Morgan State basketball player Tytan Newton, an HBCU athlete from Stockbridge, Georgia, is reportedly dating reality star Chrisean Rock, according to a new viral video making its rounds online. The footage shows the two kissing intimately, and Rock added fuel to the fire by posting a photo of the pair with the caption “My babbyyy” to her Instagram Story.

The relationship marks a new chapter for Chrisean Rock, who recently ended her long and often chaotic romance with rapper Blueface. Interestingly enough, Blueface has his own HBCU connection—he once played quarterback at Fayetteville State University before trading in a football uniform for the stage. Now, it appears Rock has traded one HBCU athlete for another.

Tytan Newton, nicknamed “Figgy,” is a Business Management major at Morgan State University, an HBCU located in Baltimore. He’s set to graduate in May 2025 and aspires to become an engineer. Though he averaged just 1.4 points per game during the 2024-2025 season, he made headlines by scoring 41 points during his JUCO days at Panola College. Newton chose Morgan State simply because he liked the school, and he cites Allen Iverson as his biggest influence.

While social media reactions to the new couple have been mixed, many fans are happy to see Chrisean Rock moving on with someone who seems low-key and grounded. Whether this is a long-term relationship or a temporary flame, the HBCU world is once again brushing shoulders with the entertainment spotlight.

BALTIMORE, Md. (April 9, 2025) — In a move that underscores the strength and rising visibility of HBCU athletics, Morgan State University has hired Nadine Domond as the new head coach of its women’s basketball program. Domond arrives at Morgan from Virginia State University, making the transition from a successful stint at a Division II HBCU to take the reins at a Division I HBCU.

The announcement comes just days after a high-profile NCAA Tournament weekend and during the inaugural Women’s HBCU All-Star Game—an event where Domond served as one of the first coaches. Her hire represents a the growing pipeline of coaching talent emerging from HBCU programs.

Domond led Virginia State to back-to-back 20-win seasons and guided the program to its first-ever appearance in the NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball Tournament. In 2024–25, her team finished with a 21-5 regular season record, won the CIAA Northern Division, and reached the CIAA Championship Game. Her teams were known for defensive toughness, ranking 16th nationally in opponent field goal percentage and allowing just 60 points per game.

Her success was recognized with several honors, including CIAA Women’s Basketball Coach of the Year and HBCU All-Stars Lonnie Bartley NCAA Division II National Coach of the Year.

“Morgan has always been a place where excellence is not only expected but cultivated—and that is exactly what we see in Coach Nadine Domond,” said Morgan State President David K. Wilson. “She brings a championship mindset, a proven track record of developing women both on and off the court, and a vision that aligns perfectly with our aspirations for the Lady Bears.”

Nadine Domond, Morgan State, HBCU

Domond brings experience from every level of basketball. As a player, she starred at the University of Iowa under Hall of Fame coach C. Vivian Stringer, where she was a Second Team All-Big Ten selection, a Big Ten champion, and a three-time NCAA Tournament participant. She also won a silver medal with USA Basketball in 1997 and was selected 19th overall by the New York Liberty in the 1998 WNBA Draft. She later played for the Sacramento Monarchs and was inducted into the Connecticut Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in 2019.

Her coaching career began at Hampton University, another HBCU, and included stops at Rutgers, Grambling State—where she was named SWAC Coach of the Year in 2015—and most recently, Virginia State.

“Coach Domond brings a level of excellence that is consistent with the direction we are taking our athletic programs at Morgan,” said Dena Freeman-Patton, Morgan’s vice president and director for Intercollegiate Athletics.

“Her success as both a coach and a player, her ability to recruit and connect within the DMV, and her commitment to building young women into champions on and off the court made her the clear choice.”

Domond succeeds longtime head coach Ed Davis Jr., who retired following the 2024–25 season after a 33-year collegiate coaching career. Under Davis, the Lady Bears captured a share of the MEAC regular-season title in 2022 but have yet to earn a Division I NCAA Tournament appearance.

“I’m incredibly honored to join Morgan State University as the next head coach of the Lady Bears,” Domond said. “This opportunity comes at the perfect time—not just in my journey but in the evolution of women’s college basketball and the rise of HBCU programs across the country.”

Her hire is the fourth major coaching selection made by Freeman-Patton since 2022, following appointments in football, wrestling, and acrobatics and tumbling. Morgan State is expected to formally introduce Domond in a press conference on campus in the coming weeks.

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Penn Relays Carnival is gearing up to celebrate a new class of legends. It is announcing the inductees for its prestigious 2025 Wall of Fame. This year’s honorees comprise four exceptional individuals and two remarkable relay teams, including a record-breaking HBCU relay team from Morgan State. Their contributions to the Carnival have left an indelible mark on the event’s rich history.

The formal induction ceremony is set to be a highlight of the 2025 Penn Relays. It will take place on the final day, Saturday, April 26th, at the iconic Franklin Field. Providing a fitting stage to recognize and celebrate these athletes’ outstanding achievements.

Morgan State’s fabled 1950 record-breaking 4×440 yard Championship of America relay team will be inducted into the Penn Relays Wall of Fame. The HBCU foursome consisted of Samuel LaBeach, Robert Tyler, William Brown, and George Rhoden.

HBCU Penn Relays Morgan State
Record Breakers

In 1950, Morgan’s sensational quartet ran off with the prize race at the Penn Relay Carnival in the record-breaking time of 3:13.6, breaking the previous Penn Relays record of 3:14.8 that had stood since 1939. The team featured LaBeach (49.9), Tyler (48.7), Brown (47.5), and Rhoden (47.5), giving Morgan its first victory at the Penn Relays and vindicated themselves for a disqualification that had deprived them of the same honor in 1949.

In 1949, the Morgan foursome’s track prowess was undeniable, having decisively outpaced a formidable field, including Cornell, NYU, Georgetown, Army, Manhattan, and Villanova. However, a controversial ruling snatched victory from their grasp. Despite finishing behind the Morgan team. NYU was awarded the win based on a claim that LaBeach, a member of the Morgan quartet, had illegally used his hands on the initial turn. Allegedly jeopardizing his team’s qualification. The sting of the decision was amplified by the significant margin of victory. NYU, timed at 3:15.6, trailed the Bears by approximately 20 yards. Giving rise to the presumption Morgan must have done close to a 3.14 for their triumph.

After Morgan’s 1950 breakthrough victory, the Bears established a dynasty, claiming four more 4×440 titles over the next 32 years. This period solidified Morgan’s reputation as a sprinting relay national powerhouse in collegiate track throughout the 1950s.

Nationwide Attention

The HBCU team continued to win at the prestigious Melrose Games in New York City and other meets throughout the country. The historic four ran a 3:09.4 at the Los Angeles Coliseum Relays, two seconds off the World Record. Morgan State College gained widespread recognition. Sports Illustrated, Time Magazine, Ebony Magazine, and the Afro-American Newspaper featured the team in their publications. The foursome became goodwill ambassadors for Morgan, both nationally and internationally.

The Penn Relays Wall of Fame was created in 1994 to celebrate the Carnival’s 100th running. The class of 2025 brings the number of inductees to 130 individuals and 117 relay teams. This year’s individuals and relay squads were selected by a panel of Penn Relays experts. Inductees are honored solely for their accomplishments at the Penn Relays; achievements in any other meets are not considered. The Penn Relays office will accept nominations of relay teams and individuals at any time and from any interested party.

The annual Circle City Classic will include two new teams when the HBCU battle takes place in September.

Morgan State and Miles College will clash on Sept. 27 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. It marks the first time both teams will play in the longtime HBCU classic. The bands — Purple Marching Machine and the Magnificent Marching Machine — will also join their respective teams for the popular HBCU showdown.

Alice Watson, the president and CEO of Indiana Black Expo, said that it is important “now more than ever to bring HBCU talent and exposure to the Midwest.”

“We hope that alumni and new fans alike will come out to Lucas Oil Stadium to support not only the tradition of the HBCU football game but also celebrate the talented bands,” Watson said in a press release.

In the 2024 campaign, Morgan State finished 6-6 and 3-2 in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play while Miles notched an unprecedented season. The Golden Bears finished 14-3 including a perfect 12-0 mark in Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action. Miles made a second round appearance in the NCAA Division II playoffs and finished with a national ranking for the first time in program history.

This season, former NFL’s Indianapolis Colts player Chris Goode will enter his first year at the helm of the Golden Bears’ program after former head coach Sam Shade departed Miles to become the football coach at Alabama A&M.

North Carolina Central played in the last two editions of the Circle City Classic. Last season, NCCU defeated Norfolk State 37-10.

Norfolk, Va. – For more than 30 years, Coach Ed Davis Jr. has been a key figure in HBCU basketball, making his mark in the MEAC and beyond. From Bowie State to Delaware State to Morgan State, he built winning programs, developed strong players, and helped shape the future of the game.

As he retires from coaching, Davis reflects on his long and successful career.

“I’ve been in the MEAC since 2000. I had some great teams at Delaware State, had some great teams here (Morgan State), and in the CIAA. My career has been blessed.”

His time in the CIAA and MEAC brought championships, NCAA Tournament appearances, and many great moments. But beyond the wins and titles, his greatest achievement has been the players he coached and mentored.

A Player First: Davis’ Roots in HBCU Basketball

Before becoming a coaching legend, Ed Davis Jr. was a standout player at West Virginia State College. He was a four-year letterwinner on the men’s basketball team, which set NCAA and NAIA scoring records in the late 1960s and early 1970s. His experience as a player gave him first-hand knowledge of the game at a high level, shaping his approach as a coach.

Davis later pursued higher education at two prestigious HBCUs. He earned his bachelor’s degree in education from West Virginia State College and a master’s degree in education from Howard University. His dedication to both athletics and academics highlights his lifelong commitment to developing well-rounded student-athletes.

In recognition of his on-court success, he was inducted into the West Virginia State Athletics Hall of Fame in October 2008.

Building a Winner at Bowie State

Davis began his head coaching career at Bowie State University in 1993. Over eight seasons, he turned the Bulldogs into a powerhouse, finishing with a 171-54 record. His teams won three CIAA championships and made three NCAA Tournament appearances.

Between 1995 and 1999, Bowie State was nearly unstoppable, posting an incredible 110-10 record over four years. His teams played tough, disciplined basketball, a style that would define his career.

HBCU MEAC
Making History at Delaware State

In 2000, Davis took over at Delaware State University, where he became the school’s all-time winningest coach in women’s basketball. He led the Lady Hornets to 171 wins and guided them to four 20-win seasons, the only ones in program history.

His biggest moment came in 2007 when he led Delaware State to its first MEAC Tournament championship and NCAA Tournament appearance. It was a historic achievement for the program and HBCU basketball.

Restoring Morgan State’s Competitiveness

Davis joined Morgan State University in 2012 as an assistant coach before taking over the program in 2015. Over the years, he helped rebuild the Lady Bears into a MEAC contender.

His biggest accomplishment at Morgan State came in 2022 when the Lady Bears won their first-ever MEAC regular-season title. His teams also appeared in the WNIT (Women’s National Invitational Tournament), keeping Morgan State competitive at a national level.

More Than Just a Coach

For Davis, basketball was always about more than just the game. He was a mentor, a leader, and a role model to his players. He pushed them to work hard, stay disciplined, and be prepared for life beyond basketball.

At his final MEAC Tournament postgame press conference, Davis spoke about his love for the game and his desire to bring one more championship to Morgan State.

“I’m not going to lie, this is probably the only HBCU I have not won a championship at. All the others I have. I wanted them to experience what it’s like to be on the other side, go to the NCAA, and be able to pull that banner down on that floor.”

Even as he steps away, his players and former athletes continue to support him.

“For me to see girls out there from Delaware State, Bowie State—that means a lot to me because these girls are now 30 and 40 years old and they still coming back to support me. That means a lot. It really does.”

A Lasting Legacy in HBCU Basketball

Davis has already been honored for his contributions. He was inducted into Bowie State’s Hall of Fame in 2014, and in November 2024, he was inducted into the Delaware State Athletics Hall of Fame.

Few coaches have left a mark on HBCU basketball the way Ed Davis Jr. has. From CIAA dominance to MEAC success, he built strong programs and helped shape generations of athletes.

As he moves on from coaching, his influence will continue to be felt across HBCU basketball.

A true legend leaves the court, but his impact remains.

NORFOLK, VA – The MEAC Tournament delivered an emotional thriller as Perry Smith Jr. led the charge for ninth-seeded North Carolina Central University (NCCU), helping the HBCU to a 79-77 upset victory over eighth-seeded Delaware State at Scope Arena.

The dramatic finish came down to the final seconds, with Isaac Parson delivering the decisive layup with just one second remaining, breaking a 77-77 tie. Smith, however, was the driving force behind NCCU’s inspired performance, finishing with 22 points on a near-perfect 7-for-9 shooting night, complemented by an immaculate 8-for-8 from the free throw line.

Yet Smith’s performance transcended basketball, driven by a deeply personal mission. His younger sister is currently battling cancer, an emotional burden that has weighed heavily on him throughout the season.

“My little sis, we’re very close, and my family is very devastated,” Smith said after the game. “This is a very hard time, but basketball has become my escape, my therapy. I play for my sister because I know she’s watching.”

North Carolina Central, HBCU Gameday, MEAC

North Carolina Central head coach LeVelle Moton expressed profound admiration for Smith’s resilience.

“For Perry to just be out here and still on this team says a lot about his character. He’s fighting through things most people can’t imagine. He’s playing for something bigger, and he knows it,” Moton said. “My grandmother told me the two most important days of your life are the day you were born and the day you figure out why. I think Perry has figured out why now.”

