Travis Scott delivered a high-octane performance at Coachella on April 12, 2025, marking one of the festival’s most anticipated moments. Joining him during his set were two iconic HBCU Bands, The Marching 100 from Florida A&M and the Sonic Boom of the South from Jackson State.

Taking the stage late Saturday night, the Houston rapper transformed the desert into his own Astroworld, complete with elaborate visuals, a towering stage setup, and a mosh-pit-ready crowd. Opening with “HYAENA” from his Utopia album, Scott wasted no time sending his fans into a frenzy.

The Marching 100 and Sonic Boom of the South performed an original arrangement of Travis Scott’s “4X4” for his Coachella intro. The record features a sample from Tennessee State University and the Aristocrat of Bands, and features The Marching Storm from Prairie View A&M in the music video. Both FAMU and Jackson State responded to Scott’s open invitation in February for an HBCU band to perform a horn arrangement for Coachella.

It was quite the day for the Marching 100, our Vaughn Wilson reports that the other half of the band was at Bragg Stadium on campus Saturday night performing with line dance king “Cupid.”

Back in the desert Scott blended fan favorites like “SICKO MODE,” “goosebumps,” and “Antidote” with newer tracks, including unreleased snippets that sent fans into a frenzy. Pyrotechnics, fire bursts, and surreal lighting elevated the experience, while guest appearances—rumored to include Don Toliver and Playboi Carti—added to the hype.

Scott also paid homage to the late Virgil Abloh with a heartfelt shoutout and visuals honoring the iconic designer. The crowd, a sea of phones and raging fans, stayed locked in for the entire set, proving his grip on festival culture is as strong as ever.

Alabama State University is ushering in a new era in women’s basketball with the hiring of Johnetta Hayes as the program’s new head coach. Dr. Jason Cable, ASU’s Vice President and Director of Athletics, will formally introduce Coach Hayes during a press conference at the Hornet Stadium Lounge on Tuesday, April 15, at 1 p.m.

“We are absolutely thrilled to welcome Coach Johnetta Hayes to Hornet Nation,” said ASU President Dr. Quinton T. Ross, Jr. “She is a proven leader with a championship pedigree, a two-time SWAC Coach of the Year, and someone who brings a relentless pursuit of excellence both on the court and in the lives of our student-athletes. With her at the helm, we believe Lady Hornets basketball is ready to soar to new heights. Let’s go, Hornet Nation!”

Hayes joins Alabama State following a season as an assistant coach at Rutgers University. She becomes just the third head coach in the history of the Lady Hornets basketball program, succeeding longtime coach Freda Freeman-Jackson, who retired in March after 27 remarkable seasons.

With over a decade of head coaching experience, Hayes has built a reputation for success and program-building. She spent six standout seasons leading Texas Southern University (2013–2019), compiling an 83-24 record in SWAC play and an overall mark of 115-74. During her tenure, TSU captured two SWAC regular-season titles, one SWAC Tournament title, and earned four postseason appearances — including trips to the NCAA Tournament, WNIT, and WBI.

“Today marks an exciting chapter for Alabama State women’s basketball,” said Dr. Cable. “Coach Hayes brings a vision and energy that aligns perfectly with our values and goals. Her dedication to player development and competitive excellence will take our program to new heights while fostering personal growth in our student-athletes.”

“I’m truly honored and grateful to President Ross, Dr. Cable, and Dr. Lavalais for this opportunity,” Hayes said. “Alabama State stands for more than just athletic success — it’s a place that values family, faith, and a championship mindset. I’m excited to join a culture built on these principles and can’t wait to get to work. Now is the time for us to unite as one — SWARMAS1 — and build something special together.”

Hayes most recently served as head coach at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), where she led the Retrievers to a historic turnaround. In 2022-23, her team posted an 11-win improvement, one of the largest turnarounds nationally, and went 10-6 in America East play — the second-best conference record in program history. UMBC advanced to the America East Semifinals for the first time since 2015.

Under Hayes’ leadership at UMBC, Kiara Bell earned America East Defensive Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year honors, making both the All-Conference Second Team and All-Defensive Team. KK White and Ashia McCalla also received All-Conference recognition, with McCalla named to the Academic All-District Team. The team’s academic performance was equally impressive, achieving a 3.32 GPA in Fall 2022, with several players earning 4.0 GPAs and Dean’s List honors.

Prior to her time at UMBC and Texas Southern, Hayes served on the coaching staff at UNC Wilmington under legendary coach Cynthia Cooper-Dyke, helping the Seahawks to consecutive 20-win seasons and WNIT appearances. She also held assistant coaching roles at North Texas and Prairie View A&M and was head coach at Wiley College from 2006–2008.

A Houston native, Hayes was a standout player at Rice University from 2000–2004. She earned First Team All-WAC honors in 2003 and led the team in scoring, rebounding, blocked shots, and field goal percentage. She ranks third in program history with 142 career blocks and was 16th nationally in blocks per game during the 2002–03 season.

Hayes holds a Bachelor of Liberal Arts degree from Rice and a Master of Education from Prairie View A&M. She is the proud mother of two daughters, Khloe Perry and Zoie Perry.

Grambling, LA — Patrick Crarey II is ready for the second chapter of his HBCU experience as he begins laying a fresh foundation at Grambling State University. The veteran coach, known for his program-building success at Florida A&M and the NAIA level, was officially introduced as the new head coach of Grambling State men’s basketball, taking over a respected program with lofty expectations.

“This is indeed a proud day for Grambling State University and an exciting new chapter for our men’s basketball program,” Grambling State AD Dr. Trayvean Scott said at the Friday morning press conference.

Crarey is no stranger to the HBCU landscape. After guiding FAMU to its most wins since 2008 and a postseason berth for the first time since 2019, he has now been entrusted with continuing Grambling’s proud basketball legacy. The new Tigers head coach made it clear: he’s here to build a winner.

“As a builder, I lay the foundation, the new one myself,” Crarey said. “I’m about relationships, then championships… to enhance the brand of Grambling and to win at the highest levels.”

Crarey acknowledged the work of his predecessor, Donte’ Jackson, who led Grambling to multiple SWAC championships.

“Much respect to my brother, Donte Jackson, aka Tae Jack,” Crarey said. “He built this program with his bare hands. I will continue the tradition on the foundation of his success.”

Former FAMU head basketball coach Patrick Crarey.

Crarey gave special thanks to Florida A&M for his opportunity at the Division I level. “A special thank you to President Beard and Robinson at Florida A&M for giving me the opportunity to be a Division I head coach. To Angela Suggs, who I adore — thank you. From day one to the end, you worked for me and I’ll forever be grateful.”

He also acknowledged the support of former FAMU athletic director and current Virginia State AD, Tiffani-Dawn Sykes. “To Gram Fam, Tiffany Dawn Sykes — clap for her. What’s understood doesn’t need to be said. You believed before anyone. And I’ll always love you for it.”

Looking forward, Crarey offered a vision rooted in both competitive excellence and cultural pride.

“This move was about winning within an organization that believed in my capabilities from day one,” he said. “Today starts our new journey together… What you believe about yourself, others will believe about you too.”

“It’s time to let everyone know the Tigers are here.”

A Florida State assistant is expected to take a vacant HBCU basketball job.

Alcorn State is expected to hire Jake Morton as its next head coach, according to a report by Jon Rothstein. The move is the latest in a busy offseason across HBCU basketball, as Morton steps in to replace Landon Bussie, who left last month to take over at Chicago State.

Morton brings a deep resume to the HBCU ranks, having served as an assistant coach at numerous Division I programs and currently completing his first season at Florida State under Leonard Hamilton. His return to head a program aligns with Alcorn’s desire to maintain momentum after Bussie helped make the Braves a consistent force in the SWAC and the broader HBCU basketball landscape.

A former standout at the University of Miami, Morton played for Hamilton from 1989 to 1993, later returning to the Hurricanes as an assistant coach. He helped guide Miami to three straight 20-win seasons and a 2008 NCAA Tournament berth. His coaching path includes stops at East Carolina, Jacksonville State, Coppin State, and even an early stop at HBCU Bowie State, where he began his coaching career in 2000.

Jake Morton

Morton’s time at Jacksonville State marked one of the most successful stretches in program history, including an Atlantic Sun regular-season title and an NCAA Tournament appearance. His teams averaged 20 wins per season, a level of consistency Alcorn State fans will welcome.

Alcorn State is aiming to stay competitive in the SWAC and nationally among HBCUs, and Jake Morton’s hiring signals a commitment to experience and proven results. As HBCU programs continue to raise their profiles and invest in high-level coaching talent, Morton’s arrival is both a reunion with his roots and a chance to lead his own program after one year at Florida State.

Alabama State represented the HBCU experience well in this year’s NCAA Tournament. A miraculous full-court play in the waning seconds gave the Hornets their first-ever win in the ‘Big Dance’ with a 70-68 victory over Saint Francis (PA) in the NCAA First Four.

TJ Madlock was fouled with 12.4 seconds left and missed the front end of a one-and-one that could have broken the 68-68 tie. However, Saint Francis turned the ball over on the ensuing possession giving Alabama State the ball back with 3.4 seconds remaining. Alabama State threw the ball the length of the court for a wild play that ended up with the ball being tipped to Amarr Knox, who made the game-winning layup with 1 second remaining.

The play was one of many dramatic finishes in this year’s tournament, which was won by the University of Florida on Monday night. So did the play merit a spot in the prestigious “One Shining Moment” recap video that airs at the conclusion of the tournament?

One Shining Moment answer

Yes it did.

The play was edited down to five seconds and can be seen from the- 38-:43 second mark of the 3:02 long video. Mathematically speaking, 2.75 percent of the video featured Alabama State. So as it stands the official visual story of the 2025 NCAA Tournament can not be told without including the champions from the SWAC. You can see the video here.

Knox was featured in an Alabama State jersey in the storied video but we may never see him in the SWAC or HBCU basketball again. A week after hitting the game-winning shot Knox entered the transfer portal. The latest check of his social media accounts doesn’t have any information about Knox committing to a new school. He can return to Alabama State if he chooses but the expectation in today’s basketball culture is that he will not.

