Alcorn State is expected to hire Jake Morton as its next head coach, according to a report by Jon Rothstein. The move is the latest in a busy offseason across HBCU basketball, as Morton steps in to replace Landon Bussie, who left last month to take over at Chicago State.

Morton brings a deep resume to the HBCU ranks, having served as an assistant coach at numerous Division I programs and currently completing his first season at Florida State under Leonard Hamilton. His return to head a program aligns with Alcorn’s desire to maintain momentum after Bussie helped make the Braves a consistent force in the SWAC and the broader HBCU basketball landscape.

A former standout at the University of Miami, Morton played for Hamilton from 1989 to 1993, later returning to the Hurricanes as an assistant coach. He helped guide Miami to three straight 20-win seasons and a 2008 NCAA Tournament berth. His coaching path includes stops at East Carolina, Jacksonville State, Coppin State, and even an early stop at HBCU Bowie State, where he began his coaching career in 2000.

Morton’s time at Jacksonville State marked one of the most successful stretches in program history, including an Atlantic Sun regular-season title and an NCAA Tournament appearance. His teams averaged 20 wins per season, a level of consistency Alcorn State fans will welcome.

Alcorn State is aiming to stay competitive in the SWAC and nationally among HBCUs, and Jake Morton’s hiring signals a commitment to experience and proven results. As HBCU programs continue to raise their profiles and invest in high-level coaching talent, Morton’s arrival is both a reunion with his roots and a chance to lead his own program after one year at Florida State.

Bussie joins CSU following a standout tenure as the head coach at HBCU Alcorn State University, where he led the Braves to back-to-back Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) regular-season championships in 2022 and 2023. He was named SWAC Coach of the Year in both seasons, solidifying his reputation as one of the top coaching minds in college basketball. Under his leadership, Alcorn State consistently developed high-level talent, producing multiple All-Conference players and earning national recognition within HBCU basketball circles.

Before his time at Alcorn State, Bussie spent five seasons as an assistant coach at Prairie View A&M University. Helping guide the Panthers to multiple SWAC championships and an NCAA Tournament appearance. His coaching career also includes successful stops at Xavier University of Louisiana. Where he played a key role in the program’s sustained success.

“I am excited, grateful, and motivated to begin my journey at Chicago State University,” said Bussie.  “It’s an honor to be part of this great institution and to work under Dr. Carroll. Bussie, a Baltimore, Maryland native, earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Xavier University of Louisiana. His experience in player development, recruiting, and program building will be instrumental as he takes the reins at Chicago State.

Reports of Bussie becoming the Cougars next basketball coach were first reported by Adam Nelson. The news comes six days after the Braves’ elimination from the 2025 Southwestern Athletic Conference tournament in Atlanta. Bethune Cookman defeated Alcorn 69-60 on Thursday in the quarterfinals of the conference tournament.

This season, the 37-year-old led the Braves to a 11-21 mark overall and a 7-11 finish in Southwestern Athletic Conference play. Alcorn earned the No. 6 seed in this year’s SWAC tournament. In five seasons, Bussie compiled a 66-83 record overall while finishing 59-26 in conference action.

During his tenure, Bussie led the HBCU to back-to-back SWAC regular-season championships in 2022 and 2023 and earned SWAC Coach of the Year honors those same years. The Braves’ regular-season success also resulted in the program earning consecutive appearances in the National Invitational Tournament in 2022 and 2023.

Prior to Alcorn, Bussie served as an assistant coach at Prairie View from 2014 to 2020 and as an assistant at NAIA HBCU Xavier in Louisiana from 2010 to 2013.

Now, Bussie joins a Cougars’ program that finished 4-28 overall and 4-12 in Northeast Conference action. Chicago State parted ways with former head coach Scott Spinelli on March 7. 

Despite the rough 2024-25 campaign, the Cougars appeared in the 2024 College Basketball Invitational tournament, making a second-round appearance in the event.

While Gourdine’s mother watched her celebrate with her teammates after the championship win, the first person Gourdine called was her father, Jerome.

Before Saturday’s contest, Jerome told Gourdine that the Jaguars’ contest against the Braves was the moment — playing for a chance to compete in the women’s NCAA tournament — she had been waiting for her entire life.

