Jermaine Woods stood courtside at the MEAC Tournament in Hampton Roads, soaking in the atmosphere where his basketball journey began. Coaching Coppin State during the renowned HBCU basketball event was more than just a professional milestone—it was an emotional homecoming. Now, Woods’ team is set for a semifinal showdown on Friday against Norfolk State, which will feel like a home game for Norfolk State, adding another layer of excitement and relevance to his return.

“It’s good to be at home and in front of my family and friends,” Woods said proudly. His basketball roots trace back to Granby High School, where he first gained recognition. Woods further showcased his talents at Christopher Newport University, becoming a Division III All-American. He also proudly mentioned his educational ties to another HBCU, Norfolk State University, noting, “That’s my second degree from there, though. So Norfolk State is my second degree of my three and a half.”

Woods’ legacy in Hampton Roads spans beyond his playing career. He was instrumental in Booker T. Washington High School’s 2006 Group AAA State Boys Basketball Championship victory. Later, Woods led the Maury High School girls’ basketball team to an outstanding 61-18 record over three seasons and spearheaded Bryant & Stratton’s inaugural men’s basketball season.

“Virginia, now as the head coach coaching back at the Scope where I coached and played? It’s a big deal. And I’m a great fan. I won’t take it for granted,” Woods emphasized.

Returning for the MEAC tournaments brought mixed feelings of excitement and nervousness for Woods. “I didn’t sleep at all. I haven’t been sleeping. Haven’t eaten either. So I need to eat. I’m going to have a good meal today,” he humorously shared. Reflecting on local hospitality, he joked, “People are feeding us good. We have nice, fancy restaurants every day, and people are taking care of us.”

Woods deeply appreciated the support from the Hampton Roads community. “I appreciate everyone in the city for the love they showed me when I return. It’s actually unbelievable. It’s an honor,” he said. The semifinal matchup against Norfolk State, his alma mater, amplifies the emotion and competitive spirit of his homecoming. The Norfolk State supporters will likely dominate the crowd, adding another challenge and an exciting atmosphere to the matchup. Coppin State players like Tiffany Hammond, Angel Jones, and Leila Lawrence have been crucial to the team’s tournament run, stepping up in critical moments.

Despite personal accolades and hometown warmth, Woods remained focused on team success. He praised his Coppin State team’s resilience during challenging moments in HBCU basketball matchups, stating, “We didn’t let offensive struggles dictate our defense.” Coppin State’s performance this year builds on their ongoing pursuit of MEAC success, and a semifinal victory would significantly enhance their standing in the conference.

As Woods coached Coppin State at the heart of the MEAC tournaments, his return underscored his ongoing commitment to HBCU sports, celebrating his past and creating new basketball legacies. A victory on Friday could propel Coppin State closer to a championship, adding another memorable chapter to Woods’ impactful homecoming.

At one time, Laila Lawrence didn’t see basketball in her future. Now, she’s one of Coppin State’s all-time greats, leading her HBCU to the MEAC Tournament semifinals after a dominant performance in the quarterfinals against North Carolina Central. With a looming matchup against Norfolk State and Kierra Wheeler, this tournament marks her final chance at an NCAA berth.

A Legacy Defined by Resilience

Lawrence’s story is one of perseverance. Before arriving at Coppin State, she had all but walked away from the game. “I didn’t want to play basketball,” she admitted. “I was grinding, working hard, but I just had to believe in myself.”That belief turned into one of the most decorated careers in Coppin State history. Over just two seasons, Lawrence has climbed into the program’s top 15 in both points and rebounds and sits 10th in blocks. The HBCU WBB star is fourth in the nation in double-doubles, securing her 20th of the season with a 15-point, 13-rebound, 4-steal, and 3-block performance in the MEAC quarterfinals.

HBCU MEAC Coppin State
A Defensive Powerhouse

Her impact extends beyond scoring and rebounding. She is the MEAC’s back-to-back Defensive Player of the Year and has twice swept the conference’s Player and Defensive Player of the Week honors—something no MEAC player has done since the 2016-17 season.

Her defensive presence is elite. When Coppin State played against LSU last season, she held Angel Reese—one of the top players in the nation—to just six rebounds. She also grabbed 25 rebounds against Delaware State, the most in a single game by any Division I player last season, outpacing Stanford’s Cameron Brink By 1.

How Does She Rank Among Coppin State’s Greats?

Few players in Coppin State history have had the impact Lawrence has. She is only the 10th player in school history to score over 500 points in a season. Additionally, she’s one the only player nationwide averaging at least 15 points, 9 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, and 1 block per game.

When discussing Coppin’s all-time greats like Rashida Suber and Shalamar Oakley, Lawrence’s name now belongs in that conversation.

The Bond That Brought Her Back to the Game

More than her numbers, Lawrence’s impact at Coppin State is about belief—both in herself and from those around her. “Coach, that’s my dog,” she said with a smile. “Without him, I don’t think I would have ever found my love for the game again. He’s like a second brother.”Her connection with the team and the coaching staff helped her rediscover her passion for the game. Now, she wants her legacy to inspire others: “Just believe in yourself. Never give up, no matter what.”

What’s Next?

With her final MEAC Tournament run underway, Lawrence has one last shot at the NCAA Tournament. Her HBCU hoops legacy is cemented whether or not Coppin State punches its ticket.”Coppin is my family,” she said. “I love it here. Everybody loves me. We always play with heart.”And when the final buzzer sounds, whether in the semifinals, the championship, or beyond, Laila Lawrence will leave Coppin State as one of its all-time greats.

BALTIMORE, MD – As the final buzzer sounded in the MEAC quarterfinals, former NBA veteran Larry Stewart walked off the court with his HBCU wearing a mix of frustration and determination in his perspiration. His Coppin State squad had just fallen short in a grueling 68-63 battle against South Carolina State. It was a game that showcased the progress his team has made but also underscored the challenges that still lie ahead.

Stewart, an HBCU basketball legend, knows what it takes to win. In 1990, he led Coppin State to its first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance, putting the program on the national stage. A tough, blue-collar forward out of Philadelphia, Stewart defied the odds to carve out a six-year NBA career. He made history as the first undrafted player to earn an All-NBA Rookie Team selection. Now, as he finishes his second year as Coppin’s head coach, he’s determined to bring that same fight and resilience to his program.

Building a Competitive HBCU Program

Since taking over on May 2, 2023, Stewart has faced an uphill battle in turning Coppin State basketball into a contender. This past season was a testament to that grind. Plagued by injuries and roster limitations, the Eagles still managed to compete, showing flashes of promise.