In a tightly contested game marked by nine ties and four lead changes, NCCU relied on emotional resilience and critical free throws down the stretch. Delaware State fought valiantly, led by Muneer Newton’s game-high 27 points and Martaz Robinson’s clutch 20-point performance. But NCCU’s determination proved insurmountable.

This victory propels NCCU into the MEAC quarterfinals, it will face second-seeded South Carolina State. Riding a scorching 10-game winning streak, the Orangeburg, SC-based HBCU represents a formidable challenge. Still, Smith and the Eagles remain focused, inspired, and ready to continue their improbable run through the MEAC Tournament.

Both teams are determined to advance to the MEAC Championship, having split their regular-season contests and looking to settle the score once and for all.

MEAC Matchup Breakdown

Morgan State (14-17, 7-7 MEAC) enters with a potent offense that ranks among the best in the conference, averaging nearly 81 points per game. Norfolk State (22-10, 11-3 MEAC), on the other hand, showcases a robust defensive unit that has consistently held opponents under 70 points per contest.

NSU, the tournament’s top seed, took care of business against Maryland Eastern Shore on Wednesday night and had Thursday off.

Morgan State had to battle to the wire to defeat Howard University in the quarterfinals.

Players to Watch

  • Morgan State Bears’ Standouts:
    • Kameron Hobbs: Fresh off an impressive 33-point performance against Howard, Hobbs leads the Bears’ attack with an average of 16.6 points per game.
    • Will Thomas: A versatile forward averaging 14.3 points per game, essential for both scoring and rebounding.
    • Daniel Akitoby: A powerful presence on the boards, averaging 7.3 rebounds per game, crucial for second-chance opportunities
      .
  • Norfolk State Spartans’ Key Defenders:
    • Brian Moore Jr.: Norfolk State’s top scorer averaging 18.7 points per game, notable for his efficiency and clutch plays.
    • Christian Ings: Exceptional sharpshooter, converting nearly 50% from three-point range, stretching opposing defenses.
    • Jalen Myers: An influential player contributing 11 points and nearly six rebounds per game, vital for controlling the game’s pace.

Crucial Game-Changers

  • Morgan State’s Bench Production: Contributions from Amahrie Simpkins and Kiran Oliver will be critical to match Norfolk State’s depth and sustain offensive pressure.
  • Norfolk State’s Reserve Impact: Terrance Jones and Chris Fields Jr. must make significant bench contributions to ensure stability, particularly if starters encounter foul trouble.

Winning Strategies

  • Morgan State: The Bears must utilize their high-scoring offense to exploit the Spartans’ vulnerability from beyond the arc and maintain defensive composure throughout.
  • Norfolk State: The Spartans need their stout defense to dominate the boards, limit Morgan State’s second-chance points, and effectively defend the perimeter.

The Stakes are High

This semifinal showdown not only determines who advances to the MEAC Championship but also serves as a critical moment for each team’s postseason aspirations. Norfolk State holds a slight edge due to its defensive discipline and the home-court atmosphere, but Morgan State’s explosive offense could create the upset.

Anticipate a very competitive HBCU basketball battle filled with passion, intensity, and possibly a dramatic conclusion.

Morgan State wrestling made history with its first-ever appearance in the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) Championships, marking a significant milestone for the only HBCU competing in Division I wrestling. Returning to the sport after nearly three decades, the Bears entered the EIWA Championships looking to make an impact against some of the toughest competition in collegiate wrestling.

Morgan State Earns Three EIWA Place Winners

Competing against powerhouse programs like Lehigh, Army, and Navy, Morgan State finished 11th out of 12 teams but walked away with three EIWA place winners, setting the stage for future success.

Xavier Doolin (285 lbs) led the way with a 4th-place finish, becoming Morgan State’s highest placer in the tournament. Doolin showcased his strength early, securing a decisive 8-1 victory over Navy’s Jake Lucas before falling to Lehigh’s Owen Trephan in the semifinals. He battled through the consolation bracket before dropping a 10-4 decision to Army’s Brady Colbert in the 3rd-place match. Doolin’s top-four finish is a strong sign that Morgan State’s heavyweight division is ready to compete at the highest level in the EIWA.

HBCU Morgan State EIWA

At 125 pounds, Julian Dawson secured an 8th-place finish, reaching the placement rounds but falling in his final match to Navy’s Nick Treaster by tech fall (15-0). Similarly, Cooper Lockhart (165 lbs) placed 8th, displaying resilience throughout the tournament before losing by fall to Drexel’s Cody Walsh (2:00) in the 7th-place match.

A Strong First Step for Morgan State Wrestling

Although the Bears did not produce any NCAA qualifiers, their first showing in the EIWA Championships proved they could compete at the Division I level. With three place winners, including a top-four heavyweight, Morgan State is laying the foundation for a program that can elevate HBCU wrestling on the national stage.

Morgan State wrestling’s journey is just beginning, and with continued development, the Bears are poised to make even greater strides in future EIWA Championships.

BALTIMORE, Md. — Morgan State University’s HBCU wrestling program is bolstering its coaching staff with a familiar face. Head Coach Kenny Monday announced today the appointment of his son, Kennedy Monday, as an assistant coach.

This addition brings a fresh perspective and a wealth of experience to the Bears’ program. Kennedy, a decorated wrestler in his own right, is expected to contribute significantly to the team’s training regimen, recruitment efforts, and overall strategic development.

“We’re extremely excited to add Kennedy to our Morgan State wrestling staff as a competition analyst and performance breakdown specialist, said Monday. “He has been instrumental in the team’s preparation as we head into the EIWA conference tournament March 6-7.”

Monday added to Kennedy’s accolades that extend beyond collegiate wrestling. “Kennedy is also competing on the USAW Senior Level Circuit, an Olympic hopeful training for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.”

It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we share the news regarding the passing of Sterling Steward, Senior Associate Athletics Director/Chief Revenue Officer at Baltimore-HBCU Morgan State University, on February 26, 2025. Since joining the Morgan State Athletics Department in December 2022, Sterling played a vital role in advancing our programs, fostering partnerships, and strengthening the department’s financial and operational success. His leadership, vision, and unwavering dedication left an indelible mark on our student-athletes, staff, and the entire Morgan community.

“Sterling was more than a colleague—he was a respected leader, mentor, and friend,” said Dena Freeman-Patton, Vice President and Director for Intercollegiate Athletics. “His passion for athletics and his commitment to elevating Morgan’s programs were evident in all that he did. He worked tirelessly to ensure our student-athletes had the resources and opportunities to excel, and his impact will be felt for years to come. We extend our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones, especially his three sons and sister, as we mourn this tremendous loss.”

Sterling’s time at Morgan was marked by strategic growth and collaboration, particularly in his work with the Division of Institutional Advancement, where he helped expand opportunities and build lasting relationships to support the University’s athletic programs. His contributions and legacy will continue to inspire us.

Sterling was also the athletics director at Georgia-HBCU Savannah State University from 2011 to 2018. While there, Steward oversaw 15 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I sports. During his tenure at SSU, the Tigers won Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Championships in men’s basketball, baseball, and women’s basketball, along with individual championships in men’s golf, tennis, and track & field.

Steward spent a year at Mississippi Valley State University in 2011 as the Senior Compliance Consultant for Athletics Administration. He served as the interim Director of Athletics/Associate Director of Athletics for Compliance at Alabama State University from 2009-10. Steward began his professional career at Xavier University in New Orleans as the Assistant Director of Athletics for Administration/Director of Recreational Sports.

BALTIMORE — Morgan State University’s Board of Regents has approved the University’s decision to opt into the House v. NCAA settlement, a landmark resolution addressing past restrictions on student-athlete compensation. By opting in, Morgan joins other institutions committed to a more sustainable and equitable model for collegiate athletics while securing protections from future litigation related to name, image, and likeness (NIL) restrictions. Morgan State is a is a Carnegie-classified high research (R2) HBCU located in Baltimore, Maryland.

The House v. NCAA settlement, valued at over $2.7 billion, is designed to compensate former and current college athletes who were denied NIL opportunities before the NCAA changed its policies in 2021. The settlement also establishes a revenue-sharing framework, allowing institutions to allocate resources directly to student-athletes while maintaining competitive and compliant athletic programs.

“Morgan’s decision to opt into the House v. NCAA settlement reflects our unwavering commitment to student-athlete success and our proactive approach to navigating the evolving landscape of collegiate athletics,” said David K. Wilson, president of Morgan State University. “With the full support of our Board of Regents, we believe this decision is in the best interest of our institution, ensuring compliance, stability, and new opportunities for our student-athletes moving forward.”

As part of the settlement, the HBCU will contribute an estimated $231,227 to the payout fund and adhere to the new roster and scholarship limits. While adjustments will be made to team sizes—including reducing the football roster from 130 to 105 players—the University will have the flexibility to expand opportunities in Olympic sports under Title IX compliance. Additionally, Morgan will have institutional control over NIL revenue-sharing and access to alternative funding sources, such as foundation and university-driven revenue initiatives, to enhance student-athlete support. Other team sports to experience roster limits include men’s and women’s basketball and tennis teams.

“Opting in ensures that we remain competitive while continuing to prioritize the well-being and success of our student-athletes,” said Dena Freeman-Patton, vice president and director for Intercollegiate Athletics at Morgan. “This decision allows us to leverage institutional resources strategically, invest in our programs, and create pathways for financial support beyond traditional NIL opportunities. Ultimately, this strengthens our ability to recruit, retain, and support the next generation of Morgan Bear athletes.”

Under the settlement’s provisions, Power Five conference schools were automatically included, while other Division I institutions had until March 1 to opt in individually or through their athletic conferences. The Baltimore HBCU is a member of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) and made the independent decision to opt in, recognizing the opportunity to maintain compliance, strengthen athletic programs, and invest in the overall student-athlete experience.

As collegiate athletics continue to evolve, Morgan remains committed to fostering a transformative student-athlete experience, prioritizing compliance, and ensuring long-term program viability.

]BALTIMORE, Md. — The Morgan State Acrobatics & Tumbling team is set to make history on Saturday, February 15, as they travel to the West Coast for the first time in the history of the HBCU program.

The Bears will take on the No. 4-ranked University of Oregon in Eugene, marking a pivotal moment in their journey within the National Collegiate Acrobatics & Tumbling Association (NCATA).

The Bears enter the matchup following a hard-fought battle against No. 2 Quinnipiac, where they fell 270.565 to 246.745. Despite the loss, Morgan made waves in the sport by becoming the first team to successfully execute a split during an acrobatics and tumbling routine.

Freshman Lauren Perkins stood at the center of the groundbreaking moment, flawlessly pulling the split and helping cement Morgan’s reputation as an HBCU program on the rise.

With this milestone performance, the Bears have set the tone for the rest of their season. The team remains focused on refining their routines, building on their strengths, and pushing the boundaries of what they can accomplish in NCATA competition.

Awaiting them on the West Coast is a powerhouse Oregon squad, led by head coach Taylor Susnara. A former Oregon All-American and assistant coach, Susnara has helped maintain the Ducks’ legacy as one of the sport’s top programs. Known for their skill, strategy, and precision, Oregon finished last season with a 4-4 record and is looking to establish dominance early in 2025.

Morgan State University football is building something special, and this 2025 recruiting class feels like a big step toward making the Bears a real HBCU football powerhouse. After finishing 6-6 last season, Morgan State showed flashes of what it could become, but there were still gaps to fill. Head coach Damon Wilson wasted no time addressing those needs, bringing in 29 new players, a balanced mix of 15 transfers and 14 high school signees. With a deeper roster and new talent at key positions, this team has a chance to take the next step and push for a MEAC championship in 2025.

A New Quarterback Could Change Everything

One of the most exciting battles this offseason will be who takes over at quarterback. Last season, Morgan State’s passing game had its struggles, finishing with just 11 passing touchdowns in 12 games. The Bears needed a leader who could open up the offense, and they may have found him in Raeden Oliver.

Oliver, a transfer from Rutgers and Monroe College, brings the kind of big-play ability that Morgan State has been missing. He threw for 1,429 yards and 13 touchdowns in just nine games last season, showing that he can push the ball downfield. He’s got the arm strength to stretch defenses and the mobility to extend plays, something that could bring a new dynamic to this offense. But he won’t have the job handed to him. Josiah Bushnell, a transfer from Air Force Prep, will also be in the mix, competing alongside returning quarterbacks Duce Taylor and Tahj Smith. Bushnell comes from an option-heavy system, so if he wins the job, expect more designed quarterback runs.

Whoever wins the battle will have more weapons than Morgan State University has had in years.

Bigger, Faster, Stronger at Wide Receiver

Morgan State made it clear it wanted to get bigger and faster on the outside, signing seven wide receivers, including some serious HBCU football playmakers. The Bears averaged just 10.74 yards per catch last season, struggling to create explosive plays in the passing game. That should change with the arrival of Malachi Bryant (6’3”, 210), Cam’ron Jones (6’3”, 184), and Williams Johns (6’3”, 182).

Bryant is a strong, physical receiver who will be a red-zone threat from Day 1. Jones is a true deep threat who can take the top off a defense. Johns has great body control and reliable hands, giving the Bears a balanced group of targets for their new quarterback.

For Morgan State to compete at the highest level of HBCU football, it needed to become more explosive offensively, and this class gives them the pieces to make that happen.

The Trenches Are Ready for a Fight

Football games are won and lost in the trenches, and Morgan State invested heavily in its offensive and defensive lines. The offensive line gave up 29 sacks last season, and the run game never found the consistency needed to dominate late in games. The solution? Bring in three experienced transfers—Evan Cooke (Kent State), Adorian Favors (Tennessee-Chattanooga), and Jerrod Burrell (Akron)—who can step in and contribute right away.

