There’s a prevailing narrative in college athletics that equal investment should automatically mean equal treatment — regardless of outcomes, market interest, or sustainability. It’s a narrative rooted in good intentions but one that often ignores the economic and biological realities that shape how the public consumes sports. As someone who is leading an HBCU institution that proudly supports women’s athletics — including hiring the first woman Athletics Director in the 158-year history of Edward Waters University — I believe in women’s sports. And I believe in investing in them. But I also believe in honest, data-driven leadership.

At Edward Waters University, we’ve made historic strides. We’ve launched brand-new women’s athletic programs in golf, tennis, and soccer — all firsts for our HBCU institution. Women’s flag football is next on the horizon, and we’re building the infrastructure to support it. These aren’t symbolic gestures. They’re real investments backed by real commitment — and they reflect our belief that women deserve the opportunity to compete, develop, and win.

But belief in equity shouldn’t mean we ignore reality. The simple fact is that, to date, men’s collegiate athletics — particularly football and basketball — generate the lion’s share of revenue that funds not just men’s sports but also women’s programs, scholarships, facilities, and operations. This isn’t sexism — it’s economics.

Yes, biology plays a role. Men and women are built differently, and on average, men have greater physical explosiveness, which creates a different kind of spectator experience. Yes, culture also plays a role. Boys are encouraged to play sports from a young age. That’s changing — slowly — and should continue to evolve. But even in the most gender-progressive societies, men still participate in and consume sports at higher rates than women. That matters.

This doesn’t mean women’s sports shouldn’t be funded or promoted—quite the opposite. But it does mean we must think strategically, not sentimentally. Equal treatment doesn’t mean equal spending—it means providing the resources and support commensurate with each sport’s current and potential reach.

For example, women’s collegiate basketball is undeniably surging in popularity — and it has earned every bit of that spotlight through extraordinary talent, storytelling, and competitive excellence. The numbers don’t lie: record-breaking television ratings, sellout crowds, and a surge in mainstream media coverage are all clear indicators of a sport with real market traction. That’s not charity — that’s ROI. It’s time for the NCAA and its corporate partners to respond with real, sustained financial investment and to move decisively toward full parity in the women’s tournament experience — in facilities, marketing, media coverage, and fan engagement. Women’s college basketball student-athletes, their fans, and the stakeholders of the women’s game deserve a championship experience that reflects the quality of the product and the passion of its audience.

My passion for equity in women’s athletics is deeply tied to my broader commitment to justice and opportunity as the president of Edward Waters University — Florida’s first HBCU and a forerunner in access and social uplift. HBCU institutions like ours have always stood at the forefront of challenging inequity and expanding opportunity, often doing more with less. That legacy demands that we not only speak about fairness but that we lead by example. In the same way we’ve fought for access and dignity for Black students, we must also advocate for the full recognition and investment in women’s athletics — particularly for women of color who too often remain on the margins of both visibility and support.

That balance — between principled support and pragmatic stewardship — is where real leadership lives. I will continue to champion women’s athletics not just because it’s the right thing to do, but because I believe in their transformative power when given a real chance to flourish. We can support women’s sports with authenticity and intention without ignoring the economic realities that undergird the business of high-level collegiate and professional athletics.

True equity is not about ignoring differences — it’s about honoring excellence wherever it rises and ensuring that when women show the world they can compete, we’re not the ones standing in the way. The time for performative action is over. The time for real investment — grounded in data, driven by results, and fueled by belief — is now.

SIAC coaches and sports information directors voted on the players selected for each team as well as the league’s Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, Newcomer of the Year, Freshman of the Year and Coach of the Year.

Miles College guard Alvin Miles was named the SIAC Player of the Year while Golden Bears head coach Fred Watson earned Coach of the Year honors. Fort Valley State forward Hassane Diallo earned Defensive Player of the Year honors, Lane guard Elijah Greer Dawson received Newcomer of the Year, Edward Waters forward Myles Hosten notched Freshman of the Year honors while Morehouse guard Cedric Taylor III earned Elite 16 honors.

Miles, a native of Memphis, Tenn., was one of the SIAC’s top 10 scorers this season, averaging 15.9 points per game (10th in the conference). He became the first player in program to earn the league’s top player award since Avery Brown accomplished the feat in 2020. Miles was the only SIAC player this season to score 400 points, grab 100 rebounds and notch 100 assists. He finished with double-figure production in 22 of the Golden Bears’ 26 contests while recording seven games of 20 or more points.

Diallo registered 177 rebounds with 120 coming on the defensive side of the ball in 28 games this season. He also finished second in the league in blocked shots (42) while registering 22 steals and averaging 10.5 points per contest.

Dawson averaged 16.8 points while shooting 44.4% from the field, dishing 3.0 assists and connecting on 76.9% from the free throw line per game in 18 contests this season. Beyond his scoring, Dawson averaged 4.1 rebounds per game while tallying a total of 39 steals and six blocks on defense.

Hosten averaged 8.0 points while shooting 38.8% from the floor and notched 4.8 rebounds in 13 games this season.

Watson registered his third Coach of the Year honors at Miles and the ninth of his career. He led Miles to a SIAC-best 23-3 mark that includes a 19-1 record in conference play and a perfect 12-0 mark at home, the Golden Bears best record inside Knox-Windham Gymnasium in program history.

JACKSONVILLE, FLA.  – USTA Florida awarded its first-ever HBCU Tennis Program Grant to Edward Waters University (EWU), marking a significant milestone in both the university’s and USTA Florida’s history.  

Held at the Edward Waters University Tennis Complex on October 7, 2024, this event signified the official launch of USTA Florida’s HBCU Tennis Program Grant, which aims to provide critical funding to HBCU institutions in Florida. 

The grant, worth $100,000, will help EWU, the first Historically Black College in the state, further develop its tennis program, which played in its inaugural tennis season at the beginning of 2024. 

Laura Bowen, Executive Director of USTA Florida, highlighted the significance of the grant and USTA Florida’s commitment to HBCUs and the Black tennis community. “This grant is more than just money,” she said. “Today marks an important shift in USTA Florida’s history of service to our state and to the beautiful sport of tennis.” 

This grant is designed for immediate impact. EWU can apply the funds toward various needs, including court improvements, tennis equipment, scholarships for Florida students, and additional coach education. Bowen emphasized that this flexibility was shaped by conversations with Dr. Ivana Rich, Associate Vice President and Director of Athletics at EWU, and other HBCU leaders in Florida. 

Dr. Rich shared her vision for the growth of the university’s tennis program and the opportunities it will create for student-athletes. “We are deeply grateful to USTA Florida for awarding Edward Waters University this HBCU College Tennis Program Grant,” she said. “It represents a significant step forward for our newly established women’s tennis program and reinforces our commitment to providing quality athletic opportunities for our student-athletes. This support will enable us to enhance our tennis offerings, provide an exceptional experience for our student-athletes and engage more of our community in the sport of tennis.” 

The team is looking forward to putting the grant to use and Head Coach Marc Atkinson is excited to see the impact of the grant. “This HBCU Tennis grant will have a transformative effect on our tennis program and the student-athletes it serves,” he said. “With this grant, we will be able to purchase new equipment and training tools for our players, offer additional scholarships to attract talented student-athletes, and enhance our travel budget to compete in more tournaments.” 

Many of the players expressed their thanks to USTA Florida and are ready to get to work as the 2025 season approaches. “These improvements will not only benefit our current tennis players but will also help us attract and develop future talent, elevating the entire program to new heights,” Coach Atkinson added. 

Bowen closed out the event restating USTA Florida’s commitment to growing HBCUs and supporting EWU in any way possible. “This grant comes with a promise that we will continue to be your partner in growing this program for as long as it is in existence. We will stay connected with you, and together, we will develop more ways to support Edward Waters tennis.”

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (October 7, 2024) – Jacksonville, FL HBCU Edward Waters University is pleased to announce its selection as the host for two prestigious NCAA Division II Championships. The university will hold the 2027 NCAA Division II Women’s Volleyball Championship, as well as the 2028 NCAA Division II Men’s & Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Additionally, the University of North Florida will host the 2027 NCAA Division I Men’s & Women’s Outdoor Track & Field First Round Championships.

This marks a historic milestone for Jacksonville and its only HBCU, which will host these Division II collegiate tournaments for the first time. The city has never previously hosted three distinct championships within a two-year period. Edward Waters University’s recent transition to Division II status has enabled Jacksonville to bid for these national championships, in collaboration with the University of North Florida.

“We are thrilled that Jacksonville has been awarded these tournaments and eagerly anticipate welcoming fans, friends, and family to the events,” stated Michael Corrigan, President and CEO of Visit Jacksonville and President of the Jacksonville Sports Foundation. “The successful collaboration among Visit Jacksonville, the Jacksonville Sports Foundation, the Jacksonville City Council, the City of Jacksonville Office of Sports and Entertainment, Edward Waters University, Jacksonville University, and the University of North Florida has made this achievement possible. Jacksonville, Fla., — Florida HBCU Edward Waters University is excited to announce the appointment of Devin Wilson as the Wide Receivers Coach and Tee Mitchell as the Safeties/Defensive Pass Game Coordinator for the university’s football program.
 
Devin Wilson brings a wealth of coaching experience to the Edward Waters University Program. Wilson’s passion for football and dedication to excellence started during his college years at fellow HBCU Tennessee State University, where he was a four-year starter from 2009 to 2013. He played a crucial role in winning the Black College (HBCU) National Championship and securing a spot in the FCS playoffs. Wilson was also selected as a team captain and honored with the National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete Award. He graduated from Tennessee State University with a bachelor’s degree in Human Performance and Sport Science.
 
After his HBCU football career, his coaching journey began in Jacksonville at Andrew Jackson High School, where he played a crucial role in revitalizing the football program. As the Offensive Coordinator and wide receiver coach, Wilson led the team to their first winning season in over a decade and secured their first district championship in 20 years. His efforts in developing players earned them several post-season honors. Wilson continued his coaching success at Oakleaf High School, where he maintained his track record of developing players who achieved post-season honors.
 
Prior to his coaching career, Devin Wilson had a distinguished 9-year professional career split between the Canadian Football League and the Arena Football League. In Jacksonville, he quickly became a fan favorite as a key player for the Jacksonville Sharks, helping the team secure three Arena League championships. Wilson holds impressive career statistics, amassing 413 receptions, 5,347 yards, and 116 touchdowns. His outstanding performance earned him All-League honors five times, and he currently holds National Arena League records for most career catches, receiving yards, and touchdowns.
 
Tee Mitchell, a native of Jacksonville, Florida, is a rising star in the coaching ranks. Mitchell holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration/Marketing from Mercer University, where he played for the Mercer University Football Team from 2014 to 2019. As a Running Back and Special Teams player, Mitchell made a significant impact on the field. He played under the guidance of Head Coach Bobby Lamb and Running Backs Coach Carter Barfield. Mitchell’s impressive performance led him to become the All-Time Leading Rusher in Mercer History, with 2,660 yards, and the All-Time All-Purpose Leader, with 3,432 yards. He was also honored as a 2015 Capital One Academic All-America First Team member, the first in program history. Mitchell’s exceptional skills and dedication earned him three All-SoCon selections.

 
Mitchell’s coaching journey began in 2019 with the Jacksonville Jaguars, where he worked as a Scouting Associate. In this role, he assisted with free-agent workouts and provided advance reports on special units. Mitchell also evaluated and graded the tight end group during training camp, gaining valuable insight and experience that he will bring to the DII HBCU in Jacksonville, FL.
 
Mitchell’s most recent role was with the Jacksonville Jaguars, where he served as a Defensive Quality Control from 2022 to 2023 under the leadership of Doug Pederson. In 2022, Mitchell worked directly with the Defensive Backs and, in 2023, with the Outside Linebackers. He played a vital role in creating playbooks, game planning, practice schedules, and scripts. Mitchell also worked closely with the secondary during meetings and practices, assisting in player development and performance. He contributed to a defense that achieved remarkable success, finishing first in the NFL in Points Off of Turnovers, fourth in Takeaways (27), and second in Scoring Defense (4 TD). Mitchell’s efforts helped players like Safety Rayshawn Jenkins and Cornerback Tyson Campbell excel, earning accolades and recognition for their outstanding performances. The team also became AFC South Champions during Mitchell’s tenure with the Jaguars organization.
 
Prior to the Jaguars, Mitchell worked as an Offensive Analyst with Duke University in 2021, where he worked with Wide Receivers. Mitchell also took on responsibilities of managing scout team operations and meetings and assisting with coverages, defensive personnel, and opponent tendencies on game days. His contributions led to the success of players like Jake Bobo, who earned All-ACC 3rd Team honors and is currently an NFL Wide Receiver for the Seattle Seahawks.
 
Before his time with the Jaguars and Duke University, Tee Mitchell served as the Defensive Backs Coach for West Georgia in 2020 under the guidance of David Dean. He coached nickelbacks, participated in game planning and installation, and conducted meetings. Mitchell played a crucial role in the development of players like Deontae Overstreet, who achieved All Gulf South Conference 1st Team and First Team D2CCA All-Region honors. Mitchell’s recruitment efforts covered areas such as the Atlanta Area (Cobb, Gwinnett, Fulton County), West Georgia, and East Alabama.
 