But for One Shining Moment, Amarr Knox and the Alabama State Hornets left us with one final reminder of 2025 that an HBCU can create its own magic in the Madness of March.

In one of the wildest examples of college basketball’s unpredictability, the newly crowned national champions, the Florida Gators, can be “connected” to the worst team in Division I basketball this season—through a chain of unlikely wins that includes several HBCU programs, culminating with Mississippi Valley State.

Yes, Mississippi Valley State. The Delta Devils, who finished 3-28 and dead last—364th out of 364 teams—in KenPom’s final ratings, somehow sit at the start of a whimsical “transitive property” path that leads directly to the Gators’ national championship trophy.

Here’s how the HBCU trail unfolds: Mississippi Valley State, an HBCU in the SWAC, defeated fellow HBCU Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Pine Bluff then beat Texas Southern, another proud HBCU program. Texas Southern took down Alabama A&M, another SWAC HBCU, who then beat Coastal Carolina. From there, the chain runs through Georgia State, Tulsa, and Temple before reaching Memphis, which beat Missouri—who, incredibly, handed Florida one of its rare losses during the season.

HBCU

So, by the twisted logic of “team A beat team B” all the way up the ladder, Mississippi Valley State—again, the 364th team out of 364—can lay a humorous, if entirely unofficial, claim to being part of the national title conversation.

This chaotic chain reminds us of the deep interconnectedness of college basketball and how, on any given night, even a struggling HBCU can topple a giant—or at least someone who eventually helps topple a giant. While it doesn’t change the standings, it highlights the competitive spirit alive across all levels, including the HBCU ranks.

In a season where parity ruled and madness reigned, it’s only fitting that four different HBCUs helped form a chain that connects college basketball’s basement to its summit.

A pair of offensive linemen have decided to make Jackson State football their home after a stint at Tennessee State. Alex Valbuena and Ace Meadows both announced on social media on Monday that they were committing to JSU.

Alex Valbuena, a 6-foot, 275-pound offensive lineman from Antioch, Tennessee, has been a dedicated member of the Tennessee State University (TSU) Tigers football team. After redshirting his freshman year in 2022, Valbuena played as a redshirt freshman in 2023 and continued as a redshirt sophomore in 2024. Throughout his tenure, he has worn jersey number 51 and primarily played the guard position. Notably, Valbuena started in the game against Southeast Missouri State on November 23, 2024. Prior to his collegiate career, he attended Lipscomb Academy in Nashville, where he earned first-team all-conference and all-state honors.

300 pound plus commitment for Jackson State

Ace Meadows, a 6-foot-7, 310-pound offensive lineman from Trenton, Tennessee, began his football journey at Peabody High School. There, he distinguished himself as a top offensive lineman recruit, earning recognition on the All-West Tennessee high school football team in 2023. In December 2023, Meadows committed to TSU, influenced by the leadership of head coach Eddie George, whom he described as “one of the most humble men I’ve ever met.” Meadows entered TSU as a freshman in 2024.

In the 2024 season, the Tennessee State Tigers’ offense demonstrated a balanced approach, averaging 190.0 rushing yards and 165.5 passing yards per game, culminating in an average of 355.5 total yards per game. The team scored 28 touchdowns—17 rushing and 10 passing—contributing to a total of 220 points for the season.

Eddie George left Tennessee State at the end of the 2024 season to take the head coaching job at Bowling Green. Jackson State won the 2024 HBCU National Championship with a victory over South Carolina State.

The HBCU basketball world got quite a shakeup last week when Donte’ Jackson left Grambling State to take over as head coach at Alabama A&M.

The three-time SWAC Coach of The Year recently spoke with the Ruston Leader about his departure from the Louisiana HBCU for its SWAC neighbor.

“They’re doing some things when it comes to the resources they have and what they’re trying to build up. That’s the name of the game now. Kids want to be paid and it’s not as much about the other stuff like it was. The dynamic is changing,” Jackson told the paper. “That’s not to say GSU wasn’t willing to do it.”

When pressed, however, Jackson suggested Grambling State’s stance on NIL, revenue sharing, pay-for-play, etc. were all still unclear.

HBCU Alabama A&M University Donte' Jackson

“It was described to me that, ‘Oh, well we’re doing a study, and we’ll see what we can do,” Jackson said. “But to be honest, I don’t know what it looked like going forward. I never got an exact answer on how that would work. It was up in the air. Like I said, they were doing a study.”

Jackson coached at Grambling State for eight seasons after being hired by Dr. Paul Bryant — the same man who just hired him at Alabama A&M. He did go out of his way to try to quiet any rumors of bad blood between himself and his former boss, GSU AD Treyvean Scott.

“He helped me elevate the program to its highest point ever. I have no problem with him. He’s a good man,” Jackson said. “I felt like we worked well together. It was a tough decision to leave.”

The bats were alive and well across SWAC baseball this weekend, as 12 of the 15 games played saw the winning HBCU team score double-digit runs. From Thursday through Sunday, offensive explosions were the theme, with several programs putting up football-like scores in key conference matchups.

Alabama State led the way with a jaw-dropping 25-9 win over Alabama A&M in a seven-inning game on Saturday, capping off a sweep in which the Hornets scored 49 runs in total across three games. Bethune-Cookman also showed consistency at the plate, defeating Mississippi Valley State with double-digit outputs in two of three games, including a 15-5 victory on Saturday.

Florida A&M swept Jackson State while scoring 11 runs in back-to-back games after a more modest 7-3 win to open the series. Texas Southern erupted for 20 runs in one of its two wins over Alcorn State, showcasing serious offensive depth.

Runs show up in Rivalries

Even one of the top HBCU rivalries—Grambling State vs. Southern—was packed with fireworks. Southern edged out Grambling in two high-scoring affairs, 15-14 and 16-12, solidifying the Jaguars as one of the hottest hitting teams in the league. Southern’s Cardell Thibodeaux is the second-leading batter in NCAA Division I baseball with a .470 batting average.

There were only three games where the winning team didn’t reach double figures: Florida A&M beating Jackson State 7-3, Texas Southern with a 5-1 win over Alcorn State and Bethune-Cookman’s 6-5 win over Mississippi Valley State.

Four of the top 50 NCAA D1 teams in batting average are from the SWAC: Alabama State (13th, .322), Mississippi Valley State (33rd, .310), Southern University (40th, .308), Bethune-Cookman (41st, .308).

With SWAC play heating up, this weekend’s scoring spree signals a shift in momentum toward teams with elite hitting depth—and serves as a warning to any pitching staff not on top of its game.

Jackson State’s spring game shifted indoors Saturday due to weather concerns, but the change of venue didn’t affect the team’s intensity. Originally scheduled for Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium, the scrimmage took place at the Walter Payton Center.

“All you’ve got to do is spot the ball with this team,” said head coach T.C. Taylor. “They’ll get after it anywhere.”

JSU, coming off a 2024 Celebration Bowl championship, are already focused on the 2025 season, which opens at home against Hampton on August 30. Senior quarterback Jacobian Morgan, who passed for 2,236 yards and 21 touchdowns last season, led first-team reps during the scrimmage. Though Morgan is the likely starter, competition remains with returners Cam’Ron McCoy, Parker Stofa, Ethan Terrell, and transfer Tyreke Starks. Taylor said another quarterback will transfer in this summer.

Replacing standout running back Irv Mulligan (1,245 yards, 13 TDs) won’t be easy, but Jackson State has depth. 2024 SWAC Freshman of the Year Travis Terrell Jr. took most of the first-team reps. He posted over 1,400 all-purpose yards last season. Emari Matthews and Nate Blount IV are also expected to contribute, as Taylor mentioned six to seven backs are in the mix.

Defensively, JSU returns key pieces like lineman Jeremiah Williams and linebacker Reid Pulliam. The unit ranked among the SWAC’s best in 2024, forcing 24 turnovers and recording 37 sacks. Transfers Khamauri Rogers (Mississippi State) and Carmelo Jones (Baylor) add to an already strong defense.

“We’re catching on fast,” Williams said. “We get better every day.”

The post Shedeur Sanders says Jackson State prepared him for NFL rebuild appeared first on HBCU Gameday.

Later this month, former Jackson State quarterback Shedeur Sanders will hear his name called at the NFL Draft.

The Colorado football star was asked recently how he felt about going to a losing NFL franchise. And he was candid as usual.

“I don’t think Jackson State or Colorado had a winning history before I got there,” Sanders told the media. “It’s just another day in the office, another year in the office for me. It’s the same thing over and over and that’s what I enjoy about it. Because I understand how to approach different situations and what to do different.”

While anyone who knows anything about HBCU football in particular and college football in general knows that Jackson State’s program DOES have a long-term winning history, it’s recent history prior his arrival with his father Deion Sanders wasn’t very good. JSU had a 15-19 record in the four seasons prior to Shedeur Sanders becoming its star quarterback. Sanders took over the team as starting quarterback upon arrival and led JSU to a 23-3 record with back-to-back SWAC titles in 2021 and 2022.

Sanders, of course, then left Jackson State to join his father at Colorado. He turned around another proud college program that had an even worse record over its preceding four seasons, going 15-33 before Sanders showed up. Colorado went 13-12 as Shedeur Sanders played even better at the highest level of college football than he had at an HBCU.

Records aside, Sanders’ focus is getting prepared for his professional career as he looks to be one of the top players taken in the NFL Draft.

“I’m just thankful for the opportunity and whoever drafts me — whatever pick — it truly don’t matter to me. Because I know in myself who I am and I know what I bring to the table,” Sanders said. “So whoever sees the value in that will be very lucky to get me.”

Terron Armstead, a former HBCU football star at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, announced his retirement from the Miami Dolphins on Saturday night, ending a storied 12-year NFL career.

Armstead, 33, announced the news at a party he hosted in Miami with several former teammates in attendance.

