NORFOLK, Va. — HBCU basketball is facing a new reality with the rise of the transfer portal and NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) deals. Recruiting has become more competitive, and retaining top talent is harder than ever. North Carolina Central head coach LeVelle Moton has been vocal about these challenges.

Speaking after North Carolina Central’s thrilling last-second upset win over Delaware State in the MEAC Tournament, Moton didn’t hold back. “In this portal era, in this NIL era, things have changed. What required you to be a good coach five years ago? That ain’t the climate now,” he said.

The Impact of NIL and the Transfer Portal on HBCU Basketball

Before the transfer portal, college basketball players had to sit out a year if they switched schools. Now, they can play immediately, which has led to a major shift in recruiting. At the same time, NIL allows athletes to earn money, and bigger programs with larger financial resources can offer more lucrative deals.

“Whoever got the most money just buys a team, assembles a team. You got 14 new guys learning each other,” Moton said. This new era has made it tough for HBCUs to keep their best players from being recruited by Power Four schools with bigger NIL opportunities.

HBCU Basketball Stars Moving Up

Many standout HBCU players have transferred to larger programs in search of better NIL deals and more exposure. Some recent examples include:

  • Steve Settles III (Howard to Temple)
  • Elijah Hawkins (Howard to Minnesota to Texas Tech)
  • Jamari Thomas (Norfolk State to South Carolina)
  • Duncan Powell (NCCU to Georgia Tech)
  • Blake Harper? (Howard) – A rising freshman star already drawing interest from Power Four programs.

For HBCU basketball, this means programs must constantly rebuild their rosters, as top players often leave before fully developing. “Five years ago, we could develop a guy for three or four years,” an HBCU coach told HBCU Gameday. “Now, he might be gone after one season.”

The Looming House v. NCAA Settlement and What It Means for HBCUs

The House v. NCAA settlement could change recruiting even more by forcing schools to directly pay players. This raises big questions for HBCU basketball:

  • Will HBCUs have the budget to compete with larger schools?
  • Will Power Four programs continue to dominate recruiting by offering salaries?
  • Can HBCUs find new ways to leverage NIL to attract top talent?

The Future of HBCU Basketball in the NIL Era

To stay competitive, HBCU basketball programs must adapt to this evolving landscape. Coaches are no longer just developing players—they are rebuilding their teams every season and navigating the NIL market.

“We can sit here and complain, or we can adjust,” Moton said. “The game is different now. The best coaches aren’t just coaching—they’re adapting.”

Thursday night’s hero for North Carolina Central was Isaac Parson, a graduate transfer from DII HBCU Winston-Salem State.

Even for Moton, the transfer portal giveth, and the transfer portal taketh away.

With players like Blake Harper gaining national attention, the focus is on whether HBCUs can hold onto their stars or if Power Four programs will continue to pull them away. One thing is clear: NIL and the transfer portal have forever changed HBCU basketball.

NORFOLK, VA — It’s not every day an HBCU player makes Sportscenter for a last-second shot in March Madness, but you wouldn’t know it from watching Issac Parson in the press conference.

The 6’1 point guard drove the length of the court in seven seconds and came up with a layup that dropped into the rim as time expired to give North Carolina Central an epic 79-77 win over Delaware State in the quarterfinals of the MEAC Tournament.

“I looked up at the clock, it was like 2.5 (seconds left), Coach Moton said ‘go score, go score,” Parson said with a slight grin. “So then, shoot I just know I had to get it up, turn the corner, and go score. I was just looking, waiting to see if it was gonna drop.”

It did — after four bounces. Also dropping to the floor was his coach. LeVelle Moton, looking for his fifth MEAC title in just over a decade, leaned back and hit the floor in the second that seemed like a minute that the ball bounced on the rim of the Scope.

“I trusted this young man over here on my left, to put the ball in his hands. That’s what he do. And the rest is history.”

Issac Parson, HBCU Gameday, Sportscenter
Issac Parson didn’t make Sportscenter at WSSU, but he hit plenty of big shots.

Issac Parson was playing in his first MEAC Tournament game after he spent three seasons playing for Cleo Hill at WSSU, helping the team go 59-25 during that span, including a CIAA title in 2023.

Parson is from Kinston, North Carolina — the hometown of Jerry Stackhouse, among many other NBA players. Moton and Stackhouse have been tight since they were pre-teens. Moton said he’s known about Parson for a while, even though he signed with NCCU’s one-time conference rival.

“His family and Stack are really cool, so we always known about him,” Moton said. “We followed him at Winston. And now with this portal — it was just kind of a match made in heaven.”

Issac Parson was a decorated player in the Division II HBCU league, winning all-rookie honors as well as an all-CIAA nod last season. He has started just two games this season after starting 66 of his 77 games at WSSU. But he’s usually on the floor when the game ends, and if NCCU is to win the title, he’ll likely be a key part.

“He’s played there for four years, so now he had to adjust to how we do things here. And it’s been a difficult transition for him as it would with anymore. But he’s continued to buy in. Sometimes he’s got frustrated, but, hopefully he can feel confident now. Because he is the one guy on our team with a championship pedigree. And so that’s why he makes significant plays.

Moton said the free throws Parson hit down the stretch were just as significant. He went 4-for-4 from the free thrown line before hitting the game-winner. Free throws might win ball-games, but they don’t make Sportscenter.

“Those things get lost in the end of the battle because everybody loves the sexy stuff, like a last-second shot,” Moton said.

Last second shots are kind of Parson’s thing, though. He showed the willingness to take and make a last-second shot from his first season on when he hit two buzzer beaters against Virginia State and Elizabeth City State. And he continued to do so during his last two seasons there. And he did it twice during the regular season in wins against Garner-Webb and — you guessed it — Delaware State. But none of those were as big as the one he hit on Thursday night — the one that was slotted no. 5 on Sportscenter.

The name of the game is “survive and advance.” NCCU will have to win three games in three days to bring the first MEAC title back to Durham since 2019. Issac Parson has the experience as part of a team that won four games in four days to do it at his last HBCU. Why would he think he couldn’t do it again?

“Been there before,” Parson said matter-of-factly. “Just gotta stay solid and move on to the next game and just stay prepared to go.”

He's hoping the HBCU Legacy Bowl will help his chances.

The post HBCU Legacy Bowl could be platform for tall, fast WR appeared first on HBCU Gameday.

]]>
Joaquin Davis is taking his next step toward professional football, training at the Duke Sports Performance Institute in preparation for the HBCU Legacy Bowl. The North Carolina Central wide receiver knows what’s at stake, and he’s putting in the work to make sure he’s ready for his shot.

“I feel like working out here has been everything I needed and more,” Davis said. “From the people to the nutrition to the weight room to the speed coach—everything is everything I need to prepare myself for that next level.”

Davis took a unique path to North Carolina Central. A standout athlete in both football and basketball at Charles E. Jordan High School in Durham, he initially played quarterback before transitioning to receiver. That switch came with challenges, but it was head coach Trei Oliver who believed in him early on.

“I didn’t really have a lot of interest coming out of high school because I played quarterback,” Davis explained. “A lot of coaches wanted to see me at wide receiver, but Coach Oliver was the only one who really believed in my talent and wanted me to come to Central. That’s who I chose, and the rest is history.”

That decision paid off, as Davis became a key piece in North Carolina Central’s rise to prominance. During his time with the Eagles, the program won big games, including the Celebration Bowl. It was an experience he says helped shape him as a player.

“Coach Oliver told me when he recruited me that we were going to be playing in big games,” Davis said. “Being at Central was everything I needed and more. We played in all the classic games, and I don’t think we lost a classic game since I’ve been here.”

HBCU Legacy Bowl, Joaquin Davis

His versatility has been shaped by playing with different quarterbacks, from Davius Richard, who set multiple NCCU records, to Walker Harris, who brought a different style under center.

“Playing with two different quarterbacks in two different dynamics like that, when I get to that next level, anybody I play with, I’m going to be ready for,” Davis said.

At 6-foot-4, 195 pounds, Davis possesses a blend of size and agility that makes him a dangerous target. He credits his basketball background for helping him develop fluidity as a receiver.

“Basketball is kind of the same movements as football—crossovers and things like that,” he said. “So just me being a fluid wide receiver kind of comes from my basketball background.”

With the HBCU Legacy Bowl on the horizon, Davis has a clear vision of what he wants to prove as he works out with other former HBCU stars and NFL Draft prospects through Empower Athlete Strategies.

“It’s very important for HBCU guys to go down there and show what they have,” he said. “Even with the combine, I feel like it’s a great addition for HBCU football. Just like guys went down there last year and turned a lot of heads, I’m going to do the same thing.”

For Davis, his motivation comes from more than just football. He’s driven by the sacrifices his mother made for him growing up.

“My mother is the main thing,” Davis said. “Seeing her get up and go to work every day, no matter what she was going through, she had to pay the bills. Just always being the underdog and overlooked—it drives me every day and is going to continue to.”

Now, with the HBCU Legacy Bowl as his stage, Davis is ready to prove that he belongs at the next level.

DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University (NCCU) head football coach Trei Oliver has announced additions to his HBCU football coaching staff heading into the 2025 season.

Jesse Thompson, who was the safeties coach in 2024, has been promoted to defensive coordinator. Thompson is no stranger to being a coordinator at the FCS level; prior to joining the Eagles in 2024, he was the defensive coordinator at SWAC HBCU Mississippi Valley State.

NCCU had 13 interceptions on defense last season, tied for the second most in the MEAC, and defensive back Malcolm Reed was second in the conference with nine pass breakups.

The new safeties coach in 2025 will be Michael Sewell, returning to the Maroon and Gray after spending 2024 as a defensive assistant at Miami University. Sewell was the Eagles’ safety coach in 2022 and 2023, winning a MEAC title and the Cricket Celebration Bowl.

In addition, defensive back Khalil Baker was the MEAC’s Defensive Player of the Year in 2022.

Charles Bankins will be the new running backs coach, joining the Eagles after one season at rival North Carolina A&T and two at Memphis. While special teams coordinator with the Tigers, Bankins won the SERVPRO First Responder Bowl over Utah State.

He comes to Durham with more than 25 years of collegiate coaching experience, with stops at Charlotte, Old Dominion, Vanderbilt, Maryland, Richmond, and Hampton. He has also coached in the NFL, with the then-St. Louis Rams.

Tim Cross brings more than 20 years of coaching experience to the NCCU Eagles, for whom he will serve as defensive line coach. He spent five seasons as defensive line coach in Chapel Hill under Hall of Fame head coach Mack Brown.

HBCU NCCU

In his time at North Carolina, and before that stops at Air Force, Texas, Minnesota and Syracuse, Cross has helped develop 56 players who went on to play in the NFL.

Macander Dieudonne will be the Eagles’ offensive line coach. He spent the last two seasons as a senior offensive analyst with Coastal Carolina, coaching two all-conference linemen and producing one of the best blocking and rushing units in the Sun Belt Conference.

He has also coached at Utah State, Benedict College, Southern, and his alma mater, Webber International University in Lake Wales, Fla.

Norfolk State delivered an instant classic in the world of HBCU basketball on Monday night, securing a dramatic 81-78 win over North Carolina Central in front of a roaring crowd at Echols Hall.

Brian Moore banked in a one-footed 3-pointer with .7 seconds left to give NSU the win over NCCU.

The MEAC showdown showcased the grit and resilience of two historic HBCU programs, but it was the Spartans who found a way to emerge victorious in thrilling fashion.

Trailing by double digits in the second half, Norfolk State (16-8, 5-1 MEAC) refused to back down. Led by Moore’s sensational 19-point performance—17 of which came in the final 20 minutes—the Spartans mounted a furious rally. Jaylani Darden and Kuluel Mading each made crucial plays down the stretch, keeping the home team within striking distance as the final minutes ticked away.

North Carolina Central (10-13, 3-3) appeared to have control, stretching its lead to 78-74 with just over a minute left. But the Spartans responded with timely offensive rebounds, a tough putback from Jones, and a relentless defensive stand that forced a shot clock violation. With 2.2 seconds remaining, Norfolk State had one last chance.

Robert Jones, Norfolk State

Darden inbounded to Mading near half court, who found a sprinting Moore. In a moment that will be remembered in HBCU basketball lore, the senior guard launched a deep three from the Spartan logo. The ball banked in off the glass as the buzzer sounded, sending Echols Hall into a frenzy.

