Online rumors have been popping up this week that Blake Harper, a diamond-in-the-rough college basketball star from Howard University, is ready to join Maryland basketball.

But you can’t believe everything you hear — or see the internet.

The 6’7 wing who was basically being recruited (or tampered with, depending on how you view it) for half the season after breaking out on the scene at Howard University, recently responded to one such rumor. A Twitter account of Rob Reinhart tweeted that Blake Harper was going to commit to Maryland. The tweet quickly spread like wildfire, and has more than 325k views and sent HBCU basketball followers into a tizzy. And his wasn’t alone.

Harper, meanwhile, has yet to announce any type of commitment. He did respond to the Reinhart tweet with a meme that suggested that the information posted was not accurate.

The Washington, D.C. native was lightly recruited prior to coming to Howard, but quickly became as force for the Washington, DC – based HBCU.

Harper shot 44.7% from the field (182-for-407) and displayed a solid three-point stroke, connecting on 40 of his 99 attempts for a 40.4 percent success rate. He was also reliable at the free-throw line, making 221 of 268 attempts, an impressive 82.5%. Harper was active defensively, recording 31 steals and contributing on the boards with 197 total rebounds. His playmaking ability was evident with 110 assists, while maintaining strong defensive discipline with only five foul-outs.

Harper’s numbers weren’t only outstanding for HBCU basketball and the MEAC but across the NCAA as well. Harper was the 28th ranked scorer in all of Division I basketball, the only HBCU player ranked in the top 50.

While Maryland basketball may be on Blake Harper’s list, it doesn’t appear that he has made a commitment yet.

WASHINGTON – Junior forward Zennia Thomas (Cleveland) scored 13 of her game-high 19 points to lead four Bison in double figures as the Howard University women’s basketball team defeated Siena College, 72-62, in the first round of the Postseason Women’s National Invitational Tournament (WNIT) in Burr Gymnasium on the HBCU campus of Howard University.

The game was historic for the Bison, who registered their first WNIT win in school history. It was evident from the opening tip that both teams were a bit anxious as they traded missing layups and turned the ball over. Siena set the tone by extending a 20-17 lead at the end of one quarter into a 36-30 lead at intermission.

Siena (17-14) took the lead courtesy of the play of their all-conference selection, Teressa Seppala. Seppala led the way with 11 points, eight rebounds, and some dominance on the offensive glass (13 offensive rebounds) for second-shot opportunities. The Bison had trouble finding the range, missing 25-of-39 shots, including 2-of-13 from beyond the arc.

Howard made some adjustments on the defensive end, turning them over while resulting in an 11-0 run near the end of the third quarter. Thomas, who was named to the MEAC All-Tournament Team, fueled the drive with her quick post moves and soft mid-range jumpers.

Graduate forward Kaiya Creek (Seat Pleasant, Md.) came off the bench to score 11 points for her HBCU, six of them during a run when she hit back-to-back trey balls to help Howard close out the quarter with a 54-47 lead, heading into the fourth quarter. Siena was able to cut the lead to two points on three different occasions, but each time, Thomas and HBCU All-American guards Destiny Howell (Queens, N.Y.) and Saniyah King (Washington) had an answer.

HBCU Women's National Invitational Tournament Howard University

Down the stretch, the Howard defense made key plays, including Thomas’ two steals and two blocks by junior forward Nile Miller (Haddonfield, N.J.). Thomas added seven rebounds to her stat sheet. King rebounded from a subpar tournament performance to score 16 points, five assists, and no turnovers. Howell contributed 11 points, five rebounds, and three assists in a solid all-around effort.

It must be noted that the Bison bench outscored their opponent 19-8, with Creek, senior guard Nyla Cooper (Fayetteville, N.C.), and sophomore guard Janyah Bohanon (Cleveland) combining for all of their bench points. Siena was led by Seppala with a double-double (17 points & 13 rebounds), Ahniiysha Jackon (17 points), and Anajah Brown with a double-double & 12 points & 13 rebounds).

Howard moves on to the next round of the Women’s National Invitational Tournament at the College of Charleston on Monday (March 24). Tipoff at 7 p.m.

The MEAC Women’s Basketball Championship is set, and for the fifth straight season, Howard University will compete for the conference title against an HBCU rival. Standing in their way? A familiar foe—Norfolk State, the two-time defending champions looking to cement their place as an HBCU basketball dynasty.

These two MEAC powerhouses have faced off in the championship three times before, with Norfolk holding a 2-1 edge. The Spartans are chasing a historic three-peat, while Howard is trying to break through after falling short the last two years.

“It’s like your sister—you live with them every day, but they just annoy you so much,” Howard head coach Ty Grace said about the rivalry. “We know each other inside and out. It’s about who steps up.”?

With a trip to the NCAA Tournament on the line, expect a high-intensity battle between two teams that know each other well.

Season Recap: Norfolk’s Dominance vs. Howard’s Resilience

 • Norfolk State (28-4, 14-0 MEAC): The Spartans ran through the MEAC undefeated, sweeping Howard in the regular season (69-53 at home, 68-56 on the road)??. Their defense has been their calling card, allowing just 56.6 points per game.
 • Howard (20-10, 12-2 MEAC): The Bison are making their fifth straight MEAC championship appearance but haven’t won since 2022. Their only two conference losses this season came against Norfolk, and they’re eager to flip the script?.

Destiny Howell, MEAC, Howard University
Howard University’s Destiny Howell takes a 3-pointer.

Players to Watch

 • Howard’s Destiny Howell (15.1 PPG): One of the MEAC’s top scorers, Howell knows the stakes. “I wanted to be known as a better passer, a better leader. Now it’s time to show it,” she said?.
 • Norfolk’s Diamond Johnson (19.1 PPG, 6.1 RPG): A lethal scorer who thrives in big moments?.
 • Norfolk’s Kierra Wheeler (15.3 PPG, 9.0 RPG): A dominant post presence aiming to lead the Spartans to three straight titles. “We’ve done it two years in a row, but now we want to make it three,” Wheeler said?.

Game Plan: Howard’s Ball Control vs. Norfolk’s Pressure Defense

If Howard wants to win, they must limit turnovers. Norfolk forces nearly 22 turnovers per game, and in their two regular-season meetings, Howard struggled to handle the pressure?.

“We have to be smarter with the ball,” Grace said. “They thrive off our mistakes. If we can play our game, we can win.”?

For Norfolk State, the formula is simple: high-pressure defense and rebounding dominance. They are one of the top defensive teams in the country and rarely give up second-chance points.

“We don’t take possessions off,” Norfolk head coach Larry Vickers said. “We’ve built our program on defense, and we’re not going to change that now.”?

A Historic MEAC Showdown

This game is about more than just a title—it’s about legacy.

For Norfolk State, a victory would make them three-time MEAC champions, solidifying their dynasty.

For Howard, this is a chance to prove they can win on the big stage and avoid another heartbreaking finish.

“We’ve been here before. Now, we need to finish,” Howell said?.

A five-time finalist vs. a team chasing a three-peat.

Two HBCU rivals. One MEAC championship on the line.

Who will come out on top?

]]>
NORFOLK, Va. — HBCU basketball is facing a new reality with the rise of the transfer portal and NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) deals. Recruiting has become more competitive, and retaining top talent is harder than ever. North Carolina Central head coach LeVelle Moton has been vocal about these challenges.

Speaking after North Carolina Central’s thrilling last-second upset win over Delaware State in the MEAC Tournament, Moton didn’t hold back. “In this portal era, in this NIL era, things have changed. What required you to be a good coach five years ago? That ain’t the climate now,” he said.

The Impact of NIL and the Transfer Portal on HBCU Basketball

Before the transfer portal, college basketball players had to sit out a year if they switched schools. Now, they can play immediately, which has led to a major shift in recruiting. At the same time, NIL allows athletes to earn money, and bigger programs with larger financial resources can offer more lucrative deals.

“Whoever got the most money just buys a team, assembles a team. You got 14 new guys learning each other,” Moton said. This new era has made it tough for HBCUs to keep their best players from being recruited by Power Four schools with bigger NIL opportunities.

HBCU Basketball Stars Moving Up

Many standout HBCU players have transferred to larger programs in search of better NIL deals and more exposure. Some recent examples include:

 • Steve Settles III (Howard to Temple)
 • Elijah Hawkins (Howard to Minnesota to Texas Tech)
 • Jamari Thomas (Norfolk State to South Carolina)
 • Duncan Powell (NCCU to Georgia Tech)
 • Blake Harper? (Howard) – A rising freshman star already drawing interest from Power Four programs.

For HBCU basketball, this means programs must constantly rebuild their rosters, as top players often leave before fully developing. “Five years ago, we could develop a guy for three or four years,” an HBCU coach told HBCU Gameday. “Now, he might be gone after one season.”

The Looming House v. NCAA Settlement and What It Means for HBCUs

The House v. NCAA settlement could change recruiting even more by forcing schools to directly pay players. This raises big questions for HBCU basketball:

 • Will HBCUs have the budget to compete with larger schools?
 • Will Power Four programs continue to dominate recruiting by offering salaries?
 • Can HBCUs find new ways to leverage NIL to attract top talent?

The Future of HBCU Basketball in the NIL Era

To stay competitive, HBCU basketball programs must adapt to this evolving landscape. Coaches are no longer just developing players—they are rebuilding their teams every season and navigating the NIL market.

“We can sit here and complain, or we can adjust,” Moton said. “The game is different now. The best coaches aren’t just coaching—they’re adapting.”

Thursday night’s hero for North Carolina Central was Isaac Parson, a graduate transfer from DII HBCU Winston-Salem State.

Even for Moton, the transfer portal giveth, and the transfer portal taketh away.

With players like Blake Harper gaining national attention, the focus is on whether HBCUs can hold onto their stars or if Power Four programs will continue to pull them away. One thing is clear: NIL and the transfer portal have forever changed HBCU basketball.

HBCU phenom and Howard University freshman guard Blake Harper entered his first MEAC tournament post-game press conference, playing and sounding like a college basketball veteran instead of a freshman ending his first year.
Harper, the newly-minted MEAC Player of The Year, put up a valiant effort in his team’s 91-90 loss to Morgan State.

The 6’7 guard scored 27 points and grabbed eight rebounds while playing 37 minutes in the MEAC Tournament semifinal. He keyed a run that saw Howard go from a 10-point deficit to a one-point lead on a 3-pointer from teammate Cameron Shokley-Okeke with 16 seconds remaining. Morgan State would answer with a Kameron Hobbs layup to re-take the lead with 10 seconds to go. Howard was unable to answer and saw its season end with its first loss in the MEAC Tournament since 2022.

“Just trying to do anything to make my team win. You know, my team is is finding the right spots, and being able to execute,” Harper said of his performance and his team’s late run. “But we came up short.

The Boy Wonder showed why he was named the conference’s top player as well as its top rookie, a first in the 54-year history of the HBCU conference. He scored better than his average of 19.3 points and 6.3 rebounds in the loss. Despite his obvious talent, many people questioned whether or not he should have won the honor due to Howard having just 12 wins on the season. Those doubters may or may not have been convinced, but that doesn’t matter to Blake Harper.

“I’m not really worried about the outside noise. But player of the year…like I work. I worked my tail off all season,” Harper said after the game. “That’s what came with it. But to me, I just wanted to come out and win. But we came up short.”

Harper has gone from a towel boy — literally — to possibly the second most talked about freshman in college basketball (behind Duke’s Cooper Flagg) .

“Nobody really believed in us when the preseason player of the year went down and I still feel like we broke the barriers for sure,” Blake reflected. “And personally, I feel like nobody believed in me — just coming in here — other than our Howard University circle, especially this man on my right and really took me in when I was a chubby senior. And really having no experience playing on this big stage. And I trusted him and got me where I’m at now. And I’m just forever grateful for the coaching staff of the program.”

Harper’s coach, Kenneth Blakeney couldn’t say enough about his superstar freshman. His words mostly remarked who Harper is as a young man moreso than as a basketball star.

Blake Harper, College Basketball, HBCU, Howard University

“I think for me, it’s the character of who he is, is huge. When you talk about how all the things that he’s accomplished on the court, the type of young man that he is allows him the opportunity to be able to do that. His nuclear household family, and the the way that his loving family raised him. The love and support that the community gives and the love and support that the DC gives him.”

