Virginia State University announced Wednesday that Head Women’s Basketball Coach Nadine Domond is stepping down from her position to pursue new professional opportunities, bringing an impactful three-year chapter with the Trojans in the CIAA to a close.

Since taking over the program in 2022, Coach Domond compiled a strong 58-28 overall record, including a 35-14 mark in CIAA play and a dominant 5-1 record against longtime rival Virginia Union. Under her leadership, VSU became a consistent force in the conference, making two CIAA Tournament Semifinal appearances (2023, 2024), a run to the CIAA Finals in 2025, and securing an NCAA Tournament berth for the first time since 2018.

Her first season laid the groundwork, as the Trojans finished 12-16 overall and advanced to the CIAA quarterfinals with an even 8-8 conference record. The program’s resurgence gained full steam in 2023–24, when VSU posted a 23-win season, broke into the top 10 of the WBCA Coaches Poll, and made a return trip to the CIAA semifinals.

CIAA Division Title

This past season, the Trojans matched their 23-win mark, captured the CIAA Northern Division title, and earned their long-awaited NCAA Tournament bid—marking the first time since 2016–18 that the program achieved back-to-back 20-win seasons.

Coach Domond’s impact extended far beyond the win column. Eight Trojans earned All-CIAA honors during her tenure. In 2025, she was named CIAA Women’s Basketball Coach of the Year and was featured on the Coaching Excellence Honor Roll. Carmen Kweti was recognized as the CIAA Defensive Player of the Year, while standout Amesha Miller received the NCAA’s 50th Anniversary Scholarship a season earlier.

Domond also placed a strong emphasis on academics. She coached three Academic All-District selections and mentored both Carmen Kweti and Anii Harris to become Academic All-American finalists, as recognized by the College Sports Communicators (CSC).

Most recently, Coach Domond was selected to coach in the inaugural HBCU Women’s All-Star Game, held April 6 in San Antonio, Texas.

Statement from Tiffani-Dawn B. Sykes, Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics:

“We are deeply grateful for the leadership Coach Domond brought to our women’s basketball program. Her influence has been felt not only in the wins she helped produce, but in the personal and academic growth of our student-athletes. She leaves behind a legacy of competitive excellence and mentorship.

The search for our next head coach is underway. We are determined to find a leader who will build on our recent momentum and elevate the program to national prominence. With the support of our administration, alumni, and boosters, we remain fully committed to pushing the Trojans to new heights.”

As VSU begins the next chapter, the impact of Coach Domond’s leadership will remain an enduring part of the program’s foundation.

The NCAA Division II men’s basketball tournament bracket has been revealed and a total of five HBCU programs — three from the CIAA alone — will compete for a national title.

CIAA champion Virginia State will be joined in the Atlantic Region by Fayetteville State and Bluefield State University. SIAC champion Savannah State will carry the flag for its HBCU conference. And Lincoln (Missouri) will represent from the GLVC.

Virginia State (21-8) was slotted third in the Atlantic Region. It will take on no. 3 seed West Chester (PA) of the PSAC. VSU is making its first appearance in the NCAA Division II tournament since 2019. It was selected to play in the 2020 tournament that was cut short by COVID-19.

Fayetteville State was awarded an at-large bid, earning no. 4 in the Atlantic Region. It will take on Fairmont State (27-4) of the Mountain East Conference. CIAA foe Virginia Union defeated Fairmont State handily earlier this season. This is Fayetteville State’s first NCAA bid since winning the CIAA in 2022.

Rounding out the CIAA trio is newcomer Bluefield State. BSU went 19-11 in its second season as a member of the CIAA, more than doubling its season win total and going to the CIAA Championship Game for the first time in history before losing to Virginia State. It will take on no. 1 seed and regional host West Liberty which finished 27-4, including a two-point win over Bluefield State early in the season.

Bluefield State, HBCU, NCAA

This marks the first time the CIAA has claimed three bids to the tournament since 2013 when Bowie State, Livingstone College and Winston-Salem State all made it in to an Atlantic Regional hosted at West Liberty.

Savannah State, meanwhile, is the lone representative for the SIAC. SSU was 10-11 after 21 games this season but got red hot just in time, winning eight in a row to claim the league title and the no.8 spot. It will face off against Nova Southeastern, host of the Southern Regional.

Lincoln (MO) is headed back to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1981 after winning the GLVC and finishing with a 23-8 record. LUMO will play Lake Superior State in the first round of the Midwest Regional.

Five HBCU basketball teams in the NCAA Division II tournament isn’t unpresedented, but it has been quite a while.

HBCU women

The NCAA Division II men’s basketball tournament bracket has been revealed and a total of three HBCU programs — two from the CIAA — will compete for a national title.

CIAA champion Fayetteville State will be joined in the Atlantic Region by Virginia State. SIAC champion Miles College will carry the flag for its HBCU conference.

Virginia State, CIAA runner-up, received an at-large bid, slotted no. 8 in the Atlantic Region. It will take on no. 1 seed Edinboro of the PSAC, the host of the tournament.

Fayetteville State, the back-to-back CIAA champion, earned the no.7 bid in the Atlantic Region. It will take on Fairmont State (27-4) of the Mountain East Conference. This marks the return of FSU to the NCAA Tournament after making a multiple-game run last season.

Miles College, meanwhile, is the lone representative for the SIAC. It will take on no. 1 Union.

BALTIMORE, MD – Virginia State University secured the CIAA Championship in a hard-fought 71-64 victory over Bluefield State at CFG Bank Arena on Saturday afternoon. The Trojans, led by head coach Lonnie Blow, overcame a tough opponent and a rollercoaster season to reclaim the conference title for the first time since 2019.

“I’m really, really proud of these young men,” said Blow. “Our season was kind of streaky. We started off slow, 1-3, then went on a long winning streak. Got to conference play, dropped three in a row, but then we got ourselves back on another long run. We came into the tournament with momentum, and we just kept pushing.”

Virginia State (21-8, 12-3 CIAA) leaned on its defense to stifle Bluefield State (19-11, 10-6 CIAA), holding the Big Blue nearly 30 points below their season scoring average. The Trojans dominated the rebounding battle, outworking Bluefield State 52-38 on the boards. Jayson Harris and Davian Coleman each grabbed 12 rebounds, helping VSU limit Bluefield State to just one shot per possession down the stretch.

“Our defense was huge,” Blow emphasized. “We knew they liked to get out and run in transition, so our focus was to make them play against our half-court defense. We wanted to make them work for every basket, and I think we did that.”

Virginia State University, CIAA

The game remained tight throughout, with nine lead changes. Virginia State held a narrow 36-35 lead at halftime before gaining control in the second half behind the play of Jacob Cooper, who finished with 16 points and eight assists. Jared White delivered in key moments, scoring seven of his 11 points in the closing minutes, including a crucial three-pointer that gave VSU the lead for good.

The defining moment came when Jaedan Jefferson ignited the crowd with a fast-break dunk, shifting momentum firmly in favor of the Trojans. “Jaden, that’s my guy, man,” Cooper said. “I stay on him to always be ready for the moment, and he couldn’t have been more ready today. He told me he wasn’t losing, and that’s the mentality we all had.”

For Blow, the championship held even deeper significance. It was a tribute to former Virginia State athletic director Peggy Davis, who passed away earlier on Oct. 16. “Miss Davis brought me to Virginia State,” he reflected. “I know she’s smiling down on us from heaven. This championship is for her.”

Virginia State University now turns its focus to the NCAA Division II Tournament, where they hope to continue their run. “We’re going to take a day to rest and get back in the gym,” Blow said. “This is a special win, but we’re not done yet.”

The post HBCU fairy-tale: Sykes’ journey comes full-circle appeared first on HBCU Gameday.

]]>
HBCU sports is built on legacy, and few stories encapsulate that legacy more than Tiffani-Dawn Sykes’ return to Virginia State University as the Assistant Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics. On her 45th birthday, in the heart of the CIAA Tournament in Baltimore—close to where she has been working at the University of Maryland—Sykes’ appointment was announced. It is a fitting homecoming, as she takes over for the late, great Peggy Davis at her alma mater.

From student-athlete to the head of Trojan athletics, Sykes’ journey has been a whirlwind of experience, preparation, and destiny. A proud graduate of Virginia State, she got her first taste of the administrative side of sports while watching trailblazing Black women like Alfreeda Goff and Peggy Davis lead the program. That experience lit a fire in her, one that took her across the HBCU landscape—from St. Paul’s to Virginia Union, from the CIAA headquarters back to Grambling State, and from Florida A&M to Maryland.

But as fate would have it, the road always led back to Ettrick, Virginia.

“It feels amazing,” Sykes said in a sit-down interview with HBCU Gameday at the CIAA Tournament. “My passion for college athletics was really ignited at Virginia State when Alfreeda Goff was the athletic director my freshman year. It was a Black woman. And of course, succeeding Peggy Davis, another strong Black woman in that role… It just means so, so much to me.”

Davis’ legacy at Virginia State is undeniable. She won a CIAA women’s basketball championship before taking over as athletic director and transforming VSU into a model of success. Under her watch, Trojan athletics expanded, thrived, and set a standard that Sykes now has the opportunity—and the responsibility—to uphold.

There’s no question that following a giant like Davis comes with pressure, but Sykes isn’t backing down from the challenge.

“It’s quite a bit of pressure,” she admitted. “She was a really great administrator, enjoyed a lot of success, and was really progressive. As recently as a few years ago, she added lacrosse and soccer, both men’s and women’s, to the plate of opportunities at Virginia State.”

Sykes spent her Friday afternoon sitting courtside with her new boss — President Makola Abdullah — and cheering on her alma mater as both the men’s and women’s teams competed for spots in the CIAA title game. Both teams won their respective games and will play for titles on Saturday.

Clearly Tiffani-Dawn Sykes is stepping into the role at a pivotal time. Virginia State’s athletic programs have remained competitive, with football making a CIAA title game appearance last fall. Looking ahead, her focus is on taking the Trojans to prominence on a national level—CIAA championships, regional dominance, and a national presence.

“I want Virginia State to be in these conversations. When people are looking back and talking about the history and the tradition and the legacy of the CIAA and they’re mentioning Virginia State University as a national championship team.”

It all came together on her birthday, at the CIAA Tournament, in the same city where she had recently worked. It was more than an announcement—it was a moment of poetic symmetry for Sykes, who was born during the CIAA Tournament as was the first woman PA announcer in the conference tournament’s storied history. Her story testament to the power of HBCUs in shaping lives and finding the right fit.

For Tiffani-Dawn Sykes, the assignment is clear. Virginia State’s motto is “Greater Happens Here.” Now, she has the chance to leave her stamp on the university once more.

Virginia State University proudly announces that VSU alumna Tiffani-Dawn Sykes has been hired as the Associate Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics at the HBCU. Sykes, a 2001 VSU graduate, brings more than 20 years of progressive leadership in college athletics to the position.

“I am honored to return to Virginia State University, where Greater Happens Here, as the Associate Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics,” said Sykes. “I want to thank President Abdullah and the search committee for their trust and confidence in me to lead Trojan Athletics.”