Terron Armstead had been one of the NFL’s premier offensive tackles since entering the league in 2013. Drafted in the third round (75th overall) by the New Orleans Saints from UAPB. Armstead quickly earned a reputation for his elite athleticism, technique, and leadership. A standout at the 2013 NFL Combine, Armstead turned heads by running a 4.71-second 40-yard dash — a rare feat for a 6-foot-5, 300-plus-pound lineman.

During his nine-year tenure with the Saints, Armstead became a cornerstone of one of the league’s most potent offenses. He protected future Hall of Famer Drew Brees‘ blind side and earned three consecutive Pro Bowl selections from 2018 to 2020. His agility and power made him a nightmare for pass rushers and a reliable presence in both the pass and run game.

Despite battling multiple injuries throughout his career, Armstead’s resilience and toughness have been widely praised. In 2022, he signed with the Miami Dolphins, bringing veteran leadership and much-needed stability to their offensive line. He played a key role in the Dolphins’ offensive resurgence, helping to protect quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and paving lanes for a dynamic rushing attack.

Armstead is known for his philanthropy and community engagement, off the field, particularly through initiatives aimed at youth development and education. He remains an inspiration to HBCU athletes, proving that talent, hard work, and determination can lead to success at the highest level.

The Trump Administration’s cuts have left a big void in the FAMU College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. President Donald Trump’s sweeping attack on diversity, equity, and inclusion will adversely affect the Tallahassee HBCU as the effects are beginning to materialize.

This week’s big headline was Trump’s threat to cut funding for a popular cultural institution. In his political cross hairs is the National History Museum of African-American History and Culture in Washington, D.C.  In Trump’s March 27 executive order, he contends that “improper, divisive or anti-American ideology.”  “Once widely respected as a symbol of American excellence and a global icon of cultural achievement, the Smithsonian Institution has, in recent years, come under the influence of a divisive, race-centered ideology,” Trump stated.

For years FAMU’s College of Pharmacy has maintained a grant for the National Institute of Health (NIH). The research studies unique treatments of cancer, enhanced study of AI, and several other key areas of study.  The grant also provided additional staffing for the school.  The sudden loss of $16.3 million that was budgeted for by the university presents a critical set of issues.  Donald Trump rescinded the award with his executive order on March 21.

Program dates back to the 1980s

According to an article on the FAMU College of Pharmacy Website, the program was instituted in 1985. The Research Centers in Minority Institutions (RCMI Program at FAMU was established through a grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) National Center for Research Resources (NCRR) as a congressionally mandated program to support minority institutions. In 2012, the RCMI Program was transferred to the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The RCMI Program had a tremendous impact on enhancing the research capacity and infrastructure at FAMU. It recruited promising researchers and established research infrastructure by acquiring advanced instrumentation, developing innovative biomedical research laboratories, funding research facilities, and providing other research support.

The sudden absence of those funds has placed a sense of urgency into FAMU’s own fundraising efforts.  The announcement of the cuts was made just days before FAMU’s annual fundraising campaign known as “1887 Strikes.”  FAMU was founded in 1887.  FAMU Interim President, Dr. Timothy Beard, encouraged Rattlers to dig deeper as the cuts will harm the HBCU.  The university has since appealed the decision.

THE HILL | Alabama A&M University President Dr. Daniel K. Wims and Director of Athletics Dr. Paul A. Bryant welcomed new AAMU head men’s basketball coach Donte’ Jackson during an introductory press conference at the Alabama A&M University Event Center on the campus of the HBCU.

“We welcome a coach with an outstanding resume, one that has won at the highest levels,” Dr. Bryant said.  Jackson, who has compiled a 263-185 career record in 15 seasons, is a three-time Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Coach of the Year honoree, guiding Grambling State to three regular-season conference titles in eight seasons, including a trip to the 2024 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament.

Excited to be on the Hill

“I’m incredibly thankful to Dr. Wims and Dr. Bryant for this opportunity,” Jackson said. “I am excited to be on The Hill and look forward to bringing a winning culture to this outstanding institution. I’m a program builder. It’s time to build this program into one of the best programs in the SWAC, the state, the region, and the nation…It’s time to build something that Bulldog Nation can be proud of… It’s time to build a winner, a championship program that can compete for titles each year.”

Jackson established himself as one of the best coaches in the HBCU conference during his first season at Grambling State. Where he helped the program win its first SWAC Regular Season Championship in nearly 30 years (1988-1989). During the regular season, Grambling State enjoyed the national spotlight as one of the teams in NCAA Division I with the longest winning streak, which reached as high as 11 games before a loss to Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

Success with a Rival

The Tigers reached new highs under Jackson during the 2022-23 HBCU basketball campaign. They finished the season 24-9, tallying their most wins in a single season since joining Division I in 1977.

GSU also defeated two Power 5 teams for the first time in school history. Earning wins over Colorado and Vanderbilt. The Tigers won the SWAC Regular Season Title and reached the 2023 SWAC Championship Game. Jackson produced the SWAC Player of the Year in Cameron Christon and won the coveted SWAC Coach of the Year Award.

Donte’ Jackson reached the pinnacle of the SWAC during the 2023-24 season, leading GSU to its first-ever SWAC Tournament Championship win and berth in the NCAA Division I Basketball Tournament. The Tigers went 21-15 overall and 14-4 in conference play. Grambling State defeated Texas Southern 75-66 in the SWAC Title game. GSU went on to defeat Montana State 88-81 in the NCAA First Four before falling to top-seeded Purdue in the first round.

Teniya Morant, the younger sister of Memphis Grizzlies superstar Ja Morant, has announced via her social media that she will be entering the NCAA transfer portal. This marks the end of her time with the Mississippi Valley State University (MVSU) women’s basketball team. Her departure from the HBCU program comes after just one season. Sparking interest in where the talented guard may land next.

Morant’s transfer adds a new chapter to her basketball journey. Which began with a standout high school career and continued with her commitment to play at the Division I level for an HBCU.

High School Career

At Houston High School in Germantown, Tennessee, Teniya showcased her prowess on the basketball court. Standing at 5-foot-3, she played as a senior guard and was instrumental in leading the Mustangs to a 16-6 record during her senior year. She averaged 12.6 points per game, 4.4 rebounds, 1.5 assists, and 1.4 steals. Notably, she achieved a season-high of 22 points in a decisive 70-45 victory over St. Agnes Academy.

Teniya’s dedication and skill on the court did not go unnoticed. Despite not holding any offers early in her recruiting process, her performance on the court drew national attention. Reminiscent of her brother Ja Morants’ under-the-radar recruitment before his emergence at Murray State.

Commitment to HBCU Basketball

In May 2023, Teniya announced her commitment to Mississippi Valley State University, an HBCU in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). This decision was major for both Morant and the HBCU, as MVSU was the first Division I program to offer her a scholarship in January of that year. Her commitment was met with enthusiasm, especially given her family’s history with HBCU hoops, as her father, Tee Morant, played basketball at Claflin University.

MVSU’s women’s basketball program had faced an uphill battle coming into Morant’s freshman season. The Devilettes finished the previous season with a 2-27 record and a 0-18 standing in the SWAC. Teniya’s addition was seen as a potential catalyst for revitalizing the team’s performance. Her high school coach, Justin Lewis, praised her tenacity and work ethic in an interview with The Commercial Appeal, stating, “They’re getting a tenacious player that gives it her all on the floor. Somebody that’s going to be vocal. She’s going to work hard.”

Teniya Morant appeared in three games during the 2024–25 season for Mississippi Valley State. Logging limited minutes and recording no points, rebounds, or assists. Her time on the court included short stints against Lipscomb, Arkansas State, and Alabama A&M, with a total of just 12 minutes played.

Transition and Current Status

In an Instagram post from April 3rd, 2025, Teniya Morant announced that she had decided to enter the transfer portal and leave the MVSU women’s basketball program.

HBCU Ja Morant transfer portal Teniya Morant

Teniya Morant’s journey underscores the dynamic nature of collegiate athletics, especially within HBCU programs. Her initial commitment brought hope and excitement to not only MVSU’s women’s basketball but HBCU women’s hoops as a whole. Now, her departure opens conversations about athlete transitions and the factors influencing such decisions.

Alabama Sen. Rodger Smitherman, D-Birmingham, voiced his concern when he found out that state lawmakers proposed the idea to cut funding for the annual Magic City Classic football game and several other signature items. The HBCU football clash between Alabama State and Alabama A&M takes place annually at Legion Field in Birmingham, Alabama.

While the popular HBCU classic showcases a pivotal battle for statewide bragging rights on the gridiron, it also draws record crowds, celebrates the tradition of both programs and creates a massive economic impact for the community.

Community Impact

In 2024, city leaders in Birmingham projected that the game and its festivities would generate more than $20 million in economic impact for the city, according to WBRC-TV. Even more, the game one that was played on Oct. 26  — was the 10th busiest day of the year in the Magic City.

“If anybody thinks that’s going to happen [cutting funding] and I’m not going to be at this mic from this moment until we leave, you can forget it,” Smitherman said, per AL.com. “I will be right here.”

The state’s proposed $3.7 billion budget included $200,000 for next year’s MCC. However, when the House Ways and Means General Fund Committee approved the General Fund budget on Tuesday, it axed out the funding for the annual classic. Rep. Rex Reynolds, R-Huntsville one of the chairmen of the state’s House Ways and Means General Fund Committee said the proposed move to cut events like the MCC was part of Alabama’s initiative to prioritize “budgeting” and “get back to funding state agencies.”

“As you saw when [Gov. Kay Ivey’s] budget came over, all of the one-time appropriations was removed from the budget,” Reynolds said, per AL.com.

Smitherman and Senate Minority Leader Bobby Singleton, D-Greensboro, convened with Reynolds and the state’s additional General Fund chairman, Sen. Greg Albrittion, R-Atmore, to discuss the proposed budget. When Smitherman took the senate floor later Tuesday afternoon, the veteran lawmaker said the Magic City Classic issue, along with others, would be reviewed.

