The NFL career of Javon Hargrave, one of the best talents produced in HBCU football in recent decades, is at a crossroads.

Hargave was released by the San Francisco 49ers last week after spending a pair of seasons in San Francisco. Hargrave’s name has been floated as a possibility for many NFL squads, including the Jacksonville Jaguars, Minnesota Vikings, Washington Commanders and Dallas Cowboys.

Javon Hargrave, a native of Salisbury, North Carolina, distinguished himself as a talented defensive lineman during his time at South Carolina State University (SCSU) from 2012 to 2015. Starting all 47 games, he amassed impressive statistics: 200 tackles, 62 tackles for loss, and 37 sacks. His junior year was particularly notable, leading the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) and ranking third nationally in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) with 16 sacks. This impressive performance earned him consecutive MEAC Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2014 and 2015.

Javon Hargrave’s collegiate achievements paved the way for his selection in the third round of the 2016 NFL Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he played for four seasons. In March 2020, he signed a three-year, $39 million contract with the Philadelphia Eagles. His impact was immediate; during the 2022 season, he recorded a career-best 11 sacks, contributing significantly to the Eagles’ defense and their journey to Super Bowl LVII.

In recognition of his outstanding contributions, Hargrave was inducted into the South Carolina State Athletic Hall of Fame in 2022. Further cementing his legacy, he was announced as a member of the 2024 MEAC Hall of Fame class, underscoring his significant impact both at the HBCU football level as well as the NFL.

Now as he looks to finish out his pro career, the former HBCU star should have plenty of options.

ORANGEBURG, S.C. – South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster joined South Carolina State University President Alexander Conyers on Tuesday in announcing that the Orangeburg, SC HBCU has achieved Research 2 (R2) status in the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education.

“This is a defining moment in our university’s history, one that reflects our steadfast commitment to academic excellence, innovation and impactful research,” Conyers said in the announcement at the university’s Fine Arts Building. “Achieving R2 status is no small feat. In fact, we are one of only 139 institutions from more than 3,000 colleges and universities across the country who were evaluated for this designation.

“This is a testament to the dedication of our faculty, the hard work of our students and the unwavering support of our alumni, staff and community partners,” he said. “This designation places South Carolina State among the nation’s top-tiered research institutions, expanding our opportunities for federal funding, partnerships and groundbreaking discoveries that will benefit not only our university, but the entire state of South Carolina and beyond.”

The R2 status signifies a university with “high research activity,” meaning it spends at least $5 million on research and awards at least 20 research doctorates annually. The HBCU exceeded both criteria in 2023, devoting $7.8 million to research and awarding 25 doctoral degrees.

McMaster congratulated the university on achieving the milestone with a pledge to “keep this going.” “This institution is superior in many, many different ways at many different levels,” McMaster said in the announcement SC State’s Fine Arts Building. “As long as we work together – if we communicate, collaborate and cooperate — there is no end to what we can do.”

SC State is now the state’s fourth top-tier research university, joining Clemson University, the University of South Carolina and the Medical University of South Carolina, all of which are Research 1 institutions. The R2 designation will allow SC State to compete for even more federal and private research funding.

HBCU R2 South Carolina State University

In addition to the university’s faculty scientists and researchers, both graduate and undergraduate students at SC State conduct research alongside faculty mentors.

“SC State University has long been committed to research excellence, investing in resources and expanding our capacity to drive innovation and discovery,” said Dr. Louis Whitesides, vice president for the university’s Public Service and Agriculture division and vice president for research. “Achieving R2 designation is a significant milestone, but it is also a reflection of what we have always known — our research enterprise is impactful and essential to advancing knowledge and solutions that benefit South Carolina, the nation and the world.

“This recognition affirms the dedication of our faculty, students and staff who continuously push the boundaries, and it strengthens our resolve to further elevate SC State’s land-grant mission of improving quality of life through research, education and public service,” Whitesides said.

Dr. Frederick Evans, SC State’s provost and vice president for academic affairs, described the occasion as celebrating a new chapter in the ongoing journey of innovation, excellence and community at the HBCU.

“We are committed to fostering an environment of growth, collaborations and empowerment for all who are part of our vibrant university community,” Evans said. “That’s all citizens in the state of South Carolina and the nation.”

CARROLLTON, Ga. – After promoting his offensive line coach to offensive coordinator, University of West Georgia head football coach Joel Taylor has announced the hiring of Na’Shan Goddard as the Wolves’ new offensive line coach. Goddard, an NFL veteran and experienced collegiate coach, comes to Carrollton by way of HBCU South Carolina State.

“I’ve known Na’Shan for years and I’m happy to finally get a chance to work with him. He brings an abundance of experience and championships, winning two Super Bowls at the professional level,” said Taylor. “He is a tremendous relationship builder and coach and UWG is proud to have him and his family join ours.”

After seven years at South Carolina State, Goddard is thrilled to join the Wolves’ staff to continue the transition to Division I and the FCS.

“I’m excited for this opportunity here at West Georgia, and I’m thankful for the opportunity to continue to mold young men on and off the field,” said Goddard.

HBCU NFL West Georgia South Carolina State

At SCSU, Goddard was a part of three Mid-Eastern Athletic (MEAC) titles and a 2021 Cricket Wireless Celebration Bowl Championship where the Bulldogs were crowned HBCU National Champions. In 2023, the offensive line was ranked fifth (5th) in FCS National rankings in rushing average of 220 yards per game, with over 2600 rushing yards for the season. Last season, the Bulldogs won the MEAC title and advanced to the Cricket Wireless Celebration Bowl and had three HBCU BOXTOROW All-Americans, and four First Team All-Conference selections on the offensive line with the Offensive Lineman of the Year, Nick Taiste.

Prior to joining the Bulldogs, Goddard was with Newberry for two seasons. His first season was marked by the Wolves’ third SAC championship in program history and a berth in the NCAA Division II Football Championship. Goddard’s unit was instrumental to the team establishing new school records for scoring (436 points), passing yards (3,536), completions (287), passing touchdowns (30), completion percentage (67.8), total offense (5,462 yards), all-purpose yards (6,496), and total touchdowns (61).

Goddard’s unit followed up that exceptional season with another strong showing in 2017, led by senior center, and All-Super Region selection, Dakota Mozingo. He was also named the SAC Scholar-Athlete, given to the top-performing student-athlete in the conference in academics, athletics, and community service and leadership.

A native of Dayton, Ohio, Goddard began his NFL career as an undrafted free agent with the New York Giants. He was there for three years, then had a brief stint with the New York Jets before being traded back to the Giants. He later played with Seattle and closed out his NFL career with the New Orleans Saints. He earned Super Bowl rings with the Giants in 2008 and the Saints in 2010.

Goddard also played professionally with the Calgary Stampeders in the Canadian Football League and the Florida Tuskers and Virginia Destroyers of the United Football League. He retired from pro football following the 2014 CFL season and is married to Stacy. The couple has two sons, NaSean and Naiden.

Na’Shan Goddard, a Super Bowl winner and key figure in South Carolina State’s offensive success, is taking his championship experience from the HBCU ranks to a new Division I FCS school.

A two-time Super Bowl champion with the New York Giants and New Orleans Saints, Goddard spent the past eight seasons at S.C. State, helping the Bulldogs capture multiple Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) titles and the 2021 HBCU National Championship.

Goddard’s impact at S.C. State was undeniable. As the Bulldogs’ offensive line coach and NFL Pro-Liaison, he helped mold one of the top rushing attacks in FCS. In 2023, his unit ranked fifth nationally, averaging 220 rushing yards per game and eclipsing 2,600 yards for the season. Under his leadership, S.C. State claimed another MEAC title in 2024, finishing as runner-up in the Celebration Bowl against Jackson State. His ability to develop linemen into dominant forces in HBCU football made him one of the most respected coaches at the position.

HBCU, Goddard
Goddard has been a constant at South Carolina State.

Prior to his time at S.C. State, Goddard coached at Newberry College, where his offensive lines helped set multiple school records, including scoring, passing yards, and total offense. His ability to build strong, disciplined units was evident throughout his tenure.

A former standout at South Carolina under legendary coaches Lou Holtz and Steve Spurrier, Goddard’s playing career took him from the SEC to the NFL, where he earned two Super Bowl rings. His experience at the highest levels of the game will now benefit West Georgia as it continues its transition into the Division I ranks.

Goddard’s departure is a loss for the HBCU runner-up, but his influence on the game continues to grow. His championship mindset, both at the HBCU and professional levels, will undoubtedly shape West Georgia’s offensive line for years to come.

The LA Rams took care of business in the NFC Wildcard round of the NFL playoffs, and an HBCU product was a big reason why.

Former South Carolina State star Cobie Durant came up big in his team’s 27-9 win over the Minnesota Vikings, and made some history.

Cobie Durant not only came up with an interception, he also recorded a sack. He was just the third player for the LA Rams to do so in franchise history, and was the first defensive back to record a sack in the postseason in franchise history.

Durant is now in his fourth season with the LA Rams. He recorded 33 solo tackles and one interception during the 2024 regular season.

At SC State, Durant was a dominant force in the secondary, known for his elite ball-hawking skills and lockdown coverage. Over his collegiate career, he earned multiple accolades, including being named the MEAC Defensive Player of the Year in 2021. Durant’s performance against top-tier competition, including a memorable game against Clemson where he intercepted two passes, solidified his reputation as one of the best defensive backs in HBCU football.

