Delaware State University recently presented a three-part proposal requesting the state provide $125 million over several years to help the HBCU improve its athletic facilities.

DSU president Tony Allen believes the state’s aid will increase the visibility and competitive spirit of the university’s athletics despite the Donald Trump administration’s sweeping efforts across the nation to slash federal education programs. Allen also said today’s college athletics landscape plays a significant role in raising a university’s profile.

“It’s a new era for DSU Athletics,” Allen said, per WDEL 1150AM in Wilmington, Delaware. “People ask me all the time ‘why should we be focused on athletics?’ It’s because it’s the front porch of the university.”

Marquee Coaches

When Allen suggested his plan in the Capital Improvement Committee Budget hearing, it called for a university bond bill for $25 million this year to build an indoor field house as the first of the three-way plan. The facility would include offices for coaches, football locker rooms and a 50-yard turf field with hopes of helping DSU recruit better players to its programs after the university made marquee coaching hires in acquiring former NFL wide receiver DeSean Jackson — the Hornets football coach — and former three-year outfielder MLB Pedro Swann, who serves as baseball coach at the HBCU.

While Jackson — who was hired by DSU on Dec. 27 — has recruited solid players, the longtime Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver said the recruiting process has been difficult due to the team’s lacking facility infrastructure.

“It’s kind of shaming to be able to be in a position where you’re at a Division I school and I can’t brag about our facilities,” Jackson said, per WDEL.

Delaware State University plans to construct the field house using the $25 million in bond bill money as well as through other donations to the university. The second phase of the plan seeks to renovate Alumni Stadium and the DSU Downtown/Wesley athletic facilities. The university’s satellite branch in downtown Dover plans to request $10 million in state aid for the renovations, according to WDEL.

Currently, the Hornets play their baseball games at Bob Reed Field. DSU previously hosted its games at its baseball complex. However, the Hornets elected to move away from playing games at their complex to hold games at Wesley — former home of Division III Wesley College that is now DSU Downtown and allowing the HBCU to build a new agriculture building where its complex existed.

Swann, who is in his first season at DSU, said the HBCU baseball field is “way below standards.”

“Our kids work hard every day trying to maintain the field and make the best of what we have,” Swann said, per WDEL. “It’s disheartening every time we go on the road and just see how much better the facility can be when we play amongst our peers.”

The final phase of the proposal includes a state-of-the-art convocation center, combining an indoor arena and conference space in one venue, similar to what is in place inside the Bob Carpenter Center at the University of Delaware. However, if approved, the third phase would not begin until 2027 at the earliest.

DOGE Delay

While several of the state’s lawmakers voiced that DSU has been abandoned and that Dover needs better facilities to become a sports town, state Rep. Debra Heffernan (D-Bellefonte) — the bond committee’s vice chair — said the timing of DSU’s plan is a “year or two” behind due to the effects of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

“I caution that our financial landscape for Bond (Bill) has, at least at this point, does not look as promising as it had for a couple of years previously,” Heffernan said, per WDEL. “So that’s unfortunate that the [DSU] request doesn’t come at a time when we have extra money to invest in these excellent projects.”

Budget restraints led Delaware Gov. Matt Mayer to decrease his funding for DSU’s capital improvements from $20 million—the initial amount under former Gov. John Carey—to $14 million.

Even though the bond committee concluded its budget hearings this week, the committee plans to settle on which programs will receive money before June 30.

Delaware State football is on a mission. Under new head coach DeSean Jackson, the Hornets are trying to build a program that can compete at the highest level. But building something great doesn’t happen overnight, and former NFL star, Hugh Douglas, made sure the players understood what it takes for success in HBCU football.

During a recent practice, Douglas, a Central State University legend and former first-round NFL draft pick, spoke to the Hornets about the importance of unity and discipline. His message was simple but powerful: “Rome wasn’t built in a day.”

Douglas talked about his journey from a small Division II HBCU to becoming an NFL Pro Bowler. He explained that it all started with building a strong foundation and paying attention to the little things. He stressed that Delaware State’s players have a unique opportunity because they have good coaches with NFL experience guiding them.

Words from a pro

“It’s like building a house,” Douglas told the team. “You start with the foundation. This is the foundation. And then you build from there.”

Douglas didn’t hold back about what he saw during practice. He noticed players yelling and pointing fingers when things went wrong. That, he said, was not the way to grow. Instead, he urged them to pick each other up, pat each other on the back, and get ready for the next play.

“You all are brothers. Every dude you see out here right now, you’re gonna walk with them for the rest of your life,” he said. “Pick each other up, man. If you don’t hear nothing else I say today, listen to that.”

Douglas made sure to emphasize that success doesn’t come from shortcuts. “You can’t cut corners and expect to be great,” he added. “The NFL is watching, and they want to see players who are disciplined, committed, and willing to put in the work.”

He also reminded the Hornets about the importance of staying focused on the big picture. “This is just the beginning,” he said. “You’ve got good coaches, you’ve got talent, and you’ve got a chance to be special. But it starts with the details.”

Douglas’s speech wasn’t just motivational—it was a blueprint for success. His journey from Division II HBCU Central State to the NFL showed Delaware State’s players that their dreams are possible if they work hard and stay disciplined. And with DeSean Jackson at the helm, the Hornets are putting in the work to lay a solid foundation.

The team still has a long way to go, but the message was clear: Building something special starts with unity and discipline. If the Hornets can master that, the sky’s the limit.

Delaware State University’s football program is getting a fresh start under new head coach DeSean Jackson. With new energy, accountability, and a determination to build something special, Jackson and the Hornets are ready to make their mark on HBCU football. Showing fans and players that he means business.

The practice was loud and intense, with coaches and players fully locked in. It was the kind of energy that Delaware State football hasn’t seen in a long time. Jackson, known for his electrifying playmaking ability during his NFL career, is now trying to transfer that to the Hornets’ football program.

Culture is changing

“I like the energy so far. You can see a lot of guys that are hungry for change, and the culture is changing,” Jackson said. “It’s just breaking old habits. A lot of guys are used to it being a certain way in past years. I don’t continue to try to talk about the past, but we have to address the elephant in the room. Guys are holding themselves accountable. They’re being asked to do things they’ve never done before.”

DeSean Jackson is fully embracing his new role in HBCU football, even if the transition from player to coach comes with challenges. He acknowledges that one of the biggest challenges is just getting used to everything involved in coaching.

“The biggest challenge I think for me is just getting acclimated with everything… Just not letting it be overwhelming.” Jackson seems determined to take things one step at a time, learning as he goes and keeping his passion for the game alive. “I wake up every day, and I love it, I enjoy it, I never thought being a player and playing all these years that I would be a head coach. But, you know, so far so good. I’m waking up rejuvenated and just giving back to these young men.”

The first open practice featured some explosive moments, particularly from HBCU transfer Kobe Boykin, out of Jackson State, and returning player Marqui Gillis. Boykin and Gillis both showed flashes of their potential. Jackson praised their efforts, saying, “Kobe Boykin showed up and showed out. Marqui Gillis is doing a great job. We’ve got talent here to work with.”

Speed and unpredictability

Jackson’s offensive philosophy, guided by offensive coordinator Nemo Washington, is built around speed and unpredictability. “He’s going to catch a lot of defenses off guard. I think we’ll score a lot of points; we’ll have a lot of yards. The biggest thing is keeping defenses off guard,” Jackson said.

One interesting twist during the practice was the fact that players were practicing without numbers on their jerseys. That made it difficult to identify players, but the energy and effort were unmistakable.

Earlier in the week, the Delaware State team also heard from motivational speaker Inky Johnson and NFL star Hugh Douglas before practice. Johnson is known for his powerful messages of perseverance and leadership. Hugh Douglas, a Central State University legend and former Philadelphia Eagle, brought his own words of encouragement to the team as a former HBCU player himself.

HBCU DeSean Jackson Delaware State

Jackson’s commitment to building a strong team culture is clear. He understands that discipline and passion must go hand in hand. “Allowing the players to be their self… You gotta manage them as well too because they’re young men. So, at times they get out of hand, but you like the passion.” His approach encourages players to be themselves while maintaining control and accountability.

While DeSean Jackson acknowledges there is still a lot of work to be done, he remains optimistic about the future. “Today was the first day we moved in the right direction. Every day you’re going to build, but I think today we really took a step. The offense made some big plays, but defensively, we still have work to do.”

NORFOLK, VA – The MEAC Tournament delivered an emotional thriller as Perry Smith Jr. led the charge for ninth-seeded North Carolina Central University (NCCU), helping the HBCU to a 79-77 upset victory over eighth-seeded Delaware State at Scope Arena.

The dramatic finish came down to the final seconds, with Isaac Parson delivering the decisive layup with just one second remaining, breaking a 77-77 tie. Smith, however, was the driving force behind NCCU’s inspired performance, finishing with 22 points on a near-perfect 7-for-9 shooting night, complemented by an immaculate 8-for-8 from the free throw line.

Yet Smith’s performance transcended basketball, driven by a deeply personal mission. His younger sister is currently battling cancer, an emotional burden that has weighed heavily on him throughout the season.

“My little sis, we’re very close, and my family is very devastated,” Smith said after the game. “This is a very hard time, but basketball has become my escape, my therapy. I play for my sister because I know she’s watching.”

North Carolina Central, HBCU Gameday, MEAC

North Carolina Central head coach LeVelle Moton expressed profound admiration for Smith’s resilience.

“For Perry to just be out here and still on this team says a lot about his character. He’s fighting through things most people can’t imagine. He’s playing for something bigger, and he knows it,” Moton said. “My grandmother told me the two most important days of your life are the day you were born and the day you figure out why. I think Perry has figured out why now.”

In a tightly contested game marked by nine ties and four lead changes, NCCU relied on emotional resilience and critical free throws down the stretch. Delaware State fought valiantly, led by Muneer Newton’s game-high 27 points and Martaz Robinson’s clutch 20-point performance. But NCCU’s determination proved insurmountable.

This victory propels NCCU into the MEAC quarterfinals, it will face second-seeded South Carolina State. Riding a scorching 10-game winning streak, the Orangeburg, SC-based HBCU represents a formidable challenge. Still, Smith and the Eagles remain focused, inspired, and ready to continue their improbable run through the MEAC Tournament.

Delaware State football is entering a new era under head coach DeSean Jackson, and his first major quarterback commitment at the HBCU may offer a clue about his offensive vision. Former Michigan quarterback Anthony Arnou, a 6’2”, 234-pound pro-style passer, is headed to Delaware State, an HBCU competing in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC).

The MEAC has been dominated by dual-threat quarterbacks for years, but Jackson’s decision to recruit a big-bodied pocket passer suggests a pro-style shift for Delaware State. However, Arnou isn’t walking into an empty quarterback room. Marqui Adams, who showed flashes of potential last season, is still in the mix. With the HBCU program looking to improve from a 1-11 season, the battle for QB1 will be one to watch.

A Pro-Style Quarterback in a Dual-Threat League

The MEAC has traditionally seen mobile quarterbacks thrive. Recent stars like Davius Richard (North Carolina Central) and Corey Fields Jr. (South Carolina State) used their legs as much as their arms to lead their teams to championships.

Anthony Arnou, however, is a different type of quarterback.

His college career began at Fresno State, where he redshirted and then transferred to Pasadena City College. He threw for 620 yards and four touchdowns in just four games. His standout performances earned him a spot at Michigan, where he was a Scout Team Offensive Player of the Week, helping prepare the Wolverines’ defense for the Ohio State game.

As Arnou arrives at Delaware State, the big question is: Does Jackson’s quarterback choice signal a major offensive shift for the HBCU program?

Delaware State, HBCU DeSean Jackson
Building a Pro-Style Offense at Delaware State

If DeSean Jackson is committed to a pocket-passing offense, he needs the right offensive line and playmakers to make it work. That’s why Delaware State’s recruiting overhaul is just as important as Arnou’s commitment.