The deafening celebration briefly delayed the final moments, but after order was restored, Norfolk State sealed the win. NSU head coach Robert Jones praised his team’s resilience, calling the victory a testament to their championship mindset.

“Another hard fought MEAC conference game,” Norfolk State head coach Robert Jones said. “It just showed the resilience that we have. I think championship teams find a way to win, so we found a way to win and hopefully that will bode well for us in the future.”

It was more than just a conference win for Norfolk State —it was a statement.

In a battle between HBCU powerhouses, the Spartans proved that when the lights are brightest, they shine the most.

DURHAM, NC —What a difference a year in the HBCU basketball world has made for North Carolina Central’s Issac Parson.

A year ago he was playing for Cleo Hill Jr. and with KC Shaw at Winston-Salem State, hoping to defend its CIAA title. Saturday Parson faced off against Shaw and Hill with all three wearing maroon instead of red as Maryland-Eastern Shore came down to Durham to face Parson and his new squad.

The competition between the two teammates was definitely real on the court. Shaw swatted away a would-be layup by his former point guard, and Parson later took on the challenge of guarding a much-taller Shaw. Both players’ families made the trip to the sparingly attended game on a cold, icy weekend.

Ultimately, though, the night belonged to Parson and NCCU. The home team raced off to a dominant start and finished with an 88-66 win for its MEAC victory of the season. Parson had one of his more complete games of the season, scoring 13 points while registering five assists (and just two turnovers) and two steals as he got the better of his former teammate and head coach.

Issac Parson, North Carolina Central,

“I thought it was going to be more of a competition. But we’ll see them next time,” said Parson, who played three years under Hill and two with Shaw. “It was good seeing KC — KC’s been doing. I hope he stays healthy, keep doing good. It was fun, definitely.”

Shaw scored 15 points, tying for the team with his brother Kyrell Shaw. A year ago, that would have been a promising game for the 6’5 guard as a sophomore at WSSU. Shaw saw his average jump from under five points as a freshman to just under 11 a game last year. But after following Hill to the Division I HBCU in June, Shaw went from the third option to no. 1, and he came into the game averaging a MEAC-high 18 points. However, through the first 20 minutes of the game, Shaw was held without a bucket.

North Carolina Central coach LeVelle Moton made it clear that limiting Shaw was a key part of his team’s plan coming into the game.

“He’s a really good player,” Moton said. “We had to take it personally.”

Head to Page Two to read about Parson’s development at NCCU.

In a classic HBCU showdown, North Carolina Central University (NCCU) gutted out a 92-86 double-overtime victory over Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) at McDougald-McLendon Arena. Dressing just eight players, the Eagles (1-2 MEAC, 3-14 overall) earned their first conference win of the season in dramatic fashion, finishing the final 25 seconds with only four players on the court.

Sophomore guards Kyla Bryant and Aysia Hinton delivered career performances to lead the undermanned Eagles. Bryant erupted for 32 points, including a remarkable 20-for-21 performance from the free-throw line, while Hinton posted a double-double with 23 points and 12 rebounds. The team’s 44 made free throws and 56 attempts both set NCCU women’s basketball records.

HBCU, North Carolina Central
Bryant has been on a tear recently for NCCU.

Trailing by 11 points in the second half, the Eagles mounted an inspired comeback. Bryant’s three clutch free throws with three seconds left in regulation forced overtime. In the first extra period, Hinton hit a critical three-pointer to tie the game at 77. Despite four Eagles fouling out, including Bryant with 30 seconds remaining in the second overtime, the team’s resilience shone through.

The crowd played a pivotal role in energizing North Carolina Central, who turned the tide with aggressive drives and stifling defense. “The crowd definitely played a role,” Bryant said. “They fed us.”

UMES (0-2 MEAC, 5-12 overall) held a significant edge in the paint but couldn’t overcome NCCU’s free-throw dominance or late-game heroics. Hinton sealed the victory with clutch free throws, and Laila Lewis capped the game with a steal.

“The win gives us confidence and lets us know no matter how many bodies we have, we can still win the game, and that we can compete with every team in the MEAC,” Hinton said.

NCCU returns to action Monday against Delaware State, hoping to build on their thrilling HBCU victory.

EAST GREENSBORO, NC — One of the fiercest HBCU basketball rivalries got the spotlight on Saturday afternoon as North Carolina A&T hosted North Carolina Central on CBS. NC A&T took the lead late in the first half and never looked back, beating its in-state rival 85-72 thanks to some prolific scoring from its guards and a big lift from its Greek import.

Ryan Forest scored a game-high 30 points on 12-for-18 shooting while Landon Glasper added 25, including five 3-pointers.

“It’s funny because — we were talking about this — that they hadn’t played well together all year long,” NC A&T coach Monte Ross said after the game of Forest and Glasper’s performance. “To see them do it — and both of them do it in different fashions — it was really good, and it just shows, what we can do… what we can be as we move forward.”

Those numbers were eye-popping — but they weren’t the only ones that made you look twice.

North Carolina A&T sophomore forward Nikolaos Chitikoudis stuffed the stat sheet with a game-high 22 rebounds — eight of them on offense — to go along with eight points, four assists and four blocks. His coach beamed with pride as he discussed his play against the HBCU rival.

“The selflessness that Chitikoudisis plays with is the key — will be the key for us as we move forward and to be able to win,” Ross said. We have guys that really like to score, and he’s just the glue and probably the most important guy that we have. Because he doesn’t care about scoring, he cares about winning. All he cares about is winning and what it takes and what it’s going to take for us to win and to. He had a performance like that off of, one day of practice because he was in concussion protocol.”

The win was a bit of the redemption for the Aggies, who were pummeled by their HBCU rivals from Durham during football season. Ross recalled a story of being in church shortly after the win and the pastor remarked that it was a great day to be an Eagle.

“Somebody from the back of the church — and we’re in church now — somebody from the back of the church yelled ‘it ain’t going to happen when basketball rolls around. And I’m like, oh my gosh,’ Ross said with a look of incredulousness on his face. “Like so it’s serious. It’s a serious rivalry.”

On this day, it was North Carolina’s CAA HBCU getting a win over North Carolina’s MEAC team.

Former HBCU star running back J’Mari Taylor, a 5-11, 200-pound redshirt junior from Charlotte, N.C., has officially committed to the University of Virginia of the ACC. After a stellar 2024 season with NCCU, Taylor decided following an official visit to Charlottesville. The West Mecklenburg High School product, known for his explosive play and versatility, now takes his talents from the MEAC to the ACC.

Taylor cited the supportive environment, strong coaching staff, and close-knit college-town vibe of Charlottesville as major reasons for his decision.

“The coaching staff really brought it out, and I talked to a couple of the players. It was a great environment to be around,” Taylor said in an interview with 247Sports. He also praised UVA head coach Tony Elliott, saying, “Coach E put a lot of things in perspective, and I really liked it” (via 247Sports).

Virginia running backs coach Keith Gaither also played a pivotal role in Taylor’s decision to come to the ACC squad. “Man, Coach Gaither, that’d be my guy,” Taylor told 247Sports. “He’s always energetic, keeps it real, and gives you the best advice for yourself.”

Taylor has been a force on the field, finishing his 2024 season with 1,146 rushing yards, 15 touchdowns, and 30 receptions for 271 yards and two more scores. His standout performances at NCCU solidified his reputation as one of the most dynamic running backs in HBCU football, making him an attractive target for Power 4 programs.

Virginia needed reinforcements in its backfield after the departure of Kobe Pace, and Taylor’s skill set fits perfectly into the Cavaliers’ plans. The running back room will now feature Taylor alongside Xavier Brown and Noah Vaughn, as well as incoming freshman Xay Davis, giving the Cavaliers much-needed depth and versatility.

Taylor’s departure is a significant loss for North Carolina Central, which ended the 2024 season with an impressive 8-3 record.

The Eagles showcased their strength in the MEAC, solidifying their reputation as one of the premier HBCU football programs in the nation. Taylor’s contributions were pivotal to the team’s success, and his transition to Virginia reflects the level of talent that NCCU continues to produce.

As Taylor moves on to the ACC, NCCU will look to build on its success and remain a dominant force in HBCU football.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The No. 19/18 Tennessee Lady Vols shattered multiple NCAA, SEC, and program records on Saturday in a 139-59 rout over North Carolina Central, an HBCU program. The victory at Food City Center highlighted Tennessee’s dominant offensive performance and continued their undefeated season at 8-0.

Tennessee broke the NCAA single-game record for three-pointers, hitting 30 from beyond the arc, and set SEC and school records for points in a game. The Lady Vols attempted 63 three-pointers, also a program and conference best. Their scoring output eclipsed the previous school record of 133 points set in 2002 and marked the most points ever scored by an SEC team.

Senior guard Samara Spencer led the offensive explosion, setting a Tennessee program record with nine three-pointers on 13 attempts. She finished with a career-high 33 points and 10 assists, recording her first double-double as a Lady Vol. Redshirt sophomore guard Talaysia Cooper added five three-pointers, scoring 21 points for her fifth consecutive 20-point game. Fifth-year player Tess Darby also chipped in with five threes and a season-high 17 points. In total, six Lady Vols scored in double figures.

Tennessee, SEC, HBCU

North Carolina Central, an HBCU team still seeking its first win of the season, was led by Shakiria Foster with 17 points and Terriana Gray with 10. The Eagles struggled against Tennessee’s suffocating defense, committing 44 turnovers—third-most ever by a Lady Vols opponent.

The Lady Vols opened the game with a commanding 20-0 run, forcing two early timeouts from the Eagles. Spencer and Cooper set the tone, combining for five three-pointers in the first quarter alone. By halftime, Tennessee had drained 16 threes, tying the program record for a full game, and built a 69-18 lead. Spencer’s six first-half threes highlighted an unstoppable offense shooting 44.4% from beyond the arc.

In the second half, Tennessee continued to dominate, with Spencer hitting the team’s record-breaking 17th three-pointer early in the third quarter. The Lady Vols finished the game shooting 52.2% overall and 47.6% from deep. The 139 points broke the SEC record for scoring in a single game and cemented Tennessee’s spot in the NCAA history books.

Despite their struggles, North Carolina Central, an HBCU program, battled throughout the game. However, they could not overcome Tennessee’s historic performance, as the SEC squad extended its home winning streak to eight games. Tennessee’s relentless offensive and defensive pressure set a benchmark in NCAA, SEC, and HBCU basketball history.

This will equip students and researchers with the tools and technology they need to continue to soar.”

  • North Carolina Representative Zack Hawkins

“This investment from Google, one of the City of Durham’s newest corporate community members into North Carolina Central University, a foundational institution in Durham exemplifies the public-private partnerships that we’d like to have in our city. The NCCU AI Institute will place NCCU and the City of Durham at the forefront of innovation in AI research and ensure that equity is considered as this technology is developed.”

  • Durham Mayor Pro Tempore Mark-Anthony Middleton

“It is well-known that Google has invested heavily in its North Carolina business presence. But their support of initiatives such as the Institute for Artificial Intelligence and Equity Research at NC Central University is evidence of the company’s commitment to ethical and inclusive advances in the use of AI.”

KENNESAW, Ga. – Jerry Mack, a veteran collegiate coach with 20 years of experience and five conference championships, has been named the second football head coach in Kennesaw State history, Director of Athletics Milton Overton announced Sunday. Jerry Mack’s last head coaching job was at Durham, NC-based HBCU North Carolina Central University (NCCU,) where he led the Eagles from 2014 to 2017

Mack comes to Kennesaw State after a season as the running backs coach with the Jacksonville Jaguars and three seasons as the running backs coach at Tennessee.

“After an extensive national search, I would like to welcome coach Jerry Mack, his wife, Starlett, and family to Owl Nation as our head football coach,” said Overton. “Coach Mack’s values and professional qualifications align with the strategic direction of our football program. He has 20 years of coaching experience at all levels, has shown a longstanding ability to connect with players, and owns a relentless recruiting mindset. Coach Mack has proven experience running up-tempo and productive offensive schemes.”

“My family and I are extremely excited to join the Owl family! I want to thank Director of Athletics Milton Overton and President Kathy Schwaig for this phenomenal opportunity. KSU is one of the fastest-growing institutions in the country with no ceiling on the potential opportunities it presents for our student-athletes,” said Mack. “I am grateful and honored to be entrusted as the leader and standard bearer of our team. I’m looking forward to helping our young men build on the success of our program, obtain degrees, win championships, and develop into great citizens that our KSU family will be proud of.”