“I most definitely think we’re right there,” Stewart said after the quarterfinal loss. “We were without our second conference scorer, Ryan Archie, all year. Two other key guys, Cam Liggins and Jonathan Dunn, weren’t available either. We’ve been shorthanded all season. But we fought through it.”

The fight was evident against South Carolina State. Coppin took control early and led at halftime. But turnovers – 13 in the second half alone – proved costly.

“We can’t play for only 20 minutes,” Stewart admitted. “When you’re up against a tough team, you have to be locked in for the full 40. The second half, we ended up with 13 turnovers and a half. That took away shots. We ended up scoring 22 points in the second half. You can’t do those things when you play very tough and deep teams.”

Despite the setback, Stewart refuses to dwell on the negatives. He sees the progress, the buy-in from his players, and the competitive spirit they’ve developed. “We just need to add a few more pieces,” he said. “And we’ll be right there.”

From Philly to the NBA to Coppin State

Growing up in Philadelphia, Stewart learned early what it meant to battle through adversity. That mentality has shaped his coaching style.

“I’m from Philly,” Stewart said. “I don’t know any other way. We grind. We don’t make excuses. These guys will tell you, I just try to motivate them and keep them light on the stadium as the next-man-up mentality. We fought, man. That’s what we’re about.”

His players have adopted that mindset. Guard Toby Nnadozie, one of Coppin’s key contributors, credits Stewart for instilling that toughness in the team.

“It’s been an honor playing for Coach Stewart,” Nnadozie said. “He was Mr. Coppin back in his day. He went to the NBA. And he’s teaching us not just about basketball, but how to be better men. It’s deeper than the game.”

Stewart sees the same grit in his players that he saw growing up in Philly. “You don’t come from North Philly and not learn how to fight for what you want,” Stewart said. “I tell my guys all the time, basketball is life. You handle adversity on this court the same way you do in real life—by working harder, staying tough, and never backing down.”

Looking Ahead: Coppin State’s Future in HBCU Basketball

With Year Two now in the books, Stewart is already looking toward next season. He’s focused on recruiting, developing his returning players, and making sure Coppin State basketball takes another step forward.

“I appreciate my guys for fighting all year,” he said. “Now, it’s about getting back to work and building for next year. We will get better results.”

For Larry Stewart, Coppin State is more than just a coaching job – it’s home. He’s determined to restore the HBCU basketball program to prominence, just like he did as a player over 30 years ago.

And if there’s one thing that’s certain, it’s that Larry Stewart isn’t backing down from the challenge.

BALTIMORE – Julius Ellerbe III led three Coppin State men’s basketball players in double figures with 16 points as CSU prevailed over HBCU hoops power player NC Central (NCCU), 63-61, on Saturday afternoon in the MEAC opener for both teams at PEC Arena. Coppin now stands at 2-13 overall while NCCU fell to 7-11.

Checking the Box Score

  • Ellerbe hit 4-of-8 shots from the floor with a pair of threes and 6-of-8 from the line to lead the Navy & Gold in scoring.  He also had a game-high eight rebounds.
  • Camaren Sparrow matched a career-high with 14 points, burying four 3-pointers to go with five assists which were also career-best.
  • Toby Nnadozie added 11 points while matching Sparrow with five assists and he was followed by Peter Oduro and Jonathan Dunn with eight points apiece, and Khali Horton with six.
  • Coppin’s 16 assists on 20 made baskets was a season-best, helping them to victory despite being narrowly outshot, 43.4% to 42.6%.
  • CSU held NCCU to just one 3-pointer on 15 attempts while Coppin hit a season-high nine shots from deep on 18 attempts.
  • NC Central was led by Po’Boigh King with 18 points, its only player in double figures.
  • This was the first time that Coppin defeated NCCU at home since February 18, 2016, snapping a five-game streak.

How it Happened

  • Coppin opened the MEAC contest on an 8-0 run, getting threes from Nnadozie and Sparrow, followed by a layup by Dunn.
  • NC Central rallied to tie the score at ten with 11:33 remaining and the rest of the half featured five lead changes and two ties before NCCU opened up a 30-23 lead at the half of the HBCU hoops contest.
  • Nnadozie opened the second half the same way as the first, with a three, and Coppin kept clawing at the deficit to tie the score and take the lead on a pair of free throws by Oduro at the 14:55 mark.
  • A three by Sparrow with 12:10 remaining, upped Coppin’s lead to 43-38 before a layup by Central on the ensuing possession made it a one-possession game.
  • Ellerbe responded with an old-fashioned three-point play and added a three after a Central miss, giving Coppin its largest lead at 49-40 with 10:18 left to play.
  • Seven-straight points by Central cut Coppin’s advantage to 49-47 with 7:13 left before Nnadozie sunk a three, extending the lead back to five.
  • Coppin countered every Central basket with one of its own, highlighted by a layup by Dunn, and after a block by Horton, got a thunderous two-handed slam by Dunn with 3:52 remaining, giving CSU a 59-52 lead.
  • Oduro had a key layup with 2:45 left and Horton hit both free throws with just under two minutes remaining to keep the lead at five.
  • Central hit three free throws down the stretch and its potential game-tying jumper at the buzzer was off the mark, giving Coppin State the HBCU hoops upset.

Up Next: Coppin is scheduled to host South Carolina State in an 8:00 pm MEAC tipoff on Monday, January 6 which will air on ESPN+ and WNST 1570 AM.

As the HBCU women’s basketball season heats up, Norfolk State, Coppin State, and Howard University of the MEAC are vying to secure a possible historic NCAA tournament seed. For decades, HBCU women’s basketball programs have faced an uphill battle for recognition in March Madness, often being relegated to 16 seeds, the lowest possible placement in the NCAA tournament field.

Historical Context: HBCUs in the NCAA Tournament

The 1982 inaugural DI women’s basketball tournament featured three HBCUs: Howard, Jackson State, and Cheyney. Cheyney set the gold standard for HBCUs, reaching the Final Four three times and the National Championship game in 1982, where they finished as runners-up to Louisiana Tech. Their success remains the pinnacle of HBCU women’s basketball.

Since then, 19 HBCU women’s programs have participated in March Madness, but victories have been rare. Only Cheyney, South Carolina State, and Howard have won games, and Howard is the only HBCU to win since the tournament expanded to 64 teams.

HBCUs have typically been seeded at the bottom:

  • 16-seeds: Assigned 34 times, with only one win.
  • Highest seed: No. 12 (achieved three times before 1995).

