Virginia Union University, from the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association, will face Miles College, from the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, in the 2025 Black College Football Hall of Fame Classic in Canton on Aug. 31. For the first time in the six-year history of the Labor Day weekend game, the newly dubbed “Clash at The Classic” will feature the defending HBCU football champions from the CIAA and SIAC — two athletic conferences primarily composed of Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

“Clash at The Classic”

Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium on the campus of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. NFL Network, which will provide coverage of the game, announced the teams and new conference arrangement today during its broadcast of the 2025 Allstate HBCU Legacy Bowl in New Orleans, La.

“We are grateful to the commissioners and teams of the CIAA and SIAC for their commitment to playing in the Black College Football Hall of Fame Classic game,” said Jim Porter, president & CEO of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. “The format of bringing in the defending conference champions sets up the ‘Clash at The Classic’ as an entertaining, well-matched game annually, with top-tier players representing their historic universities.”

HBCU Black College Football Hall of Fame Classic

Virginia Union head coach Alvin Parker and the Panthers are making their second appearance in Canton; they defeated Morehouse College 45-13 in the 2023 Black College Football Hall of Fame Classic. In 2024, the Panthers posted a 10-4 record that included two wins in the Division II NCAA tournament before falling to the eventual national runner-up Valdosta State Blazers in the quarterfinal round.

The 2025 “Clash at The Classic” will serve as Miles head coach Chris Goode’s first game at the helm of the Golden Bears. The program finished a historic 2024 season with a 10-3 record that included school records for most victories, most consecutive wins in a single year (10), and its first NCAA Division II playoff victory. The Golden Bears’ season also ended at the hands of Valdosta State, one week before the Blazers ousted Virginia Union.

Fans can purchase their seats now to see the game and energizing band performances featuring the Virginia Union Ambassadors of Sound Marching Band and the Miles College Purple Marching Machine. Tickets, starting at $40, are available here.

Jada Byers has been named the recipient of the prestigious Deacon Jones Award, recognizing him as the top player in HBCU football for the 2024 season. The Virginia Union star put together a historic campaign, solidifying his place as one of the greatest running backs in HBCU history.

Byers finished his career as Virginia Union’s all-time leading rusher, while also ranking second all-time in CIAA and HBCU history, trailing only Winston-Salem State legend Richard Huntley. His 2024 season was nothing short of dominant, as he rushed for 2,061 yards and 27 touchdowns, leading Virginia Union to another strong campaign. His performance was highlighted by a record-setting game against Bowie State on October 26, where he exploded for 324 rushing yards and six touchdowns, including a 75-yard scoring run.

The Deacon Jones Award is given annually to the top HBCU football player, and Byers’ resume left no doubt he was deserving. In addition to his gaudy rushing totals, he contributed in the passing game with 154 receiving yards and was a factor in special teams with 180 punt return yards. His versatility and game-breaking ability made him a nightmare for opposing defenses throughout the season.

Byers is set to compete in the HBCU Legacy Bowl as he looks to break into the pros.

Jada Byers’ impact on the field and in the record books ensures his name will be mentioned among the all-time greats. With the Deacon Jones Award now in his trophy case, his legacy as one of the most dominant players in HBCU football history is firmly established.

One of the top offensive coordinators in HBCU football, Virginia Union’s Luke Bengtson, is headed for the FCS level.

Bengston is set to join the South Dakota football staff as a wide receivers coach, according to Football Scoop.

Bengston spent three years at the CIAA HBCU, helping the team make the Division II playoffs in each season — including back-to-back CIAA championships.

Luke Bengston, HBCU football, Virginia Union

In his first season at Virginia Union in 2022, he served as quarterbacks coach. The offense averaged 44 points per game in the regular season which was first in the CIAA and third nationally. The quarterbacks led the CIAA in touchdown passes, quarterback rating (#17 Nationally), and third-down conversion rating (#16 Nationally. They ranked second in the CIAA in completion percentage and senior quarterback Jahkari Grant accepted an invite to play in the HBCU Legacy Bowl in New Orleans as well as was named MVP of the Virginia State game. Luke was selected to coach in the prestigious HBCU Legacy Bowl where he was the ofensive coordinator and coached the quarterbacks.

The offense put up 40 points per game the following season as he took over the offense, leading the CIAA and ranking ninth in the nation. It had the top redone offense, rushing offense and ran for the most rushing touchdowns in the country.

The HBCU squad picked up where it left off in 2024, averaging just over 40 points per game once again, while averaging 458.4 yards per game as it won back-to-back titles and won the first two playoff games in school history.

Now Bengston will be taking his talents to the FCS.

William Davis, a standout safety from Virginia Union, has transferred to West Virginia University, making the leap from HBCU football to the FBS Power 4. The South Boston, Virginia native brings a proven track record of production and versatility to the Mountaineers’ secondary.

Davis, a 5-foot-10, 195-pound junior, excelled during his time at Virginia Union, an HBCU competing in Division II football. Over his two seasons as a starter for the Panthers, Davis amassed 115 tackles, 25 for loss, nine interceptions, four sacks, and two forced fumbles. In 2024, he earned all-conference honors with 56 tackles, 11.5 tackles for loss, two interceptions, and a sack, further solidifying his reputation as one of the top defenders in the CIAA.

On December 21, 2024, Davis entered the NCAA transfer portal and quickly drew interest from FBS programs. He took an official visit to West Virginia on January 10, 2025, and committed to the Mountaineers shortly afterward. Davis is part of a transfer class aimed at bolstering depth in the secondary. He joins three other safeties as part of the 2025 recruiting cycle, giving the Mountaineers 14 scholarship players at the position. However, only two have significant game experience, leaving room for Davis to make an immediate impact.

Davis’s ability to play multiple roles in the secondary adds valuable flexibility to the West Virginia University defense. Known for his tackling and disruption behind the line of scrimmage, he is expected to compete for playing time in his final collegiate season at a Power 4 school, the biggest stage in college football.

The transfer marks a significant step for Davis, transitioning from HBCU football at Virginia Union to the national stage of the FBS. His journey highlights the talent pipeline between HBCUs and larger programs, showcasing the impact of players like Davis on both levels of college football.

Two former HBCU wide receivers are taking their talents to the ACC via Wake Forest.

Reginald Vick Jr. and Sterling Berkhalter both committed to Wake Forest on Friday.

Berkhalter started his career at North Carolina A&T, playing for the HBCU during the 2021 and 2022 seasons. He caught 35 passes for 486 yards and two scores in two seasons there before hitting the transfer portal.

The 6’4, 185 pound Cincinnati, OH native eventually landed on his hometown squad. He saw little playing time his first season at the FBS level, appearing in two games with no catches before redshirting. He saw his playing time increase the past season, catching 11 passes for 191 yards and one touchdown.

Sterling Berkhalter, Wake Forest, HBCU

He hit the portal following the season once again, and has committed to the ACC team program.

Reginald “RJ” Vick Jr. is a 6’3, 185 yard receiver from Wendell, NC. He spent the last three years at Virginia Union University, a Division II HBCU in the CIAA. He didn’t play in 2022, and caught just nine passes as a redshirt freshman in 2023 before exploding in 2024.

Vick caught 48 passes for 1,164 yards — an average of 24.25 yards per catch — for 12 touchdowns. He helped VUU win back-to-back CIAA titles and advance to the NCAA Division II national quarterfinals.

Now both of these players who started their careers as gems for HBCUs — one in Division II and one in the FCS — will head to Winston-Salem to try to help Wake Forest climb out of the ACC basement.

Virginia Union University’s Jada Byers is no ordinary athlete. With his sights set on the NFL, Byers reflects on the remarkable journey that took him from his hometown to breaking records at an HBCU, all while staying humble and focused on the future.

“I took three days of rest after the season,” Byers said, already preparing to take the next step toward the NFL. His drive to succeed is evident, fueled by an impressive HBCU football career where he set the Panthers’ all-time record for rushing yards (5,311) and touchdowns (70). This season alone, he shattered the single-game record with an eye-popping 324 rushing yards and six touchdowns against Bowie State.

Despite these accomplishments, Byers remains grounded. “To leave a legacy like that feels great, but it’s really not about me,” he said. “It’s about the kids looking up to me and believing they can be great at any level.”

Faith has been a cornerstone of Byers’ life and career. “Every day, I wake up and thank God,” he shared. “Everything I’ve been through—good and bad—is part of His plan. Even this interview is part of my journey.”

HBCU NFL Virginia Union

His journey hasn’t been without challenges. Byers opened up about his daughter’s illness during his time in HBCU football, an experience that strengthened his resolve. “If she can push through, so can I. If I gave up, it felt like I’d be letting her down,” he said. “That connection we have motivates me every day.”

Much of Byers’ success can be attributed to the mentorship and support he received at Virginia Union. He spoke highly of the guidance he received from his coaches, including head coach Alvin Parker and running backs coach Diego Ryland. “Coach Parker gave me the opportunity to shine, and I ran with it,” he said. “Coach Ryland taught me how to be a man. I could call him anytime—3 a.m., midnight—and he’d be there to talk.”

When asked about his mindset heading into NFL preparation, Byers kept it simple. “Just be you,” he said. “Don’t try to change yourself for anyone. If they give me a chance, I’ll give them everything I’ve got.”