On defense, Morgan State lost Elijah Williams, its top pass rusher, who led the team in tackles for loss and sacks. The Bears didn’t hesitate in finding replacements, signing Christopher King (Monmouth), Logan Martinez (Texas), and De’Marion McCoy (Lafayette). These three bring a combination of power and speed, making Morgan’s defensive line stronger and more aggressive heading into next season.

Rebuilding the Secondary with Size and Speed

The secondary took a hit with the graduation of Carlvainsky Decius, one of the team’s best cornerbacks. He was a shutdown presence, and replacing him was a must. Morgan found the answer in Hiroshi Carr (Air Force) and Kimani Stafford (College of San Mateo). Carr is 6’2” and plays with physicality, while Stafford is a smooth, athletic corner who can run with anyone.

Last season, Morgan’s defense allowed 2,050 passing yards, and teams found success attacking the secondary in key moments. With these new additions, the Bears have a chance to be much stronger against the pass in 2025.

The Right Blend of Transfers and Young Talent

The beauty of this HBCU football recruiting class is how it blends immediate impact players with long-term development pieces. The 15 transfers bring experience and leadership, while the 14 high school signees provide the future foundation of the program. This approach allows Morgan to compete now while also building for sustained success.

Some of these new faces will need to make an impact right away, including:

  • Raeden Oliver (QB, Monroe College/Rutgers) – Likely to be the starting quarterback and bring a new dimension to the offense.
  • Malachi Bryant (WR, 6’3”, 210) – A big, physical receiver who could be a go-to target in the red zone.
  • Cam’ron Jones (WR, 6’3”, 184)Deep threat who will help improve the passing game’s explosiveness.
  • Evan Cooke (OL, Kent State, 6’5”, 315)Experienced FBS lineman who should step in and protect the new QB.
  • Christopher King (DL, Monmouth, 6’2”, 290) – Expected to replace Elijah Williams as the team’s top pass rusher.
  • Hiroshi Carr (DB, Air Force, 6’2”, 190) – A physical corner who can match up with bigger receivers.

A New Chapter for Morgan State Football

This isn’t just another recruiting class—this is a class built to compete for a MEAC championship. With a quarterback battle that could change the offense, bigger and faster receivers, an improved offensive line, and a stronger defense, Morgan State is building a team that can make noise in HBCU football.

The pieces are in place. The talent is there. Now, it’s all about putting it together on the field. If these newcomers step up the way the coaching staff expects, Morgan State could be one of the most dangerous teams in the MEAC next season.

HBCU football fans, keep an eye on the Bears. Morgan State University is coming.

The return of FAMU to the Orange Blossom Classic has opened the door for another HBCU squad to get an FBS payday.

South Alabama has added Morgan State to its 2025 schedule, according to its website. It had previously been scheduled to play Florida A&M on Aug. 30, but that game was taken off the schedule as FAMU returned to the Orange Blossom Classic after not participating in the game in 2024. It is scheduled to face Howard in a rematch of the Celebration Bowl and the inaugural OBC. FAMU released its 2025 football schedule earlier this week.

Morgan State is coming off a 6-5 season in Damon Wilson’s third season as head coach of the MEAC program. It was scheduled to open the 2025 season against Villanova. That game is likely off the table for this season as Morgan State is scheduled to take on South Carolina State on Nov. 1 — the only open date on Villanova’s schedule.

Morgan State will host Towson the following week before traveling to Toledo on Sept. 13. It will then take on Georgetown on Oct. 4 before hosting non-NCAA HBCU Virginia-Lynchburg on Oct. 11.

South Alabama, a program that plays in the Sun Belt Conference, hasn’t played an HBCU since 2021. It played Alcorn State that season, winning the game 28-21. It went 7-6 during the 2024 season, including an 87-14 win over Northwestern State, a FCS program.

Elijah Williams’ journey to becoming the MEAC Defensive Player of the Year and one of the top 2025 NFL Draft prospects in HBCU football was built on hard work, faith, and leadership. During a one-on-one interview, the Morgan State star reflected on his path and what it will take to make a name for himself in the NFL.

Coming out of high school, Williams faced challenges with academics that nearly derailed his football dreams. “Coming out of high school, grades was really cheap, really bad,” Williams shared. “I had my senior year, I was doing my work, and I was able to bring my GPA to where I was college eligible. When it really showed me, I’m like, dang, school is actually this easy? I should have just been doing my work the whole time.” A late call from Morgan State, however, changed everything. “I didn’t know where I was gonna go per se,” he said. “I was probably gonna try the Juco route, prep school route. And then out of nowhere, my coach calls me and says, yeah, Morgan State’s gonna call you. They wanna give you an offer. I’m like, that’s crazy. And then Morgan State called me. I wind up committing the next week.”

As Williams arrived at the Baltimore HBCU, his relentless work ethic quickly set him apart. “I’m always going hard at practice,” he explained. “You can ask anybody. Sometimes the players will be like, ‘Yo, Eegs, you want to chill a little bit?’ I’ll be like, nah, bro, gotta go hard. Even on the Thursdays, you know? Just out there grinding.” That determination paid off in his senior year when he broke Morgan State’s sack record with 11 sacks. Reflecting on the moment, he said, “I didn’t get a sack until overtime. Then the time came, he held the ball a little longer, worked the move, went through the back. I’m like, ah man, let’s get it. And then everybody was hyped. It was real genuine happiness. My D-line guys, linebackers, everybody was happy for me.”

Williams credits his father for building his foundation of hard work and his faith for guiding him through challenges. “My father was definitely a big part of my success,” he said. “He really set the foundation. Even though he’s not the Babe Ruth or anything or the best at any sport, he understood what it took. During the summer, I had to stay 105 so I wouldn’t be a heavyweight on the D-line. We’d be down at the park grinding. Then we’d walk across the street, go to the pool, get another pool workout. He made it fun for me. And that’s how I really view grinding now. Like, it hurts, but it’s fun at the same time.” Faith also played a key role in his journey. “Keep God first in everything you do,” he emphasized. “He’s really gonna put you in the situations that you need to be in, not necessarily the places you want to be.”

Over his four years at Morgan State, Williams grew into a team leader. “The team is really leaning on me to perform every day, day in, day out,” he said. “To give a certain effort that’ll set the tone for the rest of the team. Coach Vaughn always says, ‘Elijah, you don’t gotta make every play. You gotta trust your teammates.’ I really understood how to play a specific role, and my greatness can come through the scheme.”

Reflecting on his time in the MEAC, Williams spoke about the intensity of HBCU rivalries. “I’m not gonna lie, I love playing Howard though,” he said. “Great atmosphere every time. It’s never gonna be a dull game.” He also expressed pride in Morgan State’s growth during his time there. “Morgan State invested in itself,” he shared. “Now we have new Thurgood, a new cafeteria. It’s just been a lot of growth here. And I’ve been able to grow as a person as well, not just on the football field but off the football field. It’s really taught me a lot.”

Looking ahead to the NFL Draft, Williams is focused on preparing for the next chapter. “I know I got to really lock in on my craft,” he said. “The things I did in college, that doesn’t matter here. I have to create a whole new name for myself. That can only come about through prayer and hard work.”

From an underdog to a record-breaking player, Elijah Williams’ journey at Morgan State is a testament to resilience and faith, as he prepares himself to possibly be one of the handful of players to hear their names called at the NFL Draft.

Morgan State stunned the HBCU basketball world with a thrilling 78-74 victory over Norfolk State at Hill Field House. The upset victory not only electrified the crowd of 323 fans but also reshaped the competitive outlook of the MEAC standings.

Morgan State came into the game as underdogs, holding an 8-12 record compared to Norfolk State’s 12-8. The Bears, however, showed resilience and determination from the start, taking a narrow 33-30 lead at halftime. Senior guard Kameron Hobbs was sensational, leading all scorers with 23 points, including four crucial three-pointers. His leadership kept Morgan State composed during pivotal moments of the game.

Norfolk State, a perennial HBCU powerhouse, battled back in the second half. Terrance Jones led the Spartans with 20 points, and Brian Moore Jr. added 11 points and seven rebounds. Despite their efforts, the Spartans struggled with consistency, shooting just 25.9% from beyond the arc. Missed free throws also haunted Norfolk State, converting only 52.4% from the line.

Morgan State, HBCU

Morgan State capitalized on Norfolk State’s miscues with an efficient shooting display, making 51.8% of their field goals and a staggering 80% from the free-throw line. The Bears’ ability to score in transition and maintain defensive pressure in the final minutes sealed the victory.

The upset marked a significant win for Morgan State, proving their ability to compete against top-tier HBCU programs. It also showcased the competitive depth of the MEAC, where any team can rise to the occasion on any given night. For Norfolk State, the loss was a wake-up call, highlighting areas for improvement as they aim to reclaim their dominance.

This thrilling game reinforced why HBCU basketball remains a cornerstone of collegiate athletics, blending fierce competition with unparalleled passion.

The HBCU football season is heating up with the arrival of two former NFL stars as head coaches—Michael Vick at Norfolk State and DeSean Jackson at Delaware State. Morgan State’s defensive coordinator and assistant head coach, Antone’ Sewell, is ready for the challenge, sharing his thoughts in a bold tweet:

“I’m looking forward to the competition. It’s a moot point if we don’t have good showings against these teams. I just hope they don’t assume we sweet bc we didn’t play or have long careers in the league.”

HBCU NFL Michael Vick DeSean Jackson

His tweet came in response to former FAMU AD Tiffani-Dawn Sykes sharing her thoughts on the hiring of what she called “non-traditional” hires of NFL stars Michael Vick and DeSean Jackson over “lifelong” HBCU candidates like Sewell, who has been one of the top coordinators in HBCU football and was thought to be in the running for those same head coaching roles that were filled with more “big name” candidates.

About Antone’ Sewell

Sewell joined Morgan State under head coach Damon Wilson, bringing a history of success from his time as defensive coordinator at Bowie State. While at Bowie, he helped the Bulldogs win three straight CIAA championships, including the program’s first playoff victory in 2021. That year, the defense allowed fewer than 14 points per game, ranking among the nation’s best.

His coaching résumé extends beyond Bowie State. Sewell spent time at Fort Valley State and Prairie View A&M, where he developed several standout players. His accomplishments include mentoring the 2021 AFCA Division II Defensive Player of the Year and multiple CIAA Defensive Rookies of the Year. Sewell has established himself as one of the top defensive coaches in HBCU football, known for his disciplined and aggressive defensive strategies.

Morgan State’s matchups against Norfolk State and Delaware State this season will be watched closely as the Bears take on programs led by coaches with NFL experience. The attention these games bring highlights the growing competitiveness of HBCU football.

As Morgan State builds its identity under Wilson, Sewell’s defense remains a cornerstone of their strategy, ensuring the Bears are prepared to meet the challenges of the season head-on.

His remarkable achievements extended beyond the conference, as he was named the inaugural HBCU+ National Player of the Year by Stats Perform and was a finalist for the prestigious Walter Payton Award, which honors the top offensive player at the Division I FCS level.

Williams (DL, Sr., 6-3, 270, Jersey City, N.J.) was named the 2024 MEAC Defensive Player of the Year after leading Morgan State to its best season in a decade. Williams also registered two sacks in three different games (Towson, Virginia-Lynchburg, and North Carolina Central).

A First Team All-MEAC honoree, Williams was also named a finalist for the 2024 Buck Buchanan Award, presented annually by Stats Perform to the top defensive player in Division I FCS football. Over his career at Morgan State, Williams has amassed 218 total tackles, including 128 solo stops. His career-high performance came in 2023 when he recorded 12 tackles in a double-overtime game against the University of Albany.

Delaware State University’s volleyball team is heading to the NCAA Division I Volleyball Tournament after capturing its second MEAC championship in three years. The Hornets claimed a thrilling 3-2 victory over Howard University in the conference finals at Memorial Hall in Dover, solidifying their reputation as a rising powerhouse in HBCU volleyball.

The championship match was a closely fought battle, with Howard University in five sets. Senior standout Valeria Otero led the team with 18 kills, showcasing her offensive power when the stakes were highest. Aaliyah Mitchell delivered one of her best performances of the season, adding 14 kills while hitting an impressive .600. Gerren Tomlin was another key contributor, finishing with 17 kills and 20 digs, proving her ability to impact the game both offensively and defensively.

Delaware State’s defense played a crucial role in securing the win. Morgan Allen anchored the backline with 22 digs, making several critical plays to keep rallies alive. At the net, Hannah Sanders and Martyna Kmuk combined for six blocks, effectively shutting down Howard’s hitters in the pivotal moments of the match. The Hornets’ ability to execute in pressure situations was on full display, particularly in the fifth and deciding set, where they stormed to a 15-7 win thanks to Mitchell’s clutch kills and timely blocks from the front line.

Earlier in the match, Delaware State had to dig deep in the third set after falling behind. Otero delivered two consecutive kills late in the set to shift the momentum, while Allen’s diving save on a key rally ensured the Hornets would hold on for a 25-20 win. These moments highlighted the team’s resilience and determination, qualities that have defined their season.

Delaware State’s journey to the championship was equally impressive, as the team finished the season 17-13 overall and 10-4 in MEAC play. Their tournament run included victories over North Carolina Central in the quarterfinals and a sweep of Coppin State in the semifinals, setting up their dramatic showdown with Howard. The Hornets’ triumph not only secured their MEAC title but also earned them a chance to compete against the nation’s best in the NCAA Division I Volleyball Tournament.