Offensive Line: Protecting the Quarterback

The biggest weakness for Delaware State in 2024 was its offensive line:

 • Allowed 45 sacks (worst in the MEAC)
 • Averaged just 309.3 total yards per game
 • Struggled in red-zone situations

Jackson has made significant upgrades by bringing in bigger, more experienced linemen:

 • Elijha Payne (OL, Arizona, 6’7”) – FBS experience at left tackle.
 • Rodney Leaks (OL, Houston Christian, 6’5”) – Strong interior lineman.
 • Keyshawn Ross Jr. (OL, Huguenot HS, 6’3”) – Promising high school recruit.
 • Blake Brown (OL, East St. Louis HS, 6’4”) – Adds much-needed depth.

With these additions, Delaware State’s offensive line should improve—an essential factor for a pro-style quarterback like Arnou to succeed.

Finding a New Lead Running Back

The Hornets must replace Jaden Sutton, who was the engine of Delaware State’s offense last season, rushing for 1,220 yards and 12 touchdowns. Jackson brought in Kobe Boykin (Jackson State transfer) and will also look to Marquis Gillis (2022 MEAC Rookie of the Year) to handle the rushing attack.

If Boykin and Gillis provide a strong backfield, it will take pressure off Arnou and open up the passing game.

Revamping the Wide Receiver Room

For Delaware State’s passing offense to improve, Arnou will need playmakers at wide receiver. Jackson has already made key additions:

 • Antonio Gates Jr. (WR, Michigan State, 6’2”) – FBS talent with size and hands.
 • Jadyn Robinson (WR, Junipero Serra HS) – The highest-rated recruit in Delaware State football history.
 • Ezekiel Orozco (WR, Long Beach Poly HS) – A speedster who adds a much-needed deep threat.

With these additions, Delaware State’s passing attack has a chance to be far more explosive in 2025.

Is DeSean Jackson Changing Delaware State’s Football Identity?

Delaware State has struggled offensively for years, relying on a run-heavy system and mobile quarterbacks. But Jackson’s recruiting moves, particularly landing a pro-style quarterback like Arnou, suggest a more balanced, vertical passing attack.

However, two key factors will determine whether this shift is successful:

 1. Can the offensive line give Arnou the time he needs to operate in the pocket?
 2. Will the new receivers and running backs provide the offensive firepower to complement a passing attack?

With five months until kickoff, Jackson’s first recruiting class at Delaware State is shaping up to be one of the best in HBCU football this offseason.

And it may all start with Anthony Arnou.

When Stan Waterman took over as head coach of Delaware State University men’s basketball in 2021, the program was in need of revival. The Hornets, a proud HBCU basketball program, had once been a dominant force in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), winning the 2005 MEAC Championship and making their first and only NCAA Tournament appearance. However, years of struggles followed, and the program was searching for a new leader to restore its winning tradition. Enter Stan Waterman, a Delaware basketball icon whose leadership has transformed the Hornets back into contenders.

His efforts have now earned him national recognition, including a nomination for the 2025 Skip Prosser Man of the Year Award, given annually to a coach who wins with integrity. With Delaware State recording its best season in over a decade, Waterman is restoring the program’s pride.

Before taking over at Delaware State, Waterman was already a Delaware basketball legend. A state champion as a player at Howard Career Center, he later built a powerhouse at Sanford School, winning multiple high school state championships. His coaching pedigree extended to USA Basketball, where he guided the junior national team to two gold medals, coaching future NBA stars.

Despite his success, transitioning from high school to Division I coaching at an HBCU was a challenge. His primary goal? Restoring a winning mindset.

“The biggest task for me at Delaware State really was just changing the culture,” Waterman said in his interview with Cobi in an interview with Cobi. “I came in at a time where the program had been struggling. They weren’t winning a whole lot of basketball games, so they weren’t conditioned or used to winning at that point.”

Instead of overhauling the roster, Waterman made a rare decision—he kept all 12 returning players from the previous team.

“Most situations, a new coach comes in, he cleans house, brings in the kind of guys that he wants to play with,” Waterman explained in the interview. “We kept them all and saw them through graduation.”

That first season was a challenge, with just two wins, but Waterman was laying the foundation for future success.

By his second season, Waterman’s impact became evident, with Delaware State tripling its win total. Then, in year three (2023-24), the Hornets fully re-emerged as a force in HBCU basketball:

 • 15 wins – the most in over a decade
 • MEAC Championship Game appearance (first since 2015)
 • National postseason berth (CBI Tournament)
 • Multiple players earning MEAC honors

“We had the lead on Howard with two and a half minutes to go,” Waterman recalled in the interview with Cobi about the MEAC title game. “Unfortunately, it didn’t turn out that way for us… but we’re going to use that as a springboard this season.”

The resurgence of Delaware State basketball is a reminder of its past success. Under former head coach Greg Jackson, the Hornets won three straight MEAC regular-season titles (2005-07) and made two NIT appearances. Waterman is now bringing that championship DNA back.

HBCU Delaware State
Waterman’s Coaching Philosophy: Development & Adaptation

Waterman’s ability to develop players has been key to Delaware State’s turnaround.

“In high school, you might have three really good basketball players and fill the roster with a track star, a baseball player, and just a good athlete,” Waterman said in his interview with Cobi. “At the collegiate level, almost everybody on the roster was the best player on their high school team.”

Under Waterman, several players have become MEAC stars:

 • Robert Smith – MEAC Player of the Week, career-high 34 points vs. Morgan State
 • Martaz Robinson – Preseason All-MEAC First Team, 1500+ career points
 • Kaseem Watson – Emerging scorer and key contributor

With his player-first approach, Waterman has built a resilient and competitive Delaware State team, making it an attractive destination for recruits looking to excel at an HBCU program.

Modern college basketball presents challenges with the transfer portal and NIL. Waterman has had to adjust quickly, as Delaware State has developed talent only to see top players recruited away by larger programs.

“We had the Rookie of the Year last year in the league, another all-league player, and then our sixth man—our top three scorers,” Waterman said in his interview with Cobi. “If they have great seasons at our level, the big boys are going to come in and poach them. And that’s exactly what happened.”

Instead of resisting change, Waterman has embraced the transfer portal, using it to bring in experienced players and maintain Delaware State’s status as a contender in the MEAC.

“That door swings both ways,” he said. “As guys leave, there’s an opportunity to bring guys in.”

Delaware State is no longer rebuilding—it’s competing.

With a strong foundation, Waterman has positioned DSU as a program that can sustain success. The HBCU athletic renaissance has helped bring more attention to Delaware State, and the university is investing in athletics, including plans for a new facility.

“We’re unapologetically HBCU,” Waterman said in his interview with Cobi. “There are a lot of exciting things happening.”

One of Waterman’s biggest goals? Making Memorial Hall one of the toughest places to play in the country.

“We’re five and one at home, playing an exciting brand of basketball,” he said. “Check the schedule and come on down to Memorial Hall and catch a game.”

Stan Waterman’s arrival at Delaware State has reignited the program’s HBCU basketball legacy. With a culture of discipline, player development, and resilience, he has turned the Hornets into MEAC contenders once again.

With a Skip Prosser Award nomination, increased national attention, and a conference title in sight, Delaware State basketball is on the verge of its next great era—one led by a coach who has successfully blended tradition with modern innovation.

Desean Jackson has landed a former Power Four quarterback for his roster to start his first year at Delaware State, an HBCU that competes in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC). to add to his first official recruiting class. Former Michigan quarter Anthony Arnou announced via Twitter “After graduating I will begin a new chapter at Delaware State”.

Arnou started his college career at Fresno State where he didn’t see any playing time his freshman year. His sophomore year he transferred to Pasadena City College, a JUCO, where he was able to see the field and show off his talents. At Pasadena he had a total of 620 passing yards with four touchdowns in only four games. In his first-ever college game, he threw for over 250 yards with three touchdowns. The 6’2″ 234-pound Arnou was a two-star quarterback coming out of high school in Santa Monica, California.

He transferred from Pasadena College after 2022 and landed in Michigan for the 2024 season. In Ann Arbor, he didn’t see any in-game action for the Wolverines but was a valuable practice player. He was named Scout Team Offensive Player of the Week for his role in preparing the defense for the Ohio State game.

Now Arnou will presumably finish his college career at Delaware State, teaming up with Desean Jackson and his initial hot recruiting class.

Our Cobi Simmons gave a detailed breakdown of just how good Jackson’s first recruiting class might be. You can read that article here on HBCU Gameday.

Delaware State University’s football program has added another NFL great to its HBCU football coaching staff. Newly hired head coach DeSean Jackson has appointed Clinton Portis as the team’s running backs coach. A move that will add another layer of excitement to the 2025 Delaware State football season. The announcement was made on the program’s official Instagram account.

About Clinton Portis

Clinton Portis, a Laurel, Mississippi native, made a name for himself during his nine-season NFL career. He began his collegiate career at the University of Miami, where he rushed for 2,523 yards, ranking fourth in the school’s history. Portis was instrumental during one of the most successful eras in the history of “The U,” including a national championship victory.

His professional career started with the Denver Broncos selected him in the second round of the 2002 NFL Draft. Portis’ skills quickly translated to the professional level, surpassing 1,500 rushing yards in each of his first two seasons. In 2004, he was traded to the Washington Redskins, where he continued to be a top running back in the league, averaging 81.2 rushing yards per game over seven seasons. Contributions of which earned him a spot among the “80 Greatest Redskins.”

The professional paths of DeSean Jackson and Clinton Portis have intertwined over the years. Jackson, a dynamic wide receiver, played for the Washington Redskins from 2014 to 2016, overlapping with Portis’s tenure. This shared history in Washington is likely part of the reason that Portis is now in charge of the running game in Jackson’s first season in HBCU football.

Since retiring from the NFL, Clinton Portis has faced some personal and legal challenges. Despite these issues, Portis has remained connected to football, sharing his experiences and insights through various media appearances. His journey underscores the difficulties athletes may face in transitioning to life after the conclusion of their playing careers. Giving Portis a unique insight into life after football that could be life-changing for the HBCU athletes that Portis will mentor.

The addition of Portis to the Delaware State University coaching staff not only enhances the team’s expertise but also underscores Delaware State’s commitment to revitalizing its football program, and by adding another NFL great to the staff, DeSean Jackson’s Del State Hornets should attract more high-level college players looking to learn from notable NFL greats.

Delaware State football is at a crossroads. After a 1-11 (0-5 MEAC) season in 2024, the Hornets were outscored 446 to 212, struggled in the trenches, and lacked offensive firepower. But with new head coach DeSean Jackson at the helm, change is coming. Jackson’s first recruiting class is one of the most promising in Delaware State football history, blending FBS transfers and high-upside high school recruits. But can this group turn DSU into a competitive force in HBCU football?

One of the biggest questions is: Who replaces star running back Jaden Sutton, and can Jackson find the missing pieces to elevate the program?

HBCU DeSean Jackson Delaware State

Replacing Jaden Sutton: Can Kobe Boykin Be the Next Star RB?

The biggest loss for Delaware State heading into 2025 is Jaden Sutton, the team’s most productive offensive weapon last season.

Jaden Sutton’s 2024 Stats:

 • 1,220 rushing yards, 12 TDs, 6.6 yards per carry
 • 70% of the team’s total rushing yards
 • Longest run: 72 yards

With Sutton gone, DeSean Jackson and Delaware State must find a new RB1 to carry the offense. Enter Kobe Boykin, a transfer from Jackson State, who is expected to take over as the lead back.

Why Kobe Boykin Could Be Delaware State’s Next Star:

 • Played in a competitive HBCU football environment at Jackson State.
 • Brings speed, power, and versatility, making him a great fit in Jackson’s system.
 • Will run behind a much-improved offensive line, which should create more opportunities.

Will Marquis Gillis Bounce Back?

 • 2022 MEAC Rookie of the Year but struggled with injuries in 2024.
 • Only played two games last season but has the talent to compete for the top spot.
 • Could form a dynamic 1-2 punch with Boykin if he returns to form.

If Boykin lives up to expectations and Gillis regains his freshman-year form, Delaware State could have one of the most dangerous rushing attacks in HBCU football.