Byers also highlighted the role his community played in shaping him. “I want to give my community something because they gave me so much,” he said. “When I come back home, it’s special. The kids look up to me, and I want to make sure I’m giving them hope.”

As he prepares for the next chapter, Byers draws inspiration from his family, particularly his daughter. “My daughter motivates me every day,” he said. “I want her to see that her dad worked hard and never gave up.”

Jada Byers is more than just a record-breaking running back. He’s a testament to perseverance, humility, and faith. With his NFL dreams within reach, Byers’ story is one of resilience and inspiration—a legacy that will continue to motivate those who follow in his footsteps. “Just be you,” he repeated. “Trust the process and never stop working.”

Virginia Union University, a Division II HBCU that just made an impressive run in the playoffs, is being stared down with change.

Multiple sources indicate that head coach Dr. Alvin Parker is drawing serious interest from multiple job openings at FCS HBCUs. Meanwhile, several key players have entered the transfer portal since the program bowed out of the playoffs in the third round against national runner-up Valdosta State.

Parker, a Virginia Union alumnus, has compiled a 50-17 record in six seasons as a head coach. He has never finished with a record below 6-4, and his team has made the Division II playoffs in each of the last three seasons. VUU has gone 20-6 in the past two seasons, winning the CIAA in both seasons. The 2024 season saw VUU come up with playoff wins on the road against Wingate and Lenoir-Rhyne.

William Davis
Virginia Union defensive back William Davis has hit the transfer portal.

There are now three HBCU openings at the FCS level — Alabama A&M and Mississippi Valley of the SWAC and Delaware State University of the MEAC. Sources indicate Alabama A&M and Delaware State have interest in Parker.

If Parker does return to Virginia Union next season, it will likely be without the core of the program. Running back Jada Byers, VUU’s all-time leading rusher, has exhausted his eligibility and is headed to the NFL Draft. Meanwhile, several of his talented teammates like wide receiver Reginald Vick Jr. and defensive back William Davis have hit the transfer portal in recent days and are drawing interest at some of the highest levels of football.

There is no question Virginia Union will feature new names next season. The question is who will be the head coach at the Richmond HBCU next fall.

In what could be the biggest win of the HBCU basketball season, the Virginia Union University men’s basketball team defeated Fairmont State University, ranked seventh in the nation, 76-60 on Wednesday, December 18, at Barco-Stevens Hall in Richmond, Va.

VUU‘s DJ Mitchell led the way by scoring 28 points while teammate Malachi Dark added 15 points in the win.

Virginia Union’s Che Evans scored 10 points and Jonathan King led the Panthers on the boards with nine rebounds.

“This was a huge win for our team and the program,” said VUU Head Men’s Basketball Coach Jay Butler.  “Anytime you can beat the #7 team in the country on our home court right before the Christmas break was a very good win.  I was very proud of DJ Mitchell today. He did a great job scoring the ball on all three levels.  I was happy to get Malachi Dark back from being out the last couple games. He gives us a much needed low post presence.”

Virginia Union (6-7) scored the game’s opening basket but Fairmont State (9-1) responded with a 14-1 run. The Panthers answered with 14 straight points to take the lead by three (17-14) with 9:02 left in the first half.

Fairmont State struggled to get a rhythm on offense while Virginia Union expanded upon its lead with the next eight points to lead 32-23 with 1:33 remaining. The HBCU added four more points to their total and led by 13 (36-23) going to halftime.

Coming out of the locker room, the Falcons quickly got things going on the offensive end with seven consecutive points. VUU responded with a 12-0 run to lead 48-30 just over five minutes into the second half.

The Falcons tried to cut into the deficit but time was not on their side as the final horn sounded. FSU fell by the final score of 76-60.

Virginia Union will now travel to Staten Island, N.Y., to face the Dolphins of the College of Staten Island at 7:00 p.m. On Thursday, January 2, 2025.

WWE superstar Michin brought the energy and her HBCU roots to WWE’s Saturday Night Main Event. The Virginia Union University (VUU) alum stepped into the spotlight for a historic matchup against Chelsea Green, battling to become the first-ever Women’s United States Champion.

Michin entered in style, rocking a Virginia Union University Varsity jacket. It was more than just a fashion statement—it was a proud shoutout to the HBCU that helped shape her athletic career and identity.

Before Michin made waves in WWE, she was a volleyball standout at Virginia Union University. In a 2018 interview with WWE.com, Michin opened up about how her time at the HBCU prepared her for success.

“I wanted to earn a college volleyball scholarship because my academics wouldn’t be enough to qualify entry to the colleges I wanted,” Michin said. “My dad sent tapes to Virginia Union University, and they gave me a full scholarship for two years.”

Michin played at VUU for two years before transferring to Marymount University. But her time at Virginia Union left a lasting impact. Representing her alma mater on WWE’s global stage was her way of showing that HBCU pride is always with her.

Even though Michin didn’t walk away as champion her presence at Saturday Night Main Event was historic. She proudly repped her HBCU roots in front of a national audience, and her journey is already inspiring the next generation of HBCU athletes.

Howard University track star Darci Khan, a star hurdler with a knack for the spotlight, is already eyeing WWE as her next move. Khan’s speed and athleticism on the track could easily translate to the wrestling ring. She’s part of a growing wave of HBCU athletes looking to make their mark in sports entertainment.

Michin continues to be a force in WWE, proving that talent from HBCUs can shine on the world’s biggest stages. Fans can catch her every Friday night on WWE SmackDown, airing on USA Network at 8 PM EST/7 PM CST.

And if black college athletes like Darci Khan joins the mix, the future of HBCU representation in WWE looks brighter than ever. Stay tuned—Michin may have just paved the way for the next big star.

Virginia Union’s remarkable season ended with a tough 49-14 loss to top-ranked Valdosta State in the NCAA Division II playoffs. The game also marked the final career game for Jada Byers, one of the most electric running backs in recent memory for HBCU football. The game was held at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium and showcased Valdosta State’s high-powered offense and smothering defense, which were too much for the Panthers to overcome.

The game started competitively, with Virginia Union’s defense forcing Valdosta State to grind out their opening scoring drive. However, Valdosta State struck first with an 8-yard touchdown run by Alfonso Franklin, who would be a key figure throughout the game.

Virginia Union responded in the second quarter with an impressive 18-play, 75-yard drive capped by a 7-yard touchdown run from Jada Byers. This narrowed the gap to 14-7, but Valdosta State’s offense erupted with three unanswered touchdowns before halftime, including two long scoring strikes from quarterback Sammy Edwards to Rodney Bullard. The Blazers carried a commanding 28-7 lead into the break.

In the second half, Valdosta State continued to dominate, with a 62-yard touchdown pass to Samuel Curry and another long strike to Bullard putting the game out of reach. Virginia Union added a late touchdown pass from R.J. Rosales to Reginald Vick Jr., but it was too little, too late.

    Notable Performances

    • Jada Byers (Virginia Union): The top HBCU running back this season carried the ball 22 times for 109 yards and a touchdown.
    • R.J. Rosales (Virginia Union): The quarterback threw for 88 yards and a touchdown while avoiding turnovers.
    • Virginia Union Defense: Shamar Graham led the effort with 12 tackles, including a tackle for loss.
    • Sammy Edwards (Valdosta State): The quarterback was exceptional, throwing for 302 yards and four touchdowns, connecting frequently with Rodney Bullard, who hauled in three touchdowns on five receptions for 158 yards.
    • Alfonso Franklin (Valdosta State): Balanced the Blazers’ attack with 64 rushing yards and two scores.

    An HBCU season to remember

Despite the loss, Virginia Union’s 10-3 season reflects a strong campaign which included two NCAA playoff victories. Jada Byers finishes his career as the all-time leading rusher in Virginia Union history, a mark he surpassed earlier this season. Coach Alvin Parker’s squad displayed flashes of brilliance but could not sustain momentum against the nation’s top team. Valdosta State moves forward as a clear championship favorite, showcasing why they hold the No. 1 ranking.

HBCU football continues to make waves on the national stage, as standout players from historically Black colleges and universities earned top honors in the NCAA Division II Super Region Two awards for 2024. Headlining the accolades is Jada Byers, Virginia Union University’s record-breaking running back, who was named Offensive Player of the Year.

Byers’ historic season cemented his legacy as one of the greatest to ever wear a Virginia Union uniform. Already VUU’s all-time leading rusher with 5,965 career yards and 77 touchdowns, Byers elevated his game even further in 2024. He rushed for 1,947 yards, breaking his own school record, and ranked second nationally in both rushing yards and touchdowns (26). His explosive performances propelled Virginia Union to its second CIAA championship appearance in three years and secured his spot as one of eight finalists for the prestigious Harlon Hill Trophy. Byers’ dominance reflects the rich tradition of HBCU excellence in athletics, as he shattered expectations and etched his name in both school and conference history.

The All-Super Region Two First Team also featured several other HBCU stars, highlighting the depth of talent across these programs. From Virginia State, offensive lineman Bruno Onwuazor earned a spot for his role in anchoring one of the conference’s most efficient offenses. Meanwhile, Clark Atlanta University wide receiver Armonte Harris was recognized for his dynamic ability to stretch the field, showcasing why he is one of the top receivers in the SIAC. Joining him was Brevin Caldwell of Johnson C. Smith University.