Changes to the Budget

Singleton also confirmed to AL.com that changes would take place to the budget. However, he was not given a timeline on when they would come to fruition. State lawmakers have 12 meeting days left in its annual session, one that runs until May.

According to the Greater Birmingham Convention and Visitors Bureau Board, nearly 70,000 fans attended the Magic City Classic in 2024, keeping its tradition of being one of the most-attended HBCU football games of the year. If funding for MCC is cut off, it would limit the overall impact of the annual event, which Smitherman labeled as part of the state’s diversity, equity and inclusion programs.

As a result, Smitherman said he would exercise the Senate’s filibuster rules to shed light on the importance of this event as well as proposed cuts to other related items in the budget. “… If it [cutting funding] does [happen], it will happen with the most resistance using our rules and procedures that I can use in this body,” Smitherman said.

Grambling State head coach Mickey Joseph has coached at the Power Five/Four level as well as at multiple HBCU programs.

Joseph, who just wrapped up his first season at the iconic HBCU football program, recently did an interview in which he talked about the transfer portal.

The former LSU assistant and Nebraska interim head coach knows that the best players in his program will always be pursued by bigger schools with better resources — and most of the time they will lose.

“We understand,” Joseph told local media. “I think the kids understand if they’re here and they’re sophomores and they have a big year and a Group of Five or Power Five approaches them and they have the finances to pull them out of there and I can’t match the finances — then you know what — they’re gonna go. That’s part of it. Coaches been doing it for years. So we shouldn’t get mad as coaches when these kids make decisions to take care of their family. I’m going to say it again — coaches’ been doing it for years.”

However Joseph says he believes there should be some compensation owed when his HBCU or other schools lose players to bigger schools.

“But I also think there needs to be a buyout. If they move up from me and go up to a Group of Five/Power Five, I should get kind of a compensation for that. So NCAA, if you’re listening to me — I need a buyout.”

Joseph isn’t the first HBCU coach to propose such an exchange. Last year Norfolk State men’s basketball head coach Robert Jones.

“Unpopular opinion: what if college players have buyouts like college coaches?” Jones posted on X last May. “Players/coaches should be able to go wherever they want BUT when a coach leave(s) he has to pay back a buyout clause usually. Well what about if a player leave(s) he pays a % of his new NIL deal? Hmmmm.”

So far, there have been no official proposal to the NCAA on behalf of smaller schools looking to get compensation when losing athletes to bigger schools. Could the HBCU world lead the way on that?

Alabama A&M is set to make a big hire in the HBCU basketball landscape, as it prepares to announce Grambling State’s Donte’ Jackson as its next head men’s basketball coach. The news was first reported by HBCU Sports and confirmed by an HBCU Gameday source. Jackson will take over for Otis Hughley, who resigned last month after three seasons at the helm in Huntsville.

Jackson brings a deep well of experience across the HBCU coaching ranks. A Milwaukee native, he spent the last seven seasons at Grambling State, where he compiled a 120-102 record and won a SWAC Tournament Championship in 2024, earning the program its first NCAA Tournament appearance in over three decades. However, Grambling took a step back in 2024-2025, finishing 12-22 overall and 7-11 in SWAC play.

Before Grambling State, Jackson made his mark at Stillman College, leading the program to a 27-6 record and a DII second-round appearance in 2015-16. He also had a successful run at Central State, establishing himself as a rising name in the HBCU coaching ranks early in his career.

Danté Jackson, Grambling State

With a career coaching record of 246-166 and a SWAC Tournament record of 9-5, Jackson is known for his ability to build programs and compete for championships. His 2022-23 Grambling team went 24-9 and finished tied for first in the league, showcasing his ability to bring consistency and success to HBCU programs.

Now, Jackson takes over an Alabama A&M program seeking to climb the SWAC standings. His appointment signals that Alabama A&M is aiming high and investing in a proven winner within the HBCU basketball fraternity. The move keeps one of the SWAC’s most experienced coaches in the league, as the HBCU basketball coaching carousel continues to turn.

Grambling State, meanwhile, will have to find another head coach.

Florida A&M University (FAMU), one of the top HBCU football programs in the country, has filled a big hole in its football coaching staff by hiring Kenwick Thompson as its new defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. The news was first reported by the Tallahassee Democrat.

Kenwick Thompson Coaching Career

Thompson brings a wealth of experience to the Rattlers, having previously served in coaching roles at various FBS-level institutions. This won’t be Kenwick Thompson’s first foray into HBCU football. He spent 1994-2001 performing various coaching roles at Texas Southern University. Including assistant head coach, Recruiting Coordinator, and Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach.

Most recently, he was the assistant head coach and linebackers coach at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) during the 2023 and 2024 seasons under former NFL quarterback Trent Dilfer. His extensive coaching career includes positions at UNLV, Fresno State, East Carolina, Vanderbilt, San Jose State, California, and Texas Southern. Notably, Thompson was the defensive coordinator at East Carolina in 2016. ?

FAMU’s head coach, James Colzie III, emphasized the importance of hiring a coordinator with a proven track record and strong linebacker coaching skills. “When searching for our defensive coordinator. It was important to bring a coach in who had successful coordinating experience but also a bonafide linebackers coach. Coach ‘Wick’ checks both of those boxes. He’s had success at the FBS and FCS levels.” Colzie told the Democrat.

Thompson expressed enthusiasm about joining FAMU in a recently released statement. “I am honored to be a part of a rich history of excellence on and off the field. I’m excited to get to work contributing to that rich history.” Thompson continued, “I want to thank Coach Colzie for this outstanding opportunity to work with these great young men.”

The Rattlers will conclude their spring practice schedule with the Orange and Green Spring Game on Saturday, April 12, at 4 p.m. They will kick off their 2025 season on August 30 against Howard University in the Orange Blossom Classic at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium.

Alabama A&M University has earned recognition as a Research College and University (RCU) in the newly redesigned Carnegie Classifications of Institutions of Higher Education. This milestone achievement reflects the University’s commitment to advancing research through the innovative work of its HBCU faculty and students.

The Carnegie Classifications, established as the leading framework for categorizing accredited, degree-granting institutions in the U.S., have been redesigned by the American Council on Education (ACE) to better acknowledge the diversity and depth of research across higher education institutions.

The 2025 framework includes three key research designations: Research 1 (R1) for institutions with very high research expenditures and substantial doctoral production, Research 2 (R2) for institutions with high research activity, and Research Colleges and Universities (RCU) for institutions demonstrating research engagement at varying levels.

What it means for AAMU

“The 2025 Carnegie Classification’s Research and University aims to highlight research activity at institutions that have historically been overlooked due to lower numbers of doctoral graduates,” said Dr. Majed Dweik, Vice President of Research & Economic Development. “By setting a research expenditure threshold of at least $2.5 million annually, this classification ensures that universities like Alabama A&M receive well-deserved recognition for their contributions to research and development.”

Alabama A&M University has a longstanding tradition of research excellence at the HBCU, spanning multiple disciplines:

HBCU Alabama A&M University Carnegie RCU

Engineering and Computer Science: Researchers are driving advancements in quantum computing, magnetics, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, integrated circuit microelectronics/semiconductor design, fabrication, and testing (Chips), space propulsion and engineering, nuclear engineering thermal sciences, and material science and nanotechnology, including energy harvesting and computational sciences.

Education and Healthcare: Researchers are addressing critical societal challenges through projects such as the Alabama Recruit and Retain Minority Teacher Program, the Let Us Build Bridges Study Abroad Project in Zambia, and the $3.6 million Geriatric Workforce Enhancement Program.

Business and Public Affairs: Researchers are conducting impactful societal research on economic mobility, gender equality, STEM education participation, and much more.

AAMU faculty and leadership are optimistic that this RCU designation will attract top-tier students and researchers while enhancing the global research reputation of the HBCU. The University is actively pursuing the R2 designation, with current research expenditures for 2024 reaching $16.248 million – exceeding the R2 research expenditure threshold by $11.248 million.

“This new distinction spotlights our University’s emphasis on impact and discovery through diverse research activity. Thanks to the ongoing work of our faculty and staff to expand research across the institution, we are well-positioned in our efforts to reach R2 classification in the near future,” said President Daniel K. Wims.

Shaqir O’Neal, son of Shaq, has found a new home playing for a new head coach and former NBA star after leaving an HBCU and hitting the transfer portal.

O’Neal has reportedly committed to play for Sacramento State, which just hired Mike Bibby as its head basketball coach. The former NBA veteran was announced as the school’s head coach on March 25. O’Neal hit the transfer portal on March 29.

O’Neal is coming off the best season of his college career at Florida A&M, where he averaged 6.2 points and 3.7 rebounds per game. That included seven double-figure scoring outputs after having just one in his first two seasons. He scored a career-high 26 points against Trinity Baptist and scored 20 against Trinity, as well as a couple of double-figure games against SWAC competition. Shaq showed up in Atlanta to watch his son play in the SWAC Tournament earlier this month.

GRAMBLING, La. |  As part of its ongoing commitment to excellence and strategic growth, Grambling State University has partnered with College Sports Solutions (CSS) to conduct a comprehensive operational review of its intercollegiate athletics program.

The engagement, which officially began on March 17, 2025, is designed to position GSU Athletics for long-term success by evaluating current operations and identifying forward-looking strategies that align with the university’s mission, values, and future aspirations.

Dr. Trayvean Scott, Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics, expressed enthusiasm for the engagement and the opportunity it presents for GSU Athletics.  “This is about elevating every aspect of the student-athlete experience while ensuring the long-term sustainability of our programs,” said Dr. Scott. “CSS understands the landscape of HBCU athletics and the competitive demands of today’s college sports environment. Their insights will be invaluable as we strive to build a model athletics program grounded in integrity, innovation, and impact.”

The timing of this engagement is especially critical. As the landscape of NCAA Division I athletics continues to evolve—with ongoing realignment, expanding media rights deals, and the emergence of Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) opportunities—institutions like Grambling State must be proactive in evaluating how to remain competitive, compliant, and student-centered. This work will help ensure that GSU Athletics is well-positioned to thrive amid these rapidly shifting dynamics.