As they prepare to take the national stage, Delaware State carries the pride of HBCU volleyball and a roster of standout players ready to make an impact. With their championship momentum and a balanced team effort, the Hornets are poised to take on the challenge and continue their remarkable season.

Howard University (4-7, 1-3 MEAC) faces a significant challenge as they take on Morgan State University (5-6, 2-2 MEAC) in a crucial HBCU matchup. Following a brawl in its previous game, Howard will be without 17 unspecified players due to suspension, potentially impacting their depth and key positions.A source indicates that much of the starting defense will be out of the game due to suspension

Morgan State enters the game with a slight edge in defensive performance, while Howard’s offensive numbers rely heavily on their star players. With the suspensions, the Bison’s ability to execute offensively could be significantly hindered.

Howard University Key Players

  • Ja’Shawn Scroggins (QB): Leads the Bison offense with 1,166 passing yards and 8 touchdowns. If Scroggins is among the suspended players, Howard’s passing attack will take a serious hit.
  • Jarett Hunter (RB): The backbone of Howard’s ground game with 743 rushing yards and 5 touchdowns. His absence would leave the Bison scrambling to establish a run game.
  • Kenny Gallop Jr. (S): Anchors Howard’s secondary and has been instrumental in stopping big plays. A missing Gallop could expose Howard to Morgan State’s opportunistic passing game.

The impact of these suspensions will not be known until game time, but losing any of these key players would present a major challenge.

Morgan State Key Players

  • Duce Taylor (QB): Efficient and reliable, Taylor has thrown for 847 yards, 3 touchdowns, and just 1 interception. His composure will be vital in exploiting any defensive gaps caused by Howard’s depleted roster.
  • Jason Collins Jr. (RB): A powerful rusher with 520 yards and 6 touchdowns, Collins will look to control the game on the ground.
  • Andre Crawley (WR): Leads the team in receiving with 513 yards and is capable of breaking off big plays.

Morgan State’s balanced attack and strong defensive front, led by Elijah Williams with 11 sacks, position them well to capitalize on Howard’s misfortunes.

Keys to the Game

  1. Howard’s Depth Test: With 17 suspended players, Howard’s roster will be under immense pressure. Depth and substitutions will be tested at every position.
  2. Star Player Availability: If Scroggins, Hunter, or Gallop are unavailable, Howard could struggle to compete in this HBCU showdown.
  3. Morgan State’s Defense: Williams and the defensive unit must apply consistent pressure on Howard’s depleted offense to force mistakes and turnovers.

Game Prediction

This MEAC matchup holds significance for Morgan State as they aim to finish the season with a winning conference record. Meanwhile, Howard will be fighting for pride and redemption amid the fallout from last week’s brawl. Morgan State’s depth, efficient quarterback play, and defensive prowess make them favorites in this game. If Howard is missing any of their key players like Scroggins or Hunter, it could be a long day for the Bison. Morgan State is in a prime position to take advantage of the situation and close out the season on a high note.

This HBCU battle is not just about the stats—it’s about resilience, depth, and the ability to overcome adversity.

Taylor kept the passing game alive with 218 yards and a touchdown on 17-of-28 attempts. BALTIMORE, Md. (Nov. 2, 2024) — The Morgan State defense and special teams unit overcame early issues with the offense and fought back from an early three touchdown deficit to overwhelm Norfolk State 38-37 in overtime to win their first MEAC game of the season.

Coming into this game, Morgan State was looking to snap a two-game skid and put themselves into the MEAC Championship race.

The Bears got into some trouble early. Three plays into the game, MSU quarterback Duce Taylor fumbled on a run up the middle. That turnover led to a 45-yard field goal by Brandon Willcox, giving the Spartans an early 3-0 lead with 11:32 left in the quarter.

Morgan (4-5, 1-1 MEAC) then went on a 12-play drive that ended inside the red zone. That resulted in a 35-yard field goal by freshman Sahr Gbundema that tied the game at three with 5:21 left.

Norfolk State (3-7, 1-2 MEAC) then scored twice in 16 seconds. The first was on a one-yard “tush push” of Jalen Daniels into the endzone with 12:52 remaining. Then another Morgan fumble by Taylor led to a 27-yard touchdown run by Daylan Long with 12:36 remaining. Norfolk State pulled ahead 17-3.

On the next Morgan possession, Taylor fumbled again inside Norfolk territory. Two plays later, a 23-yard touchdown pass from Daniels to Jacquez Jones pushed the Spartans’ lead to 23-3. The extra point from Wilcox extended the Spartan advantage to 24-3 with 11:10 left in the first half.

Tahj Smith stepped onto the field to take over from Morgan on the next drive, injecting a sense of urgency into the Bears’ game plan. The play unfolded seamlessly as Smith engineered a 16-play, 75-yard drive that was capped by a pitch to Collins, who powered his way through the defensive line, diving into the end zone from just a yard out. Following the touchdown, Gbundema lined up for the extra point, and as the ball sailed through the uprights, the Bears found themselves with a glimmer of hope, narrowing the Spartan lead to 24-10 with just 2:35 left to play in the first half.

The Bears used a trick play with the end round from Andre Crawley to Smith for a TD with 31 seconds left. The extra point was missed by Gbundema. Morgan trailed with a score of 24-16. That would be the halftime score.

Morgan’s special teams unit stepped up huge for the Bears in the second half. The Bears started the second half when Myles Miree scored on a one-yard plunge with 1:45 left. The two-point conversion pass was no good. The Bears pushed to within 24-22.

In a thrilling turn of events during the closely contested game, Bryan Stukes came up big for Morgan as he lunged to block a crucial 34-yard field goal attempt. Jadon Carter scooped up the ball from the turf and raced 66 yards for a touchdown with 11:20 left, placing Morgan firmly in the lead with a score of 28-24.

Norfolk fought back with a 9-yard pass from Daniels to Elyja Mitchell with 7:46 left in regulation to give the Spartans the lead back. The extra point was good, making it 31-28 in favor of the Spartans.

What could’ve been a punt return for a touchdown from Malique Leatherbury with 3:38 left was waived off due to a running into the kicker penalty. A few plays later, Smith fumbled on a fourth down play with 2:15 left, which was recovered by the Spartans’ AJ Richardson.

With the stakes high and the scoreboard tightly contested, the Bears faced a crucial test after conceding a turnover. Instead of allowing the mistake to dictate the outcome, the defense rallied together, even though the Bears had to go through all three of their timeouts to help keep time on the clock.

Morgan was down to their last possession at their own 20 with 1:45 left in regulation. They drove 49 yards in 11 plays. It led to Gbundema converting a 47-yard field goal with 22 seconds left in regulation to help force overtime at Hughes Stadium.

Morgan head coach Damon Wilson’s praise for kicker Sahr Gbundema underscores the significance of seizing opportunities.

“Sahr has never kicked in college before,” Morgan head coach Damon Wilson said about Gbundema. “Our kicker went down in walkthrough practice and he showed up. He took advantage.”

“This is the point where you say when preparation meets opportunity, it equals success,” added Wilson. “That’s what he did today. He is always the first on the field to practice and the last one to leave. He’s been preparing for this opportunity and he gave us a chance to win.”

In a thrilling turn of events during the first play of overtime, Smith showcased his pinpoint accuracy and poise under pressure. He found an open Jaden Coffen streaking down the field, delivering a crisp 25-yard touchdown pass that ignited the crowd.

Then on the defense, Elijah Williams sacked Daniels in overtime, which gives him 29 in his career. This broke the Morgan record held previously by Christopher Robinson, who compiled 28.5 sacks. Despite what happened, the Spartans found the endzone when X’Zavion Evans ran it in from three yards out on a direct snap to pull within 38-37.

Morgan State Norfolk State MEAC

With the clock ticking down and the stakes higher than ever, the decision was made to risk it all and go for a two-point conversion instead of settling for a tie. The pass from Daniels into the corner of the endzone sailed over the outstretched hands of the receiver and sealed the Bears’ triumph.

Next week, the Bears take their show on the road for the last time in the MEAC regular season when they head to Dover to take on the Delaware State Hornets. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.

HBCU football is buzzing as Morgan State’s defensive standout Elijah Williams, an NFL Draft prospect, is just half a sack away from breaking the school’s all-time sack record. With 28 career sacks to date, Williams is closing in on Chris Robinson’s record of 28.5, which was set between 2011 and 2014. Over his four years with the Bears, Williams has amassed a remarkable 196 tackles and 45.5 tackles for loss, solidifying his place as a cornerstone of Morgan State’s defense, a key figure in HBCU football and an NFL prospect.

Williams’ impact on the field has been undeniable, as shown by his impressive stats each season:

  • 2021: As a freshman, Williams posted 52 total tackles and 4 sacks, laying the foundation for his record-setting journey.
  • 2022: This was a breakout year, where Williams racked up an incredible 19 tackles-for-loss (TFL) and 9 sacks, quickly making a name for himself in HBCU football.
  • 2023: Williams continued his dominance with 50 tackles, 7 sacks, and his first forced fumbles, further establishing his defensive reputation.

Morgan State head coach Damon Wilson has frequently praised Williams for both his skill and leadership, noting that his growth has been exceptional. “Elijah’s progress each year has been phenomenal,” said Wilson. “From his first season, he’s shown not just talent but an understanding of the game that’s rare. His high football IQ lets him anticipate plays, which has been a huge advantage for our defense.”

With each passing game, Williams edges closer to making Morgan State history, and his yearly improvement reflects his dedication and skill. Beyond the stats, he has grown into a respected leader for the Bears, inspiring teammates with his relentless work ethic and setting the tone for the entire defense.

As Williams stands on the cusp of breaking the sack record, he embodies the strength, pride, and perseverance that HBCU athletics are known for. His journey is not only a testament to his talent but also to the powerful legacy of Morgan State football. He’s also drawn the attention of NFL scouts, as a majority of the league’s franchises have stopped by the Baltimore HBCU to check him out.

NCCU entered MEAC play as a preseason favorite, and its early performance has justified that ranking. Quarterback Walker Harris efficiently leads a balanced offense, skillfully blending passing with a strong ground game led by running back J’Mari Taylor, who is averaging close to 100 yards per game. On defense, linebacker Jaki Brevard anchors a disciplined unit that excels in third-down stops and red-zone play.

While NCCU’s defensive front is among the strongest in the MEAC, occasional lapses in secondary coverage could be tested by high-powered passing teams. Nonetheless, NCCU’s balanced and adaptable approach makes them the team to beat in the MEAC.

South Carolina State, MEAC, HBCU

South Carolina State University (SCSU): The Primary Challenger

Key Players: Eric Phoenix (QB), Caden High (WR), Jayden Broughton (DL)

  • Strengths: Explosive Offense, Strong Run Defense
  • Weaknesses: Vulnerabilities in Pass Defense

South Carolina State has emerged as the only real challenger to NCCU’s dominance. Quarterback Eric Phoenix is among the MEAC’s top quarterbacks, leading an offense with big-play potential, particularly with deep targets like wide receiver Caden High. SCSU’s passing game is explosive, creating consistent threats to score. Jayden Broughton, a dominant force on the defensive line, reinforces a strong run-stopping defense.

However, SCSU’s secondary has shown vulnerability, sometimes allowing big gains through the air. While their aggressive defensive approach creates turnovers, it can leave them exposed to strong passing attacks. For South Carolina State to compete at the top, tightening their pass defense will be essential.

Morgan State University: Defense Delivers, Offense Struggles

Key Players: Elijah Williams (DL), Arturo Mattocks (LB), Myles Miree (RB)

  • Strengths: Dominant Defense, Effective Pass Rush
  • Weaknesses: Limited Offensive Production

Morgan State’s defense, led by standout linemen Elijah Williams and linebacker Arturo Mattocks, has delivered on its preseason expectations, consistently generating pressure, tackles for loss, and quarterback sacks. Their defense has kept them competitive, making Morgan a tough opponent to score against.

However, its offense has struggled to produce points. Running back Myles Miree leads their conservative ground game, but limited passing success leaves them predictable. Morgan State’s success this season will hinge on whether they can generate more offensive yards to support their defense.

Howard University: Defensive Bright Spots, Inconsistent Quarterback Play

Key Players: Ja’Shawn Scroggins (QB), Kenny Gallop Jr. (S), Jarett Hunter (RB)

  • Strengths: Versatile Defense, Strong Pass Coverage
  • Weaknesses: Inconsistent Quarterback Play, Offensive Efficiency

Howard came into the season with high expectations, but inconsistent quarterback play from Ja’Shawn Scroggins has hampered offensive success. Scroggins’ struggles with accuracy have stalled drives, despite solid ground support from running back Jarett Hunter. On defense, safety Kenny Gallop Jr. has been a consistent playmaker, leading a strong pass defense that generates turnovers.

While Howard’s defense is effective at limiting high-scoring opponents, the team’s success will depend on more reliable quarterback play. If Scroggins can improve his decision-making, Howard has the potential to challenge the MEAC’s top teams.

Delaware State University: Consistent but Limited

Key Players: Jaden Sutton (RB), Marqui Adams (QB), Kahleef Jimmison (LB)

  • Strengths: Steady Rushing Game, Disciplined Defense
  • Weaknesses: Limited Passing Attack, Depth on Defense

Delaware State’s performance closely aligns with preseason expectations. Running back Jaden Sutton anchors a solid rushing game, while quarterback Marqui Adams provides steady, if not high-scoring, support. Linebacker Kahleef Jimmison leads a disciplined defense, but the team’s lack of depth in the secondary leaves them vulnerable against passing-focused teams.

For Delaware State to advance in the MEAC standings, they’ll need more offensive balance and defensive depth. Their strong running game has kept them competitive, but limited passing potential may hinder them against the conference’s top teams.