Offensive Line Overhaul: Fixing the Biggest Weakness

2024 Issue: Poor Protection & Blocking

 • 45 sacks allowed (worst in the MEAC).
 • Averaged just 309.3 total yards per game (compared to 432.3 YPG by opponents).
 • Struggled in short-yardage and red-zone situations.

2025 Solution: Bigger, Stronger Linemen

 • Elijha Payne (OL, Arizona, 6’7”) – FBS experience at left tackle.
 • Rodney Leaks (OL, Houston Christian, 6’5”) – Strong interior lineman.
 • Keyshawn Ross Jr. (OL, Huguenot HS, 6’3”) – A promising high school recruit.
 • Blake Brown (OL, East St. Louis HS, 6’4”) – Adds much-needed depth.

With these additions, expect a major improvement in both pass protection and run blocking, allowing Boykin and Gillis to thrive.

Delaware State’s Defensive Line Revamp: Bringing the Pressure

2024 Issue: No Pass Rush, Weak Run Defense

 • Only 7 sacks in 12 games (worst in the MEAC).
 • Opposing quarterbacks threw for 2,911 yards and 26 TDs.

2025 Solution: A More Physical Defensive Front

 • Alexander Cobbs (DE, San Jose State, 6’3”) – FBS transfer with pass-rushing experience.
 • Malik Jacques (DE, Venice HS, 6’5”) – A high-upside athlete who adds size on the edge.
 • Julius Valentine Jr. (DE, Charles H. Flowers HS, 6’4”) – Strong pass rusher with potential to start early.
 • Chris Trumbull (EDGE, Red Lion Christian Academy, 6’4″)Productive homegrown Delaware talent.

These additions should help Delaware State generate pressure and improve its run defense, two critical areas that cost them games in 2024.

Playmakers at Wide Receiver: Can DSU’s Passing Game Take Off?

2024 Issue: Lack of Big Plays at WR

 • No wide receiver had more than 600 yards.
 • Passing game averaged just 164.1 yards per game.

2025 Solution: New Weapons in the Passing Game

 • Antonio Gates Jr. (WR, Michigan State, 6’2”) – A former FBS player with great hands and size.
 • Jadyn Robinson (WR, Junipero Serra HS, 3? recruit) – The highest-rated recruit in DSU history.
 • Ezekiel Orozco (WR, Long Beach Poly HS) – A speedster who adds a much-needed deep threat.

With these new playmakers under the tutelage of DeSean Jackson we should expect Delaware State’s passing attack to be much more dynamic in 2025.

A New National Recruiting Pipeline for Delaware State

One of the most promising aspects of Jackson’s tenure so far is his ability to recruit across multiple regions. Instead of relying only on local talent, Delaware State is now pulling players from top football states across the country.

 • California (Long Beach Poly, Junipero Serra HS) – A pipeline for elite wide receivers and defensive backs.
 • Midwest (Michigan State, East St. Louis HS) – Bringing in FBS transfers and big offensive linemen.
 • Southeast (Georgia, Florida, Texas) – Adding speed and athleticism across multiple positions.
 • Maryland/DC Area (St. Frances Academy, Charles H. Flowers HS) – A hotbed for defensive talent.

By expanding its recruiting footprint, Delaware State is becoming a more attractive option for high-level prospects looking to play HBCU football.

UPDATE: This story was originally reported that Chris Trumbull had flipped his commitment from Jackson State to Delaware State. Since the original reporting, we have seen credible commentary online to suggest that there may not have been an offer in place from Jackson State, despite the player’s posts suggesting otherwise. We have updated the information in the post to reflect this new information.

Chris Trumbull, a standout defensive player from Red Lion Christian Academy in Bear, Delaware, has decided to stay in his home state to play for Delaware State and first-year HBCU head coach DeSean Jackson.

Trumbull’s Decision

Trumbull announced his commitment to Jackson State on February 2. However, just a few days later, he reconsidered his decision and officially decommitted on February 5 with a post on X (formerly Twitter):

After talking with my family, coaches, and friends, I have made a decision to decommit from Jackson State University. This decision wasn’t easy for me to make. I want to thank the JSU coaches for believing in me and giving me this opportunity. I am truly grateful and thank the JSU fans for showing me love. This decision is what’s best for me moving forward. Please respect my decision.”

On February 6, Trumbull announced that had committed to the Hornets, stating:

“Change of plans, I’m staying home! LET’S WORK!”

A Key Addition for Delaware State

Trumbull is considered one of the top defensive players in the state of Delaware and he played a major role in Red Lion Christian Academy’s success, helping the team reach the Delaware 2A State Semifinals. As a senior he compiled 120 total tackles, 27 tackles for loss, and 13 sacks, making him a key defensive presence. His decision to play for Delaware State strengthens the team’s defensive line and adds a proven playmaker to the Hornets’ roster.

The Growing Influence of HBCU Football

Trumbull’s desire to play for DeSean Jackson at Delaware State while having offers from schools like Syracuse, Toledo, and Memphis, highlights the increasing competitiveness of the HBCU football brand.

DeSean Jackson has landed an NFL assistant who played his college ball at an HBCU as Cleveland Browns assistant Nyema Washington is set to join his staff.

Washington is set to join Delaware State as its offensive coordinator, according to 247Sports. Washington spent the last two seasons in Cleveland as the Bill Willis diversity coaching fellow, working with running backs and tight ends.

The former Bowie State quarterback has already seen success at the college level.

Neyma Washington, HBCU Gameday, DeSean Jackson

Washington’s journey to this position is marked by resilience and dedication. After overcoming a serious cholesterol granuloma cyst on his brain, he returned to play five games for Bowie State, completing 73 of 121 pass attempts (60%) for 992 yards, 12 touchdowns, and six interceptions, leading the Bulldogs to the CIAA Championship Game as it emerged as a power in HBCU football.

Following his playing career, Washington began coaching as a student assistant at Bowie State from 2016 to 2017, and serving as a contributing writer for HBCU Gameday. He then served as a graduate assistant at West Virginia State in late 2017 before returning to Bowie State in 2019 as a receivers coach. In 2021, he was appointed offensive coordinator at Wheeling University. The offense averaged 30.5 points per game in 2022.

Now he will be returning back to HBCU football, joining a staff that will be headed by 38-year-old DeSean Jackson. He’s a rising star himself in the coaching world and could soon find himself as a head coach — or back in the NFL.

Stan Waterman is no stranger to success, and now he’s bringing that winning mindset to HBCU basketball at Delaware State University. In an engaging interview on 1-on-1 with Cobi, Waterman reflected on his journey from being a Delaware basketball legend to transforming DSU basketball into a competitive force in the MEAC.

“When I got here, the culture wasn’t about winning,” Waterman shared. “We had to shift everything—mindset, work ethic, discipline. Winning had to become the expectation, not just the hope.”

Waterman’s journey began long before Delaware State. As a standout player and later a championship-winning coach at Sanford School, he built a reputation for excellence. His success extended to the international stage when he coached the USA U-16 and U-17 Junior National Teams, leading them to two gold medals.

“Coaching USA Basketball was a career highlight,” he told Cobi. “I worked with future NBA stars and some of the best coaching minds at the high school, college, and NBA levels. It shaped how I approach the game today.”

Despite his success, Waterman admitted that transitioning to college coaching presented challenges, particularly with the impact of NIL deals and the transfer portal. Last season, three of his top five players, including the MEAC Rookie of the Year, transferred to larger programs.

“At first, I took it personally,” Waterman said. “I wondered if I wasn’t doing enough to keep them. But then I realized, this is just part of today’s game. The portal isn’t just a loss; it’s also an opportunity to bring in new talent.”

Delaware State has made significant strides under Waterman’s leadership. Last season, the Hornets reached the MEAC championship game, coming within minutes of an NCAA tournament berth.

“We had the lead with two minutes to go against Howard,” Waterman recalled. “It didn’t end the way we wanted, but that experience is a springboard for this season.”

Recruiting has also been a focal point for Waterman. He praised the support of DSU’s president, Dr. Tony Allen, and the momentum the university has generated as a leading HBCU.

“Our president always talks about being unapologetically HBCU,” Waterman said. “The energy on campus is incredible, and when recruits visit, they see that. It’s not a hard sell when you combine that with our plans for new facilities and our growing reputation.”

Waterman takes great pride in leading a program in his home state.

HBCU Delaware State University

“It’s a dream job,” he told Cobi. “I grew up here, played here, and now I get to coach here. It means everything to me.”

As the MEAC season continues, Waterman is focused on keeping Delaware State University competitive in a tough conference.

“From Howard to Norfolk State to Central, every night is a battle,” Waterman said. “But that’s what makes this league special. You have to bring your best every single game.”

Looking ahead, Waterman remains clear about his goals.

“We’ve laid the foundation,” he said. “Now, it’s about taking that next step—winning the MEAC, making the NCAA tournament, and putting Delaware State on the map as a force in HBCU sports.”

With Waterman at the helm, the Hornets are poised for continued growth, proving that success starts with vision, hard work, and a belief in what’s possible.

As soon as former Philadelphia Eagles stars Michael Vick and DeSean Jackson were named head coaches at their respective HBCU football programs, the game between their programs took on much more importance.

Jackson, the Pro Bowl wide receiver-turned-Delaware State head football coach, has an idea he thinks can take advantage of the moment.

While speaking with another former Philadelphia Eagles star, LeSean McCoy, on The 25 10 Podcast, Jackson revealed his hopes that the HBCU matchup can be held at the Eagles’ home, Lincoln Financial Field.

“It’s crazy because we play them November 1st — I’m trying to get them at The Link,” Jackson told McCoy.

“That’s at “The Link — it’s gonna go down,” McCoy replied.

DeSean Jackson, HBCU

Although Delaware State and Norfolk State have played on regular basis for nearly 30 years, the game isn’t necessarily considered a rivalry. Norfolk State only drew a crowd of 3,002 fans in its Nov. 16 win over DSU in a stadium that seats 30k. The previous year’s game in Dover, DE drew 3,467 fans to Alumni Stadium. Since 2013, the two teams have only played in front of a crowd of over 10,000 fans twice — both games serving as Norfolk State’s homecoming.

Michael Vick, HBCU

Then again, neither program was a serious contender for the title during that span as they combined for one winning record (Norfolk State in 2021). And neither program was coached by anyone with as much mass appeal as Michael Vick or DeSean Jackson, who played together with the Philadelphia Eagles under Andy Reid.

“It’s gonna be crazy, I can’t wait. I think we’re going to build something special. We’ve been talking too. We’re going to do like a live-stream or something like that give proceeds back to the university or a foundation,” Jackson said. “I’m excited, man, to take on this position. I feel like what he’s gonna build over there in Norfolk and I’m going to build over in Delaware State — I think them two university’s they couldn’t get better guys to lead their universities.”

DeSean Jackson recently shared the story of his unexpected journey to becoming an HBCU football head coach at Delaware State University during a conversation on his podcast, 25/10, with LeSean McCoy. The interview shed light on how the former NFL star transitioned from coaching high school football to taking on a leadership role at one of the nation’s most prominent HBCUs.

“It’s crazy,” Jackson began, explaining the series of events that led to his new position. “About a month and a half ago, I got a call from Antoine Tyler, a guy I grew up with. He mentioned that Tesan Starr, who just got one of the athletic director roles at Delaware State, was asking about me.” Jackson admitted to McCoy that his first reaction was to dismiss the idea. “At first, I said, ‘No way. I’m enjoying coaching high school right now. I’ve got my freedom, I’m having fun.’”

DeSean Jackson NFL HBCU Delaware State University

McCoy pressed Jackson on what eventually changed his mind, prompting Jackson to reveal the persistence of those around him. “Antoine didn’t take no for an answer,” Jackson laughed. “He told Tesan, ‘Yeah, DeSean’s in,’ even though I wasn’t!” Jackson went on to share how Coach Travis, someone he considers like a big brother, also got involved. “Tesan reached out to Coach Travis, and he called me, trying to convince me. I still said no.”