Tennessee compiled a 27-12 record with Mack on staff, providing an immediate impact in his first season in Knoxville. Thanks to a bevy of backs and an electric, up-tempo offense, Tennessee jumped 73 spots in the FBS over its previous year to rank 11th nationally in Mack’s first season, putting up 217.8 rushing yards per game in 2021.

The Vols shattered eight offensive records in 2021 and ranked in the top 25 nationally in scoring offense (39.3 – seventh), total offense (474.9 – ninth), rushing offense (217.8 – 11th), offensive yards per play (6.5 – 17th) and third down offense (44.7 – 25th).

Under Mack’s tutelage, Jabari Small led the Vols in rushing with 141 carries for 796 yards and nine touchdowns, which tied for eighth in the SEC. Len’Neth Whitehead and Jaylen Wright also burst onto the scene as freshmen under Mack’s tutelage with each earning SEC Freshman of the Week honors during the year and combining for 616 rushing yards and six touchdowns.

In four seasons at North Carolina Central, Mack led the Eagles to at least a share of three consecutive Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference championships and a berth in the 2016 Celebration Bowl, which pits the champions of the MEAC and SWAC each December. He compiled a 31-15 record in four seasons as one of the youngest head coaches at the FBS/FCS level. He was named the 2016 HBCU Football Coach of the Year by Black College Sports Page and The Pigskin Club in Washington, D.C., after NCCU smashed its school record for offense on its way to the Celebration Bowl.

Jerry Mack led the 2014 Eagles to the most victories in the program’s FCS tenure with a 7-5 overall record and a share of the MEAC Championship. The team also earned the program’s first win over a nationally ranked FCS opponent by defeating No. 24 North Carolina A&T in the final game of the season. NCCU broke the school record for pass completions in a season with 227 and ranked third in the FCS in turnover margin at +12.0.

In his second season at NCCU, Mack guided the 2015 Eagles to an 8-3 overall record and a 7-1 conference mark to repeat as MEAC co-champions. For the second-straight year, the Eagles beat a nationally ranked FCS opponent (No. 13/16 North Carolina A&T), this time closing out the campaign with a seven-game win streak. Mack became the first head coach in school history to win 15 games in his first two seasons. He was recognized as a finalist for the STATS FCS Coach of the Year award and was named the Black College Sports Page “Baad Team” Coach of the Year.

In his third season at NCCU, the Eagles received their first national ranking as an FCS program on Nov. 7, 2016, when the FCS Coaches Poll announced NCCU at No. 25. By the end of the regular season, the Eagles jumped to No. 18. NCCU (9-3, 8-0 MEAC) beat No. 9 North Carolina A&T, 42-21, on Nov. 19 to capture the outright MEAC championship and a trip to the second annual Air Force Reserve Celebration Bowl.

NCCU’s nine victories in 2016 were the most by the Eagles in the program’s Division I era. In recognition of his success in 2016, Mack was named the MEAC Football Coach of the Year, American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) FCS Regional Coach of the Year, and as one of 15 finalists for the Eddie Robinson Award as the FCS Coach of the Year. He was also recognized as the HBCU Football Coach of the Year by Black College Sports Page and The Pigskin Club in Washington, D.C., and the HBCU Male Coach of the Year by HBCU Digest.

An introductory event will be held at Kennesaw State on Tuesday at 11 a.m. The event will be streamed live at KSUOwls.com.

The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) has expanded its disciplinary actions following the post-game brawl between Howard University and North Carolina Central University in Durham on Friday night. Howard University now faces additional scrutiny as a member of its coaching staff has been suspended, bringing the total number of individuals disciplined to 37.

In a statement released Monday, MEAC Commissioner Sonja Stills announced that a Howard University assistant football coach has been suspended for violating MEAC Bylaws. The suspension follows the review of additional video footage of the altercation, which involved players, staff, and coaches from both Howard University and North Carolina Central.

The assistant coach will be barred from participating in Howard University’s season finale against Morgan State University on Saturday, November 23. This development adds to the growing list of consequences for both programs following the melee, which has drawn significant attention to the conference’s efforts to uphold sportsmanship and discipline.

The MEAC had initially announced suspensions for dozens of players from both teams after the incident. The latest suspension emphasizes the serious approach the conference is taking to address the fallout and prevent future incidents.

Howard University head coach Larry Scott was asked about the incident on Monday’s MEAC coaches call.

“At the end of the day we’re going to talk about the competitive that lies between the white lines,” Scott said. “Right. Keep it about the game, and the game only. And at the end of the day you got to tip your hat, have class and all those things, whether you’re in the winning side of it or the losing side of it. Have class and take it with… that you have to have a whole lot of sportsmanship.

“And in this business, if you want to be in football and continue to play football at this level, it’s going to get high. It’s going to be competitive. But at the same time, you got to understand this class about who you are and what you represent. And always carry yourself in that fashion first and foremost. And if we can always talk about that and the character in the class that it takes to be, you know, have the great sportsmanship that we all talked about that you need, in order to continue to rise and elevate in this sport.”

The MEAC has stated that no further comments will be issued on the matter, leaving Howard University and North Carolina Central to move forward under the shadow of the unprecedented disciplinary action. For Howard, the focus now shifts to regrouping for their final game of the season amidst these challenges.

NORFOLK, VA?– The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) is conducting a comprehensive review of the post-game altercation that occurred following the Howard vs. North Carolina Central football game on Friday, November 15.

“This was a very unfortunate incident, and we are taking it with the utmost seriousness,” said MEAC Commissioner Sonja Stills. “The MEAC holds its student-athletes, coaches, and staff to the highest standards of sportsmanship and professionalism. We are committed
to thoroughly reviewing this matter and will take appropriate disciplinary action based on our findings.”

The MEAC will issue an official statement upon completing its review, which will include an evaluation of video footage of the incident and reports from game officials, neutral observers, coaches, athletic staff, and the student-athletes involved.

About the post-game altercation

The game ended in a decisive 26-3 win for North Carolina Central. But shortly after NCCU head coach Trei Oliver and HU head coach Larry Scott shook hands things descended into chaos with pushing, shoving and punching between players and coaches as well. The action went on for well over five minutes before the two teams separated and moved towards their locker rooms.

A few minutes later things began to bubble up in the parking lot near the visiting locker room, with multiple sources indicating North Carolina Central assistant coaches were involved in another altercation.

NC Central head coach Trei Oliver was asked if — given the chippy-ness in the game and the history between the two programs, he thought about not sending his team out to shake hands.

“I always shake hands. Last year I didn’t like the vibe at the end of the game, so I told my guys to go to the locker room,” Oliver said. “I went across the field and shook the coach’s hand. I took the loss. I was down there talking to another coach, I didn’t see what happened, but that’s not our football team. That’s not who we are, I don’t care what happened. We go to the locker room. Go to the band, then go to the locker room. That’s not us, that’s not who we are. That won’t be tolerated in my program.”

North Carolina Central University (NCCU) overcame early struggles in the red zone to earn a commanding 26-3 win over Howard University on Friday night at O’Kelly-Riddick Stadium. The victory kept the Eagles’ hopes alive for the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) championship and a potential Celebration Bowl berth.

Howard opened the scoring late in the first quarter with a 36-yard field goal by Dylan West. NCCU responded with a promising drive but missed a 34-yard field goal attempt. Another opportunity came in the second quarter when the Eagles drove to Howard’s 3-yard line, only to lose possession on a fumble. The struggles continued when a second field goal attempt was blocked.

NCCU finally broke through late in the second quarter as Walker Harris found Chris Mosley for a 12-yard touchdown pass, giving the Eagles a slim 6-3 halftime lead.

In the second half, NCCU’s offense hit its stride, largely behind the explosive play of J’Mari Taylor. The junior running back delivered a sensational 61-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, extending the lead to 13-3. Taylor added two more rushing touchdowns in the fourth quarter, from 18 and 40 yards, finishing with 206 rushing yards on 24 carries and three scores.

Meanwhile, the North Carolina Central defense dominated, holding Howard to just 121 total yards, six first downs, and six sacks. The Bison were unable to convert any of their 13 third-down attempts.

With the win, NCCU improved to 7-3 overall and 3-1 in MEAC play. However, for the Eagles to claim the MEAC title, South Carolina State must lose its final two games against Morgan State and Norfolk State. A South Carolina State win on Saturday would eliminate NCCU from championship contention and secure the Celebration Bowl bid for the Bulldogs.

DURHAM, NC — A Friday night showcase of top HBCU football programs turned into Fight Night after the game between North Carolina Central and Howard University.

North Carolina Central, Howard University, HBCU Gameday

The tension hung over the game like the cloud of smoke emanating from NCCU’s industrial center at the edge of venerable O’Kelly-Riddick Stadium. You could credit Howard’s frustration at being unable to take advantage of a standout performance from its defense and special teams in the first half, as it accumulated just 113 yards of total offense.

But go back a few months ago to the HBCU Legacy Bowl, when Howard University coach Larry Scott ran former NCCU quarterback Davius Richard on a goal-line play, leading to an injury that kept him out of proper NFL Draft workouts. Oliver instinctively aired out his displeasure via Twitter

“I promise he would not have played if I knew that those dumbass coaches were going to run him,” Oliver wrote. He later apologized and rectracted his statement.

But even before that, the two programs spent the last two years battling for MEAC supremacy, which was also a point of contention within itself.

Howard University claimed a share of the 2022 MEAC title based on record even though NCCU put up 50 points on it in a head-to-head win that propelled it to the Celebration Bowl. Oliver was annoyed by the co-champion claim as his team went on to win the HBCU national title by knocking off Jackson State in the Celebration Bowl. Howard returned the favor last fall when it handed NCCU a 50-20 loss to take the lead and claim the MEAC title and moved on to the Celebration Bowl.

These two programs aren’t traditionally rival HBCU football programs, but that would be hard to tell given the back-and-forth between them over the past few seasons.

Rivalries are compelling and fun, and they do often involve fights. But Friday night’s unscheduled bout between the two schools, captured on ESPN, was a bad look for both programs and should not be swept under the rug by the universities or the MEAC. All eyes will be on Norfolk, VA to make sure things don’t get that out of control again.

ORANGEBURG, SC — South Carolina State made a statement in HBCU football Thursday night by toppling MEAC favorite North Carolina Central on its home turf in Orangeburg. With a 24-21 victory, SC State seized control of the MEAC and now leads the race to the Celebration Bowl, setting the stage for a potential HBCU championship bid.

From the opening drive, South Carolina State (6-2, 2-0 MEAC) dominated time of possession, showcasing their grit and resilience in front of a home crowd of over 11,000. The Bulldogs took a 10-point lead early, with quarterback Eric Phoenix leading efficient drives that kept the NCCU defense on its heels. Phoenix was key to SC State’s success, passing for 321 yards and two touchdowns, as well as rushing for another. HBCU fans saw his stellar connection with receiver Caden High, who hauled in two touchdown catches, including a clutch 42-yarder late in the third quarter that extended SC State’s lead.

NC Central (6-3, 2-1 MEAC), fighting to keep its Celebration Bowl hopes alive, rallied in the fourth quarter, scoring twice to close the gap. However, South Carolina State’s defense stepped up, applying pressure on NCCU quarterback Walker Harris with four sacks and timely stops. HBCU supporters nationwide will recognize the impact of this win, as SC State now holds the upper hand in the MEAC standings.

For HBCU football, this victory reaffirms South Carolina State’s prominence in the MEAC and highlights their bid for a Celebration Bowl appearance. With this momentum, SC State is now the team to beat as it moves forward in MEAC play. The win gives SC State a potential tie-breaker with NCCU should it suffer another MEAC loss. NCCU will have to win out and hope that two of SCSU’s final three opponents hand it a defeat to get back to the Celebration Bowl for the first time since 2022.

First-year South Carolina State head coach Chennis Berry improved to 4-0 all-time on Thursday night games, winning his first one with SCSU after going 3-0 with Benedict College over the previous three seasons. Despite his team’s now lofty position, he holds steadfast to his mantra of going ‘1-0’ every week.

“We’re going to we’re going to enjoy this,” Berry said after the game. “Trust me, winning is hard. So we’re going to enjoy this one for 24 hours. And then we’re going to put this one to bed. And then we’re going to get ready for a good Howard University football team.”

The Bulldogs are not only defending their home turf but also strengthening their legacy in HBCU athletics, proving they are a force in the quest for HBCU football supremacy.

DURHAM, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University (NCCU) football team celebrated Homecoming with a 16-7 victory over Morgan State on Saturday at O’Kelly-Riddick Stadium, holding the Bears to just over 200 yards of total offense.