Norfolk State University: The Spoilers

Key Players: AJ Richardson (LB), Daylan Long (DB), Kevon King (RB)

  • Strengths: Effective Ground Game, Turnover Generation
  • Weaknesses: Inconsistent Passing, Defensive Depth

Norfolk State has shown potential as a dark horse in the MEAC, with linebacker AJ Richardson and defensive back Daylan Long leading a turnover-generating defense. Running back Kevon King drives their offense with a solid ground game. However, their passing game lacks consistency, limiting their scoring potential, especially against well-rounded defenses.

Norfolk State could create surprises in the MEAC standings if it establish a more reliable passing game. If it continues improving, it could upset the top teams and play spoiler as the HBCU season progresses.

Week 1 Takeaways and MEAC Outlook

Top Teams and Key Differences: North Carolina Central and South Carolina State have set the standard in MEAC HBCU football. NCCU’s balanced offense and South Carolina State’s big-play passing game position them as frontrunners. Morgan State’s stout defense is keeping them competitive, though offensive limitations hold them back. Howard’s season will hinge on improved quarterback play, while Delaware State and Norfolk State show potential to surprise as underdogs.

Key Players Defining MEAC Football: Quarterbacks Walker Harris (NCCU) and Eric Phoenix (SCSU) are driving the top offenses in the MEAC, while running backs like Jaden Sutton (Delaware State) and Myles Miree (Morgan State) are crucial to their teams’ ground games. Defensive leaders like Elijah Williams (Morgan State) and Kenny Gallop Jr. (Howard) are making key plays that keep their teams in the fight.

Early-season trends suggest North Carolina Central is the team to beat, with South Carolina State’s high-powered offense close behind as the HBCU national title picture takes shape. If teams like Morgan State, Howard, and Norfolk State can address offensive challenges, the MEAC season promises close games and potential upsets. Week 1 has set the stage for a dynamic season in HBCU football, with each team shaping its path in MEAC standings.

Morgan State will face the North Carolina Central during NCCU’s Homecoming game, a pivotal clash in HBCU football this weekend. Both teams enter the contest with significant momentum, with NCCU boasting a high-powered offense and Morgan State fielding one of the stingiest defenses in the MEAC. The stakes are high as MEAC play begins, and both coaches are fully aware of what’s at hand.

For North Carolina Central (NCCU), led by head coach Trei Oliver, Homecoming week brings added motivation. Oliver emphasized the importance of focusing on execution as his team comes off a bye. “We walk into a hornet’s nest. It’s homecoming,” Oliver said. “You can take all the stats, all the games we’ve played through the last seven weeks, and throw it away. These are the five that matter.” The Eagles have their sights set on a potential Celebration Bowl appearance, and starting MEAC play strong will be crucial.

For Morgan State, head coach Damon Wilson aims to steer his team through a tough road test. Despite the challenge, Wilson remains optimistic, praising his defense and addressing special teams’ improvements during the bye week. “We know NCCU is going to capitalize on any errors, so we’ve been working on tightening up all week,” said Wilson. “This is going to be a physical football game… We have to play well in all three phases to have a chance to win the ball game.”

Key Matchup:

Morgan State’s defense will have to contain NCCU’s explosive offense, led by quarterback Walker Harris, who is supported by a solid rushing attack. Wilson knows this will be no easy feat.

“Their defense flies around, doesn’t give up a lot of big plays at all, and offensively, they’re hitting on all cylinders,” he remarked. Stopping NCCU’s rhythm and keeping its’ offense off the field will be critical for Morgan State.

Meanwhile, NCCU will focus on limiting mistakes and playing disciplined football. Oliver stressed the importance of early stops and converting opportunities in the red zone. “We’ve got to get some stops early defensively to give our offense an opportunity to try to put some points up,” Oliver said.

Keys to Victory:

  1. Morgan State:
    • Pressure Harris: Morgan State’s defense must disrupt NCCU’s passing game. Getting pressure upfront will be key to forcing mistakes.
    • Control the Clock: Wilson’s team will need to establish a strong ground game to limit NCCU’s offensive possessions.
    • Special Teams Execution: After addressing issues over the bye, Morgan State cannot afford special teams mistakes against a team like NCCU.

  2. North Carolina Central:
    • Exploit Weaknesses: The Eagles’ dynamic offense will need to capitalize on every opportunity, especially in the red zone.
    • Stop Morgan’s Ground Attack: If NCCU can contain Morgan’s rushing offense, they’ll force the Bears into uncomfortable third-and-long situations.
    • Avoid Turnovers: Turnovers could shift momentum quickly in a game like this. Playing smart, disciplined football will be key.

Both teams know this game could set the tone for the rest of the season. With MEAC play underway, each game carries significant weight, and with NCCU hosting the game during their Homecoming, the stakes are even higher. Wilson understands the challenge but remains confident in his team’s ability to rise to the occasion: “If we execute in all three phases, we’ll give ourselves a chance to win.”

Expect a classic HBCU showdown in Durham as the Eagles look to defend their home turf while Morgan State seeks to spoil NCCU’s Homecoming and start MEAC play strong.

As the HBCU football season heats up, four out of six MEAC programs are capitalizing on their bye weeks to recharge, while two teams prepare for one final non-conference test. With HBCU football powerhouse North Carolina Central University (NCCU) leading the way, the stakes are high as each game could determine the path to a conference title and a shot at postseason glory.

North Carolina Central (5-2, 1-0 MEAC)

NCCU is currently making waves in HBCU football, ranking No. 20 in the Stats Perform FCS Top-25 poll released on October 14, 2024 after a 68-0 win. This national recognition highlights their status as a top contender not just within the MEAC but across HBCU football. Head coach Trei Oliver shared how the bye week offers essential recovery time.

“The big thing is to get some rest. My players are young—they’re okay. I think my coaches probably need the rest more than the players,” Oliver said. “We’re gonna get these guys out of the building, let them spend time with their families.”

With two starting running backs nursing injuries, the rest period is crucial ahead of their October 26 homecoming showdown with Morgan State.

“The biggest thing is to reboot and come back fresh for next week… We’ve got a very tough Morgan State team coming in,” Oliver added. This matchup will be pivotal, as the Eagles aim to solidify their position as one of the best in MEAC and HBCU football.

Morgan State, MEAC, HBCU

Morgan State (2-4, 0-1 MEAC)

Morgan State enters its bye week eager to regroup following a challenging non-conference schedule. “This bye week comes right on time so we can get some guys back,” said head coach Damon Wilson. The Bears are focusing on fixing special teams issues and improving their third-down defense. Wilson is optimistic about his team’s chances against NCCU. “We’ll be ready to go for North Carolina Central’s homecoming,” he noted.

Delaware State (1-6)

After a 23-0 loss to Robert Morris, Delaware State is taking full advantage of the break.

“I gave our guys some time off… we all needed some time away from each other,” said head coach Lee Hull.

Preparing for its October 26 game against South Carolina State, Hull emphasized the need for changes.

“Sometimes doing the same thing over and over becomes monotonous… so we’re trying to put some new energy into it,” Hull explained, hoping to spark the program’s momentum in the MEAC standings.

Norfolk State (2-6, 0-1 MEAC)

Norfolk State is also using its bye to recover.

“This bye week is needed… We’ve been going hard since June 23rd,” said head coach Dawson Odums. After a narrow 28-23 loss to Towson, the team will use the break to reset before hosting Howard for homecoming on October 26.

“They probably need a break from us, and we need a break from them to get healthy,” Odums admitted.

With NCCU leading the MEAC and positioning itself as one of the top teams in HBCU football, the October 26 games will be crucial in shaping the season’s trajectory. As Oliver put it, “If you come out tiptoeing, you’ll get knocked out.”

The race to Atlanta and a potential Celebration Bowl appearance is on, with every team seeking to capitalize on their preparation and rest.

Here's why.

HBCU football fans saw Morgan State drop a 32-24 home game to Merrimack, where breakdowns in special teams and poor pass protection proved costly. Despite dominating time of possession, MSU couldn’t overcome crucial mistakes. Now 3-4 on the season, Morgan State enters a bye week before traveling to face North Carolina Central, the preseason MEAC favorite, in two weeks.

Special Teams Struggles Set the Tone

Merrimack struck first with a 99-yard kickoff return by Jermai Corbett, forcing Morgan State to play from behind for the entire game. The Warriors also controlled field position, averaging 45.1 net yards per kickoff compared to the Bears’ 11.2.

While kicker Beckett Leary converted his only field goal for Morgan State, Merrimack’s Lliam Davis made the difference by nailing four field goals, including a game-sealing 39-yarder in the final minute. The Bears’ special teams woes left them with little margin for error.

Protection Breakdown Under Pressure

Quarterback Duce Taylor completed 24 of 31 passes for 186 yards, but Morgan State’s offensive line struggled to keep him protected. Taylor was sacked four times, with two of those sacks coming during the Bears’ final drive. Merrimack’s defense maintained pressure all game, forcing hurried decisions and disrupting Morgan State’s offensive rhythm just as they gained momentum.

Missed Opportunities

Although MSU outgained Merrimack 328 to 172 and controlled possession for nearly 40 minutes, it failed to convert those advantages into points. Key drives were cut short by penalties, sacks, and missed opportunities.

J.J. Davis led the rushing attack with 71 yards and a touchdown, while Myles Miree added two more scores on the ground. However, the inability to capitalize in the red zone, combined with special teams issues, undermined Morgan State’s efforts to secure the win.

Looking Ahead

Morgan State will use the bye week to address its special teams and offensive line issues. With a critical HBCU showdown against North Carolina Central in two weeks, the Bears must make key adjustments to stay competitive in conference play. Another loss could jeopardize their postseason hopes, making it essential for Morgan State to correct course quickly.

HBCU Morgan State University continues its tradition of celebrating excellence and pride by sponsoring the Baltimore Ravens’ game against the Washington Commanders on Sunday, October 13, 2023, at 1:00 p.m. This sponsorship marks a significant milestone as Morgan State takes center stage as the official “Gameday Sponsor” for the high-profile NFL matchup. The relationship between Morgan State and the Ravens has strengthened over the years, with both institutions deeply rooted in Baltimore’s history and community.

The game day will be a memorable event for Morgan State students, alumni, and supporters, showcasing the HBCU’s culture and talent on a national platform. One of the highlights of the day will be a stirring performance by the world-renowned Morgan State University Choir, which is slated to sing the national anthem. The choir, known for its powerful vocals and inspiring performances, is expected to captivate the crowd in what promises to be a proud moment for the university.

Morgan State’s involvement in events like this reflects its commitment to building stronger community ties and elevating the presence of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) on grand stages. As the gridiron Birds of Baltimore face off against the Commanders, the MSU family will be out in full force, representing their legacy and continuing to inspire future generations through education, athletics, and the arts.

Morgan State, HBCU

In recent years, the HBCU and the Baltimore Ravens have collaborated on multiple significant events, strengthening the bond between the NFL team and the local HBCU. One notable event was Morgan State’s participation in the Ravens’ OTA (organized team activities) sessions, where MSU coaching staff, including Assistant Head Coach Antone Sewell, were invited to shadow the Ravens’ coaching team. This initiative, part of a broader effort by the Ravens to engage with HBCU coaches, allowed them to gain valuable insights and professional development, contributing to their growth in collegiate football.

Additionally, Morgan State’s world-renowned choir performed the national anthem at high-profile Ravens games, including an appearance before the AFC Championship Game, further highlighting the university’s cultural contributions on a national stage. These collaborations showcase both institutions’ commitment to enriching the local community while providing Morgan State with opportunities to elevate its presence in the sports and cultural arenas.

BALTIMORE — In the follow-up to a momentous performance in France as the first-ever HBCU band to participate in the annual D-Day memorial parade, Morgan State University’s Magnificent Marching Machine marching band will add another historic first to its already impressive list of achievements. During a special halftime presentation at Morgan’s 2024 Homecoming football game, the Magnificent Marching Machine, led by Director of Bands Jorim E. Reid Sr., D.M.A., announced before thousands of attendees and supporters that the band has been selected by the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association to perform in the 137th Rose Parade in 2026.

Each year, the Pasadena Tournament of Roses selects unique and exceptional bands worldwide to march in the Rose Parade. With Morgan’s selection to participate in this time-honored tradition, the University adds to a legacy and becomes an HBCU band member of the Pasadena Tournament of Roses family. The Association’s volunteer members select participating bands based on various criteria, including musicianship, marching ability, and entertainment or special interest value.

“The selection of Morgan’s Magnificent Marching Machine to participate in the 137th Rose Parade is a major achievement, not just for our band but for the entire Morgan community. This historic opportunity allows us to showcase the exceptional talent, energy and spirit of our students on an international stage,” said David K. Wilson, president of Morgan State University. “This is an extraordinary moment of pride for Morgan, and I do not doubt that the world will be as captivated by the Magnificent Marching Machine as we are every time they take the field.”

The Rose Parade is watched by an estimated 50 million people worldwide. It is broadcast in more than 170 countries and has an estimated live audience of 1–1.5 million. In comparison, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade draws a viewing audience of nearly 30 million. The band was selected to lead and perform in the 2019 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, another first for the University. For many marching bands, the goal is to be invited to perform in the “Triple Crown” of parade events, consisting of the Macy’s and Rose Parades and the U.S. Presidential Inaugural Parade. Few HBCU bands achieve the goal of participating in the three high-visibility, exclusive events, and hitting this trifecta has proven even more challenging for HBCUs. Morgan has been selected for two of the three, and this happens to be an election year, with the next Inaugural Parade taking place in January.