As the conversation continued, Jackson described how things escalated. “Antoine eventually pulled up on me with Tesan on FaceTime. Tesan was like, ‘Man, we’re really interested. We think this could happen.’ In less than 48 hours, I was on a flight to Delaware, meeting with the university president.”

McCoy couldn’t help but ask about the interview process, to which Jackson responded, “Man, it was intense but exciting. It felt like being a free agent or getting drafted.” Jackson explained how the university grilled him on everything from his leadership style and football IQ to managing players’ behavior off the field. “They even asked about my community relationships and how I could help with funding. Delaware State hasn’t had much success over the past 10 years, so they were looking for someone to rebuild the program.”

The conversation turned to the competition Jackson faced for the HBCU coaching role, which included high-profile names like Chris Carter. “I went up against some heavy hitters,” Jackson admitted. “But after the interview, they told me I stood out, and I outbid everyone else.”

Shady asked what ultimately convinced Jackson to take the job. Jackson reflected, “At first, I was hesitant because I was enjoying high school coaching. But when I thought about the chance to rally an entire community and create a legacy, I couldn’t pass it up. I knew once my name went across the ESPN ticker, the attention and support would follow.”

The podcast also highlighted Tesan Starr’s crucial role in the process. Jackson credited Starr’s determination and strategic vision as key factors in bringing him to Delaware State. “Tesan knew what he wanted, and he made sure I understood how much of an impact this could have, not just for the program but for the community,” Jackson told McCoy.

As the episode concluded, DeSean Jackson emphasized his excitement for the opportunity and his belief in the potential of Delaware State University football. His journey, shared candidly with McCoy, underscored not only the challenges but also the immense possibilities of leading an HBCU program. Fans and supporters now eagerly await the next chapter of Delaware State football under Jackson’s leadership, with the promise of renewed energy and excellence

Delaware State University football is undergoing a major transformation under new head coach DeSean Jackson, and one of the first players to join this new era is wide receiver Anthony James Jr. The former HBCU wide receiver from Morgan State player has transferred to conference rival Delaware State, drawn by the chance to learn from Jackson, a former NFL star known for his elite skills and game-breaking ability.

James explained that his decision to transfer was about more than just football. “I want to learn the way he thinks,” James said. “How does he look at the defense? How does he know what’s going on? Everybody has different ways of coaching, and I just want to see how he thinks about his routes.” For James, it’s about personal growth and development, and he is eager to compete in his new environment.

Other members of DeSean Jackson’s first recruiting class include some of the most talented players Delaware State has seen in years. Wide receiver Jadyn Robinson, a three-star recruit from Junipero Serra High School in Gardena, CA, is among them. Robinson, who had scholarship offers from Grambling, Texas, Arizona State, and Syracuse, is more than likely the highest-rated recruit in recent history for the program. His decision to join Delaware State over schools with long-established football traditions is a testament to the excitement Jackson is building around the Hornets.

The recruiting class also includes running back Kobe Boykin from Los Angeles, a three-star talent transferring from Jackson State, and 6’7” offensive lineman Elijah Payne, who started his career at Arizona. Both players bring size and skill to key positions. Running back Derek Boyd from Crenshaw, CA, and safety Tracy Foe Jones from Long Beach Poly High School round out a group of athletes Jackson is bringing to Delaware State from the West Coast, establishing a new pipeline for the HBCU program.

James, Robinson, and the rest of this talented group are part of Jackson’s vision to elevate Delaware State football and raise the program’s profile in HBCU sports. “He’s going to bring attention. He’s going to bring exposure,” James said about Jackson. The new head coach’s ability to recruit top-tier talent, coupled with his NFL pedigree, has created a sense of optimism around the program.

Former NFL star DeSean Jackson popped up on the popular radio show The Breakfast Club on Power 105.1 FM, chatting with DJ Envy, Charlamagne tha God, and Jess Hilarious about his new job as an HBCU head coach.

“I can’t get back to go out there and catch touchdowns, so going out there and helping them young kids and training them—it kind of matched that void that I missed from catching touchdowns.”

Jackson, known for his electrifying 15-year NFL career, is now bringing his talent and vision to Delaware State University as the new head coach of the Hornets football team. His move highlights a growing trend of former NFL stars taking the reins at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), following the path paved by figures like Deion Sanders and Eddie George. For Jackson, the decision to step into coaching wasn’t initially on his radar. After retiring in 2022, he spent a year coaching high school football, where he rediscovered his passion for the game.

Jackson said his move to Delaware State isn’t about money—it’s about purpose. Growing up in Los Angeles, he understood the challenges young athletes face in underserved communities.

“Honestly, man, to change young kids’ lives, give them opportunities, give them hope… that was my motivation,” he told The Breakfast Club.

With this mindset, Jackson is ready to take on the challenges facing Delaware State’s football program and elevate the profile of HBCU athletics. His decision to join the Hornets reflects a commitment to making a meaningful impact at an HBCU while inspiring others to rise to the occasion.

Recruiting top talent is an essential part of Jackson’s plan to rebuild the Hornets. HBCUs often face difficulties competing with larger programs for recruits, but Jackson plans to leverage his NFL pedigree and network to attract players who might have otherwise overlooked Delaware State.

“Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders showed a lot of players that are big that you can go to an HBCU, ball out, and still go get the NIL money and do everything and still be successful,” Jackson said on The Breakfast Club. He aims to make Delaware State a top choice for athletes looking for exposure and success.

DeSean Jackson, NFL, HBCU,

Despite the challenges of limited resources and facilities, DeSean Jackson’s presence is already bringing a renewed sense of hope to Delaware State. He recognizes that HBCUs like Delaware State have faced hurdles in gaining visibility, but he sees these obstacles as opportunities to create something special.

Speaking about his first impressions of the university, he shared, “When I stepped foot on that campus, it was just like the morale… you could tell the people around just wanted to win.” Jackson also emphasized the importance of pulling together resources to improve the program and discussed potential collaborations with figures like Kevin Hart and Michael Rubin. “Kevin asked me, ‘What can I do? You got a building I can put my name on?’ and I told him, ‘We’ve got plenty of things you can help with,’” Jackson explained.

His relationships with influential individuals provide a unique opportunity to bring additional resources and visibility to Delaware State.
A major part of DeSean Jackson’s vision is rooted in the lessons he learned from legendary figures like Jerry Rice and Deion Sanders, who have both played pivotal roles in his journey. “Deion has always been like a mentor to me. He’s for the culture, and I’ve learned so much from how he’s built programs and inspired players. Jerry Rice taught me about work ethic and what it takes to stay consistent at the highest level,” Jackson reflected during the interview. These influences are evident in Jackson’s commitment to bringing excellence and pride to Delaware State.

Through his leadership and recruiting strategy, Jackson is determined to build a winning culture at Delaware State. He wants to instill a sense of pride in the program and create a path forward for the university to compete on a higher level. By addressing the visibility challenges faced by HBCUs, capitalizing on NIL opportunities, and leading with purpose, Jackson is working to transform Delaware State into a program that can stand toe-to-toe with larger schools. His commitment to mentoring players and creating opportunities for them to succeed underscores his belief in the potential of HBCUs to thrive. “

If you want to be an elite scholar-athlete, it’s certain things you have to do… I know what it looks like, I know what the next level wants,” he emphasized on The Breakfast Club.

DeSean Jackson’s arrival at Delaware State represents more than just a coaching hire. It’s a statement about the power of representation, the potential of HBCUs, and the transformative impact of modern leadership. With his vision, the Hornets are ready to take flight, proving that even in the face of challenges, HBCU football can reach new heights.

DeSean Jackson is determined to transform Delaware State University (DSU) into a dominant force in HBCU football. The former NFL Pro Bowler turned head coach has set his sights on elevating the Hornets from years of struggle to the pinnacle of HBCU excellence, with a MEAC championship and a Celebration Bowl appearance as his ultimate goals. Although DSU hasn’t had a winning season since 2012 or won the MEAC since 2007, Jackson believes change is not only possible but imminent.

“We ain’t waiting,” Jackson declared at his introduction. “We want to be at the Celebration Bowl this year. We want to win the MEAC this year. Whatever was going on, we can’t do that anymore. We’ve got to move forward and change that, starting on day one.”

DeSean Jackson understands the importance of revitalizing DSU’s football program within the context of HBCU pride and culture. His vision includes not just winning games but also making DSU football a symbol of excellence in the broader HBCU landscape. “This isn’t about rebuilding,” he said. “We don’t have time to play or waste. We’re doing it right now.”

The former wide receiver plans to leverage his NFL pedigree to attract top talent to DSU while emphasizing the values central to HBCUs—community, character, and academic success. “I can give you two things: exposure and publicity,” Jackson explained. “If you want to make it to the NFL, I know what it looks like. But it starts with the little things—academics, integrity, and buying into the system.”

DeSean Jackson, HBCU

Jackson’s aspirations go beyond the field. He sees DSU football as a unifying force for the campus and the Dover community, reflecting the heart of HBCU traditions. “Without the community, we can’t accomplish our goals,” he emphasized. “We need everyone to fill the stands, to bring energy. These young men need to feel that support when they’re out there.”

Jackson also sees his role as a continuation of the HBCU legacy—a responsibility he embraces fully. “This feels better than draft day,” he reflected. “It’s proof that if you believe in yourself and trust the process, anything is possible.”

To achieve his goals, Jackson has surrounded himself with a passionate and experienced coaching staff, including his lifelong friend Travis Clark. Together, they’re working to instill a culture of hard work and discipline. “The passion we’re bringing is real,” Jackson said. “The players are going to feel it, and the results will follow.”

Jackson’s challenge is formidable, but his commitment to elevating DSU and the HBCU community is unwavering. He sees the Hornets as a program capable of competing not just in the MEAC but on a national stage.

“Don’t wait too late to hop on this wave,” Jackson urged. “Because I promise you, it’s going to be real.”

Less than a week after being officially named head coach at Delaware State, former NFL star DeSean Jackson is creating a pipeline from the West Coast to the HBCU.

Jackson, who hails from Los Angeles, has received multiple commits from California since his hire was announced. Travis Clark, who coached with Jackson at Long Beach Wilson High School this past season has been instrumental in securing the commitments.

First there was running back Kobe Boykin, a Los Angeles product who spent last season at Jackson State. Boykin hit the portal over the weekend, and committed to Delaware State shortly after announcing his entry into the portal. Boykin is from Los Angeles.

Boykin was considered a three-star talent, and getting him to jump from the newly-minted HBCU national champion to a team that has won two games in two years.

A few days later Jackson came up with another commit from out west — this time a big man. Offensive lineman Elijah Payne is a 6’7 player who started his career at Arizona. The Las Vegas, Nev. native prepped at Sierra Canyon High School in Chatsworth, Calif. He Played guard and tackle as a member of the 10-5 overall and 4-1 in conference varsity team in 2022. Payne was a three-star prospect with offers from Arizona State, Arkansas, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Miami, Nevada, Oregon, Oregon State, UNLV, and Utah State.

DeSean Jackson and Travis Clark have hit the transfer portal running.

Another commitment came in from former Hawaii running back Derek Boyd, who hails from Crenshaw, CA.

“Today, I proudly commit to Delaware State University, a place where I’ll grow as both an athlete and an individual,” Boyd wrote. “I’m excited to join a program with a rich history, led by hall-of-fame coach DeSean Jackson, whose legacy inspires me to push myself every day.”

Another addition is Tracy Foe Jones, a free safety out of Long Beach Poly High School.

It’s quite clear from his short time at he helm at Delaware State that DeSean Jackson is creating an HBCU pipeline to the west coast — something that has historically been difficult to do. It will be interesting to see how it works out moving forward.

Delaware State University, a rising HBCU football program, has made a significant addition to its roster by securing Antonio Gates Jr., a 4-star wide receiver and son of NFL legend Antonio Gates Sr. Under the leadership of new head coach DeSean Jackson, the Hornets are bolstering their lineup with top-tier talent, positioning themselves as contenders in the HBCU football landscape. Gates Jr. announced his decision via his Instagram account on New Year’s Eve 2024.

