HBCU program. That moves it into third place in the CIAA behind Virginia Union and Johnson C. Smith. WSSU is set to host JCSU next Saturday in a game that could help determine who makes it to Salem, VA for the CIAA title game.

HBCU Football: Livingstone College vs. Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) Preview (2024)

Series Overview:

  • Series Record: Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) leads the all-time series 47-14-1 over Livingstone College.
  • Location: The two NC HBCU schools are located roughly 40 minutes apart.
  • Current Streak: Livingstone has won the last two contests
  • Next Matchup: Set for October 19., 2024, this game continues a rivalry that dates back decades, with WSSU holding a dominant position in the series.

Livingstone College (2024 Season so far):

  • Record: 5-2 overall, 3-1 in the CIAA.
  • Offensive Output:
  • Livingstone has been competitive, scoring 146 points (20.86 per game), just shy of their opponents’ 149 points.
  • Their rushing attack is balanced, led by Mohamed Nyanamukenga, who has 575 rushing yards and averages 95.83 yards per game.
  • The Blue Bears have also thrown for 1,042 yards and 9 passing TDs but have thrown 8 interceptions, a point of concern.
  • Defensive Performance:
  • The defense has tallied 20 sacks on the season and has been effective in forcing turnovers, with 11 interceptions.
  • The special teams have been a bright spot with a 13.57-yard punt return average, but the team has struggled with a low third-down conversion rate (27.08%)

Winston-Salem State University

  • Record: 5-2 overall, 3-1 in the CIAA.
  • Offensive Strength:
  • WSSU has scored 163 points (23.29 per game), outscoring their opponents by nearly a touchdown per game
  • The ground game is led by Trevon Hester, with 638 rushing yards and 4 touchdowns, averaging 91.14 yards per game.
  • Quarterback Daylin Lee has been efficient, passing for 1,231 yards with 9 TDs against only 3 interceptions, contributing to an average of 177.43 passing yards per game.
  • Defensive Performance:
  • WSSU’s defense has allowed only 116 points over seven games, averaging 16.57 points allowed per game.
  • The Rams have been opportunistic, forcing 9 interceptions and recording 12 sacks, while limiting opposing quarterbacks to just 5.75 yards per attempt.
  • Key playmakers include Justin Fleming, who has 53 tackles and 3 interceptions, including a pick-six.

Key Matchups to Watch:

  • Livingstone’s Offense vs. WSSU’s Defense:
  • Livingstone’s rushing attack will face a stiff test against a WSSU defense allowing just 123.6 rushing yards per game. Can Nyanamukenga continue his strong season against a disciplined Rams front?
  • On the other side, Livingstone’s pass protection will need to neutralize WSSU’s pass rush, which has accumulated 12 sacks so far
  • WSSU’s Rushing Attack vs. Livingstone’s Defense:
  • WSSU’s Trevon Hester will look to exploit Livingstone’s defense, which has allowed 871 rushing yards. If Hester gets going early, it could be a long day for the Blue Bear.

Prediction:

With both teams entering the game at 5-2 and evenly matched within the CIAA, WSSU holds the edge due to its historical dominance and more balanced team performance. If Livingstone’s defense can force turnovers and keep the game close, it could pull an upset, but WSSU’s firepower and more consistent play may prove too much in this HBCU matchup.

Final Score Prediction: WSSU 28, Livingstone 17.

HBCU Livingstone College made a historic statement on by defeating Fayetteville State 24-19 at Alumni Memorial Stadium for its annual homecoming game. The win snapped a seven-game losing streak to the Broncos.

Livingstone College’s defense played a pivotal role, highlighted by Jayden Reeder’s 77-yard interception return for a touchdown late in the first half. That score, combined with a strong ground game led by Mohamed Nyanamukenga’s 101 rushing yards, helped secure the victory. Quarterback De’Angelo Alston contributed a 36-yard touchdown pass to Davontay Deloatch and added a rushing touchdown of his own in the third quarter.

The win for Livingstone College likely ends Fayetteville State’s hopes of making the CIAA Championship for the seventh consecutive season. FSU struggled offensively, throwing four interceptions and missing key opportunities, including a blocked field goal in the second half. The game ended with back-to-back interceptions thrown by Demari Daniels. The final minute-and-a-half resulted in multiple kneel downs, multiple unsportsmanlike penalties and a 4th and 56 from Livingstone that resulted in a safety for the final score.

For Livingstone College, this win solidifies its resurgence in CIAA football and reinforces its reputation within HBCU sports. Livingstone’s passionate crowd of 3,579 fans celebrated as its team re-wrote a chapter in their rivalry with Fayetteville State, potentially signaling a new era for it.

Livingstone’s triumph puts it at 5-2 overall and 3-1 in the CIAA, while Fayetteville State falls to 3-3 overall and 2-2 in CIAA play. That is the best start for Livingstone since 2014.

LC will host nearby Winston-Salem State — which has an identical record — on October 19.

The upcoming 2024 HBCU homecoming matchup between Livingstone College (4-2) and Fayetteville State University (3-2) promises to be a competitive CIAA contest based on the teams’ cumulative stats.

Offensive Matchup:

  • Livingstone College averages 275.8 total yards per game, balanced between 133.8 rushing yards and 142 passing yards. Mohamed Nyanamukenga leads their ground game, averaging 95.4 rushing yards per game. Quarterback Zorian Wallace is efficient, with a completion percentage of 58.3% and 389 passing yards over four games, supported by a receiving corps led by Angel Carrillo and Chris Washington.
  • Fayetteville State averages 323.8 total yards per game, with a slight edge in passing (223.2 yards) over rushing (100.6 yards). Joe Owens is the primary quarterback, throwing for 694 yards and four touchdowns, with David Baros as a key target, averaging 66.6 yards per game.

Defensive Matchup:

  • Livingstone’s defense has shown resilience, allowing 275.3 yards per game and recording 15 sacks. Their defense is led by Davion Watkins, who has tallied 4.5 sacks and 10.5 tackles for loss, while Kevin Larkins Jr. has contributed an interception return for 16 yards.
  • Fayetteville State’s defense is slightly more porous, allowing 317.8 yards per game but excelling in sacks with 12 on the season. Shi Gaskin has been particularly effective with four sacks and 8.5 tackles for loss.

Special Teams:

  • Livingstone College has a solid kicking game, with Jason Zapata hitting 9 of 11 field goals, including a long of 49 yards. Chancellor Bryant also contributes on punt returns, averaging 16.2 yards per return, including a 50-yard touchdown.
  • Fayetteville State has John Hernandez-Vargas, who has made 6 of 8 field goals with a long of 43 yards. Their special teams unit also features a reliable return game, with Anthony Greene averaging 19.71 yards per kick return.

Key Storylines:

  • Both teams feature strong defenses capable of creating pressure, but the battle may come down to which offense can protect the ball better. Fayetteville State has thrown 4 interceptions this season compared to Livingstone’s 8, potentially giving FSU an edge in turnover battles.
  • Livingstone’s ability to control the clock with its run game, powered by Nyanamukenga, will be a key factor against Fayetteville State’s balanced attack.

This matchup between HBCU squads and contending rivals could hinge on field position, turnovers, and big plays in the special teams and defensive units. Livingstone is off to a 4-2 start, its best start in a decade. Meanwhile, Fayetteville State is off to its worst start since 2017. Expect a tightly contested battle, with both teams looking to build momentum in the second half of the season.

Livingstone College pulled off a close 15-14 win against Lincoln University in an exciting HBCU football game at Lincoln University Football Stadium in Pennsylvania. The matchup showcased strong defenses, with key plays and special teams making all the difference.

The game started with Lincoln University scoring first. Quarterback Isaiah Freeman threw a big 69-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Eli Riddick, putting Lincoln ahead 7-3 early on. It looked like it would be an offensive battle, but Livingstone’s defense quickly adjusted, making important stops and forcing turnovers that kept Lincoln from scoring again.

While Lincoln struggled to move the ball, Livingstone’s kicker, Jason Zapata, became the team’s star player. He kicked three important field goals from 34, 27, and 29 yards, helping Livingstone stay in the game. His final kick in the third quarter gave Livingstone a 15-14 lead. Zorian Wallace also threw a touchdown pass to Chris Brown, marking Livingstone’s only offensive touchdown, which turned out to be the game-winner.

On the defensive side, Lincoln’s Jahad Green made seven tackles and applied constant pressure on Livingstone’s offense. However, Livingstone’s defense made a key stop late in the game, preventing Lincoln from converting on a crucial fourth down. This stop sealed the win for Livingstone and ended Lincoln’s chance for a comeback.

This game between the two HBCU teams showed the determination and talent of both squads. Lincoln University’s close loss added to a tough season as it continues to look for its first win. On the other hand, Livingstone College improved to 3-2 and hopes to build on this momentum. Both teams fought hard, but Livingstone’s ability to take advantage of special teams and make critical defensive stops ultimately made the difference.

The Olympics have come to an end, and one HBCU graduate has her first Olympic gold medal as a part of Team USA.

Quanera Hayes won a gold medal as part of Team USA’s victory in the 4x400m women’s relay. Hayes ran a 51.27 split on the first leg to help the team advance to the gold medal round.

Her journey to international success began at Livingstone College, a Historically Black College and University (HBCU) in Salisbury, North Carolina. During her time at Livingstone, Hayes showcased her exceptional talent, becoming a standout performer in the CIAA (Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association) and earning multiple conference titles.

Hayes’ dominance on the track at the collegiate level paved the way for her professional career. After graduating from Livingstone, she transitioned smoothly into the professional circuit, quickly making her mark. She won her first U.S. National Championship in 2017, establishing herself as one of the top 400-meter runners in the country.

She qualified for the Tokyo Olympics by winning the U.S. Olympic Trials in the 400 meters, edging out Alyison Felix. She finished seventh at the Olympics in Tokyo.

Throughout her career, Quanera Hayes has been an inspiration, especially to young athletes from HBCUs. Her success has highlighted the competitive opportunities at HBCUs and underscored the ability of these institutions to develop world-class athletes. Hayes continues to be a prominent figure in track and field, representing the strength, resilience, and excellence of HBCU athletes on the global stage. And now she has a gold medal from the Paris Olympics.

