THE HILL | Alabama A&M University President Dr. Daniel K. Wims and Director of Athletics Dr. Paul A. Bryant welcomed new AAMU head men’s basketball coach Donte’ Jackson during an introductory press conference at the Alabama A&M University Event Center on the campus of the HBCU.

“We welcome a coach with an outstanding resume, one that has won at the highest levels,” Dr. Bryant said. Jackson, who has compiled a 263-185 career record in 15 seasons, is a three-time Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Coach of the Year honoree, guiding Grambling State to three regular-season conference titles in eight seasons, including a trip to the 2024 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament.

Excited to be on the Hill

“I’m incredibly thankful to Dr. Wims and Dr. Bryant for this opportunity,” Jackson said. “I am excited to be on The Hill and look forward to bringing a winning culture to this outstanding institution. I’m a program builder. It’s time to build this program into one of the best programs in the SWAC, the state, the region, and the nation…It’s time to build something that Bulldog Nation can be proud of… It’s time to build a winner, a championship program that can compete for titles each year.”

Jackson established himself as one of the best coaches in the HBCU conference during his first season at Grambling State. Where he helped the program win its first SWAC Regular Season Championship in nearly 30 years (1988-1989). During the regular season, Grambling State enjoyed the national spotlight as one of the teams in NCAA Division I with the longest winning streak, which reached as high as 11 games before a loss to Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

Success with a Rival

The Tigers reached new highs under Jackson during the 2022-23 HBCU basketball campaign. They finished the season 24-9, tallying their most wins in a single season since joining Division I in 1977.

GSU also defeated two Power 5 teams for the first time in school history. Earning wins over Colorado and Vanderbilt. The Tigers won the SWAC Regular Season Title and reached the 2023 SWAC Championship Game. Jackson produced the SWAC Player of the Year in Cameron Christon and won the coveted SWAC Coach of the Year Award.

Donte’ Jackson reached the pinnacle of the SWAC during the 2023-24 season, leading GSU to its first-ever SWAC Tournament Championship win and berth in the NCAA Division I Basketball Tournament. The Tigers went 21-15 overall and 14-4 in conference play. Grambling State defeated Texas Southern 75-66 in the SWAC Title game. GSU went on to defeat Montana State 88-81 in the NCAA First Four before falling to top-seeded Purdue in the first round.

Alabama Sen. Rodger Smitherman, D-Birmingham, voiced his concern when he found out that state lawmakers proposed the idea to cut funding for the annual Magic City Classic football game and several other signature items. The HBCU football clash between Alabama State and Alabama A&M takes place annually at Legion Field in Birmingham, Alabama.

While the popular HBCU classic showcases a pivotal battle for statewide bragging rights on the gridiron, it also draws record crowds, celebrates the tradition of both programs and creates a massive economic impact for the community.

Community Impact

In 2024, city leaders in Birmingham projected that the game and its festivities would generate more than $20 million in economic impact for the city, according to WBRC-TV. Even more, the game one that was played on Oct. 26 — was the 10th busiest day of the year in the Magic City.

“If anybody thinks that’s going to happen [cutting funding] and I’m not going to be at this mic from this moment until we leave, you can forget it,” Smitherman said, per AL.com. “I will be right here.”

The state’s proposed $3.7 billion budget included $200,000 for next year’s MCC. However, when the House Ways and Means General Fund Committee approved the General Fund budget on Tuesday, it axed out the funding for the annual classic. Rep. Rex Reynolds, R-Huntsville one of the chairmen of the state’s House Ways and Means General Fund Committee said the proposed move to cut events like the MCC was part of Alabama’s initiative to prioritize “budgeting” and “get back to funding state agencies.”

“As you saw when [Gov. Kay Ivey’s] budget came over, all of the one-time appropriations was removed from the budget,” Reynolds said, per AL.com.

Smitherman and Senate Minority Leader Bobby Singleton, D-Greensboro, convened with Reynolds and the state’s additional General Fund chairman, Sen. Greg Albrittion, R-Atmore, to discuss the proposed budget. When Smitherman took the senate floor later Tuesday afternoon, the veteran lawmaker said the Magic City Classic issue, along with others, would be reviewed.

Changes to the Budget

Singleton also confirmed to AL.com that changes would take place to the budget. However, he was not given a timeline on when they would come to fruition. State lawmakers have 12 meeting days left in its annual session, one that runs until May.

According to the Greater Birmingham Convention and Visitors Bureau Board, nearly 70,000 fans attended the Magic City Classic in 2024, keeping its tradition of being one of the most-attended HBCU football games of the year. If funding for MCC is cut off, it would limit the overall impact of the annual event, which Smitherman labeled as part of the state’s diversity, equity and inclusion programs.

As a result, Smitherman said he would exercise the Senate’s filibuster rules to shed light on the importance of this event as well as proposed cuts to other related items in the budget. “… If it [cutting funding] does [happen], it will happen with the most resistance using our rules and procedures that I can use in this body,” Smitherman said.

Alabama A&M is set to make a big hire in the HBCU basketball landscape, as it prepares to announce Grambling State’s Donte’ Jackson as its next head men’s basketball coach. The news was first reported by HBCU Sports and confirmed by an HBCU Gameday source. Jackson will take over for Otis Hughley, who resigned last month after three seasons at the helm in Huntsville.

Jackson brings a deep well of experience across the HBCU coaching ranks. A Milwaukee native, he spent the last seven seasons at Grambling State, where he compiled a 120-102 record and won a SWAC Tournament Championship in 2024, earning the program its first NCAA Tournament appearance in over three decades. However, Grambling took a step back in 2024-2025, finishing 12-22 overall and 7-11 in SWAC play.

Before Grambling State, Jackson made his mark at Stillman College, leading the program to a 27-6 record and a DII second-round appearance in 2015-16. He also had a successful run at Central State, establishing himself as a rising name in the HBCU coaching ranks early in his career.

Danté Jackson, Grambling State

With a career coaching record of 246-166 and a SWAC Tournament record of 9-5, Jackson is known for his ability to build programs and compete for championships. His 2022-23 Grambling team went 24-9 and finished tied for first in the league, showcasing his ability to bring consistency and success to HBCU programs.

Now, Jackson takes over an Alabama A&M program seeking to climb the SWAC standings. His appointment signals that Alabama A&M is aiming high and investing in a proven winner within the HBCU basketball fraternity. The move keeps one of the SWAC’s most experienced coaches in the league, as the HBCU basketball coaching carousel continues to turn.

Grambling State, meanwhile, will have to find another head coach.

Alabama A&M University has earned recognition as a Research College and University (RCU) in the newly redesigned Carnegie Classifications of Institutions of Higher Education. This milestone achievement reflects the University’s commitment to advancing research through the innovative work of its HBCU faculty and students.

The Carnegie Classifications, established as the leading framework for categorizing accredited, degree-granting institutions in the U.S., have been redesigned by the American Council on Education (ACE) to better acknowledge the diversity and depth of research across higher education institutions.

The 2025 framework includes three key research designations: Research 1 (R1) for institutions with very high research expenditures and substantial doctoral production, Research 2 (R2) for institutions with high research activity, and Research Colleges and Universities (RCU) for institutions demonstrating research engagement at varying levels.

What it means for AAMU

“The 2025 Carnegie Classification’s Research and University aims to highlight research activity at institutions that have historically been overlooked due to lower numbers of doctoral graduates,” said Dr. Majed Dweik, Vice President of Research & Economic Development. “By setting a research expenditure threshold of at least $2.5 million annually, this classification ensures that universities like Alabama A&M receive well-deserved recognition for their contributions to research and development.”

Alabama A&M University has a longstanding tradition of research excellence at the HBCU, spanning multiple disciplines:

HBCU Alabama A&M University Carnegie RCU

Engineering and Computer Science: Researchers are driving advancements in quantum computing, magnetics, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, integrated circuit microelectronics/semiconductor design, fabrication, and testing (Chips), space propulsion and engineering, nuclear engineering thermal sciences, and material science and nanotechnology, including energy harvesting and computational sciences.

Education and Healthcare: Researchers are addressing critical societal challenges through projects such as the Alabama Recruit and Retain Minority Teacher Program, the Let Us Build Bridges Study Abroad Project in Zambia, and the $3.6 million Geriatric Workforce Enhancement Program.

Business and Public Affairs: Researchers are conducting impactful societal research on economic mobility, gender equality, STEM education participation, and much more.

AAMU faculty and leadership are optimistic that this RCU designation will attract top-tier students and researchers while enhancing the global research reputation of the HBCU. The University is actively pursuing the R2 designation, with current research expenditures for 2024 reaching $16.248 million – exceeding the R2 research expenditure threshold by $11.248 million.

“This new distinction spotlights our University’s emphasis on impact and discovery through diverse research activity. Thanks to the ongoing work of our faculty and staff to expand research across the institution, we are well-positioned in our efforts to reach R2 classification in the near future,” said President Daniel K. Wims.

According to Sleeper Athletes Ladies Basketball, HBCU women’s basketball coach Dawn Thornton of Alabama A&M has been linked as a potential candidate to become an SEC head coach. Rumors have her name circulating as a candidate to become the next women’s basketball coach at the University of Arkansas.

The report concerning Thornton comes nearly a week after the Bulldog’s HBCU hoops season ended in the 2025 Southwestern Athletic Conference tournament in Atlanta. While a report has surfaced for Thornton as a potential candidate for the Razorbacks’ job, no official confirmation has surfaced that the Bulldogs’ coach is taking her talents back to The Natural State.