Antonio Gates Jr.: A Legacy of NFL Greatness

Antonio Gates Jr., whose father Antonio Gates Sr. is widely regarded as one of the greatest tight ends in NFL history, brings both talent and pedigree to Delaware State. Gates Sr., an eight-time Pro Bowler and current Pro Football Hall of Fame finalist set the NFL record for the most touchdown receptions by a tight end with 116 during his storied career with the San Diego Chargers.

Gates Jr. emerged as a 4-star recruit out of Fordson High School in Dearborn, Michigan. Ranked among the top wide receiver prospects in the nation by ESPN, 247Sports, and On3, Gates Jr. was a dominant force in high school football. His senior season included 55 receptions for 925 yards and 16 touchdowns, earning him first-team all-state honors.

College Career and Transfer to Delaware State

After starting his collegiate career at Michigan State, Gates Jr. redshirted in 2022. In the 2023 season, he played in 12 games, recording five catches for 82 yards and one touchdown. A 45-yard touchdown reception against Richmond highlighted his season as Michigan State’s longest-scoring pass play of the year.

Looking for a new opportunity, Gates Jr. entered the transfer portal and committed to Delaware State, becoming one of the program’s most high-profile recruits.

DeSean Jackson’s NFL Influence on Delaware State

DeSean Jackson, a three-time Pro Bowler and former NFL wide receiver, took over as Delaware State’s head coach in late 2024. With 15 seasons of NFL experience, Jackson has brought his professional connections and leadership to the HBCU football scene, helping to attract elite talent like Gates Jr.

Jackson’s efforts to rebuild the Hornets include assembling a strong recruiting class that also features Kobe Boykin (ATH, Jackson State), Torion White (DB, UConn/JUCO), Elijha Payne (OL, Arizona), Derek Boyd (RB, Hawaii), and Luke Jackson (K, East Texas A&M).

Delaware State’s Rising Profile in HBCU Football

Antonio Gates Jr.’s arrival at Delaware State is a pivotal moment for the Hornets as they aim to compete with other top HBCU football programs. The combination of Gates Jr.’s talent and Jackson’s NFL background creates a foundation for future success.

With the addition of Gates Jr. and other key recruits, Delaware State is poised to make an impact in HBCU football and beyond, drawing attention from fans and NFL scouts alike.

Delaware State University’s new head football coach, DeSean Jackson, didn’t waste any time making waves in the recruiting world and snatching up another HBCU player. Officially hired on Friday, Jackson has already secured his first transfer portal commitment: running back Kobe Boykin from Jackson State, the reigning 2024 HBCU National Champions.

Both Jackson and Boykin hail from Los Angeles, creating a natural connection between the two. Boykin, a freshman, is a 5-foot-8, 165-pound standout with a decorated high school career. He played at Orange High School in California and Miami Edison in Florida, earning accolades such as Orange Coast League MVP, First Team All-State, and MaxPreps All-American honors.

Boykin announced his decision to enter the transfer portal at 12:01 PM on Sunday. He announced his decision to commit to DSU at 4:08 PM on Twitter,“ @DeSeanJackson10 #Jaccera long way from 6th ave! Let’s do it.”

DeSean Jackson, a Crenshaw district native and former NFL star, is determined to transform Delaware State’s football program. His hiring has generated excitement around DSU, and landing Boykin, from a championship culture is an early sign of progress.

Boykin’s addition strengthens Delaware State’s roster and shows Jackson’s ability to attract talent as he begins his tenure. DSU is set to welcome Boykin to campus soon, with hopes he can bring the same level of success he experienced at Jackson State.

The journey for Delaware State football under Jackson’s leadership has officially begun.

Former NFL star Desean Jackson is officially the head coach at HBCU Delaware State University.

The school formally announced the news on Friday.

“DeSean Jackson is a perfect fit for our institution – incredibly competitive, optimistic about the prospects for our collective future, and focused on the fundamentals of the institution: STUDENTS FIRST,” said Tucker.

Jackson, a Los Angeles native from the Crenshaw district, played 15 seasons in the NFL with notable stints in Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington, all of which are areas of primary recruiting emphasis for Delaware State University. Jackson began his career as a big-play wide receiver for the Philadelphia Eagles and continues to hold the record for most 60+ and 80+ yard catches in NFL history. A three-time Pro Bowler, Jackson also played for the Los Angeles Rams, the Las Vegas Raiders, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Jackson emphasized the rich tradition of HBCU student-athletes that largely transformed professional sports in the latter half of the 20th century.

“HBCUs have much to be proud of in creating a more representative America. But that story is not simply a historical one. It continues to be written and includes the elevation of HBCU scholars and scholar athletes in every field of human endeavor,” said Jackson.

“The opportunity for me to help write another chapter here at DSU is a once-in-a-lifetime moment consistent with my journey as a young boy finding his way to manhood through mentorship, accountability, achievement, and discipline,” Jackson continued. “If we build that kind of culture at Delaware State University, we will attract the right talent and radically change the trajectory of this program. I cannot wait to get started.” Amazon Prime will release a documentary on Jackson’s life this fall.

Andy Reid, a three-time Super Bowl Champion and Head Coach of the Kansas City Chiefs, was emphatic in his support for Jackson. Reid was Jackson’s coach during their time with the Philadelphia Eagles.

“DeSean is like a son to me – a fierce competitor on the field, without rival, and a quality leader off of it,” said Reid. “I could not be more supportive of his desire to coach Division I football and would stake my career on his success at Delaware State University. We are bound at the hip and are forever family. I cannot wait to see where he takes the University and where the University takes him. This is a win-win for everyone, particularly the young men that get to learn from him and the incredible staff he will assemble – many football aficionados who have been with him since the very beginning.”

Many others have offered their support, including Super Bowl Champion Head Coach Sean McVay, who noted Jackson’s love of the game as well as his three-phase football acumen.

“I could talk about this guy all day, but the short of it is that you get a high-character leader of men, a student of the game, and an authentic passion that will inspire new supporters to Delaware State University football,” said McVay.

Three-time Super Bowl champion and Delaware State University alumnus John Taylor, who played for the San Francisco 49ers throughout his career and who was a 2019 Black Collegiate Football Hall of Fame inductee, also happens to be DeSean Jackson’s uncle.

“Having played football for many different coaches throughout my career, each one has added a unique dynamic to my game. I’m excited to see the new direction Coach Jackson will take the team – his vision and leadership are sure to bring fresh energy and opportunities for growth,” said Taylor.

The hiring of DeSean Jackson concludes an exhaustive search that emphasized the University’s renewed commitment to athletic transformation. Two years ago, the HBCU began its Athletic Transformation project focused primarily on football with a $1MM gift by former scholar-athlete Steve Ewing (c/o 1983) and $9MM in support from the State of Delaware. The centerpiece of the effort is an indoor training facility for all scholar-athletes at the University, and key upgrades to Alumni Stadium. The overall project is expected to cost $25MM – $30MM.

“We no longer dream big dreams. We are in execution mode, which means having the right vision, the right talent, and a set of inspirational leaders who can see the road ahead for a university whose time has come. DeSean will be one of those leaders throughout our institution,” said University President Tony Allen.

Delaware State University has ranked in the top 5 public HBCUs and top 10 HBCUs overall since Dr. Allen began his tenure in January 2020. The University is also now the #1 choice for students of color in Delaware and home to the state-sponsored Inspire Scholarship, a fully funded, tuition-free scholarship for any Delaware-graduating high school senior with a 2.75 GPA and a commitment to public service at the University. More than 70 percent of incoming, in-state, first-year students are Inspire Scholars.

Delaware State University will hold its first press conference with Coach Jackson on campus at the University’s Athletic Hall of Fame in the MLK Student Center on Wednesday, January 8, 2025.

Former Philadelphia Eagles star DeSean Jackson appears to be the next former NFL star to take over at an HBCU.

Jackson is expected to be named the next head coach at Delaware State according to multiple reports. The news was first reported by Jeff Lightsy, Jr. on Thursday afternoon.

Delaware State is an FCS HBCU that plays in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC). The school recently fired head coach Lee Hull after two seasons and a 2-21 record. DSU has not had a winning season since 2012 and hasn’t won a MEAC title since 2007.

Desean Jackson, NFL, HBCU, Philadelphia Eagles

DeSean Jackson had a long, successful NFL career, primarily with the Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Redskins. From 2008 through 2022 he caught 641 passes for 11,263 yards and 58 touchdowns, earning three Pro Bowl nods. He had two 1,000 yard plus seasons with the Washington franchise before his numbers began to decline as he hopped to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, back to the Eagles and had stints with the Raiders and Baltimore Ravens before his career ended in 2002.

Jackson’s hire comes less than a week after Michael Vick, another former Philadelphia Eagles star, was officially named head coach at Norfolk State University, another HBCU in the MEAC. They are the latest former NFL stars to be hired as HBCU head football coaches with little to no head coaching experience. Deion Sanders kicked it off in 2020 when he was named head coach at Jackson State. Eddie George was hired at Tennnessee State a few months after that and Eddie Robinson Jr. was hired at his alma mater — Alabama State — despite having never coached prior to accepting that job in Dec. 2021.

Delaware State University, the state’s lone HBCU, has a new director of athletics as it prepares to search for a new football coach.

Delaware State has fired head football coach Lee Hull after two seasons and is replacing Dr. Alecia Shields-Gadson as director of athletics with Tony Tucker.

Hull went 2-21 in two seasons at the Delaware HBCU, winning one game each and going winless (0-10) in MEAC play during that period. The University has already launched a nationwide search for Hull’s replacement.

“We appreciate coach Hull’s dedication to the football program and the student-athletes at DSU, and wish him well in all future endeavors.”

Lee Hull, Delaware State University

Shields-Gadson will be stepping down in January. She was appointed to lead the University’s Athletics programs in August 2021.

“I want to thank Dr. Shields-Gadson for all her hard work to strengthen Delaware State University’s athletics programs during her time as AD,” said Dr. Irene Hawkins, Executive Vice President of Delaware State University. “Her knowledge, deep experience in intercollegiate athletics, and respect around the country have been a real asset to our student-athletes and the entire University community.”

Shields-Gadson will be replaced by Senior Associate Vice President for Athletics and Wellness Recreation Charles A. “Tony” Tucker, a Delaware native and former University of Delaware basketball player. Tucker was a teammate of current DSU men’s basketball coach Stan Waterman, but has never worked in intercollegiate athletics prior to his current role.

Once a powerhouse in MEAC football, the Dover, Delaware-based HBCU has struggled, winning just one MEAC title since 1991.

Delaware State University’s women’s volleyball team is making its second NCAA Tournament appearance in three years, continuing its rise as a competitive HBCU force in collegiate volleyball. The Hornets will take on top-seeded Penn State in the first round on Friday, Dec. 6, at 7:30 p.m. in University Park, Pennsylvania.

Delaware State earned its spot in the tournament with a thrilling 3-2 victory over Howard University in the MEAC Championship on Nov. 24. The win, which extended their season-ending winning streak to six matches, showcased the team’s determination and poise under pressure. The Hornets finished the season with a 17-13 overall record and an 11-4 mark in MEAC play.

Leading the charge for Delaware State is senior outside hitter Gerren Tomlin, who paced the team with 359 kills and an average of 3.26 kills per set. Middle blocker Martyna Kmuk added 209 kills, a .232 hitting percentage, and 51 blocks, while setter Paige Ahakuelo contributed 546 assists, demonstrating exceptional court vision and playmaking ability. Defensive specialist Morgan Allen has also been a key contributor with 225 digs and 31 aces.

The Hornets will face a significant challenge in Penn State, a perennial volleyball powerhouse with a 29-2 record (19-1 Big Ten). The Nittany Lions secured the top seed in their bracket and entered the tournament on a six-match winning streak. Despite the tough opponent, Delaware State is no stranger to competing on big stages, having made the NCAA Tournament in 2022.

This will be the first-ever meeting between Delaware State and Penn State in women’s volleyball, providing the Hornets with an opportunity to showcase their growth and represent HBCU excellence on a national stage. With a balanced lineup of experienced players and rising stars, Delaware State aims to embrace the challenge and continue building its legacy.