College Sports Solutions is a nationally respected consulting firm with extensive experience working with collegiate athletics programs, including several within the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC).

President Martin Lemelle, Jr. emphasized the significance of this initiative in advancing the university’s vision for athletic and institutional distinction.

“Grambling State’s athletic legacy is iconic, and our future must be just as bold. Engaging College Sports Solutions is a decisive step in ensuring that our athletics program is built not just to compete—but to lead,” said Grambling State President Martin Lemelle, Jr. “We are building a culture of excellence on and off the field, and this engagement will help us chart a path that honors our past while preparing for a dynamic and competitive future.”

The review will assess key components of the athletics program, including organizational structure, financial operations, compliance, student-athlete welfare, facilities, and Title IX/gender equity. It will also include benchmarking against peer and aspirational institutions to inform strategic decision-making.

The final report from CSS will include actionable recommendations and will serve as a foundational tool in the university’s continued strategic planning for athletics. Grambling State University anticipates completing the engagement by June 30, 2025.

Davon Barnes is no stranger to the bright lights of the NCAA Tournament. His path to this moment has been shaped by a standout career at Texas Southern University (TSU), an HBCU basketball powerhouse, before making the leap to the SEC at Ole Miss.

As No. 6 seed Ole Miss prepares to face No. 2 seed Michigan State on Friday in the Sweet 16 of the men’s NCAA Tournament, the 6-foot-4 senior guard hopes to help the Rebels continue their Cinderella run in March Madness. Friday’s contest marks Ole Miss’ first Sweet 16 appearance since 2001. In his lone season with the Rebels, Barnes is averaging five points and 3.2 rebounds, shooting 38.4% from the field and nearly 73% from the free-throw line in 20.3 minutes per game off the bench.

In the Rebels’ 91-78 second-round victory over No. 3 Iowa State, Barnes contributed four points, four rebounds, and one assist in 16 minutes off the bench. If Ole Miss can pull off an upset against the Spartans, the Rebels will advance to their first Elite Eight in program history.

Barnes’ HBCU Roots: Texas Southern Success

Before landing at Ole Miss, Barnes made a name for himself at Texas Southern, one of the most competitive HBCU programs in college basketball. A Memphis, Tenn., native, he played two seasons (2021-2023) at TSU, helping the Tigers win back-to-back Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Tournament championships and securing consecutive NCAA Tournament berths.

During his time at Texas Southern, Barnes started in 32 of 50 games, averaging 9.6 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game while shooting 43.7% from the floor. His strong performance at the HBCU level made him a key player for the Tigers, proving he could compete nationally.

A Brief Stop at Sam Houston Before the SEC

After his time at Texas Southern, Barnes transferred to Sam Houston State for the 2023-24 season, where he elevated his game further. He averaged 13.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game, showing his scoring ability against strong competition. His impressive season caught the attention of Ole Miss, leading to his move to the SEC.

Now, as Barnes competes in the NCAA Tournament once again—this time with Ole Miss—he carries the experience and grit he developed as an HBCU basketball player.

Tip-off for Friday’s matchup between Michigan State and Ole Miss is set for 7:09 p.m. ET at State Farm Arena in Atlanta.

The scholarship was intended to honor Caleb Wilson. A Southern University student and band member who tragically died in February in an alleged hazing incident. ?

Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill has threatened legal action against Boosie. Asserting that Wilson’s family was neither informed nor gave consent for the use of Caleb’s name and image in promoting the event. Murrill stated, “Caleb Wilson’s parents have advised me that they have not given consent and know nothing about their son’s name and image being used to promote this event.”

In response, Boosie took to social media to express his frustration and intent to counter the legal threats. He emphasized that his event had been planned and promoted well before Wilson’s untimely death, making it impossible for him to have exploited the tragedy for promotional purposes. Boosie stated, “MY EVENT WAS PROMOTED ON EVENTBRITE SINCE NOV 14. THIS INCIDENT HAPPENED A WEEK BEFORE MY EVENT WAS TO TAKE PLACE?? HOW THE F*CK CAN I CAPITALIZE OFF SOMEONE DEATH FOR A CONCERT. ”THAT AINT ME.”

Boosie Defends His Impact on the Community

Beyond defending himself against the legal threats, Boosie also highlighted his positive influence on Baton Rouge and the surrounding community. In a passionate response directed at Murrill, he wrote:

“GENERAL LIZ MURRILL U CAN CALL ME TOO. THE REVENUE I BRING TO THE CAPITOL CITY IS UNMATCHED. THE FUN N EXCITEMENT IS UNMATCHED. NO VIOLENCE 6 YEARS IN A ROW AT MY EVENTS. NOT EVEN A FIGHT N A CITY THAT MURDERS EVERY WEEKEND. INSTEAD OF TRYING TO BRING ME DOWN N TAKE FROM ME. MAYBE YALL SHOULD ALLOW ME TO BE PUT N POSITIONS TO MAKE A CHANGE N THE CITY.”

Boosie emphasized that his annual festival, which attracts thousands of attendees. Has remained violence-free for six years—something he sees as a stark contrast to the crime rate in Baton Rouge. His remarks suggest that rather than facing legal challenges. He should be recognized as a force for positive change in the city. Especially for HBCU students and alumni who benefit from the event’s economic and cultural impact.

The controversy has sparked a wider discussion on social media, particularly within HBCU circles. While some argue that Boosie’s intentions were honorable. Others believe he should have obtained explicit permission from the Wilson family before using Caleb’s name in connection with the event.

No formal lawsuit has been filed as of the publication of this article, but the situation underscores the importance of communication and consent when honoring individuals posthumously.

Aniya Gourdine never played in a women’s NCAA tournament game until Southern University’s landmark victory over UC San Diego in its first-ever NCAA Tournament victory. A victory that led the No. 16 seed HBCU into battle with No.1 overall seed UCLA in the Spokane 1 region first-round action of the women’s NCAA tournament. Before the Jaguars’ leading scorer stepped on the hardwood inside Pauley Pavilion for the 16 vs 1 matchup, Gourdine received an encouraging message from her former teammate and WNBA’s Chicago Sky star Angel Reese. Gourdine and Reese grew up in Baltimore and played basketball at St. Frances Academy, a private Catholic high school in the city.

“It’s your very first tournament and I’m super excited for you,” Reese said in a March Madness video on social media. “…We literally grew up together, literally were best friends growing up from third grade to high school. We was learning how to play basketball together, to winning championships together, to playing at high school together, to you going to college and I’m super proud of your growth on and off the court.”

While the Bruins defeated the Jaguars 84-46 in the opening round game, Gourdine finished with 10 points, two assists and one rebound. Prior to Southern’s first-round appearance in the tournament, the 5-foot-9 senior guard helped the Jaguars defeat the University of California San Diego 68-56 in the First Four round.

She also helped Southern defeat Alcorn State 64-44 to capture the program’s second Southwestern Athletic Conference tournament crown in three seasons and earned MVP honors in the event.

Gourdine played her first two seasons at Temple University before transferring to SU ahead of the 2023-24 campaign. Like Gourdine, Angel Reese played her final two seasons of college basketball at LSU — roughly 16 miles away from the Baton Rouge, Louisiana-based HBCU — and helped the Tigers win the 2023 women’s NCAA tournament national championship.

Southern finished the season 21-15 overall and 15-3 in conference play.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. |  When the Alabama State women’s basketball team opens the 2025-26 season in November, the HBCU will have a new head coach for the first time in 27 years.

“Coach Freda Freeman Jackson’s 27 years of unwavering dedication at Alabama State University has shaped the future of countless student-athletes,” said Vice President and Director of Athletics Dr. Jason Cable. “Her remarkable achievements, including multiple SWAC championships, induction into the SWAC Hall Fame, and the Alabama State Hall of Fame, speak to her talent, passion, and leadership.  Her legacy will inspire generations to come. Thank you for your phenomenal impact; you are an Alabama State treasure!”

Freda Freeman-Jackson, who has led the program since 1998-99, announced through a press release on Tuesday, March 25, that she would step down as the Lady Hornets’ head coach. The announcement ended a run that is unparalleled in ASU athletics. “As I stand here, reflecting on this incredible journey at Alabama State University, my heart is full of gratitude,” she said. “This program, this university, and this community have been my home, family, and purpose for so many years.

“Hornet Nation, you are one of a kind. Your energy, passion, and unwavering support fueled us every step of the way. This program is what it is because of you.” Freeman-Jackson led the HBCU program to 373 wins, three Southwestern Conference regular season titles, four conference tournament titles, and three trips to the NCAA tournament. She also led one team to the WNIT.

Record breaker

With Freeman-Jackson at the helm, Alabama State made its first-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament during the 2002-03 season when the Hornets won the regular season title with a 20-11 record and 15-3 in conference play. They won the conference tournament and would face eventual NCAA runner-up Tennessee in the first round.

She followed the next year with a record-breaking 108th victory, the most in women’s basketball history at the school. The Hornets returned to the NCAA Tourney in back-to-back years in 2014-15 and again in 2015-16.  In 2011, Freeman-Jackson posted her 200th career win and four years later her 250th career win. Freeman-Jackson coached 29 players who earned All-SWAC honors in her career, plus two SWAC Players of the Year in Britney Wright (2016-17) and Ayana Emmanuel (2022-23).

In 2019, Freeman-Jackson was inducted into the SWAC Hall of Fame, joining her husband, Lewis, as the only active members still coaching in the conference at the time. She was inducted into the Alabama State Athletics Hall of Fame four years later.

After competing with the Hornets as an HBCU basketball player between 1982 and 1984, Freeman-Jackson began her coaching career at the high school level at Loachapoka. She would join Johnny Mitchell’s staff as an ASU graduate assistant and then as an assistant to her predecessor, Ron Mitchell. She took over in 1998-99 and immediately led the Lady Hornets to a SWAC Tournament championship.

Jackson State defensive back Robert McDaniel has caught the attention of multiple NFL teams ahead of the 2025 NFL Draft, with the New Orleans Saints and Arizona Cardinals emerging as two of the most interested parties.