HBCU women’s basketball Dawn Thornton Alabama A&M

Former Arkansas women’s basketball coach Mike Neighbors resigned from his coaching duties on March 11 after eight seasons leading the Razorbacks’ program.

20 wins in year one

Dawn Thornton recently finished her first season at AAMU, guiding the Bulldogs to a 21-10 record overall and a 14-4 mark in SWAC play. Before her first year at AAMU, she spent five seasons as the women’s basketball coach at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, three seasons at Prairie View and one season at Division II Shorter University. During non-conference action in the 2023-24 season, Thornton led UAPB to a 74-70 victory against Arkansas.

AAMU finished third in the SWAC regular season standings in the 2024-25 campaign and earned the No. 3 seed in this year’s SWAC tournament. However, Alcorn State defeated AAMU 56-53 in the quarterfinals of the league’s postseason event. Despite the Bulldogs’ loss to the Braves, Thornton told reporters that she was excited about her team’s success this season — one that saw the program notch its first 20-plus win season at the Division I level — and was optimistic about the future of the program.

“We’re gonna get in the portal,” said Thornton after AAMU’s loss in the SWAC tourney quarterfinals. “That’s what my staff does. … We’ll go back and we’ll rebuild this team [Alabama A&M] next year. The thing that we will do differently, we’re gonna be able to get some kids that have more than one year. So we will do that as well.”

While the Bulldogs did not secure the automatic bid to the women’s NCAA tournament, the 20-win HBCU squad earned an at-large bid in the field of 48 teams competing in this year’s Women’s National Invitational Tournament, the program’s first appearance in the postseason event.

AAMU will travel to face SoCon foe Chattanooga (16-14) on March 22 at 2 p.m. ET at McKenzie Arena. The Bulldogs-Mocs contest winner will face Troy in the tournament’s second round.

While some projections have listed him as the 37th offensive lineman, suggesting a sixth-round selection. His recent performances could elevate him to a mid-round pick. Jordan Reid, former NCCU quarterback turned NFL analyst, reported, “Scouts were complimentary after his performance at the Senior Bowl and Combine with mid-round grades.”

Participation in Alabama’s Pro Day

In a strategic move to further elevate his visibility, Carson Vinson participated in the University of Alabama’s Pro Day on March 19, 2025. This event attracted a significant number of NFL scouts, coaches, and general managers, providing Vinson with a broader platform to demonstrate his capabilities. His decision to work out at a larger program’s pro day underscores a growing trend among HBCU players seeking increased exposure with NFL scouts.

HBCU Representation at Pro Days

Vinson’s participation at Alabama football’s Pro Day highlights the need to increase visibility for HBCU athletes who want to hear their names called at the NFL Draft. By attending pro days at larger programs, these players can demonstrate their skills to more scouts and get more one-on-one time with pro evaluators. Giving them a chance to form a personal connection with NFL decision-makers beyond just the bullet points of individual measurables. This approach is a strategic effort to bridge the exposure gap between HBCU athletes and those from more prominent programs. Potentially improving their draft prospects.

Carson Vinson’s journey from Alabama A&M to the cusp of an NFL career. Speaks to the determination and strategic planning of HBCU football players looking to go pro. His collegiate achievements and strong performances at the Senior Bowl and NFL Combine have positioned him as a notable prospect in the 2025 NFL Draft. But Vinson continues to leverage opportunities like Alabama’s Pro Day to further his chances of advancing his career to the next level. A process that future HBCU athletes may follow.

The largest HBCU football game of the year — the Magic City Classic — will now be sponsored by Amazon.

The game between Alabama A&M University and Alabama State University will be known as the Amazon Magic City Classic presented by Coca-Cola, officials announced on Thursday. McDonald’s was the previous title sponsor.

“This four-year partnership represents a shared commitment to education, diversity and economic growth in our community,” said Perren King, the executive director of the Magic City Classic. “We look forward to working with Amazon to elevate the Classic experience for our fans and the broader HBCU family.”

The Magic City Classic has been a staple in Birmingham for more than 80 years, but the last few years have seen a push to get more money to the institutions. Alabama A&M sent promoters a cease-and-desist back in 2023 as terms were re-negotiated. Alabama A&M signed on to receive $1 million when the Bulldogs are designated as the home team, and $300,000 when they are visitors. Alabama State signed a four-year agreement to receive $1.5 million during the years that it is the home team. Adding in $500,000 annually to each of the institutions, the two schools are set to receive an average of $1.5 million over four years.

“Through this partnership with the Magic City Classic, we’re celebrating HBCUs as a legacy of excellence while investing in tomorrow’s leaders,” said Donetta Houser-Sly, HR Director, Amazon North America People Experience & Technology. “This historic game isn’t just about football — it’s about community, opportunity, and the endless possibilities that arise when tradition meets innovation.”

The post NFL dreams at risk for FCS players who bypass transfer portal appeared first on HBCU Gameday.

]]>
The route for HBCU and other non-Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) college football players seeking to achieve their NFL dreams could become even harder in the future due to the impact of the transfer portal and lack of access to the annual NFL combine, according to a recent ESPN report.

Some of the greatest NFL players like Walter Payton, Jerry Rice, Aeneas Williams, Shannon Sharpe and Michael Strahan played at HBCUs – today’s Football Championship Subdivision level programs – before dominating at the NFL level. However, when the Pro Football Hall of Famers played in college, they didn’t have access to name, image and likeness nor were they forced to deal with the impact of the transfer portal.

Only seven (FCS) players were invited to the 2025 NFL Combine nearly a week ago in Indianapolis. With the seismic changes to the transfer portal that took place ahead of the 2021 college football season, along with last year’s amendment to the transfer rule of allowing programs unlimited players to transfer without penalties (barring they met academic obligations), it has resulted in fewer FCS players receiving an invite to the NFL’s weeklong showcase at Lucas Oil Stadium due to the perception of more NFL-ready talent at the FBS ranks.

NFL red flags for non-transfers?

Zach McKinnell, editor and owner of FCS Football Central, reported Tuesday on X (formerly known as Twitter) that multiple scouts from professional football teams who attended the Senior Bowl and HBCU Legacy Bowl revealed that FCS prospects who choose to remain at the FCS level instead of darting for FBS programs are labeled as “potential red flags” at the next level.

“Were they scared of better competition, are they not good enough to play at that level?” McKinnell tweeted.

ESPN’s Kalyn Kahler reported that an average of 20.5 players from smaller non-FBS programs received invites to the combine between 2016 to 2021, prior to changes to the transfer portal. However, the mean number of players has dropped to 14.5 since 2022, the lowest mark in the last decade.

Even more, no players from the Division II or the Division III ranks earned invites to the last two combines. But prior to changes to the transfer rule, an average of 3.5 sub-FCS players earned combine invites from 2015 to 2021, per the report.

The report also indicated that 126 of the 330 players who received invites to the combine transferred at some level of college football at least once, with many of the players taking their talents to programs on the same level. Additionally, 28 of those 330 have transferred no less than once from a non-FBS program. Compare that to the 2018 combine, an event where only two players among 336 invited players transferred to a higher-level college football program – meaning NAIA to D-II or FCS to FBS – after playing at a non-FBS program.

Some of the higher-profile HBCU prospects hoping to hear their names called in this year’s NFL draft include Alabama A&M’s Carson Vinson and Donovan Eaglin, Jackson State’s Irv Mulligan and Robert McDaniel, Florida A&M’s Kendall Bohler, Howard’s Jarrett Hunter, Virginia Union’s Jada Byers, Hampton’s Elijah Burris, South Carolina State’s Aaron Smith and Alabama State’s James Burgess, to name a few.

The 2025 NFL draft will take place April 24-26 at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

Carson Vinson, a standout offensive tackle from Alabama A&M, an HBCU in Huntsville, Alabama, has been making waves in the lead-up to the 2025 NFL Draft. Standing at 6-foot-6 and weighing 305 pounds, Vinson’s impressive physical attributes and on-field performance have garnered attention from scouts and analysts alike. Vinson’s journey to the NFL Combine is particularly noteworthy as he was the first HBCU prospect to receive a Senior Bowl invite this year.

His participation in the Senior Bowl provided him with a platform to showcase his skills against top-tier talent, further solidifying his reputation as one of the premier FCS tackles in this draft class.

During the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine, Vinson continued to impress. He recorded an official 40-yard dash time of 5.12 seconds, demonstrating notable speed for a player of his size.

Analysts have praised his thick, rugged build, good length, and heavy hands, all of which contribute to his physical, aggressive playing style.

Despite his achievements, Vinson’s draft projections vary. Some sources rank him as the 37th offensive lineman, projecting him as a sixth-round pick.

However, his performances at both the Senior Bowl and the Combine have likely improved his stock, making the Alabama A&M alum a potential mid-round selection.

Vinson’s participation in these high-profile events underscores his readiness to transition to the professional level. As the lone current HBCU player at the Combine, he carries the aspirations of many, aiming to pave the way for future prospects from similar backgrounds.

Carson Vinson’s blend of physical attributes, competitive performances, and resilience positions him as an intriguing prospect in the 2025 NFL Draft. Teams seeking a physically imposing and aggressive offensive tackle may find Vinson to be a valuable addition to their roster. Vinson is aiming to become the first HBCU player to be selected in the NFL Draft since former Jackson State defensive back Isaiah Bolden was taken by the New England Patriots in 2023.

Thirty years after his stint as an NFL prospect out of Alabama football, Sam Shade is having a full-circle moment at the HBCU Legacy Bowl.