Durant was drafted in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft by the Los Angeles Rams. Transitioning seamlessly to the professional level, he has showcased his speed, instincts, and playmaking ability, contributing significantly to the Rams’ defense.

The LA Rams will take on the Philadelphia Eagles in the Divisional round of the NFL playoffs.

South Carolina State University, a cornerstone program in HBCU football, has turned to transfer quarterback Amari Jones to guide them into a new era. After finishing as runners-up in the 2024 Celebration Bowl, the Bulldogs are rebuilding their roster with hopes of returning to the top of the HBCU football world. Jones, a 6’3”, 225-pound redshirt junior, is expected to step into the leadership role left vacant by the departure of standout quarterback Eric Phoenix.

Jones joins South Carolina State after transferring from FIU, where he spent two seasons without seeing game action. While his collegiate experience has been limited, his high school career at Bradford High School in Starke, Florida, highlighted his potential. As a senior, Jones threw for 2,287 yards and 19 touchdowns while rushing for 371 yards and seven scores. His standout season earned him Florida 1A Player of the Year honors, along with school records for single-season and single-game passing yards.

The Bulldogs, under the guidance of Head Coach Chinnis Berry, remain focused on returning to the Celebration Bowl and reclaiming their championship status. As Jones takes on this challenge, he has the chance to cement his place in South Carolina State University’s storied history. Fans across the HBCU football community will be watching closely to see if Jones can rise to the occasion and lead the Bulldogs back to glory.

South Carolina State University, a powerhouse in HBCU football, has unveiled its 2025 schedule following a stellar 2024 season under first-year head coach Chennis Berry. The Bulldogs, reigning MEAC champions and HBCU national runners-up, are looking to build on their impressive 9-3 record. The 2025 slate promises challenges and opportunities as SC State sets its sights on another historic season in the world of HBCU athletics.

The Bulldogs will kick off their 2025 campaign at home on August 30 against Wofford, setting the stage for a mix of non-conference battles and pivotal MEAC clashes. A September 6 matchup at the University of South Carolina highlights the team’s early-season schedule, offering a chance to compete against an FBS opponent. On September 13, SC State returns home to face Bethune-Cookman, a historic HBCU rival, before hitting the road for another tough test against the University of South Florida on September 20.

Closing out September, SC State will travel to Charleston Southern on September 27. These non-conference matchups provide the Bulldogs an opportunity to sharpen their skills and bolster their national profile before diving into MEAC play.

The Bulldogs’ annual Homecoming game will take place on October 4 against Savannah State, a celebration that draws fans and alumni from across the HBCU landscape. This game is set to be a highlight of the season, showcasing SC State’s rich traditions and football dominance.

Following Homecoming, SC State faces a string of MEAC opponents, including a road game against fierce rival North Carolina A&T on October 11. These contests will be critical as SC State looks to defend its MEAC crown and secure its place in the HBCU national championship discussion.

The season wraps up with two tough road games: a November 15 showdown with North Carolina Central and a November 22 finale at Delaware State. Both games will test the Bulldogs as they aim to finish the regular season strong and position themselves for postseason glory.

With the leadership of Coach Chennis Berry and the program’s deep-rooted HBCU traditions, South Carolina State is poised for another electrifying season. The Bulldogs’ 2025 schedule is not just a roadmap but a challenge to solidify their status among HBCU football elites.

Jackson State University etched its name in HBCU football history with a commanding 21-point victory over South Carolina State in the 2024 Celebration Bowl. This triumph not only secured Jackson State’s first Celebration Bowl title but also tied the largest margin of victory in the game’s history. The 21-7 win was a moment of redemption for the Tigers, who lost to the Bulldogs in the 2021 matchup by the same margin.

The SWAC champions, led by quarterback Jacobian Morgan, showcased their offensive and defensive prowess. While the first quarter remained scoreless, Jackson State struck in the second quarter, scoring 14 points to take control of the game. Morgan was efficient under center, throwing for 219 yards and one touchdown, with wide receiver Joanes Fortilien hauling in a 4-yard scoring pass to open the Tigers’ account.

Dominance from Start to Finish

On the ground, running back Irv Mulligan delivered a standout performance with 71 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Jackson State outgained South Carolina State 367 yards to 135, including a staggering 148-16 advantage in rushing yards. The Tigers’ dominance in the trenches set the tone for the game.

A Relentless Defense

Jackson State’s defense was the backbone of their success, holding the MEAC champion Bulldogs to a mere 16 rushing yards on 18 attempts. Defensive standout A. Petty recorded a pivotal interception, while A. Taylor added a crucial sack as the Tigers repeatedly stifled South Carolina State’s offense. The Bulldogs, led by quarterback Eric Phoenix, struggled to find consistency, converting just one of 10 third-down attempts.

The defense also forced five three-and-outs and consistently pressured the Bulldogs’ offensive line, showcasing why Jackson State has become a force in HBCU football.

A Balanced Legacy

Jackson State’s Celebration Bowl victory is a defining moment for HBCU football, highlighting the program’s growth and determination. The Tigers’ ability to avenge their 2021 loss to South Carolina State demonstrates their evolution into a powerhouse program.

However, the game also underscores the competitive spirit of HBCU football, with South Carolina State continuing to represent the MEAC with pride. While the Tigers celebrate this historic win, both programs have elevated the profile of HBCU athletics, proving that the Celebration Bowl remains a premier showcase for Black college football on the national stage.

Here are five things you should know.

The post HBCU Sports Betting Guide: Celebration Bowl 2024 appeared first on HBCU Gameday.

]]>
If you’re looking to bet on the highly anticipated Celebration Bowl featuring HBCU powerhouses Jackson State and South Carolina State, here are some tips to make informed decisions for this championship showdown that will determine the top team in HBCU football.

1. Evaluate Jackson State’s HBCU-Leading Defense

 • Why It Matters: Jackson State boasts one of the strongest defenses in HBCU football, allowing just 17.9 points per game and recording 34 sacks this season. It’s aggressive pass rush and secondary, which has 13 interceptions, could make it tough for South Carolina State’s passing attack.
 • Betting Tip: Consider betting on Jackson State against the spread (ATS), especially if they are modest favorites. A wager on the under may also hold value, given Jackson State’s ability to keep opponents’ scoring low.

2. Assess South Carolina State’s Explosive HBCU Offense

 • Why It Matters: South Carolina State averages an impressive 35.4 points per game, powered by quarterback Eric Phoenix and wide receiver Caden High. It’s red-zone efficiency and big-play ability make them one of the most potent offenses in HBCU and FCS football.
 • Betting Tip: If the over/under total is reasonable, betting the over might be a smart move, especially if you expect South Carolina State to challenge Jackson State’s defense with their high-scoring offense.

3. Turnovers Could Be Key in This HBCU Matchup

 • Why It Matters: Turnovers often determine the outcome in tightly contested HBCU games. Jackson State has an edge in turnover differential, with a disciplined offense and a defense that thrives on forcing mistakes. South Carolina State, while strong, has shown vulnerability in giveaways at times.
 • Betting Tip: Consider live bets on turnovers or even a defensive touchdown, as both teams are capable of game-changing plays in this HBCU classic.

4. Monitor the Running Game Battle

 • Why It Matters: The ground game will be critical in this HBCU showdown. Jackson State’s Irv Mulligan (1,174 yards) has been unstoppable at times, while South Carolina State relies on KZ Adams (497 yards) to balance their offense. Controlling the clock through rushing could decide the game.
 • Betting Tip: Prop bets on Mulligan’s rushing yards or touchdowns might offer great value, especially if Jackson State leans on its rushing attack.

5. Pay Attention to Special Teams

 • Why It Matters: Special teams often play a pivotal role in HBCU games, and Jackson State’s kicker Matt Noll provides consistency with 22 successful field goals. South Carolina State’s special teams also contribute to their overall game plan, but Jackson State’s edge could prove decisive.
 • Betting Tip: Look for props on total field goals made, as both teams’ defenses might force several red-zone stops, leading to kicking opportunities.

Final Thoughts

With HBCU pride and a national championship on the line, this game promises to be a thrilling battle. Whether betting on the spread, total, or prop bets, understanding each team’s strengths and weaknesses can help you make more informed choices. Always bet responsibly as you enjoy this showcase of HBCU excellence.

South Carolina State University capped off a historic MEAC season by exclaiming its 19th conference title with a resounding 53-21 victory over Norfolk State at Oliver C. Dawson Stadium. The win not only preserved the Bulldogs’ perfect conference record but also solidified their dominance in a season filled with explosive plays and defensive grit.

With starting quarterback Eric Phoenix sidelined with a walking boot, backup quarterback Ryan Stubblefield spearheaded the offense, throwing for 264 yards and two touchdowns while adding two rushing scores. Running back K.Z. Adams was a key contributor, rushing for 128 yards and three touchdowns, including a 99-yard drive capped by a seven-yard touchdown that showcased the Bulldogs’ resilience and control. Wide receiver Justin Smith-Brown was a reliable target, recording 101 yards on seven receptions.