Sykes returns to the University after most recently serving as a player development assistant and advisor to the head football coach for the University of Maryland. She also served as the Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics at Florida A&M University from 2023-2024, making history as the first woman to hold the position. Sykes also had prominent roles in athletics at multiple Division I and Division II institutions.

During her career, Sykes has displayed an unwavering commitment to fostering an environment of empowerment, accountability, and excellence. Now, her next chapter will be to continue instilling that same philosophy at her alma mater.

“Virginia State University athletics has a long history of excellence, and I am confident in Tiffani-Dawn Sykes’ ability to uphold that tradition,” said VSU President Dr. Makola M. Abdullah. “Her values, vision, professional experience, and passion for our University made her a perfect fit for this role. We are extremely fortunate to have her back home as a member of our Trojan Family.”

HBCU Virginia State University Tiffani-Dawn Sykes

Sykes has served on several NCAA committees throughout her career, including:

 • NCAA Leaders and Legends Selection Committee
 • NCAA Dr. Charles Whitcomb Leadership Institute Selection Committee
 • NCAA Olympic Sports Liaison Committee
 • NCAA Division II Track & Field Regional Ranking Committee
 • NCAA Women’s Tennis Regional Ranking Committee

She has also earned multiple awards for her work in college athletics, notably the:

 • 2024 Women Leaders NIKE Executive of the Year (DI-FCS)
 • 2024 Bob Hayes Invitational Track & Field Meet Community Service Award
 • 2024 City of Tallahassee Community Champion Award
 • 2023 Lights on Sports FCS AD of the Year

Additionally, Sykes participated in the NCAA Dr. Charles Whitcomb Leadership Institute in 2007, a prestigious program that supports the professional development of minority athletics administrators. In 2023, she completed the NCAA Pathway Program, the most competitive and exclusive program that the NCAA offers. The pathway program prepares senior-level athletics administrators to take the next step in their careers to become athletics directors or conference commissioners.

Sykes holds a Master of Science in Sports Administration from Grambling State University and a Bachelor’s in Health and Physical Education from VSU. During her time as a Trojan, Sykes was a team captain and four-year starter for the University’s volleyball team. She was also a letter-winner on the HBCU track and field team.

“My experiences as a student-athlete at VSU ignited my passion for college athletics, and the education I received here laid the foundation for a fulfilling and progressive career,” said Sykes. “I am excited to continue leading our student-athletes, coaches, and staff in the pursuit of national excellence—both in the classroom and in competition.”

Sykes, who will begin her position on March 31, will succeed the late Peggy Davis, who dedicated nearly 30 years to Trojan Athletics and left a lasting legacy before her passing in October 2024.

VSU is excited to welcome Tiffani-Dawn Sykes back to the HBCU campus, where we will support her as she takes our Athletics Department to new heights and continues to champion student-athlete success.

Virginia State University (VSU) is the latest HBCU to officially join the elite ranks of R2-designated institutions, a distinction held by only 139 universities nationwide and fewer than 15 HBCUs. This prestigious designation, awarded by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, recognizes universities with high research activity and significant doctoral degree production. With this achievement, Virginia State University strengthens its position as a leader in research, innovation, and graduate education among HBCUs.

“This is a significant milestone for Virginia State University,” said Dr. Omar Faison, Vice Provost for Research & Economic Development. “Achieving R2 status signals to federal agencies, industry partners, and prospective students that VSU is a leader in innovation, discovery, and advanced scholarship.”

Abdullah, Virginia State University, HBCU

Attaining R2 status highlights VSU’s continued investment in research infrastructure, faculty excellence, and external grant funding. The university has demonstrated a strong commitment to expanding doctoral programs and fostering a culture of academic excellence. “This designation is a testament to the outstanding work of our faculty to secure competitive research funding and provide greater opportunities for our students to engage in groundbreaking and impactful work,” said Dr. Tia Minnis, Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs.

As an R2 institution, Virginia State University is poised to enhance its impact in key research areas such as agriculture, health outcomes, computer and data science, advanced manufacturing, and STEM education. This recognition not only boosts the reputation of the HBCU but also expands opportunities for students and faculty to participate in cutting-edge research initiatives.

With this achievement, Virginia State University reaffirms its commitment to innovation and transformative research opportunities. To learn more about VSU’s research initiatives, visit vsu.edu/research.

ETTRICK, Va. – After a strong 2024 season that saw Virginia State claim the CIAA regular-season title before falling to Virginia Union in the championship game, head coach Dr. Henry Frazier III has announced a series of staff changes ahead of the 2025 campaign.

Leading the list of additions is Rahmann Lee, who will serve as the new offensive coordinator. Lee arrives from West Virginia State, where he helped guide an explosive offense that ranked among the nation’s top 25 in both rushing yards per game (194.7) and points per game (33.2). Under his leadership, WVSU produced four All-Mountain East Conference players. Before his tenure there, Lee made stops at ASA Miami, Arkansas-Pine Bluff, and his alma mater, Glenville State, where he was a record-setting running back.

Virginia State has also made several internal promotions and adjustments to the coaching staff. Carlos Fields will add assistant head coach to his existing role as defensive coordinator. Fields, a former standout at Winston-Salem State and NFL linebacker, has been instrumental in shaping the Trojans’ defensive identity.

On the offensive side, Kris Wilson has been named run game coordinator, while Jerome Jeter will take over as pass game coordinator. Bryce Bradley will oversee the defensive pass game, ensuring the Trojans continue their dominance in the secondary.

Additionally, Ariella Ellis has been appointed pro liaison, a key role in assisting players with professional opportunities at the next level.

With these changes in place, Virginia State looks to build upon last season’s success and take the next step toward reclaiming the CIAA championship in 2025.

HBCU football continues to make waves on the national stage, as standout players from historically Black colleges and universities earned top honors in the NCAA Division II Super Region Two awards for 2024. Headlining the accolades is Jada Byers, Virginia Union University’s record-breaking running back, who was named Offensive Player of the Year.

Byers’ historic season cemented his legacy as one of the greatest to ever wear a Virginia Union uniform. Already VUU’s all-time leading rusher with 5,965 career yards and 77 touchdowns, Byers elevated his game even further in 2024. He rushed for 1,947 yards, breaking his own school record, and ranked second nationally in both rushing yards and touchdowns (26). His explosive performances propelled Virginia Union to its second CIAA championship appearance in three years and secured his spot as one of eight finalists for the prestigious Harlon Hill Trophy. Byers’ dominance reflects the rich tradition of HBCU excellence in athletics, as he shattered expectations and etched his name in both school and conference history.

The All-Super Region Two First Team also featured several other HBCU stars, highlighting the depth of talent across these programs. From Virginia State, offensive lineman Bruno Onwuazor earned a spot for his role in anchoring one of the conference’s most efficient offenses. Meanwhile, Clark Atlanta University wide receiver Armonte Harris was recognized for his dynamic ability to stretch the field, showcasing why he is one of the top receivers in the SIAC. Joining him was Brevin Caldwell of Johnson C. Smith University.

On the defensive side, Bowie State linebacker Saliq Salawu represented the Bulldogs with distinction. Known for his physicality and leadership, Janack consistently disrupted opposing offenses, earning his place among the region’s best. Johnson C. Smith linebacker Benari Black left his mark as well.

These honors not only celebrate individual achievements but also highlight the growing recognition of HBCU football within Division II. Players like Byers, Black, and Caldwell continue to elevate their programs and inspire future generations. As HBCUs assert their place on the national stage, their athletes prove that they belong among the elite, carrying on a legacy of excellence that resonates far beyond the gridiron.

The 2024 football season in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) thrilled fans with a showcase of talent. This talent came from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). The season featured standout performances. Records were broken. There were unexpected twists. It highlighted the strength and competitiveness of HBCU football programs within the CIAA. Here’s a comprehensive team-by-team evaluation, incorporating key statistics, notable games, and standout players.

Virginia Union University (Grade: A+)

 • Preseason Rank: 2nd
 • Final Standing: 1st (6-1 conference, 7-3 overall)
 • Offensive Ranking: 1st in Total Offense (479.4 yards/game, 61 TDs)
 • Defensive Ranking: 4th in Total Defense (295.2 yards/game, 22 TDs allowed)

Highlights:

 • Jada Byers, the CIAA Offensive Player of the Year, dominated the field, amassing 1,497 rushing yards and 23 touchdowns. He set school records with 5,311 career rushing yards and 70 touchdowns. This includes a single-game record of 324 yards and six touchdowns against Bowie State.
 • Virginia Union clinched the CIAA Championship, defeating Virginia State in a decisive victory.
 • The Panthers secured a spot in the NCAA Division II playoffs, representing HBCUs on the national stage.
 • VUU’s loss to Johnson C. Smith University (JCSU), did not count as conference defeats due to CIAA scheduling rules impacted by St. Augustine’s absence from football this year.

Summary: Virginia Union showcased exceptional prowess on both offense and defense, leading the CIAA. This reinforced its status as a powerhouse among HBCU football programs.

JCSU, CIAA, HBCU Gameday
Johnson C. Smith started the season hot but ended ice cold.

Johnson C. Smith University (Grade: A)

 • Preseason Rank: 4th
 • Final Standing: 2nd (5-2conference, 8-2 overall)
 • Offensive Ranking: 3rd in Total Offense (378.4 yards/game, 32 TDs)
 • Defensive Ranking: 1st in Total Defense (246.2 yards/game, 17 TDs allowed)

Highlights:

 • Head Coach Maurice Flowers was named CIAA Coach of the Year after leading the Golden Bulls to an impressive season.
 • Benari Black, the CIAA Defensive Player of the Year, led a stout defense with 113 tackles. He spearheaded the top-ranked defense in the conference.
 • JCSU achieved significant victories over Tuskegee and Morehouse from the SIAC, and delivered Virginia Union their only on-field CIAA loss.
 • Despite their strong performance, they suffered a crucial conference loss to Fayetteville State.

Summary: JCSU exceeded preseason expectations. They solidified their reputation within the CIAA and HBCU football. The team combined a formidable defense with strategic coaching. This made them one of the season’s standout teams.

Virginia State University (Grade: B)

 • Preseason Rank: 1st
 • Final Standing: 3rd (6-1 conference, 7-4 overall)
 • Offensive Ranking: 2nd in Total Offense (385.7 yards/game, 43 TDs)
 • Defensive Ranking: 2nd in Total Defense (283.5 yards/game, 19 TDs allowed)

Highlights:

 • The Trojans secured a notable win against Benedict from the SIAC.
 • Bruno Onwuazor earned CIAA Lineman of the Year, contributing to an offense that averaged 6.3 yards per play.
 • Defensive Rookie of the Year, Marquis Edmond, bolstered an already strong defense.
 • Virginia State’s only victory over a team with a winning record was against Benedict, limiting their impact against top-tier opponents.

Summary: Virginia State showed statistical strength. However, they fell short in securing wins against leading teams within the CIAA. This impacted their overall grade. This happened despite their perfect conference record adjusted by CIAA rules.

Post-game altercations AKA brawls were a theme this weekend in HBCU football — and the CIAA Championship Game was no exception.