The newly minted head coach of Alabama A&M University is one of the coaches at the showcase event for HBCU talent — and he’s not taking it lightly.

“It’s special I’m truly honored and humbled to be here amongst some of the greatest of the game — not just HBCU but NFL guys like Shack Harris and Doug Williams — that’s an honor,” Shade told New Orleans Saints Media.

Shade has yet to coach a game at Alabama A&M — he was hired in December — but he earned his spot into coaching at the fourth iteration of the game at Miles College. In three seasons he took the Fairfield, AL-based HBCU from a one-win rebuild job to an SIAC champion and won the program’s first-ever Division II playoff game.

Sam Shade, Miles College, NFL

As one of the coaches of Team Robinson — named after Grambling State legend Eddie Robinson — Shade will get a chance to coach Miles offensive lineman Christian Twymon one last time. But he won’t be the only player that Shade has coached in New Orleans this week.

“A big part of this week is also the career fair that the HBCU Legacy Bowl puts on. That’s a great event,” Shade said. “We’ve got a couple players here from Miles College — where I coached before — that are looking forward to it. They’ve got their resumes right, they’ve got their gear ready for it to maybe land a job outside of football.”

Shade will be working with Jackson State head coach T.C. Taylor who is coming off an 11-2 season in his second year, guiding Jackson State football to the Celebration Bowl.

“I was very happy for him that they were able to win it in the SWAC conference that I’m in now. I’m excited to be in it, but it does present a huge challenge on that SWAC East side of things,” Shade said with a smile. “I’m going to enjoy this week with T.C. and hey, at some point during the season, we’ll get the chance to compete against each other. But he’s done a tremendous job and got a really good football team and it’s an honor for me to be a part of the conference.”

Alabama A&M offensive tackle Carson Vinson was the lone NFL Draft prospect from an HBCU at the Reese’s Senior Bowl practice on Tuesday and he left a big impression going up against SEC talent.

Vinson stands tall on his own — he’s 6’6, 317 pounds. But his play still took some by surprise.

“I think it went great — I think I played to my standard. A lot of outside people would say I had a great, amazing day. I just had a Carson Vinson Day for me,” Vinson told The Draft Network. “That’s just what I do, that’s what my standard is. I think I competed well and did what I needed to do. I just gotta do the same for the next couple of days. “

Vinson was a dominant force on the offensive line for Alabama A&M. That counts for something, but his performance against players from SEC schools like LSU and Texas A&M. Vinson is aware that this is how he will be measured when it comes to the NFL Draft.

Carson Vinson, NFL Draft, HBCU, SEC, NFL

“It was very important because as a small-school guy, that’s the biggest question is competition-wise. I just wanted to show that HBCUs we’ve got dawgs at HBCUs. We got dawgs at FCS and we compete, we play. I’m not a charity case — I’m here to play football.”

Vinson also got a chance to go up against future NFL talent over the last few years as his HBCU took on Auburn and Vanderbilt in the 2024 and 2023 season openers.

The self-described football “addict” will spend the rest of the week practicing against top level talent in preparation for the Reese’s Senior Bowl at the end of the week.

Deion Sanders made a splash when he made a surprise appearance at his daughter’s HBCU basketball game on Saturday. Afterward he spoke briefly in the Alabama A&M locker room after the Lady Bulldogs victory over Alabama State.

“Congratulations ladies y y’all did the dog gone thing, Y’all came out tripping a little bit but slowly and surely y’all got it together. Coach had to get in your buts, some of y’all, but you pulled it out,” Sanders said to the team.

Then he pointed out the play of Alabama A&M forward Alisha Wilson, one of the top rebounders in HBCU women’s basketball. She is second in the SWAC averaging 9.9 boards per game.

“You ain’t no joke. You are a dog, I love you,” Sanders said pointing at Wilson.

The two shared a quick hug as her teammates cheered and smiled. Deion Sanders continued on with his address to the team.

“Coach you did the dog gone thing. I like the adjustments you made late, you went to the two bigs at the end, I like that. I’m proud of y’all. I wanted y’all to win because I wanted my baby girl to be happy. She was already mad because I told her I wasn’t coming, she told me she cried today, but she knows I’ll never let her down,” Sanders said.

Alabama A&M is 11-6 overall, with a 4-1 record in SWAC play.

Wilson leads the team in rebounding and blocks and is the third leading scorer, averaging 10.1 points per game.

During the game versus Alabama State, Wilson surpassed career records of 1,000 rebounds, 1,000 points and 100+ blocks.

Deion Sanders made a surprise appearance on Saturday afternoon to take in some HBCU basketball and see his daughter. Shelomi Sanders, the youngest child of the former Jackson State coach, plays for Dawn Thornton on the Alabama A&M women’s basketball team.

“Surprised my Babygirl @shelomisanders yesterday at Alabama A&M! It was epic and they won. The HBCU atmosphere was all that. Dr. Bryant thank u helping me make yesterday happen for my baby! Love all y’all that showed me love. God bless,” Sanders wrote on Instagram.

Shelomi is in her first season with Alabama A&M after transferring from Colorado last season where she was on campus with her father. Sanders began her career at Jackson State before leaving for Colorado when Deion Sanders accepted the job there.

Alabama A&M was at home against arch-rival Alabama State, the Lady Bulldogs won 54-47. Sanders logged seven minutes in the game, missing all three of her field goal attempts but she managed a steal and one assist. Sanders has scored 26 points in 17 games played this season.

The father and daughter hugged along the sideline after the game with Shelomi seeming to shed a tear as the two laughed and talked.

Deion Sanders has an interesting history with both of the Alabama based HBCU programs. Jackson State famously left a pink scooter at midfield after defeating AAMU back in October 2021. The gag gift was a result of a back and forth between Sanders and then coach Connell Maynor leading up to the game. Sanders was also involved in the infamous “bro hug shove” from Alabama State coach Eddie Robinson Jr. during his time at Jackson State after a win in Montgomery. But those rivalries have long since passed and Saturday’s appearance was well received as a tender moment between Deion and Shelomi Sanders.

Sam Shade, a former Alabama football standout and seasoned coach, has taken the reins as Alabama A&M University’s 22nd head football coach. With deep ties to Alabama football and a strong commitment to HBCU athletics, Shade’s vision is rooted in developing a championship-caliber program on and off the field while fostering growth in every facet of his players’ lives.

“Da Chase is on,” Shade declared, emphasizing his program’s philosophy, “Da Chase.” It stands for discipline, accountability, character, habits, attitude, sacrifice, and excellence. These core values will shape every aspect of Alabama A&M football, from the classroom to the gridiron.

Commitment to Excellence in Alabama and beyond

Shade’s journey in Alabama football, from winning a national championship with the Crimson Tide in 1992 to coaching at various levels, positions him uniquely to lead the Bulldogs. He is no stranger to the state’s competitive football culture, having recruited extensively across Alabama during his time at Miles College, where 71% of his roster hailed from the state.

“We will start locally,” he said of recruiting efforts, focusing on building relationships with high schools in Alabama and extending outreach to neighboring states. Shade stressed the importance of identifying and nurturing homegrown talent, ensuring that the Bulldogs’ roster reflects the rich football heritage of the region.

A Championship Mindset

“Ultimately, my vision is to develop a championship football program on and off the field,” Shade stated. He outlined ambitious goals: winning the annual game at Birmingham’s Legion Field, securing the SWAC East title, hosting the SWAC Championship Game at Louis Crews Stadium, and capturing the Celebration Bowl title to become HBCU national champions.

Shade’s championship aspirations are underpinned by his belief in relentless improvement. “Even after we win a championship, we’ll continue to work on improving and making it better,” he promised. His philosophy extends beyond football, aiming to increase university enrollment and enhance campus and community life through the program’s success.

“Da Chase” Philosophy

The foundation of Shade’s vision is “Da Chase,” a framework that instills core values in his players. He emphasized discipline as the cornerstone, beginning with simple practices like punctuality. Accountability and trust are equally important, creating a cohesive team culture where everyone’s contributions matter.

“Football is the biggest athletic program on a college campus,” Shade noted. “Everybody’s important—from trainers to equipment staff. When we win, everybody gets a ring.”

The other pillars of “Da Chase”—character, habits, attitude, sacrifice, and excellence—reflect Shade’s dedication to holistic development. He highlighted the importance of shaping players into well-rounded individuals who succeed both on the field and in life.

A Bright Future for Alabama A&M Football

Shade’s history in Alabama football and commitment to the HBCU community resonate in his plans to elevate AAMU. He called on alumni, boosters, and fans to rally behind the program, urging them to show their support by attending games and embracing the vision.

With Sam Shade at the helm, Alabama A&M football is poised to chase greatness—not just in championships, but in creating a legacy of excellence that uplifts the entire university community.

Sam Shade, a former Alabama football standout and national champion, has been named the new head football coach at Alabama A&M University. The announcement, made by Director of Athletics Dr. Paul Bryant on the From the Hill Podcast, positions Shade to lead the Bulldogs in their quest to return to prominence within the FCS and the HBCU football landscape.

Shade, who played a pivotal role in Alabama football’s success during his collegiate career, brings a wealth of experience as both a player and coach. A native of Birmingham, Alabama, Shade helped the Crimson Tide capture the 1992 national championship before embarking on an eight-year NFL career with the Cincinnati Bengals and Washington Redskins.

“People love people who have played and went to Alabama,” Dr. Bryant said. “He’s going to have another fanbase that is going to be able to support some of the efforts that we need to have supported at Alabama A&M.