Edward Waters University head coach Toriano Morgan explained, “The addition of Devin Wilson and Tee Mitchell to the coaching staff will greatly enhance the football program. Their expertise, experience, and dedication to player development will contribute to the success of the team on and off the field.”

To earn full member status, the Columbia, SC-based HBCU had to serve a four-year process including an exploratory year and three years in the provisional member process. 

“We are on the brink of a thrilling era in Allen’s Athletics history,” said Allen University Director of Athletics Jasher Cox. “Throughout the reclassification process, the university has demonstrated excellence at every turn. I am incredibly proud of the past three years and the hard work that has brought us to this moment. An exhilarating chapter now begins as we are officially eligible for postseason play and championships.”

The HBCU pair will join Emory & Henry University and Westmont College as new members.

Jacksonville, FL — Governor Ron DeSantis recently signed ‘Focus on Florida’s Future’ Budget for the Fiscal Year 2024-2025. The comprehensive state budget, totaling $116.5 billion, includes pivotal support for several key initiatives at HBCU Edward Waters University (EWU), reinforcing the university’s commitment to academic excellence and student success.

The budget, reflecting a decrease in overall state spending from the previous year, features the Governor’s line-item vetoes amounting to $949,611,399. Despite these reductions, the Jacksonville, FL HBCU has been fortunate to secure substantial funding for several of its critical projects, amounting to a total of $12,433,026. This represents the highest-ever single-year state legislative allocation to EWU in its history.

Key allocations include $6,429,526 for Access, Retention, and Graduation focused programs to enhance student retention and access for underserved communities, $1,000,000 for the Edward Waters Criminal Justice Institute to prepare students for careers in criminal justice and forensic science, $3,500 per student through the Edward Waters Effective Access to Student Education (EASE) program to alleviate financial burdens, and a $5,000,000 allocation to improve campus security infrastructure in wake of the tragic racially motivated shooting that took the lives of citizens in the New Town community in the shadow of the Edward Waters campus last August.

“We are profoundly grateful to Governor DeSantis and the Florida Legislature for their unwavering support and recognition of the vital role Edward Waters University plays in the higher education landscape. These funds will significantly bolster our efforts to provide exceptional educational opportunities, support student retention, and enhance campus safety,” said Dr. A. Zachary Faison, Jr., President and CEO of Edward Waters University. “I extend my heartfelt thanks to our distinguished alumna, Senator Tracie Davis, for her unwavering advocacy and leadership in championing this cause. The allocations in this year’s ‘Focus on Florida’s Future’ budget will allow Edward Waters University to continue its mission of fostering intellectual, personal, and professional growth in our students, preparing them to be influential leaders in their communities and beyond.

Jacksonville, The country will be well acquainted with Edward Waters football during the 2024 campaign as head coach Toriano Morgan and the Tigers will be featured on various broadcasting networks.

The Tiger’s first contest of the season on August 31st on the road in Atlanta against Morehouse will be shown on ESPN+. EWU’s lone Thursday night contest on the road against defending SIAC champion Benedict will be on ESPNU on September 19th. Both EWU’s October 5th home contest against Fort Valley State and the November 9th Homecoming/AME Football Classic matchup against rival Allen will both be aired on ESPN+.

Edward Waters University assistant track & field/cross country coach Marla Lindsay has been selected to be a coach at the upcoming US Olympic Track & Field Team Trials. The trials will take place June 21-30 at Historic Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon.

Lindsay received this prestigious honor thanks to one of the 2024 National Championship Mentorship Grants from USA Track & Field. Lindsay will be a part of the coaching staff of the multi-events of decathlon, heptathlon, and pentathlon.

Before coming to the D2 HBCU, Lindsay spent two seasons as an assistant coach at NCAA Division III Hollins University in Roanoke VA. At Hollins, Lindsay help produce several school record performances, while also mentoring several Old Dominion Athletic Conference top performers. 

A native of Beaufort, North Carolina, native, Lindsay starred at East Carteret High School and Western Carolina University as a sprinter and jumper. She earned East Carteret’s 1995 Athlete of the Year Award and represented the school at four NCHSAA championships. She is a 2020 inductee into East Carteret High School Hall of Fame.  The 1993 team captured the 2-A state title. Her efforts earned an athletic scholarship to NCAA Division I Western Carolina where she was a part of three Southern Conference titles in for the Catamounts. 

She graduated from Western Carolina in 2000 with a bachelor of fine arts in graphic design and has completed coursework towards a master’s in computer science from UNC Greensboro. Lindsay previously completed a stint as a mentor at the 2022 the USATF Outdoor Nationals in Eugene, Oregon.

Jacksonville, Florida- Edward Waters University Associate Vice President/Director of Intercollegiate Athletics, Dr. Ivana Rich has announced Eric Jackson, Jr. as the new women’s basketball head coach. Jackson comes to Edward Waters, an HBCU in Jacksonville, Florida after leading the women’s basketball program at Rust College to the most successful era in their program’s history.

In seven seasons in charge at the NAIA, HBCU program based in Holly Springs, Mississippi, Jackson led the Lady Bearcats to a 148-43 mark, four straight Gulf Coast Athletic Conference (GCAC) Regular Season Championships, three straight GCAC Tournament Titles, including the 2023-24 conference title, and four consecutive appearances at the NAIA Women’s Basketball Tournament. While at Rust, Jackson mentored 2 NAIA All-Americans, 5 All-Conference players, the 2019 GCAC Freshman of the Year, and the 2020 GCAC Player of the Year. Jackson has also received four GCAC Women’s Basketball Coach of the Year accolades. He is also the all-time leader in head coach in the history of Rust College Women’s Basketball. Following the 2024 season, Jackson was named to the “Achieving Coaching Excellence Honor Roll”, as one of the only HBCU coaches to join other stellar head coaches such as ACC Champion Niele Ivey at Notre Dame, and 2024 NCAA Champion Dawn Staley at South Carolina.

Jackson is no stranger to Jacksonville, prior to returning to Rust College, Jackson spent a 2-year stint in the high school ranks coaching Varsity girls’ basketball at Westside High School. During his tenure at Westside, Jackson improved the team from a 2-20 record to a 12-10 in his first year with the same roster as the year before. Westside finished 2nd in their district and made the State Playoffs for the first time in 20 years. The following year, Jackson led Westside to a 20-5 record and brought home the school’s first district championship.

Before his stop at Westside, Eric Jackson, Jr. spent 3 years at Concordia College-Alabama in Selma, AL. In three years, Jackson finished with a record of 59-26, with a record of 13-11 in his first season in 2013. The following season, Concordia finished with a record of 20-11 and won the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) Division I National Championship. The 2014 National Championship Team was also inducted into the USCAA Hall of Fame for winning the championship as the 8th and final seed of the Tournament. During his final season at Concordia, Jackson finished 26-4 and broke school and USCAA national records with the most consecutive wins with 26. Additionally, Jackson was the first recipient of the USCAA Women’s Coach of the Year Award. The Lady Hornets also finished ranked number 1 in the National Coach’s Poll the entire year and finished the year honoring 3 first-team All-Americans and the USCAA National Player of the Year.

Coach Jackson was raised in Holly Springs, Mississippi by way of Paterson, New Jersey. He was a part of the back-to-back (2003-2005) Boys Basketball State Championship teams at Holly Springs High School. Jackson is a graduate of Rust College where he received his Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics. He is the oldest of 3 children to Eric Sr. and Shelley Jackson and is currently married to Rasheedah Jackson.

Albany, Georgia-Senior right fielder Ferante Cowart’s grand slam in the bottom half of the eighth inning sparked #3 seed Edward Waters to a 10-5 come-from-behind victory over #4 seed Savannah State, capturing the program’s first SIAC Baseball Championship in history in the Championship Round of the 2024 Cricket SIAC Baseball Championship, Sunday afternoon at the Albany State West Campus Baseball Complex.

With Savannah State (31-15, 21-12 SIAC) earlier bouncing #1 seed, host school, and regular season champion Albany State in an Elimination Game, SSU advanced to face their I-95 rivals in a Championship Round which would need to see them beat Edward Waters twice to win the title.

Savannah State raced out to an early lead in the top of the second on an RBI single, and added one more in the top of the third thanks to an RBI groundout to take a 2-0 advantage. Edward Waters (31-18, 21-11 SIAC) got on the board in the bottom of the third on Hugo Schoening’s two-RBI single down the right field line which tied the festivities up at 2-2.

SSU would surge ahead in the top of the fifth on an RBI sacrifice fly, but EWU would once again have a response in the bottom of the sixth thanks to Leonel Garcia’s RBI single to tie the game once again at 3-3. Savannah State took the advantage again in the top of the seventh inning courtesy of two RBI singles to nudge ahead at 5-3.

The Edward Waters bats were stymied for much of the contest, but the offensive floodgates opened in a major way in the bottom of the eighth inning. Torry Jones earned a pinch hit RBI on a bases loaded walk to bring the Tigers within a run at 5-4. Erickson Matos also earned an unconventional RBI after being hit by a pitch with bases loaded to tie the contest at 5-5.  Then with one out in the inning, Cowart sent a pitch over the left center field wall for a grand slam to give EWU a 9-5 lead. John Nobles would later add an insurance run on an RBI fielder’s choice that gave EWU a 10-5 lead.

Freshman Elvin Polanco was then called to pitch the top of the ninth and was able to engineer the final three outs needed to give Edward Waters their first conference title since the 2015 Gulf Coast Athletic Conference regular season championship and first postseason conference title since the 2011 Association of Independent Institutions championship.

Anthony Roman would lead Edward Waters at the dish, going 2-for-3 with a run scored, but Cowart’s grand slam would lead EWU in RBI’s with four. The win on the mound would go to Polanco who came on in relief, allowing three hits and striking out one. Starter Austin James went 5.0 innings, scattering seven hits, allowing three earned runs, two walks, and struck out two.

Due to EWU being in the final year of their three-year transition to the NCAA from the NAIA, Savannah State will earn the SIAC’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Baseball Tournament. Edward Waters will next turn their attentions to the 2024 Tyson Foods Black College World Series which will take place May 8th-11th at Riverwalk Stadium in Montgomery, Alabama.

In 2018, the board of trustees of Edward Waters College made a bold move.  They unanimously chose a 37-year-old to lead the school.  While young in age, his experience was just what the doctor ordered for the small AME school on the north side of Jacksonville, Fla. New president Dr. A. Zachary Faison, Jr. came in with experience in the hot key issues for HBCUs which are retention and fundraising.

His career is littered with experience from HBCUs, with varied levels of involvement.  He is a graduate of Albany State University, where he attained his undergraduate degree.  He is also a graduate of the University of Georgia where he earned his juris doctorate.  From there he became board certified in the state of Georgia.

Faison has a vast array of experience at HBCUs

His leadership journey started at Mississippi Valley State University, as Chief of Staff and later Vice President for Institutional Advancement and then to Virginia Union University as Vice President for Enrollment Management and Student Affairs, and finally to Tuskegee as General Counsel and Vice President for External Affairs before being named President at Edward Waters in 2018.

He came to Edward Waters with a vision…to elevate the university through a combination of solid academic processes and athletics success.

“When we came to the institution in 2018, we began to chart our path comprehensively as an institution,” said Faison.  “From our perspective and conversations with our board and community, we felt we really had a potential niche in utilizing athletics to grow the brand of our institution to increase enrollment; using those revenues to help launch additional academic programs and grow the overall depth and breadth of the institution.”

EWU moved from NAIA to NCAA D-II in 2021

Things began to change in short order.  Led by Faison, Edward Waters would announce in 2021 that EWU was provisionally moving up to NCAA D-II in athletics.  It was the first time in the 155-year history of the school that it had participated at the NCAA level.  On the same day of the public announcement, it was revealed that the Tigers would rejoin the SIAC.  They were members previously in the conference from 1930-1935, before the conference migrated to D-II status in the NCAA.

In a grand announcement, the purple and orange had regained relevance on a national scale like never before.  Not discounting any of the successes of the school previously, but this was a major step into growth for both the athletic department and the university.

Long seen as the little school in Jacksonville, it began to stretch its wings and tiers began to be climbed.  A major renovation to the school’s on-campus football facility was a big piece of the turning point.  The turf field, new grandstands, new press box, and pristine president’s box where he entertains donors during football games grew an exciting game day environment.

In 2021, Faison made the choice to bring in Toriano Morgan to lead the Tiger football team.  Morgan would add well-known veteran coach Brian Jenkins to his staff as offensive coordinator.  The team had struggled mightily even on the NAIA level.  Being reintroduced to the SIAC and introduced to Division-II was a smooth transition for Morgan and his staff.

Academics-wise, the university made a leap in 2021 as well.  Edward Waters College became Edward Waters University.  It was a galactic leap for the school.  Since then, the school’s popularity has skyrocketed.  EWU is now the fastest-growing HBCU in the state of Florida and one of the fastest growing in the country.

Edward Waters football has been steadily building

In 2021 the Tiger football team would finish at 4-7, going 3-7 in conference play.  In 2022 the team saw marginal improvement and ended the season at 5-6, but more importantly 4-4 in SIAC play.  This was the indicator that the program was moving forward.  In 2023, the team had its first winning season in quite some time, going 6-4 for the season and 5-3 in SIAC play.  The two signature wins for the team in 2023 were the upset of Tuskegee at “The Shed” for its homecoming and an exciting last-play defeat of eventual SIAC runners-up Albany State in Jacksonville.