“I’ve been dreaming of this [playing in March Madness] since I was a little girl,” Gourdine told HBCU GameDay.

When the All-SWAC women’s tournament selection dialed her father’s number, he answered the phone with a simple message. But for Gourdine, who finished the game with nine points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals in the victory, it was one that was much deeper than winning Saturday’s SWAC title game.

“I am so happy for you,” Gourdine recalled the statement from her dad. “It just meant everything. He was really the one who really worked me out, got me to play [basketball]. …It was only right that I called him [after Jaguars’ win].”

During the regular season, Alcorn defeated Southern 59-55 in overtime on Feb. 1 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Gourdine, who finished with 13 points, six rebounds and two assists in that contest, never forgot the feeling of losing the previous contest. Even more, a year ago, the Braves eliminated the Jaguars 59-52 in the quarterfinals of the 2024 SWAC Tournament.

But according to Gourdine, Southern didn’t view the game as a “rematch.”

“…We just locked in,” Gourdine said. “We didn’t want to take it personal and try to do too much. We treated it [the game] as a regular game and came out on top.

Gourdine, who transferred to Southern last season after two years at Temple, found a home in playing for Jaguars head coach Carlos Funchess. However, the process of Gourdine aiding Southern to win its second SWAC tourney title in the last three seasons and the program’s seventh since 2002 was not easy. 

“A lot of people don’t see them [players] spending hours in the weight room in the summer or running suicides or line drills,” Funchess said in the postgame news conference. “Getting up 400 or 500 shots … getting in early in the morning, at 5:30 to get some extra shots in. People don’t see that. …They think you just throw a jersey on and go out and practice a few times and go win a game. …When you start doing this from June 3 until [now], it’s a lot of man hours that’s been put into this.”

With the Jaguars’ win, Gourdine fulfilled one of her goals this season to capture a SWAC tournament title. In the process, she captured her dream of earning a chance to feel the taste of March Madness in women’s basketball. The Baltimore native has never played nor attended a women’s NCAA tournament game.

On Sunday, Gourdine, along with her teammates, will find out which team Southern will face in the women’s NCAA tournament with the last four at-large teams — programs sitting at 65 through 68 — on March 19 and March 20 before the first round of the tournament begins on March 21. Gourdine has waited patiently to play on the national stage. However, the preparation for the bright lights on the hardwood started when she was 8 years old, competing against he two older sisters and her male cousins. She credits them for her toughness on the court

“That’s where the dog and the roughness come from,” Gourdine said.

That grit and determination has served Gourdine well. As of Saturday night, Southern is projected to play in a First Four matchup as the No. 16 seed in Region I Birmingham. If the Jaguars win that game, they will face the projected No. 1 seed South Carolina.

With the SWAC tourney behind her, the Jaguars leading scorer will seek to help Southern continue its trail of magic in March and earn a win in the NCAA tournament.

The Braves’ HBCU WBB star registered a double-double performance, finishing with 20 points, 13 rebounds, three assists and two blocks to lift Alcorn (13-17, 10-8) to a semifinal matchup against Texas Southern (16-14, 14-4) on Friday. While Brown’s impact was certainly felt offensively in the game, the SWAC’s Defensive Player of the Year played an integral part in the Braves outrebounding the Bulldogs (40-29), including 25-18 on the defensive glass. 

Destiny steps up

“Destiny [Brown] really made some big plays for us down the stretch when we needed her to,” said Braves head coach Nate Kilbert postgame after the Braves’ win. “But that’s what she’s been doing all year.”

Ironically, during the HBCU hoops regular season, Brown’s best performance came against Alabama A&M, where she notched a double-double and a season-high 25 points and 12 rebounds in the Braves’ win. Although Alcorn notched the win, Gilbert had doubts about his team overcoming moments of adversity throughout the contest.

In the third quarter, AAMU’s defensive pressure on the ball and its ability to generate steals played a big role in the Bulldogs outsourcing the Braves 20-12. Twelve of their total in the quarter came on fast-break opportunities. Alcorn also committed nine of its 26 turnovers in the third quarter.

But Gilbert’s team didn’t waver. The Braves flipped the script in the fourth quarter, holding the AAMU to 14 points on 33.3% shooting from the floor while Alcorn poured in 21 points off 6-of-11 shots from the field. 