The conference title game of the CIAA between Virginia Union and Virginia State — two schools separated by less than 30 minutes — was chippy one. And that continued after the whistle sounded on Virginia Union’s 17-13 win. Several players engaged in postgame fisticuffs, prompting a statement from the league’s commissioner.

“I am disappointed and heartbroken regarding the behaviors of two of our best teams at the conclusion of our 107th football championship,” said CIAA Commissioner Jacqie McWilliams Parker. “The conference will investigate and manage per its bylaws and processes for unsportsmanlike behavior and misconduct.

“It is disappointing that our story and narrative for this championship did not end with the story that should be told as part of the CIAA legacy, leadership and community.”

The CIAA title game was one of several pivotal HBCU football contests marred by brawls after the fact.

Things kicked off with North Carolina Central and Howard on Friday night, with both players and coaches involved in the action, which was broadcast live on ESPNU. MEAC Commissioner Sonja Stills issued a statement on Saturday, promising an investigation of the incident.

And moments after Jackson State clinched the SWAC East title with a win over Alabama State, the two sides broke out into a brawl in the middle of the field. Alabama State AD Dr. Jason Caple released a statement as well.

While the Mike Tyson and Jake Paul was promoted as the big fight this weekend, apparently HBCU football games signed up to be on the undercard.

Virginia Union held off Virginia State in a gritty 17-13 battle to claim the CIAA Championship in Salem, Virginia, securing back-to-back titles in an HBCU title bout. The victory, powered by the relentless ground game led by Jada Byers and a staunch defensive stand, solidified the Panthers’ dominance in the conference as they now await word on their potential berth in the NCAA Division II playoffs.

The Panthers struck early, with Byers capping an eight-play, 94-yard drive with a two-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. Virginia State answered with a field goal in the second, but Brady Myers’ 22-yard kick just before halftime gave Virginia Union a 10-3 lead.

In the third quarter, Virginia State’s Romelo Williams connected with Tylique Ray for a seven-yard touchdown to tie the game between the two Virginia HBCUs at 10-10. The momentum seemed to shift, but Virginia Union responded early in the fourth. Quarterback Mark Wright found Reginald Vick Jr. on a 23-yard strike, giving the Panthers a 17-10 edge.

Virginia State clawed back with a field goal, narrowing the gap to 17-13 midway through the final quarter. The Trojans’ final drive reached Virginia Union territory, but the Panthers’ defense stiffened, forcing a turnover on downs with less than a minute remaining. Roberto Alvarez sealed the victory with a late interception.

Byers — the CIAA Offensive Player ofThe Year– was a workhorse for the Panthers, rushing for 178 yards and a touchdown, while the defense recorded seven tackles for loss, including two sacks. The win not only crowned Virginia Union as champions but also underscored their resilience and ability to thrive under pressure.

Now 8-3, Virginia Union awaits the NCAA playoff selection. The HBCU squad is hopeful for an opportunity to extend its season and showcase their championship pedigree on a national stage for the third consecutive year.

In Super Region II of the NCAA Division II Regional Rankings, four HBCU football programs are in the mix for playoff contention as we head into the final week before the field is announced. With only the top seven teams earning a playoff spot, each HBCU’s Week 11 outcome will be pivotal in determining their postseason fate. Here’s where things stand:

1. Miles College (6th, 8-1 overall, 8-1 in-region) – Miles holds a critical advantage as it will compete in the SIAC Football Championship game against Clark Atlanta this week. A win here would solidify its position in the top seven, while a loss could endanger its playoff spot. Currently, it is in control of its own destiny.

2. Johnson C. Smith University (7th, 8-2 overall, 8-2 in-region) – JCSU is clinging to the seventh and final NCAA playoff spot, but it will be idle this week after dropping a game to Livingstone. This leaves its fate partially in the hands of other teams’ performances. Johnson C. Smith needs key teams, like Virginia Union and West Florida, to falter if they hope to hold their position in the final playoff bracket.

3. Virginia Union University (9th, 7-2 overall, 6-1 in-region) – Virginia Union has a crucial opportunity to improve its standing as it faces Virginia State in the CIAA Championship game. A win could boost it into playoff position, depending on how other results fall. It’ll be aiming to move past Johnson C. Smith, taking advantage of JCSU’s idle week despite the fact it lost the head-to-head matchup with it.

Kairon Martin, HBCU Gameday, WSSU

4. Winston-Salem State University (10th, 7-2 overall, 6-2 in-region) – Winston-Salem State dropped in the rankings despite a thrilling 37-31 overtime victory over Fayetteville State. Like Johnson C. Smith, WSSU will be idle this week, limiting its ability to make a final impression. It will be watching the outcomes of the SIAC and CIAA championships closely, hoping for results that might create an opening for it.

With two of these four HBCU football programs (Johnson C. Smith and Winston-Salem State) idle, their NCAA playoff hopes will rest largely on the performances of Miles and Virginia Union. This week’s results will be decisive in determining which HBCUs make it into the playoff field. For more insights on team scenarios and standings, check HBCUGameday.com for the latest updates.

In a high-stakes matchup at Rogers Stadium, Virginia State pulled off a 35-28 victory over Virginia Union, igniting excitement for an upcoming HBCU rivalry rematch in the CIAA Championship.

Virginia State’s win was as thrilling as it was essential; their championship hopes depended on Johnson C. Smith’s unexpected 15-10 loss to Livingstone College in the longest HBCU football rivalry, which allowed them to advance to the CIAA title game. Meanwhile, Virginia Union had already punched its ticket with a resounding 91-0 win over Bluefield State the week prior, setting the stage for a potential showdown.

Virginia State, CIAA

Virginia State struck first when Romelo Williams connected with Tayshaun Porter for a 38-yard touchdown, setting the tone for an aggressive offensive showing. Despite Virginia Union responding with a field goal and a 15-yard touchdown pass from Mark Wright to Reginald Vick Jr., Virginia State continued to surge. Williams showcased his versatility, rushing for a 1-yard touchdown just before halftime, bringing the score to 21-13. In the third quarter, Virginia Union’s Jada Byers made a statement with a powerful 2-yard touchdown run, leveling the score at 21-21 and adding intensity to the rivalry clash.

But Virginia State’s offense didn’t falter. Williams’ deep pass to Malik Hunter for a 91-yard touchdown electrified the crowd and put the Trojans back in control. Shortly afterward, a 23-yard rushing touchdown by Jimmyll Williams extended their lead to 35-21, and Virginia State’s defense held strong against Virginia Union’s final attempts. Though Virginia Union narrowed the gap with a fourth-quarter touchdown, they couldn’t overcome a late interception that sealed Virginia State’s hard-fought victory.

The win marked a thrilling chapter in their rivalry, with both teams now readying for a climactic rematch in the CIAA Championship on November 17 in Salem, Virginia, where pride, history, and the championship title will be on the line for the two Virginia HBCU programs.

Charlotte, NC – With week 9 of football in the rearview and a pivotal week 10 on the horizon, one team in the conference has solidified a spot in the 2024 CIAA Football Championship (Nov. 16th – Salem, VA) with others in tight contention. As it stands, Virginia Union University, Johnson C Smith University & Virginia State University sit in first, second and third place respectively. Regardless of how Week 10 plays out, VUU has already earned a spot in the CIAA Championship, however, final seedings and regular season champions are yet to be finalized.

Lets take a look below at the possible week 10 scenarios:

CIAA Virginia Union Johnson C Smith Virginia State

1. If VUU wins & JCSU wins: Both teams would advance to the Championship. At 7-0, Virginia Union would win the regular season and be the #1 seed in the Championship. At 6-1, Johnson C Smith would earn the #2 seed. Note, with the adjusted 7-game conference schedule, the VUU vs. JCSU game that took place on September 21st was denoted a conference game for JCSU only and not VUU.
Championship Game: #1 VUU (7-0) vs. #2 JCSU (6-1)

2. If VUU wins, JCSU loses & WSSU wins: At 7-0, VUU would win the regular season and be the #1 seed in the Championship. JCSU, VSU & WSSU would be tied at 5-2, however, JCSU would advance as determined by head-to-head against both VSU & WSSU.
Championship Game: #1 VUU (7-0) vs. #2 JCSU (5-2)

3. If VUU loses & JCSU loses: VSU & VUU will both advance to the Championship. With both teams at 6-1, they would be co-champions of the regular season and Virginia State would be the #1 seed in the Championship as determined by head-to-head.
Championship Game: #1 VSU (6-1) vs. #2 VUU (6-1)

4. If VUU loses & JCSU wins: VSU, VUU & JCSU would be co-champions of the regular season, however, this creates a 3-way tie for Championship consideration. To determine who moves on to the Championship, the first tiebreaker is winning percentage within the 7-game conference schedule, with each team at 6-1, all would be tied. The next tiebreaker is head-to-head competition, also, within the 7-game conference schedule. In this case, because VSU, VUU & JCSU did not all compete head-to-head within the 7-game conference schedule, head-to-head competition cannot be considered. The next tie breaker is point differential against common opponents. VSU, VUU & JCSU only had one common opponent, Bluefield State. At +91, VUU would move on to the Championship. VSU & JCSU remain tied +39. With only VSU & JCSU in contention for the final Championship spot, the tie breaker procedures reset between the two teams. The first tiebreaker, conference winning percentage, would remain tied. However, the second tiebreaker, head-to-head favors JCSU. JCSU would move on to the Championship as the #2 seed.
Championship Game: #1 VUU (6-1) vs. #2 JCSU (6-1)

HBCU Virginia State University (VSU) displayed their prowess in a dominating 55-0 victory over Lincoln University (PA) at LU Football Stadium.

VSU took control early, scoring four touchdowns in the first quarter alone, setting the tone for a game that would cement their position in HBCU football. Romelo Williams led VSU’s offense, contributing two passing touchdowns and a rushing touchdown, while their defense kept Lincoln scoreless throughout the game. This decisive win underscored VSU’s strength and depth as an HBCU program, with contributions across offense, defense, and special teams.

HBCU, Virginia State

By halftime, VSU had amassed a 41-0 lead, showcasing why they are a force within HBCU athletics. Lincoln struggled to mount any substantial offensive drives, managing only 20 passing yards and 32 rushing yards for the entire game. Meanwhile, VSU recorded 397 total offensive yards, with standout performances from players like Marquis Smith and Kevin Gayles, each securing receiving touchdowns. The game highlighted VSU’s defensive tenacity, especially through KJ McNeil, who scored on a fumble recovery in the first quarter, further extending VSU’s lead.

VSU’s victory over Lincoln not only reflects the school’s commitment to excellence in HBCU sports but also sets up an exciting showdown.

With this win, Virginia State University (6-3, 5-1 CIAA) will host Virginia Union University on Saturday, Nov. 9. The stakes are high, as both HBCUs will compete for a chance to advance to the CIAA championship game. This upcoming matchup promises to be a thrilling contest between two historic rival programs, with a championship bid on the line.

About the judges

No adjudicator is allowed to judge (Musicality, Pictures, Drill and Design, Percussion, Drum Majors, and Auxiliary) in a category more than once in a regular season. In summary, each of the five major adjudication areas will all have different judges for each month of the regular season. For example, if a committee member judges Musicality in Division I in September, he/she will not be able to judge that category in October or November. They will move to a different category in the next month. This has been a standard practice of the committee since the inaugural BOTY.