Where We Are Now: Norfolk State, Coppin State, and Howard

With March Madness on the horizon, the MEAC’s top teams—Norfolk State, Coppin State, and Howard—are fighting for more than just a tournament berth. They aim to break the cycle of low seeds and prove that HBCU programs deserve better representation.

Norfolk State: Leading the Pack

Norfolk State defeats Howard University basketball HBCU women’s basketball

Norfolk State is the MEAC’s strongest contender this season. At 12-4, they hold the highest NET ranking (118) of any MEAC team and are ranked 13th in the College Insider Mid-Major Top 25 poll. Their balanced play, highlighted by a defense that forces 11.3 steals per game, positions them as the team to beat.

Key wins over Missouri and Auburn (SEC) and Wyoming (Mountain West) showcase their ability to compete with teams from powerhouse conferences. Though they fell to South Carolina in the 2023 tournament as a 16-seed, this year’s resume gives them a real shot at a higher placement.

Historical Tournament Record: Norfolk State is 0-3 in NCAA play, with their last appearance in 2024 as a 16-seed. Their previous games have all been against top-seeded teams.

What They Need to Do:

  • Dominate MEAC play, particularly against Coppin State and Howard.
  • Win the conference tournament to secure an automatic bid.
  • Avoid bad losses that could weaken their NET ranking.

Coppin State: The Underdog with Potential

Coppin State enters conference play with a 9-7 record and a NET ranking of 145. They are also receiving votes in the College Insider Mid-Major poll. The Eagles boast key wins over Arizona State (Pac-12) and Kent State, a team receiving votes in the same poll. These victories demonstrate their ability to rise to the occasion.

Led by Laila Lawrence, who averages 18.2 points and 10.1 rebounds per game, Coppin State has the talent to compete. However, inconsistency, particularly in road games, has been their Achilles’ heel.

Historical Tournament Record: Coppin State is 0-3, last appearing in 2008 as a 16-seed. Despite competitive performances, they have yet to break through for a win.

What They Need to Do:

  • Build on their non-conference momentum by performing consistently in MEAC play.
  • Use Lawrence’s dominance to secure key wins, especially on the road.
  • Win the MEAC tournament to guarantee a spot in March Madness.

Howard: The Long Shot

Howard is a storied program, but this season has been a challenge. At 6-8 with a NET ranking of 214, the Bison face an uphill battle. Destiny Howell leads the team with 15.6 points per game, but the team’s shooting struggles (36.7% FG, 23.8% 3PT) and rebounding issues (-1.9 margin) have been obstacles.

Howard made history in 1982, becoming one of the first HBCUs to compete in the NCAA tournament. In 2022, they won their first game against Incarnate Word before falling to South Carolina in the second round. They remain the only HBCU to win a game in the 64-team era.

Historical Tournament Record: Howard is 1-7 in NCAA play, with their lone win in 2022.

What They Need to Do:

  • Improve offensive efficiency and rebounding.
  • Secure key wins against Norfolk State and Coppin State in conference play.
  • Rely on their legacy and fight for a conference title to punch their ticket.

The Case for a Higher Seed

For decades, HBCUs have been boxed into lower seeds, limiting their chances for success in the tournament. Norfolk State, with its strong resume and national ranking, is the best bet to break this trend. Coppin State’s key non-conference wins also make them a contender, but they must be more consistent. Howard, despite its legacy, faces too many challenges to seriously contend for a higher seed this season.

Why It Matters

Breaking the 16-seed barrier would do more than elevate an HBCU program; A higher seed would open the door for more competitive matchups and potential upsets, further showcasing the strength of HBCU women’s basketball.

As conference play unfolds, Norfolk State, Coppin State, and Howard carry the hopes of continuing a legacy of excellence and representation on the national stage. This could be the year an HBCU team changes the narrative in March Madness. Stay tuned.

Coppin State women’s basketball secured a historic 74-68 overtime victory against Arizona State on December 5, 2024. The win marks the first time any Coppin State athletic program has defeated a Power 4 opponent, making it a milestone for the HBCU. Angel Jones and Laila Lawrence combined for 43 points as Coppin State’s women’s basketball team knocked off Big 12 opponent Arizona State, 74-68 in overtime on Thursday night at PEC Arena.

Coppin State’s starters carried the load, scoring all 74 points. Angel Jones led with 23 points and key free throws in overtime, while Laila Lawrence added 20 points and 9 rebounds. Their combined efforts outpaced Arizona State’s defense.

“We executed the game plan,” said Jones. “If we’re confident in our abilities, we can succeed.”

Head coach Jermaine Woods credited the win to disciplined defense. The team forced 20 turnovers and limited Arizona State’s bigs by doubling in the post and forcing outside shots.

“Our goal was to make them uncomfortable,” said Woods. “The players executed the plan perfectly.”

HBCU

Despite being outrebounded, Coppin State minimized second-chance opportunities, holding Arizona State to just ten offensive rebounds.

Jones and Lawrence highlighted why they are key players for the Eagles. Lawrence emphasized the team’s focus on effort and preparation.

“We work hard every practice, no matter how tired we are,” she said. “It’s about giving our best every time.”

This victory goes beyond a single game, showcasing the strength of HBCU athletics. Woods highlighted the importance of such wins in bringing recognition to Coppin State and other HBCUs.

“We are a Division I program, and on any day, we can compete,” he said.

As Coppin State heads into MEAC play, this win fuels momentum and confidence. It’s a clear statement: HBCU basketball can compete on the national stage.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — The South Carolina women showed why they’re ranked No. 1 with a commanding 92-60 victory over HBCU Coppin State on Thursday night, extending their winning streak to 41 games. MiLaysia Fulwiley led the charge with 23 points, while Chloe Kitts delivered a double-double of 19 points and 10 rebounds in the team’s home opener.

Before the game, South Carolina women’s fans celebrated as the Gamecocks unfurled their national championship banner commemorating last season’s perfect 38-0 run. Once the festivities ended, the team quickly went to work, showcasing their dominance in every facet of the game. The South Carolina women out-rebounded Coppin State 51-23 and received significant contributions from their bench, which outscored the Eagles 48-15.

Dawn Staley South Carolina, HBCU

The game turned decisively in the first quarter. After Laila Lawrence’s three-pointer gave the HBCU a 16-13 lead, the South Carolina women responded with a 10-0 run to close the quarter. The Gamecocks maintained their momentum in the second, stretching their advantage to 18 points by halftime, highlighted by Bree Hall’s three-pointer.

In the third quarter, South Carolina erased any doubt with a blistering 20-3 run over seven minutes. Five players scored in double figures for the first time this season, including senior Te-Hina Paopao, who tied her season high with three three-pointers, and newcomers Joyce Edwards and Maryam Dauda, who added 10 points each.