“There’s no bigger event in the marching band world than the Rose Parade. When you perform on New Year’s Day, the eyes of the world are watching,” said Dr. Reid. “It is an honor for our university to be invited, and a great opportunity for our students and marching band program to be highlighted globally. We look forward to our turn to participate in what’s known as ‘The Granddaddy of Them All.’”

HBCU band Rose Parade Morgan State University Magnificent Marching Machine Pasadena Tournament of Roses

Dr. Reid is believed to be the first and only band director to take different university bands to participate in the Rose Parade. When he last directed a band in the iconic parade, North Carolina Central University, it was only the seventh HBCU band in Tournament of Roses history to receive the honor.

For its Homecoming halftime performance, the Magnificent Marching Machine wove the Rose Parade announcement into a special performance of hit music from R&B sensation Usher. The band also executed intricate formations on the field, including using band members to form the words “Usher,” “Rose” and “Vote.” Between song renditions, a video message from Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association President Mark Leavens played to announce the selection to Homecoming attendees. The Association will release its official announcement and line-up of invited bands in March 2025.

Each year, approximately 20–25 bands are selected to perform, including a mix of high school, college, and community bands and military and international groups. Since the Tournament of Roses began including bands in its parade lineup in 1890, the tradition has grown to international fame. Over the course of its history, thousands of bands have applied, but only a fraction have been selected, making the acceptance a prestigious achievement.

Annually, only one or two college or university marching bands not associated with the football teams playing in the Rose Bowl are chosen to perform in the Rose Parade. The acceptance rate for college and university bands remains around 10–15% of those who apply.

Since its launch, the Rose Parade has been a New Year’s Day tradition. The parade extends nearly 5½ miles down Colorado Boulevard in Pasadena, California. It features four types of entries: floral-decorated floats entered by participating corporations, non-profit organizations or municipalities; equestrian units; bands; and Tournament entry vehicles carrying the parade grand marshal, the mayor of Pasadena, the Tournament of Roses president, and other VIPs.

Homecoming at HBCU Morgan State University has been marred by gun violence in recent years, and ahead of its 2024 HBCU homecoming events, Morgan State University’s Chief of Police, Lance Hatcher, has released an updated security plan designed to “ensure that this year’s events proceed safely, smoothly and without disruption.”

Four students were struck by gunfire on Oct. 3, 2023, shortly after the crowning of Mr. and Ms. Morgan State University, at an event kickoff to homecoming week at the Baltimore HBCU.

“This was such a senseless act of violence perpetrated on our community after what was a family-filled and fun evening of celebrating the pageantry and beauty of our students,” university president Dr. David Wilson said in a statement from the HBCU. “But Morgan is a strong family and we will march on with determination to keep moving on.”

Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott called the shootings, “another example in the extremely long list of campus and school shootings that have taken place across this country. We had a very difficult and tragic situation at Morgan State University. Our heart aches for the entire Morgan community, especially those directly impacted and their families.” Scott said.

Below is the comprehensive Homecoming Security Plan released by the HBCU Police Department and its Chief of Police, Lance Hatcher, courtesy of morgan.edu.

HBCU Morgan State University homecoming

Dear Morgan Community,

As we prepare for this year’s Homecoming festivities, I personally thank each of you for your dedication to Morgan and your continued commitment to upholding the values of our University. Homecoming is a time for celebration, reunion, and reflection on all we have achieved together. However, as we look forward to welcoming alumni, friends, and visitors to our campus, we must also prioritize the safety and security of our entire community.

We have developed a comprehensive Homecoming Security Plan to ensure that this year’s events proceed safely, smoothly and without disruption. As the Chief of Police for Morgan State University, I assure you that the safety of our students, faculty, staff, and visitors is our top priority.

Overview of the Homecoming Security Plan

This year, the Morgan State University Police Department (MSUPD) will deploy 225 sworn police officers and security personnel to provide a more visible security presence across the campus. We aim to ensure everyone enjoys the festivities while feeling safe and protected.

Other key elements of the security plan include:

  1. Technology-Enhanced Security:
    • Aerial drones will be deployed to provide surveillance of key areas on campus.
    • Our campus-wide security camera system has been expanded to more than 1,400 cameras, providing more than 3,100 camera views to monitor activities in real time.
    • License plate readers will help manage vehicle traffic and ensure the safety of those driving on and near campus.
    • Weapon-detection technology utilizing artificial intelligence will be implemented to detect brandished weapons on campus. This technology will help us respond rapidly to any potential threats.
    • The strategic placement of LVT Mobile Security Camera towers to aid in real-time monitoring and serve to communicate general messages will be implemented.
  2. Signage and Communication:
    • Increased signage will be posted around campus to remind attendees of the following rules:
      • Weapons are prohibited on campus.
      • Weapon-detection technology will be in use.
      • Marijuana use is strictly prohibited on campus.
      • Surveillance cameras are in use throughout the campus.
      • Entry points will be monitored to ensure a safe and smooth flow of attendees, and any prohibited items will be confiscated.
      • Clear bag protocols will also be enforced for entry into the stadium.
  3. Building and Campus Closure Times:
    • On Homecoming Day, all campus buildings will be cleared and closed by 3 p.m.
    • The campus will close at 7 p.m. on Homecoming Saturday, and MSUPD officers will begin clearing the area at 6:30 p.m. We ask that all attendees plan accordingly and exit the campus promptly to ensure a safe and orderly conclusion to the day’s events.
  4. Traffic and Parking Management:
    • MSUPD officers will manage vehicle and pedestrian traffic, parking and crowd control throughout Homecoming Week. Please follow posted signs and instructions from officers to help us maintain smooth operations.

Expectations of Attendees

Homecoming is an opportunity to showcase the very best of Morgan State University, and we are committed to providing a safe environment for all who attend. We expect all attendees to respect campus policies and the directives of MSUPD officers and security personnel. Criminal behavior, violence, or any actions that compromise the safety of our community will not be tolerated—anyone involved with or connected to criminal activity will face prosecution.

If you observe any suspicious behavior or potential threats, we urge you to report it immediately to MSUPD at 443-885-3103. Your cooperation is essential in helping us maintain a secure environment for everyone.

As we look forward to celebrating this year’s Homecoming, let’s work together to ensure a safe, enjoyable, and memorable week. By respecting the rules and each other, we can make Homecoming 2024 a positive experience for all.

Thank you for your attention to these important matters. We wish you a wonderful and safe Homecoming celebration.

Sincerely,

Lance Hatcher

Morgan State fell to Stony Brook 22-3 on Saturday, in what was a tough non-conference matchup for the HBCU football program. Despite taking an early lead, the Bears struggled to maintain momentum and couldn’t overcome the Seawolves’ dominant rushing attack. Offensive issues, particularly in finishing drives and ball security, plagued Morgan State throughout the game, contributing to their third loss of the season. Stony Brook capitalized on those mistakes, keeping Morgan State’s offense in check while building a comfortable lead.

Morgan State struck first with a 25-yard field goal by Beckett Leary, following a solid 74-yard drive in the first quarter. But from there, the offense sputtered. The Bears managed only 259 total yards, with 146 yards on the ground and 113 through the air. Turnovers were a major issue, as Morgan State fumbled twice, both at key points in drives.

Stony Brook’s running back Roland Dempster was the star of the game, rushing for 158 yards and three touchdowns on 25 carries. The Seawolves totaled 287 rushing yards, consistently breaking through Morgan State’s defense. Dempster’s 1-yard touchdown late in the second quarter extended Stony Brook’s lead to 16-3, and the Bears never recovered.

Morgan State’s defense, led by Bryan Stukes and Arturo Mattocks with 13 tackles each, tried to keep the game within reach. However, they couldn’t stop Stony Brook’s ground game in critical moments. The Bears forced a missed field goal and came up with some key stops, but their offense couldn’t capitalize. Quarterbacks Duce Taylor and Dominique Anthony combined for 113 passing yards, with no touchdowns and little success moving the ball downfield.

HBCU football Morgan State

With Morgan State sitting at 2-3 after this game, the next two games will be crucial in determining their momentum heading into conference play. They’ll need to address their offensive struggles, particularly in finishing drives and ball security, to turn things around before facing tougher HBCU opponents. These upcoming non-conference games provide Morgan State with an opportunity to fine-tune their offense and build confidence heading into the heart of the season.

For Morgan State, improving execution in the red zone and limiting turnovers will be vital as they prepare for the MEAC conference stretch. The Bears’ season could hinge on how well they adjust in the next two games to ensure their place in the HBCU football national title game in Atlanta, the Celebration Bowl.

Morgan State heads to Stony Brook for an important FCS out-of-conference clash on Saturday, aiming to get back on track after a mixed start to the season. This game is a significant test for the Bears as they look to prove themselves against a tough opponent with a strong running game. Stony Brook boasts one of the top FCS rushing attacks, while Morgan State’s defense is among the best in HBCU football as well as FCS, setting up a classic showdown between a dominant ground game and a stout defense.

Key Storyline: A Battle of Strengths

The storyline of this matchup revolves around strength versus strength. Stony Brook’s offense, led by standout running back Roland Dempster, averages 171.3 rushing yards per game, making it one of the top FCS run games. They’ve been able to control the clock effectively, keeping defenses on the field and wearing them down late in games. On the other side, Morgan State’s defense is built to stop the run. Led by Elijah Williams and a formidable front seven, the Bears’ defense is allowing just 136 rushing yards per game and has been a force at the line of scrimmage.

For Morgan State, this game is crucial. Not only does it provide a chance to secure a win against a CAA opponent, but it also allows the Bears to show that they can hang with some of the better teams in the FCS. This out-of-conference game could be pivotal for Morgan State as it looks to build momentum heading into HBCU conference play.

Keys to Victory: Protect the Quarterback and Limit Penalties

A major issue for Morgan State this season has been its offensive line play. Quarterback Tahj Smith has been sacked 11 times in just three games, putting immense pressure on the offense to find its rhythm. The offensive line will need to step up against a Stony Brook defense that can disrupt the backfield. Protecting Smith will be crucial if Morgan State hopes to move the ball consistently and keep pace with Stony Brook’s offense.

Penalties will also play a big role in this game. Both teams have struggled with discipline, and it has cost them in key moments. Stony Brook has been one of the most penalized teams, averaging 83.75 yards in penalties per game. These mistakes have often halted their drives and given opponents extra chances. Morgan State isn’t far behind, averaging 60.67 penalty yards per game. To win on Saturday, both teams must cut down on unnecessary penalties that could swing the momentum.

Stony Brook, FCS, Morgan State

Stony Brook’s Rushing Attack vs. Morgan State’s Defense

This game will likely be decided by which team can impose its will in the trenches. Stony Brook’s offensive line has been excellent in creating running lanes for Dempster, who is averaging over 100 yards per game. They will look to wear down Morgan State’s front with their power run game and control the clock, keeping Morgan State’s defense on the field.

However, Morgan State’s defense has been the backbone of the team. The Bears have shown they can stop the run and create turnovers, with playmakers like Jadon Carter leading the charge. If they can slow down Dempster and force Stony Brook to rely on its less effective passing game, it will give the Bears a significant edge.

Conclusion: A Defining Game for Morgan State

This matchup against Stony Brook is not just another game for Morgan State; it’s an opportunity to prove itself against a solid FCS program, much like the Richmond win last season. A win would bolster its confidence and show that their defense can stand up to any offense. For Stony Brook, it’s a chance to continue their climb up the rankings with a statement win. As both teams look to clean up their penalty issues and execute their game plans, the stage is set for a hard-fought battle that could shape the trajectory of their seasons.

Morgan State needs its offensive line to play its best game yet and limit mistakes to come out on top, while Stony Brook will rely on its powerful ground game to control the pace. It’s strength versus strength in a must-win scenario, and both teams know what’s at stake.

The Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA), the nation’s oldest wrestling conference, has officially added Morgan State as its newest member. With this move, Morgan State becomes the 12th member of the EIWA and the only HBCU with a Division I wrestling program.

Gene Nighman, the EIWA Executive Director, welcomed Morgan State with open arms: “We are proud to have Morgan State as part of our conference. The EIWA has a long history of advancing wrestling, and having the first HBCU program join us is a significant milestone. We look forward to seeing them compete in our 121st season and at the 2025 EIWA Championship at Lehigh University.”

For Morgan State, this is a big step forward. Dena Freeman-Patton, the school’s Director of Athletics, expressed her excitement: “Joining the EIWA is a perfect fit for our wrestling program. Our student-athletes are ready to compete at a high level and continue their success in the classroom and on the mat.”

Morgan State’s wrestling program has a rich history. After a 24-year hiatus, the program was revived in 2021 with a $2.7 million gift, the largest in school history. This donation was led by Mike Novogratz and the HBCU Wrestling Initiative, which aims to bring wrestling back to HBCUs. Morgan State, which first dominated the sport in the 1950s and ’60s, is now the only HBCU in Division I wrestling.

Kenny Monday, hired as head coach in 2022, has brought a wealth of experience to the program. A three-time NCAA All-American and Olympic gold medalist, Monday sees this EIWA membership as a turning point. “This is a monumental milestone for our program,” Monday said. “We’re excited to elevate our competition and make an impact in collegiate wrestling.”

The Bears will debut their talents at the Blue vs. Orange intrasquad dual on October 18, with their first EIWA match at Lehigh on November 15.

With this historic move, Morgan State is set to make waves in the wrestling world, continuing to build on its proud legacy as an HBCU.

The post HBCU Football: Can Morgan State find consistency vs FBS team? appeared first on HBCU Gameday.

]]>
Morgan State football has been unpredictable this season. At times, the Bears’ offense looks strong, but at other moments, it struggles. As they prepare to play an FBS team in Ohio this Saturday, the big question is: can they get offensive consistency before they get into the HBCU part of the season?

