Travis Scott delivered a high-octane performance at Coachella on April 12, 2025, marking one of the festival’s most anticipated moments. Joining him during his set were two iconic HBCU Bands, The Marching 100 from Florida A&M and the Sonic Boom of the South from Jackson State.

Taking the stage late Saturday night, the Houston rapper transformed the desert into his own Astroworld, complete with elaborate visuals, a towering stage setup, and a mosh-pit-ready crowd. Opening with “HYAENA” from his Utopia album, Scott wasted no time sending his fans into a frenzy.

The Marching 100 and Sonic Boom of the South performed an original arrangement of Travis Scott’s “4X4” for his Coachella intro. The record features a sample from Tennessee State University and the Aristocrat of Bands, and features The Marching Storm from Prairie View A&M in the music video. Both FAMU and Jackson State responded to Scott’s open invitation in February for an HBCU band to perform a horn arrangement for Coachella.

It was quite the day for the Marching 100, our Vaughn Wilson reports that the other half of the band was at Bragg Stadium on campus Saturday night performing with line dance king “Cupid.”

Back in the desert Scott blended fan favorites like “SICKO MODE,” “goosebumps,” and “Antidote” with newer tracks, including unreleased snippets that sent fans into a frenzy. Pyrotechnics, fire bursts, and surreal lighting elevated the experience, while guest appearances—rumored to include Don Toliver and Playboi Carti—added to the hype.

Scott also paid homage to the late Virgil Abloh with a heartfelt shoutout and visuals honoring the iconic designer. The crowd, a sea of phones and raging fans, stayed locked in for the entire set, proving his grip on festival culture is as strong as ever.

A pair of offensive linemen have decided to make Jackson State football their home after a stint at Tennessee State. Alex Valbuena and Ace Meadows both announced on social media on Monday that they were committing to JSU.

Alex Valbuena, a 6-foot, 275-pound offensive lineman from Antioch, Tennessee, has been a dedicated member of the Tennessee State University (TSU) Tigers football team. After redshirting his freshman year in 2022, Valbuena played as a redshirt freshman in 2023 and continued as a redshirt sophomore in 2024. Throughout his tenure, he has worn jersey number 51 and primarily played the guard position. Notably, Valbuena started in the game against Southeast Missouri State on November 23, 2024. Prior to his collegiate career, he attended Lipscomb Academy in Nashville, where he earned first-team all-conference and all-state honors.

300 pound plus commitment for Jackson State

Ace Meadows, a 6-foot-7, 310-pound offensive lineman from Trenton, Tennessee, began his football journey at Peabody High School. There, he distinguished himself as a top offensive lineman recruit, earning recognition on the All-West Tennessee high school football team in 2023. In December 2023, Meadows committed to TSU, influenced by the leadership of head coach Eddie George, whom he described as “one of the most humble men I’ve ever met.” Meadows entered TSU as a freshman in 2024.

In the 2024 season, the Tennessee State Tigers’ offense demonstrated a balanced approach, averaging 190.0 rushing yards and 165.5 passing yards per game, culminating in an average of 355.5 total yards per game. The team scored 28 touchdowns—17 rushing and 10 passing—contributing to a total of 220 points for the season.

Eddie George left Tennessee State at the end of the 2024 season to take the head coaching job at Bowling Green. Jackson State won the 2024 HBCU National Championship with a victory over South Carolina State.

Jackson State’s spring game shifted indoors Saturday due to weather concerns, but the change of venue didn’t affect the team’s intensity. Originally scheduled for Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium, the scrimmage took place at the Walter Payton Center.

“All you’ve got to do is spot the ball with this team,” said head coach T.C. Taylor. “They’ll get after it anywhere.”

JSU, coming off a 2024 Celebration Bowl championship, are already focused on the 2025 season, which opens at home against Hampton on August 30. Senior quarterback Jacobian Morgan, who passed for 2,236 yards and 21 touchdowns last season, led first-team reps during the scrimmage. Though Morgan is the likely starter, competition remains with returners Cam’Ron McCoy, Parker Stofa, Ethan Terrell, and transfer Tyreke Starks. Taylor said another quarterback will transfer in this summer.

Replacing standout running back Irv Mulligan (1,245 yards, 13 TDs) won’t be easy, but Jackson State has depth. 2024 SWAC Freshman of the Year Travis Terrell Jr. took most of the first-team reps. He posted over 1,400 all-purpose yards last season. Emari Matthews and Nate Blount IV are also expected to contribute, as Taylor mentioned six to seven backs are in the mix.

Defensively, JSU returns key pieces like lineman Jeremiah Williams and linebacker Reid Pulliam. The unit ranked among the SWAC’s best in 2024, forcing 24 turnovers and recording 37 sacks. Transfers Khamauri Rogers (Mississippi State) and Carmelo Jones (Baylor) add to an already strong defense.

“We’re catching on fast,” Williams said. “We get better every day.”

The post Shedeur Sanders says Jackson State prepared him for NFL rebuild appeared first on HBCU Gameday.

Later this month, former Jackson State quarterback Shedeur Sanders will hear his name called at the NFL Draft.

The Colorado football star was asked recently how he felt about going to a losing NFL franchise. And he was candid as usual.

“I don’t think Jackson State or Colorado had a winning history before I got there,” Sanders told the media. “It’s just another day in the office, another year in the office for me. It’s the same thing over and over and that’s what I enjoy about it. Because I understand how to approach different situations and what to do different.”

While anyone who knows anything about HBCU football in particular and college football in general knows that Jackson State’s program DOES have a long-term winning history, it’s recent history prior his arrival with his father Deion Sanders wasn’t very good. JSU had a 15-19 record in the four seasons prior to Shedeur Sanders becoming its star quarterback. Sanders took over the team as starting quarterback upon arrival and led JSU to a 23-3 record with back-to-back SWAC titles in 2021 and 2022.

Sanders, of course, then left Jackson State to join his father at Colorado. He turned around another proud college program that had an even worse record over its preceding four seasons, going 15-33 before Sanders showed up. Colorado went 13-12 as Shedeur Sanders played even better at the highest level of college football than he had at an HBCU.

Records aside, Sanders’ focus is getting prepared for his professional career as he looks to be one of the top players taken in the NFL Draft.

“I’m just thankful for the opportunity and whoever drafts me — whatever pick — it truly don’t matter to me. Because I know in myself who I am and I know what I bring to the table,” Sanders said. “So whoever sees the value in that will be very lucky to get me.”

Jackson State defensive back Robert McDaniel has caught the attention of multiple NFL teams ahead of the 2025 NFL Draft, with the New Orleans Saints and Arizona Cardinals emerging as two of the most interested parties.

McDaniel met with both teams during the HBCU Combine and the HBCU Legacy Bowl, where he showcased his versatility and athleticism. He confirmed these meetings in an interview with Justin Melo of The Draft Network.

“I met with more than 16 teams,” McDaniel told Melo. “I had great meetings with the Ravens, Packers, Saints, Commanders, and Cardinals. Those are some of the teams that come to mind.”

McDaniel impressed scouts at the HBCU Combine, posting a 4.55-second 40-yard dash, a 38.5-inch vertical jump, and a 10-foot-8 broad jump. His production on the field has been equally impressive. After beginning his career at Alcorn State, he transferred to Jackson State, where he delivered his best season in 2024. McDaniel recorded 48 total tackles (30 solo, 18 assisted), 4 pass breakups, 3.5 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, and 3 interceptions.

Saints and Cardinals Eyeing McDaniel’s Versatility

The Saints have an immediate need at cornerback and could use depth at safety in the future, making McDaniel a potential value pick in the later rounds. Meanwhile, the Cardinals, who currently hold six picks in the draft but do not have a sixth-round selection, are also intrigued by McDaniel’s ability to play multiple positions in the defensive backfield.

“Honestly, just playing different positions helped me,” McDaniel told HBCU Legends when discussing his versatility. “Knowing the defense, knowing where I should fit, and being able to play corner, nickel, or safety. It shows how versatile I am. I’m a very fast learner, and that’s one of my strengths.”

Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon and defensive coordinator Nick Rallis value versatility in the secondary, which aligns with McDaniel’s ability to adapt to multiple roles. Though Arizona’s starting defensive backfield is largely set, adding depth with a player like McDaniel could be a smart move in a league that increasingly values defensive flexibility.

McDaniel Projects as a Late-Round NFL Pick or Priority Free Agent

Robert McDaniel is currently projected as a mid-to-late Day three NFL Draft pick or a priority undrafted free agent. Both the Saints and Cardinals could benefit from adding a versatile, high-upside prospect who has shown steady improvement throughout his collegiate career. Whether he hears his name called late in the draft or signs as an undrafted free agent, McDaniel’s ability to adapt and contribute across the secondary makes him a player to watch.

Apple TV+’s Severance wrapped up its Season 2 finale with an unforgettable tribute to HBCU marching band culture. Jackson State University alumnus Tramell Tillman (’08) delivered a performance that had viewers buzzing and comparing the moment to Beyoncé’s HBCU-inspired Coachella performance.

“I graduated from Jackson State University, and their band is the Sonic Boom of The South, the best marching band in the entire world,” Tillman told TV Guide. “This is an opportunity to highlight my culture, to highlight the significance of HBCUs — the marching bands, the showmanship, the pageantry, the discipline, the excellence, the Black joy.”

Tillman’s passion for authenticity was evident in his dedication to making the scene as true to HBCU culture as possible. “I’m a perfectionist. I kind of grind, because I want to get it pristine,” he said during Severance’s PaleyFest panel in Los Angeles. “I picked up on it very, very quickly.”

HBCU Jackson State Severance
HBCU inspiration

The inspiration came from years of watching bands like Jackson State University’s Sonic Boom of The South, Bethune-Cookman, and Florida A&M. “I was in the marching band in high school. It is different from HBCU. But because I went to Jackson State University, I had the Sonic Boom of the South. Spent so much time watching them. I had to go back and look at the tapes,” Tillman told Us Weekly. “I was watching Bethune-Cookman and Florida A&M to get inspiration, and I hope I did them justice.”