Fulwiley shined with a season-high 23 points, fueled by four three-pointers, while freshman Maddy McDaniel made her debut and scored her first career points late in the fourth quarter. The South Carolina women’s relentless depth and rebounding prowess once again proved too much for their opponent, keeping their unbeaten season alive at 3-0.

Dawn Staley and the South Carolina Gamecocks are set to welcome HBCU Coppin State to Colonial Life Arena for their much-anticipated home opener, where they’ll unveil the banner celebrating last season’s 2024 National Championship. This marks an important night for Staley’s team as they extend their remarkable 40-game win streak, joining an elite group of NCAA programs with multiple streaks of such length.

Staley told the local media that Coppin State moved some things around to play them, and that they will visit the Baltimore HBCU next season. Coppin State hosted LSU last season.

South Carolina is coming off an impressive win over #9 NC State, showcasing their depth and balance. South Carolina’s roster depth is evident with 12 players averaging over 16 minutes per game, led by Preseason All-SEC First-Team selection Te-Hina Paopao, who scored a Gamecock career-high of 23 points in Sunday’s matchup. With players like MiLaysia Fulwiley and Raven Johnson contributing significantly on both ends of the court, Staley’s squad continues to emphasize team dynamics and versatility.

Dawn Staley South Carolina, HBCU

For Dawn Staley, the matchup against Coppin State isn’t just a chance to extend South Carolina’s win streak; it’s a moment to underscore her commitment to honoring HBCUs within the sport. Having been a passionate advocate for inclusivity in basketball, Staley views games like this as opportunities to bring visibility to HBCU programs and highlight their rich legacies.

Coppin State represents an exciting challenge, as the Gamecocks have never previously faced the Eagles in women’s basketball. But with South Carolina’s history of dominating MEAC opponents and a 39-9 record in home openers, the odds lean heavily in their favor. Nonetheless, this game is set to be memorable, not only for the championship banner but also for the message it sends: Staley’s dedication to fostering connections within college basketball, particularly between powerhouse programs and HBCUs, continues to leave a lasting impact both on and off the court.

BALTIMORE – Coppin State head baseball coach Sherman Reed has announced that Wayne Franklin, a former MLB pitcher for seven seasons, has been hired as the pitching coach at the Baltimore HBCU.

“We were fortunate to land a pitching coach of the caliber of Coach Franklin,” said Reed who is entering his 15th season at the helm of the CSU program. “The guys play this game in hopes of reaching the Big Leagues someday. Under the tutelage of a former Major League Baseball pitcher, the guys are getting instruction at the highest end. They have done a great job putting on the breaks of the past and buying into Coach Franklin’s pitching philosophy. I am excited to see what the future holds for our young and talented pitching staff.”

In Franklin’s own opinion, his entire Major League career has prepared him for this moment – to come back to his home state of Maryland as a college coach, and it will be at an HBCU for the upcoming season.

Born in Wilmington, Del., yet raised in North East, Maryland, Franklin was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 1996 MLB Draft out of the University of Maryland and was picked up by the Houston Astros in the 1999 Rule Five Draft. Franklin made his big league debut with the Astros in 2000, forcing Hall of Famer Ken Griffey, Jr., the first batter he faced, to ground out.

Franklin spent his first three seasons with the Astros as a reliever before the Milwaukee Brewers converted him into a starter. He ended the 2002 season with a 2-1 record while recording a 2.62 ERA for the Brewers before winning ten games the following season, striking out a career-high 116 batters.

HBCU MLB

Over his professional career in Major League Baseball, Franklin was a teammate of several all-time great hitters, including Barry Bonds, Alex Rodriguez, Derek Jeter, Jeff Bagwell, Chipper Jones, Andruw Jones, Jason Giambi, Robinson Cano, Bernie Williams, Craig Biggio and Jorge Posada, and on the same pitching staffs as Mariano Rivera, Randy Johnson, Mike Mussina, John Smoltz, Tim Hudson, Kevin Brown and Billy Wagner.

A person whom Wayne attributes greatly to his knowledge of baseball is the late author and sports psychologist, H.A. Dorfman. Franklin says that Dorfman’s contributions to the mental game of baseball will never be quantified.

Following his MLB career, Franklin played three years at the International and Independent League levels before starting his collegiate coaching career at San Francisco State, then as the manager of the San Diego Jets, a Collegiate summer league team in 2019. That summer, he led the Jets to a League Championship. In 2021, he managed the Lake Mills 94’s of the Dairyland Collegiate League, losing in the league championship.

Franklin has also spent time in recent years as a pitching coach at Menlo College and Holy Names University.

The men’s basketball series between North Carolina A&T and Wake Forest is notable for its regional significance. Wake Forest has traditionally been the stronger team, with a series lead, but North Carolina A&T has had moments of competitiveness. The series is part of a broader sports competition, and games are often held at Wake Forest’s Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum. The most recent matchups include a game on November 20, 2021, where Wake Forest won 87-63. Both teams have rich basketball traditions, with Wake Forest producing several NBA players and North Carolina A&T being a prominent HBCU program with multiple NCAA tournament appearances.

The two programs will meet on the football field in August.

Wake Forest and Coppin State have met just once, with Wake Forest winning 69-52 back in February 1989.

Over the past three seasons, dating back to 2021-22, Wake Forest has pieced a 26-7 record versus non-conference opponents through regular-season play. Additionally, the Deacs have gone 28-1 at home against such teams dating back to December 2018.

The 2023-24 season saw the team enjoy a nine-game winning streak from Nov. 24 to Jan. 6 through mainly non-conference competition, in addition to two Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) contests — its best stretch since 2008-09 when the Deacs won 16 consecutive games.

They will square off on Feb. 27 at Lantz Arena.

The Louisiana State University traveled to Baltimore to defeat HBCU Coppin State University in an 80-48 lopsided victory. Although the game did not go in favor of Coppin State, LSU coach Kim Mulkey spoke about the impact of the game on Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

After the reigning national champions won their 12th straight game in front of Coppin’s first sold-out crowd of the season, Kim Mulkey acknowledged that was mostly due to the homecoming of Angel Reese. The crowd may have shown up to see Reese, but the bigger picture is how this game could lead to more support for HBCU women’s basketball.

“I would probably say the majority of people out there came to see Angel Reese and LSU because a lot of them won’t ever come back probably, unless their child or relative is playing. Maybe tonight they gain some fans and they’ll come back and go ‘Wow, that was a lot of fun.’ Maybe there’s some little girl out there that lives around here and Coppin State is where she’ll go to school and play ball someday,” Mulkey said.