Since transitioning from playing to coaching, Shade has built an impressive resume. He served on the staffs of Samford University, Georgia State University, and the Cleveland Browns. At Pinson Valley High School, he guided the program to a state championship, showcasing his ability to build winning teams. Most recently, Shade transformed Miles College’s football program, taking a 1-9 team in 2022 to a 10-3 record and a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) title in 2024. Under his leadership, the Golden Bears also advanced to the NCAA Division II playoffs.

Alabama A&M, Sam Shade

Shade’s ties to Alabama football and the state itself played a key role in Alabama A&M’s decision. Dr. Bryant highlighted Shade’s ability to recruit top talent throughout the region. “Sam has deep connections across Alabama and a proven track record of identifying and developing players. His background with Alabama football and his work at Miles College show he understands what it takes to build a championship program.”

In addition to his football expertise, Shade’s experience at HBCUs was a critical factor in his hiring.

For Sam Shade, taking over the Alabama A&M program represents an opportunity to make his mark in the FCS. With the Bulldogs looking to return to their winning ways, Shade’s leadership and Alabama football pedigree bring a renewed sense of optimism to the program.

“The resources, the hold in the state of Alabama is what sold us as well,” Bryant continued. “He has vast resources in the state of Alabama, where he recruits all across the state. And he has connections everywhere. And then not only in the state, but all across the country.”

Alabama A&M fans and alumni are eager to see what the future holds under the leadership of the former Alabama football star, as Shade prepares to bring his championship mentality to Huntsville.

A week after former two former NFL stars were hired as HBCU coaches, Ed Reed may be next.

The Pro Football Hall of Famer is reportedly one of the finalists for the head coach opening at Alabama A&M, according to Football Scoop. The SWAC school is looking to replace Connell Maynor, who was fired after seven years at the helm late last month.

If he is named the new head coach at the HBCU, it would be a job more than two years in the making. He was chosen as Bethune-Cookman’s head football coach in late 2022 but never coached a game. His offer was eventually rescinded following several profanity-laced social media posts where he berated conditions in the aftermath of a major hurricane that caused damaged to the Daytona, FL school.

Ed Reed, HBCU
Ed Reed’s short stint at Bethune-Cookman hasn’t kept him from talking to HBCUs about football jobs.

“I was to be the coach – I was never the coach,” Reed told former Miami teammate Edgerrin James earlier this year on the “Create The Life Podcast.” “I never signed a contract. I never got fired like everybody said.”

Since then, Reed’s name has popped up in multiple HBCU football searches, but he has yet to officially be named and introduced as a head coach. Alabama A&M and Mississippi Valley are the only two remaining HBCU Division I football jobs opening after NFL stars were hired in the past week. Michael Vick was hired by Norfolk State University and DeSean Jackson was named head coach at Delaware State University.

Connell Maynor’s time at Alabama A&M is done.

The school announced on Monday that it has “relieved” Connell Maynor of his head coaching role after seven seasons at the helm.

“We want to thank Connell Maynor for his seven seasons at Alabama A&M University,” AAMU AD Dr. Paul Bryant said “We wish him well in all his future endeavors.”

Mayor went 40-32 during his tenure at Alabama A&M. He led the team to one SWAC title during the abbreviated spring season in 2021.

He had four winning seasons in a row to start his career, including the abbreviated spring season. However, the program has gone 15-19 since 2022, including a 6-6 record during the 2024 season.

Maynor arrived in Huntsville in 2018 following a four-year stint at Hampton University.

In 2014, Maynor was hired as the head coach at Hampton University, where he guided the Pirates in their final years in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) before the program transitioned to the Big South Conference. During his time at Hampton (2014–2017), Maynor led the team to a competitive record and helped develop talent while navigating the challenges of conference realignment.

Maynor’s head coaching career started off in a big way at Winston-Salem State University. He led the program to a 45-6 record during his time at WSSU, winning back-to-back CIAA titles in 2011 and 2012, going undefeated in both regular seasons — and culminating in a 2012 national championship game appearance.

A national search for the program’s next head coach will begin immediately, according to Alabama A&M’s release.

The Alabama A&M University Bulldogs traveled to Tallahassee to face the Florida A&M Rattlers (FAMU) in a makeup game that was delayed from the original date of Sept. 28 because of category 4 hurricane Helene that hit just east of Tallahassee, FL on Sept. 26. Heavy on the hearts of the players, coaches, and fans was the recent passing of HBCU football player Medrick Burnett, Jr.

Burnett passed on Wednesday from injuries sustained in the Magic City Classic on Oct. 26 in Birmingham. He was pronounced dead by the Jefferson County Deputy Coroner on Wednesday evening at UAB Hospital.

At just 20 years old, it was an even tougher loss for such a young and talented student-athlete.

The Bulldogs rolled into Tallahassee, obviously distracted from the events of the two days leading up to Friday’s game. Nowhere was it more evident than head coach Connell Maynor.

“I am just glad these young men were able to play today. The last 48 hours have been extremely difficult. Hearing the news that Medrick had passed, then hearing that he hadn’t and then finally getting the final news that he had passed was really tough. I applaud our team for even wanting to play this game at this time,” Maynor said.

HBCU Medrick Burnett FAMU Alabama A&M

The HBCU community showered an outpouring of love on Alabama A&M. During the fourth quarter, the FAMU announcer called for a moment of silence to salute Medrick Burnett, Jr. You could hear a pin drop at Bragg Stadium as the fans paid homage.

The game drew over 10,000 fans for an after-Thanksgiving game that could have been even more sparse. With temperatures in the low 50s, drizzles of rain throughout the game, and the biggest shopping day of the year, it was an impressive crowd under the circumstance that most students had returned to their homes to celebrate the holidays with their families.

FAMU would pull off a 28-20 victory in the final game of the season, ending with a 7-6 (5-3 SWAC) record. AAMU would finish the season at 6-6 (4-4 SWAC).

Alabama A&M initially announced Burnett’s death on Wednesday morning before issuing a retraction later in the day. The statement placed the source of the erroneous report as “an immediate family member.”

The Jefferson County coroner announced the news of Burnett’s death in a statement on Friday. The coroner listed his official time of death as Wednesday evening.

Burnett was a redshirt freshman from Lakewood, California, who joined Alabama A&M after beginning his college career at Grambling State.

This season, Medrick Burnett appeared in seven games, recording a season-best three tackles at Austin Peay. AAMU is scheduled to conclude its season against Florida A&M University on Nov. 29 in Tallahassee.

Hours after Alabama A&M reported the death of one of its players, the HBCU has had to retract the statement as he remains hospitalized.

Contrary to a previous announcement by Alabama A&M University, student-athlete Medrick Burnett Jr. has not passed away and remains hospitalized in Birmingham, according to Burnett Jr.’s family.

“When the time comes, we will issue a statement about what we have been through,” Burnett Jr.’s mother, Denise Burnett, told WSFA.

Burnett, a linebacker for Alabama A&M’s HBCU football team, sustained a serious head injury during the Magic City Classic Game against rival Alabama State University on Oct. 26. He was taken off the field on a stretcher and reportedly gave a thumbs-up as he was wheeled away, offering a glimmer of hope to teammates and fans.

Alabama A&M offensive lineman Carson Vinson made history this morning as the first HBCU player invited to the 2025 Reese’s Senior Bowl, widely regarded as the preeminent college football all-star game and the first stage in the NFL Draft process. The announcement came after an intense 5:30 a.m. practice, marking a monumental moment for the Bulldogs’ program.

Vinson, a 6’6”, 305-pound senior from Morrisville, N.C., has been a dominant force on Alabama A&M’s offensive line. A graduate of Panther Creek High School, his development under Alabama A&M head coach Connell Maynor has made him one of the top HBCU prospects in the nation.

Adding to the significance of the occasion, Pro Football Hall of Famer John Stallworth, an Alabama A&M legend and 1974 Senior Bowl alum, was on hand to deliver the invitation. The emotional presentation highlighted the importance of HBCU representation in premier events like the Senior Bowl, which has become a vital stage for NFL Draft prospects.

The Senior Bowl, held annually in Mobile, Alabama, is a critical showcase for top college talent. For Vinson, this invitation affirms his hard work and reflects the growing recognition of HBCU football players on the national stage.

Shelomi Sanders made a statement in her Alabama A&M debut, scoring a college career-high to help lead the HBCU squad to a 96-50 win over Oakwood

Sanders, the daughter of Pro Football Hall of Famer and Colorado head coach Deion Sanders, has returned to the HBCU ranks after spending a season at Colorado. She initially started her college career at Jackson State, where her presence generated excitement across HBCU sports due to her high-profile lineage. Her decision to join Alabama A&M signals a new era for the Bulldogs, now led by recently appointed head coach Dawn Thornton.

Thornton, determined to elevate AAMU’s competitiveness in the SWAC, brought Sanders after moving from Arkansas Pine Bluff. Sanders made an immediate impact in her debut, scoring 14 points while also contributing one rebound and an assist. Her ability to drive to the basket and accuracy at the free-throw line helped the Bulldogs maintain their lead, establishing Sanders as a key offensive and defensive player for Alabama A&M.

Sanders’ return to the HBCU ranks is a significant win for Alabama A&M and the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). Her commitment to HBCU basketball aligns with a growing trend of high-profile athletes choosing HBCU programs, bringing renewed attention and talent to the league.

For Thornton and the Bulldogs, Sanders’ standout debut reflects the positive momentum building within HBCU sports, as more athletes recognize the unique opportunities and legacy of competing in HBCU programs. AAMU seems poised to make waves this season, with Shelomi Sanders contributing to the charge.