“… When we playing our best basketball is when we’re playing our best defense, when we lock it down on people,” Gilbert said.

The Braves also added five of their 13 total second chance points in the quarter due in part to Brown’s rebounding.

“In the second half, when they [Alabama A&M] came out with that pressure, I was getting in my head and my teammates right there telling me, like, we need you,” said Brown, who went scoreless in the third quarter. “… Basketball is a game of runs, so they’re going to make their run. We’re going to make our run, we have to stay level headed… I think my team did a great job of that., We kept our eyes on the prize.”

Alcorn will face Texas Southern on Friday at 11 am ET in the semi-final round of the 2025 SWAC Tournament at The Gateway Center Arena at College Park.

The season kicks off on Aug. 30 with a road game against Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana. Week 2 brings another away matchup, this time against Alabama A&M University in Huntsville on Sept. 6. The Braves then face their toughest non-conference test with a Sept. 13 visit to SEC powerhouse Mississippi State University in Starkville.

After a well-timed bye week, Alcorn State opens its SWAC schedule on the road, facing the University of Arkansas – Pine Bluff on Sept. 27. The Braves then return to Spinks-Casem Stadium in October for a two-game homestand. Prairie View A&M University visits on Oct. 4, followed by a non-conference clash with Lincoln University (CA) on Oct. 11.

A trip to Tallahassee, Florida, on Oct. 18 pits the Braves against Florida A&M University, while Mississippi Valley State University visits Lorman on Oct. 25 to close out the month.

November sees Alcorn State traveling to Houston on Nov. 1 to face Texas Southern University before hosting two pivotal SWAC rivals: Southern University on Nov. 8 and Grambling State University on Nov. 15. The season concludes with a highly anticipated rivalry game against Jackson State University in Jackson, Mississippi, on Nov. 22.

With a challenging schedule and key games at home, Alcorn State is hoping to compete for SWAC supremacy in 2025.

Alabama State also shines among the top five FCS attendance teams, ranking fifth with an impressive average attendance of 18,868. The Hornets’ strong showing highlights the deep pride and commitment of their supporters, further solidifying their reputation as a premier HBCU program.

Within the top 10, two more HBCU schools make a significant impact. Southern University ranks seventh, averaging 18,463 fans per game, while Florida A&M secures the ninth spot with 17,043 attendees. Both schools are celebrated for their rich traditions and dedicated alumni networks, which contribute to their success and vibrant game-day atmospheres.

Beyond the top 10, HBCU programs continue to demonstrate their influence in college football. Norfolk State (average attendance: 14,544), South Carolina State (13,962), North Carolina A&T (13,265), Alcorn State (11,408), and Grambling State (11,334) all rank within the top 20 in attendance. This ranking further showcases the depth and passion of HBCU fandom. These programs consistently draw loyal supporters, fostering strong community ties and preserving long-standing traditions.

“Our previous interim head coach left the university, and we had a short period of time to recruit additional players after the new soccer coach arrived,” Alcorn State interim vice president of marketing and communication Maxine Greenleaf said in an email to the Clarion Ledger.

Ken Kabiru was hired as the Alcorn State University Soccer coach on July 22.

Unfortunately, that’s not the worst of the news.

Key issues include inadequate facilities—such as showers with bats and snakes, and the absence of hot water—as well as unfulfilled promises of soccer equipment like cleats. The training room was reportedly understaffed and poorly equipped, with unqualified students performing medical treatments.

These allegations came to light in a letter signed by 15 current and former players at the HBCU. Additionally, the head coach, Ken Kabiru, who was hired just before the season, has a history of legal troubles that further complicate the situation.

The SWAC says it is aware of the current status of the Alcorn State program. 

“The Southwestern Athletic Conference has been formally notified that Alcorn State University will cancel the 2024 Women’s Soccer season,” the SWAC wrote. “Alcorn State University has been sanctioned in accordance with the SWAC Constitution, Bylaws and Sports Regulations. We look forward to the return of Alcorn State Lady Braves Soccer as one of ten participating member institutions in the sport of Women’s Soccer within the Southwestern Athletic Conference.” 

The program has won just 39 games since the HBCU established it back in 2003.