Blake Harper’s size and production have made him the constant target of the financial apparatus that surrounds college basketball in 2025. With the NIL and year-to-year transfer portal, Harper will have every chance to transfer out of Howard and play at some bigger name basketball school for more money. That means everyone from opposing coaches to agents to plane ‘ole leeches see themselves with something to gain from a player that was on very few people’s radar a few years ago.

“I watched him handle things that were very challenging in his life the right way. But he’s also handled success the right way. And going from a person that was undervalued and under looked the majority of his life in the basketball space to having everything that he’s worked his butt off and positioned himself for,” Blakeney said. “He’s never changed. So that’s a great testament to the people in his life, that have supported him, raised and loved him and guided him the right way. He’s, to his credit, accepted all of those things. And is a wonderful young man.”

The chubby kid that no coach wanted and was as recently as last summer a towel boy is now one of the most sought-after players in college basketball. Harper hasn’t said definitively whether or not he’ll stay at the HBCU for another year or hit the transfer portal. He wasn’t asked about it in the post-game press conference at the Scope. But he and his teammates — seniors Marcus Dockery and Anwar Gill — were asked to give final remarks.

Harper finished his freshman season with a bang. (Photo courtesy: MEAC)

The Boy Wonder sounded just as contemplative and reflective as his older teammates as he spoke last.

“For me personally. It’s just a lot of personal growth. And I remember, like, one of the first practices, Coach took me to the side and said, you got to be able to receive your blessings. And I really just been keeping them in my mind throughout the whole season for real. Just to see our team fight, fight, fight and never really give up and never pay attention to what people say bad about us.

“I mean, I’m just so proud of my guys and I’d do it again. I’d do it again in a heartbeat,” he said with the undertone of a man at the crossroads.

“I mean, this was a legendary, ride,” Harper said. “I’ll never forget it — for sure.”

And so, The Boy Wonder went back into the dark night with his college basketball fate only known to him.

The MEAC Tournament is set for a thrilling showdown between two HBCU basketball powerhouses, (4) Howard University and (5) Morgan State. This matchup is a battle of contrasting styles—Howard has the MEAC’s best player, while Morgan State boasts superior depth. With the Bison chasing a three-peat, the Bears are looking to upset their rivals and advance.

Howard Bison

Strengths:

 • Blake Harper (MEAC Player & Rookie of the Year)The star freshman leads the MEAC in scoring at 19.3 PPG and can take over games single-handedly.
 • Championship experience – Howard has won back-to-back MEAC titles and knows how to perform under pressure.
 • Perimeter shooting – When Marcus Dockery and others find their rhythm, the Bison become a dangerous offensive team.

Weaknesses:

 • Lack of depth – Outside of Harper, offensive production can be streaky.
 • Rebounding issues – Howard struggles against teams with strong frontcourt presence.

Blake Harper, HBCU, Howard University, MEAC

Morgan State Bears

Strengths:

 • Balanced scoring attack – Unlike Howard, Morgan State spreads the ball around and has multiple scoring options.
 • Tough defense – The Bears apply relentless pressure and are one of the best defensive teams in the MEAC.
 • Rebounding edge – Morgan State is a strong rebounding team, which could be the key to controlling the pace of the game.

Weaknesses:

 • No dominant scorer – Kameron Hobbs is a First-Team All-MEAC selection, but Morgan State lacks a true go-to offensive star.
 • Free-throw struggles – If the game is tight late, Morgan State’s free-throw shooting could be a liability.

HBCU Key Matchups & X-Factors

 • Blake Harper vs. Morgan State’s Defense – The Bears must slow down Harper, who is capable of carrying Howard to victory.
 • Kameron Hobbs vs. Howard’s Backcourt – If Hobbs dictates the tempo, Morgan State’s depth could wear Howard down.
 • X-Factor: Howard’s Supporting Cast – If Marcus Dockery and company step up offensively, Howard becomes tough to beat. If not, Morgan State’s depth could prevail.

Prediction & Outlook

Howard has the best individual player, if not the best in HBCU basketball, but Morgan State has the better all-around team. If Harper gets enough help, Howard University could continue its reign as the MEAC’s top HBCU basketball program. However, if Morgan State controls the boards and limits Harper’s impact, the Bears could pull off an upset.

Who wins: The star-powered Bison or the balanced Bears?

Destiny Howell’s triumphant return to the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Tournament has been a beacon of resilience for Howard University’s women’s HBCU basketball team. After being sidelined for the 2023-2024 season due to an ACL injury. Howell’s comeback game in the opening round against Delaware State has invigorated the Bison and underscored her indomitable spirit and unwavering commitment to the game.

Starting things off right

In the 2025 MEAC Tournament quarterfinals, Howard University, seeded second, faced off against the seventh-seeded Delaware State Hornets. The Bison dominated the game, securing a decisive 85-39 victory. Howell led the charge with a stellar performance, contributing 15 points and 3 assists. Her shooting accuracy was noteworthy, hitting 4 of 7 attempts from the field and a perfect 5-for-5 from the free-throw line

Throughout the season, Howell has consistently demonstrated her prowess on the court. In a recent matchup against South Carolina State, she delivered a game-high 21 points, leading four Bison players who scored in double figures. This performance was instrumental in Howard’s commanding 89-39 victory over SC State

Howell’s contributions have not gone unnoticed. She was honored with a spot on the 2025 All-MEAC First Team, a testament to her skill and dedication. This accolade is particularly significant given her previous recognition as the 2023 MEAC Player of the Year and the 2022 MEAC Tournament Most Outstanding Player

Reflecting on her HBCU basketball journey, Howell expressed gratitude and determination. “Just last year I didn’t have this experience of being out there on the floor,” she said during the post game presser. “It feels good to be back, it feels really good to be back, just being in that dark place, not being able to play basketball was really tough fore me the entire year.”

HBCU Howard University Destiny Howell

As the Bison advance in the MEAC Tournament, Destiny Howell’s leadership and performance will be pivotal. Her journey from injury to excellence embodies the spirit of perseverance and the pursuit of greatness within HBCU women’s basketball.

Howard University star Blake Harper is earning attention in and out of the HBCU world as his standout freshman season continues.

The 6’8 freshman has been stellar all season, and Tuesday afternoon he was named MEAC Player of the Year.

Blake Harper had an outstanding freshman season at Howard University, leading the team in scoring with an impressive 19.3 points per game. Starting all 31 games, he quickly became a key player, averaging 34.4 minutes per contest and showcasing his scoring efficiency with a 44.6 percent field goal percentage, 40.8 percent from beyond the arc, and 82 percent from the free-throw line.

His work as a freshman has brought him national attention — not just from the media or HBCU circles. Harper has drawn attention from across the basketball world from opposing coaches and agents looking to poach him. That’s the reality of the new world of college basketball where agents and NIL — along with a year-to-year-transfer portal — mean a player like Blake Harper will have plenty of suitors for his services.

“Agents try to say, ‘Oh yeah, take a call with me, I’m here for you,’” Blake Harper told Sports Illustrated last week. “Just hearing different people that had never met me talking to me like they were my big brother and like, I should trust them with my life and my financial records. It’s kind of funny to hear it coming from somebody I’ve never met before and not knowing [any] background. You don’t know what they could do with your life.”

Harper’s breakout performance came on February 1, 2025, against Hampton, where he dropped a season-high 35 points, fueled by an incredible 20-for-22 showing from the free-throw line. He also demonstrated his all-around game with a season-best 13 rebounds and 10 assists against Virginia-Lynchburg on December 11, 2024. His ability to contribute across multiple categories was evident, averaging 6.3 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game.

Blake Harper, HBCU, Howard University

Throughout the season, Harper delivered consistent scoring outputs, surpassing 30 points three times and recording double figures in all but one game. His most efficient performance came against Delaware State on January 4, 2025, where he shot 10-of-12 from the field, including 3-of-4 from three-point range, for 34 points.

As a freshman, Harper established himself as one of the top scorers in the conference, setting the stage for a promising collegiate career. The question on is, how much longer will he’ll be at the HBCU.

“Howard, what they’ve done for my son, I can’t put a dollar value on,” his father, Snupe Harper told SI. “All the things that they’re doing, it’s extra and above and beyond for him to be able to feel comparable to some of his friends that are going to these Power 5 schools. It’s a delicate, delicate juggle between wanting money and wanting to play. At Howard right now, we’re getting really good competition and we’re able to show all of our skills.”

Howard is set to take on Morgan State on Thursday in the semifinals of the MEAC Tournament.

WASHINGTON – Spring may be a little over a week away, but the focus of Howard University’s football team is set on the fall as the squad has released its 2025 HBCU football schedule. The announcement came Tuesday.

The slate of games on the football schedule, which includes a Labor Day Weekend clash with Florida A&M University, the battle for “the real HU” against Hampton University and the second of a two-game series with Tennessee State University, looks to make for an exciting season for the Bison, who hopes to rebound from last season’s 4-8 (1-4 MEAC) finish.

The Bison will open the 2025 season against Florida A&M in the Orange Blossom Classic on Saturday (August 30). The two teams played in the inaugural 1933 Orange Blossom Classic and have faced off 40 times over the last century in regular and postseason play. The game, the Bison’s first time back in the Orange Blossom Classic since 1974, will be played at the Hard Rock Stadium, home to the NFL’s Miami Dolphins. The game is the first of the three consecutive weeks when the Bison play in NFL stadiums. On September 6, the Bison will travel to Philadelphia to play Temple University at Lincoln Financial Field (Philadelphia Eagles), followed by September 13 when Howard takes on Morehouse College in the HBCU NY Classic at MetLife Stadium (New York Jets and New York Giants).

Participating in high-profile games like the Orange Blossom and HBCU NY Classics or facing programs like Temple on their home field do a lot for helping to raise the profile of Howard football, in general, and HBCU football overall, said Bison Head Coach Larry Scott.

“We are excited about the upcoming season and the opportunity for our student-athletes to be on big stages to demonstrate the competitive excellence that we know they are capable of,” Scott said. “We have been diligently working during this offseason and will continue to do so this spring to ensure that our team is ready to make our alumni and fans proud. We are determined to bring a championship mindset each week and bring a title home.”

The second half of the 2025 schedule features fierce contests against Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) rivals, including Delaware State University and Norfolk State University, both now led by first-year coaches, who had electrifying NFL careers – DeSean Jackson and Mike Vick, respectively.

The Bison, who were back-to-back MEAC champions (2022 & 2023) and participated in the 2023 Celebration Bowl in Atlanta, have been dedicating a lot of time to off-season training. The public will be able to get a glimpse of what they can expect once the regular season starts during the annual Spring Game, which will take place at Greene Stadium Saturday (April 12).

Howard Director of Athletics Kery Davis says that Bison fans have a lot to look forward to this season, from the away games in Miami and the New York metropolitan area to a visit to Nashville, where they will be the homecoming opponent for Tennessee State University. The schedule will help reinforce Howard’s commitment to providing a high-quality experience for student-athletes while showing the public that Howard students are capable of excelling both in and outside of the classroom.

“For the last several years, Howard University has seen a renaissance within our athletics programs, with our student-athletes winning championships in multiple sports,” Davis said. “Of course, we are proud of Howard’s rich and highly respected history of academic and leadership excellence. But we also have a phenomenal athletics program with incredibly talented student-athletes and this schedule will allow people in different regions to see the caliber of student-athletes we have and hopefully inspire students to consider coming to Howard where they can get a great education and compete in high-quality NCAA competition.”

Howard University, the nation’s only historically Black college and university (HBCU) with an NCAA Division I swim program, has once again made history. On February 23, 2025, the Howard Bison men’s swimming and diving team clinched the Northeast Conference (NEC) Championship title for the second time in three years. The four-day competition in Geneva, Ohio, saw the Bison maintain a consistent lead, culminating in a decisive victory secured by their performance in the final event, the 400 Free Relay.

The championship meet showcased exceptional performances across various events. In the 200 Free Relay, graduate student Tristan Stevens, seniors Tai Afrik and Darin Johnson, and junior Taj Benton delivered a strong performance, finishing with a time of 1:21.88.