Statistics 1 2 3 4 OT Total

The No. 20/21 Eagles (6-2, 2-0 MEAC) have won five straight games.

The Eagles got on the board first when quarterback Walker Harris connected with Markell Quick on a deep pass up the middle for a 49-yard touchdown to take a 7-0 lead. That play, at the 7:06 mark of the second quarter, capped a 4-play, 76-yard drive.

That score held at the half.

Midway through the third quarter, after the Eagles went 52 yards on eight plays, Kaleb Robison made his first career field goal from 21 yards to grow the lead to 10-0.

Morgan State made it a one-possession game with the 9:58 mark of the fourth quarter, taking advantage of a rare Harris interception when Jason Collins, Jr. capped an 8-play, 34-yard drive with a 2-yard score to trim the Eagles’ lead to 10-7.

The Eagles answered on the ensuing drive. On the sixth play of a drive that started on the NCCU 27-yard line, J’Mari Taylor kept his touchdown streak alive with a 50-yard run to the end zone. With 6:37 to play, the Eagles led 16-7.

The Bears (3-4, 0-1) had one more chance, but Thomas Jackson sacked quarterback Tahj Smith on 4th-and-10 with 4:24 remaining to end the drive and give the ball back to the Eagles.

Morgan State never touched the ball again, and the Eagles ran out the clock.

NCCU will hit the road this coming Thursday, heading to Orangeburg, S.C., to take on South Carolina State. The HBCU football game will air live on ESPNU at 7:30 p.m.

Thursday night’s MEAC showdown between North Carolina Central and South Carolina State is shaping up to be a game with high stakes for these two HBCU powerhouses. The North Carolina Central Eagles come into the game with big expectations, having been picked to win the MEAC and led by their seasoned head coach, Trey Oliver, who already boasts a Celebration Bowl victory. Meanwhile, SCSU is ready to shake things up under new head coach Chennis Berry. Berry brings fresh energy after his historic run with Benedict College in Division II, and the Bulldogs are looking to prove themselves as serious contenders.

The game’s significance runs deep for both teams. For North Carolina Central, a win would underscore their status as the MEAC’s top team, setting them up for a strong postseason push. For South Carolina State, this is a chance to play spoiler and disrupt the Eagles’ title dreams. With both HBCU fanbases rallying behind their teams, this game could shift the season narrative and heat up the conference race.

What North Carolina Central Needs to Do to Win:

  1. Walker Harris Needs to Shine: Harris has been a force at quarterback, throwing 15 touchdowns and only four interceptions. His leadership under center has been instrumental for North Carolina Central, and against a tough South Carolina State secondary, Harris will need to stay sharp. He’ll look to connect with top receivers like Markell Quick and Joaquin Davis, who can exploit gaps and stretch the field.
  2. Keep Feeding J’Mari Taylor: Taylor, averaging over 98 yards per game, is the workhorse in the run game and a major asset in the red zone. Taylor’s ability to break tackles and find the end zone will be key to putting South Carolina State on their heels.

What South Carolina State Needs to Do to Win:

  1. Protect Eric Phoenix: Phoenix has shown his passing power this season, throwing 14 touchdowns. However, North Carolina Central will be looking to pressure him. South Carolina State’s offensive line, which has allowed only 11 sacks, must be at their best to keep Phoenix upright and productive.
  2. Get Points Early and Control the Clock: If South Carolina State can get an early lead, they’ll have the chance to control the game’s tempo. The Bulldogs’ red-zone efficiency and reliance on big plays from receivers like Caden High will be essential.

As the Eagles aim to dominate and South Carolina State looks to play spoiler, this HBCU matchup promises intensity from the opening kickoff. For Walker Harris and the North Carolina Central offense, a victory solidifies their conference lead and strengthens their Celebration Bowl hopes, while South Carolina State would love nothing more than to rewrite the MEAC script.

It’s a battle of HBCU giants where every play counts, and every yard could mean the difference between victory and heartbreak.

The first week of HBCU football in the MEAC provided a clear look at team strengths, key players, and areas needing improvement. As the season unfolds, North Carolina Central and South Carolina State have emerged as top contenders, while other teams face challenges in offense and consistency. Here’s what we’ve learned about each team, the standout players making an impact, and their strengths and weaknesses.

North Carolina Central University (NCCU): The Class of the MEAC

Key Players: Walker Harris (QB), J’Mari Taylor (RB), Jaki Brevard (LB)

  • Strengths: Balanced, Adaptive Offense, Efficient Defense
  • Weaknesses: Depth in Secondary Pass Coverage

NCCU entered MEAC play as a preseason favorite, and its early performance has justified that ranking. Quarterback Walker Harris efficiently leads a balanced offense, skillfully blending passing with a strong ground game led by running back J’Mari Taylor, who is averaging close to 100 yards per game. On defense, linebacker Jaki Brevard anchors a disciplined unit that excels in third-down stops and red-zone play.

While NCCU’s defensive front is among the strongest in the MEAC, occasional lapses in secondary coverage could be tested by high-powered passing teams. Nonetheless, NCCU’s balanced and adaptable approach makes them the team to beat in the MEAC.

South Carolina State, MEAC, HBCU

South Carolina State University (SCSU): The Primary Challenger

Key Players: Eric Phoenix (QB), Caden High (WR), Jayden Broughton (DL)

  • Strengths: Explosive Offense, Strong Run Defense
  • Weaknesses: Vulnerabilities in Pass Defense

South Carolina State has emerged as the only real challenger to NCCU’s dominance. Quarterback Eric Phoenix is among the MEAC’s top quarterbacks, leading an offense with big-play potential, particularly with deep targets like wide receiver Caden High. SCSU’s passing game is explosive, creating consistent threats to score. Jayden Broughton, a dominant force on the defensive line, reinforces a strong run-stopping defense.

However, SCSU’s secondary has shown vulnerability, sometimes allowing big gains through the air. While their aggressive defensive approach creates turnovers, it can leave them exposed to strong passing attacks. For South Carolina State to compete at the top, tightening their pass defense will be essential.

Morgan State University: Defense Delivers, Offense Struggles

Key Players: Elijah Williams (DL), Arturo Mattocks (LB), Myles Miree (RB)

  • Strengths: Dominant Defense, Effective Pass Rush
  • Weaknesses: Limited Offensive Production

Morgan State’s defense, led by standout linemen Elijah Williams and linebacker Arturo Mattocks, has delivered on its preseason expectations, consistently generating pressure, tackles for loss, and quarterback sacks. Their defense has kept them competitive, making Morgan a tough opponent to score against.

However, its offense has struggled to produce points. Running back Myles Miree leads their conservative ground game, but limited passing success leaves them predictable. Morgan State’s success this season will hinge on whether they can generate more offensive yards to support their defense.

Howard University: Defensive Bright Spots, Inconsistent Quarterback Play

Key Players: Ja’Shawn Scroggins (QB), Kenny Gallop Jr. (S), Jarett Hunter (RB)

  • Strengths: Versatile Defense, Strong Pass Coverage
  • Weaknesses: Inconsistent Quarterback Play, Offensive Efficiency

Howard came into the season with high expectations, but inconsistent quarterback play from Ja’Shawn Scroggins has hampered offensive success. Scroggins’ struggles with accuracy have stalled drives, despite solid ground support from running back Jarett Hunter. On defense, safety Kenny Gallop Jr. has been a consistent playmaker, leading a strong pass defense that generates turnovers.

While Howard’s defense is effective at limiting high-scoring opponents, the team’s success will depend on more reliable quarterback play. If Scroggins can improve his decision-making, Howard has the potential to challenge the MEAC’s top teams.

Delaware State University: Consistent but Limited

Key Players: Jaden Sutton (RB), Marqui Adams (QB), Kahleef Jimmison (LB)

  • Strengths: Steady Rushing Game, Disciplined Defense
  • Weaknesses: Limited Passing Attack, Depth on Defense

Delaware State’s performance closely aligns with preseason expectations. Running back Jaden Sutton anchors a solid rushing game, while quarterback Marqui Adams provides steady, if not high-scoring, support. Linebacker Kahleef Jimmison leads a disciplined defense, but the team’s lack of depth in the secondary leaves them vulnerable against passing-focused teams.

For Delaware State to advance in the MEAC standings, they’ll need more offensive balance and defensive depth. Their strong running game has kept them competitive, but limited passing potential may hinder them against the conference’s top teams.

Norfolk State University: The Spoilers

Key Players: AJ Richardson (LB), Daylan Long (DB), Kevon King (RB)

  • Strengths: Effective Ground Game, Turnover Generation
  • Weaknesses: Inconsistent Passing, Defensive Depth

Norfolk State has shown potential as a dark horse in the MEAC, with linebacker AJ Richardson and defensive back Daylan Long leading a turnover-generating defense. Running back Kevon King drives their offense with a solid ground game. However, their passing game lacks consistency, limiting their scoring potential, especially against well-rounded defenses.

Norfolk State could create surprises in the MEAC standings if it establish a more reliable passing game. If it continues improving, it could upset the top teams and play spoiler as the HBCU season progresses.

Week 1 Takeaways and MEAC Outlook

Top Teams and Key Differences: North Carolina Central and South Carolina State have set the standard in MEAC HBCU football. NCCU’s balanced offense and South Carolina State’s big-play passing game position them as frontrunners. Morgan State’s stout defense is keeping them competitive, though offensive limitations hold them back. Howard’s season will hinge on improved quarterback play, while Delaware State and Norfolk State show potential to surprise as underdogs.

Key Players Defining MEAC Football: Quarterbacks Walker Harris (NCCU) and Eric Phoenix (SCSU) are driving the top offenses in the MEAC, while running backs like Jaden Sutton (Delaware State) and Myles Miree (Morgan State) are crucial to their teams’ ground games. Defensive leaders like Elijah Williams (Morgan State) and Kenny Gallop Jr. (Howard) are making key plays that keep their teams in the fight.

Early-season trends suggest North Carolina Central is the team to beat, with South Carolina State’s high-powered offense close behind as the HBCU national title picture takes shape. If teams like Morgan State, Howard, and Norfolk State can address offensive challenges, the MEAC season promises close games and potential upsets. Week 1 has set the stage for a dynamic season in HBCU football, with each team shaping its path in MEAC standings.

DURHAM, NC—The #20-ranked North Carolina Central University (NCCU) Eagles continued their winning streak with a solid 16-7 victory over the Morgan State Bears on Saturday at O’Kelly-Riddick Stadium in a pivotal HBCU homecoming matchup in the MEAC. Defensive strength was central to NCCU’s triumph, which gave them a 6-2 season record and 2-0 in MEAC play.

The game’s momentum shifted in the second quarter when NCCU’s Walker Harris connected with Markell Quick on a spectacular 49-yard touchdown pass, marking the Eagles’ first points after a slow start. This four-play, 76-yard drive in just under a minute set NCCU on track and showcased Harris’s precision and Quick’s speed. Quick finished with an impressive 96 receiving yards on five catches, establishing himself as a reliable target throughout the game.

Morgan State struggled to find its rhythm on offense, but in the fourth quarter, they narrowed the gap. A two-yard touchdown run by Jason Collins capped an 8-play, 34-yard drive that brought the score to 10-7, showing resilience against NCCU’s tough defense. Collins led Morgan’s rushing with 72 yards on 14 carries, providing a bright spot for the Bears.

However, the game’s most thrilling moment came shortly afterward when NCCU’s running back J’Mari Taylor broke through Morgan State’s defense for a 50-yard touchdown run, reestablishing a 16-7 lead and silencing any comeback hopes for the Bears. Taylor’s rushing ability dominated the game, accumulating 196 yards and a touchdown on 26 carries. His explosive plays in critical moments proved to be the decisive factor.

HBCU NCCU MEAC

Defensively, NCCU’s Thomas Johnson was relentless, recording three sacks and showcasing impressive pass-rushing skills. Morgan’s Elijah Williams also delivered a standout performance on defense, blocking a field goal attempt and recording two sacks, which kept Morgan State in contention.

This win solidifies NCCU’s control in the MEAC as they look ahead to a huge conference matchup on Halloween night with South Carolina State, one of the most anticipated HBCU football games of the year. Morgan State, now 3-5, will aim to regroup and address their offensive struggles as they continue their season.