This was the first time that a reigning national champion had played a true road game at an HBCU in over ten years. 4,100 packed into the Physical Education Complex to see the rare matchup. Coppin State saw 3,552 in attendance during their last home game against the University of North Florida. Outside of their past two home games, Coppin State has not had over 600 people in attendance. The sold-out crowd gave exposure to Coppin State and possibly showed fans a team that they could support that’s in their backyard.

Angel Reese scored 26 points while Flau’jae Johnson scored 18 points and Aneesah Morrow posted a double-double of 13 points and 13 rebounds. Coppin State’s Tiffany Hammond showed up and made seven three-pointers to score 21 points. Now that many people have seen Hammond’s performance against the seventh nationally ranked team in the country, they could return to more Coppin State games this season.

Kim Mulkey is no stranger to playing and supporting HBCUs. LSU has played games with Texas Southern, Alcorn State, Mississippi Valley State, and Langston University. Coppin State was her first game against a MEAC opponent.

hbcu

“You gotta remember, where I’m from, it’s SWAC. So when I decided that we were going to play this game, I quickly started asking my coaches ‘Who’s in this league?’ And while I’ve heard of everybody in this league, we don’t hear a lot from this league because you got all the SWAC schools, I mean you got Southern right there in Baton Rouge. They did it up right tonight. Everything was just wonderful.”

Mulkey has not faced Southern while she has been at LSU. She explained an idea that she’d had if she had the opportunity to schedule a game versus Southern.

“I’ve always wanted to go play on our football field at LSU and invite Southern to play us and give them the proceeds from the sellout and let them use that for NIL money,”

hbcu

The idea is a creative way to support an HBCU by contributing to their NIL, which is essential in recruiting athletes in today’s college sports.

More opportunities to support will go a long way to support HBCU women’s basketball. Mulkey is not the first or last coach of a top-ranked program to play HBCUs, but attracting a packed crowd to an HBCU only does positive things.

“I knew it would be a great crowd because I was told that it was sold out and it’s good for women’s basketball.”

Star LSU basketball player Angel Reese got the chance to go home on Wednesday as she and her team showed up to Baltimore to face off against Coppin State.

Reese and LSU, the defending national champion, took care of Coppin State 80-48. The Physical Education Complex had 4,100 fans in attendance for the game.

Angel Reese, who started her career at nearby Maryland, put on a show with 25 points, six rebounds, and five steals.

After the game, Reese answered questions from a room full of reporters. Here’s what she had to say:

“A lot of people came out and I know they were supporting Coppin, but being able to come into a historically black college –  my aunt went here, my cousin went here – so coming back here and doing a lot for this community and then being able to see opportunity where they can be a lot of little girls knowing they can have this opportunity was something that was important to me.”

Angel Reese on her impact Impact on young girls

“I’m at a point where I have stretched a lot of these little girls minds and little boys minds where they know that they can be in this position one day. And me being able to be a leader and being able to be somebody that they look up to is something that I’ve kind of embraced. And being from Baltimore, like you guys know, I mean, I know I have a great representation not just in Baltimore, but in the world. So coming back here, I love it. This is my home. First, I’m the Baltimore Barbie before I’m the Bayou Barbie.”

Playing at Coppin State

“Walking in here felt completely different than the first time coming here. Actually, in high school I never played here. So my sophomore year I remember the first time I came here, there weren’t that many fans here, but then coming into the night, just being able to see my impact and being able to see how much so much has changed and understanding my impact in this world. Baltimore has meant everything to me.”

Playing at an HBCU

“I mean, honestly, I would have loved to go to a HBCU. Having the resources and opportunities, they don’t. They’re not the same, of course, but one day being able to give back to a community like this and being able to…we came here, we had to pay them to play us. So being able to do that, of course, I mean, I remember my experience playing against Poly (High School) at Morgan was just like this and being able to have the whole city coming out and so many people coming out tonight and supporting us. It’s just been amazing for me.”

Taking time to herself

“Mental health is the most important thing in being able to put yourself first. That’s something I had to learn. Take some time off social media. I mean, I have 3 million followers on almost all my account, so it’s kind of hard sometimes. And at the end of the day, I’m a human before I’m a student-athlete and being able to just to cope and being able to just to take some time to myself and being able to just focus on me and have the people around me that really, really love me has just always been something that’s really important.”

Getting her flowers as a senior

“I mean, I feel like I got my flowers. When they announced that we were coming here, being able to see so many people come to Baltimore and being able to see so many people come to Coppin and being able to have it sold out and then supporting did not just copy State for LSU. Of course, I had a standing ovation as soon as I walked in the building. So many people love to see me. I don’t get to come home much, but this part was really was special to me and it was my homecoming. So I’m just really happy to be here.”

BALTIMORE — Angel Reese is poised to make a return to her hometown of Baltimore on Wednesday when No. 7 LSU faces HBCU Coppin State at 5 p.m. CT in the PEC Arena in a game that is expected to be a sellout.

The game will stream on ESPN+ with Kyle Borg and Audra Smith. Patrick Wright and Emily Ward will call the action on the LSU Sports Radio Network, 107.3 FM in Baton Rouge.

For Reese, who was named the Sporting News Athlete of the Year earlier Tuesday, it will be her first game back in Maryland in over 660 days.

“Everybody is going to come out,” Reese said. “I don’t know who they are going to be cheering for, Coppin or LSU. Just being able to see so many people in the community and come out to see LSU; I’ve done a lot for Baltimore and me coming back is going to be a big thing.”

Reese, who played high school basketball at St. Frances Academy, wears the pride of being from Baltimore on her sleeve. After she was named the Most Outstanding Player of the 2023 Final Four, Reese threw out the first pitch at a Baltimore Orioles game, was gifted a key to the city of Baltimore by Mayor Brandon Scott, and saw Angel Reese Court unveiled in the city. Her No. 10 jersey is retired at St. Frances Academy where she played in high school.

“Being able to go back home and play in front of (my grandparents) is something that is important to me,” Reese said. “To play in front of a lot of people who have supported me in my career, that’s important to me.”

Wednesday’s game will mark the first time in at least the last 10 years that an HBCU campus will host the reigning Division I nation champion in a true road game. It will be the third straight year for Coppin State to host a high-major team. When Reese was a sophomore at Maryland she played at HBCU Coppin State, notching a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds.

Reese will be in search of her 40th double-double in an LSU uniform on Wednesday. Fellow post Aneesah Morrow just notched her 60th career double-double on Sunday night in LSU’s win over Northwestern State. Reese has 57 double-doubles in her college career.