Tillman’s journey to Jackson State University began after transferring from Xavier University of Louisiana following Hurricane Katrina. He switched his major to mass communication and graduated summa cum laude in 2008. His time at JSU, surrounded by the excellence of the Sonic Boom of the South, became the foundation for the sequence featured in Severance’s finale.

“These are stories that I dealt with myself being in corporate America or just being Black. So I wanted to bring credence to it and be very cautious of how we did it. It was a risk, and I’m glad that we had the license to be free and explore and let it be authentic,” he told Us Weekly.

The performance was more than a scene; it was a declaration of HBCU culture’s excellence. As Tillman continues his acting journey. He remains committed to uplifting his roots and honoring the legacy of institutions like Jackson State University.

CLEVELAND, Ohio | Jackson State University Vice President and Director of Athletics Ashley Robinson has been selected as a NACDA AD of the Year (ADOY) by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA). This is the second NACDA AD of the Year award for the veteran HBCU AD.

In his seventh year, Robinson was announced as one of the 28 winners of the NACDA AD of the Year Award that spans seven divisions (NCAA FBS, FCS, Division I-AAA, II, III, NAIA/Other Four-Year Institutions and Junior College/Community Colleges). Winners will be recognized in conjunction with the 60th Annual NACDA & Affiliates Convention at the World Center Marriott Resort in Orlando, Fla., at the beginning of the Association-Wide Featured Session on Tuesday, June 10, starting at 4 p.m. The ADOY Award highlights the efforts of athletics directors at all levels for their commitment and positive contributions to student-athletes, campuses, and their surrounding communities.

“Ashley Robinson’s recognition as a NACDA Athletics Director of the Year reflects his leadership, dedication, and lasting impact on Jackson State University,” said Jackson State University President Marcus L. Thompson, Ph.D. “With more than 20 championships, he has set Thee Standard in collegiate athletics, achieving historic milestones and expanding opportunities for student-athletes. His leadership has brought JSU back to the national stage, building on its athletic prowess. More than a championship-winning athletics director, he is truly a force of nature in collegiate sports, elevating JSU Athletics and inspiring future generations.”

Thriving in Jackson

The Tigers have thrived in the 2024 calendar year, with the football program winning its third SWAC championship in four years and winning its first Celebration Bowl in December to capture the 2024 HBCU National Championship under head coach T.C. Taylor. The Tigers also finished second in the regular season and tournament in volleyball while having 34 student-athletes receiving weekly awards from the conference and 94 honored with All-Conference or All-America honors. During the spring, the Tigers also won conference championships in women’s tennis and women’s basketball, giving the department 28 championships under the leadership of Robinson.

The department also graduated 21 student-athletes in the Fall of 2024, with the department finishing with a 3.233 term grade point average. The department had eight teams finish with a 3.0 or higher GPA, 10 teams finish with a 3.0 or higher cum GPA, 201 student-athletes with a 3.0 or higher, and 34 student-athletes finish with a 4.0 GPA.

Robinson was selected to serve on the NCAA Men’s Basketball Rules Committee, and has several of his leadership team serving on national committees and boards including Malone Silver (NCAA Division I Legislative Committee), Alyse Wells-Kilbert (NCAA Women’s Basketball Rules Committee), and Travis Jarome (CSC Board of Directors). Taylor is also serving on the NCAA Division I Football Rules Committee, while Amber Pack (Learfield Edge Academy) and KaVaughnya Glass (NAATSO Mentorship Program) have been selected for professional development under Robinson’s leadership.

An acknowledged leader

He was named the National Athletics Director of the Year by HBCU Legends AD of the Year and Light On College Sports HBCU AD of the Year. In May 2024, he received the Roscoe Nance Lifetime Achievement Award from the SWAC Alumni Association. He also was named the 2024 YG&E Leader of the Year at the Young, Gifted, and Empowered Awards show in April and was named a 50 under 50 recipient by Mississippi’s Top Urban Elite Professionals.

The award is the second that Robinson has received from NACDA.

“NACDA is proud to usher in a new class of Athletics Director of the Year Award winners for 2024-25 and recognize these servant leaders guiding their departments into a new age of intercollegiate athletics,” said Pat Manak, NACDA chief executive officer. “Each of the seven Divisions has at least one first-time honoree, including four brand new winners in the junior college ranks. These 28 individuals represent their institutions, conferences, and the industry as a whole with a level of dedication and passion that shines through in their collective accomplishments.”

The ADOY Award program is in its 27th year and has recognized a total of 605 deserving athletics directors to date.

McClain shared a heartfelt statement on X, formerly known as Twitter, thanking the Tigers coaching staff, his teammates and the university.

“…I want to express my sincere gratitude to the coaching staff, the athletic trainers, academic support and my teammates at Texas Southern University for their unwavering support throughout my time here,” the statement read. “The experiences and relationships I’ve built during my time at TSU will always hold a special place in my heart. …Thank you, Texas Southern University, for everything. McClain departs Texas Southern with one year of eligibility remaining in his college basketball career. The Memphis, Tenn., native led TSU in scoring, averaging 13.6 points, 4.3 assists, 3.1 rebounds while shooting 37.9% from the floor and 37.3% from three point range in 31 games during the 2024-25 season.

The second-team All-SWAC selection brought his talents to the Houston-based HBCU after spending one year at Abilene Christian and three seasons in the junior college ranks. Tigers head coach Johnny Jones acquired McClain to fill the void in the departure of former Tigers’ star and All-SWAC performer PJ Henry.

Texas Southern (15-17, 12-6) finished the 2024-25 season tied for fourth in the Southwestern Athletic Conference standings and earned the No. 4 seed in the SWAC tournament. However, eventual SWAC champion Alabama State defeated TSU 84-79 on Thursday in the quarterfinals of the conference tournament.

When Jackson State tips off against Bethune-Cookman on Friday night at the SWAC Tournament in Atlanta both HBCU schools will feature coaches who were once NBA All-Stars. JSU is the No. 2 seed in the tournament and its coached by Mo Williams, who made the NBA All-Star team in 2009 while playing for the Cleveland Cavaliers. On the opposing bench for the No. 3 seed Bethune-Cookman is Reggie Theus, an NBA All-Star in 1981 with the Chicago Bulls, and in 1983 with the Kansas City Kings.

Williams and Theus make up two of the 19 head coaches in Division One basketball who once played in the NBA. Both coaches are one win away from appearing in the SWAC Championship game after impressive regular season efforts. The two are the only former NBA players who are Division I HBCU basketball head coaches.

Mo Williams led JSU to a 14-4 record in the SWAC this season including two wins over Bethune-Cookman. Reggie Theus has improved Bethune-Cookman’s conference record in each of his four seasons at the helm in Daytona Beach. Bethune-Cookman finished just behind the Tigers with a 13-5 conference record.

Both teams are the two hottest teams in the SWAC heading into Friday’s game. Jackson State is riding a seven-game winning streak, while BCU has won six in a row.

The Tigers are led by former McDonald’s All-American Daeshun Ruffin, a transfer from Ole Miss. The junior guard averages 15.6 points per game, fourth in the SWAC. The inside is bolstered by All-SWAC second team selection Shannon Grant. The FAMU transfer averages 11 points and 5.6 rebounds per game.

For Bethune-Cookman the offense runs through All-SWAC first team selection Trey Thomas. The Hampton transfer has scored 525 total points this season, the most of any player, and his scoring average is third at 16.4 points per game.

Thomas struggled from the field in BCU’s opening game against Alcorn State but his teammates filled the void throughout the game. Brayon Freeman led the Wildcats in scoring off the bench on Thursday scoring 19 off the bench in the 69-60 win over Alcorn State.

Jackson State won its opening-round game against Florida A&M, 91-76. Friday’s game will be broadcast on ESPN+ at 8:30 pm EST.

The route for HBCU and other non-Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) college football players seeking to achieve their NFL dreams could become even harder in the future due to the impact of the transfer portal and lack of access to the annual NFL combine, according to a recent ESPN report.

Some of the greatest NFL players like Walter Payton, Jerry Rice, Aeneas Williams, Shannon Sharpe and Michael Strahan played at HBCUs – today’s Football Championship Subdivision level programs – before dominating at the NFL level. However, when the Pro Football Hall of Famers played in college, they didn’t have access to name, image and likeness nor were they forced to deal with the impact of the transfer portal.

Only seven (FCS) players were invited to the 2025 NFL Combine nearly a week ago in Indianapolis. With the seismic changes to the transfer portal that took place ahead of the 2021 college football season, along with last year’s amendment to the transfer rule of allowing programs unlimited players to transfer without penalties (barring they met academic obligations), it has resulted in fewer FCS players receiving an invite to the NFL’s weeklong showcase at Lucas Oil Stadium due to the perception of more NFL-ready talent at the FBS ranks.

NFL red flags for non-transfers?

Zach McKinnell, editor and owner of FCS Football Central, reported Tuesday on X (formerly known as Twitter) that multiple scouts from professional football teams who attended the Senior Bowl and HBCU Legacy Bowl revealed that FCS prospects who choose to remain at the FCS level instead of darting for FBS programs are labeled as “potential red flags” at the next level.

“Were they scared of better competition, are they not good enough to play at that level?” McKinnell tweeted.

ESPN’s Kalyn Kahler reported that an average of 20.5 players from smaller non-FBS programs received invites to the combine between 2016 to 2021, prior to changes to the transfer portal. However, the mean number of players has dropped to 14.5 since 2022, the lowest mark in the last decade.

Even more, no players from the Division II or the Division III ranks earned invites to the last two combines. But prior to changes to the transfer rule, an average of 3.5 sub-FCS players earned combine invites from 2015 to 2021, per the report.

The report also indicated that 126 of the 330 players who received invites to the combine transferred at some level of college football at least once, with many of the players taking their talents to programs on the same level. Additionally, 28 of those 330 have transferred no less than once from a non-FBS program. Compare that to the 2018 combine, an event where only two players among 336 invited players transferred to a higher-level college football program – meaning NAIA to D-II or FCS to FBS – after playing at a non-FBS program.

Some of the higher-profile HBCU prospects hoping to hear their names called in this year’s NFL draft include Alabama A&M’s Carson Vinson and Donovan Eaglin, Jackson State’s Irv Mulligan and Robert McDaniel, Florida A&M’s Kendall Bohler, Howard’s Jarrett Hunter, Virginia Union’s Jada Byers, Hampton’s Elijah Burris, South Carolina State’s Aaron Smith and Alabama State’s James Burgess, to name a few.