Morgan State will face the North Carolina Central during NCCU’s Homecoming game, a pivotal clash in HBCU football this weekend. Both teams enter the contest with significant momentum, with NCCU boasting a high-powered offense and Morgan State fielding one of the stingiest defenses in the MEAC. The stakes are high as MEAC play begins, and both coaches are fully aware of what’s at hand.

For North Carolina Central (NCCU), led by head coach Trei Oliver, Homecoming week brings added motivation. Oliver emphasized the importance of focusing on execution as his team comes off a bye. “We walk into a hornet’s nest. It’s homecoming,” Oliver said. “You can take all the stats, all the games we’ve played through the last seven weeks, and throw it away. These are the five that matter.” The Eagles have their sights set on a potential Celebration Bowl appearance, and starting MEAC play strong will be crucial.

For Morgan State, head coach Damon Wilson aims to steer his team through a tough road test. Despite the challenge, Wilson remains optimistic, praising his defense and addressing special teams’ improvements during the bye week. “We know NCCU is going to capitalize on any errors, so we’ve been working on tightening up all week,” said Wilson. “This is going to be a physical football game… We have to play well in all three phases to have a chance to win the ball game.”

Key Matchup:

Morgan State’s defense will have to contain NCCU’s explosive offense, led by quarterback Walker Harris, who is supported by a solid rushing attack. Wilson knows this will be no easy feat.

“Their defense flies around, doesn’t give up a lot of big plays at all, and offensively, they’re hitting on all cylinders,” he remarked. Stopping NCCU’s rhythm and keeping its’ offense off the field will be critical for Morgan State.

Meanwhile, NCCU will focus on limiting mistakes and playing disciplined football. Oliver stressed the importance of early stops and converting opportunities in the red zone. “We’ve got to get some stops early defensively to give our offense an opportunity to try to put some points up,” Oliver said.

Keys to Victory:

  1. Morgan State:
    • Pressure Harris: Morgan State’s defense must disrupt NCCU’s passing game. Getting pressure upfront will be key to forcing mistakes.
    • Control the Clock: Wilson’s team will need to establish a strong ground game to limit NCCU’s offensive possessions.
    • Special Teams Execution: After addressing issues over the bye, Morgan State cannot afford special teams mistakes against a team like NCCU.

  2. North Carolina Central:
    • Exploit Weaknesses: The Eagles’ dynamic offense will need to capitalize on every opportunity, especially in the red zone.
    • Stop Morgan’s Ground Attack: If NCCU can contain Morgan’s rushing offense, they’ll force the Bears into uncomfortable third-and-long situations.
    • Avoid Turnovers: Turnovers could shift momentum quickly in a game like this. Playing smart, disciplined football will be key.

Both teams know this game could set the tone for the rest of the season. With MEAC play underway, each game carries significant weight, and with NCCU hosting the game during their Homecoming, the stakes are even higher. Wilson understands the challenge but remains confident in his team’s ability to rise to the occasion: “If we execute in all three phases, we’ll give ourselves a chance to win.”

Expect a classic HBCU showdown in Durham as the Eagles look to defend their home turf while Morgan State seeks to spoil NCCU’s Homecoming and start MEAC play strong.

As the HBCU football season heats up, four out of six MEAC programs are capitalizing on their bye weeks to recharge, while two teams prepare for one final non-conference test. With HBCU football powerhouse North Carolina Central University (NCCU) leading the way, the stakes are high as each game could determine the path to a conference title and a shot at postseason glory.

North Carolina Central (5-2, 1-0 MEAC)

NCCU is currently making waves in HBCU football, ranking No. 20 in the Stats Perform FCS Top-25 poll released on October 14, 2024 after a 68-0 win. This national recognition highlights their status as a top contender not just within the MEAC but across HBCU football. Head coach Trei Oliver shared how the bye week offers essential recovery time.

“The big thing is to get some rest. My players are young—they’re okay. I think my coaches probably need the rest more than the players,” Oliver said. “We’re gonna get these guys out of the building, let them spend time with their families.”

With two starting running backs nursing injuries, the rest period is crucial ahead of their October 26 homecoming showdown with Morgan State.

“The biggest thing is to reboot and come back fresh for next week… We’ve got a very tough Morgan State team coming in,” Oliver added. This matchup will be pivotal, as the Eagles aim to solidify their position as one of the best in MEAC and HBCU football.

Morgan State, MEAC, HBCU

Morgan State (2-4, 0-1 MEAC)

Morgan State enters its bye week eager to regroup following a challenging non-conference schedule. “This bye week comes right on time so we can get some guys back,” said head coach Damon Wilson. The Bears are focusing on fixing special teams issues and improving their third-down defense. Wilson is optimistic about his team’s chances against NCCU. “We’ll be ready to go for North Carolina Central’s homecoming,” he noted.

Delaware State (1-6)

After a 23-0 loss to Robert Morris, Delaware State is taking full advantage of the break.

“I gave our guys some time off… we all needed some time away from each other,” said head coach Lee Hull.

Preparing for its October 26 game against South Carolina State, Hull emphasized the need for changes.

“Sometimes doing the same thing over and over becomes monotonous… so we’re trying to put some new energy into it,” Hull explained, hoping to spark the program’s momentum in the MEAC standings.

Norfolk State (2-6, 0-1 MEAC)

Norfolk State is also using its bye to recover.

“This bye week is needed… We’ve been going hard since June 23rd,” said head coach Dawson Odums. After a narrow 28-23 loss to Towson, the team will use the break to reset before hosting Howard for homecoming on October 26.

“They probably need a break from us, and we need a break from them to get healthy,” Odums admitted.

With NCCU leading the MEAC and positioning itself as one of the top teams in HBCU football, the October 26 games will be crucial in shaping the season’s trajectory. As Oliver put it, “If you come out tiptoeing, you’ll get knocked out.”

The race to Atlanta and a potential Celebration Bowl appearance is on, with every team seeking to capitalize on their preparation and rest.

North Carolina Central University (NCCU) showed it is a force in HBCU football with a dominating 68-0 victory over Virginia-Lynchburg on Saturday.

The game, played at O’Kelly-Riddick Stadium, was a complete team effort, with NCCU excelling in every facet of the game against the non-NCAA HBCU squad. Here are five key stats that highlight the Eagles’ utter dominance:

1. Total Offense: North Carolina Central amassed 439 total yards compared to Virginia-Lynchburg’s mere 76 yards. This disparity underscores the Eagles’ control, as they averaged 9.1 yards per play while holding their opponents to just 1.8 yards per play.

2. Rushing Superiority: NCCU’s ground game was nearly unstoppable, piling up 326 rushing yards. Led by Zion Dobson and Aleni Mageo, the Eagles averaged a stunning 9.6 yards per carry, while Virginia-Lynchburg managed a dismal -1.9 yards per rush, finishing with -42 rushing yards.

3. First Downs: NCCU’s ability to move the ball was evident in their 24 first downs, more than tripling Virginia-Lynchburg’s total of just 3 first downs. Of NCCU’s first downs, 13 came via the run, further showcasing its offensive versatility.

North Carolina Central, HBCU

4. Penalties vs. Offensive Yards: Virginia-Lynchburg’s discipline issues compounded their struggles, as they recorded 135 penalty yards, which far exceeded their total of 76 offensive yards. This stat epitomized how difficult the day was for the visitors.

5. Defensive Shutdown: NCCU’s defense completely smothered Virginia-Lynchburg, holding them to 0-for-12 on third-down conversions. The defense also recorded five sacks and forced three turnovers, ensuring Virginia-Lynchburg never threatened to score.

This emphatic HBCU win not only highlights NCCU’s offensive and defensive prowess but also cements its position as a powerhouse. Their ability to dominate on both sides of the ball in all phases made this one of the most comprehensive victories of the season.

North Carolina Central University men’s basketball coach LeVelle Moton recently received a big honor.

Moton was recently a part of a ceremony, along with other Durham County recipients, to receive the The President’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

The President’s Lifetime Achievement Award, first introduced by President George H. W. Bush as part of the Points of Light industry, honors individuals who have made a lasting impact through volunteer work. This award is given to those who have devoted significant time and effort to improving their communities and making a positive difference in the lives of others.

North Carolina Central, LeVelle Moton

LeVelle Moton was a well-known basketball player in the Triangle area before coaching, competing for North Carolina Central in the late 1990s and receiving many accolades including the CIAA Player of the Year in 1996. He averaged 23.5 points per game in the 1994-95 season, scoring over 1,700 points before graduating.

Now as the head coach of his former team, Moton has become the all-time winningest men’s basketball coach at NC Central earning his 252nd victory last season. Known in his playing days as “Poetry in Moton,” he has made an even bigger impact by founding the Velle Cares Foundation hosting events for back-to-school, teachers of the month and his Single Mothers Salute celebration. Another project that hits close to home for Moton is the creation of affordable housing units as one of the owners of Raleigh Raised Developments.

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The NCCU football team picked up its third straight win on Saturday, upending Campbell University 45-14 at Barker-Lane Stadium.

The Eagles improved to 4-2 overall on the season.

The Eagles took their second drive of the game 94 yards for the first score, when quarterback Walker Harris connected with Joaquin Davis for a 5-yard touchdown pass to give N.C. Central an early 7-0 lead.

On the ensuing drive, NCCU defense forced a three-and-out by the Fighting Camels, then wide receiver Darryl Taylor took the punt 68 yards for a touchdown and put the Eagles up 14-0.

It was the Eagles’ second score on a punt this season; Trey Goodriddge recovered a blocked punt in the end zone two weeks ago against North Carolina A&T.

Special teams came up big again for the Eagles, following a botched snap on a Campbell punt, giving N.C. Central 1st-and-goal from the 1-yard line. On the ensuing play, J’Mari Taylor ran in for a touchdown, giving the Eagles a 21-0 lead.

NCCU took their final drive of the opening half 66 yards for a touchdown in just nine plays. Harris recorded his second rushing touchdown of the season from three yards.

The Eagles took a 28-0 lead into the locker room for the half.

The Camels got on the board in the third quarter, going 83 yards in four plays, ending in a 55-yard rushing touchdown by VJ Wilkins at the 6:19 mark to cut the lead to 28-7.

The Eagles responded to Campbell’s score in the final minute of the quarter, when Harris connected with Chauncey Spikes for a 10-yard pass, completing a 75-yard, 10-play drive that extended the Eagles’ lead to 35-7.
Juan Velarde added three more points to the Eagles’ total with a 43-yard field goal after N.C. Central notched a turnover on a fumble recovery by Matt Leavelle.

The Camels cut into the lead again after a rushing touchdown by Mike Chandler II for 72 yards to cap off an 80-yard, 2-play drive with 13:36 left in the contest.

But the Eagles rebutted the Camels’ score with a two-play drive of their own. Christian Mosley scored on a 57-yard run with 12:55 remaining to extend N.C. Central’s lead to 45-14.

North Carolina Central will return to O’Kelly-Riddick Stadium this coming Saturday for HBCU football action, as the Eagles welcome Virginia-Lynchburg to Durham, N.C. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. and the game can be seen live on ESPN+.

North Carolina Central dominated Campbell University in a commanding 45-14 victory on Saturday at Barker-Lane Stadium. The Eagles’ relentless offense and suffocating defense helped them improve to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in the MEAC.

The win was the second in a row for NCCU over Campbell.

After a scoreless first quarter, North Carolina Central exploded in the second, scoring 28 points. Quarterback Walker Harris kicked things off with a five-yard touchdown pass to Joaquin Davis, capping a 94-yard drive. The Eagles extended their lead when Darryl Taylor returned a punt 68 yards for another score. Moments later, J’Mari Taylor added a one-yard touchdown run, and just before halftime, Harris found the end zone again with a three-yard rush, putting NCCU ahead 28-0 at the break.

NCCU’s defense stifled Campbell for most of the game, allowing just 178 rushing yards and forcing two turnovers. Campbell’s offense found brief life in the third quarter when VJ Wilkins broke free for a 55-yard touchdown run, but NCCU responded immediately with a 10-yard touchdown pass from Harris to Chauncey Spikes.

In the fourth quarter, the Eagles continued their onslaught, with Chris Mosley breaking free for a 57-yard touchdown run. Campbell’s last gasp came when Mike Chandler II sprinted 72 yards for a touchdown, but it was too little, too late as North Carolina Central’s lead remained insurmountable.

Harris finished the game with 139 passing yards and two touchdowns, while NCCU’s rushing attack piled up 218 yards on the ground. North Carolina Central looks to build on this momentum as it move deeper into its conference schedule.