ATLANTA –Dr. Anthony J. Davis Sr., President of Livingstone College, talked about everything from sports betting money for his private HBCU to his school’s newly-announced donation in a recent trip to the HBCU Gameday studios. This significant contribution, from an anonymous donor, stands as one of the largest outright gifts to any private HBCU in North Carolina.

Dr. Davis highlighted the importance of stewardship in securing such gifts, stating that the most recent gift was the latest in a series from the same donor. He also emphasized that all of the money reported has been deposited.

“We would not have received additional gifts had we not been good stewards with the first million,” he stated, emphasizing the donor’s continued faith in Livingstone College’s vision. He noted that the money had been received and processed.

This vision includes comprehensive improvements to student housing, the cafeteria, and overall campus infrastructure, marking a new era for the institution.

Dr. Davis addressed a pressing issue facing private HBCUs in North Carolina: access to state gambling funds for athletics. Public institutions in the state (including Elizabeth City, Fayetteville State and Winston-Salem State) benefit from substantial allocations from sports betting revenues, a privilege not extended to private HBCUs like Livingstone College as well as Johnson C. Smith, Shaw University and Saint Augustine’s University. Davis is pushing back on that.

“They’ll give every state school in the CIAA a million dollars from the lottery money, but they say the privates can’t participate,” he noted, calling for equitable treatment from state legislators.

Dr. Davis pointed out that a significant portion of Livingstone’s student body hails from North Carolina, making them constituents deserving of similar support. HBCU Gameday’s reporting on the matter underscores the disparity in funding and the need for policy changes to ensure all HBCUs can thrive.

Athletics also play a pivotal role at Livingstone College, with nearly half of the student population participating in sports. Dr. Davis expressed his commitment to enhancing the athletic program, focusing not just on wins and losses but on maintaining a competitive spirit.

“My challenge to him [Coach Sean Gilbert] is to put a competitive product on the field,” he said, underscoring the broader impact of athletics on school spirit and community engagement.

Another significant change under Dr. Davis’s leadership has been the implementation of a fee for alumni to enter the campus during homecoming last fall. Initially met with resistance, this initiative has proven successful in enhancing the overall homecoming experience.

“After alumni had the opportunity to see it and experience it, they said, ‘Wow, we needed to pay more,'” Dr. Davis shared.

The fee helps manage the influx of visitors and ensures that the campus remains clean and safe, contributing to a more organized and enjoyable homecoming for everyone, Dr. Davis explained. This approach also generated additional revenue, further supporting the college’s operational needs.

GREENSBORO, NC – Livingstone College, a historic HBCU in Salisbury, NC, announced it has recently received a transformative $10 million donation from an anonymous benefactor. This latest contribution brings the total donations from this donor to $17 million in just six months, marking a significant milestone in the college’s history. The announcement was made by Dr. Anthony J. Davis, President of Livingstone College, who expressed his gratitude and outlined the impact of this generous gift.

“This is an incredible moment for Livingstone College,” said Dr. Davis. “Our anonymous donor has truly believed in our mission and the transformative power of education. This $10 million donation will ensure that we can complete phase one of our construction projects and move directly into phase two, all from a debt-free position.”

The $10 million donation will significantly advance the college’s construction projects, ensuring that phase one can be completed and phase two can commence without incurring debt. This aligns with the college’s goal to improve living conditions for students and attract top scholars to its campus. Dr. Davis highlighted the success of Livingstone College in changing its ecosystem and elevating its academic profile, boasting an incoming class of 114 presidential scholars with GPAs between 3.7 and 4.0, and another 85 students with GPAs between 3.0 and 3.6.

Previously, Livingstone College received multiple $1 million donations from the same anonymous donor, which have been instrumental in supporting various campus projects and initiatives. The first donation was received during the college’s homecoming celebrations, and subsequent contributions followed during key events, reflecting the donor’s ongoing commitment to the institution’s growth and success.

Dr. Davis called on alumni and friends of the HBCU to contribute in any capacity they can, emphasizing that every donation helps expedite the college’s progress and overcome years of deferred maintenance. He encouraged the community to support Livingstone College and be part of its transformative journey.

“You might not be able to do a million. This is not time to put your hands in your pocket,” Davis said. “Well, it is time to put your hands in your pocket and make a contribution to Livingstone College. Do your part. Do the best that you can and you will help us expedite this “Miracle on Monroe Street.”

Livingstone College has been on a roll of late when it comes to donations. In the last seven months alone, the Salisbury, NC HBCU has accepted seven different $1 million donations. The college announced that on Friday it will exceed that amount when it accepts the single largest donation in the institution’s history.

That means the donation will have to be larger than $1 million, but how much larger is still unknown. The exact amount of the donation will be revealed by Livingstone College President Dr. Anthony Davis at the General Conference of the A.M.E. Zion Church in Greensboro, NC on Friday.

Livingstone also announced in a press release that, “this latest donation will be one of the largest outright gifts to a private HBCU in North Carolina.”

“This donation will assist us in advancing our mission, which is too critical to abandon and too important to take for granted,” Livingstone College President Dr. Anthony Davis said. “The money will allow us to accelerate campus renovations, improve the student experience, and solidify our place in Rowan County for generations to come.”

Livingstone College says the money will be used to continue the ‘Miracle on Monroe Street: Livingstone College Reimagined’ infrastructure and capital projects.

Crews are completing Phase One of the project, which will include two residence halls and a dining hall scheduled to open in the fall of 2024. The most recent donation will allow Livingstone College to start renovations on two additional residence halls, which are more than 50 years old.

Dr. Davis, an alum of Livingstone College, is the first graduate to serve as president in the last 50 years. Davis says the stewardship of this money is in alignment with a promise made to students and their families to execute campus improvements.

The 52nd Quadrennial Session of the General Conference of the A.M.E. Zion Church will be held at the Joseph S. Koury Convention Center at 10:00 am on Friday.

Livingstone College – a private HBCU located in Salisbury, NC – just picked up another big gift.

Livingstone College recently received its sixth unrestricted $1 million donation, a significant investment in its growth and development. Dr. Davis announced this generous contribution to the campus staff on Tuesday morning (6/18). The anonymous donor’s investment will reinforce the college’s infrastructure and fund upcoming capital projects, further enhancing the college’s mission and impact.

This news closely follows the college’s fifth $1 million contribution, received at the beginning of the month. It underscores Livingstone College’s importance to the Rowan-Salisbury community and the state of North Carolina as one of its premier private HBCUs and its ongoing commitment to supporting its students and their families.

On Saturday, June 22nd, the college hosted an orientation for prospective students and their families. This event gave incoming students and their families a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the Livingstone College community. They had the chance to tour the campus and, most importantly, meet with Dr. Davis and our dedicated staff.

Dr. Anthony J. Davis, president of Salisbury, North Carolina HBCU Livingstone College, announced Tuesday afternoon that the college was blessed to receive its fifth $1 million contribution. The donor, who wishes to remain anonymous, has given the College four additional $1 million contributions, the first being received during the College’s homecoming celebration last October. Dr. Davis exclaimed at that time that the initial $1 million contribution was the largest individual gift from a non-alumnus in the College’s history.

This additional gift will address the College’s challenges related to capital improvements and the campus’s infrastructure. It will also enable us to continue our mission to educate, equip, and empower our students to compete and contribute in a global context with confidence and competence. Dr. Davis appreciates the community’s support and hopes that this exemplary act of philanthropy will ignite the spirit of giving among other members of the community.

Livingstone College continues to benefit from anonymous donors who are pouring major funds into the North Carolina HBCU. The school announced on Wednesday that it received a $1 million dollar anonymous donation, the fourth consecutive anonymous donation of $1 million.

According to the school, Dr. Anthony J. Davis made the announcement on Friday, April 19 to members of the Salisbury-Rowan community and several of the college’s faculty and staff. Livingstone says that the donor has been a consistent and dedicated supporter of the college’s mission and vision.

Proceeds from this donation will be used to support a campus residence hall refurbishment project according to the release. This donation follows in the footsteps of the North Carolina College’s award of an Innovation Lounge Grant during the 2024 Retool Your School Contest, sponsored by Home Depot. Retool Your School is a multitiered project designed to provide grants to HBCU campuses to be used for campus improvement projects that promote sustainability and long-term benefits to the campus and students. That particular grant will allow Livingstone to enhance existing spaces on the campus where students can gather to collaborate.

The school has previously confirmed that the first three $1 million donations were made by the same individual. The latest release didn’t explicitly state that the fourth donation was made by the same individual.

Winston-Salem State and Livingstone College are set to meet in the C.E. Gaines Center on Saturday, Feb. 3. The two schools are separated by roughly about a 40-minute drive, and has developed into one of the most competitive rivalries in the CIAA, if not all of HBCU basketball and North Carolina.

Here are the numbers for the series dating back to 2006.

  • Total games played: 29
  • Wins for WSSU: 15
  • Wins for Livingstone: 14
  • Longest win streak for WSSU: 5 games (from February 23, 2019, to January 29, 2022)
  • Longest losing streak for Livingstone: 4 games (from February 13, 2012, to February 1, 2014)
  • Home record for WSSU: 6-7
  • Away record for WSSU: 8-5
  • Conference record: 12-11
  • Average points scored by WSSU: 77.62
Livingstone College, WSSU

The programs are both led by coaches who have multiple CIAA championships. James Stinson has been at the helm for 20 years at Livingstone College, leading it to its only two titles in school history in 2014 and 2015. Cleo Hill Jr. has led Winston-Salem State to CIAA titles in 2020 and 2023 in addition to the title he won at Shaw in 2011.

The last 10 matchups between these teams from February 24, 2018, to February 18, 2023, favored WSSU, with a record of 7 wins and 3 losses. WSSU is 7-2 against Livingstone since Hill took over the program prior to the 2018-2019 season. Only one of those games were decided by more than 10 points, with seven of those games coming down to six points or less.