McDaniel met with both teams during the HBCU Combine and the HBCU Legacy Bowl, where he showcased his versatility and athleticism. He confirmed these meetings in an interview with Justin Melo of The Draft Network.

“I met with more than 16 teams,” McDaniel told Melo. “I had great meetings with the Ravens, Packers, Saints, Commanders, and Cardinals. Those are some of the teams that come to mind.”

McDaniel impressed scouts at the HBCU Combine, posting a 4.55-second 40-yard dash, a 38.5-inch vertical jump, and a 10-foot-8 broad jump. His production on the field has been equally impressive. After beginning his career at Alcorn State, he transferred to Jackson State, where he delivered his best season in 2024. McDaniel recorded 48 total tackles (30 solo, 18 assisted), 4 pass breakups, 3.5 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, and 3 interceptions.

Saints and Cardinals Eyeing McDaniel’s Versatility

The Saints have an immediate need at cornerback and could use depth at safety in the future, making McDaniel a potential value pick in the later rounds. Meanwhile, the Cardinals, who currently hold six picks in the draft but do not have a sixth-round selection, are also intrigued by McDaniel’s ability to play multiple positions in the defensive backfield.

“Honestly, just playing different positions helped me,” McDaniel told HBCU Legends when discussing his versatility. “Knowing the defense, knowing where I should fit, and being able to play corner, nickel, or safety. It shows how versatile I am. I’m a very fast learner, and that’s one of my strengths.”

Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon and defensive coordinator Nick Rallis value versatility in the secondary, which aligns with McDaniel’s ability to adapt to multiple roles. Though Arizona’s starting defensive backfield is largely set, adding depth with a player like McDaniel could be a smart move in a league that increasingly values defensive flexibility.

McDaniel Projects as a Late-Round NFL Pick or Priority Free Agent

Robert McDaniel is currently projected as a mid-to-late Day three NFL Draft pick or a priority undrafted free agent. Both the Saints and Cardinals could benefit from adding a versatile, high-upside prospect who has shown steady improvement throughout his collegiate career. Whether he hears his name called late in the draft or signs as an undrafted free agent, McDaniel’s ability to adapt and contribute across the secondary makes him a player to watch.

Florida A&M head football coach James Colzie III loves sports. He was a star athlete at Florida State, playing both football and baseball. The coach of the HBCU powerhouse from the SWAC recently went viral because of how he likes to spend his spare time pursuing his passion. Earlier this month, while FAMU was on spring break, Colzie made a trip to Starkville, Mississippi, for a surprising reason.

He took on the role of umpire during Mississippi State’s three-game softball series against Auburn. Colzie worked at third base on Saturday, first base on Sunday, and behind home plate on Monday for the finale.

Colzie III’s connection to the game is rooted in his family as well. His father, James Colzie, has been the softball assignor for Dade County Public Schools in Florida since 1975 and has served as an athletic director since 1991. In recognition of his contributions to high school athletics, Colzie was inducted into the Florida High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame in 2020.

His father’s Hall of Fame bio reads in part, “The Miami, Florida native began his officiating career in basketball, softball, and volleyball. To present, Colzie has officiated over 4,000 FHSAA contests and has appeared on a crew in 290 District Championships, 270 Regional Championships, and 36 State Championship games. His commitment and perseverance led him to become the Greater Miami Athletic Conference Commissioner of Commissions, where he played an instrumental role in recruiting and retaining officials and became a member of the FHSAA Officials Advisory Committee (1990-95).”

In 2024 Colzie led the Florida A&M Rattlers football team to a 7-5 overall record and a 5-3 mark in the SWAC, finishing second in the SWAC East. FAMU finished with a 4-1 record at Bragg Memorial Stadium. Despite a challenging 1-4 record on the road, the team ended the season on a positive note with a two-game winning streak. In 2023 FAMU won the HBCU National Championship under the final season of Willie Simmons as head coach.

Apple TV+’s Severance wrapped up its Season 2 finale with an unforgettable tribute to HBCU marching band culture. Jackson State University alumnus Tramell Tillman (’08) delivered a performance that had viewers buzzing and comparing the moment to Beyoncé’s HBCU-inspired Coachella performance.

“I graduated from Jackson State University, and their band is the Sonic Boom of The South, the best marching band in the entire world,” Tillman told TV Guide. “This is an opportunity to highlight my culture, to highlight the significance of HBCUs — the marching bands, the showmanship, the pageantry, the discipline, the excellence, the Black joy.”

Tillman’s passion for authenticity was evident in his dedication to making the scene as true to HBCU culture as possible. “I’m a perfectionist. I kind of grind, because I want to get it pristine,” he said during Severance’s PaleyFest panel in Los Angeles. “I picked up on it very, very quickly.”

HBCU Jackson State Severance
HBCU inspiration

The inspiration came from years of watching bands like Jackson State University’s Sonic Boom of The South, Bethune-Cookman, and Florida A&M. “I was in the marching band in high school. It is different from HBCU. But because I went to Jackson State University, I had the Sonic Boom of the South. Spent so much time watching them. I had to go back and look at the tapes,” Tillman told Us Weekly. “I was watching Bethune-Cookman and Florida A&M to get inspiration, and I hope I did them justice.”

Tillman’s journey to Jackson State University began after transferring from Xavier University of Louisiana following Hurricane Katrina. He switched his major to mass communication and graduated summa cum laude in 2008. His time at JSU, surrounded by the excellence of the Sonic Boom of the South, became the foundation for the sequence featured in Severance’s finale.

“These are stories that I dealt with myself being in corporate America or just being Black. So I wanted to bring credence to it and be very cautious of how we did it. It was a risk, and I’m glad that we had the license to be free and explore and let it be authentic,” he told Us Weekly.

The performance was more than a scene; it was a declaration of HBCU culture’s excellence. As Tillman continues his acting journey. He remains committed to uplifting his roots and honoring the legacy of institutions like Jackson State University.

UPDATE: Boosie responds to HBCU band scholarship controversy

Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill has announced her intention to pursue legal action against hip-hop legend Boosie Badazz for allegedly misusing the name and image of HBCU band member Caleb Wilson. The Southern University student died earlier this year in an alleged hazing incident. Boosie, a Baton Rouge native, had planned to honor Wilson by establishing a scholarship in his name. Funded by proceeds from his annual Boosie Bash music festival.

According to Murrill. Wilson’s parents were unaware of their son’s association with the event and did not consent to the use of his name or image in promotional materials. They have requested the removal of all references to Caleb from the event’s promotions. Murrill emphasized that the family’s understanding was that Boosie intended to contribute to an existing scholarship fund at Southern University. Without linking it to the for-profit event.

Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill speaks to WBRZ

“They have requested that his name, image, and any reference to a scholarship for him be removed from all promotional materials,” Murrill said, as Louisiana First News reported on behalf of Caleb Wilson’s parents. Murrill continued to say that the late Southern University student’s parents did not consent to their son’s likeness being used in “for profit” promotion.

WBRZ spoke with Murrill and reported that the family’s understanding was that Boosie wanted to start a band scholarship fund at the HBCU. Stating that he wanted to put money into starting a scholarship more than a week ago. And the discussion did not include the event.

HBCU Boosie Caleb Wilson Southern University

“All of this apparently came together in a very short order. And I think the promoters saw an opportunity to promote the event on the backs of people who just suffered an unimaginable loss,” Murrill told WBRZ. “It is just disgusting; they owe the family an apology. If they wanted to do this, the first people they should have asked was the family. Nobody has made any effort to put money in the scholarship, Boosie hasn’t even funded any of it.”

Additionally, WBRZ reached out to Boosie’s camp for a response to the statement released by the AG’s Office. WBRZ reported that Boosie’s camp stands by the interview that they gave to the ABC-affiliated television station in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on Friday.

Boosie Bash

Boosie, whose real name is Torence Hatch Jr., announced the Caleb Wilson Memorial Scholarship during the sixth annual Boosie Bash. A three-day rap festival held at Southern University. The event featured artists like GloRilla and DaBaby and was promoted as a fundraiser for the scholarship. In an interview, Boosie stated that he collaborated with Wilson’s father and others to establish the scholarship. Aiming to support future band students at the HBCU.

However, Murrill contends that connecting Wilson’s name to the event without the family’s consent constitutes a “dramatic misrepresentation and misappropriation” to support a for-profit endeavor. She criticized the promoters for exploiting the family’s tragedy for promotional purposes. Stating that Boosie had made no efforts to fund the scholarship. Murrill asserted that legal action is warranted due to the misappropriation of Wilson’s name and image.

The hopes and dreams of student-athletes often depend on how well they can perform on their direct opportunity to impress professional scouts.  For FAMU, it is known to have one of the largest Pro Days of any HBCU.  This week would be no different.  With about 16 scouts representing both the NFL and CFL. The showcase commenced on Ken Riley Field at Bragg Memorial Stadium.

In all, 14 Rattlers were weighed, measured, jumped, ran, shuttled, and drilled their way through the workout.  It is the interview of a lifetime.  Most football players dream of making it to the NFL, and Pro Day is the opportunity to see if the athletes are as advertised.

One player who helped his stock with a good Pro Day was on hand to cheer on his former teammates.  Now, with the New England Patriots, Terrell Jennings stood on the sideline as encouragement for the auditioning Rattlers.

“Your job is to put on a great show for the scouts out here and make a lot of money.” Jennings said.  “It feels good, man, to see I’m putting my family in a better position and gonna continue to do that as I continue on my journey on in the league. It feels good to see all my hard work is paying off and it’s still gonna pay off because I’m still putting the work to this day.”

Top Rattlers

The top FAMU players on the radars of the scouts were Kendall Bohler (defensive back), Jalen Goss (offensive lineman), Jamari Gassett (wide receiver), and Daniel Richardson (quarterback).  However, much like the past, the scouts are there to recruit talent.  Professional scouts are given much more credit for finding a “diamond in the rough” than they are for obvious professional prospects.  For HBCU athletes, Pro Day offers the opportunity to audition in the same way that the top players experience in the NFL combine.