The 2025 NFL draft will take place April 24-26 at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

It’s been nearly a decade since Mo Williams cemented his legacy as an NBA champion with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2016. Fast forward to today and Williams has built Jackson State University, a Mississippi HBCU, into a contender for this year’s Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Championship.

Under the leadership of Williams, in his third season, the Jackson State Tigers hold an overall record of 12-17, with a strong 12-4 mark in SWAC play, good enough for second place in the conference standings with two regular season games remaining. If JSU wins at least one of its next two games it will be the best conference record to date for Williams during his time in Jackson. In his first year during the 2022-23 season, the Tigers finished 12-6 in conference play.

Offensively, Jackson State averages 70.7 points per game, with a field goal percentage of 40.8% and a three-point shooting accuracy of 31.4%. Defensively, they allow an average of 76.6 points per game, with opponents shooting 44.7% from the field. The Tigers have shown proficiency from the free-throw line, maintaining a 73.2% conversion rate.

The season started off with a horrendous beginning, losing 14 straight non-conference games, but the Tigers found their footing in January. Once SWAC play began, the Tigers won 12 of their next 16 games against HBCU competition. Daeshun Ruffin, a 5’11” point guard has led the way in scoring for the Tigers pumping in 15 points per game for Jackson State.

JSU trails Southern in the standings, the Tigers lost to the Jaguars by two points in their sole matchup this season. In that game Ruffin hit a three-pointer with eight seconds to play to send the game into overtime, but Southern held on for the 91-89 win.

Mo Williams and his team control their own destiny in regard to the No. 2 seed in next week’s SWAC Tournament in Atlanta. Holding on to that spot would give JSU a first-round bye while they would await the winner of the No. 8 vs No. 9 matchup. If the tournament started today that would be a matchup of Alabama A&M and Grambling. The Tigers won by double digits against both of those schools.

A steady point guard during his 13-year NBA career, Williams returned to Cleveland for the 2015-16 season, providing leadership and depth behind Kyrie Irving. Though injuries limited his playing time, his experience proved invaluable during the Cavaliers’ historic comeback from a 3-1 deficit in the NBA Finals against the Golden State Warriors. Williams’ contributions helped Cleveland secure its first-ever championship. After 13 seasons in the league, including an All-Star selection in 2009, he retired as a champion, later transitioning into coaching where he found a home in HBCU basketball. Williams coached briefly at Alabama State before taking the job at Jackson State.

Heisman Trophy winner and future top NFL Draft pick Travis Hunter continues to speak highly about his stint at HBCU Jackson State University.

The Colorado defensive back/wide receiver stopped into Louisville, KY to pick up the inaugural “Emerging G.O.A.T. Award” at View Pointe Hall in the Muhammad Ali Center. He was asked about his transition with Deion Sanders and Co. from Jackson State to Colorado, and he was very candid in his commentary.

“I’ve been with Coach Prime the whole time, so It wasn’t that much of a difference going from Jackson State to Colorado,” Hunter said. “One thing I’ll say — you have to have confidence in what you’re doing and where you are at. At an HBCU, we had so much confidence.”

Travis Hunter spent one season at Jackson State following his shocking decision to flip from Florida State to the HBCU during signing day 2021. He battled injuries in his lone season with the SWAC squad, but was a key part of the team’s run to a 12-0 regular season and a SWAC title that year before following Sanders to Colorado.

“That’s probably one of the best times of my life because as I was playing football— I was growing as a person,” Hunter continued. “I got so many brothers that went to an HBCU now. So that team right there, I feel like that’s the best time I had in college because we had a lot of fun. We enjoyed being at an HBCU, we enjoyed being inside of our skin.”

Hunter’s final game in a Jackson State uniform came in the Celebration Bowl, where he showcased the dynamic two-way skills that the rest of the college football world would soon become acquainted with. He caught a touchdown pass from Shedeur Sanders that tied the game on the last play of regulation before North Carolina Central ultimately came away with a six-point victory.

Shedeur Sanders has never lacked confidence, and at the NFL Combine, he made it clear that he believes his track record as both an HBCU and Power Four quarterback speaks for itself. The former Jackson State and Colorado quarterback sees himself as a franchise-changing leader, capable of elevating an NFL team just as he did in college.

“We went from Jackson State to Colorado and changed two programs back-to-back,” Sanders said. “You don’t think I could come to an NFL franchise and change a program again? It’s history, it’s always going to repeat itself.”

Sanders, who posted impressive numbers despite facing constant pressure behind Colorado’s struggling offensive line in 2023, emphasized that his success is driven by his mentality. He believes his leadership and ability to connect with teammates set him apart from other quarterbacks in the draft.

During his time at Jackson State Sanders was clearly the top quarterback in all of HBCU football. Critics questioned if that would translate to Colorado when he transferred for the 2023 season. The critics were quickly silenced. Sanders talked about some of his traits that carried over from his HBCU experience into his time in Boulder.

“I would say being a leader, that’s my best trait overall, because everything is mental,” he explained. “So, if I play my game from the neck up, I got to be able to adjust to my players, to have them have relatability for them to get to know me, for us to make everything smooth. I came from an HBCU and then went (to a Power Four conference), those two types of different players, and it’s very diverse, and getting to know people, talk to people and making everything genuine.”

With his father, NFL legend Deion Sanders, as his coach at both Jackson State and Colorado, Shedeur has been under the microscope since high school. He understands the scrutiny but insists that his performance on the field should silence doubters.

“When people say I’m not one of the top quarterbacks or the top quarterback, what are y’all going based off of?” Sanders asked. “Because I did it year after year after year, and you see the progression. Obviously, it has to be some kind of external hate that you have for the family, for the last name, for anything, because I know I’ve proven myself on the field.”

Sanders also emphasized the importance of mental toughness, citing Tom Brady as an example of how intelligence and decision-making lead to long-term success.

“It’s extremely important to keep your mental in the best place because that’s where my game is played,” he said. “My game is not played from my legs and not even just my arm. So I know longevity, the all-time greats. What’s Tom Brady’s best trait? His mental. He’s able to think. So if you have those traits of greatness and I know where I’m heading, then why wouldn’t a franchise pick me? You’ve got the ultimate cheat code.”

Beyond his physical skills, Sanders is eager to show teams the person behind the player.

“That’s why when I’m here interacting with people, I love interacting with people so they can truly get to know me and not just know clicks or anything like that.”

With his confidence, leadership, and track record of success, Sanders is out to prove that he belongs among the elite quarterbacks in the 2024 NFL Draft. Whether teams buy into his vision remains to be seen, but one thing is certain—he’s betting on himself.

Travis Hunter has never been one to shy away from a challenge. The former HBCU star at Jackson State before transferring to Colorado, is known for his rare ability to excel on both sides of the ball. He made it clear at the NFL Combine this week that he’s determined to continue playing both offense and defense in the NFL

“They say nobody has ever done it the way I do it,” Hunter, 21, declared before a thick pack of media. “But I tell them I’m just different. I’m a different person.”

Hunter’s versatility has been one of the most talked-about storylines leading up to the NFL Draft. At Colorado, he thrived as both a lockdown cornerback and a dynamic wide receiver, often playing over 100 snaps per game. While playing both positions full-time in the NFL is nearly unheard of, Hunter believes he has the skillset and stamina to make it work.

“I’ve got my own unique case that I can play both sides of the ball,” he said. “Not that many people in the NFL have done it.”

Historically, only a few players—most notably Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, who coached Hunter at Jackson State and Colorado—have had any level of success playing both ways in the NFL. But Hunter wants to take it a step further, proving he can be a true two-way player over the course of an entire season.

“Yeah, I would hope for them to go out there and let me earn the other position,” he added. “But that’s up to them, not me.”

With the draft approaching, teams will have to decide whether they see Hunter as a two-way unicorn or if they’ll make him specialize. One thing is certain—he’s ready to prove he’s built differently.

Travis Hunter is the first Heisman Trophy winner to ever play at an HBCU, when he flipped his commitment to Jackson State in 2022. Hunter came to Jackson State as the first five-star high school prospect to sign with an FCS football program since ESPN began college football rankings in 2006.

Now he's looking to show NFL scouts he can do it at the next level.

Jackson State running back Irv Mulligan accomplished a lot in his two seasons as an HBCU player — but now he’s looking to show NFL scouts even more.

Mulligan showed up to the HBCU combine in New Orleans on Monday and made his presence felt in a number of ways.

The reigning SWAC player of the year ran a solid 4.58 40 yard dash, showcasing the speed that saw him run through and past defenders at Jackson State, breaking the single-season record of one Walter Payton.

“It’s not just the big schools like the Alabamas, Clemson… HBCU guys can ball as well,” Mulligan told Steve Wyche of the NFL Network at the combine. “ I came out here not to just perform for myself, and put on for all the HBCU guys. And perform for them and give them confidence as well. It’s a lot of guys that wish they cold be here today and they wasn’t so I had to put on for them and show out.”

Mulligan’s running ability has never been in question. He ran for a total of 3,244 yards in his career, which began at Wofford. But showing that he can catch the ball was a big objective for the 5’10, 205 pound back.

Irv Mulligan, Jackson State, HBCU Gameday

“I showed that — for one — I’m a dominant guy in the run game,” Mulligan said. “I showed similar traits as some of the guys in the league now like Alvin Kamara, Dalvin Cook, things of that nature. I showed them that I could be an all-around back — especially today. They didn’t see me get in the passing game a lot during the season but today I really showcased that.”

Irv Mulligan said he saw his pass catching was questioned coming into the NFL draft period after catching just 13 passes in his career.

“I’ll be honest — that was one of my weaknesses on my scouting report,” Mulligan said. “I wanted to come out here and show that I can really catch the ball, I can catch just as good as a wide receiver. If they wanted to put me in the slot — I can play slot wide receiver. I’m a versatile guy and I wanted to show that I’m an all-around back.”

Moving forward as he progresses to practices for the HBCU Legacy Bowl, Mulligan says he’s intent on showing other skills besides running. Namely — blocking.