Beyond the competitiveness of the basketball, both teams are guaranteed to have to turn fans away from their small gyms. The last game between the two teams was moved to Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Colisieum at Wake Forest where 4,500 fans showed up to watch the two teams battle.

Livingstone College President Dr. Anthony J. Davis experienced the fiscal and logistical realities of being in charge of an HBCU homecoming last October.

Less than a month into his tenure as the school’s 13th president, a shooting occurred on Salisbury, NC campus in the overnight of Saturday evening that involved two non-students.

It was a somber reminder of the realities facing institutions of higher learning in the post-COVID world where gun violence is a real threat more often than not.

“Reality sinks in that we don’t operate in isolation, we’re plagued by the same violence that hits our city streets every day. We’re plagued by gun violence, which is a national pandemic. And we talk about emerging from COVID. We’ve yet to deal with the national pandemic of senseless gun violence that really impacts our community,” Dr. Davis told HBCU Gameday. “But my students don’t deserve to be held hostage. They deserve to have a great homecoming experience, safe and without incident.”

As the school prepares for its second homecoming under Dr. Davis, it is making a change to how people access the campus on Saturday, October 21.

“So this year, we decided to take advantage of our gated community and say – number one – in order to get on our campus. One of the first things that you have to do is you have to a) go through metal detectors. There will only be two entry points. Everyone will have to go through metal detectors and there will be a clear bag policy because we’re going to make sure everyone is safe.”

Everyone who gets on the campus on Saturday will have the ability to watch Livingstone College take on Shaw University in its homecoming game – or not.

“And then we ask everyone to invest the economic model by paying $30,” Davis continued. “They get all pre-game activities. They get to go to the game. They also have the opportunity to have the post-game activities. We’re going to do a celebration for hip hop. We will bring in legendary rap artists, Kool Moe Dee and friends, and then we will end the night with Da Baby – all on the campus of Livingstone College for $30.”

A $30 entry fee will permit attendees to watch the game, enjoy the concert or just sit on the yard. (Steven J. Gaither/HBCU Gameday)

While everyone won’t go into the game or might want to see Da Baby but not Kool Mo Dee, Davis believes this new policy will help provide a better experience for all involved – including the school’s students. Davis says in years past the budget may not have allowed for the type of entertainment his students wanted on their campus.

“I said, my students deserve the best if they’re spending $26,000 to come to Livingstone and paying through activity fees. As a leader who cares about his students, I want them to have a great homecoming experience,” he said. “I don’t want to give them cause to go another HBCU because we’re bringing this type of limiting entertainment to their campus. And we’re going to execute it as safe as possible, and we’re going to make sure that everyone invests in the economic model to move us from surviving to thriving.”

Livingstone College football did something on Saturday it hadn’t done since its head coach Sean Gilbert was a member of the Carolina Panthers – beat Winston-Salem State in Bowman Gray Stadium.

Livingstone College got two clutch field goals from its freshman kicker Jason Zaputa in the final minutes to beat WSSU 23-21. Zaputa hit a game-winner from 44 yards out with 27 seconds remaining to give his team the victory.

“If the ball would have been on the 40. I was confident, because we practice a lot,” Zaputa told HBCU Gameday after the game. “We practiced way further than that. Just in case. Moments like this.”

It was the first win for LC at Bowman Gray Stadium since 1998 it edged out WSSU for the CIAA title and was the second consecutive over WSSU for the program.

The Blue Bears jumped out to a 17-0 lead before the Rams scored 21 unanswered points to take a one-point lead with 9:19 remaining. Zaputa, who had already hit a 50-yard field goal early in the second quarter, hit a 39-yard field goal with 4:29 remaining before knocking down the game-winner.

Livingstone out-gained WSSU 358 yards to 287, controlling the ball for 35 minutes. Receiver Devonte Deloatch caught the ball 11 times for 110 yards to lead LC, which got a pair of rushing touchdowns from Jymikaah Wells who finished with 59 yards on 17 carries.

The win was the second in a row for Livingstone, which started the season 0-4 and came into the game allowing 35 points per game.

“We took another step growing and I’m proud of our team,” Gilbert said. “Winston is a tough team. You know, we just got to continue to play the way we play and we’ll see what happens.”

Livingstone College will head to face Fayetteville State on Saturday while Winston-Salem State will travel to Durham to face Shaw University.

Salisbury, NC — Bluefield State University Football took down fellow CIAA opponent Livingstone College in their season opener 41-7 on Saturday.

The game kicked off with Bluefield State winning the toss and deferring their choice to the second half. Livingstone received the ball, hoping to make an early impact. However, Bluefield State’s defense had other plans.

Livingstone’s opening drive began at their 25-yard line. Their efforts were stifled by a relentless Bluefield State defense. The Livingstone offense struggled to move the ball, being met by Corey Watkins and TJ Gunter. Livingstone ultimately had to punt, but disaster struck as they fumbled the snap, allowing Bluefield State to recover the ball at Livingstone’s 37-yard line.

Bluefield State’s offense wasted no time. Led by freshman quarterback Jai’que Hart, they quickly capitalized on the turnover. Hart connected with a series of completions, including a 20-yard touchdown pass to Darius Thompson, taking an early 6-0 lead.

The following drive saw Livingstone trying to respond, but their offense continued to struggle against the Big Blue defense. Another fumble resulted in a turnover, recovered by Justin Campbell. The Big Blue marched down the field from the 37-yard line and later Hart connected with Cam Taylor for the 24-yard touchdown pass. The extra point by Braxton VanScoy was good, extending Bluefield State’s lead 13-0.

The Big Blue opened the second quarter with Hart finding Khyon Smith in the endzone. After a successful attempt from VanScoy, the Big Blue extended their lead 20-0.

Livingstone needed to response, but their offense continued to be plagued by turnovers and a relentless Bluefield State defense. The first half ended with Bluefield State in control, leading 34-0.

The Big Blue defense continued to stifle the Livingstone offense coming out of the half while the Big Blue offense added another touchdown to the board, making it 41-0.

Livingstone showed some signs of life in the fourth quarter, putting seven on the board.

Bluefield State’s dominant performance ultimately led to a resounding 41-7 victory.

In freshman QB Hart’s first collegiate start, he led the Big Blue with five touchdowns and 218 passing yards.

“Great team effort in this win! All three phases made plays that impacted the outcome,” said head coach Tony Coaxum. “We wanted to make a statement entering the CIAA! Our staff put together a great game plan and players executed it with great passion and energy!”

Spring football is in the air, but one HBCU football program is going viral for some action that happened in a residence hall and not on the football field.

A video featuring players wearing Livingstone College jerseys and helmets and crashing into each other is making its rounds on social media.

Livingstone College is a Division II HBCU located in Salisbury, NC. LC went 4-6 during the 2022 season.

In the video, two players stood across from each other in a hallway yelling back-and-forth. They then ran towards each other, with one eventually running over the other.

The video originated on TikTok, but made its way to Twitter via Overtime
– a platform that shares viral or potentially-viral sports-related content. Since being posted at approximately 10:30 PM, more than 1.1 million views have been accumulated.

As the video made its rounds, Dr. Mark A. Williams, Livingstone College associate head coach, recruiting coordinator and defensive line coach tweeted about the incident indirectly.

“For everyone messaging me about the viral video of two of our players in the dorm going head up. Not one coach approved it but in the words of Boosie…”

Williams proceeded to tweet a screenshot to the lyrics “Set It Off” by hip-hop artist Boogie Bad Azz. The lyrics read.

“You wanna talk s**t, you wanna run yo mouth…”

HBCU football is back, baby. And it doesn’t even have to be on the playing field.

Being down 16 points in the first half of the CIAA Tournament wasn’t something the Livingstone College women were hoping for – but they were prepared for it.

Livingstone College came back to take the lead and hold an eight-point advantage in the second half before fouls and turnovers did it in. Virginia State won the game 66-63. But it had to fight a determined, gutsy bunch, tooth-and-nail to do so.

“The Livingstone women basketball team is a picture of adversity,” interim head coach Maurice Sumpter said after the game. “The young ladies can do more than you could imagine. And they came on other side of it. Not unscathed. They come out on the other side. And you saw that today during the game.”

Sumter is the third person to coach Livingstone since the season started back in November.

Chiante Wester started the season as the Blue Bears head coach, but she was suspended in the first semester following claims of “toxic bullying” within the program. No decision has been made on her future, but Lamont Massie-Sampson was fired as Director of Althetics around the same time.

For a while, eSports coach Will Stanley took the reins of the team. Ultimately Sumter, a member of Webster’s staff, took over the program on Jan. 8. He led the team to a 7-10 record under his leadership, finishing fourth in the CIAA Southern Division.

Livingstone toughness was a gift and a curse

Livingstone College plays a hard-nosed brand of basketball, which is a strength but can also come back to hurt them. Wednesday evening it sent Virginia State to the line for 39 attempts while shooting just 13 of their own. It’s something that Sumter has noticed and tried to figure out.

“It was a big disparity. I’m not saying that would determine the outcome of the game, but it was noticeable. “We’re a physical team. And to be honest with you, we’ve been dealing with that all year, trying to measure the physicality throughout the game, throughout the night. And that’s been a common theme throughout the year where there’s been a disparity in the free throws.”

Andresa Alexander admitted things haven’t been all roses, but she and her teammates appreciate Sumter for holding the fort down.

“I feel like it’s definitely been a challenge, especially going through three coaches that one year. But I mean, Coach Mo has definitely made it a little bit easier for us. Of course, we have growing pains like every other team will have with their coach, but it’s just like we definitely know that he has made us better in some way, shape or form as a team individually. He’s been there for us mentally and physically and we appreciate that from the bottom of our heart.”

With the season over, flanked by Alexander and Thalia Carter, Sumter’s face was a mixture of disappointment and pride as he reflected on the last six weeks since taking over the gig.

“You know, they taught me just as much as I’ve taught them. And I’m just so proud of them beyond measure. It’s just amazing to be sitting in this seat with these two amazing young ladies beside me. But every last one of those young ladies in the locker room. And I just want to send a salute to them – and a special thank you to these young ladies and also coach Chiante Wester, who’s not with us. But all of us are a family together. I just enjoyed the experience with these young ladies, and I’m glad that they got a chance to experience every minute of it.”