2024 could be a big year for EWU as its three-year probationary status as a member of the SIAC is to be evaluated.  It could result in the dropping of the provisional membership, adding them as a fully-authorized member in one of the big four HBCU conferences.  With the success of the programs and the growth in the image of the school, barring something unforeseen they are expected to be fully admitted.

Not only are the football facilities improving, the school has made a marked investment into its student-athletes.  Additionally, Faison is exceptionally proud of his director of athletics, whom he credits with forging the department forward.  

“I truly believe there has to be a symbiotic synergy between the president and the athletic director.  I selfishly believe I have the best associate vice president and director of athletics in the country here in Dr. Ivana Rich.  The job that she has done to come in and continue this vision…she has come and not only fit in, but taken things to a higher level,” Faison said.

The facilities upgrades at the school include a dedicated student-athlete academic center and a health and wellness center that has expanded the weight room, medical treatment apparatus, and contains a nutrition center.  Edward Waters is certainly in unchartered territory at the time and judging from Faison’s vision and drive, this is just the beginning.

“As we looked around geographically, we’re sitting right in the footprint within a five-hour radius of 90-percent of the institutions that are in the SIAC,” Faison said.  “We were in a good conference in the GCAC, but you didn’t get the same kind of HBCU experience that our students wanted, our alumni wanted, our city wanted.  It made a lot of sense for us, when you’ve got Savannah (GA) an hour-and-a-half away…we needed to make sure that our brand became synonymous with the brands of those institutions (in the SIAC).”

Jacksonville, Florida-The Edward Waters football squad unveiled their 2024 schedule on Friday afternoon. After finishing the 2023 season with a 6-4 overall mark, the program’s best record since 2004, and a 5-3 mark against SIAC competition, head coach Toriano Morgan the Tigers prepare to make an even bigger impact in 2024. The 2024 season will see Edward Waters become full members of the SIAC and NCAA Division II after their three-year mandated transitional period after moving from the NAIA, thus making the program not only eligible for the conference championship but also eligible to compete for an NCAA Division II National Championship.

The 2024 season will see 10 contests, eight against SIAC competition and two against non-conference opponents. Tiger fans will have an opportunity to see the team play four times inside the confines of Glover Community Field & Stadium, while six contests will be away from Jacksonville.

After a week one bye on August 31st, the Tigers will open the season on a three-game road trip. On Saturday, September 7th the Tigers head down to Miami Gardens to battle longtime rival Florida Memorial in the 4th Annual Big Cat Classic. The Tigers look to get back on the winning side in this rivalry after dropping the last two straight contests against the Lions, including last season’s 38-21 loss in Jacksonville.

The Tigers then will head to Lorman, Mississippi to face Alcorn State on September 14th at Spinks-Casem Stadium. This will be the second all-time meeting between the Tigers and Braves since the 2013 season opener when a then Brad Bernard coached Edward Waters squad fell to ASU 63-13.

The road trip concludes on September 21st when the Purple & Orange open SIAC play against two-time and defending conference champion, Benedict in Columbia, South Carolina. Since joining the SIAC, Benedict has been a thorn in the sides of Edward Waters, winning the first two meetings between the two teams in 2021, and last season’s 34-0 home loss.

Edward Waters opens the home portion of their schedule on September 28th as they will welcome the Golden Tigers of Tuskegee University to “The Jungle”. Last season’s meeting between the two teams had one of the best and most memorable finishes of the 2023 HBCU and college football season, as Edward Waters, on a hail mary on the final play of the game, knocked off Tuskegee on their Homecoming 41-38.

October opens with a home matchup against the Wildcats of Fort Valley State on the 5th. EWU came up just short last season with a 34-31 loss to FVSU in Georgia.

The Tigers next head up I-75 to Atlanta to battle the new-look Maroon Tigers of Morehouse College on October 12th. As of late, Edward Waters has had the better of Morehouse, winning the last three meetings, including a dominant 44-13 win last season at home.

On October 19th, the Tigers meet up with I-95 rival Savannah State for a gridiron battle in Jacksonville, Edward Waters snapped a five-game losing skid in 2023, defeating SSU 26-25 in Savannah.

EWU begins a two-game road trip on October 26th in Albany, Georgia to battle the Golden Rams of Albany State. The Purple & Orange had another last second victory against ASU last season, scoring the go-ahead touchdown with eight seconds left in the fourth quarter to earn their first victory over the Golden Rams since 1967.

The longest road trip of the season takes place on November 2nd, when EWU heads to Jackson, Tennessee to face the Dragons of Lane College. Edward Waters was able to celebrate a Homecoming victory, holding off the Dragons 37-30 last year.

The 2024 regular season concludes on November 9th as Edward Waters celebrates Homecoming against rival Allen University in the AME Football Classic. Last season, the “Bishop’s Trophy” went to the Yellow Jackets for the first time since 1959 after EWU’s 59-21 loss in Columbia.

Every coach in the country knows the importance of Florida talent and the sidelines are chock full of scouts. That includes HBCU coaches, and they made their way to check out the athletes.  Representatives from FAMU, Alabama A&M and Edward Waters were all keeping a close eye on the talent thus.  More schools were expected the for weekend games where the larger class schools sought their titles at Bragg Stadium.  In addition, University of West Florida head coach Kaleb Nobles returned to Ken Riley Field for the first time since his University of West Florida Argonauts faced the Rattlers on Sept. 16, falling 31-10.

Fresh off his three-year extension at Edward Waters University, head coach Toriano Morgan and offensive coordinator Brian Jenkins took in the action.  Morgan was pleased to see all the talent in one place.

“Oh, man, it’s a great collection of talent.  This is like the buffet and the combination of high school football here,” Morgan said.  “We’re just here out, evaluating some talent.  We got our eyes on some guys and it’s really some other guys that are just jumping off the radar at us.  So it’s just been a good experience thus far this year.”

FAMU Director of Recruiting Devin Rispress, labeled as one of 2023’s best recruiters,  was all eyes as well as a contingency of FAMU coaches.  While no formal contact is allowed with players as the state championship venue is considered a neutral site, it was still convenient for FAMU’s coaches to step out of their offices and take in some of the best talent in the entire state.

Among the attention grabbers on Thursday was Mainland High School defensive end LJ McCray.  McCray was not hard to find.  At 6’6 and 265 lbs., he towered over both teammates and opponents.  Mainland won the Class 3S championship defeating the St. Augustine Yellowjackets.  Smartly, St. Augustine took no chances running on McCray’s side.  Virtually every play was railroaded away from the menacing presence.

McCray is a University of Florida commit, but we know how recruiting works in today’s landscape.  Until a kid signs, there’s not much placed on their early commitments.

Mainland has a strong HBCU connection.  Head coach Travis Roland is a former Bethune-Cookman star.  There are six former Bethune-Cookman players on the coaching staff.  Roland is known for wearing a B-CU t-shirt under his Mainland polo.

Jackson State leads the SWAC with nearly 30k. That’s an impressive number, but it is a significant drop from its 2022 number. Norfolk State got a slight bump as it led the MEAC. North Carolina A&T got another sellout it’s first season in the CAA.

Edward Waters came out of the gates strong, capping off an eight play, 72 yard drive with a 25-yard touchdown to Johnny Jones on their opening drive to take a 7-0 lead. From there, Albany State took control, responding with an opening drive TD of their own to tie things up at 7-7 with 10:12 remaining in the 1st quarter. Things got tough for the Tigers on their ensuing drive as after a three-and-out, a bad snap that went over punter Irving Friedman’s head, went out of the back of the end zone giving the visitors a 9-7 lead with 8:27 remaining. After the EWU free kick, Albany State extended their lead thanks to a three-yard rushing TD to take a 15-7 advantage. The Golden Rams added a two-point conversion to push the lead to 10 at 17-7. The Golden Rams added another touchdown to their tally with another run of 17 yards and pushed their advantage to three scores at 24-7 with 9:46 remaining in the 2nd quarter. 

The Tigers were finally able to break the Albany State scoring spree with 1:00 remaining before halftime when Johnny Jones hauled in his second TD of the game, this one from four yards out to cut the deficit back to 10 at the half at 24-14.

The EWU defensive unit was the unsung hero of the contest as after conceding 24 first half points to Albany State, Edward Waters only gave up three points in the second half. Edward Waters cut the lead down to seven at the 1:40 mark of the third quarter, thanks to a 22-yard field goal from Friedman, making it a 24-17 ballgame heading to another frenetic fourth quarter finish. The Golden Rams cashed in with an 18-yard field goal to push the lead back to 10 at 27-17. From there, it was all Purple & Orange as Russell capped off another long TD drive, this one spanning 85 yards on 11 plays with a four-yard TD from DeShaun Hugee to cut the deficit to three at 27-24. The Tiger defense was called into action once again, desperately needing to force a three-and-out from Albany State and put their red hot offense back on the field. EWU was able to rise to the occasion to get the football back to the offense with 2:06 remaining in the game. 

Edward Waters would need to go 84 yards to set up another thrilling victory. Russell and the offense drove down to the one yard line, and with :08 remaining, found Deven Thompson to give EWU a 31-27 lead. Albany State could only try a series of laterals on the ensuing kickoff, only for it to fail and Edward Waters would have their second straight thrilling finish and an upset of another SIAC “blue blood” program.

The Tigers finished the contest with 391 yards of total offense with 281 through the air and 110 on the ground. Albany State finished with 282 total yards, 185 rushing and 97 passing. With Jyron Russell’s effort tonight, he becomes the new modern era single season passing yards leader with 2,220 yards so far this season. He also eclipsed the single season passing TDs mark with his three passing touchdowns, giving him 18 passing TDs on the year. Both marks surpass former Edward Waters QB Dexter L. Davis who had 2,132 yards and 17 touchdowns during his senior season in 2004. Russell finished the contest 22-34 passing for 281 yards and three touchdowns. Nathan Rembert led the Tigers with four catches for 79 yards, while Jones finished with eight receptions for 77 yards and two touchdowns. Hugee was the Tigers’ leading ball carrier with 12 carries for 51 yards and a touchdown. Defensively, Widmyer Garçon turned in another tremendous tackling display with 13 tackles and one tackle for loss, while Ahmaud Jordan had 10 total tackles for the Tigers.

Edward Waters will hit the road for the final time in the 2023 regular season on Saturday, October 28th just outside of Columbia, South Carolina as they will face the Yellow Jackets of Allen University in the 4th annual AME Football Classic. Kickoff is slated for 2:00pm.

Tuskegee, Alabama- Conceding a go-ahead touchdown late in the fourth quarter, Edward Waters was left with just :25 to respond. Driving down to the Tuskegee 46-yard line with :02 remaining, Jyron Russell fired up a Hail Mary, which was answered by Arsiah McCorker, giving the Tigers a monumental 41-38 victory over the Golden Tigers on their Homecoming, Saturday afternoon at Cleve L. Abbott Memorial Alumni Stadium. The victory for the Tigers extends their winning streak to four in a row, gives them their first victory in four tries over Tuskegee, and gives the Golden Tigers their first conference loss of the season.

Edward Waters (4-3, 4-2 SIAC) had to withstand an early attack from Tuskegee (5-2, 4-1 SIAC) as the Golden Tigers scored on their first two drives of the contest. Tuskegee got into the scoring act quickly on their opening drive, on a three play, 60 yard drive that was capped off with a four-yard rushing TD to take an early 7-0 lead. After an Edward Waters three and out on their opening drive, the Golden Tigers doubled up their lead, thanks to a 28-yard rushing TD to give them a 14-0 advantage. The EWU offense stalled once again, forcing a punt to the Tuskegee 16-yard line. On the drive opener, Jaren Wilson knifed into the backfield, hitting the TU quarterback which caused a fumble that James Gary recovered in the end zone, giving the visitors their first points of the contest at 14-7. Back-to-back three and outs occurred for both squads, setting the Golden Tigers up with a 1st & 10 at the Tuskegee 33-yard line. The quarter closed with Jonathan Gregory recording his first interception of the season, putting the ball at EWU’s 34-yard line.

Quarter #2 saw the Purple & Orange drive down to the Tuskegee 36, where Russell, who appeared to be sacked, never went down and was able to break away for a 36-yard touchdown to knot the scoring up at 14-14. Tuskegee was able to drive down and kick a 31-yard field goal with :29 remaining in the half to take a 17-14 halftime lead.

The third quarter scoring was opened by Johntarrious Thomas, who capped off a five play, 91-yard drive with a one-yard rushing touchdown that gave Edward Waters its first lead of the game at 21-17 with 7:27 remaining. Tuskegee wasted no time, scoring on a 59-yard touchdown pass to quickly retake the lead at 24-21 with 6:19 remaining.

The frenetic fourth quarter scoring opened at the 6:34 mark, when Nathan Rembert hauled in a 13-yard TD reception on a WR pass from Yanez Rogers, allowing EWU to retake the lead at 28-24. On the ensuing kickoff, it appeared that Edward Waters recovered a Tuskegee fumble and would have the ball deep in Golden Tiger territory, but the official indicated that the returner was down prior to the ball being fumbled. Edward Waters was able to force a fumble on the Tuskegee running back on the first play from scrimmage, setting them up at the Golden Tiger 28-yard line. Taking two plays, DeShaun Hugee scored on a 21-yard rushing TD to give EWU their largest lead of the contest at 35-24 with 5:27 left. The Golden Tigers would not go quietly, especially on their Homecoming as they fired back immediately on a five-play, 63-yard drive, taking all of :54 and finishing with a seven-yard rushing TD to cut into the Tiger lead at 35-31 with 4:26 left. 