The Bay Area Panthers are bringing back a familiar face with the re-signing of former HBCU quarterback Felix Harper out of Alcorn State, who has been with the franchise for the past two seasons.

“We are thrilled to have Felix back with us. He is a full-field reader who’s confident and thoughtful about where he wants to place the football,” said Panthers Head Coach Rob Keefe. “He is capable of extending plays both inside and outside the pocket and is poised in the face of both physical and situational pressure.”

In 2024, Felix Harper played in nine games, completing 63 of 102 passes (62 percent) for 661 yards, with 11 touchdowns. He was the team’s third-leading rusher, accumulating 178 yards and seven scores. Harper made four starts and recorded three wins against playoff teams—two against San Diego and one at Vegas. In the victory over the Knight Hawks, Harper completed 15 of 20 passes for 169 yards, three touchdowns, in addition to racking up 68 yards on the ground and one score. On July 20 in San Diego, Harper led a second-half comeback with a scoring pass and a rushing touchdown during a 17-0 run that secured a 30-20 win for the Panthers.

The two-time All-American from HBCU Alcorn State is grateful for the opportunity and says the past two seasons have prepared him to be a major contributor.

“I want to thank Coach Keefe for bringing me back and believing in me as we take the next journey. Not everyone gets the opportunity to keep playing this game, and I want to be a leader for this team,” said Felix Harper. “I’ve made progress each year. Going into my third year, I’m definitely going to be ready to compete each and every day.”

They are a member of the Indoor Football League (IFL) and were to begin play in 2020 at Oakland Arena as the Oakland Panthers. GRAMBLING, La. – Alcorn State’s Noah Kiani’s game-winning 27-yard field goal late in the fourth quarter was enough to hand Grambling State a 17-15 loss at Eddie G. Robinson Memorial Stadium on Saturday afternoon in a SWAC west division HBCU football showdown.

Missed opportunities on offense plagued GSU (3-3 overall, 0-2 SWAC). The Tigers struggled to convert trips to the red zone into touchdowns, scoring two field goals and one touchdown on four possessions inside the red zone.
 
Grambling State quarterback Myles Crawley was 16-for-28 for 149 yards and one interception. Saturday snapped Crawley’s four-game streak of throwing at least one touchdown. Crawley was also sacked four times. 
 
GSU found some success on the ground, rushing for 157 yards. The Tigers had three running backs run for over 50 yards. Tre Bradford led the way with 58 yards on 11 carries. Dedrick Talbert added 52 yards a touchdown on 11 attempts and Bull Hargrove toted the ball for 50 yards on nine touches. 
 
Defensively, Grambling State gave up 335 yards of total offense. Linebacker Andrew Jones led the Tigers with 11 total tackles with five solo stops. Blake Davis nabbed an interception in the second quarter. He finished with eight total tackles. 
 
Alcorn State got on the scoreboard first when Jacorian Sewell broke loose for a 65-yard touchdown run, giving the Braves a 7-0 lead with 6:21 left in the first quarter. 

 
Reed Harradine gave GSU its first points of the day when he connected on a 30-yard field goal on the Tigers’ ensuing drive. Harradine made it a 7-6 game when he knocked a 22-yard field goal with 10:53 remaining in the second quarter.
 
ASU stretched its advantage to 14-6 when quarterback Xzavier Vaughn found Stemarion Edwards for a 75-yard score with 9:32 remaining until halftime. 
 
Grambling State pulled within two points of Alcorn State with 38 seconds left in the third quarter when Talbert capped a 12-play, 63-yard drive with a 3-yard run. The two-point conversion attempt failed, making it a 14-12 game.
 
Harradine gave GSU its only lead of the game when he drilled a 44-yard field goal with 10:53 to go in the HBCU football contest. 

 
Alcorn State starting quarterback Xzavier Vaughn was 10-for-18 for 149 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Jacorian Sewell ran for 102 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries in the crucial SWAC contest.

Alcorn State kicks off its 2024 HBCU football season with a challenging test on Thursday night as it travels to Birmingham to face UAB. According to new head coach Cedric Thomas, the Braves will look to set the tone defensively as he prepares his unit for a tough battle against UAB’s efficient quarterback, Jacob Zeno. Thomas recognizes the significance of the game for his defensive front, starting with standout defensive lineman Malachi Bailey.