SALISBURY, NC – Winston-Salem State guard Samage Teal knew what to expect when he and his teammates reached New Trent Gymnasium on the campus of Livingstone College. A who lot of talking.

Teal and his WSSU teammates did some talking of their own – most of it with their games – the visitors emerged from the hostile environment with an 88-83 overtime win on Saturday night.

“We already knew they were going to be against us – and was going to be talking to us and all – but we just stayed levelheaded,” said Teel, who finished with a game-high 21 points. “We came here to win a basketball game. We didn’t come here to talk to nobody. We came here to win. That’s exactly what we did tonight.”

Teel came up big for the Rams several times, hitting a 3-pointer to give the Rams a three-point cushion with just under 20 seconds left in regulation, and then hitting two free throws to put the game out of reach after the Blue Bears forced overtime. The game was a back-and-forth battle for the most part, with 18 lead changes and 13 ties.

“The atmosphere, It was great,” WSSU head coach Cleo Hill said after the game. “It wasn’t Gaines – it the Gaines Center energy – but it was good. I thought for the most part we stayed together. The game was up and down, highs and lows with the guys, for the most part – they bent but they didn’t break.”

WSSU had five players score in double-figures, including a 16-point, six assist performance from Issac Parson. It was a bit of redemption for the second-year player who missed a potential game-winner in the same building a year prior.

“I just want to come back in here, execute, make sure my team stayed together and we pulled out with a W,” Parson said after the game.

WSSU shot a sizzling 53.2 percent from the field for the game and hit 9 of 19 attempts from the 3-point line, helping to offset their 54 percent free throw shooting.

Khyree Temple and Paul Tako paced Livingstone with 15 points each. Livingstone has now lost three of its last four and falls to 9-10 overall, 5-5 in CIAA play.

Winston-Salem State improved to 15-5 on the season, 7-4 in CIAA play.

FAYETTEVILLE, NC — Fayetteville State withstood a spirited comeback by Livingstone from a 20-point halftime deficit to pull out an exciting 80-77 CIAA South Division win here at Capel Arena.

Temple, Broadnax lead Livingstone rally

The visiting Blue Bears (8-8, 4-3 CIAA, 1-1 S) behind 25 second-half points from Khyree Temple and 21 from Arion Broadnax came all the way back to tie the game at 77. Broadnax’s fourth-3 pointer of the period tied the game with 1:02 left.

But FSU center Kaleb Coleman canned a wide open three with :40 seconds left that turned out to be the game winner. Livingstone was able to get off four 3-point attempts in the waning seconds but could not connect.

Coleman led FSU (11-9, 6-2, 2-0 S) with 22 points, 18 in the second half. Point guard Jacob Crutchfield also finished with 22, 18 in the first half. Cress Worthy and Tyler Foster each had 10 points each.

Livingstone sophomore Khyree Temple (#0) had a game-high 35 points but it was not enough as the Blue Bears fell at Fayetteville State.

Temple, a 6-6 former 3A player of the year at Phoebus High School in Hampton (Va.), had a game high 35 points. Temple made 14 of 18 shots from the field. He and Broadnax were were the only Blue Bears to score in double digits. Broadax, who had all of his 21 after the break, hit 4 of 7 3s. Temple also led LC off the boards with 12 rebounds.

Fayetteville State early, Livingstone late

The tone was set for the game when FSU, who scored only 44 points in a win Saturday at home over Johnson C. Smith, surpassed that total in the first half. Behind four 3-pointers from Crutchfield, the Broncs built a 47-27 lead at the break.

Livingstone pressed the entire second half and quickly whittled the lead down. They opened the second half on a 17-5 run to cut the lead to 52-44 in the first seven minutes. FSU responded with an 18-12 run capped by Danny Myers’ turnaround jumper with 7:13 left to push the lead back into double-digits at 70-56.

Livingstone’s pressing defense forced several of FSU’s 24 turnovers late. Temple and Broadnax went to work on offense in the Blue Bears’ 21-7 spurt to force the tie and set up the game-winning heroics.

After the frantic finish, the teams tussled after the final buzzer. But referees and team officials were able to separate the teams and restore order.

Both teams continue CIAA South Division play this weekend.

Fayetteville State, the defending CIAA Tournament champion, hits the road to face Winston-Salem State Saturday (4 p.m.). Livingstone plays at JC Smith Saturday.

Livingstone College basketball and overtime are starting to become synonymous.

Against Claflin in Salisbury on Saturday afternoon, Livingstone faced its third overtime game in its last four contests. It came out on the positive side, defeating the visitors 96-95 in a game that went down to the wire in New Trent Gymnasium.

Khyree Temple came up clutch on both ends of the game in the final minutes, hitting a bucket to give his team a one-point lead with less than two seconds remaining. Temple finished the game with a block of a Jailen Williams layup attempt that would have changed the outcome of the game as the buzzer sounded.

It was an epic finish to the game for a Livingstone squad mourning the untimely passing of guard Eric Henderson, whose life ended in a car accident during Christmas break.

LC is 2-1 in overtime games this season, with both wins coming at home.

Williams finished with a game-high 25 points to go with 10 rebounds, four assists and four steals as Claflin came up on the short end of the stick. Allen Hatchett and Timothy McElroy both had big offensive nights for Claflin, scoring 22 and 21 points respectively. McElroy added 12 rebounds, including eight on the offensive end. Five Claflin players scored in double-figures, but it wasn’t quite enough.

After starting the season 9-0, Claflin is 3-3 in its last six games.

Livingstone College got 17 points from Pharaoh Lassiter to go with 15 points and 12 rebounds for Detionne Leach. LC, which averages 86.1 points per game, shot 48.6 percent from the field and just under 42 percent from the field as it improved to 8-7 on the season and 4-2 in CIAA play. Saturday’s win put LC at 2-0 against the two CIAA squads – Virginia Union and Claflin University – that were nationally ranked in December.

LC will face off against Fayetteville State in Salisbury on Wednesday. Claflin will travel to Winston-Salem State on Wednesday.

The top four teams in CIAA basketball matched up in Virginia on Thursday night and two teams stood above the others.

Virginia State used a hot start to come away with a definitive win over Winston-Salem State at home, while Claflin University went into Richmond and ended Virginia Union’s 28-game home win streak.

Claflin, the no. 24 team in the NABC top 25 poll, beat no. 19 Virginia Union 63-58 to improve to 10-1 overall, 3-1 in CIAA play. While stats were not available for the game as of early Friday morning, we do know that Claflin ended a home-winning streak at Barco-Stevens Hall that extended back to November 2019.

Down the road in Ettrick, VA, Virginia State beat Winston-Salem State 65-52 in a matchup that it never trailed in and was never really threatened in after the opening minutes. VSU led by as many as 20 points in the first half as WSSU went almost 10 minutes without hitting a field goal and was never able to cut the lead to less than nine the rest of the way.

Virginia State’s Tremere Brown blocks a Winston-Salem State shot attempt.

Terrence Hunter-Whitfield led the way for VSU with 24 points on 7-for-11 shooting from the field, including hitting four of his seven 3-point attempts. VSU improved to 11-4 overall and 4-0 in the CIAA. WSSU fell to 10-3 overall, 2-2 in CIAA play.

Elsewhere in the CIAA, Fayetteville State edged out Lincoln 65-64 as a Darryl Myers layup with four seconds remaining propelled the CIAA South team over the CIAA North squad on the road. Tyler Foster led FSU with 21 points and six rebounds while Reggie Hudson finished with 26 for Lincoln.

Livingstone College picked up a 92-84 win over Elizabeth City State on the road. Kyrie Temple paced Livingstone with 23 points in 29 minutes.

Moses Mupungo paced St. Augustine’s with 21 points in its 73-64 win at Bowie State. He hit six of his seven 3-point attempts in the overtime win.

The CIAA North-South crossover continues on Saturday. The schedule is as follows:

Johnson C. Smith at Elizabeth City State
Claflin at Bowie State
Winston-Salem State at Shaw
St. Augustine’s at Lincoln
Fayetteville State at Virginia Union

Livingstone College is deeply saddened by the passing of one of its own.

Student-athlete Eric Henderson, a member of the Livingstone College Men’s Basketball Team, died tragically in a car accident on Dec. 26, 2022.

Mr. Henderson was a sophomore at Livingstone College, but a freshman on the basketball team, where he played the small forward position.

He was an honor’s student and lived in the Honors Residence Hall.

A native of Virginia Beach, Va., he was committed to the team and to Livingstone College.

“He wanted to be at Livingstone College. He took pride in being a Blue Bear,” said James Stinson, Livingstone Men’s Basketball head coach. “He was willing to sacrifice to make sure everyone else was OK. He was the ultimate student-athlete.”

Livingstone College, Eric Henderson

“Our thoughts of comfort and peace during this difficult time is extended to Eric’s family, friends, teammates and college family,” said Livingstone President Dr. Anthony J. Davis.

Eric was also the great-nephew of Livingstone’s faculty assembly president, the Rev. Dr. Johnnie P. Henderson.

“While it is difficult as a campus family to lose a fellow Blue Blue, we send our love to Eric’s family as they deal with this tragedy during the holidays,” Davis said.

“I understand Eric was well-mannered, a hard worker and always smiling and upbeat. May the memory of who he was bring some comfort to those who loved and knew him,” said Davis.

The Livingstone Men’s Basketball team is expected back to campus on Wednesday.

HBCU football was born on Dec. 27, 1892. It was a cold, snowy day in Salisbury, North Carolina on the front lawn of Livingstone College. The visitors from Biddle University (now known as Johnson C. Smith University) came up from Charlotte. That’s a relatively short trek today – depending on what time you leave the Queen City to get on 85 North. But it was a much more difficult journey in the 1890s, especially in the winter.

But the young men from the two neighboring colleges were determined to play and in doing so broke new ground that is still being played long after they and their immediate descendants have gone from the physical form.