South Carolina State’s defense also shone brightly, holding Norfolk State scoreless for two quarters while forcing critical turnovers. Diego Addison’s interception and timely stops by the defensive line kept the Spartans at bay. Despite an impressive rushing performance by Norfolk State’s Kevon King, who tallied 144 yards and a touchdown, the Spartans were unable to sustain momentum against SCSU’s disciplined unit.

This victory sets the stage for South Carolina State’s return to the Celebration Bowl, where the Bulldogs will face the SWAC champion on December 7. Their opponent will be decided in the SWAC Championship Game between Jackson State and Southern, promising an electric showdown.

With their MEAC legacy firmly intact and sights set on another Celebration Bowl trophy, head coach Chennis Berry and his Bulldogs are poised to represent the conference with pride. South Carolina State now looks to add another chapter to its storied football history in Atlanta, aiming for national HBCU supremacy.

]]>
ORANGEBURG, SC — South Carolina State University was three years into the fledgling new HBCU conference — known as the MEAC — in 1974. That gritty squad brought home the first MEAC title in the school’s history.

Fifty years later, on a brisk Friday night, a group of nearly three dozen former players — including Pro Football Hall of Famer Harry Carson and recently retired SC State coach Buddy Pough — filed into the SHM Gymnasium to commemorate that championship season that laid the foundation for the most dominant program in the conference’s history.

In the middle of it all was Willie Jeffries. The now 87-year-old may not walk as swiftly as he did at age 37 as a young head coach, but his mind — and wit — was as sharp as ever and on display. He shared that he took an $8,000 pay cut to come back to his alma mater after serving as an assistant at the University of Pittsburgh.

“I went to the President and he said ‘that’s all we got,” he said as the crowd laughed. “But money isn’t everything. Look at you guys — got on new suits, dressed up, lovely wives, you have families. And coach is proud of all of you.”

Jeffries arrived to find a team that had won just one game during the 1972 season.

“Everybody had us on their homecoming. Everybody,” Jeffries said at the podium. “So many of ‘em — we took our own float.”

But he had talented players like Carson, Donnie Shell and a young man named Oliver that would go on to be better known as “Buddy.”

“He was cutting edge and approach to doing all of the latest techniques and fundamentals and all that kind of stuff of that time,” Buddy Pough, an offensive lineman on that 1974 championship team recalled. “He had been on the big time. He coached at Pittsburgh and some of the other places that way. So he had all of the different opportunities to be exposed to the latest trends in the game — that kind of stuff.”

The team nearly won it all Jeffries’ first season, but a tie against North Carolina A&T kept South Carolina’s HBCU from claiming the MEAC title that season.

Ironically, North Carolina A&T’s internal issues helped SCSU land Harry Carson. Carson was headed for NC A&T — or so he thought.

“I was offered a full scholarship,” Carson told the crowd on Friday. “But a week later, I got a message. I got a letter from North Carolina A&T. A letter to rescind the scholarship. I didn’t have anything else to do. I was looking at going to the military.

Luckily for Carson and South Carolina State University, a teacher helped him land in Orangeburg. A year later, Jeffries arrived and the rest is history.

As for the team, it came back more determined than ever the following year, knocking off two-time defending league champion North Carolina Central in an early November matchup to take control of the league. It clinched the title on Nov. 23, 1974, earning a bid to the Pelican Bowl — the first attempt by the MEAC and SWAC to create an HBCU title game.

Less than 24 hours after Friday’s gathering, the current South Carolina State football program was set to be crowned as MEAC champions for the 19th time in school history — the most for any MEAC program. And it will do so under the leadership of head coach Chennis Berry, who was hand-picked by Buddy Pough to keep the tradition going.

Bill Hamilton has worked at South Carolina State University in sports information for all 19 of the championships. He’s seen the program switch hands several times and he says there is a direct thread that combines the greatness of Jeffries and Pough — and now Chennis Berry. He related how Jeffries handed the program to Pough to how the keys were handed over to Chennis Berry.

“Coach Jeffries took him around, introduced him to you… know, he’s from this area, but took him to some to the powers that be and supported his every effort. And that’s unusual because a lot of times when a new coach comes in, he does not want the former coach hanging around looking over his shoulder and maybe sabotaging his success,” Hamilton said.

“And then now, 21 years later, Coach Pough, same thing. He reached out to coach Barry and he shown him around and offered him opportunities to be successful. So it’s a wonderful trade. That’s something you don’t see a lot. Not only in HBCU but in college athletics at all, because most people don’t want to go hanging around. But at South Carolina State, that’s a tradition.”

It is a tradition that is built upon what the 1974 team built in helping South Carolina State become one of the landmark programs in HBCU football and college football as a whole.

NORFOLK, Va. – South Carolina State University head football coach Chennis Berry was named the American Football Coaches Association’s (AFCA) 2024 FCS Region 2 Coach of the Year as announced by the organization Tuesday. Coach Berry collected his third AFCA Regional honor earning the accolade at the Division II level in 2022 and 2023 while at DII HBCU Benedict College.

In his first year leading the S.C. State Bulldogs, Chennis Berry led the team to an 8-2 overall record and 4-0 mark in MEAC play with one game outstanding. The Bulldogs secured the 2024 MEAC Champion Title on Saturday, Nov. 16, after defeating Morgan State 54-7, earning the conference’s berth in the 2024 Cricket Celebration Bowl.

Berry’s squad garnered multiple national awards including being named the HBCU+ FCS National Team of the Week (Sept. 9). The Bulldogs also moved into the National Polls for both Stats Perform and AFCA ranking 23rd and T-21st respectively in the most recent polls.

Quarterback Eric Phoenix was named the HBCU+ FCS National Player of the Week on Nov. 4, while numerous South Carolina State University Bulldogs collected MEAC weekly awards throughout the season.

The AFCA recognizes five regional Coach of the Year winners in each of the Association’s five divisions: Football Bowl Subdivision, Football Championship Subdivision, Division II, Division III, and NAIA. The winners are selected by Active members of the Association who vote for coaches in their respective regions and divisions.

These winners will be honored on Monday, January 13, during the 2025 AFCA Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina.

AFCA National Coach of the Year: The AFCA will announce the 2024 National Coaches of the Year winners in FBS, FCS, Division II, Division III and NAIA on Monday, December 16. The Regional winners in each division are finalists for National Coach of the Year.

Award History: The AFCA began recognizing district coaches of the year following the 1960 season. The awards were established the same year Eastman Kodak agreed to sponsor the AFCA Coach of the Year award. Prior to 1960, the Scripps-Howard newspaper chain had sponsored the program, which recognized one national Coach of the Year.

The AFCA first recognized eight district winners in each of two divisions: university and college. In 1972, a ninth district was added in each division. In 1983, the award was changed to recognize regional winners instead of district winners. The number of divisions was also increased from two to four and five regional winners were selected in each division. This resulted in a more equitable selection process and better represented the make-up of the membership. At the same time, the new system increased the number of honorees from 18 to 20. In 2006, the AFCA Division II Award was split into separate Division II and NAIA divisions, giving us the 25 winners we now recognize.

South Carolina State head coach Chennis Berry preaches sole focus on the task at hand, and it has paid off in the form of a MEAC title for the first-year coach.

As he talked with the media following his team’s 54-7 win over Morgan State, he reflected on the Bulldogs’ hard-fought path to clinching the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) title. Despite the celebration, Berry’s focus shifted immediately to their upcoming showdown with Norfolk State.

“It’s a blessing to be in this position, but we’re not finished yet,” Berry said. “We have to keep our eyes on the next game and keep improving.”

South Carolina State secured the MEAC title with a combination of explosive offense and suffocating defense throughout the season. Quarterback Eric Phoenix has been the engine of the offense, throwing for 2,460 yards and 20 touchdowns while completing over 65 percent of his passes. Phoenix’s favorite target, Caden High, has been electrifying, catching 55 passes for 819 yards and seven touchdowns.

On the ground, Deondra Duehart provided a consistent rushing attack, leading the team with 443 yards and seven touchdowns, complemented by KZ Adams’ 369 yards. The offense averaged an impressive 418 yards per game, outscoring opponents by an average of 33.7 to 20.9 points.

“Our success comes from preparation and execution,” Berry said. “Every player understands their role, and we’ve committed to doing the little things right.”

The defense has been just as formidable, highlighted by linebacker Ashaad Hall’s 11 sacks and 13.5 tackles for loss. The unit has forced 13 interceptions, three of which were returned for touchdowns, with standout performances from defensive back Diego Addison and linebacker John Hannibal. Opponents struggled to find rhythm, averaging just 3.2 yards per rush and completing only 53.8% of passes against the Bulldogs.

Special teams have also contributed significantly, with kicker Kyle Gallegos converting eight field goals and the punt team allowing a net average of just 36.3 yards.

Despite the statistics and accolades, Berry remains focused on the fundamentals. The Bulldogs face a Norfolk State team known for its disciplined approach and opportunistic play. Berry emphasized that staying sharp is crucial.

“Norfolk State is a great program. They’ll make us pay if we lose focus,” Berry said. “We have to approach this week like any other, with the same intensity and preparation.”

South Carolina State’s MEAC journey has been marked by several defining moments. A thrilling 24-21 victory over North Carolina Central showcased the team’s ability to grind out tough wins, while their offensive firepower was on full display in a 69-35 rout of Delaware State.