“You know, that’s going to start with Malachi Bailey,” Thomas said. “I like these games…there’s some money implications behind it. However, you still get evaluation. We got three kids that are playing in the league now, and they’re going to look at these guys from Malachi and guys like that.”

Bailey, along with Kayvon Henderson and other key players like Gideon Spottsville and Stemarion Edwards, will be crucial in applying pressure on UAB’s offensive line. Thomas emphasized the importance of disrupting the Blazers’ offensive rhythm.

“Malachi’s got to do a really good job of stretching those tackles on the edge, him and Kayvon Henderson,” he said. “From an offensive line standpoint, if we can get some pressure on the quarterback and not get knocked off the ball, we have a chance on the back end.”

The Braves’ defensive challenge will be heightened by facing UAB’s starting quarterback, Jacob Zeno, who transferred from Baylor and has proven himself to be a poised presence in the pocket. Thomas compared Zeno to another talented HBCU passer in former Jackson State and current Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders, highlighting the UAB quarterback’s efficiency.

“Shedeur-like”

“They’ve got a really good quarterback that’s cool, calm, and collected in the pocket,” Thomas said. “Kind of puts you in the mind of a Shedeur when you’re talking about it from a numerical standpoint…70% or close to it in percentages that says he’s efficient with the football.”

According to the UAB athletics website, Zeno has the numbers to back up the accolades. Zeno set the single-season record for completions (279) and completion percentage (73.6). He also threw for the second-most yards in a season with 3,126. Zeno finished the season ranked second nationally in completion percentage. He set a UAB FBS single-game passing record with 484 yards and five touchdowns against Florida Atlantic.

With Zeno’s accuracy and composure, Thomas knows his defensive line will have to be sharp and disciplined to limit UAB’s offensive production.

“We’ve got to do a good job up front attacking the O-line and changing some looks up because he’s a savvy quarterback. So that’s what we’ve got to do–attack that offense to try to have some success.”

Ultimately, the game will likely hinge on how well Alcorn State’s defensive line can disrupt Zeno’s timing and keep the Blazers’ offense out of rhythm. Thomas has confidence in his group of pass rushers to rise to the occasion.

“That starts with the guys up front,” Thomas said. “We expect Gideon Spottsville, Kayvon Henderson, Malachi Bailey, and Stemarion Edwards to kind of get after it from a defensive standpoint to give us a chance.”

As the Mississippi HBCU faces a higher-level FBS opponent, they’ll be looking to make a statement with their defensive front leading the charge.

That might sound like a step back – but it doesn’t appear that McNair feels that way. He recently opened up about his transition from his alma mater, and a school he led to two SWAC titles, in an interview with “Locked on HBCU.”

“When you’re at a place so long, a place that you love and you’re a two-time graduate of the university – getting an opportunity to get my BS and my Masters – You tend to love the place that you graduated from. Your alma mater,” McNair said. “But I think, at the same time, your alma mater has to love you too. The things that you’ve done in the past, the winning tradition that we’ve had and the championships that we’ve brought in as a coaching staff. But I think some of the things that I really expected to happen – didn’t happen. Just coming from the leadership, things that wasn’t done right.” 

McNair didn’t elaborate on exactly what things weren’t done right. But he said he knew it was time to make a move when it cost him his peace. 

“Sometimes you lose a lot of sleep at night with some of the things you can’t control. When that stuff started happening, and you’re not really happy anymore – it’s time to move on and find your happy place. The biggest thing for me – it was bittersweet but I had to do something for myself to kind of make myself happy and unstressful. I’m at a place now where I can sit back and enjoy myself, being a position coach. And hopefully one day I’ll have the opportunity to be a head coach again.”

It looked like he wouldn’t have to wait long to get that shot. McNair was reportedly the front-runner for the Texas Southern University job opening in December. McNair says he interviewed for the job and hoped to get it, but after several highly publicized board of trustees meetings, Cris Dishman – not McNair – was named as head coach.

The even-keeled McNair has taken the events of the last year in stride. 

“I understand the business process of everything,” McNair said of the Texas Southern University job. “As a head coach and as a position coach – things happen. It’s really nothing to cry about. You just have to roll your sleeves up and find other employment.”