Edward Waters was charged with trying to bleed as much time on the clock to escape with victory, but were only able to take off 1:59, and punting the football back to TU with 2:21 remaining. With the ball placed at the Tuskegee 30-yard line, the Golden Tigers began a march of 10 plays and 70 yards which was topped off with an 11-yard, go ahead touchdown with :25 remaining, making it a 38-35 TU lead and setting up the penultimate drive. The Purple & Orange took over at their 35-yard line and got to work, ultimately driving to the Golden Tiger 46-yard line with :10 remaining. Russell’s first attempt a Hail Mary was broken up in the endzone, leaving just :02 remaining. The Golden Tigers went into a prevent defense, with their defenders standing within the TU 20-yard line looking to end the contest again with another pass breakup. On the Tigers’ final attempt, Russell heaved up a prayer toward the endzone as time expired, where McCorker was able to snatch the football away from a Golden Tiger defender, sending the EWU sideline into a frenzy, and giving Edward Waters its most enthralling victory since the program was reinstituted in 2001.

The Tigers offense took some time to get started, but was able to eclipse the 400 yard mark in total offense for the sixth time in seven contests, finishing 428 yards. As has been the case throughout the season, the bulk of the offense output came through the air, posting 354 yards passing, while 74 yards came on the ground. Russell finished his afternoon, going 17-31 passing for 341 yards and a touchdown. For the second straight contest, Nathan Rembert went over the 100-yard receiving mark, finishing with four catches for 123 yards and a touchdown, while Johnny Jones finished with seven snags for 58 yards. Defensively, Edward Waters was able to force four takeaways in the contest with three fumble recoveries and an interception, despite surrendering 461 yards of total offense. Jaren Wilson led the Tiger defense with six tackles, three tackles for loss, two sacks, and one forced fumble. Freshman LB Ahmarion Moultrie also had his best contest of his young EWU career with six tackles and one forced fumble while Alabama native Quintorio Powell and LB Jonathan Nesbit also recorded sacks. Jonathan Gregory also stepped in front of a pass his first INT of the season. 

The Tigers win also keeps them within one game of a top two spot in the SIAC and keeps them alive for a potential SIAC Championship Game berth. Edward Waters returns home next Saturday evening, October 21st for a 6:00pm kick against Albany State at the Nathaniel Glover Community Field and Stadium. The contest is designated as EWU’s Breast Cancer Awareness game and supporters are encouraged to were pink to show support of those in the fight against the disease.

The approval is based on a series of reports submitted by EWU to the NCAA, outlining the measures put in place during the transition and after a virtual site visit by an NCAA consulting group that met with EWU President and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. A. Zachary Faison, Jr., Associate Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics, Dr. Ivana M. Rich and, many other members of the University’s administration and athletics team.

“We were absolutely ecstatic to have learned earlier today that Edward Waters University (EWU) has been approved by the NCAA to move to our third and final year of the provisional membership process,” said President Faison.“I would also be remiss not to acknowledge the tremendous leadership and superlative work of EWU Associate Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics, Dr. Ivana Rich, and the collective EWU Athletics administration, coaches, student-athletes, our faculty athletics representative, and the entire academic community for their continuing collaborative diligence towards guiding our program through this historic transformational growth opportunity for the university.”

Year two for EWU saw the institution under full immersion into the NCAA Division II landscape in terms of governance, compliance, and of course, competitive schedule, competing as a full member of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC). The NCAA noted that Edward Waters continued to successfully measure proper progress towards degree checkmarks, as well as financial aid and admissions protocols, as well.

Additionally, during year two of transition, the EWU women’s volleyball team claimed the 2022 SIAC East Division Regular Season Championship and Tournament Runner Up, the men’s volleyball team completed an undefeated conference regular season, claiming the 2023 SIAC Regular Season and Tournament Championships, and the Lady Tiger softball team won the 2023 SIAC East Division and Tournament Championships.“

We are so appreciative and forever grateful to the NCAA for their assistance and support enabling us to advance to the third year of provisional membership,” stated Dr. Rich. “Today is such a great day for EWU Athletics, made possible by the invaluable support from Strategic Edge Athletic Consulting and our campus partners.”

The program is looking forward to provisional year three in more ways the one. 

Year three will see EWU Athletics’ staffers attending the NCAA Convention as well as Regional Rules seminars and a follow-up visit by Strategic Edge Athletic Consulting to assess EWU’s progress during the provisional window. A successful transition through year three will result in Edward Waters becoming a full member of the NCAA Division II and grant them eligibility for national championship contention beginning in 2024-25.

Albany, Georgia-Former professional wrestling star and Hall of Famer Ric Flair had a saying that he made famous throughout his legendary run. He would often say “To Be The Man, You Have To Beat The Man.” That case rang true for Edward Waters in their first appearance at the Cricket SIAC Softball Championship Game locking up with multiple time and defending champion Tuskegee on Thursday afternoon at the Gordon Sports Complex. The Lady Tigers were able to serve notice that they were the new “Queens of the Diamond” in the SIAC, defeating the Golden Tigers 8-4, completing an undefeated run through the tournament, and capturing the SIAC title in their first full season competing as a member of the conference.

It was the second time that Edward Waters and Tuskegee met in the tournament, with the Lady Tigers taking an 8-4 victory in their second contest. Tuskegee went in the contest knowing that they had to defeat Edward Waters twice to keep their conference domination going.

TU plated the first two runs in the bottom half of the first inning to take an early 2-0 lead. After a scoreless second inning, the EWU offense got going in a big way in the top of the third. First team All-SIAC and Minority Softball Prospects All-Star Kylah Gardner connected on a two-run opposite field homer over the right field wall that tied things up at 2-2. The Lady Tigers plated two more runs in the top of the fourth on Laura Scott’s two-RBI single to give Edward Waters their first lead of the contest at 4-2.

The Golden Tigers cut the deficit to one in the bottom of the fifth, but Edward Waters pushed the lead back out to two in the top of the sixth on a Tuskegee throwing error that scored Jamiah Holmes to make it a 5-3 lead. The Lady Tigers added three critical insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning. Brooke Rice scored on another TU throwing error, Jade Mention scored on a wild pitch, and Scott hit another RBI single to give EWU an 8-3 advantage. Tuskegee was able to add a run in the bottom half of the seventh inning, but relief pitcher Milani Sablan was able to strike out the Golden Tigers’ final batter, giving Edward Waters their first softball conference championship since the 2015 Gulf Coast Athletic Conference title.

In her final collegiate contest of her career, Tiara Peters led the Lady Tigers at the plate going 2-for-2 with two walks in the matchup, while Brooke Rice finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Scott also had a multiple hit game for EWU going 2-for-5 with three RBI’s and a run scored.  The Lady Tigers got it done on the basepaths as well with seven stolen bases on eight attempts in the matchup. Alyssa Charter-Smith was phenomenal in the circle for Edward Waters, going 6.0 innings, allowing four earned runs, and striking out seven Golden Tigers in the matchup.

Kylah Gardner, Brooke Rice, and Jodasea Peterson were selected to the All-Tournament Team, while head coach Mike Ellison was named to Coach of the Tournament. Peterson was also named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player as well. 

Due to the fact that Edward Waters is in the second year of their three-year transition from the NAIA to NCAA Division II, the squad unfortunately will not be able to represent the conference in the NCAA Division II Softball Tournament and the conference’s automatic bid will go to Tuskegee. Despite that news, Edward Waters can hang their hat on the fact that they set a new program record for victories, ending the season with a 16-game winning streak, finishing the year with a remarkable 43-7 overall mark while also going 19-3 in SIAC play in the regular season. The Lady Tigers also claimed the SIAC Regular Season East Division Championship, the SIAC Tournament Championship, and will likely be unanimously chosen as the HBCU Softball National Champions for the second consecutive season.

Jacksonville, Florida-During the first day of THE PLAYERS Championship, Associate Vice President/Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Dr. Ivana Rich, Head Coach Kelly Allen, and the Edward Waters women’s golf program were the honored guests of Grant Thornton, sponsor of THE PLAYERS, recognizing the program as the Charity of the Day.

Grant Thornton, LLC, a Chicago-based audit, tax and advisory firm, hosted the team, took pictures, and allowed them to take in the first day of action at one of the PGA Tour’s premier events, known as golf’s unofficial “Fifth Major” and featuring some of the finest golfers in the world.

The Edward Waters women’s golf program is in the midst of their first season back as a varsity sport since May of 2021. A $50,000 grant from THE PLAYERS Championship allowed for the program to make its triumphant return to the Edward Waters athletics roster. Edward Waters is just the second HBCU in the state of Florida to have women’s golf as a varsity sport, along with Bethune-Cookman University.

“I am very appreciative of the PGA Tour, THE PLAYERS, Grant Thornton and all of the supporters of our program. Without it, would not be able to make it happen.” remarked Coach Allen.

No. 7 in the East Division, Edward Waters, started the 2023 TIAA SIAC Basketball Tournament presented by Cricket as they defeated the Spring Hill Badgers, 78-65. The Badgers held a 34-29 lead at halftime after shooting 44 percent (12-of-27) from the floor and 87 percent (7-of-8) from the free throw line. The Tigers mounted a second-half comeback to defeat the Badgers and secure their first postseason win in the SIAC. Beril Kabamba led scoring for the Badgers and posted his 10th double-double of the season with 24 points and 10 rebounds. Cahlib Edwards led EWU with 23 points. Cahlib Edwards led the offensive effort for the Tigers with 23 points and Jonathan Kanyanga collected four points and 12 rebounds to lead the Tigers to victory.

The No. 6 seed, Benedict College Tigers, built as much as a 13-point lead in the first half and then held off a late rally by Central State to take a 79-67 victory in the first round of the 2023 TIAA SIAC Basketball Tournament presented by Cricket, held at Savannah State University. The Tigers pulled away from a 17-16 game midway through the first half to build a 35-22 lead with 1:44 left in the half after a fast-break dunk by Malachi McCoy. Benedict had a 38-28 lead at the half. The Marauders cut the lead to 45-40 with 14:49 left in the game. The Tigers stormed back, and Brandon Smith gave Benedict a 65-52 lead on a 3-pointer with 7:23 remaining. 
 
The Marauders went on a 12-3 run to cut the lead to 68-64 with 3:33 left in the game. Asanti Price answered with a jumper, but Central State followed with a 3-pointer to make it 70-67 with 2:22 remaining. Benedict scored the final nine points of the game, getting a big 3-pointer by Dontavius King to start the run. King led Benedict, now 19-9 overall, with 15 points. Tim Moore added 11 points and Brandon Smith chipped in 10 points. For the Marauders, Steven Key II led their offensive effort with 23 points and Raevon Thomas added 11 points and eight rebounds.

SIAC Game 3 (Men)

No. 5 seed in the West, Kentucky State, relied on a consistent second half to lift them over the Allen Yellow Jackets for an 82-72 win inside Tiger Arena in their first matchup of the tournament. In the first ten minutes of the game, both teams tied three times, one by Kentucky State at 16:08 (6-6) and two by Allen at 13:30 (12-12) and 12:12 (14-14). Four points by Brandon Hill and a three-pointer by Elijiah Lockhart led to an 8-0 28-17 Kentucky State lead with 6:41 remaining in the first half.  The Thorobreds went on an 11-2 run going 100% (4-of-4) at the charity stripe in the first five of the last ten minutes in the first half.
 
Allen came to within one of the 36-35 lead at the end of the first half. Mosley found his rhythm and converted an and-one play that extended the Kentucky State lead to a six-point 46-60 at 12:52 in the second half. Jacobs hit a three-pointer to go 3-of-3 at long range for the night, giving his team a 72-59 lead. 
 
The final points of the night came on a dunk from Jacobs to secure an 82-72 victory. Chase Cook and Cameron Sembly of Allen Yellow Jackets led their scoring effort with 24 and 18 points, respectively. Kentucky State’s Shamon Mosley led the Thorobreds with 20 points and six rebounds and Montrell Jacobs added another 19 points. Andrews and Brooks each contributed nine rebounds in the win.

The announcement of Dr. Rich as the new AD is a historic one as she becomes the first African-American female to lead the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics in the over 155-year history of the institution.

“We engaged our student-athletes, coaches, alumni, athletic administration, as well as our faculty and staff to be a part of listening sessions to help guide us through this process,” remarked EWU President and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. A. Zachary Faison, Jr. “What really resonated with me the most is the feedback from our student-athletes and Dr. Rich connected with them in a phenomenally positive way.”

Dr. Rich comes to Edward Waters after a seven-year stint at NCAA Division I and Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference member Norfolk State University, serving in a number of roles within the Athletic Department. Most recently, Dr. Rich served as the Acting Athletic Director at NSU, while also serving as the Associate AD for external relations and Senior Woman Administrator, after joining the NSU student-athlete support staff in the spring of 2016. After initially serving the department’s learning specialist, Rich was promoted to assistant athletics director for academic support in the fall of 2017. She was later promoted again to associate AD for academic support prior to the start of the 2019-20 academic year and Associate AD for administration/SWA during fall of the 2021 – 2022 academic year.