On the defensive side, Bowie State linebacker Saliq Salawu represented the Bulldogs with distinction. Known for his physicality and leadership, Janack consistently disrupted opposing offenses, earning his place among the region’s best. Johnson C. Smith linebacker Benari Black left his mark as well.

These honors not only celebrate individual achievements but also highlight the growing recognition of HBCU football within Division II. Players like Byers, Black, and Caldwell continue to elevate their programs and inspire future generations. As HBCUs assert their place on the national stage, their athletes prove that they belong among the elite, carrying on a legacy of excellence that resonates far beyond the gridiron.

    • Virginia State’s only victory over a team with a winning record was against Benedict, limiting their impact against top-tier opponents.

Summary: Virginia State showed statistical strength. However, they fell short in securing wins against leading teams within the CIAA. This impacted their overall grade. This happened despite their perfect conference record adjusted by CIAA rules.

Virginia Union University (VUU) made HBCU football history of its own by defeating #17 Wingate 34-31 in overtime, earning their first-ever NCAA playoff win and snapping Wingate’s remarkable 20-game winning streak against HBCU teams that dates back to 2012. The Panthers’ resilience and clutch play secured the historic victory.

Wingate came into the matchup with one of the strongest defenses in Division II football, allowing just 10 points per game and dominating opponents with 27 sacks this season. Their streak of dominance against HBCU teams, including a playoff win over Virginia Union in 2022, added extra intensity to the game. Despite the challenge, Virginia Union rose to the occasion.

Jada Byers led Virginia Union’s offense, rushing for 92 yards on 23 carries. Mark Wright started at quarterback, passing for 202 yards and two touchdowns, including a 44-yard strike to Regi Vick Jr., who finished with 92 yards on four catches. Late in the game, RJ Rosales stepped in and sealed the victory with an 18-yard touchdown run in overtime.

Wingate showcased its offensive firepower with quarterback Brooks Bentley throwing for 266 yards and two touchdowns. Evan McCray was his top target, catching four passes for 113 yards, including a 56-yard touchdown. Running back Corey Siemer added 90 rushing yards and a touchdown, keeping the Bulldogs competitive.

    HBCU Virginia Union

Virginia Union’s defense played a pivotal role in the upset, with Jayden Earley grabbing a critical interception late in the game. The Panthers capitalized on key opportunities, showing poise against Wingate’s elite defense. Brady Myers added consistency with his kicking, converting all four extra points.

The decisive moment came in overtime. After holding Wingate to a field goal, Rosales led Virginia Union to the game-winning touchdown, ending Wingate’s dominance over HBCU programs. This monumental win avenged Virginia Union’s 2022 playoff loss to Wingate and sent shockwaves through Division II football.

The victory marked a turning point for Virginia Union, positioning them as a powerhouse among HBCU programs and breaking through against a team long seen as an obstacle. The Panthers’ combination of grit, defense, and execution delivered a performance to remember.

With this milestone win, Virginia Union not only ended Wingate’s HBCU winning streak but also established themselves as a formidable contender in postseason play. The game underscored the growing strength of HBCU football and showcased Virginia Union’s rise on the national stage.

The NCAA Division II playoffs will feature a compelling first-round matchup between Wingate University (9-1) and HBCU Virginia Union University (8-3). The Bulldogs have a remarkable 20-game winning streak against HBCUs, a streak that began in 2012. Here’s a detailed breakdown of both teams this season.

    Virginia Union Panthers

    Key Stats (2024):

    • Record: 8-3 (6-1 CIAA)
    • Scoring Offense: 45.2 points per game
    • Scoring Defense: 15.6 points allowed per game
    • Rushing Offense: 245.8 yards per game (6.6 yards per carry)

    • Total Offense: 490.7 yards per game
    • Top Performer: RB Jada Byers, 1,497 rushing yards (7.0 YPC), 23 rushing touchdowns

The Panthers are explosive on offense, with Jada Byers anchoring a dominant ground game. Their defense is opportunistic, with 11 interceptions and 20 sacks. Virginia Union also boasts a high-octane passing attack led by QB Mark Wright, who has thrown for 1,965 yards and 18 touchdowns.

    Virginia Union, HBCU, Wingate
Virginia Union is in the playoffs for the third consecutive season.

    Wingate Bulldogs

    Key Stats (2024):

    • Record: 9-1 (6-1 SAC)
    • Scoring Offense: 29.1 points per game
    • Scoring Defense: 10 points allowed per game
    • Rushing Offense: 170.1 yards per game (4.4 yards per carry)
    • Passing Offense: 182.2 yards per game (55.4% completion, 14 TDs, 7 INTs)

Wingate’s defense is elite, allowing only 202.8 yards per game. The Bulldogs’ front seven has been dominant, with 34 sacks on the season, led by Marquise Fleming (8 sacks) and Kai Russell (6.5 sacks). Offensively, Wingate relies on a balanced attack, with QB Brooks Bentley managing the passing game efficiently.

    Matchup Keys

    1. Battle in the Trenches: Virginia Union’s offensive line will be tested by Wingate’s ferocious defensive front. The Panthers need to protect Mark Wright to exploit Wingate’s secondary.
    2. Stopping Jada Byers: Wingate’s ability to contain Byers will be pivotal. The Bulldogs excel at limiting rushing attacks, allowing only 79.2 yards per game.
    3. Turnover Margin: Both teams are adept at creating turnovers. Wingate has 11 interceptions and 14 forced fumbles, while Virginia Union has also been effective in forcing mistakes.

    Historical Context

Wingate’s streak against HBCU opponents adds intrigue to this clash. They’ve consistently handled similar challenges, including the previous playoff win over Virginia Union. The Panthers, however, enter with a point to prove after falling short in 2022.

    Prediction

This matchup pits Wingate’s smothering defense against Virginia Union’s explosive offense. If Wingate can control the pace and win the turnover battle, their streak is likely to continue. However, a breakout game from Jada Byers could tilt the scales in Virginia Union’s favor. Expect a closely fought game with high stakes for the HBCU squad.

Post-game altercations AKA brawls were a theme this weekend in HBCU football — and the CIAA Championship Game was no exception.

The conference title game of the CIAA between Virginia Union and Virginia State — two schools separated by less than 30 minutes — was chippy one. And that continued after the whistle sounded on Virginia Union’s 17-13 win. Several players engaged in postgame fisticuffs, prompting a statement from the league’s commissioner.

“I am disappointed and heartbroken regarding the behaviors of two of our best teams at the conclusion of our 107th football championship,” said CIAA Commissioner Jacqie McWilliams Parker.   “The conference will investigate and manage per its bylaws and processes for unsportsmanlike behavior and misconduct.

“It is disappointing that our story and narrative for this championship did not end with the story that should be told as part of the CIAA legacy, leadership and community.”

The CIAA title game was one of several pivotal HBCU football contests marred by brawls after the fact.

Things kicked off with North Carolina Central and Howard on Friday night, with both players and coaches involved in the action, which was broadcast live on ESPNU. MEAC Commissioner Sonja Stills issued a statement on Saturday, promising an investigation of the incident.

And moments after Jackson State clinched the SWAC East title with a win over Alabama State, the two sides broke out into a brawl in the middle of the field. Alabama State AD Dr. Jason Caple released a statement as well.

While the Mike Tyson and Jake Paul was promoted as the big fight this weekend, apparently HBCU football games signed up to be on the undercard.

The victory, powered by the relentless ground game led by Jada Byers and a staunch defensive stand, solidified the Panthers’ dominance in the conference as they now await word on their potential berth in the NCAA Division II playoffs.

The Panthers struck early, with Byers capping an eight-play, 94-yard drive with a two-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. Virginia State answered with a field goal in the second, but Brady Myers’ 22-yard kick just before halftime gave Virginia Union a 10-3 lead.

In the third quarter, Virginia State’s Romelo Williams connected with Tylique Ray for a seven-yard touchdown to tie the game between the two Virginia HBCUs at 10-10. The momentum seemed to shift, but Virginia Union responded early in the fourth. Quarterback Mark Wright found Reginald Vick Jr. on a 23-yard strike, giving the Panthers a 17-10 edge.

In Super Region II of the NCAA Division II Regional Rankings, four HBCU football programs are in the mix for playoff contention as we head into the final week before the field is announced. With only the top seven teams earning a playoff spot, each HBCU’s Week 11 outcome will be pivotal in determining their postseason fate. Here’s where things stand:

    1. Miles College (6th, 8-1 overall, 8-1 in-region) – Miles holds a critical advantage as it will compete in the SIAC Football Championship game against Clark Atlanta this week. A win here would solidify its position in the top seven, while a loss could endanger its playoff spot. Currently, it is in control of its own destiny.

    2. Johnson C. Smith University (7th, 8-2 overall, 8-2 in-region) – JCSU is clinging to the seventh and final NCAA playoff spot, but it will be idle this week after dropping a game to Livingstone. This leaves its fate partially in the hands of other teams’ performances. Johnson C. Smith needs key teams, like Virginia Union and West Florida, to falter if they hope to hold their position in the final playoff bracket.