By all accounts, the game that was played that day was a far cry from the HBCU football that we know today. There was no band. No cheerleaders. In fact, most of the students had gone home for the Christmas holiday. The Charlotte Observer recorded the game with a three-sentence paragraph on Dec. 29, 1892.

“Walter Murphy was umpire and Peter Hairston referee of the football game between the Livingstone College and Biddle University teams yesterday afternoon. The game resulted in a score of 4 to 0 in favor of the Biddle University. The snow hindered the game.”

Fourteen decades and thousands of games later, North Carolina Central defeated Jackson State in the Celebration Bowl to close out yet another season of HBCU football. Millions watched as two teams played an exciting game that went into overtime with underdog NCCU beating Jackson State and Deion Sanders 41-34.

HBCU football eventually expanded from Delaware to Oklahoma, with dozens of spots in between. Many of the young men who would follow in the footsteps of the Livingstone and Biddle players have become the greatest ever to play the game. Perhaps more than that, though, the culture surrounding the game remains one-of-a-kind.

“Watching games when I was at Morehouse in the ‘70’s. I saw Walter Payton, Too Tall Jones, Morris Stroud, Jackie Slater and more,” Howard University professor Dr. Harold Dean Trulear said.

“It means family,” Morehouse and North Carolina A&T graduate Owen Lawson wrote. “It means community. It means love and respect. It means institution building.”

“HBCU football is my football foundation,” FAMU alumnus Keith Hadley responded. “The atmosphere is unmatched and the pageantry is next level. Especially when you have experienced Classics and Home games. I love the family atmosphere that is unique to HBCU football.

“They’re what make college football great: Representation. Tradition. Fun football. Great bands. Awesome student sections. Unique environments” wrote Christian Goeckel.

You could ask that question to a thousand people and probably get a thousand answers.

College football, at its core, is about passion, pride and pageantry – and HBCU football is its own special brand. It’s bigger than one school. One conference. One player. One coach.

By any measure – attendance, television ratings, cultural relevance – the football brand of historically black colleges is at an all-time high and only climbing higher. Here’s to another 131 years!

SALISBURY, NC – Fayetteville State made itself right at home on Saturday as it trounced Livingstone College during its homecoming game.

FSU scored early and often on Saturday, coming away with a 44-7 win over its CIAA South rival. It improves to 5-2 on the season, 4-1 in CIAA play.

Demari Daniels helped Fayetteville State move the ball on offense, hooking up for a pair of touchdown passes to Barry Elliot in the first quarter. The first came with five minutes remaining in the quarter on a 66-yard breakaway pass. The second came with just 17 seconds remaining in the quarter as he found him for a 22 yard score to give the road team a 14-0 lead.

Elliot would find the end zone another time in the first half with an eight-yard run to lift his team to a 28-7 lead before the extended homecoming halftime.

Fayetteville State Caden Davis
Redshirt freshman Caden Davis rumbled for 90 yards against Livingstone.

The Broncos dominated all sides of the ball, but particularly at the line of scrimmage. They recorded eight sacks against the Blue Bears, and forced them into three turnovers. Cameron Merrell led the way with seven tackles, 1.5 sacks and two tackles for loss in a dominant effort.

Fayetteville State used a three-pronged quarterback attack against Livingstone, completing 14 of 21 passes for 201 yards and one interception. Redshirt freshman Caden Davis led the team in rushing with 90 yards, 63 of them coming on one run. K’hari Lane scored on quarterback sneak for the final touchdown of the game. FSU heads to Charlotte next weekend as it will take on Johnson C. Smith for its homecoming.

Livingstone was limited to just 168 yards of offense on 70 plays for an average of 2.4 yards per play. The loss dropped it to 2-5 on the season.

THE SERIES

Saturday’s game marks the 32nd meeting between the two teams. Livingstone owns an 18-13 all-time record against Bowie State dating back to 1973. The Bulldogs are 9-8 at home against the Blue Bears entering Saturday’s game. The last meeting between the two teams, Bowie State blanked LC for a 49-0 win during the last meeting held on Sept. 25, 2021 in Salisbury, N.C.

Bowie State has won seven of the last 10 matches, including a two-game win streak entering Saturday’s game. The longest win-streak against LC was three-straight back in 2008-2011. The Blue Bears last victory against the Bulldogs came in 2014 (36-33) in Salisbury, NC.

LAST TIMEOUT

Bowie State (2-2, 1-1 CIAA) was able to erase a first half scare to defeat the Falcons of Saint Augustine’s, 36-20 at the George Williams Athletic Complex. The win snapped a two-game losing skid. The Bulldogs turned in season-high 503-yards of total offense that featured 251 through the air and a season-high 252 on the ground. For the first time this season, the Bulldogs went 4-for-4 in point after touchdown attempts and tallied three interceptions for 61-yards and a TD.

Redshirt sophomore Corey Johnson (Upper Marlboro, MD) rushed for a season-high 117-yards on 16 carries and a TD — the best for a Bulldog running back this season highlighted by a 70-yard rush in the fourth quarter. Graduate senior Dion Golatt, Jr. (Largo, MD) threw nine completions on 16 attempts for 130-yards to go along with two rushes for 30-yards and a rushing TD — his first of the season.

Three receivers had over 50-yards led by redshirt junior Keshane Hinckley (Laurel, MD) with 69-yards and five catches. Defensively, junior Cameron Proctor (Bryans Road, MD) recorded six tackles, two tackle for losses, a sack, a quarterback hurry and a forced fumble while redshirt sophomore Sadiq Salawu (Upper Marlboro, MD) tacked on five tackles. Of the Bulldogs four sacks, sophomore Tyshawn Blow (Chesapeake, VA) registered a 1.5 sack while graduate senior Ellison Jordan (Upper Marlboro, MD) posted one and junior Shaun Tolbert (Baltimore, MD) tacked .5.

THE BULLDOGS LEADERS

Bowie State averages 22.3 points per game (3rd in CIAA) after four games while their opponents post 24.3 points (8th CIAA). Golatt has completed 76 passes for 945 yards, six TDs and four interceptions, which all rank second in the CIAA. Samuel Doku (Silver Springs, MD) leads the run game unit for Bowie State as he ranks sixth in the CIAA with 51 carries for 222 yards and two TDs.

Hinckley continues to lead the Bulldogs receiving unit with 264 yards (3rd CIAA), 21 catches (3rd CIAA) and a TD. Redshirt senior Joshua Pryor (Baltimore, MD) has a team-high 22 tackles (nine solo), 3.5 tackle for losses and 3.5 sacks while redshirt sophomore Keith Williams (Baltimore, MD) trumped 20 tackles, two interceptions, a pair of breakups and 1.5 tackle for loss.

STAT LINE AMONGST CIAA

Bowie State ranks third in the CIAA in offense having combined for 89 points including 12 TDs and now two field goals through four games this season. Notably the run game for BSU has struggled this season but against the Falcons last week the Bulldogs rushed for a season-high 252-yards 46 times and scored two rushing TDs in the contest. That game alone moved Bowie State up in the CIAA rankings for total rushing yards (532) from 10th to sixth. However, the Bulldogs have been quite the passing team this season, ranking second with 1,068 receiving yards (267.0) and six touchdowns.

Defensively, the Bulldogs rank fourth amongst the CIAA in points allowed by an opponent at 24.3 points. The rushing defense has allowed 462 yards through after four games (4th in CIAA) and 644-yards passing (4th in the CIAA) as the Bulldogs have allowed six touchdowns (5th in CIAA).

THE POLLS

Bowie State fell out of the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) DII National rankings and the D2Football.com Top-25 list with the loss to Shaw in Week 3. Since, the Bulldogs remained ranked in the BOXTOROW Media Poll, HBCU DII Coaches Poll and HBCU GameDay’s DII Football Poll. This week, the Bulldogs moved up a spot in both the DII Coaches and Media Poll at No. 6 and No. 9 while in the HBCU Gameday DII Football Poll, Bowie State was No. 6 (week 4).

LIVINGSTONE BLUE BEARS

LC is 1-3 and 0-2 in the CIAA entering Saturday’s game. The Blue Bears suffered a 37-7 loss to Virginia State last outing and have not loss two-straight. LC trailed 16-0 at the half and scored their lone touchdown in the fourth on a 3-yard reception for Matthew Henry however, the Trojans were already up 37-0 when the Blue Bears scored with 3:47 left in the contest.

Myran Henderson led the Blue Bear defense with 13 tackles. Followed by Will Tims with nine. Kevin Larkins, Jr. and Ryan Hatter, Jr. both had seven tackles in Saturday evening’s game. Lazarus Anderson accounted for 115 yards of total offense (99 passing, 16 rushing). Matthew Henry led the Blue Bears in receiving with seven catches for 53 yards. Quandarious Smith led in rushing with 35 yards.

LC ranks 10th in offense, averaging 11.3 points per game amongst the CIAA while on defense they are ninth allowing 30.8 points from its opponents. The Blue Bears have scored just eight TDs through four games (12th in CIAA) and ranks last in the league in rushing (29.0), rushing defense (227.0) but they defend the pass game fairly well, currently atop in the CIAA allowing just 108.8 yards per outing.

Silas Cruse has the most yards at the QB position (472-yards) on 47 completions, four TDs and three interceptions. Tutson has a team-high 16 carries (55-yards) while Lasirton Bryant has 185 receiving yards (19 catches) and two TDs. Defensively, Jaden Echols has collected 27 tackles, followed by Will Tims (19) and Mekhi Dunlap (17) round out the top tacklers for the Blue Bears.

Bowie State will head to division foe Virginia State for a televised game at 4 p.m. from Rogers Stadium in Ettrick, Va. Fans unable to make the game can catch all the action live on the CIAA Sports Network.

CHARLOTTE, NC – HBCU golf programs got a taste of the big-time at Quail Hollow in the inaugural Charlie Sifford Centennial Cup at the start of the week. It’s a course that has seen its share of PGA Tour events including the PGA Championship in 2017, the Wells Fargo Championship annually, and the return of the PGA Championship in 2025. In weeks, it will host the Presidents Cup, meaning PGA Tour golfers will trek the same Bermuda grass that the HBCU golf programs did recently. Much of the construction of the risers, tents, media stations, and grandstands was present while finishing touches were being made to complete the setup.