The Tigers have now won 11 games in a row. Wednesday will be their final game before the holiday break. LSU will have one more non-conference game on December 30 against Jacksonville before beginning SEC play.

Historically, non-conference basketball games have been a struggle for HBCUs, particularly at the Division I level. Often they are matched with PWIs from the top conferences that often result in lopsided defeats.

But not so much now. It’s a new day and HBCUs are finding wins against some of those big named PWIs. These victories are becoming a trend with success in this season and last season’s matchups.

Norfolk State, VCU

Here are some notable games that HBCU squads have won against PWIs this season.

Women’s Basketball

Grambling State 70, Arizona State 67. DeMaya Young scored a season-high of 23 points to hand Arizona State their first loss of the season in the second annual PAC-12/SWAC Legacy Series.

Jackson State 60, St. John’s 56. Daphne White scored 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds.

Arkansas-Pine Bluff 78, Southern Methodist 76. Zaay Green starred in the game with 23 points, nine assists and eight rebounds.

North Carolina A&T 56, Wake Forest 51. Maleia Bracone posted a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds.

North Carolina A&T 56, Liberty University 47. Chaniya Clark recorded a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds.

Coppin State 61, Pittsburgh 56. Laila Lawrence led the way with a double-double of 16 points and 12 rebounds.

HBCU

Men’s Basketball

Southern 85, UNLV 71. Tai’Reon Joseph exploded with 22 points.

Jackson State 73, Missouri 72. Ken Evans Jr. sealed the victory with scoring 20 points

Southern 60, #21 Mississippi State. Tai’Reon Joseph scored a season high of 27 points to upset Mississippi State and knock them out the AP Top 25 Poll.

Norfolk State 63, VCU 60. Jamarii Thomas scored 17 points to secure the win.

Jackson State HBCU

The trend is growing, but HBCUs experienced these types of victories last year during the inaugural PAC-12/SWAC Legacy series. SWAC men’s basketball teams won three of the matchups in the series. Grambling State defeated Colorado, Texas Southern defeated Arizona State and Prairie View A&M defeated Washington State.

The SWAC women’s basketball teams did not have the same success as they were all defeated in their matchups. Jackson State could have increased the SWAC’s odds of winning one of the matchups in the women’s games but they did not participate in last year’s series.

HBCU
2023 SWAC Basketball Tournament – Wednesday, March 8, 2023 – Bartow Arena – Women’s Quarterfinal #2 – Grambling State vs Jackson State

Jackson State women’s basketball has been a powerhouse program in the SWAC since 2021. They are no stranger to taking down PWIs in their road to postseason tournaments. Before defeating St. John’s last month, last season Jackson State won games over Texas Tech and Louisiana to finish the season 21-10 (17-1) and an invitation to the NIT. In the 2021-2022 season, Jackson State defeated Nicholls State and won the SWAC tournament before losing in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to LSU to finish the season 23-7 (18-0).

HBCU basketball is growing and improving every year. As the matchups against big PWIs continue, it should not be a shock to see HBCU victories continue too.

BALTIMORE – Coppin State faces the two teams right behind them in the MEAC standings when it hosts Norfolk State on Friday, November 3 before traveling to Howard on Sunday, November 5. The Eagles swept both teams earlier in the season and are able to clinch its third regular season title in the last four seasons with a win.

LAST TIME OUT
Coppin swept Le Moyne as all 14 healthy players saw action, led by TaKenya Stafford with six kills and six digs. Andrea Tsvetanova recorded 14 assists, five aces and six digs in just two sets while Geraldyn Palacios tallied five kills, three aces and four blocks. The win was the 100th of head coach Tim Walsh‘s tenure at Coppin.

20 FOR 20
In Coppin’s five-set win over MD Eastern Shore on Sept. 24, TaKenya Stafford, who wears #20, recorded a career-high 21 kills while hitting .250. It was the second 20+ kill match of her career as she tallied 20 kills at Belmont as a member of Eastern Illinois on Oct. 15, 2021. She’s the first CSU player to record 20 kills since Miajavon Coleman had 20 against NC Central on Sept. 25, 2022.

Stafford even more recently became just the 2nd CSU player to record 20+ kills and 20+ digs in the same match (Miajavon Coleman) as she recorded career-highs of 27 kills and 23 digs in a 5-set win at NC Central.

STUFFED AT THE NET
Laila Ibrahim matched a school-record with 11 blocks in a 4-set victory over Portland on Sept. 16. This propelled her to earning All-Tournament Team honors at the UNLV Rebel Challenge and helped her receive MEAC Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 18. Her 11 blocks are tied for the 6th-most in the NCAA this season in a 4-set match.

The Eagles also broke a school-record with 17.0 total blocks in the win over the Pilots. This ranks tied for 11th in the NCAA during a 4-set match this season.

After hitting .300 and recording seven kills in the fourth set alone, Casel came back with nine more kills on .375 swinging in a sweep at UMES. For the weekend, Casel recorded 27 kills and four blocks on .321 swinging. This year, Ashley Roman is a likely candidate for the award.  While her athletic prowess is well-documented, she has also been a standout in the classroom with over a 3.8 GPA in Biology, started a Latinx club on Coppin State’s campus while serving on the MEAC’s Hispanic and Latinx Heritage committee, and has organized several food and supply drives for hurricane and earthquake victims in her native Puerto Rico.

LAILA’S COLD AS ‘I’CE

Ibrahim’s 12 kills and 13 attempts were both career highs, as were her five blocks against the Quakers. Ibrahim’s hitting percentage was the best in the NCAA at the time this season and was the highest in the NCAA since Lauren Matthews of Western Kentucky hit .929 with 13 kills on 14 swings against FIU on Oct. 1, 2021.

5 SEASONS OF MEAC SUCCESS

Since 2018, the Eagles have the second-best record in the league which included the program’s first regular season title & winning season in the Spring 2020 campaign. From 2005 to 2017, Coppin won just 45 conference games.

NON-CONFERENCE PROWESS
Coppin has won a school-record 11 non-conference games this season, eclipsing the nine non-conference wins they had last season. CSU still has American and Le Moyne on the schedule this year. Among the highlights last year was a Liberty University Invitational Championship where the Eagles defeated Liberty, Radford and Eastern Michigan. CSU also defeated a trio of SWAC schools at the ISTAP HBCU Challenge in Alabama, as well as George Washington, North Carolina A&T and Bethune-Cookman.