Other than the BOTY Committee Chairs, none of the adjudicators know the final results of the “overall” monthly rankings until they are made public by ESPN and HBCUGameday. Once adjudicators have reviewed videos, they submit scores individually and electronically without group or committee conversation. Any discussion or conversation regarding the rankings must be conducted through our chairs prior to reviewing or scoring the bands.

Auxiliary scores are based on the median or “average” of the combined totals. If the majorettes score 29, the flags 30, and dancers 31, the total auxiliary score is 30. If the dancers score 29 and the flags score 30, the total auxiliary score is 29.5. If a team only has one auxiliary unit that scores 30, their final score is 30. The units with multiple auxiliaries do not get extra points.

Adjudicators (thus far) for the College/HBCU and High School BOTY include:

What’s Next for ESPN Band of the Year?

With just a few months until the final showdown in Atlanta, the 2024 ESPN Band of the Year competition is closer than ever. Each performance now counts as bands refine their shows and push for a spot in the top rankings. The top two Division I bands will compete on December 13 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, right before the Cricket Celebration Bowl, for the ultimate title.

The Top five band bands at the top of our cumulative rankings in November will all be in the running to come to Atlanta for the BOTY competition. Their ranking position in the polls will be the number one factor in receiving an invitation to Atlanta. However, the BOTY committee can also consider other intangibles as it relates to the selection of the final two bands. The goal for every band is to make it to the Top 5 in November, so they can be a part of the conversation to come to Atlanta.

“This season’s BOTY promises to be one of the best yet,” said Professor Dowell Taylor, Jackson State University Director Emeritus and ESPN BOTY Chair. “Even at this early stage in the process, the renewed emphasis on the halftime field experience and the overall musical presentation has been phenomenal and very encouraging. Because most bands are so very close in the ratings. this will be a grueling process and labor of love for the adjudicators. And this is what it’s all about.”

HBCU fans are watching closely as the 2024 CIAA football season enters its final stretch. The race for the championship is down to the wire as Johnson C. Smith, Virginia Union and Virginia State position themselves for a spot in the CIAA Championship Game. With only two weeks left, the stakes are higher than ever, and every game counts.

The Top Contenders

Johnson C. Smith has put together a flawless season so far, boasting an 8-0 record overall and 5-0 in the CIAA. They’ve claimed wins over the conference’s top teams, including Virginia Union, Virginia State, and Winston-Salem State. However, their victory over Virginia Union was not counted as a conference game, which leaves Virginia Union technically undefeated in the CIAA as well.

Virginia Union, currently 5-0 in conference play and 6-2 overall, is hot on Johnson C. Smith’s heels. They’ve also displayed strength, particularly with a key win over Winston-Salem State. Their final regular-season matchup is against Virginia State, a game with massive implications for both teams.

Virginia State stands at 4-1 in the CIAA, with a 5-3 overall record. It faced Winston-Salem State but took a loss in a game that didn’t impact its conference standings. This gives Virginia State an extra boost in their run for the title. Their season-ender against Virginia Union will be one of the most anticipated games of the season, as both teams are fighting for a top-two finish.

Winston-Salem State is not technically out of contention with a 4-2 conference record and a 6-3 overall record. While it has had a strong season, a recent loss has put them just a step behind the top three contenders. It would need the three teams ahead of it to end the season with two conference losses as its win at Virginia State earlier in the season didn’t count as a loss for VSU.

Remaining Challenges and Final Games

Johnson C. Smith faces Fayetteville State next, a team with a strong championship history, having been a staple in the CIAA Championship Game for the past few seasons. This could be Johnson C. Smith’s toughest game yet, as Fayetteville State is known for delivering under high-stakes situations. After that, Johnson C. Smith closes their regular season against Livingstone in a classic rivalry game that could add one final twist to their undefeated run.

Johnson C. Smith, HBCU Gameday, CIAA

For Virginia Union and Virginia State, their season-ending showdown could be a de facto playoff. If both teams maintain their records, this game will likely decide who earns a championship slot. The potential for an intense battle adds further excitement to an already competitive season.

CIAA Championship Hopes on the Line

As the 2024 CIAA season races toward its conclusion, these HBCU teams are each pushing to secure their place in the championship. With only two spots available, every play, every drive, and every game could shape the final outcome. While Johnson C. Smith and Virginia Union are currently in control, the unpredictable nature of college football means that anything can happen in these final weeks.

Whoever prevails will not only earn the CIAA title but also bring pride to their HBCU, representing the top level of talent and competition in the conference.

As we head into Week Eight of CIAA football, the standings reflect a dynamic and competitive season in HBCU football, shaped by both strong performances and significant off-field developments. Johnson C. Smith leads the way, undefeated at 7-0 overall and 4-0 in conference play after being Shaw on Saturday, solidifying its position as one of the top HBCU programs this year. Virginia Union, also 4-0 in the CIAA and 5-2 overall, has emerged as another dominant force, riding a four-game win streak.

A key factor affecting the standings this season has been the loss of Saint Augustine’s football program. Their absence has caused the league to shift from an eight-game conference format to seven-games. Notably, Virginia Union and Virginia State both benefitted when their Week Three losses to CIAA opponents did not count toward conference standings due to the adjustments. Virginia Union’s loss to Johnson C. Smith and Virginia State’s loss to Winston-Salem State were both excluded from the CIAA record, keeping both teams in a strong position despite early setbacks. The wins did count for JCSU and WSSU, who are set to meet on Saturday for a showdown that could go a long way to determining who makes the CIAA title game.

Winston-Salem State remains in the hunt with a 4-1 conference record and 6-2 overall, trailing closely behind Johnson C. Smith and Virginia Union. Virginia State, despite a 4-3 overall record, is 3-1 in conference play and still a strong contender as the season progresses.

Meanwhile, other HBCU programs like Livingstone (3-2 CIAA) and Shaw (2-3 CIAA) are trying to find consistency as they navigate a tough schedule.

Fayetteville State, Bowie State — two longtime Division II HBCU powers — and others are working to turn their seasons around and play spoiler. As we head into the final stretch, the CIAA standings reflect the resilience and competitiveness of these HBCU teams, each vying for a chance to make their mark in a season defined by change and opportunity.

Virginia State University, the CIAA, Division II and the HBCU family have endured a great loss.

Mrs. Peggy Davis, who spent nearly three decades at VSU, passed away on Wednesday morning. VSU President Dr. Makola M. Abdullah sent the following letter following news of her passing.

Trojan Family,

It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the passing of Virginia State University Associate Vice President for Athletics, Mrs. Peggy Davis. Mrs. Davis passed away early this morning. For more than 27 years, she has been an integral leader of our Athletics Department, leading with exceptional dedication and compassion for our student-athletes.

Words cannot fully capture what Mrs. Davis meant to Virginia State University. She was a beacon of hope, an inspiring leader, and a champion for our student-athletes, always working to ensure their success in the classroom, in their athletic pursuits, and after graduation. Her unwavering dedication to the mission of our University, her extraordinary achievements, and her selflessness in always putting others first will never be forgotten. Mrs. Davis was one of the most highly respected professionals of her time and was held in the highest esteem on a local, regional, and national level.

In 2020, Mrs. Davis guided our department to national recognition as the recipient of the NCAA Division II Award of Excellence. The following year, she was honored with the 2021 Minority Opportunities Athletic Association (MOAA) Distinguished Service Award for her efforts to promote diversity and inclusion in intercollegiate athletics. In addition, she was named CIAA Athletic Director of the Year seven times. Mrs. Davis also served as Interim Commissioner of the CIAA, becoming the first woman to lead the 12-member athletic conference.

Under her leadership, the Trojans earned twenty NCAA Division II tournament appearances, twenty-six CIAA Championship titles, twenty CIAA Divisional titles, and forty-four Coach of the Year honors.

On behalf of the entire VSU community, the administration extends its deepest sympathies for this tremendous loss. We know you join us in expressing our condolences to Mrs. Davis’ family, friends, the athletic department, and the Trojan family. We will hold them in our thoughts as we honor the life and legacy of an extraordinary woman who gave so much to our University.

In a key HBCU football matchup, the Virginia State Trojans secured a 38-17 victory over the Bowie State Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon at Rogers Stadium. With the win, Virginia State improved to 3-3 overall and 2-2 in the CIAA, keeping its slim conference championship hopes alive. Meanwhile, Bowie State’s loss drops them to 1-5 on the season and 1-3 in CIAA play, dimming their postseason chances and adding to the challenges in this competitive HBCU football season.

Virginia State started fast, building a 24-0 lead by halftime. Quarterback Romelo Williams spearheaded the Trojans’ offense, throwing for 291 yards and two touchdowns. Early in the first quarter, Williams connected with Ajenavi Byrd for a 37-yard touchdown, followed by a 47-yard strike to Malik Hunter, pushing Virginia State ahead 14-0. Jimmyll Williams added a 1-yard rushing touchdown just before halftime, extending the lead to 24-0.

Bowie State showed signs of life in the second half. Curtis Murray scored on a 3-yard touchdown run with 11:31 remaining in the third quarter to cut the deficit to 24-7. However, Virginia State quickly responded with an 11-yard touchdown scramble by Romelo Williams, followed by another rushing touchdown from Jimmyll Williams, making it 38-7.

The Bulldogs continued to fight in the fourth quarter. Kevin Taylor capped a 64-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown run, narrowing the score to 38-17 with 6:04 left in the game. Despite their late push, Bowie State’s struggles on third down—converting only 1 of 11 attempts—hampered their comeback effort. Virginia State, meanwhile, was efficient, converting 8 of 18 third downs to control the tempo.

Micah Robinson led the Bowie State offense, rushing for 33 yards and adding 32 receiving yards. Murray contributed 31 rushing yards along with his touchdown, and Joseph Towler recorded 54 receiving yards for the Bulldogs. On defense, Jamal Jones delivered two sacks, a forced fumble, and five total tackles, while the unit as a whole recorded four sacks and eight tackles for loss, limiting Virginia State to 130 rushing yards.

This win keeps Virginia State’s CIAA title hopes alive, improving their conference record to 2-1. Bowie State, now 1-3 in CIAA play, faces a tough path ahead to remain competitive. Both teams will look to regroup as they continue through the HBCU football season.

Bowie State returns home next week to face Bluefield State for their homecoming game on October 19 at Bulldogs Stadium. The game will kick off at 1 p.m. and will be broadcast live on HBCU GO TV. Meanwhile, Virginia State aims to carry the momentum forward as they continue their pursuit of the CIAA championship.

Virginia State and Bowie State are set to clash on October 12 in a key HBCU football matchup. Virginia State, 2-3 overall and 1-1 in conference play, seeks to build momentum, while Bowie State, 1-4 overall and winless in the CIAA, aims to reverse their fortunes. Both teams need a win, but the pressure is on Bowie State to turn their season around.