It was meant to be a competition between the top HBCU golf teams in a PGA environment in celebration of the 100th birthday of black golf pioneer Charlie Sifford. Sifford’s sons Charlie Sifford Jr. and Roger Sifford along with other family members were present for the event as guests of the PGA. It ended up being much more than anticipated. The day before the tournament was to take place, each of the six participating school golf programs were awarded $25,000 for whatever the programs desired. With funding for most HBCU golf programs in a squeeze, the unexpected gift will go a long way to assist in the upcoming season.

Adam Sperling, Executive Director of the PGA Tour and a representative of the President’s Cup was encouraged by the event leading up to the Presidents Cup.

“We’re fortunate to have four wonderful sponsors to help us put on this event in Bridgestone, Citi, Cognizant and Nucor,” he said. “With their support and some other pieces that came together we were able to drive significant contributions to the programs. HBCU involvement in golf has ramped up over the years and we’re just finding our opportunity to fit in and do our part and certainly want to keep what momentum this weekend has been generated this weekend going.”

During a practice round, luncheon and various development activities, the golfers were all presented with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

HBCU golf stars show their stuff at Quail Hollow

Monday, it was all business as in the true fashion of the President’s Cup, players would play a singles round followed by a match play round. Team Sifford, made up of Florida A&M, Alabama State, and Livingstone College defeated Team James Black which consisted of Johnson C. Smith, Howard and Texas Southern.

Players were fitted with a full complement of gear including new golf bags, polo shirts, hats and other incidentals. The entire experience directly reflected what happens at official PGA and PGA Tour Events.

This wasn’t a celebratory lap or an NBA All-Star game, this was a competition. The players responded with some very good stretches. Howard University’s Gregory Odom Jr., the reigning HBCU national medalist, pulled off a stretch of three birdies and an eagle on holes 11,12,13 and 14. Everett Whiten (Howard), of the reigning national champion Bison, pulled off three birdies in a row, mastering holes 11, 12 and 13. Jacob Uyesato (FAMU) carded two consecutive birdies and an eagle on holes 6,7 and 8. Ty Roberts (ASU) also carded three consecutive birdies on holes 4,5 and 6.

In the final tally, Team Sifford would score a 12-6 victory over Team Black. The competition was followed by a group picture at the historic Quail Hollow courtyard and a brief celebratory reception as these HBCU golf stars shared the opportunity of a lifetime.

The post Livingstone College hoping future is as bright as blue turf appeared first on HBCU Gameday.

]]>
SALISBURY, NC – Livingstone College head coach Sean Gilbert is no stranger to championship football, having played his high school career in western Pennsylvania, where the likes of Dorsett, Montana, Marino and Namath began their respective paths to success.

With preseason practices underway, the second-year coach would like his young team to recognize his background and be energized by it as they try to rebound from a one-win season in 2021 and exceed expectations to finish at the bottom in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association this season.

“I just shared with my kids a little bit about where I come from and helping them to understand that the pedigree and the mindset to compete and win started when I was young,” says Gilbert, whose 11-year National Football League career includes a five-year stint with the Carolina Panthers. “Coming from a tradition of what we do, and we bring that in, I bring the same energy to coaching …”

When Gilbert says kids, he’s not kidding. The Blue Bears have approximately 40 freshmen and about as many second-year players. That could be the prime reason that Livingstone was picked to finish tied for fifth in the CIAA’s South Division.

Livingstone College
Livingstone College is looking to climb out of two-plus decades of CIAA purgatory.

“We don’t worry about what the polls say. That’s fair to put somebody where you think they should be,” Gilbert said. “But it’s up to us to prove that to be different. And so, there’s no complaints in terms of where we are in trying to grow what we do.”

To help his youthful roster find a way out of the CIAA cellar, Gilbert revamped his coaching staff. He has a new offensive coordinator, a new offensive line coach and a new wide receivers coach. Gilbert is expecting junior quarterback Lazarus Anderson to locate his targets in a new system, and that outside linebacker Terrance McPherson Jr. will continue the play from a freshman year in which he collected 21 tackles in a two-game stretch, and fellow linebacker Jaden Echols, who had 65 tackles in 2021.

“We have the turtle walk, but still have to expect to win at the end, just like the turtle does,” Gilbert said. “The rabbit’s going to be the rabbit. And, in so far as we are concerned, we have to focus on ourselves.”

While Gilbert was revamping his coaching staff, Livingstone College was making changes to its home field. When the season opens against cross-town rival Catawba on Sept. 3, the teams will be playing on a light-blue artificial surface, a first for HBCUs and one of the few non-green playing surfaces in college football. The new field resulted from the efforts of Pro Football Hall of Fame member Willie Lanier, who raised $1.1 million to replace the old grass at Historic Hovey Stadium with field turf. Lanier also aimed to replace fields at other HBCU football fields. Some changes have been completed or are underway.

Livingstone and cross-town rival Catawba used to square off for the Mayor’s Cup Trophy, but that hasn’t happened in a few years. Gilbert says he hopes to see the gane resumed, but he suggests that his team has its eyes on other things.

“Right now, our kids (couldn’t) care less about hardware,” he says. “It’s about hard work right now.”

Tough non-conference schedules have led the way to CIAA success. The Bulldogs face another gauntlet in 2022.

The post Toughest 2022 CIAA football schedules appeared first on HBCU Gameday.

]]>
It is said ‘to be the best you have to beat the best,’ and that certainly is an adage that could apply in CIAA football.

Teams from the CIAA’s North Division have won the last four CIAA football titles — the last three by Bowie State (2018, 2019 and 2021) with Virginia State taking the crown in 2017. One reason could be that the North Division teams play tougher non-conference schedules than their South Division counterparts.

Looking at the schedules of CIAA teams in 2022, the same could apply.

Top of the heap

Bowie State (12-2, 7-0 CIAA) is the current conference kingpin as it enters its first season in 13 years without head coach Damon Wilson, who moved over to lead Morgan State of the MEAC. The Bulldogs are ranked seventh nationally in the Lindy’s Magazine Div. II preseason rankings and 10th in the Versus D2 college rankings that came out a week ago.

Former BSU player and assistant under Wilson, Kyle Jackson, takes the reins of the Bulldogs on an interim basis for the 2022 season. He inherits another tough non-conference schedule that will likely prepare the CIAA-favorite Bulldogs when conference play begins.

New interim head coach Kyle Jackson will navigate the three-time CIAA champion BSU Bulldogs through a challenging non-conference schedule as they seek their fourth straight league title.

Last year, after a close 32-24 loss on the road to MEAC member Delaware State to open the season, BSU got a hard-fought home win over Saginaw Valley State (28-19) and a road win at New Haven (27-13) before starting its CIAA schedule.

Jackson and Bowie State open at home this season on Sept. 3 vs. New Haven, ranked 18th in the 2022 Lindy’s preseason NCAA Div. II national rankings. New Haven’s loss last year to BSU came in a 10-2 season. The Chargers went on to win the 2021 Northeast-10 conference championship and then won a first round Div. II playoff game over conference rival Bentley. They lost in the second round to Kutztown, 10-7.

New Haven is the preseason pick to repeat as NE-10 champion.

A special date at SVSU

The Bulldogs then play at Saginaw Valley State on Sept. 10 before beginning CIAA play vs. Shaw on Sept. 17.

This year’s Bowie State game at SVSU will include a unique collaboration of common ground that will highlight the history and experience of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). BSU will combine with SVSU to offer several educational and cultural events in the days leading up to the Saturday football game, including appearances at SVSU by Bowie State’s renowned Symphony of Soul marching band, and joint programs hosted by faculty of both institutions.

“While our athletic teams and those of other HBCUs often compete against non-HBCUs in various sports, the experience is often limited to the athletic contest,” said Clyde Doughty, director of intercollegiate athletics at Bowie State. “This partnership between Bowie State and SVSU provides extraordinary learning opportunities for representatives of both schools and their communities. I am not aware of any similar ventures that have ever been undertaken.”

SVSU finished 7-4 a year ago. After its loss at Bowie State, SVSU battled eventual Div. II national champion and fellow Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference member Ferris State in a 47-45 loss. Ferris State went on to win the GLIAC title and beat Valdosta State in last year’s D2 championship game, 58-17.

SGSU was picked fourth in the GLIAC this year after a 4-3 finish last year.

There will likely be an indication how Jackson and the Bulldogs will fare without Wilson and departed quarterback Ja’rome Johnson and star running back Calil Wilkins, after these early games.

Bowie State in preseason rankings

Bowie State is picked seventh in the Lindy’s Magazine 2022 NCAA Div. II preseason poll. Riding a stingy defense a year ago, the Bulldogs got a 17-7 win over Fayetteville State to win its third consecutive CIAA crown. They then posted a 31-10 win over Lenoir-Rhyne in the first round of the D2 playoffs and a 13-10 win over Newberry in the second round to reach the national quarterfinals.

BSU lost to eventual national runners-up Valdosta State, 41-17 in the D2 quarterfinals. In its toughest CIAA contest in 2021, BSU staved off four TD passes from QB Chauncey Caldwell and over 200 rushing yards from Darius Hagins to pull out a 51-44 win over Virginia State.

BSU will play at Virginia State on Sat., Oct. 8.

CIAA football: N. Div. contenders

Virginia Union (6-4, 5-2), who finished behind BSU in the N. Div. last year, also has a tough non-conference opponent early. The Panthers, in their fourth season under Dr. Alvin Parker, travel to 2021 Div. II runners-up Valdosta State on Sept. 10 after opening at home on Sept. 3 vs. Virginia-Lynchburg. Valdosta State, who walloped VUU 51-7 a year ago, is ranked first or second in most preseason Div. II polls.

Virginia State (3-6, 3-4), with new head coach Dr. Henry Frazier III at the helm, opens on the road on Sept. 3 at Lenoir-Rhyne. The Bears finished 8-3 overall last year, 6-2 in the South Atlantic Conference behind champion Newberry. Both made the Div. II playoffs where they lost to Bowie State. It was the third straight Div. II playoff appearance for LRU. The Bears are picked second in the SAC and come in ranked 16th in the Lindy’s preseason poll.