“The main thing for me is I want to show that I can also protect the quarterback. When the linebackers come, when we do one-on-one blocking, I’m going to show them that just like I caught every ball today, I’m going to block every linebacker in practice. “

It’s hard to bet against the man that broke Walter Payton’s record.

Angel Jackson has made history by becoming the first HBCU basketball player to join Athletes Unlimited, a professional women’s basketball league. This milestone not only highlights her exceptional talent but also underscores the increasing recognition of athletes from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) in professional sports.

Collegiate Career at Jackson State University

Jackson began her collegiate journey at the University of Southern California (USC), where she played for three seasons before transferring to Jackson State University (JSU). At JSU, she made an immediate impact, earning back-to-back Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2023 and 2024. During her senior year, Jackson averaged 10 points, 6.8 rebounds, and led the conference with 2.9 blocks per game. Her defensive prowess and leadership were instrumental in guiding the JSU Tigers to consecutive SWAC tournament championships and appearances in the NCAA Women’s Tournament.

Journey in the WNBA

In the 2024 WNBA Draft, Jackson was selected 36th overall by the Las Vegas Aces, becoming the second JSU women’s basketball player to be drafted into the league. However, her tenure with the Aces was short-lived, as she was waived by the team in May 2024. Undeterred, Jackson continued to pursue her professional career, leading to her historic signing with Athletes Unlimited.

Paving the Way in Athletes Unlimited

Joining Athletes Unlimited for the 2025 season, Angel Jackson is set to showcase her skills from February 5 to March 2 in Nashville, Tennessee. Her participation marks a significant milestone, as she is the first player from an HBCU to compete in the league’s four-season history. Jackson views this opportunity as a platform to inspire other athletes from HBCUs, stating, “I hope my journey encourages others to pursue their dreams, regardless of the challenges they may face,” She told Mia Berry of Andscape in a recent interview.

“I’ve been keeping up with AU for the past couple of years. I’ve been seeing the best of the best compete at AU, so it’s been a great experience just to know that I‘m going to be a part of it this year,” Jackson said. “I’m really ready to get after it and really just [show] my talents a little bit more.”

“I want more HBCU players to be drafted because we really have some real dogs in HBCU conferences,” she said. “So hopefully I could be one that just shines the light [and] just puts the light back on HBCUs, not just for Jackson State but other HBCUs … making sure that everybody has the same opportunity.”

HBCU national champion Jackson State has a coaching hole to fill as linebacker coach Chris Orr heads to the NFL.

Orr, a former NFL player himself, is joining the Kansas City Chiefs. The move was first reported by Matt Zenitz of 247Sports. He is expected to join the staff as a quality control coach.

Orr spent one season at Jackson State, joining head coach T.C. Taylor’s staff in May 2024. Jackson State went 11-2 last season, winning the SWAC title and claiming the HBCU national title after a win in the Celebration Bowl. The JSU defense was stellar, allowing 17 points per game and holding opposing rushing attacks to just 3.4 yards per carry.

Chris Orr is the brother of Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Zach Orr. His family has deep football roots, and Chris is now taking the next step in his coaching journey with one of the NFL’s most successful franchises. Working under Andy Reid’s staff in Kansas City presents a major opportunity for the young coach to grow and develop at the professional level.

Chris Orr, Jackson State, HBCU

His transition from HBCU coaching to the NFL highlights the league’s increasing recognition of the coaching talent within Black college football. Jackson State, in particular, has been a stepping stone for former players and coaches to advance to the NFL. Orr’s move reinforces the importance of HBCU programs as a proving ground for talent beyond the playing field.

Now with the reigning AFC champions, Orr will have the chance to apply his knowledge and experience on a larger stage. His brief time at Jackson State helped prepare him for this opportunity, and his move to the NFL is yet another example of the impact HBCU programs continue to have on football’s highest level.

Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter recently did the media rounds at the Super Bowl, and the topic of his time at HBCU Jackson State came up.

During an interview with Cam Newton, the former Colorado two-way star was asked about his decision to go to Jackson State out of high school in 2021.

Hunter: “So I’m looking at it from that standpoint like, bro, if I go here I open up more doors. My name is always gon’ be there. He went to an HBCU first. So I definitely wanted to open up those doors.”

Newton: Does Jackson State get to say that a Heisman Trophy-winner to Jackson State?

Hunter: Definitely. You know, that’s where I started off at. I wasn’t in college yet. I had to go to college and find out. I went to Jackson State.

Hunter shocked the football world when he spurned Florida State as the no. 2 prospect in his class to join Deion Sanders at Jackson State.

The former No. 1 recruit made an immediate impact under Deion Sanders, helping JSU to a SWAC championship and an undefeated regular season. Defensively, he recorded two interceptions and ten pass breakups, while offensively, he added crucial receptions, including a touchdown to force overtime in the Celebration Bowl. Despite missing time due to injury, Hunter’s playmaking ability was undeniable. His performance solidified his status as a future star before transferring to Colorado to continue his career at the Power Five level.

When he won the Heisman Trophy last year, Hunter made sure to mention his time at the HBCU.

“This is an exciting time at Jackson State,” Robinson said. “We are bringing back one of our winningest programs back, and not only bringing both back, but we are bringing them back with an alum leading the way. We are excited to have Robert (Ford), a two-time Jackson State graduate, lead the way and build this program.”

Ford returns to Jackson State where he earned his degree in Health & Physical Education with a minor in Mass Communications. He also finished with a Master’s in Sports Science.

He comes to Jackson State University after a stint as the head coach of the golf programs at Andrew College (Cuthbert, Ga.) for the last year where he oversaw and managed all aspects of the team, while also developing and implementing training programs to enhance the skills of the athletes. Prior to his stop at Andrew College, Ford served as the assistant coach at Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) member, Prairie View A&M. He also served as the second assistant golf professional at Annadale Golf Club in Madison (Miss.) where he provided lessons and clinics to golfers of all skill levels.

Ford looks to revitalize the HBCU golf programs that have been dormant since 2017. Prior to that, the women (started in 1994) won 14 SWAC championships and became the first HBCU to appear in the NCAA Tournament. Meanwhile, the men won 25 SWAC titles, including 23 straight from 1989 to 2011, and became the first HBCU men’s team to appear in the NCAA Tournament.

Jackson State University football program continues to reload its roster with talent after winning the 2024 Celebration Bowl. Their latest high-profile transfer is former University of Southern California (USC) and San Diego State (SDSU) running back Kenan Christon. Known for his elite speed and versatility, Christon’s decision to join the Tigers is another major win for head coach T.C. Taylor and the reigning HBCU national champions, who have already signed a handful of former FBS talent.

Elite Speed Meets HBCU Excellence

Before making his mark at the collegiate level, Christon was one of the top high school athletes in the country. The San Diego native was a four-star recruit by ESPN and ranked as the No. 30 running back nationally in the 2019 recruiting class. However, his biggest claim to fame was his track speed, where he dominated California’s track and field scene.

At Madison High School, Christon won both the 100m (10.30) and 200m (20.65) titles at the 2019 California State Championships, becoming just the third athlete in history to achieve the sprint double. His track dominance earned him the 2019 Gatorade Boys Track and Field Athlete of the Year for California. On the football field, he racked up over 3,000 rushing yards and 36 touchdowns, making him one of the most dynamic playmakers in his class.

From USC to SDSU to Thee I Love

Christon initially committed to USC, where he showed flashes of brilliance in 2019, rushing for 373 yards and two touchdowns while adding 126 receiving yards and three receiving scores. He also earned Pac-12 Freshman of the Week honors after a 103-yard rushing debut against Arizona.

After limited opportunities at USC, Kenan Christon transferred to San Diego State, where he led the Aztecs with 910 all-purpose yards in 2024. A true dual-threat back and return specialist, Christon was named an All-Mountain West Honorable Mention as a kick returner.

HBCU Jackson State University Kenan Christon
Why Jackson State?

Jackson State is fresh off a dominant 28-7 Celebration Bowl victory over South Carolina State and is reloading for a run at back-to-back Celebration Bowl championships. Coach T.C. Taylor has made it clear that the Tigers will continue to attract top-tier talent, and Christon’s arrival only reinforces that message.

What This Means for Jackson State and the SWAC

With Kenan Christon in the backfield, Jackson State University now has a home-run hitter to replace Irv Mulligan, who racked up 1,919 yards and 18 touchdowns in two seasons as the Tiger’s bell-cow running back. Christon’s ability to impact the game as a rusher, receiver, and returner makes him a nightmare for SWAC defenses.

Jackson State is not resting on its Celebration Bowl title—they are reloading for another HBCU championship run. Below is a list of some of Jackson State’s top transfers heading into the 2025 season.

DB Vernorrious Chaney, Macon, MS – Southern Miss

LAS VEGAS – The Las Vegas Raiders and the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) will present the inaugural Las Vegas HBCU Classic between two storied HBCU football programs, Grambling State University and Jackson State University, on October 25, 2025, at Allegiant Stadium.

The landmark event will celebrate the rich legacy and culture of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), showcasing one of college football’s most storied rivalries. The matchup will mark the 73rd all-time meeting between the two Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) programs. Grambling earned a 41-20 victory in the last meeting on September 21, 2024.

“The Las Vegas Raiders and Allegiant Stadium are proud to host the HBCU Classic, celebrating the rich legacy, talent, and culture of Historically Black Colleges and Universities,” said Raiders President Sandra Douglass Morgan. “The Raiders organization has a deep and long-standing connection to HBCU football that dates to the early years of the franchise under Al Davis and includes three Pro Football Hall of Famers from HBCU programs, the first Black quarterback selected in the first round of the NFL Draft, the first Black head coach in modern NFL history, and dozens of outstanding players, coaches, and administrators. We eagerly anticipate the pride and passion of HBCU football visiting Las Vegas in October.”

The first Las Vegas HBCU Classic will extend far beyond the Allegiant Stadium playing field, showcasing two of college football’s most celebrated marching bands: Grambling’s “World Famed” Tiger Marching Band and Jackson State’s internationally renowned “Sonic Boom of the South.”

“We are proud to welcome Grambling and Jackson State to Las Vegas in October for this historic HBCU matchup,” said Steve Hill, president and CEO of the LVCVA. “This game is more than just a competition—it’s a celebration of culture, tradition, and community that resonates far beyond the field. We look forward to showcasing the excitement and hospitality Las Vegas has to offer to the teams, alumni, and fans.”