Recently the North Carolina Central University basketball team surprised its gym custodian with a nice set of gifts, catching her completely off guard. LeVelle Moton, who coaches the Durham, North Carolina HBCU, posted a video to his Instagram account where he and his team were giving flowers to “Sarah” whose last name wasn’t given.

“Sarah is the lead custodian in Athletics and she does an Amazing job in keeping our facilities clean and safe. Our team wanted to surprise her with flowers and a gift card to let her know we appreciate her daily commitment….Everyday, she greets us with a smile to start our day. It was only right that we returned the favor…??? We were raised to give the custodian the same respect you would give to The Richest person on earth….Her tears said it all,” Moton posted to Instagram.

In the video Moton, along with five of his players, delivers a dozen roses and what he described as “lunch money for the next two weeks.”

Sarah was visibly taken aback from the gifts and offered these comments on camera that were translated from Spanish.

“It means a lot to me who appreciate my work and that gives me a lot of joy and I am happy and thank you very much,” Sarah said.

Users on social media reacted to the video with positive comments.

“You had me crying! It is these types of acts of kindness that people remember the most. You are teaching our team so much,” wrote user angievans_realtor.

“Teaching leadership by showing appreciation to those who deserve it but probably receive it least,” wrote user pearlsr4realladies.

NCCU men’s basketball opens up its season on November 4 at George Mason. The Eagles begin MEAC play on January 4 after a 17-game out-of-conference schedule. The highly anticipated HBCU matchup with North Carolina A&T will be played in Greensboro on December 28.

North Carolina Central University (NCCU) delivered a commanding performance in the 2024 Circle City Classic, defeating Norfolk State University (NSU) 37-10 on September 28 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. With the win, the Eagles improved to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in MEAC play, while the Spartans fell to 2-4 and 0-1 in the conference.

NCCU took control early, capitalizing on a strong first half. Quarterback Walker Harris orchestrated an impressive aerial attack, completing 19 of 25 passes for 245 yards and four touchdowns. The Eagles opened the scoring with a 63-yard bomb from Harris to wide receiver Markell Quick, capping a 98-yard drive. Just minutes later, running back J’Mari Taylor broke free for a 30-yard rushing touchdown, extending NCCU’s lead to 14-0 by the end of the first quarter.

The Eagles continued to apply pressure in the second quarter. Kicker Juan Velarde added a 23-yard field goal, and Harris connected with Luke Bracey on a 4-yard touchdown pass just before halftime, pushing NCCU’s lead to 24-3 at the break. Norfolk State’s only first-half points came from a 45-yard field goal by Grandin Willcox.

In the second half, NCCU maintained its dominance. Harris found Quick again for a 15-yard touchdown in the third quarter, and later hit Chance Peterson with a 12-yard touchdown pass in the fourth, bringing the score to 37-3. Norfolk State’s lone touchdown came midway through the fourth quarter, when Jacquez Jones capped off a 95-yard drive with a 14-yard rushing score.

Offensively, the Eagles were unstoppable, racking up 454 total yards, with 266 coming through the air and 188 on the ground. Harris spread the ball efficiently, and Quick led all receivers with five catches for 124 yards and two touchdowns. Taylor also contributed 86 rushing yards and a score.

Defensively, NCCU held Norfolk State to just 85 passing yards and sacked Jalen Daniels twice, while allowing only one red-zone trip all game. The Eagles’ defense, anchored by Jaki Brevard and Malcolm Reed, limited the Spartans to 244 total yards and forced Norfolk into multiple short drives and punts.

With this impressive victory, NCCU strengthened its case as a top contender in the MEAC, while Norfolk State will need to regroup as they look to rebound in conference play.

The 2024 MEAC football season will heat up as North Carolina Central University (NCCU) takes on Norfolk State in its first conference game in Indianapolis at the Circle City Classic. NCCU is the preseason favorite to win the MEAC, while Norfolk State was picked to finish fifth. This game will give both teams a chance to show what they’re made of—and it could shake things up early in the season.

North Carolina Central comes into the game looking strong.NCCU crushed rival North Carolina A&T, 66-24, and its offense was hard to stop. Quarterback Walker Harris has been a key player, throwing for 660 yards and five touchdowns this season. NCCU averages 31.5 points per game, showing why they were picked to win the MEAC.

“We’ve worked hard to stay consistent, and Walker has been leading the way,” said NCCU coach Trei Oliver. “But Norfolk is going to be a tough test. They always come prepared.”

On the other side, Norfolk State is ready to prove people wrong. Though it was picked fifth in the preseason, the Spartans are coming off a 32-10 win over VMI and are hungry for more. Running back Kevon King, who has rushed for 381 yards and 4 touchdowns, will be key for NSU. It will need a strong running game to keep up with NCCU’s high-powered offense.

“We know people don’t expect us to win, but we’re ready to show that we belong,” said Norfolk State coach Dawson Odums. “NCCU is a great team, but we’ve got the players to challenge them.”

HBCU Gameday, FCS, North Carolina Central, NCCU, MEAC
North Carolina Central was picked to win the MEAC.

A big part of this game will be NSU defense against North Carolina Central’s passing game. Harris has been excellent, but Norfolk’s defense has forced seven interceptions this season. It could make all the difference if NSU can get turnovers and slow down NCCU.

“We’ve prepared for this. Turnovers are going to be key, and we need to make Walker Harris uncomfortable,” said Odums.

At the same time, NCCU’s defense has struggled to stop the run, allowing over 215 yards per game. This could be an opening for Norfolk State to run the ball with Kevon King and control the clock. If it can do that, it will have a chance to pull off an upset.

This MEAC matchup between Norfolk and North Carolina Central isn’t just about winning a game—it’s about setting the tone for the rest of the season. For NCCU, it’s a chance to show why it is the top HBCU team in the conference. For Norfolk State, it’s an opportunity to prove the doubters wrong and make a statement.

Will North Carolina Central keep up its dominance, or can Norfolk State rise to the occasion? This game will tell us a lot about what’s to come in MEAC football this year.

The video began with a shot of Dr. Martin sitting in a vehicle on the way to the game being asked if his Aggies would win.

North Carolina Central, HBCU
Dr. Karrie Dixon celebrates on the sidelines during the NC A&T game.

“If there was ever such a thing as winning, then it defined by what we do today at Central,” Martin said smugly. “It’s not a question of winning — it’s a question of how much we’re going to win and how long people will remember it. That’s my answer.”

That clip was followed by a SpongeBob Squarepants graphic that denoted “six-and-a-half hours later.”

A smiling Dr. Dixon appeared inside the press box at O’Kelly-Riddick Stadium.

“You’re definitely right about one thing,” Dixon said as the scoreboard flashed the 66-24 final score. “This is a score you will never forget. Eagle Pride — Amplified.”

It was a cute introduction to the two presidents’ of the largest HBCUs of the five in the UNC System. Dr. Dixon came to her post at NCCU after a stint at Elizabeth City State in which she was known as an avid supporter of the sports programs there. She has clearly brought that enthusiasm with her east as she settles in at North Carolina Central.

Dr. Martin, meanwhile, got an introduction to the intensity of the rivalry.

DURHAM, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University football team got back into the win column in an emphatic way Saturday evening at O’Kelly-Riddick Stadium, upending HBCU football rival North Carolina A&T 66-24 in the Aggie-Eagle Classic.

The Eagles (2-2) snapped a two-game skid and picked up their first home win of 2024.

The Aggies struck on the opening kickoff, when Aaron Harris went the length of the field–100 yards–to give North Carolina A&T a 6-0 lead after a failed PAT.

But NCCU immediately responded, marching 65 yards in eight plays before Walker Harris connected with Joaquin Davis from 14 yards out to give the Eagles a 7-6 lead.

NCAT took a 9-7 lead at the 7:16 mark of the first quarter after Andrew Brown kicked a 27-yard field goal.

That was the Aggies’ last lead of the night.

On the ensuing drive, J’Mari Taylor scampered 66 yards for the touchdown with 5:51 left in the frame, and in the first quarter’s final minute, Harris threw a second touchdown pass–this one a 60-yarder to Markell Quick.

The Eagles led 20-9 after 15 minutes.

Special teams got in on the action early in the second quarter, when Trey Goodridge blocked a punt in the end zone to put the Eagles up 27-9. Taylor added a 5-yard touchdown run at the 7:36 mark to open a 34-9 lead, before the Aggies got another Brown field goal.

Harris added a 2-yard scoring run of his own with 58 seconds left in the half, capping off a 5-play, 75-yard drive to send the Eagles into the locker room with a 40-12 lead.

Harris threw his third touchdown pass of the night, a 6-yarder to Chauncey Spikes, with 5:10 left in the third quarter to give N.C. Central a 46-12 lead. Justin Fomby got the Aggies back on the board with a 3-yard run, before Malcolm Reed got the Eagles defense involved with an 11-yard fumble return at the 1:37 mark of the period.

At that point, NCCU led 53-18.

Javion Martin and Joshua Jones both threw their first career touchdown passes in the second half. Martin’s came at the 1:08 mark of the third quarter, a 46-yarder to Mekhi Wall, and Jones had a 15-yard strike to Aleni Mageo in the final two minutes.

The Eagles will open conference play this coming Saturday, Sept. 28, when they head to Indianapolis, Ind., for the Circle City Classic against Norfolk State. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. ET, and the game will air on ESPNU.

]]>
Both North Carolina A&T and North Carolina Central head coaches attempted to frame their team’s performance for the media on Monday, roughly 36 hours after a 42-point blowout in the HBCU rivalry game.

NCCU coach Trei OIiver said that he wasn’t trying to embarrass his rival in front of a sellout crowd at his home field on Saturday— it’s just the way the game worked out.

“I’ve never been that guy. Okay? But the way this game works is, you know, it’s the third quarter, and they are kicking onside kicks and throwing the ball every play. So they’re the ones extending the game,” Oliver said during the weekly MEAC coaches media call. “All right. So if that’s the case…I had my second and third-team quarterback. They’re true freshman in there. I’ve got to get these guys prepared if they need to start later on in the season.”

Over in Greensboro, NC A&T head coach Vincent Brown explained why he went for onside kicks in the third quarter after starting the second half down 40-12.

HBCU Gameday, North Carolina Central, North Carolina A&T

“I mean, you know, what are we supposed to do, lay down? You know, the last 12, 14 minutes of a game? No,” Brown told the media face-to-face. “We’re trying to build a team that has a competitive mindset, competitive spirit, and sometimes you don’t get a chance to execute those situational kicks. But once during the course of the season — practice — it’s very hard to replicate. So in that situation why not get on tape the things that you might need at some point later in the course of the season.”

The win was the third consecutive for NCCU under Oliver’s leadership — and by far the most definitive result.

“I don’t try to embarrass folks or run the score up, I know some comments made beforehand, but, I think Coach Brown is probably a really good dude,” Oliver said. “I don’t know him. I’ve only been around him a couple times, so I wasn’t trying to embarrass them or the program or nothing like that. But when you’re picking onside kicks in the third quarter, you know, it kind of makes it tough and a game can get out of hand.”

Oliver’s strait-laced delivery and demeanor have made for an increasing amount of entertaining soundbites for HBCU media in recent years. It’s something he’s aware of but is keeping in perspective.

“I’m passionate about what I do, and I’m passionate about my university, so I don’t try to talk trash and whatever the case may be,” Oliver said. “But if somebody comes for me or my university, I’m gonna hold it down, because if I don’t do it, who’s going to do it? So I don’t mean to come out as this villain or this bad guy, but, I’m holding it down for my school and my players. So, I don’t know. I apologize if I offend anybody. I don’t mean to. I just love my players. And I love my university.”

It is clear that this 100-plus year HBCU rivalry remains hot despite no longer being a conference game.

Make no mistake about it — Saturday night’s 66-24 dismantling of archival North Carolina A&T by North Carolina Central was personal for Trei Oliver in an HBCU FCS matchup.

Saturday night, in the bowels of O’Kelly-Riddick Stadium, Oliver recalled his first game against NC A&T as a head coach in Greensboro back in 2019.

“I am definitely pleased to see this,” Oliver said. “My first year here was the worst loss in school history. So for us to come back a couple years later for the most points they’ve ever had scored on ‘em. You know, that kind of rights the ship a little.”

That was a 54-0 loss to North Carolina A&T to close out the 2019 season in what would be its last game as a MEAC member before the HBCU left for the Big South and landed in the CAA. But North Carolina Central has now won three consecutive games over its rival, which fell to 1-3 on the season.