    3. Virginia Union University (9th, 7-2 overall, 6-1 in-region) – Virginia Union has a crucial opportunity to improve its standing as it faces Virginia State in the CIAA Championship game. A win could boost it into playoff position, depending on how other results fall. It’ll be aiming to move past Johnson C. 4. Winston-Salem State University (10th, 7-2 overall, 6-2 in-region) – Winston-Salem State dropped in the rankings despite a thrilling 37-31 overtime victory over Fayetteville State. Like Johnson C. Smith, WSSU will be idle this week, limiting its ability to make a final impression. It will be watching the outcomes of the SIAC and CIAA championships closely, hoping for results that might create an opening for it.

With two of these four HBCU football programs (Johnson C. Smith and Winston-Salem State) idle, their NCAA playoff hopes will rest largely on the performances of Miles and Virginia Union. This week’s results will be decisive in determining which HBCUs make it into the playoff field. For more insights on team scenarios and standings, check HBCUGameday.com for the latest updates.

In a high-stakes matchup at Rogers Stadium, Virginia State pulled off a 35-28 victory over Virginia Union, igniting excitement for an upcoming HBCU rivalry rematch in the CIAA Championship.

Virginia State’s win was as thrilling as it was essential; their championship hopes depended on Johnson C. Smith’s unexpected 15-10 loss to Livingstone College in the longest HBCU football rivalry, which allowed them to advance to the CIAA title game. Meanwhile, Virginia Union had already punched its ticket with a resounding 91-0 win over Bluefield State the week prior, setting the stage for a potential showdown.

    Virginia State, CIAA

Virginia State struck first when Romelo Williams connected with Tayshaun Porter for a 38-yard touchdown, setting the tone for an aggressive offensive showing. Despite Virginia Union responding with a field goal and a 15-yard touchdown pass from Mark Wright to Reginald Vick Jr., Virginia State continued to surge. Williams showcased his versatility, rushing for a 1-yard touchdown just before halftime, bringing the score to 21-13. In the third quarter, Virginia Union’s Jada Byers made a statement with a powerful 2-yard touchdown run, leveling the score at 21-21 and adding intensity to the rivalry clash.

But Virginia State’s offense didn’t falter. Williams’ deep pass to Malik Hunter for a 91-yard touchdown electrified the crowd and put the Trojans back in control. Shortly afterward, a 23-yard rushing touchdown by Jimmyll Williams extended their lead to 35-21, and Virginia State’s defense held strong against Virginia Union’s final attempts. Though Virginia Union narrowed the gap with a fourth-quarter touchdown, they couldn’t overcome a late interception that sealed Virginia State’s hard-fought victory.

The win marked a thrilling chapter in their rivalry, with both teams now readying for a climactic rematch in the CIAA Championship on November 17 in Salem, Virginia, where pride, history, and the championship title will be on the line for the two Virginia HBCU programs.

Charlotte, NC – With week 9 of football in the rearview and a pivotal week 10 on the horizon, one team in the conference has solidified a spot in the 2024 CIAA Football Championship (Nov. 16th – Salem, VA) with others in tight contention. As it stands, Virginia Union University, Johnson C Smith University & Virginia State University sit in first, second and third place respectively. Regardless of how Week 10 plays out, VUU has already earned a spot in the CIAA Championship, however, final seedings and regular season champions are yet to be finalized.

Lets take a look below at the possible week 10 scenarios:

CIAA Virginia Union Johnson C Smith Virginia State

    1. If VUU wins & JCSU wins: Both teams would advance to the Championship. At 7-0, Virginia Union would win the regular season and be the #1 seed in the Championship. At 6-1, Johnson C Smith would earn the #2 seed. Note, with the adjusted 7-game conference schedule, the VUU vs. JCSU game that took place on September 21st was denoted a conference game for JCSU only and not VUU.
    Championship Game: #1 VUU (7-0) vs. #2 JCSU (6-1)

    2. If VUU wins, JCSU loses & WSSU wins: At 7-0, VUU would win the regular season and be the #1 seed in the Championship. JCSU, VSU & WSSU would be tied at 5-2, however, JCSU would advance as determined by head-to-head against both VSU & WSSU.
    Championship Game: #1 VUU (7-0) vs. #2 JCSU (5-2)

    3. If VUU loses & JCSU loses: VSU & VUU will both advance to the Championship. With both teams at 6-1, they would be co-champions of the regular season and Virginia State would be the #1 seed in the Championship as determined by head-to-head.
    Championship Game: #1 VSU (6-1) vs. #2 VUU (6-1)

    4. If VUU loses & JCSU wins: VSU, VUU & JCSU would be co-champions of the regular season, however, this creates a 3-way tie for Championship consideration. To determine who moves on to the Championship, the first tiebreaker is winning percentage within the 7-game conference schedule, with each team at 6-1, all would be tied. The next tiebreaker is head-to-head competition, also, within the 7-game conference schedule. In this case, because VSU, VUU & JCSU did not all compete head-to-head within the 7-game conference schedule, head-to-head competition cannot be considered. The next tie breaker is point differential against common opponents. VSU, VUU & JCSU only had one common opponent, Bluefield State. At +91, VUU would move on to the Championship. VSU & JCSU remain tied +39. With only VSU & JCSU in contention for the final Championship spot, the tie breaker procedures reset between the two teams. The first tiebreaker, conference winning percentage, would remain tied. However, the second tiebreaker, head-to-head favors JCSU. JCSU would move on to the Championship as the #2 seed.
    Championship Game: #1 VUU (6-1) vs. #2 JCSU (6-1)

Virginia Union University (VUU) turned heads and in the HBCU football world and beyond this past Saturday, with a staggering 91-0 victory over Bluefield State.

The point output tied a 108-year-old scoring record, set back in 1916. Head coach Dr. Alvin Parker addressed the monumental score, emphasizing that it wasn’t a case of running up the points, despite going for a two-point conversion up 89-0 early in the fourth quarter.

“It definitely wasn’t an effort to try to run up any score or anything like that,” Parker stated in the school’s post-game interview. Instead, the team used the opportunity to reward players across the roster, giving them a chance to shine on the field. “Everybody earned the right to play, and everybody earned the reps that they deserved and they earned today,” he explained.

Parker’s approach reflected a focus on development and recognition. “When guys got in, they produced,” he remarked. This sentiment was evident as quarterback Mark Wright threw for a career-high 347 yards, completing passes of 90 and 88 yards, while RJ Rosales added another 121 passing yards. The team combined for 468 yards in the air, showcasing the depth of VUU’s offense.

Defensively, the Panthers were unstoppable, recording four interceptions, including a 98-yard touchdown return by William Davis. The team’s defensive effort contributed to the impressive shutout.

“Our defense doesn’t get as much recognition as they necessarily deserve, but I was happy to see them perform the way they did today.”

As the game progressed, the team rallied around the idea of pursuing the record, which was set against Saint Paul’s College during World War I.

“Those guys, they wanted the record…the whole team was going off on it.” In the end, his players’ determination led to a historical tie, making a lasting mark in HBCU football.

Next up, Virginia Union University faces off against rival Virginia State, a game that holds implications for the conference championship—a fitting stage for this history-making team.

The recent release of the NCAA Division II Super Region Two rankings has provided an exciting moment for HBCU football, with three CIAA programs represented as well as one from the SIAC. These initial rankings, listed in alphabetical order, highlight Johnson C. Smith, Virginia Union, and Winston-Salem State among the top teams in the region, showcasing the strength and competitiveness of HBCU football this season.

Johnson C. Smith holds a perfect 8-0 record, reflecting its dominance in the CIAA and positioning it well for a playoff berth. Virginia Union, with a 6-1 record, continues to build on its recent success and has emerged as a top contender in the region. Winston-Salem State, at 6-2, rounds out the list of HBCUs, proving that they’re a team to watch in the playoff race. This inclusion of three HBCU programs signifies the strong presence and growing respect for CIAA football within Division II.

A fourth HBCU, Miles College, is the lone SIAC team on the initial list. It is 6-1 on the season.

The Division II playoff selection process involves regional rankings to ensure representation from different parts of the country. The top teams from each of the four super regions are selected to compete, with a committee assessing factors such as win-loss record, strength of schedule, and head-to-head competition. The final ranking, not alphabetical, will determine which teams secure a spot in the playoff bracket, making each remaining game crucial for these HBCUs.

For these HBCU programs, advancing to the NCAA playoffs is a prestigious opportunity to compete on a national level and elevate the profile of HBCU football. As the season progresses, all three CIAA teams will look to solidify their standing in the rankings, aiming to secure their places in the playoffs and proudly represent HBCU football on the national stage.

HBCU fans are watching closely as the 2024 CIAA football season enters its final stretch. The race for the championship is down to the wire as Johnson C. Smith, Virginia Union and Virginia State position themselves for a spot in the CIAA Championship Game. With only two weeks left, the stakes are higher than ever, and every game counts.

    The Top Contenders

Johnson C. Smith has put together a flawless season so far, boasting an 8-0 record overall and 5-0 in the CIAA. They’ve claimed wins over the conference’s top teams, including Virginia Union, Virginia State, and Winston-Salem State. However, their victory over Virginia Union was not counted as a conference game, which leaves Virginia Union technically undefeated in the CIAA as well.

Virginia Union, currently 5-0 in conference play and 6-2 overall, is hot on Johnson C. Smith’s heels. They’ve also displayed strength, particularly with a key win over Winston-Salem State. Their final regular-season matchup is against Virginia State, a game with massive implications for both teams.