The contest marks Grambling’s second appearance in the “Sports and Entertainment Capital of the World,” following a 2002 matchup against Tennessee State at Sam Boyd Stadium. Grambling’s “World Famed” Tiger Marching Band also performed at halftime of a Raiders game during the 2021 season. Jackson State returns for its third visit after facing UNLV in 1975 and 2016. Las Vegas last hosted an HBCU football program on September 2, 2017, when Howard University shocked UNLV as a heavy underdog in one of college football’s most stunning upsets.

Presales for tickets and fan experience travel packages will go on sale on March 3, offering attendees exclusive opportunities to take in the game and the best of Las Vegas, and the public on sale will begin on March 7. For information on travel packages and tickets, visit allegiantstadium.com/lvhbcuclassic or @lvhbcuclassic on Instagram and X.

Broadcast details, kickoff time, and credential information will be announced at a later date.

Fresh off a dominant 12-2 season and claiming both the SWAC and HBCU national championships, Jackson State football is adding another milestone to its resurgence under head coach TC Taylor.

The Tigers have officially landed a 2025 matchup against in-state FBS opponent Southern Miss, set for Sept. 6 at Carlisle-Faulkner Field at M.M. Roberts Stadium.

The game, which will mark the fourth meeting between the programs, comes with a significant financial boost for Jackson State. JSU will receive a $375,000 payout for the contest, a meaningful payday against an in-state FBS foe.

Irv Mulligan, Jackson State, HBCU Gameday

For Southern Miss, the addition of Jackson State finalizes its 2025 non-conference schedule and gives first-year head coach Charles Huff seven home games in his debut season. The Golden Eagles will open against Mississippi State (Aug. 30) and also host Jacksonville State (Sept. 27), with a road trip to Louisiana Tech (Sept. 20) rounding out their non-conference slate.

Southern Miss has historically dominated the series, winning all three previous matchups, including a 55-7 rout in the 2018 season opener. But Jackson State enters this meeting with newfound confidence, having established itself as the premier program in Black college football. Under Taylor’s leadership, the Tigers have maintained their status as a SWAC powerhouse and now look to prove they can compete against FBS competition. It will also play on another national stage in October against Grambling State.

With its championship pedigree and a hefty payout in hand, Jackson State will aim to make a statement in Hattiesburg. A win over Southern Miss would not only be historic but also serve as another stepping stone in JSU’s continued push for national recognition beyond the HBCU ranks.

Jackson State and Grambling State, — two of the biggest brands in HBCU football — will soon be meeting in Las Vegas.

The two teams are set to meet on Oct. 25 at Allegiant Stadium, home of the Las Vegas Raiders according to a report by HBCU Sports.

Steve Hill, CEO of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, announced a $350k sponsorship of the game.

“Fifty-five players from the Raiders have come from HBCUs. There are all kinds of alumni in our community,” Hill said via the Las Vegas Sun.“Anybody putting on an event that wants to bring a spotlight to them, when they choose Las Vegas, it is going to elevate that game.”

The two programs are amongst the most storied in HBCU and FCS football. Both have four Pro Football Hall of Famers and have produced hundreds of NFL Draft picks.

However, the two programs are in different places heading into 2025. Grambling State failed to record a winning record for the fifth consecutive season in its first year under head coach Mickey Joseph.

Jackson State, meanwhile, is coming off an impressive 12-2 season under head coach TC Taylor. The program won its third SWAC title in four seasons and claimed the HBCU national title after winning the Celebration Bowl. However, Grambling State did hand Jackson State one of its losses in a non-conference matchup.

Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders is at the Shrine Bowl prepping for the NFL Draft, but he hasn’t forgotten his HBCU roots.

The former Jackson State quarterback was at the Shrine Bowl talking to the press over the weekend when he was asked about his legacy at JSU by Ron Murray Jr.

“HBCUs is definitely my foundation. And I’m excited to be a part of that class, be a part of that group and that community of people,” Sanders said without hesitation. “It’s definitely a truly grateful experience, going there and experiencing that and knowing that’s my foundation and going to a Power Five and experiencing all that also.”

Shedeur Sanders had an impressive stint at Jackson State, making a significant impact both on and off the field. Joining JSU in 2021, Sanders immediately made waves as a freshman by leading the Tigers to an undefeated regular season in the SWAC and capturing the conference title. His debut year concluded with a trip to the Celebration Bowl, though the team fell short of victory in the matchup of HBCU champions.

In his second season, Sanders elevated his game, throwing for 3,720 yards and 40 touchdowns, breaking several school records. His leadership helped Jackson State secure back-to-back SWAC titles and return to the Celebration Bowl, where they again faced a tough loss to North Carolina Central in his final game before heading to Colorado.

“So we went, we changed the culture at Jackson, brought attention to the program and we did everything people didn’t think we was able to do,” Sanders said. “So that’s why I know I’m the most guaranteed risk you can take.”

Jackson State secured a thrilling 103-93 triple-overtime win over Alabama A&M to remain perfect in SWAC play on Monday night in an HBCU thriller.

The Tigers, now 3-0 in the conference for the third consecutive season under head coach Mo Williams, used a balanced effort and clutch execution to outlast their opponent in a game marked by 18 lead changes and 17 ties.

While Alabama A&M’s AC Bryant was sensational with 39 points, 10 rebounds, and six three-pointers, Jackson State countered its HBCU rival with a team-oriented performance. Romelle Mansel led the Tigers with 23 points, adding five rebounds and three blocks to control the paint. Jayme Mitchell Jr. contributed 16 points, including critical baskets in the third overtime, as Jackson State closed the game on a 15-5 run.

The Tigers overcame a poor shooting first half, where they trailed 24-22 after hitting just 30.3 percent of their shots. The Tigers found their rhythm in the second half, outscoring the Bulldogs 45-43 to force overtime. Their bench played a pivotal role, contributing 48 points to keep the team fresh during the grueling 55-minute contest.

Defense was also key for Jackson State, as it forced 19 turnovers and scored 25 points off them. Despite Alabama A&M’s strong rebounding effort, Jackson State capitalized on second-chance opportunities, converting 17 points off offensive boards.

This victory highlights Jackson State’s ability to win under pressure, a quality that has made the HBCU play well down the stretch.

With their depth, defensive intensity, and late-game composure, the Tigers have positioned themselves as a clear contender for the conference title as they continue their strong start to the season.

The post Jackson State football stadium/athletic facility proposal on the table appeared first on HBCU Gameday.

Jackson State football may soon have a new home, thanks to a recently proposed bill in the Mississippi Legislature. Representative Robert L. Johnson III (D-District 94) introduced legislation that would allocate $40 million to build a state-of-the-art multipurpose athletic facility for Jackson State University (JSU). The proposal marks the latest effort to modernize facilities for the storied program while addressing long-standing space needs for the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC).

Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium, the current home of Jackson State football, has hosted the program’s games since 1970. Originally built in 1950, the stadium holds historical significance but has faced calls for replacement in recent years. Its location on North State Street, adjacent to UMMC, has made the property a prime target for redevelopment to support medical facilities. Several prior proposals to demolish the stadium and construct a new one for JSU have stalled.

Jackson State, HBCU Gameday

Representative Johnson’s 2025 proposal could set the long-discussed plans into motion. If passed, construction on a new Jackson State football facility could begin as early as July 1. However, the bill leaves critical questions unanswered, such as the exact location of the new stadium and the fate of the current facility.

Jackson State football has long been a cornerstone of the community, producing NFL legends like Walter Payton and drawing large, passionate crowds. That, coupled with the massive size of the stadium, have made JSU football the perennial leader in FCS attendance. A new stadium would not only enhance the game-day experience for fans but also position the program to continue its legacy of excellence.

With Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium aging and UMMC seeking expansion, the proposal could represent a win-win for both institutions. As the legislature considers the bill, Jackson State football fans are watching closely, with many hopeful for a new chapter in the program’s history.

Deion Sanders made an appearance on Good Morning America on Wednesday to promote his new season of “Coach Prime” and he was asked about his influence on NFL stars coming to HBCU football programs.

The current coach at Colorado was asked by GMA Host Michael Strahan, a Pro Football Hall of Famer who played at Texas Southern, about his influence on Michael Vick and DeSean Jackson who recently took over HBCU programs Norfolk State and Delaware State.

“I feel like I’m blessed to be blessing,” Sanders told his fellow Hall of Famer. “And those guys you just forementioned, I reached out to them and I want them to succeed immensely. All the wrongs, all the rights, everything that I could give them and all of the guidance — I’m there for them. They’re like my little brothers and I love it.”

Deion Sanders, of course, got his first head coaching job at Jackson State. After being hired in 2020 he brought the proud program back to prominence, winning back-to-back SWAC championships in 2021 and 2022 before leaving to take the Colorado job. Sanders says he’s ecstatic that former NFL stars like Jackson and Vick are getting these opportunities.

Deion Sanders led Jackson State to back-to-back SWAC titles.

“I love that they’re getting opportunities,” Sanders said in the interview. “Because we never got these opportunities, we comprised 75-80 percent of the team — but then we can’t coach? That doesn’t make any sense to me. So I’m thankful that we’re getting opportunities.”

Of course, HBCUs have been the ones largely offering these opportunities, often seeking out players like Vick at NSU or Eddie George at Tennessee State to take over their programs. Deion Sanders has experienced this first hand and made sure to acknowledge it in a different segment. Jackson State alumnus Demarco Morgan thanked Sanders for what he did for JSU, and Sanders made sure to show his appreciation to the HBCU where he got his college coaching start.

“They looked out for me,” Sanders told Morgan. “Without Jackson State, it wouldn’t be no Prime. Trust me.”

The City of Jackson will host a parade honoring the Jackson State University Tigers football team for their awe-inspiring HBCU national championship victory in Atlanta, where they defeated South Carolina State 28-7 to win their first Celebration Bowl. The parade, organized in partnership with Jackson State University, kicks off tentatively at 3 p.m. on Friday, January 17, 2025.