HBCU Alabama A&M University received $2,498,274.00 in donations during last week’s Homecoming festivities – setting a new record for the second consecutive year and outpacing last year’s total by over $1.1 million. The record-setting week of support sets the stage for a year-long celebration on The Hill

In 2025, the University will celebrate 150 years. The sesquicentennial celebration is rooted in an overarching campaign to raise $150 million from private and public sources to support campus improvements, STEM capacity, and scholarships at Alabama’s largest Historically Black College or University (HBCU).

“At a moment when our campus is growing, enrollment is surging, and research and programs are reaching new heights – the world is seeking the kind of diverse, driven, talented leaders who have always defined A&M,” said President Daniel K. Wims. “It’s our time to celebrate our rich heritage and re-image a bold future for Alabama A&M.”

During Homecoming week, the University invited early support of the #AAMU150 sesquicentennial campaign. In total, the University has already garnered nearly $15 million in various sources of support toward the $150 million December 2025 goal.

“This next chapter is ours to write. Together, we will light the way forward and spark new possibilities by energizing a growing, destination campus; equipping researchers, faculty, and professionals of the future with the latest in STEM tools and technologies; and empowering scholars ready to lead and serve on a new scale,” said Wims.

2024 Homecoming gifts from AAMU class reunions totaled more than $1.5 million. Other major donors included the initiates of the Delta Delta Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.; Alabama Power; The Home Depot; the Sigma Beta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.; Regions Bank, and Prince Hall Masons.

Alumni, supporters, and friends of the University are invited to become early #AAMU150 donors at www.aamu.edu/give as donations to all initiatives will be counted toward the campaign.

One of the largest and most historic HBCU football Classics will be getting some national exposure this season as the 83rd Magic City Classic between Alabama A&M and Alabama State will be a nationally televised game broadcast live on ESPN U on Saturday, Oct. 26 from Legion Field in Birmingham, Alabama.

Initially listed as “TBD” on the SWAC football ESPN schedule when it was released back in June, the conference released a statement on Oct. 14 announcing that the game will now air on ESPN U, making it a national TV game on one of ESPN’s broadcast networks, as opposed to airing on its streaming ESPN+ platform.

Regarded as the largest HBCU classic in the country, the Magic City Classic is played at Legion Field, which has a seating capacity of 71,000. The 2023 matchup had a recorded attendance of 69,210 and that’s not including the thousands of tailgaters that pack the lots outside of Legion Field all week long. With both teams still very much in the race to represent the East in the SWAC Championship Game it’s easy to see why this game has been elevated to an ESPN national broadcast position.

Alabama A&M will come into the 83rd Magic City Classic with a 3-3 overall record and a 1-1 record in the SWAC. Alabama State also enters at 3-3 overall but with a 2-1 conference record.

Alabama A&M renegotiated its contract in 2023 and came to an agreement with Alabama State and the City of Birmingham to keep the Magic City Classic at Legion Field for the next four years.

“These two deserving HBCUs will receive the highest guaranteed payout in the history of HBCU athletics,” said Perren King, Executive Director of the event, in a statement. “This guarantee is higher than some FBS bowl game payouts.?We would like to applaud both presidents for being extremely thoughtful in achieving the best outcome for their constituency.”

Another marquee HBCU football matchup, Jackson State vs Florida A&M, was also moved to an ESPNU national broadcast for Oct. 19th. Both HBCU football matchups will have major implications on the SWAC championship and Celebration Bowl races and will play out in back-to-back weeks on national television.

Auburn football head coach Hugh Freeze met up with Alabama A&M head coach Connell Maynor for a brief chat with the HBCU coach.

The SEC squad would go on to dominate the SWAC squad with a resounding 73-3 win on Saturday. There weren’t many highlights for Alabama A&M, but Maynor’s pre-game chat with his opponent was a bright spot in the loss.

Maynor was asked about the chat on the weekly SWAC football coaches media call and he expounded a little on the conversation. According to Maynor, he congratulated Hugh Freeze for getting the job, his recruiting and the two remarked about the changes in college football.

“He told me good luck, I told him good luck — which he didn’t need the luck — I needed it,” Maynor said.

Maynor made it a point to say that he wished more coaches in the SWAC would take the time out to chat prior to games.

“I think we should do that. That’s part of the game,” Maynor continued. “Head coaches should go out and chop it up. If Nick Saban and Dabo (Swinney) for five, ten minutes — but we get in our games — some of our games the (opposing) head coach doesn’t come. I don’t talk to all of our head coaches now days.”

Maynor is now the longest-tenured coach in the SWAC, having been at Alabama A&M since 2018. Some programs have had as many as three head coaches in that span.

“We got some guys that won’t talk to me before the game. I don’t know what’s wrong with these guys. I mean, just come and shake hands man. That’s what you’re supposed to do. We didn’t do it all the time. It’s okay with me if they don’t.”

“It’s something that you should do. It’s the right thing to do.”

Alabama A&M will take on Kentucky State, a Division II HBCU, on Saturday.

This Saturday, Alabama A&M faces a significant challenge as they travel to Auburn to take on an SEC powerhouse in what promises to be a tough but educational game for his HBCU program. For Alabama A&M head coach Connell Maynor, the focus is on preparation, competition, and staying healthy as they look to test their mettle against an iconic program.

“You know, a lot of hard work and still got a lot more work to do this week to get ready to go down to Auburn and play an SEC program,” Maynor stated. “We know it’s going to be tough–you’re playing up in a money game. We’re excited about it, we want to be competitive as long as we can. At the end of the day, we want to get out of there healthy, not losing any of our players, so that we can compete during the season.”

Maynor’s candid approach underscores the reality of facing a higher-level opponent like Auburn. The game, while difficult, will be a valuable measuring stick for Alabama A&M as they gauge their progress early in the season. The key for the Bulldogs is to remain competitive for as long as possible and to learn about themselves in the process.

“We want to be competitive as long as we can. As long as the game is competitive, we’re going to keep playing our guys, and that means we have a chance to win the football game,” Maynor explained. “If it starts to get out of hand, then we’ll start to make some subs, get those guys out of there, and give everybody else a chance to play.”

Alabama A&M head coach Connell Maynor, HBCU

One of the major storylines for Alabama A&M is their new-look defense, led by new defensive coordinator Thomas Howard who comes over from South Carolina State. The Bulldogs have spent time adjusting to the new scheme and incorporating a mix of returning players, freshmen, and transfers. Maynor is eager to see how this revamped unit holds up against Auburn’s potent offense.

“We got a new defensive coordinator and we got a new defense. I was really keen on watching those guys and seeing how they developed,” Maynor said. “They seemed to pick up the defense very well in the spring, but we added some players, some freshmen and transfers that came in during camp. So those guys had to get adjusted to the new defense.”

Offensively, Alabama A&M will lean on their offensive line, a unit that returns the most experience on the team. Their running game, led by standout Donovan Eaglin, also figures to be a key component in the Bulldogs’ approach. However, the quarterback position remains an area of uncertainty as Maynor evaluates multiple options.

Connell Maynor talks about his offensive line via the HBCU Gameday Instagram channel.

“Offensive line is what we have to lean on this year. We have the most returning starters there,” Maynor noted. “Receivers will be fine, and running backs–of course, we got Donovan Eaglin. We’ve got a good running back room, and tight ends are solid. The quarterback position, of course, is always a question mark. We’ve got a couple of guys that we think are going to play this week–Cornelious Brown, Aveon Smith, and Xavier Lankford will still be in the mix also.”

For Alabama A&M, this game offers a chance to see how they stack up physically against a much larger Auburn team. Lessons that can be invaluable during the HBCU portion of its schedule. Maynor is eager in particular to assess how his offensive line’s size and conditioning match up against the SEC-level competition.

“We have the size now, we just have to see if we’ve got the stamina and depth. It’ll be interesting because we are pretty big up front, and I want to see how we hold up against those guys.”

While the odds may be stacked against Alabama A&M, an in state HBCU program trying to dethrone a SEC program on the road. The experience gained from facing Auburn will be invaluable as they head into the rest of their season. For Maynor and his team, this game is not just about competing but also about learning and growing as a unit.

SEC member Arkansas football will likely kick off its season against an HBCU from the SWAC for the second year in a row next fall.

Arkansas football has agreed to host Alabama A&M on August 30, 2025. The game is set to replace the one Arkansas had previously agreed to with Missouri State on that date. The story was initially reported by WholeHogSports.com.

The SEC squad will open its season this fall against in-state HBCU Arkansas Pine-Bluff on Aug. 29. The Thursday night game at War Memorial Stadium is set to kick off at 6:30.

Coincidently, Alabama A&M is set to open its 2024 season with an SEC squad. AAMU is set to take on Auburn on Aug. 31. It started last season against another SEC program, taking on Vanderbilt in a 47-13 game loss.

Alabama A&M University has faced several FBS opponents throughout its football history but has yet to secure a victory against any of these higher-division teams. The Bulldogs have often been overmatched in these games, facing the challenges of competing against programs with larger budgets, more extensive recruiting pipelines, and greater depth. Despite the lack of wins, these matchups provide the team with valuable experience and exposure, which can be beneficial during their regular season in the SWAC. Its record against FBS teams stands at 0-15 as of 2024, reflecting the significant challenges faced by FCS programs when competing against FBS opponents.

Shelomi Sanders, daughter of Deion Sanders, is preparing to restart her college basketball career once again at a different SWAC HBCU.

The former Jackson State guard recently opened up about her move to Alabama A&M after spending last season at Colorado.