In their first game against Hampton, Morgan State’s offense was solid. They ran for 244 yards and scored four touchdowns. But in their next game against Towson, they could only score nine points and struggled to move the ball. The offense had just 249 total yards and allowed five sacks.

The Good and Bad of Morgan State’s Offense

Morgan State has shown two sides of its offense. Against fellow HBCU, Hampton, they ran the ball well and controlled the clock, keeping the other team off the field. However, in the Towson game, their offensive line couldn’t protect quarterback Tahj Smith. The team had trouble running the ball, and outside of one 74-yard touchdown pass, the offense was quiet.

HBCU Morgan State FBS

What Morgan State Needs to Do to Beat FBS Ohio

Ohio is coming off a 27-20 win over South Alabama and has a balanced team. To beat Ohio, Morgan State needs to bring their best game. Here are the key things they must do:

  1. Run the Ball Early: Ohio allows 120 rushing yards per game, giving Morgan State a chance to use their running backs to control the game. Myles Miree, Keith Jenkins Jr., and Jason Collins should run the ball often, just like they did against Hampton.
  2. Protect the Quarterback: Tahj Smith can make plays with his arm and legs, but only if he has time. The offensive line must do a better job protecting him than they did against Towson. Ohio’s defense will be looking to pressure Smith, so the line needs to step up.
  3. Avoid Penalties and Mistakes: Mistakes have hurt Morgan State in both games. Penalties stalled their drives against Towson, and they can’t afford that against Ohio. If Morgan plays a clean game, they have a better chance of winning.
  4. Convert on Third Downs: Morgan State struggled on third downs, converting only 4 of 12 against Towson. They need to improve this if they want to keep their drives going and wear down Ohio’s defense.

Can Morgan State Be Consistent?

Morgan State has the talent to be successful vs an FBS team, but they need to be more consistent. Their offense has shown it can be powerful, but it has also disappeared in key moments. If they can play with the same balance they showed against Hampton, they have a chance to upset Ohio.

This game will show whether Morgan State is ready to compete at a higher level or if their offense will continue to struggle. HBCU fans will be watching closely to see if the Bears can find consistency and put together a strong performance against Ohio.

Baltimore’s HBCU Morgan State University faced another tough defeat in the Battle for Greater Baltimore, falling 14-9 to Baltimore PWI Towson University, in front of a crowd of 8,394 at Towsend’s Johnny Unitas Stadium. Morgan fought hard but couldn’t break its losing streak, marking the seventh consecutive loss to its city rival.

The game started with promise for Morgan State (1-1) as Carlvainsky Decius intercepted Towson quarterback Carlos Davis’s first pass. This set up a 40-yard field goal by Beckett Leary, giving the Bears an early 3-0 lead. However, Towson quickly responded with a touchdown pass from Davis to Sam Reynolds, putting the Tigers ahead 7-3 at the end of the first quarter.

Towson added to their lead with a 6-yard touchdown run by Christopher Watkins before halftime, sending Morgan State into the breakdown 14-3. In the third quarter, Morgan State struck back when quarterback Tahj Smith connected with Joseph Kennerly Jr. for a 74-yard touchdown, narrowing the gap to 14-9. Unfortunately, a blocked extra point attempt prevented the Bears from closing the margin further.

Morgan State’s defense stepped up in the second half, shutting down Towson’s offense. Linebacker Arturo Mattocks led the way with nine tackles, while defensive lineman Elijah Williams contributed two sacks. Despite their defensive success, the Bears’ offense couldn’t capitalize, with Smith completing 13 of 20 passes for 163 yards but suffering five sacks.

As the clock wound down, Morgan had one last chance to mount a comeback, but a critical sack by Towson’s Will Middleton sealed the game. Towson University held on to secure the win, extending their dominance over Morgan State in this rivalry.

For the HBCU community, a win would have been a significant achievement, giving Morgan State the chance to reclaim local bragging rights. As the Bears prepare for conference play, they’ll look to build on their defensive efforts and find more offensive consistency.

Final Score: Towson 14, Morgan State 9.

Morgan State University football, a proud HBCU program, has kicked off the season with a statement win over Hampton University on Aug. 31. The narrow two-point victory not only boosts team morale but also sets a positive tone for the rest of the season.

Morgan State head coach Damon Wilson knows the significance of this win. “It was a big win for us, especially against a tough Hampton team,” Wilson said. “Our guys showed a lot of grit and determination out there.”

Morgan State’s ground game was a major factor in the win, amassing over 240 rushing yards. Wilson emphasized the strength of his offensive line, a mix of young talent and experienced players.

“Our guys up front really battled,” Wilson noted. “They opened up some holes, and our running backs took advantage. That’s the kind of football we want to play—tough, physical, and effective.”

Despite the win, Wilson is keeping his team focused on continuous improvement. The team attempted just eight passes in the win. With a young quarterback like Taj Smith leading the offense, there are always areas to refine. Wilson acknowledged the growth he’s seen in Smith but is clear about the work still needed.

“Taj made some big plays when we needed them, but we have to keep getting better,” Wilson said. “The moment is never too big for him, which is a good sign for our future.”

Morgan State,

Preparing for Towson: The Battle of Baltimore

Morgan State now turns its attention to a high-stakes matchup against cross-town rival Towson University. Known as the “Battle of Baltimore,” this game is more than just a regular-season fixture; it’s about local pride and dominance. Wilson understands the challenge ahead.

“Towson is a solid team, well-coached, and they’re coming off a game where they moved the ball well against a big-time opponent,” Wilson explained. “We’ve got to be ready in all phases.”

This rivalry game presents an opportunity for Morgan State to showcase its progress and resilience. It also presents a challenge Towson has won the last six contests against Morgan State, including a ten-point win in 2023. MSU’s last win in the series was in 2009.

“We’re not the same team we were last year,” Wilson stated. “We’ve learned from our past, and we’re focused on playing our brand of football. It’s about being 1-0 each week, focusing on what we can control.”

Looking Ahead: Building a Strong Program

Wilson is committed to building a program that embodies the spirit and tenacity of HBCU football. He’s not just focused on the immediate game but on creating a legacy of consistent improvement and success. “Every game is a chance to get better,” Wilson said. “We want to represent Morgan State football with pride, discipline, and a relentless work ethic. That’s how we’re going to make our mark.”

As Morgan State prepares for its next challenge, Wilson’s focus remains clear: stay disciplined, play smart, and compete with heart. The Bears have started their journey with a win, but the season is long, and each game brings its own test. With Wilson at the helm, Morgan State is ready to tackle whatever comes its way, all while shining a spotlight on the strength and tradition of HBCU football.

“We’re here to compete, to show what Morgan State football is all about,” Wilson concluded. “It’s not just about winning games; it’s about doing things the right way and making our community proud.”

The post HBCU Band Battle: Morgan State vs Hampton University appeared first on HBCU Gameday.

]]>
Let me set the stage: I’m no band enthusiast, and I’m definitely not qualified to judge a battle of the bands. I’ve been around HBCU band culture long enough to know a good show when I see one, but my focus has always been more on the field than the halftime performance. When I started working for HBCU Gameday, I wasn’t exactly impressed with Morgan State’s band, the Magnificent Marching Machine. To be honest, I thought they had one of the worst bands in the HBCU scene. But I have to give credit where it’s due—over the years, they’ve been on a steady path of improvement, and this was evident during halftime the against Hampton University Marching Force.

Fast forward to this past weekend when I was at the Morgan State vs. Hampton football game. Hampton University’s band, known as The Marching Force, made its entrance into the stadium first, marching in with that unmistakable Hampton regality that can make an alum’s heart swell with pride. They had the precision and traditional flair that you expect from Hampton.

Then came the surprise. As I was shooting the game, suddenly, the sound of horns blasted through the air. I turned around to see the Magnificent Marching Machine making its entrance, and it was a whole different vibe. They marched in with a swagger and a sound that you’d expect to hear below the Mason-Dixon line, not in Baltimore. Their presence was loud and in-your-face, and for a moment, it felt like they were stealing the show right out from under The Marching Force.

The Marching Force seemed caught off guard, almost like they weren’t sure how to react. They just stood there, looking at Morgan’s band like, “What just happened?” It reminded me of those intense band showdowns between North Carolina A&T and South Carolina State, where the competition level is through the roof. But this time, The Marching Force didn’t seem to have a response ready, and the Magnificent Marching Machine took full advantage, carrying that energy right into the halftime show.

HBCU band Morgan State Hampton University

If we’re talking purely about sound quality, The Marching Force might have had the upper hand. Their performance was polished and refined, living up to the high expectations of Hampton’s band legacy. But the Magnificent Marching Machine brought something different to the table—raw energy and a swagger that was impossible to ignore. They’ve come a long way since I first started covering them, and their performance showed that it’s not just about playing the notes perfectly; it’s about bringing the kind of energy that makes you turn your head and take notice. This battle of the bands was more than just a musical contest; it was a statement that the Magnificent Marching Machine is no longer content to sit quietly in the background.

In a surprise to most followers of HBCU football, Morgan State leaned on its offense to secure a thrilling 30-28 victory over Hampton in an old-school HBCU rivalry that dates back to 1922. Morgan State HC Damon Wilson’s teams are typically known for their defensive prowess, but the Bears’ offensive performance took center stage in the win over Hampton, catching both fans and analysts off guard.

Morgan State’s running game was particularly dominant, amassing 244 yards on the ground. Myles Miree was a standout, scoring two touchdowns and consistently moving the chains. Jason Collins also made a significant impact with a 41-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, showcasing the Bears’ big-play capability. Quarterback Tahj Smith had a modest showing with 75 passing yards, yet he managed to lead key drives, including a 37-yard pass to Marquez Phillip that set up a crucial fourth-quarter touchdown by J.J. Davis.

Hampton demonstrated resilience, keeping the game close throughout. Quarterback Malcolm Mays led the Pirates with a balanced offensive attack, throwing for 216 yards and two touchdowns. His connection with Kevin Johnson Jr. for a 29-yard touchdown late in the fourth quarter brought Hampton within striking distance, proving the Pirates could score under pressure.

Hampton’s ground game complemented its aerial assault, with contributions from Mays and running back Elijah Burris. The Pirates accumulated 123 rushing yards, which helped sustain drives and keep Morgan State’s defense on its toes. Despite this, Hampton’s defense struggled to contain Morgan State’s rushing attack, allowing several big plays that shifted the game’s momentum.

Penalties were a factor for both teams, disrupting the flow and contributing to the game’s seesaw nature. Morgan State was penalized nine times for 89 yards, often putting its offense in difficult positions or extending Hampton’s drives. Hampton committed eight penalties for 85 yards, which stalled key possessions and eliminated scoring opportunities. These miscues turned the game into a test of resilience as much as skill.

Defensively, Morgan State showed flashes of brilliance but struggled to maintain consistency. Elijah Williams and Eric Hunter, typically defensive stalwarts, found it challenging to contain Hampton’s diverse offense. Still, Jadon Carter’s interception in the second quarter was a pivotal moment, allowing Morgan State to build momentum.

Hampton’s defense had its share of highlights, recording four sacks on Tahj Smith and creating several third-and-long situations. Linebacker Xavier Marshall led the Pirates with ten tackles, demonstrating Hampton’s defensive potential. However, the inability to halt Morgan State’s rushing game in crucial moments ultimately tipped the scales.

In the end, Morgan State’s control of the clock and ability to execute key plays on offense secured its victory, kicking off the season on a high note. Both teams showcased offensive strength, promising an exciting season ahead, but highlighted areas for defensive improvement. As Morgan State looks to build on this offensive momentum, Hampton will aim to tighten its defense and minimize penalties to enhance its competitiveness in HBCU football.

Hampton University and Morgan State University are set to kick off their 2024 football season this Saturday at Armstrong Stadium, renewing a historic HBCU football rivalry dating back to 1922. This game marks their 66th meeting, and both HBCU teams have plenty to prove.

New Leadership at Hampton

Hampton University is starting the season under interim head coach Trent Boykin, who brings nearly 30 years of coaching experience to the table. Boykin, previously Hampton’s running backs and special teams coach, now steps up to lead the Pirates with a focus on stability and winning.

Hampton’s offense will rely heavily on key players like running back Elijah Burris, who averaged 114.7 yards per game last season, and quarterback Chris Zellous, a dual-threat talent with over 2,000 total yards and 22 touchdowns. These players will be crucial if Hampton wants to improve on its 12th-place preseason ranking in the CAA and make a statement in HBCU football.

Morgan State Banking on Smith

Morgan State University, coming off a 4-6 season, is looking to sophomore quarterback Tahj Smith to ignite its offense. Smith, who took over as the starter in the final four games last year, brings a dual-threat capability, having thrown for 426 yards and three touchdowns while adding 159 yards and two scores on the ground. Morgan State head coach Damon Wilson has named Smith the starting quarterback, banking on his versatility to boost an offense that struggled in 2023.

Smith’s ability to connect with his receivers and execute new offensive coordinator Apollo Wright’s game plan will be critical for Morgan State. Improving on last season’s average of 16.1 points per game will be essential for the Bears to compete in MEAC and make a mark in HBCU football.

What to Watch

Hampton University has shown a knack for winning close games, finishing 4-1 in contests decided by seven points or fewer last season. Morgan State University, with a 4-4 record in similar situations, will need to find more consistency. Turnovers could play a major role in this game; Morgan State’s -12 turnover ratio from last season is a vulnerability that Hampton might exploit.

Morgan State’s defense, regarded as one of the best in the MEAC, will be pivotal. Led by standouts Eric Hunter and Elijah Williams, this unit will aim to disrupt Hampton’s offensive rhythm and give Tahj Smith more opportunities to drive the Bears’ offense.