Virginia State stands at 4-1 in the CIAA, with a 5-3 overall record. It faced Winston-Salem State but took a loss in a game that didn’t impact its conference standings. This gives Virginia State an extra boost in their run for the title. Their season-ender against Virginia Union will be one of the most anticipated games of the season, as both teams are fighting for a top-two finish.

Winston-Salem State is not technically out of contention with a 4-2 conference record and a 6-3 overall record. While it has had a strong season, a recent loss has put them just a step behind the top three contenders. It would need the three teams ahead of it to end the season with two conference losses as its win at Virginia State earlier in the season didn’t count as a loss for VSU.

    Remaining Challenges and Final Games

Johnson C. Smith faces Fayetteville State next, a team with a strong championship history, having been a staple in the CIAA Championship Game for the past few seasons. This could be Johnson C. Smith’s toughest game yet, as Fayetteville State is known for delivering under high-stakes situations. After that, Johnson C. Smith closes their regular season against Livingstone in a classic rivalry game that could add one final twist to their undefeated run.

Johnson C. Smith, HBCU Gameday, CIAA

For Virginia Union and Virginia State, their season-ending showdown could be a de facto playoff. If both teams maintain their records, this game will likely decide who earns a championship slot. The potential for an intense battle adds further excitement to an already competitive season.

CIAA Championship Hopes on the Line

As the 2024 CIAA season races toward its conclusion, these HBCU teams are each pushing to secure their place in the championship. With only two spots available, every play, every drive, and every game could shape the final outcome. While Johnson C. Smith and Virginia Union are currently in control, the unpredictable nature of college football means that anything can happen in these final weeks.

Whoever prevails will not only earn the CIAA title but also bring pride to their HBCU, representing the top level of talent and competition in the conference.

Virginia Union University’s star running back Jada Byers delivered an unforgettable performance in the Panthers’ 56-28 victory over Bowie State, firmly establishing his place among HBCU football legends. Byers rushed for a staggering 324 yards, setting a new school record and becoming Virginia Union’s all-time leading rusher with 5,311 career yards, surpassing Andre Braxton’s 5,008-yard mark from 1997-2000.

Byers’ six rushing touchdowns in this game also rewrote the Panthers’ history books. Not only did he break Braxton’s previous career record of 63 rushing touchdowns, pushing his own total to 66, but Byers also set a new single-game record for rushing touchdowns, breaking a 93-year-old record previously held by three different players. His relentless display on the field saw him score from distances that showcased both his speed and endurance, including a thrilling 75-yard run on the first play of the game that set the tone for his historic day.

With HBCU athletes continuing to make significant impacts, Byers’ record-breaking game adds a new chapter to Virginia Union’s storied athletic history. His achievement demonstrates the strength and talent that HBCU programs bring to college football, showcasing elite athleticism and dedication.

Byers, who had previously set the school’s rushing yard record with a 319-yard game in 2022, outdid even himself in this matchup, pushing his legacy to unprecedented heights. As HBCU football gains increasing attention, Byers’ performance underscores the exceptional skill and historic contributions of HBCU athletes in collegiate sports.

Virginia Union improved to 6-2 on the season, and 5-0 in CIAA play.

As we head into Week Eight of CIAA football, the standings reflect a dynamic and competitive season in HBCU football, shaped by both strong performances and significant off-field developments. Johnson C. Smith leads the way, undefeated at 7-0 overall and 4-0 in conference play after being Shaw on Saturday, solidifying its position as one of the top HBCU programs this year. Virginia Union, also 4-0 in the CIAA and 5-2 overall, has emerged as another dominant force, riding a four-game win streak.

A key factor affecting the standings this season has been the loss of Saint Augustine’s football program. Their absence has caused the league to shift from an eight-game conference format to seven-games. Notably, Virginia Union and Virginia State both benefitted when their Week Three losses to CIAA opponents did not count toward conference standings due to the adjustments. Virginia Union’s loss to Johnson C. Smith and Virginia State’s loss to Winston-Salem State were both excluded from the CIAA record, keeping both teams in a strong position despite early setbacks. The wins did count for JCSU and WSSU, who are set to meet on Saturday for a showdown that could go a long way to determining who makes the CIAA title game.

Winston-Salem State remains in the hunt with a 4-1 conference record and 6-2 overall, trailing closely behind Johnson C. Smith and Virginia Union. Virginia State, despite a 4-3 overall record, is 3-1 in conference play and still a strong contender as the season progresses.

Meanwhile, other HBCU programs like Livingstone (3-2 CIAA) and Shaw (2-3 CIAA) are trying to find consistency as they navigate a tough schedule.

Fayetteville State, Bowie State — two longtime Division II HBCU powers — and others are working to turn their seasons around and play spoiler. As we head into the final stretch, the CIAA standings reflect the resilience and competitiveness of these HBCU teams, each vying for a chance to make their mark in a season defined by change and opportunity.

Virginia Union secured a decisive 31-13 victory over CIAA rival Winston-Salem State in an HBCU showdown at Hovey Field.

The Panthers, powered by efficient offense and a stifling defense, outpaced the Rams early, building a commanding 24-3 lead by halftime. Virginia Union’s Mark Wright was key in managing the game, completing 13 of 17 passes for 166 yards and a touchdown, while the Panthers’ ground attack, led by Curtis Allen and Jada Byers, racked up 176 rushing yards.

The Rams struggled to establish their offense, managing just 69 rushing yards against a tough Virginia Union defense. Winston-Salem State quarterback Daylin Lee had moments of brilliance, throwing for 253 yards and a touchdown, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the balanced Panthers’ attack. The Rams’ only touchdown came in the fourth quarter when Lee connected with Brandon Person-Boyd on an 8-yard pass, closing the gap to 31-13.

With this win, VUU improved to 3-2 overall and 2-0 in CIAA play, while Winston-Salem State fell to 4-2 on the season and 1-1 in the conference. The victory showcased the strength of Virginia Union’s HBCU football tradition and served as a crucial statement in their pursuit of a defending its conference title.

WINSTON-SALEM, NC — Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) will face off against Virginia Union University (VUU) at Historic Hovey Field in Richmond, VA on Saturday in a historic HBCU football rivalry. This matchup holds significant weight, as the series between these two CIAA rivals is tied 23-23-1, with VUU winning the last two encounters in 2018 and 2019.

More importantly, this is a matchup of a team looking to defend the conference title against one looking to make its biggest statement yet that it is ready for one.

WSSU enters this game as one of the surprises of the HBCU football season, boasting a 4-1 record. That is its best start since 2014, when it made it all the way to the CIAA title game as one of the premiere HBCU programs of the time.

The Rams’ offense has been effective, averaging 23.2 points per game and accumulating 838 rushing yards over five games, averaging 167.6 yards per game on the ground . Trevon Hester leads the charge, averaging 75.8 rushing yards per game with three touchdowns. The Rams’ passing game, led by quarterback Daylin Lee, has added 745 yards and six touchdowns — including three last week in a win over Bowie State.

WSSU head coach Robert Massey said that despite several drops on Saturday that could have resulted in a bigger day on the stat sheet, he’s confident in the passing game.

“From a confidence standpoint we feel good that we can go run the ball or throw the ball if need be to beat folk,” Massey said. “Daylin had a heck of a game. Three touchdowns, no turnovers and he controlled the ball, controlled the field — controlled the game for us. He checked in and out of good situations from around run-pass stand point and we allow him to do that. So having a guy of his caliber that gives us confidence going into games, where we know is key can get us out of some bad situations.

Defensively, WSSU has been stout, allowing just 14.2 points per game while snagging eight interceptions. Justin Fleming has been a defensive standout with 40 tackles and two interceptions, while leading the team in sacks with three. The Rams’ ability to control the line of scrimmage has also been key, with the team racking up 12 sacks on the season — four against Bowie State last week.

Virginia Union University (2-2, 1-1 CIAA)

Virginia Union, sitting at 2-2, is coming off a dominant 42-7 victory against Shaw. They’ve shown offensive balance, averaging 354.3 total yards per game. Running back Jada Byers is the focal point of the offense, averaging 108.33 rushing yards per game and scoring five touchdowns.

Massey said Byers’ accolades are well-deserved, but he likes his defense heading into the matchup.

“I don’t know if just from the film that I’ve seen if he’s played against a defense that is as athletic as we are. We are very athletic on the back end. The receivers had a big, big week this past week in the throwing game, throwing the ball. But our DBs can cover when you’ve gotten a little older on the back end by way of the portal and it’s showing — and that’s important.

VUU quarterback Mark Wright has also been efficient, throwing for 471 yards and four touchdowns with a completion rate of 64.15%. Receiver Reginald Vick has been explosive, averaging 143 receiving yards per game with three touchdowns.

“We’re going to go there to stop the run and force them to pass,” Massey said. “And then we’ll get out, we’ll pin ears back and get after the quarterback — hopefully to take their fans out of the game and and keep outside of the ball game.”

Defensively, VUU has shown resilience, but it has allowed 367.7 yards per game. It has been vulnerable on third downs, allowing opponents to convert at a 51.11% rate , and its time of possession has been a concern, with opponents holding the ball nearly seven minutes longer per game . However, linebacker Shamar Graham has been a standout with 35 tackles, including three tackles for loss.