She was also the department’s diversity and inclusion officer and deputy Title IX coordinator. In addition to serving as a member of the department’s senior leadership team, she has overseen the compliance and academic departments, mental health, Title IX education and programming,
marketing, and diversity and inclusion initiatives within NSU Athletics and the sports of baseball, bowling, and men’s and women’s tennis.

“I am excited to take this role here at Edward Waters, especially in the 50^thanniversary of Title IX to show that there is a need for women leaders and to show that we can do this and we can sit in that seat, I believe that is critically important,” remarked Dr. Rich.

Prior to her time at Norfolk State, Dr. Rich had a short stint at Howard University, where she served as athletic academic advisor for all 19 of HU’s sports. At NSU, Dr. Rich’s academic responsibilities included providing student-athletes with academic interventions and competencies in the areas of time management, study skills, writing development and reading development. She also coordinated academic support for the football, men’s basketball, men’s and women’s tennis, and men’s track & field programs.

In 2015, Dr. Rich served as athletic academic support counselor at Robert Morris University. Rich was responsible for coordinating academic support for all 15 of RMU’s sports.  She also served as an instructor the RMU first-year experience program. In addition to teaching FYSP, Rich taught the first-year experience study skills course designed for freshmen needing additional preparation for the college-level curriculum.  Rich also assisted with the early success program and other various programs offered through the RMU center for student success. 

Dr. Rich served a short stint as assistant volleyball coach at Coastal Carolina University. Rich helped lead the Lady Chanticleers to the 2014 Big South Championship and NCAA tournament appearance. Rich coached Big South Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year and three other All-Big South selections. 

Prior to CCU, Dr. Rich spent three seasons as head volleyball coach at Virginia State University. The Trojans were 10-17 overall and 8-8 in CIAA play during her first season in 2011. In just a short period of time, Rich set the groundwork for a successful program. In 2012, she led the Trojans to a 15-12 overall record and 13-3 conference record. The Trojans finished second in the CIAA Northern Division and had five players named to an All-CIAA team. Rich guided her team to 14 wins during the regular season, the most wins by a VSU volleyball team since the 2004 season.  Also in 2012, Dr. Rich was a recipient of the 2012 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) minority scholarship. 

In her final year at VSU (2013), she led the team to a 17-11 record and a 14-2 mark in conference play. The team captured a CIAA Northern Division title and had five All-CIAA selections including the 2013 CIAA Rookie of the Year. Rich was named the 2013 CIAA Coach of the Year during her final season at VSU. 

While at VSU, Dr. Rich was also a member of the department’s senior staff, serving as senior woman administrator and student-athlete affairs coordinator. In that role, she coordinated all life skills programming to include career development, leadership development, personal development and community service initiatives. Dr. Rich also served as the advisor to the

student-athlete advisory committee (SAAC). During her tenure at VSU, the department was awarded the NCAA Division II Community Engagement Award. 

Prior to VSU, Dr. Rich served as the volunteer assistant coach at Chowan University, helping lead the Hawks to a CIAA championship in 2010.

Dr. Rich played four years as a part of the Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) women’s volleyball program, playing both middle blocker and right-side hitter. As a senior captain, she help lead the Lady Rams to the first regular-season conference championship in school history. During her tenure at VCU, she was awarded All-CAA first team (2008), All-CAA second team (2009), CAA all-tournament team (2009) and COBRA Magazine All-National third team (2009). Rich also broke two school records, the VCU all-time blocks record and the single-season hitting percentage record.

Dr. Rich earned her bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from VCU, a master’s degree in sport management from Virginia State, a master’s degree in human services counseling from Liberty University, and a doctoral degree in curriculum and instruction/educational technology from the University of South Carolina. She is a graduate of the NCAA Women Coaches Academy and a member of the National Association of Academic Advisors for Athletics (N4A) and Women Leaders in College Sports. Rich is also a member of the 2022 NCAA Charles Whitcomb Leadership Institute and currently serves as a subcommittee lead of the N4A Ethnic Concerns Regional Outreach Committee.

Dr. Rich is a legacy member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and is also the proud mother of a six-year-old daughter, Melanie Rich.

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. | With five seconds left in the 2022 Big Cat Classic, Florida Memorial defensive back Darius Conley sealed the deal with an interception to capture a 39-34 victory over the Tigers of Edward Waters in a fantastic battle between the two Florida programs in the first HBCU classic of the year. Despite trailing 26-0 at halftime, the Tigers stormed back to score three touchdowns in the third quarter, but it wasn’t enough as FMU prevented a repeat from last season, this time holding on to victory by forcing a turnover on the final possession.

Florida Memorial head coach Bobby Rome earned his first career victory at FMU as his team stays undefeated in a thriller heading into next week’s big contest in Baton Rouge against Southern University.

“Going into the game we were really eager to get on the field and show some of the things we’ve been working on during the off-season and all through training camp,” said Rome. “I think we have an outstanding coaching staff and a great group of men who are willing to go out and work hard, because they put the work in. I was eager to see what we would do on Saturday, and I’m proud of the outcome. I’m proud of the way my team came out and performed, and hopefully we get another victory next weekend against Southern.”

Florida Memorial scored on its opening drive on a 10-play, 69 yard drive that resulted in a touchdown pass from quarterback Antoine Williams to wide out Markell Lee. After the Lions defense forced a three-and-out, Williams connected with Lee on an 18-yard touchdown pass on another 10-play drive, this time covering 64 yards.

Later in the quarter, FMU’s defense made a crucial play and caused a 4th down fumble when Jaiden Louis jarred the ball loose from Tigers running back David Johnson. FMU linebacker Joshua Mimms recovered the fumble to end the drive for the Tigers.

The Lions scored another two touchdowns in the second quarter; the first coming off a 62-yard touchdown pass from Williams to Christian Edger. FMU’s defense stepped up again and returned the ball to the offense, when Williams fumbled the ball inside the red zone which was recovered by EWU. However, FMU scored again later in the quarter on a 5-yard rushing touchdown from sophomore running back and Miami native George Young.

“Edward Waters is a good football program, so at halftime, I told them that we have to be ready to take that blow in the second half and be able to execute and finish when we need to, and we did that tonight,” Coach Rome explained. “I’m so proud of our young men; we found a way to win and we found a way to pull it out. That’s what good football teams do.”

Edward Waters came to play in the third quarter, scoring three touchdowns, cutting the deficit to 32-21 heading into the fourth quarter. The Tigers added an additional two touchdowns and looked to complete the comeback, but a late fourth-quarter 1-yard touchdown run from Young proved to be the game-winning score.

For the game, Williams was 25-for-36 with 382 passing yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions while Young rushed for a total of 134 yards and three touchdowns. On the defensive end, Mimms produced a team-high nine tackles while teammate and sophomore defensive lineman Antwan Davis produced a game-high four sacks. The Miami native also added eight tackles in the victory.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Following an extensive national search, Alabama A&M University and President Dr. Daniel Wims have announced Dr. Paul A. Bryant as the fourth permanent Director of Athletics in the program’s 24-year Division I history on Saturday, August 20.

“We slowed down what usually takes two weeks and took two months to make sure that we get someone that has experience in not only HBCUs but PWI’s [Primarily White Institutions] and has worked throughout the southeast region. That individual is our new Athletic Director, Paul Bryant!”

Bryant comes to A&M with an established track record as a champion of academics, fundraiser, developer of championship programs and facilities and someone who is extremely familiar with the culture of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), having led four such departments over the course of eight years.

Most recently he has served as the Associate Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics at NCAA Division II transitioning Edward Waters since 2019 following two years as AD at Division I Grambling (2016-18) and South Carolina State (2014-16). He also led DII Stillman during the 2013-14 campaign and Eureka from 2008-13.

In his three years at EWU, Dr. Paul Bryant has led the program to a successful beginning of a transition to NCAA Division II, backed by significant facility upgrades that have helped change the trajectory of Tigers Athletics along with bringing in new programs to expand the program’s footprint with both fans and recruits.

Efforts such as those increased the Department’s profile to the point Edward Waters hosted multiple conference championships and had one sport claim its first league title.

In that span nearly every facility would see improvements made to it, including locker room and stadium renovations at James P. Small Memorial Baseball Park and J. Gardner “Nip” Sams Softball Park and renovations to the Adams-Jenkins Community Sports & Music Complex, home of men’s and women’s basketball and women’s volleyball.

One of those facility projects benefited both EWU’s most high profile sport and one of its newest as Community Field & Stadium, home to football and the new women’s soccer program (2021), now has 5,000 seats, a pair of grand stands, two press boxes, a large video board and State-of-the-Art artificial turf designed to provide a cooler surface in the Florida heat.

In addition to women’s soccer, the Tigers also added men’s volleyball to the spring slate in 2022, making it the only such program in the State of Florida.

The Gulf Coast Athletic Conference would also become very familiar with Edward Waters during Bryant’s time in Jacksonville as they hosted the 2021 track & field and basketball championships. The latter would produce the first GCAC title for women’s basketball since joining the league in more than a decade prior in 2010.

Prior to the move to EWU, Dr. Paul Bryant spent two seasons as the AD at Grambling, producing numerous Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) championships while successfully navigating financial challenges, facility needs and pre-existing NCAA sanctions.

Those efforts would be highlighted by a 2017-18 campaign that would see football and both men’s and women’s basketball claim league titles. For men’s basketball it was their first such championship in 30 years while women’s soccer also reached the SWAC Championship.

A proven fundraiser, those skills would be on display during Bryant’s three years at South Carolina State from 2014-17. While in Orangeburg, South Carolina he doubled the number of donations to the program over the first two years on campus while generating significant increases in single game and season ticket sales, attendance and alumni engagement.

That would help lead to the Bulldogs’ football program to a share of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) regular season title and men’s tennis qualifying for the NCAA Tournament.

That success would continue in 2015-16 with men’s and women’s tennis MEAC Championships, a runner-up finish for men’s basketball and the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) Athletic Director’s Association Most Improved APR Award. He would also be one of just 15 recipients of the FCS ADA Stipend Award nationwide that year.

S.C. State would also produce generational talent in that three-year span as Javon Hargrave earned MEAC Defensive Player of the Year twice and would go on to be drafted in the third round of the 2016 National Football League (NFL) Draft. Darius Leonard, a star linebacker with the Indianapolis Colts, would continue the trend with 2016 MEAC Defensive Player of the Year honors before embarking on an illustrious pro career.

In one season at then Division II Stillman in 2013-14 Dr. Paul Bryant changed the culture with the creation of the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll, Athletic Hall of Fame and a Fifth-Year athletic work program.

He also raised funds for an on-campus fitness center as well as initiating upgrades to the baseball and track & field facilities and increasing department staff in key areas. All of these efforts led to division and tournament championships for men’s and women’s tennis and baseball and eight track & field student-athletes earning berths in the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships.

Dr. Paul Bryant got his first full-time opportunity at the AD level with Eureka College from 2008-13 where he led an 18-sport program. While there he aided in the development of the institution’s strategic plan, instituted branding guidelines and oversaw a record number of student-athletes making the AD Honor Roll.

A men’s basketball coach by trade early in his career, he served in that capacity as well as Associate Director of Athletics at Urbana from 2004-08. He would go on to earn American Mideast Conference (AMC) and South Division Coach of the Year honors as a result of his direct work with student-athletes, one of whom garnered league Player of the Year recognition.

That coaching career began in 1997 at Sinclair Community College and would see Bryant earn Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAA) and Great Lakes Region Coach of the Year honors over his six seasons. Those would include four trips to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) and a National Runner-Up finish in 1998.

“It’s great to be here at Alabama A&M University,” said Bryant. “I would like to thank our Board of Trustees, President Wims and the search committee for entrusting me with this prestigious and outstanding appointment. I would also like to thank former AD Bryan Hicks – he has laid the foundation that we will continue to build on and make a little better.”

In addition to his administrative acumen and knowledge on the court, Bryant was also sought after for a number of positions of leadership outside the institutional level.

While with Edward Waters he served as a member of the NAIA Athletic Director’s Association Board of Directors and chairman of the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Athletic Directors and was on the Hillcrest Golf Course Commission during his time in Orangeburg.

Additionally, he was a featured speaker at Emerging AD in Morrow, Georgia in 2014. The latter is a well-established organization founded on helping individuals eventually reach the head AD chair through interactions with successful individuals throughout the collegiate athletic landscape.

“We want to make sure that all of our sports are successful in the classroom as well as on the playing surfaces,” added Bryant. “Mediocrity will not be accepted. This is an exciting time for Alabama A&M because of the strategic vision and goals from President Wims and my team and I plan on taking that vision and making certain that the Athletics Department is in line with his vision and goals for the institution.”

Bryant holds a bachelor’s degree from Alaska Pacific, earned his Masters from Urbana and a Doctorate of Education in Athletic Administration from North Central University in 2020.

The Division II Membership Process is a three-year process in which an institution is required to show the Division II Membership Committee a commitment to the Division II model. 

Both Allen University and Edward Waters University will to move into Year Two of a three-year transition into Division II. Year Two will allow both universities’ varsity sports programs to compete fully at the NCAA Division II level.

EWU first announced its intentions to move to Division II and the SIAC at the football media day back in 2019. Three years later, the changes in the Edward Waters program have not gone lost on players like defensive back Dartrelle Rolle.

“It feels great, to be honest, because when I came it was an NAIA school and seeing the change from when we got here – seeing the new stadium, coming in the conference – new teams you have to play against,” he said. “It feels really great to be honest.”