Big opportunity

FAMU head coach James Colzie III watched closely as his players with exhausted eligibility went through the gauntlet of drills and prodding.  “You’ve got 15 or 16 NFL teams and two CFL teams. It’s an amazing opportunity for these guys, Colzie said.  “It’s a credit to the guys we’ve had in the past that have come from this program and have flourished at the NFL level.  There’s an opportunity.  The reason these scouts are here is primarily because of what these guys have done in their careers and what the guys in the past have done,”

Jennings complimented the skill level in HBCU football.   “I say HBCU football is good football as well.  Football on the next level, it may be a little faster, but other than that. The guys on the HBCU level have a good chance of playing in the NFL and can play in the NFL because as you can see you got Markquese Bell, and Xavier Smith, and a couple other guys.  Those guys are from my school, but it’s a lot of guys out here balling in the NFL right now. So you can’t just shut them out and I feel like everybody can ball on every level. It’s just about the right person to see you.”

Houston, TX—In a historic WNIT victory, the Texas Southern Lady Tigers defeated the Gaels of Saint Mary’s by a final score of 54-50 for the first WNIT win for the HBCU and its first postseason victory since 1981.

The Lady Tigers set the tone early with their intense defense, completely shutting down the Gaels’ offense initially. Despite this strong start, Texas Southern trailed 18-21 at halftime. However, they quickly regained momentum at the beginning of the second half. A layup and a successful free throw immediately tied the score, setting the stage for a thrilling second half.

Key Players

Nya Harmon emerged as a key player in the third quarter, showcasing her skills by dominating the boards and scoring crucial points. Her efforts and the Lady Tigers’ immaculate defense forced multiple turnovers from the Gaels, leading to significant scoring opportunities. A highlight of the quarter was a three-pointer from Aylasia Fantroy, followed by two made free throws from Anela Thomas, which stretched the margin to 33-23 in under a minute. By the end of the third quarter, TSU had established a solid 40-30 lead.

In the fourth quarter, the Lady Tigers were determined to seal the victory. They maintained their defensive intensity and continued to score effectively. With just 3 minutes left in the game, they led 51-44. However, the Gaels mounted a fierce comeback, cutting the deficit to just 3 points with 13 seconds remaining. Despite this late surge, the Lady Tigers held their ground and secured the win.

Sydney Bellamy, an HBCU senior at Florida A&M University (FAMU), felt compelled to do something in light of the passing of Southern University student Caleb Wilson.  Wilson, who died in what is being termed a result of hazing, was pledging Omega Psi Phi. A member of the collective of black Greek letter organizations known as the Divine Nine.

Bellamy’s why

Bellamy, herself a member of the Divine Nine and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Felt in her spirit that she would not just remain helpless but had to do something to show solidarity.

“Well, after the tragedy happened. I was just thinking on ways that our university, our campus could reflect on this and show our support for Southern University as well as Caleb and his family,” Bellamy said.  “The only way that I could really think of was a walk where we could bring all ‘D-9s’ together. That way it could be more effective and more transformative.”

The Walk

Starting from FAMU’s Efferson Student Union, the group of about 100 combined Greek-letter organizations walked peacefully around the HBCU to the main student services building. The Center for Access and Student Success, or CASS Building, is a trademark venue on the FAMU campus, with its huge bronze snake in front of it.

After completing the walk from the top of the campus to the bottom, a brief ceremony was held.  Victor Culpepper, Jr., an Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity member, read some brief comments after a short prayer.

The HBCU connection between FAMU and Southern University came in the form of a member of FAMU’s Delta Sigma Theta Sorority who knew Caleb Wilson’s brother. She called him during the brief ceremony, and over the phone, he thanked those for participating and how much it meant to him and his family in this difficult time.

Bellamy admitted that she had serious anxiety about stepping out of the box to form the event.  It was squelched when all of the people showed up to participate.  “It really does warm my heart just to have everyone here. All the different sororities and fraternities and just Greek life as a whole at FAMU.”

Culpepper felt the walk should be a new beginning for cohesion among Greek-letter organizations.  “I think that we should have that type of fellowship throughout the year. Throughout the fraternal year, sorority year.” Culpepper said.  “I think that it’s tragic, to say the least that we have to come to this this type of measure, but I think that like I said, the impact that its having on the immediate people who it was affected was shown today.”

The NCAA Tournament is known for its thrilling matchups and upsets. On the opening day of the 2025 NCAA tournament, there’s already a potential first-round upset brewing between the No. 1 seed Auburn Tigers and the No. 16 seed Alabama State Hornets. The Hornets, representing HBCU basketball, have garnered significant attention recently with their historic win in the First Four round of the tournament on an incredible last-second shot. Despite Auburn’s favored status, the Hornets aim to defy the odds and etch their names into March Madness history with an upset. One that is still possible as the Hornets head into halftime down 41-31.?

Alabama State played Auburn close early in the first half before going down by as many as 13 points with eight minutes to play in the half. The Hornets would go on a run and found themselves down only three, 34-31, with just over a minute remaining until halftime. The upset alert was ringing loudly until Auburn closed out the half on a 7-0 run to give them a 10-point, 41-31 lead heading into halftime.

Alabama State came in as 32 points underdogs to Auburn, indicating that bookmakers expected a dominant performance from the Tigers. ?Can the HBCU hoops champion keep up the stellar play and pull off the historic upset?

HBCU NCAA Tournament Alabama State Auburn
Betting Odds Overview
  • Point Spread: Auburn -32.5?
  • Over/Under (Total Points): 149.5
  • Moneyline: Auburn -8000; Alabama State +7000

These odds reflect Auburn’s strong season performance, boasting a 28-5 record and its status as a top seed. Conversely, Alabama State enters the tournament with a 20-15 record, having secured its spot by winning the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) championship.

Historical Context: 16 vs. 1 Seed Upsets

Historically, No. 1 seeds have dominated their first-round matchups against No. 16 seeds, holding a 154-2 record since the tournament expanded in 1985. However, there have been two monumental upsets.

  • 2018: The University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) stunned the Virginia Cavaliers with a 74-54 victory, marking the first-ever instance of a 16 seed defeating a 1 seed. ?
  • 2023: Fairleigh Dickinson University (FDU) shocked Purdue with a 63-58 win, becoming the second 16 seed to achieve this feat. ?

These rare upsets serve as motivation for teams like Alabama State, illustrating that while improbable, defeating a top seed is possible.?

Alabama State guard Amarr Knox is riding high after Tuesday’s game-winning layup versus Saint Francis in the NCAA Tournament. But he’s probably been on the proverbial Cloud Number Nine for the last month after proposing marriage to his girlfriend DaKiyah Sanders. Here’s the catch: she’s an HBCU star as well, playing point guard for the Southern University Jaguars.

Want even more Providence for this story? This week both the Alabama State men and Southern women won their first NCAA Tournament games in each school’s history.

Knox is a redshirt sophomore from Memphis, Tennessee who arrived at Alabama State in 2022. While Sanders now plays for Southern University, she began her career at Alabama State back in 2020. She played four seasons for the Hornets before transferring to Southern to play for the Jaguars this season.

According to Knox’s Instagram account, the two were engaged at least one month ago. He posted a picture of the two at an engagement party with the hashtag #engaged in the caption. Their journey has been intertwined ever since, both on and off the court.

Last week both Alabama State and Southern went on to win the SWAC Championship in Atlanta, earning automatic bids to the NCAA Tournament for the HBCU programs.

On Tuesday night ASU slid by Saint Francis in a back-and-forth affair at the First Four.

DaKiyah Sanders from Southern advances to the NCAA Tournament.
DaKiyah Sanders for Southern University at the SWAC Tournament in 2025.

The game was deadlocked at 68 apiece when the Hornets provided a dramatic finish that will surely make the “One Shining Moment” season recap at the Final Four. TJ Madlock was fouled with 12.4 seconds left and missed the front end of a one-and-one that could have broken the 68-68 tie. However, Saint Francis turned the ball over on the ensuing possession giving Alabama State the ball back with 3.4 seconds remaining. Alabama State threw the ball the length of the court for a wild play that ended up with the ball being tipped to Knox who made the game-winning layup with 1 second remaining.

Southern University on Wednesday night became the first SWAC women’s basketball program to win a NCAA Tournament game. Their 68-56 triumph over UC San Diego moves the Jaguars into the traditional first round of the tournament to face No. 1 seed UCLA on Friday night.

Alabama State will face No. 1 seed Auburn University on Thursday.

According to Sleeper Athletes Ladies Basketball, HBCU women’s basketball coach Dawn Thornton of Alabama A&M has been linked as a potential candidate to become an SEC head coach. Rumors have her name circulating as a candidate to become the next women’s basketball coach at the University of Arkansas.

The report concerning Thornton comes nearly a week after the Bulldog’s HBCU hoops season ended in the 2025 Southwestern Athletic Conference tournament in Atlanta. While a report has surfaced for Thornton as a potential candidate for the Razorbacks’ job, no official confirmation has surfaced that the Bulldogs’ coach is taking her talents back to The Natural State.

HBCU women’s basketball Dawn Thornton Alabama A&M

Former Arkansas women’s basketball coach Mike Neighbors resigned from his coaching duties on March 11 after eight seasons leading the Razorbacks’ program.

20 wins in year one

Dawn Thornton recently finished her first season at AAMU, guiding the Bulldogs to a 21-10 record overall and a 14-4 mark in SWAC play. Before her first year at AAMU, she spent five seasons as the women’s basketball coach at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, three seasons at Prairie View and one season at Division II Shorter University. During non-conference action in the 2023-24 season, Thornton led UAPB to a 74-70 victory against Arkansas.

AAMU finished third in the SWAC regular season standings in the 2024-25 campaign and earned the No. 3 seed in this year’s SWAC tournament. However, Alcorn State defeated AAMU 56-53 in the quarterfinals of the league’s postseason event. Despite the Bulldogs’ loss to the Braves, Thornton told reporters that she was excited about her team’s success this season — one that saw the program notch its first 20-plus win season at the Division I level — and was optimistic about the future of the program.