“Our guys have shown incredible resilience,” Berry said. “They’ve stayed hungry, no matter the challenge.”

As the Bulldogs prepare for the Spartans, Berry’s message is clear: the MEAC title is just the beginning. “We’re proud of what we’ve achieved, but the job isn’t done,” he said.

“We want to finish the season strong and continue to represent South Carolina State with pride.”

SC State will play the Jackson State-Southen University winner in the Celebration Bowl on Dec. 14.

HBCU blue blood South Carolina State clinched the MEAC regular season title in emphatic fashion on Saturday, demolishing Morgan State 54-7 at Hughes Stadium in Baltimore. The Bulldogs, under first-year head coach Chennis Berry, secured their second trip to the Celebration Bowl and their 19th MEAC championship in program history.

From the opening kickoff, the Bulldogs (8-2, 4-0 MEAC) dominated on both sides of the ball. Quarterbacks Eric Phoenix and Ronnie Stubblefield combined for three passing touchdowns, while the ground game piled up 241 rushing yards, led by Tyler Smith’s electrifying 86-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.

The defense also played lights out, forcing three interceptions, two of which were returned for touchdowns by defensive standouts J. Washington and Diego Addison. The unit held the Bears (5-6, 2-2 MEAC) to just 78 rushing yards and only nine first downs in the game.

South Carolina State wasted no time asserting its dominance. A 10-play, 80-yard drive capped by Phoenix’s 31-yard touchdown pass to Julian Smith-Brown set the tone early. The Bulldogs erupted for 26 points in the second quarter, highlighted by Washington’s pick-six and a touchdown pass from Stubblefield to Caden High just before halftime.

Morgan State’s lone bright spot came on a short touchdown run by Ma Leatherbury in the second quarter, but it was far from enough to slow down the surging Bulldogs. Addison’s 100-yard interception return in the third quarter sealed the deal, and Deyandr Ruffin added a late rushing score for good measure.

This marks South Carolina State’s return to the Celebration Bowl, where they famously defeated Jackson State in 2021 for the HBCU national title. SC State will host Norfolk State next Saturday in Orangeburg to conclude the regular season, with its sights firmly set on another national title.

In a cloudy HBCU showdown at Greene Stadium, South Carolina State powered past Howard University with a decisive 38-14 victory to maintain control of the MEAC race. The matchup saw South Carolina State’s quarterback Eric Phoenix shine, delivering three touchdown passes, including a 63-yard bomb to Einaj Carter in the second quarter. With this win, South Carolina State remains undefeated in MEAC play and stands as a dominant force in HBCU football.

Howard struggled to gain offensive momentum despite a promising start, where Ja’Shawn Scroggins connected with Isiah Williams for a 10-yard touchdown to tie the game early. Scroggins found some success through the air, completing 15 of 30 passes for 161 yards and two touchdowns, but four costly interceptions halted Howard’s drive potential. Key moments, such as a 47-yard interception return touchdown by the Bulldog’s Jarod Washington underscored the defensive strength that kept Howard on the back foot throughout the game.

The Bulldog’s defense pressured the Bison relentlessly, with standout defensive performances from Kwantre Harry, who secured two interceptions, and Aaron Smith, who recorded eight tackles. Additionally, South Carolina State’s offensive line allowed Phoenix ample time to complete long passes, with another touchdown going to Keshawn Toney, widening the gap in the third quarter.

This win marks a strong momentum boost for South Carolina State as it prepares to face Morgan State next week. Meanwhile, Howard, now looking to regroup, will meet North Carolina Central in a critical matchup. With championship hopes slim, Howard University aims to bounce back and showcase resilience in their upcoming MEAC contest.

Two years ago, LA Rams defensive back Cobie Durant was an HBCU football star looking for a chance to prove himself in front of NFL scouts, like Aaron Smith.

Over the weekend the second-year NFL cornerback got to deliver the news to one of his teammates that he has a chance to walk the same path.

Durant broke the news to the South Carolina State linebacker that he has officially been invited to the East-West Shrine Bowl.

“Im honored to officially invite one of my guys and former teammates, to the East-West Shrine (Bowl) this year,” Durant said in a video recorded on the LA Rams practice field and shown to the SC State program. “In 2022 I was able to go to the East-West Shrine and showcase my skills in front of all 32 teams and get the attention I needed to get drafted into the NFL. This year, a world-class guy gets the same opportunity to be able to showcase his skills at the Dallas Cowboys facility in front of all 32 teams. This year, Aaron Smith, you are invited to the East-West Shrine.”

Aaron Smith is a 6’2, 218 pound linebacker from Manning, South Carolina. Last season he had 63 tackles — 47 solo — with 11 of them coming behind the line. Five of those are sacks. This season he has 32 solo tackles, three tackles for loss and a half a sack.

The stud linebacker got a hug from his coach, Chennis Berry, and was cheered on by his South Carolina State teammates. After a few tears, he addressed his teammates.

“Like coach says – he talks about the team. I couldn’t be able to do the things I do without y’all boys picking me up every day. My D-line making it easy for me to run through guys and make plays.”

Cobie Durant, a fourth round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, has had a solid season so far — winning NFC Defensive Player of The Week honors in October. He’s just the latest in a long line of South Carolina State NFL standouts from the HBCU — particularly on the defensive side. Now, Aaron Smith will get his chance to show why he might be next in that line.

ORANGEBURG, SC — South Carolina State made a statement in HBCU football Thursday night by toppling MEAC favorite North Carolina Central on its home turf in Orangeburg. With a 24-21 victory, SC State seized control of the MEAC and now leads the race to the Celebration Bowl, setting the stage for a potential HBCU championship bid.

From the opening drive, South Carolina State (6-2, 2-0 MEAC) dominated time of possession, showcasing their grit and resilience in front of a home crowd of over 11,000. The Bulldogs took a 10-point lead early, with quarterback Eric Phoenix leading efficient drives that kept the NCCU defense on its heels. Phoenix was key to SC State’s success, passing for 321 yards and two touchdowns, as well as rushing for another. HBCU fans saw his stellar connection with receiver Caden High, who hauled in two touchdown catches, including a clutch 42-yarder late in the third quarter that extended SC State’s lead.

NC Central (6-3, 2-1 MEAC), fighting to keep its Celebration Bowl hopes alive, rallied in the fourth quarter, scoring twice to close the gap. However, South Carolina State’s defense stepped up, applying pressure on NCCU quarterback Walker Harris with four sacks and timely stops. HBCU supporters nationwide will recognize the impact of this win, as SC State now holds the upper hand in the MEAC standings.

For HBCU football, this victory reaffirms South Carolina State’s prominence in the MEAC and highlights their bid for a Celebration Bowl appearance. With this momentum, SC State is now the team to beat as it moves forward in MEAC play. The win gives SC State a potential tie-breaker with NCCU should it suffer another MEAC loss. NCCU will have to win out and hope that two of SCSU’s final three opponents hand it a defeat to get back to the Celebration Bowl for the first time since 2022.

First-year South Carolina State head coach Chennis Berry improved to 4-0 all-time on Thursday night games, winning his first one with SCSU after going 3-0 with Benedict College over the previous three seasons. Despite his team’s now lofty position, he holds steadfast to his mantra of going ‘1-0’ every week.

“We’re going to we’re going to enjoy this,” Berry said after the game. “Trust me, winning is hard. So we’re going to enjoy this one for 24 hours. And then we’re going to put this one to bed. And then we’re going to get ready for a good Howard University football team.”

The Bulldogs are not only defending their home turf but also strengthening their legacy in HBCU athletics, proving they are a force in the quest for HBCU football supremacy.

Thursday night’s MEAC showdown between North Carolina Central and South Carolina State is shaping up to be a game with high stakes for these two HBCU powerhouses. The North Carolina Central Eagles come into the game with big expectations, having been picked to win the MEAC and led by their seasoned head coach, Trey Oliver, who already boasts a Celebration Bowl victory. Meanwhile, SCSU is ready to shake things up under new head coach Chennis Berry. Berry brings fresh energy after his historic run with Benedict College in Division II, and the Bulldogs are looking to prove themselves as serious contenders.

The game’s significance runs deep for both teams. For North Carolina Central, a win would underscore their status as the MEAC’s top team, setting them up for a strong postseason push. For South Carolina State, this is a chance to play spoiler and disrupt the Eagles’ title dreams. With both HBCU fanbases rallying behind their teams, this game could shift the season narrative and heat up the conference race.

What North Carolina Central Needs to Do to Win:

 1. Walker Harris Needs to Shine: Harris has been a force at quarterback, throwing 15 touchdowns and only four interceptions. His leadership under center has been instrumental for North Carolina Central, and against a tough South Carolina State secondary, Harris will need to stay sharp. He’ll look to connect with top receivers like Markell Quick and Joaquin Davis, who can exploit gaps and stretch the field.
 2. Keep Feeding J’Mari Taylor: Taylor, averaging over 98 yards per game, is the workhorse in the run game and a major asset in the red zone. Taylor’s ability to break tackles and find the end zone will be key to putting South Carolina State on their heels.