TK 3-FOR-3
TaKenya Stafford was impressive in her CSU debut, recording three double-doubles in as many matches at Auburn’s War Eagle Invitational. In the opener against McNeese, Stafford hit .321 with a team-high 15 kills along with 14 digs. She followed up with ten kills and 11 digs against a tough Auburn squad before concluding the weekend with a team-high 12 kills and ten digs. Stafford had three double-doubles as a freshman at Eastern Illinois in 2021.

GIGI A SILENT KILLER
While Ammaarah Williams and TaKenya Stafford got much of the hype during the opening weekend at Auburn, Geraldyn Palacios also had an impressive week in the middle. Hitting a team-high .373 with 24 kills in three matches, Palacios recorded a career-high 11 kills on 25 swings to hit .360 against McNeese.  She hit an identical .385 against Auburn and Jacksonville State with a combined 13 kills and seven blocks in the two matches. Palacios has gone on to record ten kills in four other matches (Howard, at NCCU, vs. Portland, UMES).  She now ranks 3rd in the MEAC in hitting and 7th in blocks.

A FEW FIRSTS AT LIBERO VS DSU
Freshman Coco Figueroa made her first career appearance and start at libero against Delaware State on October 20. Redshirt senior Ashley Roman did not play in that first set, which was the first in her career that she did not start or appear in.

‘A’ TEAM WINS WEEKLY AWARDS
Ashley RomanAndrea Tsvetanova and Ammaarah Williams all received MEAC Weekly awards on Sept. 4 with Williams earning Player of the Week, Roman was Defensive Player of the Week and Tsvetanova as Setter of the Week.

WELCOME BACK P
Paola Caten returns from injury this season as one of the most all-around players in school-history. An All-Rookie selection in 2019, she made 2nd Team in the Spring 2021 season and first team in Fall 2021. She enters this year just outside Coppin’s top ten in kills and digs while ranking eighth in both aces and points. She owns a school-record with 71 attacks in a single match as she recorded a career-high 28 kills along with 16 digs for 30.5 points in a 5-set loss at NC Central. NCCU was led by current CSU player Ammaarah Williams with 19 kills.

OUT OF HER SHADOW
For the first time in her collegiate career, Ahzhi Coleman will not have her sister Miajavon Coleman as a team-mate.  While the older Coleman proved to be one of the top players in MEAC history, Ahzhi has made her own legacy at Coppin.  After being an All-Rookie Team selection in 2021 with a team-high 57 blocks to go with 138 kills, she upped her production to 162 kills and 71 blocks while hitting .250.  In just two seasons, she is nearing CSU’s top ten in blocks with 134 in her career.

BREAKOUT SOPHOMORE YEAR
After seeing limited time as a freshman, Hope Casel stepped up in a big way during the 2022 season. Casel nearly tripled her kills from her freshman season and finished fourth on the team with 11 on the season. She also doubled her blocks from the previous season with 36 on the season.

TK OFFERS HOLLYWOOD VIBES
TaKenya Stafford, a transfer from Eastern Illinois, brings a different kind of vibe to the Eagles this season and is expected to be an immediate starter at the pin. Hailing from Los Angeles, TK recorded 76 kills with 177 digs in 15 matches for the Panthers in 2021. Recording 14 kills with 13 digs in her collegiate debut vs. Bellarmine, she had back to-back double-doubles at Belmont later in the season (20k/14d & 14k/10d). She appeared in just two matches last season.

PRESEASON PROGNOSTICS
Coppin received nine of 16 first-place votes and finished in a tie for first with Howard in the MEAC Preseason Poll. Ashley RomanAndrea Tsvetanova and Ammaarah Williamswere named to the Preseason All-MEAC Team.

2022 RECAP
Coppin won the MEAC Regular Season Championship and advanced to the conference championship game before falling to #3 seed and host Delaware State. The Eagles won a school-record 23 matches and earned their first-ever postseason bid where they dropped a five-heartbreaker at Wake Forest in the NIVC First Round.

BALTIMORE — Coppin State University named Larry Stewart (’06) as the new Head Men’s Basketball Coach. Stewart returns to his alma mater after spending 14 years as an assistant coach at three of the other Historically Black Colleges and Universities in Maryland. Stewart served as an assistant at Bowie State for six seasons (2009-15) with the last three as associate head coach, Morgan State (2015-19, 2022-23) and Maryland Eastern Shore (2019-21) with one season as associate head coach.

Stewart is widely regarded as one of the greatest players in Coppin State history and is one of two Eagles (Joe Pace) to play in the NBA, where he played five seasons with the Washington Bullets, Vancouver Grizzlies and Seattle Supersonics. He was a two-time MEAC Player of the Year, earning the honor in back-to-back seasons (1990, 1991), and was a three-time All-Conference selection (1989, 1990, 1991). After going undrafted, Stewart averaged 10.4 points and 5.9 rebounds in his 1991-92 rookie season with the Bullets and became the first undrafted player in league history to make an NBA All-Rookie Team.

“Larry Stewart’s track record as a player and coach will be instrumental in recruiting the right players for our program and building a culture of excellence on and off the court,” said Coppin State University President Anthony L. Jenkins. “I look forward to Coach Stewart and Athletic Director Derek Carter rebuilding our men’s basketball program in a way that fosters the legacy we have been known for. I believe seeing Coach Stewart at the helm will ignite excitement across Eagle Nation.”

“It is an exciting time to welcome Larry back to his alma mater and continue the legacy of success he had as a student-athlete at Coppin,” said Carter. “From his time as a student-athlete, to playing in the NBA and overseas, Larry has proven himself as a legend on the court, and at Coppin. He has earned the respect from his peers during his many years as an assistant coach at other institutions and I look forward to his continued success as our men’s basketball head coach.”

Leading Coppin to its first MEAC Championship and NCAA Tournament appearance in 1990, Stewart and the Eagles earned a 15-seed before falling to Syracuse in the first round, where he outscored Derrick Coleman, the first overall selection of that year’s NBA Draft. In the following season, Stewart averaged 23.9 points and 13.4 rebounds, both of which are school records, and led Coppin to the NIT.

Stewart ranks third all-time in scoring at Coppin and is the only player in program history to score at least 1,000 points (1,824) and grab 1,000 rebounds (1,052), a school record.  Stewart is also the all-time leader in field goal percentage (64.6) and ranks second in field goals (676), free throws (471) and blocks (149). As the MEAC celebrated its 50thanniversary in 2021, Stewart was named to the conference’s All-Time Team.

“I’m thankful and blessed and appreciate the opportunity that has been presented to me,” said Stewart. “It’s a dream job, its where I grew up and I look forward to getting started teaching and growing young men.”