The event will feature appearances by Head Coach T.C. Taylor and the national championship-winning Tigers. Taylor is a former JSU quarterback and receiver who set records during his matriculation at the HBCU. The Pike County native wins the Celebration Bowl in his second year, solidifying himself as the first Jackson State coach to snag the history-making title in Atlanta.

“This national championship is for the City of Jackson and won by a Mississippi-grown Jackson State alum. I can’t think of a better way to honor the accomplishments of this team than with a parade in our city. I want to thank the City of Jackson for spearheading this campaign to honor our football program, and I can’t wait until January 17,” said Vice President and Director of Athletics Ashley Robinson.

The Tigers’ Celebration Bowl victory reflects the heart, hustle, and unmatched excellence of JSU. A parade is a means for every fan who cheered from the stands, streamed the games, or repped the blue and white with pride.

Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba said the parade is his response to multiple requests from supporters wanting a tribute to the monumental accomplishment of the JSU Tigers Football Team, who made history by snagging the Celebration Bowl win after their third trip to Atlanta.

“Jackson State’s victory is a win for our entire city. This parade is our way of showing gratitude to the players, coaches, and everyone who contributed to this unforgettable season. We invite everyone to join us in celebrating this historic achievement,” said Lumumba.

Trayvis Hunter, younger brother of Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter, has now received two offers from HBCUs — including Jackson State, where his brother made history.

The younger Hunter announced via X that he received his first offer from Tennessee State University earlier on Monday. TSU is coached by former Heisman Trophy winner and NFL star Eddie George. Shortly after, Trayvis reported another offer — this time from Jackson State. JSU is coming off a thrilling win in the Celebration Bowl to claim the HBCU national title, adding even more intrigue to Trayvis’ recruitment.

Trayvis Hunter is a sophomore at Effingham County High School in Springfield, GA. He plays wide receiver and stands at 5’7, 140 pounds.

Trayvis’ Jackson State offer carries an extra layer of significance. His older brother Travis Hunter famously committed to JSU under then-head coach Deion Sanders, shocking the college football world by flipping from Florida State. Travis Hunter, the second-highest-rated prospect in the class of 2022, played one season at Jackson State, helping lead the Tigers to a SWAC championship and a 12-1 record before transferring to Colorado alongside Sanders.

Trayvis recently visited Florida State University, a program that once seemed destined to land his brother. Reflecting on his decision to choose an HBCU over a Power Five school, Travis Hunter explained his motivation during an appearance on *The Pivot* podcast.

“I know it’s a bit of sacrifice,” Hunter said. “But one day my brothers and sisters might not go D1. So I still got to shine a light on someone else. And that was my main focus and that’s what I did.”

While Trayvis Hunter does not yet have the national profile his older brother did, he’s still early in his high school career. With offers from Tennessee State and Jackson State already in hand, he has an opportunity to carve out his own path and shine a spotlight on HBCU football once again.

Tennessee State, of course, is a Division I member of the Football Championship Subdivision.

Trayvis Hunter is not nearly as highly rated as his brother was, but he’s also still got plenty of time to get better and gain more accolades. But he’s already got an HBCU offer in his back pocket.

After three empty trips to the Celebration Bowl as an assistant coach, Jackson State football head coach T.C. Taylor was determined to leave with an HBCU national title.

As the final second rolled down the clock on Jackson State’s dominant 28-7 win on Saturday, the Jackson State crowd chanted his name loud and clear.

“That was unbelievable,” a jubilant Taylor told the media after the game. “That’s a moment I never forget. But to get on that stage, I’ve been waiting a long time to get on that stage. To hoist that trophy up, you know? And it was unbelievable.”

It was a crowning moment for a man who patiently waited for it.

Taylor’s first trip came in 2016 when he was a member of new Kennesaw State head coach Jerry Mack’s staff at North Carolina Central. The team lost to Grambling State after a litany of eras in the final minutes.

The former Jackson State star who says he attended his first JSU game at the age of 10 was viewed as a potential head coach in waiting when he joined John Hendricks’ staff in 2019. But Deion Sanders’ unexpected arrival in 2020 meant Taylor had to bide his time as position coach as well as a short stint as offensive coordinator.

“I trust in God. And he had already told me the blueprint and everything, but he also told me ‘be ready when it get here,” Taylor said. “And I always prepared that way.”

The program won back-to-back SWAC titles in 2021 and 2022, but came up short in its quest for the HBCU title at the Celebration Bowl. Taylor was named Sanders’ successor by Director of Athletics Ashley Robinson and then went to work of re-building without many of the big names that propelled it into the national consciousness.

“When I had that opportunity — I pulled my sleeves up and went to work,” Taylor said. “I knew what I want my roster to like. I knew what I wanted this coaching staff to look like. And, I knew we were going to be successful. I wanted this moment. I knew this moment was going to happen, kind of wanting to last year.”

JSU went 7-4 in Taylor’s first season — a solid record — but solid only goes so far in Jackson. Taylor felt like the program was close, but he had to re-tool again via recruiting both new players and coaches.

“We had an opportunity to be really good. And those guys came in here and changed the culture — believed in me,” Taylor said. “ I had a lot of turnover on the coaching staff after the first year. They came in here and bought into the culture. I said, ‘we’re going to work our butts off because, we were going to get to this moment.”

Taylor expressed his desire to come away with a different result than his first three Celebration Bowl trips during Friday’s pre-game press conference.

“I’ve been here several times, but I’ve seen that confetti fall on other people each and every time,” Taylor told the media on Friday morning. “So I want to experience that, take some of that home, too, with me.”

Twenty four hours and one dominant performance later, T.C. Taylor got his wish — including his confetti.

“When I raised the trophy up, they were kind of late with the confetti,” Taylor said with a grin. “I’m like, I’ve been seeing everybody in previous years getting confetti while they raise that trophy. You finna give me the confetti today. But it felt great. It felt great.”

Travis Hunter, the star wide receiver and defensive back for Colorado has won the 2024 Heisman Trophy. Hunter began his career at an HBCU, playing one season for Deion Sanders at Jackson State before moving on to CU two seasons ago.

Famously playing on both offense and defense, Hunter has 92 catches, 1,152 receiving yards, 14 receiving TDs, 33 tackles, 10 pass breakups, 4 interceptions, and 1 forced fumble. Hunter has played an amazing 1,356 snaps over 12 games this season.

Hunter finished ahead of the other three finalists, Miami QB Cam Ward, Oregon QB Dillon Gabriel, and Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty.

“I started off at Jackson State,” Hunter said during a media session on Friday ahead of the Heisman ceremony. “I’ve got to thank them for allowing me to come in there and do what I do and accepting me when I left.”

Hunter was joined at the ceremony by both Deion and Shedeur Sanders, along with hip-hop artist Lil Wayne.

From HBCU to Heisman

Travis Hunter helped lead Jackson State to a SWAC Championship before losing to North Carolina Central in the 2022 HBCU National Championship game.

Hunter played in eight games during his freshman season at JSU. He caught 18 passes with four touchdowns that season as a receiver. He had two interceptions and 10 pass breakups during limited action that season as he nursed a lingering injury from high school.

Hunter is listed as the No. 1 overall draft prospect for this spring’s NFL Draft by ESPN’s Mel Kiper. He is projected to play on both sides of the ball in the NFL as he has done in college.

Hunter’s teammate, quarterback Shedeur Sanders, finished eighth in the Heisman Trophy voting. He completed 74.2 percent of his throws for 3,926 yards. Sanders led the Big 12 in touchdown passes with 35. He was picked off just eight times. Sanders is listed as the No. 3 overall prospect and the top quarterback for this year’s NFL Draft according to Kiper.

Jackson State University etched its name in HBCU football history with a commanding 21-point victory over South Carolina State in the 2024 Celebration Bowl. This triumph not only secured Jackson State’s first Celebration Bowl title but also tied the largest margin of victory in the game’s history. The 21-7 win was a moment of redemption for the Tigers, who lost to the Bulldogs in the 2021 matchup by the same margin.

The SWAC champions, led by quarterback Jacobian Morgan, showcased their offensive and defensive prowess. While the first quarter remained scoreless, Jackson State struck in the second quarter, scoring 14 points to take control of the game. Morgan was efficient under center, throwing for 219 yards and one touchdown, with wide receiver Joanes Fortilien hauling in a 4-yard scoring pass to open the Tigers’ account.

Dominance from Start to Finish

On the ground, running back Irv Mulligan delivered a standout performance with 71 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Jackson State outgained South Carolina State 367 yards to 135, including a staggering 148-16 advantage in rushing yards. The Tigers’ dominance in the trenches set the tone for the game.

A Relentless Defense

Jackson State’s defense was the backbone of their success, holding the MEAC champion Bulldogs to a mere 16 rushing yards on 18 attempts. Defensive standout A. Petty recorded a pivotal interception, while A. Taylor added a crucial sack as the Tigers repeatedly stifled South Carolina State’s offense. The Bulldogs, led by quarterback Eric Phoenix, struggled to find consistency, converting just one of 10 third-down attempts.

The defense also forced five three-and-outs and consistently pressured the Bulldogs’ offensive line, showcasing why Jackson State has become a force in HBCU football.

A Balanced Legacy

Jackson State’s Celebration Bowl victory is a defining moment for HBCU football, highlighting the program’s growth and determination. The Tigers’ ability to avenge their 2021 loss to South Carolina State demonstrates their evolution into a powerhouse program.

However, the game also underscores the competitive spirit of HBCU football, with South Carolina State continuing to represent the MEAC with pride. While the Tigers celebrate this historic win, both programs have elevated the profile of HBCU athletics, proving that the Celebration Bowl remains a premier showcase for Black college football on the national stage.

If the Heisman vote is to be taken as an official measuring stick, Sanders will come in as the fourth-best quarterback in the country. The last time there was any sort of HBCU storyline attached to the Heisman race was thirty years ago in 1994. Steve McNair, the former Alcorn State quarterback, was a finalist for the award. McNair finished third in the voting that season for the Heisman with 111 first place votes. Rashaan Salaam the Colorado running back won the award that season, Kijana Carter, a running back from Penn State finished second.

McNair made it to the round of 50 players being considered for the 2025 Pro Football Hall of Fame but didn’t make it as one of the 25 semifinalists.