The Bison divers also made a significant impact, sweeping the podium in the 3-meter dive. Senior Zay Swilley led the group with a score of 270.55, followed by NEC standout Jordan Walker with 242.84 points, and freshman Zion Wilson securing third place with 233.90 points.

Howard University’s swimming program holds a unique position in collegiate athletics. Since 2016, following the discontinuation of North Carolina A&T University’s women’s swim team, Howard has been the sole HBCU offering an NCAA Division I swimming and diving program.

HBCU Howard University swim

The program has a rich history of promoting diversity in aquatics and challenging stereotypes about Black swimmers. Under the leadership of Head Coach Nic Askew, the team has seen a resurgence, breaking numerous school records and achieving significant milestones, including their first conference title in over three decades in 2023.

The 2025 NEC Championship victory not only underscores the team’s dedication and hard work but also highlights Howard University’s commitment to excellence in athletics. As the only HBCU with a swim program, the Bison continues to inspire and pave the way for future generations of Black swimmers, demonstrating that with determination and support, they can excel at the highest levels of competition.

On March 13-15, several Bison will travel to Ocala, Fla., for the CSCAA National Invitational Championships.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The American Council of Education (ACE) today announced that Howard University has been conferred a Research One (R1) Carnegie Classification, indicating “very high research spending and doctorate production.” R1 is widely considered to be the highest research activity classification among colleges and universities in the United States. Howard University is the only historically Black college or university (HBCU) that has achieved the R1 designation.

“Howard University’s achievement of R1 status demonstrates our research capacity and reaffirms our deep commitment to tackling society’s most pressing questions through cutting-edge scholarship and technological innovation,” said Howard University President Ben Vinson III, Ph.D. “As a leader in the evolution of next generation HBCUs, we are dedicated to ensuring that the benefits of discovery and progress reach all communities, including those historically overlooked and underrepresented. Through pioneering solutions and the strategic use of emerging technologies, we are shaping a future where knowledge drives inclusive prosperity and lasting impact.”

According to ACE, on average in a single year, R1 institutions “spend at least $50 million on research & development and produce at least 70 research doctorates.” Howard exceeded the criteria in both categories.

“Howard’s track-record of research prowess and success are evident in the numbers,” said Bruce A. Jones, Ph.D., Howard University professor and senior vice president for research. “In Fiscal Year 2023, the most recent evaluation year in the classification cycle, the University’s productivity was significantly higher than the R1 base criteria, recording just under $85 million in research expenditures and awarding 96 doctorates in an array of fields, including the most doctorates awarded to Black students at any college or university in America.”

The UARC led by Howard is the Research Institute for Tactical Autonomy.
 • The Howard University Center for Sickle Cell Disease was the first center in the nation devoted to the disease.
 • Howard is one of only six institutions worldwide selected as academic partners of the Center for Power Optimization of Electro-Thermal Systems, which conducts groundbreaking research in power density to make electric mobility more practical and efficient.
 • Howard’s Moorland-Spingarn Research Center (MSRC) is the nation’s largest and most comprehensive repository of books, documents, and ephemera on the global Black experience.
 • Howard hosts the Department of Defense Center of Excellence in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, sponsored by the U.S. Army, in which it leads interdisciplinary research in collaboration with other leading universities and industrial partners across the nation.
 • The Howard University Center for African Studies is the only comprehensive National Resource Center (NRC) at an HBCU, as designated by the U.S. Department of Education. NRC’s lead research in international studies, languages, and international affairs.
 • The Howard University Cancer Center is the only cancer center at an HBCU that provides a full range of cancer treatment services and trains the next generation of oncology professionals and cancer researchers.

Howard University running back Jarrett Hunter has been making moves on and off the field as the HBCU star prepares for the next chapter of his football career.

Hunter has been grinding in Durham at the Duke Sports Performance Institute, fine-tuning his skills ahead of the HBCU Legacy Bowl. The game, set for February in New Orleans, gives top HBCU prospects a platform to showcase their talents in front of professional scouts. For Hunter, it’s another opportunity to prove he belongs at the next level.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity. I’m grateful for the people who put that game together because a lot of HBCU guys don’t get a shot,” Hunter said. “I know I’m there for a reason, and I feel like one of the best guys there. I just gotta go out there and show that.”

The road to this moment has been paved with hard work, sacrifice, and focus. Hunter, who is represented TLS Sports Agency and training with Empower Athlete Strategies, was a key part of Howard’s resurgence in recent years. When he arrived at the MEAC school, the Bison hadn’t seen much success in a long time. But along with his teammates, he helped change that narrative.

“When I first came in, we knew we had to change things around here,” Hunter said. “The culture kind of got used to just losing and being okay with it, but that wasn’t what we wanted to do. So, in our time there, we were able to get to two conference championships and leave something better than we found it.”

Hunter finished his Howard University career with a total of 2,705 yards and 22 touchdowns on 580 carries while being a part of a running back room that went three deep.

Jarrett Hunter’s versatility is banking on his versatility as a running back to set him apart. He’s not just a bruiser between the tackles—he’s got hands, too. The former basketball player credits his time on the hardwood for helping develop his skill set.

“A lot of the movements in basketball—crossovers, hand-eye coordination—helped me in football,” he said. “My hands out of the backfield, that’s one thing I pride myself on. I maybe had one fumble in my career. Protecting the ball and being able to catch is something I take seriously.”

As he gears up for the HBCU Legacy Bowl, Hunter has leaned on past teammates for guidance. Last year, former Howard University running back Ian Wheeler went through this same process before an impressive training camp with the Chicago Baers. Hunter has been picking his brain about what to expect.

“I was on him as soon as he got there,” Hunter said with a smile. “Just asking him how things worked, how the game is different, what the coaching is like.

Beyond the game itself, Hunter’s motivation runs deep. His family has been his rock, and he sees this journey as a way to give back to them.

“You can never repay your parents, but one way to try is by making them proud,” he said. “Getting my degree already did that, but how much more can I do? How much more can I show them I appreciate everything they did for me?”

As NFL teams evaluate prospects, Hunter hopes they’ll see more than just his ability on the field. He prides himself on being a team-first guy, a leader, and someone who genuinely cares about the people around him.

“I’m not a guy who says a lot, but any of my old teammates will tell you—I’m the guy who will talk to you outside the facility. I’m a guy you can count on,” Hunter said. “I bring energy when it’s the right time, and I’m just a real personal guy you can talk to.”

With the HBCU Legacy Bowl on the horizon, Hunter is locked in and ready to make the most of his opportunity.

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Trail Blazers and Alaska Airlines are once again teaming up to transform this year’s HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) to the Pros Night into a celebration of the HBCU experience across the Portland community. Members of the Howard University Showtime Marching Band and Auxiliary Units will fly to Portland, courtesy of Alaska Airlines, for a weekend of community interaction, celebration, and education. The highlight of the weekend will be the annual HBCU to the Pros game on February 22 when the Trail Blazers take on the Charlotte Hornets.

In alignment with the NBA, the Trail Blazers prioritize highlighting the traditions and impact of HBCUs and the contributions of Black leaders who belong to historically Black fraternities and sororities and alumni of Historically Black Colleges and Universities. HBCUs have served as cultural and intellectual hubs, fostering a sense of identity, pride, and leadership development. They have contributed significantly to Black culture, literature, arts, and sciences and we are excited to showcase those contributions to Rip City throughout the weekend. As the NBA team the farthest from an HBCU, bringing the HBCU experience to Portland invites the local community, specifically Black youth, to get a taste of the rich history, traditions, and culture that HBCUs embody.

HBCUs play an important role in Alaska’s commitment to contributing in a meaningful way to the communities it serves. Driven by the belief that education has the power to transform the lives of young people, Alaska supports programs like United Negro College Fund (UNCF), the nation’s largest and most effective minority education organization. To date, the airline partnered with UNCF to launch a special aircraft livery to symbolize a joint commitment to creating opportunities in education and established UNCF as a CARE Miles partner, which allows Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan members to donate their miles to students flying out for college tours or flying home to be with their families on summer and holiday breaks. As part of the aircraft’s mission, Alaska has also supported several college tours and career and leadership development events. This spring, Alaska will support Portland area students from UNCF and the Portland Opportunities Industrialization Center as they go on HBCU tours.

“Howard University and the “Showtime” Marching Band are thrilled to take the national stage at the Portland Trail Blazers’ HBCU to the Pros Night.,” said Denise Saunders Thompson, Assistant Dean for Administration, Howard University College of Fine Arts. “We are excited to bring our dynamic energy, powerful stereophonic sound, and unmatched showmanship to the Pacific Northwest. As cultural ambassadors of Howard University, this moment is more than just a performance—it’s an opportunity to share our legacy of excellence while embodying our institution’s core values of “truth and service.” We believe this opportunity will strengthen the connection between our historic university and the vibrant Portland community. Under the direction of Chancellor Mills, the Showtime Band promises an exhilarating performance that will leave a lasting impression. Get ready, Portland—we’re coming to show up and show out!”

“We’re thrilled to once again partner with Alaska Airlines to bring a taste of the HBCU experience to the Pacific Northwest with the Howard University Showtime Band,” said Michelle Jalali, Senior Director of DEI, Portland Trail Blazers. “Bringing the culture and traditions of Historically Black Colleges and Universities to Portland is a meaningful way to inspire and inform our Black and brown youth on the tremendous opportunities that these schools offer, helping to strengthen the pipeline of young people attending and graduating from HBCUs. We look forward to a weekend of celebration, education, and show-stopping entertainment.”

“Our commitment to Portland runs deep – from our investment in the local community to offering the most flights to the most destinations from PDX,” said Megan Ouellette, vice president, public and government affairs at Alaska Airlines. “I know I join our more than 2600 Portland employees in anticipation as we partner with the iconic Trail Blazers and Howard University to bring the excitement of an HBCU to Portland.”

On Friday, February 21 the Trail Blazers and Alaska Airlines will host a community event at Portland Community College Cascade Gym (600 N Killingsworth St., Portland OR, 97217) beginning at 4 p.m. The event will be open to the public and feature performances from local dance and music groups, tabling from community groups, and the HU Showtime Marching Band’s first performance in Portland. On Saturday, February 22, both organizations will put on a private pregame mixer for local youth featuring a college and career exploration event made up of current professionals who are HBCU alumni and members of fraternities and sororities of the Divine 9. The weekend will close out on Sunday with another special community event featuring another show stopping performance from HU Showtime Marching Band.

Fans will have multiple opportunities to enjoy the incredible experience of the HU Showtime Marching Band throughout the game night. Prior to tip, catch the band participating in Blaze’s Pregame Parade presented by Polar Beverages throughout the 100 and 300 Level concourses. At halftime, stay in your seats for an epic halftime performance with the band taking over the Moda Center court with the sounds and choreography that make HBCU marching bands iconic. In addition to the band, the BlazerDancers will be joined by special guest dancers for a performance out on the court during a break in the game action.

In addition to the performances, the HBCU experience will be felt throughout Moda Center on February 22. Every attendee will receive a booklet upon entering the arena highlighting the night’s activations and entertainment. Back by popular demand, DJ Drae Slapz, an international DJ and artist, and member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., will be mixing tunes and providing the vibes as fans venture through the concourse. Throughout the night, special videos will play throughout the arena featuring the Local Portland NPHC Chapter and HBCU Alumni. Also, check out Black History posters highlighting HBCU alumni and D9 members who have made significant cultural impact.

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Big Ten football is getting a boost of HBCU excellence as Pep Hamilton joins the Maryland Terrapins as their new offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, head coach Michael Locksley announced Tuesday afternoon.

“Pep is one of the most well-respected offensive minds in our business, and his addition to the Maryland football family is significant,” Locksley said. “Pep has consistently developed players over his career, succeeding at all levels and always bringing out the best in everyone he works with. Additionally, Pep and I share many of the same core values and offensive philosophies, which will allow for a smooth transition.”

Hamilton’s hiring brings his coaching journey full circle. A Howard University graduate and former HBCU quarterback, he began his career at his alma mater, where he spent five seasons coaching quarterbacks before becoming Howard’s offensive coordinator. His early coaching success set him on a path that led to Stanford, where he helped develop Andrew Luck, and later to the Big Ten, where he served as Michigan’s assistant head coach and passing game coordinator from 2017-18.