    Keys to the Game

    • WSSU’s Ground Game vs. VUU’s Front Seven: WSSU will likely lean on their rushing attack, led by Hester, to wear down VUU’s defense, which has allowed 150 rushing yards per game. VUU will need to contain the Rams’ potent running game to keep the contest close.
    • Virginia Union’s Passing Attack: VUU’s ability to stretch the field with Vick and Wright could challenge WSSU’s secondary, which has been strong, with eight interceptions. If VUU can establish the pass early, it may open lanes for Byers on the ground.
    • Turnovers and Time of Possession: WSSU’s defense has thrived on turnovers, and maintaining that trend will be crucial. VUU has struggled to control the clock, and if WSSU can sustain long drives, it may prove decisive.

This game promises to be a hard-fought battle between two historic HBCU powerhouses with much at stake as they try to break the series tie and gain a crucial CIAA win.

Virginia Union put itself back in the mix for the CIAA championship game and amongst the best in D2 HBCU football with a dominant 42-7 victory over Shaw University at Hovey Field. After a disappointing 21-16 loss to Johnson C. Smith last week in a tight CIAA matchup, the Panthers bounced back in impressive fashion, reaffirming their place among the top HBCU contenders.

The Panthers wasted no time, racing to a 21-0 lead in the first quarter. Quarterback Mark Wright set the tone with a 52-yard touchdown pass to Ricky Key Jr., and Jada Byers added a 53-yard scoring run, showcasing his explosiveness as he finished with 173 rushing yards. Virginia Union’s offense was firing on all cylinders, racking up 582 total yards, including 305 on the ground, while averaging 6.6 yards per carry.

    Jada Byers, Virginia Union HBCU

Shaw University struggled to find answers, managing just 268 yards of offense. Christian Peters’ 2-yard touchdown pass to Traquan Johnson in the third quarter was Shaw’s only score of the game as it struggled against Virginia Union’s relentless defense. The Bears’ rushing attack, which managed only 143 yards, couldn’t match the physicality of the Panthers.

Virginia Union’s balanced offensive and defensive performance put last week’s setback behind them and placed the team back in the championship conversation. The Panthers, now 2-2, will look to build on this momentum as they prepare to face 4-1 Winston-Salem State next week in another crucial CIAA showdown. Meanwhile, Shaw will need to regroup quickly to stay competitive in the conference race.

Pro Football Hall of Famer Ray Lewis recently spoke virtually at a team meeting for Deion Sanders and his Colorado football team. Over the course of his remarks, he touched on a variety of subjects including the 2023 death of his son Ray Lewis III, a former football player at HBCU Virginia Union University.

The elder Lewis brought his late son into the conversation as he was delivering motivational remarks to the Buffs.

“Even when you think you got time, you don’t have time. I lost my son at 28 years old because of the same foolishness that you guys have in front of you now. That’s the same foolishness that took my son out from an overdose. As a father, you will never recover from that, ever. So my son, I wear him around my neck the rest of my life, and he always says, let’s make today a great day,” Lewis said.

“I never understood how we take time for granted. How we act like time is a friend of ours. You know, Proverbs 3:5 says trust in the Lord with all of your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. Because if we do, we are in trouble. I lost him and I learned something. If you don’t have a pro mentality about life, the game will pass you too quickly,” he continued.

The autopsy report of Ray Lewis III found fentanyl, cocaine, and methamphetamine intoxication in his system after his death in June 2023. Alcohol and alprazolam were also found in his system as well. Lewis played the 2017 season for Virginia Union, where he recorded 37 tackles in his lone season playing HBCU football.

Ray Lewis talks about making each day great

Earlier in the conversation, Lewis told the Colorado players how he goes about his day-to-day at 49 years old after playing 17 years in the NFL.

“People live to die. I got to live. I get up every day and I figure out a way to get on my bike. At 49 years old, I got 50 miles today. Because the game is the game, and the game will come and the game go. But I’m going to tell you something that can never leave you is when you create the right relationship with God. And when you create this whole aura of a lifestyle, the game of life changes,” Lewis said.

The former Baltimore Raven and former teammate of Deion Sanders gave the players advice on how to reimagine how they start their day.

“I Guarantee you, ninety percent of everybody sitting in his locker gets up every day. And the first thing you grab is your phone, and that’s your equity. That’s your confirmation that you’re successful. Then ninety percent of you are spiritually dead. And when you find yourself spiritually dead, it’s hard to win. It’s easy to win games, easy, man. Talent can win you some games, but when you talk about going to that next level of life. Your mentality has to be totally different,” he said.

“I can’t start my day without picking up three books at one time. Without going through three (holding up books) because I know I’m flawed, I know I can’t please God, not with the thoughts I got. I can please him if I stay in his word.”

Earlier this spring Ray Lewis received his son’s degree from Virginia Union University posthumously.

Deion Sanders is entering his second season as head coach of Colorado after spending three seasons at HBCU Jackson State University.

The Hampton University-Virginia Union football series is one of the most significant rivalries in HBCU football history, rooted in tradition and fierce competition. This rivalry dates back to the early 20th century when both schools were founding members of the CIAA. The annual battles of the two private institutions, separated by roughly an hour, were a highlight of the conference. Over the years, the two programs met 83 times, with Virginia Union holding a 42-38-3 edge over Hampton.

The rivalry was particularly intense during the era of legendary head coach Joe Taylor, who had the unique distinction of coaching both programs. Taylor led Virginia Union from 1984 to 1991, where he built a powerhouse team, winning a CIAA title in 1986. His success at Virginia Union caught the attention of Hampton University, where he took the reins in 1992. Taylor transformed Hampton into a national contender, guiding the Pirates to multiple CIAA titles before leading the program to the MEAC and Division I-AA.

Taylor’s connection to both HBCU programs added an extra layer of intensity to the rivalry. His coaching philosophy, which emphasized discipline, hard work, and a commitment to excellence, became the hallmark of both programs under his leadership.

The two programs went their separate ways in the mid-1990s when Hampton catapulted itself into Division I-AA. Both programs eventually developed tighter rivalries with their closer conference counterparts – Virginia State for Virginia Union and Norfolk State for Hampton.

The rivalry was reignited in 2019 after a long hiatus, with Virginia Union knocking off its FCS competitor, reminding fans of the deep historical significance of these two programs.

The two schools are set to meet up on Sept. 7, 2024 – five years to the date of that most recent meeting.

This matchup not only honors the past but also serves as a bridge connecting generations of players, coaches, and fans who have shaped the legacy of HBCU football. The Hampton-Virginia Union series remains a symbol of excellence, tradition, and the enduring spirit of competition in HBCU athletics.

Virginia State has climbed to the top of the CIAA football rankings, overtaking the defending champion Virginia Union, which is predicted second to it’s in-state HBCU rival in 2024. This shift in rankings promises an exhilarating season as both teams have eyes for the CIAA championship.

Under the guidance of Dr. Henry Frazier, the Virginia State is embracing a challenging schedule against the defending SIAC champion and an FCS HBCU.

“We have a tough schedule, starting with Benedict and Norfolk State,” Frazier said.

Frazier emphasizes building toughness within his team which went 8-2 in 2023.

“Last year, I had a tough squad with graduate students. This year, it’s on me to ensure my team remains resilient,” he explained.

    HBCU conference CIAA Trophy

The Virginia Union, led by Dr. Alvin Parker, return nine starters on both offense and defense. With the top defense in the CIAA last season, the VUU is well-positioned for success. Key players include Isaac Anderson and Isaiah Dickens.

“Isaac Anderson is one of the best in the league,” Parker noted.

Virginia Union’s offense is powered by Jada Byers, a 2022 Harlon Hill finalist and the CIAA’s rushing leader in 2023. Supported by a formidable offensive line, Byers remains a crucial asset for the VUU.

Virginia State led the CIAA in total offense last season, with Virginia Union close behind. Despite both teams losing their starting quarterbacks, their offensive capabilities are expected to remain strong. Virginia Union’s defense, featuring key players like Anderson and Jamal Graham, should continue to be a dominant force.

Virginia State’s offensive lineman Bruno Onwuazor, who earned Second-Team All-CIAA honors last season, has also been named to the preseason All-CIAA team, underscoring his importance to the VSU.

The Panthers have a three-game winning streak against the Trojans, including a decisive 30-20 victory in Richmond. This streak adds extra motivation for the Trojans as they aim to break the Panthers’ dominance.

The Virginia State’s rise to the top ranking sets up an exciting CIAA football season. With Dr. Frazier’s strategic leadership, the Trojans are expected to challenge the Panthers, the reigning champions.

If you are a follower of all things basketball and/or all things Lebron James you may have already seen his son Bronny James at the NBA Draft Combine. On Monday Bronny showed a pretty deft touch from the three point line while working with a HBCU coach recently selected to assist with the Chicago event this week.

James finished his shooting drill going 19 of 25 from behind the line. Granted there’s no defense, but he was on the move which introduces fatigue and he still showed an impressive touch.

One of the coaches involved in the drill, and feeding the ball to James was the head women’s basketball coach at Winston-Salem State University, and a former point guard herself, L’Tona Samuels Lamonte. She can be seen in the video passing the ball to James as he rotated along the three-point line, and her voice can be heard as one of his loudest supporters as he continued to drain shots.