Chowan (7-3, 4-3), who finished between VUU and VSU in the North a year ago, begins the season with home games vs. middle-of-the-road SAC teams Barton on Sept. 1 and Tusculum on Sept. 10. Mark Hall is in his second year leading Chowan.

CIAA football: South Division schedules

Four-time South Division champion and 2022 division favorite Fayetteville State (8-2, 7-0) is led by seventh-year head coach Richard Hayes. The Broncos open at home vs. UNC-Pembroke of the Mountain East Conference. The game is dubbed the Two Rivers Classic and is set for Sept. 3. They last met in 2016 with UNC-P defeating FSU 50-28. UNC-P was 6-5 last year, 6-4 in the MEC.

FSU follows that with a Sept. 10 date at home vs. Wingate, who finished 8-3 a year ago including a 40-21 win over FSU at Wingate. Wingate also beat Shaw 20-7. Wingate lost to Newberry and Lenoir-Rhyne in last year’s SAC race. The Bulldogs are picked third in the preseason behind Newberry and Lenoir-Rhyne.

Shaw (6-4, 5-2), the second choice in the S. Div., opens at Wingate on Sept. 3 before travelling to Wayne State on Sept. 10. The Wayne State Warriors are picked sixth in preseason GLIAC projections. Shaw is led by Adrian Jones, also in his seventh season.

Winston-Salem State (3-6, 3-4) also has an interesting start to its first season under Robert Massey now that his interim tag has been removed. The Rams open on Sunday, Sept. 4 in Canton, Ohio vs. Central State in the Black College Football Hall of Fame Classic.

The Rams then renew an old CIAA rivalry the following Saturday (Sept. 10) as they travel to Durham to face North Carolina Central of the MEAC. This will be the 46th meeting between the Rams and the Eagles with NCCU holding a slight 23-22 series advantage by virtue of last season’s close 20-13 triumph.

The CIAA football offseason has been very busy for member schools. The offseason has brought significant changes to coaching staffs. The conference now sports three alumni who are in head coaching positions for their alma maters, along with several other head coaches who have prior coaching experience within the conference. The changes now amount to a CIAA that may see more parity this season than it has in prior seasons.

Here’s how things changed in the CIAA North.

A rundown of the significant changes that have occurred in the CIAA South since last season is as follows:

Johnson C Smith

The Golden Bulls’ football program will enter the 2022 season with Kermit Blount out as head coach, and Maurice Flowers taking the helm. Flowers is no stranger to the CIAA, as he himself graduated from JCSU after playing quarterback for the football program. Flowers’ coaching career involves multiple stops at CIAA schools, and having extensive success as a coordinator. Flowers’ body of work includes developing quarterbacks who have led the CIAA in passing such as JCSU’s Ryan Carter in 2010 and Shaw’s James Stallons in 2012. He also coached former JCSU QB Keahn Wallace to the 2011 CIAA Offensive Rookie of the Year honors, directed Miles’ offense to a SIAC Championship in 2015, and guided Fayetteville State’s offenses to CIAA Southern Division titles in 2017 and 2019.

Flowers left Fort Valley State after directing the Wildcats to a 7-5 record in two seasons. Flowers did not retain DC Johnson “Jeep” Hunter, and instead enticed Barry Tripp to follow him from FVSU to Charlotte. Tripp, a former defensive lineman at WSSU, was the DC at Fayetteville State in 2019 before moving to FVSU.

Other Notable Additions

DB Coach Chi-Emeke Worthington: A JCSU graduate himself, Worthington returns to JCSU after a two year stint at UNC-Pembroke in the same capacity. He was instrumental in developing the Golden Bulls’ strong defensive secondary during his tenure, including developing all-CIAA and record-setting DB Carlo Thomas.

Shaw

Head coach Adrian Jones will open the season without former OC Manigo, who has the same position at Virginia State. Receivers coach Toryeon Hester will now call plays. Hester has been on staff since Jones has been at Shaw, so this promotion should provide some continuity in the program. DC Gilbert Wiggins continues in his position.

Fayetteville State

A new year for head coach Richard Hayes brought along another search for an offensive coordinator. Since 2017, the Broncos have opened the season with someone who didn’t call plays the prior year. This time, offensive coordinator Howard Feggins enters the role after being an offensive coach at Colorado State-Pueblo. He coached some of DII’s top running backs in a run-heavy scheme for the Thunderwolves, and that knowledge bodes well for a Broncos program that favors a running back by committee approach. Last year’s OC, Calvin Randall, is now the quarterbacks coach and recruiting coordinator. DC Dominic Anderson returns for another season guiding the defense.

CIAA Robert Massey WSSU Winston-Salem State
Robert Massey has officially assumed the role of head coach at Winston-Salem State.

Winston-Salem State

WSSU’s biggest news was that the administration removed the interim tag from HC Robert Massey’s title. He now has a four-year contract. Massey retained former WSSU quarterback-turned-OC Kameron Smith; however, the coaching staff faced several changes beyond that position. Markus McElveen is now the DC after coaching at the high school level. He was a former All-CIAA offensive lineman for Shaw. OL coach Chris Holmes joins the staff after having the same role at Fayetteville State for the past five years.

Livingstone

Livingstone’s offense struggled last year, so much that second-year HC Sean Gilbert opted to replace pieces of his offensive staff. Chiefly, new OC Marcus Crandell will lead the Blue Bears’ offense. Crandell is a former Canadian Football League quarterback, and was a quarterback at East Carolina. Prior to his appointment, he was the offensive coordinator for the University of Saskatchewan and had other quarterback coaching stints in the CFL. Crandell may be able to help an offensive unit that was shut out three times in 2021.

St. Augustine’s

St. Augustine’s went through the offseason with no major defections, retaining HC David Bowser, OC Graham Hobbs, and DC Stephen Tate.

He appears here at Wednesday's CIAA Media Day with VSU junior running back Darius Hagans (r.). Frazier is one of four new coaches in the CIAA.

With a new head coach at three-time defending champion Bowie State, the door may appear open for someone other than the Bulldogs to take the CIAA football championship.

That was perhaps the feeling Wednesday for head coaches and players at the 2022 CIAA Media Day at Roanoke’s Holiday Inn Valley View.

Damon Wilson, who led Bowie State for 13 years, has moved to Morgan State with former linebackers coach Kyle Jackson taking the helm of the Bulldog program on an interim basis. Jackson says, ‘not so fast’ to the rumors of BSU’s impending demise.

The CIAA football champions

Kyle Jackson

“The biggest key is setting the standard of expectations,” Jackson said. “When I talk to the guys, I let them know the standard is the standard regardless of who’s here, who’s not here.”

Jackson is a former middle linebacker who played under Wilson in 2009 and 2010 and joined Wilson’s coaching staff in 2017. He also echoed his former mentor’s mantra of ‘tradition never graduates.’

“Things are not going to change much,” Jackson said of his 12-2 team that was undefeated in conference play (8-0) and won an unprecedented two games in the NCAA Div. II playoffs to reach the national quarterfinals.

“We saw how far we could really go (last season). It opened a lot of eyes to the potential the Bowie State program has. A lot of those guys are returning.”

Bulldog stalwarts

Chief among the BSU returnees is Joshua Pryor, a 6-4, 260-pound senior defensive lineman who accompanied Jackson to the proceedings. Pryor had his three championship rings prominently displayed on his fingers.

Bowie State DL Joshua Pryor

Pryor would likely have been the league’s preseason defensive player of the year had one been chosen. Often facing double teams, he posted 73 tackles, six sacks and 21.5 tackles for 84 yards in losses last season. Pryor has 28.5 sacks, 66 tackles for losses of 343 yards in his three seasons at BSU.

“I will have double-teams, they’re going to run away from me,” Pryor said, “but I know my guys are going to be there at the end of the day. We all have our job to do and that’s execute.”

BSU also returns hard-hitting defensive backs Myles Woolfolk (75 tackles) and Raymond Boone (58 tackles) and linebacker Wesley Bowers (58 tackles). Boone had been rumored to be joining head coach Deion Sanders at Jackson State but Jackson said he is returning to the Bulldogs.

On offense, Jackson has to find replacements for two-year starter JaRome Johnson at quarterback and 1,000-yard rusher Calil Wilkins.

CIAA football: North Division challengers

Bowie State’s chief challenger in the North Division may come from a source familiar with the Bulldogs’ tradition.

New Virginia State head coach Dr. Henry Frazier III

New Virginia State head coach Dr. Henry Frazier III could be considered the architect of the Bowie State program. Frazier was a successful quarterback for the Bulldogs from 1986-89 and served as head coach from 1999 to 2003 where he coached Damon Wilson.

He moved to Prairie View A&M from 2004 to 2010 and won the SWAC championship in 2009. Frazier spent two years at NC Central in the MEAC before returning to help Wilson as a special assistant during the 2018 and 2019 championship years. He replaced Reggie Barlow at VSU late, in May of this year.

“I have experience with that,” Frazier said of his late arrival. “I got the Bowie (head coaching) job on July 22 and we still had a winning season. So I figure we’re ahead of the curve right now.”

Frazier also said Barlow did not leave the cupboard bare. “It’s not empty. There’s players and talent there. Walking into this situation is my best situation in terms of Bowie, Prairie View or (NC) Central. Coach Barlow and his staff did a good job of signing a pretty good class, 23 or 24, we brought in another ten freshmen and another 12 to 15 transfers on top of that. So, we’ll have players. It’s just a matter of them following my lead.”

Virginia Union and Elizabeth City State

Virginia Union has been the closest to dethroning Bowie State in the North. The Panthers finished 12-5 in the division over the last three seasons under Dr. Alvin Parker, finishing second, a game behind Bowie State twice (5-2 last season).