Hamilton also brings extensive NFL experience, having worked for eight different franchises, including as offensive coordinator for the Indianapolis Colts and Houston Texans. At the professional level, he played a crucial role in the development of top quarterbacks such as Justin Herbert, Andrew Luck, and Jay Cutler.

Now, as he returns to the Big Ten, Hamilton carries the lessons from his HBCU roots and professional success into Maryland’s program. His ability to develop quarterbacks and install high-powered offenses makes him a pivotal figure in the Terps’ quest for success.

Hamilton’s first test in College Park will be shaping the Terrapins’ offense into a competitive force in the Big Ten, just as he has done at every level of football.

Howard University secured its second consecutive MEAC basketball Championship in 2024, and to celebrate the achievement, the HBCU unveiled a one-of-a-kind custom-designed championship ring to commemorate their back-to-back conference championships

The ring, designed by Southern Recognition, Inc., features a detachable Bison head pendant, a unique addition that allows players and fans to wear their Howard championship pride in a meaningful way. This innovative design reflects Howard’s legacy, blending tradition with modern craftsmanship to create a lasting symbol of victory.

This exclusive Howard championship ring highlights the team’s historic back-to-back MEAC titles and showcases intricate details that honor the program’s place in HBCU sports history. The detachable Bison head pendant makes it more than just a ring; it is a wearable piece of history that represents Howard’s ongoing pursuit of excellence. Along with the pendant, the ring is engraved with “Back-to-Back Champions”, marking the program’s continued success and solidifying Howard’s place among the top MEAC basketball programs. Every element of the design is carefully crafted to reflect the strength, perseverance, and culture of Howard athletics.

HBCU Howard University

Before this championship run, Howard had not won a MEAC title since 1992. Under Coach Kenneth Blakeney’s leadership, the program has transformed into a dominant force in HBCU basketball, competing at the highest level and gaining national recognition. Howard’s recent success is part of a larger trend of MEAC basketball teams making significant strides in college athletics, as HBCU programs continue to gain visibility, resources, and respect on a national scale.

Beyond being a championship keepsake, this ring also serves a greater purpose. Southern Recognition, Inc., the company behind its creation, has pledged to donate a portion of proceeds back to the Howard University men’s basketball program. These funds will directly support the team’s efforts to build on its championship success, fueling future recruitment, training, and program development. Fans, alumni, and supporters have the opportunity to own a piece of Howard’s championship history, with purchases directly benefiting the Bison’s pursuit of a third consecutive MEAC title.

Howard’s championship victory is more than just a milestone for the university; it represents the continued rise of HBCU athletics. With increasing investment, national exposure, and stronger recruiting, HBCU basketball is gaining the recognition it deserves. Howard’s MEAC championships and the creation of this one-of-a-kind championship ring further solidify the university’s status as a leader in HBCU sports.

Less than two years after playing each other for the HBCU national title, FAMU and Howard University will square off in the Orange Blossom Classic.

The game will take place at Hard Rock Cafe Stadium in Miami Gardens on Sept. 7.

“Playing in the Orange Blossom Classic is a great way to open the season,” said Howard football head coach Larry Scott. “Our team is excited about opening the season on national television and to be chosen for a game that will be watched all over the country. Howard and Florida A&M – it does not get any bigger than this in HBCU and FCS football. This is a huge game for both schools and the South Florida community and we’re glad to be part of it.”

Florida A&M and Howard University met in the inaugural Orange Blossom Classic back in 1933 in addition to playing in the 2023 Celebration Bowl. FAMU won that game, and the HBCU national title that season.

“This year’s matchup is not only a rematch of their 2023 Celebration Bowl showdown, but it also takes us back to the very beginning,” said Kendra Bulluck-Major, Executive Director of the Orange Blossom Classic. “The inaugural Orange Blossom Classic in 1933 featured these two historic programs—Florida A&M and Howard—facing off at the Black Only’s Ballpark in Jacksonville, Florida, in front of 2,000 fans. To see this rivalry come full circle, while celebrating the rich history and legacy of HBCUs, is truly special. We are excited to bring this experience to fans during Labor Day Weekend 2025.”

The 2025 Orange Blossom Classic promises an unforgettable week of activities, including the highly anticipated Battle of the Bands, the Fan Fest, and more, celebrating the vibrant culture and excellence of HBCUs.

“For the last several years, Howard University has seen a renaissance within our athletics programs, with our student-athletes winning championships in multiple sports,” said Howard Director of Athletics Kery Davis. “It is activities like the Orange Blossom Classic that not only help people see that Howard is not just an intellectual powerhouse but is an institution where our student-athletes can play on some of the biggest stages in the nation. We are honored to be in the Orange Blossom Classic and we look forward to this being a great weekend for everyone in the Howard family.”

The Kansas City Chiefs win over the Buffalo Bills put them back in the Super Bowl, including a pair of former HBCU football stars.

Third-year defensive backs Bryan Cook and Joshua Williams are both headed back to the Super Bowl for the third straight time as the Chiefs prepare to take on the Philadelphia Eagles in New Orleans.

Cook is a safety who started his career at Howard University before finishing up with Cincinnati. The Chiefs selected him in the second round of the 2022 draft. Williams is a cornerback who played his career at Division II HBCU Fayetteville State University.

Bryan Cook, Chiefs, HBCU

“It’s a blessing. To be able to do this three years in a row — ever since my rookie year I’ve really been winning. Coming into the league that really is unheard of,” Williams told KSHB after the win. “It’s really hard to put into words how blessed I am to have gotten picked up by Kansas City and to be a part of history right now. I know we’ve got a lot to do, going into New Orleans, but just to e over here right now soaking in the moment — it’s a blessing.”

Both men are part of a rare group of NFL players who have multiple Super Bowl rings. But a win against the Eagles would make them part of the first franchise in history to win three straight Super Bowls — and they would have done it in their first three seasons.

“It’s unbelievable. I couldn’t have imagined coming into this game, doing the preparation that we’ve done and walking out of here with a loss,” Williams continued. “We put in the work, right now it might look like we just keep winning…keep winning…but the things we do behind closed doors — it’s a lot. The preparation that goes into this — it’s a lot.”

Washington D.C. — HBCU, Howard University’s Blake Harper has earned his 11th consecutive MEAC Rookie of the Week award, underscoring both his talent and the program’s strong recruiting under head coach Kenny Blakeney.

Harper delivered standout performances this past week, averaging 22 points and 10 rebounds per game in matchups against Coppin State and Bowie State. On January 13, Harper notched a double-double with 25 points and 12 rebounds while shooting a perfect 12-for-12 from the free-throw line against Coppin State. Two days later, he scored 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds in the win over Bowie State.

Harper leads the MEAC in scoring (18.8 points per game) and rebounding (6.9 rebounds per game) so far this season. His consistent performances position him as the favorite for MEAC Rookie of the Year, following in the footsteps of Howard stars Shy Odom (2022-2023) and Elijah Hawkins (2021-2022). These back-to-back Rookie of the Year wins for Howard University players highlight the program’s dominance in attracting and developing top-tier talent.

Howard University’s basketball program has risen to prominence in the MEAC due to Blakeney’s focused recruiting strategy. By securing commitments from high-upside players like Harper, Odom, and Hawkins, HU has solidified its place as a force within HBCU basketball. The program’s success on the court is a direct result of Blakeney’s ability to identify and develop talent, particularly within the D.C. metropolitan area.

Elijah Hawkins set the tone in 2021-2022, earning MEAC Rookie of the Year honors and establishing the foundation for Howard’s recruiting success. Shy Odom continued that trend the following season, showcasing his versatility and skill. Now, Harper’s breakout freshman campaign has further elevated the Bison’s profile in the MEAC, reinforcing Howard’s position as a program to watch.

With 11 Rookie of the Week awards and counting, Harper is the clear frontrunner for MEAC Rookie of the Year. His scoring and rebounding have made him an essential piece of the Bison’s success this season, and his growth has been a testament to the strong developmental culture fostered under Blakeney’s leadership. Harper’s achievements are not just a personal milestone but also a symbol of Howard University’s continued excellence in HBCU athletics.

Blake Harper’s remarkable freshman season is a testament to Howard’s recruiting strategy and the program’s growing influence in HBCU basketball. With the MEAC Rookie of the Year award within reach, Harper is set to carry on the tradition of success established by those who came before him.

WASHINGTON, D.C. | In a thrilling MLK Day showdown, Division II Morehouse College stunned Division I HBCU rival Howard University, 79-76, in front of a packed Burr Gymnasium. The victory marked Morehouse’s first win over a Division I opponent in nearly three decades, dating back to triumphs over Howard in 1996 and 1997.

The Maroon Tigers (9-8) delivered a near-flawless performance, highlighted by sharp three-point shooting and clutch defense. Howard, the MEAC leader, suffered its second-consecutive loss to a Division II HBCU in less than a week, following a defeat to Bowie State.

First Half Dominance

Morehouse set the tone early, silencing the home crowd with an efficient offense led by sophomore guard Sincere Key, who drained two quick three-pointers. Forward Cedric Taylor III added another from beyond the arc, and the Maroon Tigers surged to a double-digit lead with a high-flying dunk by Omar Rowe off a lob from JerMontae Hill. By halftime, Morehouse led 40-28, thanks to 57% shooting from three-point range and stifling defense that forced seven turnovers.

Jaden Gray, Morehouse College, HBCU
Jaden Gray scored 22 points in the upset for Morehouse College.

Howard’s Rally Falls Short

Howard clawed back in the second half, using a 12-2 run to trim the deficit to two. But Morehouse responded with timely three-pointers from Key and Jaden Gray, who led all scorers with 22 points. With under three minutes remaining, the teams traded leads before Taylor III buried a 25-foot three-pointer to put Morehouse ahead for good.

In the final seconds, Gray’s two free throws extended the lead to 79-76. Howard had one last chance, but a potential game-tying three-pointer fell short, sending Morehouse into celebration.

Key Stats and Performers

The Maroon Tigers shot 44% from three-point range, with Taylor III and Key combining for eight triples. Amahn Decker anchored the defense with pivotal stops and rebounds, while Gray’s clutch performance solidified the historic upset.

This MLK Day victory solidifies Morehouse’s spot as a consistently high performing HBCU basketball program and fuels momentum for its upcoming SIAC schedule.

LeSean “Shady” McCoy, the former NFL star, recently sparked excitement with his playful comments about coaching at Howard University. Speaking with confidence and humor, McCoy shared his vision for leading the Howard football program on the 25/10 podcast he hosts with DeSean Jackson, who recently took over as head coach of the HBCU football program at Delaware State. He highlighted the school’s rich history and tradition, saying it would be an honor to coach at the HBCU. McCoy promised to build disciplined players, develop them into great young men, and lead the team to championships. Of course, he couldn’t resist adding his signature humor, saying, “But you got to offer me a lot of money though, uhoh, you feel me?”

LeSean McCoy didn’t stop with his lighthearted pitch for the Howard coaching job. He went on to imagine an even bigger movement in HBCU football, suggesting that other NFL stars like DeSean Jackson and Michael Vick could also take head coaching roles at historically Black colleges. He envisioned himself at Howard, Jackson at Delaware State, and Vick at Norfolk State, calling it a “whole movement.” The idea of NFL legends coaching at HBCUs has fans and alumni buzzing, imagining the impact it could have on elevating the schools’ athletic programs.

While McCoy’s comments were made in jest, they touch on a larger trend in HBCU sports. The success of NFL greats like Deion Sanders at Jackson State and Eddie George at Tennessee State shows how star power can transform these programs. Having big names as coaches can increase visibility, attract top recruits, and bring a winning culture to HBCUs.

Even if McCoy’s idea to coach at Howard University remains talk for now, it’s creating excitement around HBCU football and what’s possible. His comments are a reminder of the talent and potential within these schools. Whether or not McCoy ends up at Howard, the conversation keeps HBCUs in the spotlight and sparks hope for a brighter future in athletics. As McCoy said, “Y’all see what’s going on,” and fans everywhere are paying attention.

Bobby Wagner, the six-time NFL All-Pro linebacker and a key defensive leader for the Washington Commanders, has added an ambitious academic pursuit to his resume. At 34, Wagner is working toward a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree at Howard University, one of the nation’s most prestigious historically Black colleges and universities (HBCU).