North Carolina Central, HBCU

Oliver was asked why his team continued to throw the ball well into the fourth quarter as third-string quarterback Joshua Jones threw a touchdown pass to Aleni Mageo with less than two minutes to go.

“They should have run the ball. They threw the ball the whole fourth quarter,” Oliver said. “The quarterbacks are running the ball, getting hurt. Run the ball. Get out of here. But they want to play for 60, we can play for 60.”

And Oliver made sure to mention the verbal jab thrown back at him by North Carolina A&T head coach Vincent Brown Sr. last year.

“Coach (Brown) talked last year about a little school down the road, and we’ll never have whatever they have and whatever it takes,” Trei Oliver. “They can take that 66 and take it back to Greensboro.”

In a stunning display of offense and defense, North Carolina Central University (NCCU) overwhelmed North Carolina A&T (NCAT) with a commanding 66-24 victory in their highly anticipated college football matchup. This game marked a major statement for the Eagles as they outpaced their long-time rivals in almost every aspect of play.

First Quarter: A Competitive Start

The game began with a bang as NCAT’s Aaron Harris electrified the crowd with a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown just 13 seconds into the game. However, the Aggies’ missed PAT would leave them with a 6-0 lead. NCCU wasted no time responding, with quarterback Walker Harris connecting with Joaquin Davis for a 14-yard touchdown pass, giving the Eagles a 7-6 advantage after Juan Velarde’s successful PAT.

NCAT managed to retake the lead briefly with a 27-yard field goal from Andrew Brown, making it 9-7. However, NCCU’s J’Mari Taylor exploded for a 66-yard touchdown run on the following possession, putting the Eagles up 14-9. Harris then found Markell Quick for a 60-yard touchdown to extend the lead to 20-9 by the end of the first quarter.

Second Quarter: NCCU Pulls Away

NCCU’s special teams joined the scoring when Trey Goodridge blocked a punt and returned it for a touchdown early in the second quarter. This set the tone for a dominant period. J’Mari Taylor added a 5-yard rushing touchdown, capping a 71-yard drive to make it 34-9. NCAT managed another field goal to cut the deficit to 34-12, but NCCU responded with a 2-yard rushing touchdown by Walker Harris, extending the lead to 40-12 before halftime.

Third Quarter: Eagles Continue to Soar

NCCU’s offensive momentum carried into the third quarter. Harris found Chauncey Spikes for a 6-yard touchdown pass, bringing the score to 46-12. While NCAT’s Justin Fomby punched in a 3-yard rushing touchdown to make it 46-18, NCCU’s defense delivered the next blow. Malcolm Reed recovered a fumble and returned it 11 yards for another Eagles touchdown. The next offensive possession saw backup quarterback Javion Martin connect with Mehki Wall for a 46-yard touchdown strike, pushing the lead to 59-18.

Fourth Quarter: Closing It Out

Though the Aggies scored on a 1-yard rush by Shimique Blizzard early in the fourth quarter, making it 59-24, NCCU’s Joshua Jones capped off the victory with a 15-yard touchdown pass to Aleni Mageo, sealing the game at 66-24.

Quarterback Comparison: NCCU’s Precision vs NCAT’s Struggles

NCCU’s passing game was led by Walker Harris, who completed 15 of 21 passes for 244 yards and 3 touchdowns. Backup quarterbacks Joshua Jones and Javion Martin added to the tally with one touchdown pass each. In total, NCCU quarterbacks threw for 344 yards and five touchdowns, with no interceptions.

On the other side, NCAT struggled with turnovers. Their trio of quarterbacks—Justin Fomby, Braxton Thomas, and Kevin White—combined for 17 completions on 38 attempts, totaling 208 yards but throwing three interceptions.

NCCU’s Rushing Attack

NCCU also dominated on the ground. J’Mari Taylor led the charge with 126 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries, highlighted by his 66-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. The Eagles’ ground game kept the pressure on the Aggies, amassing 147 rushing yards and three touchdowns overall.

NCAT’s Missed Opportunities

Despite showing flashes of brilliance, like Harris’ opening kickoff return, NCAT’s offense struggled with consistency. Their rushing game gained 119 yards on 31 carries, with Shimique Blizzard and Justin Fomby both adding rushing touchdowns. However, their inability to find rhythm in the passing game, coupled with critical turnovers, proved costly.

Defensive and Special Teams Impact

NCCU’s defense shined, forcing three interceptions—one each from Mekhi Bigelow, Jaylen Bowden, and Cameron Williams. In addition, their special teams unit blocked a punt for a touchdown and recovered a fumble for another score. NCAT’s defense couldn’t contain NCCU’s explosive plays, as the Eagles averaged 12.7 yards per pass attempt.

Conclusion

North Carolina Central’s 66-24 win over North Carolina A&T showcased their dominance on both sides of the ball, particularly with their efficient passing attack and opportunistic defense. This decisive victory will bolster NCCU’s standing in the rivalry and in their overall season, while NCAT will look to regroup after a tough loss filled with missed opportunities.

It’s been nearly a year since the coach from rival coaches from HBCU programs North Carolina A&T and North Carolina Central had a war of words — and it hasn’t been forgotten.

Following last season’s 30-16 win over NC A&T, NCCU head coach Trei Oliver talked about the crowd at the rivalry game between the two HBCU programs in Greensboro compared to what it would look like against CAA opponents.

“With what you saw Saturday night in that stadium, they’re not going to have crowds like that except for homecoming, you know,” Oliver said. “So if you want to come play in a type of environment like that, if you want to come play in classics, the Circle City, the Magic City, whatever the case may be, the SWAC and the MEAC are where you need to be – they not going to be doing all that in the CAA.”

That prompted a response from Brown via Twitter.

“The little school up the road will never be able to match what A&T has achieved or offers, “Brown tweeted, including photos of championship trophies. “We are the best for a reason. Aggie Pride.”

NC Central head coach Trei Oliver was recently asked about the verbal jab thrown at his program last September by North Carolina A&T head coach Vincent Brown.

“His account had to have been hacked. Because there is no way a head coach would get out there after getting beat by their rival,” Oliver told reporters during NCCU’s weekly media call. “I find that hard to believe because I don’t think that he would be doing that in the CAA. Sending that to Richmond and those other schools in those conferences. So I don’t know if he wants to come to black colleges to try throw shade.”

Oliver found irony in the statement due to his personal involvement with the success that Brown — who succeeded Oliver’s mentor Sam Washington — pointed to as a differentiator between the programs. Oliver was an outside linebackers coach at NC A&T under Rod Broadway from 2011 through 2015, helping the team to win a pair of MEAC titles (2014-2015) and the inaugural Celebration Bowl.

“It’s ironic because, like two of those trophies — I was a part of winning those championships. If you look closely, I might be in some of those pictures,” Oliver said. “And half the staff was from (North Carolina) Central anyway.”

The two HBCU programs are set to match up on Saturday in Durham at 7:00 PM at O’Kelly-Riddick Stadium.

The 102nd Aggie Eagle Classic is going down this Saturday in Durham, North Carolina. This is the first time the HBCU football rivals have matched up in Durham since 2018. North Carolina Central University (NCCU) versus North Carolina A&T is one of, if not the biggest rivalry in HBCU Sports, especially in football. The 2024 edition of the Classic is sure to be exciting this year with all of the new faces for both schools this season.

North Carolina Central is looking to continue its two-game win streak over the Aggies, but this year they’ll have to do it with a new quarterback in the command of the offense. Walker Harris is the new starting quarterback for the NCCU Eagles and has the team sitting currently at a 1-2 record. Harris was injured during the Eagles matchup against UNC and has been listed as day-to-day by NCCU HC Trei Oliver.

The Eagles’ two losses have come from an FCS-ranked Elon team of the CAA Conference and the UNC Tar Heels of the ACC. NCCU football’s only win came against Alabama State in the Orange Blossom Classic, the team picked in the preseason to win the SWAC in 2024.

The Aggies are looking to come into O’Kelly-Reddick Stadium and end its current losing streak to the Eagles. This is the first matchup at O’Kelly-Reddick stadium in Durham, NC since 2018, where the Aggies put up a dominating 45-0 win.

The Aggies and Eagles have both faced ACC opponents in their 2024 nonconference schedule, with both schools having promising takeaways from their matchups with big-time FBS schools. North Carolina A&T took a trip to Wake Forest for its season opener and showed glimpses of what their offense can be. The Aggies showed up to Winston-Salem with a solid run game and moved the line of scrimmage up front, creating holes for their talented backfield of Kenji Christian and Wesley Graves. The North Carolina A&T defense also showed signs of being able to stop the run game while making plays on the ball in the air as well.

The Eagles took on a different ACC opponent, the UNC Tar Heels, taking a trip to Chapel Hill, NC, and giving UNC all it could handle for three quarters. The Eagles and their new starting quarterback Walker Harris came out early and proved they could move the ball through the air. While also moving the chains with the run game and scoring a touchdown on the ground on the first possession of the game, playing the Tar Heels close until the 6-minute mark in the 4th quarter. The Eagles had only allowed 17 points in a one-possession game with 3 minutes left in the 3rd when UNC was able to figure out the NCCU schemes on offense and started firing under all cylinders, scoring 28 points in the fourth quarter.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University football team held tough for three quarters Saturday evening at Kenan Stadium, but the UNC Tar Heels of the ACC pulled away late to a 45-10 win.

N.C. Central dropped to 1-2 on the year, while the Tar Heels improved to 3-0.

The Eagles took the opening drive 75 yards down the field and cashed in with a 5-yard touchdown run by J’Mari Taylor to take an early 7-0 lead over the Tar Heels.

Carolina tied the game in the second quarter on an 11-yard run by Omarion Hampton. North Carolina then took a 14-7 lead when Hampton recorded his second touchdown of the game on a 2-yard run with 10:06 left in the half.

Liam Boyd nailed a 36-yard field goal at the 5:51 mark to extend the lead to 17-7.

Juan Velarde would make a 35-yard field goal as time expired in the first half to cut the Tar Heels’ lead to 17-10 at the break.

After a scoreless third quarter, which featured some tough Eagles defense, the Tar Heels were able to get on the board four times in the fourth quarter. Quarterback Jacolby Criswell got the scoring started in the frame, when he connected with tight end John Copehhaver for a 23-yard touchdown to give Carolina a 24-10 lead with 14:12 left.

Hampton then scored his third touchdown of the game at the 10:42 mark, capping a 5-play, 30-yard drive with a 4-yard score to put the Tar Heels up 31-10.

Davion Gause and Charleston French both had rushing touchdowns of their own in the final six minutes to push the game to its final margin.

The Tar Heels had 513 total offensive yards for the game, including 330 on the ground.

The Eagles will return home on Saturday for the Aggie-Eagle Classic, squaring off against HBCU football rival North Carolina A&T at O’Kelly-Riddick Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m., and the game will air live on ESPNU.

An HBCU student says she was the target of curses and racial slurs at the recent North Carolina Central – Elon game.

Samihya Love, a freshman at NC Central, claims that linebacker Marco Patierno used slurs against her during the game between NCCU and Elon.

Elon Associate Athletics Director of Strategic Communications Jason Knavel wrote an email to Elon News stating that the school was aware of the accusations and investigating them.

“We are aware of the allegations about comments made during Elon’s recent football game. We are looking into this incident and any substantiated allegations will be addressed appropriately by the university,” Knavel wrote. “Elon University is a community based on a strong commitment to inclusivity and belonging, and intolerant behavior and comments have no place here.”

The 18-year-old said Saturday was her first game at North Carolina Central, and she was disturbed that this was her experience at her HBCU.

“A lot of people are saying in my comments and stuff that this had to be provoked by me, or something like that, which I just find outlandish, that it always has to be the angry Black woman narrative,” Love said. “Why can’t y’all just believe that I was there enjoying the game, and one of y’all’s players got upset to the point where he spout racial slurs at me?”

Patierno is from Wake Forest, NC. He was named to the Jerry Rice Award watch list as a freshman last season.

Buffalo Bills defensive back and kick returner Brandon Codrington is making an early impact after a 53-yard return on his first kick return. The former North Carolina Central University (NCCU) standout and HBCU star is showing why he could be a valuable player for the Bills, especially with the NFL’s new kickoff rule in effect.

The updated NFL kickoff rule, aimed at increasing kick returns, allows returners to fair catch the ball inside the 25-yard line and start at the 25. The intent is to create more opportunities for dynamic plays on returns, giving players like Codrington the chance to shine. His speed and ability to find lanes—skills he developed during his time at NCCU—make him a dangerous returner who knows when to go for the big play.