Travis Hunter, the former HBCU star at Jackson State, wrapped up several national football awards on Thursday. Hunter, who followed coach Deion Sanders to Colorado two seasons ago was honored as the top overall player, the best defensive player and the best wide receiver.

The awards were given out on Thursday at the annual College Football Awards on ESPN. Earlier in the day before the awards show Hunter won the Associated Press College Football Player of the Year award, receiving 26 of 43 votes from a panel of AP Top 25 voters.

Once the cameras started rolling Thursday night Hunter kept picking up hardware. He won the Walter Camp Award as Player of the Year and later picked up the Chuck Bednarik Award as the top defensive player and the Biletnikoff Award for the best wide receiver.

Hunter became the first player in history to win both the Bednarik and Biletnikoff Awards. He is also the first Bednarik and Biletnikoff Award winner in Colorado history.

Travis Hunter, the current Colorado star, began his career at Jackson State, a Mississippi HBCU.
Travis Hunter played one year at Jackson State before spending the last two seasons at Colorado.

“Couldn’t do what I do without my team,” Hunter said in an email to ESPN. “So I view being up for these awards as team awards.”

Hunter shook up the college recruiting world three years ago when he committed to an HBCU as the No. 1 overall player in the country. He flipped his commitment from Florida State to Jackson State to join Sanders, ultimately playing one season in the SWAC.

Hunter is one of four finalists for the Heisman award which will be given out on Saturday night. If he wins he would be the first recipient to ever play a portion of his career at an HBCU.

Nearly three years after shocking the world and choosing an HBCU —Jackson State — over Florida State, Colorado star Travis Hunter is still making headlines as a Heisman Trophy finalist.

The former Jackson State star recently sat down with the hosts of The Pivot and talked about many things, including his decision to come to the HBCU back in 2021.

Hunter admitted he didn’t initially want to come to Jackson State, but Deion Sanders convinced him it would impact the sports world.

“When I first talked him it was like — “I don’t care who he is” — I don’t want to to go there,” Hunter told the panel. “But as I talked to him more, I was like, oh, this might be, the place I want to go.”

Ultimately Hunter chose to come to JSU, shocking the college football world and creating conversation around top athletes choosing HBCUs first.

“Coach Prime, he warned me. You know, he let me know,” Hunter said of Sanders. “When we had that conversation of whether I was going to go or stay with Florida State. He let me know. He warned me. Like, it’s going to be a big impact. But you’re a humble, kid, and we know you can take on whatever comes your way. So it’s your choice.”

Hunter also revealed he made the decision with his girfirend-turned fiancé Leanna Lenee.

“My girl she was still there. She still is here. So people don’t know — I had that conversation with her first before I went to my family — had that conversation. And once I had a conversation with them, I’m like — I know it’s a bit of sacrifice. But one day my brothers and sisters might not go D1. So I still got to shine a light on someone else. And that was my main focus and that’s what I did.”

NCAA Football, Deion Sanders, HBCU Travis Hunter, Colorado Football, Heisman Trophy

Hunter only played roughly a half season at JSU, helping the team to a 12-1 record and a SWAC Championship. He played both ways in that limited time and had moments of greatness — particularly at the Celebration Bowl, where he showed the type of talent we’ve seen at Colorado over the last two seasons. Hunter and Shedeur Sanders connected for a game-tying touchdown pass at the end of regulation to send it to overtime.

North Carolina Central would ultimately win the game in overtime 41-34 as Hunter joined Deion Sanders and a host of others — including Shiloh and Shedeur Sanders — over to Colorado. The rest is history, with some parts to still be written, including a possible Heisman Trophy.

The Heisman Trophy winner will be announced on Dec. 14.

Here are five things you should know.

The post HBCU Sports Betting Guide: Celebration Bowl 2024 appeared first on HBCU Gameday.

]]>
If you’re looking to bet on the highly anticipated Celebration Bowl featuring HBCU powerhouses Jackson State and South Carolina State, here are some tips to make informed decisions for this championship showdown that will determine the top team in HBCU football.

1. Evaluate Jackson State’s HBCU-Leading Defense

  • Why It Matters: Jackson State boasts one of the strongest defenses in HBCU football, allowing just 17.9 points per game and recording 34 sacks this season. It’s aggressive pass rush and secondary, which has 13 interceptions, could make it tough for South Carolina State’s passing attack.
  • Betting Tip: Consider betting on Jackson State against the spread (ATS), especially if they are modest favorites. A wager on the under may also hold value, given Jackson State’s ability to keep opponents’ scoring low.

2. Assess South Carolina State’s Explosive HBCU Offense

  • Why It Matters: South Carolina State averages an impressive 35.4 points per game, powered by quarterback Eric Phoenix and wide receiver Caden High. It’s red-zone efficiency and big-play ability make them one of the most potent offenses in HBCU and FCS football.
  • Betting Tip: If the over/under total is reasonable, betting the over might be a smart move, especially if you expect South Carolina State to challenge Jackson State’s defense with their high-scoring offense.

3. Turnovers Could Be Key in This HBCU Matchup

  • Why It Matters: Turnovers often determine the outcome in tightly contested HBCU games. Jackson State has an edge in turnover differential, with a disciplined offense and a defense that thrives on forcing mistakes. South Carolina State, while strong, has shown vulnerability in giveaways at times.
  • Betting Tip: Consider live bets on turnovers or even a defensive touchdown, as both teams are capable of game-changing plays in this HBCU classic.

4. Monitor the Running Game Battle

  • Why It Matters: The ground game will be critical in this HBCU showdown. Jackson State’s Irv Mulligan (1,174 yards) has been unstoppable at times, while South Carolina State relies on KZ Adams (497 yards) to balance their offense. Controlling the clock through rushing could decide the game.
  • Betting Tip: Prop bets on Mulligan’s rushing yards or touchdowns might offer great value, especially if Jackson State leans on its rushing attack.

5. Pay Attention to Special Teams

  • Why It Matters: Special teams often play a pivotal role in HBCU games, and Jackson State’s kicker Matt Noll provides consistency with 22 successful field goals. South Carolina State’s special teams also contribute to their overall game plan, but Jackson State’s edge could prove decisive.
  • Betting Tip: Look for props on total field goals made, as both teams’ defenses might force several red-zone stops, leading to kicking opportunities.

Final Thoughts

With HBCU pride and a national championship on the line, this game promises to be a thrilling battle. Whether betting on the spread, total, or prop bets, understanding each team’s strengths and weaknesses can help you make more informed choices. Always bet responsibly as you enjoy this showcase of HBCU excellence.

Jackson State University (11-2, 8-0 SWAC) capped off an undefeated SWAC campaign with a commanding 41-13 victory over Southern University (8-5, 7-1 SWAC) in the 2024 SWAC Championship Game at Mississippi Memorial Stadium. The Tigers are one game away from an HBCU National Championship, facing South Carolina State next weekend in the Celebration Bowl in Atlanta.

Game Highlights

The game opened with both teams trading early blows, with Southern taking a 10-3 lead midway through the second quarter thanks to a 38-yard field goal by Joshua Griffin and a 1-yard touchdown run by quarterback Czavian Teasett. Jackson State responded with a pivotal two-minute drill drive, capped by Emari Matthews’ 2-yard rushing touchdown to tie the game 10-10 before halftime.

Jackson State dominated the second half, fueled by the explosive play of their running backs and quarterback Zy McDonald. Irv Mulligan’s 2-yard touchdown run and a 45-yard field goal by Gerardo Baeza early in the third quarter shifted the momentum entirely. McDonald’s dual-threat abilities were on display as he added a 23-yard rushing touchdown and connected with Jaden Fortilien for a 13-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter to seal the game.

Key Performances

  • Jackson State Offense:
    • Rushing Dominance: The Tigers amassed 275 yards on the ground, led by Irv Mulligan (116 yards, 1 TD) and Zy McDonald (95 yards, 1 TD).
    • Zy McDonald: Contributed both through the air (75 yards, 1 TD) and on the ground.
    • Balanced Attack: Five different players found the end zone.
  • Southern University Offense:
    • Czavian Teasett: Accounted for Southern’s lone touchdown with a 1-yard run but struggled under constant pressure, completing 11 of 21 passes for 127 yards with 1 interception.
    • Joshua Griffin: Converted both field goal attempts to keep Southern competitive early.
  • Defensive Standouts:
    • Jackson State: The defensive line, led by Joshua Nobles and Ashton Taylor, recorded three sacks and forced four fumbles, recovering two.
    • Southern: Vincent Page Jr. led the Jaguars with nine tackles.

Statistical Breakdown

  • Total Yards: Jackson State 385, Southern 313
  • Turnovers: Southern 4, Jackson State 2
  • Time of Possession: Even at 30:00 per team, but Jackson State capitalized on quick scoring drives.

Turning Point

Jackson State’s defense forced a fumble on Southern’s opening drive of the second half, leading to a quick touchdown. From that moment, the Tigers controlled both sides of the ball, overwhelming the Jaguars.

HBCU National Championship is next

Jackson State claimed their SWAC title in emphatic fashion, demonstrating why they were the top team in the conference all season. Head coach T.C. Taylor’s squad now shifts its attention to the HBCU National Championship game against South Carolina State in the Celebration Bowl.

JACKSON, Miss. | The records are thrown out the window when teams reach the first weekend in December with the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) championship and a bid to the 2024 Celebration Bowl on the line. That is what is at stake on Saturday afternoon when SWAC East Division champion Jackson State hosts West Division champion Southern at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium. The HBCU football championship matchup is set to kick off at 1 p.m. on ESPN2.

No. 15/18 Jackson State (10-2, 8-0 SWAC), winners of eight consecutive games, faces Southern (8-4, 7-1 SWAC) for the second time this season, having played on Sept. 14 in Jackson in non-conference action. The Tigers won that game 33-15 by jumping out to a 20-point first-half lead behind a balanced offense although Southern was able to pass for 387 yards in the loss.

The two legendary HBCU football programs met two years ago in the championship game at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium with the Tigers winning their second consecutive conference championship with the victory. The two teams have met three times in the championship game with Southern leading 2-1 in those meetings.

The post Deion Sanders and the evolving HBCU football coaching carousel appeared first on HBCU Gameday.