Wagner began the 18-month program in January of 2023 and sees it as an opportunity to prepare for life beyond the gridiron. Speaking to reporters, Wagner explained his decision to enroll at Howard University. “I just looked at Howard as a great school to learn business from. It’s one of the best in the country, and why wouldn’t I choose them?” he said.

The linebacker, who signed a one-year contract with the Washington Commanders worth up to $8.5 million, acknowledged that Howard’s reputation and its connection to HBCU culture played a significant role in his choice. Wagner emphasized the importance of always striving for growth, whether on the field or off. “Similarly, with football, you always want to try to find ways to perfect your craft, so I felt like this was an opportunity for me to do that off the field,” he added.

Wagner’s move to the nation’s capital reunited him with head coach Dan Quinn and linebackers coach Ken Norton Jr., both of whom he worked with during his time with the Seattle Seahawks. His decision to join Washington, however, was influenced not only by football but also by his academic ambitions. Initially, Wagner expected the MBA coursework to be fully online but indicated the format might change to include in-person elements.

Wagner has long demonstrated a knack for managing his career on and off the field. As his own agent, he negotiated his Washington Commander’s deal, which guaranteed him $6 million, highlighting his sharp business acumen. His pursuit of an MBA is another step toward his post-NFL aspirations, whether in executive leadership, entrepreneurship, or mentorship.

The linebacker’s efforts have not gone unnoticed. Wagner’s dedication to education and his community earned him a nomination for the NFL’s 2024 Walter Payton Man of the Year Award, which recognizes players for their contributions on and off the field.

Wagner’s story underscores the impact of an HBCU education and its role in empowering athletes to excel beyond sports. As he continues to dominate on the field while expanding his horizons through education, Wagner sets a powerful example for athletes and professionals alike.

Former NFL assistant and HBCU quarterback Pep Hamilton is one of two candidates who have interviewed for the New England Patriots opening.

The New England Patriots are exploring new leadership after firing head coach Jerod Mayo, who posted a 4-13 record in 2024.

Hamilton is an esteemed offensive mind with deep roots in the football world and a proud alumnus of an HBCU, Howard University.

Hamilton’s career began as a standout quarterback at Howard University, where he played from 1993 to 1996. Known for his football IQ and leadership on the field, he helped elevate Howard’s program while exemplifying the excellence associated with HBCUs. After his playing days, Hamilton transitioned into coaching, quickly building a reputation for developing quarterbacks and orchestrating potent offenses.

His coaching resume spans both the NFL and college football, with stints as the offensive coordinator for the Indianapolis Colts, Los Angeles Chargers, and Houston Texans. During his time with the Colts, Hamilton played a pivotal role in developing quarterback Andrew Luck, a connection that began at Stanford University, where Hamilton was Luck’s offensive coordinator. In the XFL, Hamilton served as head coach and general manager of the DC Defenders, where his innovative play-calling brought attention to his adaptability and leadership in diverse environments.

Hamilton’s candidacy for the Patriots job comes at a critical juncture for the franchise, which is eager to revitalize its offense and rebuild its culture. His history of working with quarterbacks aligns with the team’s immediate need for player development, especially at the most important position.

Hamilton is considered a long-shot. However, if he were to secure the position, he would join a growing list of HBCU alumni making waves at the highest levels of football, furthering the legacy of representation and excellence from historically Black colleges and universities. The New England Patriots, seeking to recapture their former dominance, may find Hamilton’s blend of experience and innovation a solid fit.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Freshman HBCU hoops standout Blake Harper (Washington) poured in a game-high 34 points to lead four Bison in double figures to lift the Howard University men’s basketball team to a 100-94 shootout win over Delaware State (DSU) in the opening game of the MEAC (Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) season.

A 6-foot-8 freshman from D.C., Harper tied his career high that he recently set in the HBCU rivalry game at Hampton (Dec. 28), hitting on a sizzling 10-of-12 shots from the field, including 3-of-4 from three-point land and a perfect 11-for-11 from the charity stripe.

Howard (6-9, 1-0 MEAC) took the early lead and began to temporarily pull away from the visitors with a big 18-3 run that opened a 15-point lead at the 8:41 mark of the first half. Harper led the way with 20 points but senior guard Marcus Dockery (15 points) and graduate forward Cameron Shockley-Okeke (13) combined to help keep the Hornets at bay with a 55-47 halftime lead.

Delaware State hustled and scrapped their way to an 8-0 run with a little under seven minutes in the second stanza.

Two free throws by Robert Smith helped the Hornets tie the game, 78-78, with a little over seven minutes left in regulation.

Howard quickly regained the lead, 81-78, on a Shockley-Okeke three-pointer. From there, the two teams traded blows with back-to-back baskets. With Dockery, Okeke, and Harper scoring timely baskets, the Bison were able to stave off several significant runs by the Hornets successfully.

Smith, Martez Robinson, and Kaseem Watson did all they could to keep the Hornets within striking distance, but the Bison were able to stave off the Hornets’ attempts as graduate guard Jaren Johnson (Lynwood, Calif.), Dockery and Harper provided the scoring down the stretch to secure the win. The Bison were able to close out the game with an 8-6 run over the last 1:08.

For the game, the Bison were a perfect 27-for-27 from the charity stripe.

Shockley-Okeke had his best game in a Bison uniform with 24 points on 8-of-12 shooting, including 6-of-10 from three-point land. Dockery cashed in with 19 points, going 7-of-13 from the field. Johnson also came up big with 12 points and six rebounds off the bench.

Even more important may have been the contributions that may not show up in the stats column. Junior forward Ayodele Taiwo (Lagos, Nigeria) came off the bench in the second to score a key basket, two offensive rebounds, a blocked shot, and a key assist in 11 minutes of play.

The Bison recorded 25 assists on 31 made field goals, shot 60 percent (31-of-52) from the field, and held an 18-7 advantage in bench points.

The Hornets got an outstanding game from its trio of Robinson with a team-high 28 points, Smith (27 points) and Watson (22 points).

Saturday (Jan. 11), Howard University hosts Morgan State inside Burr Gymnasium. The HBCU hoops tipoff is slated for 4 p.m.

As the HBCU women’s basketball season heats up, Norfolk State, Coppin State, and Howard University of the MEAC are vying to secure a possible historic NCAA tournament seed. For decades, HBCU women’s basketball programs have faced an uphill battle for recognition in March Madness, often being relegated to 16 seeds, the lowest possible placement in the NCAA tournament field.

Historical Context: HBCUs in the NCAA Tournament

The 1982 inaugural DI women’s basketball tournament featured three HBCUs: Howard, Jackson State, and Cheyney. Cheyney set the gold standard for HBCUs, reaching the Final Four three times and the National Championship game in 1982, where they finished as runners-up to Louisiana Tech. Their success remains the pinnacle of HBCU women’s basketball.

Since then, 19 HBCU women’s programs have participated in March Madness, but victories have been rare. Only Cheyney, South Carolina State, and Howard have won games, and Howard is the only HBCU to win since the tournament expanded to 64 teams.

HBCUs have typically been seeded at the bottom:

 • 16-seeds: Assigned 34 times, with only one win.
 • Highest seed: No. 12 (achieved three times before 1995).

Where We Are Now: Norfolk State, Coppin State, and Howard

With March Madness on the horizon, the MEAC’s top teams—Norfolk State, Coppin State, and Howard—are fighting for more than just a tournament berth. They aim to break the cycle of low seeds and prove that HBCU programs deserve better representation.

Norfolk State: Leading the Pack

Norfolk State defeats Howard University basketball HBCU women’s basketball

Norfolk State is the MEAC’s strongest contender this season. At 12-4, they hold the highest NET ranking (118) of any MEAC team and are ranked 13th in the College Insider Mid-Major Top 25 poll. Their balanced play, highlighted by a defense that forces 11.3 steals per game, positions them as the team to beat.

Key wins over Missouri and Auburn (SEC) and Wyoming (Mountain West) showcase their ability to compete with teams from powerhouse conferences. Though they fell to South Carolina in the 2023 tournament as a 16-seed, this year’s resume gives them a real shot at a higher placement.

Historical Tournament Record: Norfolk State is 0-3 in NCAA play, with their last appearance in 2024 as a 16-seed. Their previous games have all been against top-seeded teams.

What They Need to Do:

 • Dominate MEAC play, particularly against Coppin State and Howard.
 • Win the conference tournament to secure an automatic bid.
 • Avoid bad losses that could weaken their NET ranking.

Coppin State: The Underdog with Potential

Coppin State enters conference play with a 9-7 record and a NET ranking of 145. They are also receiving votes in the College Insider Mid-Major poll. The Eagles boast key wins over Arizona State (Pac-12) and Kent State, a team receiving votes in the same poll. These victories demonstrate their ability to rise to the occasion.

Led by Laila Lawrence, who averages 18.2 points and 10.1 rebounds per game, Coppin State has the talent to compete. However, inconsistency, particularly in road games, has been their Achilles’ heel.

Historical Tournament Record: Coppin State is 0-3, last appearing in 2008 as a 16-seed. Despite competitive performances, they have yet to break through for a win.

What They Need to Do:

 • Build on their non-conference momentum by performing consistently in MEAC play.
 • Use Lawrence’s dominance to secure key wins, especially on the road.
 • Win the MEAC tournament to guarantee a spot in March Madness.

Howard: The Long Shot

Howard is a storied program, but this season has been a challenge. At 6-8 with a NET ranking of 214, the Bison face an uphill battle. Destiny Howell leads the team with 15.6 points per game, but the team’s shooting struggles (36.7% FG, 23.8% 3PT) and rebounding issues (-1.9 margin) have been obstacles.

Howard made history in 1982, becoming one of the first HBCUs to compete in the NCAA tournament. In 2022, they won their first game against Incarnate Word before falling to South Carolina in the second round. They remain the only HBCU to win a game in the 64-team era.

Historical Tournament Record: Howard is 1-7 in NCAA play, with their lone win in 2022.

What They Need to Do:

 • Improve offensive efficiency and rebounding.
 • Secure key wins against Norfolk State and Coppin State in conference play.
 • Rely on their legacy and fight for a conference title to punch their ticket.

The Case for a Higher Seed

For decades, HBCUs have been boxed into lower seeds, limiting their chances for success in the tournament. Norfolk State, with its strong resume and national ranking, is the best bet to break this trend. Coppin State’s key non-conference wins also make them a contender, but they must be more consistent. Howard, despite its legacy, faces too many challenges to seriously contend for a higher seed this season.

Why It Matters

Breaking the 16-seed barrier would do more than elevate an HBCU program; A higher seed would open the door for more competitive matchups and potential upsets, further showcasing the strength of HBCU women’s basketball.

As conference play unfolds, Norfolk State, Coppin State, and Howard carry the hopes of continuing a legacy of excellence and representation on the national stage. This could be the year an HBCU team changes the narrative in March Madness. Stay tuned.

When Kenny Gallop Jr. arrived at Washington D.C. HBCU Howard University, he had one goal in mind: to make the most of his opportunity. Fast forward to 2024, and the star safety has done just that. With a long list of accolades and a reputation as a leader on and off the field, Gallop is making a strong case as an NFL prospect.

“I’ve always believed in myself,” Gallop said. “When you write your goals down and work for them, there’s no better feeling than seeing it all payoff.”

Gallop’s journey to this moment is a story of determination, resilience, and staying true to his roots. Hailing from the 757 area—a region known for producing legendary athletes like Michael Vick and Allen Iverson—he grew up with a chip on his shoulder. “We don’t get the most exposure, but if you know, you know,” he explained. “We’re hungry, and that mindset drives us.”

In 2023, Gallop’s hunger was on full display. He was named MEAC Defensive Player of the Year and helped Howard win their first MEAC title in over three decades, a monumental achievement for an HBCU football program. His standout performances included eight solo tackles against Morgan State to secure a Celebration Bowl berth and a season-high 11 tackles with a game-clinching interception during homecoming against Norfolk State. “Big-time players make big-time plays,” Gallop said. “I just trust myself and go out there believing I’m the best player on the field.”

Gallop’s achievements didn’t stop there. In 2024, he earned preseason recognition across the board: MEAC Preseason Defensive Player of the Year, a third Preseason All-American accolade, and spots on watch lists for the Reese’s Senior Bowl and Buck Buchanan Award. His dominance has put him firmly in the conversation as a top NFL prospect from an HBCU. “It’s all a blessing,” he said. “It shows the work you’ve put in and the sacrifices you’ve made.”