What South Carolina State Needs to Do to Win:

 1. Protect Eric Phoenix: Phoenix has shown his passing power this season, throwing 14 touchdowns. However, North Carolina Central will be looking to pressure him. South Carolina State’s offensive line, which has allowed only 11 sacks, must be at their best to keep Phoenix upright and productive.
 2. Get Points Early and Control the Clock: If South Carolina State can get an early lead, they’ll have the chance to control the game’s tempo. The Bulldogs’ red-zone efficiency and reliance on big plays from receivers like Caden High will be essential.

As the Eagles aim to dominate and South Carolina State looks to play spoiler, this HBCU matchup promises intensity from the opening kickoff. For Walker Harris and the North Carolina Central offense, a victory solidifies their conference lead and strengthens their Celebration Bowl hopes, while South Carolina State would love nothing more than to rewrite the MEAC script.

It’s a battle of HBCU giants where every play counts, and every yard could mean the difference between victory and heartbreak.

The post HBCU Football: What We Learned After Week 1 of MEAC Play appeared first on HBCU Gameday.

The first week of HBCU football in the MEAC provided a clear look at team strengths, key players, and areas needing improvement. As the season unfolds, North Carolina Central and South Carolina State have emerged as top contenders, while other teams face challenges in offense and consistency. Here’s what we’ve learned about each team, the standout players making an impact, and their strengths and weaknesses.

North Carolina Central University (NCCU): The Class of the MEAC

Key Players: Walker Harris (QB), J’Mari Taylor (RB), Jaki Brevard (LB)

 • Strengths: Balanced, Adaptive Offense, Efficient Defense
 • Weaknesses: Depth in Secondary Pass Coverage

NCCU entered MEAC play as a preseason favorite, and its early performance has justified that ranking. Quarterback Walker Harris efficiently leads a balanced offense, skillfully blending passing with a strong ground game led by running back J’Mari Taylor, who is averaging close to 100 yards per game. On defense, linebacker Jaki Brevard anchors a disciplined unit that excels in third-down stops and red-zone play.

While NCCU’s defensive front is among the strongest in the MEAC, occasional lapses in secondary coverage could be tested by high-powered passing teams. Nonetheless, NCCU’s balanced and adaptable approach makes them the team to beat in the MEAC.

South Carolina State, MEAC, HBCU

South Carolina State University (SCSU): The Primary Challenger

Key Players: Eric Phoenix (QB), Caden High (WR), Jayden Broughton (DL)

 • Strengths: Explosive Offense, Strong Run Defense
 • Weaknesses: Vulnerabilities in Pass Defense

South Carolina State has emerged as the only real challenger to NCCU’s dominance. Quarterback Eric Phoenix is among the MEAC’s top quarterbacks, leading an offense with big-play potential, particularly with deep targets like wide receiver Caden High. SCSU’s passing game is explosive, creating consistent threats to score. Jayden Broughton, a dominant force on the defensive line, reinforces a strong run-stopping defense.

However, SCSU’s secondary has shown vulnerability, sometimes allowing big gains through the air. While their aggressive defensive approach creates turnovers, it can leave them exposed to strong passing attacks. For South Carolina State to compete at the top, tightening their pass defense will be essential.

Morgan State University: Defense Delivers, Offense Struggles

Key Players: Elijah Williams (DL), Arturo Mattocks (LB), Myles Miree (RB)

 • Strengths: Dominant Defense, Effective Pass Rush
 • Weaknesses: Limited Offensive Production

Morgan State’s defense, led by standout linemen Elijah Williams and linebacker Arturo Mattocks, has delivered on its preseason expectations, consistently generating pressure, tackles for loss, and quarterback sacks. Their defense has kept them competitive, making Morgan a tough opponent to score against.

However, its offense has struggled to produce points. Running back Myles Miree leads their conservative ground game, but limited passing success leaves them predictable. Morgan State’s success this season will hinge on whether they can generate more offensive yards to support their defense.

Howard University: Defensive Bright Spots, Inconsistent Quarterback Play

Key Players: Ja’Shawn Scroggins (QB), Kenny Gallop Jr. (S), Jarett Hunter (RB)

 • Strengths: Versatile Defense, Strong Pass Coverage
 • Weaknesses: Inconsistent Quarterback Play, Offensive Efficiency

Howard came into the season with high expectations, but inconsistent quarterback play from Ja’Shawn Scroggins has hampered offensive success. Scroggins’ struggles with accuracy have stalled drives, despite solid ground support from running back Jarett Hunter. On defense, safety Kenny Gallop Jr. has been a consistent playmaker, leading a strong pass defense that generates turnovers.

While Howard’s defense is effective at limiting high-scoring opponents, the team’s success will depend on more reliable quarterback play. If Scroggins can improve his decision-making, Howard has the potential to challenge the MEAC’s top teams.

Delaware State University: Consistent but Limited

Key Players: Jaden Sutton (RB), Marqui Adams (QB), Kahleef Jimmison (LB)

 • Strengths: Steady Rushing Game, Disciplined Defense
 • Weaknesses: Limited Passing Attack, Depth on Defense

Delaware State’s performance closely aligns with preseason expectations. Running back Jaden Sutton anchors a solid rushing game, while quarterback Marqui Adams provides steady, if not high-scoring, support. Linebacker Kahleef Jimmison leads a disciplined defense, but the team’s lack of depth in the secondary leaves them vulnerable against passing-focused teams.

For Delaware State to advance in the MEAC standings, they’ll need more offensive balance and defensive depth. Their strong running game has kept them competitive, but limited passing potential may hinder them against the conference’s top teams.

Norfolk State University: The Spoilers

Key Players: AJ Richardson (LB), Daylan Long (DB), Kevon King (RB)

 • Strengths: Effective Ground Game, Turnover Generation
 • Weaknesses: Inconsistent Passing, Defensive Depth

Norfolk State has shown potential as a dark horse in the MEAC, with linebacker AJ Richardson and defensive back Daylan Long leading a turnover-generating defense. Running back Kevon King drives their offense with a solid ground game. However, their passing game lacks consistency, limiting their scoring potential, especially against well-rounded defenses.

Norfolk State could create surprises in the MEAC standings if it establish a more reliable passing game. If it continues improving, it could upset the top teams and play spoiler as the HBCU season progresses.

Week 1 Takeaways and MEAC Outlook

Top Teams and Key Differences: North Carolina Central and South Carolina State have set the standard in MEAC HBCU football. NCCU’s balanced offense and South Carolina State’s big-play passing game position them as frontrunners. Morgan State’s stout defense is keeping them competitive, though offensive limitations hold them back. Howard’s season will hinge on improved quarterback play, while Delaware State and Norfolk State show potential to surprise as underdogs.

Key Players Defining MEAC Football: Quarterbacks Walker Harris (NCCU) and Eric Phoenix (SCSU) are driving the top offenses in the MEAC, while running backs like Jaden Sutton (Delaware State) and Myles Miree (Morgan State) are crucial to their teams’ ground games. Defensive leaders like Elijah Williams (Morgan State) and Kenny Gallop Jr. (Howard) are making key plays that keep their teams in the fight.

Early-season trends suggest North Carolina Central is the team to beat, with South Carolina State’s high-powered offense close behind as the HBCU national title picture takes shape. If teams like Morgan State, Howard, and Norfolk State can address offensive challenges, the MEAC season promises close games and potential upsets. Week 1 has set the stage for a dynamic season in HBCU football, with each team shaping its path in MEAC standings.

ORANGEBURG, SC – Robert “Bobby” Lewis, a legendary HBCU basketball player at SC State during the mid-60s was memorialized Saturday, Oct. 5, 2024, during a special service at Franklin Delano Roosevelt Park, 1500 Pattison Ave. at Broad Street, Philadelphia, PA.

Lewis died on Sept. 19, 2024. He was 78.

During his playing days at SC State (1964-1968), Lewis was known for his flamboyant dribbling, passing, and playmaking. A playground legend in his hometown of Philadelphia, PA, he lifted the HBCU basketball team to prominence under head coach Ed Martin, serving as team captain in his junior and senior campaigns.

The 5-10 guard averaged around 12 points his first two seasons at SC State before his average soared to 19.1 points as a junior when he helped the Bulldogs to the NCAA Division II Region Finals in 1967. He capped his Bulldog career averaging 30.9 points, 8th best in the country, and 11.8 assists as a senior.

Lewis was a three-time All-SIAC (Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) performer and tournament MVP in 1967. COOKEVILLE, TENN.—Graduate HBCU football quarterback Eric Phoenix threw for a game-high 412 yards and three (3) touchdowns connecting on 17-of-31 with a long of 70 yards to lead South Carolina State to a 22-20 win over Tennessee Tech Saturday (Oct. 5) inside Tucker Stadium.

South Carolina State jumped out to an early lead, but Tennessee Tech reclaimed it with some timely takeaways and had a chance to win the game on a last-second field goal. However, the kick sailed wide left as time expired, leading the Bulldogs to the victory over the Golden Eagles on Saturday in a non-conference matchup.

“I am so proud of this team and how the kept their heads when things got tough at the end,” said South Carolina State head coach Chennis Berry. “We still have to work to do and clean some things up but for the most part we are getting stronger as a team.”

Several Bulldogs had outstanding performances on the day.

Caden High had a team-high seven (7) catches for 150 yards, while Justin Smith-Brown added four (4) receptions for 129 yards and two (2) touchdowns, which added the 465-yard total offense.