During his college career at NCCU, Codrington was a force on special teams, earning All-MEAC honors for his explosive returns. His 53-yard return for the Buffalo Bills in week 1 of the NFL season shows that he can still deliver game-changing plays, just like he did at NCCU, where he was one of the top HBCU talents.

With the NFL now focused on increasing kick returns, Codrington’s decision-making and athleticism could make him a key weapon for the Bills. His ability to flip the field with one return could give the Bills a crucial edge in field position, which can swing any game’s momentum.

As the NFL kickoff rule continues to evolve, Codrington has the chance to capitalize on more return opportunities, showing that HBCU talent can thrive in the league and make a real impact on the game.

North Carolina Central University (NCCU) secured a win against Alabama State in the unofficial second MEAC/SWAC Challenge, as the Eagles and Hornets met at Orange Blossom Classic, in Miami Gardens, FL but the restored HBCU football Classic wasn’t without controversy for NCCU, even in victory. Head coach Trei Oliver expressed his frustration over an incident where he says an Alabama State player spat in the face of an NCCU player.

Trei Oliver was seen being held back from storming the field at one point during the Orange Blossom Classic and he still felt a way about it on Monday when asked what happened by Lut Williams of the Black College Sports Page.

“The kid spit in my kid’s face, and the refs don’t do anything about it,” Oliver said in frustration during the weekly MEAC coaches call. “They were quick to get on me when one of my guys used profanity, but come on, man. We don’t want our guys to use language like that, but come on man.” Oliver continued to emphasize his perceived disparity in how the game was called. “I mean come on he spit in my kid’s face and the refs don’t throw a flag… And then, you know, yeah, a lot of stuff happened throughout the game, you know, they muffed a kick off on the hash, the ball hits the returner, it goes out of bounds on the four-yard line, they tried to say we kicked the ball out of bounds. Then they make me have to replay it.”

Despite the officiating issues, Oliver was still pleased with his team’s performance in the HBCU Classic, though he noted they need to improve on tackling and maintaining leads “We didn’t tackle well at all,” Oliver admitted. “I thought we could have put the game away a lot earlier.”

The 2024 Orange Blossom Classic, a recently restored HBCU classic, was a good football game.

North Carolina Central and Alabama State played a football game down to the wire. It had the drama of two HBCU contenders playing in an NFL stadium amid bad weather.

Sunday’s game at Hard Rock Cafe Stadium in Miami Stadium had a listed attendance of 10,256 fans.

That number was a far cry from the last three editions of the HBCU classic, which was reborn in 2021. Those three matchups featured Florida A&M taking on new SWAC rival Jackson State. The 2022 matchup, a 59-3 blowout in favor of Jackson State, had an attendance of 39,907. The 2023 OBC saw 24,967 fans as FAMU ended the three-game losing streak to Jackson State.

In fact, Sunday’s number was the lowest reported by the OBC since 1946 when 9,000 fans saw Lincoln (PA) beat FAMU in Tampa, FL.

The Orange Blossom Classic, established in 1933, became a symbol of Black college football excellence. Originally hosted by Florida A&M University, the game was held continuously from 1947 to 1978 at Miami’s Orange Bowl Stadium. Under legendary coach Alonzo “Jake” Gaither, it served as a de facto Black college national championship, drawing crowds of up to 50,000 during its peak.

The game was shelved following the 1978 season until it was revived by Kendra Bullock-Major, who partnered with Dennys as the game’s title sponsor.

With the three-year deal between FAMU and Jackson State expiring and the series set to move back to a home-and-home format, the Orange Blossom Classic was forced to find new schools to keep the game alive. North Carolina Central and Alabama State, two HBCU football programs on the rise but with less historical fan bases, were booked for the 2024 game.

“We’re moving forward. The Orange Blossom Classic is here to stay, and we’re excited about what the future holds”….” Bullock-Major told HBCU Legends back in 2023. “There will be schools they’re going to be pleased with. Schools that we know travel well and have a good following. I believe we’ll be good.”

have not been announced. Back in 2023, Bullock said she’s not opposed to having FAMU back in the game at some point.

“There’s always a possibility. I don’t think the door is closed. I think it all comes down to their administration and their initiatives and goals.”

NFL defensive back Jalen Ramsey took time out of his busy schedule to address the North Carolina Central University (NCCU) football team ahead of their 2024 season opener against Alabama State. Speaking to a room full of eager players, Ramsey, known for his dynamic play and leadership in the NFL, shared valuable insights that resonated deeply with the HBCU athletes.

The speech was facilitated by former North Carolina Central quarterback Micah Zanders, a former NC Central quarterback turned pro agent.

Ramsey’s first piece of advice emphasized the importance of embracing one’s role on the team. “Whatever your role is, just attack it,” he urged. Whether on special teams or in a starting position, he reminded the players that every role is vital to the team’s success. His message was clear: each player must own their responsibility and perform it with intensity, no matter how big or small it may seem.

Secondly, Ramsey highlighted the significance of trust within the team. He spoke about the necessity of trusting one’s teammates, preparation, and the coaching staff. “Football is the ultimate team game,” Ramsey said, stressing that success on the field depends on everyone working together seamlessly. Trusting in the team’s preparation and execution is crucial, especially in high-pressure situations.

Lastly, Jalen Ramsey encouraged the players to adopt a dominant mindset. He advised them to approach each game with the mentality of overpowering their opponents. “Our mindset is to dominate every play,” Ramsey declared, urging the team to unleash their full potential from the first whistle. This mindset, according to Ramsey, is what separates champions from the rest.

The NFL star’s powerful words left a lasting impression on the NCCU team as they prepared for the upcoming season. His advice not only reinforced the values essential for success in football but also inspired the players to uphold the rich tradition of excellence at their HBCU.

NCCU went on to win its opener, defeating Alabama State on Sunday night.

This highly anticipated HBCU clash featured standout performances and intense moments that kept fans on the edge of their seats.

N.C. Central set the tone early, with J’Mari Taylor rushing for a 1-yard touchdown to put the Eagles ahead. Taylor dominated the game with 128 rushing yards and two touchdowns, underscoring his critical role in N.C. Central’s offense. The Eagles’ defense also shone, with Kole Jones returning an interception for a 31-yard touchdown, extending their lead to 21-0.

NC Central
J’Mari Taylor and Walker Harris carried the load offensively for North Carolina Central as it started the season 1-0 for the fourth consecutive year.

Alabama State fought back, fueled by an electrifying 82-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by A.J. Gates. Quarterback Andrew Body added two rushing touchdowns, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the deficit. Despite Alabama State’s efforts, N.C. Central held their ground, with a key 14-yard touchdown pass from Walker Harris to Taylor in the fourth quarter sealing the victory.

This HBCU rivalry showcased the talent and competitiveness within the HBCU football landscape, drawing attention to the skill and passion of these programs. As the season progresses, both teams will look to build on the lessons learned in this closely contested game, with N.C. Central starting its season on a high note and Alabama State eager to bounce back.

The 2024 Orange Blossom Classic features a break from the usual Jackson State vs Florida A&M matchup. This year’s energy is focused more on the SWAC/MEAC rivalry that is showcased normally in week zero and the Celebration Bowl. In 2024 we have an intriguing matchup between two formidable programs, Alabama State University and North Carolina Central University. Both teams are eager to kick off the season with a statement win in Miami Gardens, Florida, and this showdown provides a high-profile stage for them to demonstrate their collective strengths.

Alabama State, led by head coach Eddie Robinson Jr., is coming off a competitive season where they battled in the SWAC. This game against North Carolina Central, one season removed from a Celebration Bowl victory, is a crucial early test for the Hornets. Robinson embraces the challenge, knowing that a strong HBCU rival like NCCU will reveal much about his team.

“It’s always good when you start off the season playing a good team,” Robinson stated. “They’re picked to finish first in the MEAC, and that means they’re going to expose some of our weaknesses. They’ll show guys we thought could do it, and maybe they can’t. That’s what you want–so you get that out the way early.”

MEAC/SWAC Challenge energy

The MEAC/SWAC rivalry adds another layer to this matchup. The two conferences square off each year in the Celebration Bowl, making this early-season clash a significant litmus test for the caliber of both leagues. Robinson pointed to the recent success of the SWAC in the MEAC/SWAC Challenge, noting that it was the third straight win for his conference.

“We know the conferences are always playing the Celebration Bowl at the end of the year,” Robinson said. “I think it’s going to be a SWAC versus MEAC deal. Trei Oliver is big on representing the MEAC, and of course, I’m huge on representing the SWAC.”

On the other side, North Carolina Central enters the Orange Blossom Classic with high expectations. Head coach Trei Oliver led the Eagles to a 10-2 record in 2023, but missed a shot at the HBCU National Championship after two key losses late in the season. Oliver doesn’t put too much focus on early season wins, no matter how big, he instead remains focused on the rigorous path ahead.

HBCU Championship depends on how you finish

“You’ve got to go undefeated in conference,” Oliver emphasized when discussing NCCU’s mindset. “We had a tough non-conference schedule, and we beat a lot of really good non-conference teams. Beat a top-25 ranked Elon team. We beat a rival at their place, North Carolina A&T. We were battle-tested.”

Oliver is confident that the returning talent on his squad, along with their experience in high-pressure games, will help them rise to the challenge. Though there may be doubters after any setback, Oliver believes that NCCU is still one of the top programs in the country.

“We’re excited about the opportunity to return a lot of guys,” Oliver said. “We’re still a good football program. I know we got some doubters out there now that we lost a game, but we’ll be back.”

As the Orange Blossom Classic approaches, both teams are poised to make a statement. For Alabama State, it’s a chance to prove themselves against one of the best in HBCU football. For North Carolina Central, it’s another opportunity to remind everyone that the Eagles are a championship program. All eyes will be on Miami Gardens to see which team seizes the moment and starts their season on the right foot.

Former HBCU All-American DB out of North Carolina Central University, (NCCU) Brandon Codrington is on the move on the final day of cuts in the NFL, but he hasn’t been waived or released, the undrafted free agent from Raleigh, NC was traded to a team within the same division. Codrington earned a contract with the New York Jets following the team’s rookie minicamp and made a name for himself in the preseason with a handful of big returns on special teams.

The cornerback amassed 109 return yards in the Jets opening preseason game against the Carolina Panthers, including a 69-yard kick return that had head coach Robert Saleh talking about him in the post-game media session.

“Definitely seized his opportunities. I think he’s – for both (punt and kick return) teams – the most productive. Set up a couple of scoring drives…but that’s what he’s here for,” Saleh said after the game. “That’s why we brought him in – his punt return and kick return ability – and I thought he did a really nice job today.”

Reports of Codrington being traded from the New York Jets to the Buffalo Bills surfaced about 30 minutes before the 4 pm final roster cutdown deadline. NBC Sports reports that the teams will exchange late-round picks in 2026 to complete the deal.

Buffalo Rumblings reports that “In terms of trade value, it’s a fairly inconsequential move for the Bills to surrender to a swap of late-round draft picks in the 2026 NFL Draft. It’s likely the parameters are such that One Bills Drive will have to give up the better draft pick to the Jets – meaning that if they finish with a better record, they’d exchange an earlier-round choice for one of the Jets’ picks in a later round.”

Brandon Codrington was an HBCU all-American kick return specialist at North Carolina Central where he accumulated 2,000 all-purpose yards and 4 touchdowns during his time as an Eagle. As a Junior, he contributed 2 solo tackles in NCCU’s HBCU National Championship win in the Celebration Bowl win over Jackson State.

The New York Jets got a standout performance from Brandon Codrington, a former HBCU football star looking to make its 53-man roster.

The former North Carolina Central standout had big returns on punt and kick returns in Saturday’s New York Jets game against the Carolina Panthers. The cornerback had a combined 109 return yards in the game, including a 69-yard kick return.

Head coach Robert Saleh was definitely aware of his impact.

Brandon Codrington had a standout career at North Carolina Central University, where he was a key player in its football program that won the HBCU national title in 2022. Starting as a freshman in 2019, Codrington quickly made his mark as a third-team All-MEAC selection. By 2021, he was named to the All-MEAC First Team, leading the conference with a 15.0-yard punt return average. In his senior season, he returned two punts for touchdowns, including an 81-yard return against Winston-Salem State.

Codrington was signed by the New York Jets as a free agent following the 2024 NFL Draft.