Regardless of the outcome, the Hornets’ second NCAA Tournament appearance is a testament to the program’s steady development and resilience, cementing Delaware State as a team to watch in collegiate volleyball.

In an intense HBCU showdown, Morgan State emerged victorious over Delaware State with a final score of 36-28 at Alumni Stadium in Dover. The Bears, now 5-5 on the season and 2-1 in the MEAC, relied on a balanced offensive attack and clutch field goals to edge past the Hornets, who now sit at 1-9 and 0-3 in the conference.

Morgan State started strong with quarterback Duce Taylor connecting on a 46-yard touchdown pass to Malique Leatherbury in the first quarter. The Bears’ offense maintained momentum, with standout performances including Jason Collins’ 138 rushing yards on 24 carries, highlighted by a spectacular 75-yard touchdown run. Taylor kept the passing game alive with 218 yards and a touchdown on 17-of-28 attempts. Kicker Sahr Gbundema was crucial, going 3-for-3 on field goals, including a late 36-yarder to extend Morgan State’s lead.

Delaware State countered with impressive plays from quarterback C.J. Henry, who threw for 294 yards and two touchdowns, both of which went to Jaden Sutton. Sutton delivered on the ground as well, leading the Hornets with 135 rushing yards on 19 carries, including a 65-yard touchdown run that briefly gave Delaware State the lead in the third quarter.

Morgan State’s defense proved pivotal, recording three sacks, including two by Lance Byndon, and allowing only one score in the final quarter. Special teams also stepped up, as Gbundema’s field goals in the third and fourth quarters kept the Bears ahead. Delaware State’s defense held its own, with Kahleef Jimmison leading the Hornets with 12 tackles.

In this HBCU contest, Morgan State’s ground attack and Gbundema’s consistency helped them secure the win, setting up a high-stakes clash with South Carolina State next week. HBCU Wrestling and Delaware State University (DSU) have announced a landmark partnership, launching the first-ever Division I women’s wrestling program at an HBCU, made possible by a $1.25 million donation from HBCU Wrestling. This historic program will expand opportunities for women athletes at DSU and set a standard for representation in collegiate sports.

“This partnership gives our women student-athletes a platform to compete, grow, and inspire,” said Dr. Alecia Shields-Gadson, Delaware State University Director of Athletics. “We are thrilled for the impact this program will have.”

DSU is currently searching for a head coach, with the women’s wrestling season set to begin in 2025-26.

Founded in 2021, HBCU Wrestling has been committed to bringing wrestling back to HBCUs, starting with a $2.7 million gift to Morgan State University that revitalized its wrestling program. DSU’s new women’s team marks another step in its mission to create opportunities for Black athletes.

Earlier last year, HBCU Wrestling hosted a wrestling clinic at DSU, led by Olympic medalist Toccara Montgomery, which sparked enthusiasm among participants and the university’s athletic community. Seeing the excitement around that clinic, Montgomery, the first Black woman to win a World Championship for the U.S. in wrestling, expressed pride in DSU’s new program.

“Seeing DSU launch the first-ever Division I women’s wrestling team at an HBCU is monumental,” Montgomery said. “This program will inspire young women of color to chase their dreams and know they belong.”

With a legacy of wrestling dating back decades, Delaware State University was the last HBCU with a Division I wrestling program until it was discontinued in 2009. Now with more support DSU is reviving its program with a commitment to gender equity and Title IX standards, creating a sustainable platform for young women athletes to excel.

“This announcement isn’t just about wrestling—it’s about creating life-changing opportunities,” said Jahi Jones, Executive Director of HBCU Wrestling. “We are building a foundation where young women feel seen, valued, and loved while achieving their athletic dreams.”

The post HBCU Football: What We Learned After Week 1 of MEAC Play appeared first on HBCU Gameday.

]]>
The first week of HBCU football in the MEAC provided a clear look at team strengths, key players, and areas needing improvement. As the season unfolds, North Carolina Central and South Carolina State have emerged as top contenders, while other teams face challenges in offense and consistency. Here’s what we’ve learned about each team, the standout players making an impact, and their strengths and weaknesses.

North Carolina Central University (NCCU): The Class of the MEAC

Key Players: Walker Harris (QB), J’Mari Taylor (RB), Jaki Brevard (LB)

 • Strengths: Balanced, Adaptive Offense, Efficient Defense
 • Weaknesses: Depth in Secondary Pass Coverage

NCCU entered MEAC play as a preseason favorite, and its early performance has justified that ranking. Quarterback Walker Harris efficiently leads a balanced offense, skillfully blending passing with a strong ground game led by running back J’Mari Taylor, who is averaging close to 100 yards per game. On defense, linebacker Jaki Brevard anchors a disciplined unit that excels in third-down stops and red-zone play.

While NCCU’s defensive front is among the strongest in the MEAC, occasional lapses in secondary coverage could be tested by high-powered passing teams. Nonetheless, NCCU’s balanced and adaptable approach makes them the team to beat in the MEAC.

South Carolina State, MEAC, HBCU

South Carolina State University (SCSU): The Primary Challenger

Key Players: Eric Phoenix (QB), Caden High (WR), Jayden Broughton (DL)

 • Strengths: Explosive Offense, Strong Run Defense
 • Weaknesses: Vulnerabilities in Pass Defense

South Carolina State has emerged as the only real challenger to NCCU’s dominance. Quarterback Eric Phoenix is among the MEAC’s top quarterbacks, leading an offense with big-play potential, particularly with deep targets like wide receiver Caden High. SCSU’s passing game is explosive, creating consistent threats to score. Jayden Broughton, a dominant force on the defensive line, reinforces a strong run-stopping defense.

However, SCSU’s secondary has shown vulnerability, sometimes allowing big gains through the air. While their aggressive defensive approach creates turnovers, it can leave them exposed to strong passing attacks. For South Carolina State to compete at the top, tightening their pass defense will be essential.

Morgan State University: Defense Delivers, Offense Struggles

Key Players: Elijah Williams (DL), Arturo Mattocks (LB), Myles Miree (RB)

 • Strengths: Dominant Defense, Effective Pass Rush
 • Weaknesses: Limited Offensive Production

Morgan State’s defense, led by standout linemen Elijah Williams and linebacker Arturo Mattocks, has delivered on its preseason expectations, consistently generating pressure, tackles for loss, and quarterback sacks. Their defense has kept them competitive, making Morgan a tough opponent to score against.

However, its offense has struggled to produce points. Running back Myles Miree leads their conservative ground game, but limited passing success leaves them predictable. Morgan State’s success this season will hinge on whether they can generate more offensive yards to support their defense.

Howard University: Defensive Bright Spots, Inconsistent Quarterback Play

Key Players: Ja’Shawn Scroggins (QB), Kenny Gallop Jr. (S), Jarett Hunter (RB)

 • Strengths: Versatile Defense, Strong Pass Coverage
 • Weaknesses: Inconsistent Quarterback Play, Offensive Efficiency

Howard came into the season with high expectations, but inconsistent quarterback play from Ja’Shawn Scroggins has hampered offensive success. Scroggins’ struggles with accuracy have stalled drives, despite solid ground support from running back Jarett Hunter. On defense, safety Kenny Gallop Jr. has been a consistent playmaker, leading a strong pass defense that generates turnovers.

While Howard’s defense is effective at limiting high-scoring opponents, the team’s success will depend on more reliable quarterback play. If Scroggins can improve his decision-making, Howard has the potential to challenge the MEAC’s top teams.

Delaware State University: Consistent but Limited

Key Players: Jaden Sutton (RB), Marqui Adams (QB), Kahleef Jimmison (LB)

 • Strengths: Steady Rushing Game, Disciplined Defense
 • Weaknesses: Limited Passing Attack, Depth on Defense

Delaware State’s performance closely aligns with preseason expectations. Running back Jaden Sutton anchors a solid rushing game, while quarterback Marqui Adams provides steady, if not high-scoring, support. Linebacker Kahleef Jimmison leads a disciplined defense, but the team’s lack of depth in the secondary leaves them vulnerable against passing-focused teams.

For Delaware State to advance in the MEAC standings, they’ll need more offensive balance and defensive depth. Their strong running game has kept them competitive, but limited passing potential may hinder them against the conference’s top teams.

Norfolk State University: The Spoilers

Key Players: AJ Richardson (LB), Daylan Long (DB), Kevon King (RB)

 • Strengths: Effective Ground Game, Turnover Generation
 • Weaknesses: Inconsistent Passing, Defensive Depth

Norfolk State has shown potential as a dark horse in the MEAC, with linebacker AJ Richardson and defensive back Daylan Long leading a turnover-generating defense. Running back Kevon King drives their offense with a solid ground game. However, their passing game lacks consistency, limiting their scoring potential, especially against well-rounded defenses.

Norfolk State could create surprises in the MEAC standings if it establish a more reliable passing game. If it continues improving, it could upset the top teams and play spoiler as the HBCU season progresses.

Week 1 Takeaways and MEAC Outlook

Top Teams and Key Differences: North Carolina Central and South Carolina State have set the standard in MEAC HBCU football. NCCU’s balanced offense and South Carolina State’s big-play passing game position them as frontrunners. Morgan State’s stout defense is keeping them competitive, though offensive limitations hold them back. Howard’s season will hinge on improved quarterback play, while Delaware State and Norfolk State show potential to surprise as underdogs.

Key Players Defining MEAC Football: Quarterbacks Walker Harris (NCCU) and Eric Phoenix (SCSU) are driving the top offenses in the MEAC, while running backs like Jaden Sutton (Delaware State) and Myles Miree (Morgan State) are crucial to their teams’ ground games. Defensive leaders like Elijah Williams (Morgan State) and Kenny Gallop Jr. (Howard) are making key plays that keep their teams in the fight.

Early-season trends suggest North Carolina Central is the team to beat, with South Carolina State’s high-powered offense close behind as the HBCU national title picture takes shape. If teams like Morgan State, Howard, and Norfolk State can address offensive challenges, the MEAC season promises close games and potential upsets. Week 1 has set the stage for a dynamic season in HBCU football, with each team shaping its path in MEAC standings.

The game, held in front of an enthusiastic crowd of 22,169 fans, was a high-energy showcase of South Carolina State’s offensive power, setting the stage for a thrilling homecoming experience at the historic HBCU.

From the opening drive, South Carolina State took command, as quarterback Eric Phoenix launched a 75-yard touchdown pass to Einaj Carter, setting the tone for what would be a high-scoring affair.

The Bulldogs accumulated 631 total yards, with 477 through the air, exploiting Hornets’ defense to consistently move the ball downfield. Phoenix contributed four touchdown passes, while backup Ryan Stubblefield added another, underscoring the HBCU’s depth at the quarterback position.

South Carolina State is red-hot as it prepares to welcome North Carolina Central to Orangeburg on Thursday night.

Deondra Duehart led the ground attack with two rushing touchdowns, further energizing the homecoming crowd. Delaware State attempted to respond, but despite standout moments, including a 72-yard touchdown run by Jaden Sutton, they struggled to keep pace. SCSU’s defense also rose to the occasion, recording six sacks, stifling Delaware State’s drives, and securing a fumble recovery touchdown by Rashawn Washington.

As South Carolina State’s fans and alumni packed the stands, the festive atmosphere was as lively as the Bulldogs’ play on the field. This memorable homecoming game highlighted the pride and spirit of South Carolina State’s HBCU community, reinforcing their dominance within the MEAC and ensuring fans went home with a spectacular victory to celebrate.

SC State (5-2, 1-0) will look to regroup quickly, however, as it is set to take on North Carolina Central on Thursday night. The two teams are both unbeaten in conference play and the winner would have the leg-up in MEAC play.

Delaware State University alumnus Norman Oliver, Class of 1985, owns a construction company, builds affordable housing in Wilmington, and provides school transportation for homeless children. And for all that he has become in life, he credits DSU. A regular financial supporter of his HBCU, Mr. Oliver recently continued his giving by presenting his alma mater with a $200,000 donation. He presented the generous contribution – which is unrestricted – on Oct. 5 during the University’s biggest day of Homecoming Weekend with more than 15,000 in attendance.