Tight end Nick Brown gave that extra spark on the offense, filling in for the injured Keshawn Toney chipping in two (2) catches for 89 yards including a 67-yard touchdown reception.

Linebacker Aaron Smith led the defense with a team-high 10 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, and 1 interception for 5 yards. Teammate Jadin Jones also added 10 tackles, Diego Addison’s six (6) tackles, and an interception.

Berry noted, “The defense held us down at the end. I have give those guys a special thank you each week I can see the strength in them as a unit.”

South Carolina State improves to 3-2 overall, while Tennessee Tech falls to 2-3.

NEXT UPSouth Carolina State will take on Division II HBCU football program Fort Valley State on Oct. 19th at home for a special occasion celebrating “Parents Week/Community Day along with ROTC|Youth Day” in a 2 p.m. kickoff.

North Carolina A&T’s struggles continued in its matchup against South Carolina State, as the MEAC squad took control of the game for a 45-25. Despite some bright moments, A&T’s offensive inconsistencies and defensive lapses proved costly, leading to its defeat.

The win was the first for South Carolina State against North Carolina A&T since 2014. It snapped a four-game losing streak to its long-time HBCU rival and former MEAC foe.

The game began with promise for A&T, as it managed to keep the contest close through much of the first half, heading into halftime with the score tied. However, South Carolina State came out strong in the third quarter, taking control of the game with a decisive drive. Their running game, which had already been a challenge for A&T to contain, broke through with a series of powerful rushes, capping off the drive with a touchdown to break the deadlock. South Carolina State’s offensive line created large gaps, allowing their running backs to gain chunk yardage and wear down the Aggies’ defense.

North Carolina A&T, South Carolina State

In response, North Carolina A&T struggled to get back on track offensively. The Aggies failed to answer South Carolina State’s touchdown, as their drives stalled due to key mistakes and an inability to convert on third downs. SC State’s defense also tightened up, shutting down A&T’s rushing lanes and putting consistent pressure on the quarterback, which further hindered any comeback attempts.

South Carolina State capitalized on A&T’s turnovers and lack of discipline, pulling ahead with key plays on both sides of the ball. By the time the fourth quarter rolled around, SC State had taken full control, sealing the game with a crucial late touchdown after another strong drive.

SC State improved to 2-2 on the season, getting its first home win under new head coach Chennis Berry. North Carolina A&T dropped to 1-4 on the season has been outscored 111-47 against HBCUs from the MEAC, including last week’s 66-24 loss to NC Central.

Shaq Davis, a wide receiver from HBCU South Carolina State, has been signed to the Pittsburgh Steelers practice squad. After going undrafted in the 2023 NFL Draft, Davis is getting another chance to prove himself in the NFL. He previously spent time with the New Orleans Saints and Philadelphia Eagles practice squads before being signed by the Steelers on Sept 10, 2024.

Davis played at South Carolina State, an HBCU known to produce NFL talent. During his HBCU football career, Shaq Davis became one of the top receivers in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC). His most memorable performance came during the 2021 Celebration Bowl, where he caught three touchdowns and helped South Carolina State win against Jackson State. His standout performance on the biggest stage in HBCU football showed how much talent he had to offer a professional team.

HBCU NFL Pittsburgh Steelers

Now that Davis has joined the Pittsburgh Steelers Practice Squad, he hopes to make an impact and earn his way onto the active roster. Pittsburgh is known for helping overlooked players develop into NFL stars, so this could potentially be a perfect opportunity for him. Davis’ combination of size, speed, and playmaking ability was evident in his final season at South Carolina State, where he finished with 934 yards and 11 touchdowns.

For Davis, this move is a step forward in his career, but it also highlights the growing recognition of HBCU athletes in the NFL. His journey is an example of how players from HBCUs can succeed at the highest level. As he begins his time with the Steelers, Davis is a player to watch as he represents both his school and the broader HBCU community.

Chennis Berry got his first win as the new head coach of South Carolina State in a big out of conference matchup. In a thrilling game, SCSU secured a hard-fought victory over The Citadel with a final score of 23-20. It’s the second year in a row that South Carolina State beat the Citadel, winning 31-10 last season.

Passing Game

Eric Phoenix was instrumental in the win, completing 18 of 23 passes for 194 yards and one touchdown. Chennis Berry had to be pleased with Phoenix’s performance and his efficiency which was key in managing the game without throwing an interception.

On the other side, The Citadel’s Johnathan Bennett threw for 169 yards on 13 of 22 passing attempts, with one touchdown and one interception. Despite the pressure from South Carolina State’s defense, Bennett managed to make some key plays but could not match the efficiency of South Carolina State’s aerial attack.

Rushing Attack

South Carolina State’s rushing game was a major factor in their victory, amassing 217 yards on 45 carries. Deondra Duehart led the charge with 128 yards on 18 carries. Eric Phoenix also contributed with 41 rushing yards, while Kazarius Adams and Josh Shaw added valuable yards. The Bulldogs’ strong ground game controlled the clock and kept The Citadel’s defense on its heels.

The Citadel’s rushing attack struggled to keep pace, gaining 106 yards on 26 carries. Corey Ibrahim had a notable performance with 52 yards on just 7 carries, including a long run of 48 yards. However, The Citadel’s rushing efforts were not enough to counter South Carolina State’s dominant performance on the ground.

Receiving

South Carolina State’s receiving corps was led by Justin Smith-Brown, who had 94 yards on 5 catches. Caden High was crucial with a touchdown reception, and Einaj Carter also contributed with key receptions. The Bulldogs’ receiving unit provided necessary support to Phoenix’s passing game, ensuring crucial completions and first downs.

The Citadel’s receiving was highlighted by Dervon Pesnell’s 72 yards on 2 catches. They managed to distribute the ball effectively, but their production was limited compared to South Carolina State’s. Saul Diaz caught The Citadel’s lone touchdown reception.

Special Teams

Special teams played a significant role in the SCSU win. Kyle Gallegos was solid, converting both extra points and a 30-yard field goal. On kick returns, Caden High and Einaj Carter provided strong performances, with High averaging 35 yards per return and Carter adding 20 yards on his return.

The Citadel’s Ben Barnes was perfect on both field goal attempts, including a 47-yarder, and added two extra points for a total of 8 points. Their kick return game was efficient, but the Bulldog’s coverage minimized the impact of those returns.

Defensive Efforts

South Carolina State’s defense was effective, forcing one crucial interception and maintaining solid pressure throughout the game. Adonis Davis made an important interception, contributing to the Bulldogs’ defensive success and helping to secure the victory.

Final Thoughts

South Carolina State’s victory was marked by their dominant performance in several key areas, including first downs, total yards, and time of possession. Their ability to balance an effective passing and rushing game while avoiding turnovers proved decisive in their 23-20 win over The Citadel. SCSU will look to build on this successful performance and continue their strong season. Chennis Berry will take his squad to Georgia Southern next week for a 6pm kickoff.

In a thrilling matchup between Florida A&M and South Carolina State, the Rattlers overcame a late deficit to secure a dramatic 22-18 victory. The Bulldogs struck first, taking an early 3-0 lead with a 35-yard field goal by Kyle Gallegos late in the first quarter. FAMU responded in the second quarter with a 29-yard touchdown pass from Daniel Richardson to Koby Gross, giving the Rattlers a 7-3 lead. As the half closed, South Carolina State added another Gallegos field goal, cutting the deficit to 7-6.

South Carolina State regained momentum in the third quarter when Eric Phoenix connected with Kazarius Adams for an 8-yard touchdown. Despite a missed extra point, the Bulldogs led 12-7. Early in the fourth quarter, Josh Shaw powered in a 1-yard touchdown run, extending their lead to 18-7, although a failed two-point conversion left the door open.

Florida A&M’s offense surged back as Richardson found Karter Johnson for a 7-yard touchdown, followed by a successful two-point conversion that cut the lead to 18-15. With time winding down, Richardson engineered another drive, capping it with a 6-yard touchdown pass to Thad Franklin to reclaim the lead, 22-18 with 5:39 remaining.

Chennis Berry makes his coaching debut for South Carolina State University.

South Carolina State’s offense couldn’t answer on the following drive as FAMU held the Bulldogs to a three and out series. The Rattlers ran out the remaining 4:31 with a ten play drive.

Phoenix completed just 12 of 25 passes for 132 yards with a single touchdown for SCSU. On the ground, the Bulldogs ran for 154 yards, led by Deondra Duehart’s 74 yards. Meanwhile, Richardson carried the Rattlers’ offense, completing 23 of 38 passes for 282 yards and three touchdowns.

The FAMU win spoils the coaching debut for Chennis Berry who took over in the offseason from the now retired Buddy Pough. But for a game that had a lot of buzz heading into the season, it may be a sour note for SCSU fans but the game certainly lived up to expectations. The Bulldogs were playing their first game of the season, FAMU improves to 2-0 coming on the heels of a win against Norfolk State in the MEAC/SWAC Challenge.

Chennis Berry is set to make his debut as a Division I HBCU head coach at South Carolina State on Saturday against FAMU.

The former Savannah State offensive lineman has spent the last three seasons turning Benedict College into a powerhouse at the Division II level. The team went 11-0 in the regular season in each of the last two years claiming the SIAC Championship after a 5-5 inaugural season in 2021.