There’s no telling how long Fred McNair will be in Baton Rouge. While calling Southern his ‘happy place’ he also stated he hopes to be a head coach once again. For now, he’s in the Columbia Blue and Gold and loving it.

“UNTOLD: The Murder of Air McNair” will launch Netflix’s UNTOLD documentary series next month. It is slated to premiere on Aug. 20 and is directed by Rodney Lucas and Taylor Alexander Ward. 

Steve McNair, often known as “Air McNair,” had a remarkable career both in college and the NFL. He played college football at Alcorn State, where he became one of the most prolific passers in NCAA history. McNair set numerous records, including throwing for 14,496 yards and 119 touchdowns. His senior year saw him finishing third in Heisman Trophy voting, a rare feat for a player from a historically black college and university (HBCU). McNair’s performance earned him the Walter Payton Award, recognizing him as the best player in Division I-AA (now FCS) football.

McNair was selected third overall by the Houston Oilers in the 1995 NFL Draft, becoming the highest-drafted African American quarterback at the time. Over his 13-year NFL career, McNair played for the Oilers, who later became the Tennessee Titans, and the Baltimore Ravens. He led the Titans to a Super Bowl appearance in 2000 and was named NFL co-MVP in 2003. McNair was known for his toughness, mobility, and ability to perform under pressure, amassing over 31,000 passing yards and 174 touchdown passes in his career. His legacy continues to inspire, and he is remembered as one of the greatest quarterbacks to emerge from an HBCU.

Alcorn State University is getting $8,311,736 for repairs, renovation and expansion to the Davey L. Whitney Complex. The gymnasium is the home of the Alcorn State University Braves men’s and women’s basketball teams and men’s and women’s volleyball teams.

Jackson State University, the largest of the three Mississippi HBCUs, is set for the largest allotment of all the schools on the list: $23,020,794. That money is for repairs, renovation and upgrades to campus buildings and facilities, including McAllister-Whiteside Hall and other critical campus facilities. The monies will also be spent for the development of alternative water resources. A total of $7 million of JSU’s funds will go for the purchase of a new residence hall.

Mississippi Valley State University – the smallest of the three HBCUs – has been awarded $8,856,405 for the construction and furnishing of a new residence hall and related facilities.

“Please everyone get that message out,” Polk told the Clarion-Ledger. “The chair has killed my bill. That way, I can sleep at night.”

The bill was introduced last month to the Senate Colleges and University Committee that would have led to three of the state’s nine universities shutting down. Three of those institutions are HBCUs – Alcorn State University, Jackson State University, and Mississippi Valley State University. 

Instead, SB 7525 moved out of committee, which will study the “efficiency” of those universities. 

“We had hearings earlier this year where we were looking at things, and we now have a lot of data and information that was presented and that was about the enrollment cliff that we’re seeing across the country, and how that would impact our Mississippi universities,” UC Chair and bill sponsor Sen. Nicole Boyd, R-Oxford, told the committee Monday at the Mississippi Capitol. “We’ve seen declining enrollments at smaller universities, we’ve seen increasing enrollments at some of our other universities. This would give us an opportunity to look at that over the summer with the task force.”

Mississippi Valley State currently has the lowest total enrollment with just under 2,200 students.

Gales was hired in November of 2020 as the Associate Head Coach, Offensive Coordinator and Quarterbacks Coach at Bluefield State, a school that had discontinued its football program in 1981. Gales helped lead the program to a 4-3 record in his lone season there.

Before building the program at Bluefield State, Gales spent two seasons at Arkansas-Pine Bluff, where, as the offensive coordinator, he took a team that hadn’t won more than two games in a season since 2014 and helped lead it to a winning record in 2019. That season, Gales directed an offense that averaged 443.4 yards per game, the third-most in the Southwestern Athletic Conference and the 17^th-most in NCAA Division I FCS. In his first year with the team in 2018, Gales devised an offense that ranked third in the SWAC with 423.5 yards per game, an improvement of over 100 yards per contest from the previous season.