After graduating from then-Delaware State College in 1985 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Social Work, the HBCU grad quickly developed into a business and community leader in his native Wilmington, Del.

In addition to owning Rock Solid Construction (commercial and residential), Mr. Oliver’s non-profit Our Youth, Inc. has built more than 30 affordable housing units in the Greater Wilmington area. His NOR Enterprises provides school transportation for homeless children.

He is a former Wilmington City Councilman and a past member of Delaware State University’s Board of Trustees. Over the years, he has also been well known in Wilmington for his “Stormin’ Norman Basketball League” and his Thanksgiving Turkey Giveaway.

Mr. Oliver said he began his leadership training at Delaware State College, where during his undergraduate years, he served as the President of the Freshman Class, the Men’s Council, and the DSC Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. As a senior, he culminated his student leadership by becoming the President of the DSC’s Student Government Association.

He said he was considered to be an “at-risk student,” but Delaware State College gave him an opportunity to pursue a degree that no other college would offer him.

“I was just a guy from the South Bridge Project (in Wilmington), but Del State helped me develop my leadership skills,” Mr. Oliver said. “Without Delaware State College/Delaware State University, I wouldn’t be where I am today.”

DSU President Tony Allen said Mr. Oliver’s homecoming donation is consistent with his faithful connection to his HBCU.

“Storm is my friend, but that is not why he gave such an historic contribution. He epitomizes our fundamental philosophy, ‘enter to learn, go forth to serve,’” Dr. Allen said of the homecoming donation. “He knows who we are and what we are trying to become, and is doing all he can to make sure we reach our goals. Whether it is $100 a month or a regular representation of this grand institution, that is what Alumni support is all about.”

As the HBCU football season heats up, four out of six MEAC programs are capitalizing on their bye weeks to recharge, while two teams prepare for one final non-conference test. With HBCU football powerhouse North Carolina Central University (NCCU) leading the way, the stakes are high as each game could determine the path to a conference title and a shot at postseason glory.

North Carolina Central (5-2, 1-0 MEAC)

NCCU is currently making waves in HBCU football, ranking No. 20 in the Stats Perform FCS Top-25 poll released on October 14, 2024 after a 68-0 win. This national recognition highlights their status as a top contender not just within the MEAC but across HBCU football. Head coach Trei Oliver shared how the bye week offers essential recovery time.

“The big thing is to get some rest. My players are young—they’re okay. I think my coaches probably need the rest more than the players,” Oliver said. “We’re gonna get these guys out of the building, let them spend time with their families.”

With two starting running backs nursing injuries, the rest period is crucial ahead of their October 26 homecoming showdown with Morgan State.

“The biggest thing is to reboot and come back fresh for next week… We’ve got a very tough Morgan State team coming in,” Oliver added. This matchup will be pivotal, as the Eagles aim to solidify their position as one of the best in MEAC and HBCU football.

Morgan State (2-4, 0-1 MEAC)

Morgan State enters its bye week eager to regroup following a challenging non-conference schedule. “This bye week comes right on time so we can get some guys back,” said head coach Damon Wilson. The Bears are focusing on fixing special teams issues and improving their third-down defense. Wilson is optimistic about his team’s chances against NCCU. “We’ll be ready to go for North Carolina Central’s homecoming,” he noted.

After a 23-0 loss to Robert Morris, Delaware State is taking full advantage of the break.

“I gave our guys some time off… we all needed some time away from each other,” said head coach Lee Hull.

Preparing for its October 26 game against South Carolina State, Hull emphasized the need for changes.

“Sometimes doing the same thing over and over becomes monotonous… so we’re trying to put some new energy into it,” Hull explained, hoping to spark the program’s momentum in the MEAC standings.

Norfolk State (2-6, 0-1 MEAC)

Norfolk State is also using its bye to recover.

“This bye week is needed… We’ve been going hard since June 23rd,” said head coach Dawson Odums. After a narrow 28-23 loss to Towson, the team will use the break to reset before hosting Howard for homecoming on October 26.

“They probably need a break from us, and we need a break from them to get healthy,” Odums admitted.

With NCCU leading the MEAC and positioning itself as one of the top teams in HBCU football, the October 26 games will be crucial in shaping the season’s trajectory. As Oliver put it, “If you come out tiptoeing, you’ll get knocked out.”

The race to Atlanta and a potential Celebration Bowl appearance is on, with every team seeking to capitalize on their preparation and rest.

Delaware State and Robert Morris will face off this weekend in what promises to be a competitive showdown. Both teams have something to prove as they look to gain momentum and turn their football seasons around. This game holds particular significance for Delaware State, as it seeks to build on early-season improvement and make a statement before conference play.

Storyline: Delaware State Looking to Rebound

Delaware State enters the matchup with a 1-5 record, but it has shown flashes of promise, particularly in the running game. Jaden Sutton leads the team with 553 rushing yards and five touchdowns, averaging 92.17 yards per game. Quarterback Marqui Adams has also been productive, passing for 1,024 yards and seven touchdowns. However, Delaware State’s defense has been a point of concern, allowing 400.8 yards per game and struggling to keep opponents out of the end zone.

Robert Morris, sitting at 2-3, will be looking to capitalize on Delaware State’s defensive vulnerabilities. Running back Tyvon Edmonds Jr. has been the focal point of their offense, rushing for 416 yards this season, while quarterback Anthony Chiccitt has thrown for 950 yards and seven touchdowns.

Delaware State, HBCU

Key Matchups:

Delaware State’s Rushing Attack vs. Robert Morris’ Defense
The Hornets’ rushing game, led by Jaden Sutton’s 6.6 yards per carry, will be critical. Robert Morris’ defense, which allows 180.8 rushing yards per game, will need to find a way to contain Sutton and slow down Delaware State’s ground game. If Sutton gets going, it could open up passing opportunities for Adams to exploit.

Robert Morris’ Offense vs. DSU’s Defense
DSU’s defense has allowed 31.67 points per game, and they’ll face a balanced Robert Morris offense. With Edmonds Jr. leading the ground attack and Chiccitt at quarterback, Robert Morris will look to challenge the DSU defense, which has allowed 218 passing yards per game. DSU will need to tighten up their secondary and generate pressure, as they have only managed two sacks this season.

This matchup has the potential to be a close contest. Delaware State’s ability to establish its run game and shore up their defense will be crucial, while Robert Morris will aim to exploit any defensive lapses. With both teams looking for a turning point, expect a hard-fought game that could come down to key plays on both sides of the ball.

Delaware State University (DSU) is making history by becoming the first Historically Black College and University (HBCU) to own and distribute a clothing line and private label brand of merchandise.

Starting this week, select DSU apparel and items will be available on Amazon Marketplace, Walmart.com and online, thanks to a groundbreaking partnership with Everything Collegiate, LLC, a black-owned business based in Atlanta, Georgia.

DSU’s private label will provide an expanded opportunity to control the design, quality, and variety of products that students, faculty, staff, alumni, and the community wear and purchase. The brand inventory will include various types of limited-edition merchandise that will only be available directly from the HBCU, and five percent of the sales will support student success by funding scholarships.

Everything Collegiate, owned and operated by Terance Harmon for over 20 years, holds more than 85 brand licenses for colleges, societies, and fraternities. As a primary vendor to over 60 colleges, including 39 HBCUs, it provides thousands of custom collegiate products including apparel, shoes, and giveaway items.

“This partnership marks a significant milestone in our journey,” said Harmon. “Our goal has always been to support and uplift HBCUs, and working with DSU has been a fulfilling step in that direction. I am excited to work with DSU on this historic move.”

Delaware State University initially partnered with Everything Collegiate on a launch of merchandise last year at the time of the University’s branding update.

Delaware State University, HBCU

“Thanks to our team, the designs were met with an overwhelmingly positive response,” said Dr. Dawn Mosley, Senior Associate Vice President of Marketing and Communications.

“Our students, faculty, staff, and alumni were thrilled with the new products and kept asking for more. The key difference was that we had control over the design process, working closely to ensure it resonated with our brand and audience. It made perfect sense, as we best know what our audience wants.”

The partnership will begin with a select choice of merchandise for which Everything Collegiate will manage the distribution while continuing to assist DSU in growing its private brand inventory in additional retail spaces and online. This will allow the University’s products to reach a wider audience while maintaining high standards of quality and authenticity.

“We’re no longer restricted to buying pre-made or mass-produced products that follow a standard design with our logo incorporated within,” Dr. Mosley said. “That’s not true ownership. We must protect what has taken over a century to build.”

However, existing relationships with retailers will continue to be a valuable resource for students and the DSU HBCU campus community to purchase everyday branded items.

“We are not competing with our campus stores or partners who sell merchandise with our brand. We value their contributions and the royalties they generate,” Dr. Mosley said. “It’s simply smart business to establish our own revenue stream from custom products. This also creates an exciting opportunity for our students and alumni to share their unique design ideas, which can further support scholarships for our students.”

The first round of student scholarships from initial product sales will be awarded in spring 2025.

Moving forward, new-arrival merchandise will now feature the Hornets ™ private-label branding. For early sales, click here or visit https://hbcudsu.com.

HBCU Delaware State’s late-game efforts fell just short in a 44-41 thriller against Campbell at Barker-Lane Stadium on September 28, 2024. The game was a back-and-forth battle, featuring explosive plays and dramatic lead changes.

Campbell struck first with a 51-yard touchdown pass from Chad Mascoe to Sincere Brown just over a minute into the game. Delaware State quickly responded, with Marqui Adams connecting with Kristian Tate for a 60-yard touchdown to tie the game at 7-7. Jaden Sutton then broke free for a 62-yard touchdown run, giving the Hornets a 14-7 lead. Campbell’s Connor Lytton added a field goal, and Delaware State extended its advantage with a 20-yard touchdown pass from Adams to Kyree Benton, making it 21-10.

Despite the back-and-forth scoring, Campbell clawed back with Mascoe hitting Aiden Valdez for a 5-yard touchdown, narrowing the HBCU squad’s lead to 21-17 at halftime.

Delaware State

In the second half, Adams found Malcolm Jefferies for a 4-yard touchdown, but Campbell answered with Brown’s second score of the day, tying the game at 28. A late touchdown pass from Adams to NyGhee Lolley and a 15-yard run by Sutton put Delaware State ahead 41-37 with under two minutes left.

However, Campbell drove 79 yards in just over a minute, with Brown securing his third touchdown of the day to give Campbell the final edge. Delaware State’s last-second field goal attempt missed, sealing the victory for Campbell.

Both teams showcased impressive offensive performances. Delaware State outgained Campbell in total offense, racking up 517 yards to Campbell’s 457. The Hornets dominated on the ground, rushing for 265 yards, led by Jaden Sutton’s 198-yard effort. Meanwhile, Campbell did most of their damage through the air, with Chad Mascoe throwing for 323 yards and four touchdowns. Despite the yardage advantage, Delaware State’s 13 penalties for 119 yards hindered their ability to capitalize on key opportunities, allowing Campbell to secure the late-game victory.

Sutton was the standout for the HBCU sqaud, rushing for 198 yards and two touchdowns in the narrow loss.

Delaware State football is off to a tough start in the 2024 season, but the Hornets have some standout players who could help them make a real impact in the MEAC. With a win against Sacred Heart and difficult losses to Wagner and Richmond, the team is showing glimpses of promise while still struggling with consistency. The big question remains: can Delaware State turn things around and make a mark in HBCU football this season?

With a 1-3 record so far, Delaware State has averaged 15.5 points per game while allowing 29.5 points to opponents. There’s work to be done, but key players on offense, defense, and special teams could turn the tide in Delaware State’s favor as they enter the heart of their HBCU and MEAC competition.