Allen University linebacker Gary Bourrage said he’s excited to be a part of the SIAC.

“It’s an honor. It’s honor to be a part of a great conference, a great HBCU conference,” Bourrage said during SIAC Media Day. “I feel the HBCU football is so amazing. So I’m just happy to be a part of it.”

Jacksonville, Florida-The Edward Waters baseball team picked up a massive road victory over a Savannah State team that coming into Friday’s game, won their last 13 consecutive games, were the #1 ranked HBCU baseball team in several polls, and ranked 8th in the recent NCBWA South Region poll. The Tigers had to use extra innings to pick up a 6-5 victory in 10 innings at Tiger Field in Savannah.

The victory for the Tigers also gave them their ninth win in their last 13 contests away from Henry L. Aaron Field at James P. Small Memorial Baseball Park.

EWU (18-21) utilized a strong offensive effort on Friday, outhitting Savannah State (28-7) 12-9  in the contest. The Tigers pitching duo of starter Alexander Davila and relief pitcher Caden Hutchinson were also impressive, combining for six strikeouts.

Edward Waters hit the scoreboard first in the top of the 1st inning, thanks to an RBI single from Daquarius Thompkins. The Purple & Orange extended their lead by one in the top of the 2nd on a John Nobles RBI single to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead.

SSU cut the lead in half in the bottom of the 3rd with an RBI triple to make it a 2-1 ballgame.

EWU extended their lead in the top of the 5th when Payton Shubert hit a mammoth 2-RBI homerun, his team leading fourth homer of the season and third in the last six games, to push the advantage to 4-1.

Savannah State would not be denied in the bottom half of the 5th with two RBI singles to cut the lead back to one at 4-3.

SSU tied the proceedings at 4-4 in the bottom of the 8th on an RBI singles. 

The two teams went scoreless in the 9th inning pushing the game to extra innings. Edward Waters plated two critically important runs in the top of the 10th inning. A Shubert RBI triple, and an RBI single from Luis Rodriguez gave the Tigers a 6-4 lead.

Savannah State was able to pull one run back in the bottom of the 10th on an RBI sacrifice, but Caden Hutchinson was able to close the door on an SSU comeback to preserve their one-run victory,

Payton Shubert fell a single and double short of hitting for the cycle, finishing the game 3-for-5 with a triple, a homerun, three RBIs and two runs scored. Daquarius Thompkins also went 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored for Edward Waters.

Starter Alexander Davila picked up a no decision in the game, going 8.0 innings, allowing eight hits, four earned runs, one walk, and struck out five. Caden Hutchinson picked up his first career collegiate victory on the mound in relief, going 2.0 innings, allowing one hit, one earned run, two walks, and one strikeout.

Edward Waters and Savannah State will continue their home-and-home weekend series on Saturday afternoon in Jacksonville with a doubleheader starting at 1:00pm at Henry L. Aaron field at James P. Small Memorial Park.

Jacksonville, Florida-One day before the annual Purple & Orange Spring Football Game, Edward Waters University released its highly anticipated 2022 football schedule on Friday morning.

The 11-game slate for 2022 features six home games at the Nathaniel Glover Community Field & Stadium and five games on the road. The Tigers’ schedule also features eight contests against fellow SIAC members as Edward Waters will be in the second year of their provisional period from NAIA to NCAA Division II and the SIAC. The Purple & Orange will also play a road contest against a Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) opponent for the first time in two seasons.

“We are very excited about the slated schedule for the upcoming season,” remarked second year head football coach Toriano Morgan. “This year’s slate affords the opportunity to preserve rivalries from the past, but also offers our fans endless opportunities to experience a host of HBCU traditions. We are Ready to go to work!”

Edward Waters jumps into Week 0 action

“I am excited to be able to release this schedule to “Tiger Nation”, said Associate Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics, Dr. Paul Bryant. “These contests will provide a tremendous opportunity to continue showcasing the EWU brand nationally, while also allowing for our student-athletes to compete at the highest levels of competition.”

The Purple & Orange will open the season on the road in South Florida as EWU will take part in the “Week 0” contest against HBCU rival Florida Memorial in the 2nd edition of the “Big Cat Classic”. The contest will take place on August 27th at historic Traz Powell Stadium in Miami Gardens. The Tigers opened the 2021 season against FMU at home and came away with a 24-21 come from behind win over the Lions.

EWU will open SIAC on September 3rd, hosting Clark Atlanta in the home opener. The Tigers and Panthers will meet on the gridiron for the first time since 2013, when CAU won 35-28 in Atlanta. The annual “Battle of the Tigers” will take place on September 10th, when Savannah State comes to Jacksonville. SSU has won the last four meetings between the two teams, including last season’s 24-0 result in Savannah. After an open week on September 17th, the Tigers will close the month on the 24th on the road in Jackson, Tennessee against SIAC West opponent, Lane College. The Dragons won the last meeting between the two teams in a high scoring affair, 45-35 in Jacksonville.

Tigers get a slice of Aggie Pride

The month of October opens with back-to-back home games starting on October 1st as the Maroon Tigers of Morehouse College come to town for an East Division tilt. Edward Waters snapped a seven-game losing streak to Morehouse last season with a convincing 37-13 win in Atlanta. The defending SIAC Champion Albany State Golden Rams come to town on October 8th. ASU took home a 30-0 homecoming victory over EWU in 2021. On October 15th, Edward Waters will make their first trip to Greensboro, N. C. to face multiple time HBCU National Champion, North Carolina A&T in the first meeting between the two schools.

The Tigers will next head to Wilberforce, Ohio to battle Central State. EWU mauled the Marauders 56-19 last season for Homecoming. EWU wraps up October against SIAC West Division champion Miles College on the 29th in Fairfield, Alabama. The Golden Bears escaped Jacksonville with a 16-9 victory over the Tigers in 2021.

Edward Waters will celebrate Homecoming on November 5th against the Eagles from the University of Fort Lauderdale. The meeting will be the first between the Tigers and UFTL on the gridiron. The 2022 slate will conclude on November 12th in the 3rd Annual AME Football Classic as the Tigers will welcome rival Allen University to Jacksonville. The Tigers are riding a seven-game winning streak against their rivals from Columbia, South Carolina, including last season’s 51-34 victory that kept “The Bishop’s Trophy” in Jacksonville for another season.

“We got our first road win of the season so we were able to check that box,” Edward Waters Head Coach Torian Morgan stated.

“The defense played lights out football. We just have to continue to build and get better on a daily basis,” Coach Morgan explained.

FRESHMAN PHENOM

True freshman running back Devon Bailey got it done for the Edward Water Tigers today. Bailey exploded for 69 yards and two touchdowns on the game. He also averaged a whopping 9.6 yards per carry as he broke several tackles with the ball in his hands. He did have a fumble, but the young gunner kept the momentum going offensively for the team.

“It’s an honor being here as a freshman and just showing what I can do,” Bailey exclaimed.

THE TURNOVERS WERE COSTLY

The Maroon Tigers could not find any success on offense and the turnovers were to the blame. Senior quarterback Michael Sims threw three interceptions in the game and took a sack as well. Marqu Collins ended up relieving Sims during the game. However, he was not much better as the signal caller. Collins took three sacks in his outing as the Maroon Tigers offensive line got destroyed in the trenches.

EDWARD WATERS STATS

Ferante Cowart led the Tigers in receiving yards with 77 on four receptions. He also found the end zone for a touchdown. Mal Stephens was the leading rusher for Edward Waters with 98 yards on 17 carriers. Quarterback Ced Smith threw for 181 yards on 16 attempts and 10 completions. Linebacker Cam McClain snatched two interceptions on defense for the Tigers.

MOREHOUSE STATS

Delan Tolliver was the leading receiver for the Maroon Tigers with 29 yards on three receptions. Earnest Davis led his team in rushing with 69 yards on 13 attempts. Davis would also go on to score the only touchdown for the squad. Michael Sims was the leading passer with 90 yards on 23 attempts and nine completions.

ONTO THE NEXT

Edward Waters will take on Albany State next Saturday on the road in Georgia. Morehouse will be at home next Saturday to take on Tuskegee University in the Morehouse-Tuskegee Football Classic.

The contest itself proved to be an instant classic as Edward Waters sent the Purple & Orange faithful home happy with a dramatic 24-20 victory over the Lions, winning a season opener for the first time since 2012, when the Tigers defeated Point, 66-34.

Edward Waters (1-0) was its own worst enemy for a majority of the contest, namely with turnovers and penalties. The Tigers turned the ball over five times in the contest (three interceptions and two lost fumbles) and were penalized eight times for 98 yards. 

The EWU defense and special teams carried the day for in the victory, forcing three turnovers and scoring a special teams touchdown on a blocked punt in the third quarter.

Florida Memorial (0-1) fired the opening salvo in the contest, scoring a touchdown on their opening drive. The extra point was intercepted by EWU, giving the visitors from Miami Gardens a 6-0 lead with 10:21 remaining.

Edward Waters turned the football over three out of their first four possessions in first half, including an interception just before halftime. EWC was able to avert a bigger deficit, forcing a missed field goal to go in the locker room down 6-0.

After a lengthy delay due to lightning, EWU unfortunately started the third quarter the same way they did in the second, turning the ball over. This time, FMU was able to make the Tigers pay for their mistake, scoring on a 64-yard interception return for a touchdown to extend their advantage to 13-0 with 11:17 remaining in the third quarter.

EWU was finally able to get on the board with 3:52 remaining in the third, thanks to the special teams unit. Freshman DB Vashaun Stockman blocked an FMU punt and was able to fall on the ball in the endzone, scoring the first touchdown in the NCAA Division II era of EWU football, bringing the Tigers within six at 13-7.

Edward Waters broght the score to within three, thanks to a 32-yard field goal from Angel Sevier to start the fourth quarter making it a 13-10 ballgame. 

The Tigers were able to take their first lead of the contest at the 5:41 mark of the fourth with a 10-yard touchdown run from junior running back De’Shaun Hugee giving EWU a 17-10 lead.

On the ensuing possession, FMU came back with a vengeance, connecting on 39-yard TD reception to retake the lead at 20-17 with 2:44 remaining in the fourth quarter.

After a 40-yard kick return from junior wide receiver Ferante Cowart, Edward Waters went to work, starting their drive in Lions territory at the FMU 37. Freshman QB Cedquan Smith was able to punctuate a 6 play, 37 yard drive with the game winning touchdown from one yard out to give EWU a 24-20 lead with :16 remaining.

Edward Waters was able to shut the door on any comeback attempts from Florida Memorial as senior defensive back Drevontae Jackson intercepted a Lions hail mary attempt, giving the Tigers a memorable and historic victory.

FMU was able to outgain  EWU in total offense 329 to 325, including a 206-112 edge in passing yards. Edward Waters on the other hand leaned heavily on their rushing attack, outgaining the Lions 213-123.

Cedquan Smith finished his debut performance, going 7-of-9 passing for 90 yards and two interception, while also gaining 22 yards on six carries with a touchdown. 

De’Shaun Hugee was the game’s leading rusher with 17 carries for 70 yards and a touchdown. Sophomore wide receiver Steavenson Fernand finished his afternoon with three catches for 49 yards to lead the way through the air for EWU.

Defensively, Ahmon Jefferson finished with 5.5 tackles, including 1.0 tackles for loss.

EWU will be on a bye week and will return to action on Thursday, September 9th in a nationally televised matchup against Benedict College. Kickoff is set for 7:30pm and will be aired on ESPNU,

Zachary Faison, Jr., president and CEO of Edward Waters University. “Today’s occasion marks the realization of our vision to provide a state-of-the-art athletic field and stadium for our student-athletes and coaches to showcase their athletic talents. Providing elite facilities such as this one is especially important as we have been accepted as a NCAA Division II HBCU Member Institution and member of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC).”

In February 2020, the University broke ground on the community field and stadium with a plan to replace the EWU practice field and enhance the overall competitive profile of the athletic program and game day experience. The $4.3 million dollar project provides a permanent home to the University’s football and soccer programs, the former of which kicks off its inaugural season in the NCAA and SIAC on Saturday, August 28 in a historic gridiron match up against Florida Memorial University which begins at 4 p.m.

“Our city is proud to be home to EWU and its proud legacy as the oldest private institution for higher learning in the state and we look forward to an even brighter future. Under the leadership of Dr. Faison building upon the great foundation laid by Dr. Glover and their predecessors, I am confident this momentum will continue to build. Following the dedication and ribbon cutting of the Glover Stadium, the University held an unveiling and ribbon cutting of the Tiger Plaza. Dr. Faison expressed that the university “wanted to build a destination space that would enhance the game day experience at Edward Waters University. Our vision for a premier gathering and meeting space focused on community fellowship and activity birthed the Tiger Plaza which will undoubtedly serve as a gathering hub for faculty, staff, students, alumni, and friends of the university.”

At the perimeter of Tiger Plaza is a 14 foot Tiger made of solid bronze and weighing 1500 pounds. It was designed by Darren Hussey of All Classics Limited. Tiger Plaza was designed by Chris Washington of Division 12 Consulting and constructed by Chris Mouhoutis of Cor13 Construction Management. Dr. Faison “The marker is one of historical significance that represents the spirit of Edward Waters University and the prideland that serves as home of the EWU Tigers. This statue signifies that this is Tiger territory and enhances our campus aesthetic and the on campus event experience in Tiger Plaza” said Dr. Faison.