She spoke with TS4T about the decision to leave Colorado after one year, with help from her mother, Pilar Sanders.

“I don’t want to say anything too bad,” Sanders said on a livestream. “It just wasn’t good energy. It wasn’t good vibes. There wasn’t enough being poured into me as a player and young lady. If I didn’t leave when I did, I promise you I would’ve quit.”

Deion Sanders, Shelomi Sanders, Alabama A&M HBCU
Shelomi Sanders spent one season at Colorado, after her father, Deion Sanders, was hired as its head football coach.

Her decision to join the JSU women’s basketball team aligned with her father’s role as the head football coach there. During her time at Jackson State, Shelomi appeared in two games but had limited playing time, averaging just one point per game.

Following Deion Sanders’ departure from Jackson State to coach at the University of Colorado, Shelomi transferred to Colorado as well. However, her stint there was also brief and marked by limited opportunities on the court. She played in only five games, logging a total of 11 minutes, and recorded minimal stats.

Shelomi entered the transfer portal again following her lone season at Colorado, seeking more playing time and a fresh start. She returned to the HBCU circuit, committing to Alabama A&M University under the guidance of new head coach Dawn Thornton.

The post Alabama A&M would prefer not playing two quarterbacks appeared first on HBCU Gameday.

]]>
Alabama A&M head football coach Connell Maynor recently shed light on his quarterback strategy for the upcoming season at the 2024 SWAC Media Day. Maynor is emphasizing a strong preference for a single starting quarterback over a two-quarterback system. His comments come on the heels of a season where he split time between Xavier Lankford and Quincy Casey. Lankford will be returning this season but Casey has since transferred to West Georgia, Maynor is clear about his ideal approach.

“Of course I can play one quarterback. I would love to play one quarterback,” he said with a grin. He elaborated on the conditions that would dictate this ideal scenario.

“Well, you know, if you go out and execute, you’re throwing touchdowns, you get the first downs. You’re moving the chains. You’re making the right reads. There’s no reason we need to replace you, you know, unless it’s a blowout situation and we get the other guy in the game.”

Maynor’s preference is driven by his belief that a two-quarterback system can create division within the team.

Alabama A&M quarterback Xavier Lankford
Alabama A&M quarterback Xavier Lankford

“I don’t like to do two quarterbacks because that means you’re not satisfied or happy with one. In my opinion, it’s like, I think I said this last year, if you are a one and you are a one. Some receivers, he is going to like you more. Some of the offensive line is going to like [this guy], other members of the offensive line will like the other guy, some of the defensive players are going to like you, some defensive players will like the other guy. So if you play two quarterbacks, in my opinion, you’re splitting your team up.”

He underscored the potential for discord, stating, “Anytime this guy mess up, this guy over here [will say], I told you ‘whatcha-call’ should be in there. I don’t like him. And then when this guy mess up, it’s the same thing. So you kind of, in my opinion, I think you split the team when you do that because everybody will have their favorite who they want in there. Therefore you kind of split your team. So I would love to just play one quarterback. I want to just play one quarterback.”

Reflecting on the previous season, Lankford and Casey both had moments of brilliance but also struggled with consistency. According to Alabama A&M’s 2023 offensive stats, Lankford completed 90 of 166 passes (54.2%) for 1,031 yards, with 9 touchdowns and 6 interceptions. Casey, on the other hand, completed 115 of 195 passes (58.97%) for 1490 yards, with 11 touchdowns and 6 interceptions.

Maynor concluded, “The only reason I play two quarterbacks is because I have to when one is not playing well enough.”

This season, with Xavier Lankford as the likely frontrunner for Alabama A&M, Connell Maynor hopes to establish a single leader under center, fostering unity and consistency within the team.

GloRilla, Boosie and King George will all be at one HBCU homecoming this fall.

Alabama A&M University, an HBCU located in the Huntsville, AL area, has begun to announce several of the events for its 2024 homecoming.

GloRilla hails from Memphis, Tennessee. Her rise to fame can be attributed to her distinctive voice and dynamic flow, which set her apart in the industry. Some of her more popular songs include “F.N.F. (Let’s Go),” which became a viral hit and anthem for empowerment and independence. Another notable track is “Blessed,” where she showcases her lyrical prowess and confident persona, as well as her new anthem “T.G.I.F.” GloRilla’s music often resonates with themes of resilience, self-empowerment, and street-smart narratives, reflecting her experiences and the culture of her hometown. Her growing discography and engaging presence have solidified her as a prominent figure in modern rap. She performed at rival Alabama State last fall.

GloRilla popped out at Alabama State University last fall.

Initially performing under the name Lil Boosie, he gained widespread recognition with hits like “Zoom,” “Wipe Me Down,” and “Set It Off” in the mid-2000s. His music is characterized by its emotional honesty and vivid storytelling, addressing themes such as struggle, perseverance, and survival. His songs can be heard at almost any HBCU athletic event.

Boosie stops by HBCU Southern University
Boosie poses with members of the Southern University basketball team.

And then there is King George. You may or may not know his name but you likely have heard his music. His popular tracks like “Keep On Rollin'” and “Too Long” showcase his talent for crafting memorable melodies and poignant lyrics that capture the nuances of human relationships. With a style reminiscent of old-school soul legends but infused with modern sensibilities, King George has carved out a niche for himself in the music industry.

And for the gospel crowd, Grammy Award winning vocalist Leandria Johnson, 19-time Stellar Award & Dove Award winning artist Pastor Mike Jr., will also be at Alabama A&M homecoming this fall. The event runs from Oct. 5-12.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. | Alabama A&M University head men’s basketball coach Otis Hughley Jr. added another major milestone on Wednesday as the HBCU basketball coach was selected as the Senegal Women’s National Team head coach.

“This is an outstanding honor and I am absolutely excited to be selected to take over as the women’s national team head coach,” Hughley said. “This position will not interfere with the duties I have at Alabama A&M University. In fact, this will be helpful as we expand our brand globally.”

Hughley became the 10th head coach at Alabama A&M in 2022 and has guided the Bulldogs to the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Men’s Basketball Tournament in back-to-back seasons while compiling a 27-41 overall record and a 19-17 conference mark.

During the 2023-24 campaign, Hughley coached Chad Moodie, who received the SWAC Freshman of the Year honor, and guided his HBCU to the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Men’s Basketball Tournament. While at the CIT, Alabama A&M defeated Austin Peay in the quarterfinals, giving the Bulldogs its first postseason tournament win in 19 years. AAMU advanced to the semifinals, falling to eventual tourney champs, fellow HBCU Norfolk State.

Hughley, who has worked with the Sacramento Kings and Golden State Warriors as an assistant coach, is no stranger to the international stage on both the men’s and women’s side, having served more than a decade with the NBA’s China Program.

As part of that initiative, he was the associate head coach for the Shandong Bulls Goldstone in 2002-03 and helped lead that franchise to a 31-11 record and a first-round playoff appearance that season.

HBCU Alabama A&M University basketball Women's National Team

He returned to the international game 12 years later as a consultant to the Xinjiang Flying Tigers and as the head coach of the Chinese Taipei Men’s and Women’s National Teams in 2015-16. That same season he would serve as an assistant coach for the Tianjin Gold Lions in the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA).

In 2017 his international experience would continue to grow to include the women’s game as he was named the head coach of the Nigerian Women’s National Team. In that role, he helped lead the program to three Afro-Basket Championships (2017, 2019, 2021), a No. 1 world ranking in Africa, No. 14 in the world, and a berth in the 2022 World Cup. The latter made them one of the top 12 teams in the world.

Part of what helped them earn those August rankings was an impressive performance in the 2018 World Cup in Spain when they became the first African team to win a game outside of the continent when they won three in a row to reach the quarterfinals.

They defeated No. 7 Turkey, No. 16 Argentina, and No. 20 Greece in that tournament and earned a berth in the 2020 Toyko Olympics where they finished 11th. They are currently one of 12 teams to have qualified for the 2022 World Cup in Sydney, Australia.

Alabama A&M men’s basketball continues to add international flavor to its roster and this time in a big way. Bol Kuir, a 7 foot 3 inch center from South Sudan, announced Tuesday on social media that he’s committed to the Bulldogs. He will have three years of eligibility remaining.

Kuir played last season for Garden City Community College in Kansas. In eleven games he averaged 1.6 points per game and 2.1 rebounds. Coming out of high school in Kentucky in 2022, Kuir originally committed to New Mexico State. He chose the Aggies over his top five schools of Providence, West Virginia, UNLV, Texas Tech and DePaul.

In 2021 Kuir led Belfry High School with 13.8 points per game and a state-leading 13.4 rebounds per game.

The 7 footer never enrolled at New Mexico State and ended up at The University of San Diego where he did not play in any games. In April of 2023 Kuir announced that he was entering the NBA Draft before later withdrawing.

Alabama A&M could be a stable home for Kuir

The journey for Bol Kuir now includes what could be a stop and potentially an extended stay at Alabama A&M.

Alabama A&M reached the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) semifinals for the second straight year this past season. The Bulldogs knocked off the second seed in the tournament, Alcorn State, before falling in the semifinals to third seed Texas Southern.

AAMU head coach Otis Hughley is no stranger to coaching international players. He spent more than a decade coaching in China with the NBA’s China Program. From 2017-2022 he coached the Nigerian Women’s National Team, guiding the 2022 team to the World Cup and a top 12 ranking in the world.

Otis Hughley understands international basketball

Hughley has had tremendous success on the international stage with both men and women, having served more than a decade with the National Basketball Association’s (NBA) China Program.