At the conclusion of the drill, Lamonte was the first coach to dap up James as he walked off the floor. Lamonte along with WSSU head men’s coach Cleo Hill Jr. and strength and conditioning coach Kerry Harbor were selected to work at the combine earlier this month.

    All Star Relationships

“I think it’s a great honor and a blessing to be invited by the NBA to be a part of their draft combine,” said Lamonte. “What a great way to go and learn more about our craft from the highest level, and bring that knowledge back to our athletes, the university, and the CIAA. I think Coach Cleo, his staff, our Men’s Basketball team, and Virginia Union were a great representation for our conference and have opened the door for this wonderful partnership.”

Winston-Salem State and Virginia Union played in the third annual NBA HBCU Classic at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis during NBA All-Star Weekend. The game was a great relationship builder between the two schools and the league. Virginia Union University’s Tierra Terry, the head coach of the VUU women’s basketball team, and Jay Butler, head coach of the VUU men’s basketball team are working the combine as well.

Lamonte’s role during the combine is to work all of the on court sessions and she was front and center during the action on Monday with James. Coaches from both of these HBCU institutions see the great opportunity that working at the combine offers.

“This is a great opportunity to attend the NBA combine and work with professional coaches to help young men prepare for the next chapter in their life of playing professional basketball,” said Butler.  “I can’t thank the NBA enough for allowing our Virginia Union Men the opportunity to play on All-Star Weekend and now giving me the chance to attend the NBA Combine in the same year.”

Business will pick up with Bronny on Tuesday

Back to Bronny James. What made more news than his shooting was the report that James was medically cleared to be drafted in the NBA. Nine months ago James suffered cardiac arrest and had a procedure to repair a congenital heart defect. After being sidelined for several months James finished his freshman season at USC averaging 4.8 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists in 19.4 minutes per game.

There’s been widespread speculation that if a team were to draft Bronny James, they could also land the services of his father, the all-time leading scorer in NBA history.

The world will get to see how well James stacks up against other NBA prospects on Tuesday when he competes in five on five action.

    Update from Coach Lamonte

After this article was published and once the NBA Combine wrapped up, Lamonte posted a quote about the experience she had.

“What an amazing opportunity to be able to work the NBA Combine. Not in a million years would i have ever dreamed of this opportunity. God can blow your mind when you listen and do his will and get out your own way. I have to thank the NBA for this opportunity. These 5 days were Awesome and the networking, friendships, and laughs were a blast. From what I’ve been told i went viral,” wrote Lamonte.

NFL legend Ray Lewis picked up a degree from an HBCU this weekend. It wasn’t his own, though.

The legendary Baltimore Ravens star and Pro Football Hall of Famer picked up the degree for his late son, Ray Lewis III, from Virginia Union University in Richmond. He commemorated the occasion with an Instagram post.

“My son, I’m so proud of you,” Lewis wrote. “Heaven called you, but thanks to Virginia Union we grabbed your degree for you today baby boy.”

Ray Lewis III passed away on June 14, 2023 after medical professionals found him unresponsive.

“We will see you again soon enough, to all the other families whose children didn’t make it to walk cross the stage. God Bless you!!! Celebrate every step our children take it life, even the steps we don’t like. Ray 3rd “we made today a great day!!!”

After graduating from high school in 2013, Ray Lewis III committed to play college football at the University of Miami. He joined the Miami Hurricanes football team as a running back, following in the footsteps of his NFL superstar father. However, he struggled to make a constant impact on the field during his time at Miami.

    Ray Lewis III, HBCU

Lewis appeared in nine games but primarily played on special teams as a freshman in 2013. He recorded 15 rushing yards on four carries and had six receptions for 47 yards. In 2014, he saw limited action and rushed for 21 yards on five carries and caught two passes for 14 yards.

Lewis transferred to Coastal Carolina University, a Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) program back in 2015. He joined the Chanticleers football team but was unable to have a big impact. Lewis mostly played as a reserve running back and participated on special teams.

Ray Lewis III’s football career took a turn after the 2016 season when he was arrested and charged with criminal sexual conduct in South Carolina. As a result, he was suspended from the football team.

He eventually found a home at the HBCU, where he played the 2017 season. He recorded 37 tackles in his lone season for the CIAA program.

Now Ray Lewis the father has his son’s degree as he’s dedicated to his memory living on.

Wyche earned a third-team All-Metro honor in 2022 and a first-team All-Metro designation in 2023.  He was a 2024 McDonald’s All-American Southeast Nominee.  Besides scoring over 1,000 points, he had over 200 Assists, over 100 steals, earned First Team All-Metro, 2022-2023 VHSL Class 4 Player of the Year, 2022-2023 VHSL Class 4 1st Team All-State, and 2022-2023 VHSL Region 4B Player of the Year honors. Now he’s headed to an HBCU.

“We are extremely excited about the signing of KJ Wyche,” said Virginia Union University Head Men’s Basketball Coach Jay Butler.  “Anytime you can take care of your home with a two-time Virginia State Player of the Year is good for the program and the city of Richmond. He will bring a lot of excitement to an already talented core of guards returning on the roster.”

Virginia Union University’s Kaylen Vines only scored three points in the game, but if he never scores another point, people will be talking about his scoring for a long time to come.

Vines took an in-bounds pass and dunked the ball with 2.2 seconds left to play to tie VUU’s game with Virginia State University on Saturday, February 24, in Petersburg, Va.

Vines then sank a pressure-loaded free throw to give the Panthers a 64-63 win over the Trojans.

The win, coupled with Lincoln University’s loss to Bowie State University, earned the Panthers Co-Champions of the Northern Division of the CIAA in the regular-season finale.

VUU’s Tahj Harding led the Panthers with 20 points while teammate Joshua Caine added 13 points in the win.

Virginia Union’s Travis Vaughn added 11 points while Vines and Jonathan Salazar grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.

“It was a rough, tough game,” said VUU Head Men’s Basketball Coach Jay Butler.  “I thought the kids kept fighting to tie the game, they played hard and with a lot of heart.  At one point we looked up at the clock and we were down 10, but I told them we were going to play it out and keep fighting.”

Virginia Union will enter the 2024 CIAA Tournament with a 13-17 overall record, but have a 7-3 Northern Division record along with Lincoln to capture the co-championship.

Virginia Union has a long, storied basketball history that dates back nearly a century. It includes many of the greatest players in CIAA, HBCU and small college basketball history. Here is an all-time starting five as well as some other notable names from Virginia Union basketball history.

    AJ English, Virginia Union

A native of Wilmington, DE, English played for Virginia Union University from 1986—1990 where he scored 2,396 points, including a single-season school record of 1,001 points in 1989-90. In 1990, English was named CIAA Player of the Year, NCAA Division II National Player of the Year and helped lead the Panthers to their second national championship under Head Coach Dave Robbins. English was an All-CIAA selection three times (1988, 1989 and 1990) and was named to the CIAA All-Tournament team in 1989 and 1990.

He went on to be drafted by the Washington Bullets in the second round of the 1990 NBA Draft.

As VUU’s all-time leading scorer with 2,758 points, Davis received all-conference honors each of his three years and was named the 1969 CIAA Player of the Year. He is the second all-time leading scorer in the CIAA, second only to Earl Monroe. His scoring averages for his three seasons: 31, 36 and 32 points per game. He was selected in the first round (14th overall) by the Baltimore Bullets.

    Terry Davis, Virginia Union

Davis and the Panthers won two CIAA Men’s Basketball Championships in 1987 and 1989 while advancing to the NCAA Tournament during all four years of his career. He was named to the NABC Division II All-American Team twice, in 1988 and 1989. After his collegiate career, Davis played as a power forward and center for the Miami Heat, Dallas Mavericks, Washington Wizards, and Denver Nuggets during a 12-year career in the National Basketball Association (NBA). He later returned to his alma mater as an assistant men’s basketball coach.

(Indianapolis, IN) AND1, the legendary footwear and apparel brand, is set to premiere The Chosen One, a mini documentary on the story of Ben Wallace during the upcoming NBA All-Star Weekend. The exclusive screening event will take place in Indianapolis on Saturday, February 17th at 6:30pm ET. Following the premiere, Wallace will sit down with Ros Gold-Onwude, NBA Analyst & Host, for a fireside chat.

This year will mark the 20th anniversary of Wallace’s championship victory with the Detroit Pistons in 2004. AND1 recognizes there is no better time to celebrate the first and only undrafted Hall of Famer that donned their shoes during his storied career in the NBA. The mini-documentary, produced by AND1 Entertainment, highlights Wallace’s inspiring journey — from his HBCU experience at Virginia Union to his shot at the league, as told by the legend himself.

    Ben Wallace

While Wallace was known for sporting the AND1 Chosen One sneakers on the court, Ben also embodies AND1’s values: raw talent, dedication, and an unmatched work ethic. This powerful combination led the undrafted player to beat the odds by becoming an NBA champion and four-time Defensive Player of the Year. “AND1 Entertainment is excited to showcase this dynamic mini documentary on the incredible and inspiring hoops legend that is Ben Wallace. He has left a large footprint on the game and we’re proud to help tell his story,” said Dexter Gordon, Brand Director at AND1.