“We are embarking on a new era for Edward Waters University. We have gone from a NAIA status to NCAA Division II so it is fitting that we mark our new status with this monument, one that was envisioned by President Faison. It became the vision of all of our teams to create a new game day environment that would be second to none” said Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Dr. Paul Bryant.

All of the Edward Waters University athletic programs were represented with a host of student-athletes, cheerleaders, and members of the marching band on site at the ribbon cuttings. Molly Ragle, President of the Student Athletic Advisory Council and member of the women’s basketball team said, “we are so excited and honored to be part of the history that the school has been making. Bethune Cookman University 

“We are looking for guys that are committed, guys that are dependable, and guys that really love football,” BCU Football Head Coach Terry Sims explained. “We do not want guys that like football. We want guys that love football and love learning. Because you are called a student-athlete for a reason.”

“If you go to most HBCU’s you are going to receive a lot of attention. Not just athletically but academically also,” Sims finished.

North Carolina A&T University 

“The experience. That is one of the biggest things that people get to see,” NC A&T defensive backs coach Thomas Howard started.  “The experience at the games, the bands, all of the pageantry that goes with the game is a totally different experience. You have to see it to really understand it.”

“The next thing is the people. The people at HBCU’s are very supportive and they are going to go above and beyond to make sure that you get all of the things that you need,” Howard continued. “The last thing is the academics. The academics are second to none. I know at NCA&T the programs that we offer in engineering, agriculture, sciences, it is on another level.”

Virginia State University 

“The first thing is to be recruitable and know that no matter what level you are you can be recruited,” VSU Football Recruiting Coordinator Trumaine Watson explained. “The second thing is to make sure your grades match your film. That is something that we are going to look at.”

“The third thing is to go to camps, send emails, be recruited,” Watson said. “You really have to go to work and put the time in and do the things you need to do to be recruited.”

Morehouse University

“The first this is ability. Don’t send long paragraphs through Twitter. Your film speaks for itself,” Morehouse cornerbacks coach Saeed Lee exclaimed. “Right behind that is grades. And then ability again. Can you play?”

Edward Waters University

“The first thing we want to make sure you have in order is the academics,” EWU Football Head Coach Toriano Morgan explained.  “Make sure that you have your core classes in order, make sure that you are on track to graduate, make sure that you understand the GPA requirements for the institution that might be recruiting you.”

“The next thing is when we come to school to see you, make sure that you are dressed appropriately. You get seven seconds to make a first impression.” Morgan said.

“When you put your highlight reel together understand that coaches may not have the time to look at an entire eight-minute film,” Morgan started. “So, make sure that your most explosive plays are upfront and that is incorporating a body of work.”

Edward Waters took its time

Faison said that shortly after his arrival at the school in the fall of 2018, he began to push to upgrade the athletic department and move towards NCAA membership. The application to move from NAIA to Division II is $30,000 and the board got behind the push.

Edward Waters would hire Paul A. Bryant as AD in the summer of 2019, and a few months later it showed up at SIAC Media Day.

“Our diligent work in this process has brought us to this historic moment in the long and storied history of EWU Athletics,” Bryant said in a statement. “We are overjoyed to be accepted as a provisional member of the NCAA Division II and even more so excited to be returning home to the SIAC.”

“The opportunities for success for our athletic programs are endless and we look forward to working with and competing against such storied programs in the conference.”

Dr. Faizon said the application was officially completed this January and it became official in recent weeks.

The SIAC continues to expand

As a new NCAA Division II member, Edward Waters will begin the first year of a three-year provisional process in August. When all benchmarks are met, the University will be eligible for full membership in the NCAA in August of 2024.

This will be Edward Waters’ second stint in the SIAC. It spent a decade in it before leaving in 1935. The addition brings the league to 15 schools.

Leighton Batiste, the SIAC’s Associate Commissioner of Marketing & Partnerships, welcomed EWU into the league. He also boasted of the league’s head-to-to Nike partnership and new ESPN deal, both of which he said were the largest in NCAA Division II athletics. 

“This is not your grandfather’s SIAC,” he said. “Today the SIAC is arguably stronger now than it’s ever been during its nearly 108 years.”

Faison, in closing, highlighted that Edward Waters is now the only HBCU in the state at the Division II level. He made an appeal to potential student-athletes in the state to consider keeping their talents closer to home.

“Now you can stay at home,” he said. “We want you right here, in your home state where you can compete and your family can see you compete at the NCAA Division II level. We are so proud of this accomplishment for our University.”

Morgan brings over 17 years of coaching experience to his new role at Edward Waters, spread amongst high school and collegiate institutions. Under his purview, Morgan has coached 35 all-conference players and has been a part of sending 13 players to play in the National Football League. Morgan has been a perennial winner at every stop in his coaching career, bringing with him a streak of seven consecutive seasons with at least seven wins or more.

A native of Fort Lauderdale, Morgan returns to his home state after spending two seasons as Assistant Head Coach/Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks Coach at Virginia State University. In his first season at VSU in 2019, Morgan was an instrumental figure in the Trojans’ 8-2 overall record and 6-1 mark in the CIAA, en route to a second place finish in the CIAA’s Northern Division. Morgan’s offense was ranked 4th in the CIAA in scoring, averaging 31.4 points per game, third in the league in total offense with a 382.2 yards per game average, and second in rushing yards with 228.4 yards per game.

Prior to joining the staff at Virginia State University, Morgan was a highly decorated Head Coach at Dillard High School in Fort Lauderdale, where he restored the perennial prep power to prominence, guiding them to a regional playoff appearance in his first season. Morgan compiled a 9-3 record which was his Alma Mater’s best record in 15 years. Morgan was selected as the Head Coach of the Broward County Athletic Association All-Star Game and the Head Coach for the Public vs Private All-Star Game. Morgan was also selected as a finalist for the Tournament of Champions Coach of the Year.

Morgan served as the Associate Head Coach/Offensive Coordinator at Virginia Union University for four seasons, from 2014-2017. Morgan is credited with directing a prolific offense at Virginia Union, which averaged over 400 yards and 34 pts per game during his stint.  In 2014, the team finished 1st in total offense and 3rd in scoring offense in the CIAA, Morgan improved the Panthers’ passing average from 69.9ypg in 2013 to 409.3ypg in 2014, which help propel the Panthers to a seven win season (7-3). Quarterback Kenny Graham finished 1st nationally in yards per completion averaging and 4th nationally in passing efficiency.
 
The 2015 season was another record-breaking one for Morgan and the Panther’s Offense Averaging 36 points per game and 439 yards per game, both 1st in the CIAA. The Panthers became the first CIAA program to amass over 2,000 yards rushing and 2,000 yards passing in the same season. Offsetting that production with 22 Rushing TDS and 22 Passing TDs and an NCAA Playoff appearance for the first time in 25 years. Quarterback Shaheem Dowdy was awarded the Willie Lanier Award which goes to the best College Football Player (Non-FCS) in the Commonwealth of Virginia. This was the first time this award had ever been awarded to a Div-2 player.
 
In 2016, Morgan’s offense produced William Stanback who finished 1st in the CIAA in rushing with 1,299 yards, while being selected First Team All-CIAA.

Morgan’s Offense at VUU produced 11 All-CIAA Players and 4 All-Americans. Under Morgan’s direction the offense set six program records during his tenure.

Morgan’s offensive success over the past half a decade has awarded some national exposure. On two occasions, Morgan was selected as the Assistant Head Coach/Offensive Coordinator for the HBCU Spirit of America Bowl All-Star Game, A nationally televised game for HBCU student athletes to be evaluated for the NFL Draft.

Morgan began his career as a coach in 2002 as a graduate assistant at his Alma Mater, Tennessee State University, earning both a Bachelor’s (Criminal Justice, 2000) and Master’s (Administration and Leadership, 2002) degrees.

Morgan was also a standout player at TSU, where he was a three year letterwinner for the Big Blue Tigers. He was a pivotal part of back-to-back Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) Championship teams in 1998 and 1999. Morgan led TSU to a #1 national ranking, becoming the first HBCU to be ranked #1 and also helped lead TSU to two consecutive FCS playoff appearances. In his final season in 2000, Morgan was also voted team captain.

Morgan is married to his wife Adeline and has a son, Zaiden.

Ruffin has a 5-18 record at Edward Waters since taking over the program in 2017. 

His best season at Edward Waters came in 2018, his first season with the program. He guided the team to a 4-7 record. Things were looking up for Edward Waters heading into the 2019 season as the program showed up at SIAC Media Day and announced its intention to join the conference once it completed its move from the NAIA to NCAA Division II. The result was a 1-10 season.

The announced move came with a tougher schedule, consisting of HBCUs at both the Division II and Division I levels of competition. There were matchups against two SWAC programs, Southern and Prairie View, that saw EWC outscored a combined 102-14 in the two losses. It also faced Shaw University, a program that Ruffin had helped re-start as head coach nearly two decades prior.

EWC also took on what it hoped to be future SIAC rivals in Morehouse, Lane, Central State, Miles, Kentucky State, Tuskegee and Savannah State. It went winless against these opponents, though it did nearly knock off Tuskegee at home. The lone win for Gregory Ruffin and his team came against Allen University, a second-year NAIA program that has announced it will be moving to the SIAC as well.

Then, of course, came the 53-0 loss to Jackson State. The game was actually scheduled prior to Deion Sanders’ arrival and set to be EWC’s lone game of the spring 2021 season. Now it appears that it was Ruffin’s last. 

The obvious question is the one posed in this headline: Did losing to Deion Sanders cause Gregory Ruffin his job? The answer is almost certainly no.

No one who knows anything about HBCU football, or non-Division I football in general, expected anything less than what Jackson State did on Feb. 21. Edward Waters is an NAIA school, which means it can only offer a maximum of 24 scholarships. JSU is an FCS school, which gets up to 63 scholarships.

The JSU game offered EWC what money games against FBS teams offer HBCUs: some money for the school and an opportunity for exposure for its student-athletes. Especially once Deion Sanders was hired at JSU.

“We didn’t see this happening. What they’re doing here is phenomenal. But this gives our kids a chance to play at the big stage,” EWC Director of Athletics Dr. Paul A. Bryant told HBCU Gameday in Jackson.  “And then also, give them the opportunity to have a little air time.”

The game was aired on ESPN3. Speaking with Dr. Bryant as the final seconds of the blowout loss ticked down the clock, he seemed pretty upbeat about the program’s future.

“We’re going to be ready in the fall,” Bryant said. “We’ve got our new stadium going in and we’re about ready to open up. But we’re going to make sure we have an outstanding recruiting class and be ready for the fall football season.”

More likely than not, Bryant’s fate was already sealed prior to the first snap.

Edward Waters is a historically black college located in Jacksonville, Florida. While much smaller than future SWAC schools Florida A&M and Bethune-Cookman, it is the oldest HBCU in the state of Florida. It was founded by the African Methodist Episcopal Church in 1866 as Brown Theological Institute.

The school has had an off-and-on relationship with football as a sport, bringing it back in 2001 after a long absence. Its most famous football alumnus is Jim “Cannonball” Butler, a one-time Pro Bowl running back in the NFL.

Edward Waters is moving on up

The school’s current athletic classification is in the NAIA, as it plays football in the Sun Conference while most of its sports play in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference. In 2019 it announced plans to join the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC), a Division II conference home to schools like Tuskegee University, Morehouse College and Savannah State among others. Just last year the school broke ground on a new facility as it prepares for the move up to D2 status. 

The Tigers’ are coached by Greg Ruffin, who took the job as a replacement for the legendary Alvin “Shine” Wyatt. Ruffin is 5-17 in two seasons, with no wins over NCAA schools. Its roster consists of a few former FCS players, including former Bethune-Cookman defensive backs Drevonte Jackson and Derrian Hall. The team is made up heavily of players from the state of Florida.

The Tigers currently play a mix of NAIA schools and Division II schools, but they have stepped up to play FCS HBCUs over recent years. The results are what you would expect for “money games.”

Deion Sanders and JSU heavy favorites

No doubt Edward Waters will enter Sunday’s game – its only game this spring – as a huge underdog. Jackson State was far from a juggernaut in 2019, and Sanders and Co. have only had a few weeks with their team to implement a new system and a new way of life. And many of those talented players that the program has signed since Sept. will be on the sidelines at Mississippi Valley State.

Based off those facts and Edward Water’s history against FCS opponents, I’m picking Jackson State as a 42-point favorite.

Jacksonville, Florida — Edward Waters College President & Chief Executive Officer, Dr. A. Zachary Faison, Jr., and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics, Dr. Paul A. Bryant announced the launch of the new men’s volleyball program, a 2021-2022 initiative that will be supported in part by a $100,000 grant from First Point Volleyball Foundation and the national governing body of volleyball in the United States, USA Volleyball.

The new Edward Waters men’s volleyball program is part of a national effort to bring the sport to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU’s).