Berry’s success may have seemed overnight, but it was a journey nearly 30 years in the making. He bounced around at HBCUs at the Division II and FCS level for decades before finally getting his shot at Benedict, and he made the most of it.

“I was never worried about the next job. I just wanted to be the best I could be at the job I had,” Berry said of his journey on the MEAC football coaches call. “ And at the time, I was a OC/O-line coach, which a lot of times that doesn’t happen you know, a lot of times they give the OC play-calling jobs to the quarterback guys, man. But I was one of the few offensive line coaches and play callers in America for the last 15 years.”

He was pursued by several HBCUs looking for a head coach after the 2023 season, but ultimately headed less than an hour down the road in Orangeburg, SC. He takes over for Buddy Pough, who spent more than two decades as its head coach. He was hand-picked for the job by Pough and he’s aware of the awesome legacy he inherits at the school, which has had just four head coaches in the last 50 years.

Chennis Berry, South Carolina State, HBCU Gameday

“I’m just grateful for the opportunity to be the head coach now at South Carolina State University,” Berry said. “I’ve been following South Carolina State for a long, long time. You know, as a player and as a coach. And I’ve been knowing about the Bulldogs and the tradition. You talking about 18 (champion)ships, man, you’re talking about since 1974.”

Transisitoning from Benedict to South Carolina State

Berry retained many of the top players for South Carolina State, including stud middle linebacker Aaron Smith and the entire offensive line. He also brought in several of his former Benedict players. Since being hired in December he has been putting his imprint on the program and building a sense of cohesiveness around the program

“The guys bought in and to what we’re doing and how we’re doing, we had the opportunity to have a spring ball, offseason workout, situation, as well as have summer weekly bond together. We had about 70 of our guys here this summer just kind of coming together and then obviously have a training camp where we had some guest speakers, things of that nature, a lot of team bonding because for us i t’s about the team.”

One player who followed Berry from Columbia to Orangeburg is quarterback Eric Phoenix. Well, sort of. Phoenix took the scenic route to SC State, spending a season at Murray State after propelling his career at Benedict College. However he got there, Berry is glad to have him as his starter heading into Tallahassee.

“He can make every throw. He’s a true dual-threat guy,” Berry said of Phoenix. “The growth and maturity that I’ve seen him since he left the program, when you get a chance to go to Murray State, he was able to see some different things and how other people does things – so he was able to bring some ideas of some of the things that they did at Murray State as well.”

Daniel Richardson FAMU

FAMU presents big challenge at home

Looking forward, Berry, Phoenix and South Carolina State have their work cut out for them. Not only will they go up against the reigning HBCU national champions – but they will face the program with the longest home-winning streak in the FCS.

FAMU does have a game on its belt – something Berry and his team don’t. That also gave them a chance to observe FAMU’s new starter, Daniel Richardson, who made his debut in the team’s 24-23 win over Norfolk State last Saturday.

“(Richardson) did a very good job of managing the game. You look at Richardson and you know that’s what he did – manage the game. He didn’t make mistakes. He didn’t he didn’t turn the ball over. He did a good job of just taking what the defense gave him and that’s definitely a challenge. Whenever you have a quarterback you have a chance.”

Berry went on to say he observed Richardson’s poise, which he credited to having played quarterback proficiently at the FBS level.

“He’s not going to do anything to put them in bad situations. So I thought he was very efficient,” Berry continued. “He got the ball to his open guys. And more than anything we always tell the quarterback ‘don’t turn it over.’ And he did a good job of not turning it over to the team. So we have a big time challenge.”

SC State and FAMU are scheduled for a 6 PM kickoff. The game will be broadcast on ESPN Plus.

This Saturday’s MEAC vs SWAC matchup in Tallahassee, FL will not only feature two traditional football rivals, the Florida A&M (FAMU) Rattlers and South Carolina State (SC State) Bulldogs, but it will also feature a top-tier HBCU band battle at halftime. The FAMU Marching 100 will square off against the SC State Marching 101. Starting with the names, it already brings about a mythical comparison.

Dr. William P. Foster took over the marching bands at FAMU in 1946. At the time, FAMU’s band was a military band, much like many in HBCU. It was very stiff and precise. Foster developed and patented 30 new moves for the marching band that have become standard in most marching bands, especially an HBCU band. Dr. Shelby Chipman currently leads the Marching 100.

In 1918, South Carolina State University began its marching band. It began with military drills and assisted with Sunday school. Dr. William H. Jackson was the school’s first director of bands. Currently, Dr. Patrick Moore leads the band. He took the reigns in 2018.

The story of Marching 100 and Marching 101

The interesting thing about the name Marching 100 is that the band never had 100 members. The band was smaller than 50 pieces when Foster took over. His goal was to get up to 100 musicians, thus the name Marching 100 came to fruition. However, the band went from about 80 members to about 115 members and has grown at times to over 400 members. Never did it stop at 100 members.

Talking with several sources, the name difference is not pinpointed to one scenario, but two major ones. The first scenario centers around two brothers. Longtime FAMU band arranger Dr. Lindsey Sarjeant, who also serves as chairman of the FAMU Department of Music, has a brother who was band director for SCSU from 1976 to 2004. This period saw a rise in the profile of the band. Dr. Ronald Sarjeant would claim that the SCSU band was one step above FAMU’s renowned band, so he gave them the name Marching 101.

The second scenario is that SCSU’s band had 100 members. When they added a lone majorette to the squad, it took on the name Marching 101.

Moore laughs at the number of stories he’s heard about how the name came about. “I’ve even heard some more stories recently. I am not sure anyone can nail down a definitive answer,” he said.

However, research finds that Southern University previously was named the Marching 132 and Marching 150 before settling on their current and most popular name “The Human Jukebox.”

She taught the band to dance

HBCU HBCU band FAMU Marching 100 Marching 101

In the late 1950s, Foster went to the Dean of the School of Music and announced sweeping new additions to the band. One of which has defined marching bands to this day. Breaking from the pure precision nature of the military bands, Foster would garner the assistance of the school’s dance instructor, Dr. Beverly Barber. She would teach the band dance moves while Foster picked and chose what he wanted them to perform. This was documented by Ebony magazine and is considered the first time a band would break traditional marching precision to perform jazz and popular dancing.

Shaq Davis had an impressive career at South Carolina State University, where he established himself as a dominant wide receiver. Standing at 6’5″ and weighing 220 pounds, Davis was a matchup nightmare for opposing defenses. Over three seasons with the Bulldogs, Davis accumulated 128 receptions for 2,407 yards, averaging an impressive 20.6 yards per catch, and scoring 39 touchdowns. His performance in the 2021 Celebration Bowl, where he earned MVP honors, was a standout moment, highlighting his ability to shine in big games.

Davis’ college success led him to declare for the 2023 NFL Draft, where he signed as an undrafted free agent with the New Orleans Saints. Despite not being drafted, Davis secured a six-figure guaranteed contract, underscoring his potential at the professional level. He is one of a handful of former HBCU receivers looking to land a slot in the NFL.

The 2024 HBCU football season is on the horizon, and South Carolina State University is ready for a comeback under new head coach Chennis Berry. Known for his winning ways, Berry aims to lead the Bulldogs back to the top of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC).

Chennis Berry’s Coaching Journey

Chennis Berry’s path through college football showcases his coaching talent, moving from Division I to Division II and back. Before joining South Carolina State, he led another South Carolina HBCU – Benedict College – to a 27-7 record and two Division II playoff appearances.

“It was a great ride,” Berry reflects. “We had a great run there at Benedict College, man, we were able to do some amazing things. But now it’s time to write a new story.”

Berry has a lot of experience in HBCU college football, including at the FCS level.

“So, 10 years in the MEAC and seven years in the SWAC. Football is football. Cover two is the same cover two, whether it’s Division II, Division I, or the NFL. Inside zone is the same inside zone. Ball is ball,” Berry explains.

HBCU South Carolina State MEAC Chennis Berry

Players to Watch

Berry’s leadership will highlight several key Bulldogs this season:

 • Nick Taiste (OL): A standout performer and Preseason FCS All-American.
 • Cam Johnson (OL) and Eric Brown, Jr. (OL): Key to the offensive line’s strength.
 • Justin Smith-Brown (WR): A dynamic playmaker.
 • Keshawn Toney (TE): A versatile asset in both the passing and running game.

On defense, watch out for:

 • Aaron Smith (LB): A leader with strong play-reading skills.
 • Jamare Benjamin (DB): A playmaker in the secondary.
 • Einaj Carter (RS): An explosive return specialist.

MEAC Expectations

The Bulldogs are predicted to finish fourth in the MEAC this season. Despite this ranking, Berry remains optimistic.

“It’s important every day that we just chop wood, carry water, fall in love with the process and get our young men to just love where they’re at,” Berry stated.

Berry is just the fifth head coach for the program in the last 50 years and was handed the reigns by a legend in Buddy Pough. He has a deep respect for the program’s legacy as he looks to move it forward.

“Look at the history of South Carolina State football,” he says. “I said this in my opening press conference: the bluebloods of HBCU football. Because I’m a product of HBCU football, and I’ve been on an HBCU campus since 1991, I’ve always looked at South Carolina State as one of the top programs in all of HBCU.”