The Stakes

Hampton University is picked 12th in the CAA preseason rankings, and a strong start is essential to exceed expectations. Historically, Hampton has had success against rivals like Howard, Grambling, and North Carolina A&T. A win against Morgan State University would set a positive tone for Hampton and bolster its position in HBCU football.

Bottom Line

This game is about more than just kicking off the season; it’s about setting a tone for the rest of the year. Both Hampton and Morgan State have new dynamics and are eager to prove themselves. With a long-standing rivalry and significant history in HBCU football, Hampton vs. Morgan State is set to be a hard-fought contest that will reveal where these two teams stand early in the 2024 season. The game will air on FloSports.

BALTIMORE, Md. – Morgan State University is deeply saddened by the loss of George Rhoden, an HBCU Olympian and former track and field legend who passed away on August 24, 2024, at the age of 97. Rhoden, a native of Jamaica, attended Morgan State (1950-52) where he excelled in track and field. He was hailed by many as the best quarter-miler to have ever represented Jamaica.

In 1952, Rhoden represented Jamaica at the Olympic Games in Helsinki, Finland, where he won a gold medal in the 400-meter race and was a member of the Golden Quartet that won the 4x400m. a silver medal in the 800-meter race. He became the first Jamaican to win an Olympic gold medal in track and field and was hailed as a national hero.

Born on December 13, 1926, in Kingston, Jamaica, Rhoden’s journey to Olympic greatness began in the late 1940s, when he emerged as one of the leading long sprinters of his era. Alongside his compatriots Arthur Wint and Herb McKenley, Rhoden helped establish Jamaica as a dominant force in athletics during the post-war period.

Rhoden first competed in the 1948 London Olympics, where he participated in the 100m and 400m events. Although he did not secure a medal in London, it was a precursor to the greatness that would follow. Rhoden and his teammates were expected to perform strongly in the 4x400m relay, but a muscle injury to Wint during the final dashed their hopes of a medal.

Rhoden continued to emerge in the world of track & field. On August 22, 1950, he shattered the world record in the 400m, setting an astonishing time of 45.8 seconds in Eskilstuna, Sweden. His dominance in the 400m was further cemented by his victories in the AAU championships from 1949 to 1951 and the NCAA championships while at HBCU Morgan State University, where he claimed titles in the 220-yard (200m) and 440-yard (400m) events.

At the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki, Rhoden’s athletic prowess soared to new heights. As a pre-race favorite in the 400m, Rhoden’s every stride was fueled by anticipation. In a race that kept spectators on the edge of their seats, Rhoden emerged victorious, narrowly edging out his close friend and fellow Jamaican, Herb McKenley, to claim the gold medal. But Rhoden’s Olympic glory did not end there. As the anchor leg of Jamaica’s 4x400m relay team, he led his team to victory, securing a second gold medal and setting a new world record of 3:03.9. This victory was especially sweet, as it came against the United States, the country where Rhoden had made his home after moving to San Francisco.

Rhoden’s legacy is one of perseverance, excellence, and national pride. His achievements paved the way for future generations of HBCU and Jamaican athletes, setting a standard of excellence that continues to inspire.

As the last surviving member of that legendary 1952 relay team–comprising George Rhoden, Herb McKenley, Arthur Wint, and Les Laing–his passing marks the end of an era for Jamaican athletics. Rhoden’s contributions to the sport, both on and off the track, will be remembered as a cornerstone of Jamaica’s rich sporting heritage.

George Rhoden is survived by his family, friends, and a grateful nation that will forever honor his contributions to Jamaica’s sporting legacy.

In addition to his athletic achievements, Rhoden was a dedicated HBCU educator and mentor. He taught physical education and coached track and field at Howard University and the University of the District of Columbia. He also served as the president of the Jamaican Amateur Athletic Association and was a member of the International Olympic Committee.

Rhoden’s legacy will continue to inspire generations of student-athletes and track and field enthusiasts. He will be remembered as a true pioneer and a champion who represented Morgan State University with pride and distinction.

BALTIMORE, Md. – As the Morgan State Bears gear up for the 2024 HBCU football season, one name is making waves in the quarterback room: sophomore Tahj Smith. The 6-foot-2, 190-pound quarterback from Fredericksburg, Virginia, has emerged as the frontrunner to lead Morgan State’s offense and is poised to take the reins heading into the fall.

After appearing in five games last season and starting the final four, Smith is no stranger to the pressures of leading an offense. During his freshman campaign, he completed 29-of-71 passes for 426 yards and three touchdowns. What’s more, he was the third-leading rusher for the Baltimore, Maryland-based HBCU, adding 159 yards on the ground with an average of 4.1 yards per carry and two rushing touchdowns. His dual-threat ability gives the Bears a versatile weapon under center.

Smith’s emergence as the starting quarterback, however, is still part of an ongoing competition. He’s facing pressure from a talented group that includes former starters Dominique Anthony and Duce Taylor. But, according to Morgan State head coach Damon Wilson, Smith is the clear leader going into Week 1.

“Tahj is the starting quarterback with us going into week one,” Coach Wilson told Morgan State Athletic Communications. “But Dominique [Anthony], Kobe [Muasau], and Duce [Taylor] have continued to push. They’ve had good days, but we have to have a starting point.”

As Smith settles into his role as QB1, the focus shifts to how well he can sync with his receivers and execute new offensive coordinator Apollo Wright’s game plan.

“The chemistry between the quarterbacks and receivers is getting better,” said Coach Wilson. “We’re not there yet, but the good thing is we still have a few weeks before game time.”

Smith echoed the importance of building that rapport with his receivers, noting that his trust in the wideout corps is growing by the day.

“Our receivers have been playing great, honestly,” Smith said. “We have guys everywhere, inside and outside. I don’t really have a favorite target. I think everybody can go. We have a deep rotation this year, and it’s going to be special to watch.”

With Smith’s poise in the pocket and a deep receiving group, the potential is there for Morgan State to elevate its offensive performance from last season’s 4-6 finish. Coach Wright’s offensive scheme is designed to play to the strengths of the roster, and Smith has already bought in.

“Working with Coach Wright has been really good,” said Smith. “He’s putting us in the right position to make plays, and he’s working the personnel to a point where we can execute at a higher level.”

One of the biggest assets to Smith’s development has been Morgan State’s defense, a unit widely regarded as one of the best in the MEAC and HBCU football. Led by standouts Eric Hunter and Elijah Williams, the defense pushes Smith every day in practice, sharpening his skills and preparing him for game-day situations.

“It’s really fun. They get you prepared for anything,” Smith said. “I think this is the best defense I’ve played in college. Going against them every day has helped me a lot.”

Coach Wilson agreed, emphasizing how important it is for Taj Smith to get those competitive reps in against such a talented group.

“We’ve continued to get better and do the little things right,” said Wilson. “However, we still have to be more consistent. We haven’t had three good practices in a row yet, but we’re getting there.”

With Smith under center and a defense that’s as formidable as any in the conference, the Bears are setting their sights on the MEAC title. But it won’t be easy, and the team knows it still has work to do to reach its potential.

For Tahj Smith, the focus remains on refining his game and building trust with his teammates. If he can continue his upward trajectory, Morgan State may have found the quarterback it needs to take the next step in the MEAC.

Smith’s final words reflect the mindset of a player ready to lead: “I’m staying focused on standing poised in the pocket, trusting what I see, and trusting in the looks the defense gives.”

As the 2024 HBCU football season approaches, all eyes will be on Tahj Smith to see if he can lead Morgan State to new heights.

Morgan State is making headlines this season, demonstrating they’re more than just an HBCU team in transition–they’re a program on the rise. Under the leadership of head coach Damon Wilson, the Bears are laying the groundwork for sustained success and showcasing their readiness to compete at a higher level.

Morgan State Damon Wilson
Morgan State head coach Damon Wilson walks out onto the field.

Recent performances have provided critical reference points for Morgan State. Key victories, such as the one over Richmond, and close contests against FBS opponents are shaping the team’s strategy and confidence.

“The foundation is made. The guys understand the expectation,” Wilson states. “Now it’s our responsibility to execute and build on what we’ve learned.” These experiences have been instrumental in guiding the Bears towards greater achievements.

A major part of Morgan State’s transformation is its focus on building a winning culture. Wilson emphasizes that success begins in the classroom, pointing out the team’s GPA improvement from 2.58 to 3.0.

“It always starts in the classroom,” he explains. “When you get things right there, it translates to the football field.”

This commitment to developing both academics and athletics is cultivating a winning mindset that is beginning to show on the field.

Offensively, Morgan State is undergoing significant changes to align its roster with strategic goals. Wilson is optimistic about these adjustments, highlighting the addition of a new Offensive Coordinator Apollo Wright. Wright, who has FBS experience was brought in to help score points while maintaining strong defense and special teams. The quarterback position is central to this offensive shift. Taj Smith, who ended last season as the starter, is expected to lead the offense.

“Taj Smith’s going to be our starting quarterback,” Wilson confirms. “He’s a competitor who stays level-headed, whether he’s throwing or running the ball.” Smith’s competitive nature and experience are crucial as he steers Morgan State towards their goals.

The Bears’ defensive lineup includes key players such as senior defensive lineman Elijah Williams, senior linebacker Erick Hunter, and senior defensive back Carlvainsky Decius. They form a formidable front alongside Nana Asante, while Ja’son Prevard provides depth and skill in the secondary.

As the season kicks off, Morgan State faces a challenging opener against fell HBCU Hampton. This matchup will test the team’s readiness and resilience.

“It’s going to be a hostile environment,” Wilson acknowledges. “But we’re excited for the challenge and the opportunity to start the season strong.”

Morgan State is not just stepping up–they’re turning the corner. With a solid foundation, a focus on building a winning culture, and a revamped offense led by a determined quarterback, the Bears are poised for a successful season. The progress is evident, and the future looks bright for this HBCU team on the rise.

BALTIMORE, Md.–Morgan State’s legacy in The Basketball Tournament (TBT) continues this summer, with former HBCU basketball star Stanley Davis Jr. joining the Million Dollaz Worth of Game team. This squad, led by Coach Tony Paris and featuring popular podcast hosts Gillie Da King and Wallo, will represent Philadelphia in TBT for the first time.

Million Dollaz Worth of Game, formerly known as Broad Street Birds (Temple Alumni), aims to honor the rich basketball history of the city and its legendary players. The team’s name pays tribute to the iconic podcast hosted by Gillie and Wallo, which has garnered immense popularity. The squad’s ultimate goal is to capture the coveted one million dollar prize awarded to the TBT champion.

Last summer, Davis (aka. Bazz) showcased his skills on the court as a member of HBCUnited, a team of players from historically black colleges and universities (HBCU) that was coached by Norfolk State head coach Robert Jones.

TBT is thrilled to announce its return in 2024. Following a remarkable 10th Anniversary event in 2023, TBT aims to elevate the tournament even further. The 2024 edition will feature intense competition across eight regions, culminating in a thrilling semifinal and championship showdown at a yet-to-be-determined location.

“God, who has given me the talent and ability to play this game and the life to continue to grow in it,” said Davis. “I played in the TBT last year for the first time under HBCU United. It didn’t end well, but it was an experience.”

“I am now with Team Million Dollaz Worth of Game. This elite group of professional athletes, hailing from the Philadelphia/Jersey area, provides a controlled pro-run atmosphere under the guidance of Coach Tone (Tony Tee).”

“Coach Tone has recognized my potential not only as a valuable asset to this TBT team but also in my career,” added Davis. “His mentorship has been instrumental in shaping my aspirations, fueling my belief that I can achieve the pinnacle of basketball, whether it be on the international stage or in the NBA. I am grateful for his unwavering support and guidance.”

Davis has experienced success as an overseas professional and most recently completed his first season with Al Jalaa Aleppo in the Syrian Basketball League.

Davis looks forward to adding to his basketball journey.

“I love to play against the best talent across the nation and beyond and the TBT and Team Million Dollaz Worth of Game is giving me that opportunity to show that I’m really a true diamond in the rough coming from Chester, Pennsylvania.”

The 25-year-old played all four years for the Bears and finished his HBCU career ranked No. 24 on the school’s all-time scoring leaderboard with 1,044 points and ranks 15th on the all-time rebounding list. He’s just the 13th player in school history to have over 1,000 points and over 500 rebounds.

In his final season, he was a 2020 All-MEAC Third Team selection and ranked among the league leaders in a number of statistical categories: No. 8 in rebounding (6.0), No. 9 in scoring (13.7), No. 12 in assists (2.5), No. 6 in free throw percentage (.784) and No. 13 in field goal percentage (.465).

Davis has played professionally on three different continents (Europe, Asia, and of course North America) in five different countries since completing his college career. Davis has played previously professionally in Georgia (Kutaisi), Lebanon (Liders), the United Kingdom (Scorchers), and Albania (Vllaznia).

TBT is a 64-team, single-elimination tournament with a $1 million payout to the winning team. NBA players aren’t eligible, but pros from other leagues across the world as well as former college greats are and battle it out annually.

Davis joins a Million Dollaz Worth of Game roster that includes: Anthony Lee (Temple), Austin Tilghman (Monmouth), Eli Cain (Salt Lake City), Erik Copes (George Mason), Jerrell Wright (La Salle), Josh Blamon (Richard Stockton), Koby Thomas (Robert Morris), Marquis Collins (Missouri-St. Louis), Myles Stephens (Princeton), Nate Pierre-Louis (Temple), Seth Pinkney (Florida International), Tim Guers (St. Anselm College) and will be coached by head coach Tony Paris.