“That’s the game (vs. Bowie State) that’s been stopping us every year,” Parker said. “We win that game any one of the three years and we’re playing in Salem (site of the championship game). We feel good about what we’re doing and we have a process at Virginia Union that’s tried and true. It creates championships.” The Panthers play at Bowie State this season on Oct. 15.

Coach Parker brought along sophomore running back Jada Byers (914 yds., 5.4 yards per carry) who led the league with 12 rushing touchdowns. He earned offensive freshman of the year honors. “I feel this is the season we get it done,” Byers said.

Marcus Hilliard is the new coach returning to lead his alma mater, Elizabeth City State. The Vikings have not had a winning season since 2012. Hilliard played for former ECSU coach Waverly Tiller in the early 2000s when the Vikings were perennial contenders for N. Div. and conference honors. He has been a defensive guru at both ECSU and VUU and wants to return ECSU to its former standing. The 2022 theme for the Vikings is ‘Restore the Culture, A new era at ECSU football.’

“Coach Hilliard has come in not just to create a football team that is going to compete on Saturdays but build a program that can compete for years to come,” said Zion Riddick, ECSU’s all-CIAA kick returner and wide receiver.

Hilliard was the defensive coordinator on that 2012 ECSU team that made it to the championship game. “We had a good run before,” Hilliard said of his time playing and coaching with Tiller. “Putting my impact on the team and bringing back some of the good things we did in the past, that’s my goal. We’ve been down, so we’re trying to change the infrastructure. I just want to put my stamp on that.”

Chowan and Lincoln (Pa.)

Chowan, particularly in the last two seasons with Bryce Witt at quarterback, has been an offensive juggernaut and threat in the North. The Hawks led the CIAA in total (432.2 ypg.) and scoring offense (38.5 ppg.) last season.

Second-year head coach Mark Hall will enter 2022 without Witt (2,864 passing yards, 31 TDs, 4 ints.) or standout wide receiver/kick returner Imeek Watkins (68 rec., 886 yds., 10 TDs). Wideout Laurence King (51 rec., 658 yds., 8 TDs) returns.

Chowan finished 7-3 overall, 4-3 in CIAA play in Hall’s first season. Defensive Rookie of the Year Isaac Anderson (37 tackles, 8 sacks, 20 TFL), a 6-3, 260-pound tackle, is the top returning defender.

Lincoln enters its third season under Josh Dean coming off a 1-9 season, 1-6 in the CIAA. The head coach said he’s taking on more responsibility this season. Junior defensive back Eric Best said he believes the team is coming together

CIAA football: Top of the South Division

The real chasers of Bowie State are again led by head coach Richard Hayes’ Broncos of Fayetteville State. After dominating the South Division, FSU has fallen to the Bulldogs in the CIAA championships game in each of the past three campaigns. They have won four straight S. Div. titles.

They are still searching for their first championship in seven years under Hayes. The championship game losses to BSU have been by 30-10 (2018), 23-7 (2019) and 17-7 (2021) scores. “We feel like we’re very competitive (vs. BSU). We’ve started slow every year, turned the ball over early,” Hayes said. “If we can eliminate those things, I think we’ll have a good chance in the end.”

FSU will feature the league’s top returning quarterback, Khari Lane, who was voted the preseason all-CIAA quarterback. Lane threw for over 2,000 yards with 20 TDs and only five interceptions. Brandon Barnes-Bowman (5 ints.) leads the defense.

Sixth-year head coach Adrien Jones has guided Shaw (6-4, 5-2 S) past Winston-Salem into second in the S. Div. behind FSU. The Bears are 0-5 during Jones’ tenure vs. FSU including a close 15-12 fourth-quarter loss a year ago.

The Bears return the league’s top ground attack (194.8 ypg.) with top returning rusher, junior Sidney Gibbs (948 yds., 5.7 ypc., 94.8 ypg., 6 TDs.) and Andre Braxton (508 yds., 10 TDs). All-CIAA offensive linemen and Antavious Zachery and Tyreese Bobbitt are also back in the fold.

“They (the offensive line) were the MVPs of our team,” Jones said. “We’ve got a lot of toys on our offense. We’ve got to be dynamic in anything we do, offense, defense and special teams.

“I think that we have the football team to beat Fayetteville State but we’re gonna have to play disciplined football, we’re going to have to be smart coaches and put out our guys in the right situations at the right time.”

Winston-Salem State and others

After two seasons, Robert Massey had the interim tag removed and plans to get Winston-Salem State back to elite status. That development has helped the Rams, in effect, start over.

“We have additional coaches added to the staff, obviously that we needed,” Massey said “It’s (having the tag removed) helped us from the recruiting standpoint. It’s put us in position to bring in about 40 freshman. We’ll bring in about 20 transfers. We want to build this program, basically starting over. But at the same time, we want to compete for a championship.”

The Rams (3-6, 3-4 S) had just junior DB Elijah Banks on the preseason all-CIAA team.

Johnson C. Smith (1-7, 1-5 S), Livingstone (1-8, 1-5 S) and Saint Augustine’s (1-7, 1-6 S) were able to muster just one win last season.

Maurice Flowers enters his first season leading JCSU. The former Fort Valley State head man is returning to his alma mater and his hometown of Charlotte, NC. Flowers said he’s brought in 55 freshmen to turn the Golden Bulls program around. He will feature all-CIAA graduate wide receiver Reggie Bryant who hauled in 49 catches for 693 yards and seven TDs a year ago.

Sean Gilbert enters his second season leading Livingstone. He said a new blue turf is ready for the Bears’ stadium while construction on a new track is being finished. He said his young and green team should be better and more competitive. Sophomores Jade Echols at middle linebacker and Malik Head at defensive tackle are the top defenders. Andrew King is a key transfer.

David Bowser enters his second season with double-duties of athletics director and head football coach at St. Aug’s. He hopes to shore up a defense that gave up 218 rushing yards and 33.4 points while scoring just 11 points per game last season. Defensive tackle Marcus Davis, the student body president, and sophomore cornerback Jeron Hinton are leaders on that side of the ball. Soph QB Christopher Perkins leads the offense.

HBCU athletes competing Thursday in the opening round at the U.S. Track & Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon were largely successful. Six advanced while three did not.

The top three finishers in each heat and the next four fastest times advanced to the semifinals.

HBCU athletes: First round results

Randolph Ross Jr., the two-time defending NCAA 400 meters outdoor champ at NC A&T, won the second heat in the event Thursday in 45.66 to advance. He was the only HBCU product to win a heat Thursday. Randolph announced earlier this week that he will leave A&T to join his father, who departed the Aggies to become the new head of track and field programs at Tennessee.

Howard senior Jessica Wright made it out of the first round in the women’s 400 meter hurdles. Wright, the MEAC champion who finished ninth in the NCAA Outdoors, finished third in the second heat in 57.56.

In the women’s 100 meters, former A&T sprinters Kayla White, Symone Darius and Cambrea Sturgis advanced. In the fourth heat, White who runs for Nike, finished third in 11.08 seconds to advance. Darius, who ran unattached after finishing her collegiate eligibility in the 2022 Indoor season, finished fifth in the second heat in 11.17 seconds. Sturgis who now runs for adidas, finished fourth behind White in the fourth heat in 11.19 seconds.

Darius and Sturgis advanced on time. They had the 14th and 15th best times of the 16 that advanced. She’Carri Richardson, who won last year’s 100 at the Olympic Trials but was disqualified later after testing positive for marijuana, did not advance Thursday. She finished fifth in the third head in 11.31 seconds.

Belcher advances

In the men’s 100 meters, former Aggie Christopher Belcher advanced but A&T sophomore Javonte Harding did not. Belcher, who runs unattached, finished fourth in the second heat but advanced on time with a 10.19 clocking. Belcher and Harding were in the heat that included Fred Kerley, who won the heat with the only sub-10 second time in the round, 9.89. Harding, who revealed earlier in the day that he would be transferring to Tennessee, fell short after finishing sixth in 10.32 seconds.

In the women’s 400 meters, defending U. S. champion and Livingstone product Quanera Hayes and A&T senior Delecia McDuffie both fell short. Hayes, who runs for Nike, finished last in the second heat in 54.13. McDuffie, in the third heat, finished sixth in 51.87.

BALTIMORE – Day Three of the 2022 CIAA Tournament on the men’s side started out just like the women’s tournament – with epic wins by Livingstone College.

Hours after the LC women knocked off rival Johnson C. Smith by two points, the men did the same to CIAA North runner-up Lincoln.

Freshman guard DeShone Hicks hit a floater from the top-of the key with less than two seconds remaining to give LC the 91-89 win. LC advances to the semifinal where it will take on CIAA South runner-up and tournament overall top seed Fayetteville State on Friday night.

Freshman Kyrie Temple led the way with a game-high 23 points, 14 of them in the second half for the hot-shooting Blue Bears. They shot 56.5 percent from the field overall, hitting better than 63 percent of their field goal attempts after halftime.

“I’m just thankful you know, I’ve been through a lot,” Temple said after the game. “I stayed down, I trust my coach with this process and I just came here to play.”

Reggie Hudson was Lincoln’s leading scorer with 21 points. He also added nine rebounds and five assists. CIAA player of the Year Zharion Blue added 18 points and Bernard Lightsey put in 15. LU shot a respectable 47.8 percent from the field overall and hit six of 14 attempts from the 3-point line, including one from Lightsey with 11 seconds remaining to tie the game at 88.

“We knew it was going to be a hard battle, with Lightsey and Blue and some of the other student-athletes that they have,” LC head coach James Stinson said. “But we were able to persevere and hold on.”

Livingstone will now turn its attention to Fayetteville State, who earned its spot in the semis by taking care of business against Virginia State on Wednesday night. The two CIAA South squads split the regular season, with each team winning on its home floor. But the stakes are much higher now, as the winner will play the winner of Winston-Salem State-Virginia Union in the CIAA Tournament title game.

“We’re ready for anything,” Livingstone guard Cameron Carpenter said. “I feel like no matter what opponent we got in front of us, we’ll be ready for them.” “

This is unfinished business,” Irving said, following his senior teammate’s lead. “We’re taking it day-by-day.”

Two days down, two more to go for the guys from Salisbury, NC.