Off the field, Gallop’s leadership has been just as impactful. When he first arrived at Howard, he described himself as quiet and observant. But over time, he grew into a vocal leader who inspired his teammates by example. “I’d get there early, leave late, and put in the extra work,” he said. “Younger guys watch you, so I wanted to be someone they could look up to.”

Gallop’s decision to stay at Howard University, despite the lure of the transfer portal, speaks volumes about his character. “Howard was my only scholarship offer,” he said. “It felt like home. I made a 40-year decision, not a four-year one. The brotherhood, the culture, and the support—it all means more than money.”

For Gallop, the NFL dream began to feel real after his sophomore year when coaches and teammates started telling him he had a shot. “I’ve always wanted to go to college and not have my parents pay for it,” he shared. “But when people started saying I had NFL potential, I started believing it too.”

As his name surfaces in NFL discussions, Gallop remains focused on the legacy he’s building at Howard University and within the broader HBCU community. “I want to be remembered not just for what I did on the field, but for the kind of person and leader I was,” he said. “When you talk about Howard, I want Kenny Gallop Jr. to be a name that lasts forever.”

With his impressive resume, tireless work ethic, and undeniable talent, Kenny Gallop Jr. is well on his way to leaving a lasting mark at Howard, in the HBCU community, and, perhaps soon, in the NFL.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sacramento State Director of Athletics Mark Orr announced today that Brennan Marion has been appointed as the 13th head football coach in school history. Marion’s first NCAA Div. I coaching opportunity came at Washington DC-based HBCU Howard University, where he posted two exceptional seasons (2017-18) as the Bisons’ offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

In 2017, quarterback Caylin Newton was named the MEAC Rookie of the Year after becoming the first freshman in the HBCU conference’s history to surpass 3,000 yards of total offense (3,185). Marion’s offense sparked Howard University to a 7-4 record in 2017, including a memorable 43-40 win over UNLV — the largest upset in college football history.

One of the top offensive coordinators in the country, Brennan Marion comes to the Hornets after spending the last two seasons at UNLV. Under his watch, the Rebels had great success, posting a 19-8 overall record and qualifying for a pair of bowl games. This season, UNLV ranked 14th in the FBS with a school-record-setting average of 36.2 points per game. The team’s average of 251.2 rushing yards per game would also be the most for the school in over 45 years. For his efforts, Marion was named one of five finalists for the Football Scoop Offensive Coordinator of the Year.

HBCU Brennan Marion Howard University

“I’m truly honored by the heartfelt welcome from President Luke Wood and Director of Athletics Mark Orr to be the program’s next head football coach,” Marion said. “Sacramento State is fully invested in becoming a nationally known football program, and I’ve always relished the opportunity to build and create. My family and I can’t wait to serve the student-athletes of this program and the Sacramento community. As a University, we’re going to write history and work tirelessly to build something that the community will be proud of for generations to come.”

In Marion’s “Go-Go” offense, five UNLV offensive players earned either first or second team all-Mountain West this fall. That includes WR Ricky White III, who became the first player in school history to post two 1,000-yard seasons, and Hajj-Malik Williams, who became just the second Rebel quarterback since 1996 to be named either first or second team all-league.

Howard University will take a trip to Philadelphia next fall to take on an FBS program.

Temple University has scheduled a game against Howard University at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pa., for the 2025 season, according to a report from Owls Daily.

Temple, FBS
Temple University finished 3-9 during the 2024 season.

The two schools have played once to this point, with Temple beating HU, 40-0, in 1991. Howard went 4-8 this season and lost to Rutgers, 44-7, in its only matchup against an FBS opponent. Temple hosted HBCU Norfolk State during the 2023 season.

The matchup against Temple now gives Howard three matchups for the 2025 season. It will take on Richmond on Sept. 27. It will then take on Tennessee State University in Nashville on Oct. 18. That game is a back-end of a home-and-home that saw TSU play Howard for its homecoming in 2024.

In MEAC play it will host Norfolk State, North Carolina Central and Morgan State in 2025 while it will travel to Delaware State and South Carolina State in conference rotation. There are six teams in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.

HU is also scheduled to face Rutgers again in 2026 on Sept. 19. It will open up that season in the MEAC/SWAC Challenge against Alabama A&M.

Howard University (4-7, 1-3 MEAC) faces a significant challenge as they take on Morgan State University (5-6, 2-2 MEAC) in a crucial HBCU matchup. Following a brawl in its previous game, Howard will be without 17 unspecified players due to suspension, potentially impacting their depth and key positions.A source indicates that much of the starting defense will be out of the game due to suspension

Team Overview

CategoryHowardMorgan State
Points Per Game19.7323.36
Rushing Yards/Game154.9149.1
Passing Yards/Game165.73160.0
Total Offense/Game320.6309.1
Points Allowed/Game25.3623.55

Morgan State enters the game with a slight edge in defensive performance, while Howard’s offensive numbers rely heavily on their star players. With the suspensions, the Bison’s ability to execute offensively could be significantly hindered.

Howard University Key Players

 • Ja’Shawn Scroggins (QB): Leads the Bison offense with 1,166 passing yards and 8 touchdowns. If Scroggins is among the suspended players, Howard’s passing attack will take a serious hit.
 • Jarett Hunter (RB): The backbone of Howard’s ground game with 743 rushing yards and 5 touchdowns. His absence would leave the Bison scrambling to establish a run game.
 • Kenny Gallop Jr. (S): Anchors Howard’s secondary and has been instrumental in stopping big plays. A missing Gallop could expose Howard to Morgan State’s opportunistic passing game.

The impact of these suspensions will not be known until game time, but losing any of these key players would present a major challenge.

Morgan State Key Players

 • Duce Taylor (QB): Efficient and reliable, Taylor has thrown for 847 yards, 3 touchdowns, and just 1 interception. His composure will be vital in exploiting any defensive gaps caused by Howard’s depleted roster.
 • Jason Collins Jr. (RB): A powerful rusher with 520 yards and 6 touchdowns, Collins will look to control the game on the ground.
 • Andre Crawley (WR): Leads the team in receiving with 513 yards and is capable of breaking off big plays.

Morgan State’s balanced attack and strong defensive front, led by Elijah Williams with 11 sacks, position them well to capitalize on Howard’s misfortunes.

Keys to the Game

 1. Howard’s Depth Test: With 17 suspended players, Howard’s roster will be under immense pressure. Depth and substitutions will be tested at every position.
 2. Star Player Availability: If Scroggins, Hunter, or Gallop are unavailable, Howard could struggle to compete in this HBCU showdown.
 3. Morgan State’s Defense: Williams and the defensive unit must apply consistent pressure on Howard’s depleted offense to force mistakes and turnovers.

Game Prediction

This MEAC matchup holds significance for Morgan State as they aim to finish the season with a winning conference record. Meanwhile, Howard will be fighting for pride and redemption amid the fallout from last week’s brawl. Morgan State’s depth, efficient quarterback play, and defensive prowess make them favorites in this game. If Howard is missing any of their key players like Scroggins or Hunter, it could be a long day for the Bison. Morgan State is in a prime position to take advantage of the situation and close out the season on a high note.

This HBCU battle is not just about the stats—it’s about resilience, depth, and the ability to overcome adversity.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Howard University Athletics Director Kery Davis is pleased to announce that head women’s basketball coach Tiesha “Ty” Grace has received a four-year contract extension through the 2027-28 season.

Grace joined Howard University in 2015 and, over her time here, has navigated the Bison to become one of the best programs in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC). During 2021-22 season, the Bison won their MEAC Tournament title since 2001, advancing to the NCAA Tournament and earning a win over the University of Incarnate Word in the inaugural First Four round – the University’s first NCAA Tournament win in history.

“Coach Grace is one of the top coaches in the entire sport of women’s basketball,” Davis said of Grace, who was named the 2020-21 MEAC Coach of the Year. “Her student-athletes have prospered on the court, in the classroom, and in the community. She’s excelled in ingraining the championship culture into this program. The future of Howard women’s basketball is incredibly bright under her leadership.”

Last season, the Bison made their fourth consecutive MEAC championship game appearance after ending with a 10-4 record in conference play. During the season, which also marked the 50th anniversary of the program.

Prior to joining Howard University, Grace coached at her alma mater the University of New Haven, winning 73 percent of her games (44-16), and leading the team to two NCAA Division II Tournament appearances. Under Grace, New Haven’s women’s basketball program made its first trip to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight in 2014-15.

Grace’s extensive coaching experience includes stints as an assistant coach at Seton Hall University and the United States Military Academy. At Seton Hall, Grace served as the top assistant and recruiting coordinator from 2009-13, bringing a pair of McDonald’s All-Americans and a 25th ranked recruiting class to the institution.

In three years at Army, Grace coached the team to an impressive showing, including a then-program best 24 victories in the 2006-07 season with the Patriot League Player of the Year, two Rookies of the Year and a Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Howard University women's basketball Tiesha "Ty" Grace

Tiesha “Ty” Grace is excited about what lies ahead for Howard University’s women’s program and looks forward to working with leadership, including President Ben Vinson, III, Ph.D., Senior Vice President of Student Affairs Cynthia Evers, Ed.., and Athletics Director Davis in making the program one that continues to attract some of the nation’s most skilled student-athletes.

“I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to work with such a talented and dedicated group of young women, and I look forward to seeing how we can take this program to even higher heights,” Grace said.

A 1999 graduate of the University of New Haven, Grace is one of only two women’s basketball players to record 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds. A 2010 New Haven Athletics Hall of Fame inductee, Grace finished her Chargers career with a total of 1,347 points, 1,047 rebounds and 47 double-doubles.

Grace is a native of Roosevelt, N.Y. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Management of Sports Industries from New Haven in 1999 and a Master of Administrative Science from Fairleigh Dickinson in 2001. She has one son, Kalen.

The 2024-25 women’s basketball season tipped off in Tallahassee, Fla. on November 4 with a 78-66 victory over Florida A&M University. The Bison have continued the momentum and are off to a 3-1 record.

The MEAC has reviewed the tape and suspended nearly 40 student-athletes and one coach following a brawl that took place following the North Carolina Central – Howard University game on rare Friday night HBCU broadcast.

A total of 36 student-athletes — 17 from Howard University and 19 from North Carolina Central — have been suspended by the conference. In addition, one assistant coach from NCCU has been suspended as well for violating the MEAC Constitution & Bylaws. No names were released.

“The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference has a zero-tolerance policy for fighting, as it directly violates the values of sportsmanship, respect, and integrity that define our Conference,” said MEAC Commissioner Sonja Stills. “We are committed to maintaining a safe and respectful environment for all student-athletes, coaches, and fans. Any actions that compromise these principles will result in serious consequences. We expect all participants in MEAC athletic events to conduct themselves with dignity and uphold the high standards that reflect the spirit of the MEAC.”

North Carolina Central, Howard University
The NCCU-Howard game was intense from start to finish, and beyond.

The Friday night brawl was one of three that involved HBCU football programs over the weekend. The SWAC matchup between Jackson State and Alabama State resulted in 16 suspensions. The CIAA Championship Game between Virginia Union and Virginia State saw a post-game altercation as well. While league commissioner Jaqie McWilliams Parker has issued a statement, no punishments have been handed down as of press time, but an investigation is underway.

NC Central head coach Trei Oliver addressed the matter head-on during his portion of the weekly MEAC Football Coaches Conference on Monday.

“There’s no room for that. There’s no reason to be fighting or anything like that,” Oliver said. “You have 60 minutes…go ahead and play hard for 60 minutes. Compete, shake hands, and let’s let’s go ahead and be done with it. But we have our opportunity play on national television and be able to display our brand, two great universities. And I think a great conference. And I think that we let our university down, conference down and all of HBCU. We have an opportunity to play on national television. But I’m apologetic for whatever actions our guys had with the altercation.”

NC Central’s players will miss Saturday’s contest against Delaware State, as it hopes to represent the conference and HBCU football in the FCS playoffs with a win. Howard University will play Morgan State to finish its season.

NORFOLK, VA?– The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) is conducting a comprehensive review of the post-game altercation that occurred following the Howard vs. North Carolina Central football game on Friday, November 15.