“We’re gonna get in the portal,” said Thornton after AAMU’s loss in the SWAC tourney quarterfinals. “That’s what my staff does. … We’ll go back and we’ll rebuild this team [Alabama A&M] next year. The thing that we will do differently, we’re gonna be able to get some kids that have more than one year. So we will do that as well.”

While the Bulldogs did not secure the automatic bid to the women’s NCAA tournament, the 20-win HBCU squad earned an at-large bid in the field of 48 teams competing in this year’s Women’s National Invitational Tournament, the program’s first appearance in the postseason event.

AAMU will travel to face SoCon foe Chattanooga (16-14) on March 22 at 2 p.m. ET at McKenzie Arena. The Bulldogs-Mocs contest winner will face Troy in the tournament’s second round.

Check out how FAMU pulled up to support its SWAC rival at the NCAA tourney.

Since Florida A&M (FAMU) joined the SWAC in 2021, an intense rivalry has rapidly developed. Which was put aside for a moment during this year’s NCAA Tournament. The Alabama State Hornets are the closest school to FAMU, at just over three hours, and fans of both schools have traveled well to competitions. ASU set a school record for home attendance against the Rattlers this past football season at 33,576.

With two of the league’s best baseball teams, comparable basketball teams, and strong fanbases, the Hornets-Rattlers rivalry is steadily growing.

On Tuesday, however, the rivalry was tabled as HBCU love took center stage. The Hornets, winners of the 2025 SWAC Basketball Tournament, were in Dayton, Ohio, to play St. Francis in the “First Four” round of the NCAA Basketball “March Madness” tournament. When the Hornets arrived, they were greeted by FAMU alum Rachel Blanks, who was sporting black and gold gift bags for the team.

“Orange and green run through my veins every day—FAMUly forever! But tonight, I’m all about that black and gold!,” Blanks said.  A member of the Greater Dayton Chapter of the FAMU National Alumni Association. Blanks has been a key component of the re-certification of the chapter that originally started in the 1960s, but was recently re-started.

The Alabama State Vice President of Institutional Advancement ties into the gesture.  Col. Gregory L. Clark is a graduate of FAMU and was President of the FAMU National Alumni Association.  The Dayton Chapter was formed under his leadership of the association.

“It’s one thing about unity among HBCUs, but it’s also about SWAC love,” Clark said.  For me to see my alma mater and a chapter that started under my leadership and do a great gesture to welcome the university I currently work at, it says a lot about character of the university, its grads, and the alumni association.  Coach Matlock really appreciated the gesture.  This chapter has been doing this year-after-year.  This is an annual thing with the group.  They stepped up and got it done.”

The Hornets would go on to defeat St. Francis 70-68 on a shot as time expired to advance to the field of 64.

The gesture has gone viral on HBCU social media.  The comments dig to the core of HBCU rivalries in that there is a point at which they don’t matter.

Alabama State will seek to keep its March Madness magic alive when the No. 16 seeded HBCU hoops champions face No.1 seed Auburn (28-5) on Thursday in the NCAA Tournament South Region first-round game at Rupp Arena.

The Hornets earned a first-round appearance against their in-state SEC foe after defeating Saint Francis 70-68 on Tuesday in First Four action in Dayton, Ohio. With the ball out of bounds and seconds to play in the contest, Hornets 6-foot-2 junior guard Micah Simpson lobbed a hail-mary pass down the court to his teammate, and 6-foot-3 sophomore guard Amarr Knox converted on a game-winning layup to lift ASU to its first NCAA tournament victory in program history.

Tuesday’s win marked Alabama State’s first NCAA tournament victory. The HBCU lost its previous NCAA tourney matchups that included Michigan State (2001), Duke (2004), Morehead State (2009), and UTSA (2011).

Auburn enters Thursday’s game as the top overall seed in this year’s men’s tournament. The Tigers lost to Tennessee 70-65 on Saturday in the semifinals of the SEC tournament. Tigers head coach Bruce Pearl led Auburn to its third SEC regular season title this season and the sixth in program history.

Series history between Alabama State, Auburn

Now, Alabama State head coach Tony Madlock will strive to guide his Hornets’ squad to a victory against the top team in the country in an Alabama showdown. Thursday’s contest marks the 10th meeting between the two teams, with the Tigers winning all previous contests against the in-state HBCU.

The last meeting between the Hornets and the Tigers took place on Dec. 3, 2015, when Auburn defeated Alabama State 80-78 in Montgomery, Alabama.

Their 68-56 triumph over UC San Diego not only secured their first-ever NCAA Tournament victory but also marked the first win for any SWAC women’s basketball team in tournament history.

This historic moment is the culmination of a season filled with perseverance and dominance. Southern, now 21-14 overall, claimed both the SWAC regular season and tournament titles to earn their spot in March Madness.

Their performance against UC San Diego showcased the depth and tenacity of the HBCU squad, led by standout contributions from Aniya Gourdine (17 points, 7 rebounds) and Soniya Reed (24 points, 3 three-pointers).

Alcorn State men’s basketball coach Landon Bussie is set to leave the HBCU to become the next head coach at Chicago State, according to Jeff Goodman of The Field of 68.

Reports of Bussie becoming the Cougars next basketball coach were first reported by Adam Nelson. The news comes six days after the Braves’ elimination from the 2025 Southwestern Athletic Conference tournament in Atlanta. Bethune Cookman defeated Alcorn 69-60 on Thursday in the quarterfinals of the conference tournament.

This season, the 37-year-old led the Braves to a 11-21 mark overall and a 7-11 finish in Southwestern Athletic Conference play. Alcorn earned the No. 6 seed in this year’s SWAC tournament. In five seasons, Bussie compiled a 66-83 record overall while finishing 59-26 in conference action.

During his tenure, Bussie led the HBCU to back-to-back SWAC regular-season championships in 2022 and 2023 and earned SWAC Coach of the Year honors those same years. The Braves’ regular-season success also resulted in the program earning consecutive appearances in the National Invitational Tournament in 2022 and 2023.

Prior to Alcorn, Bussie served as an assistant coach at Prairie View from 2014 to 2020 and as an assistant at NAIA HBCU Xavier in Louisiana from 2010 to 2013.

Now, Bussie joins a Cougars’ program that finished 4-28 overall and 4-12 in Northeast Conference action. Chicago State parted ways with former head coach Scott Spinelli on March 7.

Despite the rough 2024-25 campaign, the Cougars appeared in the 2024 College Basketball Invitational tournament, making a second-round appearance in the event.

Carson Vinson, a standout HBCU football offensive tackle from Alabama A&M University, has been making big strides in his pursuit of an NFL career. Standing at an imposing 6-foot-7 and weighing 314 pounds, Vinson’s physical attributes have garnered attention from scouts and analysts alike. After standout performances at the Senior Bowl and NFL Combine. Vinson participated in the pro day with Alabama football, one of the top NFL-producing programs in the country. Giving scouts a more intimate look at one of HBCU football’s best alongside some of the top prospects in the 2025 NFL draft.

Collegiate Career at Alabama A&M

Vinson’s tenure at Alabama A&M was marked by consistency and excellence. As a four-year starter at left tackle, he anchored the Bulldogs’ offensive line, participating in 48 career starts. His performance in the 2024 season earned him First-Team All-SWAC honors. Solidifying his status as one of the best in HBCU football.

Senior Bowl Performance

Vinson’s invitation to the 2025 Senior Bowl allowed him to showcase his skills against top-tier talent. Throughout the practices, he impressed observers with his physicality and technique. “I’m not some charity case, just happy to be here.” Vinson told reporters after the first day of practice at the Reese’s Senior Bowl. “One big thing was my competition and my weight… And I came here and weighed in at a good weight, and that brings confidence. And when you have to strengthen your focus and strengthen your hands when you come here to basically compete against the best. So it was great to show NFL scouts what my skill set was.”

NFL Combine Results

At the NFL Scouting Combine, Vinson continued to display his athleticism and strength.

  • 40-yard dash: 5.12 seconds
  • Vertical jump: 28.5 inches
  • Broad jump: 9 feet 3 inches
  • Bench press: 24 reps
  • Three-cone drill: 7.85 seconds

Draft Projections

Analysts have noted Vinson’s potential as a developmental tackle in the NFL. His size, length, and athleticism position him well for the next level. While some projections have listed him as the 37th offensive lineman, suggesting a sixth-round selection. His recent performances could elevate him to a mid-round pick. Jordan Reid, former NCCU quarterback turned NFL analyst, reported, “Scouts were complimentary after his performance at the Senior Bowl and Combine with mid-round grades.”

Participation in Alabama’s Pro Day

In a strategic move to further elevate his visibility, Carson Vinson participated in the University of Alabama’s Pro Day on March 19, 2025. This event attracted a significant number of NFL scouts, coaches, and general managers, providing Vinson with a broader platform to demonstrate his capabilities. His decision to work out at a larger program’s pro day underscores a growing trend among HBCU players seeking increased exposure with NFL scouts.

HBCU Representation at Pro Days

Vinson’s participation at Alabama football’s Pro Day highlights the need to increase visibility for HBCU athletes who want to hear their names called at the NFL Draft. By attending pro days at larger programs, these players can demonstrate their skills to more scouts and get more one-on-one time with pro evaluators. Giving them a chance to form a personal connection with NFL decision-makers beyond just the bullet points of individual measurables. This approach is a strategic effort to bridge the exposure gap between HBCU athletes and those from more prominent programs. Potentially improving their draft prospects.

Carson Vinson’s journey from Alabama A&M to the cusp of an NFL career. Speaks to the determination and strategic planning of HBCU football players looking to go pro. His collegiate achievements and strong performances at the Senior Bowl and NFL Combine have positioned him as a notable prospect in the 2025 NFL Draft. But Vinson continues to leverage opportunities like Alabama’s Pro Day to further his chances of advancing his career to the next level. A process that future HBCU athletes may follow.