Storylines

 1. Virginia State’s Defensive Strength: The Trojans’ defense has been strong, racking up 11 sacks on the season. Defensive standouts like Cameron Davis and Mustapha Coly will look to dominate Bowie State’s offense, which has struggled to generate consistent production.
 2. Bowie State’s Offensive Woes: Bowie State has averaged just 17.8 points per game while allowing 22.4. This game is crucial for Bowie State’s offense to step up, particularly against a Virginia State team that has proven difficult to break down defensively.
 3. Quarterback Duel: Virginia State’s Romelo Williams has thrown for 869 yards and 8 touchdowns, giving the Trojans a balanced offensive attack. Bowie State’s defense must find a way to limit his big-play potential.

Key Matchups

 1. Jimmyll Williams vs. Bowie State’s Defense: Virginia State’s Jimmyll Williams leads the ground game with 536 rushing yards and 5 touchdowns. Bowie State’s front seven must rise to the occasion to contain him.
 2. Romelo Williams vs. Bowie State Secondary: Williams has been efficient through the air, connecting with playmakers like Kevin Gayles (251 yards, 5 TDs). Bowie State’s secondary will need a standout performance to limit the Trojan’s passing attack.
 3. Virginia State’s Defensive Line vs. Bowie State O-Line: The Trojans have been aggressive up front, with 11 sacks this season. Bowie State’s offensive line must protect their quarterback to stay competitive.

Key Players to Watch

 • Virginia State: Jimmyll Williams (RB): With 536 yards on the ground and 5 TDs, Williams is the engine of the Virginia State offense.
 • Virginia State: Romelo Williams (QB): Williams has thrown for 869 yards and 8 TDs, connecting with top targets like Kevin Gayles.
 • Bowie State: Defensive Line: Their ability to pressure Romelo Williams will be critical in keeping Bowie State in the game.

This HBCU football matchup has high stakes for both teams. Virginia State looks to climb the CIAA standings, while Bowie State hopes to stop the bleeding and earn their first conference win. Expect a hard-fought battle as these rivals square off.

In a pivotal D2 HBCU football matchup within the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA), Virginia State University secured a crucial 35-18 victory over Fayetteville State University at Rogers Stadium in Ettrick, Virginia. Virginia State, entering the game as the preseason #1 CIAA team, aimed to bounce back from a disappointing loss to Winston-Salem State University. Meanwhile, Fayetteville State ranked #3 in the CIAA in the preseason and sought to maintain its momentum after a strong start.

Statistics 1 2 3 4 OT Total

Romelo Williams, Virginia State’s quarterback, emerged as the standout player, throwing for 231 yards and four touchdowns. His top target, Kevin Gayles, excelled with three touchdown catches, amassing 149 receiving yards. Two of Gayles’ scores were explosive, coming on 63 and 68 yards catches, which helped the Trojans establish an early lead and keep the pressure on Fayetteville State.

Fayetteville State struck first with a 19-yard touchdown pass from Joe Owens Jr. to Kahlil Ashley-Diarrah. However, the Broncos struggled to find a consistent offensive rhythm afterward. Owens Jr. finished the game with 104 passing yards, going 11 for 20 with one touchdown and one interception. Backup quarterback Demari Daniels managed a late touchdown pass to Emanuel Ortega-Garcia, but it came too late to alter the outcome. Virginia State’s defense was relentless, recording four sacks and holding the Broncos to just 81 rushing yards on 35 attempts.

On the ground, Virginia State also made an impact, rushing for 154 yards. Jimmyll Williams contributed a rushing touchdown with 79 yards on 19 carries, while Tylique Ray added 30 yards on nine carries. The Trojans controlled the line of scrimmage, allowing Williams to find his receivers downfield effectively. Tayshaun Porter capped off the scoring with a 17-yard touchdown catch in the fourth quarter, solidifying the win.

This critical victory elevates Virginia State’s record to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in CIAA play. Fayetteville State drops to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the CIAA, leaving them with work to do as they regroup. Both teams will look to build on their performances in upcoming matchups as the CIAA season unfolds.

What does this win mean in the D2 HBCU football landscape?

In an intense and hard-fought contest, Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) pulled off a dramatic 15-14 victory over Virginia State University (VSU) with a clutch field goal in the final seconds. WSSU overcame a 14-6 deficit late in the fourth quarter to stun the Trojans in a game that went down to the wire.

First Half

Winston-Salem State struck first, converting a field goal from 30 yards by Gilberto Lorenzana with 14:42 left in the second quarter to take a 3-0 lead. The Rams’ defense held strong early, but Virginia State responded with a determined ground attack. At 11:01 in the second quarter, VSU’s Tylique Ray capped off a 7-yard touchdown run, followed by a successful extra point from Joshua Campbell, putting the Trojans ahead 7-3.

Winston-Salem’s offense struggled to find the end zone for the remainder of the first half, and VSU went into halftime holding a slim 7-3 advantage.

Third Quarter Action

The second half began with both teams jockeying for momentum. Midway through the third quarter, Lorenzana delivered his second field goal of the game—a 37-yard kick that brought WSSU within one point at 7-6 with 3:11 left in the third. The Rams stayed in striking distance, setting the stage for an exciting final quarter.

Fourth Quarter Drama

Early in the fourth quarter, Virginia State extended its lead when Ray broke loose again, this time with a 14-yard touchdown run. Campbell’s extra point put the Trojans up 14-6 with 7:28 left in the game, and it seemed as though Virginia State was poised to close out the victory.

However, Winston-Salem State quickly responded in spectacular fashion. Less than 30 seconds after VSU’s touchdown, WSSU’s Timothy “TJ” Ruff powered his way through the Trojan defense for a 78-yard touchdown run. Ruff’s big play brought the Rams back to within two points, 14-12. Though WSSU missed the opportunity to tie the game with a two-point conversion, the Rams had life and a chance to win.

The Final Stand

With time winding down, the Rams marched down the field on a critical drive, setting up Lorenzana for a game-winning 20-yard field goal attempt with just three seconds left on the clock. Lorenzana, who had been perfect all night, calmly drilled the kick through the uprights, giving WSSU the 15-14 lead and silencing the Virginia State crowd.

The win marks a huge victory for Winston-Salem State, whose resilience and late-game heroics sealed their thrilling comeback. VSU’s strong rushing performance by Tylique Ray wasn’t enough, as the Rams held off the Trojans and pulled out a nail-biter on the road.

Key Players:

 • Gilberto Lorenzana (WSSU): 3/3 on field goals, including the game-winner.
 • Timothy “TJ” Ruff (WSSU): 78-yard rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter.
 • Tylique Ray (VSU): Two rushing touchdowns, including a 14-yarder in the final quarter.

This win is a testament to Winston-Salem State’s never-give-up attitude and Lorenzana’s reliable leg, proving crucial in their narrow victory over Virginia State.

Defensively, both teams made crucial plays. Virginia State’s Donavan Howard had a key interception return of 50 yards, while Norfolk State’s Jayden Smith contributed with an interception, highlighting the defensive intensity.

Special teams played a role, with Josuah Campbell making a 28-yard field goal and converting all his extra points for Virginia State. Norfolk State’s Grandin Willcox, though missing a field goal attempt, was perfect on his extra points.

Final Thoughts

The game was a showcase of competitive football, with both teams exhibiting strong offensive and defensive play. Norfolk State’s ability to make critical plays in the fourth quarter secured their victory, while Virginia State’s late-game efforts demonstrated their resilience. Both teams contributed to a gripping and closely-fought contest that kept fans on the edge of their seats until the final whistle.

Next up for Virginia State is a bye week followed by hosting Winston-Salem State on September 21. Norfolk State will revisit an old rivalry against Hampton next weekend in the Battle of the Bay.

In a stunning display of dominance, Virginia Union University (VUU) showcased its prowess in HBCU football by overwhelming Kentucky State University (KSU) with an astounding 69 unanswered points. After an early 7-0 deficit, VUU quickly regrouped and unleashed a relentless offensive and defensive assault that left KYSU reeling.

The HBCU matchup started with Kentucky State scoring first, but VUU’s Jada Byers set the tone for the rest of the game with a 46-yard touchdown run, tying the score and igniting Virginia Union’s offense. Byers continued to shine, contributing significantly to VUU’s 376 rushing yards, with 211 yards and three touchdowns on just 14 carries.

Virginia Union, HBCU
R.J. Rosales threw for two touchdowns.

VUU’s defense was equally impressive, holding KSU to a mere 62 rushing yards while forcing multiple turnovers. The Panthers’ defense returned two interceptions for touchdowns, further widening the gap and showcasing their dominance in this HBCU clash.

Quarterback RJ Rosales added to the onslaught, throwing for 233 yards and two touchdowns, helping VUU achieve a balanced attack that KYSU simply couldn’t counter. The game was a testament to VUU’s preparation and execution, as they controlled every aspect of the game from the second quarter onward.

This HBCU showdown serves as a stark reminder of Virginia Union’s strength and determination, leaving KYSU with much to ponder as they regroup for their next challenge. Virginia Union, on the other hand, will look to build on this momentum as they continue their quest for HBCU football supremacy this season.

Ettrick, Va.- Veteran HBCU football and track star Rayquan Smith of Virginia State University has announced his nomination as a candidate for the 2025 Forbes 30 under 30 list in the sports category for his work in the NIL space over the past four years.

Smith hit the ground running once the Name, Image, and Likeness rules were passed for college athletes in July of 2021, becoming a brand ambassador for dozens of companies while advocating for deals for other HBCU athletes, earning him the title of the “King of NIL,” now, four years later, he has the possibility of being named to the Forbes 30 under 30 list.

“When it came out, I just said – I’ve been doing it – so I might as well get paid for doing it now,” Smith told WAVY-TV in 2021.

“It don’t matter how big the brand it is, how small the brand is – if it fits me, I’m going to stick with it. I’m gonna go with it, and hopefully, it will be a long-term deal and go a long way… My big, main goal, is to help every HBCU athlete get on some type of deal or sponsorship, I feel like we’re not as big as a Power Five school, so I’m trying to make an example that we can get deals no matter what school you’re at.”

Rayquan Smith became the first HBCU athlete to sign an endorsement deal with sneaker giant Eastbay, who later featured HBCU football athletes in a campaign at the HBCU combine.

Since starting his NIL journey, Rayquan Smith has landed over 80 NIL deals from brands like Coach, Pedialyte, Crocs, and CVS and has co-founded his own NIL service “SponsorPro” a digital marketplace where brands and athletes unite for game-changing partnerships through their digital marketplace.

HBCU NIL Rayquan Smith Forbes 30 under 30

“SponsorPro sets itself apart with a platform that customizes NIL chances for athletes by fusing cutting-edge technology with a personalized touch,” Smith told Sports Illustrated. “With the use of analytics and a connection-building approach, SponsorPro distinguishes itself by providing meaningful relationships that complement the individual identities and values of each athlete. We place a high value on community development, openness, and simplicity to provide an unmatched experience in the congested NIL platform market.”

Smith started his HBCU football career at Norfolk State, breaking out in 2019 as a freshman with a 62-yard run against North Carolina A&T with his first carry in college. He finished the year ranked second on the team with 430 rushing yards but COVID-19 and injuries caused the Richmond, Va. native to hit the transfer portal, landing at one of Norfolk State’s biggest rivals, Virginia State University, where he helped the track program win its third straight CIAA Championship in 2023.