“This was a very unfortunate incident, and we are taking it with the utmost seriousness,” said MEAC Commissioner Sonja Stills. “The MEAC holds its student-athletes, coaches, and staff to the highest standards of sportsmanship and professionalism. We are committed
to thoroughly reviewing this matter and will take appropriate disciplinary action based on our findings.”

The MEAC will issue an official statement upon completing its review, which will include an evaluation of video footage of the incident and reports from game officials, neutral observers, coaches, athletic staff, and the student-athletes involved.

About the post-game altercation

The game ended in a decisive 26-3 win for North Carolina Central. But shortly after NCCU head coach Trei Oliver and HU head coach Larry Scott shook hands things descended into chaos with pushing, shoving and punching between players and coaches as well. The action went on for well over five minutes before the two teams separated and moved towards their locker rooms.

A few minutes later things began to bubble up in the parking lot near the visiting locker room, with multiple sources indicating North Carolina Central assistant coaches were involved in another altercation.

NC Central head coach Trei Oliver was asked if — given the chippy-ness in the game and the history between the two programs, he thought about not sending his team out to shake hands.

“I always shake hands. Last year I didn’t like the vibe at the end of the game, so I told my guys to go to the locker room,” Oliver said. “I went across the field and shook the coach’s hand. I took the loss. I was down there talking to another coach, I didn’t see what happened, but that’s not our football team. That’s not who we are, I don’t care what happened. We go to the locker room. Go to the band, then go to the locker room. That’s not us, that’s not who we are. That won’t be tolerated in my program.”

North Carolina Central University (NCCU) overcame early struggles in the red zone to earn a commanding 26-3 win over Howard University on Friday night at O’Kelly-Riddick Stadium. The victory kept the Eagles’ hopes alive for the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) championship and a potential Celebration Bowl berth.

Howard opened the scoring late in the first quarter with a 36-yard field goal by Dylan West. NCCU responded with a promising drive but missed a 34-yard field goal attempt. Another opportunity came in the second quarter when the Eagles drove to Howard’s 3-yard line, only to lose possession on a fumble. The struggles continued when a second field goal attempt was blocked.

NCCU finally broke through late in the second quarter as Walker Harris found Chris Mosley for a 12-yard touchdown pass, giving the Eagles a slim 6-3 halftime lead.

In the second half, NCCU’s offense hit its stride, largely behind the explosive play of J’Mari Taylor. The junior running back delivered a sensational 61-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, extending the lead to 13-3. Taylor added two more rushing touchdowns in the fourth quarter, from 18 and 40 yards, finishing with 206 rushing yards on 24 carries and three scores.

Meanwhile, the North Carolina Central defense dominated, holding Howard to just 121 total yards, six first downs, and six sacks. The Bison were unable to convert any of their 13 third-down attempts.

With the win, NCCU improved to 7-3 overall and 3-1 in MEAC play. However, for the Eagles to claim the MEAC title, South Carolina State must lose its final two games against Morgan State and Norfolk State. A South Carolina State win on Saturday would eliminate NCCU from championship contention and secure the Celebration Bowl bid for the Bulldogs.

DURHAM, NC — A Friday night showcase of top HBCU football programs turned into Fight Night after the game between North Carolina Central and Howard University.

North Carolina Central, Howard University, HBCU Gameday

The tension hung over the game like the cloud of smoke emanating from NCCU’s industrial center at the edge of venerable O’Kelly-Riddick Stadium. You could credit Howard’s frustration at being unable to take advantage of a standout performance from its defense and special teams in the first half, as it accumulated just 113 yards of total offense.

But go back a few months ago to the HBCU Legacy Bowl, when Howard University coach Larry Scott ran former NCCU quarterback Davius Richard on a goal-line play, leading to an injury that kept him out of proper NFL Draft workouts. Oliver instinctively aired out his displeasure via Twitter

“I promise he would not have played if I knew that those dumbass coaches were going to run him,” Oliver wrote. He later apologized and rectracted his statement.

But even before that, the two programs spent the last two years battling for MEAC supremacy, which was also a point of contention within itself.

Howard University claimed a share of the 2022 MEAC title based on record even though NCCU put up 50 points on it in a head-to-head win that propelled it to the Celebration Bowl. Oliver was annoyed by the co-champion claim as his team went on to win the HBCU national title by knocking off Jackson State in the Celebration Bowl. Howard returned the favor last fall when it handed NCCU a 50-20 loss to take the lead and claim the MEAC title and moved on to the Celebration Bowl.

These two programs aren’t traditionally rival HBCU football programs, but that would be hard to tell given the back-and-forth between them over the past few seasons.

Rivalries are compelling and fun, and they do often involve fights. But Friday night’s unscheduled bout between the two schools, captured on ESPN, was a bad look for both programs and should not be swept under the rug by the universities or the MEAC. All eyes will be on Norfolk, VA to make sure things don’t get that out of control again.

The Howard University Bison men’s basketball team heads to Atlanta on November 13 for the HBCU All-Star Challenge, facing off against the Tennessee State University (TSU) Tigers at 7 p.m. This much-anticipated matchup will take place at the Epps Gym on the campus of Clark Atlanta University, bringing together two prominent HBCU programs to showcase their talent on a national stage.

Marcus Dockery, Howard University, HBCU Gameday

Howard enters the game with momentum after a decisive 91-73 victory over Dillard, led by senior guard Marcus Dockery’s 23-point performance. Dockery, who has been consistent from beyond the arc, is one of several Bison players averaging double figures this season, making him a key player to watch. Alongside Dockery, newcomer Blake Harper earned recognition as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Rookie of the Week, providing Howard with a promising backcourt presence.

Tennessee State, competing out of the Ohio Valley Conference, comes into the HBCU All-Star Challenge following a recent 81-66 loss to Wyoming. TSU boasts a balanced lineup with five players scoring in double figures this season, led by forward Brandon Weston, who is averaging nearly 15 points per game. The Tigers, under the guidance of coach Brian “Penny” Collins, are aiming to rebound from their previous loss and even their season record in this important HBCU matchup.

This is only the second meeting between Howard University and Tennessee State, with the Tigers winning their first encounter in 1986. Howard’s head coach, Kenneth Blakeney, now in his sixth season, has built a strong program, leading the Bison to two consecutive MEAC titles and NCAA Tournament appearances.

The HBCU All-Star Challenge provides a unique opportunity for Howard and TSU to represent their institutions and celebrate the legacy and competitiveness of HBCU basketball. After this game, Howard will travel to Miami to face FIU on November 18, continuing their non-conference schedule with the aim of further solidifying their place in HBCU sports history.

In a cloudy HBCU showdown at Greene Stadium, South Carolina State powered past Howard University with a decisive 38-14 victory to maintain control of the MEAC race. The matchup saw South Carolina State’s quarterback Eric Phoenix shine, delivering three touchdown passes, including a 63-yard bomb to Einaj Carter in the second quarter. With this win, South Carolina State remains undefeated in MEAC play and stands as a dominant force in HBCU football.

Howard struggled to gain offensive momentum despite a promising start, where Ja’Shawn Scroggins connected with Isiah Williams for a 10-yard touchdown to tie the game early. Scroggins found some success through the air, completing 15 of 30 passes for 161 yards and two touchdowns, but four costly interceptions halted Howard’s drive potential. Key moments, such as a 47-yard interception return touchdown by the Bulldog’s Jarod Washington underscored the defensive strength that kept Howard on the back foot throughout the game.

The Bulldog’s defense pressured the Bison relentlessly, with standout defensive performances from Kwantre Harry, who secured two interceptions, and Aaron Smith, who recorded eight tackles. Additionally, South Carolina State’s offensive line allowed Phoenix ample time to complete long passes, with another touchdown going to Keshawn Toney, widening the gap in the third quarter.

This win marks a strong momentum boost for South Carolina State as it prepares to face Morgan State next week. Meanwhile, Howard, now looking to regroup, will meet North Carolina Central in a critical matchup. With championship hopes slim, Howard University aims to bounce back and showcase resilience in their upcoming MEAC contest.

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Freshman Blake Harper (Washington) made his debut in grand fashion, leading his team with 16 points, but the depth and talent proved to be too much as the No. 1 Kansas Jayhawks defeated the Howard University men’s basketball team, 87-57, in the Second Annual John McLendon Classic at Allen Fieldhouse before 15,300.

A freshman out of Gonzaga College High School in D.C., Harper connected on 6-of-10 from the floor–including a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond the arc. The 6-foot-5 Harper also added four rebounds and three assists.

The top ranked Kansas Jayhawks (1-0) bolted to the sizeable early lead and were never threatened as they took a 46-19 at the half.

The Bison (0-1) had problems slowing down Kansas’ fast break, which produced 23 points. The Jayhawks also employed their three-point specialist Zeke Mayo, who hit on 7-of-12 from the field, including 5-of-8 from beyond the arc.

Howard’s primary scorers, Bryce Harris (Brentwood, N.Y.) and Marcus Dockery (Washington), combined for 11 points, 20 points below their average.

Graduate guard Anwar Gill (Washington), in his first season in a Bison uniform, contributed seven points and Jaren Johnson (Lynwood, Calif.) tallied six points in a losing effort.

Kansas was led by Mayo and Hunter Dickinson and Flory Bidunga, who contributed 16 points and 13 points, respectively.

“Winning in college basketball is hard, ” Howard University head coach Kenny Blakeney told Ed Hill in a preseason interview. “It can be a hard and long process. I like this group and am excited about the potential. This team is connected and has noticeable chemistry. We just have to stay in the moment and live in the past. I have been there before as an assistant to Mike Brey at Delaware. We won back-to-back America East tournament titles and then other factors set in with complacency. We have to avoid that.”

NEXT UP: Howard University continues its Midwest trip with a game at Missouri on Friday (Nov. 8). The game will be carried on the SEC Network.

]]>
The first week of HBCU football in the MEAC provided a clear look at team strengths, key players, and areas needing improvement. As the season unfolds, North Carolina Central and South Carolina State have emerged as top contenders, while other teams face challenges in offense and consistency. Here’s what we’ve learned about each team, the standout players making an impact, and their strengths and weaknesses.

North Carolina Central University (NCCU): The Class of the MEAC

Key Players: Walker Harris (QB), J’Mari Taylor (RB), Jaki Brevard (LB)

 • Strengths: Balanced, Adaptive Offense, Efficient Defense
 • Weaknesses: Depth in Secondary Pass Coverage

NCCU entered MEAC play as a preseason favorite, and its early performance has justified that ranking. Quarterback Walker Harris efficiently leads a balanced offense, skillfully blending passing with a strong ground game led by running back J’Mari Taylor, who is averaging close to 100 yards per game. On defense, linebacker Jaki Brevard anchors a disciplined unit that excels in third-down stops and red-zone play.

While NCCU’s defensive front is among the strongest in the MEAC, occasional lapses in secondary coverage could be tested by high-powered passing teams. Nonetheless, NCCU’s balanced and adaptable approach makes them the team to beat in the MEAC.

South Carolina State, MEAC, HBCU

South Carolina State University (SCSU): The Primary Challenger

Key Players: Eric Phoenix (QB), Caden High (WR), Jayden Broughton (DL)

 • Strengths: Explosive Offense, Strong Run Defense
 • Weaknesses: Vulnerabilities in Pass Defense

South Carolina State has emerged as the only real challenger to NCCU’s dominance. Quarterback Eric Phoenix is among the MEAC’s top quarterbacks, leading an offense with big-play potential, particularly with deep targets like wide receiver Caden High. SCSU’s passing game is explosive, creating consistent threats to score. Jayden Broughton, a dominant force on the defensive line, reinforces a strong run-stopping defense.

However, SCSU’s secondary has shown vulnerability, sometimes allowing big gains through the air. While their aggressive defensive approach creates turnovers, it can leave them exposed to strong passing attacks. For South Carolina State to compete at the top, tightening their pass defense will be essential.

Morgan State University: Defense Delivers, Offense Struggles

Key Players: Elijah Williams (DL), Arturo Mattocks (LB), Myles Miree (RB)

 • Strengths: Dominant Defense, Effective Pass Rush
 • Weaknesses: Limited Offensive Production

Morgan State’s defense, led by standout linemen Elijah Williams and linebacker Arturo Mattocks, has delivered on its preseason expectations, consistently generating pressure, tackles for loss, and quarterback sacks. Their defense has kept them competitive, making Morgan a tough opponent to score against.