His Coppin State jersey (42) was retired at a ceremony in 1993 and hangs in the rafters of PEC Arena, and he has been inducted into both the Coppin State and MEAC Halls of Fame (2005).

From 1997 to 2008, Stewart played overseas in Spain, Turkey, Greece and France before starting his coaching career as an assistant coach at Bowie State in 2009. In his six seasons at BSU, the Bulldogs won 113 games, went to a pair of NCAA Tournaments (2011, 2013), won the 2013 CIAA Tournament and saw Cameron Knox win the 2015 CIAA Player of the Year award.

Following his tenure at Bowie State, Stewart spent four seasons in his first stint at Morgan State, under head coach Todd Bozeman.  With Stewart on the sideline, Tiwian Kendley and Phillip Carr combined to receive three First Team All-MEAC awards, with Carr being named the 2017 Defensive Player of the Year, and both went on to play professionally.

He returned to the Bears’ bench for the 2022-23 campaign as an assistant after two seasons at Maryland Eastern Shore, which included the canceled 2020-21 docket where he was the Hawks’ associate head coach under Jason Crafton.

A Philadelphia native, Coach Stewart is the son of Lois and Larry Stewart Sr., and has three siblings, Latanya, Stephen and Lynard. Stephen is also a graduate of Coppin State, who was selected as the MEAC Player of the Year in 1994 and 1995, and an inductee into the Coppin State and MEAC Halls of Fame.

Coach Stewart resides in Baltimore County with his wife, Toi, daughters Lexis, Laryn, and son, Tai.

The Juan Dixon Era of Coppin State basketball appears to be over.

Coppin State has decided to part ways with Dixon, according to Stadium’s Jeff Goodman.

Dixon, a former All-American at Maryland and longtime NBA player, went 51-131 in six seasons at the helm of the Baltimore-based program. His team went 9-23 during the 2022-2023 season.

Juan Dixon took over the program in 2017-2018, winning five, eight and 11 games over his first three seasons at the helm. That 11 win mark during the 2019-2020 would represent the highest single season win total for Dixon at the program.

Juan Dixon, Coppin State
Juan Dixon walks off the court after his team’s loss in the 2023 MEAC Tournament quarterfinals.

Ironically, the COVID-19 impacted 2020-2021 campaign was more successful despite the fact that Coppin State only one nine games. CSU went 8-4 in the MEAC and tied for the MEAC North Division title that season (the division model was only for one year) and advanced to the MEAC Tournament semifinals where it fell to crosstown rival Morgan State.

The following season Coppin State went 9-23, but managed to make it to the MEAC title game. It would fall short of a Cinderella NCAA Tournament bid, however, losing to Norfolk State.

Beyond his record, Dixon has faced scrutiny for his handling of a situation in which one of his former players accused a former member of his staff of sexually extorting him earlier in his tenure.

Now Coppin State will look to find a new head coach. Coppin State generates the lowest amount of revenue in all of Division I – $2.71 million in 2021 according to USA Today. Its last winning season came in 2010-2011 when it went 16-14 under legendary head coach Ronald “Fang” Mitchell.

There was a lot of hope when Dixon took over the program back in 2017, and there were a few moments which it looked like the program was ready to turn the corner. But it never happened and now Coppin State will have to see how to get the most bang for its precious dollars for its flagship program.

University of Maryland legend Juan Dixon is coming back to College Park, but this time as the head coach of Coppin State University.

Maryland released its 2022-2023 non-conference schedule and it features Coppin State for the first time since 1989.

That 1989 meeting resulted in a win for Coppin State, which was just a few years into its stint as a Division I program. Then-head coach Ronald “Fang” Mitchell declared that Maryland would never schedule Coppin State again. And he was right – until now.

“We’re not talking about fairness so much as we are talking about money,” Mitchell told the Baltimore Sun. “The big schools are in control and the at-large spaces are reserved for them. They figure, ‘let the little people fight it out.”

Coppin State finished 9-23 last season, but nearly made it to the NCAA Tournament after making the MEAC Championship Game last spring. It felt to Norfolk State, but ended the season on a relatively high note. Since the end of the season, however, it has lost several key players from last year’s squad, although leading scorer Nendah Tarke is slated to come back.

Nendah Tarke Coppin State

This will be the first time Juan Dixon has faced Maryland as a visitor. The Baltimore native had a spectacular career at Maryland from 1998 through 2002. A three-time, first-team All-ACC selection, Dixon had a memorable senior season where he won ACC Player of The Year and was a consensus first-team All-American in 2002. He would go on to lead Maryland to its only NCAA title in school history that season before being picked by the Washington Wizards in the NBA Draft.

When his NBA career was finished, Juan Dixon returned to Maryland as an assistant coach. He then spent one season coaching at District of Columbia before being hired at Coppin State. He’s currently 42-108 overall at Coppin State, which has one of the smallest budgets in Division I basketball.

The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) has named Cathryn Lane from Coppin State University as the 2022 Woman of the Year, the conference office announced.

The award, selected annually by the MEAC Senior Woman Administrators, celebrates the achievements of senior female student-athletes who have excelled in academics, athletics, service and leadership. This is the second-straight year that a CSU student-athlete received the MEAC’s Woman of the Year award with former volleyball player Salma Gonzalez taking the honor in 2021.

“It is my honor to congratulate Cathryn Lane as the first MEAC Woman of the Year during my tenure as commissioner,” MEAC Commissioner Sonja Stills said. “Cathryn has had a spectacular career, not just on the track, but also in the classroom and the community. She is the embodiment of the term ‘student-athlete,’ and I want to thank Coppin State’s coaches, athletics staff and academic support personnel, as well as Cathryn’s family, for their part in her success.”

The 2021-22 campaign saw Lane earn All-Region honors with the 4×400-meter relay team, which competed in the NCAA East Preliminary and ran a season-best 3:38.73. She also earned Second Team All-MEAC honors this past season in the outdoor 4×100-meter relay and the indoor 4×400-meter relay — and during the MEAC Indoor Championships, she set personal bests in the 200 and 400 meters.

Lane helped the Eagles win gold in the 4×400-meter relay this past April in the Norfolk State Invitational, running a 3:39.00 (which was a season best prior to the NCAA East Preliminary race).

In February 2020, Lane earned Third Team All-MEAC honors in the indoor 4×400-meter relay.

A native of Baltimore, Md., Lane earned a Bachelor of Science degree, graduating with a 3.59 GPA. In 2019, she was a member of the Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society, and she was a member of the Chi Alpha Sigma honor society in 2020. 2021 saw Lane named a Featherstone Scholar with the William and Lanea Foundation.