In 2016 and 2017, Gales was the wide receivers coach at North Carolina Central and helped the Eagles win 17 games in that span. In 2016, Gales directed a receiving corps that scored 19 touchdowns, finished 18^thin the FCS in yards per completion. The Eagles went undefeated in conference play that season and played in the Air Force Reserve Celebration Bowl. NCCU again posted a winning record in 2017 and ranked fourth in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference in total offense, with Jacen Murphy leading the league in receptions per game while finishing third in total receiving yards.

Gales worked as the wide receivers coach at Mars Hill from 2006-09 and again from 2013-15. In between those stints, Gales served as the offensive coordinator and coached the running backs and receivers at Saint Augustine’s, helping the program twice break season records for points per game. In 2010, Gales helped lead the Falcons to a win in the Pioneer Bowl, marking the first postseason victory in program history.

Gales graduated from Southern Arkansas in 2002 with a Bachelor of Science degree in biology and a minor in human performance and recreation. He later earned a Master of Education degree in kinesiology from SAU in 2005.

Before entering the coaching ranks, Gales spent two seasons playing at Mt. San Antonio as a receiver before transferring to Southern Arkansas, where he helped the Muleriders win the 1997 Gulf South Conference championship. Gales served as an assistant at SAU from 2003-05, helping develop the program’s receivers.

Gales and his wife, Kizzy, have been married for 17 years and have six children: Devaughn, Kassidy, Braeden, Tailagua, Ettastajia, and Darius. Gales also has three grandchildren: Jhase, De’Mauri and Ava.

Thomas replaces Fred McNair after he held that seat for nearly a decade.

“Alcorn State University’s commitment to our football program and student athletes is unwavering,” said Dr. Tracy M. Cook. “I am thrilled to appoint Cedric Thomas as our new head football coach. I believe he is uniquely positioned to continue our championship winning tradition. His passion for the game, approach to leadership of our student athletes, and his vision for the future will continue to strengthen our culture of excellence as a leader in the Southwestern Athletic Conference.”

Interim Director of Athletics Robert Raines is pleased with the appointment of Thomas. “We are grateful that Coach Cedric Thomas has agreed to be our new head football coach,” stated Raines. “Thomas brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the position. As an Alcorn alumnus, Coach Thomas is a familiar face to the program, having served two stints with the Braves. He aligns perfectly with our culture, has a great command of the program, rapport with our players, and is committed to sustaining a winning program centered on strong academics, community outreach, and high character student athletes.”

Coach Thomas shared his thoughts on being selected for this new role at the university. “I am extremely humbled, thankful, and honored for this opportunity to lead the Alcorn State University Braves as the new head football coach,” said Thomas. “I want to continue to build on the foundation that was laid before me by so many legendary coaches, players, and staff. We will continue to make the University and alumni base proud of our championship culture.”

A seasoned leader, Coach Thomas rejoined the Alcorn State football staff in March of 2022 as the defensive coordinator. The Cleveland, Mississippi native takes the reigns of the program after a prior stint as the defensive back coach from 2012-2015 and the defensive coordinator in 2016 and 2017.

During his eight seasons with the Braves, Alcorn won four straight SWAC Eastern Division titles, including back-to-back SWAC titles in 2014 and 2015, and participated in the inaugural Celebration Bowl.

Before returning to Alcorn, Thomas spent the 2021 season as the head football coach of his junior college alma mater Mississippi Delta Community College. He led the Trojans to a 5-4 season with three student athletes receiving Mississippi Association of Community Colleges Conference All-Conference awards.

Thomas spent the 2020 season as the defensive back coach at the University of Southern Mississippi after a two-year stint as the head football coach at the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff, his undergraduate alma mater.

During his two years in Pine Bluff, Thomas helped lead the Golden Lions to a four-win improvement, as UAPB tripled their win total from two wins to six wins from 2018 to 2019. He coached 14 All-Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) honorees, including nine first-team selections.

Thomas served as the running backs coach at the University of Tennessee-Martin in 2002 before coming to MDCC in 2003, where he also spent the 2004 season. After a two-year term at Itawamba Community College in 2005 and 2006, he returned to MDCC for the 2007-2011 seasons.

The former MDCC and UAPB standout earned an Associate of Arts degree from MDCC in 1998, a bachelor’s degree in recreation in 2001 from UAPB, and a master’s degree in administration from Alcorn State University in 2015.

The former East Side High School graduate is married to Kelunda, and the couple has one daughter, Loegan. Thomas also has a son, Cedric Jr.