“We are pleased to announce that Edward Waters College, distinctively the state of Florida’s first independent institution of higher learning as well as Florida’s first institution established for the education of African-Americans, will add yet another first to its storied history: the first Florida HBCU to add men’s volleyball to our cadre of intercollegiate athletics,” stated Dr. Faison. “As the institution continues to expand its profile in the administration of best-in-class competition, we will be onboarding approximately 16-20 young men who will honorably represent Tiger Nation and the Emerging Eminence of EWC.” Dr. Faison continued, “I want to thank First Point Volleyball Foundation and USA Volleyball for their support, as well as thank SIAC Commissioner Greg Moore and my fellow HBCU Presidents for extending Edward Waters College an initiation to formally join the SIAC.  Pending a successful transition this year, EWC will be positioned to qualify for and compete in the SIAC Championships.”

Last year, six HBCUs announced the addition of men’s volleyball via a $1 million grant from First Point and USA Volleyball to the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC). Edward Waters College, upon its anticipated transition from the NAIA to the NCAA Division II level later this school year, expects to compete in the SIAC in its inaugural men’s volleyball season in 2021-2022.

In July of 2019, Edward Waters College was extended a formal invitation to join the SIAC. The College is currently a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), and competes in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference (GCAC). The Tigers compete as an NAIA Independent, but do have a scheduling agreement to compete against SIAC institutions. The SIAC is an NCAA Division II conference that is comprised of Historically Black Colleges and Universities, with all but one of its members located in the Southeastern United States. Edward Waters was previously a member of the SIAC from 1930 to 1935.

Volleyball is the fastest growing team sport in the United States for high school boys, growing at a rate of 21% over the last five years and 29% over the last ten years. Men’s NCAA volleyball has also grown by 79% over the last ten years.

President Faison and Athletics Director Bryant are committed to providing more opportunities for young people to mature and develop through athletics. “When a group from First Point Volleyball Foundation approached us about the possibility of adding men’s volleyball, it played well into our plans to expand sports offerings,” said Dr. Bryant, who has served since June 2019 as the ninth full-time Director of Intercollegiate Athletics in EWC history. “Boys’ volleyball is the fastest growing team sport in America for high school boys and there are lots of boys playing the sport in the state of Florida. Men’s professional volleyball is the third most popular sport in the world.”

“We want more opportunities for young people in this country to compete in collegiate athletics,” said John Speraw, volunteer chairman of First Point Volleyball Foundation, head coach of the USA Men’s National Volleyball team, and head coach of UCLA men’s volleyball. “When we founded First Point Volleyball Foundation, we envisioned supporting growth in NCAA Division II. Dr. Bryant is a qualified AD ready to lead EWC from NAIA to NCAA Division II and we are excited about the opportunity to be a part of EWC’s growth. Speraw further added, “We talk at USA Volleyball about the ‘Path to the Podium’. It is not outlandish to think that a young man playing at EWC in the SIAC conference in 2021 could be an Olympian in 2028 or 2032. Our work at First Point Volleyball is providing more opportunities for young people and it is also building a pipeline for more success at the international level for Team USA for decades to come.”

“We are very happy to add an eighth game and fifth home game to our spring 2021 football schedule,” said Jackson State Vice President and Director of Athletics Ashley Robinson. “I’m very excited for our student-athletes and our fans. We have a great spring 2021 schedule.”

JSU will take on in-state rival Mississippi Valley State in Week Two before traveling to Grambling State in Week Three. It will have a bye week March 13 before traveling to Montgomery to take on SWAC East foe Alabama State.
 
Season ticket packages will be released at a later date.
 
Fall 2020 season tickets that were purchased can be used for the Spring 2021 schedule.

Jacksonville, Florida-The Edward Waters College Family is saddened to announce the passing of football assistant coach, Cornelius Corprew who passed away on Saturday morning.

Corprew, 46, was set to begin his first season as wide receivers coach for the Tigers.

A veteran coach, Corprew amassed over 25 years of gridiron coaching experience at the high school and collegiate levels.

In addition to his duties at Edward Waters, Corprew was the Executive Director at Coach Me Up Sports, where he collaborated with FBS, FCS, Division II, III, and NAIA programs to coordinate prospect recruiting opportunities.

Corprew also spent four seasons, from 2016-2019 at Offense-Defense Sports, where he was the National Camp and All-American Bowl Director. While with O-D, Corprew recruited over 170 High School All-American players to participate in the National All-American Bowl Game.

Corprew’s most notable collegiate coaching stint was at Tulane University, where he spent three seasons, from 2014-2016,  as the Assistant Director of Player Personnel and Assistant Wide Receivers Coach with the Green Wave. His other collegiate football stops included Kentucky Christian University, Livingstone College, North Carolina Tech, and Shaw University.

Corprew did have Jacksonville ties as well, spending two seasons as the Offensive Passing Game Coordinator and Defensive Backs Coach at Jean Ribault High School from 2013-2014.

Not only did Corprew have several years on the football sidelines, he also spent a season in 2008 as the Men’s & Women’s Track and Field Head Coach at Livingstone College.

A 1996 graduate of Fayetteville State University, Corprew was also a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Coach Corprew,” remarked Director of Intercollegiate Athletics, Dr. Paul Bryant. “He made an immediate impact on our student-athletes and our department. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife and his family during this most difficult time.”

At this time, EWC asks supporters, fans, friends, and acquaintances of Coach Corprew to keep his family and the football program in their thoughts and prayers.

“It is an assessment, although we got the acceptance, if we are looking to place an application to go NCAA Division II we’ll have to do that sometime next year. My goal is to really assess where we are, what we provide, and see if the SIAC NCAA Division II is best for Edward Waters,” Bryant said.

Bryant plans on presenting a report to the University President in roughly a year. He will advise if moving up or staying in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference is the best option. EWC does have a history with the SIAC the school was a member of the conference in the 1930s. That hardly weighs on any decision in modern history, but it makes for a long looping prodigal moment.

I had a chance to talk to Bryant this week for an upcoming “HBCU Conversations” and I made the mistake of thinking the move to the SIAC was a completely done deal. It could very well be behind closed doors, but publicly EWC is not ready to make such a proclamation.

Elevated Football Schedule

But one thing is very evident, the SIAC gives Edward Waters a football schedule that fans can get excited about. Last season the Tigers played a complete 11 game schedule exclusively against HBCUs. Despite finishing 1-10, it was a schedule that can sell some tickets. The same can be said for this year’s season, if it’s played, with a ten-game schedule on tap. The atmosphere of last year, and hopefully the season ahead, brings an upgraded experience. In my opinion, that level of “swag” didn’t exist playing against schools from the Mid-South Conference.

With construction underway for the new $4.3 million dollar Community Field and Stadium, you can’t go backward now. It would be hard to imagine Edward Waters not lining up against the SIAC for years to come. Instead opting for another vagabond venture as an independent program. That seemed to be the tone inferred by coach Greg Ruffin when this year’s schedule was announced.

“I am excited for the 2020 football season as it brings about a new day in the history of Edward Waters College,” said the third year Head Football Coach. “The opening of the new Community Stadium on campus allows us to create a new gameday atmosphere here on Kings Road.” Ruffin further added, “The team and coaches are also excited about the schedule and after having a year to compete against schools in the SIAC, we understand the level of competition that is before us.”

Uncertain times lay ahead

But exploratory seasons can start out with one plan and end with another. See Winston-Salem State and the MEAC. Bryant and I shared a laugh over that when I mentioned it was my alma mater.

As we’ll continue to state as the weeks turn into months, no one knows for sure how COVID-19 will affect schools and conferences in the future. EWC’s cross-town neighbor, Jacksonville University, bowed out Division I football back in December when it shuddered its program. Just last week Florida Tech disbanded its football program, citing unknown concerns over the pandemic. So it’s a wise move to take a “let’s wait and see” approach as your official public stance.

This upcoming year will include many big decisions for every college across America, as the safety of students swing in the balance. Edward Waters will deal with those perils along with the looming decision of whether to stay in the GCAC or return home to the SIAC.

Jacksonville, Florida-Edward Waters College (EWC) is proud to unveil the official rendering of the new Community Field and Athletic Stadium, which will serve as home to the Tiger football team, as well as the College’s new women’s soccer program. The $4.3 million facility boasts a total potential seating capacity of 5,000 and is now under construction. Designed by architects PVB Architecture, founded by Mr. Ted Pappas, in a “European-style” arrangement with steeply-raked and sweeping seating areas, along with standing room areas around the open-air artificial turf stadium is meant to bring viewers in a closer relationship to the field and players.

“The new state-of-the-art athletic facility is intended to boost recruiting and assist in the establishment of a new more marketplace relevant institutional brand to increase the College’s overall competitive profile (i.e., both academic and non-academic) and visibility to foundationally support institutional growth,” said EWC President and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. A. Zachary Faison, Jr.

“An on-campus stadium is going to create a different level of engagement and excitement for our dynamic EWC students” stated EWC Director of Intercollegiate Athletics, Mr. Paul Bryant. “This project will also allow us to engage with the New Town community in new ways”.

The stadium will consist of a grandstand on the home side of the field and will have a seating capacity of 2,000. The grandstand will have three tiers, an elevator, restrooms, and the south end zone will feature the scoreboard and an open plaza. The first tier will be the home coach’s box, an area for working press and staff, and the President’s Box to be used by the President, honored guests, and corporate donors. The second tier will be a covered canopy for visiting coaches and filming areas and the third tier will be the Concession areas and restrooms.

Equally important, the stadium will have the latest version of artificial turf from ActGlobal, a worldwide leader in athletics playing surfaces and installed by Burke Sports Construction Group out of Doral, Florida. Most important, the Community Field and Athletic Stadium artificial turf will also contain brock padding and a cork granulate, which will allow for a cooler surface.

“Adding this type of infield will permit for year-round usage for our teams and the community,” said EWC AD, Mr. Paul Bryant. 

Accordingly, Tiger fans will be greeted by a life-sized bronze Tiger statue upon entrance into the Community Field and Athletic Stadium. The Tiger will be designed by classically-trained Master Sculptor, Mr. Brian Hanlon of Hanlon Sculpture Studio, a full-service art studio in New Jersey. He is also the official Master Sculptor for the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and has been commissioned by private foundations, alumni associations, universities, and the National Football League.

A feature of significance in this new facility is a walking track that will encompass the perimeter of the stadium. Edward Waters College sits in the New Town Community, a community that historically has faced challenges related to obesity, high blood pressure, and other health issues. EWC students and and members of the community will be able to the walking track that will serve as a central nerve center for promoting overall health and wellness within the New Town Community.

AD Bryant further added “Now with EWC being the only football-playing college in the city, our new stadium will encourage all of Northeast Florida to witness exciting gridiron action in their backyard and embrace our team’s motto of “One Team, One City.”

“This project is also an example of this administration’s commitment towards making our venerable institution a best-in-class institution of superlative excellence, as we extend our edge as a higher educational model institution of Emerging Eminence” not only, in the classroom but also, on the athletic field,” said President Faison.

The EWC Community Field Stadium & Athletic Stadium is tentatively scheduled for completion on or before September 2020, just in time for EWC’s first home game against the Dragons of Lane College on September 19th.

Atlanta, Georgia-On Monday morning during its annual football media day held at the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta, Georgia, the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) officially announced that the conference through its Council of President’s has voted unanimously to extend an invitation to Edward Waters College (EWC) to join its conference membership.

“The SIAC is excited to extend an invitation to President Faison and the Tigers of Edward Waters College to join the nation’s premier athletic conference at the NCAA Division II level. We believe EWC’s historic mission and its overall academic and athletic competitive profile aligns very closely with our current member institutions and we are fully supportive of their potential NCAA candidacy” said SIAC Commissioner Mr. Gregory Moore.

Currently, EWC holds membership as a member institution of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and the GCAC (Gulf Coast Athletic Conference) while competing as an independent in football. The NCAA Division II SIAC’s invitation portends a possible historic homecoming of sorts for Edward Waters as EWC was formerly a conference member over eight decades ago from 1930 to 1935. Notably, the SIAC currently leads the nation in overall football attendance for NCAA Division II.

“This news is an incredibly significant development for our institution and campus community to include our students, faculty and staff, alumni, and stake holding partners here in the City of Jacksonville and throughout the First Coast region”, said Edward Waters President, Dr. A. Zachary Faison Jr. 

“We are grateful to President French and each member of the conference Council of President’s as well as Commissioner Moore for extending EWC an invitation to join such a venerable group of superlative institutions who are amongst the world’s highest achievers both academically and athletically” Faison said. 

Under the leadership of new EWC Director of Intercollegiate Athletics, Mr. Paul Bryant, who recently came to Edward Waters having previously led three NCAA Athletic programs at both the Division I (Grambling State University and South Carolina State University) and Division II (Stillman College) levels Edward Waters will now turn its efforts towards exploring the feasibility of making a successful application to the NCAA over the next 24-36 months.

“I am excited to be leading at this transformative moment for EWC Athletics as we begin taking next steps towards moving our program to unparalleled heights of unprecedented eminence,” said Bryant. 

In the meantime, and while not officially SIAC members, EWC and the SIAC have entered a scheduling agreement allowing EWC to play seven football games this upcoming season versus SIAC opponents including a home opener versus Morehouse College with visits to Jacksonville by perennial SIAC conference powerhouses Tuskegee University and Miles College as well as a home date with a potential regional rival in Savannah State University. EWC will go on the road to face SIAC opponents at Kentucky State University, Central State University, and Lane College. 

“Coach Ruffin and all of our players are beyond excited for the upcoming season and we are brimming with anticipation and ecstatic to have the opportunity to potentially become a part of this prolific and progressive conference” Bryant said.