Virginia State has climbed to the top of the CIAA football rankings, overtaking the defending champion Virginia Union, which is predicted second to it’s in-state HBCU rival in 2024. This shift in rankings promises an exhilarating season as both teams have eyes for the CIAA championship.

Under the guidance of Dr. Henry Frazier, the Virginia State is embracing a challenging schedule against the defending SIAC champion and an FCS HBCU.

“We have a tough schedule, starting with Benedict and Norfolk State,” Frazier said.

Frazier emphasizes building toughness within his team which went 8-2 in 2023.

“Last year, I had a tough squad with graduate students. This year, it’s on me to ensure my team remains resilient,” he explained.

HBCU conference CIAA Trophy

The Virginia Union, led by Dr. Alvin Parker, return nine starters on both offense and defense. With the top defense in the CIAA last season, the VUU is well-positioned for success. Key players include Isaac Anderson and Isaiah Dickens.

“Isaac Anderson is one of the best in the league,” Parker noted.

Virginia Union’s offense is powered by Jada Byers, a 2022 Harlon Hill finalist and the CIAA’s rushing leader in 2023. Supported by a formidable offensive line, Byers remains a crucial asset for the VUU.

Virginia State led the CIAA in total offense last season, with Virginia Union close behind. Despite both teams losing their starting quarterbacks, their offensive capabilities are expected to remain strong. Virginia Union’s defense, featuring key players like Anderson and Jamal Graham, should continue to be a dominant force.

Virginia State’s offensive lineman Bruno Onwuazor, who earned Second-Team All-CIAA honors last season, has also been named to the preseason All-CIAA team, underscoring his importance to the VSU.

The Panthers have a three-game winning streak against the Trojans, including a decisive 30-20 victory in Richmond. This streak adds extra motivation for the Trojans as they aim to break the Panthers’ dominance.

The Virginia State’s rise to the top ranking sets up an exciting CIAA football season. With Dr. Frazier’s strategic leadership, the Trojans are expected to challenge the Panthers, the reigning champions.

With Election Day 2024 getting closer and closer every day, the first historically black college or university (HBCU) selected to host a presidential debate is waiting to see if it will happen.

Virginia State University, an HBCU located just outside of Petersburg, VA, was previously selected to host a debate this fall. But that may now be in jeopardy.

VSU released the following statement via its official Twitter/X page on Wednesday:

Virginia State University posted this release on Wednesday afternoon regarding the debate expected this October at the HBCU.

Virginia State University is disappointed to hear media reports suggesting that the U.S. presidential candidates may not participate in the scheduled October 1, 2024, debate at VSU.

A presidential debate at VSU is a huge win, not only for our students and campus community but for the greater community in general.

As the first historically black college or university (HBCU) ever selected to host a general election U.S. presidential debate, VSU recognizes the event’s significance and welcomes the opportunity to contribute to the democratic process.

We will continue to work closely with the Commission on Presidential Debates and other stakeholders as we assess this situation. VSU will continue to provide updates and further details as they become available.

Virginia State cornerback Willie Drew is one of two HBCU prospects participating in the 2024 NFL Combine and the 2023 CIAA Defensive Player of the Year put up some impressive numbers in the 40-yard dash and 10-yard split.

The Smithfield, Virginia native had what CBS Sports analyst Emory Hunt called, “Two excellent runs.”

On the first attempt, Drew ran an unofficial 40-yard dash time of 4.48, then backed it up by shaving .2 seconds from his time and recording an official 4.46 with a 1.49-second 10-yard split.

The 10-yard split is a measure of a player’s explosiveness off the line of scrimmage, and the record for the fastest time is held by DK Metcalf who posted a time of 1.45 seconds over the first 10 yards of his 40-yard sprint.

Drew’s 40-time of 4.46 ranks 13th out of the 29 cornerbacks who ran the 40-yard dash at the combine and his 10-yard split was tied for third fastest in the position group.

The NFL.com prospect tracker has Drew with a 5.95 prospect grade that has him listed as an “Average Backup Or Special-Teamer” and the NFL Next-Gen State Score Breakdown has his 2024 Combine CB Rank at 26th.

Willie Drew will still have a steep hill to climb as a Division II HBCU football player, but he proved that he has legit NFL speed and elite burst within a talented group of corners available in the 20324 NFL Draft.

Below is the draft analysis for Virginia State cornerback Willie from NFL Analyst Lance Zierlein on NFL.com

Overview

Rangy cornerback whose length often makes up for a lack of play strength when it’s time to challenge the 50/50 ball. Drew mirrors the release with accuracy from press and has the fluidity and agility to maneuver naturally around the field from a backpedal. He played against a lower level of competition, but his ball skills are translatable at a higher level. He’s instinctive pre-throw and competitive at the catch point with natural hands to flip the field on interceptions. Drew will need to improve his play strength and prove he can run with vertical challengers, but he has the tools to make it in the league.

Strengths

 • Premium ball production with heaping amounts of takeaways and breakups.
 • Bends and slides easily to match and slow receiver’s release from press.
 • Athlete with agile feet and smooth lateral movements from his pedal.
 • Tracks and attacks the deep throw with above-average accuracy.
 • Lower-body twitch to close quickly and squeeze throwing windows.

Weaknesses

 • Can be overtaken by size and power from press.
 • Small hitch in his hip flip to turn and sprint with deep targets.
 • Slight stall to plant and drive from the top of his drop.
 • Needs to become more proactive in attacking run blocks.

The program focuses on unity and growth.

Virginia State University women’s lacrosse started its program with a resounding success. VSU defeated fellow HBCU UDC 17-7 on Feb. 17 for its first win in program history. The program is led by former Howard University lacrosse star Ashley Lawrence after being formed in late 2022.

Our Steven J. Gaither sat down with Lawrence to discuss the program’s formation, its season-opener and her goals for success. Here is some of what she had to say:

Lawrence said playing lacrosse at Howard helped prepare her for taking over the Virginia State University women’s lacrosse program.

“I think that being at an HBCU and playing a sport that’s not common in the minority population at an HBCU was a different experience,” Lawrence said. “I loved it and definitely opened my eyes to a lot of different things the university did, just playing at that level. Because Howard is a D-1 level, so we played against big programs. But just trying to find our way and that channel of travel of, different experiences and things like that – it was a good eye-opener and I loved it. I think it definitely prepped me for this year.

Virginia State University lacrosse HBCU

Most Virginia State University women’s lacrosse players are freshmen.

“The transition from high school to college – anything – is always so crazy and so chaotic and if you’re not ready or if you don’t know, then it’s always kind of like an uphill battle. So I think that that was one of the struggles that we had initially. but once the girls kind of got the flow and they kind of understood, like what those little pieces are, we’re still building that.

So, to be able to go to a team where we’re all the same, it was a good feeling. Like it makes you happy.

“I think with the first year and with us having a young team, being able to see them grow together and being able to see them learn each other is really the most important part. So of course, more wins than losses. If we can get through the season where we have this tremendous, phenomenal season, I’m 100 percent all in. But I really just want to see them grow together and I want to see that they can create this foundation.

It was good. I think that for our first time out with being a young team, we have about 15, 16 freshmen. they really showcased what it meant to work as a team. So being able to have that common goal, being able to essentially fight it out and work together and, you know, successfully 17-7. So it was really good is a really good feeling. I definitely think that the girls found that inner peace that they needed.

As one of only four HBCU lacrosse programs, VSU is giving student-athletes a fairly unique opportunity.

A lot of our young ladies come from teams where they are the one and only. And a lot of the things that they struggle with is that they weren’t playing with girls that look like them. So to be able to come somewhere where all 20 of us look the same and all 20 of us think the same and have the same upbringing and have the same thoughts and the same basic kind of all characteristics of the life piece. It makes life a lot easier for them, and it makes the sport a little bit more lovable in a sense.

Virginia Union University’s Kaylen Vines only scored three points in the game, but if he never scores another point, people will be talking about his scoring for a long time to come.

Vines took an in-bounds pass and dunked the ball with 2.2 seconds left to play to tie VUU’s game with Virginia State University on Saturday, February 24, in Petersburg, Va.

Vines then sank a pressure-loaded free throw to give the Panthers a 64-63 win over the Trojans.

The win, coupled with Lincoln University’s loss to Bowie State University, earned the Panthers Co-Champions of the Northern Division of the CIAA in the regular-season finale.

VUU’s Tahj Harding led the Panthers with 20 points while teammate Joshua Caine added 13 points in the win.

Virginia Union’s Travis Vaughn added 11 points while Vines and Jonathan Salazar grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.

“It was a rough, tough game,” said VUU Head Men’s Basketball Coach Jay Butler. “I thought the kids kept fighting to tie the game, they played hard and with a lot of heart. At one point we looked up at the clock and we were down 10, but I told them we were going to play it out and keep fighting.”

Virginia Union will enter the 2024 CIAA Tournament with a 13-17 overall record, but have a 7-3 Northern Division record along with Lincoln to capture the co-championship.

ATLANTA – The inaugural ESPN “Band of The Year” competition could be described many ways, but the best term may have been “organized chaos.” That’s to be expected for a first-of-its-kind event that was band competition-meets-football-game-meets corporate-check cashing showcase.

Four HBCU bands filed into the cavernous Mercedes-Benz Stadium in downtown Atlanta looking to bring home one of two national titles. But none of them did.

The inaugural “Band of the Year” winners for both Division I and Division II were not crowned on Friday night. Instead the result will be announced during Saturday’s broadcast of its ESPN Events parent event – the Celebration Bowl. That announcement was made after two hours of performances on the field and an endless array of check presentations to the four bands who made it to the turf over dozens of others.

A rumbling of murmurs rolled through the crowd once the announcement that the postponement of the announcement of the winners rolled through the loudspeakers.

North Carolina A&T’s Blue and Gold Marching Machine, vying for the Division I title against Jackson State’s Sonic Boom of the South, issued what appeared to be a response to the ruling. The band had already had its “Fifth Quarter” stands performance after the official competition, and was told to load onto its busses. Instead, the BGMM broke out into another song, provoking the Sonic Boom to prepare an impromptu response of its own.

Officials quickly shut that down, reiterating that the bands needed to get to their busses as instructed and that the next band would be docked 30 points on their performance.

“Don’t even think about it,” barked Don Roberts, one of the organizers of the ESPN Band of the Year and a long-time fixture in the Atlanta band world.

Both A&T and Jackson State, as well as the Virginia State “Trojan Explosion” and “The Roar” from Florida Memorial – will have to wait with the rest of the world to see who will bring home the hardware as the judges tabulate the scores.

Fans and bands were politely but firmly ushered out of the dome as preparations had to get underway for the Celebration Bowl, which was set to kick off in just over 15 hours.

As the stadium workers prepared to work into the night to make the magic happen, spectators filed out of the stadium and onto the concourse of the dome with anxious energy and a tinge of bewilderment at the course of events.

A group of North Carolina A&T supporters expressed a mix of excitement and confusion after witnessing the event – particularly with no announcement of winners.