Season Outlook

South Carolina State starts their 2024 season on August 31st against Florida A&M at Bragg Memorial Stadium. With Berry’s focus on a strong ground game and disciplined play, the Bulldogs are set to challenge for the MEAC title.

“At the end of the day, we’re going to get 60 minutes. And we’re going to prepare. We don’t worry about what’s going on at the end,” Berry emphasizes. “Every day is about improvement and preparation. We’re committed to getting better and competing at the highest level.”

After building up Benedict College, Chennis Berry is taking over one of HBCU football’s most storied programs in the FCS – South Carolina State.

He will enter the FCS ranks as a head coach for the first time after cutting his teeth at the HBCU Division II level. How big of a difference is that historically? Let’s take a look at how some of the other big winners at the Division II level have fared historically when taking over from lower levels of HBCU football success.

Bill Hayes – Winston-Salem State to North Carolina A&T

A Durham native and a star at North Carolina College (Central), Hayes worked at Wake Forest as an assistant before taking over as head coach at Winston-Salem State. Hayes took a WSSU program that had never won a CIAA title and led it to back-to-back undefeated, CIAA titles in 1977 and ’78. His teams at WSSU made it to five straight CIAA title games before he finally won the big game in 1987. He went 89-40-2 during his tenure, setting the stage for a program that now has 12 CIAA titles – tied for most amongst active members of the league.

Following that season, Hayes was hired down the road at North Carolina A&T. His team went 2-9 that season – including a loss to a Winston-Salem State team led by former assistant Pete Richardson.

Hayes’ tenure was eventually a success, as he coached 170 games winning 106 of them – both North Carolina A&T records. His teams won three MEAC titles and two national titles. He is also up for the College Football Hall of Fame.

Pete Richardson – Winston-Salem State to Southern University

Richardson played in the NFL after starring at Dayton (OH) in college and then became a high school coach. He was discovered by Bill Hayes and joined his staff shortly thereafter. He ran a tough defense with several former NFL stars as Hayes led the way for five straight CIAA Southern Division Crowns and the 1987 CIAA title. Hayes’ departure before the 1988 season opened the door for Richardson at WSSU. He went on to win a title in his first season and went to the CIAA title game in each of his first three seasons. He won a total of three CIAA championships in five years before being hired away to Southern University.

Richardson inherited a Southern team that was 5-6 in 1992 under Marino Casem. Richardson won his first eight games and went 11-1 in his first season. He was perfect in the SWAC and led Southern to a win in the Heritage Bowl. He left the school nearly two decades later as a highly decorated, Hall of Fame Coach. He won 128 games and lost just 62 while at Southern.

Billy Joe – Central State to Florida A&M

Joe, like Pete Richardson, made it to the NFL in the 1960s from a PWI. He was a star at Villanova before being drafted into the pros. He began his coaching career at Cheyney State, leading the HBCU in the PSAC to a 31-32 record throughout seven seasons. Joe made his mark at Central State University, where after a short stint with the Philadelphia Eagles, he coached from 1981 through 1993.

Joe had CSU at 12-1 by his third season in Wilberforce, OH, making it to the Division II championship game. CSU would lose that title, but after moving to the NAIA in the late 1980s, his team became the most consistent in black college football, winning at least 10 games in six consecutive seasons and routinely beating Division I-AA HBCU football powers. He led his teams to national titles in 1990 and 1992 before he was finally lured away to Florida A&M.

Billy Joe took over for Ken Riley in 1994 and led the team to a 6-5 record. His teams went 9-3 in each of the next two seasons and eventually made a run at the Division I-AA national title under his Gulf Coast Offense.

Chennis Berry is the toast of HBCU football now, sitting at the head of the table at South Carolina State University.

But it was a long and winding road to get there. And let Berry tell it – it started with a firing.

Berry shared he was recruited by HBCU coaching legend Bill Davis, getting his only scholarship offer from Savannah State while playing high school basketball in the early 1990s. Davis is the man who coached Shannon Sharpe when he was at Savannah State.

He played his first two seasons under Davis at SSU before finishing his career under Joe Crosby.

When his playing days were up, Crosby offered the young offensive lineman the chance to become offensive line coach at then-SIAC rival Morris Brown University. He started working two days after graduating from Savannah State.

“He knew me and my leadership role and things of that nature,” Berry told “Inside The Headset. “ So he offered me – at 23-years old – to be the offensive line coach.

Chennis Berry, Benedict College HBCU Legacy Bowl
Chennis Berry had two perfect regular seasons at Benedict College after toiling as an HBCU football assistant for decades.

“When the season was over he called me in the office and said ‘you know what, we’re going to a different direction,” Berry recounted in his signature, gruff voice. “We need some more experience as an O-line coach. You’re a little young and we need to take this program to the next level, so we’re going to have to go in a different direction.”

He admitted it was a tough pill to swallow at the time. Today, nearly 30 years later, Berry views that firing as a turning point in his career.

Berry was almost immediately added to George Small’s staff at Kentucky State University. He made the most of his time there, pursuing his master’s degree and sharpening his skills. A few years later, Small was hired as the head coach at North Carolina A&T, and Berry joined him as offensive line coach.

“I really believe that that firing, really spearheaded my career because it put me in front of people in different staffs that now…every job – I’m going to encourage young people with this. Up until I became a head coach – and I started interviewing for head coaching jobs – out of all the jobs I’ve ever had, and I’ve worked at nine different institutions. I’ve never interviewed. The crazy thing about never interviewing is my reputation started to progress and people started to know me.”

Chennis Berry spent the next 17 years honing his skills at various HBCUs in the FCS and Division I before being hired at Benedict College. After a 5-5 season in 2021, he led Benedict College to back-to-back 11-0 regular seasons and SIAC championships.

Now he’ll look to get South Carolina State back to the MEAC mountaintop.

NIL is a hot topic in college football and the prevailing attitude is that if you don’t have any NIL money coming into your football team, you better be in the process of getting some. South Carolina State University, (SC State) is an HBCU deep in the heart of SEC country where the NIL money flows through the predominantly white institutions of the Southeastern Conference like river rapids.

If an HBCU like South Carolina State hopes to keep any of their local talent at home, they better be prepared to have some NIL dollars ready to compete with not only the power conferences like the SEC but also schools within their conference who may be further along in the NIL process.

Below is an article from the SC State athletic department announcing the launch of its first-ever NIL collective, the SC State Bulldogs Exchange.

Florida hip-hop legend Plies has been one of the more vocal celebrity HBCU advocates online over the past several years. Posting consistently about HBCU sports and culture to his over 10 million combined social media followers. Recently, the Fort Myers Florida native reposted a video from the SC State football Instagram account on the importance of football players graduating from college, not just coming to South Carolina State University looking for an opportunity to play football professionally.

The March 4th post on Twitter (X) from plies reads. “If U Ain’t Showin These Young Men How To Get 💰 W/o Sports! U Failing Them Point Blank Period! Dem NFL Lies Sound Good But The Truth Means More. S/o To @SCState_Fb For Given These Kids The Truth! @coachberry77 Keep Given Them The Truth & Not What They Wanna Hear @ksj_carolinagal

Plies attached a snippet of a video from the SC State football Instagram page. from a weekly segment called “WE EDUCATE WEDNESDAYS,” where a guest speaker addresses the Bulldog football team. The video features speaker Michael Summers Sr., who is not only a former SC State football player, but is the CEO of his own company, Summertime Enterprises, Inc., a logistics services and real estate investment company.

“There’s only one percent… And I know everybody in this room thinks they gonna play the national football league,” Summer says to the team in a lecture hall. “There’s a lot of people who sat in those seats, way before you… Me being one of them, came here with aspirations to be the best person I could be, the best football player that I could be, but there are a lot of guys who left here as professionals…”

Summers says of the numerous South Carolina State football players who didn’t become pro football players but found themselves as professionals in other areas of life after getting their degree from South Carolina State.

“I’m gonna be honest with you for about 5 or 10 more minutes,” Summers continues. “I’m a millionaire and football didn’t make me a millionaire, I didn’t make millions of dollars playing football, but I came here to South Carolina State. I took advantage of the opportunity that it gave me that used to get a degree.”

Summers graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Agribusiness in 1988 and is a 2020 South Carolina State University athletics Hall of Fame inductee. He football from 1984 to 1988 and was a free-agent signee with the Indianapolis Colts in 1988, so to say that Michael Summers has been where the current SCSU football roster is now is about as accurate a parallel as you’ll find.

SC STATE FOOTBALL – WE EDUCATE WEDNESDAY

Before he was the rapper known as Plies, he was Algernod “Nod” Washington, a star wide receiver at Fort Myers Senior High School where he was Homecoming King and valedictorian. After graduation, he attended Miami University where he played wide receiver from 1995 to 1997, then transferred to the University of Central Florida.

As a freshman in 1995, he had 9 receptions for 69 yards then followed it up with 25 receptions for 262 yards and 2 touchdowns. The next season, he had 5 receptions for 43 yards.

Plies may be a Grammy-nominated hip-hop artist but the message of going pro in a field other than football is something he can relate to, and now, so can millions of his followers who may not know about South Carolina State or the real-world mentorship that happens when you are a student-athlete at an HBCU.