However, its offense has struggled to produce points. Running back Myles Miree leads their conservative ground game, but limited passing success leaves them predictable. Morgan State’s success this season will hinge on whether they can generate more offensive yards to support their defense.

Howard University: Defensive Bright Spots, Inconsistent Quarterback Play

Key Players: Ja’Shawn Scroggins (QB), Kenny Gallop Jr. (S), Jarett Hunter (RB)

 • Strengths: Versatile Defense, Strong Pass Coverage
 • Weaknesses: Inconsistent Quarterback Play, Offensive Efficiency

Howard came into the season with high expectations, but inconsistent quarterback play from Ja’Shawn Scroggins has hampered offensive success. Scroggins’ struggles with accuracy have stalled drives, despite solid ground support from running back Jarett Hunter. On defense, safety Kenny Gallop Jr. has been a consistent playmaker, leading a strong pass defense that generates turnovers.

While Howard’s defense is effective at limiting high-scoring opponents, the team’s success will depend on more reliable quarterback play. If Scroggins can improve his decision-making, Howard has the potential to challenge the MEAC’s top teams.

Delaware State University: Consistent but Limited

Key Players: Jaden Sutton (RB), Marqui Adams (QB), Kahleef Jimmison (LB)

 • Strengths: Steady Rushing Game, Disciplined Defense
 • Weaknesses: Limited Passing Attack, Depth on Defense

Delaware State’s performance closely aligns with preseason expectations. Running back Jaden Sutton anchors a solid rushing game, while quarterback Marqui Adams provides steady, if not high-scoring, support. Linebacker Kahleef Jimmison leads a disciplined defense, but the team’s lack of depth in the secondary leaves them vulnerable against passing-focused teams.

For Delaware State to advance in the MEAC standings, they’ll need more offensive balance and defensive depth. Their strong running game has kept them competitive, but limited passing potential may hinder them against the conference’s top teams.

Norfolk State University: The Spoilers

Key Players: AJ Richardson (LB), Daylan Long (DB), Kevon King (RB)

 • Strengths: Effective Ground Game, Turnover Generation
 • Weaknesses: Inconsistent Passing, Defensive Depth

Norfolk State has shown potential as a dark horse in the MEAC, with linebacker AJ Richardson and defensive back Daylan Long leading a turnover-generating defense. Running back Kevon King drives their offense with a solid ground game. However, their passing game lacks consistency, limiting their scoring potential, especially against well-rounded defenses.

Norfolk State could create surprises in the MEAC standings if it establish a more reliable passing game. If it continues improving, it could upset the top teams and play spoiler as the HBCU season progresses.

Week 1 Takeaways and MEAC Outlook

Top Teams and Key Differences: North Carolina Central and South Carolina State have set the standard in MEAC HBCU football. NCCU’s balanced offense and South Carolina State’s big-play passing game position them as frontrunners. Morgan State’s stout defense is keeping them competitive, though offensive limitations hold them back. Howard’s season will hinge on improved quarterback play, while Delaware State and Norfolk State show potential to surprise as underdogs.

Key Players Defining MEAC Football: Quarterbacks Walker Harris (NCCU) and Eric Phoenix (SCSU) are driving the top offenses in the MEAC, while running backs like Jaden Sutton (Delaware State) and Myles Miree (Morgan State) are crucial to their teams’ ground games. Defensive leaders like Elijah Williams (Morgan State) and Kenny Gallop Jr. (Howard) are making key plays that keep their teams in the fight.

Early-season trends suggest North Carolina Central is the team to beat, with South Carolina State’s high-powered offense close behind as the HBCU national title picture takes shape. If teams like Morgan State, Howard, and Norfolk State can address offensive challenges, the MEAC season promises close games and potential upsets. Week 1 has set the stage for a dynamic season in HBCU football, with each team shaping its path in MEAC standings.

Norfolk State secured a thrilling 21-20 Homecoming win over Howard in front of a sold-out crowd at William “Dick” Price Stadium, showcasing the strength and excitement of HBCU football. This victory, Norfolk State’s (3-6, 1-1 MEAC) first Homecoming win since 2021, came despite Howard’s (3-5, 0-1 MEAC) statistical advantage, with the Bison outgaining Norfolk 371 to 287 in total yards.

Howard struck first, as quarterback Ja’Shawn Scroggins broke free for a 48-yard touchdown, giving the Bison an early edge. Norfolk answered immediately with Jaylen White’s electrifying 97-yard kickoff return touchdown, which brought the crowd to its feet and re-energized the Spartans. Despite the Bison’s lead, Norfolk’s defense, bolstered by Terron Mallory’s red-zone interception, stymied Howard’s offensive momentum, leaving the Spartans within reach at halftime.

Norfolk State Howard

In the third quarter, Norfolk State took charge as Xzavion Evans powered through Howard’s defense for a crucial 16-yard touchdown, putting Norfolk ahead 14-10. Howard countered, with Scroggins finding Jamel Stewart for a goal-line touchdown pass, reclaiming the lead at 17-14. Kevon King stepped up for Norfolk, rushing for 78 yards and sealing the game with a 4-yard touchdown run in the final quarter.

Howard’s Dylan West narrowed the gap with a field goal, bringing the score to 21-20, but Norfolk State’s clock management and defense prevailed. A final play by Javontay Martin, who sacked Scroggins as time expired, clinched Norfolk’s win over their HBCU rival.

Norfolk State now heads to Baltimore to take on Morgan State, hoping to carry forward the momentum, while Howard regroups for their next MEAC matchup, determined to make a comeback.

]]>
This weekend, Howard University takes on Norfolk State University in a pivotal MEAC showdown. Both HBCU programs aim to gain ground in the conference standings, and this game could be the turning point for their seasons. With Norfolk State looking to notch its first conference win and Howard seeking to build on their MEAC success, this game is set to be an intense battle.

Howard University, with a 3-4 record, is coming off a tough 27-14 loss to Tennessee State but has the offensive firepower to make a strong MEAC run. Norfolk State, at 2-6, is determined to reverse their fortunes after a close 28-23 loss to Towson in their last outing. Both teams view this matchup as critical for setting the tone in the latter half of the HBCU season.

For Howard, the offense is led by dual-threat quarterback Ja’Shawn Scroggins, who has delivered through the air and on the ground. Scroggins has racked up 326 rushing yards and 389 passing yards over five games. His connection with wide receiver Kasey Hawthorne—who has hauled in four touchdowns this season—will be essential to the Bison’s success.

Additionally, Jarret Hunter, Howard’s physical running back, has been vital in providing offensive balance. Howard coach Larry Scott emphasized Hunter’s importance, saying, “He’s starting to peak and play his best football, right when we need it”?.

Norfolk State will look to Jalen Daniels at quarterback. Daniels, with 831 passing yards this season, provides a dual-threat option that will keep Howard’s defense on edge. The Spartans also rely heavily on Kevon King, their star running back, who has rushed for 518 yards with an impressive 6.3 yards per carry?.

Key Matchups

 1. Howard’s Passing Game vs. Norfolk State’s Secondary Howard’s aerial attack, featuring Scroggins and Hawthorne, will face a Norfolk State secondary that has allowed 225.38 passing yards per game. Norfolk defensive back Ricky Harleston, with two interceptions this season, will need to step up to limit Howard’s deep-threat potential.
 2. Kevon King vs. Howard’s Run Defense Norfolk State’s Kevon King, averaging 74 rushing yards per game, will be a focal point for Norfolk’s offense. Howard’s defense, which allows 168.9 rushing yards per game, must contain King to prevent the Spartans from controlling the pace.
 3. Jarret Hunter vs. Norfolk State’s Front Seven Howard’s Jarret Hunter will look to test Norfolk’s run defense, which has struggled at times this season. “We’ve got to execute base calls, stay in front of the chains,” said Howard coach Larry Scott, emphasizing the importance of keeping the offense on schedule?.
 4. Jalen Daniels vs. The Bison Defense Norfolk State’s Jalen Daniels presents a threat both in the air and on the ground. Coach Dawson Odums acknowledged the challenge Howard’s defense will pose but stressed the importance of limiting mistakes. “We’re walking into a hornet’s nest,” Odums said, speaking about the energy Howard will bring?.

Keys to Victory

Howard University:

 • Balanced Attack: Howard needs to establish rhythm through the air and on the ground. Scroggins’ mobility paired with Hunter’s physicality in the run game will be essential to keeping Norfolk off-balance.
 • Red Zone Efficiency: Howard has converted 19 of 28 red-zone trips into scores this season. They’ll need to maintain that efficiency to capitalize on every opportunity.
 • Limit Kevon King: Containing Norfolk’s run game will be key for Howard. If they allow King to control the pace, Norfolk could dominate possession and limit Howard’s offensive opportunities.

Norfolk State University:

 • Control the Clock: Norfolk must lean on Kevon King to establish a strong running game and control the time of possession. This will keep Howard’s explosive offense off the field.
 • Jalen Daniels’ Decision-Making: Daniels must protect the football and avoid costly turnovers. Red zone efficiency has been an issue for Norfolk, and they need to capitalize on their scoring opportunities.
 • Turnovers and Field Position: Norfolk State’s defense will need to create turnovers and take advantage of field position, especially against a Howard team that can score quickly.

Conclusion

This MEAC clash between Howard University and Norfolk State University is a critical game for both HBCU programs. Howard aims to build on their offensive weapons in Ja’Shawn Scroggins, Kasey Hawthorne, and Jarret Hunter, while Norfolk State hopes to leverage Jalen Daniels and Kevon King to control the game’s tempo.

Norfolk head coach Dawson Odums understands the importance of this game: “We’re walking into a place that’s going to have a lot of energy. It’s homecoming, and we know we’re going to have our hands full,” he said, emphasizing the challenges of facing a fired-up Howard team?.

Both teams are eager to secure a win and make their mark in the MEAC, and this game will likely be decided by which team can execute their game plan with the fewest mistakes.

Tennessee State spoiled HBCU for Howard University’s centennial homecoming celebration in Washington, D.C., with a commanding 27-14 win in front of a sold-out Greene Stadium on Saturday.

The victory elevated Tennessee State to 6-2 on the season, while Howard fell to 3-4. Under the leadership of head coach Eddie George, Tennessee State now boasts a 21-20 record, continuing their strong season with an undefeated October run.

Quarterback Draylen Ellis powered TSU’s offense, throwing for 289 yards and rushing for 28 yards and a touchdown. His top target, Karate Brenson, had an impressive day, reeling in five catches for 153 yards. The TSU defense dominated the game, holding Howard’s offense to just 209 total yards, including a mere 33 yards through the air. The Tigers forced two turnovers, which they converted into six points, highlighting their ability to capitalize on mistakes.

Howard, a cornerstone HBCU in Washington, D.C., faced intense pressure from the TSU defense, suffering four sacks and two interceptions. Despite Howard’s Jarett Hunter rushing for 102 yards and a touchdown, the Bison could not overcome Tennessee State’s early lead.

The win further cements TSU’s place among HBCU football programs this season, as the Tigers outgained Howard 412-209 and controlled the game with solid performances on both sides of the ball. Tennessee State’s defense, including standout performances from Jalen McClendon and Tyler Jones, helped preserve their lead and ultimately secure the victory.

Tennessee State will have a bye week before hosting UT Martin on November 2 at Nissan Stadium, aiming to continue their strong campaign among HBCU powerhouses.

He ultimately committed to Howard University, where he played 51 games averaging 9.9 pounds and 4.1 rebounds and helped the HBCU basketball program return to relevance. Odom’s career got off to a fast start as he was named the MEAC Rookie of the Year and Tournament MVP in 2022-23 averaging 10.9 points and 4.6 rebounds in 31 games while helping the team win the MEAC title.

The rising junior forward also was the MEAC Preseason Player of the Year prior to the 2023-24 season. He suffered through nagging injuries on the season, averaging 8.4 points in 20 games.

He hit the transfer portal following the season, ultimately landing slightly closer to home in Vermont.

The 6’6, 230-pound forward will look to build on the foundation he started with at his HBCU.