Offensive Standouts: Sutton and Adams

On the offensive side, running back Jaden Sutton has been a major bright spot for Delaware State. Sutton leads the team with 295 rushing yards on 50 carries, averaging 5.9 yards per carry and scoring 2 touchdowns. His ability to break long runs—his longest being 60 yards this season—makes him a dangerous weapon in HBCU football. If Delaware State is to compete against MEAC powerhouses, Sutton’s production will be key.

Quarterback Marqui Adams has shown flashes of his potential as well. Adams has thrown for 634 yards and 3 touchdowns while also rushing for 203 yards and 2 touchdowns. Though he’s been sacked 15 times, Adams’ dual-threat capability makes him difficult to defend. Coach Lee Hull has confidence in his growth, stating, “He went back to being a little more comfortable in the pocket.” Adams’ ability to stay poised will be critical if Delaware State is going to upset some of the stronger HBCU teams in the MEAC.

Receiving Targets: Tate, Lolley, and Benton

Delaware State’s passing attack is bolstered by wide receivers Kristian Tate, NyGhee Lolley, and Kyree Benton. Tate has 144 receiving yards and 1 touchdown on 11 catches, averaging 13.09 yards per catch. His ability to make big plays, like his 41-yard reception this season, will be important as the Hornets look to stretch the field.

Lolley has also been a consistent target, with 101 receiving yards on 11 catches, moving the chains when needed. Meanwhile, Benton has contributed 75 yards and a touchdown, averaging 15 yards per reception. These receivers provide quarterback Adams with multiple weapons as Delaware State continues to find offensive rhythm in HBCU play.

Defensive Standouts: Jimmison, Favors, and Garrett

While Delaware State’s offense has shown potential, it’s the defense that has kept them competitive in several games. Kahleef Jimmison, the team’s leading tackler, has 22 total tackles, including 2 tackles for loss. His aggressive play has helped slow down opponents and make key stops.

In the secondary, Wayne Favors III has been a game-changer with 2 interceptions this season, showing Delaware State’s ability to create turnovers. Christian Garrett has also been effective, recording 14 tackles and an interception, helping to limit big plays from opposing offenses. Coach Hull noted the defense’s growth, saying, “You saw a lot of improvement, a lot of growth, a lot of maturity in our football team.” The defense’s ability to force turnovers will be critical in HBCU competition.

Special Teams X-Factor: Nathan Wilson

Special teams often fly under the radar, but Nathan Wilson has been a consistent force for Delaware State. Wilson has converted all 8 of his extra-point attempts and 2 out of 4 field goals, with a long of 37 yards. His reliability in close games could give Delaware State an edge as they face tougher HBCU opponents in the MEAC.

Can Delaware State Pull Off the Upset in HBCU Football?

While the Hornets State has faced challenges in 2024, the team has shown signs of promise. With offensive playmakers like Sutton and Adams, a defense that creates turnovers, and consistent special teams play, the Hornets have the potential to upset some of the top HBCU teams in the MEAC.

Coach Hull summed it up best after their game against Richmond: “The biggest thing that we got out of there was no quit in this team.” If Delaware State can continue to build on this mentality and get more consistent across all phases of the game, they could make some noise in HBCU football this season.

The key will be finding that consistency and putting it all together. With a talented group of players and the right focus, Delaware State just might surprise a few teams in the MEAC.

Delaware State University Hornets are gearing up for a crucial test as they take on the Richmond Spiders this week. Following a tough 30-7 loss to Wagner, Delaware State is focused on correcting mistakes and getting back on track. Head Coach Lee Hull has been clear about the adjustments needed if the Hornets want to be competitive moving forward, particularly in the highly anticipated HBCU football season.

Learning from the Wagner Loss

After the loss to Wagner, Coach Hull was candid about his team’s shortcomings. “We made too many mistakes, especially in the red zone. We had two interceptions down there, and that really hurt us. We hadn’t turned the ball over in two games before that,” Hull explained. Despite moving the ball effectively, Delaware State couldn’t convert opportunities into points, and turnovers played a major role in the defeat. “Stats don’t win games. You have to capitalize, and we didn’t do that,” he added.

Hull emphasized that Wagner was more prepared than anticipated, and while Delaware State showed flashes of potential, they lacked the execution needed to win. Wagner took advantage of every Hornets mistake, something Hull knows they can’t afford to let happen again.

Back to the Basics for Delaware State

The focus this week for Delaware State is on getting back to fundamentals. “We’ve got to emphasize ball security,” Hull stated. “Our quarterback made a few bad throws, and we can’t afford those kinds of mistakes.” Hull believes the team has shown enough promise to be successful, but execution is critical.

On the defensive side, Hull also stressed the importance of avoiding mental lapses that allowed Wagner to make big plays. “We blitzed, and we were there, but we ran right by the play. We’ve got to clean that up,” he said. Tightening up the defense and ensuring the Hornets stay disciplined will be key as they face Richmond’s balanced attack.

DELAWARE STATE VS RICHMOND Richmond Spiders HBCU football

Richmond: A Tough Test Ahead

As Delaware State prepares to face the Richmond Spiders, Hull knows his team is in for a challenge. “Richmond’s defense is aggressive. They’re simple, but they do what they do really well,” Hull noted. Richmond has proven to be opportunistic on defense, forcing turnovers and shutting down opponents’ offensive efforts. Delaware State will need to prioritize ball security, especially since Richmond thrives on forcing errors.

Offensively, Richmond is led by quarterback Kyle Wickersham, a dual-threat who can make plays both on the ground and through the air. Hull is well aware of the threat Wickersham poses. “It starts and ends with him. If Wickersham plays well, they score a lot of points,” Hull said. The Hornets will need to find a way to apply pressure and make Wickersham uncomfortable if they want to contain Richmond’s offense.

What’s at Stake for Delaware State and HBCU Football

This matchup with the Richmond Spiders is a pivotal one for Delaware State as the Hornets look to bounce back and prove themselves in the competitive landscape of HBCU football. Coach Hull sees this game as a valuable opportunity to assess the team’s growth. “A true testament of a team is how you bounce back from adversity,” Hull said. For Delaware State, this game against Richmond serves as a measuring stick for how far the team has come and what adjustments still need to be made.

Ultimately, the focus for Delaware State is on eliminating mistakes and playing disciplined, fundamentally sound football. “We’ve got to get back to playing with hunger and focus,” Hull stressed. As Delaware State looks to improve, a strong performance against Richmond could set the tone for the remainder of their HBCU season. If the Hornets can clean up their mistakes and execute in critical moments, they have a chance to show that they belong in the conversation as a rising force in HBCU football.

Delaware State University has consistently been at or near the bottom of HBCU football in recent years, but it is looking to turn things around.

Delaware State University head coach Lee Hull continues to reshape the vision of culture change through the drastic changes he has made in leadership and the drive to succeed from last season to this season.

“We are going in the right direction for the culture change,” Hull said during the weekly MEAC coaches call. “The guys know what to expect and what the standards are and now they’re living up to that.”

Hull started coaching the Hornets prior to the 2023 season and ended the season with a 1-10 record. The team was picked to finish last in the MEAC this season.

Delaware State played Hawaii for its season opener Jaden Sutton led the Hornets by getting a touchdown, 43 receiving yards and carrying 4.7 yards as the HBCU played the FBS squad tough.

Delaware State University then picked up a poignant win over Sacred Heart University 17-15 in Week One.

Sutton led the Hornets rushing with 86 yards, spotlighted by a game-changing 39-yard rushing touchdown. Kristian Tate caught two passes for 43 yards and one touchdown.

Delaware State, Jaden Sutton

Delaware State University now has a 1-1 record, one of the few HBCU football programs with an FCS win.

Hull indicates he feels his team is moving in the right direction.

“The first year was a coach-driven team, now it’s a player-driven team where the players are taking control of the program,” Hull said. “That’s what you want, the most successful teams are player-driven teams and that’s where we’re going.”

As Delaware State University prepares for its first home game against Wagner College it is attempting to build confidence in itself.

“The players started feeling good about themselves and believing in themselves and believing in the coaches, believing in their players and everything that we’ve been doing,” Hull said.

The players have also been focusing on self-improvement and giving it their all while not worrying about the other team.

“So my biggest thing with our guys is to worry about the Hornets and getting one percent better each day,” said Hull. “Anybody can get beat if you go in with the wrong frame of mind.”

This game is arguably the Hornets’ most important of the season because they will get an opportunity to start a winning streak and keep going in the right direction for the culture change at this HBCU.

Delaware State football is back in action this week, hosting Wagner in a game that could give the Hornets their second straight win. After a close 17-15 victory over Sacred Heart, Delaware State is aiming to keep the momentum going. Wagner is coming off a tough 49-13 loss to Lehigh, but they’ll be eager to turn things around. This HBCU matchup promises to be an exciting game.

https://twitter.com/DSUHornets/status/1831834718645653688

During the bye week, Delaware State focused on improving its own game. Head coach Hall said the team used the time to self-scout and figure out what they need to do better. “It was all about the Hornets and getting better,” Hall said. This focus on self-improvement could give the Hornets the edge they need to beat Wagner.

In his second year, Coach Hall has shifted the team’s culture. The players are now leading the charge, which is a big change from last year. “Now, the players are taking control of the program,” Hall explained. This player-driven approach is helping Delaware State football grow stronger, a positive sign for this HBCU program.

Wagner had a rough outing last week, losing 49-13 to Lehigh. Their quarterback, Damien Mazil, threw for two touchdowns but also had three interceptions, which hurt the team. Despite this, Coach Hall warns that Wagner is a better team than their scoreline suggests. “They’re a good football team,” Hall noted. Delaware State can’t afford to take Wagner lightly.

For Delaware State to win, they need to focus on running the ball and avoiding turnovers. Running back Jaden Sutton was key in their last win, rushing for 86 yards and a touchdown against Sacred Heart. Quarterback Marqui Adams will also need to stay calm under pressure. On defense, veterans like Mario Goings and Charles Brown Jr. will look to disrupt Wagner’s offense.

This game is important for Delaware State. As Coach Hall mentioned, the Hornets haven’t won two games in a row in a long time. A win here would show real progress for this HBCU football program. For Wagner, it’s a chance to bounce back after their loss. Both teams will be hungry for the win, but if Delaware State can stick to its game plan, they have a strong chance of coming out on top.

Closing Quote:
Coach Hall said it best: “It’s all about the Hornets and how we prepare each day.”

Hawaii football is set to kick off its season against Delaware State University – an HBCU on the far east coast of the continental United States.

It’s a 10-and-a-half hour flight for the HBCU squad, one that it was set to leave on Tuesday morning. But the trip did not go as planned and Delaware State missed its flight to Honolulu, according to multiple reports.

Delaware State officials say they are “working on a plan,” after a snafu on the way to the airport caused the missed flight, according to the Star-Advertiser.

Update: According to CBS Sports, bus company takes blame for Delaware State’s missed flight.

During Monday’s weekly MEAC coaches football call, Delaware State head coach Lee Hull talked about preparing for the lengthy trip, stating that it was providing some logistical challenges.

“We’re we’re actually out of practice right now. So we get these guys some time off and pack and get ready to go because we leave at four in the morning,” Hull said.

HBCU, Delaware State

There is a six-hour difference between Dover and Honolulu, so the HBCU squad was leaving Tuesday for a Saturday game against Hawaii football.

Delaware State is the first HBCU team to make the trip to play Hawaii since Grambling State did so during the Eddie Robinson days. DSU worked steadfastly to prepare for the trip, but even on Monday, Hull hinted at how big of an undertaking actually getting it done would be.

“Still, today people coming in – ‘Oh we got an issue here, we got an issue there. What are we doing here?” Hull elaborated. “You know, so that last minute stuff that that comes up because of the the long flight. You know we got to drive to JFK which is three hours away. And then we got a direct flight, which is another 10.5 hours. So yeah, but we’re looking forward to it.”

Hull said that despite the issues, he was looking forward to getting his team to Hawaii and taking in some cultural things, such as Pearl Harbor.

“I told the guys today in a team meeting – ‘you’re not well only representing yourself and Delaware State University, but you’re representing the whole HBCU community,” Hull said. “So it’s it’s a big responsibility for us.”