“I mean, some of us are coming to Celebration Bowl but other people aren’t,” one Aggie supporter in a letter jacket shared.

“Facts,” a gentleman with a BGMM (Blue and Gold Marching Machine) shirt interjected. “It’s anticlimactic.”

“And none of the bands are performing at the Celebration Bowl so…

“They bout to go home tomorrow,” a friend added.

“Yeah, so they’re going to find out through social media,” she concluded.

“For an inaugural event – It was quite special,” Barry Harrison said. “Still trying to work out the mechanics of the judging. But the four bands were all excellent in their own way. They all known for their own particular stylings and musicianship. But it was it was quite an event, quite an event. And I’m glad I made the trip from New Orleans to be here to see it.”

Harrison proudly wore a vintage Southern University letterman’s jacket. He revealed he was a percussionist for the marching band under the tutelage of legendary band director Dr. Issac Greggs. Even though his beloved Human Jukebox didn’t make the cut this round, he still felt the need to come support the ESPN Band of The Year.

“Well, when you when you reach a certain age and a certain level, you just want to see all of us succeed. So like I said, I came all the way from New Orleans,” Harrison continued. “I have come here before for the Honda. I’ve come for the Heritage Bowl. I’ve come for the Pioneer Bowl between the CIAA and SIAC. And I’m just that HBCU guy who just would like to see all of us succeed.”

Virginia State University defensive back Willie Drew is the latest prospect from the CIAA to get a shot at the Reese’s Senior Bowl.

Drew was announced as having accepted an invitation to the Reese’s Senior Bowl on Tuesday afternoon.

Willie Drew is a 6’0 graduate student who transferred to the CIAA program from Division I James Madison. Drew totaled 22 passes defended with six interceptions which lead all the CIAA, he also totaled 34 tackles and one forced fumble. He helped lead Virginia State University to an 8-2 record and was named CIAA Defensive Player of The Year.

Being invited to the Senior Bowl is a big honor for any player, but especially an HBCU player at the Division II level. Drew was also invited to the East-West Shrine Game, another premiere showcase for NFL prospects.

Drew’s invitation comes just two years after another big, talented cornerback from the CIAA played in the game. Fayetteville State defensive back Joshua Williams was invited to the game back in 2021, and was drafted in the fourth round by the Kansas City Chiefs months after playing in the 2022 game. Drew could walk a similar path in 2024 if all goes well.

HBCU homecoming season has ended and alumni and students packed their stadiums to support their schools. Tuskegee, Jackson State, Alabama A&M, Norfolk State and Florida A&M lead all HBCUs in homecoming football game attendance, but many schools experienced great turnouts.

Jackson State leads the SWAC with nearly 30k. That’s an impressive number, but it is a significant drop from its 2022 number. Norfolk State got a slight bump as it led the MEAC. North Carolina A&T got another sellout it’s first season in the CAA.

Here are the numbers of attendance at each HBCU homecoming game. All numbers were taken from official box scores from each school’s athletic website.

RICHMOND, VA– Virginia Union, at long last, is finally headed back to the CIAA title game.

VUU got off to a fast start and took advantage of woeful special teams play to beat rival Virginia State 30-20 in front of a capacity crowd at Hovey Stadium on Saturday in Richmond. Virginia Union will meet defending CIAA champion Fayetteville State in the CIAA title game in Salem, VA on Nov. 11. FSU beat VUU at home in September.

Virginia Union

Christian Reid threw four touchdown passes for Virginia Union, including one to Jada Byers. Byers finished the day with 155 yards on 27 rushes. Roy Jackson led VUU with 127 yards on three catches, including a score.

VSU had 465 yards of total offense to VUU’s 337, but it had special teams issues all day. The first field goal attempt hit the upright. Its second PAT was blocked and returned for two points. Another was blocked and returned in the third quarter, but was overpowered by a VUU penalty. Kyle Miller missed two field goals in the fourth.

Virginia State finishes the regular season 8-2. Virginia Union improves to 9-1 as it returns to the CIAA title game for the first time since 2010. Its last CIAA title came in 2001.

Even though Fayetteville State has clinched the CIAA Southern Division crown for the sixth straight season, there should be no doubt in anyone’s mind that visiting Winston-Salem State will absolutely come into the game with an “Attitude Check” of their own. This will be the 73rd overall meeting between the WSSU Rams and the FSU Broncos. Winston-Salem State holds a commanding 51-18-3 series advantage, but Fayetteville State has won four of the last five since the 2017 season. Fayetteville State’s strength this season has been on the defensive side of the ball as the Broncos rank second in CIAA team defense, allowing just 12.7 points per game and are tied for first in league sacks with 23. WSSU’s Dylan Lee ranks second in CIAA Passing Yards per Game (185.0) and his FSU counterpart Joe Owens Jr. is 7th overall (120.7). Here's why.

]]>
The initial NCAA Division II regional rankings are out and four of the ten teams in Super Region II are HBCUs.

Benedict College, Fayetteville State, Fort Valley State, Miles College are all on the list, which reflects teams in contention for the NCAA Division II playoffs. The list is not a true ranking in Week Eight, as it is listed in alphabetical order.

Fayetteville State is the lone CIAA school on the list. It has won six games in a row after dropping its first two games, including a 14-point loss to Lenoir-Rhyne.

Virginia State University, Jordan Davis

Ironically, Virginia State and Virginia Union are both tied for the CIAA’s top record at 7-1, but both teams are on the outside-looking in – likely due to their lack of strength of scheduling. VSU’s best win is against 4-4 Tusculum. Virginia Union’s best win is against 4-4 Lincoln (PA). If both teams win on Saturday then the Nov. 4 duel between the two teams should boost the winner into not only the CIAA title game but also keep it in the bid for the Division II playoffs. The loser’s best-case scenario is likely a trip to the newly created Beach Bowl

Valdosta State is set to take on West Florida on Saturday and will matchup against West Georgia on Nov. 11.

Starting next week, the regional rankings will be posted in order that they would be slated to appear.

The CIAA and SIAC used to be in different NCAA Division II Super Regions, but were re-aligned after 2016.

Ettrick, Va.- The Virginia State University football team dropped their first game of the season 17-16 to the Vikings of Elizabeth City State University.

Both teams would trade three and outs on their first drives. ECSU would get the ball with 9:46 left in the first quarter and they would connect on a field goal and that would be the only scoring in the first quarter. The Trojans would answer on the next drive with a quick 7 play 66-yard drive that ended with a Jordan Davis one-yard touchdown run.

With eight minutes until halftime Elizabeth City would get the ball after a VSU punt at the 50-yard line. They only needed one play for the quarterback Donoven Davenport to find a wide-open receiver for a 50-yard catch and run touchdown. Neither team would score again in the second quarter, but ECSU would get the ball on the VSU side of the 50 with under 15 seconds and take three shots to the endzone but the Trojan defense held the line.

Coming out of halftime VSU would get the ball first, but Jordan Davis screen pass meant for Kimo Clarke would be tipped and end up in the arms of a Vikings defender who returned the interception for 25-yards for a touchdown.

Neither team could find much offense in the remainder of the third quarter and entering the fourth quarter VSU would get the ball falling an ECSU fumble. The Trojans would add a field goal on an 8-play 42-yard drive. During the drive three different wide receivers would record a reception.

The VSU defense would then have a late game stop with ECSU on the edge of their own goal line. Following the punt, Roy Jackson III would set up the VSU offense on the 25-yard line with two minutes remaining, after his return. Davis would find Tylique Ray on the first pass for seven yards followed by a three-yard run for Clarke to get the first down. The next play Lucas Nunez would find himself wide open on the one-yard line for the touchdown as he stretched across the goal line, however the ensuing PAT would sail wide left.

VSU would try the onside kick and they had the perfect play call as they were able to recover the ball, but they touched it a yard too soon and ECSU came out for two knees to secure the win.

Former Virginia State University head coach and CIAA champion Lou Anderson has passed away.

Anderson passed away on Friday morning at the age of 87. He was a football fixture in Richmond, VA for more than half a century.

The Richmond, VA native attended historically black Maggie Walker High School before starting at Kitrell Junior College in North Carolina. He would finish his collegiate career at Claflin (SC) where he played both football and basketball.

Anderson spent 20 years as a head coach in the RVA area before taking over the program at Virginia State University. He led VSU from 1990 through 2001, winning back-to-back CIAA titles in 1995 and 1996. He was twice named CIAA Coach of The Year.

“Coach Anderson has touched the lives of not only his former football players, but many others throughout the VSU community,” former Virginia State athlete and current Florida A&M University VP of Athletics Tiffani-Dawn Sykes said in an awards ceremony in 2018. “He was always a class act – a man of great integrity who put the educational interests of students front and center.”

Anderson was inducted into the John McLendon, CIAA Hall of Fame in 2013.

Bowie, Md.- The Virginia State University football team traveled to Bowie State to look for revenge for last season’s 41-14 loss. Behing Kimo Clarkes’ four touchdown’s the Trojans remained undefeated with a final score of 44-16.

Following the open kickoff Bowie State returned it a touchdown. BSU would then attempt a two-point conversion and Jakari Joyce would pick it off and return it all the way for VSU to get on the board. Then another special team’s touchdown for Bowie would put them back on top before VSU answered with a Kyle Miller field goal.

Following a BSU touchdown, Virginia State would take over on their own 25-yard line. It would only take one play for Clarke to run 75 yards for a touchdown. That would end the scoring for the first quarter.

Then on Virginia State’s second drive in the second quarter Clarke went for another long touchdown as on the third and final play of the drive he went on a 65-yard touchdown run. That made the score 23-13. Bowie would tack on a field goal just before halftime.

Virginia State University, Jordan Davis

Going into the third quarter Bowie State had not given up any points, that changed when late in the quarter Clarke scored his third touchdown of the game to make it 30-14. Jordan Davis who started at quarterback for the Trojans decided he wanted to get in on the scoring as he delivered the dagger in the fourth quarter with a 36-yard touchdown pass to Tayshau Porter. Clarke would score his final touchdown with just a minute and 24 second remaining to cap off a drive where he had 55 yard rushing.

On the defensive side of the ball Cameron Davis ended with seven total tackles, five tackles for loss and three and a half sacks as he was in the backfield all game long.

With the win VSU moves to 6-0 overall and 4-0 in conference play. Bowie State drops to 3-3 overall and 2-2 in conference play. With the win Virginia State is now in control of the northern division of the CIAA as the only undefeated team remaining.

Virginia State returns home for a three-game home stand starting with homecoming against the newcomer to the CIAA Bluefield State with kickoff scheduled for 2:00 p.m.

Guilford College administration is denying claims ‘racial remarks’ were made against Virginia State University soccer students at a recent soccer game.

Members of the Virginia State University women’s soccer team claimed that racial slurs were yelled at them during a Sept. 26 game on the Greensboro, NC campus. Guilford College President Kyle Farmbry issued an apology to Virginia State University President Makola M. Abdullah for the remarks and alerting him of an investigation into the incident. The school’s director of athletics also reached out to VSU AD Peggy Davis. However, VSU requested a personal apology to its student-athletes.