As part of that initiative he was the associate head coach for the Shandong Bulls Goldstone in 2002-03 and helped lead that franchise to a 31-11 record and a first round playoff appearance that season.

He would return to the international game 12 years later as a consultant to the Xinjiang Flying Tigers and as the head coach of the Chinese Taipei Men’s and Women’s National Teams in 2015-16. The latter made them one of the top 12 teams in the world.

The 2024-25 Alabama A&M roster includes five players that list their hometown as cities outside of the United States.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. | Dawn Thornton, Alabama A&M University head women’s basketball coach solidified her staff on Thursday by welcoming HBCU coaching veterans Tim Valentine as the Associate Head Coach and Briona Brown as an Assistant Coach and Director of Recruiting.

Valentine, who brings more than 20 years of experience to Alabama A&M, spent the previous seasons as the assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Northeastern University.

“I think Tim Valentine is an unbelievable addition for our staff! He has had unparalleled success at every place he’s been a part of,” Thornton said. “No stranger to the HBCU family, Valentine helped lead Hampton to three Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Championships. I have known of Tim for a very long time, and I always watch his success from a far … I’m impressed. He has extensive experience at nearly every level of basketball, both in college and AAU. He fits in perfectly with the rest of the staff and I can’t wait for us to get started.”

While at Northeastern, Valentine assisted in providing leadership and staff support in planning, developing, and implementing an instructional program for women’s basketball. He assisted the academic coordinator with study hall times for women’s basketball, practice planning, organizing game plays, supervising individual and team development, scout opponents, and coordinating the offseason.

Valentine coached All-CAA First Team honoree Derin Erogen and CAA Sixth-Man Player of the Year, Deja Bristol. In addition, he was instrumental in the skill development of graduate student-athlete Jamiya Braxton as Northeastern won a share of the CAA regular season championship.

Valentine also coached at fellow HBCU Hampton University, where he was named the MEAC Assistant Coach of the Year after helping the Pirates capture a 19-win season during the 2014-15 season.

Brown comes to Alabama A&M after spending the previous three seasons as an assistant coach under Thornton at Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

“I am thrilled to welcome Briona Brown to the Alabama A&M basketball family. Coach Bri has a lot of energy and work ethic that will be contagious to those around her,” Dawn Thornton said. “She has played major roles in helping to create winning cultures at every university she has been attached to. Having worked alongside me before, she understands the expectations and standards we set for our student-athletes. In addition, she is an excellent communicator, elite level recruiter and is passionate about creating ways to develop our young women. Our entire Bulldog Nation is going to fall in love with Briona and we welcome her to “The Hill”!

Brown played a part in the Golden Lions’ success over the past three seasons, as Coriah Beck and Maori Davenport received Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Second Team Honors. Maya Peat also earned All-SWAC Second Team recognition and became UAPB’s all-time leading rebounder. Zaay Green earned the SWAC’s Newcomer of the Year, Preseason Player of the Year, All-SWAC First Team, and became UAPB’s all-time leading scorer.

Prior to joining the UAPB staff, Brown was an assistant at Jacksonville University for three seasons. Brown helped the Dolphins to a four-game improvement, three in conference play, from year one to year two. Known for her on-floor leadership and versatility, she passed that along to the young frontcourt that she has tutored the last three seasons.

Valentine and Brown join Erika Sisk, who Dawn Thornton announced in early May as an Assistant Coach.

When a coach recruits a player they are committed to seeing them through getting a degree, in a perfect world. But sometimes things change, players leave, coaches leave and sometimes the connection can get broken. But when Dawn Thornton left the University of Arkansas Pine-Bluff to take over at another HBCU, Alabama A&M, she didn’t lose track of her old UAPB team.

Two years ago Thornton brought in 11 transfers to play for the Lady Golden Lions. Last Saturday Thornton attended the UAPB commencement and had the opportunity to see nine of those players graduate. She posted on social media that the remaining two players are on track to graduate in the fall of 2024.

Not all of the former players will be former forever. A handful of players, four to be exact, decided to transfer from UAPB to Alabama A&M. One of the players who graduated this spring at UAPB but will continue on at AAMU is Maori Davenport. She averaged 5.6 rebounds per game along with 4.7 points as part of two woman post lineup at UAPB.

Thornton penned a special tribute to Davenport after she accepted her degree.

“The level of faith that you have in me is MORE than enough! Mo Mo, thank u for choosing me, I got us & I won’t let u down! I’m proud of you and all that you have accomplished! Crazy part is… U haven’t scratched the surface. But.. It’s time! Let’s get it Moe!,” Thornton wrote.

The other side of the post lineup for that UAPB team was held down by Maya Peat, who also had a special moment with her coach at the HBCU graduation.

“What’s understood will never have to be said… Well baby girl… it’s UR time! (You) have given me 4 wonderful years & the way I have watched u grow is simply breathtaking. I love you more than you will ever know. @mayajpeat Go be BOLD… be BEAUTIFUL… and be YOU!! #unapologetic,” she wrote.

Dawn Thornton was introduced as the Alabama A&M head coach on April 6. She had spent the past five seasons as head coach at UAPB.

See who's coming and going in the fury of the NCAA transfer portal.

The post HBCU football caught in revolving door of NCAA transfer portal appeared first on HBCU Gameday.

]]>
The spring window to enter the NCAA transfer portal closed at the end of April and HBCU football has seen a steady procession of talented players coming and going from HBCUs to FBS football via the transfer portal in the first two weeks of May.

One trend has become clear among all the transfer portal comings and goings in HBCU football. HBCUs are losing productive players who have been developed at the FCS level to FBS schools that are looking for a proven entity.

Leading the pack of HBCU transfer portal departures is a linebacker duo from Tennessee State that was one of the most productive in all of FCS football in 2023. Monroe Beard III and Terrell Allen combined for nearly 100 tackles last season while anchoring the TSU defense in one of its most competitive seasons in recent years.

Monroe Beard III came to Tennessee State from another HBCU, the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Beard has yet to announce his next landing spot as of the publication of this article. He was once listed as the top-ranked linebacker in the transfer portal and has received interest from FBS schools like Georgia Tech, Kansas State, and SMU.

His former Tennessee State teammate Terrell Allen committed to Tulane University of the American Athletic Conference on May 12. Allen had “one of the best individual seasons by a Tiger defensive lineman in TSU history” according to his bio on the school website.

NCAA transfer portal HBCU Football FBS

He finished the 2023 season with 65 tackles (44 solo, 21 assists) and led the FCS in both sacks (14.5) and tackles for loss (28), with his 28 TFLs (tackles for a loss) setting a new TSU single-season record en route to winning the 2023 Big South-OVC Defensive Player of the Year award.

The Tulane Green Wave added another productive HBCU defensive player to its roster when they signed former Grambling defensive lineman Javon Carter. Carter played in 33 games at Grambling racking up 69 tackles 7 sacks and 3 forced fumbles.

Devonta Davis is another productive HBCU talent headed to the FBS after a long career in black college football. The 6’3, 296-pound defensive lineman out of Jackson State announced his commitment to Florida Atlantic University on May 3rd.

Davis signed with Jackson State in 2019 and had 66 tackles, 18.5 TFLs (tackles for a loss), and 7 sacks in 36 games as a Tiger.

HBCU football has a long-standing reputation for finding and developing players who, for whatever reason, didn’t get the opportunity to play at the FBS level out of high school, and before the NCAA transfer portal changed the game, that level of commitment was often rewarded with a players loyalty to the coaching staff that believed in them.

Now, the transfer portal era of NCAA football works more like a business, and a productive year/career at an FCS HBCU will likely result in a too-good-to-pass-up chance to prove yourself at an FBS school.

And while HBCU football is losing productive players, the portal is causing FBS schools to lose experienced players who are falling down the depth charts due to portal newcomers, creating a pipeline of ready-to-impact FCS players looking to get some reps at an HBCU.

The transfer portal door is revolving in both directions at Jackson State. The Tigers lost a long-time plug on its defensive line while gaining an experienced FBS defensive back in Eastern Michigans Cameron Smith and a quality running back in former Kansas State and Akron running back Clyde Price III.

https://twitter.com/clydepriceIII/status/1789735745273385132

Cameron Smith, a former three-star recruit from Cleveland, Ohio racked up 75 tackles in 27 games with one interception and 5 pass deflections at EMU.

Clyde Price III began his career at Kansas State and appeared in one game. He transferred to Akron for the 2022 season appearing in all 12 games including five starts. He rushed for 309 yards on 99 carries with a team-high seven rushing touchdowns. After not seeing any action in 2023, Price heads to one of the top teams in HBCU football looking to reestablish himself at the FCS level.

North Carolina A&T is looking to rebuild its football program in the Coastal Athletic Association and the addition of Appalachian State University transfer defensive end DeAndre Dingle-Prince gives them a key piece on defense heading into the 2024 season.

Dingle-Prince is as experienced as they come in FBS football, playing in 45 games over his four-year career at App State where he put up 77 tackles and 3 forced fumbles.

Some HBCUs are making it a point to get experienced FBS veterans, while others are taking a shot at players who haven’t had a chance to showcase their skills on the field.

Deljay Bailey, a former three-star quarterback from Petal, Mississippi committed to Ole Miss out of high school, and after sitting a year, Bailey has committed to Grambling State, hoping the move to FCS nets him a chance to put some college game film together.

Andre Craig committed to Kennesaw State in 2022 after setting school records for receiving yards, touchdowns, and receptions during his final season at Meadowcreek High School. Craig had 1,143 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns as a senior and was a three-time all-regional selection.