]]>
It has been two years since Deion Sanders left Jackson State football and the HBCU world for Colorado with the championship game partitions still on the field.

A lot has changed in HBCU football since then, particularly in terms of head football coaches. Out of the 21 HBCU football programs at the Division I level, 16 of them have changed head coaches since the start of the 2022 season. That includes the entire SWAC, minus Alabama State, who hired Eddie Robinson Jr. prior to the 2022 season.

The only HBCU football coaches on this level that were hired before Deion Sanders was hired by Ashley Robinson at Jackson State in Sept. 2020 are North Carolina Central’s Trei Oliver and Howard University’s Larry Scott. And Scott didn’t get to coach until spring of 2021 like Sanders.

Six Division I HBCU programs have dismissed their head coaches in 2024. Prairie View A&M parted ways with Bubba McDowell after a brief tenure marked by mediocrity and the arrival of a new athletic director. Alabama A&M’s Connell Maynor, a veteran with a respectable but unspectacular record, also saw his tenure end a few years the arrival of a new AD. At Delaware State and Mississippi Valley State, Lee Hull and Kendrick Wade were ousted following poor records and administrative changes. Even Norfolk State’s Dawson Odums, who worked under the same athletic director, could not escape the chopping block after sustained losing seasons. Vincent Brown Sr. seemed to have his AD’s public approval, but that wasn’t enough to keep his job after back-to-back one-win seasons at North Carolina A&T.

Alabama A&M, HBCU
Bryan Hicks was the AD at Alabama A&M when Connell Maynor was hired in 2018.

This rapid churn of coaches reflects broader trends in college sports but raises questions about its implications for HBCU programs. The influx of new athletic directors has been a common thread. Administrative changes often signal shifts in strategic priorities, and coaches without immediate success may find themselves on the outs as new leaders seek to stamp their authority on programs.

This impact even rolls down the Division II level, where Shaw University and Elizabeth City State are looking for new coaches a few years after hiring athletic directors.

Another factor is the increased visibility and pressure on HBCU athletics, especially after Deion Sanders’ transformative tenure at Jackson State. When Sanders took over in 2020, he brought national attention, significant resources, and a spotlight to the potential of HBCU football programs. His success at Jackson State—culminating in SWAC championships and multiple NFL Draft picks—seemingly raised the bar for what HBCU football could achieve. For better or worse, it also set a new expectation for immediate results, as athletic departments and fanbases began to demand Sanders-like impacts from their coaching hires. And it didn’t get any easier this season when Chennis Berry took over at South Carolina State for the retired Buddy Pough and won the MEAC in his first season.

But is this acceleration of turnover uniquely tied to Sanders, or is it a natural evolution of the coaching profession? Coaching turnover is a common phenomenon across all levels of college football, as win-loss records increasingly dictate job security. HBCUs, long hampered by budgetary constraints and administrative instability, are now playing a higher-stakes game, where the cost of losing seasons can no longer be ignored. The changing realities of the transfer portal and NIL can’t be ignored either.

This shift has benefits and drawbacks. On one hand, high turnover creates opportunities for programs to find the right leaders who can deliver results and meet heightened expectations. On the other, it risks undermining the development of programs and players, as frequent coaching changes disrupt continuity and institutional culture.

The days of Eddie Robinson patrolling the sidelines for 50 years are unlikely to return. But 2024’s dizzying coaching carousel reflects an evolving reality: HBCU football, once insulated from the intense pressures of Division I athletics, is now fully entrenched in the high-pressure dynamics of the modern coaching market. Whether this shift will lead to long-term success or short-term instability remains to be seen.

Ironically, it may have been said best by Deion Sanders as he broke the news of his departure to his Jackson State squad on that early December night.

“In coaching, you get elevated or you get terminated,” Sanders said. “Ain’t no other way. You either elevated or terminated. And it ain’t no graveyard for coaches where they die at the place. And either they gonna run you off, or you gonna walk off on your own recognizance.”

Former Jackson State and Detroit Lions star defensive end James Houston has found a new home in the NFL. The Lions cut the three-year veteran on Tuesday but he did not make it through waivers. According to the NFL transaction wire, Houston was claimed by the Cleveland Browns on Wednesday and is now set to join their 53-man roster.

The Lions waived Houston midway through his third season with the team. Detroit selected Houston out of Jackson State in the sixth round of the 2022 NFL Draft. Houston started the season on the practice squad before becoming a starter midway through the year and having an impactful season. In seven game appearances, Houston picked up eight sacks.

Houston dealt with a fractured ankle in his second season and was never able to return to the same form for the Lions.

“It just didn’t. We had James up for a number of games, came back off of injury, got back, and it just never quite worked out,” Detroit head coach Dan Campbell said.

Houston had 13 pressures and just one sack in 2024 with the Lions.

Earlier this season Detroit acquired Za’Darius Smith, a defensive end, from Cleveland, a move that made Houston expendable.

In his lone season at Jackson State in 2021, James Houston racked up 52 solo tackles, 24.5 tackles-for-loss , 16.5 sacks, seven forced fumbles, two fumble recovers, and two defensive touchdowns. He ranked first in the SWAC in forced fumbles and second in tackles-for-loss. The Florida native began his collegiate career at the University of Florida before transferring to Jackson State for his final year of eligibility.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.– On Friday, November 8th the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) was made aware of allegations regarding the potential unauthorized usage of practice film. After conducting a comprehensive review of the information received, which included an IT analysis provided by DVSportINC, both oral and written statements, written statements from both institutions, individual interviews, along with the consultation of legal counsel, the Conference Office does not have enough substantial evidence to prove any allegations of unethical conduct by Jackson State University.

The Southwestern Athletic Conference has officially concluded its investigation but reserves the right to review any additional information received on this matter.

The Southwestern Athletic Conference upholds an extremely high standard of integrity with all aspects related to athletic competition and we will continue to take proactive steps to ensure fair competition within all sponsored sports.

How It Unfolded

According to sources, the allegations emerged when a UAPB player informed the coaching staff on Oct. 31 that a Jackson State player mentioned Tigers’ defensive personnel were watching UAPB practice footage in their team facility. Alarmed by the claim, UAPB head coach Alonzo Hampton reviewed the team’s video-sharing software and discovered that practice film had been accessed by the account of a former walk-on who was cut from the team in the spring.

Responses from Both Sides

Coach Hampton, along with UAPB athletic director Chris Robinson, contacted the former player, who denied providing Jackson State with access to the film. Speaking to ESPN, the player insisted that he did not share his credentials with anyone at Jackson State but admitted to previously sharing login information with former UAPB teammates. He also revealed that he was unaware his access to the system was still active.

Jackson State’s athletic department did not respond to ESPN’s requests for comment but did later respond to Blake Levine of WJTV.

“We are aware of the allegations brought to the attention of the conference,” officials told Levine. “After working with the conference office and having full transparency into our program, no violations were found and the matter was closed.”

Meanwhile, a UAPB spokesperson confirmed awareness of the investigation but declined further comment at the time.

The 2024 Eddie Robinson Award finalists have been announced by Stats Perform, and three HBCU coaches are among the 15 honored for their exceptional leadership in Division I FCS football. Named after legendary Grambling State coach Eddie Robinson, this award recognizes the national coach of the year and has celebrated excellence since 1987.

This year’s HBCU finalists include Chennis Berry of South Carolina State, Eddie George of Tennessee State, and T.C. Taylor of Jackson State. Each has made a profound impact on their programs, solidifying HBCU football’s presence on the national stage.

In his first season at South Carolina State, Berry led the Bulldogs to a 9-2 record, a perfect 5-0 mark in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, and a spot in the Celebration Bowl. His transformative leadership has reestablished SC State as a powerhouse.

Eddie George led Tennessee State to a 9-3 record and a share of the Big South-OVC title.

Eddie George, the fourth-year head coach at Tennessee State, guided the Tigers to a 9-3 record and a share of the Big South-OVC title—marking the program’s first conference championship since 1999. Tennessee State also secured its first playoff berth in over a decade, showcasing George’s ability to revitalize the historic HBCU program.

T.C. Taylor of Jackson State continued the Tigers’ dominance, achieving a 10-2 record and sweeping the SWAC East Division with an 8-0 conference mark. Jackson State will host the SWAC Championship Game as they aim for another Celebration Bowl appearance.

The Eddie Robinson Award winner will be announced on December 5, with the honor presented on January 4 at the Stats Perform FCS National Awards Banquet in Frisco, Texas.

With three HBCU coaches among the finalists, this year’s list underscores the vital role of HBCU football in shaping the future of the sport and upholding the legacy of Eddie Robinson, one of the most influential figures in college football history. Previous HBCU winners include Henry Frazier (Prairie View A&M), and Deion Sanders (Jackson State).

The Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) has launched an investigation into allegations that Jackson State players and coaches had access to Arkansas-Pine Bluff’s practice film in the lead-up to their Nov. 2 matchup, according to an article by ESPN. The investigation, confirmed by SWAC spokesperson Andrew Roberts, comes after claims surfaced two days before the game, which Jackson State won decisively, 41-3.

Further investigation revealed that the IP address linked to the account was registered in Clinton, Mississippi, just outside Jackson. This led to suspicions that the footage might have been shared with JSU.

Jackson State’s athletic department did not respond to ESPN’s requests for comment, but did later respond to Blake Levine of WJTV.

Meanwhile, a UAPB spokesperson confirmed awareness of the investigation but declined further comment.

The Bigger Picture

Jackson State entered the game as heavy favorites, with UAPB struggling offensively throughout the season. The Tigers limited the Golden Lions to their worst performance since being shut out by Arkansas in the season opener. Despite the lopsided outcome, the potential implications of this investigation could cast a shadow over Jackson State’s season.

Postgame Fallout

The allegations come on the heels of Jackson State’s gritty 16-10 victory over Alabama State on Nov. 11, which secured their spot in the SWAC title game. That matchup was marred by a postgame altercation resulting in $25,000 fines for both schools and 16 player suspensions—seven of which were handed to Jackson State players.

As the investigation continues, questions remain about how the film was accessed, why the former player’s account wasn’t deactivated, and whether JSU knowingly benefited from the footage. The SWAC has yet to announce a timeline for resolving the matter.