GC has apparently completed its investigation and says that the heckling originated with a group of 14 students. Three students are facing student conduct disciplinary action for hacking and one student has been held out of an athletic contest for a violation for the athletic code.

“The investigation did not discover any evidence that racist remarks were directed by Guilford fans toward VSU players,” the college said. “However, the fact that VSU supporters found the environment to be extremely unwelcoming for their players is of deep concern to the College and resulted in action that has been taken.”

This determination was made after interviewing more than 30 Guilford athletics staff members, non-athletics staff members, students and parents who were at the soccer match, according to the school’s release.

HBCU Gameday reached out to Virginia State University officials for a reaction to the Guilford College investigation, but officials declined comment.

Virginia State University has requested an apology and an investigation after the VSU women’s soccer team experienced racial slurs and inappropriate sounds during a match against Guilford College on September 26. During the game, the opposing team’s fans reportedly yelled the N-word and made monkey noises aimed at our student-athletes. While there have been direct apologies to our administration, VSU says that our student-athletes also deserve a personal apology.

Virginia State University Guilford College racism

The President of Guilford College, Dr. Kyle Farmbry, has apologized to VSU President Dr. Makola M. Abdullah. In a website statement, Dr. Farmbry said they have discussed this matter at length and will complete an investigation and take appropriate action relative to their code of conduct.

The Statement reads as follows:

Guilford students, faculty, and staff,

I am writing in response to a very concerning situation at our women’s soccer game with Virginia State University on campus last night. Spectators associated with Guilford College directed very disrespectful comments toward the visiting players, tarnishing the experience of those who attended, especially our guests.

According to the information that I have already gathered, loud outbursts from a group of spectators included profanity and derogatory remarks toward the Virginia State team. It was in very poor taste and was very poor sportsmanship by anyone’s definition.

Virginia State parents and other fans observed the behavior and have reached out to me about it. They have also shared on social media their disappointment with Guilford, given its stated commitments to diversity, equity and sportsmanship.

This morning I spoke by phone with Virginia State President Makola M. Abdullah to express apologies for the behavior of our fans and to let him know that we are conducting an investigation into the situation, which we take very seriously.

Cabinet discussed this matter at length today. I have asked Athletic Director Bill Foti and Dean of Students Steve Mencarini to complete the investigation and provide me with the facts. If you attended the game and have information that would help Bill and Steve, please contact them. Following the investigation we will take appropriate action relative to our code of conduct.

Intercollegiate athletics play an important role at a college. Besides offering leadership and team-building opportunities for students, sports can be a positive rallying point for the campus overall. That is our goal at Guilford.

Meanwhile, as President, I want to make it clear that behavior of the type displayed by our spectators last night is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. We expect and will enforce standards of sportsmanship in the stands and on the field or court.

Please join me in enthusiastically supporting our own teams and being respectful of those against whom we compete.

Sincerely,

Kyle Farmbry
President

Peggy Davis, VSU Associate Vice President for Athletics, says she has also received a call of apology from the Guilford Athletic Director. However, VSU has made it clear to Guilford College officials that the university will not tolerate this behavior from their fans and would still like them and their fans to apologize directly to our student-athletes. “Our consistent goal has always been to provide a quality athletic experience for our student-athletes on and off campus, which does not include inappropriate, unacceptable, or racially insensitive comments by spectators, coaches, officials, or students.”

“Racist and abusive language has no place in college sports,” Says Dr. Abdullah. “Our student-athletes work very hard to represent our university, and we must work together to ensure everyone can enjoy a safe and inclusive environment.”

But it isn't satisfied as competition heats up.

The Virginia State University “Trojan Explosion” marching band is off to a hot start according to the inaugural ESPN Band of The Year rankings.

VSU is ranked third in the Division II/NAIA rankings, released late last month on HBCU Gameday. It is the highest-ranked band in the CIAA and the highest amongst Division II HBCUs with only NAIA bands Florida Memorial and Langston University ranked above it.

The Trojan Explosion is led by Dr. Taylor L. Whitehead, a Virginia State University alumnus who served as assistant band director for a decade. He was named Director of Marching and Pep Bands on an interim basis in 2022 and full-time earlier in this year.

“It’s always been in my heart, but just glad to be back in this capacity and leading the Trojan Explosion,” Dr. Whitehead told HBCU Gameday after his band’s halftime performance against Shaw in Durham.

Virginia State University, Trojan Explosion

The Shaw game came less than 24 hours after the rankings were released. The list will be reduced to the top 10 bands in late October and top five in late November before the top two bands in Division I and D2/NAIA will be invited to the championship on Dec. 15.

“Well, it’s early in the season. We had a pretty good start, but from here it’s onward and upward. We’re not shooting for the number three spot. We want to go on up to the number one spot,” Dr. Whitehead said. “We want to ensure that our band – what we consider to be the best band in the CIAA, and one of the best bands in D2 – is in Atlanta for the national championship.”

The national championship will take place in Atlanta at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The competition is something that excites Dr. Whitehead.

“It’s a really exciting time. I started as a high school band for 20 years and competed in these type of competitions all the time,” he said. So with college bands, it has always been about bragging rights and everybody always said they were the best. But to now have the opportunity to finally crown a group the best. It’s just an exciting time and we’re working hard. We really want to turn it up a notch as we go into the second half and the back end of the season.

HBCU bands travel to varying levels, with some hitting the road extensively while others stick close to home. The Virginia State University marching band has hit the road extensively, traveling up I-95 to Washington D.C., down I-85 to Raleigh and Charlotte and even flying out to Houston for the National Battle of The Bands. Dr. Whitehead says he feels it’s important to get the type of exposure his students deserve.

“We think it’s very important for our students that are working every week coming to practice to get out there and showcase their talents,” he said.

Bands are judged once a month based on a performance they are allowed to submit themselves.

“We submitted our halftime show from Charlotte,” Dr. Whitehead said. “The energy was it was on an all-time high. The crowd was engaged. I thought the music sounded pretty good, so we submitted that. But I know that we’re going to go up from there.”

Virginia State University, Trojan Explosion

Virginia State University ranked second in auxiliary, fourth in drum majors, eighth in musicality and fourth in percussion. It did not rank in percussion, however, which is something that Dr. Whitehead recognized as something to work on. His students were well aware of the rankings as well, and he says they took pride in them while knowing the Trojan Explosion will need to continue to stay on its toes as things heat up in October.

“I mean, they can see the work every day,” he said. “We coming in, they can see the progress, they can see the growth. And that’s what it’s about. And making sure that it’s just continued progress. That we grow as an educational institution, But musically – in this program – as well.”

But half of the league's teams have a path to the title game and others could play spoilers.

October is here and as CIAA football enters divisional play, the league has a level of parity that hasn’t been seen in well over a decade.

Here are some of the numbers that support that claim, and a look at the field the rest of the way.

– Virginia State is the lone CIAA program unbeaten at 5-0 after punishing Shaw University 38-19. VSU is 3-0 after interdivision play, and looks to be the strongest team in the league, but it needs to look no further than VUU’s 2022 CIAA North fumble to know that ONE game can change the whole race.

– Half of the league’s 12 football programs – three each in the CIAA North and CIAA South – have a legitimate shot to find themselves in the league’s championship game in Salem, VA in six weeks.

VSU is the club leader in the CIAA North with Virginia Union and Bowie State at 2-1 after losses to Fayetteville State and Livingstone in the last two weeks. Both teams will look to take down VSU (Bowie State hosts VSU for homecoming next week) and hope the chips fall their way.

WSSU, Asa Barnes, CIAA football

-The CIAA South has two teams that enter division play with perfect 3-0 conference records – Johnson C. Smith and Fayetteville State. Winston-Salem State fell to 2-1 in CIAA play with a loss to an improved Lincoln program on the road.

-The two divisions split dead even at 10 wins and 10 losses each after three weeks of conference play. Considering the dominance of the northern division in CIAA football over the last half-decade, that’s a pretty significant achievement.

Beyond the contenders, there appears to be a level of teams that are all-but-mathematically eliminated from championship game contention but could pose as stumbling blocks for those who still have a path.

Lincoln University suffered heart-breaking losses to CIAA South contenders Fayetteville State and Johnson C. Smith in the first two weeks of conference play, but held on for a gritty comeback win over Winston-Salem State at home on Saturday. It is 1-2 in conference play but will look to take momentum from its first home win since 2018 as it goes on a homecoming tour, starting with CIAA newcomer Bluefield State.

Shaw University, Gibbs, CIAA football

Livingstone College looked to have taken a step back in the first two weeks of the season after winning four games in 2023. But it showed tenacity in a close home loss against Virginia Union and then knocked off Bowie State for its biggest program win in recent memory. It will look to head down the road to Winston-Salem State and beat the Rams for the second year in a row after ending a series losing streak that stretched for a quarter century before last season’s win in Salisbury.

Elizabeth City State, Shaw and Bluefield State have all beaten teams in the league despite ECSU and BSU being 0-3. ECSU took Johnson C. Smith to the limit on Saturday before suffering a tough loss. Bluefield State scored at will against Livingstone but hasn’t been able to claim a win since. Shaw beat ECSU for a crossover win, but couldn’t take down CIAA North contenders Virginia State, Bowie State or VUU in a non-conference matchup.

And then there is St. Augustine’s University. SAU is winless, and averages just 6.6 points per game while giving up 34 points per game.

As we’ve seen in the past, a lot can happen in the second half of CIAA football. We’ve seen nationally-ranked contenders stumble (VUU in 2022) and new powers emerge (Fayetteville State 2017) in the final weeks of play. Buckle up your seatbelts.

DURHAM, N.C- The Virginia State University football team took an undefeated record into a matchup with Shaw and emerged victorious 38-19 on Saturday afternoon.

The Trojans made a statement on their opening drive marching down the field on an 8-play 72-yard drive that ended with a Kymani Clarke one yard touchdown run. VSU never faced a third down on the drive moving the ball effectively both in the air and on the ground.

On their second drive they found themselves in a 4 and 8 situation, where it was too long for a field goal and too short for a punt. So, with Jordan Davis in the shotgun, he rifled a pass to an open Lucas Nunez in the endzone for a 28-yard touchdown.

Shaw would answer with a drive that went through the end of the first quarter and five minutes into the second with an eight-yard touchdown rush but would miss the point after attempt. VSU did not take long to answer as they would get the ball on a touchback and drive down the field to make it 21-6. During the drive Clarke would rush for 24 yards and the seven-yard touchdown run.

The last score of the first half saw the defense force the Bears deep into their own territory thanks to back-to-back sacks by Mustupha Coly and a combo sack of Zemar Anderson and Miqueal Pillow-Smiley. Then the punt return unit blocked the punt and recovered in the endzone to add another touchdown on the board.

On the third drive of the second half Davis once again found Nunez for a long 75-yard touchdown on the third play of the drive. Shaw would then answer with a touchdown after a 12-yard touchdown pass and on VSU’s next drive they would end their scoring with a field goal.

Davis finished with 320 yards passing to go with two touchdowns and two interceptions for VSU.

Virginia State University moves to 5-0 with the win and Shaw drops to 1-4. The Trojans stay on the road as they play Bowie State on Saturday October 7 with kickoff scheduled for 2:00 pm.