After not playing for a year at Kennesaw he transferred to the University of Alabama for two months before entering the transfer portal for the second time in two years.

On May 12, 2024, Andre Craig announced his commitment to Alabama A&M University, giving the Bulldogs a high-ceiling player ready to contribute immediately.

Time will tell whether the transfer portal era will continue to push the best in HBCU football out to the FBS or if the players coming down from FBS will turn into stars at the FCS level, but for now, the revolving door of the NCAA transfer is still swinging both ways for HBCUs, which might be the best you can ask for in the current NCAA football climate.

The HBCU Women’s basketball crown feels like it’s in play for more teams now that Tomekia Reed has left Jackson State for UNC Charlotte. The team making the most noise this offseason might be Alabama A&M, an HBCU in Huntsville, Alabama whose recently hired head coach Dawn Thornton has added Shelomi Sanders to her roster and now brings in a talented young assistant from the SEC. Below is the press release announcement on the latest hiring in HBCU women’s basketball, as AAMU hires former Ole Miss player and assistant coach Erika Sisk.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. | Alabama A&M University head women’s basketball coach Dawn Thornton welcomed the addition of Erika Sisk on Tuesday as an assistant coach for the upcoming season.

“I have had an opportunity to witness so much talent in Erika Sisk for quite some time,” said Dawn Thornton. “I have great respect for her recruiting efforts and on-court player development. What stands out the most is her tireless work ethic, having most recently been on staff at Ole Miss, who has a run in the NCAA tournament every year, it’s a no brainer that passion and #BIGENERGY will follow Coach Sisk to “The Hill.” We’re excited to welcome Erika to Alabama A&M, and look forward to seeing her immediate impact on our program.”

Sisk comes to AAMU after spending two seasons in Oxford, Miss. at the University of Mississippi.

“First, I want to thank God for placing me here on “The Hill!” I am thrilled and very excited about this opportunity,” Sisk said. “During this transitional process I have been impressed by the commitment, eagerness, and ultimate vision of our women’s basketball program. I have the utmost respect for Coach Thornton and I am humbled by joining her staff and embracing the entire Bulldog Basketball family.”

While at Ole Miss, Sisk was elevated after her first season to serve as the special assistant to the head coach and an assistant coach, where she served a vital role in assisting the Ole Miss Rebels in preparation for games by examining and studying film and utilizing outstanding basketball skill-set as a member of the scout team. In addition, she helped build successful and effective relationships with the parents of student-athletes, ensuring athletes are meeting academic requirements and compliance.

A standout Rebel from 2014-17, Sisk appeared in 94 games, starting in 92. The Oxford, Miss. native, averaged 8.4 points, 3.2 rebounds as well as 3.2 assists per game throughout her three seasons. Her 254 career steals rank fifth all-time in Ole Miss history, grabbing 201 as a Rebel. Sisk became Ole Miss’ 27th 1,000-point scorer in 2016, as she averaged 8.1 points per game as a senior.

Following her time in a Rebel jersey, Sisk headed overseas playing one season in Greece for Team Petrolina AEK. In her lone season in 2018, Sisk led the Cyprus League in scoring with an average of 22.8 points per game as Petrolina reached the second round of the playoffs.

Sisk then returned to Mississippi to run Sisk Select Basketball, traveling around the country and participating in AAU tournaments while providing mentorship and developing players to their full potential. In addition, she was the primary representative for NFL player D.K. Metcalf.

Sisk graduated from Ole Miss in 2016 with a degree in general studies with minors in recreation administration, education, and legal studies. In 2023, Sisk received a Certification in Intercollegiate Athletic Administration from the University of Mississippi.

Former Pittsburgh Steeler John Stallworth delivered an inspiring address on May 3 during the Alabama A&M spring commencement. Stallworth, an alumnus of the Alabama HBCU and member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, wasn’t there for just words. Like he did in the NFL for many years, he brought the action.

Following his commencement address, Stallworth presented a generous donation of over $1.2 million to his alma mater in support of student scholarships.

“Playing football was never the end goal,” he says. “My goal was to own my own business. Football was the vehicle I chose to get there. I left A&M with a bachelor’s degree in business and returned in the off season to receive my MBA all in preparation for realizing my dream of having my own business.”

Stallworth is a 1974 AAMU grad who had a phenomenal Pro Football career. The wide receiver had over 8,700 receiving yards and 63 touchdown receptions. In his career Stallworth won four NFL Super Bowl rings. He was First-team All-Pro in 1979 and was named NFL Comeback Player of the Year in 1984. He’s a three time Pro Bowler and a part of the Pittsburgh Steelers Hall of Honor.

Despite all of the highlights, Stallworth told the HBCU graduates the low times are often just as important.

“Class of 2024, all the events of your life determine the person you will grow to be, the highlights and the lowlights, we’re shaped by them both,” he said. “If we’re truly honest with ourselves, whether looking back over the last four years or the last 50, I think we can agree that those lowlight events – those times we prayed would never happen again, those days that we were thankful we just made it through – coupled with the highlights, give us a deeper understanding of ourselves.”

John Stallworth was selected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2002.

The battle for supremacy in SWAC women’s basketball hit the reset button this off season. Tomekia Reed leaving Jackson State has left the throne wide open and Dawn Thornton from Alabama A&M may be ready to fill the gap. The former Arkansas Pine Bluff coach hit the recruiting trail hard seemingly before her boxes arrived in Huntsville.

The big splash came on April 25 when Shelomi Sanders, the daughter of Deion Sanders, announced she was signing with Alabama A&M after leaving Colorado. While that naturally drew a lot of new eye balls to the program and maybe woke up some older ones, it was just the beginning.

A handful of players followed Thornton from UAPB by going through the portal process and landing in the Rocket City. Kalia Walker brings her 8.2 points per game over to AAMU along with teammate Maori Davenport, who averaged 5.6 rebounds per game along with 4.7 points. Davenport is a big with lots of potential who played alongside Maya Peat, at times offering a high low post combination. A similar combination could exist with Alisha Wilson, who announced she will return to AAMU. Wilson is 6’2″ and averaged 9 points and nearly 10 rebounds a game last year.

Also coming over from UAPb is Kourtney Rittenberry who averaged 3.4 ppg last year and Coriah Beck, an All SWAC performer. Out of the four carry overs from Thornton’s old school, Beck is the biggest catch. She averaged 12.8 points per game last year before missing the SWAC Tournament with an injury.

Beck was a second team all conference selection and was the seventh best three pointer shooter in the league, percentage wise.

Dawn Thornton has quickly made a recruiting impact in her first month at Alabama A&M.

The former UAPB players were just the beginning of the Arkansas Relocation Program. Teammates Mailyn Wilkerson and Lauryn Pendleton both transferred over from Arkansas State. Wilkerson averaged 6.9 ppg over the last three years, while Pendleton poured in 11.7 ppg.

Also in the mix are a pair of teammates from the University of Arkansas Little Rock. Jaiyah Harris-Smith averaged 5.8 ppg last year for Little Rock, while Tia Harvey contributed 4.9 ppg.

The Alabama gang on the squad will consist of the returning Wilson along with Darian Burgin who announced that she was returning. Burgin averaged 8.7 ppg for last year’s team. And an intriguing prospect is Kennedi Hawkins from Calhoun Community College in Alabama. This past season Hawkins set a school record with 42 points and 20 rebounds. The competition in the SWAC will be a step up but it’ll be interesting to see how much of that scorning prowess carries over.

Dawn Thornton has been preaching “Big Energy” on social media and she’s shown it herself on the recruiting trail. Having been on the job less than a month she was able to quickly assemble the core of her team heading into the summer months. Six months from now the world will see how this team comes together and if it claim the throne in the SWAC. It will soon be time for take off in Huntsville.

Shelomi Sanders, daughter of former Jackson State head coach Deion Sanders, is heading back to an HBCU to play basketball after entering the transfer portal from the University of Colorado earlier this month. Sanders announced via her YouTube page that she would attend Alabama A&M University to play for the new Bulldog WBB head coach Dawn Thornton.

The vlog-style video shows Shelomi Sanders during her recruiting visit to Alabama A&M. She checks out the gym, weight room, and locker room where her locker already has her nameplate and her number 22 jersey hanging inside.

About 14 minutes into the video, Shelomi talks to the camera to make her commitment official.

“So yea I was kinda spotty with the recording…” Shelomi says in the YouTube video titled I’M TAKING MY TALENTS TO…..😱, “but I was just enjoying the moment, because… I’m a Bulldog!”

“I had a good time, y’all can see I committed, and we finna tee up!” she says excitedly.

Shelomi Sanders started her college basketball career at the same place her father, Deion Sanders began his college football coaching career, signing with Jackson State University while her father and brothers were still in Jackson in April 2022.

Coming out of high school she was named first-team All-District for District 10 6A in Texas at Rockwall-Heath High School in Rockwell, Texas after averaging 16 points, six rebounds, and three steals as a Senior.

After appearing in only two games for Jackson State during her Freshman season in 2022-2023, She transferred to the University of Colorado, where she would again joined her father and brothers, this time in Boulder, Colorado.

As a member of the Buffalo WBB squad this past season, Shelomi Sanders played 11 minutes in five games as a redshirt freshman, recording three points, three rebounds, and a steal.

With Shelomi Sanders back in HBCU basketball at Alabama A&M for the beginning of the Dawn Thornton era in Huntsville. Alabama A&M women’s basketball now has all eyes on the Bulldogs looking ahead to the 2024-2025 season, especially with Tomeka Reed making her departure from Jackson State to become the new head coach at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