The celebration comes on the heels of AND1’s milestone 30th Anniversary last year. AND1 is excited to continue its legacy of honoring the people and communities that built the brand, fostering the love of the game, and ushering in new, raw talent. This year, AND1 will continue celebrating community, hard work, and freedom of expression with new shoe releases, their iconic Open Run Tour, Paint the Park initiatives, and support of the HBCU high school basketball showcase. Upcoming events will include legendary AND1 mixtape OGs and newly signed streetballer featured in the 2023 Open Run Tour, Leaky Roof.

The winner of the third-annual Chris Paul HBCU Tip-Off Classic is none other than Winston-Salem State, CP3’s alma mater.

WSSU controlled the game from start to finish, beating two-time Chris Paul HBCU Tip-Off Classic champion Virginia Union 65-56 in the title game in Utica, Connecticut.

The Rams improved to 4-1 on the season, led by 16 points and six rebounds from Issac Parson. Imajae Dodd recorded a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds while Jaylen Alston scored 10 points.

WSSU went 20-29 from the free-throw line. They scored 24 points in the paint, 32 second-chance points and 17 bench points. The Rams grabbed 30 rebounds with 15 being offensive in the first half.

WSSU jumped out to a 15-4 lead with 15:06 left in the first half. Ketron “KC” Shaw gave WSSU a 20-point lead, 33-13, on two made free-throws with 2:56 left in the half.

Virginia Union closed out the half on an 11-2 run to cut the deficit to 35-24 at halftime.

In the second half, the Rams went on an 8-0 run capped off by a Jahnarious Snell lay-up with 45-29 with 14:39 left. Issac Parson hit a three-pointer which made the score 51-31 with 12:10 left. Imajae Dodd extended the Rams lead to 58-42 on a made free-throw with 6:32 left.

Virginia Union University’s Jonathan Salazar scored 13 points and had seven rebounds to lead VUU, which falls to 2-4 on the season.

“I thought we had an amazing run at the CP3 tournament, winning back-to-back championships, but all good things must come to an end and Winston Salem State played like the defending CIAA Champs,” said VUU Head Men’s Basketball Coach Jay Butler.  “They came out and jumped on us early, getting several opportunities to score with their offensive rebounding throughout the game. They outrebounded us 50-26 and that was the difference in the ballgame. We have a quick turnaround with another road game against Shepherd University, so we must improve on our rebounding to give us a chance at getting another win on the road.”

Chris Paul is a Winston-Salem State University alumnus, graduating with a degree in communications in fall 2022.

NBA legend and Winston-Salem State University graduate Chris Paul is tipping off another year of highlighting HBCU basketball this weekend.

The Chris Paul Family Foundation and Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame are set to host the third-annual CP3 HBCU Tip-Off this weekend. The event will take place November 18-19 at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut. It is designed to showcase non-Division I HBCUs.

“As an HBCU graduate himself, Chris Paul has long been a prominent voice for the empowerment of HBCU athletes,” said John L. Doleva, President and CEO of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. “The Hall of Fame is honored to work alongside Chris to create opportunities for these student-athletes, and we look forward to watching them play in two competitive weekends of basketball.”

This year’s participants are Cheyney (PA) University, Tuskegee University, Winston-Salem State University and Virginia Union University.

    Chris Paul HBCU Tip-Off VUU

VUU has won both iterations of this event so far, defeating Winston-Salem State in 2021 in the inaugural title game and Xavier University of Louisiana last year. It comes into Saturday’s game against Cheyney 1-3 after losing just eight games all season in 2022-2023.

Cheyney is making its first showing in the CP3 HBCU Tip-Off. A one-time member of the NCAA Division II, it is currently outside the NCAA. Its only available result is a 100-52 loss to D1 Morgan State of the MEAC.

The winner of that game, set to start at 5:30 PM will face the Winston-Salem State/Tuskegee winner from the 8 PM game.

Tuskegee is making its first showing in the CP3 HBCU Tip-Off. TU won 20 games last season, but comes into the matchup with Winston-Salem State 0-2 on the season.

WSSU competed in the inaugural challenge in 2021, defeating Clark Atlanta and losing to Virginia Union. That loss started a four-game losing streak to VUU that lasted until the 2023 CIAA semifinal when it came up with a one-point win. WSSU head coach Cleo Hill Jr. talked about the weekend after picking up his second win in three games on Tuesday.

“That’s one of our better trips playing in a Chris Paul Mohegan Sun in Connecticut. Very nice facility. Very nice And they really take care of us,” Hill said. “But we’re looking forward to a matchup with Tuskegee out of the SIAC.  They’ve been very good for the last couple of years. And then, we’ll see what happens with Virginia Union and my own old stomping ground, Cheyney State University. We’ll see what happens with them. You know, hopefully we take care of Tuskegee and it’ll be nice to meet VUU again in championship play.”

Virginia Union University, fresh off its first CIAA championship in over 20 years, is headed back to the NCAA Division II playoffs.

The playoff pairings were announced on Sunday and Virginia Union was placed in Super Region I and will travel to Pennsylvania to face Kutztown.

    NCAA playoffs, Virginia Union University

Virginia Union University enters the postseason with a 10-1 record, with its lone loss coming at the hands of the same Fayetteville State team it beat on Saturday to claim the CIAA title. It was the 11th in program history and the first since 2001.

Now VUU finds itself back in the postseason for the second consecutive year. It was the third seed in Super Region II last year as it fell to Wingate at home.

Kutztown enters the playoffs with a 9-2 record fresh off a win over an impressive Slippery Rock program that gave the program its second PSAC title in the past three seasons.

VUU joins Benedict College as the two HBCU representatives in the NCAA Division II playoffs. Both programs made the playoffs last season before losing to Wingate University in their respective first games.

SALEM, VA – The CIAA football championship trophy is headed back to Virginia Union University after more than two decades.

VUU jumped out to an early lead and stymied what little momentum Fayetteville State had to come up with a 21-10 win to claim its 11th CIAA title in school history.

Jada Byers carried the load for Virginia Union, running 40 times for 135 yards and two scores to lead the way as VUU controlled time of possession. Virginia Union held the ball for nearly 40 minutes.

    Virginia Union,

When Fayetteville State did get the ball, its offense was largely ineffective. It put up only 130 yards of total offense, and 64 yards of that came on one play as Barry Elliot caught a early-third quarter pass that put FSU at the VUU goal line, but it was unable to punch it in and had to settle for a field goal. FSU came up with 66 yards on 41 plays outside of that big pass play.

Byers scored the first and last touchdowns for Virginia Union while quarterback Christian Allen plunged in for the second score to give FSU a 14-0 lead late in the second quarter.

The Broncos finally got on the board following Anderson’s run with a 91-yard kick return from Barry Elliot to cut the lead to 14-7 in favor of the Panthers as the sun set in Salem.

The loss puts Fayetteville State’s record as 8-3, ending an eight-game win streak and likely its chances of going to the NCAA Division II playoffs. Saturday’s game was the sixth consecutive title game appearance for FSU, with last year’s win over Chowan the lone win.

Virginia Union University avenged its lone loss of the season and improved to 10-1 on the year. It will likely be headed back to the NCAA Division II playoffs for the second consecutive season.

But in the mean time, the CIAA title is coming back to Lombardy Street.

Two of HBCU basketball’s most historic programs, Virginia Union and Winston-Salem State, will face each other in an all-CIAA game at NBA All-Star Weekend.

VUU and WSSU will participate in the third annual NBA x HBCU Classic. The game will be played at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, IN, on Feb. 17 – the day before the NBA All-Star Game.

Virginia Union and Winston-Salem State have been CIAA rivals for nearly 80 years, with both schools having won NCAA titles, multiple NBA draft picks and Basketball Hall of Famers.

Winston-Salem State forward Jon Hicklin makes a move against Virginia Union.

VUU finished the 2022-2023 season with a 24-8 record, and an NCAA Tournament appearance.

Winston-Salem State is coming off a 21-9 season that resulted in the program’s 13th CIAA title of all-time – second only to Virginia Union. WSSU knocked off VUU in the CIAA semifinals before beating Lincoln in the title game.

The two teams are both also competing in the Chris Paul HBCU Tip-Off Challenge.

RICHMOND, VA– Virginia Union, at long last, is finally headed back to the CIAA title game.

VUU got off to a fast start and took advantage of woeful special teams play to beat rival Virginia State 30-20 in front of a capacity crowd at Hovey Stadium on Saturday in Richmond. Virginia Union will meet defending CIAA champion Fayetteville State in the CIAA title game in Salem, VA on Nov. 11. FSU beat VUU at home in September.

    Virginia Union

Christian Reid threw four touchdown passes for Virginia Union, including one to Jada Byers. Byers finished the day with 155 yards on 27 rushes. Roy Jackson led VUU with 127 yards on three catches, including a score.

VSU had 465 yards of total offense to VUU’s 337, but it had special teams issues all day. The first field goal attempt hit the upright. Its second PAT was blocked and returned for two points. Another was blocked and returned in the third quarter, but was overpowered by a VUU penalty. Kyle Miller missed two field goals in the fourth.

Virginia State finishes the regular season 8-2. Virginia Union improves to 9-1 as it returns to the CIAA title game for the first time since 2010. Its last CIAA title came in 2001.