Alcorn State University announced on Tuesday that McNair is no longer the head coach of its program. It released the following statement at noon, CST. 

“I would like to thank Coach Fred McNair for his many years of service and dedication to Alcorn State University. We worked diligently to extend Coach McNair a multi-year contract which would have placed him in the top tier of the conference with both compensation, incentives, and additional incentives for assistant coaches,” said Robert Raines, interim director of intercollegiate athletics. “Unfortunately, we could not reach a mutual agreement.”

Coach McNair led the Alcorn State Braves for seven seasons and coached the team to four SWAC East Division titles and a pair of SWAC Championships. McNair holds a 38-17 SWAC record (.691 winning percentage) on the Alcon State sidelines while posting an overall record of 48-34 (.585). Last season, the Braves posted a 7-4 overall and 6-2 SWAC record.

The Alcorn State University family deeply appreciates Coach McNair for his exceptional leadership to the University’s student-athletes and his commitment to excellence on the field, in the classroom, and community. The University is especially appreciative of his unique legacy as a player and a coach in elevating not only the football program but also the University. The University wishes Coach McNair well in his future endeavors.

Alcorn State heads into the 2023-2024 season on the heels of an 18-14 record. ASU went 15-3 in SWAC play. 

Gone from last season’s squad is Dominic Brewton, who led the program in scoring with 12 points per game in 25.7 minutes per game. Both Jeremiah Kendall and Byron Joshua are back, though, as they averaged right at 11 points per game. Kendall also led the program with 6.7 rebounds and shot 49 percent from the field.

In terms of additions, one interesting new piece is Jalen Hawkins.

Hawkins started his career at Robert Morris back in 2019-2020 before hitting the transfer portal and landing at Norfolk State. He spent two seasons with NSU, helping the team win back-to-back MEAC titles during his time there. Hawkins averaged 12.6 points per game during the 2021-2022 seasons. He left NSU after that season, landing at Morehead State where he was limited to just six games. 

Picked to finish third in the SEC, Arkansas basketball is 5-0 all time against Alcorn State, all in Fayetteville. It has an even more impressive record in openers as it has won 49 consecutive. 

Arkansas basketball is a 24.5 favorite. The over/under is 144.5. The game is set for 8 PM EST and will be broadcast on the SEC Network.

He signed with the Jets as an undrafted free agent this spring after two standout seasons at Alcorn State. He recorded 149 total tackles including 25.5 tackles for loss – 14.5 in 2022 alone. He was an All-SWAC selection and participated in the HBCU Legacy Bowl earlier this year.

Claudin Cherelus was a three-star recruit out of Golden Gate (FL) HS where he served as a team captain. As a senior in high school, Cherelus recorded 50 tackles, four sacks, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery on defense his senior year. On offense, he registered 526 all-purpose yards and four touchdowns. A two-sport star in high school, Cherelus also played power forward in basketball at Golden Gate.

Cherelus started his career playing for UMass. He recorded 53 tackles in his two seasons there. 

His signing comes one day after former North Carolina Central and North Carolina A&T offensive lineman Ricky Lee was retained on the Panthers’ 53-man roster. The Carolina Panthers released former North Carolina A&T defensive back Mac McCain.

The Walter Payton Award is annually given to the most outstanding offensive player in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). Howard is on the watch list because of his impressive season with Alcorn State University.

Last year, Howard rushed for 1,273 yards and scored 12 touchdowns on 253 attempts. He ranked 11th in FCS in rushing yards and rushed a career high of 299 yards against the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff. His performance led him to be named the 2022 SWAC Newcomer of the Year and SWAC First-Team Offense. Howard is expected to make big plays for Alcorn State again as he was selected for the 2023 SWAC Preseason First-Team Offense.

Howard has the opportunity to make history as the second HBCU player to win the award since NFL Legend and fellow Alcorn State alum Steve McNair in 1994. He also has the chance to become the first running back to win the award since 2003.

Jarveon Howard joins North Carolina Central University quarterback, Davius Richard, as the only HBCU players to be selected to the Walter Payton Award Preseason Watch List. Both players will compete to win the award that honors Pro Football Hall Famer and Black College Football Hall of Famer, Walter Payton.
